Redskins expand the menu Offerings at FedEx Field will include craft beer, chicken and waffles

REDSKINS As part of their ongoing effort to improve the game-day experience at FedEx Field based on fan feedback, the Washington Redskins will introduce several new food and craft beer options at the stadium for a second consecutive season. On Wednesday, the team hosted a tasting of the expanded concessions menu for members of the media and several hundred season-ticket holders who participated in a fan forum in April. Among the new food items sampled: red velvet chicken and waffles (a nod to the Redskins’ burgundy and gold color scheme), a bacon cheddar sausage on a mac ‘n’ cheese waffle, a pulled chicken sandwich topped with jerk barbecue sauce, loaded mac ‘n’ cheese bowls, three different hot soups, a buffalo chicken sausage and General Tso’s chicken served over white rice. “People wanted more variety,” Chris Bloyer, the Redskins senior vice president of operations and guest experience, said of the fan

feedback that helped guide the changes to the FedEx Field menu. “They said, ‘There are too many places to get the same thing, so give us more variety.’ ” “I want more than Johnny Rockets,” said longtime seasonticket holder Rob Lee while sampling the new fare. Lee, who noted that the new parking plan the Redskins unveiled last season in response to similar fan feedback “made a real difference,” enjoyed most of the food he sampled Wednesday.

So, The Washington Post crowdsourced a partial map of PokéStops and Gyms in the D.C. region, which you can find online at washingtonpost.com. “It could be absolutely delicious, but if they’re charging $17.50, I could do without soup.”

Fans and media members voted on four flavors of hot dogs from Hagerstown, Md.-based Hoffman’s Meats to decide the Redskins’ signature hog dog, which will be available on all three levels. The winning entry, announced toward the end of the event, includes bacon, ham, sausage and pulled pork. The soup cart, located in Sections 130 and 301, will open when the weather gets cold and offer Maryland crab, chicken noodle and garden vegetable varieties. Healthier fare — including a kale salad, a gluten free veggie wrap and a variety of snack packs and fruit cups — will be available at the Caesar’s Vineyard stand in Sections 123 and 340. Elysian’s Space Dust IPA, Devil’s Backbone’s Vienna Lager, Flying Dog’s The Truth Imperial IPA, Bell’s Two Hearted Ale and Escutcheon Brewing Co.’s John Riggins’ 4th & 1 Pilsner were among the beers available Wednesday. “We’re trying to get some more local crafts, trying to get some variety and make it interesting,” Bloyer said “There will be noticeably more craft beer on all three levels.” SCOTT ALLEN

Report: Metrobus lags in safety and security TRANSPORTATION Metrobus riders are at a greater risk of injury or of being in a collision than commuters on other major bus systems in the U.S., according to data presented to the Metro board Thursday. Collisions, security incidents and injuries reported in the nation’s sixth-largest bus system outnumber those in New York City, Boston and Chicago, according the data. With 23.9 injuries and fatalities per every 10 billion passenger trips, Metrobus has nearly four times as many such incidents

than the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York and twice as many as those reported in the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which covers the Boston area, according to the report. Of the nine major transit systems compared in the report, only New Jersey Transit and the Southern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority had a higher rate of injuries and fatalities. Metrobus also has one of the highest rates for collisions and the highest rate of security incidents (crime) among its peers.

Man accused of taking upskirt photos at station

The report, which is based on data from the National Transit Database, paints a troubling picture of Metrobus’s safety and security record at a time when overall public confidence in the region’s transit system is at its lowest. Recent incidents include a bizarre hijacking of a U6 bus in Northeast in May that resulted in the death of a pedestrian and an attack on the bus operator; and the arrest of man who allegedly assaulted passengers on a No. 70 bus in Silver Spring, and tried to kick open the bus door. Maryland and Virginia residents seem to hate their jobs even more than most people — or at least they complain more about their jobs on Twitter. Online job site Monster. com and Brandwatch sifted through 2 million job-related tweets from the past year to determine how people talk about their jobs. It looked through English-language Twitter data, with 26 percent of the tweets coming from outside the U.S. The unhappiest workers based on their tweets? People living in Michigan, followed by Virginia. Maryland had the fifth-most unhappy workers. Still, the report said, people in these “unhappy” states wrote more positive tweets about their jobs than negative ones. Closing arguments heard in Gray case Highest-ranking officer to stand trial is due to hear verdict Monday BALTIMORE The trial for the highest-ranking officer charged in the death of a 25-year-old black man who was fatally injured in the back of a police van may hinge on a simple question: Should the officer have put a seat belt on Freddie Gray? Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams, who will decide the case of Lt. Brian Rice, focused on that question during closing arguments Thursday, asking prosecutors if they believed it was a crime not to put a seat belt on Gray. “So, failure to restrain equals criminal act?” the judge asked. Michael Schatzow, chief deputy state’s attorney, replied that it was, because to leave Gray face down on the floor of the van in handcuffs and leg shackles amounted to Rice not taking reasonable action to ensure his safety. “He should have restrained him,” Schatzow said. Prosecutors said that, of the six officers charged, Rice, who is white, was most responsible for ensuring that police procedures on fastening a prisoner in a seat belt were followed, citing his 18 years of experience on the force. Rice is charged with manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct. Gray died

Lt. Brian Rice arrives at court in Baltimore last week. Rice is the highestranking officer to stand trial in the 2015 death of Freddie Gray.

April 19, 2015, a week after he suffered a spinal injury sometime during the van ride. His death prompted riots last year in Baltimore. Rice is the fourth officer to be tried. Two officers have been acquitted and a trial for the third ended in a hung jury. The judge said he will announce his verdict Monday. In arguing the government’s case, prosecutors cited a 2015 email sent by the police commissioner instructing officers to use seat belts when transporting prisoners. “Clearly Mr. Rice was on notice that he was to seat belt a prisoner,” prosecutor Janice Bledsoe said. Michael Belsky, Rice’s attorney, said officers may use discretion if they believe their

safety is at risk. He said officers had concerns because Gray was not cooperative, and they weren’t sure what onlookers would do if extra time was taken to fasten Gray in the van. “What he did was professional,” Belsky said, adding that “this was not a scene where people are happy or cooperative.” Prosecutors and defense attorneys gave different characterizations of the onlookers. Prosecutors described them as concerned observers, while Belsky said officers heard threatening comments during the arrest. Bledsoe told the judge that Rice did not make his decisions because he was in danger but because he had the power “to punish and humiliate Freddie Gray.” BRIAN WITTE (AP)

Truck hits French crowd, killing dozens of revelers Attack targets people who were watching Bastille Day fireworks

VALERY HACHE (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

NICE, FRANCE An explosives-laden truck rammed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the French Riviera city of Nice on Thursday night, killing at least 70 people in what officials say was a deliberate attack, local media and officials said. The truck struck the crowd on the Promenade des Anglais, a seaside walk in the center of the southern French city, according to Nice Matin, a regional newspaper. About 100 people were reported injured. Local authorities were treating the incident as an attack and urging people to stay home, the French television channel BFM TV reported. It occurred as a large crowd was watching a fireworks display celebrating the French national holiday. Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, put the death toll at 73 people, adding in a tweet that the truck was loaded with arms and grenades. This story was still developing at Express’ deadline. CNN quoted an American witness as saying he saw one person in the large white truck and heard gunfire, although it was not clear whether it came from the driver or was being fired at the vehicle.

Police release body-cam video of fatal shooting

People react in Nice on Thursday after a van drove into a crowd watching a fireworks display. At least 70 died.

The witness said the driver accelerated as he mowed people down. The Associated Press quoted Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native, as saying that after slamming the crowd, the truck driver emerged with a gun and started shooting. “There was carnage on the road,” Bouhlel said. “Bodies everywhere.” The Interior Ministry in Nice said about 100 people were injured and that the truck’s driver was shot by police. News footage from the scene of the incident showed the truck’s windshield riddled with bullet holes.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bloodshed, although jihadist networks, including the Islamic State, were celebrating it on social media. France was rocked by a devastating terrorist attack in November, when heavily armed suicide bombers killed 130 people in several places in Paris. ISIS claimed responsibility for that attack, the worst bloodshed on French soil since World War II. In March, ISIS attackers killed 32 people in suicide bombings at the Brussels airport and a metro station. Witnesses said bodies of

victims were strewn over the road for more than a mile. Police urged people not to spread rumors or broadcast shocking videos of the scene. Despite the admonitions from French police, graphic video and photographs flooded social media. In some, bodies could be seen lying on the boulevard where the truck plowed into the crowd. Revelers ran away from the scene while sirens blared. A reporter for Agence FrancePresse called it “absolute chaos.” “We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around,” he said. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

RACE RELATIONS

The proportion of Americans who say race relations are generally bad, one of the highest levels of discontent since the 1992 riots that followed the acquittal of police officers charged in the beating of Rodney King in Los Angeles, a New York Times/CBS poll found. The discord is also at the highest point in President Barack Obama’s presidency. The poll was conducted after the fatal shooting of five police officers in Dallas last week, and the recent police shootings of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota. (EXPRESS) Mourners pay respects to Philando Castile, a black Minn. man shot by police, at funeral

FRESNO, CALIF. Despite demands that he “Show both hands!” and shouts of “You’re going to get shot, man!” 19-year-old Dylan Noble in Fresno, Calif., refused to pull one hand from behind his back and to stop walking toward police. Officers then shot him four times on June 25, killing him. Dramatic and graphic bodycamera video released by police Wednesday reveals that Noble was struck twice more after he already had gone down from the first two bullets, just after yelling that he hated his life. It turned out that Noble, who was white, was unarmed and had only a small, empty plastic container in his hand, police Chief Jerry Dyer said. Officers, who had been looking for a man with a gun when they pulled him over, had no way of knowing that, given his refusal to cooperate, Dyer said. Dyer acknowledged that the video is gruesome, but he said it was important for the public to see. Former London mayor Boris Johnson was named Britain’s foreign secretary Wednesday.

U.S. heat wave brewing A huge, hot area of high pressure is forecast to develop over the central U.S. next week, which may result in the nation’s most significant heat wave of the summer. The Upper Midwest could see temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above average. Des Moines, Iowa, for example, could hit 100 degrees three days in a row. Temperatures in Washington could be in the mid90s. Johnson, isn’t known for diplomacy. His French counterpart said Thursday he “lied a lot” during the Brexit campaign, and he has a history of inflammatory statements. Here’s a sampling. (EXPRESS)

On Turkey’s president

On Hillary Clinton

Just two months ago, a poem Johnson concocted about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan having sexual congress with a goat won the first-place prize in a contest sponsored by Spectator magazine. “There was a young fellow from Ankara, Who was a terrific wankerer,” the limerick begins. “Till he sowed his wild oats, With the help of a goat, But he didn’t even stop to thankera.”

In 2007 Johnson wrote a column in The Telegraph describing how he daydreamed about Hillary Clinton becoming president of the U.S.: “I hum and I brood and then to my amazement a face seems to form in my mind’s eye. She’s got dyed blonde hair and pouty lips, and a steely blue stare, like a sadistic nurse in a mental hospital; and as I snap out of my trance I slap my forehead in astonishment.”

On Barack Obama

On Tony Blair

This spring, Johnson wrote a column in The Sun about a bust of British icon Winston Churchill supposedly being removed from the White House, using the tale to take a swipe at President Barack Obama: “Some said it was a snub to Britain. Some said it was a symbol of the part-Kenyan President’s ancestral dislike of the British empire — of which Churchill had been such a fervent defender.”

In 2004, when Johnson was a member of Parliament, he took aim at Tony Blair, then Britain’s prime minister. Johnson said: “It is just flipping unbelievable. He is a mixture of Harry Houdini and a greased piglet. He is barely human in his elusiveness. Nailing Blair is like trying to pin jelly to a wall.” More recently, in 2014, Johnson wrote that Blair’s oratorical style was reminiscent of Adolf Hitler’s.

Trump delays VP pick Indiana Gov. Mike Pence emerges as late favorite to be his running mate

Amid VP talk, Kaine joins Clinton on trail TASOS KATOPODIS (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS After a day of rampant speculation, Donald Trump on Thursday night abruptly postponed plans to announce his vice presidential pick, citing the “horrible attack” in Nice, France, that left scores dead. Trump had planned to hold his first event with his yet-tobe-announced running mate Friday morning in New York. He announced the change of plans on Twitter. The delay raised questions about the status of Trump’s selection process. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence had emerged as a late favorite for the job, although Trump advisers cautioned that the businessman had not made a final decision and could still change his mind. After spending much of Thursday in Indianapolis, Pence flew to New York late in the day, according to a Republican familiar with the process. Indianapolis television station WTHR posted a video showing Pence arriving at a private airport in New Jersey early Thursday evening. Trump did not announce a new schedule to announce his running mate. He’s up against a clock: The Republican convention kicks off Monday in Cleveland. Campaign chair Paul Manafort was among those urging caution Thursday in assuming any decision, saying on Twitter that Trump’s choice “will be made in the near future.” In addition to Pence, Trump’s shortlist included former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to people familiar with the candidate’s

thinking. In tapping Pence, a staunch conservative with six terms in Congress, Trump would likely ease Republican leaders’ concerns about his own political inexperience and volatile temperament. Pence has influential allies in Trump’s inner circle. But some of Trump’s children, who have been closely advising their father, are said to favor different candidates. Pence is running for re-election, but Indiana law prevents him from seeking two offices at once. He faces a Friday deadline to withdraw from the governor’s race. The paperwork has been drawn up for him to take that step, according to a Republican, who insisted on anonymity because that person was not authorized to publicly discuss the plans. However, those documents have not been filed. Each of Trump’s top contenders would add significant political experience to the GOP ticket. Trump has said for weeks

Trump needs some message discipline. Trump is one of the least on-message politicians in modern history. Pence is his exact opposite: relentlessly on message at all times, to the point of boredom/frustration.

that he wanted a running mate who could help him work with Congress. Pence, 57, has deep ties to evangelical Christians and other conservatives, particularly after signing a law last year that critics said would have allowed businesses to deny service to gay people for religious reasons. But the move alienated some moderates in the party. Trump took notice of Pence during the Indiana primary, noting that the governor had high praise for him despite endorsing one of his rivals. Gingrich is something of a rabble-rouser who has spent decades in Washington. The 73-year-old would be the oldest candidate ever to become vice president. Gingrich has been a steadfast Trump defender for months and has become a trusted adviser to the businessman. So, too, has Christie, 53. He quickly endorsed Trump after ending his own presidential bid, stunning many of his supporters.

CHRIS CILLIZZA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Why Pence makes sense Trump needs to reassure the GOP establishment. Pence is someone who spent time in the House GOP leadership before returning to Indiana to run for governor in 2012. He was seen as a possible future House speaker. Trump needs to reassure social conservatives. In Pence, Trump would be getting someone who is widely regarded as a front-line fighter for social conservatives; Pence often describes himself as a “Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order.” Trump needs the industrial Midwest. If you look at an electoral map of the country, it’s very clear Trump can’t win unless he makes the Midwest competitive. Putting a favorite son of that region on the ticket should help.

POLITICS Hillary Clinton campaigned alongside Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine on Thursday afternoon, making a high-profile appearance with one of the leading contenders for a spot alongside her on the presidential ticket. Kaine, a popular lawmaker from an important general election battleground state, is considered to be a safe pick, one that could help Clinton woo moderates turned off by Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric. An early Clinton backer, Kaine tested out attack lines against Trump before several hundred gathered at a community college, assailing the GOP nominee as unqualified, untested and untrustworthy. Fluent in Spanish, he showed off his language skills, laughed at Clinton’s jokes and nodded energetically at her applause lines. “Do you want a ‘you’re fired’ president or a ‘you’re hired’ president?” Kaine asked. “Do you want a trash-talking president or a bridge-building president?” The appearance comes as Clinton moves into the final stages of picking her vice president, with an announcement expected as soon as next week. The shortlist includes Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a favorite of progressives who has emerged as a blistering critic of presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump; Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro of Texas, a rising star in the party; and Kaine. Magazine to Tesla: Reel in Autopilot TRANSPORTATION Consumer Reports this week called for electric automaker Tesla to disable its semiautonomous “Autopilot mode” in the wake of a May crash fatality in which Autopilot failed to alert a driver of an oncoming vehicle. “While the exact cause of the fatal accident is not yet known, the incident has caused safety advocates, including Consumer Reports, to question whether the name Autopilot, as well as the marketing hype of its roll-out, promoted a dangerously premature assumption that the Model S was capable of truly driving on its own,” the nonprofit Consumer Reports wrote in a blog post. Specifically, the influential magazine asked Tesla to disable

Autopilot’s “autosteer” system, issue new guidance to drivers about the system’s use, discontinue beta releases of semiautonomous technology and rename the Autopilot feature. “We’re deeply concerned that consumers are being sold a pile of promises about unproven technology,” Laura MacCleery, vice president of consumer policy and mobilization for Consumer Reports, said in the post. Tesla said it has no plans to change the name, and its data show drivers who use Autopilot are safer than those who don’t. Kings of the summer WHO SAYS THE REDSKINS DON’T WIN THE OFFSEASON ANYMORE? Washington kept its quarterback using the franchise

tag, found a No. 1 corner, drafted a tall receiver, prioritized the defense and even floated ideas on their new stadium a decade away. Aside from the loss of two aging defensive linemen in Terrance Knighton (signed with the Patriots) and Jason Hatcher (retired), they didn’t lose any key players from the NFC East championship team. Here are more details on the five things the team accomplished to improve itself after exiting the playoffs in January.

Avoided a QB quandary

Acquired a top cornerback

Drafted a rangy wide receiver

Retooled the defense

Made plans for a new stadium

The Redskins have until 4 p.m. Friday to sign Kirk Cousins to a long-term deal. No matter, he’s already signed for this season. Given Washington started 24 quarterbacks since its last Super Bowl run 25 years ago, the franchise is desperate for stability. Cousins wasn’t the starter until midway through the preseason last year when Robert Griffin III showed it was time to move on. Can Cousins better his team-record 4,166 passing yards or will opposing defenses that spent the offseason watching film resurrect his turnover tendency? Getting a new deal will depend on Cousins’ play.

It was a gift finding a No. 1 corner who wasn’t supposed to be available. The Redskins quickly outmaneuvered other teams to sign Josh Norman after Carolina released his franchise tag. Owner Dan Snyder sent his private plane Redskins One to pick up Norman and did not let him leave Washington without a deal. Suddenly, the team has its best corner since Champ Bailey left in 2004. With Norman and Bashaud Breeland at corner, the secondary is now strong enough to buy time for an impressive pass rush, and opposing quarterbacks will have a tougher time torching the defense.

Recent years have made fans almost nostalgic for Michael Westbrook. The 6-foot-3 wideout had 277 catches over seven years before departing in 2002 as a mediocre first-round pick. Washington has repeatedly looked for a big pass catcher without much success. Seventh-rounder Darnerien McCants (2002) caught only 58 passes while Malcolm Kelly (2008) managed only 28 receptions over two years as a second-rounder. Now Josh Doctson is up, but the first-rounder was already hampered over offseason camps by two foot injuries. Still, the 6-foot-2 rookie out of TCU could provide a big target in the red zone.

Defensive coordinator Joe Barry didn’t get enough credit last season for improving his unit. Known for leading a winless defense in Detroit (2008), Barry arrived last season to keep a group decimated by injuries competitive with free agents signed off the street. Washington was 28th in total defense but 17th in points allowed. In addition to getting Norman, the team should see what Junior Galette can add to the pass rush. Rookie Su’a Cravens (Southern Cal) can play linebacker and safety. With a balanced attack up front and behind, Barry can dial up the blitz as frequently as he likes.

Holy moat! The Redskins are starting to think beyond the IKEA-inspired FedEx Field to the day their team’s lease in Prince George’s County expires in 2027. While the site is still wildly uncertain, the team’s architect showed off renderings of a futuristic venue. They were pretty pictures that included a moat for kayaking, water skiing or ice skating below entry bridges (Can Cowboys fans swim?). That vision reminds me of a forgetful stadium in Tampa Bay Chris Berman used to call “The Big Sombrero.” At least the team is working on a new home for fans. Can you say $20 beers?

Phil’s chance for history spins out of cup at 18th Mickelson just misses becoming the first man to shoot 62 in a major BRITISH OPEN Just 16 feet from history on Thursday, Phil Mickelson’s final putt found everything but the record book. His birdie putt at Royal Troon’s No. 18 swirled the lip of the cup and spun out, leaving him just shy of becoming the first male golfer in history to shoot a 62 at a major-championship event. His 8-under-par 63 was plenty good enough for the first-round lead at the British Open, however, and he became the 28th male golfer to card that score at one

of the four Grand Slam events. Mickelson set himself up with three birdies over four holes spanning Nos. 14-17. After considering his driver at the par-4, 458-yard 18th hole, Mickelson decided on a 3-wood, but his tee shot went left into the first cut of rough, 179 feet to the hole. His second shot found the green, 16 feet from the hole, but the putt caught the lip and rolled off. “I feel like crying,” Mickelson said afterward. Asked if he believed in the golf gods, Mickelson added: “I didn’t … but I do now.” In the 1980 U.S. Open at Baltusrol, Jack Nicklaus needed to make a short birdie putt on the

par-5 18th for a first-round 62. It didn’t happen. Among the others with a 63, Tiger Woods also came close in the second round of the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills. His final putt was eerily similar to Mickelson’s. Three women have shot a 62 or better at a major, with Hyo-Joo Kim shooting a 61 at the 2014 Evian Championship and Minea Blomqvist (2004 Women’s British Open) and Lorena Ochoa (2006 Kraft Nabisco Championship) carding 62s. Mickelson led Patrick Reed and Martin Kaymer by three shots and a group of eight, which included defending champion Zach Johnson, by four.

ALSO OPENING

‘Our Little Sister’ Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones shine in “Ghostbusters.”

Ain’t afraid of no trolls The all-female ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot is funny and smart enough to silence haters

FILM REVIEW Slimy and profoundly silly, the new, lady-centric reboot of “Ghostbusters” immediately silences the backlash that’s preceded it. This jokey ensemble piece seems engineered to remind viewers of what it was meant to be all along: neither a workhorse for arguments about gender politics nor a Trojan horse for desecrating precious generational shibboleths, but simply an easygoing, enjoyable family comedy. Headed by a cast that includes Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, this iteration possesses the same casual, unforced humor that made the 1984 original a virtual instant classic. Once again set in Manhattan, “Ghostbusters” opens with a funny-scary set piece, wherein a tour guide at a posh 19th-century mansion is seen bragging about the stately home’s “face bidet” and “antiIrish security fence” one moment, and then fending off an oozing tsunami of familiar green goo the next.

Who ya gonna call? Erin Gilbert (Wiig), of course. She’s a paranormal researcher and Columbia University instructor who has since recanted her belief in ectoplasmic life, but her childhood friend and fellow researcher Abby (McCarthy) is still determined to catch and examine a real-life ghost — now with the help of her new research partner, Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon). McKinnon, it bears noting, delivers a star-making turn in “Ghostbusters,” her eccentric gearhead stealing every scene, much in the way Bill Murray made the most of his moments in the earlier film. McKinnon’s Holtzmann is the straw that stirs the drink throughout “Ghostbusters,” her performance one that easily could have been an exercise in phoned-in snark, but instead proves to be an example of genuinely smart and confoundingly funny characterization. Indeed, Wiig and McCarthy mostly act as deadpan comic foils

‘Ghostbusters’ (PG, 116 min.)

DIRECTOR: Paul Feig STARS: Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy IN A NUTSHELL: Three paranormal researchers and an MTA worker with a knack for Manhattan history fight ghosts in New York City.

to McKinnon’s inspired lunacy, which, like everything else about “Ghostbusters,” possesses the quiet, good-natured rhythms of a comedy that largely resists hysterical overreach. When Leslie Jones — as a freaked-out MTA worker and aficionado of early Manhattan history — joins the team, she brings along her own expertly delivered one-liners. Chris Hemsworth, as the Ghostbusters’ studly receptionist, gives Channing Tatum a run for his money in a cleverly revisionist take on cinema’s so-called dumb blondes. “Who ordered the Clark Kent stripper-gram?” someone asks.

Biopic of mob boss John Gotti starring John Travolta to begin filming this month

Director Paul Feig and his cowriter, Katie Dippold, create a mood that’s more playful than polemical in a movie that leaves poisonous culture wars behind for a brighter, goofier world. “Ghostbusters” reaches a fatal turning point in the third act, when it descends into an engulfing chaos of CGI effects, blue and green smoke and drawnout, repetitive mayhem for its own sake. Of a piece with the bigger-longer-louder endings that most action movies revert to these days, the endgame of “Ghostbusters” feels utterly at odds with the rest of the movie’s refreshingly low-key tone. But that vibe returns during the film’s fun finale and end-credits crawl, as well as in a final-final stinger that die-hard fans won’t want to miss. For all the high dudgeon with which the movie has been anticipated, it turns out that “Ghostbusters” — like the girls who cheerfully dominate it this time around — just wants to have fun. And it does. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Director Hirokazu Kore-eda takes on weighty familial themes in this beautifully filmed Japanese-language drama, which glides gently through the ups and downs of its characters’ lives. The film centers on three 20-something sisters who have been on their own for many years. At their father’s funeral, they meet their half sister Suzu (Suzu Hirose), with whom they form a fast bond. ‘You’ve Been Trumped’ NR, 95 min.

Originally released in 2012, this rough-around-theedges documentary takes a lively look at the way Donald Trump treated several neighbors of the golf resort that he opened in rural northeast Scotland that year. In D.C., the film is likely to find an audience that already shares its jaundiced view of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

Have some coke, and smile A customs agent goes deep inside ’80s drug cartels in ‘The Infiltrator’

‘Thrones’ again rules Emmy nominations

FUJI TELEVISION NETWORK INC

FILM REVIEW In the 1980s, customs agent Robert Mazur posed as a money launderer with mob ties to get inside the Colombian drug cartels that were then bringing 15 tons of cocaine into the United States every week. As laid out in Mazur’s 2009 memoir “The Infiltrator,” the story of that dangerous, years-long mission was practically gift-wrapped for the big screen. Now, filmmaker Brad Furman (“The Lincoln Lawyer”) has taken a stab at telling it, with Bryan Cranston in the title role. As the movie begins, Cranston’s Mazur has yet to go undercover as a mobbed-up businessman. When we meet him, he’s playing a sleazy drug dealer. Just as he’s about to make a big bust, something goes awry: The wire he’s wearing burns a hole in his chest. While Mazur still gets his guy, he also receives an offer from his bosses. With a wound like that, he can retire immediately, with full benefits. His wife, Evelyn (Juliet Aubrey), would love that, especially with two young children, and Mazur not being around much. Instead, he takes on a bigger, even riskier assignment. With the help of his wisecracking new partner, Emir (John Leguizamo, wonderful as ever), Mazur — now posing as entrepreneur Bob Musella — starts making friends with corrupt bankers, mid-level

Robert Mazur (Bryan Cranston) uses a mystifying, ancient device.

‘The Infiltrator’ (R, 127 min.)

DIRECTOR: Brad Furman STARS: Bryan Cranston, John Leguizamo, Diane Kruger IN A NUTSHELL: Customs agent

Robert Mazur, on whose memoir the film is based, goes undercover inside Colombian drug cartels.

drug dealers and even members of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin drug cartel. The movie aces the look and feel of the 1980s. Cranston, meanwhile, is typically magnetic in the lead role. Yet something’s missing. Although the film is tense, it’s not the

white-knuckle experience you might expect, with the most suspenseful scenes coming across as manufactured. There are enough scenes that don’t ring true to distract from the ones that do. Mazur and an agent posing as his fiancee, Kathy (Diane Kruger), have zero chemistry, yet the danger of their mission is supposedly drawing them together in worrisome ways. One of Escobar’s underlings, Roberto (Benjamin Bratt), has just been doublecrossed, yet he wastes no time treating Bob and Kathy like family. If the movie isn’t always gripping, it’s nevertheless a worthwhile examination of the

intricacies of undercover life. Mazur is no Jason Bourne — just a normal guy who wears shortsleeved dress shirts and plays Clue with his family for fun. He might succeed, if he doesn’t have a heart attack first. He and Kathy start to feel affection for the criminals they’ve cozied up to. The two feel especially guilty about using Roberto — a dangerous criminal, but someone who also knows how to throw a stellar dinner party. The movie’s most interesting takeaway is one it never fully investigates: Going undercover is risky business, but you also might make some great friends along the way. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Utter debasement: ‘Ghostbusters’ and the Virgin Loser “Ghostbusters” is pretty funny and anyone who says otherwise is a virgin loser who lives in his mom’s basement. That’s hyperbole, of course (except for the part about “Ghostbusters” being pretty funny; it is), but it seems like the knee-jerk response to the knee-jerk misogyny that’s surrounded the female-led reboot. For every “keep those unfunny women away from my precious childhood memories” found in a comments section comes a “you won’t like the movie because you can’t get laid.” The blatant sexism that has been so prevalent since this “Ghostbusters” was announced is sickening, but suggesting that a guy’s lack of sexual prowess is to blame is problematic too. OK, some guys have decided that, for whatever reason, this “Ghostbusters” is not for them.

That’s fine; I don’t see every mostly male movie (and I have QUITE a variety to choose from) and that doesn’t make me a misandrist. However, some men (not all men, of course) view the original film as holy writ and don’t want anyone with a uterus anywhere near it. These guys are bad guys, and we — by which I mean women and guys who are not bad guys — should call them out on their badness. What we shouldn’t do is use that image of Comic Book Guy from “The Simpsons” as a way of dismissing their misogyny — even if they ARE virgin losers who live in their moms’ basements. First, explaining away a guy’s sexist behavior with “well, that’s because he never gets laid” feeds into the absurd social constructs we’ve built around sex. It suggests that if the guy could just have sex, he would be more likely to enjoy “Ghostbusters,” or at least give

it a chance. Sex doesn’t transform a jerk into a nice person. Most of the time it transforms a jerk into a jerk who’s had sex. This Virgin Loser image of a guy wiping his pizzasmeared hands on a faded, Mountain Dew-stained T-shirt after gleefully downvoting the “Ghostbusters” trailer allows actual men (I KNOW. NOT ALL MEN) to pretend they have nothing in common with that guy. By creating the Virgin Loser image, we’ve set the bar for conquering misogyny pretty low: Have you had sex? Do you live outside of your mom’s basement? If you answered “yes” to both questions, congratulations! You can go ahead and moan about how “Ghostbusters” is ruining your childhood and not have to really consider why you’d say that. Online commenters have made the Virgin Loser the face of misogyny. In fact, though, he’s a diversion. Not for women (we know sexism comes in many forms) but for men who would deny any sexism, conscious or unconscious, that gets pointed out to them. The Virgin Loser isn’t the problem; the problem is the men who think that not being him is being good enough. Read Kristen’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/thereelist

‘La La Land’

‘The Hollars’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Dec. 2

EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 26

SUMMARY: The trailer is short on plot, but that’s OK, because Ryan Gosling sings in it. He and Emma Stone are in love and the whole thing looks very lovely. The movie is from “Whiplash” writer-director Damien Chazelle, so everyone will probably be psychologically destroyed by the end. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: John Krasinski directs and stars in this comedy about a family that is probably just as screwed up as yours, but theirs is way better looking. When the matriarch (Margo Martindale) is hospitalized, all sorts of buried family stuff comes up in zany ways, whereas in real life there would be resentment and secret whiskey. K.P.K.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Your interest in something new and different can lead you down an exciting path very soon, but today may be a little premature. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You can share what you’re into with those who seem to have similar interests. This can lead to a deepening of certain relationships. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’ll have the chance to impress those around you with the extent of your skill — and you may change some people’s opinions of you. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You needn’t spring into action first thing; in fact, it would probably be best to spend more time than usual plotting things out.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) What

others do in their spare time needn’t concern you, but you must at least be sure that everyone is on task professionally.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may have to suffer through several interruptions, but that shouldn’t keep you from getting done what you must get done. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may have to go through the trouble of relearning something that you thought you already knew. This will be good for you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may be locked in conflict with someone who isn’t ready to relinquish control over a project that is now under your jurisdiction.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’re

ready to jump in, but someone close to you may be trying to hold you back. Perhaps it’s time for you both to take the leap. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) A good friend displays behavior that may have you second-guessing yourself and your situation. Are you losing confidence?

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Britain’s Prince Harry took an HIV test Thursday, and broadcast the event live on Facebook. It’s part of his campaign to raise awareness about the virus, a cause championed by his late mother, Princess Diana. “Even being the person I am and knowing the type of people I’m around, I’m still nervous,” he admitted before the test. The results of the simple finger-prick test were negative. “Weirdly, that didn’t even hurt,” he reported. “If you’re a man, woman, gay, straight, black, white, whatever — even ginger — why wouldn’t you come and have a test?” he added.
