Badger dreads her inevitable waddle of shame into the woods

The bad news: A cow had been sexting from the phone all day

A female badger spent much of this week sleeping it off at a Polish animal shelter after being found passed out drunk on a beach in the resort town of Rewal, AFP reported. Wandzia was found surrounded by seven beer bottles, with another two stashed in nearby bushes. She had apparently taken the beer from beachgoers and opened the bottles with her teeth. She was to be returned to the wild after she recovered. (EXPRESS)

A Wichita Falls, Texas, businessman used an app to find his iPhone in a rural pasture after it fell about 9,300 feet during a flight home from Houston. Ben Wilson said the phone fell out of the Beechcraft Bonanza on Monday when a pressure change caused the passenger door to open slightly. Wilson and an employee used an app to narrow the search to near Jacksboro, some 50 miles away. They found the still-working phone under a mesquite tree. (AP)

The man wanted to press charges against both his girlfriend and the offending cat. (EXPRESS)

Replacing Bill Cosby?

Georgetown soccer embraces ‘Dad Bod’

Take a walk by Ben’s Chili Bowl, the iconic D.C. restaurant, and you’ll see him: Bill Cosby, smiling alongside President Barack Obama in a mural that spans the east side of the building. Maybe it’s time to replace the embattled comedian, who’s facing multiple sexual assault allegations. Here are a few suggestions pulled from D.C.’s rich sports history. CLINTON YATES

John Thompson Jr.

Forever a popular guy around town, the Redskins cornerback was not just a good player, but also a good human. His Darrell Green Youth Foundation has been around since 1988 and his presence on various education and sports boards over the years, including the Baltimore-Washington 2012 Summer Olympics bid, has made him a continuous presence in the area long after his playing days ended. Green is basically an awesome dude and no one would have a problem with his face on a wall.

A bit more of a nontraditional choice, but one that could definitely work. Leonard moved to D.C. when he was a kid, eventually ending up in Prince George’s County. He grew up boxing in the area, rising to become an Olympic champion and winning multiple titles across five weight classes as a pro. For a while in the ’80s, Leonard was a huge deal. And his face would also be a nod to the local boxing scene, which can feel like an increasingly forgotten chapter of D.C.’s history.

Big John is Big John. His face is synonymous with a glorious era of D.C. basketball and his cultural influence as head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas is undeniable. It sounds like a joke, but there are people who legitimately believed that Georgetown was a historically black college because of the opportunities Thompson gave to young black men at the esteemed Jesuit school. For a certain generation, he was basically the pinnacle of African-American empowerment in athletics.

Old Heller’s property gets a new owner Heller’s, the iconic bakery that served Mount Pleasant for more than 80 years, closed in December and the space has sat vacant since. Now the property has a new owner. On Thursday, the landlord, Jean Lujan, confirmed the new tenant will be a project from Nick Pimentel, co-owner of Room 11 and the upcoming Bad Saint. Pimentel said the space will be the future home to Paisley Fig, the bakery adjoining Room 11. “We are going to keep the tradition of the bakery alive,” Pimentel said. HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS)

Turning it up The U.S. Treasury and a D.C. law firm are fuming over a street band’s loud music THE DISTRICT One morning this week, five members of Spread Love, a New Orleans-style street band, gathered at a busy D.C. intersection, pulled out four trombones, a drum set and a tips bucket, and began playing “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” The band’s brassy riffs at 15th Street and New York Avenue NW always delight the tourists heading toward the White House. But the very spot that’s proven so profitable for Spread Love has also earned it the enmity of employees at two major D.C. institutions: the Treasury Department and the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. Apparently, the economists in charge of our nation’s financial stability and the attorneys who represent many of our country’s corporate high-rollers and whitecollar criminal defendants are struggling to focus inside their offices because the band is so loud. They are hearing Spread Love spreading its love too much. The conflict, which began this spring and was first chronicled by the “Above the Law” blog,

pits two very different slices of Washington against each other: the super-educated class of strivers working at the upper echelons of government and law against a group of exuberant street buskers who make a living off tourists. Spread Love plays all over the city, but the band’s favorite spots are outside the Farragut North Metro stop and at the corner of 15th Street and New York Avenue NW. The band sometimes lands paid gigs, too. Still, to many of the men and women cloistered away in offices at Treasury and Skadden Arps, Spread Love is a nuisance. “We have to relocate our conference calls. We can’t have meetings in that corner of the building anymore. It’s like they’re playing music in the building,” said one Treasury Department employee, who, true to Washington form, would speak only anonymously. At Skadden Arps, Mitchell Ettinger, who leads the Washington office, wrote an email in May to the staff apologizing for the “inconvenience” of the band, which

was “making it difficult for people … to work.” The firm reached out to the Secret Service and D.C. police, he wrote, but the agencies said the musicians were legal. Ettinger added that Skadden Arps — which touts on its website its experience defending clients against anti-bribery regulations — tried negotiating with Spread Love to relocate, but failed. local and Lonnie Shepard, 35, aka, “Love Soul,” a trombonist. “Yeah, they sent over a security guard one day,” McCollough said. “And the guard said, ‘I don’t have a problem with you, but a couple people in the building do. Could we pay you to get off this spot, like $200 a week?’ ” Shepard said. “We can make that in an hour.” “So,” McCollough said, “we got back to them the next day, and said, ‘We’re not interested.’ ” The city’s noise regulations protect “First Amendment activities” in commercially zoned areas downtown, where there is no decibel limit, according to Gwendolyn Crump, the D.C. police department’s chief spokeswoman. Does the D.C. police consider street musicians who busk — like Spread Love — insulated by the First Amendment? Crump declined to discuss the specifics around the Spread Love situation. “Noise enforcement is a complicated issue,” she wrote in an email. “With street musicians, there may be First Amendment rights associated with it.” Steve Belk, aka “Country,” Spread Love’s director, said the band members have known each other for years and have played together in various church ensembles. They decided to take their music to the streets last fall. “We make enough for everyone to pay the bills,” McCollough said. “This is better than nineto-five work.” He said some of the high-powered office dwellers actually like hearing the band’s music: “One day, the spouse of a lawyer there came down and said, ‘My husband tells me he loves you guys, but everyone in his cubicle is livid.’ ” But those at Treasury and Skadden Arps who long for quiet should mark the following date and time down as the perfect window for conference calls, meetings and document review: Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. That’s when Spread Love will definitely not be downtown. They’ve got a gig at the Kennedy Center. IAN SHAPIRA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

BALTIMORE Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced Thursday that he will immediately shut down the scandal-plagued Baltimore City Detention Center, saying inhumane conditions and corruption have run rampant there. Hogan called the fortresslike facility, which houses 750 inmates, a “black eye” for the state of Maryland. The Civil War-era facility is the only local jail in the nation to be run by a state. The inmates are expected to be reassigned to nearby detention centers, Hogan said during a news conference outside the jail. He declined to say where the inmates would be

moved, citing security reasons. “It makes no sense to keep this deplorable facility open,” Hogan said. The jail has a history of gang activity and corruption. In 2013, federal prosecutors charged dozens of people, including corrections officers, with participating in a scheme that allowed the Black Guerrilla Family gang to operate a drug-trafficking operation from within the center. The case led to 40 convictions as of February, with inmates, guards and law-enforcement officers describing an environment in which criminals ran the show. Raymond Tensing, right, appears in court on Thursday in Cincinnati.

Cincinnati officer pleads not guilty CINCINNATI Raymond Tensing, the white, former University of Cincinnati police officer charged with murder in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black driver during a traffic stop, pleaded not guilty on Thursday morning. Tensing, 25, was making his first court appearance since he was indicted and arrested on Wednesday, 10 days after he shot and killed Samuel Dubose, 43, during a traffic stop about half a mile from the university’s campus. On Wednesday, a Hamilton County prosecutor said that a grand jury had indicted Tensing on one count of murder and another of voluntary manslaughter. A warrant was issued, and he turned himself in.

Tensing, who faces up to life in prison, only spoke Thursday to tell the judge that he understood the charges against him. Through his attorney, he pleaded not guilty to both charges. Hamilton County Judge Megan E. Shanahan set Tensing’s bond at $1 million. The former officer “is facing the possibility of life in prison,” she said. “It’s the court’s duty to ensure his appearance.” When bond was set, applause erupted in the courthouse. As the cheers rang out, Tensing dropped his head and looked down. Shanahan admonished and quieted the people. She said Tensing’s next court date would be Aug. 19, and after 3 minutes, it was over and Tensing was led away. MARK BERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

WASHINGTONPOST.COM TO YOUR HEALTH

The next big nothing Zero delivery time could be the future of retail, and there’s a race to get there BUSINESS The latest business goal is zero. Zero excess capacity, zero waste, zero errors — technology makes these theoretically possible. Now Amazon could be on the cusp of introducing another zero into our business lexicon: zero delivery time. (Disclosure: Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos owns Washington Post Express.) Amazon’s latest attempt to reach zero delivery time could be a drive-through grocery store in Silicon Valley. Shoppers would pick up grocery items in a physical store after first ordering online and scheduling a pickup time. But there’s still some debate about whether this is going to happen. Amazon itself has not confirmed the rumor. It’s all part of a strategy to get packages to consumers faster than ever before.

The last mile In some cities, Amazon Prime offers one-hour delivery. The problem is the last mile.

In order to get packages to consumers that fast, you need huge warehouses as close to consumers as possible. And then you’ve got to get the packages to consumers’ homes. That’s where drones come in. The idea of using drones to drop off packages on doorsteps sounded a bit daft when it first appeared at the end of 2013, but now the FAA is increasingly on board, and a whole lobbying movement is starting to form around commercial drones. Or you can shorten the distance between warehouse and consumer. That’s the drive-through grocery store: the consumer comes to the product rather than the product to the consumer.

would be sent to data centers, which would relay those orders — as well as the digital files for printing the products — to a fleet of mobile trucks equipped with 3-D printers. As trucks made their way to delivery points, they would be 3-D printing products on the go. The only way delivery could be made faster is if a company knew your order before you placed it. According to one concept for which it received a patent in 2013, Amazon was thinking of ways to predict consumer purchases and send them on the way before they had even been ordered, by analyzing abandoned shopping carts and wish lists. Amazon called it “anticipatory shipping.”

On-demand products

The Amazon-killer

But if you’re really going to get to zero delivery time, you have to give customers products on demand. In 2014, Amazon patented a method of 3-D manufacturing on demand. Customers’ orders

There’s another “zero” in the retail world — zero margins. Critics say Amazon constantly slices its prices in order to drive competitors out of business. The faster that prices drop, though, the faster margins head to zero. If

you’re as big as Amazon you can make it up on volume. Everyone else goes out of business. That appears to be the retail strategy of the next rumored Amazon-killer — Jet.com, which is primarily going after Amazon based on price and turning the Internet into a giant Costco. Once you sign up and pay a $49 annual membership fee, you get access to what Jet.com promises will be the best prices on the Internet. The more items you load into your shopping basket, the lower prices will go. If given the choice between zero delivery time and zero margins, it’s up to the consumer to signal which one is more important. If zero margins are more important, then we’re going to see more and more companies take the Jet.com approach. If zero delivery time is more important, then we will continue to see innovations such as drones and 3-D printers. DOMINIC BASULTO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Want a more social tot? Talk about feelings People used to think that social skills were something kids were born with, not taught. But a growing body of research shows that the environment a child grows up in as an infant and toddler can have a major impact on how they interact with others as they get older. And it turns out that a key factor may be the type of language they hear around them. Psychologists at the University of York observed 40 mothers and their babies at 10, 12, 16 and 20 months and logged the kind of language mothers used during play. They were especially interested in “mind-related comments,” which include inferences about what someone is thinking when a behavior or action happens — like commenting that a child appears “frustrated” when he or she can’t figure out how to use a toy. Then researchers revisited the children when they were 5 or 6 and assessed their sociocognitive ability. It turns out that the more a parent made mindrelated comments while the child was an infant or toddler, the higher the child’s test scores were at age 5 or 6. “These findings show how a mother’s ability to tune-in to her baby’s thoughts and feelings early on helps her child to learn to empathise with the mental lives of other people,” Elizabeth Kirk, lead study author, said in a statement. “It’s the first real evidence that there is a possibility that a part of the aircraft may have been found,” said Australian Transport Minister Warren Truss, whose country is leading the search for the plane in a remote patch of ocean far off Australia’s west coast. “It’s too early to make that judgment, but clearly we are treating this as a major lead.” Investigators have found a number on the part, but it is not a serial or registration number, Truss said. It could be a maintenance number, which may help investigators figure out what plane it belongs to, he said.

prosecutor’s office. Air safety investigators — one of them a Boeing investigator — have identified the component as a “flaperon” from the trailing edge of a Boeing 777 wing, a U.S. official said. Flight 370, which disappeared March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board, is the only 777 known to be missing. The piece could help investigators figure out how the plane crashed, but whether it will help search crews pinpoint the rest of the wreckage is unclear, given the complexity of the currents in the southern Indian Ocean and the time that has elapsed since the plane disappeared.

THREE POINTERS

A decisive year awaits

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Just like ol’ times: Rookie Scherff has some Hog ties much. He looks undersized at a solid 6 foot 5, 319 pounds, but another dozen pounds might eventually be added. Thursday’s training camp opener saw Scherff finally donning full pads. Like any uniform, it gave him a more serious look. Offseason camps had a lighter atmosphere intended for learning, not burning defensive linemen. Scherff will spend training camp opposing linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, the Redskins’ $57.5 million man who signed a five-year extension Wednesday. After 13½ sacks last season, Kerrigan will show Scherff how quickly NFL players can get around you. “There’s nobody better than Ryan Kerrigan,” Scherff said. “I get to go against him each and every day to help me get better. Skills and drills. It’s a little different than college.” Scherff seems the offensive counterpart to Kerrigan’s niceguy demeanor. Scherff talks about being hard-nosed, but you get the sense he would help little old ladies cross the street.

3 JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The Hogs would have loved Brandon Scherff. If the Redskins’ rookie offensive tackle had joined the team in the 1980s, Russ Grimm would have jammed Scherff’s dorm door shut with pennies to make him late for meetings. Jeff Bostic might have sent Scherff’s bike up the flagpole. George Starke may have forced Scherff to carry the entire offensive line’s helmets and pads to the locker room after practice. And John Riggins would have invited the newcomer to the 5 O’Clock Club for a beer. Yes, The Hogs would have tormented the rookie, made him sing at dinner every night and bring doughnuts each morning. But it’s because they would have found a kindred spirit — just like they would have in current left tackle Trent Williams and center Kory Lichtensteiger. Scherff, who played at Iowa, is one of those Midwest linemen whom the NFL loves so

Redskins QB Robert Griffin III isn’t the only NFL player with something to prove this season. Here are others around the league who need to make an onfield statement. (AP)

Redskins first-round draft pick Brandon Scherff listens to offensive line coach Bill Callahan during an offseason workout in May.

Scherff, the fifth overall selection, may be the team’s least-heralded top pick in years. Past high picks such as Heath Shuler, Michael Westbrook, Sean Taylor, LaRon Landry, Williams and Robert Griffin III were swarmed by the media in their first camps. Scherff will probably go unnoticed at the mall when he returns to Washington. He’s just one of the guys, which makes Scherff worthy of Hogs candidacy. Quickly, he’s fit in well with fellow linemen. “I just love the guys. They’re

fun to play with,” Scherff said. “Whenever you need help, they’re there to help you. You have to play up to their level or you’re not going to hang in there with them.” Just don’t ask him to sing during team dinners. It’s not happening. “I just want to earn respect from veterans,” he said. “I’m not singing the [Iowa] song. I don’t have any songs. I don’t sing.” Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Follow him on Twitter @Snide_Remarks

Jonathan Papelbon earned his 18th save of the season in his Nationals debut Thursday.

One game in, Papelbon impressed by Storen Nationals’ new closer says his predecessor is ‘really, really good’ NATIONALS 1, MARLINS 0 Jonathan Papelbon’s debut with the Nationals was just as they envisioned. It was perfect — like his season so far. Max Scherzer scattered three hits over seven innings, Papelbon got his first save for Washington with a flawless ninth inning and the Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Thursday. “To be honest, very nervous,” Papelbon said when asked how he felt entering his Washington debut. “I can’t really explain it. You come here to a team and expect to win and expect to do your

job. That’s all that’s expected of me. I’m glad it’s out of the way.” Backed by Ryan Zimmerman’s second-inning homer off Dan Haren, Scherzer (11-8) struck out six and lowered his ERA to 2.22. “Scherzer was obviously on his game,” Haren said. “He’s a great pitcher. He was just better today.” Former closer Drew Storen pitched a perfect eighth, striking out two in his new setup role. Papelbon said he asked Storen after the game: “Can you show me that slider grip?” “He was really, really good,” Papelbon said. Acquired Tuesday from Philadelphia, Papelbon retired Ichiro Suzuki on a comebacker, got Christian Yelich to line out and struck out pinch-hitter Michael

Morse for his 18th save in 18 chances this season. Zimmerman, who returned to the lineup this week after missing 49 games with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, had two hits for Washington, as did Michael A. Taylor. The Nationals head to New York to take on the Mets in a weekend series pitting the top two teams in the NL East. Scherzer — who walked a season-high three, matching the total issued in his last eight starts combined entering Thursday — allowed no runs in an outing for the sixth time this year. “If you don’t score, you’re not going to win,” Marlins manager Dan Jennings said, after the club endured its 26th game of scoring one run or less. The New York Giants have no direct knowledge about the extent of the hand injuries Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul sustained in a July 4 fireworks accident in Florida. Co-owner John Mara disclosed that most of the Giants’ knowledge about JPP’s condition has come from his agents and through text messages with the 26-year-old, who was tagged as a franchise player and due to make at least $14.8 million this season. “I am disappointed he is not here,” Mara said Thursday, when the Giants reported to training camp. Mara said the Giants are aware of reports Pierre-Paul had a finger amputated in the accident and fractured a thumb, but the team has not been able to verify that. “We don’t know how extensive the damage is, that’s the problem,” Mara said. “I don’t know how many fingers he has.” (AP)

Redskins’ Reed sets goal to play in all 16 games NFL Sidelined for the offseason after having a procedure on his left knee, tight end Jordan Reed received clearance on Wednesday to practice fully. As the Redskins kicked off training camp on Thursday, the thirdyear veteran declared that he feels “great,” and aims to finally shake the injury bug. “I’m excited, man,” said Reed, who has proven himself as a talented pass-catcher, but has failed to make it through either of his first two NFL seasons without missing time with injury. “My goal is to play all 16 games and help this team out.” When healthy, Reed ranks among the most dangerous tight ends in the league. As a rookie, he proved himself as a go-to player on third downs and averaged 11.1 yards per catch while notching 45 receptions for 499 yards and three touchdowns. Last season, he had 50 catches for 465 yards, but no touchdowns. Reed said he now understands what it will take to remain healthy an entire year. “What I learned these first two years is it’s going to take a lot of maintenance and getting a lot of treatment, staying after and taking care of my body, listening to my body and focusing on playing my game,” he said. “I feel like I can give a lot to the team if I’m out there every week. I can make some mismatch problems.” MIKE JONES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

STYLE In a small milk crate, hidden away beneath a side table, Silver Spring resident Bethany Meissner stores nearly everything she needs to work out: Resistance bands, three sets of dumbbells and a yoga book. The only fitness equipment not stashed there is the laptop she uses to watch exercise videos on YouTube. “I wanted to be active and healthy, but I hated going to the gym,” says Meissner, 30, who works in marketing. So she created a gym in the 740-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment she shares with her fiance, Jarrod Jabre. While fitness rooms are fast becoming a staple of D.C.-area apartments and neighborhood gyms abound, some renters prefer to stay home to work out. And they’re finding it easier than ever to stay in shape without forking over loads of cash. In Meissner’s case, working out in her CONTINUED ON PAGE R3

Big rent check? It isn’t just you MARKET TRENDS More people than ever are renting instead of buying homes, but being a renter isn’t getting any easier. For many households, the monthly rent check is so big that it eats up the majority of their paycheck — and the burden is growing. Some 20.7 million rental households, or about half of all renters, spent more than 30 percent of their income on housing in 2013, according to a report from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. About 11 million of those households spent more than half of their paycheck on rent and utilities, up 37 percent from 2003, the

rental is partly a matter of conscience. “I didn’t want to give my business to the gym closest to my home,” Meissner says, explaining that she thinks their ads focus on body-shaming and “changing the way you look, instead of how you feel.” The flexibility is a boon, too. It’s easy to fit in a workout when you don’t have to trek downstairs to a fitness room and wait for a treadmill, let alone jog or drive to the gym. And it doesn’t take much to create a perfect apartment setup. “You don’t need a lot of equipment,” says Lisa Reed, owner of Lisa Reed Fitness (lisareed fitness.com) in Arlington, who offers at-home training sessions to clients in all shapes and sizes of abodes. Finding functional space may seem tricky, but a little creativity can go a long way, as Meissner found. “We slightly adjusted how the living room is organized so I can put my laptop on the kitchen bar and have just enough space to do a video,” she says. Crunch the numbers and figure out what you’re willing to invest in terms of your workout. Streaming workout videos, like

study found. (Financial advisers typically recommend that people spend less than a third of their pay on housing costs.) Renters in cities that people expect to be expensive, like New York City and Washington, aren’t the only ones struggling to pay the bills. “The rental housing crisis is everywhere,” says Angela

Boyd of Enterprise Community Partners, an organization that advocates for affordable housing. Middle-class families are among those struggling the most. The number of people making between $45,000 and $75,000 who spent more than 50 percent of their income on housing increased by 72 percent between

Don’t sweat the small space A good workout doesn’t require a gym membership or fitness room, let alone a big space. Here are a few apartment-friendly moves. H.L.

Squats Equipment: Resistance band or kettlebell optional

Squats work multiple muscle groups and require only enough room to sit, making them perfect for small apartment renters, says Lisa Reed, owner of Lisa Reed Fitness in Arlington. Need more of a challenge? “Do squats with resistance to add more weight,” she says.

Russian twist Equipment: Medicine ball optional

A Russian twist, an exercise that works the abs and obliques, sounds like a cocktail and requires minimal floor space. Crunch up, then twist your torso left and right. Reed says she adds a medicine ball to maximize the impact.

Cardio Equipment: None

Running or marching on the spot (easily done while watching TV) is a simple, free addition to an apartment workout. (And allows for guilt-free bingewatching of the new season of “Orange Is the New Black.”)

the subscription-based DailyBurn (dailyburn.com), which costs $12.95 a month, are a lowcost alternative to in-home training sessions — and you can do them whenever the fitness itch strikes, no scheduling required. Consider picking up some basic equipment that doesn’t take up too much space. Meissner has resistance bands ($12.99, online) which are budget- and fitness-friendly. “Resistance bands are some

of the most versatile exercise equipment,” says Mike Everts, owner of FIT Personal Training (fit-dc.com), whose in-home clients include renters. He recommends tenants purchase bands of varying tensile strengths to target different muscle groups, as well as a set of dumbbells ($30, online) or dial weights, adjustable dumbbells that can add or subtract weight as needed. Add a yoga mat (around $20, online), to keep

2003 and 2013. For people making between $30,000 and $45,000, the number of renters in that position increased by 69 percent. The cheapest apartments are being snapped up quickly. The number of available units that cost less than $800 a month fell by 12 percent in 2014 from the year before, according to the report. In many metro areas like Washington, much of the rental housing being created consists of luxury apartments, which come with a higher price tag, Boyd says. Higher rents are making the process of saving for a down payment very, very difficult, Boyd points out. “You’re looking around and saying, ‘I can’t afford to buy a home, and I also can’t afford to rent one of these luxury apartment buildings,’” she says. JONNELLE MARTE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

from sweating all over your floor. Whatever you choose, be sure to create a setup that you’ll want to use. For example, having a variety of weights can keep you from feeling intimidated. “Some days, I know that if I use my heaviest set [of weights], I wouldn’t even begin the workout,” Meissner says. If you really can’t squeeze in any extra gear, don’t stress. You can get by without any equipment, because you already have a great tool: your own body. “You can use your body weight to do cardio,” Everts says, “like running in place, burpees or walking lunges.” This means you don’t even need a dedicated workout space in, say, your junior one-bedroom. You can even work out in the kitchen, Reed says, doing push-ups against the countertop, for example. Staying motivated — and distraction-free — is important, so find a way to fit in fitness in ways that work for you. “Do a set of squats while you’re waiting for your food [to cook],” Reed says. “Do a little something every day. You don’t have to go to the gym.”

$18M overhaul planned for apartments An $18 million renovation project is planned for Tilden Hall, a 76-unit apartment building in Washington. The building (3945 Connecticut Ave. NW) was recently acquired by Urban Investment Partners in coordination with the Tilden Hall Tenants Association for $13.3 million. Renovation plans include installing individually controlled heating and air conditioning in each unit and upgrading all the common areas and apartment interiors. Architect Frederic B. Pyle designed Tilden Hall, which was completed in 1924. The renovations will maintain the historic character of the building.

Senior apartments slated for Brookland Twenty-five affordable units for people 55 and older are scheduled to be finished by this time next year at Girard Street Senior Apartments (1545 Girard St. NE) in the District’s Brookland neighborhood. The development includes local rental supplement program funds. The housing vouchers mean the residents will pay 30 percent of their income. The development will include free covered parking, a laundry facility, and resident and supportive service, including more than 1,800 square feet of community space with a demonstration kitchen, a yoga studio, a library and a card room on each floor. D.C. United sharing the load D.C. UNITED The MLS All-Stars defeated Tottenham 2-1 in the league’s All-Star Game in Colorado on Wednesday night. Players from 14 of the league’s 20 teams represented MLS, but one team conspicuously absent was D.C. United. Despite sitting in first place in the Eastern Conference and being tied for the most points in MLS, United did not get one player onto the All-Star roster. There were certainly some United players who could feel aggrieved that they didn’t get an All-Star nod — Perry Kitchen, Bobby Boswell and Chris Rolfe spring to mind — but United’s

lack of representation in Colorado was more indicative of how the team has found success this season by sharing the load. Ben Olsen’s side has reached the top of the standings through a collective effort rather than through the exploits of any individual superstar. United has no player in the league’s top 12 in goals or assists.

Brady lawsuit transferred from Minn. to N.Y. court Tom Brady’s lawsuit against the NFL, in which he asks that his four-game suspension be overturned, will be heard in New York instead of Minnesota. Brady and the players’ union filed their suit Wednesday in Minnesota. American Pharoah is the 1-5 favorite in a field of eight 3-year-olds for Sunday’s $1.75 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park. It will be American Pharoah’s first race since he swept the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes and became the 12th Triple Crown winner and first in 37 years. (AP)

Phillies agree to trade Cole Hamels to Rangers in eight-player deal

Outside of Rolfe (six) and Jairo Arrieta (five), no United player has more than two goals entering Saturday’s game against Real Salt Lake at RFK Stadium. At the back, Boswell again has been the rock of United’s defense, but the cast of characters around him has been much more interchangeable this season than in 2014.

Bill Hamid, last year’s MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, has dealt with injuries and has started only 16 of the team’s 23 games. Andrew Dykstra has filled in for Hamid effectively so far, and will continue to start the next couple of games with Hamid still injured. Center back Steve Birnbaum, last season’s MLS Rookie of the Year finalist, has also missed time with injury, as has right back Sean Franklin — an AllStar last season. In their place, Kofi Opare and Chris Korb have helped ensure United barely skipped a beat defensively. Sharing the goal-scoring and defensive duties among various rotating parts isn’t the best way to ensure All-Star representation, but United won’t care much if it continues to be the way to rack up wins. Toronto trailed Minnesota by two games for the AL’s second wild card entering Thursday. (AP)

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is the toughest man in the world and he STILL can’t be bothered to use his turn signal.

ALSO OPENING

BO BRIDGES (PARAMOUNT PICTURES)

‘That Sugar Film’

He’s still fit to thrill Star Tom Cruise deftly commands the fifth ‘Mission: Impossible’ adventure

FILM REVIEW Preposterous, playful and shamelessly entertaining, “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” obeys the first rule of action thrillerscum-star vehicles: Take this all too seriously and you’re dead meat. Tom Cruise, who delivers a Dorian Gray-like performance in his fifth outing as the Impossible Mission Force’s Ethan Hunt, knows this in his preternaturally uncreaky bones. Cruise strides through “Rogue Nation” with the combination of swagger and winking selfdeprecation that have helped make him one of Hollywood’s most enduring and, dang it, lovable screen products. Just when viewers are about to give into full eye roll — when he displays the perfectly sculpted chest that his contract apparently stipulates he bare in every movie, say, or lays one of his penetrating Blue Steel looks on the baddie du jour — he delivers a perfectly timed pratfall or handsomely dim retort.

Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie, who worked with Cruise on the far grittier “Jack Reacher,” is just as canny as Cruise himself when it comes to deploying his lead actor. “Rogue Nation” turns out to be a fleet, well-crafted, effortlessly stylish addition to the “Mission: Impossible” canon in which outlandish derring-do, risibly arcane stakes and a woefully overlong running time are leavened by an endearing sense of humor that at times approaches high camp. Co-stars Simon Pegg and Alec Baldwin bring a deadpan humor to the topical plot, which touches on such tropes as computer hacks, government transparency and global terrorism. The great strength of McQuarrie is that, even when he’s leaning into the laughs, he plays it straight — he doesn’t sacrifice inviolable core values in the name of escapism, whether in the form of smart writing or superb production aesthetics. Handsomely

photographed by Robert Elswit, “Rogue Nation” possesses the sleek, globe-trotting feel we’ve come to expect from the James Bonds and Jason Bournes of the world. What distinguishes this iteration is a classical sensibility that feels almost like a throwback, like old-school 007. Through it all, Cruise maintains the signature focus and physical cool that we’ve come to expect, even if Ethan has by now become a little unhinged in his righteous lone-wolf fury. What’s more, as he did in the

This doc makes a good case against processed sugar, with the added benefit that its message is delivered via a filmmaker (Damon Gameau, above) who has decided to eat 40 teaspoons of the stuff per day to demonstrate its effects. “That Sugar Film” is not only entertaining and informative, but also deeply disturbing, as Gameau puts on pounds, inches and beginnings of fatty liver disease. criminally under-seen “Edge of Tomorrow,” Cruise chooses for Ethan to work with a female counterpart who, rather than a stock lady-in-jeopardy or erotic love interest, is just as competent and physically courageous as he is. (In a clever twist, it’s Pegg’s dweeby character, Benji, who emerges as “Rogue Nation’s” damsel in distress.) Indeed, as much as Cruise dominates “Rogue Nation,” it’s his co-star, Rebecca Ferguson, who emerges as the film’s true and most memorable revelation. The dazzling, auburn-haired Swedish beauty manages to be sexy, strong, complicated and enigmatic in a performance that Cruise highlights by way of his own reflected persona. It may not entail hanging off the side of a moving airplane, but it’s a pretty gutsy and admirable stunt nonetheless, free of vanity and brimming with the secure, unfussy confidence of a true star.

The directors of the 2011 French drama “The Intouchables” once again cast Omar Sy, above. This time he plays Samba, an African immigrant who develops a relationship with a corporate executive (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Though it’s impressively shot, the conclusion of this odd, crowded romance is just too glib to be satisfying.

Stunt silence: Why does Oscar ignore these smash hits? Wade Eastwood should win an Oscar for “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.” Unfortunately he’s not eligible, because Eastwood is the film’s stunt coordinator and there’s no trophy for that. Look, I am the last person who wants the Academy Awards broadcast to go on any longer than it already does. And I’ve written extensively about the problems I have with any sort of artistic competition. But if the Oscars are about celebrating excellence in film, then Eastwood and his compatriots deserve recognition, because like every other person who works in film, stunt coordinators take the hypothetical and use it to create a believable illusion — in their case, of someone punching someone else in the face. For “Mission: Try to Remember Where the

Punctuation Marks Go,” Eastwood had one of the most important jobs, and he has no shot at being recognized for his work on any sort of public level. While there’s been a push for such an Oscar category for years, stunt coordinators still remain awardless. You’d think you wouldn’t want to tick off people who could also not-pretend beat you up. I don’t know how much stunt coordinators have to do with conceiving the stunts, but at some point in the planning of “MI Colon Goes Here,”

someone said, “You know what would make a good weapon? A BMW. Going backward.” Someone else came up with “Let’s have a fight scene at the Vienna State Opera. No, backstage! NO! On the catwalk! During ‘Turandot!’ And let’s coordinate it with the music!” And you know there’s probably always someone who wants to throw in a motorcycle or six somewhere. Action films typically get Oscar love in only a few technical categories — sound mixing, visual effects — and, yes, those are skills vital to the genre. But the most important thing that makes an excellent action film (like “Mission Wait Is This the Colon or the Dash”) is, well, the action, and you can’t have good action with bad brawls. In one of the new movie’s most thrilling scenes, Rebecca Ferguson faces a bad guy in a knife fight. Everyone who helped put that duel together — from director Christopher McQuarrie to principal costumer Mollie Barr, who chose this totally amazing jacket for Ferguson — could wind up being recognized with an Oscar … except for the person who actually made it happen. It’s enough to make you want to fake-punch somebody. With a BMW. Going backward.

Disappointing ‘Vacation’ heads south real fast Only fans of gross-out jokes and sad slapstick will enjoy this sequel FILM REVIEW Part remake, part sequel, “Vacation” follows Rusty Griswold, the son in the original 1983 “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” There, he was played by Anthony Michael Hall; here, Ed Helms picks up the baton, portraying the now-grown Rusty as a dweeby pilot for a budget airline. Taking a break from puddle-jumping, Rusty has decided to drag his wife, Debbie (Christina Applegate), and their two sons on a road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles — by way of Memphis, for some reason — simply to ride a roller coaster called the Velociraptor. Writer-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein seem to think that the “angry”sounding Korean language, the only one spoken by the RV’s navigation system, is inherently funny. It’s not. Neither are the

film’s jokes about rape, pedophilia and suicide, nor the cameo by Chevy Chase, who starred in the original film, but who hasn’t been funny in ages. Pushing the envelope is great, but only when some thought goes into the nudging. Instead, we get items checked off of a to-do list. Along with the requisite gross-out humor, cleavage shots and booty-shaking — courtesy of a detour to a sorority — we also get a half-hearted stab at sweeter sentiments. The trip is supposed to be a way for Rusty to reconnect with Debbie, who has grown bored

with their marriage, and for his sons to grow closer. James (Skyler Gisondo) is a sensitive, journalloving teen who is perpetually bullied by his little brother, Kevin (Steele Stebbins), a mini-terrorist with a mouth like a sailor. Kevin at one point puts a plastic bag over James’ head in an attempt to suffocate him. Nothing says comedy like fratricide. There are a couple of mildly amusing moments, such as Debbie’s attempt to show up her young sorority sisters by chugging a pitcher of beer and running an obstacle course. But the most clever detour involves a quartet of police officers jockeying for jurisdiction at the Four Corners monument, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah meet. For the most part, “Vacation” is a sad, cynical rip-off of writer John Hughes’ source material. No one expects originality, but the new film may leave its mark: It’s already looking like the worst movie of the year. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The study speaks for itself Naturalism is a powerful ‘The Stanford Prison Experiment’ (R) tool for ‘The Stanford DIRECTOR: Kyle Patrick Alvarez Prison Experiment’ FILM REVIEW “The Stanford Prison Experiment” bears the blunt, literalistic imprint that the title suggests: Inspired by psychologist Philip Zimbardo’s notorious 1971 study in which he recruited two dozen Stanford University students to impersonate prisoners and guards, this naturalistic drama doesn’t put a whole lot of spin on the ball. Still, the movie serves as a reminder about structures, systems and the abuse of power. Things get underway quietly enough when Zimbardo, played with coal-eyed intensity by Billy Crudup, interviews candidates for the two-week study. A coin toss decides whether they will play convicts or corrections officers,

and the men take to their roles with surprising intensity. Zimbardo himself participated in the production of the film, suggesting that he was willing to be portrayed in a less than flattering light: Crudup plays him as a demonic figure, willing to insert himself into the proceedings and manipulate outcomes with disregard for clinical protocol. Meanwhile, the men under his care are disintegrating into a state of near-chaos, with the fake

guards bullying the prisoners with arbitrary glee, humiliating them in front of their peers and pushing them to physical and emotional limits that result in a full-fledged prison riot. An exceptional ensemble of young actors portrays the subjects, including Ezra Miller as a feisty prisoner, Tye Sheridan and Johnny Simmons as his passive cohorts and Michael Angarano as a guard who takes his “Cool Hand Luke”-inspired impersonation to frightening extremes. “The Stanford Prison Experiment” begins to flag toward the end, and it leaves several questions unanswered. But the film can be appreciated, if only as a showcase for its assured, emotional attuned performances and as a chance to reconsider one of the more well-known and still-influential studies of its era. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Liberal arts students have a new first family Us Weekly reports that Michelle Williams is dating author Jonathan Safran Foer. A source told the site that the “Blue Valentine” actress and the “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” author met through mutual friends. Williams, the source says, “looks finally at peace and genuinely happy.” Foer has two children from a previous marriage, and Williams has a 9-yearold daughter from her relationship with the late Heath Ledger. The real estate battle between Katy Perry and a group of Los Angeles nuns continued this week, as a judge ruled that the nuns improperly sold their convent to a businesswoman, when the archbishop had already sold it to Perry. The order of nuns that has owned the property for more than 40 years sold it to Dana Hollister in June, bypassing approval from Los Angeles’ archbishop. Perry agreed to pay $14.5 million for the convent, while Hollister, who wants to turn the convent into a hotel, agreed to pay $15.5 million. The nuns said they sold the convent to Hollister because they searched for Perry’s music videos and weren’t pleased with what they saw. (AP)
