Tony city in Connecticut ready to wage war against wild turkeys

Hey, Juneau: Don’t call it ‘graffiti’; consider it street art and let it go

The Cincinnati Zoo says its popular baby hippo will star in an internet video series called “The Fiona Show.” The zoo said the first video will be available on the show’s Facebook page Tuesday. Fiona has already garnered millions of views on the zoo’s Facebook page since her premature birth in January. She was born at a tiny 29 pounds and survived several health scares. She now weighs 450 pounds. (AP)

Residents of Stamford, Conn., say they are being terrorized by wild turkeys, the Stamford Advocate reported. The birds, which can have a wingspan of 5 feet, have attacked joggers and mail carriers. Experts said the turkeys became aggressive because residents fed them regularly. “We need to harass them and ... make it uncomfortable for these turkeys to be in our neighborhood,” City Rep. Steve Kolenberg said. (EXPRESS)

A downtown crosswalk in Juneau, Alaska, has turned into an anonymous painter’s canvas. On four occasions, someone has painted each white stripe a different color, mimicking a rainbow. Residents of the grayish city seem to like the color, but Juneau bureaucrats consider it a safety hazard. They noted last week that it costs $195 to repaint the crosswalk. “It’s graffiti and we’re gonna clean it up,” streets superintendent Ed Foster said. (AP)

CSI: The dollhouse edition BALTIMORE Using a tiny paintbrush, Ariel O’Connor carefully applied a compound to preserve the charred wall of a dollhouse featuring a grisly scene: The skull of a body lying in a bed inside peers out, beseeching the viewer to determine whether this was murder. The dollhouse is one in a series of model whodunits used to train generations of police detectives in crime scene investigation. It is being cleaned, repaired and stabilized to be showcased at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery beginning in October. It is the first time the collection, built about 70 years ago, will be on public display. “The location of everything in here is important and could be a clue,” said O’Connor, a Smithsonian conservator who is spending three months at the office of the chief medical examiner in Baltimore working on the tableaus. The “attention to detail is unbelievable,” she said. “You can see the craftsmanship on such

Visitors will be given flashlights and magnifying glasses to inspect the 19 dioramas, including “Pink Bathroom,” which depicts a widow found dead in her apartment by the building’s janitor. They will also be given access to the crime scene reports that investigators would receive during

training. The solutions, however, will remain secret. Lee was a Chicago heiress who helped establish a forensic pathology program at Harvard University, earning her the title “godmother of forensic science.” Beginning in the 1940s, she meticulously built the dollhouses with the help of a carpenter, to portray homicides, suicides, and accidental and inexplicable deaths. They have been housed at the medical examiner’s office in Baltimore since 1966, after Harvard sought to discard them. To restore the pieces as Lee intended them, O’Connor depends on her carefully trained eye. She looks for clues, just like a crime scene investigator: glue residue that reveals the original placement of a can of spaghetti, or an ultraviolet light that exposes faded pencil markings. “I didn’t know the parallels between the field of forensics science and the field of art conservation,” she said. “The way we approach conservation treatments is quite similar to how detectives would approach crime scenes. “Before we touch anything, we want to know where everything is.” YVONNE WENGER (THE BALTIMORE SUN)

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. Three men allegedly involved in attacks on counter-protesters at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville this month have been charged with felonies, Charlottesville police said late Saturday. One of the men has been identified as an imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, and one of the men is still at large. Police said 18-year-old Daniel P. Borden of Mason, Ohio, is allegedly part of a group of six men who violently beat a man in a parking garage next to the Charlottesville Police Department on Aug. 12. That man, DeAndre Harris, suffered a broken wrist and a gash to his head that required 10 staples. The attack was captured on video. Another suspect, Richard W. Preston, 52, is allegedly the man seen on video shot by the American Civil Liberties Union taking out a pistol and firing a round toward a counter-protester who was wielding a flaming can of aerosol. The man then turns and walks away. Preston has identified himself to news media as the imperial wizard of the Confederate White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, based in northern Maryland. Charlottesville police have announced charges against three more people related to the Aug. 12 white nationalist rally in Virginia that left one dead.

Fort Wayne, Ind., two days after the rally and blamed the violence on the mayor of Charlottesville for reportedly instructing police not to intervene between the white supremacist protesters and the counter-protesters. Charlottesville and Virginia state police were widely criticized for not making arrests or even taking action on violence in their presence. State police officers can be seen in the video standing near where Preston fired on the counter-protester, but a state police spokeswoman said troopers didn’t hear or see the incident because of the noise and chaos. A woman who had joined the counter-protesters, Heather Heyer, 32, was killed when a car slammed into a crowd of people.

James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio, has been charged with seconddegree murder in that case. Borden was arrested Friday in Cincinnati and is being held in the Hamilton County jail on a charge of malicious wounding, Charlottesville police said in a news release. Preston was arrested Saturday on a charge of discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, and was being held in the Baltimore County jail, police said. Police were seeking help finding a third man, Alex Michael Ramos, 33, who also was allegedly involved in the beating of Harris. Ramos is also charged with malicious wounding, Charlottesville police said. TOM JACKMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Virginia parents are expected to receive more than 100,000 free baby boxes and postpartum supplies over the next year through a new initiative. The state Department of Social Services and Virginia Commonwealth University announced the program last week to reduce the number of sleep-related infant deaths. Modeled after an idea introduced in the 1930s in Finland, it will provide babies a safe sleeping place for parents without a crib or bassinet. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 3,500 U.S. babies a year die in sleep-related incidents. Virginia had 57 during the most recent fiscal year. Alabama, Ohio, Texas and Colorado have also launched initiatives since New Jersey first did so in January. (AP)

Conservative outrage unlikely to hinder his re-election, analysts say MARYLAND Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, won office in heavily Democratic Maryland three years ago by avoiding social issues and campaigning on a platform of cutting taxes and regulations and increasing jobs. So when he waded into the nation’s culture wars this month, the blowback was fierce. Members of his conservative base immediately lashed out at him, denouncing his decision to support the removal of the statue of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney from the

State House grounds in Annapolis. More than two-thirds of the nearly 700 phone calls and emails the governor’s office has received about the issue were from people opposed to moving the memorial to Taney, who defended slavery and was the author of the Dred Scott decision. Hundreds more angry comments were posted to the governor’s Facebook page. Analysts said the onslaught — which included vitriol from supporters of President Trump who also are upset that Hogan did not support efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act — will have little impact on Hogan’s bid to become the first two-term Republican governor in nearly 60 years.

They don’t vote statues.” Greg Collins, who served as a Trump delegate in 2016, said he and many others are hoping that Hogan is challenged in the primary by a Republican who supports repealing the Affordable Care Act and keeping statues like Taney’s in place. The governor “has abso lutely turned his back on his base,” he said. “He needs to come back to the center and stop playing in the left sandbox.” OVETTA WIGGINS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

North Korea fired several rockets into the sea Saturday in the continuation of its nuclear and missile expansion. South Korea, meanwhile, moved forward with drills involving U.S. troops, exercises that have angered Pyongyang. The U.S. Pacific Command revised its initial assessment that the first and third short-range missiles failed during flight to say they flew about 155 miles. It said the second missile appears to have blown up immediately, and that none posed a threat to the U.S. territory of Guam, which the North had previously warned it would fire missiles toward. (AP)

President Trump on Friday directed the Pentagon to ban the recruitment of openly transgender people, but is leaving it to military leaders to determine whether individuals already in the armed forces should be allowed to continue to serve. The directive also prevents the military from providing medical treatment for sex-reassignment surgeries. In reversing an Obama administration policy, the White House cited concerns that it could “hinder military effectiveness.” Trump announced the change in several tweets July 26. The Pentagon said it wouldn’t make changes until it received formal orders. (TWP)

Freelance U.S. journalist Christopher Allen was killed in civil war-torn South Sudan, the U.S. Embassy said Saturday. South Sudan’s army said he was caught in fighting between the government and opposition forces. But the opposition’s deputy spokesman alleged that Allen “was targeted and killed by the government forces for photographing the fight.” Allen and two other journalists had spent two weeks with rebel forces and were in their barracks when attacked. into the hotel, where they are stranded with dozens of other guests. “We went through Katrina, but this feels different,” she said. Instead of a gradual buildup of rising water, “this was like a gush of water that came up too fast.” By Sunday afternoon, the Weather Service was predicting that parts of Texas could receive nearly 50 inches of rain, which would be the largest recorded total in the state’s history. Communities in southeast Texas, already experiencing water so high that it engulfed vehicles up to their door handles, were continually being beaten down by heavy, sideways rain. More than 82,000 homes were without electricity, and local news stations reported that Ben Taub Hospital, one of two trauma centers in the city, would soon have to evacuate. As it scrambles to open shelters across Texas, the Red Cross command center in Houston is now “physically isolated” because of floodwaters, said Paul Carden, district director of Red Cross activities in South Texas, which includes Corpus Christi. Desperate families and residents crafted strategies of their own to deal with the storm. At the urging of Houston police, they set out with boats and kayaks to help their friends in need. Families in flooded homes blew up inflatable pool toys to ferry children.

HURRICANE HARVEY More than 3,000 national and state guard troops are being deployed to assist with relief and recovery efforts as the nation’s fourth-largest city and surrounding areas try to cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which has transformed into a disaster of historic proportions. President Trump plans to travel to Texas on Tuesday. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the White House is still coordinating logistics with state and local officials. “We continue to keep all of those affected in our thoughts and prayers,” she said. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the perpetual rain and dire flash flooding have produced the strongest storm the state has seen in at least 50 years. He could not confirm death totals nor the number of evacuations, but the National Weather Service has said there have been reports of as many as five deaths. The service issued a statement that the storm was “catastrophic” and “beyond anything experienced.” Outside the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in southwest Houston, Nichelle Mosby stood up to her knees in floodwater in the parking lot Sunday. Mosby and six family members had come from Louisiana to visit relatives. When Harvey hit over the weekend, they checked

Flooding ‘to worsen’ Almost 30 inches of rain have fallen in parts of Southeast Texas, and more is on the way For Houston, brutal deluges are nothing new

Houston Police SWAT officer Daryl Hudeck rescues Connie Pham and her 13-month-old son, Aiden, on Sunday.

DAVID J. PHILLIP (AP)

HURRICANE HARVEY The worst fears of flooding are starting to be realized with Harvey as it unloads some of the most extreme rainfall Houston and other parts of southeast Texas have ever witnessed. And much more rain is still to come. “Catastrophic flooding in the Houston metropolitan area is expected to worsen,” the National Weather Service said Sunday morning. It later added: “This event is unprecedented and all impacts are unknown and beyond anything experienced.” One to 2 feet of rain have already fallen, with some locations nearing 30 inches. The National Weather Service said some parts of Houston and just west of the city may receive a Texas record of 50 inches of rain as Tropical Storm Harvey stalls over Texas.

Residents of a south Texas city who evacuated before Harvey made landfall on the Texas coast as a hurricane are being warned not to return unless they bring their own food and water. Officials with Victoria, about 90 miles north of Rockport, said Sunday on Facebook that the city of 85,000 has no water service and limited power. The city statement says: “For those that decide to come back to Victoria, bring enough food and water to last three to four days. Be sure you have enough gas in your car to last several days. Be prepared for no electricity at your home for several days or weeks.”

Helicopter rescues Coast Guard Capt. Kevin Oditt said Sunday that helicopters had rescued more than 100 people in the Houston area. He said people facing rising floodwaters should not go into attics, since

rescuers in the air cannot see them. The incident commander urged people who headed to their rooftops to wave sheets, towels or anything else to attract the attention of helicopter crews. Coast Guard helicopter crews along the southern portion of the Texas coast reported the rescue of almost 40 people, starting from the morning before Hurricane Harvey made landfall.

Why no evacuation? Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner defended his decision not to ask residents to evacuate before the heavy rains hit. Turner said Sunday it would have been a “nightmare” to empty out the population of his city and the county all at once. “If you think the situation right now is bad and you give an order to evacuate, you are creating a

nightmare,” he said. “You literally cannot put 6.5 million people on the road.” Turner asked people to stay in their homes and not drive if at all possible. Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena said authorities have made more than 250 vehicle rescues in the storm.

FEMA sends federal help William “Brock” Long, who has been the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for just two months, is coordinating the federal response to the first Category 3 or greater storm to hit the U.S. in 12 years. “This will be a devastating disaster, probably the worst disaster the state’s seen,” he said. “The recovery to this event is going to last many years, to be able to help Texas and the people impacted by this event achieve a new normal.” Long said 5,000 federal employees were already in Texas responding to the developing disaster. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

HURRICANE HARVEY Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas coast some 175 miles from Houston, but the nation’s fourth-largest city has never needed a direct strike from a catastrophic storm to flood. Regularly inundated by floodwaters ever since its settlement in the mid-1800s, Houston looked on warily even before Harvey roared ashore. In Houston, the chronic deluges that have repeatedly swamped its neighborhoods are getting worse and more costly — not just for locals, but for federal taxpayers. An Associated Press analysis of government data found last year that if the county that is home to Houston were a state, it would have ranked in the top five or six in every category of repeat flood losses. That’s defined as any property with two or more losses each totaling at least $1,000 in a 10-year period. Nationally, repeat federal flood relief payouts averaged about $3,000 per square mile. But in greater Houston, the payouts were nearly a whopping $500,000 per square mile. Harvey has swamped roads and paralyzed neighborhoods throughout the city. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said more than 2,000 calls for help had been received by midday Sunday. Flooding was so bad that residents were being urged to seek refuge on their roofs. (AP)

Militia fighters backing Iraqi troops pose Sunday with Iraq’s flag in Tal Afar.

Confident military of Iraq retakes city TAL AFAR, IRAQ Iraq’s military reclaimed this northern city from the Islamic State on Sunday in a rapid campaign that defied expectations that the extremist group would put up fierce resistance in one of its last major strongholds. The eight-day battle for Tal Afar highlighted the diminished capabilities of the Islamic State in Iraq a month after it lost the key bastion of Mosul to Iraqi forces backed by U.S.-led airstrikes. Some pockets of resistance remained Sunday in Tal Afar, but senior Iraqi military officers said the Islamic State has lost the will to fight in the face of a motivated and increasingly more professional military. Haider al-Abadi authorize his forces to launch simultaneous battles for the last major cities that the Islamic State controls. Since the Islamic State took over nearly one-third of Iraq’s territory in 2014, Abadi has opted to reclaim cities one by one while the U.S. and other Western nations have helped to rebuild Iraq’s armed forces. Now, with more than three years of combat experience, Iraq’s security forces are eager to quicken the pace of the fight, with some commanders urging that the battles for the two remaining Islamic State strongholds, Hawija and Qaim, be launched at the same time. German woman, 51, dies; death toll in attacks hits 16

Ongoing clashes leave 96 dead, including six civilians

A 51-year-old German woman died Sunday from injuries suffered in the Aug. 17 vehicle attack in Barcelona, Spain, raising the combined death toll in the van attack and the vehicleand-knife attack that occurred a day later to 16, local health officials said. The woman died in the intensive care unit of Barcelona’s Hospital del Mar. More than 120 people were wounded in the attacks. Authorities said 24 remained hospitalized, five of them in critical condition. (AP)

Myanmar’s government and advocates for the country’s Muslim Rohingya ethnic minority traded charges Sunday of killing civilians as clashes that began Thursday night — when Rohingya rebels attacked police posts — continued. The country’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, said the death toll from the violence had reached 96, mostly alleged Rohingya attackers but also 12 security personnel. Six civilians are said to have been killed. (AP)

Ex-Ariz. sheriff dodges legal troubles again

verbatim

“I don’t believe anyone doubts the American people’s values. … The president speaks for himself.”

Trump pardons Arpaio, who has a long history of probes and scandals

SECRETARY OF STATE REX TILLERSON, saying Sunday on

MARY ALTAFFER (AP)

POLITICS In his 24 years as metro Phoenix’s sheriff, Joe Arpaio survived scandals and dodged investigations that would easily have sunk the careers of many politicians. He locked up journalists and made criminal cases against political adversaries who tangled with him, investigated judges and misspent $100 million in jail funds. Arpaio let investigations into child rape cases languish because officers were pulled away, in part, to help in his efforts to arrest illegal immigrants. Arpaio, 85, was found to have violated the civil rights of Latinos in a racial profiling case expected to cost taxpayers $92 million by next summer. His critics felt like they had finally won a measure of accountability against the lawman after he was found guilty this month on a misdemeanor contempt charge for flouting the courts in carrying out his signature immigration patrols. But their victory was upended when a pardon by his most powerful political ally — President Trump — allowed Arpaio to wiggle out of legal jeopardy again. For Arpaio, the pardon is the ultimate vindication after repeatedly complaining that he was being unfairly targeted

Joe Arpaio’s immigration crackdown made him an early ally of the president.

for merely enforcing the law in arresting immigrants in the country illegally. He celebrated the victory at an Italian restaurant with his wife and said he’ll discuss more about his future this week. The former sheriff vowed to remain active politically, and issued a fundraising appeal for his legal defense fund within an hour or two of the pardon’s announcement Friday afternoon. Arpaio, reached Saturday, declined to comment further. A judge nominated to the bench by former President George W. Bush ordered Arpaio to stop his immigration patrols in 2011 amid allegations that his officers were racially profiling Latinos. The judge later found Arpaio’s office

systematically profiled Latinos, and recommended a criminal charge against the sheriff for prolonging the patrols 17 months after he had ordered them stopped. The pardon drew widespread condemnation among Latinos, Democrats and some Republicans, who believe the move is offensive to immigrants at a time of deep racial divisions in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville, Va. But some conservatives said the action was long overdue. “It’s a misdemeanor equal to a barking dog complaint,” said Tom Morrissey, a former chairman of the Arizona Republican Party. “To spend millions of taxpayer dollars to go after Sheriff Joe for doing his job, I think, was kind of ridiculous.” JACQUES BILLEAUD (AP)

Fox News that U.S. commitment to tolerance and equality is unchanged in the wake of controversy over President Trump’s response to racially tinged violence. Asked whether he was “separating himself” from Trump’s remarks blaming “many sides” for the violence in Charlottesville, Va., Tillerson answered, “I’ve made my own comment as to our values.”

Woman, 97, awarded honorary diploma

A Michigan woman, Iris Weatherwax, 97, received her high school diploma eight decades after being kicked out of school for being pregnant. In 1938, Davison Community Schools barred Weatherwax from returning to classes after she became pregnant while married to her husband, Lloyd. She said that failing to get a high school diploma was one of the biggest regrets of her life, and finally receiving an honorary diploma, cap and gown last week was wonderful. Drug may offer new way to curb heart attacks HEALTH For the first time, a drug has helped prevent heart attacks by curbing inflammation, a new and very different approach than lowering cholesterol, the focus for many years. People on the drug also had surprisingly lower cancer death rates, especially from lung cancer. An anti-tumor effect is an exciting possibility, but it needs much more study. Doctors say the results for the drug, canakinumab, open a new frontier. Many heart attacks occur in people whose cholesterol is normal and whose main risk is chronic inflammation that can lead to clogged arteries. “We suddenly know we can address the inflammation itself, the same way we learned almost 25 years ago that we could address cholesterol. It’s very exciting,” said the study’s leader, Dr. Paul Ridker of Boston. In the study, the drug was tested in 10,000 heart attack survivors with low cholesterol. Those on a medium dose had a 15 percent lower chance of a heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death over the next four years compared to people who were given dummy shots. Results were published Sunday by the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet, and presented at the European Society of Cardiology conference in Barcelona, Spain. The drug’s maker, Novartis, sponsored the study. MARILYNN MARCHIONE (AP)

NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3 | REDSKINS 23, BENGALS 17

MARK TENALLY (AP)

Washington offense takes baby steps The Redskins entered their home game against the Bengals on Sunday knowing it would be the starters’ last chance to answer critiques of an offense that stumbled in two exhibition games. Washington started slowly but improved before halftime. Here are four takeaways. MIKE JONES AND MASTER TESFATSION (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Top: Kirk Cousins threw a pick six but directed a 75-yard touchdown drive. Bottom: Terrelle Pryor Sr. hauls in a 17-yard catch to convert a third down.

Run game leads the way

Scherff still struggling

Defense a work in progress

Rookies have potential

Near the end of the second quarter, the offense finally showed signs of life. The unit hit a low when Kirk Cousins threw a pick six to Vontaze Burfict but bounced back with a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. After managing just 0.9 yards per carry in his first two preseason games, Rob Kelley ran 10 times for 57 yards and a score in the first half. With the run game clicking, things opened up in the passing game. On the TD drive, Cousins (10-for-19, 109 yards) connected with Terrelle Pryor Sr. on a 17-yard completion that converted a third down. Cousins also hit Jamison Crowder on a slant that put Washington at the Bengals’ 3-yard line and set up Kelley’s TD.

The Redskins blamed much of their offensive struggles up front on a lack of game-planning for the first two preseason games. They did game plan for the Cincinnati defense, and they still started the game with a pair of three-andouts. On the second offensive possession, facing third-and-9, Brandon Scherff whiffed on his assignment, and Kirk Cousins was called for intentional grounding as he tried to get rid of the ball to avoid a sack. That play continued an uncharacteristically shaky preseason for the Pro Bowl guard, who has lost one-on-one matchups in practice and struggled in all three preseason games.

The talent has been overhauled, but some of the same problems remain. Washington yielded nine first downs to the Bengals’ first team, and let them succeed on four of six third-down attempts. But there are encouraging signs. Preston Smith and Ryan Kerrigan applied good pressure. Defensive lineman Stacy McGee stood out after a quiet start. Mason Foster appears to be the best choice at the “Mike” linebacker position because he’s more physical and has more range than Will Compton. D.J. Swearinger is an upgrade at free safety, and Deshazor Everett has filled in well for Su’a Cravens, but we haven’t yet seen game-changing plays at safety.

Washington’s draft class has good upside. Jonathan Allen had another solid outing on the defensive line. Second-rounder Ryan Anderson missed another game with a neck stinger, but third-round pick Fabian Moreau made splashes at cornerback and on special teams, as did fourth-rounder Montae Nicholson, a safety. Seventhrounder Joshua Holsey made some nice pass breakups and had a sack. Samaje Perine had a quiet outing with 5 yards on five carries. Sixthround center Chase Roullier didn’t have any glaring issues while filling in for Spencer Long, who could remain sidelined beyond Week 1 with a knee injury.

Eagles acquire CB Dexter McDougle from Jets for safety Terrence Brooks

Tonight against the Marlins, Max Scherzer will make his first start since going on the disabled list for neck inflammation Aug. 15. Nationals manager Dusty Baker said Scherzer would take the mound in Washington (7:05, MASN2) after the right-hander threw a bullpen session Friday and played catch Saturday without showing symptoms. Scherzer (12-5, 2.25 ERA) removed himself from a game at Miami on Aug. 1 because of a stiff neck but rebounded with two strong starts. Then he felt the same discomfort and went on the DL for the first time in more than eight years. The Nats lost to the Mets 6-5 in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader. The second ended after Express’ deadline. (TWP)

UFC’s top draw would entertain offers to box again after lucrative loss COMBAT SPORTS Conor McGregor emerged from his locker room, carrying a bottle of whiskey and looking nothing like a beaten man late Saturday in Las Vegas. In the news conference that followed McGregor’s megafight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., a reporter asked about the differences between boxing and mixed martial arts. Mayweather, chummy after winning with a 10th-round technical knockout, softly told him: the money. “The check is not bad,” McGregor chuckled Money was the obvious driving force that lured a UFC champion

to step into a ring against one of the best boxers of all time. With the match over, the fighters and their respective sports immediately started processing the ramifications of the bout. Boxing enjoyed a good night and has other big dates on the 2017 calendar, but the sport’s biggest name is still a man who was retired for two years before Saturday. After watching lightheavyweight champion Jon Jones fail a drug test last week and concentrating on Saturday’s fight, UFC officials are eager to get back in the mixed martial arts business full time. For now, it appears there will be no rematch. Mayweather, 40, reiterated his intentions to never fight again, so most of the post-fight curiosity surrounded McGregor’s future.

McGregor keeps options open

Conor McGregor, left, lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. by technical knockout.

“I would rather he did not [box again],” UFC President Dana White said. “This isn’t what he does. … I think he did great tonight. I don’t think there’s anything left for him to prove.”

McGregor, 29, would make no guarantees about his future, but he said he has options and declared himself “a free agent.” While MMA is clearly his strong suit, McGregor did show

NO TRADE YET

Thomas’ hip puts deal in jeopardy

The Astros and Rangers canceled plans to travel to Houston on Sunday because of floodwaters that have engulfed the city. Both teams made plans to head to Dallas until a decision is made on their series, which was scheduled to begin Tuesday. In the NFL, the Texans also planned to go to Dallas after playing at New Orleans on Saturday night. (AP)

After agreeing on a trade to send Kyrie Irving to the Celtics for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a 2018 first-round pick, the Cavaliers are evaluating a lingering right hip injury to Thomas. A trade can be voided if a player fails his physical. The Cavs have until Wednesday to finalize the deal. They could cancel it or — more likely — try to get more from Boston. (AP)

Brewers minor leaguer stable after cardiac event Arizona League third baseman Julio Mendez was hospitalized in critical but stable condition after suffering a “cardiac event” following a hit by pitch, the Brewers said. that he can be formidable in a boxing ring, capable of landing punches and absorbing big shots. He put up a respectable fight until his stamina waned, and may have performed well enough to elicit more boxing suitors. McGregor’s odds will always be better in the octagon, but his pay there is limited. He likely earned as much as $100 million Saturday night, dwarfing what UFC could pay for a single fight. McGregor has told White that he’d like to fight again this year and made a passing reference Saturday to a possible third battle against Nate Diaz. But with the loss to Mayweather fresh and the whiskey bottle nearby, it was no time for guarantees. “People ask me what’s next — I’m not quite sure what’s next,” he said. SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, PA. | Players from Japanese team Tokyo Kitasuna celebrate the winning run Sunday of their 12-2 victory over Lufkin, Texas, in the Little League World Series. Japan ended the game in the fifth inning when it took a 10-run lead. A team from Japan has won the series 11 times, and five times in the last eight years.

STREAMING Netflix is well on its way to having it all. In its mission to replace the old means of watching TV and going to the movies, the streaming behemoth with 100 million worldwide subscribers seeks to offer at least one of every sort of show a viewer might like, pushing toward a goal of 50 percent original programming. The pace and budget size are impressive (a reported $6 billion spent in the last year making its own stuff), but Netflix is still lacking one vital thing: identity. Netflix ain’t got time for that. For now, the service stands mainly for the idea that more is more. Beginning with “House of Cards” (its first original series, which debuted in 2013), Netflix has delivered more than 200 original dramas, comedies, talk shows, culinary shows and stand-up specials. Netflix also

now boasts a considerable array of its own kids shows, to gather all ye little children. It brings out stunning documentaries, and makes wretched Adam Sandler films, along with such odd jewels as this year’s “Okja.” It has even gathered up multiple Emmy nominations (its total nods this year are second only to HBO). With all this, why would Netflix ever stop to have an existential worry about its creative sense of self? Because, as any Netflix subscriber eventually realizes, the overall effect can be like wandering in a Walmart without aisles — a feeling that everything is indeed here, but a lot of it is sort of cheap. Subscribers rarely hear anything about Netflix’s vision from someone with impeccable taste and unwavering standards and a certainty of what kind of content it stands for. Many of Netflix’s competitors have this figured out. Look at how Netflix triumphantly unleashes a new show, gathers a moment’s buzz, finds success with a niche of fans and moves

on — with little lasting impact on the cultural conversation. Of all the shows Netflix has released, how many of them manage to reach common reference points, the way HBO’s “Game of Thrones” or NBC’s “This Is Us” or Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” have done? The answer is perhaps three — “Stranger Things,” “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black” — three shows that are wildly different, entertaining and memorable for no shared reason or vision, except that they are riding the awesome wave of Netflix. That doesn’t mean that Netflix aims to only throw as much spaghetti against the wall as it

can, just to see what sticks. The company craves the respect and acclaim that come with artistic identity. In various interviews, Netflix’s top executives — chief executive Reed Hastings and content chief Ted Sarandos — have talked about Netflix’s need to take more risks, prodding creators to deliver edgier shows that will make viewers notice more than just the size of the menu and portions. Netflix has succeeded in convincing subscribers that it offers something better than broadcast and cable. Now what it needs to show viewers is that beyond its size, it has a soul.

The third season of “Narcos,” Netflix’s series about Pablo Escobar and other Colombian drug lords, homes in on the rise of the Cali cartel and its battles with the government and U.S. authorities. (EXPRESS)

Starring Adam Scott and Evangeline Lilly, “Little Evil” is a Netflix original film about a newly married man who thinks his stepson is a demon. The horror-comedy also stars Bridget Everett, Chris D’Elia and others.

Spotify said Saturday that Taylor Swift set a global first-day streaming record on the platform, logging more than 8 million streams for her new single, “Look What You Made Me Do.” And YouTube said the song’s lyric video broke its record for same-day views, with more than 19 million in 24 hours. Don't Know Where to Start on

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

A caped comedian: ‘The Tick’ is a hero with a funny bone Like every good superhero, the new TV series “The Tick” has a secret identity. On its surface, the Amazon show — which began streaming its full first season Friday — tells the story of a crime fighter (played by Peter Serafinowicz) named for the hardy arachnid. He wears a blue armor-plated costume (bullets bounce off it) with a pair of wobbly blue antennae. He’s as strong as “10, perhaps 20 men — a crowded bus stop of men.” His dialogue delightfully mocks superhero speak: “When destiny speaks, she speaks to me. She says, ‘Hi,’ by the way.” (If the character

sounds familiar, it’s because he’s been around in comic books, video games and two previous TV series.) But this Tick reboot isn’t just goofy. Lurking beneath the silliness is the sorrowful story of another man, Arthur Everest (Griffin Newman), who was traumatized for life when, as a boy, he saw his dad obliterated by a skycraft crashed by a supervillain called the Terror. The nowadult Arthur has an obsession. Everyone thinks the Terror is dead, but he is convinced the Terror is alive and conniving to take over his city. The nervous accountant has covered a wall of his apartment with documents and articles to prove it.

$10M

After a random encounter with the Tick, Arthur ends up wearing a special suit stolen from the bad guys. The gray outfit has its advantages, like cushioning Arthur’s fall from a great height. It also has insect-like wings and two whimsical feathers sprouting from the headgear. An embarrassed Arthur steals a poncho to cover it up, causing the shopkeeper to deliver one of the show’s many wry lines: “You cannot borrow a poncho. This is not a poncho library.” The Tick and Arthur are the classic odd couple. The confident Tick believes superheroes can save the day. Arthur says, “I’m not a hero. I don’t think that heroes solve anything.” The show’s superchallenge is to balance goofiness and poignancy, super-cheesy feats and emotional rawness. In its first few episodes, “The Tick” ticks off all those boxes. I guess destiny must be talking to the show’s writers.

“I’m just trying to hold someone close to me the way Conor McGregor held Floyd Mayweather. Is that too much to ask for?” @PSYCHOMAN540, joking about Conor McGregor “hugging” Floyd Mayweather in their boxing match Saturday night. The “hugs,” aka a defense technique called clinching, were among the most parodied elements of the fight. People photoshopped the fighters on top of the Titanic as if they were in Rose and Jack’s iconic scene from the 1997 film. Saturday’s bout wasn’t a love story, but the opponents did exchange a real-life hug after Mayweather beat McGregor in the 10th round.
