Down to the Wire for Debt Crisis CkXWhWa =e[i ed Jh_Wb Ex-Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak’s trial is Wednesday, though health problems may inhibit his attendance. He’s accused of stealing government funds and conspiring to kill demonstrators.
Racing to avoid a government default, President Obama and Republican congressional leaders reached urgently for a compromise Sunday to permit vital borrowing by the Treasury in exchange for more than $2 trillion in long-term spending cuts. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said the two sides were “really, really close” to a deal after months of partisan fighting. A few hours later, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid issued a statement saying he had signed off on a pending agreement, subject to approval by the Democratic rank and file. But that was met by conspicuous silence from the White House, McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner’s office, two days before a deadline to raise the federal debt limit and enable the government to keep paying its bills. Privately, officials said a final sticking point concerned possible cuts in the nation’s defense budget in the next two years. Republicans wanted less. Democrats pressed for more in an attempt to shield domestic accounts from greater reductions. Big cuts in government spending

Defense spending cuts last stumbling block in deal to avoid default
Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., pauses after a debt limit vote on Capitol Hill on Sunday.
8_fWhj_iWd 8edZ_d] The broadest outlines of the emerging plan — a deal being worked out in negotiations involving Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, left, and Vice President Joe Biden — would raise the federal debt limit in two stages by at least $2.2 trillion, enough to tide the Treasury over until after the 2012 elections. No benefit cuts were envisioned for the Social Security pension system or Medicare. (AP)

would be phased in over a decade. Thousands of programs — the Park Service, Labor Department and housing among them — could be trimmed to levels last seen years ago. Social Security or Medicare could be scoured for savings. Taxes would be unlikely to rise. Any agreement would have to be passed by the Democrat-controlled Senate and Republican-controlled House before going to the White House for Obama’s signature. With precious little time remaining, both houses were on standby throughout the day, and House Speaker John Boehner was in his office. Without legislation in place by Tuesday, the Treasury will not be able to pay all its bills, raising the threat of a default that administration officials say could inflict catastrophic damage on the economy. If approved, though, a compromise would presumably preserve America’s sterling credit rating, reassure investors in financial markets across the globe and possibly reverse the losses that spread across Wall Street in recent days as the threat of a default grew. Huntsman Puts Niceness On Hold to Criticize Rivals IWbj BWa[ 9_jo A diplomat to the core, Jon Huntsman is well known in Salt Lake City as a likable guy who prefers compromise to combativeness. Niceness is such a strong part of his persona that the Republican pledged to run a civil campaign for president. “He genuinely wants to please people, and he gets along with everyone,” says Olene Walker, a Republican who preceded Huntsman as Utah governor. But now, as Huntsman struggles against better-known opponents, he is both subtly and directly criticizing GOP front-runner Mitt Romney as well as the Democrat who named him U.S. ambassador to China just a few years ago, President Obama.
De Ceh[ Ch$ D_Y[ =ko The shift in tone from nice to critical comes as polls show Jon Huntsman in single digits nationally and in key states, and it follows his decision to change campaign managers. Advisers over the past few weeks have been telling Huntsman that he must engage Mitt Romney and President Obama to boost his prospects of winning the GOP nomination. (AP)
It’s an uncomfortable political role for Huntsman, in part because he has never faced a strong challenge for political office, but it also speaks to his personality. JOSH LOFTIN (AP)

Ahead of Holiday, Horror in Syria
As Ramadan begins, regime broadens its intimidation efforts 8[_hkj
C[Wdm^_b[ $$$ A family peers skyward to find the crescent moon on Sunday night in Amman, Jordan. The phase of the moon is a sign of the Muslim holy month of prayers and spiritual introspection. Efforts to allay predictions of a tense Ramadan have already begun across the Arab world, where Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh urged an end to the months of protests seeking his ouster during the holiday. In Egypt, Cairo’s Tahrir Square is again a tent encampment, and the celebrations that accompanied Hosni Mubarak’s fall on Feb. 11 have given way to anger and impatience over the slow pace of change. In response to the pressure, the judiciary is promising to put Mubarak, his security chief and his two sons on trial this week. Still, Egyptians have not lost their sense of humor. In the annual tradition of naming dates after celebrities, they have dubbed the cheapest, least desirable variety of the fruit “Hosni Mubarak” this year. (AP)
MOHAMMAD HANNON/AP
Syrian security forces backed by tanks and snipers launched a ferocious assault Sunday on defiant cities and towns, killing at least 70 people and possibly many more as the regime raced to crush dissent ahead of Ramadan. Corpses littered the streets after a surge in violence that drew widespread international condemnation. Estimates of the death toll, which were impossible to verify, ranged from around 75 people to nearly 140. The worst carnage was in Hama, the scene of a 1982 massacre by President Bashar Assad’s late father and predecessor and a city with a history of defiance against 40 years of Assad family rule. Hospitals there were overwhelmed with casualties, suggesting the death toll could rise sharply, witnesses said. By mid-morning, the city of
Hama looked like a war zone, residents said. Ramadan, which begins Monday, will present a critical test for the government, which has unleashed deadly firepower since March but still has not been able to put down the revolt. Daily demonstrations are expected to surge during the holy month, when crowds gather in mosques each evening. Though the violence has failed to blunt the protests, the Syrian regime appears to be hoping it can frighten people from taking to the streets during Ramadan. But Sunday’s siege only ignited more calls for defiance among protesters. Assad’s elite forces have waged nearly nonstop crackdowns across the country, but new protest hotbeds have emerged — taxing the already exhausted and overextended military. There have been credible reports of army defections, although it is difficult to gauge how widespread they are. More than 1,600 civilians have been killed in the crackdown on the largely peaceful protests against Assad’s regime since the uprising began. (AP)

Rebels: Impostors Create Rifts in Libyan Opposition Ç?j _i X[ij je 8[d]^Wp_" B_XoW Libyan rebel leaders said Sunday their forces hunted down and clashed with supporters of Moammar Gadhafi who had been posing as rebel fighters to infiltrate the opposition’s eastern stronghold. The overnight battle killed four from each side and added to a sense of crisis within the rebel movement. As officials pieced together events leading up to Sunday’s fight, they announced that a faction of
8WYaijeho Libya’s shaken rebels are trying to rid their ranks of enemies after the assassination last week of their military chief, Abdel-Fattah Younis, who had been arrested on suspicion of mismanaging his forces. fighters called al-Nidaa was actually made up of Gadhafi loyalists. The revelation could raise questions about the loyalty of over rebel factions and sap the movement of needed unity in its six-month push to oust Gadhafi. Suspicions about al-Nidaa were confirmed, a rebel leader said, when officials determined the group was behind two prison breaks Friday in the de facto rebel capital of Benghazi, which freed 200 to 300 inmates, including pro-Gadhafi mercenaries and fighters. Deal will make rider connections to local transit more suitable MWi^_d]jed Union Station will become a hub for intercity bus service under an agreement scheduled to be announced Monday by John D. Porcari, deputy U.S. transportation secretary and chairman of the Union Station Redevelopment Corp. The agreement with Greyhound, Bolt Bus, Megabus and Washington Deluxe will allow riders to get on and off the intercity buses in the
shelter of a reconfigured bus deck in the station’s garage. To put the deal into effect, the bus deck space will need to be restriped, and some utilities will have to be relocated, according to a U.S. Transportation Department source familiar with the agreement. Riders should see the bus operations envisioned in the plan this fall. Consolidation of the District’s intercity bus service is logical and should be a good deal for riders. The low-fare buses are especially popular, but they have not enjoyed a permanent, protected home. Instead, many stop on D.C. streets. Waiting riders are exposed to the weather, the locations of stops are obscure

and confusing, and access to local transit is not always easy. In addition, Greyhound can move buses from its terminal at
First and L streets NE, according to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal has not been publicly announced. This move also will be welcomed by bus riders. The old terminal, wedged between Union Station and the New York Avenue Metrorail station, is not convenient to either. Putting the buses inside Union Station means riders can make easy connections with Metrorail and Metrobus, Amtrak, MARC, VRE and the D.C. Circulator buses. The bus plan won’t yield a profit for the redevelopment corporation, the source said. ROBERT THOMSON (THE WASHINGTON POST )
Latest Fake IDs: So Good, They’re Dangerous MWi^_d]jed The days when faking driver’s licenses was a cottage industry — often practiced in college dorm rooms by a computer geek with a laminating machine — have given way to far more sophisticated and prolific practitioners who operate outside the reach of U.S. law enforcement. In an era when terrorism and illegal immigration have transformed driver’s licenses into sophisticated mini-documents festooned with holograms and bar codes, beating the system has never been easier. Just wire money to “the Chinese guy.” “He’s like some sort of genius in China,” said a 19-year-old who has admitted to drinking underage in bars. “Every kid in Annapolis has one of his licenses.” The “Chinese guy” — whose e-mail address is passed around on college campuses and among

high school kids — is actually a Chinese company that mails untold thousands of fake driver’s licenses to the United States. They have been turning up in states from coast to coast.
To the naked eye — even the practiced eye of most bartenders and police officers — the counterfeits look perfect. The photo and physical description are real. The holograms are exact copies, and
even the bar code can pass unsophisticated scans. “We’re seeing these false IDs being generated from the same source out of China,” said Steven Williams, chief executive of Intellicheck, which supplies detection equipment to federal agencies, law enforcement and businesses. The “Chinese guy” operation has been linked to a company called PARTiTek that is based in Nanjing, China. The technology ranges from simple card-swipe devices to scanners that cost thousands of dollars and supply detailed information about valid cardholders. Remarkably, fake IDs so good that they escape visual detection often are caught by machines because they are too perfect. “About 89 percent of genuine driver’s licenses don’t comply with their own specif ications 100 percent,” Williams said. Are people really cancelling cable to watch TV and movies on the Internet instead? It’s a question that has dogged the pay-TV industry for a year, and a spate of quarterly reports over the next few weeks, starting with Time Warner Cable Inc. on Thursday, could provide important clues. Much lies in the balance. If online video really is taking TV service subscribers from cable, satellite and phone providers, it’s not just bad news for those companies. Analysts also see it leading to more restrictions and higher prices for online video and broadband access, a trend that has already started.

The number of households that gave up pay-TV subscriptions for online video at the start of 2011, according to research firm SNL Kagan.
In July, Netflix Inc.’s streaming video service went from being a freebie thrown in with its DVD-bymail service to something the company charges for separately. Last week, News Corp.’s Fox broadcasting company said that only paying subscribers of Hulu. com or satellite-TV company Dish Network Corp. will be able to watch
:edÊj @kcf j^[ =kd The rising popularity in services such as Hulu and Netflix doesn’t necessarily mean that people are starting to think they can get by without conventional pay-TV. While sitcoms and movies are easy to get through online services, sports aren’t. But if studios and TV networks start seeing online video as something that’s siphoning off their flow of cash, then it’s in their interest to further restrict online viewing, like Fox did, or start charging for it. new episodes of its shows online the day after they air. Non-paying viewers can catch them online eight days later. Hollywood studios and content producers so far have seen online video as an addition to the revenue they get from cable and satellite companies, and they’ve charged less for it. Consumer surveys showed that people didn’t watch less TV just because they went to Hulu.com or Youtube.com sometimes. But in June, the Nielsen Co. said it found that Americans who watch the most video online tend to watch less TV. The ratings agency said it started noticing last fall that a segment of consumers were starting to make a trade-off between online video and regular TV. The activity was more pronounced among people ages 18 to 34, a slice of the population advertisers are particularly eager to target. (AP)

The debate over raising the federal debt limit has triggered a spiral of rhetorical oneupmanship that has all sides stretching for new analogies and catchy one-liners. There’s been ominous talk of driving off a cliff, collateral damage, loaded guns, hostage situations, the dark cloud of uncertainty and the fog of the Twilight Zone. Whole genres of metaphorical warfare have sprung up, producing some hits, but more misses.
Tea party activists gather Wednesday on Capitol Hill to urge lawmakers, particularly Republicans elected under the tea party banner, to not raise the federal debt ceiling.
<eeZ <_]^j
Our Reflecting Pool American voters find a polarized society echoed in a split Congress MWi^_d]jed Dear voter: Want to know why Democrats and Republicans in Congress find it so hard to work together to solve tough problems like the debt ceiling, health care and Social Security? Look in the mirror. Americans gripe about cowardly, self-serving politicians, and Congress doubtlessly has its feckless moments and members. But voters are quick to overlook their own role in legislative impasses that keep the nation from resolving such big, festering problems as immigration and now, the debt ceiling. Here’s the truth: The majority of senators and House members do what their constituents want them to do. Or, more to the point, they respond to people in their dis-
tricts who bother to vote. Nothing is dearer to politicians than re-election. For a growing number of senators and representatives, the only risk is in their parties’ primaries, not in the general election. Most voters ignore primaries. That gives control to a relative handful of motivated, hard-core liberals and fullbore conservatives. Many House districts today aren’t politically balanced, thanks largely to gerrymandering and Americans’ inclination to live and work near people who share their views and values. The result: districts so conservative that no GOP nominee can possibly lose, or so liberal that any Democratic nominee is certain to win. In these districts, the primary is the whole ballgame. So who turns up on Capitol Hill for freshman orientation? Democrats and Republicans who can barely comprehend each other’s political viewpoints, let alone embrace them in pursuit of a compromise. But what if a Republican and
M^Wj 9ekbZ >Wff[d5 Life might get more difficult for many Americans if Congress doesn’t reach a deal to raise the government’s borrowing limit. Experts disagree on when such a default would occur or how long it would last, but the impact could be wide-reaching: Monthly budgets might take a hit. To avoid a default, the Treasury would have to prioritize payments, endangering the estimated 80 million checks the U.S. pays each month, including 56 million for Social Security beneficiaries. It might become more difficult to get a job. With less money coursing through the economy, consumers might cut spending. That would give businesses even less confidence to hire people. It could become costlier to get a loan. If the U.S. defaults, investors would demand the Treasury pay a higher interest rate. That would up interest rates on mortgage loans, home equity lines of credit and car loans. (THE WASHINGTON POST )
Democrat do decide to meet halfway in hopes of finding, say, a path to shore up Social Security for decades to come. What can they expect? In some states and districts, they can expect to be drummed out of their party for the crime of engaging with “the enemy.” Tea party leaders spell out a warning in their periodic Washington rallies. “The message is that we’re watching, and we want you to vote based on our core values,” Mark Meckler, a co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, said at one event. Such threats are mainly aimed at Republicans for now, largely because of the tea party’s rise. But Democratic lawmakers also know liberal discontent might undo them if they stray too far to the center. Except for a recently appointed senator from Nevada, every member of Congress got there the same way: American voters elected them. People may bristle at the notion that we get the government we deserve. But there’s no denying we get the government we elect. CHARLES BABINGTON (AP)
“We might as well do it now,” President Obama admonished a few weeks back, urging Congress to raise the federal debt limit. “Pull off the BandAid, eat our peas.” Tea party activists were happy to fling the metaphor right back at the White House. “Eat your own peas!” read a tea party sign at a Capitol Hill rally. House Speaker John Boehner made his own culinary contribution to the debate when he complained negotiating with the White House was like “dealing with Jell-O.” The Republican National Committee liked it so much it gave the president a new title: “His Jello-Ness.”
7j j^[ Cel_[i House Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy tried to rally GOP support by playing lawmakers a clip of the bank-robber film “The Town,” in which Ben Affleck tells an ally: “I need your help. ... We’re gonna hurt some people.” White House press secretary Jay Carney countered with a cringe-worthy film analogy of his own, harking back to the 1982 movie “Sophie’s Choice,” in which a Jewish woman must choose which of her two children should be saved from a Nazi death camp. Mardy Fish reacts after winning the singles final against John Isner at the Atlanta Tennis Championships on July 24. Both players will participate in the Legg Mason Classic.

25. Bjorn Borg retired at 26. Four months shy of turning 30, Mardy Fish is playing the best tennis of his life. He’s learning — 12 years into a career that until recently boasted far more potential than achievement — no amount of success is enough. J[dd_i With each goal Fish reaches, he sets a higher one — the satisfaction proving more fleeting than the nagging hunger to find out what he’s truly capable of.
<_hij 9bWii Heading into Washington’s Legg Mason Tennis Classic, Fish has achieved a string of “firsts” this season. After a dozen years of trying, he broke into the top 10, vaulting ahead of Andy Roddick — the two are as close as brothers — to claim the mantle of top-ranked American. In June, he reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, notching
his first victory over a top-10 player in a major (2010 runner-up Tomas Berdych) before falling to two-time champion Rafael Nadal. And earlier this month he beat John Isner to defend his title at Atlanta — the first time he’d claimed back-to-back championships. On Saturday, Fish advanced to the final of the hard-court tournament in Los Angeles with a victory over Ryan Harrison. Sunday’s final ended after Express’ deadline.

But the longer he sustains his top10 form, the more convinced Fish is that his improved play is a result of his mental transformation more than his physical one. “Physically, I definitely needed to change some things, get fit and get in position where I could be consistent without injury, and I’ve put in a lot of work to stay fit,” Fish said. “But [mentally] showing up for every match and every tournament was something I wasn’t very good at. I am now. I’m much more driven now and much more focused. I make the right decisions now during tournaments and before tournaments.” That means adhering to a scrupulous diet, not eating after 6:30 p.m., drinking copious fluids, sleeping eight to 10 hours each night and ordering room service when his pals on tour are heading out for dinner and good times. “There are a lot of things I’d like to do when I come to D.C. — go to a Nationals game and have fun — but it might not be the best thing for me,” said Fish, a scratch golfer who once blasted a 370foot home run during batting practice with the New York Mets. “I’d rather put in an extra hour on the practice court.” LIZ CL ARK E (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Dramatic Day Ends With a Win After learning he’s staying put, Storen is bailed out in 9th
With the passing of the trade deadline, here’s a list of the Nats’ moves over the past week.
Seventeen minutes after Sunday’s trade deadline, Drew Storen slapped a ball into his glove and emerged from the bullpen gates at Nationals Park, right where he wanted to be. Storen hoped to remain with Nationals amid swirling trade rumors, and now here he was, the only pressure on him, at last, derived from closing a onerun baseball game. After several stressful days, Storen felt relief when the deadline passed and then sudden, momentary pain as the home run he allowed tied the game in the top of the ninth. In the bottom half, Rick Ankiel bailed him out and delivered a 3-2, walk-off victory over the New York Mets by dashing home from third on Ian Desmond’s weak chopper over the pitcher’s mound. Storen did not get the save. He could settle for a win vultured from Jordan Zimmermann, who bounced back from two subpar starts with six scoreless innings. The Nationals scored their first two runs in the sixth inning on three consecutive doubles by Desmond, Jordan Zimmermann and Michael Morse.

Albert Haynesworth at the Pats’ practice.
Haynesworth On the Field With Patriots Fhe <eejXWbb Albert Haynesworth’s first practice with the New England Patriots was uneventful — other than the fact he was on the field just a couple days into training camp. Haynesworth made his Patriots debut during a walkthrough Sunday, then donned his pads for limited contact drills in the afternoon. Whereas he was just an observer in the morning, Haynesworth blasted through the offensive line deep into the backfield on a couple of plays. He also got his share of rest after lumbering up and down the practice field in the afternoon heat. The fact that he was out there at all was a positive sign for the Patriots, who picked up the defensive lineman in a trade with the Redskins. Haynesworth missed the early part of training camp last year with the Redskins after repeatedly failing his conditioning test. (AP)

In 1863, in a move that may have been orchestrated by Barnum, Vinnie married Charles Stratton —
The
El Centro D.F. (1819 14th St. NW), the newish taqueria in midcity, is stepping up its weekend presence (beyond just being a place that serves tacos late at night next to the Black Cat) with a new bottomless tequila brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. For $35, you get multiple servings of a fixed menu — including Mexican brunch staples such as enchiladas, enfrijoladas and tamales con huevos — and unlimited morning cocktails. Brunch lasts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but the last seating is at 2, if you need motivation to get out of bed.

If perspective is everything for a writer, then sharing the vertical vantage point of your subject must be an advantage. Just ask Melanie Benjamin, the author of “The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb” ($25, Delacourte Press). Benjamin’s historical novel retells the story of Mercy Lavinia “Vinnie” Warren Bump, who Benjamin was just 2 feet, 8 inches tall. “I’ve been called ‘Shorty’ all my life,” laughs Benjamin. “I’m 5’1” on a good day.” Vinnie’s life, as described by Benjamin (who also reimagined the titular heroine of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice and Wonderland” for her 2010 best-seller “Alice I Have Been”), will fascinate readers of all sizes. Raised by a loving family in Massachusetts, Vinnie worked briefly as a schoolteacher until she left home to sing on a showboat in the Midwest. Returning home, she reached out to P.T. Barnum, who agreed to showcase her as a “perfectly formed woman in miniature” at his legendary American Museum in New York.
mony — attended by Vanderbilts and Astors — temporarily trumped reports on the Civil War. Unlike Vinnie’s real and guarded autobiography (which Benjamin consulted as part of her research for the book), this oftenhumorous tale provides insight into Vinnie’s thoughts and feelings in an era when her size was seen as her defining characteristic. She was highly intelligent and incredibly cunning when it came to her career as a staged curiosity, Benjamin says. “She actively sought her fame and traded on her size in order to see the world and live life,” Benjamin says. “But she blurred that line between her private life and whatever her real life was. I don’t think she could figure out which was which, in a way.” As one of her generation’s most famous figures, Vinnie was both marginalized and influential. Benjamin compares her tiny heroine to today’s reality TV stars, “people who aren’t famous because they’re talented but because their lives are odd and different.” Talk about a grounded perspective. July has been “Rickey Month” here for a few years now — it’s D.C.’s official cocktail as of this year. The gin, lime and soda drink is getting the same treatment it gets every summer from city bartenders, who have been featuring their unique takes on the rickey for the past month. (Actually, to make things more complicated, you can also make a rickey with bourbon if you 8o <_edW feel a heavier cocktail PkXb_d is in order.) Tonight it all comes to a head at Jack Rose (2007 18th St. NW), where six local bartenders will take over different areas of the restaurant to create their homages to the rickey. Admission is $10; your first drink is on the house, and cocktails are $10 each thereafter. The six variations will compete to be named the year’s best rickey. You’ve gotta love the embarrassment of rickeys, but whose idea was it to have this party on a Monday night?
The historical novel ‘Mrs. Tom Thumb’ examines the life of an early reality star

M^eÊi J^Wj =_hb5 F[hiedWb_j_[i Emma Stone has gone from layperson to expert on the two publishing sensations she’s helping to bring to Hollywood this summer and next. Stone had not read Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help” before auditioning for the lead role in the drama about a white woman who rocks the Deep South establishment by chronicling the hard lives of black maids in the early 1960s. “The Help” is expected to be a summer hit driven by the bestseller’s female fans, a rarity in a season dominated by action tales and comedies. And before earning the female lead in “The Amazing Spider-Man,” Stone knew the Marvel Comics superhero mainly from Sam Raimi’s three past big-screen “Spidey” adventures and glimpses of the web-slinger on memorabilia.
“I knew Spidey from Halloween costumes and Band-Aids and erasers and pencils and notebooks,” Stone, 22, said in an interview at last month’s Comic-Con fan convention, where she and star Andrew Garfield joined the filmmakers to reveal footage of the 2012 summer blockbuster-in-waiting. Stone has been on a steady rise in Hollywood, co-starring in 2007’s teen romp “Superbad” and 2009’s horror comedy “Zombieland,” then charming audiences with her first big-screen lead in last year’s “Scarlet Letter” twist “Easy A.” After supporting roles in backto-back romantic comedies with last week’s “Friends With Benefits” and this week’s “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” Stone’s profile shoots higher with the Aug. 10 debut of “The Help,” costarring Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard and Octavia Spencer. “I knew that every little boy at school was obsessed with Spidey. I saw all the Sam Raimi movies, but I had not read the comics until I got involved. And now I’m a ridiculously enormous ‘Spider-Man’ fan.”

Although he expects Fall Out Boy to come together again in the future, Patrick Stump says his solo career — which includes the EP “Truant Wave” and the upcoming album “Soul Punk” — will be a primary concern. “I do have a lot of records I want to put out,” Stump says. “I’m always going to be doing it.” Stump For the initial gambits of “Soul Punk,” which is due in October, Stump is showing off an R&B-flavored style showing the acknowledged influence of artists such as Prince and Michael Jackson, among others. It’s music Stump didn’t record with Fall Out Boy because, he explains, “This is a lot more of a distillation of my influences, and [the band] is supposed to be a combination of all of our influences.” GARY GR AFF (BILLBOARD.COM)

Mellow Out Bon Iver has somehow achieved indie stardom while simultaneously making bank by being on the soundtrack of a “Twilight” movie, so, clearly, the band’s mellow acoustic music has wide appeal. Funkadelic The CSC Funk Band brings together 10 or so musicians who’ve been playing all manner of punk and noise rock. The ensemble, which includes an oboe, doesn’t sound thrown together at all — in fact, as funk ensembles go, it’s remarkably disciplined, but still loose enough to dance to. But even if you know the twist, it’s still a great, scary, atmospheric film — keep your eyes peeled for a very young Mischa Barton, by the way — that’s screening in Arlington Monday night. 1851 S. Ethan Hawke tries to put the star in Starbuck in Encore’s adaptation of “Moby Dick” as John Hurt plays a calmer Captain Ahab.

JWc_d] e\ j^[ 9h[m Encore pulls the reins back on Ahab for its version of ‘Moby Dick’ C_d_i[h_[i Some books you just have .0&& to read. Like F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” Herman Melville’s “Moby ;D9EH;
Dick” has suffered any number of unsatisfying screen adaptations. A book so filled with strange ruminations and poetry just doesn’t hold up when boiled down for action. Encore’s two-night miniseries (8 p.m., concludes Tues.) tries to domesticate Captain Ahab (John Hurt), supplying him with a wife (Gillian Anderson) and a precocious son. Look for Ethan Hawke as
Starbuck. The always intense Eddie Marsan (“Little Dorrit,” “HappyGo-Lucky”) plays Stubb, and Raoul Trujillo (“Apocalypto”) is the mystical Queequeg. Charlie Cox plays the novel’s narrator, and when you hear him say, “Call me Ishmael” to Pip (Daniyah Ysrayl) in an opening scene, you know this miniseries is not off to a promising start. MOST-HATED CLOTHING ITEM: Her romper; his “painter-style jeans he wears far more than he should.” PET NAMES: They call each other “Nug,” which they picked up from an episode of “Family Guy.”
BWkh[d CYAemd" A[l_d LWii_]^_ Lauren, 27, is getting her Ph.D. in anthropology. Kevin, 29, works on homeland security issues for the government. They live in D.C. THE MAIN EVENT: Aug. 6 in the District. Lauren’s minister, the Methodist chaplain at American University, will officiate. HOW THEY MET: At the gym. “I had been trying to get Lauren’s attention for months, but her iPod was my biggest enemy,” Kevin says. “Finally, I just yelled out as loud as possible, ‘I like your pants!’” FIRST IMPRESSIONS: “This guy has guts.” FIRST DATE: The Skydome lounge at the DoubleTree in Arlington. “It was perfect, except it happened to be amateur karaoke night. We just laughed.” HOW HE PROPOSED: He took her back to the Skydome. CELEBRATING HERITAGE: The couple will bind their hands in Lauren’s family’s tartan during the ceremony. Kevin’s half-Persian, so they will have a Sofreh-ye Aghd, a table full of symbolic items that represent a happy marriage. WITH INFINITE FUNDS: Kevin: “We would have flown everyone we knew on a suborbital spaceflight.”

“Terrorist, yes. Christian terrorist, no. He claims that he specifically did what he did because of Muslims and not Jews, Hindus or any other religious group. “There is a lot to like about Shark Week, particularly in the nature footage. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Jump to conclusions and you’re likely to find yourself retracing your steps again and again. The efficient choice is to remain patient. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Don’t let your imagination run away with you, or there will surely be something to be afraid of that is really simply a ghost. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You must watch what you say, or you will have to pay for something that was not at all intentional. Weigh your words with care. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Though you are working closely with others, what’s most valuable to you is the time you spend sorting things out alone.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) It may be premature to comment on the details as you see them, but you can surely share your impressions of the big picture. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’re wishing for something that cannot, under any circumstances, come to pass, though that can’t stop you from wishing further. I was trying to question things in life so you find these characters that help you find things and grow.” She added, “as Brad and I get older we’re going to do fewer films. We’ve had a nice run and don’t want to be doing this our whole lives.” (EXPRESS)
