An Oregon family’s golden retriever was honored by a sheriff for digging up $85,000 worth of drugs in a family’s yard. Kenyon’s owners thought he had found a time capsule, so they decided to film themselves opening it recently. As they did, they realized Kenyon had discovered drugs. The Yamhill County sheriff identified the substance as 15 ounces of black tar heroin — and named Kenyon an honorary narcotics dog. (AP)

A driver was forced to gun his engine and jump a New Jersey drawbridge that began rising as he crossed it with his family recently. As Terence Naphys drove onto the Middle Thorofare Bridge, a vessel tried to cross below. Police said the bridge operator mistakenly raised the span a few feet. Naphys sped up and landed with a bang on the other side. No one was injured, but Naphys said he’ll never cross the bridge again. (AP)

From stinky plants to a pregnant panda, it’s a big week in the District

Activist again lights up front of Trump hotel THE WASHINGTON POST

THE DISTRICT Washington may never be more closely concerned with the sights, sounds and yes, smells of the natural world than today. Multitudes will probably stare at the sky as the moon eclipses 81 percent of the sun. At the U.S. Botanic Garden at the foot of Capitol Hill, three socalled corpse flowers are about to bloom, officials said. For this plant, each bloom is an event. As much as 10 years may pass between them. Garden officials said this appears to be the first time in North America for an institution to have three blooming simultaneously. In this case, the blooms were expected sometime from Sunday to Wednesday, making today an obvious possibility. In bloom, the plants demonstrate great size, with one now more than 8 feet tall. They are also celebrated for a putrid smell.

THE DISTRICT

Three corpse flowers could bloom soon, and Mei Xiang may be pregnant.

Meanwhile, at the National Zoo, officials have closed part of the giant panda habitat to provide quiet for Mei Xiang, who may be pregnant, the zoo said. Mei Xiang, who is 18 years old, was artificially inseminated twice on May 25. Since then she has been monitored closely for clues to her condition. Officials said she is building a nest, sleeps more and reacts to loud noises. Her appetite has declined. Along with a secondary hormone rise, these

are all indications of a possible pregnancy. But none of this is definitive. Pandas, the zoo pointed out, can, like other species, experience false pregnancies. A panda that is undergoing a pseudopregnancy does everything pregnant pandas do. But, when one of the false pregnancies concludes, the zoo said, increased hormone levels revert to normal. Energy levels also revert, as does behavior. MARTIN WEIL(THE WASHINGTON POST)

Opioid crisis hits D.C. hard Community leaders say city isn’t doing enough to fight drug epidemic THE DISTRICT James Washington has used naloxone to reverse six overdoses in the past six months. Six times, he has watched the drug stop addicts from dying in parts of D.C. hit hardest by the city’s growing opioid epidemic. “It’s a dream, a best-kept secret,” Washington said of naloxone. He works at Family and Medical Counseling Services in Southeast Washington. “And we don’t have enough.” Opioid overdose-related deaths in the District have nearly tripled in two years — from 83 in 2014

to 231 in 2016. But advocates say city officials are not providing community health partners enough naloxone to stem the growing epidemic and have not written regulations to make naloxone available in pharmacies without a prescription. “The city’s actions are not meeting the need, and people are dying,” said Kaitlyn Boecker, policy coordinator at the Drug Policy Alliance. D.C. began providing naloxone kits in October to two community health groups, Family and Medical Counseling Services and HIPS, formerly known as Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive. But leaders at the organizations said the initial supply didn’t come close to meeting demand.

For five or six consecutive months, there wasn’t enough naloxone available at Family and Medical Counseling Services, said Diane Jones, director of special programs and field education. “We ran out about the second or third week of every month,” Jones said. “The people coming to us knew they were going to overdose or their using partner was going to overdose. But we couldn’t do anything — it was horrible.” HIPS saw similar shortages, and only since July — when the D.C. Health Department announced it would increase its supply of naloxone — has the group been able to meet demand for the naloxone kits, said Cyndee Clay, executive director of HIPS. Clay thinks the city should be

doing even more. “We’re not extending into new communities because we’re worried about meeting the current need,” she said. “We know how to fix this. I can’t understand why there is this holdup.” A bill to make naloxone available in D.C. pharmacies was unanimously passed by the D.C. Council and signed into law in February, but the Health Department hasn’t rolled out regulations that would allow pharmacies to begin selling the drug without a prescription. “We have not seen any sort of urgency from the Department of Health,” Boecker said. “No one is sure where they are in this process.” RACHEL CHASON

Arrest made in girls’ killings Man fatally stabbed his 6-year-old sister and two cousins, police say CLINTON, MD. Antonio Williams was supposed to be caring for his 6-year-old sister and two young cousins as his mother worked an overnight shift as a nurse. Instead he methodically killed each girl as they lay in a single bed in a Maryland home, Prince George’s County police said. The mother, Andrena Kelley, returned to the Clinton

residence early Friday morning to find the gruesome scene, the bodies of her daughter, Nadi ra Ja nae’ Williams Withers, 6; and visiting cousins, Ariana Elizabeth DeCree, 9; and Ajayah Royale DeCree, 6, brutally stabbed in a basement bedroom. Williams, 25, made no attempt to flee, later confessing what he had done, police said at a Saturday news conference offering details about the crime. Investigators said they’re still

probing what prompted Williams, who marked his birthday Saturday, to carry out the slayings. Williams spared the life of his 2-year-old sister, who was found unharmed in the home, police said. “All three girls were found lying in a single bed suffering from puncture wounds and lacerations,” said Prince George’s County Police Capt. Anthony Schartner at the news conference. He added later: “Mr. Williams was the only adult at the time in the home.” LYNH BUI AND JUSTIN JOUVENAL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Departure of Bannon unlikely to curb turmoil

But he added that he does not expect “sweetness” anytime soon. “No administration in history has been so divided among itself about the direction about where it should go,” Bannon said. Some Trump allies argued that Bannon’s removal was necessary to bring a more regimented system to the White House. “You don’t have such an unorthodox staffer breathing down people’s necks and creating tension every day,” said a GOP strategist. “What it does not do

is remove the person who’s creating the most drama in the White House, and that’s Donald Trump.” The coming weeks should bring no shortage of drama, from working on raising the debt ceiling to resurrecting health care legislation and taking up tax reform. On most of these issues, there is no evident strategy among Republicans on either side of Pennsylvania Avenue for bridging divisions and bringing together Trump and congressional Republicans. “The reality of it is that even if there were no issues inside the White House, you still have an underlying divide in the Republican Party about how we’ll approach some of these issues,” said ex-Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele. “To me, that’s the most disheartening part of this.” ROBERT COSTA AND

Trump and leaders of the GOP remain divided on key issues ANALYSIS President Trump’s most unconventional senior adviser, Stephen Bannon, has left the White House, but the political turbulence that has characterized the first seven months of Trump’s presidency doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. The tenure and departure of Bannon, the president’s chief strategist and champion of his nationalist impulses, exposed deep fissures in the Trump-era Republican Party, within the White House and beyond. Those differences are still harming Trump’s effectiveness as he tries to kick-start a legislative agenda at a time when relationships with Republican leaders are frayed — largely because of the president’s behavior, including his response to the recent violence in Charlottesville, Va. While Bannon’s ouster was the latest move by new Chief of Staff John Kelly to bring a greater sense of normalcy to the White House, some question how likely that is to take hold. Bannon made clear since he left Friday that he is going to use Breitbart News, the pugilistic conservative website, to try to advance his agenda from outside the White House. Manhunt continues for driver BARCELONA, SPAIN Spanish authorities on Sunday continued their hunt for a 22-yearold suspect and two others in the brutal vehicle attacks in Barcelona and a nearby coastal city late last week. A police official said the terrorist cell had planned a “much more serious attack” that was probably thwarted by an accidental explosion Wednesday. Authorities were looking for a fugitive they suspect might be Younes Abauyaaqoub, who may have been the driver of the van that plowed through crowds Thursday on Barcelona’s scenic Las Ramblas boulevard. a motorcycle to the main fugitive in the attacks. The Barcelona thoroughfare was packed with pedestrians, and 13 were killed. One person was killed in a second vehicle attack hours later in the seaside resort of Cambrils. Police reiterated Sunday that

the cell of 12 suspected terrorists has been dismantled. The cell was made up of Moroccans, all younger than 35, from or around a small town near the French border. On Sunday afternoon, authorities said they had identified three more of the victims in the Barcelona attack, including Julian Cadman, a 7-year-old boy with dual British and Australian citizenship who had been missing since Thursday. A spokesperson for Catalonia’s emergency services division declined to name the two other victims but said one was Belgian and one Italian. Dick Gregory, comedian and activist, dies 1932-2017 Dick Gregory, the comedian and activist who broke racial barriers in the 1960s and used his humor to spread messages of social justice and the importance of nutrition, died Saturday in Washington. He was 84. He had been hospitalized for about a week because of a bacterial infection, his son Christian Gregory said. Gregory was one of the first black stand-up comedians to find success with white audiences. He rose from an impoverished childhood in St. Louis to win a college track scholarship and become a satirist who deftly commented on race at the dawn of the civil rights movement. “Where else in the world but America,” he joked, “could I have lived in the worst neighborhoods, attended the worst schools, rode in the back of the bus, and get paid $5,000 a week just for talking about it?” His sharp commentary soon led him into civil rights activism, where his ability to woo audiences through humor helped bring attention to fledgling efforts at integration and social equality for blacks. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Chicago in 1966 and for U.S. president in 1968. He also preached about the powers of prayer and good health. Once an overweight smoker and drinker, he became a trim, energetic proponent of liquid meals and raw food diets. DAISY NGUYEN (AP)

Eclipse viewer’s guide The best ways to witness a cosmic spectacle that’s rarely this observable in the U.S. There’s a total solar eclipse roughly every 18 months somewhere on Earth, but the United States shares today’s spectacle with no other country. The first total solar eclipse to sweep coastto-coast across the U.S. in 99 years is being branded the Great American Eclipse of 2017. The path of totality — a 70-mile-wide strip from Oregon to South Carolina in which the moon will, for a couple of minutes, completely block the sun — crosses the homes of an estimated 12 million people. It’s expected to be the most observed, most studied and most photographed eclipse ever. Here are a few things to know heading into today’s big event. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP/EXPRESS) Why should I care? Astronomers consider a full solar eclipse the grandest of cosmic spectacles. The Earth, moon and sun line up perfectly every one to three years, but these sights normally are in no man’s land, like the vast Pacific or the poles. The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. will be in 2024. The next coast-to-coast one will not be until 2045. Will D.C.’s weather forecast affect seeing the eclipse? Locally, a light shadow of the moon will start to cover the sun just after 1:17 p.m. and will peak just after 2:42 p.m. at 81 percent coverage. Then, the amount of sun covered will start to diminish and, just after 4:01 p.m., it will be over. Clear eclipse viewing is far from guaranteed, though, as higher humidity combined with a quick-moving disturbance means

at least partly cloudy skies. Hopefully, any thicker clouds hold off until the late afternoon. Are solar glasses needed to view the eclipse? Yes! And parents beware: Eye doctors urge strict adult supervision for eclipse watchers under 16 years old. There should be absolutely no peeking without eclipse glasses or other certified filters except on the path of totality — which D.C. is not on — during the two minutes or so when the moon completely blots out the sun. Looking directly at the sun essentially cooks your retina. Seconds are enough for retinal sunburn. And unlike with the skin, you can’t feel it. The damage can be temporary or permanent. Are there other options if you don’t have solar glasses? Solar glasses will be tough to find

Eclipse pinhole projector For a safe way to view the solar eclipse without glasses, follow these steps.

3 The farther away you hold your pinhole, the bigger the projected image will be.

1 With your back facing the sun, raise a paper plate with a small hole punched in it. 2 Aim the beam from the hole onto another flat surface.

SCIENCE Millions of people have converged on a narrow corridor to watch today’s total eclipse cast a shadow that will race through 14 states, entering near Lincoln City, Ore., at 1:16 p.m. EDT, moving diagonally across the U.S. and then exiting near Charleston, S.C., at 2:47 p.m. EDT. The path will cut 2,600 miles across the land and will be 60 to 70 miles wide. Here are some numbers about today’s spectacle. (TWP/AP/EXPRESS)

if you don’t already have them, but there are some creative ways to still see the eclipse without them. You can look indirectly with a pinhole projector that you can make yourself out of a paper plate (see graphic, above). Or grab a kitchen colander or cheese grater to project the sun onto a flat surface at least 3 feet away. Or just use your hands. Look away from the sun and crosshatch your fingers to make little holes so you can project the sun’s rays onto the side of a building or sidewalk. But do not look directly at the sun through your kitchen gadget or fingers!

Today’s event will be costly for U.S. employers

AP

Is there a way to watch it on TV? If you can’t witness the total solar eclipse in person, you can still see it online or on TV. NASA will offer hours of coverage online and on NASA Television with images from satellites, research aircraft, high-altitude balloons and specially modified telescopes. CNN, ABC, NBC, Fox News and the Science Channel will have live coverage this afternoon, and The Weather Channel will kick off its coverage from seven locations at 6 a.m. The PBS science series NOVA is planning a quick turnaround with an hour-long eclipse documentary at 9 p.m.

Assad rejects security cooperation with the West

U.S.-backed Iraqi forces on Sunday launched a multipronged assault to retake the town of Tal Afar, west of Mosul. Tal Afar and the surrounding area is one of the last pockets of ISIS-held territory in Iraq after victory was declared in July in Mosul. The town, about 93 miles east of the Syrian border, sits along a major road that was once a key ISIS supply route. By early afternoon, Lt. Gen. Abdul-Amir Rasheed Yar Allah, who commands the operation, said the forces had recaptured a series of villages east, southwest and northwest of the town. The U.S.-led coalition is providing air and other support to the troops. (AP)

Churches across Sierra Leone held special services Sunday in memory of those killed in mudslides and flooding last week, as hospital officials announced the toll had risen to nearly 500 bodies collected. More than 600 people remain missing and rescue officials have warned that the chances of finding survivors are decreasing each day. The death toll previously stood at 450. Large-scale-burials have taken place all this week amid rainy weather that threatened further mudslides. Officials said water sources have been contaminated and aid groups are providing clean water. (AP)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday refused any security cooperation with Western nations or the reopening of their embassies, until they cut ties with opposition and insurgent groups. Assad’s defiant comments come at a time when his troops and pro-Iranian militiamen are gaining ground across the country under the cover of Russian airstrikes. Many countries have ceased calling for him to step down. Assad praised Russia, Iran, China and Lebanon’s Hezbollah for supporting his government during the conflict and said that Syria will look east when it comes to political, economic and cultural relations. Positive takeaways

THREE POINTERS

Methods of protest The offensive line protected Kirk Cousins but still struggled to run block.

After another slow offensive start, Redskins players admitted frustration, but not concern. Coach Jay Gruden wanted his starters to play until they manufactured a positive drive. The starters also had no intention of leaving the game without a touchdown. At one point, tackle Trent Williams refused to be subbed out. “I wasn’t going to leave on that note,” he said. Cousins hit Jamison Crowder for a 4-yard TD pass in the second quarter. They’ll need to stay focused on improving, because right now the line isn’t moving as one unit in the run, and Cousins isn’t in midseason form.

Preston Smith’s debut With injuries slowing him down and Junior Galette and Ryan Anderson looking strong at his position, outside linebacker Preston Smith needed to have a good night. Smith played only 18 snaps,

but he recorded a sack, a hit on the quarterback and another hurry during his limited action. He looked more decisive coming off the ball than he has in practices, and he did a good job of not losing sight of the quarterback while rushing. He still needs to work on bringing that effort consistently.

Bright spot for backs The ground game sputtered, but Washington’s running backs found ways to contribute. Chris Thompson had five catches for 52 yards, a team-high. Rob Kelley made a nice grab and would’ve likely had another had Cousins not underthrown him. Samaje Perine made a good adjustment on a wheel route from Colt McCoy that he turned into a 29-yard gain. Thompson has proven his versatility, but Perine — who rushed for 45 yards on eight carries — and Kelley are still working to improve as receivers.

JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The Redskins stumbled out of the gate in their second preseason game, but they eventually showed some signs of life in a 21-17 loss to the Packers. There’s plenty of work left to do, particularly on offense, but the team is starting to take shape. Here are five observations from Saturday’s game. Proper mindset

While Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned, multiple NFL players continued to protest during the second week of the preseason. Here’s a look at the different ways they attracted attention. (EXPRESS)

Rob Kelley and the running back group caught the ball well Saturday.

3 Sitting Seattle’s Michael Bennett, who said he was protesting racial injustice, and Oakland’s Marshawn Lynch sat during the national anthem for the second week in a row.

Standing

After missing offseason workouts and the first two weeks of the preseason while rehabbing a surgically repaired shoulder, fourth-round pick Montae Nicholson made three tackles in his debut. He looked comfortable on the field, did a good job of trusting his eyes and adjusted well to developing plays. Meanwhile, Deshazor Everett had a solid game while starting in place of Su’a Cravens. When Kendall Fuller and Quinton Dunbar both got juked by receiver Geronimo Allison in the red zone, Everett darted over and made a touchdown-saving tackle at the 7-yard line.

The starting defensive line remains undetermined, but position coach Jim Tomsula keeps preaching the importance of players embracing whatever role they’re given. Second-year pro Anthony Lanier is doing just that. He mostly sees the field in nickel packages, and twice his work occupying blockers led to sacks of Brett Hundley — one that Joey Mbu and Chris Carter combined on and another Carter grabbed alone. Give Phil Taylor another good grade. After starting the last game at nose tackle, he came off the bench Saturday and posted a sack on a rush up the middle.

Malcolm Jenkins held a fist in the air during the anthem, and Eagles teammate Chris Long put a hand on Jenkins’ shoulder. Long , who is white, said he supports equality.

1 Political cartooning Before catching a TD pass at the Redskins, Martellus Bennett shared a cartoon he drew on Instagram. It depicted his brother Michael being told to “stick to sports.”

Malaysia apologizes for upside-down flag

Malaysia has apologized to Indonesia for an “unintentional” error in printing the Indonesian flag upside down in a souvenir guidebook for the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Gut punch to boxing purists Mayweather-McGregor draws harsh criticism from sport’s big names

Raisman: USAG should do more to help victims

Floyd Mayweather, left, faces Conor McGregor in a fight rival promoters describe as a farce.

will be on Mayweather and McGregor in Las Vegas, the biggest matchup of the year is less than a month away: Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin. De La Hoya, whose company promotes Alvarez, said he wouldn’t be complaining if Mayweather’s comeback included a formidable boxer, and Arum said it would be better if McGregor had beaten another contender first. De La Hoya feels the fight won’t help boxing’s popularity. “It’s a

lose-lose for us,” he said. “We’ll be $100 lighter and we will have squandered another opportunity to bring boxing back to its rightful place as the sport of kings.” Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, seems to think comparing MayweatherMcGregor to any other boxing matchup is a mistake. The interest and demand are unlike anything Mayweather has seen before, he said, including the Pacquiao showdown in May 2015.

The fact that two fighters from different disciplines are even entering the ring speaks to the fascination the public has with celebrity and popular culture. “It’s called entertainment. ... We’re in a society now where that’s what people want to see,” Ellerbe said. “You can sit there and say whatever you want to. But people are intrigued by the Kardashians. That’s the way it is. How can you be mad at anybody for that?” RICK MAESE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Umpires end protests over ‘abusive player behavior’

Muguruza claims first title in U.S. by denying Halep

verbatim

After Commissioner Rob Manfred offered to meet with the union, the World Umpires Association said Sunday on Twitter that MLB umps will stop wearing white wristbands in protest of what they called “abusive player behavior.” Most umpires wore the wristbands Saturday after Detroit’s Ian Kinsler was fined but not suspended for calling Angel Hernandez a bad umpire and saying he “just needs to go away.” (AP)

Garbine Muguruza added another trophy in her breakthrough summer, following up her victory at Wimbledon by beating Simona Halep 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday in Mason, Ohio, for her first Western & Southern Open title. The Spaniard needed just 56 minutes to deny Halep a chance to move to No. 1 in the next WTA rankings. It was also Muguruza’s first title in the U.S. and her second of the year. (AP)

“I don’t really see it being that tough. It’s all about being able to communicate.” PATRICK EWING, telling The Washington Post about learning how to recruit in his new role as coach of Georgetown. The longtime NBA assistant has no previous experience selling a pitch to teenage prospects.

140-pound champ Terence Crawford expects to move up to 147, face winner of Pacquiao-Horn rematch

MATTHEW LEWIS (GETTY IMAGES)

BOXING Mike Tyson has said that Conor McGregor is “going to get killed boxing.” Promoter Lou DiBella likened it to a novelty act — “like when Evel Knievel tried to jump the Snake River Canyon.” Oscar De La Hoya, the former boxing champion turned fight promoter, ominously warned, “Our sport might not ever recover.” The boxing world hasn’t shown much enthusiasm for Saturday’s fight between the UFC superstar and Floyd Mayweather, the undefeated boxer who came out of retirement for a final megapayday. To them, the pay-per-view showdown only detracts from the sport and steals the spotlight from more deserving fighters. “[It’s] a spectacle. I don’t consider it part of boxing,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said. Fight fans are constantly checking the pulse of their sport, and have recently felt optimistic. There have been intriguing fights on ESPN (Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn) and big bouts between talented fighters (Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia). And while the focus this week

GYMNASTICS Six-time Olympic medal-winner Aly Raisman, above, is calling for sweeping change to USA Gymnastics in the wake of dozens of allegations of sexual abuse by former national team doctor Larry Nassar. He spent nearly 30 years with USA Gymnastics and is now in prison after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography. He is awaiting trial on separate criminal sexual conduct charges, in addition to being sued by more than 125 women who claim he sexually assaulted them. “I feel like there’s a lot of articles about it, but nobody has said, ‘This is horrible, this is what we’re doing to change,’ ” Raisman said Saturday, when members of the “Final Five” that won team gold at the 2016 Olympics were inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in Anaheim, Calif. Several alleged victims have come forward, including bronze medalist Jamie Dantzscher, but Raisman is the highest-profile athlete to publicly reprimand the organization. USAG is working to assure a safer environment, but Raisman feels it could do more. She cited as proof a reported $1 million severance package for former president Steve Penny. “I thought, ‘Wow, why couldn’t they create a program?’” Raisman said. “A million dollars is a lot of money. … They could even contact all the families that have come forward and say. ‘Can we help your kid with therapy?’” (AP)

Simone Biles is training but isn’t certain she’ll return to gymnastics

Hacking is bigger than movie leaks CYBERATTACKS Between bootleg DVDs and videos uploaded to file-sharing sites, piracy is a long-running issue for Hollywood. But now cybercriminals are making scandalous chatter and other company secrets just as vulnerable as media. The reputational risk from leaked emails is more difficult to calculate than any financial risk from piracy. “In some ways, that risk can be higher because you have no way of knowing what’s in those emails,” says Erik Rasmussen of Kroll Cyber Security. The cataclysmal event that comes to mind is the Sony hack in 2014. While movies were leaked, what’s remembered is the chaos unleashed amid a network shutdown and the disclosure of derisive comments about well-known actors such as as Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio and

racially insensitive remarks about then-President Barack Obama. The recent leaks at HBO, so far, have fallen well short of the damage inflicted on Sony. But there were concerns that hackers were setting the stage for a similar event. HBO’s hackers demanded a multimillion-dollar ransom payment. The leak of several scattered TV episodes might not have been enough to force such a payment, says Alex Heid of the risk management firm SecurityScorecard. “Pirated content ends up on Pirate Bay within 24 hours of airing,” Heid says. But hackers released an email in which HBO expressed willingness to pay $250,000 as part of a negotiation over data swiped from HBO’s servers. Whether or not the company ever intended to follow through with the offer, the email raised questions among security professionals about the importance of the data. Besides upcoming episodes from shows including “Game of T h rones ,” “ C u rb You r

Clockwise from top left: “Game of Thrones,” “Insecure,” “Ballers” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” were among the shows leaked in the HBO hack.

Enthusiasm,” “Insecure” and “Ballers,” the HBO data dumps included what appeared to be contact information of actors, a month’s worth of emails of one employee, sensitive internal documents like offer letters and episode scripts. In comparison to the Sony case, hackers crippled Sony’s network, wiped the company’s data and dumped thousands of internal emails and documents, including sensitive information such as employees’ salaries and Social Security numbers. The movie studio said in April 2015 that “investigation and remediation expenses” related to the hack cost it $41 million, or

about 8 percent of the film and TV division’s profit that fiscal year. Michael Lynton, who left as Sony Pictures’ head in January, said that press coverage of the emails hurt the studio’s standing in Hollywood and that the public airing of employees’ private information “took a long time to deal with,” Variety reported. So studios are learning to be cautious. Lynton told Recode in 2016 that instead of email, his “fax machine is in great use at this point.” Rasmussen adds that companies are sharing information with law enforcement in an effort to protect the industry — and stave off another sequel. Trumps to skip the Kennedy Center Honors

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump will not attend the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 3 “to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction,” the White House said Saturday. This news comes amid the continuing fallout over Trump’s stance on last week’s white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville, Va. The Kennedy Center said it is “grateful” the spotlight would remain on the honorees. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

Jerry Lewis, a king of comedy, dies at 91 The master of slapstick wrote and directed films in which he also starred

He also brought an antic joy to his fans as a slapstick performer, setting a standard for later generations of comics, including Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler. Few comedians have been so beloved and so derided as Lewis, who amassed devoted fans and stunningly hostile reviews from critics. Few have been so accomplished as humanitarians — his annual muscular dystrophy telethons had raised almost $1.5 billion by the late 2000s — or so polarizing as personalities. Lewis could be tireless, demanding and insecure — in his own words “a neurotic, temperamental imbecile.” He debuted as a director, writer and actor in “The Bellboy” (1960). The film was a smash and brought Lewis the cachet to control his next few projects, including “The Ladies

Man” (1961), “The Errand Boy” (1961) and “The Nutty Professor” (1963). He gained the grudging respect of some reviewers in 1983 when Martin Scorsese hired him for a dramatic part in “The King of Comedy” as a talk-show host kidnapped by a fan (played by Robert De Niro). In “Funny Bones” (1995), he again won over critics in an unlikable role, playing a comedian who overshadows his son’s comic ambitions. In 1995, Lewis had an acclaimed stage role as the Devil in the musical “Damn Yankees!” At $40,000 a week, he reportedly became the highest-paid performer on Broadway at the time. The New York Times, whose reviewers never much cared for his films, declared, “Jerry Lewis is legitimate at last.” ADAM BERNSTEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

1926-2017 Jerry Lewis, the comic actor whose rubber-limbed pratfalls and pipsqueak buffoonery made him one of the most uncontainable screen clowns of all time, died Sunday of natural causes at his home in Las Vegas. He was 91. Lewis was, for better or worse, one of the most unforgettable entertainers of his generation. His partnership with the suave and assured crooner Dean Martin made them a sensation, easily the most popular comedy team of the mid-20th century. Lewis, who surged to stardom at age 20 after partnering with Martin in 1946 at an Atlantic City nightclub, made 16 films with Martin, including “Jumping Jacks” and “Artists and Models.” They were major TV stars before breaking up in 1956 at their peak as a duo. After their bitter split, Lewis embarked on a solo career of dizzying summits and desperate lows, including an addiction to painkillers as years of physical comedy took their toll. Fascinated by the technical side of film, he became one of the first sound-era comedians to write, direct and star in his own movies. He was credited with laying the groundwork for later writer-director-actors such as Mel Brooks and Woody Allen.
