A whopper of a fishing story now has to carry an asterisk
A man in Guangzhou, China, awoke with pain in one ear last week and went to a hospital. Luckily, he needed only minor surgery: Doctors removed a gecko that had crawled into his ear canal while he slept, UPI reported. The lizard, still alive in the man’s ear, was calmed with an anesthetic and removed with a pair of forceps in a five-minute procedure that a doctor explained — while trying to stifle a laugh — in a brief video. Police in Conway, Ark., suspect that some construction workers were doing a bit of illicit moonlighting. The police shared securitycamera footage of a thief deftly using a forklift to steal an entire ATM from the drive-thru lanes at the First Service Bank, UPI reported Monday. The forklift was used to uproot the ATM from its foundation and lift it into the air before loading it on a truck and hauling it away. (EXPRESS)
Sidney Cellan caught a record-setting trout in Utah in June but has been told it no longer qualifies for the mark because his fishing license had expired. Cellan caught the 57-pound, 48-inch lake trout at the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Wildlife officials told him it was the largest catch-and-release trout in state history. But now they say they erred because of the invalid license. Cellan released the fish, so another angler can try for it. (AP)

It’s back to school in D.C. THE DISTRICT D.C. Schools Chancellor Antwan Wilson woke up a little earlier than usual Monday to brace himself for his first opening day of school in D.C. That meant getting up at 2 a.m. instead of 3 a.m. and squeezing in nearly two hours at the gym, some meditation and a little reading before he headed off for a busy day at work. By 9 a.m. Wilson was at Marie Reed Elementary School in Adams Morgan. “Students, are you ready for school?” he asked a group assembled behind him. “Yes,” they replied meekly. So began the 2017-18 year for D.C. Public Schools. On Monday, most of the city’s public schoolchildren went back to class as 102 of 115 DCPS schools opened. Two alternative high schools in DCPS and 11 that have extendedyear schedules opened earlier in August. Many of the city’s 120 charter schools, which are publicly funded but independently operated, began classes as well. D C P S h as about 4 8 ,0 0 0

students and the charter sector about 41,000. Wilson’s day began at Bruce Monroe Elementary in Park View, where he greeted students, and continued at Marie Reed, where he appeared with Mayor Muriel Bowser to announce the opening of the refurbished campus. The chancellor, who took the reins of the school system in February, faces a school year in which he hopes to formulate new strategies to tackle problems that have dogged DCPS for years,
“We can’t wait for you to continue to learn so you can continue to make progress, build upon the great progress that you had last year.” D.C. SCHOOLS CHANCELLOR ANTWAN WILSON, greeting students Monday on the first day of classes
including student absenteeism and vast achievement gaps that separate students in the wealthiest and poorest parts of the city. On Monday, DCPS opened four schools that had been overhauled under the school modernization program: Garrison, Watkins and Marie Reed elementary schools and Duke Ellington School of the Arts. At Marie Reed, Wilson and Bowser got a tour of renovations from Principal Katie Lungren. “It used to be really dark,” Lungren said, marveling at the light-filled corridors, decorated with bright accent tiles. The renovation has transformed what was once a noisy, out-of-date building into a sleek, modern one. The DCPS opening day was the first in a wave of school reopenings in the Washington region. Maryland schools will open after Labor Day this year, a shift in the calendar ordered by Gov. Larry Hogan. In Northern Virginia, start dates are staggered. Loudoun County schools will open Thursday; Fairfax County and Prince William County schools will open Aug. 28; and Arlington and Alexandria schools will open Sept. 5. The city recommends Jones Point Park, Fords Landing City Park or Point Lumley Park as places to watch the arrival. Free tours will be conducted Sept. 4 and Sept. 6. (AP)

Ex-aide sentenced in child porn case PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY A former elementary school volunteer in Prince George’s County who admitted to recording videos of children performing sexual acts with him and on each other was sentenced to 75 years in prison on Monday. Deonte Carraway, 23, told the court he is “not the monster” that people are portraying him to be. Authorities say he abused or recorded children performing sexual acts at Judge Sylvania W. Woods Elementary School or at the Glenarden Community Center, where he directed a youth
choir. According to indictments, Carraway also recorded children performing sexual acts inside Carraway their homes. Carraway pleaded guilty in January to 15 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor to produce child pornography. Federal prosecutors said their case involved 12 victims, ranging from ages 9 to 13. Carraway also faces 270 state charges after he was indicted by a Prince George’s County grand jury. Police learned of the abuse after an uncle checking a student’s cellphone discovered inappropriate photos and contacted authorities. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

Antonio Williams, 25, is accused of killing his sister and two cousins PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY The accused killer of three young girls muttered incoherently as sheriff’s deputies pulled him to the defendant’s table in a hearing that ended in a near melee among victims’ families in a Prince George’s County courtroom. Antonio Williams, 25, continued with loud outbursts for the few minutes he sat in his initial court appearance Monday on murder charges in the fatal stabbings of his sister and two cousins, all under the age of 10. As the judge abruptly ended the proceedings and ordered Williams to undergo a mental health evaluation, a woman triggered chaos as she exclaimed “Mommy loves you” to Williams. In an instant, other family members of the girls found dead Friday rose to their feet and hurled curses and threats across an aisle, as a half-dozen officers and court staff members moved in to prevent a fracas. Williams is charged with killing the girls as they lay in the same bed in a downstairs bedroom of the Clinton, Md., home where they had been left in his care, police have said.

The USS John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker in Asian waters Monday, leaving 10 U.S. sailors missing.
Navy chief orders probe of Pacific fleet’s fitness After a second collision in 2 months, official calls for pause in operations MILITARY The U.S. Navy ordered a broad investigation Monday into the performance and readiness of the Pacific-based 7th Fleet after an early morning collision between the USS John S. McCain and an oil tanker in Southeast Asian waters left 10 U.S. sailors missing and others injured. It was the second major collision in the last two months involving the Navy’s 7th Fleet. Seven sailors died in June when the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship collided in waters off Japan. Navy Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, will
call for a pause in operations and seek a deeper look at how the Navy trains and certifies forces operating around Japan, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said. “He has put together a broader inquiry to look into these incidents,” Mattis said, referring to the two recent collisions and other accidents at sea. Mattis spoke to reporters in Amman, Jordan, where he is traveling. Vessels and aircraft from the U.S., Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia were searching for the missing sailors. Four other sailors were evacuated by a Singaporean navy helicopter to a hospital in the city-state for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, the Navy said. A fifth was taken to the hospital by ambulance after the destroyer
arrived in Singapore under its own power, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said. There was no immediate explanation for the collision. The McCain had been heading to Singapore on a routine port visit after conducting a sensitive freedom-of-navigation operation last week by sailing near one of China’s man-made islands in the South China Sea. The collision between the 505-foot guided missile destroyer and the 600-foot Alnic MC ripped a gaping hole in the destroyer’s hull. The Navy’s 7th Fleet said “significant damage” to the McCain’s hull resulted in the flooding of adjacent compartments, but a damage control response prevented it from being worse. LOLITA C. BALDOR,

The deed to Rigby’s grave is up for auction next month, along with a small bible with “Eleanor Rigby” written inside and the original handwritten score for the song, which alone is expected to go for about $25,000. Protecting the Trumps puts overtime budget near breaking point POLITICS The Secret Service said Monday that it has enough money to cover the cost of protecting President Trump and his family through the end of September, but after that the agency will hit a federally mandated cap on salaries and overtime unless Congress intervenes. If lawmakers don’t lift the cap, about a third of the agency’s agents would be working overtime without being paid, agency officials said. “The Secret Service estimates that roughly 1,100 employees will work overtime hours in excess of statutory pay caps during calendar year 2017,” Director Randolph “Tex” Alles said. The spending limits are supposed to last through December, but the cost of protecting the president and members of the extended first family, who have traveled extensively for business and vacations, has strained the Secret Service. Trump and the first lady frequently fly to their oceanfront Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla., and to their golf club in Bedminster, N.J., on many weekends, and Trump’s four adult children have also traveled internationally.

Secret Service hits crisis on payroll
The Secret Service will need Congress to intervene if it is to pay overtime after September.
Alles cited overall increases to his agency’s staff levels, which grew by 800 this year, as a factor driving the extra costs. He called the agency’s current predicament, first reported by USA Today, “an ongoing issue for nearly a decade due to an overall increase in operational tempo.” Without question, however, the agency’s workload has grown under Trump. The Secret Service now protects 42 people around the clock, 11 more than it did under Obama. The Trump protection number includes 18 members of the president’s family. Tesla’s Musk calls for a ban on killer robots Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has said that artificial intelligence is more of a risk to the world than is North Korea, offering humanity a stark warning about the perilous rise of autonomous machines. The tech billionaire has joined more than 100 robotics and artificial intelligence experts calling on the United Nations to ban one of the deadliest forms of such machines: autonomous weapons. “Lethal autonomous weapons threaten to become the third revolution in warfare,” Musk and 115 other experts, such as Alphabet’s artificial intelligence expert Mustafa Suleyman, warned in an open letter released to the public Monday. “Once developed, they will permit armed conflict to be fought at a scale greater than ever, and at time scales faster than humans can comprehend.” The letter — which included signatories from dozens of organizations in nearly 30 countries, including China, Israel, Russia, Britain, South Korea and France — was released at an AI conference in Melbourne ahead of formal U.N. discussions on autonomous weapons. Last month, Musk told a group of governors that they need to start regulating artificial intelligence, which he called a “fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization.” PETER HOLLEY

Police confirmed that officers shot and killed Younes Abouyaaquob, 22, in the small town of Subirats, about an hour’s drive west of Barcelona. Abouyaaquob has been the subject of a massive manhunt since he escaped Thursday after the van attack. Police said Abouyaaquob was wearing what appeared to be a
suicide bomb vest when he was confronted by officers. Bomb squad officers deployed a robot to get near the prone body, only then learning that the suicide vest was a fake, they said. Spanish news reporters on the scene said police appeared to be searching the area for other suspects. Police helicopters circled overhead. Spanish authorities said Monday the death toll from last week’s attack rose to 15. Catalan Justice Minister Carles Mundo identified the latest victim as a man, Pau Perez, who

Carousel in the outfield
Injuries have forced the Nationals to use 13 players at one of their deepest positions MLB Because of the recent heavy turnover among Nationals outfielders, Alejandro De Aza hit leadoff and played right field Sunday in Washington’s 4-1 win at San Diego, his second start since joining the club Wednesday. Twenty-five miles south, across the U.S.-Mexican border, the Tijuana Toros hosted the Aguascalientes Rieleros. De Aza could just as easily have been preparing for that game. In June, he had a deal in place to play for the Toros. But the Nationals called his agent with a minor league contract offer, and De Aza reported to Class AAA Syracuse to play every day. Two months later, the 33-yearold, who spent spring training
with the Athletics and hit .205 with the Mets last year, suited up for his seventh MLB team, one that never envisioned needing him. The Nationals pride themselves on their outfield depth, which stretches from top prospects Juan Soto and Victor Robles to MVP candidate Bryce Harper and clubhouse leader Jayson Werth. But that strength has eroded, producing a dizzying carousel of stand-ins. De Aza, who was summoned to replace the injured Brian Goodwin, became the Nationals’ 13th player to log an inning in the outfield this season. Only the Giants have used more (17). Of Washington’s 13, eight have spent time on a disabled list, and five of the 11 Nationals currently
Soon to be restocked The Nationals expect every outfielder except for Adam Eaton (torn ACL) to be back by the end of the regular season. Brian Goodwin (groin) was jogging last week, Bryce Harper (bone bruise) joined the club on its West Coast trip, and Jayson Werth (foot) was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Syracuse on Monday. J.C.
on the DL are outfielders — Goodwin (groin), Harper (knee), Werth (foot), Adam Eaton (knee) and Ryan Raburn (trapezius). That doesn’t include Rafael Bautista, who just came off the DL for Syracuse, or Chris Heisey, who was hurt when he was let go in July.
The only players who have appeared in the Nationals’ outfield this season and have not landed on the disabled list are Adam Lind, Andrew Stevenson, Wilmer Difo, Howie Kendrick and De Aza. “I thought they were maybe going to call me back,” joked manager Dusty Baker, a former outfielder. Today in Houston the group includes De Aza along with a first baseman who has been platooning in left in Lind; a rookie who began the season with Class AA Harrisburg in Stevenson; a utility man acquired last month to come off the bench in October in Kendrick; and a defensive dynamo trying to rediscover his pre-injury form at the plate in Michael A. Taylor.
In an interview Monday on SiriusXM radio, wide receiver Anquan Boldin talked about his abrupt retirement after 14 years in the NFL, saying he’s “uncomfortable” with how divided the nation is and wants to dedicate his entire focus to humanitarian and criminal justice causes. Boldin specifically referenced the neo-Nazi rally and counter-protests Aug. 13 in Charlottesville, Va. “I think for me, there’s something bigger than football at this point,” he said. About two weeks ago, Boldin, 36, signed a one-year deal with the Bills. He played seven years with the Cardinals, then three for the Ravens — including a Super Bowl season in 2012 — three with the 49ers and last year with the Lions. (AP)

MIke VII starts semester at LSU
A new live tiger mascot began its “reign” as Mike VII on Monday, the first day of the fall semester, LSU announced. The 11-month-old animal arrived in Baton Rouge, La., last week from a rescue facility in Okeechobee, Fla. It was quarantined for several days so LSU veterinarians could observe it in its new home, which includes a renovated enclosure next to the football stadium. Goodell eyes new deal Roger Goodell is close to completing a five-year contract extension to serve as NFL commissioner through 2024. His current deal is through the 2019 season. The NFL surrendered its nonprofit status and no longer must disclose the salaries of top executives. Goodell, 58, made $32 million in the fiscal year 2015. According to a source, details of the extension still must be worked out between Goodell and a committee of owners. The league’s collective bargaining agreement runs through 2020, and an extension would ensure Goodell leads new negotiations for the owners. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Siemian beats out Lynch to win QB job in Denver
Alabama starts at No. 1 for second year in a row
Broncos coach Vance Joseph told reporters Monday that Trevor Siemian is his starting quarterback, ending a competition with Paxton Lynch. Last year Siemian, a 2015 seventh-round pick out of Northwestern, won the starting job over Mark Sanchez before throwing for 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 14 games. Lynch was picked in the first round pick from Memphis last year. (EXPRESS)

WELLNESS | PERSPECTIVE
Healthy in name only
You probably already know that real food is healthier than processed food. But sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s real. Foods are
manipulated and then advertised with words such as “healthy” to make them sound more nutritious than they really are — but don’t be fooled. Here’s how some well-marketed processed foods compare with the real thing. CARA ROSENBLOOM (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
Carrot sticks vs. ‘veggie sticks’
Whole-grain vs. gluten-free bread
Hamburgers vs. veggie burgers
Many parents think that “veggie sticks” (those strawlike chips made with vegetable powder) are the miracle they’ve been waiting for, because they can finally get their kids to eat vegetables. That’s because this snack’s packaging includes claims such as “made with spinach,” “now with sweet potato” and “100 percent all natural.” Please take heed: A tiny sprinkle of vegetable powder infused into a crunchy snack is not the same as eating a serving of vegetables.
Gluten-free foods were created for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. But “glutenfree” has morphed into a marketing buzzword that people erroneously equate with “healthy.” Studies show that most gluten-free foods contain more fat and salt than their gluten-containing counterparts. A whole-grain sprouted bread made from fiber-rich, wholesome ingredients is a much healthier choice than a gluten-free bread made from cornstarch, tapioca and rice flour.
Hamburgers can be as simple as beef and salt. Veggie burgers often have 20 or more ingredients, including nonnutritive cornstarch and thickeners such as methyl cellulose. And although beef burgers are naturally high in protein, most veggie burgers contain wheat gluten, a cheap protein substitute. Some veggie burgers are made of good-quality protein from beans, lentils and soy, but they may be so highly processed that the health benefits fade away.
Real milk, but remade Have trouble digesting dairy? You might want to try A2 milk. At first glance, you might think that this new milk product is a quasinatural, tinkered-with version of the real thing, but it is not. It is pure cow’s milk. It has no special additives — it is not lactose-free. What makes it different is that instead of containing A1 and A2 beta-casein proteins like ordinary cow’s milk does, it comes from cows that produce only the A2 variation of the protein. Because A1 can be hard for many people to digest, milk that contains only A2 is a helpful option. If you have trouble digesting milk — even if you think it is due to lactose intolerance — A2 milk could be the answer. The milk, which has been sold in Australia for more than a decade, is now available in grocery stores nationwide. ELLIE KRIEGER (TWP)
Loose trail mix vs. trail mix bars
Popcorn vs. Smartfood
Fried vs. baked potato chips
Good ol’ raisins and peanuts are perfect for a hike, and manufacturers have attempted to make this age-old snack even more convenient by turning it into a bar. The trouble is, to get the ingredients to fuse together, they need to add something sticky and sweet. Enter sugar. Whether it’s honey, maple syrup or agave, adding two or three teaspoons of sugar to your once-natural trail mix is never a good idea. Plain nuts, seeds and dried fruit are a better choice.
Any food that has the word “smart” in it should ring alarm bells. If marketers have to convince you that it’s a smart choice, you should read the package carefully to be sure. In this case, popcorn is your better option. A three-cup serving of oilpopped popcorn has 126 calories, no sodium and just two ingredients. Three cups of Smartfood brand (white cheddar) popcorn has more ingredients, 290 calories and 525 mg of sodium. Get smart: Buy kernels and pop your own.
Marketing has led us to believe that baked snacks are healthier than deep-fried ones. A bag of baked chips boasts “65 percent less fat.” So what? That claim was powerful in the ’90s, when we were taught that fat is bad. We now know that’s not true. In most cases, both types of chips have about the same number of calories, and the baked version often has more sodium to make up for the lack of flavor when the fat is removed. Plus, the baked version is higher in starchy carbs.

WARNING: Alcohol Ruins Lives DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK
His big mouth ruined my big day Q. It has been four months since my wedding and I am still upset about the speech my husband’s best friend gave at the reception. He has always been like a brother to my husband and I have welcomed him with open arms into our lives, and I considered him one of my best friends. But his speech was crass, sarcastic and unflattering to me and my husband. My husband gave him a pass and said he was nervous and had drunk too much. I feel like he embarrassed us at the biggest day of our lives and it has tainted the whole wedding day to me. STILL UPSET, MD I doubt you’ll be able to stop thinking about this until you figure out how to move on with your relationship with this guy. Presumably his Toast for the Ages was not enough to make you sever the relationship completely, so you need a path forward. What would you require: an apology? An acknowledgment? His fully listening as you get it off your chest? Letting things just get back to normal, with his being the mensch he always was?
Certainly, time can lessen the sting, but it will be helped by your making an effort to establish and relish the positive memories of your wedding day, through photos and others’ recollections. More good stuff equals less space for the bad stuff. I know lots of people will write me and say that this whole concern is petty, but I hope they realize that this is about being hurt by a close friend, not about a wedding being less than perfect. Right?
parents not to constantly compare their children to one another? I am in my 30s and it still is happening between me and my sister. They like her husband better, they are more impressed with her job, they are more in love with her children. It’s hard not to be bitter. I suppose I’m not looking for advice but rather to vent my frustration. PARENTS PLAYING FAVORITES
I can’t help but give some advice (it’s kind of central to my job description), so at least try to have a conversation about this. Perhaps you’ve already done everything I’d advise — choosing a non-loaded time, using “I” statements, giving specific but not ambush-y examples. You can also try to nourish your relationship with each of them individually with new common interests, so that it’s not always the Comparisons of Doom each time you’re together but rather sometimes just talking about “Stranger Things” with your dad. If all that fails, focus on insulating yourself from the hurt, taking back control by accepting the limits of the relationship. Let yourself mourn what you’ve never gotten, and work on accepting that you never will. You’ll also need to work on detaching their judgments completely from how you think of yourself. Cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques can help you keep your hurt from turning into corrosive resentment. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Another round? Making the case for repeat viewings An airplane’s in-flight entertainment recently offered me a choice of shows to watch. I picked NBC’s “Great News” — an episode I’d seen before. I watched and laughed. Ten minutes after it ended, I was feeling bored. So I watched it again. And I still laughed. This experience made me feel stupid. How could I watch the same show over and over? Then I did some research and discovered a little-known fact: The world of TV watchers

is made up of repeaters and one-timers. One-timers watch an episode and have no desire to watch it again. Then there are the rest of us. If you like an episode, why not enjoy it one more time? Or two. Or three. Not every show is worthy of re-watching. The suspense of a drama can fall flat the second time around. I don’t do “How to Get Away With Murder” reruns because I already know who got away with murder. But sitcoms are great fodder for repeaters. I polled friends and family, who confessed to
NBC/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
repeat-watching shows such as “Seinfeld,” “Broad City” and “How I Met Your Mother.” They said the shows are so dense with jokes that there’s no way you can catch them all on the first viewing. And if a joke made you laugh once, it’ll make you laugh once more. When Jerry makes Elaine chortle by standing a Pez dispenser on her leg during a piano concert, I chortle along with her.
In a way, we repeaters are reliving our childhood. Kids will watch the same episode of “Sesame Street” or “SpongeBob SquarePants” ad infinitum. There’s something comforting about the familiarity of it all. And it is nice to know what will happen next! But even diehard repeaters have their limits — typically three viewings of a single episode, based on my unscientific research. Although one
repeater said he could watch a single episode of “Golden Girls” up to 12 times. A footnote: Repeaters aren’t clueless. We recognize we might have a problem. Said one repeat viewer of her endless viewing of “Real Housewives” episodes: “I can say all their lines with them. IT IS A SAD THING.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

“Anyone have the Night King’s contact info so we can recruit him to throw javelin?” @TEAMUSA, the U.S. Olympic team, trying to recruit the Night King from “Game of Thrones” to compete in the Olympics. Abigail Breslin needed her own assistant?
THINKSTOCK AND GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
A man who claims to be Abigail Breslin’s former assistant is suing the actress for failing to pay him. According to documents obtained by TMZ, Breslin fired Michael Helms on Aug. 4. He invoiced Breslin for July and was told he wouldn’t be paid. Breslin’s team failed to reach out, so he is suing for $3,500, one month’s salary. (EXPRESS)

IN OTHER WORDS
Kylie Jenner opened up on Sunday’s episode of “Life of Kylie” about her breakup with rapper Tyga earlier this year. “There was absolutely not one thing wrong with me and T. He and I will always, always have a bond,” she said. “There was no crazy fight … I decided that I’m really young. I don’t want to look back in five years from now and feel like he took something from me when he’s really not that type of person.” (EXPRESS)
GOOD THINGS
We can all sleep tonight knowing Rose Byrne is pregnant and fabulous Rose Byrne and her boyfriend Bobby Cannavale are expecting their second child together. The actress shared the news with Australia’s Jones magazine. “I’m a little tired but feeling good,” she said. “Everyone was very sweet on set today, and you always get a little bit more attention when you’re pregnant, which is fabulous.” (EXPRESS)

Whedon’s ex-wife burns him down Kai Cole, the ex-wife of writer-director Joss Whedon, penned an essay for The Wrap, accusing him of having “multiple affairs” and being a “hypocrite preaching feminist ideals.” Cole wrote she was deceived by Whedon, who created “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and has helmed the “Avengers” films, and believed “he was one of the good guys, committed to fighting for women’s rights, committed to our marriage, and to the women he worked with.” A spokesperson for Whedon later told The Wrap that though Cole’s account “includes inaccuracies,” he would not be commenting.
