Two versions of a New Jersey man’s obituary have appeared together in a newspaper — one saying he’s survived by his wife, and the other saying he’s survived by his longtime girlfriend. Both obituaries in the Press of Atlantic City agree that Leroy Bill Black died Tuesday of lung cancer. A dead raccoon in a Boulder, Colo., bike lane attracted more attention than the average roadkill after someone tied a helium balloon featuring the message “Get well soon!” to its foot. The raccoon was spotted Thursday morning by passers-by, who said they felt sad for the animal but were amused by the balloon. City contractors working to control traffic nearby say they saw a man drive up, tie the balloon to the raccoon and then drive off. (AP)

Is it back to school already? THE DISTRICT It was the first week in August, and teachers at Kelly Miller Middle School were already scrambling to decorate classrooms and hone lesson plans. The school’s more than 500 middle schoolers are scheduled to arrive at the Northeast D.C. campus today for the first day of school as summer continues for most others in the Washington area. They will be in class weeks earlier than in years past. Kelly Miller is one of 10 D.C. Public Schools facilities that will embark on a new, year-round academic calendar starting today. The academic year for these schools will have 20 more days than others in the system, with shorter and more frequent breaks during a school year that runs 200 days through all 12 months. One additional elementary school began the extended schedule during the 2015-2016 school year. More than half of the city’s charter schools already embrace the schedule, which is the latest push to close the achievement

gap in some of the city’s struggling schools. Students who attend a yearround school will get the equivalent of nearly an extra year of instructional days by the time they start high school. Catrina Brown, a sixth-grade English teacher at Kelly Miller, said she believes it will help students. “We’re looking at it as an adventure for the staff. It’s a new experience, but we are excited because it gives kids more time to engage with the content,” Brown said.

“I usually spend my summers doing education work anyway, teaching science classes at summer camp and the library.” RABIAH HARRIS, a science teacher at Kelly Miller, on switching from a 10-month contract to a 12-month contract for year-round classes

In an attempt to combat the so-called “summer brain drain,” the new schedule will mean that students and teachers will not have a long summer break, with the goal of retaining as much classroom learning as possible. Raymond Elementary in Petworth was the school system’s pilot school for the new schedule and just completed its first yearround school calendar. School officials hailed it as a success, though they said it’s too early to provide concrete data showing results. A school system spokesperson said 96 percent of Raymond students opted to attend the intersession days during breaks for extra academic coaching. Melinda Noble, a fourth-grade special education teacher at Raymond, said the normal summer break often caused a fair amount of learning loss, but after shorter breaks kids’ “minds came back refreshed.” The schools affected by the schedule change are H.D. Cooke Elementary in Adams Morgan and Garfield, Hendley, King, Randle Highlands, Thomas and Turner elementary schools and Hart, Johnson and Kelly Miller middle schools in Wards 7 and 8. Metro’s troubles make getting funds tougher

Officials have hard pitch to make to secure cash for beleaguered system ASTRID RIECKEN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION Metro’s recent safety problems have lawmakers and local leaders concerned that they will not be able to successfully lobby Congress and state legislatures for the additional funding that the transit system so desperately seeks. In the past five weeks — just as Metro has emphasized safety and taken drastic steps to warn employees about negligence — the problems have been stark and steady: red-light violations, derailments, a botched evacuation, a report about years of degraded track conditions, a transit police officer accused of attempting to aid the Islamic State. For Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va., that has been disheartening. “At this point, you have to just shake your head, because every day it’s something,” Connolly said Friday. “It’s very difficult in this environment to make that case and not have it fall on deaf ears.” For months, local lawmakers have tried to make the case that Metro has finally turned a corner and that the daylong emergency shutdown of the rail system in March signaled a new dedication to safety. Metro’s recent record, however, has stubbornly resisted that narrative. As the agency heads

into budget talks in the fall, the summer’s embarrassments do not make for a strong negotiating position. “This cannot happen anymore,” said Jack Evans, chairman of Metro’s board of directors. “It makes it really hard for me, when I’m out going to talk to members of Congress and senators and business leaders, trying to get more money to Metro, and these idiotic things happen.” In the coming weeks, lawmakers are also looking to suss out answers. Evans wants an emergency meeting of the Metro board — tentatively scheduled for Aug. 25 — to discuss a recent derailment near the East Falls Church station and other safety violations that have occurred in

recent weeks. (The board typically takes a month-long break from meetings at the end of the summer.) Evans’ swift action was sparked by a report released Wednesday by the National Transportation Safety Board that concluded that the derailment occurred because the space between the tracks had spread too wide and that 30 feet of track had crossties that were damaged and ineffective. “These continuous events occur on a daily basis,” said Evans, who is also a Democratic member of the D.C. Council member who represents Ward 2. “They are all really outrageous. We have to get this stuff under control.” MARTINE POWERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Police: Drug sting catches Va. mayor Officials say Fairfax leader caught trying to trade meth for sex acts FAIRFAX A three-term Northern Virginia mayor was arrested on drug charges after he tried to trade 2 grams of methamphetamine for sex acts in what turned out to be an undercover sting operation, police said Friday. City of Fairfax Mayor R. Scott Silverthorne was arrested Thursday night after meeting at a Tysons Corner hotel just outside the Capital Beltway with undercover detectives he approached through a website used to arrange casual sexual encounters between men, Fairfax County police said at a press conference. Police Capt. Jack Hardin said they received a tip that Silverthorne had been arranging drugsfor-sex encounters. Police then

set up an online profile on the website, and within two days Silverthorne made contact online with Silverthorne the detective who set up the profile, Hardin said. Silverthorne, who also worked as a substitute teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools, was arrested and gave a full confession, police said. He was released on his own recognizance while he awaits a preliminary hearing Oct. 31 on a felony charge of drug distribution and a misdemeanor charge of possessing drug paraphernalia. The city said Friday that Silverthorne appointed Councilman Jeffrey Greenfield as acting mayor, effective immediately. Greenfield issued a statement saying he would serve as mayor “until further notice.”

In interviews, Amiri described being kidnapped and held against his will by Saudi and American spies, while U.S. officials said he was to receive millions of dollars for his help in understanding Iran’s contested nuclear program. He was hanged the same week that Tehran executed a group of militants, and a year after the country agreed to a landmark accord to limit uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. Speaking to journalists Sunday, Iranian judiciary spokesman Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejehi said Amiri was convicted

It was also still unclear whether Amiri voluntarily defected to the U.S. or was abducted by agents, as he claimed. Amiri’s disappearance in 2009 came amid targeted killings in Iran of scientists and others associated with the country’s nuclear program — attacks that Iran blamed on the United States and Israel. Cracking the egg industry How animal welfare activists have pushed farmers to go cage-free WASHINGTONPOST.COM WONKBLOG

EVELYN HOCKSTEIN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

AGRICULTURE Fifteen years ago, few Americans other than farmers seemed to be thinking much about hens. Backyard chicken coops weren’t really a thing. No major animal rights group spent time or money on farm animal welfare. “Factory farming” wasn’t yet a catchphrase. No longer. In recent years, there has been a veritable revolution in public attention to eggs and the chickens that produce them. In the past two years, nearly 200 U.S. companies — including every major grocery and fast-food chain — that together buy half of the 7 billion eggs laid monthly have pledged to use only cage-free eggs by 2025. Grudgingly, the industry group that represents 95 percent of domestic egg producers says a cage-free future is a fait accompli. The fast shift toward uncaged hens is a sign of Americans’ increasing concern about animals, even ones known more for clucking than cuteness. It also amounts to one of the animal advocacy movement’s biggest victories in decades — one brought about by ballot measures, campaigns against companies, foodie culture and, above all, the power of the internet. “Whereas once this was an issue that was relegated to the margins, it’s now firmly cemented

Caged, egg-laying hens are often packed together in stacks of wire cages with no room to even spread their wings.

in the mainstream,” said Paul Shapiro of the Humane Society of the United States’ farm animal protection division, whose undercover egg-farm investigation videos can score a halfmillion views online in one day. “The future looks a lot brighter for chickens today than it did a decade ago, to put it mildly.” Today’s most influential activists negotiate with corporations and egg producers — not to liberate chickens but to get them roomier living conditions. Some activists and small farmers fault the cage-free champions, arguing that anything less than an end to factory farming sells out hens. They say that although cage-free chickens can spread their wings and perch

By the numbers According to the Humane League, nine out of 10 land animals raised to be eaten are chickens. Currently, about 90 percent of egg-laying hens are packed together in stacks of wire cages so small that they cannot spread their wings. Eliminating those cages would improve the lives of 280 million animals, the group says. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

and forage, the birds still spend their lives inside crowded barns. “It’s a substantial incremental improvement,” Shapiro said. “That’s the nature of social progress. Social progress generally occurs incrementally.” The momentum has grown out

of campaigns that caused nearly all major food services, grocery and restaurant companies to pledge to use only cage-free eggs. Cage-free eggs cost about three times more than conventional eggs, and updating facilities and equipment will add to the cost. “Are we realists and understand what’s realistically coming? Yes,” said Chad Gregory, president of United Egg Producers, which represents most American egg farmers, although he warned that the industry won’t be ready by 2025, when most companies have promised to source cage-free eggs. “We’ll do what our customers want us to do.” KARIN BRULLIARD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Sex under the influence: Pot vs. alcohol The growing acceptance of marijuana use raises a whole lot of interesting questions for public health researchers. Joseph Palamar and his colleagues at New York University wanted to know how it affects our sex lives. To that end, they recruited 24 heterosexual adults to take part in a series of in-depth interviews about prior sexual experiences that happened under the influence of either alcohol or marijuana. Here are a few observations from the study: Beer goggles are real. Respondents “overwhelmingly reported that alcohol use was more likely to (negatively) affect the partners they chose.” This was much less common with pot. Drunk sex is more likely to lead to regret. These negative emotions are probably at least partly due to drunk sex being associated more with strangers, while stoned sex was usually associated with people the respondents already knew. Stoned sex is more pleasurable than drunk sex. The study found that “alcohol tended to numb sensations and marijuana tended to enhance sensations.” Drunk sex is riskier. People typically said they exercised poorer judgment when drunk than when stoned, and were more likely to black out and forget whom they were with or whether they used protection. In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Kasich voiced serious doubts about Trump’s ability to win the Buckeye State, which is a battleground rich with electoral votes. “He’s going to win parts of Ohio where people are really hurting,” Kasich said. “But I still think it’s difficult if you are dividing to be able to win in Ohio.” Kasich has not endorsed Trump, and skipped the Republican National Convention. Speaking on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Flake cautioned that Clinton could win his state.

POLITICS Two Republican elected officials who have been critical of Donald Trump are voicing serious doubts about the mogul’s ability to win their key battleground states of Ohio and Arizona, after the GOP presidential nominee suffered one of the most bruising weeks of his campaign. In television interviews broadcast Sunday, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Sen. Jeff Flake, Ariz., said Trump needs to change as a candidate to prevent Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton from claiming their states.

U.S. Nazi sees ‘opportunity’ if Trump wins

Political attacks are getting crazy It seems everyone is psychoanalyzing the candidates — except the shrinks POLITICS Donald Trump had a very bad week — so bad that some were asking whether something was wrong with him. Like, really wrong. “We’re asking ourselves — I didn’t say this, but this is what everybody is saying: Is Donald Trump a sociopath?” MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said. Former Harvard Medical School dean Jeffrey Flier recently gave his opinion of the GOP candidate, tweeting: “Narcissistic personality disorder. Trump doesn’t just have it, he defines it.” And a Northwestern University professor recently published a 9,000-word psychological evaluation of Trump — from afar, of course — largely dealing with his narcissism. Meanwhile, Trump had his own diagnosis for his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton. “She is a totally unhinged

person. She’s unbalanced. And all you have to do is watch her, see her, read about her,” Trump said during a New Hampshire campaign rally Saturday. “She will cause — if she wins, which hopefully she won’t — the destruction of our country from within.” Trump called Clinton unstable and incompetent several times throughout the rally. “I think the people of this country don’t want somebody that’s going to short-circuit up here,” Trump said, pointing to his head. “Not as your president, not as your president.” Attacking a presidential candidate’s mental state is nothing new, and the American Psychiatric Association would like to remind psychiatrists it’s also unethical. “The unique atmosphere of this year’s election cycle may lead some to want to psychoanalyze the candidates,” Maria A. Oquendo, president of the APA,

wrote last week, “but to do so would not only be unethical, it would be irresponsible.” Back in 1964, a whole bunch of psychiatrists decided to psychoanalyze Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. The result was what’s known as the “Goldwater Rule,” which basically says that it’s OK to talk about psychiatric issues, but not OK to diagnose people you haven’t treated. The rule is the result of a 1964 survey by Fact magazine. The magazine surveyed more than 12,000 psychiatrists about Goldwater. About 2,400 responded, and half of them declared Goldwater

“Honestly, I don’t think she’s all there.” DONALD TRUMP, questioning Hillary Clinton’s mental health during a New Hampshire campaign rally Saturday

unfit for the presidency. “FACT: 1,189 Psychiatrists Say Goldwater Is Psychologically Unfit to Be President,” blared the headline. Goldwater sued for libel and won. “This large, very public ethical misstep by a significant number of psychiatrists violated the spirit of the ethical code that we live by as physicians, and could very well have eroded public confidence in psychiatry,” Oquendo wrote. Goldwater wasn’t the last candidate to face psychological speculation and armchair analysis during a campaign. In 1972, Thomas Eagleton withdrew as George McGovern’s running mate after it was revealed that he had been hospitalized three times for depression and undergone electroshock therapy. In 1988, both George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis insisted they had never undergone psychiatric treatment, after The Washington Times reported on rumors related to Dukakis’ mental health. Then-President Ronald Reagan drew some criticism for making fun of the Dukakis controversy by saying, “I’m not going to pick on an invalid.” Whatever happens over the next three months, any rumors and speculation along those lines will be the domain of the media and political partisans — not psychiatrists. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS The effort to plant the seeds of white nationalism in the political mainstream, where they might blossom into pro-white political coalitions that appeal to a broader swath of Caucasian voters, will not be easy, according to the chairman of the American Nazi Party. But Rocky Suhayda thinks there is one political figure who presents a “real opportunity” to lessen the load — Donald Trump. “Now, if Trump does win, OK, it’s going to be a real opportunity for people like white nationalists,” Suhayda declared on his radio program last month. Audio from the radio program was posted Saturday by BuzzFeed, which noted that Suhayda has in the past avoided making statements about Trump out of concern that he might harm the businessman’s candidacy. Suhayda is far from the first avowed white supremacist to publicize his support and enthusiasm for Trump. Earlier this year, Rachel Pendergraft — the national organizer for the Knights Party, a standard-bearer for the Ku Klux Klan — told The Washington Post the KKK had begun using Trump’s candidacy as a new conversation starter to recruit followers. And on his radio show in February, David Duke — a former KKK leader and a current U.S. Senate candidate from Louisiana — said, “Voting against Donald Trump at this point is really treason to your heritage.” PETER HOLLEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FEEL-GOOD STORIES

Sam Mikulak is one of five U.S. men competing against seven other countries in tonight’s team finals.

Forget about London U.S. men’s gymnastics aims to put past aside and capture a medal GYMNASTICS Four years ago in London, the U.S. men’s gymnastics team stood on a lofty perch, qualifying first for the team competition at the 2012 Olympics. But once the top eight nations competed for medals, the Americans finished fifth, well shy of podium honors. After qualifying Saturday for today’s team finals with the second-highest score (270.405) of the preliminary round, the team is vowing to write a different story in Rio de Janeiro. “We’re going to make sure we come in with a chip on our shoulder. We’ve done nothing but

qualify,” said seven-time NCAA champion Sam Mikulak, who also qualified for the men’s individual all-around finals. On Saturday at Rio Olympic Arena, the U.S. placed ahead of Russia (269.612) and was only edged by China (270.461). Japan, Britain, Brazil, Ukraine and Germany are the other five teams competing for medals. U.S. Olympic coach Mark Williams, who coached three members of the five-man Rio squad at Oklahoma, believes the disappointment of London has had a transformational effect that will help the 2016 squad. “We’ve been there before,” Williams said after a congratulatory visit from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. “I think they understand they have a job to

do on Monday night that is very different than coming in and qualifying. They want to finish things this time.” The team had to overcome a turbulent Saturday just to make the medal round. The lights went out on Chris Brooks in the middle of his high bar routine, and Brooks and Mikulak each fell off the pommel horse.

Williams called the overall effort “not bad,” acknowledging his disappointment in the two shaky pommel horse routines. But led by Mikulak, 23, the Americans posted the highest scores in their group on floor exercise, parallel bars and high bar. His individual score of 89.041 placed him seventh. Brooks (86.331) also earned one of 24 spots in the all-around finals. Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev posted the top all-around score (91.964). Williams said he would emphasize focus and consistency to the team before the finals. “It’s going to be really loud, and guys are going to be in the middle of routines when that happens,” he said. “They’re going to have to be ready for that.” LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Ledecky wags tongue after setting Olympic record

Katie Ledecky set a new Olympic record in Sunday’s preliminary round of the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:58.71, four seconds faster than the next-best time in the four preliminary heats and just shy of her own world record mark of 3:58.37 set in 2014. After the race, Ledecky stuck her tongue out like Michael Jordan. She had another shot at breaking her own record in the finals, which ended after Express’ deadline Sunday. Russia gets Paralympic ban after their eligibility in Rio de Janeiro was decided by individual sports federations — Paralympic leaders expelled one of its most significant members. Russia’s years of doping deception, including tampering with samples at the 2014 Olympics and Paralympics in Sochi, were outlined last month by the World Anti-Doping Agency. “The facts really do hurt,” IPC President Philip Craven said. “They are an unprecedented attack on every clean athlete who competes in sport. broken, corrupted and entirely compromised.” Russia finished second in the medal standings at the 2012 London Paralympics and had 267 athlete slots for Rio in 18 sports, which will only now be filled in September if an appeal is successful. The Paralympic movement is anticipating further evidence of positive tests being covered up that Canadian law professor Richard McLaren did not find in his initial 76-day investigation for WADA. The IPC said it has evidence

of manipulated doping tests relating to 27 competitors in eight Paralympic sports. “It shows a blatant disregard for the health and well-being of athletes. ... Their thirst for glory at all costs has severely damaged the integrity and image of all sport,” Craven said. Unlike the IOC, which doesn’t run any sports federations, the IPC does govern some disciplines. “There are clearly very, very different circumstances from them to us,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. Marlins’ Ichiro Suzuki becomes 30th player in MLB history to reach 3,000 hits

Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu obliterated the world record in the 400-meter Individual Medley on Saturday night. The electrifying showing stirred up plenty of buzz outside the pool, too, which began after a controversial remark from NBC’s telecast. Hosszu’s husband and coach Shane Tusup was on the pool deck wildly celebrating his wife’s gold medal. When the camera identified Tusup, NBC announcer Dan Hicks called him “the man responsible” for the record-breaking performance. “You did it — not your husband” was among the social media messages posted following NBC’s coverage. Hosszu recorded a time of 4:26:36 to win gold, beating the old record by nearly two seconds. American Maya DiRado earned silver by finishing nearly five seconds behind Hosszu, who earned redemption with her first Olympic medal after a disappointing showing at the London Games in 2012. Hicks responded to the online criticism by saying, “with live TV, there are often times you look back and wished you had said things differently.” The commentator said Hosszu has told him she credits her husband for improving her strength training, intensity and confidence, which was shattered when she lost the same event four years ago, he said. A-Rod offers emotional goodbye from baseball Slugger’s controversial career set to conclude Friday against the Rays MLB Alex Rodriguez announced Sunday he will play his final game this week, culminating a career in which the three-time MVP etched his name in baseball history while becoming a polarizing figure amid a full-season suspension for steroid use. Rodriguez, an infielder and designated hitter for the Yankees, will make his farewell Friday in New York against Tampa Bay. Following the game, he will be released in order to sign a deal to become a special adviser with the club.

“Saying goodbye may be the hardest part of the job, but that’s what I’m doing today,” Rodriguez said as he choked back tears at a news conference in New York. Rodriguez, 41, ranks fourth all-time in home runs with 696, behind only Barry Bonds (762), Henry Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714). He hasn’t been in the lineup since Aug. 2, fueling speculation he would retire. The five-time home run champion is hitting just .204 this season. With New York in 2007, he won his final MVP award by leading the league in homers (54) RBIs (156) and runs (143). Two years later, Rodriguez won his only World Series ring as the Yankees beat Philadelphia in six games. The Mari ners made the

eventual two-time Gold Glove winner the No. 1 overall pick in the 1993 draft. In 2000, Rodriguez signed a 10-year, $252 million deal, the largest in professional sports history, with Texas. In 2007, after joining the Yankees in a trade for Alfonso Soriano three years earlier, he re-signed for $275 million over 10 years, setting another record for the richest deal in pro sports history. In 2009, Rodriguez admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs. He was suspended for the entire 2014 season. “Hopefully I’ll be remembered as someone who tripped and fell a lot but kept getting up,” Rodriguez said Sunday.

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Hitchcock/Truffaut’

ALEX NEWELL

9 p.m. tonight on HBO

Premiering during Alfred Hitchcock’s birthday month, this documentary revisits the legendary weeklong conversation he had in 1962 with fellow director Francois Truffaut. Bob Balaban narrates.

Alex Newell’s music video for “Basically Over You” makes it clear that the person he’s basically over is a man.

They’re seen and heard MUSIC VIDEOS This past Friday, beloved artist Frank Ocean once again disappointed fans by failing to drop his highly anticipated album “Boys Don’t Cry,” as had been rumored. Ocean stunned listeners with his 2012 debut album, “Channel Orange,” on which he sang candidly about his love for another man. Singing about an honest desire for someone of the same sex is a rarity in mainstream music, and the LGBT community has often struggled to find its footing in a pop world that celebrates queerness more for shock value than as a genuine experience. Recently, that’s started to change. Ocean and several other queer artists like him have been fighting to shirk that stigma. They’re celebrating their sexuality and gender identity in both

their songs and the way they present themselves in music videos. Ocean makes his queerness apparent by using male pronouns to talk about the object of his affection. Using a correct pronoun to identify a lover might not seem like a big change to some, but it’s turned into one of the most defiant ways that artists can identify their same-sex relationships. Synth-pop duo Tegan and Sara know this all too well. Both women are attracted to other women, and use their music to showcase that. “You turn me on like you would your boyfriend,” they sing on “Boyfriend.” “But I don’t want to be your secret anymore.” Some LGBT musicians opt for the “show, don’t tell” approach when it comes to expressing their queerness.

JASON MERRITT (GETTY IMAGES)

Frank Ocean is part of a wave of musicians putting their queerness front and center

Frank Ocean was hailed for being frank about his sexuality on his first album, “Channel Orange.”

YouTuber-turned-pop-star Troye Sivan is a prime example. Weaving together the series of singles from his debut, “Blue Neighbourhood,” Sivan created a trilogy of music videos that tell the complete story of a troubled same-sex relationship. There is kissing and intimacy. There is hand-holding. And there’s fighting — all of it done with two male characters.

Alex Newell, a dance artist and “Glee” alum, goes even further in his music video “Basically Over You (B.O.Y.).” Newell, dressed in drag, gets sweet revenge on a male lover, “America’s Next Top Model” winner Nyle DiMarco, who himself identifies as sexually fluid. Filled with humor and heart, the video confidently throws gender roles and dating norms to the wind. British crooner Sam Smith, who has a complicated history with the LGBT community, tells a heartbreaking tale of falling for someone who doesn’t reciprocate in “Leave Your Lover.” Smith sings of longing for a male friend who consistently chooses someone else — whether that someone is a man or a woman. Even without an album from Ocean, young LGBT fans can still see and hear queerness wherever they get their music videos. RYAN CAREY-MAHONEY

Woody Allen’s first TV project, a six-episode series for Amazon Prime, finally has a title and release date. “Crisis in Six Scenes” is set to debut Sept. 30 on the streaming service, the company announced Sunday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. Set in the 1960s, the show stars Allen and Elaine May as a couple whose lives are upended when a guest (played by Miley Cyrus) comes to visit. (EXPRESS)

‘The Night Of’ … what? We’re all tensed up with nowhere to go. “The Night Of” (9 p.m. Sundays on HBO) has been one of the summer’s most compelling dramas. Co-written by acclaimed crime novelist (and “Wire” contributor) Richard Price, this eight-part series follows Nasir “Naz” Khan, an earnest college student and son of Pakistani immigrants, who’s charged with stabbing a woman he’d just met and made love to. He’s the logical suspect — he fled her home, leaving her in a bed of blood. And he had a knife in his pocket. Yet he insists he blacked out after their tryst and awoke to find her dead. When PakistaniBritish actor Riz Ahmed stares

at you with those soulful eyes, you want to believe him. Rather than pile on absurd plot twists as TV crime shows often do, “The Night Of” lingers on the mundane nature of police work and legal work — and on the itchy feet of Naz’s bottom-feeder attorney, John Stone (given an aura of haunted weariness by actor John Turturro). An eczema sufferer, Stone scratches with chopsticks and tries unhelpful remedies, both homespun (Crisco) and medicinal (steroids). He is trapped by his marginal life as a lawyer (slogan: “No fee till you’re free”) and by his tortured feet. In fact, pretty much everyone on the show is stuck in a box — which happens to be the last

$135M

name of the detective who may nail (or perhaps exonerate) Naz. The viewer is trapped, too, by the unbearable suspense. Then came last night’s airing, which took a few odd turns. A storyline about Stone’s impotence (triggered by steroids and counteracted by Viagra) seemed pointless. His pursuit of a suspect through a dark alley was ridiculously reckless. And heretofore gentle Naz unleashed startling rage. But the show still has a wonderful eye for offbeat details. In one scene, a middle-aged prosecutor, played with heartfelt ennui by Jeannie Berlin, stares down a hostile witness she’s interviewing. “Why don’t you go?” she says in a deadpan voice. “And take a cookie” — from a pile on her desk. I hope the final three episodes make it worthwhile to have spent summer Sunday nights pondering the fate of Naz. If not, I want a cookie, too. Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

BOX OFFICE HAUL

The box office take of “Suicide Squad” in its opening weekend, following days of scathing reviews. It set a new record for an August opening, besting Marvel’s 2014 hit “Guardians of the Galaxy.” “Jason Bourne” came in a very distant second with $22.7 million, followed by the comedy “Bad Moms,” with $14.2 million. Nicknamed “Scary Lucy,” the highly unpopular statue, above left, was replaced Saturday by one more closely resembling Ball. “Scary Lucy” will be moved to another spot in the park.
