Debt Stalemate’s Dire Reactions Poll: American’s view on budget leadership increasingly negative

EXWcW FhW_i[i É=Wd] e\ I_nÊ President Obama and a startling number of Republican senators lauded a bipartisan deficit-reduction plan Tuesday that includes $1 trillion in higher taxes, raising hopes of a last-minute compromise to repair the nation’s finances while averting a government default. Wall Street saluted, too. Obama said he hoped congressional leaders would “start talking turkey” as soon as Wednesday along the lines of the Senate “Gang of Six” proposal, which quickly overshadowed a no-tax-increase alternative that conservatives spent Tuesday pushing toward an evening vote in the House. MWi^_d]jed With President Obama and congressional Republicans at an impasse in budget negotiations, majorities of Americans see both sides as not being willing enough to compromise to get a deal done, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News Poll. The public’s view of the GOP leadership’s posture in the talks is particularly negative, and there is growing dissatisfaction among rank-and-file Republicans with the hard-line stance of their congressional representatives. Although some Republican lawmakers have cast doubt on the seriousness of the Aug. 2 deadline, majorities across party lines in the poll predict dire economic consequences if the two sides fail to extend the government’s borrowing power and a default results. in the 2010 Republican gubernatorial primary. Texas conservatives recently shared material on Perry’s record with the New Hampshire Tea Party Coalition. The coalition offers links to negative media coverage and videos about the man who it says “was Al Gore’s Democrat chairman” in 1988. Perry switched to the Republican Party in 1989, around the same time as other conservative Democrats. The attacks are quietly promot-

ed by other Republican presidential contenders, who view Perry as a growing threat as he inches closer to a late entrance into the Republican presidential primary. A key Perry strategist dismissed the tea party criticism as isolated to a handful of conservative groups in a fragmented movement. “There’s no candidate running ... that has his record and relationship with tea party members,” said David Carney. “But the tea party is not one monolithic group.” (AP)

The 17-year-old made his first court appearance Tuesday after being charged in the killing of his parents, Blake and Mary-Jo Hadley, who authorities say he bludgeoned with a hammer Saturday before hosting a party for about 60 friends. A motive remains unclear. In his brief appearance via video conference from jail, the teen calmly replied, “No, sir,” when

Pakistan: 1st Female Named Foreign Minister

A focal point of Egypt’s revolution continues to be Cairo’s Tahrir Square, where protesters at a sit-in call for reforms and scrawled graffiti maintains the movement’s solidarity.

Egypt’s Military Looks to Dig In As interim leaders seek a lasting role, fears of abuse rise 9W_he Egypt’s ruling generals are seeking to enshrine a future role for themselves with considerable independence from civilian leaders and possibly an authority to intervene in politics, a push that appears to be driven by the military’s fear of losing the near-autonomous power it has enjoyed for nearly 60 years.

“Any political role for the military will hurt democracy,” said Mustafa el-Naggar, an activist. “The only guarantor of democracy should be the people.” Last week, the generals who have led Egypt since Hosni Mubarak’s Feb. 11 fall announced plans to create guidelines for a new constitution that is to be written after elections planned for this year. But it raised concerns due to the military’s control over the process, combined with signals by some generals that they want an untouchable role for the military.

8WYaijeho A council of Egypt’s generals took power after Hosni Mubarak’s fall on Feb. 11, though they had lost much of the legitimacy they long had to justify their behind-thescenes domination of the country. The military has been the most powerful institution in Egypt since army officers toppled the monarchy in a 1952 coup, giving the country its four presidents since, and wielding significant influence and economic power. (AP)

One legal expert and candidate for president, Hisham Bastawisi, has proposed the military have the role of “guaranteeing supra-constitutional principles.” That appears to mean powers to intervene to protect basic democratic rights. Lately, the ruling generals have come under heavy criticism by the protesters. “Down with the junta,” banners say at Tahrir Square, birthplace of the uprising and home to a nearly two-week-old sit-in to press the generals to speed up reforms. “The junta is not different from Mubarak,” says another. The progress achieves the Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s initial goals to bring the plant under control, according to the report released by the government and TEPCO. “The accident has not been resolved, but we have been making progress steadily,” trade and industry minister Banri Kaieda

A debate in Montgomery highlights the balancing act that officials face in both counties. Landuse planners are seeking to focus

growth and rejuvenate older suburbs near 20 potential Purple Line stations, but some residents are concerned that too much redevelopment would swamp their roads and schools and drastically alter the character of their communities. Developers argue that a certain level of density is needed to make projects profitable. Although county officials have broad visions for what they would like to see at the stops, in most cases there are few specifics. Discussing what to construct around Purple Line stations is a long way from building the light rail line. The Purple Line, which is esti-

Residents, officials and developers in both counties will continue to debate what level of development along the rail line will enhance their communities while providing enough financial incentives for developers. But most parties seem to agree that the prospect of a light rail line provides an opportunity to rethink how people live, work and commute. “It allows us to think through where we want community investment,” said Montgomery County Council member George L. DIDN’T SAVE ENOUGH? According to The Post, Vincent Gray’s mayoral campaign accepted illegal donations.

D.C. To Probe Gray Campaign Funds Post report indicates staff accepted cash donations above limit MWi^_d]jed The District of Columbia Office of Campaign Finance is investigating allegations that Mayor Vincent Gray’s campaign illegally converted cash contributions into money orders. The District has a $25 limit on cash donations. The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Gray’s campaign staffers converted an untold number of cash donations of more than $25 into money orders. The Post cited campaign finance records and interviews with donors. Money-order donations totaled more than $56,000 — primarily from the city’s taxi industry — and are part of the $2.7 million war chest the Gray campaign amassed in last

year’s defeat of incumbent Adrian M. Fenty, who spent nearly $5 million on his re-election bid. The campaign finance office began a full audit of Gray’s campaign committee in April amid allegations that the campaign gave cash to a minor candidate so he could stay in the race and bash then-Mayor Adrian Fenty. A spokesman for the office says the auditors will examine the money-order allegations. Gray said in a statement that the report of discrepancies “raises serious questions,” but he said he is staying focused on his job as mayor. Gray described a grassroots campaign that had to be put in place during a small window of time, forcing him to entrust campaign duties to others. “But, obviously, if mistakes were made, the campaign should be held responsible,” he said in the statement.

A Day of Reckoning Facing a grilling from lawmakers, Murdoch defends his reputation

AP

Calling it “the most humble day” of his life, Rupert Murdoch and his son James Murdoch confronted angry lawmakers on Tuesday, insisting they did not know the scope of phone hacking at their News of the World tabloid and apologizing for being the source of one of the worst crises in the history of British media. On a day of reckoning for News Corp. in Britain, Murdoch, a baron of the conservative press whose media empire runs from Fox News to the saucy old tabloids of Fleet Street, put himself forward to face a nation’s fury. Repeatedly pounding his hand on a table at the select committee hearing as he gave testimony, Murdoch nevertheless appeared removed from dayto-day details of the scandal and unprepared for the almost forensic lines of questioning. The drama in the parliamentary chamber, already at a peak, took a surreal turn when a man yelled “greedy” while tossing a plate of shaving foam at the 80-year old Murdoch, prompting his wife, Wendi Deng, to leap out of her chair and belt the attacker. The melee forced a temporary suspension of a session, watched by millions on both sides of the Atlantic. Marking the first time the Australian-born Murdoch has addressed such a forum, he often turned to his 38-year-old son, who oversees the company’s British operations, to field them for him. But he was pressed at times to answer himself — occasionally offering the blunt remarks of a hardboiled newsman. More than his son James, who

After more than two hours of testimony, a man in a plaid shirt appeared to run toward Rupert Murdoch with a pie plate full of foam, before being struck by the executive’s wife, Wendi Deng. The foam hit Murdoch’s suit jacket. Media reports identified the man as comedian Jonnie Marbles. Just before the attack, he tweeted: “It is a far better thing that I do now than I have ever done before @splat,” an altered quotation from Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities.” (AP)

often appeared to shield himself behind legalese, the elder Murdoch conceded major mistakes had been made by News Corp. in the handling of the scandal — in which News of the World hacked the phones of thousands of British citizens, including members of the royal family, over the past decade. “There were people in the com-

pany which were apparently guilty and we have to find them and we have to deal with them,” Murdoch conceded at one point. Throughout the proceedings, Murdoch, noting that News of the World was “one percent of our company,” insisted he was not informed about key developments in the scandal. He said, for instance, he did not

know about legal settlements with phone hacking victims in excess of $1 million and dating back to as early as 2008 — settlements that British lawmakers suggested were made to keep a lid on the scandal. He also said he was unaware that in 2009, the same select committee he was appearing before had accused British executives at News

Corp. of having “collective amnesia” about alleged widespread use of phone hacking at the tabloid. Nevertheless, both father and son mounted a rigorous defense of the company’s response to wrongdoing and mismanagement at News International, News Corp.’s British operations. He said the company moved as fast as it could as details came to light.

Murdoch said, for instance, that he decided to close the 168-yearold News of the World after revelations the tabloid had interfered in the investigation of Milly Dowler, a young girl abducted and killed in 2003 by hacking into her phone. In particular, Murdoch backed two longtime top News Corp. executives who have resigned in light of the scandal, Rebekah Brooks and Les Hinton. Brooks – the former editor of News of the World and chief executive of News Corp.’s British operations until last Friday — also testified Tuesday, repeating her position that she was unaware of illicit newsgathering at the organization. The 80-year-old chief executive officer of New York-based News Corp. has apologized for the phone hacking scandal but is facing harsh criticism after decades of commercial success with his tabloids.

The 38-year-old son and heir apparent has been chairman and CEO of News Corp.’s European and Asian operations since 2007, and he later became deputy chief operating officer of the company.

The 43-year-old former head of Murdoch’s British newspapers was arrested after resigning on Friday. She dined with British Prime Minister David Cameron over Christmas, reflecting her power and connections.

The 57-year-old resigned Sunday as London police chief amid questions about his links to Neil Wallis, an arrested former executive from the News of the World who police had employed as a media consultant.

The 52-year-old was seen as a reliable investigator who handed Britain’s most sensitive cases before resigning Monday as Scotland Yard’s No. 2 amid questions about his judgment in the scandal.

Fhe]h[ii H[fehj Stephen Strasburg reached another significant milestone in his rehab from Tommy John surgery Monday, throwing a simulated game in Viera, Fla. Nationals GM Rizzo described Strasburg as currently in “mid-spring training mode,” which means Strasburg’s reconstructed right elbow has achieved the stamina of a pitcher almost ready to make his first two-inning start of spring training. It’s like Strasburg has progressed to, say, Feb. 27 of his personal season. (T WP)

9ecc[djWho I see Stephen Strasburg pitched a simulated game Monday and is on target to maybe, just maybe, throw a non-simulated game for the Washington Nationals in September. A few years ago, I would have thrown in a joke about all the Nats’ games being 8o JhWY[[ simulated, but no >Wc_bjed more. The Nats have reached respectability. My disdain for predictions aside, I forecast a finish of a few games over .500, and they might reach that — with or without Strasburg. Not long ago, I’d have argued to give Strasburg the Garbo treatment until spring training 2012 —

in other words, leave him alone. But I’ve changed my mind. If his recovery continues, if he has no twinges or tingles or tweaks, then go ahead and get him out there. This has nothing to do with the Nats’ possibly being in contention — let’s be realistic — or even making it to .500. The club’s decision should have nothing to do with the standings and everything to do with Strasburg’s development and making the most of his opportunities before the season ends. If Strasburg doesn’t pitch in September, come spring, he’ll have gone nearly a year and a half without throwing against major league hitting. That’s too long. That’s Chien-Ming Wang long. During a media scrum with Mike Rizzo early this season, someone

J[ij 9Wi[ Jordan Zimmermann, recovering from the same surgery that Stephen Strasburg underwent, was away from the majors for 13 months. When he came back last August, he pitched in seven games for a total of 31 innings — not a lot, but it was a jump-start on this season. If Strasburg pitched in September, it would be about 13 months since his last big-league game. (T WP)

mentioned that Strasburg had said he was ready to throw off the mound. The general manager answered succinctly: “He’ll throw from the mound when we think he’s ready.” Rizzo knows the difficulty with a guy such as Strasburg isn’t forcing him to go before he’s ready; it’s keeping him from going until they’re sure he’s ready. If he pitches in September, it won’t be because he says he feels great but because the club believes him when he says it. And that they see it in his mechanics and the condition of his arm the next day, and a million other things. You can be sure he’s undergoing more observation and testing than a pre-flight astronaut. (Remember astronauts?) Strasburg’s not ready for seven outings, or to go six innings, either. Two or three starts would be plenty. Limit his innings and his pitches. But if he’s ready, get him back out there — not to sell tickets, not to rush him for the club’s sake, but to let him feel the game again before he heads home for yet another winter of discontent, waiting to resume what he and the Nats still hope will be a brilliant career. — BOB H AY NIE , A SPORTS-TALK HOST ON 105.7 THE FAN, DISCUSSING THE ORIOLES.

GETTY IMAGES

On June 11, Baltimore was one out away from a win over the Tampa Bay Rays, a win that would have pushed the Orioles’ record to 31-31 and kept them within four games of the American League wild card. The 25,541 fans who rose to their feet at Oriole Park at Camden Yards at that moment, roughly 164 months since the franchise’s last playoff game, had begun to catch glimpses of an old, vaguely familiar vision in the distance: hope. But then closer Kevin Gregg blew the save, the Orioles lost in 11 innings, and the gaping hole in the earth that has swallowed the Orioles whole around this time each year, if

not earlier, opened and sent its prey into the abyss yet again. Beginning with that failed stab at .500, the Orioles have lost 24 of their past 32 games, leaving them at

38-55 and back in their familiar last place after Monday night’s seriesopening 15-10 loss at Camden Yards to the Boston Red Sox. “We still have a job to do,” third

baseman Mark Reynolds said after a recent defeat. “They’re not going to cancel the rest of the season.” And so, the competitive portion of the Orioles’ schedule has ended, and this will most likely be the franchise’s 14th-consecutive losing season. If anything has distinguished this summer swoon from those of the past, it is the fact there had been actual hope in Baltimore — whether real or imagined — engen-

The most disturbing aspect of the Orioles’ slide has been the underperformance of its young pitchers. The team entered the season with a rotation featuring four 25-and-under hurlers — Jake Arrieta, Chris Tillman, Brad Bergesen and Zach Britton — and with a fifth, Brian Matusz, waiting to come off the disabled list. More than four months later, Tillman, Matusz and Britton have all been demoted to the minors, while Bergesen has been up and down twice, and Arrieta is saddled with the third-highest ERA (5.10) and second-highest walk rate (4.49 per nine innings) in the AL. dered by the 34-23 finish to 2010 under new manager Buck Showalter, the 6-1 start to the 2011 season and the flirtation with .500 that lasted into mid-June. In hindsight, all that did was make it sting even more when the collapse came. DAVE SHEININ (THE WASHINGTON POST )

NFL Inches Toward Crucial Votes Fhe <eejXWbb With NFL owners and locked-out players preparing to vote on a deal that would end the sport’s shutdown in the coming days, representatives of both sides went back to work Tuesday to settle their remaining differences. Attorneys and staff members for the two sides gathered in New York for a meeting overseen by their courtappointed mediator, Chief Magistrate Judge Arthur J. Boylan. Several of the remaining issues pertained to the resolution of the antitrust lawsuit the players filed in March.

Once those are resolved, the players can vote to approve the deal, possibly as soon as Wednesday. The players could take a single vote to both ratify the agreement and re-form their union, which they dissolved on the same day they filed the suit. A majority of the sport’s nearly 2,000 players must approve the deal. The owners could approve the deal Thursday. The deal would have to be ratified by at least 24 of the 32 owners. NFL officials have said the lockout, which began March 12, will be lifted only when there is an official, signed collective bargaining agreement. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Da Luz Bullish on New Opportunity in D.C. Young midfielder had trouble breaking in with New York CW`eh B[W]k[ IeYY[h Austin da Luz is ready for his fresh start. Sent to D.C. United on Monday to complete a trade with the New York Red Bulls, da Luz has an opportunity to really get his career going. A first-round pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, da Luz, a left-sided midfielder, was a standout performer at Wake Forest University. A fractured bone in his left foot kept him from the field his rookie sea-

son, but he started to register on the Red Bulls’ radar this summer. With a bevy of the team’s players on international duty, he got on the field in seven games. Despite notching a goal and an assist, though, it was apparent da Luz wasn’t part of New York’s immediate plans. “It ’s a diff icult team to break into,” da Luz said. Da Luz “There’s so many t a lente d g uy s, older guys with more experience, and the attitude there is ‘Win right now.’ There’s a lot of pressure and tension around the team because

Mulberry bushes are best known in nursery rhymes. Unless you’re a stockbroker. In the past 12 months, shares of British luxury leather goods company Mulberry rose 526 percent to $34 a share, making it the bestperforming apparel retail stock in the world. The 40-year-old brand (Mulberry.com) has a very famous British woman to thank for the boost. Once again, let’s sing the praises of Duchess Cather… wait. Huh? Surely, Bloomberg 8o AWj^[h_d[ is mistaken. On Mon8eob[ day, the news service reported that television personality and socialite Alexa Chung, above, caused this astounding rise in profit. Rubbish! Isn’t Mrs. Windsor Britain’s reigning fashion queen? While Kate planned her big day, Alexa flaunted her namesake Mulberry bag around London. The Alexa, a schoolboy satchel with a messenger strap and belt-buckle detailing, carries a steep starting price of $900. Alexa’s no prim princess. She’s a tomboy who scours vintage stores and wears thrifted menswear with high-end labels to movie premieres. The “Middleton effect” may be selling dresses, but Alexa holds the purse strings. Britain now has two retail queens. Only one bolsters stocks. Comments? Give Katherine your feedback: expressnightout.com/speaker

Using the Xbox 360’s camera-based Kinect system, gamers will be able to control the on-screen graphics of “Deepak Chopra’s Leela,” shown, by moving their bodies.

Ikf[h CWh_e AWhcW Deepak Chopra aims to transform gaming with ‘Leela,’ a virtual meditation experience L_Z[e =Wc[i At the end of a long day, many gamers zone out by competing in online death matches or by escaping to virtual realms. Spiritual leader Deepak Chopra is hoping gamers will instead choose to chill out with “Leela,” his ambitious new effort to combine gaming and meditation. “I personally believe that you can accelerate neural development and biological evolution through video games,” Chopra says. “Unfortunately, that’s not what we’re doing right now. What we’re doing is cre-

ating addictions to violence, adrenaline and mindlessness, rather than mindfulness.” “Deepak Chopra’s Leela,” out Nov. 8 from THQ Inc., will use the Xbox 360 console’s controllerfree, camera-based Kinect system to detect users’ bodies, then guide them through meditation exercises. (An edition for Nintendo’s Wii requires players to hold a controller.) “Leela,” which translates to “play” in Sanskrit, is less of a game and more of an experience, though there are a few game-play elements. Seven exercises based on the seven “chakras,” the points along the body that Chopra says serve as energy centers, task players with moving their bodies to control graphics on screen set to a soothing soundtrack. increase in difficulty, but “Leela” places no importance on a final score or finishing the exercises. Chopra hopes that “Leela” will mark the beginning of an evolution for the interactive medium. He believes that if gaming consoles add the abilities to wirelessly measure brain waves as well as the intervals between heartbeats, then they could be even more beneficial to health and wellness. “If we can measure what’s happening in your body, your heart, your emotions, your breath and your mind,” Chopra says, “then there’s no reason why we can’t create a new generation of video games that can help accelerate the personal, psychological, emotional and spiritual development of human beings.” DERRIK J. <h_]^j D_]^ji0 An “American Horror Story” is coming to TV this October. FX has ordered 13 episodes of a new drama it says has “reinvented the horror genre.” The show was co-created by Ryan Murphy of “Nip/Tuck” and “Glee” fame. “American Horror Story” stars Dylan McDermott (“The Practice”), left, and Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights”) as a couple who move their family from Boston to Los Angeles to, as FX put it, “reconcile past anguish.” (AP)

tour ends with lunch at a happening Wynwood restaurant. Once considered a rough neighborhood, Wynwood has become a destination for artists from all over the world. Wynwood is also now home to one of the world’s largest installations of murals by multiple graffiti artists. “It’s so not what you would expect of Miami,” said Jesse Bull, an economics professor who took one of Roam Rides’ recent graffiti tours. “The graffiti has kind of added to that. It livens it up and makes it fresh and artsy.” Guides point out work by different local artists while explaining the evolution of graffiti from the days when artists plastered their names on vacant buildings and train cars as a way to gain street cred. These days, building owners give artists permission to spray paint their designs, and these legal pieces share the walls of dozens of neighborhood art galleries and chic restaurants. They’re easy to distinguish from illegal graffiti, which is often done fast, in secret and at night. The sanctioned murals allow artists to take their time and work in depth in large spacess. “That generation is going to bring it to another level where, one day, it’s going to be like Pop Art,” said Erni Vales, who runs a studio in the arts district.”

Get jamming with fresh produce and unexpected herbs <eeZ

There’s so much fresh seasonal fruit — burgundy cherries, lipstick-red strawberries — at farmers markets and in Harris Teeter bins lately, it’s like an episode of “Eating Rainbow” out there. But if you don’t want to enjoy this bounty right away, then maybe you should make like Grandma and whip up some homemade jam or jelly. Sweetest of all, it’s not that tough. Mallory Staley, executive pastry chef at 1789 (1226 36th St. NW; 202-965-1789, 1789restau-

rant.com), has been making jam since she was a little girl, when she helped her grandparents put in jars just-harvested peaches, strawberries and blackberries on their farm outside Frederick, Md. “I was always interested in the process,” she says. “Not that I had a choice. I was given a spoon and put to work.” Now she turns out sweet spreads at work, like her signature strawberry rhubarb (see recipe sidebar), which accompanies 1789’s cheese platters. The first step tin making jam is picking produce that’s up to the job. And — surprise! — that’s not necessarily the same crops you’d choose to snack on. “I get the most flavor out of fruits that are almost rotten,” Staley says. “You want

Place the fruit into a pot. In a small bowl, place one cup of sugar with the pectin. Mix together to really coat the pectin (it will form clumps if this step is not followed). Add to the fruit. Stir in the remaining sugar and cook over medium-low heat for two to three hours. Make sure you stir the pot every 15 to 20 minutes to ensure it is not burning at the bottom. Once the jam is to the desired consistency, remove heat and add in the lemon juice. Proceed as you would to can. MALLORY STALEY, 1789

them to be super-ripe and superdelicious.” The riper the fruit, the more natural sugar will be present, so you won’t have to add much refined sugar to your recipe. If you’ve never jammed before, start with something sweet like strawberries so nature corrects beginner’s blunders. To make sure your spread gels, Winifred Schulteis, co-owner and chief jammer at Quaker Valley Orchards (Quakervalleyorchards. com), recommends adding a little natural pectin (brands such as Ball and Bernardin are at most grocery stores). “It helps it set faster,” she says. “And it helps retain more flavor of the fruit, because you’re not cooking everything out of it.” You can also mix and match the unexpected. “I like apricots and rosemary, but most people wouldn’t think to make a jam out of these two ingredients,” says Stefano Frigerio, the owner of D.C.’s Copper Pot Food Company (Copperpotfoodco.com), known for exotic jams such as red

beet with rhubarb, and white fig with balsamic vinegar. “Experiment a little, and you might be pleasantly surprised by the results.” An easy way to add a new twist on a classic flavor is to incorporate herbs. “It gives you a little hint of something extra after you get past the fruitiness,” Staley says. The final step is canning your creations. Start by washing your jars and lids in soapy hot water, then boil them for at least 10 minutes to sterilize them. Fill up your containers (leave an inch or two at the top), seal them, and submerge them back in boiling water to kill any lingering microorganisms. The times vary depending on what you’re canning and what elevation you’re at, so check out the National Center for Home Food Preservation’s website for full details (Uga.edu/nchfp). Let your jars cool first, but then feel free to crack one open so you can enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of your labor. NE VIN MARTELL

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Sure, you know that you can’t believe everything you read or hear, but the evidence is likely to be unusually compelling. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Putting your priorities first can count for much — and it doesn’t mean you’re neglecting anyone else in the process. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Now is a good time to put a past mistake behind you for good. There is no value any longer in reliving what you cannot undo. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’re out to get precisely what you want, and you’re not likely to accept anything but that. Second best is not for you.

Yesterday’s Solution

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You can trust one of the experts to steer you in the right direction, but not all of them. This may be a matter of personalities. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’ve not been following your instincts as much as you might in recent days, but you can certainly make up for lost time.

<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. 7-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) The promise you have recently made to tell no one what someone else has told you may not have to be kept after all. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may be the one who others are counting on to see them through a difficult situation, but can you really bear up under the pressure?
