A Chinese tourist who lost his wallet in Germany last month signed the wrong paperwork and ended up being placed in a refugee home. Instead of going to police to file a report, the man somehow ended up at an office that gave him an asylum application. A Red Cross official said signing the application “set machinery in motion that he couldn’t get out of.” It took officials 12 days to put the story together and send the 31-year-old tourist on his way. Silver Spring bus stop voted ‘sorriest’ in U.S. @NOVACARZ VIA INSTAGRAM
VIRGINIA Everyone has struggled with a parking space at least once, but few of us have struggled this expensively. A woman driving a MercedesBenz convertible Saturday morning ran over a nearly $300,000 red Ferrari 458 Speciale parked behind her. The collision occurred in front of Katie’s Cars & Coffee in Great Falls, Va., where car enthusiasts gather Saturday mornings. A bystander captured the collision on video, which showed witnesses aghast and pointing at the incident as it unfolded. “That’s a big, big problem,” an onlooker is heard saying. In the video, the driver, with two children in the back seat, is seen just after she reversed into the Ferrari, her back tire on top of the car. She appears to unsuccessfully try to drive off the car, causing further damage.

DUBIOUS HONOR
The driver of a Mercedes-Benz reversed onto the hood of a Ferrari 458 Speciale on Saturday outside Katie’s Cars & Coffee in Great Falls, Va.
The Ferrari’s car alarm is ringing throughout the incident. When the driver gets out of the car and realizes the extent of what occurred, she appears shaken and says, “Oh, my God.” A man approaches and then appears on the video, saying, “Are you serious? That’s about the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.” Fairfax County police say they were dispatched to the scene in the 9900 block of Georgetown Pike about 8 a.m. Saturday. No
police report was filed and officers were on the scene for about 30 minutes, helping the two car owners exchange insurance information. Tawny Wright, a spokeswoman for the police department, said there was no further incident between the parties involved. “I know it would have looked different if it was a Honda and a Honda,” Wright said. “There was nothing unusual for us.” PERRY STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
A Silver Spring bus stop has been voted the “Sorriest bus stop in America,” an honor that has prompted Montgomery County to explore possible improvements. The bus stop at Route 29 and Crestmoor Drive took the spotlight last week as it easily advanced to the finals of the Streetsblog contest. Montgomery officials say they have asked the State Highway Administration to review options for making the bus stop more accessible, including the possibility of adding a crosswalk or traffic light. Resolve amid tragedy In Ellicott City, a town built on history and a river, cleanup is part of the culture

Despite alarm, riders survive Surge No. 6

JABIN BOTSFORD (THE WASHINGTON POST)
FOR AN EXTENDED VERSION OF THIS STORY,
TRANSPORTATION Congratulations, everybody: Surge No. 6 is over. SafeTrack’s first encounter with the Red Line turned out to be … not so terrible. Transportation officials had warned that the sixth SafeTrack surge would have the second-largest impact of the whole series. The fact that there weren’t reports of widespread chaos bodes well for the coming months: The Red Line will be hit even harder later this year, when Metro shuts down service between Fort Totten and NoMaGallaudet for 23 days. Even though continuous single-tracking between Takoma and Silver Spring decreased the capacity on the eastern end of the Red Line by 50 to 70 percent, Red Line ridership was only down by about 10 percent during the surge, according to Metro spokesman Richard Jordan. Jordan said rider experiences on the Red Line “seem to vary considerably based on when and where a person is traveling.” The reason for that wide range of experiences: Because of the logistical challenges of switching the direction of traffic on the tracks during single-tracking, Metro staff opted to send a couple of trains in each direction at a time, rather than alternating one train in each direction. That strategy meant that passengers who were lucky enough to catch the second in a series of trains encountered lighter crowds … and maybe even nabbed a seat!
An aerial view shows the damage Friday that a flash flood on June 30 caused to historic Ellicott City, Md.
MARVIN JOSEPH (THE WASHINGTON POST)
ELLICOTT CITY, MD. Like the rest of Main Street, 60-year-old Howard House has seen its fortunes rise and fall, like the Tiber and Patapsco rivers that have inundated this old mill town west of Baltimore with disastrous regularity since its founding in 1772. The sturdy granite hotel and restaurant was a popular stop for mid-19th-century travelers headed west on the National Road. The 20th century wasn’t as kind. But new owners put some money into it, placing a photography studio and art gallery at ground level, with renovated apartments above. Howard House was one of an estimated 90 buildings damaged a week ago Saturday, when an astonishing 6.5 inches of rain fell in about two hours, turning the Main Street historic district into a murky torrent that swept two people to their deaths. Howard County officials said they are committed to helping their county seat get back onto its feet. As structural engineers, insurance adjusters and anxious owners slogged through the water and humidity this week, trying to put a dollar figure on the damage, the future was uncertain. “This is the worst ever, much worse than Agnes,” said Howard House owner Ron Peters, referring to flooding that followed the 1972 hurricane. Nearly all of the historic district buildings have long stories, many of them arcs of success, decline and renewal. Two adjacent 1860s buildings on Main have had incarnations as the Holtman grocery store, the Laumann barber shop — which at one point offered customers bloodletting with the help of leeches — and in the 1940s a library. But time took its toll.
Residents and business owners look at rebuilding the historic downtown Ellicott City after it was severely damaged by a flash flood.
“Both buildings withstood floods and fires, substantial neglect and makeshift renovation,” current co-owner Walter Johnson wrote in a 1989 application for historic preservation. But the July 30 storm dealt a final blow, rendering the buildings so structurally unsound that they may face demolition, county officials said.
The first recorded flood was in 1780, just a few years after three brothers from Bucks County, Pa. — Joseph, Andrew and John Ellicott — founded what became a center of milling and graining. A support beam under the railroad tracks downtown marked where water reached during the worst of the floods in 1868, 1923, 1952 and 1972. There were bad
ones in between as well: 1901, 1917, 1923, 1975, 1989, 2006. But high water is more than a calamitous event for Main Street. Over the decades it has seeped into the civic soul, to the point where recovery is part of its identity, and a point of pride. “We always come back better,” said Don Reuwer, a Howard County developer who owns or co-owns a major portion of the Main Street corridor. Longtime residents said those who couldn’t tolerate the constant punishment dealt by the rivers have long since left. Those who remain have assimilated it as a part of life in Ellicott City. “You can always see it from the lifers,” said Shawn Gladden, executive director of the Howard County Historical Society. “It’s obviously sad and tragic, but it’s something they’ve done before.” BILL TURQUE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FAIRFAX CITY The mayor of the Virginia city of Fairfax is resigning after his arrest last week in which police say he attempted to trade drugs for sex in a sting operation. City officials said in a news release Monday that R. Scott Silverthorne’s resignation will take effect at noon Thursday. Silverthorne was arrested last Thursday on a felony drug distribution charge. Police say they received a tip that Silverthorne was using a dating website to set up sexual encounters with other men in exchange for drugs. Police set up a sting operation, posting a profile on the website that they expected would appeal to him. Within two days, police said, Silverthorne contacted
the undercover officers through the website to set up a meeting. On Thursday evening, police Silverthorne said, Silverthorne gave an undercover detective 2 grams of methamphetamine outside a Tysons Corner hotel before his arrest. On Friday, after police announced the arrest at a news conference, Silverthorne appointed a city councilman, Jeffrey Greenfield, as temporary acting mayor. But calls continued for Silverthorne to resign entirely. The city said it expects to follow state law in filling the vacancy caused by Silverthorne’s departure. MATTHEW BARAKAT (AP)

nation+world Police: Nothing criminal suspected in tragedy on world’s tallest waterslide KANSAS CITY, KAN. Investigators were treating the death of a 10-year-old boy on the world’s tallest waterslide as a “civil matter” rather than a criminal incident, a police spokesman said Monday, as the park and Kansas authorities endeavored to sort out what caused the tragedy. Few details have been released about the death Sunday of Caleb Thomas Schwab, the son of a Kansas state legislator. The 168-foot-tall Verruckt is one of the top attractions of Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kan. The park was closed
Monday amid the investigation. The Wyandotte County coroner’s office began a post-mortem examination Monday. An administrative assistant with the department said it wasn’t clear if autopsy results would be made public. Kansas City police spokesman Officer Cameron Morgan said no police report was available of the incident and deferred additional questions to the park. “We honestly don’t know what’s happened,” Winter Prosapio, a spokeswoman for Schlitterbahn, said. According to local TV station KSHB, however, “more than one … guest” said the harnesses on the ride were not working Sunday. Prosapio said rides are inspected daily and by an “outside party” before each season.

Few answers in slide death
Caleb Thomas Schwab, 10, died Sunday while on the 168-foot-tall Verruckt waterslide in Kansas.
Riders go down the slide in multi-person rafts. Each rider must be at least 54 inches tall and the weight of the group is limited to a total of 400 to 550 pounds.
Because of heavy demand, rides are scheduled by reservation. The park’s website says the ride features a “jaw-dropping” 17-story drop and a 50-foot drop. Verruckt’s 2014 opening was repeatedly delayed, though operators didn’t explain why. Two media sneak preview days were canceled because of problems with a conveyor system that hauls rafts to the top of the slide. According to USA Today, officials had based their calculations when designing the slide on roller coasters, but that didn’t translate well to the waterslide. In tests, rafts carrying sandbags flew off, prompting engineers to tear down half of the ride and reconfigure some angles.

TOKYO Japan’s popular Emperor Akihito sent an unprecedented signal Monday of his desire to abdicate and hand power to his son, sending the country into constitutionally uncharted waters. In a televised video address to the nation — only the second time an emperor has spoken to the people in this way — the 82-year-old described how declining health was hindering his ability to fulfill his obligations. Akihito’s announcement was not a surprise. He has had health issues, including prostate cancer and heart problems. However, there is no legal provision for him to step down. The parliament will have to decide whether to amend the Imperial Household Law, a process that could take years. The emperor has no real power and is legally constrained from saying anything political, which means that Akihito, who has served as the ceremonial figurehead for 28 years, could not declare his intention to step down — which could be construed as a political statement because it would require a parliamentary amendment. Instead, he had to speak in oblique terms. Still, his message was clear. He said that simply making his son, Crown Prince Naruhito, a regent would not be sufficient because neither the retired emperor nor the rising son would be fulfilling the duties. ANNA FIFIELD (TWP)

Delta flights grounded after computer glitch
SHAKE YOUR RO-BOOTY
First, we dance … then we take over
TRANSPORTATION Behind each of the four big players in the U.S. airline industry — American, United, Delta and Southwest — there is a tangled computer system pieced together after decades of mergers that married mix-matched networks. Just what went wrong with Delta Air Line’s system Monday that caused hundreds of cancellations and delays is still being sorted out. Was it a power outage, as Delta says? Or was it more likely an internal computer glitch, as Georgia Power, the utility at Delta’s Atlanta hub, says? In either case, airline and computer experts say, it shouldn’t have happened. Computer systems and their electric power sources should have foolproof backups, they say. Tens of thousands of passengers were delayed as Delta canceled 451 of its nearly 6,000 daily flights by midafternoon Monday. The airline warned that more cancellations and delays were likely to follow as it struggled to revive its computer network. But there may be more of the same airline problems in the months to come as long-term reverberations follow a tumultuous decade of mergers that swiftly consolidated the industry. “These [remaining] airlines

have long histories: 20 years of cobbled-together systems,” said Rick Seaney, creator of the travel website farecompare.com. “It’s difficult to integrate older technology. They have hundreds and hundreds of cobbled-together things that they have to track down to make sure everything is working correctly.” Before Monday, the most recent evidence of airline computer system problems came last month, when Southwest Airlines needed several days to fully recover from a collapse in its systems that resulted in more than 2,300 cancellations and 8,000 late flights. Last summer, a United Airlines computer glitch forced the cancellation of dozens of flights and delayed hundreds more.
Southwest absorbed a new and different computer system when it acquired AirTran six years ago. Southwest is investing millions of dollars in the creation of a new computer system to replace its aging network. American Airlines, which finalized its merger with US Airways last year, is working hard to marry the two systems. Bijan Vasigh, a professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, said it may be time for airlines to invest in new computer systems to replace the patchwork networks now in place. “The cost [of Monday’s shutdown] should be huge for Delta Airlines,” he said. “I’m sure that they will try to revisit this issue.”
Clearly defying Isaac Asimov’s first law of robotics — do not harm humans — more than 1,000 robots set a new world record last month by dancing in nightmare-inducing synchronization. Standing about 17 inches tall, the RC-2 humanoids — 1,007 of them — set a Guinness record for the most robots dancing in unison, Gizmodo reported. To qualify, the robots had to twist and two-step in sync for 60 seconds. The appropriately named Ever Win Company & Ltd. achieved the feat at the Qingdao Beer Festival in Shandong, China. The previous record was 540 dancing droids. (EXPRESS)

He took sharp aim at Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the speech, holding up Detroit, which has been devastated by manufacturing job losses, as “the living, breathing example” of her “failed economic agenda.” “I want to jump-start America. It can be done. And it won’t even be that hard,” said Trump. Overall, Trump offered few new details behind his economic vision, which he unveiled as a candidate last year. One notable exception was his call to enable families to “fully deduct” child care expenses from their taxes. Some such expenses are already deductible; experts say that the additional amounts will largely benefit middle- and upper-middle-class families. On tax rates, the business mogul said he would work with House Republicans and use the same ame three brackets they have

proposed: 12 percent, 25 percent and 33 percent, embracing figures championed by Speaker Paul Ryan, Wis., with whom Trump has had a tense alliance. Previously, Trump proposed tax brackets of 0 percent, 10 percent, 20 percent and 25 percent. “For many American workers, their tax rate will be zero,” said Trump. Trump also announced that as president, he would sign an executive order creating a temporary regulatory moratorium on new agency regulations. “I am going to cut regulations massively. Massively,” he said for emphasis. Freezing all pending federal regulations would include many
Wall Street regulations created by the Dodd-Frank legislation passed in the wake of the financial crisis. Trump’s energy agenda, meanwhile, would open new sections of American coastal waters to offshore oil drilling and sweep away the Obama administration’s efforts to fight climate change. At a rally in St. Petersburg, Fla., Clinton assailed Trump’s plan as an outdated replica of previous Republican pitches, saying it would “give super big tax breaks to large corporations and the really wealthy” and “basically just repackage trickle-down economics.” She added: “You know that old saying, ‘Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice shame on me?’”
The GOP nominee continued to leave large question marks about how he would pay for his plans and avoid ballooning the federal budget deficit. He included no new details on how he would limit the cost of his tax reform plan, which analysts have estimated would reduce federal revenues by as much as $10 trillion over a decade. His child care expense plan would presumably raise that cost even further, as would an infrastructure spending plan that he has said could cost more than $500 billion. In his remarks, Trump said he would offer more details in the coming weeks. SE AN SULLIVAN AND JIM TANKER SLE Y (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS Fifty former national security officials, all of whom have served under Republican presidents from Richard Nixon to George W. Some have decided to vote for Hillary Clinton, while others intend to sit out the election or write in another name. “We also know that many have doubts about Hillary Clinton, as do many of us,” they said. “But Donald Trump is not the answer to America’s daunting challenges and to this crucial election.” It was signed by, among others, Michael Chertoff and Tom Ridge, former secretaries of homeland security; Michael Hayden, a former director of the CIA and the National Security Agency; John Negroponte, former director of national intelligence and deputy secretary of state; and Robert Zoellick, a deputy secretary of state, president of the World Bank and U.S. trade representative under George W. Two foreign professors kidnapped at gunpoint
Family of ‘Clock Boy’ sues his former school
Two foreign university professors, one American and one Australian, were kidnapped at gunpoint from a vehicle Sunday evening near the Kabul campus of the American University of Afghanistan, municipal police officials said early Monday. Neither has been publicly identified. This was the first reported abduction linked to the private co-ed university, which has attracted numerous visiting instructors from the U.S. and other Western countries since opening in 2004. Police said no group has demanded ransom or claimed responsibility for the abduction. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The family of Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old Muslim boy who was arrested after bringing a homemade clock to school, filed a federal lawsuit Monday against Texas school officials, saying the incident violated the boy’s civil rights, prompted death threats and forced them to leave the U.S. Ahmed was arrested at his suburban Dallas high school in September and charged with having a hoax bomb. Police later dropped the charge, but he was suspended for three days, and his family pulled him out of the school. The suit claims the school district discriminated against Ahmed because of his religion. (AP)

GYMNASTICS When Simone Biles, the supernova of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, stuck the landing on a near-flawless balance beam routine at Rio Olympic Arena, she let out a squeal. With it, Biles sealed an American rout of Sunday’s qualifying sessions and bounced directly into the embrace of four adoring teammates. U.S. national team director Martha Karolyi told her gymnasts that she loved them. And when informed of their final margin — a whopping 10 points ahead of China, their nearest competitor — the 73-year-old Karolyi jumped up and down and said, “I love you even more!” With a dominating display of might, the U.S. women reinforced their status as the undeniable favorite in the team final today (3 p.m., nbcolympics.com, 8 p.m.,

Biles scored 62.366, Aly Raisman registered 60.601 and Gabby Douglas had 60.131. While Biles posted the highest score on three events, fellow American Madison Kocian earned the top score on the uneven bars, her signature event. All five U.S. women qualified for at least one apparatus final. Ranging in age from 16 to 22, the gymnasts celebrated their display of dominance in a manner rarely seen. FIELD HOCKEY For the U.S. women’s field hockey team, no foes are too daunting. The Americans opened their Olympic tournament against two nations ranked among the top three in the world, and they’ve toppled both. “We love to be the underdog,” said captain Lauren Crandall, competing in her third Olympics. “Even if we are to be No. 1 in the world someday, we’ll still feel like the underdog.” The U.S. entered the tournament ranked No. 5 in the world before upsetting third-ranked Australia 2-1 on Monday and topping No. 2 Argentina by the same score two days earlier. With six points already locked up, the U.S. is well-positioned to advance out of pool play. The top four teams in the six-team pool will advance to the quarterfinals, which begin next week. After Monday’s victory, the American women were leading their pool. At the London Olympics in 2012, the Americans finished last, losing five of their six games and managing just five goals for the entire tournament. “We felt pretty bad,” said forward Michelle Vittese. “Now we carry that with us. It’s something that gives us an edge.”
WOMEN’S JUDO
The fifth-ranked U.S. women’s field hockey team downed No. 3 Australia on Monday after beginning pool play by beating No. 2 Argentina.
In Brazil, the Americans are dishing out the disappointment. Australia and the U.S. were scoreless Monday until an American penalty corner with 5:40 remaining in the second quarter. Katelyn Falgowski fed Vittese, who blasted the day’s first score. It was textbook, something they work on daily. Defender Caitlin Van Sickle knocked in a loose ball in front of the cage to put the Americans up 2-0 in the third quarter. In the same period, U.S. goalkeeper Jackie Briggs allowed a shorthanded goal to Australia’s Kathryn Slattery.
Australia had one final shot to tie the score with a final penalty corner opportunity with 1:48 remaining. Jodie Kenny’s shot went upstairs, and Briggs (six saves) had no problem deflecting it skyward. “She’s a ninja,” Van Sickle said of Briggs. “She keeps us in it.” The U.S. team, which hasn’t won a field hockey medal since 1984, will continue group play Wednesday against No. 10 Japan. The Americans won’t be considered a heavy underdog in the rest of their early-round games, even if they continue play like one. RICK MAESE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Judoka Rafaela Silva claimed Brazil’s first gold medal of the Rio Olympics on Monday by winning the 57-kilogram division of the Japanese martial art while the crowd chanted “Rafa” and waved green and yellow Brazilian flags. The 24-year-old Silva beat Sumiya Dorjsuren of Mongolia after two days of disappointment on the mat for the host country. Silva is from Brazil’s largest favela and trained at a judo dojo founded by former Olympic bronze medalist Flavio Canto. She won her first match of the day in only 46 seconds. “Everybody here knows Rafaela’s history,” said Eduardo Colli, a Brazilian fan watching the final in the stands. “This is more than just a medal, it’s a victory for poor people. It’s hope for all of them.” MARIA CHENG (AP)

After many signs he would pick former Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III as his team’s starter, Browns coach Hue Jackson made it official Monday. “It’s time. Robert has earned the right to be named the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns,” said Jackson, who had promised to reveal his top QB before Friday’s first preseason game against Green Bay. Griffin, 26, beat out 37-year-old journeyman Josh McCown for the starting job after taking the majority of first-team reps during organized team activities and training camp. (AP)
Known for his speed, DeSean Jackson has added weight in the offseason to help with his blocking.
Jackson said. “I’ve been one of them guys that if I’m going to talk, I’m going to talk on the field and my play is going to show.” Jackson stretches offenses in the vertical passing game like few other receivers, so Washington could very well try to re-sign the free agent. But — like waiting one more season before inking quarterback Kirk Cousins to a long-term deal — the Redskins want to see Jackson prove himself again
before committing wads of cash. With his effort at training camp, the three-time Pro Bowler is priming himself for a productive season that could lead to another lucrative deal. “I’m just really keeping it real right here, keeping it real simple,” Jackson said. “Whatever that turns out to be at the end of the year, so be it.” Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. most fast receivers are reluctant to do. But he knows he needs to be a more effective blocker, and after missing seven games last year, he opted to fill out his wiry 5-foot-10 frame. “I … just wanted to have a little more physicality to me,” Jackson said, “and just really go out there and be that guy that plays throughout the whole season. Just expect nothing but greatness from me. I’m trying to push myself, trying to challenge myself to go out there and do things like that. That’s kind of really what it was, nothing else behind it.” The daily grind against Norman hasn’t gone unnoticed. Fans have been posting videos of Jackson scoring long touchdowns on the practice field. “The competition is there,” coach Jay Gruden said. “The last thing you want to do as a veteran or a guy trying to make the team is get your butt whupped.” If Peterson is ready for a showdown when Washington travels to Arizona on Dec. 4, Jackson says he’ll welcome the challenge. It’ll come three days after he turns 30. “It’s all right to talk, but if you’re going to talk, you better back it up on the field,”

DeSean Jackson isn’t short on motivation. Not only does he face challenges from All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman every day at Redskins practice, but he’s also staring down the final year of a contract during a season that coincides with his 30th birthday. Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson is taunting him on Twitter, too. Jackson is responding with his best training camp since joining the Redskins in 2014. Forget that he skipped voluntary offseason practices — Jackson has never looked this sharp in August. “People might be like, ‘He’s almost 30, he’s getting old.’ But I still feel like my speed is a great threat,” Jackson said. Norman has dubbed the wide receiver “Flash” for his ability to break away from corners, and Jackson is used to challengers. There just haven’t been many to silence him. In eight seasons, Jackson has 442 receptions for 7,814 yards and 42 touchdowns. Jackson, who’s listed at 175 pounds, said he added weight over the offseason — something

Chain of bad decisions led to canceled game The NFL called off its annual Hall of Fame game between the Packers and Colts on Sunday night because of unsafe field conditions created by the stadium crew. An apple a day … Despite research linking nutritious diets to disease prevention, the importance of food receives little attention in most physicians’ practices. But a shift is slowly happening. The National Academy of Sciences recommends a minimum of 25 hours of nutrition education for medical students, but a 2015 study showed that 71 percent of medical schools failed to hit that goal. And just 14 percent of doctors say they feel adequately trained in nutrition counseling. Tulane’s Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine, the first dedicated teaching kitchen set up at a medical school, is trying to change that. There, students learn to cook and provide nutrition advice to patients. The center has licensed its program to 25 other medical schools and six residency programs. There’s also now a bill before Congress to try to enforce nutrition education for physicians. CARA ROSENBLOOM (TWP)

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK
His golfing habit is driving a wedge Q. My husband plays golf one day every weekend and has done this since we met. Now that we have two young children, I resent that this large chunk of time is taken up. I am home with the kids 2 ½ days of the week and working the other 2 ½, and on weekends I need a break. He says he works hard too and should be able to decompress on the golf course. LEFT AT HOME Golf takes a long time; I get it. But that’s why parents of young children can’t do it as much. He may find it unfair that you’re asking him to adjust an activity that he’s done since before you met — but it’s not you asking. It’s the lifestyle that (presumably) both of you chose. No doubt you have long since given up whatever used to occupy your Saturdays as well — even
if it was just watching paint dry without once being expected to wipe someone’s derriere. So, to start the negotiations, propose equitable “time off.” If his money is where his mouth is, he should grant you an equal number of hours on the opposite weekend day. If not that — and indeed, that option isn’t ideal for the family — then he needs to be open to compromise.
asked us to co-sign on a loan for their new house. Our son has a history of being irresponsible with money and my wife and I told them no. They eventually got her parents to help out. Now we are treated like second-class citizens. Invitations have slowed to a trickle; emails are short. How do I repair this relationship? DAD IN VA It sounds like you have some understandable anger about the way things went down, but to move forward you’ll have to open yourself up to your son’s perspective. Of course you were under no obligation to co-sign, and your reasons were totally valid — but that doesn’t mean they didn’t sting. Your being right doesn’t preclude his being hurt; try to view it as his being wounded rather than manipulative or vengeful. The good news is, the loan is over and done with, so you can work on moving forward rather than defending your actions anew: “We miss hearing from you. We’re sorry if our stance on the co-signing was hurtful to you. We are thrilled that you got the house, and we really want to start fresh. How can we do that?” Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. MUSIC Last year, after a miscarriage, Lady Antebellum singer Hillary Scott felt like she was at the most broken point in her life. So she did what she knows best: She wrote a song about it. “Thy Will” became the focal point of the deeply personal family faith album “Love Remains,” her first solo album. “I fully believe that God showed up that day and we were pass-throughs for a message that … a lot of people needed to hear,” Scott, 30, said of the song that she wrote with Emily Weisband and Bernie Herms. “And that it is OK to question why things happen.” Her message has clearly H
resonated. “Thy Will” has topped Billboard’s Hot Christian songs and Christian digital songs charts, and even crossed over to the country charts. “Love Remains,” released in July, started as a passion project for Scott’s family. Her musician parents, Linda Davis and Lang Scott, as well as her 15-yearold sister, Rylee, all sing on the album. The music includes contemporary Christian pop and country, along with distinct nods to bluegrass, Southern spirituals and traditional gospel music. But fans have been responding most to “Thy Will.” Scott said listeners have been sharing their own personal experiences with loss after hearing the song. “It’s allowed me to connect with people on a deeper level than I have ever been able to,” she said.
