He won’t even be able to vote, but a 16-year-old high school student in Wichita, Kan., says he’s serious about his bid to run for governor of Kansas. Jack Bergerson has filed to run as a Democrat in the 2018 race, saying he wants to give people another option. “There is no law governing the qualifications for governor, not one,” said Bryan Caskey, state director of elections. “[No] age, no residency, no experience. Nothing.” (AP)
Does it seem like fruitcake lasts forever in the back of the fridge? A fruitcake more than 100 years old was recently discovered in near-edible condition by conservators in Antarctica, UPI reported Saturday. The Antarctic Heritage Trust uncovered a rusted iron alloy tin in Cape Adare containing the fruitcake, made by Britain’s Huntley & Palmers. It was a favorite of Robert Falcon Scott and could date back to his 1910-1913 expedition. (EXPRESS)

One heavy-metal hobby NORTH EAST, MD. In Brian Galloway’s North East, Md., home, the wall next to the front door was the only space large enough to display his most recent creation. The pictures on the wall came down, replaced by a black curtain rod adorned with 33 rings and hooks. Hanging from the rod is Galloway’s handmade Maryland state flag, one that will be 6½ feet long and 3½ feet tall once completed. It will also be the first state flag, possibly ever, to be made completely out of scalemail, the scales traditionally used to make medieval armor. Galloway’s scales are of a more modern variety and are made from aluminum. “It’s kind of a weird hobby,” he conceded. Galloway, 46, has spent seven months meticulously weaving together the red, silver, black and gold scales to re-create the coat of arms of Maryland’s colonial proprietors. Between the time spent hunched over his wife’s crafts table and his daily train ride to his job with a defense

contractor in Odenton, Galloway estimates the flag will have taken 200 hours to complete. With just one quadrant to go, Galloway said he’s on track to finish by mid-September. His goal is to wrap up by Oct. 11, the 137th anniversary of when the Maryland flag first flew over Baltimore. A Cecil County native, Galloway began doing chainmail — the crafting of a kind of armor made by connecting a series of small rings — 15 years ago while

stationed in Australia with the U.S. Air Force. Stuck in traffic one morning, Galloway noticed the reproduction of a Maryland crab on the back of a car. The red sections of the state flag embedded within the crab reminded him of the vibrant red scales he’d just received but wasn’t yet sure how to use. “It kind of screams the European, medieval era,” Galloway said of the Maryland flag. Galloway estimates that the materials required for the flag will cost around $1,100. But given the fact that a fellow mailer recently sold a scalemail dress for $5,000 online, Galloway hopes to make a significant chunk back. When the flag is finished, Galloway said he’ll continue to focus on scalemail, perhaps making banners of family crests. Copyright infringement laws prevent him from making scenes from Harry Potter or Game of Thrones. But he does have a request for the Arizona state flag from an Arizona native living in Maryland. The Maryland flag suspended in Galloway’s home may be the only one for some time. “It’ll never be made again,” he said. “At least not from me.” RACHEL SIEGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

24-year-old lemur dies at National Zoo A long-lived lemur, who was named Red Oak and was said to have a big personality for a small animal, died Wednesday at the National Zoo. The zoo said the red-fronted lemur went into cardiac arrest during a physical exam that was performed after he was found unresponsive during routine wellness checks. Attempts to resuscitate him failed, and it was decided to euthanize him, zoo officials said. At 24, he was old for his species, they said. Candidate scrutinized for out-of-state voting
expressline
Krishanti Vignarajah, a Democratic candidate for Maryland governor, says she is legally eligible to run despite questions about her voting history.
in 2006. State records show that the Baltimore County Board of Elections sent a request to Vignarajah’s Catonsville address in February 2015, asking her to confirm her registration status. Because she did not reply, she was listed as inactive. If she had not voted last year, the state would have canceled her registration after the 2020 election. Vignarajah, 37, did not return a call seeking comment about the request from the State Board of Elections. Steve Rabin,
a spokesman for her campaign, also did not return a call for comment. “I am legally eligible to run,” Vignarajah said earlier in the day on the Kojo Nnamdi radio show on WAMU-FM. The request from the state board does not mention Vignarajah by name. Instead, it seeks advice on whether a person who registered in the state but later voted in another jurisdiction would be considered a Maryland registered voter. OVETTA WIGGINS
Portsmouth, Va., has ended a program to trim grass at a landfill using 10 goats and 10 sheep after many of the animals likely died. The Virginian-Pilot reported Friday that 16 goats and sheep have vanished from the Craney Island landfill. City officials said they were likely killed by coyotes or other predators. Portsmouth brought in the animals three years ago, spending $10,000 on the project. The plan was to avoid having to pay for a specialty lawn mower and staff to maintaining the site’s hilly terrain. VIGNARAJAH CAMPAIGN
MARYLAND The Maryland State Board of Elections on Friday asked Attorney General Brian Frosh to weigh in on whether Krishanti Vignarajah, a former policy aide for Michelle Obama who entered the governor’s race last week, is a Maryland registered voter, which is a requirement for running for governor. Shortly after Vignarajah announced her candidacy on Wednesday, questions were raised about whether she is legally eligible to seek the office. Under the state constitution, a candidate for governor must be at least 30 years old and have been both a Maryland resident and registered voter for the five years immediately preceding the election. Vignarajah registered to vote in the District in 2010 and has voted there multiple times, including during the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 election cycles. According to the Maryland State Board of Elections, Vignarajah also is registered to vote in Maryland. She has voted once in the state — in the 2016 general election — since she registered

Recent high school grad was about to begin college at Florida A&M
THE DISTRICT A college-bound 17-year-old who was hit by a stray bullet as she drove through a Northeast Washington neighborhood has died, District police said Sunday. Jamahri Sydnor, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High in Northwest, succumbed to her injuries two days after the Thursday incident, according to authorities. The teen’s mother is a 30-year veteran D.C. police officer who once was a detective in the homicide unit. Sydnor was captain of the cheerleading squad at Wilson, active in the choir and so excited to be heading to Florida A&M University in 10 days that she posted a copy of her acceptance letter on Twitter.
A police report says two shooters emerged from bushes where they’d been hiding and opened fire on a group across the street from them in the 1400 block of Saratoga Avenue NE. One bullet hit Sydnor just as she passed by in a Nissan Versa. Another bystander was struck in the buttocks. D.C. police had a suspect in custody hours after the Thursday shooting in Brentwood — a 21-year-old man who lives less than a mile from the shooting scene and was awaiting trial on a gun and drug charge from an arrest last month. The suspect, Philip Carlos McDaniel, was arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill and appeared in court Saturday where he was ordered held until an Aug. 28 preliminary hearing. On Sunday, police said in a statement that appropriate upgraded charges are pending. PETER HERMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. The man accused of plowing a car into a crowd protesting a white supremacist rally in Virginia had been photographed hours earlier carrying the emblem of one of the hate groups that participated in the event. Vanguard America on Sunday denied any association with the suspect, even as a separate hate group involved in Saturday’s rally pledged on social media to organize future events that would be “bigger than Charlottesville.” Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced late Saturday that federal authorities would pursue a civil rights investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The violence and deaths in Charlottesville “strike at the heart of American law and justice,” Sessions wrote. “When such actions arise from racial bigotry and hatred, they betray our core values and cannot be tolerated.” Police charged James Alex Fields Jr. with second-degree murder and other counts after the silver Dodge Challenger they say he was driving barreled through a crowd of counter-protesters, killing a woman and wounding at least 19 others. Hours later, two state troopers were killed when the helicopter they were flying in as part of a large-scale

In a Twitter post, the group said it had handed out the shields “to anyone in attendance who wanted them,” and denied Fields was a member. “All our members are safe an [sic] accounted for, with no arrests or charges.”
In blog posts after the violence, the Daily Stormer, a leading white nationalist website that promoted the Charlottesville event, pledged to hold more events “soon.” “We are going to start doing this nonstop,” the post said. “We are going to go bigger than Charlottesville. We are going to go huge.” SARAH RANKIN (AP)

Charlottesville Mayor Michael Signer calls woman’s killing Saturday a “terrorist attack”
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. Police on Sunday identified the woman killed Saturday when a vehicle plowed into a group of counter-protesters in Charlottesville as 32-year-old Heather Heyer. Authorities said 19 other people suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious. When she was a girl, Heyer stood up for people being picked on while riding the bus. On Saturday, she was killed standing up for her country, according to childhood friend Felicia Correa. Heyer was among those in Charlottesville to oppose a show of force by white nationalists. “People will remember her name and remember what she died for,” Correa said. Correa and Heyer grew up in Greene County, Va. More recently, Heyer was a paralegal at a Charlottesville law firm. The friends reconnected when Correa went there for help with medical bills for her multiple sclerosis. Correa, a mother of six, said Heyer jumped in to help. Charlottesville city officials said Sunday that “Heyer was struck down by a vehicle while exercising her peaceful First Amendment right to speech. This senseless act of violence rips a hole in our collective hearts.” Said Correa: “She died for a reason. I don’t see any difference in her or a soldier who died in war. She, in a sense, died for her country. She was there standing up for what was right.” ELLIE SILVERMAN AND MICHAEL LARIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trump’s ambivalent outrage ANALYSIS Why doesn’t President Trump just unequivocally condemn white supremacists? It’s a jarring question to ask about an American president. But it’s also one made unavoidable by Trump’s delayed, blameboth-sides response to the violence that erupted Saturday when neo-Nazis, skinheads and members of the Ku Klux Klan protested in Charlottesville, Va. Trump has faced such a moment before — one that would have certainly drawn swift, almost predictable condemnations from his recent predecessors, regardless of party. As a candidate and now as president, Trump has shown uncharacteristic caution and a reluctance to distance himself from the hate when racial tensions flared or fringe groups rallied around his message. On Saturday, as Trump read slowly through a statement about the clashes that left dozens injured and one woman dead, he condemned hatred, bigotry and violence “on many sides.” The president was silent when journalists asked whether he rejected the support of nationalists groups. That silence was cheered by the white supremacist website Daily Stormer: “When asked to condemn, he just walked out of
the room. Really, really good. God bless him.” Trump denies that he’s racist or sympathetic to such groups. Son-in-law Jared Kushner, the grandson of Holocaust survivors, and daughter Ivanka, who converted to Judaism, are among those who have defended the president against those charges. Still, he has a history of engaging in high-profile, racially fraught battles. Early in his career as a developer, Trump fought charges of bias against blacks seeking to rent at his family-owned apartment complexes. He long promoted the lie that the nation’s first black president, Barack Obama, was not born in the U.S. As a candidate, he proposed temporarily banning Muslims from the U.S. He retweeted a post from accounts that appeared to have ties to white nationalist groups. And he was slow to reject the endorsement of former KKK leader David Duke. Some of the president’s friends and advisers have argued that Trump is simply refusing to bend to liberals’ desire for political correctness. Democrats frequently assert that Trump sees a political advantage in courting the support of the far right. Indeed, he has benefited politically from the backing of media outlets such as Breitbart or InfoWars. White House senior adviser Steve Bannon ran Breitbart before joining Trump’s campaign.
Hospital: Many victims of car crash improving A Charlottesville hospital says many of the patients injured after a car drove into a crowd of protesters at a white nationalist rally are improving. A spokeswoman for the University of Virginia Health System said in a statement Sunday that nine of the patients the hospital treated have been released. Ten others are in good condition. A day earlier, the hospital said five patients were in critical condition, four were in serious condition, six were in fair condition and four were in good condition. (AP)

In “Devil’s Bargain,” a new book about his role in the Trump campaign, Bannon is quoted as saying that attempts by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to tie Trump to the altright and nationalists did not move voters.
Pro-Trump demonstrators, counter-protesters clash in rival rallies in downtown Seattle
“We polled the race stuff and it doesn’t matter,” Bannon said, according to the book. The reaction from Republicans following Trump’s statement Saturday suggests there may be greater political risks for the president in aligning himself with bigoted groups. “The president needs to step up today and say what it is,” said Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., who was one of several GOP lawmakers urging Trump to be more strident in calling out the nationalists and neo-Nazis who gathered in Charlottesville. Gardner said plainly: “It’s evil. It’s white nationalism.” By Sunday, the White House was scrambling to try to clean up the president’s statement. The White House issued a new statement saying the president does condemn “white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi and all extremist groups.” JULIE PACE (AP)
Virginia State Police say the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are assisting in the investigation into a fatal helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two state troopers. The helicopter crashed shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday while assisting in law enforcement activities related to the clash between white nationalists and counterprotesters in Charlottesville. Silence in Seoul despite tensions with N. Korea
HEALTH
Study finds large increase in alcoholism
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA When North Korea makes a threat, the government in Seoul usually vents its anger, while South Koreans mostly shrug off what can seem like a daily barrage of hostility. President Trump has introduced a new wrinkle to this familiar pattern. His recent Pyongyang-style threat to unleash “fire and fury” on North Korea has been met with silence from the top levels of South Korea’s government — but worry, and sometimes anger, from the country’s citizens. Trump on Friday also tweeted that the U.S. military is “locked and loaded” in case the isolated rogue nation acts “unwisely,” escalating an exchange of threats between the nuclear-armed nations. Seoul’s reaction highlights an interesting feature of South Korea, a strong U.S. ally, trading partner and fellow democracy, where there can seem to be as much — and maybe more — worry about Trump’s unpredictable style of leadership as there is about archrival North Korea. Many South Koreans ignore Pyongyang because they have lived with near-constant North Korean belligerence, and sometimes violence, since the Korean Peninsula was divided in 1945 and

the two countries fought a bloody, three-year war five years later. The government in Seoul, however, is far from indifferent to its northern neighbor. When North Korea on Thursday repeated a threat against Guam, saying it was working on a plan to launch missiles into the waters near the U.S. territory, Roh Jae-cheon, spokesman for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, appeared on TV to declare that Seoul and Washington were prepared to “immediately and sternly punish” any provocation. Contrast that with the official silence out of Seoul after Trump’s comments on Tuesday, which seemed to take a page out of the North Korean playbook by warning of “fire and fury” if the North didn’t stop threatening the U.S. South Korean citizens and the
media have been less shy about ripping into both Trump, for his threat, and the government of President Moon Jae-in, for not taking the U.S. president to task for evoking a potential war. “Doesn’t the Moon Jae-in government have to say something about Trump’s over-the-line comments?” Jang Shin-ki, a 42-yearold man who lives in Seoul, wrote on Facebook. Moon, a liberal who favors engagement with the North, has kept mostly quiet over the past week. The Hankyoreh newspaper called for South Korea’s government to take on a bigger role in solving the North Korean nuclear problem. The paper compared the situation to “two cars speeding toward each other.” FOSTER KLUG
A study published in JAMA Psychiatry this month finds that the rate of alcoholism rose from 8.5 to 12.7 percent of the U.S. population — a 49 percent increase — between 2001-02 and 2012-13. One in eight American adults now meet diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorder, colloquially known as “alcoholism.” The research also found that all kinds of drinking across all demographics rose in that time period, with overall alcohol use increasing about 11 percent, Forbes reports. The authors characterize the findings as a serious and overlooked public health crisis. (TWP)

‘We saw children dying’ NEW DELHI State officials in India have suspended the director of a hospital where an estimated 60 children have died in the past week, including many young patients who died as oxygen supplies ran out Thursday after a billing dispute with a supplier. Officials in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have suspended Rajeev Misra, the head of the government-run Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital in Gorakhpur, where at least 30 children died Thursday night and into Friday after its supply of liquid oxygen was disrupted over an unpaid bill, officials said.

Dozens perish as billing dispute leaves hospital in India without oxygen
A girl receives treatment Sunday at the state-run Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital in India.
A Home Ministry spokesman told the Press Trust of India, citing police reports, that 21 of the deaths were directly linked to a shortage of oxygen. Witnesses had described a chaotic scene between 11 p.m.
Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday as medical practitioners — the tanks running dry — handed out manual resuscitator bags to families in a desperate attempt to save the tiny patients. “ We saw children dying around us,” said the father of one victim, who gave his name only as Vijay. “Obviously, it’s the hospital’s fault. So many children have died because of them.” The state’s health minister and hospital officials have denied charges that the deaths were caused by the oxygen bill dispute, and the state’s chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, blamed unsanitary conditions and the spread of the mosquito-borne disease encephalitis. Adityanath told reporters at a hospital visit Sunday that the investigation was ongoing.

Kenya’s Odinga urges strike
NAIROBI, KENYA | Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga urges his supporters to skip work today to protest what he charges were rigged elections. Odinga spoke Sunday to supporters in Nairobi’s Kibera slum, the site of frequent clashes between protesters and the police. Lawmakers boost spending on missiles to challenge U.S.
Floods, landslides kill 47; 31,000 families displaced
Chanting “Death to America,” Iran’s parliament voted unanimously Sunday to increase spending on its ballistic missile program and the foreign operations of its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The vote came as part of a sanctions bill mirroring a new U.S. law targeting Iran. Lawmakers stressed the vote wouldn’t violate the agreement with the U.S., but it sends a signal at home and abroad that Iran will continue confronting the U.S. (AP)
Landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rain have killed at least 47 people in southern Nepal and left thousands homeless, police said Sunday. The death toll was expected to go up, with around two dozen other people missing after three days of heavy downpours in at least nine southern districts of the Himalayan country, police said. Around 31,000 families have been displaced by the floods and landslides, which began Friday. (AP)

Two U.S. soldiers killed, but not by ‘enemy contact’
Renegade al-Shabab leader defects to government
Two American soldiers have been killed while conducting combat operations in Iraq, the U.S. military said Sunday, adding that “initial reports indicate the incident was not due to enemy contact.” Five other soldiers were wounded, it said in a statement, without providing further details. It did not identify the soldiers. More than 5,000 U.S. troops are taking part in the war against the Islamic State in Iraq, according the Pentagon. (AP)
Mukhtar Robow, a renegade leader of Somalia’s Islamic extremist insurgents, al-Shabab, has surrendered to the government. Robow, who was the deputy director of al-Shabab, is the highest official to have ever quit the group. He had fallen out with the group’s leadership, which has been carrying out a purge of its ranks. His defection comes after the United States in June cancelled a $5 million reward offered for his capture. (AP)

BACKING PROTEST

New Raider Lynch sits for anthem
Bryce Harper hurt his left knee Saturday night when he slipped while crossing first base.
Nats ‘dodged a bullet’ Harper’s hyperextended knee is serious, but he’s expected back before playoffs NATIONALS GM Mike Rizzo watched the clip over and over like everybody else. It was impossible to avoid the footage of Bryce Harper slipping across a slick first base Saturday night, his left leg planting and buckling before he flew a few feet, landed on his right side and immediately grabbed his left knee as rain fell at Nationals Park. Rizzo watched it on all the sports shows — “ad nauseam.” And like everybody else, he instantly feared the worst for his 24-year-old MVP candidate. He thought Harper’s season was over, that the Nationals, already subjected to a remarkable series of injuries, had received the biggest blow in the first inning of a game against a last-place
Giants club with no impact on the postseason picture. But those initial fears were allayed early Sunday when Rizzo watched Harper walk around and put weight on his knee. An MRI and extensive consultation with medical personnel provided hopeful news: Harper doesn’t have any structural damage in the knee. He does have a significant bone bruise on the inner portion of the knee resulting from a hyperextension, but the team is optimistic that Harper will return before the end of the season. “Although we feel we’ve dodged a bullet a bit here with any longterm ligament and tendon damage, the bone bruise is something of significance,” Rizzo said. “And we’re going to treat him
A better kind of base? ESPN’s Buster Olney noted Sunday that Bryce Harper and Adam Eaton both hurt knees this year while straining to reach and then hitting the first-base bag. Mike Trout tore his thumb while sliding into a base. Olney wrote that it could be time for baseball to find ways to try to make the bases safer. (EXPRESS)
cautiously and hopefully have him back later on this season.” Harper was put on the disabled list. Doctors said his youth and flexibility helped him avoid season-ending — and franchisealtering — ligament and tendon damage. Recovery from a hyperextended knee varies by severity.
A mild to moderate hyperextension, for example, could take two weeks to a month. Rizzo put no timetable on Harper’s return, saying, “We’ll treat it cautiously.” The Nats can afford extreme caution because they entered Sunday’s day-night doubleheader with a 14 1/2 -game lead in the NL East. Outfielder Michael A. Taylor, who was rehabbing in Class AA, was activated in Harper’s place. That still left 11 players on the DL, but shortstop Trea Turner and outfielder Jayson Werth are expected to return in the coming weeks. Stephen Strasburg, nearing a return, will throw a rehab assignment tonight for Class A Potomac. JORGE CASTILLO
In his first game in a Raiders uniform, Marshawn Lynch didn’t play a down. Yet he provided the most vivid image of the night, sitting for the national anthem before a 20-10 preseason loss Saturday at Arizona. The ex-Seattle running back, who came out of retirement to join Oakland, sat on a cooler during the anthem. He didn’t speak to the media, but has voiced support for quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the anthem last season to protest what he saw as a pattern of police mistreatment of people of color. Coach Jack Del Rio said Lynch told him it was just “me being myself.” Before a game Thursday, Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins raised his fist while the anthem was played. (AP)

Golfer Obama talks trash, wins cash
Barack Obama has more time for golf now, and “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson said recently on the “Tonight Show” that the ex-president showed skill and ruthlessness in a round with Anderson, Olympian Michael Phelps and the NBA’s Chris Paul. “President Obama talked trash all day,” Anderson said. “And he took all of our money.” Obama, who never lost a ball, said it was OK for him to win $1,600 because he is a “civilian” now. Thomas wins his first major A little luck and guts on the back nine seal a victory for 24-year-old
“So awesome, dude,” Spieth told him. It was every bit of that. With five players still in the mix in the final hour, Thomas surged ahead by chipping in from 40 feet on the par-3 13th hole, and holding his nerve down the stretch as his challengers eventually faded, one after another. Hideki Matsuyama, bidding to become the first player from Japan to win a major, appeared to recover from back-to-back

bogeys with two straight birdies on the 14th and 15th holes to get within one shot. But the championship turned on the 16th hole. Thomas faced a 6-foot par putt to stay at 8 under. Matsuyama caught a good lie over the green and chipped to 5 feet. Thomas wasted no time over the putt and drilled it in the center of cup. Matsuyama missed and was two shots behind. Thomas sealed it with a birdie on the par-3 17th.

Ex-Caps coach dies
Jordan joins his pal Jeter in group buying Marlins
Elliott’s year could start Oct. 29 versus Redskins
Bryan Murray, a coach and general manager who worked in the NHL for 35 consecutive seasons and led the Capitals to their first playoff appearance, died Saturday at 74. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2014, when he was GM of the Ottawa Senators. He coached the Capitals to seven consecutive playoff appearances, including their first in 1983. (TWP)
A person familiar with the deal said Michael Jordan has a small stake in Derek Jeter’s group that reached an agreement to buy the Miami Marlins. Jordan owns the Charlotte Hornets and is a longtime friend of Jeter’s. A $1.2 billion agreement was submitted Saturday to Major League Baseball for Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria to sell the franchise. Venture capitalist Bruce Sherman would be the controlling owner. (AP)
If the six-game suspension of Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is not reduced after an appeal, he will make his season debut at 4:25 p.m. Oct. 29 at FedEx Field against the Redskins. The NFL said it disciplined him for acts of domestic violence that violated the league’s personal conduct policy. His lawyers promised “a slew” of evidence to prove the NFL wrong. (EXPRESS)

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP Justin Thomas emerged from the shadow of a longtime friend and won the PGA Championship on Sunday to take his place among the young elite in golf. With two big breaks to start the back nine — a chip-in for birdie and a 7-iron that soared over the water to a peninsula green — Thomas closed with a 3-under 68 and won by two shots in Charlotte, N.C. The PGA Championship was the most fitting major for the 24-year-old son of a PGA professional. The event is run by the PGA of America, an organization for teaching pros. Mike Thomas, a former PGA board member and longtime pro in Kentucky, walked along the edge of the 18th green and into the arms of his son just as he became a major champion. The week began with Jordan Spieth’s quest for a career Grand Slam. Spieth was at the 18th green late Sunday afternoon at Quail Hollow, but only so he could celebrate the moment with Thomas, close friends since they were 14. Spieth tied for 28th.
Justin Thomas’ best previous finish in a major had been a tie for ninth at this year’s U.S. Open.
Usain Bolt (hamstring cramp) falls at worlds in last race before retiring
REDSKINS The Redskins emerged from their preseason opener having suffered a blow to their depth at outside linebacker. And injuries at wide receiver and tight end have slowed the progress of the offense. But as they reached their final full day of training camp practices Sunday in Richmond, the team’s top talent evaluator remained convinced that the Redskins are better entering the 2017 season than they have been at any point in recent history. “This roster is still the best that I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” said Doug Williams, the Super Bowl XXII MVP who returned to Washington as an executive in 2014 and this offseason was promoted to senior vice president of player personnel. Williams highlighted the additions along the defensive line and in the secondary as the biggest reasons to be encouraged. He also thinks the instruction of new defensive line coach Jim Tomsula will help improve that position group, just as Bill Callahan’s addition to the coaching staff in 2015 has improved the offensive line. The Redskins lost outside linebacker Trent Murphy for the season when he tore an ACL in Thursday’s preseason opener, but Williams believes their depth at that position is still adequate. The team’s second preseason game will be 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Green Bay at FedEx Field. MIKE JONES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“A hit man with a giant pile of cash? Who, me?”
MUST-SEE THIS WEEK
1 ‘Marlon’ 9 p.m. Wednesday on NBC
EPIX
This semi-autobiographical sitcom about its titular star, Marlon Wayans, follows a kooky family man who is trying his best to co-parent his two kids (Amir O’Neil and Notlim Taylor) with his ex-wife (Essence Atkins).
Nothing short about it Epix’s ‘Get Shorty’ is a seedier, more polished take on a familiar story TELEVISION Reboots continue to prove there’s nothing new under the sun, but “Get Shorty,” a dark and satisfying 10-episode series on Epix, makes a persuasive case for recycling. Based primarily in spirit on the 1990 Elmore Leonard novel, the series is a fine upgrade from the 1995 film version that starred John Travolta in his “Pulp Fiction” afterglow. This “Get Shorty” succeeds mainly by making a viewer forget that anything else came before, and shouldn’t that be the goal of all remakes? Creator/showrunner Davey Holmes (whose writing credits include “Shameless” and “In
Treatment”) and co-executive producers Allen Coulter (“The Sopranos”) and Adam Arkin have ripped “Get Shorty” down to the studs, remodeling it with a longer arc and richer context. It’s still about a hit man who tries to make it in the movie business, but this time there’s a “Breaking Bad” sense of desert seediness matched with naive Hollywood scheming that feels somehow fuller and more authentic than past iterations. If nothing else, “Get Shorty” proves just how good the people who make TV are at making TV — even here on Epix, a cable outfit that you are welcome to hunt for on your own stormy sea of content providers. Should you find it, enjoy. Chris O’Dowd offers a sweet combination of antiheroic hope and misery as Miles Daly, an introspective
Irishman who is in a personal rut, separated from his wife (Lucy Walters), missing his daughter and tired of his gruesome job as a hit man for Amara De Escalones (Lidia Porto), a crime boss who runs a casino in Pahrump, Nev. Amara sends Miles and his dim but devoted co-muscle Louis (Sean Bridgers) on a quick errand to Los Angeles to reconcile the bad debt owed to the casino by a struggling screenwriter. Once they find the poor sap and murder him, Miles can’t help but be taken in by the bloodspattered screenplay the guy was waving around in his last moments. He reads it and feels compelled to produce it. This brings him into the orbit of Rick Moreweather (Ray Romano), a washed-up director and producer who is just desperate
enough to entertain the notion. Back in Pahrump, Miles convinces Amara that movie financing is an attractive solution to her money laundering woes. “Get Shorty’s” writers, directors and cast happily show off their polished skills: Coulter directs the pilot, Arkin directs several episodes and Romano and O’Dowd are well-matched. Elmore Leonard fans will likely approve of the overall tone and “Get Shorty’s” sharp contrast between empathy and brutality. There is much to praise and little to criticize here, other than the fact that a lot of people won’t even know it’s on. But that is just one more problem that comes with turning TV into the world’s largest, yet restricted, all-you-can-eat buffet.

CIGARETTE SMOKERS NEEDED VICELAND
Here’s James Van Der Beek doing as Diplo does in “What Would Diplo Do?”
MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE
He’s a real shock jock: Van Der Beek’s Diplo has brawn, not brains “What Would Diplo Do?” is the kind of show whose premise makes you go “Huh, what?” The first scripted series from the documentary channel Viceland, it’s a sitcom/ mockumentary/music video mashup, based on the life of a real person whose nom de stage is Diplo. In case you’re Rip Van Winkle, let me fill you in: Diplo is a 38-year-old producer whose real name is Thomas Wesley Pentz and who has made hits for a boatload of singers. Among them: Madonna, Katy Perry (whom he also dated), Shakira, Justin
Bieber and Beyonce. He’s also a rapper and a DJ. So he’s very famous. And reportedly a tad arrogant. Starring on the show (10 p.m. Thursdays) as a fictional version of Diplo is James Van Der Beek, the actor whose tears made “Dawson’s Creek” overflow with emotion. The TV Diplo is a man-child with a scruffy moustache who in the first episode gets into a Twitter war with DJ/producer Calvin Harris (“I don’t trust him, he’s too tall”), spouts absurd and offensive bits of nonwisdom (“If Buddha said we should have no material possessions, then why was he so fat?”) and kindly spends time with a dying child from the “Little
$35M
Wishers Foundation.” Only, in keeping with his adult ADHD, he mistakes a staffer’s nephew for the kid and they have a blast jumping on trampolines while the actual “Little Wishers” boy sits sadly in a wheelchair waiting for Diplo. Diplo’s German assistant, Kroner, sighs at his boss’s inanity: “Sometimes I feel like your head is a little oven that only bakes bad ideas.” But Van Der Beek — “Diplo’s” creator, showrunner and writer — has baked up a weirdly funny show. It turns out the former Dawson is a pretty brilliant comedic talent. (If you have doubts, check out the intense emotional close-ups of his face in “Vandermemes” at funnyordie.com. He’s so much more than a cryface!) And if you wonder what the real Diplo makes of all this, he’s in on the joke. Diplo is an executive producer for “What Would Diplo Do?” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

trending “We shot this in June, buddy.” @ZARA915, director of communications for Vogue,
informing Breitbart editor John Carney that the cover of the magazine’s September issue, featuring Jennifer Lawrence in front of the Statue of Liberty, was shot in June. That was well before White House policy adviser Stephen Miller sparred with the press corps this month about the Statue of Liberty’s implications for U.S. immigration policy. Carney tweeted that Vogue’s Statue of Liberty cover was “attacking us,” referring to Trump supporters. He called for a “#MAGA shadow cultural industry.” Carney’s tweet got only about 360 likes, but it generated nearly 3,000 responses.

He said their travel agent told them it was tradition for couples to “take advantage” of the 50 minutes when their train went into a dark tunnel, so they made the attempt while inside their car, which the train was also transporting.
