What’s in the Stanley Cup?

White House is seeking holiday decorating help It’s only August, but first lady Melania Trump is seeking volunteers to help decorate the White House for the Christmas season. The White House has also invited local musicians such as high school bands to apply to perform during holiday open houses throughout December. Those interested can apply online at whitehouse.gov/christmas.

Over the past six weeks, the Stanley Cup has traveled from Washington to Russia and the Czech Republic, throughout Canada and the Midwestern United States. At each stop along the Cup’s summer victory tour, Capitals players and staff have filled the trophy’s bowl with everything from babies to caviar to cereal. SCOTT ALLEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Last August, Penguins forward Josh Archibald and his wife, Bailey, baptized their 3-week-old son in the Stanley Cup during a small ceremony in Minnesota. The Cup hasn’t been used for any baptisms this summer (that we know of), but it has held a lot of babies — like 3-day-old Sophie, above, who was put in the bowl by Capitals strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish at the Inova Loudon Hospital.

Last month, Alex Ovechkin took the Stanley Cup to Moscow’s Red Square and the Dynamo hockey facility where he played as a teenager. He also hosted a private party at a Moscow restaurant and served Russian caviar out of the trophy. The caviar was placed in a separate, smaller bowl atop a layer of ice. Ovechkin and teammates Dmitry Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetsov posed with the caviar-filled Cup.

Capitals goaltending coach Scott Murray filled the Cup with pepperettes (sausage-like meat sticks) during his day with the trophy in St. Clements, Ontario. Philip Pritchard, the official keeper of the Cup, tweeted: “Scott Murray ... welcomes the Stanley Cup to his hometown St. Clements with his brother and Dad. Pepperettes and a pigroast are on the menu today at his party thanks to the local butcher.”

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby took the Cup to his parents’ farm in Marshall, Saskatchewan, last week. Holtby signed autographs at the ice rink in nearby Lashburn where he played as a kid and visited the Lloydminster Animal Hospital, where his sister works. He also let a horse named Munchie eat pellets out of the Cup. “Munchie has got the munchies!” Philip Pritchard tweeted from @keeperofthecup.

The Capitals drank more than their fair share of beer — and fountain water — out of the Cup while parading it around D.C. in the days after winning the franchise’s first championship. Matt Niskanen and Michal Kempny, among others, quenched their thirst with a drink out of the trophy during their respective days with the Cup. Pritchard says the Stanley Cup holds 14 12-ounce bottles of beer.

Report: 7000-series need to be rewired

Problems are the latest setback for Metro’s next-generation trains

SALWAN GEORGES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION Metro will need to rewire all of its 7000-series rail cars over the next year after internal inspections discovered wire crimping defects that were not found during manufacturing, according to the agency. The new quality-control report concludes that Metro will need to rotate each of the 548 cars out of service over a year or more to address the problem. The review said manufacturer Kawasaki failed to discover the defect during manufacturing, and the problems were found by Metro crews during inspections at the manufacturer’s Lincoln, Neb., plant. “The manufacturer for the 7000-series rail cars has failed to implement an effective system for conducting in-process inspections,” the report said. The review said that Metro should order stricter qualitycontrol practices from manufacturers by strengthening its contract language. Metro is investing $2 billion and substantial resources in the 7000-series, the agency’s nextgeneration rail car that replaces the 1000-, 4000- and 5000-series cars. The cars are expected to

constitute 748 of Metro’s 1,200 rail cars when the delivery is completed by July 2019. By last month, Metro said, it had received 564 rail cars — 548 of which had been put into service. But the findings raise new questions about the quality and durability of the rail cars, despite the fact that they have become Metro’s best-performing fleet, according to the agency’s rail reliability statistics. This summer, the Federal Transit Administration ordered Metro to install chain barriers on all of the 7000-series cars because of a safety issue where passengers with visual impairments could fall through the gap between

trains. The FTA, which is responsible for Metro safety oversight, said the existing rubber barriers were insufficient and ordered a fix by Dec. 31. Metro has said Kawasaki cannot meet that deadline because of a supply issue but says the work will be completed by May. Metro noted in its qualitycontrol review that Kawasaki has significantly reduced the number of defects on new car arrivals, from an average of 22 per car in May 2016 to six in May 2018. The agency said it is using an eight-car maintenance facility in the region to support repairs and modifications for the cars. FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

But a porn site swooped in, and the old handle began serving up a feed of “Sexy Car Babes” the next day. O’Keefe said he forgot to notify the national committee. Republicans have continued to share the old handle. Neither the RNC nor Twitter would comment to the paper. (AP)

local Police say Va. woman fatally shot 5-year-old, injured another child FAIRFAX COUNTY A Virginia mother accused of fatally shooting her young daughter was held without bond following an arraignment Tuesday before a Fairfax County judge. Veronica Youngblood, 33, of McLean is charged with murder in the death of 5-year-old Brooklynn Youngblood. The shooting occurred about 10:15 p.m. Sunday at an apartment in the Tysons area. Another juvenile, whom police did not identify, was wounded, authorities said. At her arraignment in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Tuesday, Youngblood participated

through a video monitor. She was very quiet and looked down frequently. Judge August Steinhilber at one point asked her to look up and speak louder. She answered, “I can’t look at [the] monitor.” The judge confirmed that she was being charged with killing her daughter and said she could face jail time. After the judge told her she had the right to legal counsel, Youngblood said she didn’t want an attorney. “Do you understand this is a very serious charge?” Steinhilber asked. “I don’t want a counsel,” Youngblood replied. The judge told her the court would appoint a public defender and recommended that she cooperate and “keep an open mind.”

Mother charged in daughter’s killing

Veronica Youngblood, 33, is accused of fatally shooting her 5-year-old daughter Sunday in the Tysons area.

Youngblood was taken into custody without incident Sunday night, officials said. Police said they found a gun that they believe was involved in the shooting when she was arrested.

Fairfax County court records show she married Ronald G. Youngblood, a career Navy officer, in 2009. The couple filed for divorce in 2016. According to court records, the couple continued to live together in Oakton, Va., after their divorce because she did not have a full-time job. They had joint legal custody of Brooklynn, who was born in 2012, and a teenager from a previous relationship of Veronica’s also lived with them, court records show. Ronald Youngblood sought a protective order from his ex-wife in October 2016, court records show. Youngblood is scheduled to have another court hearing in the criminal case in October. There’s a lot of red surrounding President Trump’s call for a southwest border wall. Instead of well-considered immigration policy, the wall is red meat to his red base. But for independent government examiners, the wall could fall on the red side of Uncle Sam’s accounting ledger. A new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) raises concerns about poor planning by the Trump administration that could lead to increased costs. It comes in the wake of repeated Trump threats to shut down the government if Congress does not provide the wall funding he wants. The recent volley of threats, by the way, made no mention of Trump’s hollow promise that Mexico would pay for the wall. Cost estimates have been all over the place, including $18 billion for 722 miles of barriers in 17 priority areas identified by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and $70 billion by Senate Democrats. GAO found that DHS’ strategy did not fully analyze

projected costs or properly follow the acquisition process. Rep. Bennie Thompson, Miss., the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, said in a statement that the administration “is rushing the construction of the President’s completely unnecessary border ‘wall’. In moving too fast, they have ignored necessary and established acquisitions protocols.” DHS agreed with GAO recommendations to better analyze costs associated with the wall and to follow acquisition requirements. A letter to GAO from DHS said Customs and Border Protection “is following best practices in evaluating costs, budget, and financial impact” for the wall. Not so, according to GAO’s findings. The notion that the president would advocate closing the government, denying millions of Americans services, seems like parallel-universe craziness. But these comments are business as usual for Trump. While shutting down the government is the opposite of public service and an anathema to practically all federal employees, Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, fears

no evil. The council, which represents Border Patrol agents, and the National ICE Council are the only federal unions that endorsed Trump’s candidacy. Both are part of the American Federation of Government Employees, which strongly opposed him. Like Trump, but surprisingly for a federal employee, Judd thinks a government closure would be worth it to get border wall funding. “If a government shutdown would give us the border security that is necessary, I’m

absolutely for it,” he said by phone. Law enforcement personnel continue working during a partial shutdown, so his members would not be affected to the same extent as other feds. Thompson strongly disagrees with Judd. “Shutting down the government would be irresponsible,” he said by email, urging “congressional Republicans not to give into their President’s demands for his boondoggle border wall.” Follow Joe Davidson on Twitter @joedavidsonWP

A. The student loan repayment program, although not well-known, is one of several incentives that agencies can use to recruit and retain employees. They may pay up to $10,000 a year, up to $60,000 a lifetime, to help their employees repay many of the most common types of student loans. The money is taxable, though, and recipients must agree to continue working for the agency for three years or else pay it back. Of the 2.1 million executive branch employees apart from the U.S. Postal Service and intelligence agencies, fewer than 10,000 received such payments in 2016, worth a total of about $72 million. Both the number of employees and the amount received were up, compared with other recent years, but they remain below the levels from 2010 to 2012. It helps to work at certain agencies and in certain jobs. The Defense Department uses the authority the most, followed by the Justice and State departments. Those three account for more than half of the offers and dollar value, with the rest spread across 31 other agencies. By occupation, it’s used most often for engineers, special agents, intelligence analysts, foreign affairs specialists and attorneys. ERIC YODER (TWP)

A coral reef cemetery creates life in afterlife

TRANSPLANT GAMBLE

Patients accept kidneys that had hepatitis C

MIAMI BEACH, FLA. A year after Will and Daniel Payne lost their mom, and nearly two decades since their father’s death, it was time to follow their wishes for the afterlife. As they boarded a boat with three generations of family, the brothers slipped into flippers and de-fogged their masks. Will jumped into the azure waters to secure a concrete marker mixed with their ashes at a memorial reef about 3 miles out to sea. This unusual resting place is exactly what the Paynes say their parents wanted. Buel Payne, a former Coast Guard member, and Linda Payne, who grew up on the water and loved boating, will spend their afterlife in a memorial modeled after the lost city of Atlantis, among impressive lion statues and ornate gates and pillars encrusted with sea life. It took nearly four years for multiple government agencies to sign off on this underwater mausoleum, which is designed to encourage a healthy ecosystem. Roughly a decade later, the Neptune Memorial Reef near Miami is home to the cremated remains of 1,500 people, and any snorkeler or scuba diver can visit. The Paynes are the first to

be memorialized in the reef’s expansion, which opened this summer and will make room for an additional 4,000 memorials over 16 acres, about 40 feet deep. Placements start around $1,500 and can go up to $8,000, with the priciest placements for specialized shapes like sea turtles and stingrays or for prominent spots throughout the city, like the lions. With reefs struggling worldwide against coral bleaching and other threats, the memorial’s builders are providing coral a head start. The concrete structures offer a high pH level, enabling sea creatures to flourish.

“We’re seeing animals here that we haven’t seen before,” said Jim Hutslar, the reef’s operations director and one of the founders. “We actually found a long spine sea urchin that was considered extinct in the Caribbean Sea.” Sara Thanner, an environmental supervisor for the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, said an April survey showed the reef supports more than 65 different fish, shrimp and lobster and 75 other species including sponges, soft corals and hard corals. Hutslar said, “We’re creating life after life.” KELLI KENNEDY (AP)

Patients in desperate need of a kidney transplant participated in a bold experiment where they received organs infected with hepatitis C. Their new organs are working fine, thanks to medication that got rid of the virus in all 20 patients, researchers reported Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. Researchers |say the study suggests organs that are currently going to waste might help speed transplants for waiting patients. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, almost 95,000 people in the U.S. are on the kidney waiting list but only 19,850 received a transplant in 2017, which covered about 20 percent of all cases. Elon Musk says he may take Tesla private BUSINESS Tesla CEO Elon Musk is considering leading a buyout of the electric car maker, in a stunning move that would end the company’s eight-year history trading on the stock market. In his typically unorthodox fashion, Musk dropped his bombshell on Tuesday after the stock market had already been open more than three hours, with a tweet announcing he might buy all of Tesla’s stock at $420 per share, adding, “Funding secured.” At that price, the buyout would cost nearly $72 billion, based on Tesla’s outstanding stock as of July 27, but it’s unlikely the deal would cost that much because Musk owns a roughly 20 percent stake in the company. He also said he intends to give Tesla’s existing shareholders the option of retaining a stake in the company through a special fund. The confusion prompted regulators of the Nasdaq stock exchange to temporarily suspend trading in Tesla’s stock. Musk later brought some clarity in an email to Tesla employees and on Tesla’s blog. Trading in Tesla’s stock resumed shortly after, and the stock climbed 11 percent to $379.57. Musk believes taking Tesla private would allow the company to sharpen its focus on revolutionizing an automobile industry without having to cater to investors’ fixation on how the business is faring. nation+world Former Manafort aide admits to an affair and embezzling from boss ALEXANDRIA In blistering questioning, a defense lawyer accused the protege of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort of being immersed in “so many lies,” he can’t remember them all, as he tried to undermine the credibility of the government’s star witness in Manafort’s fraud trial. Defense lawyer Kevin Downing began his cross-examination of longtime Manafort deputy Rick Gates by pressing him on his own lies to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators, an extramarital affair and embezzlement

from his former boss. Downing at one point asked whether Mueller’s investigators had interviewed Gates about his role in the campaign, prompting an objection from prosecutors. Both sides have agreed to limit discussion of the campaign to avoid prejudicing the jury. The aggressive questioning was aimed at shifting blame from Manafort onto Gates, who pleaded guilty in Mueller’s investigation and agreed to cooperate with investigators by testifying in the financial fraud trial. “After all the lies you’ve told and the fraud you’ve committed, you expect this jury to believe you?” Downing asked. Gates said he did, but Downing wasn’t satisfied. He scoffed at the

Gates ultimately relented, saying, “It was embezzlement from Mr. Manafort.” The grilling got more personal when Downing pressed Gates about a “secret life” he said was funded by embezzlement, including an extramarital affair that Gates himself acknowledged. Calif. battles record blaze Heat and abundant fuel cause biggest wildfire in state history to grow to size of Los Angeles

CALIFORNIA Firefighters struggled against rugged terrain, high winds and an August heat wave Tuesday to slow the spread of the biggest wildfire ever recorded in California, an inferno that exploded to more than 450 square miles in just 11 days. The blaze, centered near the community of Upper Lake, about 100 miles north of San Francisco, spread fast because of what officials said was a perfect combination of weather, topography and abundant vegetation turned into highly flammable fuel by years of drought. The flames were raging in mostly remote areas, and no deaths or serious injuries were reported. But at least 75 homes have been lost, and thousands of people have been forced to flee. The blaze, dubbed the Mendocino Complex, was reported 20 percent contained. Its rapid growth to an area the size of Los Angeles at the same time firefighters were battling more than a dozen other major blazes around the state fanned fears that 2018 could become the worst wildfire season in California history. “For whatever reason, fires are burning much more intensely, much more quickly than they were before,” said Mark A. Hartwig, president of the California Fire Chiefs Association. About 3,900 firefighters, including a crew of 40 volunteers from New Zealand, were battling the blaze, contending with temperatures in the high 90s and winds gusting to 25 mph. The area has few roads that can serve as firebreaks, and

firefighters instead fell back on natural barriers like streams or used bulldozers to cut fire lines. But the flames were moving so fast in spots that they blew past fire lines, forcing firefighters to retreat, said Battalion Chief Jonathan Cox of the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire. “There’s no way you’re going to stop that fire,” said Kyle Coleman, 28, who returned to his childhood home last week to help his father try — in vain, it turned out — to protect it. “A big wall of flames came over the mountain. ... I pretty much got

Centrist Ivan Duque, 42, is sworn in as Colombia’s new president

President Trump tweeted Monday that California is “foolishly” diverting “vast amounts of water from the North” into the Pacific instead of using them to fight fires. The state’s “bad environmental laws” are to blame, he said. The tweets baffled state officials. “Let’s be clear: It’s our changing climate that is leading to more severe and destructive fires,” said Cal Fire spokesman Mike Mohler. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

my dad out of there.” In all, 14,000 firefighters were battling blazes across California, which is seeing earlier, longer and more destructive wildfire seasons because of drought, warmer weather attributed to climate change, and the building of homes deeper into the forests. The Mendocino Complex is actually two blazes burning so close together that authorities are attacking them as one. The fires started July 27 within an hour of each other and about 15 miles apart. As of Tuesday, they were separated by just a few miles. In becoming the biggest fire in

California history, the Mendocino Complex fire broke a record set just eight months ago. A blaze in Southern California in December killed two people, burned 440 square miles and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings. Crews gained ground this week against another Northern California wildfire, one that destroyed more than 1,000 homes in and around the city of Redding and was blamed for at least six deaths. Meanwhile, a blaze burning near Yosemite National Park has been raging for nearly a month but is still just one-third as large as the state’s biggest fire. Still, dense smoke has closed much of the park to visitors for the past two weeks. California’s firefighting costs have more than tripled, from $242 million in the 2013 fiscal year to $773 million in the 2018 fiscal year that ended June 30, according to Cal Fire. “We’re in uncharted territory,” Gov. Jerry Brown warned last week. “Since civilization emerged 10,000 years ago, we haven’t had this kind of heat condition, and it’s going to continue getting worse. That’s the way it is.” PAUL ELIAS (AP)

Facebook’s push to gain access to users’ banking data and other sensitive financial information could help make online banking more efficient — or it could backfire among those skeptical that the world’s biggest social network can reliably safeguard personal data. The site has joined a growing race among big technology companies seeking private information once regarded as off-limits: users’ checkingaccount balances, recent credit card transactions and other facts of their personal finances. Facebook said this week that it had proposed data-sharing partnerships with banks and credit card companies that would allow users to access their personal account information from within the social network’s messaging service, Facebook Messenger, as an alternative to speaking with customer service representatives or automated chatbots on the companies’ banking or credit sites. Facebook said the data would not be shared with marketers or used for ad-targeting purposes. But Facebook’s past scandals over data privacy have left industry and privacy experts wondering how the more than 1 billion Facebook Messenger users might react to the company wanting to link their social media profiles with their private finances and spending histories. nation+world Authorities previously found 11 children living in filthy conditions

AMALIA, N.M. Searchers found the remains of a boy after raiding a makeshift compound last week in search of a missing Georgia child, authorities said Tuesday. The remains were found Monday during a search in Amalia, N.M., near the Colorado border, Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said. Authorities were awaiting identification of the remains.

The search for the boy, named Abdul-ghani, led authorities Friday to the compound where they found Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, his father, along with four other adults and 11 children living in filthy conditions. The adults have been charged with child abuse. “We discovered the remains yesterday on Abdul’s fourth birthday,” Hogrefe said. Wahhaj was expected to appear in court today on a previous warrant from Georgia that seeks his extradition to face a charge of abducting his then-3-year-old son from the state last December.

According to the warrant, Wahhaj told the boy’s mother that he wanted to perform an exorcism on the child, who suffered from

seizures, because he believed he was possessed by the devil. Despite complaints from nearby residents, authorities staged a raid only after someone believed to be in the compound put out a note saying, “We are starving and need food and water.” Wahhaj was armed with several guns when he was found. The women, believed to be mothers of some of the kids, have been identified as 35-year-old Jany Leveille, 38-year-old Hujrah Wahhaj and 35-year-old Subhannah Wahhaj. The fifth adult is Lucas Morton. BULLPEN GAMBLE

Nats debut Holland in setup role

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

The Redskins needed a new training camp approach, and coach Jay Gruden knew it. His soft summers of the past — with minimal contact and starters sitting out preseason games — haven’t worked out. After losing in the regular-season opener in each of his first four years, Gruden has begun to push the team slightly harder. The Redskins have ramped up the intensity at practice ahead of their first preseason game at New England on Thursday. Two sessions in full pads Saturday included jarring tackles that excited the crowd at Fan Appreciation Day. Next week, the team hosts the Jets for three days of joint practices that are sure to get physical. Near the start of camp, Gruden said it’s all part of a plan to field the best team for a Week 1 road trip to face the Cardinals on Sept. 9. “We’ll push the envelope and push them and make sure

we get them ready more so than we have, hopefully, for Arizona,” the coach said. Gruden isn’t a coach that inflicts wear and tear on players with no good reason. And the collective bargaining agreement allows one padded practice per day during two-adays, so Gruden is still limited. There’s no one right way to ready players for the season. Marty Schottenheimer’s lone Redskins camp was straight out of the “Junction Boys” playbook for brutality. On the first day of camp in 2001, the coach invited fans on the field to watch a “bull in the ring” drill, which calls on a running back to batter through a linebacker as teammates encircle the action. Schottenheimer imposed brutal conditions with two padded practices per day and still opened the season 0-5. He was fired after going 8-8. By contrast, Jim Zorn’s camp in 2008 was easily the softest in recent memory, and the Redskins started 6-2 before finishing 8-8. Under Gruden, Washington

has averaged just 12.3 points per game in season openers. The club has lost two of its first three games in three of the four years. Maybe it’s time for the coach to play his starters deeper in preseason games. For decades, the Redskins used the traditional system of playing regulars for one quarter in the first exhibition, two in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth. Gruden has resisted using starters after halftime in the third game, and he doesn’t play starters in the finale at all. Then everyone wonders why

the offense looks stale. Limiting physical activity doesn’t protect the players, either. Redskins linebacker Zach Brown was injured in the first 45 minutes of camp before hitting anyone. Nose tackle Daron Payne is missing two weeks n. after his ankle was stepped on. d Receiver Josh Doctson injured his shoulder diving for a pass. August practices are meantt to push players hard, and finally Gruden sees why.

Washington on Tuesday announced the signing of free agent reliever Greg Holland with hopes that the former closer can find a role in the middle innings. Holland was 0-2 with a 7.92 ERA in 32 games with the Cardinals before being designated for assignment on July 27. He worked out for the club Monday and made his Nationals debut a day later in the first game of a doubleheader against the Braves. In an 8-3 win over Atlanta, Holland allowed no hits, struck out three and walked one in the eighth. A three-time All-Star with 186 career saves, Holland is expected to pitch mostly in the sixth or seventh innings. (AP)

Christian, 32, attended Emory & Henry College (Va.) and worked four seasons as an assistant coach with Oklahoma City’s G League affiliate. His start in 2014 coincided with Wizards

coach Scott Brooks’ last season leading the Thunder. Mensah-Bonsu, 34, played locally at George Washington University before a pro career in the NBA, Europe and the

Since retiring in 2015, MensahBonsu spent a year working as a regional representative with the National Basketball Players Association before joining the Spurs in 2016 as an advance pro scout. The Go-Go still must finalize hires for the rest of the coaching staff as well as prepare for the G League expansion draft on Aug. 22 and upcoming local tryouts. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK

Her ‘Sunset’ is striking and distinct

Backlash to Church’s NRA views shows why country stars stay quiet MUSIC Country music is the rare genre that has sat out politics almost completely over the past two years. After the Las Vegas massacre in October, in which 58 people were shot and killed at a country music festival, there was increased pressure for mainstream Nashville stars to talk about gun rights. A few did. But most stayed quiet. Given what happened with Eric Church recently, you can bet those silent singers feel justified. The singer shared his opinion about politics and the National Rifle Association. And it played out exactly the way you might have thought it would. In a Rolling Stone cover story published July 25, Church addressed the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas. Church headlined two nights before the shooting, and still suffers from

guilt that he was the reason some people attended the event. “I felt like the bait: People come to see you play, then all of a sudden they die?” Church said. “That is not an emotion that I was prepared to deal with. It wrecked me in a lot of ways.” T h e i nter v iewer a ske d if Church, a gun owner, had changed his mind on guns after the shooting. Church responded, “A little.” “There are some things we can’t stop,” he added. “But we could have stopped the guy in Vegas.” Asked why nothing had been done, he said: “I blame the lobbyists. And the biggest in the gun world is the NRA.” Although Church gave a long answer about the lack of action on gun violence in general, most people zeroed in on “Las Vegas” and “the NRA” in the same paragraph. Headlines rolled in, most commonly along the lines of: “Eric Church blames NRA for Las Vegas shooting.” Reading the story, that isn’t what Church said. But in this era of o sound bites spreading

Speak up, or shut up and play guitar?

A cautionary tale? Eric Church’s comments on gun control resulted in comparisons to the Dixie Chicks, whose popularity fell after the band made negative comments about President George W. Bush in 2003. “NRA members are the heartbeat of country music,” NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch said. “And they have a long memory, just ask the Dixie Chicks.” E.Y.

rapidly online from increasingly questionable sources, it doesn’t matter. There was some support and gratitude that he spoke out, but lots of anger from fans. Church, who declined to

comment on the backlash, has some of the most loyal fans in country music, so it’s unlikely he’ll see much real impact. But any singer who views the negative reaction will have even less desire to jump into the fray. After all, the thinking goes, why risk it? Even if you make a thoughtful argument, this is just one in a long list of examples of how the internet could boil it down to a simple phrase. Nashville singers have a powerful and unique platform to speak out on current events. Most decline to use it. And the reaction to Church just gave them another reason not to.

The start of Amanda Shires’ new album, “To the Sunset,” sounds like a spin of the dial on an old radio struggling to find a station amid the static. Will it be country music? Pop? Rock? Shires is way out there, an unclassifiable original. And the record, which came out Friday, is her best work yet. It starts on “Parking Lot Pirouette” with her quirky, quavery alto, which is processed and multi-tracked to excellent effect. A fine supporting cast includes her husband, Jason Isbell. And Shires serves up quotable couplets about champagne, clothes envy and music versus sports. These songs would sound good on anyy radio, old or new. STEVEN WINE (AP)

Tender scenes onstage increasingly call for outside consultation

DAVE ADAPTED FROM THE OSCAR-NOMINATED FILM

“INSPIRED … BRILLIANT.”

Communication and consent are two key aspects of choreographing an intimate scene onstage.

for themselves can be unpredictable, even among actors who mean well. And there are some actors who don’t mean well. “We’ve definitely read stories in the news about people willfully taking advantage of another actor,” Sucher says. “When there’s nobody responsible for setting clear boundaries, it gets very confusing.”

Cardi B set for Global Citizen Festival on Sept. 29

Sucher became aware of the need for intimacy direction after reading about the Profiles Theatre scandal in Chicago, where an artistic director and actor was accused of taking advantage of cast members for years. Sucher is studying with Intimacy Directors International, which began two years ago, and is creating a standardized approach to intimacy direction that stresses context, communication, consent, choreography and closure. “Just about everybody in the theater either has a story that they either have experienced, enabled or committed,” says Tonia Sina, co-founder of IDI. “A lot of people leave the theater because of trauma, because they don’t ever want to be onstage again. They switch industries, because of how abusive it could be. So we’re just hoping that we can make the industry safer and make it a more welcoming place.” ROGER CATLIN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

It turns out the direction of a moment like this is more complicated than “and then they kiss.”

STAGE When it was time for the big sex scene in the world premiere of “Switch” at the Logan Fringe Arts Space earlier this summer, it wasn’t enough to let the actors wing it. It was time to call in an intimacy consultant. Just as plays have used fight consultants for decades, both for the safety of the actors onstage and to ensure convincing portrayals, now the title of intimacy director, choreographer or consultant is appearing more often in the credits. “As an actor, I can’t tell you the number of times where I’ve been told by a director, ‘So, kiss there,’ without any further direction or insight on where a person’s hands go, who initiates, who stops, how long does it go?” says Emily Sucher, the intimacy consultant for “Switch.” “If somebody is involved in a kiss, and an actor slips a tongue in somebody’s mouth when they’re not expecting it, that could really startle somebody.” The effect on the actor would be to become tense onstage and affect the performance. But it could go deeper. “I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that a lot of people have experienced some type of trauma,” Sucher says. “Someone could innocently stumble upon something that could make someone else freeze up. They may not mean to, but if the boundaries aren’t set from the beginning, if they don’t have clear, precise choreography, someone could end up being hurt.” Leaving cast members to fend

Happy (almost) separation anniversary! Angelina Jolie alleged in a court filing Tuesday that husband Brad Pitt hasn’t paid any “meaningful” child support since the pair began divorce proceedings a year and a half ago, NBC News reported. A source close to Pitt told Page Six that Pitt has fulfilled his commitments, and called Jolie’s filings a “publicity stunt.” Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in September 2016. The two have six children. (EXPRESS)

A New Jersey woman recently picked up Keith Urban’s tab at a Wawa in Medford, N.J., without realizing who he was, CBS Philadelphia reported. On Friday, Ruth Reed saw a man whose card didn’t seem to work, so she came to his aid and paid for him. The man then introduced himself as “Keith.” “Do people ever tell you that you look like Keith Urban?” she asked. Reed said Urban then told her, “I am Keith Urban,” but she didn’t believe him. When she saw Urban’s bodyguards, she realized he wasn’t lying. “He really could have said, ‘Lady, get away from me,’ and he didn’t, he was very kind,” Reed told CBS Philadelphia. (EXPRESS)

Gun control debate finds unlikely public forum

What’s the opposite of ‘Facebook official’?

Jamie Watson, the husband of Jamie Lynn Spears, posted a photo to Instagram on Monday of his 10-year-old stepdaughter, Maddie, holding a shotgun with the caption: “Getting her ready for dove season.” Commenters called out the couple for letting the child hold a gun, according to Page Six, with some criticizing Spears and Watson and others coming to their defense. (EXPRESS)

Kourtney Kardashian and her boyfriend of almost two years, Younes Bendjima, have broken up, TMZ reported. Sources told TMZ that Kardashian, 39, initiated the split from Bendjima, 25. They have unfollowed each other on Instagram. Bendjima was photographed in Mexico on Monday, getting close with former Las Vegas waitress Jordan Ozuna, who has been linked to Tyga and Justin Bieber in the past. (EXPRESS)
