The sale of a Delaware pet cemetery is up in the air after it was discovered that one pet owner made it her final resting place, too. Workers clearing brush found the headstone of “Ms. Ligon” and her pet collie, “Lady.” It is believed the ashes of sculptor Maurine Ligon were scattered there in 1980. State law allows the sale of land with buried pets but not human remains, unless their remains will be forever protected. That’s difficult with scattered ashes. (AP)

A prankster’s changes to the message on an electronic roadside sign in Buffalo may be making motorists smile, but police aren’t amused. Someone accessed the keyboard on a sign along Route 198 on Monday and changed it to read: “It’s All A Dream.” The same sign flashed “I Love You” on Tuesday before crews shut it down. Police say tampering with road signs is illegal and poses a potentially dangerous distraction for drivers. (AP)

An elderly German woman who filled in spaces in an art piece depicting a crossword puzzle was completing the piece, not ruining it, her lawyer contends. Officials at Nuremberg’s Neues Museum filed a criminal complaint after the 90-year-old, who hasn’t been named, last month filled in blank spaces with a ballpoint pen on artist Arthur Koepcke’s 1965 work. She apparently took literally the phrase “Insert Words” at the edge of the picture. (AP)

CELEBRATIONS If there’s one thing the sharply divided nation can agree on after nearly eight years of President Barack Obama, it is that things have changed on his watch. Most notably, his appearance. Even the president has noticed. Opening his speech at the Democratic National Convention last week, he praised his wife Michelle, the 52-year-old first lady, who “somehow hasn’t aged a day.” “I know the same cannot be said for me,” Obama continued with a chuckle. Twelve years after a wunderkind 42-year-old Illinois state senator burst onto the national scene with a youthful vigor and forward-looking exuberance, the president’s once-black hair has gone nearly fully gray. The creases around his mouth and under his eyes have grown deeper. “My girls remind me all the time: ‘Wow, you’ve changed so much, Daddy,’ ” he said. “And then they try to clean it up. Not bad, just more mature.” Today, the 44th president is turning 55.

Gray hair, wrinkles don’t bother Obama for his last birthday in office

Over his eight years in office, Barack Obama’s appearance has grown “more mature,” as his daughters told him.

It’s his final birthday in office, and it comes at a time when Obama is acknowledging that his own political shelf life is winding down. Though mid-50s is young for an outgoing commander-inchief, and he will presumably enjoy a long, active post-presidency, Obama has grown increasingly wistful in his final year. “It’s true, I was so young that first time in Boston,” he said last week, reflecting on the speech at the 2004 convention that helped launch his political ascent.

For Obama, the gray hair is so obvious that it has become part of his stump speech, a way to disarm his audience by poking fun at himself. But by other measures, he has remained fit and vibrant. Once a smoker, the president remains tobacco-free and drinks alcohol only in moderation; his bad cholesterol is low and his good cholesterol is high, a physical exam found in March. “All clinical data indicates that the President is currently

very healthy and that he will remain so for the duration of his Presidency,” his doctor, Ronny Jackson, concluded. Today, the president is scheduled to hold a private briefing with his national security team at the Pentagon, followed by a news conference, before departing on his annual two-week vacation to Martha’s Vineyard on Friday. White House officials declined to say whether he was planning any birthday celebration. DAVID NAKAMURA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Metro officer accused of trying to help ISIS

ELLICOTT CITY, MD.

Buildings are in danger of post-flood collapse

Official says there was no credible or specific threat to transit system

PABLO MARTINEZ MONSIVAIS (AP)

VIRGINIA Prosecutors brought the firstever federal terrorism charges against a law enforcement officer in the U.S., alleging Wednesday that a patrol officer with Metro’s transit police bought about $250 worth of gift cards for someone he thought was working with the Islamic State group. Nicholas Young, 36, of Fairfax, was arrested Wednesday at Metro Transit Police headquarters in D.C. and charged with a single count of attempting to provide material support to a terrorist group. According to an FBI affidavit, Young bought gift cards last month that he intended for the Islamic State to use to purchase mobile messaging apps. Young actually gave the codes for the gift cards to an undercover FBI officer, the affidavit said. He made a brief court appearance Wednesday afternoon. David Smith, who was appointed to represent Young after the hearing, said he could not comment because he had not yet been able to research the details of the case. If convicted, Young could face up to 20 years in prison. Young had been under surveillance since 2010, and he traveled

to Libya at least once in 2011, where he said he joined rebel forces seeking to oust dictator Moammar Gadhafi, the affidavit said. He traveled with body armor, a Kevlar helmet and other military-style items. Young was deeply paranoid about law enforcement spying on him, often taking out the battery of his cellphone when he wanted to go somewhere and talk, the document said. Young frequently told one undercover source to be wary of potential informants, according to the affidavit. Joshua Stueve, spokesman for the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said Young posed no threat to the Metro system, and nowhere in the affidavit does it mention the subway and bus system.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said Young, who had been employed since 2003, was fired. “Obviously, the allegations in this case are profoundly disturbing. They’re disturbing to me, and they’re disturbing to everyone who wears the uniform,” Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said in a statement. FBI spokesman Andrew Ames confirmed that Young is the first law enforcement officer to be charged under the federal government’s terrorism law. Authorities said that in their years of monitoring Young, his purchase of the gift cards was the first action that crossed the line to where he could be charged with a crime, and they moved to arrest him as soon as it occurred. A criticalcare nurse who stopped to help at a pre-dawn crash scene on an I-70 bridge near Frederick thought she’d be crossing a median when she jumped over a concrete barrier. Instead, she found herself airborne, plunging at least 100 feet into the river. Angela Weir, above, 47, was pulled from the Monocacy River by emergency responders and flown to the University of Maryland Medical System shock trauma unit in Baltimore, where she works. She was discharged within a few hours. “She probably didn’t even think about how safe it would be to go over there,” her brother William Floria said. the derailment at the East Falls Church station was caused by a defect known as “wide gauge,” in which the rails of the tracks are too far apart and cause wheels to lose contact with the rails. Bug spray companies profiting off Zika fears

SLEEP STUDY

Being afraid of dark may affect health

HEALTH Worried you might catch the Zika virus? Scammers and bug spray companies are counting on it. Marketers know this is the time to pounce: The summer Olympics are about to start in Brazil, where the recent Zika epidemic started, and 14 mosquito-borne cases of Zika were identified recently in the Miami area, the first in the U.S. So companies and entrepreneurs are capitalizing on Zika fears, hawking questionable products and promoting all manner of mosquito repellents. “From a marketing point of view, it’s a golden opportunity,” said Jonathan Day, a University of Florida mosquito expert and researcher. Pharmacies in New York City, for example, have Off! displays warning consumers to “Repel the mosquitoes that may carry the Zika virus.” The tropical mosquito responsible for the Zika epidemic, called Aedes aegypti, is not found in New York, though state health officials still recommend that people use bug spray. Some enterprising marketers are rebranding products as Zika fighters. Citronella-infused stickers that adhere to clothing and supposedly repel mosquitoes for three days. Experts say to stick with what works, like products with DEET. And that’s what most people are buying, whether they are near Zika-carrying mosquitoes or not. Off! maker SC Johnson has ramped up production, the company says. Spectrum Brands Inc. said retailers have seen sales double over last year’s for its repellent brands, Cutter and Repel. It’s also boosted production, and now mentions Zika on its repellent. “We don’t want to scare consumers,” brand manager Ashley Henderson says. “We want to empower them.” LINDA A. JOHNSON (AP)

A new study conducted in the Netherlands found that leaving the light on while sleeping might speed aging and lead to other health problems, Quartz reports. Researchers at Leiden University recently exposed more than 100 mice to artificial light constantly for 24 weeks. A control group faced normal day/night light cycles. The researchers determined that those mice always under the bulb experienced a shift in their body clock in which they’d feel tired 90 minutes later than the previous day. Scientists noted that such a shift is a common aspect of aging, in both mice and humans. The light-exposed mice also experienced reduced bone density and weakened muscles. (EXPRESS)

‘A new level of panic’ RNC chairman Priebus is ‘very frustrated’ by Trump’s behavior during the past week WASHINGTONPOST.COM POST POLITICS

Small donors help Trump raise $82 million

Trump has been lunging from one controversy to another, skipping chances to attack rival Clinton.

The Washington Post to endorse House Speaker Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin or Arizona Sen. John McCain — two of the party’s top elected officials — in their primary campaigns. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, one of Trump’s most loyal defenders, warned that his friend was in danger of throwing away the election. “The current race is which of these two is the more unacceptable, because right now neither of them is acceptable,” Gingrich said. “Trump is helping [Clinton] win by proving he is more unacceptable than she is.” Gingrich said Trump has only a matter of weeks to reverse course.

“People are more frustrated than they have been with past indiscretions. … People are just going, ‘Can you believe this?’ ” RNC MEMBER STEVE DUPREY, saying GOP leaders are “pretty unhappy”

“Anybody who is horrified by Hillary should hope that Trump will take a deep breath and learn some new skills,” he said. Reed, who managed Bob Dole’s

1996 presidential campaign, recommended that Trump “stop doing silly interviews nine times a day that get you off message” and deliver a major address seeking to reset the campaign, establishing himself as the change candidate. Reports that senior Republicans were planning an intervention by Gingrich, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and other Trump loyalists to try to settle the candidate were dismissed by campaign chairman Paul Manafort. He told Fox News, “This is the first I’m hearing about that.” He said the campaign is “focused,” in “very good shape” and “moving forward.” PHILIP RUCKER AND DAN BALZ (THE WASHINGTON POST)

As Donald Trump holds off on endorsing House Speaker Paul D. Ryan in Wisconsin’s Republican primary, the presidential candidate’s running mate enthusiastically endorsed Ryan on Wednesday. “I strongly support Paul Ryan, strongly endorse his re-election,” Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, left, said on Fox News. Trump has angered his party’s leadership by refusing to endorse Ryan or Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in their primary campaigns. POLITICS The Republican Party was in turmoil again Wednesday as party leaders, strategists and donors voiced increasing alarm about the flailing state of Donald Trump’s candidacy and fears that the presidential nominee was damaging the party with an extraordinary week of selfinflicted mistakes. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus was described as “very frustrated” and stressed by Trump’s behavior over the past week, having run out of excuses to make on the nominee’s behalf with donors and other party leaders, according to multiple people familiar with the events. Meanwhile, Trump’s top campaign advisers are failing to instill discipline on their candidate, who has spent the past days lunging from one controversy to another while seemingly skipping chances to go on the offensive against his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton. “A new level of panic hit the street,” said veteran operative Scott Reed, chief strategist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “It’s time for a serious reset.” Trump allies on Wednesday publicly urged the candidate to reboot, furious that he has allowed his confrontation with the parents of dead U.S. Army captain Humayun Khan to continue for nearly a week. They also are angry with Trump over his surprising refusal in a Tuesday interview with

GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump was buoyed by an enthusiastic base of small donors in July, helping him raise $82 million in conjunction with the Republican National Committee, the campaign announced Wednesday. Of that, $64 million came in the form of donations contributed online and through direct mail solicitations, the campaign said. Another $16 million was raised through 20 pricey fundraising events held in conjunction with the RNC. In addition, Trump personally contributed $2 million to his campaign, for a total haul of $82 million for the month. In comparison, Hillary Clinton pulled in $90 million with the Democratic National Committee last month, including $63 million for her campaign. Trump’s fundraising has expanded since June, when his campaign and the RNC brought in $52.3 million. Thirty percent of the money raised that month came from 60 mega-donors, who each gave at least $100,000, a Washington Post analysis found. In July, however, Trump saw a surge in small-dollar contributions — a phenomenon that campaign officials say persisted throughout the month. “This is not just a convention bounce,” said Steven Mnuchin, Trump’s finance chairman. “There is ground-level support for Donald Trump unlike any other Republican before.” MATEA GOLD

If confirmed, this would constitute the first time a North Korean missile had landed within Japan’s economic zone on the Sea of Japan side of the island chain. “It imposes a serious threat to Japan’s security and it is an unforgivable act of violence toward Japan’s security,” Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said. Wednesday’s actions were

the latest apparent protest from North Korea over a decision by Seoul and Washington to bring an anti-missile battery system to South Korea. The United Nations Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting Wednesday in response to a request by the United States and Japan. The medium-range Rodong missile splashed down inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, within 125 miles of the country’s northwest coast, Japan’s Defense Ministry said. In flight time, that meant the missile was only 20 or 30 seconds

Hometown catch: Vernon Davis still has ‘juice’ at 32 But nostalgia won’t keep Davis on a roster well stocked with tight ends. He must find a role in a group that includes emerging talent Jordan Reed, Niles Paul, who is logging time at fullback, Logan Paulsen, a veteran stalwart in the running game, and Derek Carrier, who began camp on the physically unable to perform list. At 32, Davis can still be valuable. At an age when most tight ends have lost a step, he’s found an edge with dedicated workout and nutrition programs. He believes he will find his opportunities over the course of the season. “When it comes to competing, I’m all about it,” he said. “You have to have that. You come out here and compete. Try to stand out. If I couldn’t play, I’d go sit down.” There’s no uncertainty in coach Jay Gruden when asked about Davis, either. “I have seen enough of Vernon Davis to know that he’s still got a lot of juice left,” Gruden said. “Knowing Vernon, the way he plays, one of

JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Vernon Davis never expected to play for the team he rooted for as a child in Washington. After three standout seasons at Maryland, the tight end was drafted to the opposite coast in San Francisco, where he was chosen sixth overall in 2006. Then he was traded last season to Denver, where he won a Super Bowl as a backup. As a free agent this year, Davis signed a one-year deal with the Redskins in April. Suddenly, he was back where he began. “Being home is a great thing,” he said. “Growing up as a Redskins fan, it means a lot to play for this organization. But, at the end of the day, football is football.” The former Dunbar High star has been one of the NFL’s elite tight ends with 461 catches and 55 touchdowns over 10 seasons. He caught a career-high 13 touchdowns in 2009 and 2013, earning Pro Bowl honors in both years.

his strengths is in-line blocking. … He’s a big, strong man, and we also know he can run. He has shown that speed still. He can fly.” Learning his third offense in the past year doesn’t intimidate him. Davis played in five schemes with the 49ers. “It’s fun to learn a new playbook,” he said. “It’s a challenge. You learn to embrace it.” Davis has always been a bit of a Renaissance man. He studied studio art at Maryland and recently discovered his grandfather was an artist. Davis opened an interior design

When he’s ready to retire, Davis plans to live in L.A. and pursue acting. He’s already had a series of small roles and said he has a cameo appearance in the upcoming “Baywatch” movie with Dwayne Johnson. “Life is all about the unexpected,” Davis said. MLB When the Nationals’ managerial job opened last fall, Dusty Baker wanted it. But there was a unique hurdle to this pursuit: He felt he had to call his good friend Matt Williams and ask his permission, because Williams was the manager who had been fired after a roller-coaster two-year tenure. “I didn’t want him to think I did anything behind his back and back-stab him because I wouldn’t do that,” Baker said. “Before I do that, I’d stay at home.” Williams urged Baker to seek the position. Friendships, he believes, go beyond employment and he knew Baker wanted to chase a championship. On Monday, at the start of the

The Nationals replaced Matt Williams, above, with his friend Dusty Baker.

Nationals-Diamondbacks series, the two saw each other for the first time since they began the season in their new roles. Williams, 50, is now Arizona’s third base coach, a position he held before his Nationals stint. Arizona has been his home for 30 years. He ended his playing career with six seasons on the Diamondbacks.

It was a perfect fit. “We’ve been involved with this organization for a long time as a family, and I’m proud to be here,” Williams said Tuesday in Phoenix. He said there were many takeaways from his time in the District — one being it’s difficult to win and grind through

the season — but he doesn’t let thoughts of his tenure linger. He acknowledged he would like to manage again if presented the opportunity, but emphasized that isn’t his goal. He simply wants to coach and be part of a game. “I love putting on the uniform and hitting a fungo and throwing batting practice and being a part of it,” Williams said. Williams and Baker became friends in 1988 with the Giants. Williams was in his second majorleague season as a promising third baseman. Baker was in his first year as a coach and later became hitting instructor. Their relationship was cultivated in batting cages. Then Baker became the Giants’ manager in 1993. “You’re not supposed to have favorites,” Baker said of the players he has coached or managed, “but he’s one of my favorites.”

When you cast your vote for president in November, don’t forget that you’re also voting for the president’s spouse, says Andrew Och,

author of “Unusual for Their Time: On the Road With America’s First Ladies.” Och, who will discuss first ladies at a Smithsonian Associates talk Wednesday, says that even those first ladies who stay out of the limelight help shape their partner’s policies. “The first lady is arguably the most powerful unelected woman in the world,” he says. “Even Bess Truman, one of the quietest and seemingly uninvolved first ladies, was in on some very serious military and political decisions.” We asked Och which potential first spouse, Bill Clinton or Melania Trump, would be better suited to the various tasks that traditionally fall to the first lady — or gentleman — of the United States. Since he’s an older guy with an unremarkable dressing style, Bill Clinton is unlikely to inspire new directions in menswear, Och says.

Increasing spouse’s likability Melania has the potential to help improve her husband’s image as a misogynist, but Donald Trump’s tendency to publicly objectify women gets in the way, Och says.

Bill is seen as an affable, fun guy. That could help Hillary Clinton, who is often viewed as tough and unrelatable, Och says. “People might say, ‘You know what? Bill’s a good guy, so maybe Hillary’s not so bad after all.’ ”

“Cheers to not being one of those suckers standing in line!”

Ride the heat wave to these restaurants If the heat has you wary of standing in line at some of D.C.’s, ahem, hottest restaurants, there’s good news and bad news. The good news: The hopping dining scene has gotten noticeably quieter during the summer. The bad news: That doesn’t mean you can stroll right into Bad Saint at 8 p.m. on a Friday. With the following tips, though, you can take advantage of the slight summer lull and keep waits to a minimum. BECKY KRYSTAL (THE WASHINGTON POST) Rose’s Luxury

Little Serow

Bad Saint

717 Eighth St. SE

1511 17th St. NW

3226 11th St. NW

At Rose’s Luxury, where would-be diners are known to queue for hours, owner Aaron Silverman said the Barracks Row restaurant is seeing shorter lines: With the weather, things have been “definitely a tad quieter.” So, time to give it a try? If you’re game, Silverman said you have a very good chance of being seated right away if you show up with your whole party when the restaurant opens at 5 p.m. Rose’s also takes reservations for group dinners (six to eight people) and its rooftop garden (eight to 12 people).

Anne Marler, co-owner of Little Serow with her husband, chef Johnny Monis, said the tiny Thai restaurant near Dupont Circle has been staying busy, “but it seems like the threat of having to wait in line on Fridays especially has more guests checking in toward the middle of the evening.” Her tip: Avoid long waits in the heat by dining early (5:30 p.m.) or late (9 to 9:30 p.m.). Lines are also generally shorter Tuesdays through Thursdays before 6 p.m. or after 8:30 p.m.

Co-owner Genevieve Villamora said weekend lines have been a bit shorter sometimes — but at other times, they’re the same as they usually are. “We have seen some long lines in the worst weather,” she said. Her recommendation for getting into the cozy Filipino spot in Columbia Heights: Arrive on Wednesdays or Thursdays before 6 p.m. or after 8:45 p.m.

Daikaya Georgetown Cupcake

705 Sixth St. NW

3301 M St. NW

This summer, the popular Chinatown eatery has seen a slight decrease in the waits to get into its first-floor ramen shop. Don’t forget that the upstairs izakaya (with a different menu) takes reservations; you can bide your time with snacks and drinks there until you get into the ramen shop. (Worst-case scenario: You can also walk around the corner to Daikaya’s new sister shop serving chicken ramen, Bantam King.)

Co-founder Sophie LaMontagne says lines are as long as ever at the always-popular bakery. (In times of very hot weather, employees will hand out ice water to customers standing in line.) But LaMontagne suggests one strategy that has caught on with locals during the heat wave: Order online, skip the wait and pick up at your specified time. Or opt for delivery.

Vin & Vic’s 229 Pennsylvania Ave.

Fans of Vin & Vic’s, the pop-up providing Chicago-style pizza at Capitol Lounge on Friday and Saturday nights, know to arrive around happy hour to snag one of the limited number of deep-dish pies. But in late July, pizzas were still available at 9 p.m. In the summer, owner Tom Madrecki says, “there’s always a noticeable downturn in business on the Hill,” because members of Congress are back in their home districts. If you haven’t tried one of his pizzas, this might be the time to do it.

Every last ounce of summer

Grab a bite at a farmers market The USDA has hosted a farmers market for more than two decades, and it’s a perfect example of what this urban staple can be. Every Friday through October, there’s a fivehour daytime session with almost a dozen farmers and vendors selling fresh produce, prepared meals and everything from local seafood and kettle corn to dog biscuits and kimchi. Through September, there’s an additional night session with extra vendors, food trucks, live music and such activities as yoga and pet adoptions. Another lunchtime market popular with downtown worker bees? The White House FreshFarm Market, where you can snack on kati rolls from Yoga in a Bowl and pizza from Red Zebra. B.K.

SPEND YOUR FINAL WEEKS OF PEAK SUMMER MAKING THE MOST OF THE WEATHER, THE SCENERY AND THE FREE OUTDOOR EVENTS Summer is worth savoring, but it always seems to end before you know it. With precious few weeks of peak summer left, work your way through this bucket list, a roundup of recommendations for enjoying the water, the frozen treats, the great outdoors and more — while you still can. (EXPRESS AND THE WASHINGTON POST)

Pamper yourself at a hotel’s rooftop pool Instead of going to a crowded D.C. public pool at peak hours, splurge on a day pass at a local hotel pool. At the Liaison hotel on Capitol Hill, non-guests pay $35 to use the rooftop pool facilities from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, which covers swimming and sun loungers. (Pro tip: The pool is free and open to all at happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m.) In Dupont Circle, the Embassy Row Hotel doesn’t have as much of a social scene, but the comfortable day beds and excellent views, sweeping from the National Cathedral to Arlington, make up for it. A pass costs $30 per day on weekends and weekdays from noon to 6 p.m., except on Fridays, when admission is free after 2 p.m. FRITZ HAHN

Liaison, 415 New Jersey Ave. NW Embassy Row Hotel, 2015 Massachusetts Ave. NW

Fill up at a food truck event Food trucks are a year-round option in D.C., but when the weather’s warm, they come out in full force. Truckeroo, now in its fifth year, brings more than 20 food trucks into the shipping-container-chic Fairgrounds near Nationals Park six Fridays each spring and summer. Get there for lunch or dinner, or stay all day, as bands and beverages keep the party going till late in the evening. On a smaller scale, Farragut Fridays run through September in Farragut Square. Food trucks gather daily, but on Fridays, the Golden Triangle BID brings out tables and chairs, cornhole decks and portable shaded “outdoor office” areas that encourage lingering. JOHN TAYLOR Truckeroo, Fairgrounds, 1299 Half St. SE; Aug. 19 & Sept. 16, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Farragut Fridays, Farragut Park, Connecticut Avenue and K Street NW; Fridays through Sept. 30, noon-2 p.m.

Have a splash — and a spray — in a park

USDA Farmers Market, 12th Street and Independence Avenue SW; Fridays through Oct. 28, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. & Fridays through Sept. 30, 4-7 p.m.

Water is more fun when it’s running than when it’s stationary, which gives the D.C. area’s many splash parks an edge over most pools. Plus, they’re a good way to cool off without getting totally drenched. Perhaps the most picturesque splash park in D.C. is the waterfall-edged pool at Yards Park. (Don’t be alarmed — it doesn’t actually mix with the Anacostia River.) Another favorite, especially among the toddler set, is the sprayground at Virginia Highlands Park, which features hanging buckets that periodically dump water on the heads of unsuspecting children. SADIE DINGFELDER

White House FreshFarm Market, Vermont Avenue between H and I streets; Thursdays through Nov. 17, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Hit the road for a music festival Your summer can’t end without a trip to a music festival, and August brings three different experiences. If you want to see a bunch of artists in a familiar setting, Merriweather Post Pavilion offers two chances this month. The annual Summer Spirit Festival caters to R&B fans, with headliners Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae on Saturday and Jill Scott and The Roots on Sunday. Hip-hop heads should get to Trillectro to see Kid Cudi and up-and-comers Rae Sremmurd and GoldLink. For a daylong event in a more unusual setting, there’s the Hot August Music Festival at the scenic Oregon Ridge Park, with performances from District electronica pioneers Thievery Corporation and bluegrass band Railroad Earth. And if you’d like a camping trip with a live soundtrack and a clothing-optional dress code, there’s Fields Festival. The immersive three-day event features headlining sets from the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra, breakout Baltimore synth-pop act Future Islands and the eccentric Dan Deacon. RUDI GREENBERG

Yards Park, 355 Water St. SE Virginia Highlands Park, 1600 S. Hayes St., Arlington.

Enjoy a frozen treat At Ice Cream Jubilee in Navy Yard, grab a cup or cone with a few of owner Victoria Lai’s eclectic flavors — such as Thai iced tea and mango habanero — and park yourself in the grassy shade of Yards Park. Or head to National Harbor, overlooking the Potomac River, where Brandon Byrd’s charmingly retro Goodies Frozen Custard serves vanilla custard, sundaes and a rotating “donutwich.” Another option: Go for greener pastures in a scenic country setting. Fauquier County’s Moo Thru, with gobs of mostly classic flavors (cookies and cream, strawberry, mint chocolate) to choose from, is a classic pit stop for locals and daytripping city folk alike. BECKY KRYSTAL Ice Cream Jubilee, 301 Water St. SE Goodies Frozen Custard, 150 American Way, National Harbor, Md. Moo Thru, 11402 James Madison Hwy., Remington, Va.

Drink the cocktail of the moment outdoors This year’s biggest cocktail fling was frosé, a slushy mix of rosé, fruit and, at times, liqueur. It’s a light, refreshing beverage — perfect for taking the edge off a swampy Washington afternoon. While local bars and restaurants have jumped on the frosé bandwagon, let’s not kid ourselves: Frosé isn’t a new classic that bartenders will bring back next year. So enjoy it while you still can, whether that’s on the rooftop of The Brixton, where the frosé is more of a cocktail with the addition of Aperol (an herbal, orange-based Italian amaro), or on the Georgetown waterfront at Orange Anchor, where the lemony version is served in a daiquiri glass, garnished with a plump strawberry. F.H. The Brixton, 901 U St. NW Orange Anchor, 3050 K St. NW

Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, Md., offers a wide variety of pick-your-own options (blackberries, flowers, herbs, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes), perfect for filling a pie or throwing together a fresh dinner. In Poolesville, Md., families can kick back at Rocklands Farm, a 34-acre expanse with a winery, organic garden and barn. Sit on a picnic table and sample a semi-dry sparkling chambourcin or a dry-hopped cider, while children play on the grass and gawk at chickens, sheep and pigs. On weekends through the fall, wood-fired pizza makers Pizza Brama set up on the farm, hawking classic and seasonal pies topped with such ingredients as squash blossoms and housemade fennel sausage. So consider lunch taken care of, as well. EMILY CODIK Butler’s Orchard, 22222 Davis Mill Road, Germantown, Md. Rocklands Farm, 14525 Montevideo Road, Poolesville, Md.

Catch a free outdoor concert It’s not too late to enjoy Jazz in the Garden, the free concert series that’s almost as much about drinking wine on the Mall as it is about the music. (If you care about the music, local blues and soul group Moonshine Society is worth catching Aug. 26.) Strathmore’s summer concerts at the Gudelsky Gazebo are still going strong, with the Hawaiianinspired Uke Fest coming on Aug. 17. The family-friendly event includes performances from Denmark’s Tobias Elof, organizers Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, and the Strathmore Ukulele Orchestra. The Petworth Park Summer Jam is the new kid on D.C.’s free music scene. The final show in the monthly concert series features DJ sets from a mix of artists on local indie label 1432 R, along with Beautiful Swimmers. R.G. Watch a free outdoor flick Several free outdoor movie series already have packed up their projectors until next summer, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. The Comcast Outdoor Film Festival at Strathmore kicks off Aug. 20 with “Jurassic World” and continues for two consecutive nights with “Minions” and “The Wizard of Oz.” The Union Market Drive-In screens “Ratatouille” this Friday, “Grease” on Sept. 2 and “Ghostbusters” on Oct. 7. (Sorry, Kristen Wiig fans, it’s the 1984 original.) In NoMa, you can still catch “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” on Wednesday and “Jurassic Park” on Aug. 17. Food trucks park near the Rosslyn Cinema Outdoor Festival, with Captain Cookie scheduled to offer treats before a screening of “Up” on Friday. The Friday movies continue there through Aug. 26, when things end on a teary note with “The Notebook.” E.C. EXHIBITS Every December, art collectors flock to Art Basel Miami Beach to bid on the hottest contemporary art around. Hirshhorn chief curator Stephane Aquin beat them all to the punch in 2015, when he bought a piece called “Still Life With Spirit and Xitle” before the international art fair even opened. The sculpture, by Native American activist and artist Jimmie Durham, turned out to be the star of the show. Seemingly no one could resist snapping photos of his piece, a 9.5-ton boulder crushing a 1992 Dodge Spirit. “If we had not purchased it, two other major museums were waiting in line behind us to buy it,” Aquin says. (Hirshhorn officials wouldn’t reveal what they paid, but the piece reportedly went for less than $1 million.) On Saturday, “Still Life With

Spirit and Xitle” will take over a spot near the museum’s entrance that was previously occupied by a pointy black sculpture by Alexander Calder. Durham’s piece will be on view indefinitely, as long as the car doesn’t rust too much. “We at the Hirshhorn are big supporters of Calder, but there are three, if not four, other Calders on the Mall, and we thought it would be interesting to update the entrance of the Hirshhorn with a work that is

more recent and just as, if not more, striking,” Aquin says. Durham created “Still Life With Spirit and Xitle” in 2007 in Mexico, using a boulder that was created by a volcano known as Xitle, which destroyed the ancient city of Cuicuilco in about A.D. 245. The artist painted a mischievous smile on the giant red rock and, using a crane, dropped it onto an unmarked black Dodge Spirit — a vehicle often used by Mexico’s undercover cops. The piece, Aquin says, suggests a nature spirit taking revenge on modernity. But even if people don’t know the backstory, it’s still fun to see a car that’s been smashed. “It’s exhilarating. It brings a feeling of reckless joy,” Aquin says. “We think the public is going to love it.” SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS)

Seth MacFarlane ‘FAMILY GUY’ CREATOR, CLASSIC POP VOCALIST, TRUMP HATER

BEFORE HE CREATED “Family Guy” and “Ted,” Seth MacFarlane was a 9-year-old who was obsessed

with John Williams film scores and acted in local productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. For the past several years, MacFarlane has been channeling his younger self by singing Rodgers and Hammerstein and Frank Sinatra songs with the world’s best orchestras. MacFarlane’s work as an orchestral frontman has earned him two Grammy nominations: for his 2011 debut, “Music Is Better Than Words,” and for 2015’s “No One Ever Tells You.” On Saturday, he’ll perform pop standards with the National Symphony Orchestra at Wolf Trap. CASSANDRA MILLER (FOR EXPRESS)

You voice a Frank Sinatraesque mouse in the upcoming animated comedy “Sing” and borrowed Sinatra’s microphone from the Smithsonian to record your first album. What draws you to him? The guy was really a Mozart of vocalization. There’s just no one else like him that was able to interpret in such a way and at the same time have an instrument that was so classically refined. It’s just a real rarity. But, I did really get into Sinatra in a backward way. It was the orchestrations that drew me to that music. You also play piano, but when performing, you just sing. Why?

It’s OK to be nosy.

“The fans of ‘Family Guy’ aren’t that out of their element because of how much music there is on the show.” If I’m performing in front of a crowd and I’m really nervous, I can still sing. You can drink and still do it well! If I’ve got to play that piano and I’m really nervous, my fingers won’t work and I won’t be able to do it. There is something about singing that is a little less mathematical, and mathematical is not my strong suit. You use a different part of the brain than you do for playing an instrument, I think. At these shows, how do you satisfy fans of these renowned orchestras as well as fans of “Family Guy” and “Ted”? It’s something that has taken a little bit of honing in the past couple of years, but we’ve actually

people

managed to do it. If anything, it’s modeled after one of those Vegas shows at the Sands, I suppose, from the early ’60s, where you had really fantastic music and great orchestrations, but you had a lot of jokes in between. That’s kind of the balance I go for. The fans of “Family Guy” aren’t that out of their element because of how much music there is on the show and because of how much orchestra work there is on the show. You hosted the 2011 Comedy Central “Roast of Donald Trump” and are vocally anti-Trump. Can the Wolf Trap audience expect any political jabs at your show? I’m not shy. If I perform at the Houston Symphony, I’ll probably keep that stuff out of it, because people have paid good money and they’re there to see a show, so I’m not going to ram my politics down their throats. But certainly in D.C., I think it’s safe.

Wolf Trap, Filene Center, 1551 Trap Road, Vienna; Sat., 8:15 p.m., $25-$65.

Only in

XX1236_5x.2

What made you start taking voice lessons? It was late in the first season of “Family Guy,” and we were starting to do more and more musical numbers. I was just so impressed by the caliber of the orchestras and so aware that I was working with some of the best studio players in the world that I felt, I’ve got to be on my game.

Local musician Mark G. Meadows makes his acting debut in the Washington-area premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical “Jelly’s Last Jam.” The show chronicles the life of Jelly Roll Morton, the pianist credited for helping birth jazz. Told from the perspective of its recently deceased, stuck-in-limbo title character, the musical extends past the ups and downs of Morton’s life, simultaneously delving into issues of history and race and how jazz came to be.

Some of the bands performing throughout the two days in four venues (including St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church) include Kid Claws, Bleary Eyed, The Effects and Foster Carrots. If you love William Shakespeare and Jane Austen, the Folger has an exhibit for you. “Will & Jane” examines the influence pop culture has had on the afterlives of the two authors, who share some surprising parallels (for example, both have inspired zombie-based parodies: “Shakespeare Undead” and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”). Exhibit highlights include rubbings of the authors’ gravestones, branded merchandise and even bobbleheads.

The Band Perry The Band Perry’s genre-spanning work includes such hits as “If I Die Young” and “You Lie.” Sunday is your chance to see the country trio perform brand-new single “Comeback Kid,” which reflects on the group’s past year or so. the past year touring with Dan Auerbach’s The Arcs, adding background vocals and horns to that band’s psychedelic garage rock. The New York-based, allfemale mariachi band also opens many Arcs shows and usually throws in a cover of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” to its envelopepushing take on the traditional Mexican genre.

Local artists, musicians and chefs are coming together in honor of biscuits. Sort of. Biscuit Jam, organized by Mason Dixie Biscuit Co. to mark the company’s second anniversary, is a celebration of the creative spirit found in D.C.’s Ivy City neighborhood, which Mason Dixie calls home. The festival will have live music from local acts (like Bumper Jacksons), food vendors from all over D.C. and more than 150 artists showcasing their wares. General admission tickets include one beer or glass of wine.

Warner’s acquisition of a 10 percent stake in Hulu, meaning Hulu’s livestreaming TV service, debuting in 2017, will carry programming from CNN, Cartoon Network, Turner Classic Movies, TNT, TBS and other Turner-owner properties. The deal, announced Wednesday, makes Time Warner the fourth media giant to own a stake in Hulu; Disney, NBCUniversal and Fox each owns 30 percent.

“[They know] how to have a good time, so when it came to figuring out their lodgings in Rio, they weren’t just going to settle for something as average as bunking up in [the] athletes’ village.” GINA MEI, at cosmopolitan.com, on the U.S. Olympic men’s and women’s basketball teams, which will be staying on the Silver Cloud, a luxury cruise ship with 24-hour security and 7-foot beds, while they are in Brazil. NBA stars who will be staying on the ship include Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony and Kyrie Irving. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may be called upon to tend to an issue that is too sensitive for others. You know the history better than anyone else. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You can do much to ease someone’s tension over a necessary evil. You know that things will be looking up very soon. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You have the ability to make things much more pleasant for someone who is going through a difficult time. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You can share your views with a certain acquaintance without any risk of being misunderstood. He or she gets you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You are not in a position to make demands of a certain individual — yet. Soon, however, you’ll be able to ask for whatever you want.

WEDNESDAY’S SOLUTION

Don’t neglect your physical needs. If it’s rest you require, get some. Be sure to eat right and stimulate your mind as well. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You have something very big on the docket. Tend to lesser issues as soon as you can, and give yourself ample time to prepare. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may not have understood precisely what steps you had to take to get where you are, but it all should make sense now.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You can

trust that someone close to you has your best interests at heart and will keep you from any real dangers. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Someone may want something from you that you are not necessarily prepared to give. Or perhaps it’s just that you don’t really want to. “It just feels like he’s not in touch with reality, wearing that hair around town.”

The celebrity hair colorist who was rumored to be Ozzy Osbourne’s mistress told her story in People magazine this week, confirming that the two had a four-year relationship. “When I say he gave me the greatest love of my life, I mean it,” Michelle Pugh told the magazine. She said their relationship began after she colored his hair in 2011. When asked for comment, Osbourne’s rep said their relationship was purely physical, and arose from the singer’s sex addiction. “Since his relationship with Ms. Pugh was exposed, Ozzy has gone into intense therapy,” the rep said.
