Authorities say a vibrating device that claims to fight wrinkles as it rolls over a person’s face forced a Southwest Airlines flight to evacuate in New Mexico. Albuquerque Aviation Police told news station KOB-TV that passengers were ordered off the plane Monday after the anti-aging skin roller was discovered in the back of a seat. Authorities say the flight crew moved the item to the galley, and police searched the plane. (AP)

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office in southwest Washington says someone has periodically been tossing apples on roofs. Sometimes the culprit leaves a note, as was the case when he recently struck at a home in Hazel Dell. In the note, the culprit claimed he targeted five homes — three apples per house. (AP)

SafeTrack prompts changes to D.C. race
Nearly 30,000 runners took part in the Marine Corps Marathon in the District last year.

They needed Metro to open two hours early for the marathon, as it has in years past, to ferry some of the nearly 30,000 runners to the race. Metro had warned in May that its year-long rebuilding program meant a moratorium on early openings and late closings for special events. But race coordinators were having trouble

adjusting the course and schedule with local jurisdictions that didn’t want to comply with a new timeline — lest it affect Sunday shopping and traffic. Less than two weeks before the meeting, a Silver Line train derailed. The week of the meeting, the Federal Transit Administration released a scathing report on the system’s track maintenance program. “When we went there on that Wednesday, [Wiedefeld] says, ‘If I even thought for a second that I would be able to help you, all bets are off. … There’s no way I can do a one-day modification to let you have it,” race director Rick Nealis said, recalling the meeting. “They wished us well. ” To accommodate for late arrivals, the marathon’s starting line on Route 110 in Arlington will remain open for an extra hour, until 8:55 a.m., and runners will be timed based on when they begin the race. The expanded window also accommodates wheelchair and hand-cycle racers, who begin at 7:40 a.m. FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Port City Brewing, a 5-year-old Alexandria-based brewery, will receive $500,000 from the city and Virginia to help fund an expansion of its storage and production plant, creating 26 new jobs, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Wednesday. Port City, one of 160 craft breweries in Virginia, will invest $2.68 million itself to lease a new warehouse near its existing headquarters, and will build a satellite storage facility, in addition to upgrading its bottling capacity from about 300,000 cases per year, said Port City founder Bill Butcher. THE DISTRICT Holding to its pledge that it won’t disrupt its SafeTrack schedule for special events, Metro will not open early for the Marine Corps Marathon, so race organizers are adjusting the course and start time, and providing alternate transportation. The annual showcase draws thousands of runners and hundreds of thousands of spectators, for whom Metro is the primary form of transportation. This year, participants in the Oct. 30 race will have to rely on a series of shuttle buses, beginning at 4:30 a.m., that will whisk them from local hotels and residential areas to the warm-up area near the Pentagon. The race schedule also has been staggered. The changes come after unsuccessful pleas from Marine Brigadier Gen. Thomas D. Weidley and marathon officials in a meeting with Metro General Manager Paul

A seasonal slowdown With summer ending and students back at school, traffic is already getting much worse

WASHINGTONPOST.COM DR. GRIDLOCK
Report: Metro hiring ‘directly off the street’
MARVIN JOSEPH (THE WASHINGTON POST)
REGION If it suddenly feels like traffic, especially on your morning commute, is growing more maddening by the day, you’re right — and the hard numbers that prove your misery show that it’s going to get even worse. Yes, traffic analysts say, the summer fun is over. What the experts call “September shock” is as real as your fading beach tan. If past comparisons of August and September are any guide, the amount of time commuters spend stuck in traffic each morning has already started to jump by 15 percent to 45 percent. That’s just an average for the Washington region. Some particularly bad bottlenecks — parts of I-66, I-270, I-95, U.S. 29 and other major commuter corridors — have started to see delays nearly double, according to a new analysis by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, or COG. COG analysts say September shock actually starts the third week of August and ramps up gradually. Motorists feel the impacts long before the dreaded — and, experts say, overblown — “terrible traffic Tuesday” following Labor Day. The percentage increase pertains only to the amount of time delayed, not to entire commutes. Traffic congestion in and around the nation’s capital is so chronic that trips take, on average, anywhere from 10 percent to 25 percent longer than they would in free-flowing traffic, depending on the time of year. The reason late summer is so painful is because August has the shortest delays of the year, while
Undertrained workers, confusing manuals, a lack of communication — sounds like Metro. According to a newly released report by the American Public Transportation Association, Metro’s track inspection and maintenance program is in need of a major overhaul. Here’s the bad and the good: (TWP)
Parts of I-66 in Virginia have started to see delays nearly double as summer winds down and school resumes.
September typically has some of the longest. What would be a 30-minute morning commute in free-flowing traffic might have taken a relatively blissful 33 to 36 minutes in early August. It’s that three to six minutes of delay that’s increasing as more school systems reopen and motorists return from vacation. So the morning commute that’s been 33 to 36 minutes in August will jump to between 34.5 and 39 minutes. A few minutes tacked on each way might not seem like much, but some motorists drive far longer than 30 minutes, meaning that they’ll spend far longer in growing delays. Those who have to travel through the worst bottlenecks also will see a much bigger jump at peak times, the analysts said. It also feels worse, experts say, because even a few minutes more can add up to an extra half-hour or more every week
“September is one of the worst goodweather months until we start the downhill slide into the holidays.” BEN HAMPTON, a regional transportation planner for COG, on the region’s terrible traffic
fuming behind the wheel. And multiplying the delays across the Washington region means a lot more time stuck in backups rather than working or making deliveries. “When you add it up across the whole region, it has a big economic impact,” said Ben Hampton, a regional transportation planner for COG. COG officials suspect the jump correlates most strongly with schools reopening because
morning delays grow much worse than in the afternoons and evenings. Metro’s SafeTrack maintenance program didn’t have a significant impact on traffic in July or early August, COG analysts said. However, they said, they want to look at that again for September and October, when schools will be in full swing and Metro continues to single-track trains and shut down parts of rail lines for maintenance work. The first surge in the year-long SafeTrack program started in early June, when schools had already begun to let out for the summer. So what’s a motorist to do? Hampton suggests telecommuting or avoiding peak driving times. And take heart, he says. By mid-October, traffic will gradually begin to decline throughout the fall and winter holidays, before it blooms again in the spring. KATHERINE SHAVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Workers are “hired directly off the street” … According to APTA’s report, “There appears to be no minimum aptitude or practical testing aligned to the track inspection functions for hiring. Track Walkers are allowed to be hired directly off the street without prior track knowledge.” The training program takes 18 weeks; APTA thinks it should be longer.
… but they’re enthusiastic! From the report: “Track Engineering is comprised of an enthusiastic group committed to on-going improvements to the track infrastructure.”

Hogan orders schools to start after Labor Day
STADIUM DEAL
McAuliffe pleads directly to Redskins
MARYLAND Gov. Larry Hogan signed an executive order Wednesday to start Maryland public schools after Labor Day, citing economic and health reasons. Opponents criticized the governor for setting the policy by executive order, ignoring input from educators who largely oppose the idea. The change is set to take effect next year. It requires public schools to complete the 180 days required under state law. It also requires the school year to end by June 15. The order allows for a waiver, if a school system has a compelling justification. The Republican governor signed the order on the boardwalk in Ocean City, with Comptroller Peter Franchot, a Democrat, by his side. “Comptroller Franchot has been a longtime leading advocate of this idea of having Maryland public schools start after Labor Day, as they always did in the

past, and I strongly agree with him, because this isn’t just a family issue, it’s an economic and public safety issue, and it’s an issue that draws strong bipartisan support among an overwhelming majority of Marylanders,” Hogan said. Legislative leaders quickly questioned the use of executive order to create the policy, and they were waiting for an attorney general’s opinion on the action. “Rather than the extraordinary

and legally questionable use of the executive order, it would have been more appropriate for the governor to sponsor this matter as an administration bill, which he has never done,” said Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, a Democrat, who described the governor’s boardwalk announcement as “making a press show about an issue over a year in advance while holding hands with the state tax collector.”
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is making no secret of his desire to lure the Redskins to his state with the promise of a new stadium. At the Redskins’ annual preseason luncheon Wednesday, McAuliffe made a public, passionate case to owner Dan Snyder. “I want to thank the Redskins for being such a great economic driver,” McAuliffe said. “We have your headquarters. We have your training facility. What else could there possibly be? Let me say this, Dan: Think about Virginia.” (AP)

Is this the end of lost, delayed airline luggage?
Passengers of JetBlue flight 387 — the first U.S.-to-Cuba commercial flight in decades — wave the two countries’ flags.
Flight from U.S. to Cuba marks a new travel era Countries re-establish commercial air service after half-century ban TRANSPORTATION The first commercial flight between the United States and Cuba in more than a half-century landed in the central city of Santa Clara on Wednesday morning, re-establishing regular air service severed at the height of the Cold War. Cheers broke out in the cabin of JetBlue flight 387 as the plane touched down. Passengers — mostly airline executives, U.S. government officials and journalists, with a sprinkling of Cuban-American families and U.S. travelers — were given gift bags with Cuban cookbooks,
commemorative luggage tags and Cuban flags. The arrival opens a new era of U.S.-Cuba travel, with about 300 flights a week connecting the U.S. with an island cut off from most Americans by the 55-year-old trade embargo on Cuba and formal ban on U.S. citizens engaging in tourism on the island. “Seeing the American airlines landing routinely around the island will drive a sense of openness, integration and normality. That has a huge psychological impact,” said Richard Feinberg, author of “Open for Business: Building the New Cuban Economy.” Also Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the carriers selected to operate routes to Havana: Alaska
$18.3M
Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines. The department said in a statement that carriers will serve the Cuban capital from Atlanta, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York City, Orlando and Tampa. The restart of commercial travel between the two countries is one of the most important steps in President Barack Obama’s 2-year-old policy of normalizing relations with the island. Historians disagree on the exact date of the last commercial flight but it appears to have been after Cuba banned incoming flights during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN (AP)
Delta Air Lines has invested $50 million to decrease lost and delayed luggage. The airline carried nearly 120 million checked bags last year and already has one of the industry’s best records — just one of every 500 bags failed to arrive on time. The new system uses radio-frequency identification, or RFID, in the technology’s first global use for passenger bags. If it succeeds, other airlines will likely follow suit. RFID wirelessly identifies tags attached to items, meaning you can find your bags on those dreaded conveyor belts. Delta says the tags cost less than 10 cents each and the system will be live in 344 airports by today. (AP)
CHEATING TIME
The amount of money that thousands of employees who review patents for the federal government potentially cheated taxpayers out of. Workers billed the Patent and Trademark Office for almost 300,000 hours they never worked, according to a new investigation by the agency’s watchdog, which looked at records covering 15 months from 2014 to 2015. The lost time couldn’t have helped the office with its patent backlog, which was at 550,000 applications last spring. Calif. church offers AA-style meeting, but for racists As tensions grow amid police shootings of black men and a presidential campaign rife with allegations of racism, many are calling for an honest conversation about race in America. One pastor in Sunnyvale, Calif., is offering a venue to get people talking: Racists Anonymous. With the familiar backdrop of a 12-step program, people can explore the often uncharted terrain of their own feelings about race, said Ron Buford, pastor of the Congregational Community Church. “The first step is that you have to acknowledge that you have a problem,” he said. Other steps include making a list of people you have harmed and making amends, as well as taking personal inventory of when you have behaved wrongly, and admitting it. The Sunnyvale program started in 2015, following headlines of police shootings and Dylann Roof’s shooting rampage at a historically black church in Charleston. About a dozen people began meeting Thursdays. Since then, as tensions have intensified, more than 30 other churches have requested materials to start their own groups — from Baltimore to Coral Gables, Fla. Eventually, Buford imagines a network stretching across the country, so that, like Alcoholics Anonymous, people can drop into an RA meeting wherever they go. MICHAEL ALISON CHANDLER

Brazil impeaches president A Practical Management Education for an Increasingly Technical World
BRAZIL Brazil’s Senate ousted Dilma Rousseff as president Wednesday, voting overwhelmingly to impeach the leftist leader in the culmination of a protracted process that has divided the country. The vote to impeach Rousseff was 61 to 20. Two-thirds of senators — 54 of 81 — were needed for impeachment to pass. Senators broke into cheering and applause after the electronic voting was announced, and sang the national anthem, concluding a process that was given the goahead in December. eight years fell well short of the required two-thirds supermajority, as 42 senators voted in favor of the penalty, with 36 opposed and three abstentions. However, a so-called “clean slate” law could preclude her from running for office, though not from taking a government position.
“Coup-mongers! History won’t forgive you!” Rousseff’s supporters in the Senate chanted after the second vote. Rousseff was suspended in May after the Senate confirmed a lower-house vote to send her to trial on charges that she broke budget laws. Her former vice president, Michel Temer, took over as interim president and will serve the remainder of Rousseff’s term, which ends in December 2018. Rousseff declared her innocence, denouncing her impeachment as illegal and undemocratic. She was elected to a second term in 2014, but her ratings tumbled amid a recession and a multibillion-dollar corruption scandal at state-controlled oil company Petrobras. Trump crosses the border GOP candidate meets with Mexican president to discuss immigration

MEXICO CITY U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump met with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto Wednesday afternoon, marking Trump’s first formal international trip as the Republican nominee to a country where he is broadly despised for his vilification of illegal immigrants. Addressing the media after the meeting alongside Pena Nieto, Trump said the two discussed trade, illegal immigration and border security — issues where their views do not align. “I was straightforward in presenting my view on the impact of current trade and immigration policies on the Untied States,” said Trump, who spoke second. Trump said they discussed his proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, but did not discuss who would pay for it. Mexico’s president tweeted late Wednesday that he made it clear to Trump at the beginning of their meeting that Mexico would not pay for the wall. Pena Nieto offered a polite rebuke to many of Trump’s signature stances in his remarks. According to an interpreter, he said illegal immigration and border security is a shared challenge, but that undocumented immigration has slowed in recent years. He praised the merits of free trade; Trump has expressed skepticism about sweeping trade deals. “I shared my strong view that
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Donald Trump shake hands at a meeting in Mexico on Wednesday.
NAFTA has been a far greater benefit to Mexico than it has been to the United States,” said Trump. Trump said the meeting was “tremendous” and lasted more than an hour. The two met at Los Pinos, the official presidential residence and office, ahead of a major immigration speech Trump planned to deliver in Phoenix on Wednesday evening, which ended after Express’ deadline. Trump was joined by ex-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., during the meeting, according to a person familiar with the gathering, who was granted anonymity to describe the closed-door talks. Pena Nieto has condemned Trump for repeatedly declaring that Mexico is sending predatory killers and rapists into America,
Backlash in Mexico Mexicans responded angrily to what they saw as a weak performance by President Enrique Pena Nieto, who appeared to let Donald Trump emerge unscathed from a meeting Wednesday. Mexico security analyst Alejandro Hope called the meeting “a disaster.” “Trump didn’t alter his positions one little bit,” Hope said. “He just dressed them up a little in less incendiary language.” Of Pena Nieto, Hope said “in the end, he gave Trump an opportunity to show off, while getting nothing in return.” (AP)
but he is now the target of condemnation at home for extending an invitation to Trump last Friday. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton received an invitation but has not arranged a meeting yet. Speaking in Cincinnati ahead
of the meeting, Clinton went after Trump, saying coalition building and leadership will take more than a “photo op.” Trump’s visit and speech come after Trump has wavered for weeks on whether he will continue to hold his hard-line positions on his call to deport an estimated 11 million immigrants who are living in the United States illegally, a central issue in his campaign. Trump has offered glimpses of his policy priorities while skirting questions about their implementation. He remains publicly committed to building the wall, has extolled the need to crack down on those who overstay their visas and has proposed expanding the E-Verify program, used by employers to determine whether an immigrant is able to work in the country. HITTING A NEW LOW
The proportion of Americans who have an unfavorable opinion of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. The poll marks the worst image Clinton has had in her quarter-century in national public life. The public, however, holds an even worse view of her opponent Donald Trump — 63 percent of Americans view him unfavorably. Yet among registered voters, Clinton’s image is almost as bad as Trump’s: 38 percent have a favorable impression, compared to his 37 percent. A team of doctors was scheduled to operate Wednesday on Paul Mason, who was once the world’s fattest man. At his heaviest, he weighed 981 pounds. After gastric bypass surgery in 2010, he began to lose weight and has lost 658 pounds. His saga attracted a lot of media interest. TLC aired a documentary about him. British newspapers wrote stories about his weight loss and love life. Yet Mason, a retired postal worker from Ipswich, U.K., still feels trapped in his own skin. The excess skin gets infected easily, and its weight has caused tears in his skin. “I’m over the moon really because the more I can get rid of this excess skin, the more I can move on,” Mason said. The New York City surgery was the second pro bono operation on Mason to remove excess skin. The lead surgeons on the operation, who donated their time, called it the most extreme case of body contouring they’ve ever seen. The first surgery took off 60 pounds and 8 feet of spare flesh from Mason’s abdomen and legs. Excessive bleeding and hypothermia are the main concerns surgeons have for Mason, because his blood vessels are much larger than normal because they grew to accommodate his bigger size. Elephant census shows fast decline AFRICA The number of savanna elephants in Africa is rapidly declining and the animals are in danger of being wiped out as international and domestic ivory trades drive poaching across the continent, according to a study released Wednesday. Africa’s savanna elephant population plummeted by about 30 percent — or 144,000 elephants — from 2007 to 2014 and is declining at about 8 percent a year, said Elephants Without Borders, a research organization funded by Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul Allen. “If we can’t save the African elephant, what is the hope of conserving the rest of Africa’s wildlife?” elephant ecologist
Mike Chase, the lead researcher, said in a statement. The aerial survey, which many touted as the largest of its kind, covered 18 countries using dozens of airplanes to fly the equivalent of going to the moon and partway back. The study, known as the Great Elephant Census and involving 90 scientists, estimated a population of 352,271 elephants. Overall, researchers spotted about 12 carcasses for every 100 live elephants, indicating poaching at a high enough level to cause population decline. Results of the study were announced ahead of today’s International Union for the Conservation of Nature World Conservation Congress in Honolulu. CALEB JONES (AP)

Russia’s Defense Ministry, citing “intelligence channels,” claimed Wednesday that it carried out the airstrike near Aleppo, Syria, that killed Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, one of the Islamic State’s most senior leaders. U.S. officials said they had no evidence to back Moscow’s account and were examining whether the militant was hit in an American strike. The Pentagon said it had targeted Adnani in an airstrike in a different location in the Aleppo region. (TWP) POLITICS

THREE POINTERS
Terps linebacker Shane Cockerille didn’t succeed as a quarterback or fullback.
Tackling his transition Terps’ former QB prospect hopes he has found his comfort zone at linebacker MARYLAND Shane Cockerille has never known exactly what to make of his college career, which began in 2013 when he arrived at Maryland as a hotshot quarterback from Baltimore powerhouse Gilman. He was fresh off an appearance in the Elite 11 camp, competing alongside Jared Goff and Christian Hackenberg, and in College Park was seen as the future answer at a vital position. But here Cockerille is three years later, once an ACC quarterback and now a starting linebacker in the Big Ten. “It’s definitely been a crazy whirlwind for me,” said Cockerille, who will be in his new role when the Terrapins play their home opener Saturday against
Howard (noon, BTN). For Cockerille, things never worked out under center. He redshirted his freshman year, and in 2014 played mostly special teams. After that season, thencoach Randy Edsall moved him to fullback. Cockerille had wanted to move to defense that spring, but he accepted his new job. He even returned to his old position late last season, when injuries and poor play dogged the quarterback group. He threw for 82 yards in a blowout home loss to Indiana, a low point in a 3-9 season. Major changes were ahead, including the hiring of DJ Durkin as head coach. A former linebacker himself, Durkin saw potential in Cockerille at “Will”
“His transition was amazing. ... I always thought he would play defense. So when it happened, I was like, ‘Finally.’ ” CAVON WALKER, a junior defensive lineman and former linebacker, on Shane Cockerille’s position switch.
linebacker and moved him there ahead of spring practice. While every Terps player was learning Durkin’s new scheme, which is a 3- 4 base but can stretch into 4-3 looks, Cockerille also had to master his new position.
“On offense, you’re just taking drops and reading the defense ...” he said. “My big concentration over the summer was ... reading the guards, reading the fullbacks on where I need to be.” Cockerille, who is 6-foot-2 and up 15 pounds to 236, is listed as a co-starter alongside junior Jalen Brooks. Both complement junior Jermaine Carter Jr., who is expected to be one of the Big Ten’s best linebackers in 2016, adding speed and athleticism to a unit that defensive coordinator Andy Buh has said will feature “attack principles.” For Cockerille, that’s the kind of mentality he embraces now that he has finally found a position that fits. NFL clears players after PED inquiry NFL James Harrison of the Steelers and Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers of the Packers can start the regular season without the shadow of a league investigation into whether they used performance-enhancing drugs. The NFL cleared all three players Wednesday, saying there was “no credible evidence” they were guilty of any of the claims made in a documentary by AlJazeera America in December. An NFL statement said “the investigation involved witness interviews, a review of relevant records and other materials, electronic research, and laboratory analysis and review.” The league had threatened Harrison, Matthews, Peppers
and free agent Mike Neal with indefinite suspensions if they did not meet with investigators. All of them were mentioned in an Al-Jazeera television interview with Charlie Sly, who worked as an intern at an antiaging clinic. In the report, Sly made claims of PED use by several athletes, including Harrison, Peyton Manning and the three others, but later recanted. Manning was cleared in July. The documentary also named Nationals infielder Ryan Zimmerman. He was exonerated by Major League Baseball. The NFL statement Wednesday did not mention Neal’s status. Vikings’ prospects take a big blow WASHINGTONPOST.COM FANCY STATS
Dallas’ Prescott might do better than you expect With the injury to starting QB Tony Romo, the Cowboys turn to rookie Dak Prescott. He might fare better than you think. Through three preseason games, the fourth-round pick from Mississippi State has surpassed expectations, completing 78 percent of his passes for 454 yards and five TDs. With the Bulldogs, Prescott ran an offense that prepared him well for the Cowboys. In college, he thrived in a spread system with lots of run/pass option elements, but also showed he could execute half-field, NFL-style reads. With the Cowboys already using a number of these concepts with Romo, Prescott operates in a familiar structure. He also benefits from Dallas’ current talent level. The Cowboys return arguably the league’s best starting offensive line while adding Ezekiel Elliott, one of the more talented running backs in recent drafts. Dallas can deploy the threat of Elliott to simplify the defensive looks Prescott sees. Those defenses surely will stack the box with eight or even nine defenders to stop the run, daring Prescott to throw. Ball placement was a weakness for Prescott in college. But if he faces eight-man boxes with single coverage on the outside, his throwing windows will be larger, allowing greater margin for error. His first test will be Sept. 11 at home, against the Giants. MARK
NFL Teddy Bridgewater’s season is over. The Vikings placed their starting quarterback on injured reserve Wednesday, the day after he suffered a dislocated left knee, torn anterior cruciate ligament and other significant damage during a non-contact drill. The Vikings re-signed quarterback Brad Sorensen for depth, the day after he was waived. Veteran reserve Shaun Hill, 36, will be the starter for now.

With Bridgewater lost for the year, they turn, for now, to Shaun Hill
Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered severe left knee damage in a non-contact drill Tuesday.
The Vikings won the NFC North last season and lost to Seattle in the playoffs only because
of a missed field goal. There were hopes for a sustained playoff run this season based on the development of Bridgewater — who was starting his third season — as a complement to tailback Adrian Peterson. In Hill — who played his college ball at Maryland — the Vikings have an experienced alternative at quarterback, but one whose limitations are well documented. His last season as a starter was in 2014 with the Rams. He was 3-5 in eight starts and threw eight touchdown passes with seven interceptions. If the Vikings seek to add a quarterback, the Broncos are
expected to trade or release Mark Sanchez. The Jets’ Geno Smith could be available, and there has been speculation that the 49ers will not retain Colin Kaepernick. The Browns could trade Josh McCown. T.J. Yates, Michael Vick, Austin Davis, Josh Freeman and Tarvaris Jackson are among the quarterbacks who are unsigned and immediately available. The Vikings said Bridgewater did not appear to suffer nerve or arterial damage. He is expected to make a full recovery after a lengthy rehabilitation. The Vikings will open the season Sept. 11 at Tennessee. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

‘You know these people’ John Krasinski insisted on creating a believable family for ‘The Hollars’
KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY FILM RIFFS
Hey, baby!
SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
FILM John Krasinski knew what he was up against with “The Hollars.” “The bad version of this movie, you’ve probably seen a hundred times,” he says. In addition to directing, Krasinski stars as John Hollar, an aimless aspiring artist expecting his first child with girlfriend Rebecca (Anna Kendrick). When his mother, Sally (Margo Martindale), is diagnosed with a brain tumor, John returns to his childhood home and right back into the messy family dynamics he’d sought to escape. So, yes, you’ve probably seen the bad version of this movie a hundred times. “In the [movie] trope of a sick person, the color, the light, everything all comes together to make you feel something, and it’s manipulative,” Krasinski says. “I didn’t want to do that. I wanted you to experience this family almost in a way that you felt you were there, so when the moments hit you, they hit you for real because you know these people.” Creating an honest world for the audience meant creating one for his cast, says Krasinski, who played Jim Halpert on NBC’s “The Office” for nine seasons and made his directorial debut with 2009’s “Brief Interviews With Hideous Men.” Whether he’s acting or directing, he says, his goal is “to find what feels real.”
John Krasinski plays a man dealing with his first child and a sick mother (Margo Martindale) in “The Hollars.”
“To me, going as an actor and trying to figure out what you want to do with a role isn’t much different than inviting all these people [in the cast] down to Jackson, Miss., for six weeks and saying, ‘Oh my God, they’re here only because of you. Don’t screw this up.’” Krasinski’s approach to “The Hollars,” which opens Friday, changed during the six years he was attached to the film, first as an actor, then as director. By the time shooting began, Krasinski’s first daughter was 4 months old and fatherhood had changed his idea of the script, to put it mildly. “It was more of a dramatic about-face. It was a 180-degree difference for me about how I connected to this movie,” Krasinski
says. “I think I idealized what it meant to be a parent. A lot of what I thought was idyllic about it has come true exactly — but you don’t really understand what people are going through until you have a child of your own. Having the responsibility of a child going into this movie was way different than when I was attached as an actor.” The central truth of Jim Strouse’s script is the unsettling adulthood realization that what you think of as “home” is both changeable and permanent. “I love the idea that coming home really is almost like a membrane, that you cross through this barrier back to this thing that was sort of frozen in time,” Krasinski says. “I think you
revert back. I now go to my parents’ house and find myself not swearing. Of course, my parents aren’t enforcing that, but you trigger this old program that hasn’t been running for a while.” “The Hollars” even made Krasinski look at his own family differently. “I come from a very tightknit, loving family, and yet at the end of this movie about a dysfunctional family, I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s my family,’ ” he says. “Whether you love your family, don’t love your family, whether it’s complicated or really easy with your family, there’s something about family that’s inherent in all of us.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

VIOLET CROWN FILMS
indies Landmark E Street Cinema, 555 11th St. NW; opens Fri., $9.50-$12. +arties There’s been a lot of talk about the high cost of college lately. And now, just as college
freshmen have finally figured out that just because you CAN eat Lucky Charms for every meal doesn’t mean you SHOULD, “Starving the Beast” comes along. The documentary examines how a public college degree has moved from something that was largely subsidized and considered necessary for the greater good to a luxury product available only to those who can afford it or want to spend the next 30 years writing checks to Fannie Mae (or avoiding calls from Fannie Mae). They’re not the first characters to discover a surprise bundle of joy. ‘THE JUNGLE BOOK’: In the 1967 cartoon and this year’s remake, wild animals discover a baby and, because Disney made both movies, decide to raise it as their own rather than eating it as a snack. ‘THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN’: Longing for a baby, a
couple bury a box containing all their wishes in the backyard. That night a boy arrives who seems a little odd in that he grows leaves from his ankles. (Oh, like your kid is so perfect.) ‘THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON’: After the
death of his mother, newborn Benjamin is dropped off at an old folks’ home. We can only assume his dad figured, hey, what’s one more person with no teeth? ‘GRAND CANYON’: A woman (Mary McDonnell) goes out for a jog and finds an abandoned baby, becoming the first person to gain 6 pounds, 4 ounces in one exercise session. ‘BABY BOOM’: J.C. (Diane Keaton) doesn’t so much find a baby as have one thrust upon her when a distant relative dies. But how can she balance motherhood AND a career? Good thing this movie was made in 1987 and we don’t have to worry about that conflict anymore.

Sakerum goes south — and way west — of the border FRITZ HAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
BARS Sakerum, which opened last week at 2204 14th St. NW, bills itself as “a new sushi bar, AsianLatin restaurant and cocktail lounge,” with a rooftop patio with a retractable ceiling. This news might get filed under “another new high-concept restaurant on 14th Street” if Sakerum didn’t include a cocktail menu by Gina Chersevani. Chersevani has been one of Washington’s bartending stars for a decade, including a stint at Rasika, where she introduced Indian spices and herbs into mojitos and martinis. If anyone’s going to have fun with a cocktail menu fusing Japanese and Caribbean flavors, it’s going to be her. “I’ve never worked with a sushi chef,” she says. “It’s been an intense learning experience.” Here are three ways to get the most out of a visit to Sakerum.

SAKERUM
Meet the Wandering Samurai
Chersevani will be behind the bar only on Wednesdays, when she’ll be hosting the “Sake Bamba” party. Each week will highlight “different cocktails that may or may not already be on the menu,” she says. There may be special punches, or drinks spiked with small bottles of sake. For example, Chersevani says, “I might have two bottles of a red rice sake. It’s a cool product, but there’s not enough of it to make it work for the menu. There’s enough to do something cool for one night.”
Upgrade a frozen drink Sakerum’s rooftop lounge has a frozen daiquiri machine with two offerings. One is made with 4-year-old Flor de Cana rum, lime and raspberries; the other includes Sailor Jerry rum, grapefruit and cinnamon. Chersevani also came up with a menu of options that allow guests to go upscale: The Sailor Jerry Daiquiri can take a shot of Fernet Francisco, which adds a bitter, herbaceous quality, or be sweetened with a shot of blueberry. The
cross international boundaries, but the showstopper beats them all by combining sushi and tiki. The Wandering Samurai is a large punch bowl filled with white rum, Pure sake, Hamilton 151 rum, bitters and yuzu and pineapple juices. Two bowls of fermented blueberry juice are lit on fire before serving, giving the effect of a volcano bowl. But the garnish is a real attention grabber: six pieces of sashimi selected by the sushi chef. The idea is that the punch, which is fairly acidic, complements the fatty flavors of the fish. In fact, you’re encouraged to dip the fish into the punch before eating, which adds sweet, fruity notes. The bowl costs $50 and is intended for two to four people.
Sakerum’s rooftop lounge, top, features a retractable ceiling so you can enjoy your frozen drink, like the Wandering Samurai, above, in the fresh air.
lime-raspberry daiquiri can be topped with champagne for something lighter and classier. And the two frozen drinks can be swirled together, then mixed with mint and a shot of overproof Hamilton 151 rum, to make a super-boozy mojito. Daiquiris range from $11 to $13 with add-ins. Your frozen drink is served in
a heavy, thistle-shaped copper cup that costs about $30. These are not souvenirs, Chersevani warns. “If [the cups] don’t come back, your card gets charged,” she says. “Don’t stock your dorm room with these.”

Maryland RennFest’s King Henry VIII aims to please his subjects
FESTIVALS Henry VIII ruled England for 38 years. Fred Nelson hasn’t presided over the village of Revel Grove at the Maryland Renaissance Festival for quite that long — this season will be his 15th — but his reign playing King Henry has been long enough that he’s no longer intimidated. “The king is like an old, comfortable pair of shoes,” Nelson says. “Once I get into costume, the character reasserts itself.” Each year at the festival, the Glen Burnie, Md., resident performs in an official manner by acting in half-scripted, half-improvised scenes that follow that year’s storyline. (The festival cycles through various years of Henry VIII’s life, and this year it is 1526. Henry is married to
Katherine of Aragon, but there’s a young lady named Anne Boleyn hanging around.) This year, in recognition of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Nelson will also get to doff the crown and be a part of the festival’s plan to perform at least one scene every day from every one of Shakespeare’s plays, with roles in both “Henry VI, Part I” and “As You Like It.” Much of Nelson’s time each year is spent wandering around, mingling with the lowly 21stcentury visitors. His skills, he says, have had to change during his time on the throne. “Selfies have slowly made their way into our lives,” he says. “The entire cast has all gotten good at standing in for selfies. We have also mastered the art of photobombing — you happen to walk by in the background and stick your face between them and pull a face and ‘Oh my God, we just got photobombed by the king!’ ”
While some things change, others remain the same. “I get a lot of ‘God save the kings!’ ” Nelson says. “I also get the occasional comedian who will say, ‘Hey, it’s good to be the king,’ thinking he’s being original, when I’ve heard it, I’ve heard it, oh God, have I heard it. But you nod politely and you say, ‘You are the funniest person I have ever run into in the history of anything ever.’ ” The king and his court do what they can to keep such annoyances to a minimum. “We have an unwritten rule amongst the cast between late October through next season that nobody says ‘huzzah,’ ” Nelson says. “It’s a lovely word, but we hear it a lot in the course of three months.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS) 1821 Crownsville Road, Annapolis; Saturdays and Sundays (plus Labor Day) through Oct. 23, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., $19-$24.

“I think we’re going to travel, musically, going forward. We named our band ‘airplane,’ so it kind of worked out.”

been into music from all over the world because I tend to like music that isn’t in English. It’s more fun for me to listen to.” Still, he spent much of his time before Khruangbin doing session work and playing in R&B, hiphop and gospel bands. Speer met drummer Donald Johnson when they played together in a gospel group at a church in Texas. Lee, who had been working at a museum, and Speer met in 2007 through a mutual friend. “Someone I was working with lived with Mark so I went to their house on a lunch break and met
Mark,” Lee says. “Mark was watching this documentary on Afghan music and I was like, ‘Who are you? Can we be friends, please?’ ” Speer soon found himself teaching Lee how to play bass. (Lee had previously played piano and guitar.) The pair got a gig backing up DJ act Yppah on tour, and when they came back, “I just looked at Mark and was like, ‘I want to start a band,’ ” Lee says. Through a blog they were obsessed with, Lee and Speer had been downloading and listening to tons of Thai funk together. The
music seeped into what became the Khruangbin sound. “We didn’t have any intention of what we were going to sound like or what kind of band we were going to be,” Lee says. “We just played and when we started to listen back to what we’d recorded, we could hear the influence.” Another major influence: Speer’s family barn in Burton, Texas, which would become their practice and recording space. “It’s the fourth member of the band,” Lee says. “There’s just a certain atmospheric quality it provides. No one else would know except for us, but there’s certain parts of the album where, because of the frequency of the playing, there’s a resonance in the barn where the barn kind of sings.” Khruangbin recently spent some time working on new music in the barn, but Lee and Speer are unsure if they’ll play any of the material live. Most of the band’s songs come out of improvisation, anyway, which suits the live setting. As they embark on a tour that will keep them occupied through October, neither Lee nor Speer has a proper place to call home. “Right now I’m kind of a nomad,” Lee says. “We both are.” Considering where they want to take people with their music, maybe it’s for the best. KHRUANGBIN
MUSIC The Texas-based trio Khruangbin wants to take listeners on a trip around the world. “I think we’re going to travel, musically, going forward,” bassist Laura Lee says. “We named our band ‘airplane,’ so it kind of worked out.” Khruangbin, which translates as “engine fly” (or “airplane”) in Thai, started out playing a style of music heavily influenced by obscure Thai funk from the 1960s. The bulk of the band’s 2015 debut album, “The Universe Smiles Upon You,” owes a great debt to the genre. It’s hypnotic, jazzy and psychedelic — yet unlike anything you’ll hear elsewhere in America. It’s the kind of mostly instrumental, guitarand bass-heavy music that could soundtrack a late-night chill session just as easily as it could a Quentin Tarantino movie. But as Khruangbin begins work on a follow-up album — to be recorded after a U.S. and European tour that kicks off in D.C. on Tuesday — guitarist Mark Speer says the band’s sound is expanding to incorporate influences from across the globe. Middle Eastern music — specifically, Turkish and Iranian soul — has been a big reference point of late. “I think I got on this kick because I was listening to music from west Ireland, which oddly enough has a lot of the same ornamentation as Arabic music,” Speer says. “There’s a lot of these little things that you don’t find in Western European music — you don’t hear these types of trills and ornamentation but you hear it all over really old, traditional Irish music.” A self-professed world music nerd, Speer has “always really

Portraits from the renaissance EXHIBITS One of the few white members of the Harlem Renaissance, Carl Van Vechten chronicled the changing times of the 1920s and ’30s in many ways: as a music and dance critic, as a novelist and later as a portrait photographer. “Photography was a way [for him] to participate in modernist culture while also collecting and cataloguing it,” says John Jacob, curator of “Harlem Heroes: Photographs by Carl Van Vechten,” now on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. As a largely respected supporter of the creativity that fueled the Harlem Renaissance,
Van Vechten had unique access in the following decades to people like Ella Fitzgerald, Jacob Lawrence and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, all of whom appear in “Harlem Heroes,” along with 36 more portraits of the greatest minds of Harlem at the time — many of them Van Vechten’s personal friends. “Although he photographed a cultural elite, his style was natural,” Jacob says. “His portraits are posed but have the familiar quality of a snapshot.” ELENA GOUKASSIAN (FOR EXPRESS)

Bon vivant Carl Van Vechten photographed his good friends — Harlem’s legendary artists
Ethel Waters, 1932 An extremely popular singer and actress, Ethel Waters made more money than any other woman on Broadway at the height of her career. She was the first African-American to perform on the radio, star with an all-white cast on Broadway and perform with white co-stars in the Deep South. Waters, who befriended Van Vechten early in her career, once said he knew “more about Harlem than any other white man except the captain of the Harlem police station.” ON THE COVER

“Bricktop” Smith was a dancer and singer who got her start in Harlem but later moved to Paris, where she owned swanky nightclubs that featured headliners like Ethel Waters and Cole Porter performing for audiences including Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald and Picasso. Van Vechten met Bricktop in her club in Montmartre in the late 1920s. He took this photo of her while the two wandered the streets of Paris.
the Harlem Renaissance (and a graduate of Howard University), Zora Neale Hurston met Van Vechten while working as a secretary in New York. They became such good friends that Hurston once told her employer, “If Carl was a people instead of a person, I could then say, ’These are my people.’ ” This photo was taken two years before Hurston published her best-known novel, “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”
The so-called “poet laureate of Harlem,” Langston Hughes met Van Vechten in 1925 and the two immediately became friends. In fact, Van Vechten was a mentor to Hughes, introducing him to publishers and raving about his unique style of “jazz poetry.” The two wrote hundreds of letters to each other over the years and often traded creative work, and Hughes kept a copy of Van Vechten’s photograph of Ethel Waters pinned up on his wall.

dcimprov.com 202.296.7008 Bessie Smith, 1936
Legendary blues singer Bessie Smith earned more money than any other African-American entertainer in the ’20s, but it wasn’t until Van Vechten wrote an article about her for Vanity Fair in 1926 that her music (and the blues in general) was introduced to white audiences. The notoriously sassy Smith didn’t much care one way or the other; in a letter to Van Vechten, Langston Hughes wrote that Smith’s “only comment on the art of the blues was that they had put her ‘in de money.’ ” This photo was taken a year before Smith died in a car accident.
Nora Holt, 1937
In 1918, musician/composer/music critic Nora Holt became the first African-American in the U.S. to earn a master’s degree in music. Holt often played piano and sang at lavish parties Van Vechten liked to throw in his apartment on West 55th Street — parties known for their Gatsby-like extravagance, talented performers and welcoming atmosphere to black and white guests alike. Although Holt was a serious scholar, she was portrayed as a party girl in the tabloids. (By the time this photo was taken, she had slowed down quite a bit.)
James Weldon Johnson, 1932
Best known for his leadership of the NAACP, James Weldon Johnson was also a novelist and poet who believed that civil rights could be obtained through the production of great African-American art and literature. Johnson and Van Vechten were good friends, and when the latter founded a collection of photographs, letters, literature, music and memorabilia celebrating African-American contributions to the arts at Yale in 1941, he named it the James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection of American Negro Arts and Letters.

On the second leg of his U.S. “The River” tour, Bruce Springsteen is playing some of the longest shows of his career, with sets stretching near the four-hour mark. Unlike January’s show at Verizon Center, Springsteen and the E Street Band won’t play “The River” in full at Nationals Park this week. Instead, he’s mixing the double LP’s songs in with cuts from throughout his career, including the inescapable hits “Born to Run,” “Dancing in the Dark” and “Thunder Road.”
Zac Brown Band, which has been making waves in the country music scene since 2002, hits Jiffy Lube Live this week on the “Black Out the Sun” tour. FRIDAY
Roy Wood Jr. DC Improv, 1140 Connecticut Ave. NW; Fri. & Sat., 7:30 & 9:45 p.m., Sun., 7:30 p.m., $22.
Roy Wood Jr. parlayed a starring role on TBS sitcom “Sullivan and Son” into a correspondent gig on “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.” Wood has arguably been one of the best correspondents to join the show since Jon Stewart left, with a befuddled everyman approach to his “reporting.” This weekend, Wood flexes his stand-up muscles at the DC Improv.
‘Come From Away’ The world stopped on Sept. 11, 2001, and for a small town in Canada, its population got much bigger. “Come From Away,” a new musical premiering in D.C. before Broadway, tells the story of what happened when 38 planes and more than 6,000 passengers were diverted to the small town of Gander on that fateful day. With a folk rock score, “Come From Away” portrays a glimmer of hope in a time of darkness. Ford’s Theatre, 511 10th St. NW; Fri. through Oct. 9, $18-$81.

‘Red: Ming Dynasty/ Mark Rothko‘ What do the Ming Dynasty and artist Mark Rothko have in common? The color red. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is exhibiting a porcelain dish from imperial China and a painting by Rothko that were created more than five centuries apart and that both showcase the immense intensity of red. The exhibit seeks to examine how the color affects the mind and how similar sentiments were captured hundreds of years apart. Arthur M. Sackler Gallery,

The Claypool Lennon Delirium 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW; Thu., 7 p.m., $35.
The Claypool Lennon Delirium is what happens when you mix Primus singer-bassist Les Claypool with The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger singer-guitarist Sean Lennon. Together, the two play up each other’s penchant for prog-rock weirdness on the group’s debut album, “Monolith of Phobos.” In concert, the band pays tribute to its heroes, often covering King Crimson, Pink Floyd and The Beatles. And when Lennon takes a vocal turn on the Fab Four’s “Tomorrow Never Knows,” he sounds uncannily like his dad.
1050 Independence Ave. SW; Sat. through Feb. 20, free.

National Museum of Women in the Arts: “Priya Pereira: Contemporary Artist Books From India,” this exhibition showcases 10 books by Priya Pereira, a book artist based in Mumbai. Trained as a graphic designer and isolated from other book artists, Pereira began creating art books 10 years before she knew that the genre had a name. She has published limited-edition works under the imprint Pixie Bks for the past 22 years, exploring subjects including Indian culture, time and language through creative structures, use of type and hand-drawn images. “Alison Saar in Print,” Saar uses printmaking techniques and hand-wrought woodcuts to explore themes of feminine, racial and cultural identity. 1250 New York Ave. NW; 202783-5000, nmwa.org.
Phillips Collection: “Bettina Pousttchi: Double Monuments,” in her series “Double Monuments for Flavin and Tatlin,” the German-Iranian artist incorporates rails, street barricades and metal crowd barriers into sculptural forms with spiraling vertical towers and neon light tubes. “Karel Appel: A Gesture of Color,” this exhibition of 22 paintings and sculptures revisits Appel’s early interest in children’s art, his stylistic experiments and his highly personal and abstract interpretation of traditional subjects including the nude, the portrait and the urban or rural landscape. “William Merritt Chase: A Modern Master,” this retrospective of Chase’s work includes portraits and figurative paintings, urban park scenes, domestic interiors, still lifes and landscapes. 1600 21st St. NW; 202-3872151, phillipscollection.org. “The very reason I and many other women wear headphones isn’t as a trivial obstacle to some throbbing hormone mountain. ... It’s a defence.” MARTHA MILLS, at theguardian.com,
responds to the unfortunate but very real guide “How to Talk to a Woman Who Is Wearing Headphones,” published on themodernman.com. Mills answers the question with one simple word: Don’t.
“Why did they not call it Strangerer Things?” @PONIEWOZIK, New York Times TV critic, after Netflix announced Wednesday that the popular sci-fi horror series “Stranger Things” will return for a nine-episode Season 2 in 2017. The wildly popular series, which premiered in July, was called a big surprise for the company by Netflix’s chief content officer. The show’s co-creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, told Entertainment Weekly that Season 2 will pick up on the same storyline as Season 1. Netflix also released the titles of all nine episodes, so fans can start taking bets on the plot points.
“What if ... Joanne the Scammer is both a scammer and a messy soothsayer who lives for seeing the future?” KRISTIE ROHWEDDER, at bustle.com,
theorizing about the mysterious website drakeandrihanna.com, which appeared Tuesday, sparking rumors of a collaboration or wedding between Drake and Rihanna. The website turned out to be a hoax from internet character Joanne the Scammer, who later posted a video explanation.
“No woman in a burqa (or a hijab or a burkini) has ever done me any harm. But I was sacked (without explanation) by a man in a suit.” HENRY STEWART, in a letter to the editor published in The Guardian, on the burkini ban controversy in France. France’s highest court overturned a municipal burkini ban last week, but some French mayors have defied the court ruling. Stewart’s comment was widely shared on social media.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your ability to stir up innocent fun can come in handy. Others are more than willing to join in the games you have in mind. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The view from where you are takes in more than you had thought, but you want to be sure you understand more than the big picture. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Search, and you will uncover something that both surprises and satisfies you in ways you had perhaps not expected. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may have to be the one to correct what is wrong because others have not recognized any errors. WEDNESDAY’S SOLUTION
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You’ll have the chance to take a stand, and others will be impressed with your ability to embody both confidence and resolve.
WEDNESDAY’S SOLUTION
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Someone close to you is eager to up the ante. Are you ready to do more, with the promise that more will come your way in return? PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may be tempted to reach out to a friend with whom you are currently on the outs, but the gesture may actually be premature.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’re likely to get most of what you bargained for, but one thing may still be lacking. You can provide that for yourself.
TODAY: Moderate humidity hangs around, even as temperatures come down a bit. The lingering moisture, combined with a cold front coming through, means the continued chance of a morning shower and a few afternoon showers or thunderstorms. The shower and storm threat should diminish by tonight.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) The simple things please you far more than the complex. Don’t be tempted to make a mess of things in the name of experimentation. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can excite a partner with your plans, and inspire him or her to participate in a way that he or she never has before.

In big twist, ABC goes with a white guy
Chris Brown posts bail after arrest After his hours-long standoff with Los Angeles police on Tuesday, singer Chris Brown was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He was released from jail late Tuesday night after posting $250,000 bail, according to L.A. County jail records. The ordeal began early on Tuesday, after model Baylee Curran called 911, saying that Brown pointed a gun at her face. (AP)
ABC has opted to go with a familiar (if blandly attractive) face for its 21st season of the hit reality dating series “The Bachelor,” announcing Monday night that Nick Viall would anchor the upcoming season with his — no kidding — fourth stint on the franchise. Viall, 35, a software sales executive, was runner-up in the 10th and 11th seasons of “The Bachelorette,” where he failed to woo Andi Dorfman and Kaitlyn Bristowe, respectively. He’s also embroiled in a romance with Jen Saviano on the spinoff “Bachelor in Paradise.” People magazine reported that many fans expected that Luke Pell or Chase McNary, former contestants on “The Bachelorette,” would be chosen. “It might have been the best $8K I’ve ever spent.”
Selena Gomez says she’s taking a break to deal with anxiety, panic attacks and depression stemming from her battle with lupus. The pop singer wrote in a statement to People magazine that she wants “to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.” Gomez says that by sharing her struggles, she hopes “others will be encouraged to address their own issues.” (AP)
