Even by 13-year-old boy standards, his room reeked

A man’s attempt to burn bees out of their nest backfired after the ill-advised extermination method caught fire to a Georgia home, destroying most of it. Fayette County Deputy Fire Chief Tom Bartlett said the man lit a stick on fire last weekend, then tried to poke it up into the bees’ nest near the roof to get rid of them. That set fire to part of the house, and the flames then spread through the attic and engulfed much of the structure. (AP)

A New Mexico law enforcement officer who was forced to resign admits he looked at pictures of naked women on the internet while on duty, but says he was doing so as part of his job. Former Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Mark Kmatz filed a complaint for employment retaliation on Wednesday. Kmatz says he was looking at the naked pictures to research “a specific group of individuals with distinct tattoos and piercings.” (AP)

A 13-year-old Hamden, Conn., boy got an unpleasant surprise when he awoke to find a skunk in his bed. Police say the skunk apparently got into the home by climbing through a hole in a trash can that a resident then brought inside. An animal control officer responded to a call about 6 a.m. on July 25 to find “the poignant smell of skunk, which emanated throughout the house.” The family got the animal out of the house on their own. Snapchat post brings girls’ disqualification KIRKLAND, WASH. A girls softball team from Virginia learned a hard lesson about social media: After a victory, think twice about gloating over your opponent on their home turf — especially if the chosen method of gloating is posting a photo on social media of six teammates flipping the bird under the caption, “watch out host.” The 12-to-14-year-olds who make up the Atlee junior league softball team from Mechanicsville, Va., learned this the hard way on Saturday when they were disqualified from the nationally televised championship game at the Junior League World Series in Kirkland, Wash., after one team member posted that photo on her Snapchat account following a victory on Friday. The team apologized Saturday, but it was too late to repair the damage the image had caused. Little League spokesman

Atlee’s softball team was disqualified from the championship game.

Kevin Fountain called the post “inappropriate” in a statement to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, explaining that it violated the league’s “policies regarding unsportsmanlike conduct.” The disqualification didn’t sit well with the Atlee team manager, Scott Currie, who found out about the photo shortly after the team posted it following a 1-0 win. Currie immediately reprimanded the girls who were involved, before demanding they delete the post and apologize in person to their rivals. “It’s a travesty for these girls,”

Currie told the Times-Dispatch on Saturday. “Yes, they screwed up, but I don’t think the punishment fit the crime.” According to Atlee coach Chris Mardigian, who spoke to RVA Sports, the post came in retaliation to “several incidents of harassment” perpetrated by some Kirkland team members that targeted the Atlee team. Making matters worse for Atlee, Kirkland was chosen to replace Atlee in Saturday’s championship game and lost, 7-1, to USA Central. MARISSA PAYNE

A White House makeover THE DISTRICT Donald Trump has spent a good chunk of his presidency far away from the fly-infested White House — lately at his resort in Bedminster, N.J., where he recently explained to fellow golfers that the “White House is a real dump,” according to Golf magazine. You may have heard this already — and that Trump denied making the remark. “TOTALLY UNTRUE,” he wrote last week, several hours before he again evacuated the White House for Bedminster — at which point a renovation crew immediately began tearing the presidential residence apart. Bec ause, rega rd less of whether Trump said it, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has undeniably acquired some not-un-dumplike qualities over the years. The White House is a centuries-old mansion whose original designers and occupants, whatever their foresight regarding matters of governance, never planned for the plumbing, wiring, extensions and HVAC systems that would be tacked on in future decades. President Harry S. Truman imagined that the building was haunted — and it was so dilapidated that he had the place overhauled in the 1940s. That was the White House’s last major renovation, and many a smirch has accumulated since.

Presidential mansion to get less ’dump’-like in Trump’s absence

Workers were quick to remove items from the White House on Friday after President Trump left for a 17-day trip to his resort in Bedminster, N.J.

President Bill Clinton had a little asbestos problem in the 1990s. President Barack Obama was famously beset by a housefly during a TV interview a few months into his presidency, amusing reporters when he killed it on camera. Trump called the report of his alleged “dump” comment “Fake News,” though a White House official told CNN that the president frequently complained about the

building’s poor condition. So a worker turned off the air conditioning as soon as Trump left for Bedminster on Friday, The New York Times reported. White House officials packed up and moved to a building next door; the Resolute desk was hauled off; and a crew will work to overhaul the place before the president returns in 2½ weeks. “The president’s going to continue to work, and we all need

to be relocated out of the West Wing due to these renovations,” deputy White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters told The Associated Press. She was right. According to The Times, the White House’s heating and air conditioning systems were nearly three decades old and supposed to have been replaced during Obama’s second term. But Obama elected to leave the job for the next president, the newspaper reported. “It’s dire,” Walters told the Times, adding that the system was effectively 81 years old in HVAC years. Crews will also address other embarrassments. These include a “foul odor” that CNN reported in the West Wing, where ceilings drip in the rain. And as The Times noted: The South Portico will get its first new steps in 64 years, and Obama-era carpets will be de-yellowed. It’s unclear how much of the work, if any, is at Trump’s behest. The White House did not respond to requests for comment Saturday. And again, the president says he never called the White House a dump. In a tweet after leaving for Bedminster, he denied he was even taking a vacation — suggesting instead that “long planned construction” had forced him to work out of office. Regardless, when he gets back from his latest escape from the White House, he should see a spruced-up building that offers slightly more incentive to stay. AVI SELK (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The number of overdose-related deaths in Maryland from January through March of this year, according to figures the state health department released Friday. That’s a 37 percent increase over the 401 overdose-related deaths in the same period last year. The report also noted an increase in fentanyl-related deaths, which is driving the overall spike in overdoses. There were 372 fentanyl-related deaths in the first three months of this year, more than double the 157 fentanyl-related deaths during the same period last year. (AP)

Rosenstein says Mueller can probe any crimes

verbatim

POLITICS Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Sunday that the expanding investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election is continuing apace, even as President Trump dismissed the probe as “a total fabrication.” Rosenstein said special counsel Robert Mueller can investigate any crimes that he might discover within the scope of his probe, but the deputy attorney general would not discuss which individuals are the subject of the inquiry. The interview came days after Trump said he believes it would be inappropriate for Mueller to dig into Trump family finances. “The special counsel is subject to the rules and regulations of the Department of Justice, and we don’t engage in fishing expeditions,” Rosenstein said when asked about the probe in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” Rosenstein declined to comment on reports that Mueller is using a grand jury in a court in Washington to aid in his investigation, but he said that such a step is a routine part of “many investigations.” “It’s an appropriate way to gather documents, sometimes to bring witnesses in, to make sure

Senior White House counselor Kellyanne Conway called the probe a “fabrication” in an interview on ABC’s “This Week.” Trump called it “the totally made-up Russia story” in a campaign-style speech he delivered Thursday in West Virginia. The attacks have raised concerns among Democrats and some Republicans that Trump may be looking for ways to undermine the investigation. Those

fears led Sens. Thom Tillis, RN.C., and Christopher A. Coons, D-Del., to propose legislation that would give a judge the ability to review any decision by the president to fire Mueller. Tillis said Sunday that he does not agree that the investigation is a witch hunt and said the bill is intended to bolster the independence of the Justice Department. “We’ll let the facts lead us to whether or not it was a hoax or a distraction,” Tillis said during a “This Week” interview. “But we are where we are, and I want to see this investigation concluded so that we can get on to doing the good work the president has already started with regulatory reform, health care and tax reform.” KELSEY SNELL

Meaty pet food puts a strain on the planet If you have a cat or dog, Gregory Okin would like you to consider what their meat-heavy food is doing to the environment. Okin, a geographer at UCLA, crunched the numbers and found America’s 180 million or so dogs and cats gulp down about 25 percent of all the animalderived calories consumed in the U.S. each year. If these pets established a sovereign nation, it would rank fifth in global meat consumption. Producing that meat — which requires more land, water and energy and pollutes more than plant-based food — creates as much as 64 million tons of greenhouse gases annually, or about the equivalent of driving more than 12 million cars around for a year. That doesn’t mean petkeeping must be eschewed for the sake of the planet, but “neither is it an unalloyed good,” Okin wrote in a study published last week in PLOS One. So what should we do? Cailin Heinze, a veterinary nutritionist at Tufts University, said one place to start is by passing on the highprotein or human-grade foods. “Dogs and cats happily eat organ meat,” Heinze said. “Americans do not.” And Okin suggests people thinking about getting a dog might consider a smaller one. Or, if you think a hamster might fulfill your pet desires, go that route. KARIN BRULLIARD

China presses N. Korea Pyongyang is urged by its benefactor to make ‘smart decisions’ and stop missile testing

NATIONAL SECURITY A U.S. push to further isolate North Korea appeared to be reaping some dividends Sunday as China, Pyongyang’s major benefactor, urged its outcast neighbor to make a “smart decision” and stop conducting missile launches and nuclear tests. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, after meeting with North Korea’s top diplomat during an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gathering in Manila, the Philippines, said the situation on the Korean Peninsula is critical. He also said, however, that it could be a turning point for negotiations over North Korea’s nuclear proliferation, which led the U.N. Security Council to impose more sanctions on North Korea and its exports on Saturday. “Do not violate the U.N.’s decision or provoke international society’s goodwill by conducting missile launching or nuclear tests,” Wang said after talks with Ri Yong Ho, North Korea’s foreign minister. Wang, however, quickly added, “Of course, we would like to urge other parties like the U.S. and South Korea to stop increasing tensions.” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson arrived in Manila on Saturday night in what State Department officials have said will be

a concerted effort to enlist other countries in the campaign to get North Korea to abandon its missile and nuclear tests. Concern has mounted that North Korea is developing its missile technology quicker than expected, after tests last month of missiles that experts said are capable of striking the U.S. mainland. “Certainly we want to resolve this issue through negotiations, and this pressure campaign, the sanctions, it’s all about trying to convince the North Koreans that the fast way forward is to come back to the table and talk,” said Susan Thornton, assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific affairs. Tillerson also has pointedly stated several times that the U.S.

U.N. imposes sanctions The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved tough new sanctions Saturday to punish North Korea for its escalating nuclear and missile programs, including a ban on coal and other exports worth over $1 billion — a huge bite into its total exports, valued at $3 billion last year. U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley called the resolution “the single largest economic sanctions package ever leveled against the North Korean regime.” The U.S.-drafted resolution, negotiated with North Korea’s neighbor and ally China, is aimed at increasing economic pressure on Pyongyang to return to negotiations over its nuclear and missile programs. On Sunday, he declared the latest U.N. sanctions a “good outcome.” That prompted South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha to correct him slightly. “It was a very, very good outcome,” she said. South Korean officials told reporters that Kang and Tillerson had agreed to pursue the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through peaceful measures. But the diplomatic road ahead is rocky. U.S. officials rejected Beijing’s call for the North to halt its nuclear program in exchange for the U.S. and South Korea suspending joint military exercises. CAROL MORELLO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“As long as nuclear weapons exist and policymakers threaten their use, their horror could leap into our present at any moment.” KAZUMI MATSUI, mayor of Hiroshima, Japan, speaking on Sunday, the 72nd anniversary of the world’s first atomic bomb

attack. He noted the issue has gained urgency as North Korea accelerates work on its nuclear weapons program.

Israel to plans ban Qatar’s Al-Jazeera network over allegations it incites violence; network to take legal action

A company trying to recover from allegations of rampant sexism might reasonably think hiring a female chief executive would help it restore credibility. But what if no women want the job? That looks to be the case for the ride-hailing company Uber, which is trying to replace deposed CEO Travis Kalanick after a reign defined by highflying growth and a toxic brand of corporate machismo. In the wake of Kalanick’s departure, a number of A-list female executives have made it clear they are not interested in the position. Facebook’s chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, was a top pick for the board, but she didn’t want the job. Neither did Susan Wojcicki, chief of Googleowned YouTube. General Motors chief executive Mary Barra and EasyJet CEO Carolyn McCall were reportedly approached, but did not work out. Last week, HP chief executive Meg Whitman prominently took herself out of the running. There are no women left on Uber’s current short list, which is down to three CEO candidates, according to people familiar with the search who spoke on the condition of anonymity. While it’s not yet known who will become Uber’s next CEO — the board expects to make a decision before Labor Day — the position now appears likely to be filled by a white man. THREE POINTERS

Su’a Cravens is starting to show some improvement in play recognition at training camp.

Next-level safety vision Su’a Cravens is working on ‘eye discipline’ as he adjusts to new position REDSKINS As Project Defensive Rebuild continues for the Redskins, so too does Su’a Cravens’ transition to strong safety. The second-year pro flashed potential last year despite being miscast as an undersized inside linebacker. Although he struggled with durability, Cravens displayed a nose for the ball, good pass coverage skills and the range needed to make plays across the field. Now Cravens (6 feet 2, 216 pounds) is back at a more natural position. He trimmed down from 225 pounds to be faster and

more effective as he’s lined up at strong safety. Offseason addition D.J. Swearinger is entrenched at free safety. It’s been a somewhat quiet start to training camp for Cravens. But his progress is encouraging, according to coaches and teammates who said the mental aspects of the position are the toughest to learn. Cravens is still working on “eye discipline.” That involves reading formations and pre-snap motions, recognizing how things unfold post-snap and quickly deciding how to react. A play might look like a run, but a safety can’t focus on the running back if his assignment is to read the tight end. Or, he can’t just lock in on the tight end if he’s not in man-to-man coverage.

Patched-up position

With the tandem of Su’a Cravens and D.J. Swearinger, the Redskins have safeties they hope can fix a position too often plugged in with over-thehill players and converted corners. Five different guys started at safety for Washington last year: Duke Ihenacho (10 games), Donte Whitner (9), Will Blackmon (6) David Bruton (4) and DeAngelo Hall (3). (EXPRESS)

“If I’ve got poor eye discipline, I’m biting on the play-action,” Cravens said. “If I’ve got good eye discipline, I’m triggering pass, not the run.” Cravens is learning that strong eye discipline comes from religious film study. A defensive back that can recognize

tendencies can avoid guessing. Patience is another important key in developing keen instincts. “A coach of mine used to say, ‘Chris Paul it. Don’t Russell Westbrook it,’ ” Swearinger said. “Chris Paul is more finesse and Westbrook is more fast and go. If you Chris Paul it, you’ll be fine.” In recent days, Cravens has seemed to be getting to the right place at the right time. Three times, he positioned himself to hit Vernon Davis right as a pass from Kirk Cousins got to the tight end. Because players don’t live tackle in practice, Cravens held up each time. He promises that the big hits will come once the games begin. For now, it’s about reading, reacting and positioning himself correctly. MIKE JONES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Unofficial starters The Redskins on Sunday released their first unofficial depth chart ahead of Thursday’s preseason opener at the Ravens. That offers us a glimpse into the status of a few position battles. (EXPRESS)

3 Outside linebacker Preston Smith (ankle sprain) is unlikely to play Thursday but is listed as a starter opposite Ryan Kerrigan. Trent Murphy and Junior Galette are next in line.

2 Defensive end The team is expected to experiment and rotate often on the line. Ziggy Hood and Stacy McGee are listed first with Terrell McClain and Jonathan Allen behind them.

1 Inside linebacker Zach Brown was brought in this year after making the Pro Bowl with the Bills, but he’s still learning the scheme. Will Compton and Mason Foster are still the listed starters.

HALL OF FAME ADMISSION

Taylor: I ‘stole a lot’ of Snyder’s money

During his speech Saturday at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, longtime Dolphins pass rusher Jason Taylor gave a quick shout-out to Redskins owner Dan Snyder, who signed off on a trade to acquire him for two draft picks in 2008. “I stole a lot of money from you, but I appreciate it,” Taylor said with a laugh. Taylor had 139.5 sacks over 15 years in the NFL, but only 3.5 of them came during his lone season with Washington. Jay Cutler agrees to deal in Miami Jay Cutler has decided to postpone a career in broadcasting for the chance to be Ryan Tannehill’s replacement. Cutler, who was hired as an analyst by Fox, agreed Sunday on a one-year, $10 million contract with the Dolphins, a person familiar with the situation said. The quarterback will compete with Matt Moore for a starting job. As of Sunday, the Dolphins were still consulting experts on Tannehill’s left knee injury; he’s expected to miss at least six weeks and could be out for the season. Dolphins coach Adam Gase was offensive coordinator for the Bears when Cutler had a career-best QB rating with them in 2015. Gase joined Miami in 2016. Cutler, 34, parted with Chicago in March after eight seasons. (AP)

Gatlin booed at ceremony after spoiling Bolt’s finale

Zverev beats Johnson to win fourth title of 2017

At Sunday’s medal ceremony for Saturday’s 100 meters at the world championships in London, Usain Bolt drew massive applause as he received his bronze medal. Silver medalist Christian Coleman was also warmly greeted. But when Justin Gatlin came up to get his gold medal, the crowd booed. The intensity didn’t quite reach the peaks of the previous day, when Gatlin won in 9.92 seconds, beating Bolt in what the eight-time Olympic champion from Jamaica has said will be his final competition. With his doping history — his ban ended in 2010 — Gatlin has been seen as the bad guy to Bolt’s hero. (AP)

Alexander Zverev dropped his opening set at the Citi Open and had to survive a third-set tiebreaker to avoid a first-round upset. After his win over Jordan Thompson, the 20-year-old from Germany didn’t lose a set. The eighth-ranked Zverev easily dispatched South African Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday in Washington for his fourth ATP title of the year, matching Rafael Nadal. Only Roger Federer has more titles this season, with five. Zverev’s win was his first on an outdoor hard court, which could help him in the U.S. Open. The women’s final Sunday ended after Express’ deadline. (AP)

Wieters’ slam caps comeback for Nats The avalanche began with Ryan Zimmerman’s double. Edwards was instructed to intentionally walk Daniel Murphy and bring up Anthony Rendon with the bases loaded. Edwards grazed Rendon, the final member of the fearsome quartet, which scored Harper to tie the game. That brought up Matt Wieters, who crushed the first pitch he saw, a hanging curveball, over the ivy-covered brick wall in center for his third career grand slam.

NATIONALS 9, CUBS 4 Carl Edwards Jr. found himself in an unenviable spot in the eighth inning Sunday at Wrigley Field. The reliever was summoned from the Cubs’ bullpen to prevent the Nationals’ prolific middle-ofthe-order foursome from erasing a one-run lead. Bryce Harper had just beat out an infield single. Just a handful of pitches later, the Nationals would take a four-run lead on the way to a 9-4 victory.

Scherzer preps for start

Matt Wieters, right, is congratulated for his eighth-inning grand slam.

Brian Goodwin added a solo home run in the ninth inning to tack on the final run for Washington (65-44). In his second MLB start, Erick Fedde held Chicago (58-52) to two

runs over his first five innings but allowed two more with back-toback homers by Wilson Contreras and Kyle Schwarber in the sixth. That left Oliver Perez to combine with recent acquisitions

CLASSES BEGIN SOON! THERE’S STILL TIME TO APPLY

Max Scherzer said Friday that he was preparing to start against the Marlins tonight (7:05, MASN). The right-hander threw a bullpen session Saturday, but as of Sunday, the Nationals hadn’t officially named a starter. Scherzer exited his start Tuesday with neck spasms. If the team wants to give him an extra day off, Gio Gonzalez could return from paternity leave to start. (TWP)

TELEVISION Wouldn’t it be nice if all new TV shows were anthologies? What if every show kept to an eight- or 10-episode arc that wrapped itself up and then, with its creators and some of its repertory cast in tow, moved on to an entirely different story? Viewers could then dip in and out, depending on whether the current story grabs them. If such a revolution came, it might look a little like what’s new on cable this summer, starting with Discovery’s eight-episode “Manhunt: Unabomber” (10 p.m. Tuesdays), the network’s attempt to break into prestige scripted dramas. There’s also USA’s instantly gripping “The Sinner” (Wednesdays at 10 p.m.), which is based on German writer Petra Hammesfahr’s novel about a woman (Jessica Biel) who snaps and commits

a heinous crime in public. The former tells the story of deadly mail-bomber Ted Kaczynski’s ability to elude the FBI for 18 years, and focuses on agent Jim Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington), an ex- cop put on the UNABOM investigation. “Manhunt” flashes between 1995, as Fitz becomes obsessed to the point of alienating his wife and kids, and 1997, when he is summoned back to the case to visit a wily Kaczynski (Paul Bettany) in prison and must try to persuade him to plead guilty rather than face trial. The manhunt in “Manhunt” grows more tense, but it never answers all questions. Who was the Unabomber? What made him tick? Honestly, who cares anymore? Bring on the next “Manhunt.” “The Sinner,” on the other hand, begins on an unflinching, shocking note and won’t let go. As Cora Tannetti, Biel plays a new mom who seems unhappy with the close confines of her small-town life: She manages the

Paul Bettany, top, and Jessica Biel, below, take blessedly brief trips to TV land in anthologies “Manhunt: Unabomber” and “The Sinner,” respectively.

books at the air conditioning supplier where her husband, Mason (Christopher Abbott), works with his father. Then, while on a lake outing and in front of dozens of witnesses, Cora stabs a man to death. She is taken to jail, where she immediately confesses and asks to be put away for life. “The Sinner” directs all of its energy toward the viewer’s empathy, which is a tricky place to be. Deglamorized and griefstricken, Biel is immediately convincing as both a victim, of sorts, and a possibly psychotic murderer. A viewer can’t help but wonder where it goes from here. With the security of the

anthology format, that same viewer runs a far smaller risk of reaching an ending made purposefully ambiguous by producers angling for renewal. It’s hard to think of a better solution to the peak-TV crisis than this. Viewers get higherquality shows starring actors who might not otherwise be ready to commit to the prospect of multiple seasons. And the shows are manageable in terms of time and scope; you can take them or leave them without needing to invest in a broad epic with its own detours and complicated mythology. Let’s hear it for the one-and-done.

‘This Is Us,’ minus one Emmy

NBC’s “This Is Us” has been deemed ineligible for its Emmy nod for outstanding contemporary costumes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, much of the nominated episode, “Moonshadow,” flashes back to the 1970s, breaking the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ rule for the category that 51 percent or more of the action must take place in the past 25 years. Sources said “House of Cards” will replace “This Is Us” as the fifth nominee for the award. (EXPRESS)

REFACE!

Write this down: ‘The Bold Type’ has wisdom to share “The Bold Type” (9 p.m. Tuesdays on Freeform) is the latest in a long line of shows and movies about how cool it is to work for a magazine. Although probably less cool than it used to be, since print magazines are kind of dying because of the internet. The fictitious magazine is Scarlet, a global publication for women. The three main characters are millennials: Jane (Katie Stevens), a writer finding her voice; Kat (Aisha Dee), a social media director afraid of long-term relationships; and Sutton (Meghann Fahy), an assistant who wants to be more than just an assistant.

The show can be pretty ridiculous. A strapless dress with a slender swath of fabric draped over one shoulder is acceptable office wear. And no one bats an eye when two potential lovers have a loud, intimate discussion in the middle of the open office space, which appears to have been furnished by Crate & Barrel. Yet “The Bold Type” turns out to be a groundbreaker. Kat is smitten with Adena, a photographer who’s a proud, hijab-wearing Muslim, feminist and lesbian. New York Magazine interviewed Muslim lesbians about the character; one said, “It was very nice to be represented.” And the editor-in-chief, seemingly frosty Jacqueline, is

a surprise. She’s not the devil wearing Prada; she’s kind and supportive. Maybe that’s because former Cosmopolitan editor Joanna Coles is an executive producer and wants to make editors look good. Jacqueline is at her best when Jane is at her worst. The writer is sued by Wall Street exec-turned-stripper “Morgyn Stanley.” Jane had promised to shield her identity in a profile but included too many telling details. And she makes matters worse by snidely telling the woman: “You expose yourself on a nightly basis. You’re a stripper.” A contrite Jane later tells Jacqueline she failed her. Jacqueline sagely replies, “Sometimes you’re just gonna fail. That is what it means to be a professional writer.” So if you don’t like this column, dear reader, if you feel like I’ve failed you, keep in mind: My failure is proof that I’m a professional writer. “If a gun rights organization says ‘We’re coming for you’ it’s reasonable you mean shooting them.” @FPWELLMAN, reacting to the National Rifle Association’s ad targeting The New York Times. In the ad, spokeswoman Dana Loesch says that “we the people” are “coming for,” The Times, and “are going to laser focus on your so-called honest pursuit of truth.” Some saw the message as an unveiled call to violence.

“There are many at Google who share this guy’s views. They do peer performance reviews. ... They discriminate.” @JUSTKELLY_OK, reacting to an essay by a Google employee

that was posted in an internal Google forum, saying that pay and leadership gaps between men and women can be caused by innate differences, and arguing against the company’s diversity initiatives. The anonymous post was shared publicly online and has called attention to Google’s internal culture.

“A guy loving his curvy wife? What’s next, a man loving his sick wife? Loving a woman who ages?” @ELLE91, reacting to author Robbie Tripp’s Instagram post celebrating his wife’s curvy body. Some hailed the post as body-positive, but others felt it was self-congratulatory. “I’m in awe of Curvy Wife Guy for having the courage to admit that he married a perfectly normal woman,” @BurgerVonStadt joked.

“Become your ancestor’s wildest dream.” @AVA, director Ava DuVernay, sharing this powerful message with a photo of the grave of one of Michelle Obama’s ancestors, Melvinia Shields, who was born a slave. “Her family would endure a five-generation journey that began in oppression and would lead her descendent to become first lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama,” the inscription says.

Sheriff’s reports say Soules left the scene and was arrested later at his home about 10 miles away. (AP)

Vanity Fair is standing by a detail in its profile of Angelina Jolie. Evgenia Peretz’s September cover story described a “game” used to find the child star of Jolie’s film “First They Killed My Father,” in which casting directors showed money to impoverished children only to take it away from them as an acting exercise. Jolie said last week that the suggestion that real money was taken from children is “false and upsetting.” The actress-director’s lawyer also asked the magazine for a correction to the story. Vanity Fair said in a statement Thursday that it has reviewed recordings of Jolie’s interviews and that it “stands by Peretz’s story as published.” (AP)
