No, a live alligator was not lurking by the side of a highway over the weekend in Danvers, Mass. Police got their first report of a gator along Route 128 at 8:40 a.m. Sunday. A couple of hours later, a person walked into a police station to report the alligator on the southbound side of the highway. The reports prompted a frenzy on Twitter. Officers who investigated found an 18-inch plastic toy alligator. Case closed. (AP)

Crown Pizza in Waterford, Conn., had a goal: make a pie with more cheeses than the Guinness World Record of 102. Manager Taso Vitsas said he used 112 cheeses in the 42-inch pizza, UPI reported Monday, but found that variety required a major sacrifice — taste. “Once I got to 30 to 35 cheeses, I realized this is not going to be a good-tasting pizza,” he said. “I tried it. It wouldn’t go down.” (EXPRESS)

Cadet marches into history WEST POINT, N.Y. Simone Askew became part of history Monday as the first black woman to lead the Long Gray Line at the U.S. Military Academy. After an early 12-mile march back to the gray stone academic complex with 1,200 new cadets she led through the rigors of basic training at “Beast Barracks,” the 20-year-old from Fairfax assumed duties as first captain of the 4,400-member Corps of Cadets. That’s the highest position in the cadet chain of command at West Point. “It’s humbling, but also exciting as I step into this new opportunity to lead the corps to greatness with my teammates with me,” a beaming Askew, still in camouflage fatigues from her march, told reporters. As first captain, Askew, an international history major, is responsible for the overall performance of the Corps of Cadets. Her duties also include implementing a class agenda and acting as a liaison between the cadets and the administration.

Simone Askew, of Fairfax, calls being the first black woman to lead cadets at West Point “humbling.”

“Simone truly exemplifies our values of Duty, Honor, Country,” said Brig. Gen. Steven W. Gilland, commandant of cadets. “I can’t believe this has happened in my lifetime,” said Pat Locke, one of two African-American women in the first class of women to graduate from West Point in 1980. “When I entered the Academy in 1976, the men did not want us there. Now, 40 years later, everybody recognizes the talent and skills women bring to the game.”

“That leadership is something I’ve seen throughout her life — wanting to be first, wanting to be the best, wanting to win.” PAM ASKEW, mother of Simone Askew of Fairfax, saying her daughter is a natural leader with incredible drive

Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, was West Point’s first AfricanAmerican first captain in 1979. The first woman in that role, in 1989, was Col. Kristin Baker, now commander of the Joint Intelligence Operations Center Europe, Analytic Center. Women make up about 20 percent of cadets, who are usually commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army upon graduation. The academy created a diversity office in 2014 with the goal of recruiting more women and African-Americans and increasing diversity among department heads and other leaders. Locke, a West Point volunteer who has been a mentor to Askew and other cadets, said she’ll hold her up as a role model for girls when she conducts workshops on leadership and academics at schools in inner cities. Asked for her advice to young people aspiring to excel, Askew said: “Allow yourself to be a vessel. Throughout my cadet career I’ve just really focused on being poured into, seeking advice, seeking development, leadership mentors wherever I could. Just truly be a vessel and be poured into.” MARY ESCH (AP)

The Baltimore Sun reports that Bruce Campbell found the jacket at a thrift store in Spokane, Wash. He noticed the uniform still had a label for a Baltimore manufacturer and was dated 1947. The jacket even had a name: COL. A. L. SHREVE. Campbell concluded the uniform belonged to Col. Arthur Lee Shreve Jr., who served in both World Wars and died in 1969. Campbell said he sent the jacket to Heather Shreve of Hampstead, Md., who has documented her grandfather’s life. (AP) THE DISTRICT

This is ‘not Charlottesville’ Residents say ugliness of Saturday’s events should not define city

because it’s now politically acceptable to spew hatred.” Freckmann stood on the block where the previous day, 20-yearold white supremacist James Alex Fields allegedly roared his Dodge Challenger into a crowd, mowing down Heyer and injuring 19 others. A street sweeper scoured the asphalt, removing whatever hadn’t been washed away by a heavy rain the night before. Pamela Buckner is scared and angry. On Sunday morning she went to church worried, she said, about whether she would be attacked. Buckner, 54, has lived in Charlottesville for 27 years. “Everything’s not OK,” Buckner said. “Everyone is on pins and needles in Charlottesville. It’s a whole lot of these racists

and Nazis and KKK and it ain’t over yet. There’s going to be more tragedy and more death. I think it’s crazy as hell.” By Sunday, there was a hint of normalcy in the music of a guitar duo and the shrieks of babies. The day before felt almost unimaginable. “Those of us who live here and love Charlottesville are just afraid that the rest of the world now sees Charlottesville as a hate-filled community, and we’re not,” Amy McLeskey said. “The things that happened yesterday are really not Charlottesville. Charlottesville is unity and love, and the people that came here are not from Charlottesville.” It wasn’t ignorance of reality that residents here suggested

for their city. They know they have problems here, like every American city has. With racism. And gentrification. And poverty. And education. What they don’t want is to allow a hate to come in and swallow everything. Franklin Barbour, a 58-yearold landscaper who has lived in Charlottesville his whole life, watched his city come apart at the seams on CNN on Saturday. On Sunday, he came to Emancipation Park to take a look around and take stock. “We walk up and down these streets, and we don’t interact with each other like we should,” Barbour said. “We need to be more together. We need to talk to each other. We need to love each other.” JOE HEIM (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Mayor: Rebel statues coming down

The mayor of Baltimore said she has contacted two contractors about removing the city’s Confederate monuments. Mayor Catherine Pugh told The Baltimore Sun on Monday she intends to “move forward with the removal of the statues.” Pugh said she wants the statues to be placed in Confederate cemeteries elsewhere in Maryland. She says she’s keeping mum on when they would come down, in an effort to prevent the kind of violence seen in Charlottesville. (AP)

Hospital: 10 patients released after fatal car attack in Charlottesville; other 9 in good condition

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. This city woke up early Sunday morning groggy and wondering, praying even, that the pitched battles in the streets, the fulldecibel race-based hate, the people crushed under cars and the helicopter that fell from the sky were all just mad scenes from an end-times nightmare. But the truth was darker. The city had a body count. Heather Heyer, 32, was dead. She lived here and worked here. Virginia state troopers H. Jay Cullen, 48, and Berke M.M. Bates, who would have turned 41 Sunday, were dead. They served the people who live here. The rally that almost no one in Charlottesville wanted and many here protested ended in death and sorrow and, for the time being at least, a fruitless search to make sense of it all for those who call it home. How, they wondered, did their quiet and beautiful little city on the lap of the Blue Ridge Mountains become the focal point of so much anger and misery? “I don’t think it will define the city,” said Chad Freckmann, who has lived here for the past 22 years and first came to Charlottesville as a student at the University of Virginia in 1978. “I think what’s happened here is the result of the politics of the moment. These wackos are coming out from under the rocks

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. A man accused of ramming his car into a crowd of counterprotesters at a white nationalist rally in Virginia was denied bond Monday after the public defender’s office said it couldn’t represent him and the judge was forced to find a local attorney to fill in. James Alex Fields Jr. was not present in the courtroom but appeared via video monitor. Seated, he answered questions from the judge with simple responses of “Yes, sir” when asked if he understood what was being explained to him. Fields also replied “No, sir” when asked if he had ties to Charlottesville. Judge Robert Downer set an Aug. 25 hearing for the 20-yearold Fields, who has been charged with second-degree murder and other counts. Downer said the public defender’s office informed him it could not represent Fields because a relative of someone in the office was injured in Saturday’s protest. He appointed local attorney Charles Weber to represent him. Weber couldn’t immediately be reached by The Associated Press. Fields is charged in the death of Heather Heyer, 32, of Charlottesville, who died after a car that police say Fields was driving slammed into a crowd of people protesting a white nationalist rally Saturday. Fields was arrested shortly afterward and taken into custody. BRIAN WITTE AND SARAH RANKIN (AP)

Teachers’ union, D.C. reach pay plan Tentative proposal would give 9 percent raise over three years

THE DISTRICT Teachers in D.C. Public Schools would receive salary increases of 9 percent over three years under a proposal unveiled Monday to end a labor impasse that has lasted since their last contract expired in 2012. If ratified by union members and approved by the D.C. Council, the tentative agreement would cement the school system’s reputation for offering some of the nation’s highest average teacher salaries. The proposal marks a political win for D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who is up for re-election next year. “I am so pleased to say that we have a deal,” Bowser said as she announced the agreement alongside D.C. Schools Chancellor

Antwan Wilson and Washington Teachers’ Union President Elizabeth Davis. “We know that teachers aren’t in it for the money. I recognize very clearly that they’re in it because they love children,” Bowser said. “What teachers also want is respect, a seat at a table and to be acknowledged for their expertise. … And that’s what we want too.” The agreement would be retroactive to last October and include a 4 percent increase for the year that ends Sept. 30, with increases of 3 percent for the next fiscal year and 2 percent for the one after that. The proposal amounts to an average increase of 1.3 percent per year from 2012 — the last time base salaries were increased — to 2019. The contract does not cover teachers who work in public charter schools. DONNA ST. GEORGE, PETER JAMISON AND EMMA BROWN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Mistakes led to shutdown of hospital obstetrics ward

Crowd attacks firefighter believed to be intoxicated

Court documents say three men and two teens bound and held four adult family members captive overnight at a Silver Spring home in an effort to rob a nearby check-cashing business that at least one intruder knew a victim worked at. According to the documents, four intruders talked their way inside the apartment on Aug. 1, claiming they were there to do work. The final suspect charged along with the four initial attackers was expected to make his first court appearance Monday. The suspects were charged with offenses including home invasion, armed robbery, false imprisonment and theft. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

D.C. regulators ordered the only full-service hospital in Southeast Washington to stop delivering babies last week because of dangerous mistakes the hospital’s staff made with multiple pregnant women and newborns, a letter obtained by The Washington Post shows. In one case, the hospital’s staff did not take critical steps to prevent the transmission of HIV from an infected mother to her newborn, according to the letter, written by D.C. Department of Health Director LaQuandra Nesbitt. The letter provides the first explanation of why officials took the dramatic step last Monday of closing the obstetrics ward at United Medical Center. (TWP)

An angry crowd beat a D.C. firefighter Sunday who authorities say may have been intoxicated or under the influence of drugs when he arrived at an emergency call for an injured child, according to police and fire officials. A spokesman for the D.C. fire department said the 34-year-old firefighter, a 10-year veteran, is the subject of an internal investigation. No one has been arrested. The firefighter suffered a broken jaw and was in a hospital Monday. The injured child was transported to a hospital in a different ambulance and treated for what officials described as minor injuries. (TWP)

A belated denunciation Two days after attack, Trump calls neo-Nazis, KKK ‘repugnant’ as he seeks to quell criticism

WASHINGTONPOST.COM POST NATION

Was the attack terrorism, hate crime or both?

Nazi and Confederate flags and, in some cases, armed with shields, batons and firearms permitted under Virginia’s open carry laws — clashed with counter-protesters, some of whom fought back with pepper spray. Yet Trump’s critics, and even some of his Republican allies in Congress, expressed outrage that in failing to specifically condemn the racist groups, the president appeared to be emboldening them. Some criticized Trump’s rhetoric during his campaign for inciting violence from his supporters and targeting immigrants and other minority groups. “While today’s delayed words are welcome, they should have been spoken on Saturday,” Vanita Gupta, president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, said in a statement. “This unconscionable delay has undermined his moral credibility as our nation’s leader.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday that the fatal car attack in Charlottesville, Va., meets the definition of domestic terrorism. The Justice Department launched a civil rights investigation into the incident, and Sessions vowed that federal authorities will seek “the most serious charges.” What those will be remains to be seen, given the nature of an attack that experts say straddles the line between a hate crime and terrorism. “The point of terrorism is to spread fear,” said Bill Nettles, the former U.S. attorney in South Carolina. “The point of a hate crime is to inflict hate on one of the specific groups that is narrowly defined in the statute.” Police said James Alex Fields Jr., 20, drove a car into activists, killing one woman and injuring 19 other people. While Fields has long sympathized with Nazi views, former federal prosecutors and investigators say his background did not necessarily mean he will face federal hate crime charges because that depends on what officials conclude might have motivated him. Nettles said he agreed with Sessions that based on information available so far, the attack would appear to be domestic terrorism, adding that the investigation could also determine that it was both a terror attack and a hate crime.

POLITICS President Trump denounced the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis by name Monday, declaring racist hate groups “repugnant to all that we hold dear as Americans,” as he sought to tamp down mounting criticism of his response to the killing of a counter-protester at a white supremacist rally Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. “Anyone who acted criminally in this weekend’s racist violence, you will be held fully accountable,” Trump said in brief remarks to reporters at the White House, where he returned after a week of vacation in Bedminster, N.J. “We condemn in the strongest possible terms the egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence. It has no place in America.” Trump added: “Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to all that we hold dear as Americans.” The statement came two days after the president failed to specifically condemn the white supremacist rally during which a woman was killed and as many as 19 wounded by a driver who reportedly espoused racist and pro-Nazi sentiments and had taken part in the “Unite the Right” march in Charlottesville. Trump, who met Monday with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director Christopher Wray, reiterated that the Justice Department has launched a civil rights probe into the death of Heather Heyer, 32, who was killed when a car allegedly driven by James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio slammed into a group of

counter-protesters. On Saturday, Trump condemned “the egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides,” sparking sharp criticism from Democrats, civil rights proponents and some Republicans for failing to single out and condemn the white supremacists who sparked the violence. Trump’s remarks, which were not on his daily public schedule Monday, appeared hastily arranged in a bid to move the White House past the backlash against his performance this weekend. Yet before addressing the Charlottesville situation, Trump opened his remarks by touting the economy, noting that stock markets are near record highs and the unemployment rate hovering at a 16-year low. And though he condemned racism, Trump did not refer to the attack on the counter-protesters as “domestic terrorism,” even as Sessions said that it met the

SOCIAL MEDIA A campaign to identify people who marched at a bloody rightwing rally in Charlottesville, Va., has so far forced two universities to condemn white supremacy and one workplace to fire an employee. Hundreds of people joined neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klan members and white nationalists for a weekend event dubbed “Unite the Right.” As marches and countermarches devolved into violence, Twitter user @YesYoureRacist asked for help identifying “Nazis marching in Charlottesville.” The anonymous user linked to photos and videos of crowds of shouting white men. Within minutes, names began to pour in. The first target was a man spotted in a crowd of torch-wielding marchers, whom users identified as a cook at a hot dog restaurant in Berkeley, Calif. By that evening, the restaurant had posted signs in its windows and sent a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle — the cook was no longer employed there. The next target was Peter Cvjetanovic, 20, who more than

Trump rips CEO who quit panel over response POLITICS The chief executive of Merck said Monday that he was resigning from President Trump’s manufacturing council, saying he was doing so “as CEO of Merck and as a matter of personal conscience” and that “America’s leaders must honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy, which run counter to the American ideal that all people are created equal.” In the statement, Kenneth C. Frazier, one of the few AfricanAmerican CEOs in the Fortune 500, said, “I feel a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and extremism.” Within an hour after the statement was issued, Trump tweeted his initial response. “Now that Ken Frazier of Merck Pharma has resigned from President’s Manufacturing Council, he will have more time to LOWER RIPOFF DRUG PRICES!” Frazier’s resignation followed an outcry by critics about how Trump had responded to protests over the weekend in Charlottesville, Va., that were led by white supremacist groups and turned violent. Many people questioned why Trump had not explicitly named or condemned neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan or white nationalist groups. When Moina Shaiq realized even her friends were scared to ask her about her religion for fear of offending her or sounding uneducated, she put an advertisement in a California newspaper: “Questions and answers about being Muslim. The ad offered ideas for questions: Are women oppressed in Islam? What is the Islamic view of terrorism? How does Islam view other religions? She set up shop at a coffee house in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Fremont. To her surprise, about 100 people turned out that day last year, and her “Meet a Muslim program was born. “It was over overwhelming, said Shaiq, a mother of four and a grandmother. Shaiq has since spoken about being Muslim and answered questions at dozens of libraries, pizza parlors and coffee shops in the Bay Area. She recently expanded Meet a Muslim to churches, service clubs and private homes, and has traveled to Arizona and Atlanta with the program. She gives the talks once or twice a week on her own time and her own dime. Similar programs emerged after 9/11, when many Muslims felt the need to engage with their

fellow Americans to dispel negative perceptions of their faith. They’ve seen a resurgence with a recent uptick in anti-Muslim crimes, which include arson attacks, vandalism, harassment and school bullying. Muslim leaders consider the recent incidents part of an alarming trend that came to the forefront in last year’s presidential election, with far-right activists portraying Muslims as a threat. Shaiq said she started her program to educate people about her faith and culture while addressing people’s misconceptions and stereotypes. She explains the hijab (headscarf) or niqab (face covering), the differences between Sunnis and Shiites (the two main sects of Islam), the rights of women in Islam, and what it’s like

to be an American Muslim today. At a recent meeting in Fremont, a man asked how she thinks people can combat extremism. “This is where you start, Shaiq said. “You understand what the faith is. Shaiq has also faced threats at her events. One man in Atlanta warned he would “slit her throat if she said something he didn’t like. He left without asking any questions. Initiatives like Meet a Muslim are important at “this time of heightened fear and xenophobia, said Zainab Arain of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “An effective way to push back against that, especially at a local level, is to gather people and have them get to know one another.

London’s Big Ben will fall silent next week as a fouryear restoration project gets underway. After chiming at noon Monday, the bongs of the iconic clock bell will be stopped to protect workers during a $38 million repair project on the Queen Elizabeth Tower. It isn’t due to resume regular service until 2021. Steve Jaggs, keeper of the Great Clock, said Monday that the clock mechanism will be dismantled piece by piece and its four dials will be cleaned and repaired. Big Ben has been stopped several times since it first sounded in 1859, but the upcoming project p gp j ct will mark its longest period of silence. (AP)

WEIRD ADAPTATIONS

Goldfish make alcohol to survive

Scientists say they’ve discovered how goldfish can survive for months in water without oxygen. Researchers studied goldfish and their crucian carp relatives. They found the fish have a rare adaptation that allows them to metabolize energy-rich carbohydrates anaerobically without producing toxic lactic acid. Instead, they produce alcohol, which is released through their gills, New Scientist reports. This enables them to survive winters in frozen ponds and lakes. (EXPRESS)

LATIN AMERICA Vice President Mike Pence tried to strike a balance Sunday in Colombia between Latin American opposition to possible U.S. military intervention in neighboring Venezuela, and President Trump’s surprising refusal to rule out that option. Speaking during a joint news conference with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Pence also declined to rule out possible military action against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whose efforts to consolidate power in the country have been

widely criticized. Pence stressed the U.S. would much prefer what he called a “peaceable” solution to the growing political and humanitarian crisis. “President Trump is a leader who says what he means and means what he says,” Pence said. “But the president sent me here to continue to marshal the unprecedented support of countries across Latin America to achieve by peaceable means the restoration of democracy in Venezuela, and we believe it is achievable by those means.” Santos said he had repeatedly told Pence in no uncertain terms that the U.S. must not even consider military action in response to Venezuela’s crisis. possibility of a military intervention shouldn’t even be considered, neither in Colombia nor in Latin America.” In Venezuela on Monday, Maduro asked the pro-government constitutional assembly to investigate the opposition for allegedly supporting Trump’s threat of a “military option.” Maduro said the truth commission created by the constitutional assembly should investigate opposition leaders as “traitors” for not speaking out clearly against the U.S. president. In addition, thousands of government supporters took to the streets in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, to denounce Trump’s talk of a “military option.”

Wildlife experts are worried Asia’s obsession with Harry Potter — and his pet Hedwig — could pose a threat to owls, according to The Guardian. The number of owls sold at Indonesia’s many bird markets soared from a few hundred in 2001, the year the first Potter film was released, to more than 13,000 in 2016, according to a report in Global Ecology and Conservation. PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN | People from the Pakistani Sikh community celebrate 70 years of independence Monday. Pakistan gained independence in 1947, when the British withdrew from the subcontinent after dividing it into Pakistan and India. The festivities began with gun salutes in the capital, Islamabad, and in the four provincial capitals. Security was tight across the nation after a suicide attack on Saturday that killed 15.

TRENDS The American workplace is stressful and surprisingly hostile. So concludes a survey of 3,066 U.S. workers by the Rand Corp., Harvard Medical School and the University of California at Los Angeles. Among the findings: Nearly 1 in 5 workers asked say they face a hostile or threatening environment at work, which can include sexual harassment and bullying. Workers who have to face customers endure a disproportionate share of abuse. Nearly 55 percent say they face “unpleasant and potentially hazardous” conditions. Nearly three-quarters say they spend at least a fourth of their time on the job in “intense or repetitive physical” labor. “I was surprised at how physically demanding jobs were,” said lead author Nicole Maestas, a Harvard Medical School economist. Only 38 percent say their job offers good prospects for advancement. About half say they work on their own time to meet the demands of their job. Fewer than half of men without college degrees say they can take a break when they want to, compared with more than 76 percent of men with degrees. Maestas wondered whether toxic conditions are keeping Americans out of the labor force. “There’s a message for employers here,” she said. “Working conditions really do matter.” PAUL WISEMAN (AP)

BIG TASK IN DALLAS

Pressure will increase for Prescott

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Key for Redskins: Defense can’t be that awful again after a career year in Buffalo in which he was second in the NFL in tackles (149). Nose tackle Phil Taylor Sr. played for the first time since 2014 and fared well, demonstrating that he can fill the middle. Defensive end Jonathan Allen, a first-rounder in April, showed he is ready to contribute. Safety D.J. Swearinger made a brief showing during which both Baltimore passes fell incomplete. And rookie free agent Nico Marley was remindful of his grandfather Bob Marley’s mantra, “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.” Marley, a long shot at linebacker, showed he might make the practice squad or even the final 53. Is it time to believe that this unit can rise to the middle of the pack this year? It seems that even losing linebacker Trent Murphy for the season to a knee injury shouldn’t greatly affect the pass rush. Chemistry takes time, especially when you’ve flipped half of the starters. But cornerbacks Josh Norman and

D.J. Swearinger

Bashaud Breeland spending last season together should make it easier for this defense to mesh. If Swearinger quickly adapts to his fourth team in six seasons, then there won’t be devastating lapses in coverage like there were last season. Swearinger is a big key. He spent the past four months in offseason and training camps talking on the field, getting players aligned properly and raising the intensity. “D.J. Swearinger brings a swagger that, you know, is very good for everybody,” coach Jay Gruden said.

The persistent playmaker of Thursday’s game turned out to be Brown, with four tackles in 12 snaps. While incumbent Mason Foster played well, too, Brown’s performance stirred up memories of former Redskins middle linebacker London Fletcher. Maybe Brown and the other e pieces will quickly come together. After years of medioly be cre defense, they’ll surely an improvement.

THE WASHINGTON POST

The Redskins have just one hope of making the playoffs this season, and it doesn’t involve a franchise quarterback. The Redskins need the defense to rise from 28th overall in 2016 to top 15 this year. They’ve turned over the reins to a new coordinator and assembled a mix of newcomers, incumbents and improbable contributors to revive a longrunning bad unit. And the first review? Not bad, despite the score in the 23-3 loss to Baltimore on Thursday. The defense would have forced three consecutive three-and-outs if not for a penalty by a rookie reserve on the Ravens’ third series, and by then many of the regulars had exited. Given the abundance of new pieces, the start was encouraging — and the group could get better. Middle linebacker Zach Brown didn’t come to Washington to be a backup

Jonathan Allen

Dallas QB Dak Prescott was superb last year, but he benefited greatly from the presence of fellow rookie Ezekiel Elliott at running back. With Elliott suspended for the first six games, the burden on Prescott will be far greater. He threw just four picks in his 459 regular-season passes and was the NFL’s third-rated passer, behind only Matt Ryan and Tom Brady. But Prescott was just 19th in passing yards (3,667) and tied for 15th in TD passes (23). Without Elliott, Dallas will need much more of a pass-first offense. If the suspension stands, Elliott will miss home games against the Giants, Rams and Packers, and road games against the Broncos, Cardinals and 49ers. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

For Harper and Nats, the next crucial game will be in division series

MLS

Bryce Harper, helped to the clubhouse Saturday, wants to try to return quickly, but he really shouldn’t rush.

thusly: How does this affect our World Series chances? It’s why Stephen Strasburg’s rehab is being watched not for what it means next week, but for what it means in two months. It’s why, while it’s commendable that Wilmer Difo has turned into a viable major league player over the past six weeks, it’s impossible not to wonder how Trea Turner’s broken wrist is coming along. The goals are obvious, and they override every twist and turn. When is the Nats’ next important game? Sure, the bestin-baseball Dodgers play three games in Washington in midSeptember, but who knows what lineups and rotations either team will be fielding w ed at that point,

given their division titles are already, essentially, in hand? So that makes the next important game Friday, Oct. 6 — Game 1, division series, almost certainly at Nationals Park, almost certainly against the NL Central champ, which might just make it against the defending world champion Chicago Cubs. Harper, it seems after Sunday’s news that he has a hyperextended left knee and nothing worse, is likely to be in the lineup for that game. Turner will likely be at shortstop. Jayson Werth will likely be back in left, making the Howie Kendrick-Adam Lind right-left combo the best pinchhitting duo the postseason will have. Strasburg could be lined

up for Game 2, following Max Scherzer’s inevitable postseason opener, which pushes Gio Gonzalez and his 2.59 ERA to Game 3. “A lot of the guys in that clubhouse who are hurt right now are working as hard as they can to get back, and I think they will be back,” Harper said Sunday. “I’m one of those guys right now that’s going to try to get back as quickly as possible … and try to do everything I can to get better every day, stay strong, stay sharp and get back — hopefully soon.” Not for the MVP. Not for a win or a loss on a given night. But for what matters to this team and that player most, and that is unequivocally October. BARRY SVRLUGA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

COMMENTARY Maybe what happened Saturday night — when drizzle and we’ve-got-to-get-this-game-in circumstances left Bryce Harper treating first base as a shower tile with soap suds all over it — will cost him an MVP award. Maybe he will only miss, as Dusty Baker suggested, a week to 10 days (though the smart guess is more). That would leave him with, say, 140 games played, and it would be hard to grow his homer and RBI totals to chase down, say, Paul Goldschmidt for the award. But who was thinking that Saturday night? This isn’t 2012, when the Nationals’ appearance atop the NL East was a novelty and Harper’s major league debut a revelation. This isn’t 2014, when Harper was about the only Nats hitter prepared for prime time in the playoffs, or even last year, when he was clearly playing through some sort of injury and put up numbers that didn’t befit his history or his ability. This is 2017, what might be Harper’s penultimate season in Washington. It is 2017, when the Nats — on those rare occasions when they’re fully formed — have the deepest and most dangerous team in their history. It is 2017, when every stumble over the first base bag legging out a hit or odd waggle of an arm after a te tthrowing ow g a p pitch tc is sg greeted eeted

My guess is that he has not yet recovered from that. Irritability, apathy and lack of motivation are classic hallmarks of depression, which can rob a new parent of the

To help you enjoy your remaining time on a beach, at the pool, or in a hammock, here are five short-story collections worth perusing for quick reads during summer’s (increasingly) waning days. MICHAEL DIRDA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Nearly Nero: The Adventures of Claudius Lyon, the Man Who Would Be Wolfe’

‘Bibliomysteries: Stories of Crime in the World of Books and Bookstores’

By Loren D. Estleman

The subtitle says it all — except to note that contributors to this hefty anthology include some of the most admired contemporary writers of mysteries and thrillers: Jeffery Deaver, Laura Lippman, Nelson DeMille, C.J. Box, Anne Perry. Two particular treats are William Link’s “Death Leaves a Bookmark” and John Connolly’s Edgar Awardwinning fantasy, “The Caxton Lending Library & Book Depository.” In the latter, the lonely Mr. Berger solves the mystery of why a woman dressed like Anna Karenina wants to throw herself under an express train.

For fans of Rex Stout’s fat, irascible and agoraphobic detective Nero Wolfe, these 11 mystery stories will be a special treat. Loren D. Estleman imagines a Nero Wolfe wannabe, who adopts the name Claudius Lyon (get it?), then hires a con artist named Arnie Woodbine to be his Archie Goodwin. Even more than Goodwin, Woodbine narrates with sassy, smartalecky wit: “The APA was an organization devoted to art patronage, specifically for poets who’d missed the memo that the road to starvation begins with the purchase of one’s first rhyming dictionary.”

Edited by Otto Penzler

‘Nightmares and Geezenstacks’ By Fredric Brown

Fredric Brown gained immortality with “Knock,” the most famous science fiction short-short of all time: “The last man on earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door.” This collection gathers 47 mini-fantasies almost as concise, most being only two or three pages long, nearly all of them ending with an O. Henry-like twist. They range from the shocking “Nightmare in White” to the naughtily Rabelaisian “Ring of Hans Carvel” to the biter-bit classic “Hobbyist” to a little series about “Great Lost Discoveries.” Brown’s bar tales are models of how to tell a story without using a word too many.

‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice: An Anthology of Magical Tales’ Edited by Jack Zipes

Long before Walt Disney and composer Paul Dukas, there were stories about magicians and their — usually — overreaching pupils. Distinguished fairytale scholar Jack Zipes opens this new anthology with “Why Magic Matters,” an 80-page essay that explores this subgenre’s “master-slave dialectic,” with particular attention to contemporary pop culture (e.g., Harry Potter). These thought-provoking narratives from around the world aren’t particularly well known, but they repeatedly address one crucial question: Should we obey or resist authority?

‘Continental Crimes’ Edited by Martin Edwards

What is more restful than a classic murder mystery, provided it emphasizes charm and wit, puzzle and surprise? How about one set in 1920s and 1930s Europe? For his latest anthology, Martin Edwards selects lesser-known stories by well-known grandmasters, including Arthur Conan Doyle (“The New Catacomb”) and Agatha Christie (“Have You Got Everything You Want?”). In G.K. Chesterton’s “The Secret Garden,” the great detective Valentin tries to find out why a corpse has had its head cut off. And in Stacy Aumonier’s “The Perfect Murder,” two brothers decide that their wealthy aunt has lived long enough.

PRINCE

Now we know what purple rain looks like

The Pantone Color Institute has developed an official shade of purple in honor of Prince. The institute collaborated with the late legend’s estate to release “Love Symbol #2,” named after the album emblem adopted as Prince’s stage name. “The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever,” said Troy Carter, adviser to Prince’s estate, in a statement. TELEVISION Netflix has lured Shonda Rhimes, the well-regarded creator of TV series “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” from ABC, announcing its scoop just days after ABC owner Disney laid out plans to pull programming from Netflix. The streaming giant said Shondaland productions will be moving to Netflix for a multi-year deal, the financial details of which weren’t disclosed. New projects from Rhimes and her producing partner, Betsy Beers, will be available on Netflix. Her existing shows, as well as in-the-works projects including the legal drama “For the People” and a “Grey’s” spinoff, will stay with ABC. This big move for Rhimes comes after Disney said it will pull Disney and Pixar content from Netflix for a new service aimed at kids, due in 2019. ABC shows won’t be included, but Disney has hinted that it could shift more content to this new model. Viewers have turned their attention to the web, where they can watch video on their own schedules — an option Netflix has taught viewers to love. Netflix is also not competing with just cable anymore. TV companies have launched or are planning to launch a slew of streaming services, and Amazon and Google’s YouTube have as well. Netflix, which just signed up David Letterman for a talk show and bought a comic book publisher, is continuing to invest in original programs to win those eyeballs. TALI ARBEL (AP)

TODAY: It seems as though the precipitation should be south of us, but it’s hard to say there’s no chance of rain. Even if it doesn’t rain, we are not that far removed, so cloudiness may be hard to totally kick out of here. Sunnier skies are likelier as you head farther north, with highs in the mid-80s.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Someone may question your qualifications. You can prove that you are the right person for the job. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Some may accuse you of living in a completely different world. By day’s end, however, you will have won broad support from others.
