A Sturbridge, Mass., man learned the hard way that fireworks aren’t the best way to deal with a hornets’ nest. A New York couple’s Florida vacation home has been taken over by dozens of black vultures that are vomiting and defecating everywhere. The Palm Beach Post reports the Casimano family can’t even visit their $702,000 home at Ibis Golf and Country Club. Siobhan Casimano described the smell as “like a thousand rotting corpses.” The vultures, lured by a neighbor who fed them, have destroyed screen enclosures and overtaken the pool. (AP)
An airport security worker has been fired for handing a passenger a note that said, “You ugly!!!” The June incident came to light last week after Neal Strassner obtained security video through a public records request and posted it online. The video from the Rochester, N.Y., airport shows the worker handing Strassner the note after he goes through a metal detector. Strassner says when he opened the note, the woman burst out laughing. Monument is ready for action NATIONAL MALL Eight years after it was rattled by an earthquake and three years after it was closed for elevator and other repairs, the beleaguered Washington Monument will reopen Sept. 19, the National Park Service announced Friday. Since the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake, the national landmark has been closed on and off for more than five years. As time passed, the Park Service wrestled with problems, and an estimated 2.5 million people missed the chance to enter the monument, which honors George Washington. “We are thrilled beyond words to be in the home stretch and now actually have an identified date when we’ll be able to start welcoming people back to the monument,” said Mike Litterst, a Park Service spokesman. Starting on opening day, sameday tickets for tours will be available on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 8:30 a.m. at the lodge near the base of the monument. And starting Oct. 10, tickets also can be ordered at

The monument will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The reopening comes after the 2011 earthquake caused damage to the interior and exterior of the 555-foot marble and granite structure that forced its closure for 2½ years as it underwent repairs that cost about $15 million. The work was funded by the government and a $7.5 million donation from local businessman and philanthropist David Rubenstein.

Then, between 2014, when it reopened after the earthquake, and 2016, the monument’s elevator broke down 24 times, often stranding visitors who rode it to the top. The monument was closed again in 2016. With a further $3 million donation from Rubenstein, the Park Service began fixing the elevator and with government funds, began work on a new security screening facility. The Park Service, in its statement about the reopening, called it “another example of how the Trump Administration is enhancing visitors’ experiences at national parks and public lands.” In July, The Washington Post reported that the Park Service was diverting almost $2.5 million in entrance and recreation fees to help pay for Trump’s Independence Day extravaganza, when the agency had almost $12 billion in deferred maintenance. On Friday, Emily Douce, the National Parks Conservation Association’s director of operations and park funding, said that while it is “great” the monument is reopening, “It’s really Rubenstein [who] should take the glory for this.” MICHAEL E. VIRGINIA Virginia’s Crime Commission will devote two days this week to mass shootings and other gun violence, issues vexing a state where 32 died in a university massacre a dozen years ago, another 12 were cut down at a municipal complex in May, and an average of three more were lost to shootings every day in between. Over daylong hearings today and Tuesday, the commission will hear from law enforcement officials, academics and activists. State delegates and senators will also attend, presenting about 60 bills proposed for a special legislative session on guns that GOP leaders ended after 90 minutes in July without taking up any bills. Leaders promised to reconvene Nov. 18, after state elections for all 140 legislative seats. GOP leaders said the bipartisan crime commission under Republican control would use the time in between to study the legislation and make recommendations to the General Assembly. Gov. The number of passengers who traveled via Dulles International Airport in 2018, according to airport officials. Evans threatened firings over probe Former Metro chair pressured officials to keep findings private POLITICS Former Metro board chairman Jack Evans threatened the jobs of the agency’s top lawyer and board secretary in an effort to keep secret that the panel’s ethics committee had found he committed a violation, according to confidential agency documents. Evans repeatedly berated Metro General Counsel Patricia Lee and board corporate secretary Jennifer Green Ellison in the spring for their work on the inquiry, to the point that Metro officials were concerned the two might sue the agency for wrongful termination or creating a hostile work environment, the documents and interviews show. Ellison told then-ethics committee Chairman Clarence Crawford in May that Evans told her, “Be careful, you could be next� to be fired after Lee, according to handwritten notes taken by Crawford. According to notes, Ellison said the threat could make the “hair on back of your neck stand up.� The secrecy effort ultimately failed when Crawford revealed June 17 that the committee found Evans had violated the board’s

Jack was very upset that that came out.� Evans remains under investigation by federal authorities and a law firm hired by the D.C. Council for using his position to help clients. NAACP sues to get schools renamed Confederate figure ties in Hanover County face constitutional challenge VIRGINIA A Virginia chapter of the NAACP has filed a federal lawsuit against Hanover County and its school board over two schools that commemorate Confederate leaders, making a novel legal argument that the names should be changed on constitutional grounds. The suit argues that LeeDavis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School violate the rights of African American students by forcing them “to champion a legacy of segregation and oppression in order to participate in school activities.” That violates the First Amendment’s guarantee of being free from “compelled speech” and the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection under the law, the suit alleges. “We believe it’s one of the first times that these well-established legal principles have been used to challenge the issue of Confederate and segregation legacy names in schools,” said Kaitlin Banner, deputy legal director for the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, which filed the suit
on behalf of Hanover County’s NAACP branch. The NAACP is asking the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia to order the schools to be renamed. Tom Harris, a spokesman for Hanover County government, declined to comment on the case. As of 2018, 31 Virginia schools were named for Confederates; according to the lawsuit, 18 had been removed by the end of last year. Hanover school board members voted 5 to 2 last year to keep the Confederate school names after some residents had petitioned for change. Earlier this year, the county board of supervisors declined to reappoint one of the two school board members who voted to change the names. Hanover is a predominantly white, largely rural county north of Richmond where the Sons of Confederate Veterans are active. Lee-Davis High School opened in 1959. Stonewall Jackson, then a junior high school, was named for the Confederate general in 1968. More than 2,500 students attend the two schools; fewer than 10% are African American. City officials were mostly relieved that a downtown gathering Saturday of more than 1,000 farright protesters and anti-fascist counter-demonstrators wasn’t as violent as feared. “We were preparing for and planning for a worst-case scenario,” Portland Mayor Ted
Wheeler said. There were 13 arrests, and police seized bear spray, shields, poles and other weapons. But by using barriers and bridge closures — and allowing a large contingent of right-wingers to leave when they asked to — authorities were able to mostly keep the two sides apart. Amvrosios, 81, has served in the diocese of Kalavryta, in southern Greece, since 1978. A blog post he wrote about gays in 2015 — calling them “the scum of society” and urging people to spit on them — led to his being convicted by a local court of hate speech in January 2019. Former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, who became the state’s first female elected governor only to see her political career derailed by Hurricane Katrina, has died. After struggling for years with cancer, Blanco died Sunday in hospice care in Lafayette. She was 76. Blanco held Louisiana’s top elected job from 2004 to 2008. She was criticized as unprepared, overwhelmed and indecisive after Katrina, the devastating hurricane of August 2005 that killed more than 1,400 people in Louisiana, displaced hundreds of thousands and inundated 80% of New Orleans. Economic pillar wavers U.S. consumers — who are shouldering the global economy — show signs of anxiety Leaked memo: ‘No-deal’ Brexit will bring chaos
The U.S. stock market has proved highly volatile as President Trump’s trade war with China has escalated.

ECONOMY American consumers are increasingly propping up the global economy, an enduring source of strength that is helping keep the United States out of recession and drawing a sharp contrast with the rest of the world. But as a number of signs point to a possible downturn in the U.S., economists are growing more skeptical that consumers will continue to open up their wallets as freely. A failure to do so could hasten the arrival of the first U.S. recession in a decade. Low unemployment, rising wages and easy credit have given consumers the confidence and ability to spend in recent months. That has proved crucial as spending by U.S. businesses has declined, U.S. manufacturing has fallen into a funk, and the economies of many other large countries, including Germany, have begun to shrink. The strength of the consumer has convinced many business leaders that the U.S. economy won’t go into recession anytime soon, and it is the basis for optimism at the White House that it will remain strong into the 2020 election. Yet a number of developments could shift this view. The U.S. stock market, which saw its largest one-day decline of the year Wednesday, has proved highly volatile as President Trump’s trade war with China has escalated. Bond markets, which have a strong track record of predicting recessions, are flashing warning signs. And the trade war itself, which for the most part hasn’t hit consumers directly, will begin to do so more forcefully in the fall as tariffs rise on consumer staples, including some food and clothing products. “The consumer is playing Atlas, shouldering the economy,”
UNITED KINGDOM Secret British government documents have warned of serious disruptions across the country in the event that the U.K. leaves the European Union without a trade deal on Oct. 31, according to a report. The Sunday Times newspaper published what it said was what the British government expects in the case of a sudden, “no-deal” Brexit. Among the most serious: “significant” disruptions to the supply of drugs and medicine, a decrease in the availability of fresh food and even potential fresh water shortages due to possible interruptions of imported water treatment chemicals. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he is ready to leave the EU regardless of whether he is able to renegotiate the Brexit deal struck by his predecessor, Theresa May. His own officials, however, have warned that with a no-deal Brexit, the sharing of law enforcement data and the health of Britain’s crucial financial services industry could be in jeopardy after Oct. 31. The documents also quote officials as warning that up to 85% of all trucks wouldn’t be ready for French customs at the critical English Channel crossing that day, causing lines that could stretch out for days. RELIGION The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has issued a warning to members that coffee is prohibited no matter how fancy the name, that vaping is banned and that marijuana is outlawed unless prescribed by “competent” doctors. The new guidance in the August issue of a church youth magazine does not include fundamental changes to the religion’s strict health code, but the clarifications are significant and seem to reflect growing concern about young Latter-day Saints’ adherence to the rules. The article says it aims to clear up issues that could be confusing for young people within the religion’s “Word of Wisdom,” a set of rules about what foods and drinks are good for members and what substances they should avoid. The rules prohibit alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and coffee and tea. They are based on what church members believe was a revelation from God to founder Joseph Smith in 1833. The new instructions about coffee make clear that there’s no gray area allowing coffeeinfused drinks, and allude to the wide variety that could tempt members of the faith. The passage about marijuana seems to underscore the faith’s desire to carve out a space to allow some members to use medical marijuana, while reiterating that recreational use is prohibited. HBO’s slapdash sermon ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ delivers a hit-or-miss caricature of megachurch culture
TV REVIEW When it comes to his HBO comedies, creator and actor Danny McBride always aims for the fish in a barrel, having previously portrayed such easy targets as a washed-up pro baseball player (“Eastbound & Down”) and a criminally opportunistic school administrator (“Vice Principals”). McBride likes characters who mask their insecurities with a vain hypermasculinity. It only figures that he would eventually get around to playing an evangelical pastor. Although “The Righteous Gemstones” does indeed partake in some rather low-hanging fruit as it mocks the megachurch milieu, it occasionally hints at
some stronger potential. But the show mostly comes off as an unfinished gumbo of broad stereotypes, violent occurrences and snaky retributions among a family whose holiest instincts were long ago subsumed by their contempt for one another. Sunday’s premiere briefly sketched the extent of the Gemstone family’s empire — an eponymous megachurch headed by Eli (John Goodman), who has global ambitions for expanding his flock. McBride plays Eli’s eldest child, Jesse, a hypocritical show-minister who preaches glitter and glory on Sunday mornings and then sins the rest of his waking hours. Jesse’s sister, Judy (Edi
Keeping the faith Although “The Righteous Gemstones” gets off to a rough start, better episodes eventually follow. One flashes back 30 years and introduces viewers to Eli Gemstone’s late wife, Aimee-Leigh (Jennifer Nettles), who found childhood success as half of a gospel-singing duo with her fame-hungry brother, Baby Billy (Walton Goggins). Patterson) is a brat who feels she’s entitled to a larger role in church leadership. Younger brother Kelvin (Adam Devine) also contradicts Christian values, but he seems to be the Gemstone with the firmest faith in the message.
The show reminds one of how “Vice Principals” became a much more promising show whenever it stopped long enough to take a satirical bite out of the absurdities in public education. “Gemstones” has a similar shrewd eye for the rapacious religiosity of the evangelical realm: a satellite church in the old Sears space in a comatose shopping mall; the family’s faux-classy display of mansions and cars; the charitable impulses that are really just a means to convert the Third World. Yet, one might hope for “The Righteous Gemstones” to land a cleaner punch. Nobody comes to church hoping to hear a wishywashy sermon. HANK STUEVER

Breaking the mold: Netflix crafts a hit with ‘Blown Away’ glassblowing.” That’s not just empty hype. TV’s reality competitions have featured potentially great British bakers, would-be fashion designers … but not a single contestant who breathes into a blowpipe to inflate molten glass into a bubbly blob for shaping and sculpting. And it turns out that the glassblowers on “Blown Away,” which released its 10 episodes last month on Netflix, are perhaps the most impressive reality show contestants in the history of reality shows. First off, the 10 contestants face tremendous hardships as they vie for the horriblesounding title of “Best in Blow” and a prize package valued at a mildly impressive $60,000. They drip sweat as they toil in “North America’s biggest hot shop” — and hot it is! The furnaces that turn sand, limestone and soda ash into liquid glass can hit 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. One contestant actually cuts off the bottom half of his
pants to cool off. Glass being glass, they have to be prepared for disasters. “Anything can go wrong at any time,” one contestant notes. The end result could be a beautiful, ephemeral creation — like the elegant, Venetianstyle taco holders made by nononsense glassblower Deborah. Or the contestant might be left with a pile of broken glass. In the first challenge, 23-yearold Kevin’s spear cracks. “The piece is worthless,” he says, impulsively knocking it on the ground, where it shatters. He’s the first to be sent home, but is not bitter: “What I’m going to take from this competition is the humbleness that comes with glass.” That kind of philosophical self-reflection is as much a part of the show as is the pain and joy of creating glasswork. And all this tension and emotion comes in tightly edited half-hour episodes. There’s no bloat, no padding. “Grey’s Anatomy” star Camilla Luddington married “13 Reasons Why” actor Matthew Alan on Saturday in a ceremony on the California coastline, according to People. “The thing that I always said to Matt is that I just wanted to see the ocean,” Luddington said. “That was my one thing.” The venue was the couple’s second choice after Luddington told Entertainment Tonight in March that they lost their original location to last year’s California wildfires.
