Construction workers in the Flatiron section of Manhattan dug up what appeared to be an old bomb Wednesday but actually was a time capsule from a club that helped launch Madonna’s career. Police quickly determined the device wasn’t dangerous. It was buried in 1985 by clubgoers from the Danceteria. “It was just an excuse to do a party,” former owner John Argento said. “We forgot about it and went on to the next party.” (AP)
Los Angeles TV reporter Wendy Burch learned the hazards Tuesday of covering a contest that involves physical challenges and chugging beer. While she interviewed a participant who seemed to be holding his beer well, UPI reported, they both were vomited on by a competitor off-camera. It turns out the man she was interviewing for KTLA had a bull’s-eye drawn on his back with the words “puke here” written in magic marker. (EXPRESS)
Maine State Police said they arrested the driver of a stolen vehicle who identified himself as Santa Claus after a nearly 50-mile chase on July Fourth. The pursuit started in Clinton after police tried to pull the driver over for a traffic violation. The chase reached 112 mph before spike strips were deployed in Newburgh, about 30 miles away. Police said the driver, 54, went another 15 miles on flat tires before he was caught. (AP)

D.C.: The capital of dissent THE DISTRICT One out of every three Washingtonians has marched in protest against President Trump or his policies at least once since January, making D.C. the capital of national dissent, a new Washington Post poll finds. But a clear racial divide exists among those who have attended the demonstrations since Trump took office, starting with the Women’s March on Washington the day after his inauguration and continuing through the winter and spring with marches against the president’s policies on climate change, health care, immigration and a host of other issues. According to the Post poll, 53 percent of white residents participated in a march or demonstration in opposition to Trump’s policies since the start of the year, compared with 16 percent of African-Americans and 36 percent of Hispanics and those of other racial and ethnic groups. The District is an overwhelmingly Democratic city in which more than 90 percent of the

electorate voted for Hillary Clinton over Trump on Nov. 8. Since the election, many residents say, a sense of unease and even despondency has pervaded the city — and not just because the new resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW is a Republican. Trump and his advisers have also alienated Washingtonians with an often abrasive freewheeling style that challenges more genteel traditions embedded in the city’s political culture. “It seems a lot harsher; it feels

a lot meaner; it feels more like facts don’t matter anymore,” said Keith Krueger, 60, who is white, lives in Northwest and runs an educational nonprofit. He attended the women’s march and “one of the environmental ones” — he could not recall which. “Most of the people I know are upset about the direction of the country. Everything seems to be a whiplash from the Obama years.” Marcus Murchison, 44, an African-American budget analyst who works for the federal government, said it is too soon to measure the full impact of Trump’s policy decisions, although he understands that many Washingtonians are fearful, as if there were a “tornado coming up the coast.” Instead of attending marches, Murchison, who lives in the Hillcrest neighborhood in Southeast, said he finds it more productive to express himself on social media and at small gatherings. “I do believe demonstrations serve a purpose, but I’m leaving that to younger people,” he said. “I need to speak up in my own circles. You have to start with your friends and family and bring another perspective.” PAUL SCHWARTZMAN AND EMILY GUSKIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Purple hazy, hot and humid THE DISTRICT Arash Shirazi is a pretty cosmopolitan guy. A music agent and filmmaker, he hangs out with creative types. He’s lived in Los Angeles, and spent time in cities such as, yes, Amsterdam, so it’s fair to say that he’s not particularly prudish in his social life. And yet … leaving a D.C. parking lot recently, he took pause when a distinctively skunky scent passed under his nostrils. Of course he’d smelled marijuana before. But this was a weekday afternoon — in Georgetown! “I was surprised,” he explained. “Georgetown’s a bit more buttoned-up.” Well, that’s what they used to say about Washington in general. But now, more than two years after the District legalized marijuana possession, it seems that everywhere you go in the nation’s capital, you catch a whiff of weed. And it’s often in the places where you least expect it. On H Street downtown, as you wind your way between office workers rushing back from lunch. At 10th and E streets NW, i n the shadow of the F BI headquarters. In the hallway of your apartment building. In the foyer of your gym. In Aisle 9 of the WalMart, wafting in through the beach towels. (Wait, Wal-Mart?). If you’re seeking it out, you can find the flower in Washington

in almost any form: crushed, concentrated, liquefied, baked into an omelet. Puffing in public remains prohibited, but you can toke up at a wide variety of private events, enroll in a gardening class or host a catered dinner party where appetizer, entree and dessert are all “infused.” LeafedIn, a site that pinpoints consumers and vendors on city maps, shows downtown Washington buried under cannabis leaf icons. There’s even one hovering over the White House. For those who don’t partake, this world is largely invisible, if
not odorless. And now that it’s summer, the humidity keeping all scents close, it’s ever more obvious: Washington is smoking more weed than you ever realized. Stephen Sears, an academic librarian who lives on Capitol Hill, calls it “ghost weed syndrome” — that lingering sense of a scent, unmistakable but often untraceable. Theoretically, we should all be much more blase about this — nearly 70 percent of D.C. residents voted for legalization. And yet the city’s sharp new fragrance remains a curiosity.
Who’s that smoking? Where’s that coming from? “You have to wonder if these older Capitol Hill denizens have been smoking this whole time,” Sears muses. To navigate this District of Cannabis, a man named Joe Tierney offers his services. Blogging under the name of the Gentleman Toker, he reviews local brands of marijuana and can tell you pretty much anything you want to know about where, when and what D.C.’s smoking. “When I see people on social media asking, like, ‘Where do I find weed?’ ‘How do I navigate the scene?’ It really hits me,” Tierney says. “I want to help them.” Here’s how you can help, Joe. Where’s that smell coming from? He’s got a few theories. In the downtown office corridors? That’s a sweet spot, actually — not enough of a nightlife scene to attract police presence, but not too touristy either. A toker can easily fly under the radar. Outside the FBI building? Hard-core activists sticking it to the man. Tierney has seen the boasts on social media. And in the no-smoking confines of a discount department store? Probably just a fellow shopper who recently hotboxed, i.e., lit up in an enclosed space. The stuff can really stick to your clothes. Really, Tierney says, there’s almost nowhere you won’t smell it. One tip: If you smell it once, expect to smell it again. “Cannabis enthusiasts are creatures of habit,” he explains. MAIA SILBER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Inmate’s execution allowed to proceed VIRGINIA Virginia’s Democratic governor said Thursday he wouldn’t spare the life of an inmate whose lawyers say he was under the influence of delusions when he killed two men during an escape in 2006. Gov. Terry McAuliffe said in a statement that he didn’t find a substantial enough reason to intervene in the case of 35-yearold William Morva, who was scheduled to be receive a lethal injection Thursday evening. “At the conclusion of that review, I have determined that Mr. Morva was given a fair trial and that the jury heard substantial evidence about his mental health as they prepared to sentence him in accordance with the law of our Commonwealth,” McAuliffe said. “In short, the record before me does not contain sufficient evidence to warrant the extraordinary step of overturning the decision of a lawfully empaneled jury following a properly conducted trial.” Morva’s attorneys said he had a profound mental illness that made him believe his life in jail was in danger when he went on the killing spree. attorneys also said jurors weren’t aware how severe his mental illness was before they sentenced him to death. Jurors were told Morva suffered from a personality disorder that resulted in “odd beliefs,” but not delusions. He was later diagnosed with delusional disorder, a more severe mental illness akin to schizophrenia that makes it impossible for him to distinguish between delusions and reality, his attorneys said. A prosecutor in Morva’s case had urged McAuliffe not to intervene, saying in a letter that several experts who examined Morva before his trial agreed he had a “superior IQ” and suffered from a variety of personality disorders. Police: School aide accused of abuse had youth contact
A volunteer firefighter has accused a career firefighter of assaulting him at the scene of a house fire in Maryland. Berwyn Heights Police Chief Kenneth Antolik confirmed police are investigating seconddegree assault in the Sunday incident. The volunteer firefighter said a Prince George’s County Fire and EMS officer pushed him during an argument. The house fire was quickly controlled. Prince George’s County Fire and EMS spokesman Mark Brady said both firefighters were immediately removed from emergency operations and an investigation will determine if any additional disciplinary action is warranted. Antolik said it’s too early to determine if criminal charges will be filed. (AP)
Three Baltimore police officers charged in a racketeering conspiracy are now facing additional robbery charges. Federal prosecutors earlier this year announced charges against seven Baltimore officers. Prosecutors said the officers used their position on a gun task force to detain people under false pretenses and steal from them, and that they faked police reports, lied to investigators and defrauded their department. On Thursday, prosecutors said that a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging three of the officers with additional robberies. Federal prosecutors said 13 robberies were committed by Sgt. Wayne Jenkins, Detective Daniel Hersl and Detective Marcus Taylor. (AP)

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office said this week that Bell molested at least seven boys on school property, at his home and possibly at other locations. Authorities said none of the victims has tested positive for HIV but that testing is ongoing. (AP)

Opioid prescriptions fall for first time since ’90s
THE DISTRICT
verbatim
HEALTH The number of prescriptions for opioids written by health care providers declined between 2012 and 2015, the government reported Thursday, introducing a glimmer of progress in efforts to quell the worst drug epidemic in U.S. history. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said prescriptions for highly addictive painkillers such as oxycodone dropped 13.1 percent over the three-year period, from 81.2 per 100 people to 70.6. Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s acting director, expressed tempered optimism about the first national decline in opioid prescriptions that the CDC has reported since the crisis began in the late 1990s. She said the prescription rate is still triple the level it was in 1999 and four times what it is in some European countries. Even at the reduced prescribing rate, she said, enough opioids were ordered in 2015 to keep every American medicated round-theclock for three weeks. “It looks a little bit better, but you really have to put that in context,” Schuchat said. “We’re still seeing too many people get too much for too long.” The overprescribing of legal opioids sparked the addiction

crisis, but some addicts eventually move to cheaper or stronger drugs, especially if they run into difficulty obtaining prescription opioids. In recent years the overdose death rate from illicit drugs, such as heroin and fentanyl, has risen much faster than the rate of overdoses from medical narcotics. That means the decline in prescriptions may trigger fewer first-time addictions in the future, Schuchat said. The improvement should be viewed “as prevention,” Schuchat said. “The fewer we get started, the fewer we get addicted to opioids.” Prescription opioids alone killed nearly 180,000 people
from 2000 to 2015, and overdoses, abuse and dependence on medical narcotics created an annual “economic burden” estimated at $78.5 billion, the report said. The report also found that doctors in some counties in hard-hit parts of Appalachia, the Southwest and New England prescribed the equivalent of 958 to 5,543 milligrams of morphine per capita in 2015. In other locations, prescribers authorized zero to 454 milligrams in the same year. The drugs were more heavily prescribed in small-town America, in counties with larger white populations and in places where unemployment and Medicaid enrollment are higher. LENNY BERNSTEIN

nation+world In provocative address, Trump questions the West’s ‘will to survive’ WARSAW, POLAND President Trump on Thursday reaffirmed the United States’ bond with European allies, calling their pact as “strong as ever.” Yet he argued in a speech that Western values are increasingly imperiled by terrorism and extremism. In a dark and provocative address with nationalist overtones, Trump said that “the fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive.” “Do we have the confidence in our values to defend them at any cost?” Trump said. “Do we have enough respect for our citizens
to protect our borders? Do we have the desire and the courage to preserve our civilization in the face of those who would subvert and destroy it?” The president delivered his remarks at the site of a Warsaw monument to the 1944 Polish resistance against German occupation, a symbol of the country’s struggle to shake the brutal Nazi invasion during World War II. He cast Poland as an example of a nation that had persevered despite grave challenges, saying it offered “the story of a people who have never lost hope, who have never been broken, and who have never forgotten who they are.” Trump’s address in front of a friendly crowd came ahead of his travels to Germany for the Group

of 20 summit of world leaders. Trump is also expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in their first face-to-face
encounter. During his address in Warsaw, Trump rebuked Russia on several counts, including its military incursion into Ukraine. Earlier, Trump refused to say definitively that he believes Russia was solely responsible for interference in the 2016 U.S. election: “I think it could very well have been Russia, but I think it could well have been other countries.” Trump’s speech was also notable for its explicit commitment to Article 5, the collective security provision of the NATO treaty. Trump had left out a mention of it during a speech in May at NATO’s headquarters. The policy says that an attack on any alliance nation is an attack on all of them.

FOREIGN POLICY The leaders of the European Union and Japan on Thursday said their agreement in principle on free trade is the best antidote to the protectionism seen as being promoted by the Trump administration. The leaders said in a statement that the EU and Japan “demonstrate to the world — and to our citizens” that free trade remains vital to boosting living standards. Countering calls for protectionism, EU Council President Donald Tusk said the political agreement proves that “the world doesn’t need to go 100 years back in time,” when open trade was not as prevalent. The deal, clinched Wednesday before Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s arrival at the Group of 20 summit of world leaders in Hamburg, Germany, covers regions equivalent to one-third of the world economy. Since it was a political agreement — meaning some details have to be filled in — the timing of the deal after four years of talks was key. Abe and Tusk will be able to hold the deal up this week as evidence in support of free trade. The deal eliminates tariffs on many goods and services, making some products cheaper for consumers. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker estimated that EU winemakers would save 134 million euros a year and leather and shoe manufacturers 174 million euros. RAF CASERT (AP)

While Trump is known to use forceful presidential handshakes to show dominance, Putin’s power plays can be more subtle. He was 40 minutes late for a meeting with Obama at the G-20 summit in Mexico in 2012 and kept Kerry waiting for three hours in Moscow in 2013. Yet for a macho leader who has been photographed riding a horse shirtless and drilling for oil, Putin’s demeanor in person is remarkably calm and composed, U.S. officials said. More recently, Putin said with a straight face on Russian television that he would offer asylum to former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired. Another major frustration for the Americans has been that Putin does not always have a high regard for facts. Antony Blinken, a former high-ranking aide to both Obama and Biden, recalled several Oval Office calls during which Putin would claim to Obama that there were no Russians in Ukraine. “Obama would say to him, ‘Vladimir, we can see things. We have eyes. We know it’s not true,’ ” Blinken recalled. Trump, too, has developed a reputation for ignoring facts in favor of bluster and bullying. “You have two of the most powerful leaders with the most adversarial relationships with the truth,” Blinken said. “Trump does things in a theatrical way. Putin is the antithesis of that. But the objective is the same: Whatever advances the ends you’re trying to achieve, it’s fine.” DAVID NAKAMURA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FOREIGN POLICY As President Trump prepares for his first face-to-face meeting this week with Vladimir Putin, in Hamburg, Germany, those who have negotiated with the Russian leader caution that Trump must be ready for a shrewd, well-prepared and implacable adversary. Putin — who reclaimed the presidency in 2012 — has outlasted three U.S. presidents, shifting his persona but never his demands, according to interviews with former aides with firsthand knowledge of the conversations. Bill Clinton shared a dinner of spicy wild boar with him at the presidential palace. George W. Bush looked in his eyes to get “a sense of his soul.” Barack Obama pursued a “reset” of a troubled relationship. But all three failed to forge a personal bond with Putin as bilateral relations tumbled into an ever-worsening state. Trump professed admiration for Putin during his campaign, calling Putin a stronger leader than Obama. But their coming meeting has been tainted by an FBI investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives who allegedly meddled to aid Trump in the U.S. election. White House officials have said there is no formal agenda for the meeting, and they were noncommittal about whether the president intends to raise the election issue with Putin. The meeting will be watched closely for the tone Trump takes with his counterpart. Jon Finer, who served as an aide to former Vice President Joe Biden in the White House and as chief of staff to John F. Kerry when Kerry was secretary of state, said it is imperative for Trump to draw “clear lines about
NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump warned Thursday that North Korea could face “some pretty severe” consequences after its defiant test of an intercontinental ballistic missile, but Washington also confronted firm opposition from Russia and China over any possible response. Trump did not specify potential U.S.-directed punishment for North Korea, which on Tuesday launched a missile that experts say had a range that made it capable of reaching Alaska. Yet efforts to find consensus among world powers appeared to hit a wall — sharply limiting Trump’s options. New sanctions would have little effect unless backed by China, which is the North’s financial lifeline. Russia also has rejected further economic pressures on the regime of Kim Jong Un. In Warsaw, Poland, ahead of Group of 20 meetings in Germany, Trump said the U.S. was considering “some pretty severe things” in response to what he called “very, very bad behavior” from the North, although he did not mention any specific plans. “Something will have to be done about it,” he said. Pentagon officials this week have sought to underscore that the ICBM threat posed by North Korea is “nascent,” and that Pyongyang still has a long way to go in terms of understanding the trajectory of the missiles and re-entry before it could hit North America. Craft store chain Hobby Lobby agreed to pay a $3 million federal fine and forfeit thousands of religious artifacts.
Hobby Lobby penalized for smuggled artifacts U.S. says chain illegally obtained thousands of Iraqi religious items COURTS Hobby Lobby Stores has agreed to pay a $3 million federal fine and forfeit thousands of ancient Iraqi religious artifacts smuggled from the Middle East that the government alleges were intentionally mislabeled for import, federal prosecutors said. The craft store chain’s devout Christian owners have long shown an interest in the biblical Middle East and started to collect artifacts from the region in 2009, according to a civil complaint filed in New York on Wednesday. Hobby Lobby President Steve Green is the owner of one of the
largest collections of religious artifacts in the world and is building a Museum of the Bible, due to open in November in the former Washington Design Center in the District. Green said in a statement that the Oklahoma City-based company cooperated with the government and “should have exercised more oversight and carefully questioned how the acquisitions were handled.” Hobby Lobby executed an agreement to purchase more than 5,500 artifacts in December 2010 for $1.6 million, the complaint says. Prosecutors said acquisition of the artifacts “was fraught with red flags” and that packages bore shipping labels that described their contents as “ceramic tiles.” Importing Iraqi cultural
property into the United States has been restricted since 1990 and banned outright since 2004, according to the complaint. Under Iraqi law, all antiquities found in Iraq are considered property of the state, and private people cannot generally possess them without authorization of the Iraqi government, the complaint says. Hobby Lobby also has been in the headlines for other reasons. The chain challenged President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, saying it didn’t want to provide certain forms of birth control for its employees, citing religious objections. In June 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Hobby Lobby’s favor, saying the company’s rights had been violated. (AP)
A trillion-ton, 600-footthick iceberg nearly the size of Delaware is poised to detach from one of the largest floating ice shelves in Antarctica. Scientists have been expecting the break from the Larsen C ice shelf, monitoring the progress of a crack that has extended to over 100 miles long. The latest update from scientists with NASA and the University of California, Irvine found that only 3 miles of ice continue to connect the iceberg to the shelf. The expected calving event won’t affect global sea level, because the ice was already afloat. But some scientists fear the event could hasten the destabilization of the larger Larsen C ice shelf. Did Earhart survive 1937 crash?
A recently discovered photo suggests that famed aviator Amelia Earhart, who disappeared while attempting the first round-the-world flight 80 years ago, may have survived a crash landing in the Japanese-held Marshall Islands, adding fuel to the theory that she was captured by the Japanese. The blurry photo, found in the National Archives and featured in a History Channel special, purportedly shows Earhart, her navigator and their plane on a dock in the Marshall Islands. (TWP)

Massive iceberg about to detach from Antarctica
POLITICS The director of the independent Office of Government Ethics, who has been the federal government’s most persistent critic of the Trump administration’s approach to ethics, announced Thursday that he is resigning nearly six months before the end of his term. Walter M. Shaub Jr. repeatedly challenged the Trump administration, publicly urging President Trump to fully divest from his business empire and chastising a senior Trump adviser for violating ethics rules. His outspokenness drew the ire of administration officials and earned him near-cult status among Trump’s opponents. Shaub made no reference to those clashes in a resignation letter he posted Thursday indicating he will step down July 19. He praised the work of federal ethics officials, pointedly noting their commitment to “protecting the principle that public service is a public trust.” Shaub said he was not leaving under pressure, and that no one in the administration pushed him to leave. But the ethics chief said he felt that he had reached the limit of what he could achieve in this administration, within the current ethics framework. “It’s clear that there isn’t more I could accomplish,” he said. White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said Trump will nominate a successor “in short order.” ROSALIND S. HELDERMAN AND MATEA GOLD (TWP)

THREE POINTERS
Kirk Cousins has a chance to sign a historic deal on the open market as a free agent in 2018.
SALLY JENKINS | THE WASHINGTON POST
Patience will pay: Cousins can strike blow for NFL labor Leverage is only leverage if you’re willing to use it. Kirk Cousins already has pried $44 million in fully guaranteed cash out of an NFL team owner’s pocket, because he was willing to bet on himself. Owners hate paying guaranteed money more than they hate paying taxes. For his next trick, Cousins should show them what a true free agent looks like. He should decline to sign a longterm deal with the Redskins, who have until July 17 to get one done, and bet on himself again, forcing the Redskins and the NFL next year to do what they so seldom have to: deal in an open market. Players drive $14 billion in NFL revenue, more than
any sports league by several billions. Yet they have the worst contracts and financial participation, and the fewest guarantees of any athletes. As league analyst and former Green Bay Packers vice president Andrew Brandt said, NFL players “are sitting at the children’s table” when it comes to money, career stability and balance of power. Last week Derek Carr signed a deal with the Raiders supposedly worth $125 million over five years — impressive, until you learn that just $40 million was guaranteed at signing. Meanwhile in the same city, in the same week, Steph Curry signed with the Warriors for $201 million over five years, every dime of it guaranteed. The truth? An NFL
quarterback can only envy an NBA point guard’s money and doesn’t have nearly his career stability. All of the talk around NFL contracts revolves around average yearly salary, but as Brandt pointed out in Sports Illustrated, most NFL deals are only good for the first couple of seasons. Somehow the risk, the variables of performance and injury, wind up coming out of NFL player contracts instead of the owner’s pockets. Colin Kaepernick signed a seven-year-deal with the 49ers, but only 11 percent was sure money, and he was gone after two years. NFL players are simply not getting their due. Why is it that NBA players get 51.1 percent of their league’s revenue, but
Cousins is not just negotiating for himself. He is negotiating for every guy in a uniform who has been treated as disposable.
Umpire Angel Hernandez, who sued MLB this week alleging racial discrimination, on All-Star Game crew
NFL players get only 47-48 percent — after the owners have taken $1 billion off the top? The NBA salary cap is $99 million for 450 players. The NFL cap is just $155 million for four times as many players. NFL revenues have grown by about 31 percent since the last bargaining agreement in 2011, yet the salary cap has barely increased. Last year it was an easy decision for Cousins to reject a lowball contract offer and play for one year of guaranteed money under the franchise tag. This time, he’ll need real resolve to reject a more generous offer. But if he can wait to become a free agent after next season, he might command as much as $30 million a year guaranteed. Redskins management dealt with Cousins as a depreciable asset rather than a valued employee, until they decided they needed him. Now Cousins has leverage — but it’s only real leverage if he is willing to say no to the deceptive “long-term” offer that is not truly secure without a guarantee of good hard cash money.

Best players available on the free agent market Most, if not all, of the big names in free agency have their deals locked up, with some of the highestvalued players inking new deals as the NBA’s moratorium ended Thursday. That leaves role players, unproven commodities and some diamonds in the rough for teams to pick over in hopes of improving their rosters for the upcoming season. Here are three of the best players left on the
GETTY IMAGES
market as of Thursday evening. NEIL GREENBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Ty Lawson
Tony Allen
Luc Mbah a Moute
The market for point guards is starting to get a little thin, but don’t discount what Lawson, 29, can offer. He averaged 9.9 points, 4.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 25.1 minutes per game for the Kings last season. And, despite some off-court issues, he can do two things every team wants from its point guard: drive and distribute. Lawson was second on the team in drives per game (7.3), and his assists generated 11.7 points per game. He has the speed and skill to take the ball coast to coast and create offense in transition, posting an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.4 while conducting the fast break.
David Aldridge of NBA.com reported that the Clippers are interested in the veteran shooting guard, and not just because of his connection with coach Doc Rivers dating back to their days in Boston. Allen, 35, is a proven defender who can get his hands in passing lanes. The six-time all-defensive team selection had 3.3 deflections per game last season for the Grizzlies, tied for sixth-highest among NBA guards, with 6.1 contested shots per game. His offense can be spotty, but he averaged 9.1 points in 27 minutes per game last season and can create offense as a ball handler in the pick and roll.
The small forward declined his player option with the Clippers to become an unrestricted free agent after averaging 6.1 points and 2.1 rebounds with 6.7 contested shots per game last season. Mbah a Moute, 30, also became more of a perimeter shooting threat, increasing his 3-point percentage to a career-high 39.1 percent in 2016-17. Granted, he took fewer than two 3-point shots per game, but opposing defenses now have to deal with this new wrinkle in the half court. This added dimension made him a part of one of the most efficient five-man lineups in the NBA last year.
ADAM EATON, rehabbing Nationals outfielder, telling The Washington Post about the lonely life of players on the disabled list. Left fielder Jayson Werth, who is expected to return from a foot injury after the All-Star break, said players treat teammates on the DL “like we’re lepers or something.”

‘The Journey’
Tom Holland will make you forget all about Tobey whatshisname and that Garfield guy.
KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
Baby, you’re a star: Tom Holland has it … whatever it is I can’t define what makes a leading man, but I know it when I see it. Those lucky few who belong to the category share certain qualities, of course — they’re conventionally handsome (OK, maybe Humphrey Bogart wasn’t exactly a hottie, but anyone looks good when reflecting the light shining from Lauren Bacall) and wryly funny, and they possess a subtle, easy charm that’s at once approachable and knee-weakening. Our modern apotheosis is, of course, George Clooney. There’s Ryan Gosling, his spiritual heir. Denzel Washington, yep. But beyond those three? We need to see Chris Pine, Donald Glover, John Cho
and Idris Elba in both good romantic comedies and tuxes to assess them fully. Leo tries too hard, McConaughey doesn’t try hard enough, Chris Pratt is a shade too goofy and, man, did Johnny Depp turn out to be a tool. Cary Grant, the Zeus in this pantheon, would be very disappointed in Johnny. Which brings us to Tom Holland and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” After his scene-stealing turn in last year’s “Captain America: Civil War” (by the way, Chris Evans is too safe and Robert Downey Jr. too dangerous to make the leading-man list), Holland takes center screen in this swoopingly fun, surprisingly heartfelt take on Spidey. The superhero’s well-trodden origin story is thankfully absent — at this point, not knowing
about the bite is akin to assuming Thomas and Martha Wayne are alive and well — so what we get is a spandex-clad coming-of-age story underscored with worries about Academic Decathlon and a crush on the pretty upperclassman who’s a head taller and a thousand times more popular. Holland essentially has to play two characters: the quippy, confident Spider-Man and Peter Parker, who wears T-shirts with physics jokes on them and would rather blend into the walls than swing from the rafters. Holland does both with more ease and believability than anyone playing a secret identity-carrying hero in recent memory
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (PG-13, 122 min.) DIRECTOR: Jon Watts STARS: Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei IN A NUTSHELL: Peter Parker balances life as Spider-Man with life in high school. And there’s a villain. Really, try not to find out any more plot details than that. It’ll be so much better.
Tyler, the Creator announces new album “Scum F--- Flower Boy,” out July 21
(coughAffleckcoughCavill), and he’s at his best in those moments when the friendly neighborhood heartthrob facade cracks, revealing glimpses of the nerd hidden inside. Holland is only 21 (though entirely believable as the 15-year-old Parker), so it remains to be seen if his boyish charm and immense talent will carry into his adult years. Young actors face plenty of challenges, both professional and personal, and with this role Holland can expect to be showing up in headlines of Us Weekly and its lowly ilk awfully soon. For now, though, his levity and heart make him a welcome addition to the team as we approach “Avengers: Infinity War.” And his work in other, non-heroed films — this Oscar season he’ll appear in “The Current War” with Avenger-adjacent prestige actor Benedict Cumberbatch — suggests he’s interested in his craft, not just cash. So it’s early, but welcome to the team, Tom. Let’s get you fitted for that tux. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby
SONY PICTURES
PG-13, 95 min.
“The Journey” offers a highly speculative version of the talk between opposing party leaders — the Rev. Ian Paisley (Timothy Spall) and Martin McGuinness (Colm Meaney) — that put an end to the conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles. The screenwriter’s ideas of what was said are not that riveting, but the message feels timely, with its story of entrenched political foes finding common ground. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘Moka’ Unrated, 89 min.
An adaptation of Tatiana de Rosnay’s 2007 novel, “Moka” is the story of a grieving mother (Emmanuelle Devos) pursuing a woman (Nathalie Baye) who she suspects killed her son in a hit-and-run. The film casts itself as a moody mystery, except without much mystery. Instead, it excels as a character study and a dynamic face-off between two formidable actresses. MARK JENKINS (TWP)

Warning: These nuns (Kate Micucci, Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza) aren’t as innocent as they seem.
GUNPOWDER & SKY
‘13 Minutes’ is a portrait of an almost-assassin
These nuns are getting frisky ‘The Little Hours’ is a vulgar, lust-filled take on a medieval classic FILM REVIEW Give writer-director Jeff Baena credit: Even when he aims high, that doesn’t stop him from going deliciously low. With “The Little Hours,” Baena takes his inspiration from no less rarefied a text than “The Decameron,” Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio’s sprawling set of 14th -century novellas. Baena combines a medievallooking setting with modern-day English and mannerisms to create a boldly anachronistic film, filled with humor that’s ribald and goofy, even after it begins to wear tiresomely thin. Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci
and Alison Brie play Fernanda, Genevra and Alessandra, three young nuns living under the tutelage of the gentle-souled Sister Marea (Molly Shannon) and a tippling priest named Father Tommasso (John C. Reilly). When Tommasso happens upon a servant named Massetto (Dave Franco), who escapes from a husband he’s been cuckolding, he takes him back to the convent to work as a day laborer. In the bucolic, repressed surroundings of the religious order, Massetto meets with the kind of pent-up sexual desires and machinations that are the stuff of lusty comedy, satiric eye-rolling and general slapstick malarkey. Note: Plaza, who’s credited as the film’s producer, also happens to be married to Baena, and Brie is married to Franco. With

such supporting players as Fred Armisen, Jemima Kirke, Nick Offerman and Lauren Weedman, “The Little Hours” has the feeling of a let’s-put-on-a-show lark. The experiment of putting Boccaccio into contemporary vernacular occasionally results in some inspired lunacy: If the novelty of nuns hurling F-bombs swiftly fades, Reilly is perfectly
deadpan during the film’s confession scenes, and Micucci delivers an eccentric performance as a vulnerable sister whose sexual adventures lead her to run, naked and belladonna-crazed, into a group of cavorting pagans. Even with Armisen’s late save of the show, as a disapproving bishop, however, “The Little Hours” seldom rises above a clever one-liner. There’s a subtext having to do with female empowerment, pietistic hypocrisy and finding God in the sacred and the profane, but it’s submerged under what is essentially a long, slightly wan Monty Python sketch. “The Little Hours” is a bawdy bagatelle that has more than a few droll moments. But it was probably at its most pleasurable and amusing in the making. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Kesha drops first new music since 2012
Kesha released the single “Praying” Thursday and announced a new album, “Rainbow,” out Aug. 11, her first since 2012’s “Warrior.” This is the pop artist’s first new music since a high-profile legal battle with Dr. Luke over a lawsuit accusing the music producer of sexual assault and harassment. In a Lenny Letter essay, Kesha wrote that “Praying” is about “coming to feel empathy for someone else even if they hurt you.” (AP) Variety: Kanye West threatens to end Tidal exclusivity deal over owed money
FILM REVIEW The German historical drama “13 Minutes” opens with the sound of human grunting and the ticktock of a mechanical timer. It’s Nov. 8, 1939, several hours before an explosive device, planted by Georg Elser, is set to go off, almost killing Adolf Hitler, who, as history tells us, had left the building in which the bomb was planted minutes earlier. After Elser (Christian Friedel) has been arrested while trying to slip across the Swiss border, the film flashes back to 1932, when we are introduced to him several years before he has become radicalized. The film burrows more deeply inside his psyche than even the curious might have wanted to know, tracing his love life, his family background and his gradual conversion from an apolitical musician and carpenter to a monomaniacal would-be assassin who came within minutes of changing the world. Friedel’s performance is top-notch, especially when the film flashes forward again to scenes of his post-arrest interrogation and torture, which are hard to watch, but in which the previously soft and sensual Georg shows himself to be a surprisingly tough kuchen. By the end, the movie seems less a white-knuckle drama of the nuts and bolts of a failed political assassination than a psychological portrait of resistance that turns out to be both timely and creepily unsettling. “We should Photoshop me over his yearbook picture next. #DontMessWithGabi.” @VANCITYREYNOLDS, the Twitter account of actor Ryan Reynolds, lending his leading-man support to teen Gabi Dunn, who Photoshopped the actor in place of her boyfriend in her prom photos. Dunn shared the pictures with the caption: “My boyfriend and I broke up a few days after prom, so I decided to ‘edit’ the photos a little.” It’s obvious whose side Reynolds chose. Other Twitter users jumped in to support Dunn, re-editing the photo so that she could have a more realistic version to keep.
