Idaho: the escape destination of choice for discerning bees

Police say a New York City man driving a stolen car took the wrong road and ended up lost and without gas in Pennsylvania. Cristian Osorio left Queens early Friday and was headed to Syracuse, N.Y. State police said he got lost and ended up on the side of Route 33 in Plainfield, Pa., on Saturday. That’s when a state trooper arrived to help and discovered the car was stolen. Osorio was being held on $15,000 bail. (AP)

A man in Connecticut who mistakenly bought the wrong lottery ticket is $30,000 wealthier. Bob Sabo, of Easton, says he didn’t want to wait in line to buy a lottery ticket at the Super Stop & Shop in Fairfield, so he decided to buy a ticket from a lottery vending machine, something he had previously never done. Sabo says he meant to buy two $20 tickets, but says he didn’t have his glasses on and instead bought a $30 ticket. (AP)

Bees were swarming near the Washington-Idaho border after a tractor-trailer full of the buzzing insects tipped over, spilling its load on Sunday. One eastbound lane of Interstate 90 was closed by the accident near Coeur d’Alene, near where the Ironman triathlon’s marathon was being run. A similar truck wreck just two days earlier released more than 20 million bees on State Highway 33 in the eastern Idaho desert. (AP)

Local startup helps to keep an eye out THE DISTRICT “I’d like to know if the person I’m dating has disturbing skeletons in their closet.” “I’d like to know if my partner is cheating on me.” “I’d like to know if someone in my life is hiding something.” Welcome to the home page of Trustify, the Georgetown-based website that seeks to disrupt the private investigative profession the way Zillow upended real estate and Uber crashed into cabs. “It’s a sector that’s ripe for disruption,” said Brian Willingham, 39, a longtime private investigator and adviser to Trustify. “There’s something like 50,000-plus private investigators, and the vast majority are probably sole operators. It sets eyes aglow for an entrepreneur who wants to take a chunk of a large, fragmented business that has done things a certain way for a long time.”

BILL O’LEARY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Georgetown website connects people with private investigators

Danny Boice, owner of Trustify, modeled the company as Uber for hiring private investigators.

Local technologist Danny Boice, a former DeMatha Catholic High School baseball star, launched the company out of frustration with private investigators he hired during his divorce three years ago. “I paid a guy a $1,500 retainer, and he blew through that in a week,” Boice said. “I felt skeezy.” So Boice, who has made a few million dollars in startups,

decided to launch a technology company with a website that connects private investigators to the masses. The company has 10 employees, is three months old and has grossed about $100,000 so far from linking 1,000 jobs to what Boice says is a stable of 2,000 licensed private investigators. Trustify enables people to hire licensed private investigators for chunks of time as short as one hour at a rate of $67 an hour. Boice said the company is “essentially a lead generator, a predictable revenue stream that allows [investigators] to pay their electric bills.” Trustify pays the investigator $30 an hour and keeps the rest. Boice has invested $200,000 in Trustify and plans to solicit several million dollars from private investors next month. He eventually wants to sell stock to the public. “The bottom line is that there is a consumer demand for quick cases with lower dollar amounts,” Boice said. “The more entrenched private investigators just aren’t aligned with consumer demand.” THOMAS HEATH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRINITY WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

THE DISTRICT A federal appeals court ruled Monday that the District can continue enforcing its strict new gun-permitting rules pending a final ruling on whether the restrictions are constitutional — indicating that the judges see some merit in the city’s position that the law should stand. In overturning an injunction last month by U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Scullin Jr., the threejudge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit issued no opinion explaining its reasoning. But the appeals court set aside Scullin’s finding that a challenge by gun rights activists to a key provision of the law was likely to prevail. That provision requires a person to state a “good reason” for carrying a weapon in order to obtain a permit from police. In a statement, D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine said his office was “extremely pleased” with the decision. “Our procedure for issuing gun-carry permits is very similar to laws in New Jersey, New York and Maryland that federal

appeals courts have upheld,” he said. D.C. officials have called guncarry rules a fundamental safety concern, given the District’s unique status as host to federal officials and the diplomatic corps. Alan Gura, attorney for Brian Wrenn, two other individual plaintiffs and the Second Amendment Foundation, said only that he was pleased the court also chose to expedite arguments so each side can present its case. Attorneys for Wrenn and the other plaintiffs have argued successfully before Scullin that the D.C. gun regulation continues to violate plaintiffs’ Second Amendment right to bear arms because, the judge wrote, the District failed to show that people with “good reason” to carry a firearm are any less likely to pose a public safety danger than others. On Monday, U.S. Circuit panel disagreed without elaborating, calling for oral arguments soon after a Sept. 24 deadline for written filings by attorneys. The law allows city residents who own properly registered handguns, as well as nonresidents with a state carry license, to apply for a permit to bear a concealed weapon in the District. SPENCER S. Metro Movie Night Saturday, July 11 Fort Totten Station parking lot Bee Movie

More than a quarter million workers from throughout the region participate in Metro’s SmartBenefits® program. Now, the District of Columbia is leading the region in encouraging new transit usage with a new Commuter Benefits Ordinance. The ordinance requires every business with 20 or more employees to offer access to commuter transit benefits by January 2016. Enrolling employees in SmartBenefits® is one way that businesses can meet the new requirements, and Metro is prepared to get them started. SmartBenefits® participants receive a monthly allotment for use on Metrobus, Metrorail, regional commuter systems and vanpools with the money placed directly on their SmarTrip® cards. The funds may come as a direct employer benefit, be taken out of their paycheck as a pretax deduction, or a combination of both. The program encourages workers to use public transit for commuting, and it lowers their out-of-pocket travel expense. It’s a win for workers, employers and the region as a whole, as traffic congestion and pollution go down when public transit use goes up. Companies recognize that Metro is valuable for their business, transporting customers and employees right to their doorsteps. Just consider that more than three-quarters of new office construction in the region is occurring within one quarter mile of a Metrorail station. And as demand for transit access increases from a younger, transit-dependent workforce, the SmartBenefits® program plays a critical role in recruiting and retaining top-quality employees. Metro staff is constantly working to get new companies on board the SmartBenefits® program. In the first half of this year, nearly 200 new SmartBenefits® accounts have been enrolled. You and your co-workers could be next. For more information on the SmartBenefits® program, call 202-962-1326, option 3, or visit wmata.com/smartbenefits.

Join Metro on Saturday, July 11th, for the first-ever Metro Movie Night. Bring your family, friends and neighbors to the Fort Totten Metrorail Station parking lot for a free screening of the animated film, Bee Movie. Gates open at 5 pm and you can enjoy games and music until the movie starts at dusk (approximately 8:30 pm). Metro staff will be on hand to answer questions and discuss available parking at Fort Totten and other Metrorail stations. Local community organizations will share information and offer giveaways. Parking will be limited, so consider taking Metrorail (Green, Yellow or Red Line) or walking. Lawn chairs, food and beverages are welcome, but alcohol and glass containers are not permitted. Get more information at wmata.com/ movienight.

Paper Farecards Are On The Way Out The countdown is on to the end of paper farecards in the Metro system. Riders have until early 2016 to trade in their paper farecards and start using a SmarTrip® card. Switch to SmarTrip® now and start saving money right away. SmarTrip® card users save $1 per trip by avoiding the paper farecard surcharge. Plus, SmarTrip® card users enjoy free transfers to Metrobus and discounted transfers from Metrobus to Metrorail.

Longtime teacher pleads guilty in child porn case

Perjury charge in missing Md. sisters case filed in Va.

The controversial execution drug approved by the U.S. Supreme Court is used in Virginia, but no executions are scheduled and the state’s supply expires at the end of September. Midazolam is one of three drugs Virginia can use in step one of its three-drug execution protocol. Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lisa Kinney says the state doesn’t have either of the other two step-one drugs and is unable to obtain them. Also, it’s uncertain whether additional midazolam will be available after the current batch expires. The department has the drugs used in steps two and three. They don’t expire until next year. (AP)

A longtime Montgomery County, Md., special education teacher pleaded guilty Monday to possessing child pornography. None of the images on Peter Flynn’s computers were of students at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School where he taught, a U.S. Attorney’s Office spokeswoman said. School spokesman Dana Tofig said when Flynn, 61, was indicted in January that he had taught special needs students at the school since 1979. Prosecutors said in a statement Monday that Flynn had more than 28,000 pornographic images of children and 795 videos on two computers at his home.

A perjury charge stemming from an investigation into the 1975 disappearance of two Maryland sisters is going to a Bedford County, Va., grand jury. The News & Advance reports that 65-year-old Patricia Jean Welch of Hyattsville, Md., waived her right to a preliminary hearing Monday. A prosecutor says Welch was charged after appearing before a special grand jury investigating the case of 10-year-old Katherine Lyon and 12-year-old Shelia Lyon. The girls disappeared after walking to a shopping mall in Wheaton, Md. Authorities named Patricia Welch’s husband, Richard Allen Welch, as a “person of interest” in the case. (AP)

nation+world ABOUT TIME

On Monday, two dissenting justices said it is “highly likely” the death penalty is unconstitutional.

Justices uphold use of execution drug

JACQUELYN MARTIN (AP)

Brace for 61 seconds in only a minute

In 5-4 decision, Supreme Court rules to allow midazolam as lethal injection WASHINGTON Trading sharp words, a divided Supreme Court upheld the use of a controversial drug in lethalinjection executions Monday. On their last day together until the fall, the justices voted 5-4 in a case from Oklahoma that the sedative midazolam can be used in executions without violating the Eighth Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment. In the dispute over the lethalinjection drug, midazolam was used in Arizona, Ohio and Oklahoma executions in 2014. The executions took longer than usual and raised concerns that the drug did not perform its intended task of putting inmates into a coma-like sleep. In a separate dissent, Justice Stephen Breyer said the time has come for the court to debate whether the death penalty itself is constitutional. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined Breyer’s opinion. “I believe it highly likely that the death penalty violates the Eighth Amendment,” Breyer said, drawing on cases he has reviewed in more than 20 years. The court released several other decisions Monday:

Court blocks restrictive Texas abortion-clinic rules The Supreme Court refused on Monday to allow Texas to enforce restrictions that would force 10 abortion clinics to close. The justices voted 5-4 to grant an emergency appeal from the clinics after a federal appeals court upheld new regulations and refused to keep them on hold while the clinics appealed to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court order will remain in effect at least until the court decides whether to hear the clinics’ appeal of the lower court ruling, not before the fall. The court’s decision to block the regulations is a strong indication that the justices will hear the full appeal, which could be the biggest abortion case at the Supreme Court in nearly 25 years.

Justices rule against EPA power plant mercury limits The Supreme Court ruled Monday against the Obama administration’s attempt to limit power plant emissions of mercury and other hazardous air pollutants, but it may only be a temporary setback for regulators.

Ohio Gov. Kasich to launch Republican presidential bid July 21

The justices split 5-4 along ideological lines to rule that the Environmental Protection Agency did not properly take costs into account when it first decided to regulate the toxic emissions from coal- and oil-fired plants. The EPA did factor in costs at a later stage, when it wrote standards that are expected to reduce the toxic emissions by 90 percent. But the court said that was too late. The rules, which took effect in April, will remain in place while the case goes back to a lower court for the EPA to decide how to account for costs, environmental advocates say.

Court upholds redistricting in Montana, 12 other states The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 on Monday that independent commissions may draw electoral district lines, saying that the people have a right to try to make the congressional redistricting process less partisan. The case arose after Arizona voters opposed to congressional gerrymandering had taken the power away from state legislators. MARK SHERMAN (AP)

Today, at a moment before 8 p.m., the entire planet will get a bonus second, thanks to Earth’s rotation gradually slowing down. Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC (4 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time) is based on an atomic clock, which calculates the length of a second based on (very predictable) changes in cesium atoms. But our standard of time eventually stops keeping in sync with the actual behavior of our slowing planet. As a result, the group that monitors UTC1, the time based on the Earth’s rotation, has thrown a leap second into the mix as needed to keep UTC within .9 seconds of real-world accuracy. So instead of switching right to July 1 at 23:59:59 UTC (which is just before 8 p.m., Eastern time) we’ll move on to 23:59:60 first. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Colorado Supreme Court strikes down school voucher program for channeling public funds to religious schools

TUESDAY | 06.30.2015 | EXPRESS | 11

nation+world AUSTIN, TEXAS Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Sunday advised county clerks, magistrates and others who have religious objections to same-sex marriage that they may opt out of providing services to same-sex couples seeking marriage licenses. Calling the Supreme Court’s ruling allowing same-sex unions nationally a “lawless decision,” Paxton, a Republican, said that his guidance was necessary to protect the religious liberties of hundreds of local officials whose job it is it issue marriage licenses.

“We find that although it fabricated a new constitutional right in 2015, the Supreme Court did not diminish, overrule, or call into question the First Amendment rights to free exercise of religion that formed the first freedom in the Bill of Rights,” he said in a statement. Paxton acknowledges the legal vulnerability for local officials who decline to help gay couples. He suggests that clerks and others who do not want to issue same-sex marriage licenses because of religious beliefs delegate that responsibility to others.

HEALTH California lawmakers on Monday sent the governor a contentious bill that would impose one of the strictest school vaccination laws in the country after a series of emotionally charged debates. The Senate reaffirmed the bill striking California’s personal belief exemption for immunizations on a 24-14 vote. Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown has not said whether he would sign it. Democratic Sens. Richard Pan and Ben Allen introduced the measure after an outbreak of measles at Disneyland in December infected more than 100 people in the U.S. and Mexico. “The science remains unequivocal that vaccines are safe, that vaccines save lives,” Pan said. If the bill becomes law, children whose parents refuse vaccination can try to obtain a medical exemption or be homeschooled.

People protest the California bill that would limit exemptions to school vaccination laws.

Otherwise, children who currently claim a personal belief exemption will need to get fully vaccinated by kindergarten and seventh grade. Thousands of parents have flooded the Capitol in recent weeks to oppose the bill at legislative hearings. They and some lawmakers say that the state is trampling on parental rights. Europe on the brink? Leaders may not say so, but the EU’s future is on the line in Greece

Puerto Rico says it can’t pay off $70B debt

GIANNIS PAPANIKOS (AP)

LONDON He said he felt sorrow and betrayal. He begged, and he blamed. With Greece’s future in Europe on the line, European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker pulled off an emotional tour de force Monday as he sought to talk the country down from its perch at the edge of the abyss. “I very much like the Greeks,” he told reporters gravely during a Brussels news conference, “and I’d say to them, ‘You should not commit suicide because you are afraid of death.’ ” The choice facing Greece may indeed be that dire. But as Juncker’s dramatic performance showed, there is also an enormous amount at stake for Europe. Greeks will vote Sunday in a snap referendum that its leftist leader, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, has said is meant to give his public the final say on whether he should accept the tough terms of a cash-for-austerity deal from creditors at the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Tsipras wants Greeks to say no, apparently arguing that creditors are bluffing and will not take the catastrophic step of ejecting Greece from the club of 19 nations that use the euro currency. But across the continent, leaders from Germany to Slovakia, Italy to Portugal, all warned the Greeks that their vote Sunday effectively represents a choice between remaining in the euro zone and not. To let a country reject the rules of the club and stay in it, they seemed to argue, would be more dangerous to the currency union’s future than booting out

one recalcitrant member. “If these principles are no longer adhered to, I am deeply convinced that the euro will fail, and we don’t want that,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday, referring to the need for fiscally sound management. Merkel, whose nation has lent more to Greece than any other in the European Union, is often seen as the architect of Greek austerity. But in fact, some of the countries that are now coming down hardest on Greece are the smaller, poorer euro-zone nations that have already accepted the bitter pills of austerity and say the Greeks should, too — though Europe would be fine either way. Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva, for instance, said Monday it was an “illusion” that the common currency would be weakened if Greece left. “The euro zone has 19 countries. I hope that Greece will not exit, but, if it does, that still leaves 18,” Silva told reporters in Lisbon, according to the Spanish newswire EFE. European officials have tried

to signal that the continent is strong enough to weather the consequences of “Grexit,” a Greek departure from the euro zone. But the truth is that no one knows for sure what the broader consequences could be if a union forged over decades on the principle of ever-closer ties suddenly ejects one of its own, leaving it to a potentially catastrophic fate. Simon Tilford, deputy director of the Center for European Reform said that European officials are deluding themselves if

they think that other vulnerable economies along Europe’s southern periphery will be protected from a fate similar to Greece’s. “Once you have the next downturn, which may not be very far away, the consequences of Grexit will become apparent,” he said. There is also the danger that after decades of convergence, a Greek exit could propel Europe into a period of pulling apart — a development that would have significant economic and geopolitical consequences. Britain, though not in the euro zone, is set to hold a referendum by the end of 2017 on whether to remain part of the European Union. “So far, the E.U. has been in a continuous process of integration,” said Dušan Reljic, head of the Brussels office of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. “What we are experiencing now is a huge step toward disintegration. If there was a Grexit, and maybe a Brexit were to follow, the E.U. would have a big problem.” GRIFF WITTE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla has decided that the island cannot pay back over $70 billion in debt, setting up an unprecedented financial crisis that could rock the municipal bond market and lead to higher borrowing costs for governments across the United States. Here’s what you need to know. (THE WASHINGTON POST) Laws prevent the island from filing for bankruptcy Unlike cities like Detroit, Puerto Rico is not permitted to file for bankruptcy. A report issued Monday stated that a failure to iron out an agreement with creditors could ignite a long and uncharted process to sort out the country’s financial obligations.

A default could affect U.S. mutual funds The implications are serious for Americans outside Puerto Rico largely because many hold island bonds in mutual funds. At one point in 2013, an estimated three out of four municipal bond mutual funds held Puerto Rican bonds.

THREE POINTERS

Look who’s talking now

Solo keeping a low profile at World Cup WOMEN’S WORLD CUP Hope Solo has disappeared from the World Cup. Make no mistake: She has started every match for the U.S. women’s national soccer team ahead of today’s World Cup semifinal against Germany. On and off the field, though, there are few signs of her. For both the squad and the player, this is a welcome development. Early this month, on the eve of the group opener, the goalkeeper’s dark past resurfaced after fresh details about her 2014 domestic violence case emerged. Solo had not done anything new to bring it about, but her personal drama had again caught up to her. The timing of the latest story, which included allegations of an alcohol-fueled tirade against police officers, could not have been worse. As the Americans began the quest for their first World Cup title in 16 years, coach Jill Ellis and the players were answering questions about matters unrelated to the upcoming matches. But over the course of three weeks across Canada, Solo has become almost inconspicuous. She has not spoken publicly

since after the first game. From all indications, she has been a good teammate and positive influence during the World Cup odyssey. “I have really noticed her — on the field, off the field — just [having] a really good focus,” Ellis said after the 1-0 quarterfinal victory against China on Friday. Solo has benefited from the defense in front of her. Since rescuing the Americans with several sensational saves in the 3-1 opening victory against Australia, she has recorded four consecutive shutouts. The 423-minute streak is the third longest in tournament history. With these World Cup performances, Solo, 33, has set the record for most career victories (134) and appearances (175) by a U.S. goalkeeper in international play and extended her marks in shutouts (88) and starts (169). “She has made some saves that have kept us in games,” midfielder Morgan Brian said. “That’s what her job is. That’s what she’s been used to.” Opponents aren’t scoring because they aren’t getting chances. In the past four matches, the defense has conceded seven shots on goal. Solo’s intermittent saves have been routine, and for most of the 90 minutes, she is a lonely figure watching over an unthreatened fortress. Solo and the U.S. squad will

Goalie has stayed quiet during the U.S. team’s run to the semifinals

Since being selected with the No. 15 pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, Kelly Oubre Jr. has had a lot to say. Here are some verbal highlights from the newest Wizard.

U.S. goalie Hope Solo has recorded four straight shutouts in the World Cup.

The ‘jewel’ of the draft

“Whoever gets me is getting a jewel, you know what I mean?” he told ESPN after he was selected. “I’m ready to win a championship. And whatever team gets me, we’re winning a championship.”

World Cup semifinals preview GERMANY VS. UNITED STATES 7 p.m. today, Fox GERMANY: The top-ranked Germans have been to every Women’s

World Cup since it started in 1991, winning in 2003 and 2007. The team was shaken in 2011 when it failed to make it to the final at home, losing in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Japan. UNITED STATES: The U.S. is ranked No. 2, having fallen out of the top spot late last year after six years at No. 1. The Americans have been to every Women’s World Cup, winning in 1991 and 1999. The U.S. is the only team to have reached the semifinals in all seven tournaments.

2 Wizard blood

“I’m a Washington Wizard, so I definitely take pride in that,” he said on draft night. “I’m being insulated with Washington blood now, so I’m definitely bleeding Wizard blood.”

JAPAN VS. ENGLAND 5 p.m. Wednesday, Fox Sports 1 JAPAN: Fourth-ranked Japan is the defending World Cup champion,

defeating the U.S. on penalty kicks in the final four years ago to become the first Asian team to win the tournament. It was the first time Japan had advanced past the quarterfinals. ENGLAND: At No. 6, England is the lowest ranked team remaining.

face their stiffest test to date against No. 1 Germany, which leads the tournament by a wide margin in goals with 20. And when the U.S. World Cup effort ends, whether against Japan or England in the third-place match Saturday in Edmonton or Sunday’s final in Vancouver, Solo

Right wing T.J. Oshie had 19 goals and 36 assists in 72 regular-season games for the St. Louis Blues last year.

Capitals in the market for top-line right winger GM: Lack of cap space could force the team to add assets via trade CAPITALS A year after signing defensemen Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen to long-term deals on the first day of free agency, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan does not expect to make a similar splash when unrestricted free agency begins Wednesday. “I anticipate not being active right off the hop,” MacLellan told reporters at the NHL draft over the weekend. “I don’t know if we have the [salary cap space] to be able to do that.” The Capitals continue to negotiate with their restricted free agents Braden Holtby, Marcus Johansson and Evgeny Kuznetsov, and MacLellan hopes the club can land a top-line right winger. After a season in which Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom skated with nine different wingers, MacLellan would like a more consistent option on the No. 1 line. Top-line wingers are coveted

assets around the league and MacLellan has said a trade may be necessary to bring one to Washington. Here’s a list of potential right wing targets for the Capitals, via trade or free agency:

T.J. Oshie (trade)

teams have expressed interest in acquiring the four-time 30-goal scorer, who led the Blackhawks in power play goals in each of the past two seasons. Sharp, who has reached the Western Conference final five times in the past seven years, would provide the Capitals with a proven playoff performer.

2014-15: 72 GP, 19 G, 36 A (Blues)

MacLellan has suggested that Tom Wilson or Andre Burakovsky could be a fit on the Capitals’ No. 1 line, but that a short-term bridge would be ideal. Enter Oshie, 28, who has two years left on his current deal. The versatile forward has played on both special teams units in St. Louis and developed into a key cog on a team that plays a brand of heavy hockey similar to the one the Capitals have developed under Barry Trotz.

Patrick Sharp (trade) ’14-15: 68 GP, 16 G, 27 A (Blackhawks)

Fresh off their third Stanley Cup in six years, the Blackhawks face a salary cap crunch, with Sharp, 33, a prime candidate to move on. The Chicago Tribune reported last weekend that as many as five

Justin Williams (free agency) ’14-15: 81 GP, 18 G, 23 A (Kings)

Williams is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and won the Conn Smythe Trophy (playoff MVP) in 2014. His 7-0 lifetime record in Game 7s (to go along with seven goals and an NHLrecord 14 points) would also be a welcome addition in Washington. The unrestricted free agent will be 34 next season and could command a three- or four-year deal, which may be too long for the Capitals, who will likely be seeking a short-term stopgap.

Ian Desmond’s struggles at the plate this season have been well-documented. The Nationals shortstop is hitting .225 average and has struck out on 27 percent of his plate appearances. On Sunday, though, Desmond showed some positive signs, including when he hit a 450-foot homer. From June 2 to June 20, Desmond was 9-for-66. But he is five for his last 16 — with two of those hits being home runs. It’s not the kind of hot streak he has proven capable of for three seasons now, but perhaps it’s the beginning of a positive stretch. “Baby steps,” Desmond said Sunday. “I feel like I’m moving in the right direction.” Hitting coach Rick Schu said he sees Desmond “slowing down a little bit” at the plate and “swinging at better pitches.” The Nationals open a three-game series tonight against the Braves, a team Desmond has hit .161 against in eight games this season. Capitals re-sign Beagle to three-year extension The Capitals knocked one more item from their offseason agenda Monday, announcing a three-year contract extension for forward Jay Beagle worth $1.75 million per season. Both sides entered summer knowing they wanted to discuss a new deal for the center, a pending unrestricted free agent who set career highs with 10 points, 10 assists and 20 points last season, and talks ramped up before the NHL draft last weekend. He will make $1.45 million next season with a $300,000 bonus, then $1.75 million for the 2015-16 and 201617 seasons. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

STUDIES SHOW…

VICTORIA ST. MARTIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Fitness’ food isn’t as good as you think

Sixteen of Lisa Clark’s belly dance students are members of her dance troupe, Suburban Gypsies, which performs at county fairs and festivals.

In the belly of the beat In Manassas, Va., women of all ages and sizes shake it at Magnificent Belly Dance SELF-IMAGE Lisa Clark remembers it well. She was heading into a belly dance class in the Washington area when someone asked her a question. “Are you here to pick someone up?” Clark remembers the receptionist asking, as if she couldn’t believe a curvy woman in her 40s would want to participate in the upcoming session. “I said, ‘No, I’m here for class,’ ” said Clark, who recalled that almost no one in the class was older than 30. “And she looked me up and down and said, ‘Oh.’ ” “I thought how unfair that is, that people who are older and not size 2 were kind of discriminated against,” she added. So, a few years later, in 2007, she started her own studio. That comment 10 years ago inspired her Manassas studio’s tag line: “Belly dance for

the everyday woman.” Clark, who coyly says she’s in her late 50s, said Magnificent Belly Dance — one of the only studios of its kind in Prince William County — is for women of all sizes and all ages. She carries hip scarves in sizes ranging from petite to “Goddess” and has about 30 students. Sixteen of them shimmy in her inclusive dance troupe. Clark says belly dancing is a self-esteem booster, adding that she sees her students go from shy to brave in just a few classes. “You’ve learned something that … other people are too scared to learn,” she said. Gabrielle Toy, a 28-year-old government contractor, began belly dancing four months ago after she came across a Groupon deal. She said she’s picked up a new attitude along with her new moves. “I’ve noticed that I’m more

confident in the way that I stand and in the way that I walk,” said Toy, who lives in Manassas. She added that the “air that I have around me” has changed — she’s more aware of her back, her hips, her posture. When Clark’s dancers perform at county fairs and festivals, they shimmy, and then there are chest lifts, lots of hip slides and a few chest drops. With each move, they said, they’re breaking down

the misconceptions people have about belly dancers; no one is too old or too heavy to do it. Clark said her dancers even modify moves. One person has arthritis in her knees? Then only half the group lands on one knee while the other half stands. Someone’s bad leg prevents her from doing the Egyptian move without support? They all hold hands and do it together. Ann Kilkelly, a Virginia Tech professor, dance scholar and 68-year-old dancer, said that, in the United States, people generally think of dance “as something young people do and old people don’t.” “In reality, that’s a very narrow picture,” Kilkelly said. “There are many parts of the world where old women and men dance, where fat is valued, where body size is part of a sense of well-being.” VICTORIA ST. A new study published in the Journal of Marketing Research has shattered our dreams about our favorite trail mix and energy bars. Fitness-branded snacks can actually promote weight-conscious people to eat more and exercise less, which can potentially lead to weight gain. The 162 participants were given a bag of trail mix — either a normal pack or one marketed as a “fitness” food. The second phase of the study had participants exercise on a stationary bike after snacking. Those given a bag marketed as “fitness” ate 59 more calories on average and exercised less vigorously, burning around 11 fewer calories than regular snackers. ZAINAB MUDALLAL (EXPRESS)

man, but we’re not really friends. I just don’t bother to bring up certain things, mostly because he lectures me for hours and views everything negatively. I feel like I’m not being me because I keep things to myself. He doesn’t like my best friend, so now I feel even more cut off. I really want stability for me and my child but feel I’ve made a big mistake. HELP!

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

For crying out loud, just let it go Q. My husband, our toddler and I flew across country to visit my sister. When we arrived, my toddler started having daily temper tantrums. My sister’s wife was passive-aggressive about it, rolling her eyes and commenting to her dog: “I’m not going to let you walk all over me.” I apologized but said tantrums are normal after a long trip. Do I bring it up again? NOT FEELING WARM TOWARD SISTER-IN-LAW People not used to day-to-day toddler interactions may make all kinds of faces during temper tantrums or explosive diaper incidents, some of those faces more obnoxious than others. I can understand it didn’t make you want to nominate your sisin-law for sainthood, but it’s just one of many quirks that family members might have, and over time you’ll need to learn not to

take it personally. You did the right thing by broaching it, but save your energy and let it lie. With time and experience, your sis-inlaw may get a reality check, or may not. View her intolerance like a tantrum itself: an understandable attempt to exert control in a strange new environment — in this case, a little human invading her house.

So he’s wonderful, right? In what way — his sparkling teeth? He’s unsupportive, negative, defensive, unresponsive to feedback, isolating and makes you feel that choosing him was a big mistake. If somehow that equals desirable “stability,” then I wonder why you’re selling yourself so short. What makes you possibly think you don’t deserve a more supportive relationship, with a true partner who values your opinions, listens and understands you in the ways you need and respects your right to have friends even if he doesn’t necessarily like them? If you can’t recognize your own need for something better, think of your child — and what you want them to learn about how relationships should be. Trump refuses to back down from his remarks about Mexican immigrants.

Trump dumped by NBCUniversal Network severs ties with the mogul over his anti-immigrant remarks TELEVISION NBCUniversal announced Monday that it would stop working with Donald Trump, even on his reality show “The Apprentice.” Following the lead of Spanishlanguage broadcaster Univision, NBC said it will also no longer air the Trump-partnered pageants Miss USA and Miss Universe, citing his “derogatory statements” about Mexican immigrants. Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” had been renewed, but was on hold as Trump launched a campaign to seek the Republican nomination for president. NBC said Trump would no longer be participating in the program. Over the weekend, a number of Hispanic groups put pressure on NBC to cut off Trump after his comments at his June 16 rally

that immigrants coming over the U.S.-Mexican border were “rapists” and drug dealers. Soon after the announcement, Trump released a statement criticizing the network. “If NBC is so weak and so foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem in the United States, coupled with the horrendous and unfair trade deals we are making with Mexico, then their contract violating closure of Miss Universe/ Miss USA will be determined in court,” he said. “Furthermore, they will stand behind lying Brian Williams, but won’t stand behind people that tell it like it is.” Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who in some polls is the only Republican ahead of Trump, initially smiled and turned away when told by reporters about NBC’s decision, but then added: “He’s worth nine billion bucks, so he’ll be able to survive.” COLBY ITKOWITZ (THE WASHINGTON POST)

This project (NIH Study #14-AA-0042) aims to study a trial drug which may decrease alcohol use. We would like to determine whether this drug is safe and acceptable when given along with alcohol. Successful volunteers will be: - In good health and drug free - Between the ages of 21 and 65 - Willing to come for two outpatient visits and three inpatient visits (each inpatient visit includes four overnight stays at the NIH Clinical Center). Participants will have a free medical evaluation and be compensated for doing the study. Transportation to and from all visits will be provided. Study enrollment will be limited to 12 participants. For more details, email cpn_research@mail.nih.gov

“I laugh every damn time I watch the Olivia Munn/ Aaron Rodgers sword training video. His troll job and ‘come get some’ motion is great.” @THEREALBOBEVANS is delighted by an Instagram video Olivia Munn posted Sunday. In the clip, the actress practices her swordfighting skills for her part in the upcoming “X-Men: Apocalypse” film, while her boyfriend, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, can be seen in the background trying his best to keep up.

“I can see both sides … cops shouldn’t be above the law, for sure … but they have an extremely difficult, life and death job.” COMMENTER UNTITLED AT JEZEBEL

DO YOU DRINK A LOT OF ALCOHOL? Do you also feel tense, worried, or distressed? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a study. The goal of this project (NIH Study #13-AA-0040) is to study whether a medication (Baclofen) currently approved to treat muscle spasms affects alcohol drinking.

.COM is torn over a decision from the New York Court of Appeals that it is legal to yell and curse at police officers. The decision came last week after a man was convicted of disorderly conduct after he shouted obscenities and “gesticulated” at a group of officers in the subway.

DO YOU DRINK A LOT OF ALCOHOL?

“Someone interrupted the Zac Brown Band and J.J. Watt proved he’d be the best security guard on the planet.” @FBUNORTHEAST sees a viable post-NFL career for the Houston Texans defensive end after he “tackled” a fan who rushed the stage during a Zac Brown Band performance Sunday. When a fan jumped on stage, Watt, who is a friend to the country band, ran from the wings and tackled him to the ground. (But please, don’t actually try to provoke a 6-foot-5 NFL player — this was pretty clearly a staged stunt.)

Eligible volunteers will be: - In good health and drug free - Between the ages of 21 and 65 - Willing to come for four outpatient visits and one overnight stay at the NIH CC in Bethesda, MD. Participants will receive a free medical evaluation and will be paid for doing the study.

“This is the app I’ve always wanted” @OOGALABOOGALA is excited about a new creative tool from the founder of Vine. Byte is a difficultto-explain creation tool that’s meant to give users the power in editing and creating media. Tap on a canvas to add images from online and add to them. Create miniature, looping synths of sound that play inside your creation. Insert memes and emoji. The iPhone app launches in late July.

“Babies singing ‘Froot’ dressed as Froot. I can’t cope. This. Is. My jam. It’s honestly the best cover I have ever seen.” MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS,

on her Facebook page, is seriously impressed by a group of schoolchildren performing a cover of her song “Froot.” The children were dressed in various fruit costumes and breaking some serious dance moves.

Yet more bad luck for Bristol Palin

FREDERICK M. BROWN (GETTY IMAGES)

Levi Johnston, father of Bristol Palin’s first child, 6-year-old Tripp, told TMZ he will do what he can to help Palin raise her second child. “She’s a great mom,” he said, despite bad blood over custody of Tripp. According to TMZ, Johnston also said he feels bad that Palin has been having bad luck — calling off her wedding, etc. (EXPRESS)

An Egyptian reality show lured Paris Hilton into an airplane and convinced her it was going to crash, Gossip Cop reported. The host of “Ramez in Control,” Ramez Galal, got Hilton to take a supposed aerial tour of Dubai, where she was attending a hotel opening. The pilot made the plane drop and actors onboard played along. Hilton seemed to believe the crash was real. (EXPRESS)

Caitlyn knows how to make friends at parties Caitlyn Jenner attended New York City Pride and made it rain at a party, E! News reported. She arrived at the event with six friends and took several selfies. “Everyone started chanting, ‘Caitlyn, Caitlyn,’ ” an eyewitness said. “She got up and waved and smiled at everyone.” During Candis Cayne’s performance of “I Am a Woman,” Jenner made it rain money. You may resume mocking, judging Bristol Palin, who said on her blog Thursday that her pregnancy “has been, and will be, a huge disappointment to my family, to my close friends, and to many of you,” said in a post Sunday that the pregnancy was planned. “So here are the things you should all get straight before you continue to mock me, judge me, and talk about me,” she wrote. “I made a mistake, but it’s not the mistake all these giddy a$$holes have loved to assume.” She continued, “Everyone knows I wanted more kids, to have a bigger family. Believing I was heading that way, I got ahead of myself.” (EXPRESS)
