A hospital in Cardiff, Wales, was discovered to be home to more than 100,000 bees when patients noticed honey dripping down the walls. Beekeepers found a large colony of bees in the roof above a ward. A beekeeper said the hive had gone unnoticed for possibly five years. It’s thought that warm summer weather melted the wax, releasing the honey. About 70,000 bees were removed via an opening in the roof. (AP)

The species, described for the first time in a study published in PeerJ, sat on the shelf for more than a half-century and caught Boersma’s eye because of its “beautiful, cute little skull.” While there are three or four species of river dolphin that exist today (one of them may have already gone extinct; scientists aren’t sure if any individuals remain), one stands apart from

“It would be interesting to know what whales started out in the Arctic.” ALEXANDRA BOERSMA, on the evolution of Arktocara yakataga, a 25 million-year-old species of river dolphin that was reportedly found in Alaska. The fossil was recently rediscovered among the archives of the Smithsonian.

the rest: The South Asian river dolphin Platanista is the last remaining member of a separate lineage from the rest of the crew. The other species are similar to one another, but more like an oceanic dolphin than like their fellow river-dweller Platanista. But as luck would have it, Arktocara yakataga appears to be a close relative of Platanista, a dolphin that swims on its side and uses echolocation to navigate murky rivers without the ability to see. Arktocara yakataga is the oldest member of the Platanistoidea family ever found — it lived right at the time when whales were breaking into the ancestral groups that would evolve into modern whales — which helps prove that Platanista represents the remains of an ancient lineage. The other intriguing thing about Arktocara yakataga is that it was reportedly found in Alaska, which would mean the dolphin lived in the ancient Arctic. “It was striking and really kind of bizarre that this huge group of marine dolphins that were up in the Arctic and all over the world has dwindled to this one species that’s stuck in freshwater systems in Asia,” Boersma said. DISCOVERIES It happens more often than you’d think: Research scientists go digging around the dusty collections of your local natural history museum and find species hitherto unknown. Whatever sits on display when you visit — ancient art, towering dinosaurs, slightly off-putting taxidermy — is just the tip of the iceberg. Countless specimens remain unseen — not just by museum patrons, but often by staff as well. “There’s all this stuff that no one has ever had time to go through,” said Alexandra Boersma, who studies fossil marine mammals at the Smithsonian. So to find new species, all you have to do is wander the museum’s dustiest corridors. Along with her lab’s principal investigator, Nicholas D. Pyenson, Boersma went hunting for projects. “Some of it has been sitting there for decades,” she said. “No one has gotten around to describing it.” On Tuesday, she and Pyenson introduced their latest find

Derailment probed in criminal inquiry

Metro police looking for possible wrongdoing in East Falls Church crash MARK MASKELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION Metro Transit Police and two former federal prosecutors are launching an investigation into whether criminal wrongdoing may have contributed to last month’s derailment of a Silver Line train, the agency said Thursday. General Manager Paul Wiedefeld announced that he has requested that the agency’s police department open a parallel investigation into the July 29 incident, in which a train derailed outside of East Falls Church station — a move that suggests officials are considering criminal charges against maintenance workers or inspectors who could have contributed to the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Transit Administration had already concluded that the derailment occurred because the infrastructure was so degraded at that juncture that the train’s wheels came off the tracks. They also said that Metro failed to adhere to a frequent, regular inspection schedule and that the training program for maintenance workers had proven inadequate. Wiedefeld’s statement Thursday suggested that the lapses may

negligence or intentional sabotage or otherwise. Metro General Counsel Patricia Y. Lee — a recent Wiedefeld hire who started on the job last month — has solicited help from former assistant U.S. attorneys Adam Hoffinger and Peter White to assist with the investigation. “The administrative review uncovered information that warrants further investigation by Metro Transit Police,” Wiedefeld said in a statement. “While Safety Department investigations determine cause and accountability, it is even more important to understand if other issues must be addressed with the way track inspections and maintenance have been conducted.” MARTINE POWERS AND

Throughout his presidential campaign, Republican nominee Donald Trump has had a prominently displayed “TRUMP” sign free-ofcharge on one of the nation’s most famous streets. That’s all changing this week. The “Coming 2016″ Trump sign that adorns the Trump International Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue NW is being removed this week as the project nears completion. The hotel, which is between the White House and the U.S. Capitol, is scheduled to open Sept. 12. The sign, while a typical construction sign, has been a point of contention in the heavily Democratic city as the hotel’s namesake has made a controversial and often divisive bid for president.

have been even more serious. “The public has a right to know that the tracks on which their trains run are being properly inspected,” Wiedefeld said. “The information uncovered to date raises potentially serious concerns, and we will take all actions necessary to get answers and hold people accountable.” According to Metro, Wiedefeld decided to request police involvement after investigators alerted him to information that had been gleaned from interviews with employees, inspection reports, video recordings, and rail defect tracking. Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly declined to offer further specifics on what kinds of malfeasance officials believe may have occurred — whether serious

‘Be as boring as possible’ Seeking to fix Metro, GM embraces role as ‘nuts-and-bolts guy’

billion operating budget for the fiscal year. Congress made it clear in a hearing on Metro’s safety woes this spring that the system won’t get another dime until he does. Metro is governed by an unwieldy board of directors with competing interests in the federal government, D.C., Maryland and Virginia, which contribute operating funds based on where riders live and how much they use it. Persuading federal, state and local governments to cede control to an entity as powerful as, say, New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority isn’t part of Wiedefeld’s portfolio — that job goes to board Chairman Jack Evans, who also serves as a D.C. Council member. Wiedefeld’s moves have been bold, if not glamorous: shutting

TRANSPORTATION Paul Wiedefeld stood on an overcrowded platform at Union Station, watching as trains came and went, too full to pick up more commuters. Metro was making him — the general manager of D.C.’s subway system — late for a meeting about customer service. Wiedefeld was just another rider that day, angered by Metro’s inability to perform basic functions. He was even more frustrated about the apparent apathy of subway workers and police officers who watched the situation unfold. When he finally reached Metro’s headquarters, he stormed into the meeting and demanded changes. “What concerned me was, it was business as usual — the whole response,” Wiedefeld said in an interview. “It was just being handled as a normal day. I let them know that was not acceptable.” Wiedefeld, 60, is determined to do what many observers say is impossible: improve safety and reliability while reversing a slide in ridership, all without the added funding advocates say Metro needs to survive. The nation’s second-largest transit network opened 40 years ago as a point of pride for Washington and its suburbs, but after decades of deferred maintenance, it has deteriorated into an example of failing infrastructure in America’s cities. Wiedefeld says he is confident he can fix things with his $1.8

down the entire subway system for daylong emergency inspections and repairs; a nine-month maintenance blitz that closes stations for weeks; firing operators who run red lights; and proposing a permanent end to late-night service on weekends. Unfortunately for the unassuming public servant, these decisions have raised his profile. Now he’s recognized constantly around the capital. “The goal here is to be as boring as possible,” he said. He wants to run Metro like a public works department, not a construction company. Previous bosses were mainly focused on expansion, rather than operations, maintenance or safety, Wiedefeld said. “He’s a real nuts-and-bolts guy,” Evans said. “We don’t need

a turnaround financial specialist as much as we need someone, first of all, to do what Paul’s doing: Oversee the reconstruction of the system.” Wiedefeld’s grasp of details was evident during a sweltering summer day’s tour on the Orange Line, where he interacted easily with workers replacing worn-out rail fasteners and rotting ties. The visit bolstered his argument that temporarily closing sections of track is essential: Otherwise, crews spend most of their time moving heavy equipment between midnight and 5 a.m., when trains aren’t running. One worker cleaned debris from a concrete trough by hand. “That’s what we want to see,” Wiedefeld said, pointing his flashlight over a grate. “The water’s flying down.” BEN NUCKOLS (AP)

TRANSPORTATION Arlington County is looking to partner with transportation providers such as Uber and Lyft to offer residents rides from more remote residential areas of the county where bus service to Metro stations is limited. The on-demand option would replace some fixed bus service in north Arlington. “What we would be supporting is picking up residents in their neighborhood and taking them to one or two designated stops, most likely a transit station,” said Marti Reinfeld, the county’s interim transit bureau chief. “The county will subsidize that at some level.” It could take a couple of years before such a program launches, but county transportation officials say they want to do so as soon as possible. Arlington joins a growing number of U.S. transit agencies that are exploring partnerships with the popular app-based companies to leverage their success and improve service to residents. Nationwide, some transit providers have began collaborating with Uber and Lyft in mutual marketing efforts. In some cases, deals involve discounts for transit users and the integration of the companies’ apps into the public transit agencies’ websites. Uber has partnerships in Atlanta and Dallas where it markets itself as a connection to transit stations. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY

For sale in Normandy: D-Day tanks

SYRIA Syrian opposition activists have released haunting footage showing a young boy rescued from a partially destroyed building in the aftermath of a devastating airstrike in Aleppo. The image of the stunned and weary boy, sitting in an orange chair inside an ambulance, covered in dust and with blood on his face, encapsulates the horrors inflicted on the war-ravaged city. Photos and video of the boy were widely shared on social media. “Watch this video from Aleppo tonight,” ABC correspondent Sophie McNeill tweeted. “And watch it again.” The London-based Telegraph said: “This picture of a wounded Syrian boy captures just a fragment of the horrors of Aleppo.” An hour after his rescue Wednesday, the building the boy was in completely collapsed. That kind of destruction is common after almost 5½ years of conflict, which has claimed at least 400,000 lives and displaced millions. Aleppo has long been a key battleground between the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and the rebels. The fighting has frustrated the United Nations’ efforts to

On Thursday, the world body’s special envoy to Syria cut short a meeting of the ad hoc committee — chaired by Russia and the U.S. — tasked with de-escalating the violence so that relief can reach beleaguered civilians. The U.N. envoy, Staffan de Mistura, said there was “no sense” in holding the meeting in light of the obstacles to delivering aid. The U.N. is hoping to secure a 48-hour pause in the fighting in Aleppo. Later Thursday, the Russian military said it would back the initiative on condition the aid convoys travel to both rebelcontrolled and government-held parts of the city. A doctor in Aleppo on Thursday identified the boy as 5-yearold Omran Daqneesh. The doctor confirmed the boy was brought

to the hospital known as “M10” on Wednesday night, following an airstrike on the rebel-held neighborhood of Qaterji, with head wounds but no brain injuries, and was later discharged. Rescue workers and journalists arrived at Qaterji shortly after the strike and began pulling victims from the rubble. “We were passing them from one balcony to the other,” said photojournalist Mahmoud Raslan, who took the memorable photo. He said he had passed along three lifeless bodies before someone handed him the wounded boy. Recently, the city has garnered international attention as the humanitarian crisis has worsened. The flow of water, which serves millions of residents, was cut off earlier this month.

In the market for a World War II tank? Now’s your chance to snag one — if you have a couple hundred thousand dollars to spare. The Normandy Tank Museum doesn’t get enough visitors, so it’s shutting down and auctioning off its entire collection, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. The sale will be held on Sept. 18 in Catz, near Normandy’s Utah beach, which was part of the allied invasion in June 1944. The museum opened in 2013 with the private collection of its co-founder, Patrick Nerrant, but it didn’t receive the expected traffic. Is this the future of climate change?

New Uber plan puts its drivers out of business

floods is not a new phenomenon,” said Alex de Sherbinin, a geographer at Columbia University’s Earth Institute. “However, the question is whether the frequency, spatial area, intensity and duration of such events is increasing under climate change.” Developing countries across the world face the biggest threat, because they can’t bounce back from disasters like the U.S. can. But around the world, climate relocations are underway. Fiji, for instance, has relocated its Vunidogolo village to higher ground. Yet the topic of how climate change can displace people tends to be more widely discussed outside of the U.S. than within it. “This is merely a foretaste of what will happen in the decades to come on a much more massive scale,” said Michael Gerrard, director at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University. Few places have undertaken serious planning, and ultimately, they are going to have to, he noted. CHRIS MOONEY

TECHNOLOGY Uber passengers in Pittsburgh will be able to summon rides in self-driving cars with the touch of a smartphone button in the next several weeks. The high-tech ride-hailing company said Thursday that an unspecified number of autonomous Ford Fusions with human backup drivers will pick up passengers just like normal Uber vehicles. Riders will be able to opt in if they want a self-driving car, and rides will be free to those willing to do it, spokesman Matt Kallman said. Uber, which has a self-driving research lab in Pittsburgh, has no immediate plans to deploy self-driving cars beyond the Pittsburgh experiment. But its CEO, Travis Kalanick, has said the ride-sharing company’s future — indeed, the future of all transportation — is driverless. “When there’s no other dude in the car, the cost of taking an Uber anywhere becomes cheaper than owning a vehicle. So the magic there is, you basically bring the cost below the cost of ownership for everybody, and then car ownership goes away,” Kalanick said at a 2014 tech conference. The announcement accelerates Uber’s quest to provide autonomous taxis to the public worldwide. Large tech and auto companies suggest they could start selling self-driving cars within three to five years. JUSTIN PRITCHARD

ENVIRONMENT In San Bernardino County, Calif., 82,000 people were ordered to leave their homes Wednesday as an explosive wildfire “hit with an intensity that we hadn’t seen before,” as one fire official said, and surged across 30,000 acres. The wildfire followed dramatic flooding in Louisiana that the Red Cross termed our “worst natural disaster” in this country since Hurricane Sandy. Thirteen have been killed and 40,000 homes damaged. The same week as the Louisiana and California disasters, the Alaskan village of Shishmaref voted to permanently relocate, as the barrier island on which it rests is threatened by rising seas. It all seems like more and more of a pattern — from 1,000year floods in South Carolina to 2015 floods in Texas that scientists later said had been enhanced by global warming. And it’s certainly not just the U.S.: In a dramatic wildfire evacuation, more than 80,000 people fled Fort McMurray, Canada, in April, terrorized by a wildfire that grew to more than 1 million acres. So is this what climate change looks like — more and more people displaced? “You’d find no scientist would disagree with the fact that a changing climate is and will continue to put people out of their homes,” said Greg Holland, a climate expert at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Holland said that the most obvious reason for this is rising seas swallowing coastal zones, as in the case of Shishmaref. As for weather extremes related to such factors as rain and heat, Holland continued, “the consensus documents are saying

Floods happen regularly, and fires can start from human carelessness or arson. While factors as heat, drought and earlier seasonal snowmelt surely exacerbate matters (for fires), it’s hard to

say they pulled the trigger. Still, in a year in which every single month so far has set a new global temperature record, experts seem more willing than ever to get past the “climate change didn’t cause this” qualifier and talk about the trends that we’re now seeing. When it comes to the Louisiana floods, climate researcher Kevin Trenberth of the NCAR said it was “pathetic” that reports he’d seen on the event weren’t mentioning climate change. “Displacement from fires and

The ugly Americans? OLYMPICS In the past two weeks, Brazilians feted the four American swimmers and their fellow Olympians with fireworks in the opening ceremony, cheered them in the pool and on the medal stand, and hosted them at a thumping dance party in a lakeside nightclub. After all this hospitality, it came as an extra betrayal to Brazilians that Ryan Lochte and his three U.S. teammates allegedly embellished their tale of armed robbery, casting Brazil as the villain in a story that embarrassed authorities and added to Rio de Janeiro’s reputation as a city awash in crime. As Brazilian police began to unravel the swimmers’ account Thursday — using surveillance footage to show it was a rowdy encounter at a gas station rather than a harrowing gun-to-thehead robbery — Brazilians expressed anger at the athletes’ behavior, as well as a sense of vindication. “I’m very aware of the chaos of the city, of the violence, of all the Brazilian problems,” film producer Tati Leite said. “Taking advantage of this to hide misbehavior, I felt offended.” Brazil is suffering from economic and political chaos, leading many critics to say the Olympics never should have been held in Rio. During these games, police have reported many incidents of armed robbery,

including against high-profile officials, athletes and coaches. The story told by Lochte seemed to be the most dramatic example. He said that a taxi that carried him and teammates Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen before dawn Saturday was pulled over by fake police officers who robbed them at gunpoint. But on Thursday, police said

Lochte’s story was a fabrication. Instead, police said, the swimmers got into an altercation at a gas station, damaging a restroom, and a security guard pointed a gun at them. If the police account is true, it would mean Lochte lied about portions of the incident, for reasons that are unclear. His attorney, Jeff Ostrow, did not immediately return a telephone message at his

Fort Lauderdale office Thursday. The day before, Ostrow said the incident happened “exactly the way Ryan described it” under oath to Brazilian police Sunday. Paulo Sotero, director of the Brazil Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, said the incident reinforced “negative stereotypes on both sides.” Where Brazilians saw Americans as arrogant, Americans viewed Brazil as a place of “absolute violence and lawlessness.” Amid relentless criticism of how Brazil has hosted the Olympics — from security problems to logistical mishaps — residents have grown tired of being disparaged and are lashing out at the swimmers, who have been interviewed by authorities and could face legal charges. “They are inventing everything,” taxi driver Luiz Eloi said. “Why are they lying?” Brian Winter, vice president for policy at Americas Society/ Council of the Americas, said this looks “like a classic case of foreigners who come into Latin America and believe the normal rules no longer apply — that you can go out and get into trouble and then do things like lie to the police without there being any consequences. “The notion foreigners can come in and disrespect their police just drives [Brazilians] crazy.” JOSHUA PARTLOW, DOM PHILLIPS AND DAVE SHEININ (THE WASHINGTON POST)

$400M to Iran was leverage in prisoner release NATIONAL SECURITY The Obama administration said Thursday that a $400 million cash payment to Iran seven months ago was contingent on the release of a group of American prisoners. It is the first time the U.S. has so clearly linked the two events, which critics have called a hostage-ransom arrangement. State Department spokesman John Kirby, above, repeated the administration’s line that the negotiations to return the Iranian money — from a militaryequipment deal with the U.S.backed shah in the 1970s — were conducted separately from the talks to free four U.S. citizens in Iran. But he said the U.S. withheld the delivery of the cash as leverage until Iran permitted the Americans to leave the country. “We had concerns that Iran may renege on the prisoner release,” Kirby said, citing delays and mutual mistrust. As a result, he explained, the U.S. “of course sought to retain maximum leverage until after the American citizens were released. That was our top priority.” Both events occurred Jan. 17, fueling suspicions from Republican lawmakers and accusations from GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump of a quid pro quo that undermined America’s longstanding opposition to ransom payments. Earlier this month, the administration flatly denied any connection between the payment and the prisoners. BRADLEY KLAPPER (AP)

Kerri Walsh Jennings has played volleyball for the U.S. on the beach and indoors over five Olympics.

With third-place finish, Walsh Jennings adds to brilliant Olympic career BEACH VOLLEYBALL Kerri Walsh Jennings raised both arms to the small section of the arena waving American flags. Covered in sand and smiling, she sprinted across the beach volleyball court, high-fived volunteers and smiled some more. She found her partner, April Ross, and gave her a teary-eyed hug. She spoke briefly with officials, and then she ducked through a doorway, maybe for the last time. Walsh Jennings would not allow herself to consider whether her stirring bronze medal victory over Brazilians Larissa and Talita late Wednesday night marked her final Olympic appearance. “I have no room in me to think

about tomorrow,” Walsh Jennings said. “I focus on the present because that’s where my joy is.” Walsh Jennings, 38, has three gold medals and three children. If Wednesday night’s match was her final act in the Olympics, she can be forever proud. She and Ross came back from one set down and a deficit in the second, setting aside their devastation from the semifinals, the first loss of Walsh Jennings’ Olympic career. If she does retire, Walsh Jennings will leave as nothing less than one of the greatest champions in American sports. She has played in five Olympics, including her appearance for the 2000 indoor team, where she earned a fourth-place finish to go with her collection of medals on the beach. She has won more professional titles than anyone.

“To not get up for a bronze would be dishonoring our country. It was a highlight of my career.” KERRI WALSH JENNINGS, the 38-year-old mother of three who captured her fourth Olympic medal

She and longtime partner Misty May-Treanor once won 112 consecutive matches. At Stanford, she made four all-American teams. Her Cardinal teams went 122-11, won four Pacific 10 titles, advanced to three final fours and claimed two national titles. She was five weeks pregnant when she won gold in London.

“It’s incredible,” said Don Shaw, her coach at Stanford. “And then consider the fact she’s done it with a bad shoulder her whole life.” Walsh Jennings’ chance at a fourth gold medal evaporated when Agatha and Barbara edged her and Ross a night before losing to Germany in the final. What could have possibly motivated Walsh Jennings the following night? It was a consolation match, a warm-up act in front of a hostile crowd. There was a game to win, and she has become synonymous with the sport. “When you talk about beach volleyball,” Talita said, “you talk about Kerri Walsh.” If it’s over, it would’ve been fitting for Walsh Jennings’ run to end with gold. But a Rio bronze honors her career just as well. ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Certainty pays for Clement U.S. hurdler wins gold in the 400-meter race with no doubts in mind

Maroulis claims first gold medal for U.S. women ALEXANDER HASSENSTEIN (GETTY IMAGES)

TRACK & FIELD Kerron Clement was so certain that in January he pushed aside his other track medals and cleared out an empty space in the trophy cabinet back in his Gainesville, Fla., townhouse. For a place-holder, he put pen to paper and wrote: Gold medal, 2016. Clement was so certain that when he was packing for Rio de Janeiro, he made certain his mother, Claudette, included the family’s American flag. He figured he’d need something to parade around the Olympic Stadium track after winning the men’s 400-meter hurdles race. Clement was so certain that even when a young runner from Kenya looked like he’d catch Clement and snatch away the gold late in Thursday’s race, the American didn’t worry a bit. “I knew I was going to get that gold medal and I was sticking to that plan,” Clement said. “Nothing and no one was going to stop me from achieving that.” Wielding a lethal combination of confidence and speed, Clement will leave Rio with something to fill the empty space in that cabinet back home. Just as he

planned, the 30-year-old hurdler won gold, posting a time of 47.73, just 0.05 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Boniface Mucheru Tumuti. With about 50 meters to go, Clement could feel his legs burning, and he could see Tumuti gaining ground. Clement thought he might have to dive across the finish line, he said, “but I dug down deeper.” “I was sprinting for my life,” he said. It was the race he’d been

imagining for years. Clement was born in Trinidad but his family moved to the U.S. when he was in high school. He starred at the University of Florida, won silver at the 2008 Olympics and claimed two world championships. But four years ago, Clement finished last in the London final. In his career he has dealt with a variety of injuries and surgeries, from groin to a hernia. Following the 2013 world championships, Clement realized he

WRESTLING Helen Maroulis had been thinking about facing Saori Yoshida for two years, and on Thursday in Rio, the 24-year-old alumnus of Magruder High in Rockville did the unthinkable, beating Yoshida 4-1 in the 53-kilogram division freestyle wrestling final while becoming the first American woman to win Olympic wrestling gold. Yoshida’s name has echoed across her sport. She comes from Tsu, Japan, where officials annually award to a promising young athlete a grand prize named for her. In the universe of women’s wrestling, where she had won three consecutive Olympic gold medals, the 33-year-old is called, simply, Yoshida. She is widely considered the greatest female wrestler of all time. The weight of Maroulis’ win Thursday made for an emotional medal ceremony. Both wrestlers wept on their respective podiums. Maroulis mouthed “The Star-Spangled Banner” with tears running down her face. Yoshida seemed inconsolable, heaving sobs as she mourned her 14-year streak of winning either a world or Olympic title. Maroulis entered the Rio Games as the reigning world champion and a first-time Olympian. In 2006, she became the first girl to place at the Maryland state wrestling championships, where she finished sixth in a field full of boys. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Maybe it’s unfair to ask this now, when preseason offenses are vanilla, but how has Cousins improved after starting a full season? What can he do better than last year? That’s what the Redskins want to know before committing to a long-term deal. The answer will come starting in September, not in August, but he hasn’t flashed much difference yet. He seems a little more at ease as the incumbent starter, but the Redskins so far are staying in his comfort zone with short, quick throws. Will he show something different when the situation demands it?

Matt Jones is penciled in as the starter, but Kelley’s name has come out of Gruden’s mouth far more often throughout the offseason. That’s a real tell that the rookie free agent not only has a chance to make the team, but could play a significant role. He ran for 40 yards and a touchdown on seven carries in Atlanta. Sure, it was against reserves, but Kelley looks good in practice and seems ahead of young teammates Keith Marshall and Mack Brown. Kelley was versatile at Tulane, where he filled in at fullback. At 228 pounds, he can run with power.

The slot specialist has a chance not only to remain the No. 3 receiver, but take the No. 1 job in 2017 if he posts another productive year. Rookie Josh Doctson is sidelined indefinitely with an Achilles tendon injury. In his preseason debut, Crowder can start showing if he is the man to replace Pierre Garcon or DeSean Jackson or both after they become free agents in the spring. Last season as a rookie, Crowder caught 59 passes. He’s already developed a connection with Cousins and has the breakaway speed to be a threat after the catch .

It has been a long journey for the 30-year-old swing tackle. He played only two NFL games — in 2012 with St. Louis — before joining Washington last season, when he started twice and played in 13 games. Now he’s a solid alternative to Trent Williams, who may not play for the second straight week because of a sore knee. Nsekhe is also a possible guard, although at 6-foot-8, 335 pounds, he might be a bit too big for the position. Nsekhe is improving in pass protection and already is a solid run blocker. If nothing else, he’s a valuable reserve.

Because Paul is playing fullback in addition to his regular role at tight end, the Redskins could conceivably keep four tight ends and no blocking backs. Among the tight ends, Jordan Reed is the leading receiver, Vernon Davis a solid veteran, Logan Paulsen an excellent blocker, and Paul does a little bit of everything. Cutting one of them seems nearly impossible, although Paulsen could be the odd man out. One topic to keep in mind Friday is whether Paul is versatile enough to get extra snaps.

A third preseason game against Buffalo will help sort that out, but for now, here are five players to keep an eye on.

Darren Sharper, who played defensive back in the NFL for 14 years, was sentenced Thursday to 18 years and four months in prison and fined $20,000 in a case in which he was accused of drugging and raping as many as 16 women in four states. U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo sentenced Sharper, 40, after he pleaded guilty in federal court in New Orleans to drugging three women so he could rape them. The six-time All-Pro has also pleaded guilty or no contest to similar charges in state courts in Louisiana, Arizona, California and Nevada. (AP)

FOCUS FEATURES

The impressive magic of “Kubo and the Two Strings” isn’t limited to Kubo’s sword.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

The cutting edge: Treat your eyes and ears to ‘Kubo’ With movies, it takes time for any technological advance to settle in, and it’s easy to be picky: The audio on “Steamboat Willie” crackles. Movies shot on digital lack the depth and contrast of film. 3-D films have dimmer colors. It takes time to make the future now. Now there’s “Kubo and the Two Strings.” “Kubo” would be an extraordinary film no matter where you saw it. Laika — the studio that

produced “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” — is firing on so many cylinders here that Pixar must be nervous. Laika’s dedication to stop-motion animation has always been admirable and the results beautiful; with “Kubo,” director Travis Knight has easily surpassed the studio’s previous efforts. It’s a spectacular film on every level, and it deserves to be seen at its best. That’s where the technology comes in. I was lucky enough to see “Kubo” in Dolby Cinema. This combines Dolby Vision, which gives better contrast, color and

clarity to the image, and Dolby Atmos, which uses speakers all over the place, including the seats, for an immersive sound experience. Dolby Cinema was launched in 2014, and “Kubo” is the first stop-motion animated film to be available in the format, which made a great film transcendent. The simplest example: Early in the movie I got irritated because a baby was crying in the theater somewhere behind and to the left of me. Except it turned out the baby was in the movie. The richness of the

‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ (PG, 101 min.) DIRECTOR: Travis Knight STARS: Charlize Theron, Art Parkinson, Matthew McConaughey IN A NUTSHELL: After his village is

attacked, Kubo must use his magical instrument to hunt down magical armor and fight the Moon King.

color means the frame conveys a three-dimensional depth, but you don’t have to wear the stupid glasses. The extraordinary visuals of “Kubo” will still wow you if you wait for Redbox, but they won’t make you gasp. The sound will be fine in any other theater, but it won’t envelop you and pull you into the world of the film. You can watch “Kubo” anywhere; to truly experience it, you need Dolby Cinema. (There is one exception — the sensory experience might be too much for kids younger than 7, but I wouldn’t recommend the film for anyone that age anyway.) I’ve seen other films in Dolby Cinema and I’ve never once insisted people pony up the (often substantial) extra cash for the premium experience. The visual and aural magic of “Kubo,” though, demands it, because there has never been a 2-D film that has created such a threedimensional world.

Say goodbye to ‘Schumer’ (for now)

Amy Schumer tweeted Thursday that she will not be working on her show “Inside Amy Schumer” for “the foreseeable future,” and will instead focus on writing and touring. While Comedy Central renewed the sketch show for a fifth season, Schumer says it will be at least a year before she returns. The news came soon after Kurt Metzger, a comedian and writer for the show, made controversial comments regarding rape. (EXPRESS)

Jared Leto joins 2017’s “Blade Runner” sequel

‘Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World’ Unrated, 98 min.

Werner Herzog’s documentary is a series of 10- to 15-minute ruminations on the internet, beginning at its beginning. Thoughtful, searching and wonderfully moving in its wistful final moments, “Behold” may not be Herzog’s most artistically ambitious film, but it’s an intriguing, even important one nonetheless. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV’ PG-13, 110 min.

Based on the wildly popular video game series, “Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV” is a computer-animated adventure set in a mythical realm whose very existence is threatened when invading hordes from a neighboring kingdom come seeking its magical crystal. Sean Bean, Lena Headey and Aaron Paul provide voices for the three heroes. (TWP)

Arthur Hiller, director of ‘Love Story,’ dies at 92

www.blackcatdc.com

Arthur Hiller, who received an Oscar nomination for directing the hugely popular romantic tragedy “Love Story” during a career that spanned dozens of popular movies and TV shows, died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 92. Although since dismissed by some as overly syrupy, “Love Story,” with Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal as star-crossed Ivy League lovers, was one of the most popular movies of 1970. (AP)

Solid visuals and a great chariot race can’t redeem the ill-advised remake FILM REVIEW It takes a fair amount of chutzpah, if not outright hubris, to remake a film that won 11 Academy Awards, including best picture, best director and best actor. But even if the makers of the new “Ben-Hur” were merely trying to match, and not improve upon, the 1959 sword-and-sandal epic, they have missed the mark. The new film follows the rough contours of the original plot, centering on the changing fortunes of Jerusalem nobleman Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston) and his adoptive Roman brother Messala (Toby Kebbell). After Judah takes the rap for an assassination attempt that someone else has made on the Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate (Pilou Asbaek), our hero is condemned to row in the belly of a Roman galley. Fast-forward five years,

‘Ben-Hur’ (PG-13, 125 min.) DIRECTOR: Timur Bekmambetov STARS: Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, Morgan Freeman, Rodrigo Santoro IN A NUTSHELL: In a remake of the 1959 classic, a man is falsely accused of an assassination attempt, condemned to slavery and forced to face his enemy in a chariot race.

and the embittered Judah has worked his way back home under the aegis of an African trader (Morgan Freeman in ridiculous-looking dreadlocks) who has taken note of Judah’s gifts as a horseman. This, of course, is the setup for a showdown between Judah and Messala, who, as Pilate’s right-hand man, was responsible for Judah’s banishment and his family’s imprisonment. Payback

will be sought in the form of a chariot race, a high-stakes form of competition in which the runners-up are routinely carted off the course on stretchers, or in pieces. The race itself is a sight to behold. Wild and hyperviolent, the sequence has the visceral impact of several gut punches. But it’s followed by a schmaltzy denouement that feels like it was lifted from the mawkish film-within-a-film in the Coen brothers’ snarky comedy “Hail, Caesar!” Director Timur Bekmambetov and Co. have created a redesigned product that is at once inferior to the original and a slavish imitation. This new “Ben-Hur” could just as easily have been called “Been There, Done That.” MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Adam West, Burt Ward head back to the batcave Adam West and Burt Ward are reprising their respective roles as Batman and Robin, but they won’t have to don tights this time around. The actors are voicing the characters in the animated film “Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders,” out this fall. The movie’s colorful style will recall the campy aesthetic of the 1960s live-action “Batman” TV series starring West and Ward. Julie Newmar will also return as Catwoman. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is scheduled to release the film digitally Oct. 11 and on Blu-ray on Nov. 1. (AP) TELEVISION

The Tonyand Emmy-winning comedian will join a lineup that also includes Harvey Fierstein, Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson, Derek Hough, Martin Short, Sean Hayes and Rosie O’Donnell. Martin, the “SCTV” veteran who recently won a Tony Award in the Broadway revival of “Pippin,” will play the overprotective mother of Penny Pingleton (Grande). Film review For a movie about the reallife gray-market arms dealers Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz and their gonzo, giddy world of gunrunning, “War Dogs” has a weird lack of energy and bite. Co-writer and director Todd Phillips — best known for the “Hangover” comedies — doesn’t seem sure if he’s celebrating Diveroli and Packouz’s dubious occupation or scolding it. “War Dogs” admittedly contains more than a few infectiously funny moments — usually courtesy of Jonah Hillas Diveroli — but for every hit there are many misses. Nominally the story of how Packouz reunited with his best friend from junior high to make millions in gaming the contracting system during the BushCheney years, “War Dogs” often feels like little more than a couple of guys bro’ing down in exotic locales, repeating the common trope of real-life conflicts serving as backdrops for American derring-do and, finally,

warner bros.

Miles Teller, left, and Jonah Hill play gunrunners in “War Dogs.”

‘War Dogs’ (R, 114 min.) Director: Todd Phillips Stars: Jonah Hill, Miles Teller In a Nutshell: In this film based on a true story, two arms dealers make millions by gaming the U.S. military contracting system during the early years of the war in Afghanistan.

self-realization. The reckoning, when it comes, leaves the audience feeling deflated and depressed, and far more cynical than when they walked in. That’s not necessarily inappropriate, but the pessimism feels unearned in a film that never firmly decides where its sympathies lie. Ann Hornaday (The Washington Post)

‘When the Bough Breaks’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Jan. 13

EXPECTED RELEASE: Sept. 9

SUMMARY: Taraji P. Henson, left, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae star in this telling of the little-known but true story of three black women who worked at NASA in the early days of the space race. While we’ve certainly come a long way since the 1960s, much of the trailer’s talk about race and gender feels uncomfortably relatable today. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Regina Hall and Morris Chestnut, left, are a successful couple who use a surrogate (Jaz Sinclair) to conceive a child. She moves in, and then pregnancy hormones really kick in as she starts wearing Hall’s clothes, makes a play for Chestnut and insists on eating nothing but Jif peanut butter spread on Claussen pickles. And ONLY Jif and ONLY Claussen. K.P.K.

@STEVERUSHIN joins other social media users in ribbing U.S. swimming star Ryan Lochte after he returned to the U.S. from Rio, leaving behind three teammates — Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Jimmy Feigen — to explain to Brazilian authorities what happened last weekend. The athletes originally said they had been robbed, but their story has since fallen apart. Social media users responded with memes making fun of Lochte, such as a movie poster for “Pinocchio” with an image of the swimmer’s head photoshopped onto it.

MADELEINE DAVIES, at jezebel .com, on the women’s satire site, which dedicated its entire landing page to humor articles about rape in response to a sexual assault controversy in New York’s comedy scene. Headlines include “ ‘Most Women Lie About Rape,’ Says Man Lying About Rape” and “I Anonymously Reported My Rape for the Anonymous Attention.” The Upright Citizens Brigade comedy network recently banned a comedian after multiple women accused him of sexual assault.

“I want someone to look at me the way Bolt and De Grasse look at each other.” @SNFAIZALKHAMISA expresses envy over the bromance between Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and Canadian sprinter Andre de Grasse. The two exchanged smiles as they neared the finish line in the men’s 200-meter semifinal Wednesday, with Bolt finishing first and de Grasse second. Photos of the two high-fiving and hugging Sunday during the men’s 100-meter semifinals and finals also highlighted the friendship between the two.

“Does ‘Mr. Brexit’ mean that people will Google him the day after and realize how big of a mistake it was? #Brexit #Trump” @LAURABEDROSSIAN on confusion over Donald Trump’s labeling of himself as “Mr. Brexit” Thursday on Twitter. The Republican presidential nominee appeared to be implying that he would win the U.S. election despite unfavorable poll numbers, the way the “leave” campaign won in the U.K.’s Brexit referendum despite predictions that it would lose.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re likely to see many things from more than one angle. This gives you an advantage when “experts” begin sharing their opinions. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’re less willing than most to share what is going on inside, but you may find that doing so will help you deal with a hidden struggle. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’re eager to make things right between yourself and someone you wronged some time ago. He or she is also ready to heal any wounds. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Take care that you don’t mistake instruction for criticism. What someone offers can be put to good use if your attitude is positive.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’re approaching a crossroads of sorts, but you may not be ready to make the decision that will likely be required.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) The difference between fact and truth will be very clear to you before the day is out. Keep exploring anything that fires you up. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may be set ablaze by someone whose approach is very much like yours. Use this new energy to make a plan you can maintain. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Comics POOCH CAFE | PAUL GILLIGAN

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may find a certain endeavor rather pointless, no matter how much it may have been recommended to you. Avoid any outright conflicts.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll

feel someone’s influence, even though he or she is nowhere in sight. You must soon figure out what is happening. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You can use the time available to do certain things that you would otherwise have to leave for another day. Get ahead.

Today in History 14 A.D.: Caesar Augustus, Rome’s first emperor, dies at age 76 after a reign lasting four decades; he is succeeded by his stepson Tiberius.

Inspiration comes from all sources; all you have to do is make yourself available. A friend notices something odd about you.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’re waiting patiently for someone to reach out to you, but why not reach out yourself and see if you can speed things up a bit?

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

NFL quarterback makes pretty, pretty good joke New York Jets fan Larry David visited the team’s training camp on Wednesday and chatted with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. David, who has said he thinks he could be an NFL offensive coordinator, asked Fitzpatrick if he thought acting was hard. “Yeah,” he said. “It’s a lot like a normal person thinking they could … be an offensive coordinator.” (AP)

“I think one month it got to like $13,000.”

After a concert in Berlin on Tuesday, Rihanna toured the city, stopping to take an Instagram photo in front of Juan Sebastian Pelaez’s giant photo cutout of her, People reports. The work of art, titled “Ewaipanoma (Rihanna),” sits in front the Berlin Biennale Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art. Over a story high, it portrays a headless, bikini-clad Rihanna as she’s removing her sunglasses. A tattoo-like image of her face is printed across her chest. “Went to visit my boobs the biggest they’ll ever be,” Rihanna captioned her Instagram post. “Too wild.” (EXPRESS)
