‘She was proud to be part of history’
At 99, Ruth Odom Bonner rang in the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
on March 16. She and the four generations of her family reflected “the arc of our progress,” Obama told them that Saturday as they assembled on the stage for the grand opening of the museum. The 500-pound bell had been loaned by the First Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Va., which was founded by slaves and free blacks in 1776.
Bonner “was beaming all day,” her granddaughter, Rukiya Bonner, said Wednesday. “She was the belle of the ball. “She was proud to be part of history. She was thankful that such an institution existed … She felt honored to meet Obama, because she would never think that in her lifetime she would see such a wonderful president who happened to be black.” Bonner was born in 1917 in tiny Biscoe, Ark., one of the eight children of Elijah and Ada Odom. Her father had been born into slavery in 1859 but had gone on to become a physician after the Civil War. She “will be remembered … for her warmth, sacrifice and love,” said the museum’s founding director, Lonnie G. Bunch III. “She will also be remembered for representing generations of African-Americans with honor and dignity. This nation owes Mrs. Ruth Bonner a debt of gratitude.” A memorial service is set for Sept. 9 at Washington’s Nineteenth Street Baptist Church. MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NATIONAL ZOO
THE DISTRICT Ruth Odom Bonner was 99 when she grasped the rope of the old Baptist church bell and started it tolling across the Mall last fall before a gathering of thousands. It was a sublime moment. “Mother Bonner,” as the staff at her assisted living community called her, was the daughter of a man born into slavery and had lived through almost a century of racial oppression and segregation. Now, here she was, ringing the hallowed bell to officially open the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. The graying man who stood behind her steadying her arm was the country’s first black president, Barack Obama. Bonner, who cherished that day, died in her sleep last Friday in a Silver Spring assisted living facility, her son, Michael, said Wednesday. She had turned 100

U.S. tells Russia to close San Francisco consulate Moscow also must close smaller missions in D.C., New York City FOREIGN POLICY In an escalating tit-for-tat, the United States ordered Russia on Thursday to shutter its consulate in San Francisco and scale back its diplomatic presence in Washington and New York, as relations between the two former Cold War foes continued to unravel. The Trump administration said the move constituted its response to the Kremlin’s “unwarranted and detrimental” decision to force the U.S. to cut its diplomatic staff in Russia. But Moscow declared it a major escalation, with a top Russian

lawmaker saying the move heralded “the hot phase of diplomatic war.” The U.S. gave Russia a mere 48 hours to close its San Francisco consulate, along with smaller Russian posts in Washington and New York. In addition to its consulate, the Russians by Saturday must close an official residence in San Francisco. Though Russia can keep its New York consulate and Washington embassy, Russian trade missions housed in satellite offices in those two cities must shut down, said a senior Trump administration official. The U.S. isn’t expelling any Russian officials, so those who work at the shuttered offices can be reassigned elsewhere in the
U.S., the official said. “The United States is prepared to take further action as necessary and as warranted,” said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert. Still, she said the U.S. hoped both countries could now move toward “improved relations.” The closures on both U.S. coasts marked perhaps the most drastic diplomatic measure by the United States against Russia since 1986, near the end of the Cold War, when the nucleararmed powers expelled dozens of each other’s diplomats. U.S. ties to Russia have soured in recent years over deep disagreements about Ukraine, Syria and Russian hacking.
Middle-aged dads are becoming more common, according to a Stanford University study published Wednesday in the journal Human Reproduction. The university’s School of Medicine analyzed nearly 170 million U.S. births from 1972 to 2015 and found that the average age of dads of newborns increased by 3½ years in that time period, from 27.4 years to 30.9 years, USA Today reports. The percentage of babies born to dads over age 40 also grew, from 4.1 percent to 8.9 percent, while for dads over 50, it rose from 0.5 percent to 0.9 percent. (EXPRESS)

Police operate a roadblock after Thursday’s explosions in Crosby, Texas.
Chemicals blow up at crippled plant HARVEY At least 2 tons of highly volatile chemicals exploded and burned at a flood-crippled plant near Houston early Thursday, sending up a plume of acrid smoke and adding a new hazard to Hurricane Harvey’s aftermath. The blaze at the Arkema Inc. chemical plant burned out around midday, but emergency crews held back because of the danger that eight other trailers containing the same compound could blow up, too. The Environmental Protection Agency and local officials said an analysis of the air for toxic materials found no reason for alarm. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries. Dozens of workers were pulled from the Arkema Inc. plant in Crosby, Texas, before the hurricane hit. A crew of 11 that had
been left behind was evacuated before the blasts for fear of just such an incident. Officials had also ordered people living within 1½ miles to leave Tuesday. Officials said the substances that caught fire were organic peroxides, a family of volatile compounds used for making products ranging from pharmaceuticals to construction materials. Authorities urged residents downwind to stay indoors with the windows closed to avoid inhaling the smoke. Arkema had earlier warned that an explosion was imminent at the plant, saying Harvey’s floodwaters had knocked out power and backup generators, disabling the refrigeration needed to keep the organic peroxides stable. The plant is along a stretch that contains one of the nation’s biggest concentrations of refineries and chemical plants. (AP)

A block-by-block search HARVEY Rescuers began a block-by-block search of tens of thousands of Houston homes Thursday, pounding on doors as they looked for anyone — alive or dead — who might have been left behind in Harvey’s fetid floodwaters, which have heavily damaged more than 37,000 homes and destroyed nearly 7,000 across the region. More than 200 firefighters, police officers and members of an urban search and rescue team fanned out across the Meyerland neighborhood for survivors or bodies. They yelled, “Fire department!” as they pounded on doors and checked with neighbors. The streets were dry but heaped with soggy furniture, carpet and wood. “We don’t think we’re going to find any humans, but we’re prepared if we do,” said District Chief James Pennington of the Houston Fire Department. The confirmed death toll stood at 31, though it is expected to rise. By midday, the temporary command center had received no reports of more bodies from the searches, which are expected to take up to two weeks. Unlike during Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath in New Orleans, crews used GPS devices to log
the homes they checked, rather than spray-painting neon X’s on the homes, which also avoids alerting thieves to vacant homes. The latest regionwide damage surveys revealed the staggering extent of the destruction. The figures from the Texas Department of Public Safety did not include the tens of thousands of homes with minor damage. Rescues continued, as did the search for shelter by people left homeless after the storm. Emergency officials reported 32,000 people in shelters. The Harris County FEMA director said the agency was looking at how to house people who have lost their homes to Harvey. The priority is to get them into some form of temporary housing, with hotels being an option. “Right now, nothing is off the table,” Tom Fargione said Thursday. “This is a tremendous disaster in terms of size and scope. I want to get thinking beyond traditional methodologies you’ve seen in the past.” As the water receded in Houston, the threat of major damage from the storm shifted to near the Texas-Louisiana state line. Beaumont, Texas, with a population of nearly 120,000, lost water service after its main pump station was overwhelmed by

the swollen Neches River. That forced Baptist Beaumont Hospital to move patients to other facilities. A stream of ambulances and helicopters arrived at the hospital to pick up the patients,
some of whom already had been moved from flooded nursing homes. The city’s second hospital, Christus St. Elizabeth, said it was using stored water and accepting only critical patients. Economists said the storm shut down everything from plastics plants to oil refineries to the Houston port — the second-busiest in the nation — which could affect the nation’s economy. Macroeconomic Advisers, a forecasting firm, calculates that the economic damage could shave between 0.3 and 1.2 percentage points off the nation’s economic growth in the July-toSeptember quarter. The economy had been expected to grow at an annual rate of about 3 percent from July through September. Although it has been downgraded to a tropical depression, Harvey was still expected to dump heavy rain on parts of Louisiana, Tennessee and Kentucky through Friday. Forecast totals ranged from 4 to 8 inches, with some places getting up to a foot. For much of the Houston area, the rain had passed. But with temperatures likely to climb this weekend, residents were warned about the dangers of heat exhaustion, especially for people who lost power or must toil outdoors. Texas endures 1-in-1,000-year flood event The data on Hurricane Harvey’s rains are bearing out what many people suspected: This flood event is on an entirely different scale than what we’ve seen before in the United States. A new analysis from the University of Wisconsin’s Space Science and Engineering Center has determined that Harvey is a 1-in-1,000-year flood event that has overwhelmed an enormous section of southeast Texas equivalent in size to New Jersey. There is nothing in the historical record that rivals this, said Shane Hubbard, the Wisconsin researcher who made and mapped this calculation. “In looking at many of these events [in the United States], this is something that hasn’t happened in our modern era of observations,” he said. Hubbard made additional calculations that emphasize the massive scale of the disaster: At least 20 inches of rain fell over an area larger than 10 states, including West Virginia and Maryland (by a factor of more than two), and at least 30 inches of rain fell over an area equivalent to Maryland’s size. A 1,000-year flood event, as its names implies, is exceptionally rare. It signifies a 0.1 percent chance of such an event happening in any given year. “Or, a better way to think about it is that 99.9 percent of the time, such an event will never happen,” Hubbard said. Wells Fargo scandal grows Further review shows that bank faked 3.5M accounts, up from 2.1M BUSINESS The scope of Wells Fargo’s fakeaccounts scandal grew significantly Thursday, with the bank now saying that 3.5 million accounts were potentially opened without customers’ permission from 2009 to 2016. That’s up from 2.1 million accounts that the bank had cited in September 2016, when it acknowledged that employees under pressure to meet aggressive sales targets had opened accounts that customers might not have even been aware existed. kinds of accounts in their names, so the number of customers affected may differ from the account total. Wells Fargo said Thursday that about half a million of the newly discovered accounts were missed during the original review, which covered 2011 to 2015. After Wells Fargo acknowledged the fake accounts last year, evidence quickly appeared that problems with sales practices dated back even further. So Wells Fargo hired an outside consulting firm to analyze 165 million retail bank accounts opened between 2009 and 2016. The scandal was the biggest in Wells Fargo’s history. It cost then-CEO John Stumpf his job, and the bank’s once-sterling

industry reputation was in tatters. The company paid $185 million to regulators and settled a class-action suit for $142 million.
New managers have been trying to make amends, but it’s been tough, as revelations keep coming. Wells Fargo said last month that roughly 570,000 customers were signed up for and billed for car insurance that they didn’t need or necessarily know about. Many couldn’t afford the extra costs and fell behind in their payments, and in about 20,000 cases, cars were repossessed. Other customers have filed lawsuits against Wells Fargo saying they were victims of unfair overdraft practices. Wells Fargo is also still under several investigations for its sales practices, including a congressional inquiry and one by the Justice Department.

The Trump administration on Thursday announced it has chosen four companies to build concrete prototypes of the president’s much-touted border wall. Construction of the prototypes, to take place in San Diego, is the first step in fulfilling Trump’s campaign promise of building a “big, beautiful” wall stretching along the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border. But there appears to be a lack of political will to fund a continuous barrier. Congress has set aside $20 million in the current budget to build the prototypes but has not appropriated any other money for the wall. The four companies are Caddell Construction in Montgomery, Ala.; Fisher Sand & Gravel/DBA Fisher Industries in Tempe, Ariz.; Texas Sterling Construction in Houston; and W.G. Yates & Sons Construction in Philadelphia, Miss. The administration was originally expected to announce its decision on prototypes in June, but the contracting process was delayed after protests from two companies that had not made the list of finalists. The Government Accountability Office dismissed the protests last Friday, but unsuccessful bidders now have another opportunity to file new protests, which could further delay construction. TRACY JAN

Lessons from August It hasn’t been the most productive preseason for the Redskins. Washington lost two potential playmakers on defense in outside linebacker Trent Murphy (torn ACL) and nose tackle Phil Taylor (torn quadriceps). Pessimism is in order
The Redskins figured they could replace 1,000-yard receivers Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson with free agent Terrelle Pryor Sr. and a healthy Josh Doctson. But Pryor spent the preseason failing to find his rhythm in the offense, and Doctson is nursing a minor hamstring injury. Quarterback Kirk Cousins has taken the blame for Pryor’s struggles, but that’s just diplomacy. Washington hopes Pryor and Doctson can own corners of the end zone on the fade routes that were ineffective with Garcon and Jackson, but the tall newcomers haven’t looked like capable replacements.
If there was anything the Redskins took for granted entering camp, it was a solid offensive line. Instead, only right tackle Morgan Moses has played consistently well. Defenders have slipped past Pro Bowl right guard Brandon Scherff and left guard Shawn Lauvao, while Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams has sometimes struggled on the edge. Center Spencer Long is out as he recovers from arthroscopic knee surgery, but backup Chase Roullier, a rookie, was solid in his preseason start. Maybe this unit just needs the Eagles to jolt it back into form in the season opener Sept. 10.
Any thoughts of making free agent Zach Brown a backup were quickly dispatched when the 2016 Pro Bowler proved to be the team’s best defender in the preseason. Brown’s sideline-to-sideline play is reminiscent of Wilber Marshall, a big piece of the Redskins’ Super Bowl season in 1991 who was named All-Pro in 1992. Between Brown, Mason Foster and Will Compton, the inside linebackers should seal gaps that have plagued the team for years. Outside linebacker Junior Galette finally made it onto the field after two years of injuries. He and Ryan Kerrigan might just combine for 20 sacks.
Eight of 10 draft picks may contribute this season, an unusually hefty number. First-round defensive end Jonathan Allen, powerful running back Samaje Perine and cornerback Joshua Holsey should get significant snaps, while center Chase Roullier and defensive backs Fabian Moreau and Montae Nicholson will see time as well. Second-round linebacker Ryan Anderson has been troubled by a neck and shoulder injury, and his timetable to return is uncertain. Jeremy Sprinkle is stuck as the fourth tight end for now. As a whole, the draft haul could produce playoff berths down the line.
Right now, the Redskins have the look of a 6-10 team. After two seasons just over .500, the defense is a little better and deeper, but the loss of nose tackle Phil Taylor denies the unit the tip of the spear. While he gets used to his new targets, quarterback Kirk Cousins could struggle in the mid-range game. And if coaches think Rob Kelley is a 1,000-yard running back, they’re fooling themselves. Throw in three West Coast trips — two to Los Angeles to face the Rams and Chargers and one to Seattle — and games against improving NFC East and harsh AFC West foes, and Washington faces a difficult road.
The Redskins’ preseason finale at Tampa Bay ended after Express’ deadline Thursday
The blockbuster trade, delayed and in jeopardy, is done: The Cavaliers are sending Kyrie Irving, below, to the Celtics, and Isaiah Thomas is coming to Cleveland. Concerned with medical findings after looking at Thomas’ injured right hip, the Cavs negotiated another draft pick from Boston to complete the mega-deal that stalled, the teams announced early Thursday. Boston and Cleveland had until 10 a.m. Thursday to agree on a trade, which was prompted by Irving’s demand in July to be dealt. The original deal included the Celtics sending forward Jae Crowder, center Ante Zizic and an unconditional, 2018 first-round pick. Now Cleveland also will receive a second-round pick in 2020. (AP)

Pigrome’s point to prove Terps’ sophomore QB wants to show he’s not just a running threat

Maryland 2016 record: 6-7, lost to Boston College in the Quick Lane Bowl STORYLINE: Coach DJ Durkin enters his second season after an impressive debut, but it will be tough to improve upon last year with a Big Ten schedule that includes four of the top 11 teams in the preseason AP Top 25.
After an offseason to study the scheme, Tyrrell Pigrome expects to be a more efficient passer.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Senior linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. of Fort Washington, Md., was second on the team with six sacks last year and led the Terps in tackles the past two years. KEY GAME: Sept. 30 at Minnesota
JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
COLLEGE FOOTBALL Maryland’s Tyrrell Pigrome hounded his wide receivers at all hours this summer, sometimes texting early in the morning after a workout or at midnight. “Let’s go and throw,” the sophomore quarterback would text. Pigrome might have been the favorite to win the starting job during the offseason, but if those impromptu throwing sessions proved anything, it was that the Alabama native knew he needed to improve to earn the keys to coordinator Walt Bell’s offense. A year ago, Pigrome wasn’t ready to handle the up-tempo system. The speed of the game forced him to survive on his running ability. So on Wednesday, less than 48 hours after coach DJ Durkin announced he would start Saturday against No. 23 Texas, Pigrome spoke about his largely untapped potential as a passer. “I never had my feet in the right position to play, or ready to throw the ball,” he said of 2016. “I would always just throw the ball inaccurate and short.” Pigrome completed just 52 percent of his passes last year for 322 yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions. His first career start, in a 31-10 loss to Minnesota, illustrated his struggles. Pigrome completed just 18 of 37 passes for 161 yards

and committed three turnovers. He had 25 carries, but Bell admitted that only about five of those were designed runs. Although Pigrome had shown special athleticism — including on a 25-yard, game-winning touchdown run in double overtime against Central Florida — he played out the season mostly in mop-up duty or in special packages, knowing he’d need the entire offseason to develop as a passer in a complex system. Maryland played four quarterbacks last year, but Bell insisted Pigrome won’t have to look over

Navy’s shoes pose atypical risk of injury
MLB
Angels add Justin Upton in trade with Tigers The Angels acquired four-time All-Star outfielder Justin Upton from the Tigers on Thursday, giving up pitching prospect Grayson Long and cash or a player to be named. Los Angeles also allowed Cameron Maybin to leave on a waiver claim by the Astros, clearing the way for Upton to take over in left field. Upton, 30, is batting .279 with 28 homers and 94 RBIs this year. He represents an immediate upgrade in left field for the Angels (69-65), who are 1.5 games out of a playoff spot. The Twins (70-63) lead the congested race for the second AL wild card. (AP)
COLLEGE FOOTBALL It took three straight losses — including, most painfully, to Army — for Navy’s football coaches to start talking about their players’ shoes. Their team had fallen to its archrival in December for the first time in 15 years. A litany of players missed the game because of foot injuries, most notably quarterback Will Worth, slotback Toneo Gulley, linebacker Daniel Gonzales and wide receiver Tyler Carmona. Slotback Josh Brown sat out with a sprained ankle. Several weeks later, after a 9-2 start to the season dissolved into a 9-5 finish, coach Ken Niumatalolo and his staff began evaluating what had gone wrong. Their conclusion: a potential injury risk that almost no other team in major college football has to consider. Unless the Midshipmen are participating in athletic activities or are in their dorm rooms, they are forbidden by U.S. Naval Academy rules from wearing sneakers or flip-flops. For them and the rest of their classmates, hard-soled Oxfords shined to
Navy specifications, paired with a uniform of service whites or dress blues, are required. And they get one pair of shoes, issued when they’re plebes, that they typically wear for four years. The stress on a pair of shoes used for roughly 10 hours each day frequently leads to considerable wear on the heel, sole or both. That deterioration in turn can lead to supination in the foot, according to Jim Berry, Navy’s assistant athletic director for sports medicine. Before the start of his 10th full season at Navy, Niumatalolo mandated his players have their shoes cobbled if they discovered noticeable wear. Midshipmen have access to a cobbler shop in Bancroft Hall, and many players had their uniform shoes repaired. A team of specialists from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda went to campus to analyze players’ feet. Players deemed at a higher risk for foot or ankle injuries were fitted for orthotics. Navy has not uncovered a definitive link between well-worn dress shoes and foot injuries, but
Senior slotback Josh Brown sat out against archrival Army last year with a sprained ankle.

Hard-soled Oxfords worn 10 hours a day put unique stress on the feet of cadets
some data suggest a correlation, according Thomas Sanders, a Falls Church-based sports orthopedist who specializes in foot and ankle injuries. “Stress fractures would absolutely be created in that setting because dress shoes tend to be tighter,” Sanders said. “They tend to not have as much support, especially if you’re doing a lot of standing.” In addition to new guidelines for dress shoes, “foot activation stations” were added to the locker room for warmups players must perform before getting taped up. ALABAMA ASSISTANT’S SALARY
The amount that Alabama co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi, left, will make this year, which makes him one of four coaches on the Crimson Tide football team who will bring in more than the university president, Stuart Bell ($755,000). In January, Michigan became the first football team at a public college with three assistants making $1 million or more. If Lupoi gets a bonus, Alabama will likely be next. (TWP)

Lakers fined $500,000 in Paul George tampering New Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka’s contact with Paul George’s agent violated the NBA’s anti-tampering rule and resulted in a $500,000 fine for Los Angeles on Thursday. The league said a law firm’s independent investigation didn’t find evidence of an agreement or an understanding that the Lakers would sign or acquire George, who was with the Indiana Pacers at the time. George later was traded to Oklahoma City. The league had warned the Lakers about tampering following comments by president Magic Johnson about George on national TV on April 20. (AP) NFL
Arbitrator to rule soon on Ezekiel Elliott’s appeal Ezekiel Elliott’s hearing on the appeal of his six-game suspension over a domestic violence case ended Thursday after more than two days. Arbitrator Harold Henderson must rule on the NFL’s punishment for the Cowboys’ star running back “as soon as practicable.” Dallas must cut its roster to 53 players by Saturday but could save a spot by placing Elliott on the restricted list. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
Wising up: Our brains didn’t get the summer off Ugh, Minions, must you screw up everything? Now that summer is unofficially over and the autumn movie slump is upon us, it’s a good time to take a look back and see what the blockbuster season was like, because otherwise some people wouldn’t have anything to write about. Summer has often gotten a bad rap when it comes to movie quality: “blockbuster” and “tentpole” have become sneering value judgments rather than simple descriptors. So it was a pleasant surprise to look back and realize that most of this summer’s top-grossing movies were, of all things,
smart. Out of the top five, four of them — “Wonder Woman,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Dunkirk” — were great, and the first three weren’t just great superhero movies, they were great overall. (“Despicable Me 3” snuck in at No. 4, I’m assuming because sometimes you just need to throw the school-less kids in some air conditioning, both to prevent heatstroke and to stop them from taking annoying to new and dangerous levels.) As you go further down the list, the trend continues with more high-quality hits. “War for the Planet of the Apes” came in at 8; “Girls Trip” was 10. “Baby Driver” was 11.
“Atomic Blonde” kick-punched its way to 19. And “The Big Sick,” a sharp, sweet indie rom-com that cost a reported $5 million to make, came in 25th, with an absolutely staggering take of over $39 million in domestic sales alone. In contrast, “Wonder Woman,” the summer’s box office champ, pulled in less than three times its $150 million budget domestically. There were stinkers among the top grossers, of course (people, please stop seeing “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies; it’s the only way they’ll stop making them). But this summer was, by and large, a smart season. In comparison, last summer’s top 10 had the very good “Finding Dory” and “Captain America: Civil War” at 1 and 2, but the quality dropped off fast after that with “The Secret Life of Pets,” “Suicide Squad” and “Jason Bourne” rounding out the top five. Summer used to be easy for studios: They assumed people were looking for big, dumb fun. Maybe some aliens, some explosions, a little PG-13 nudity
LCD Soundsystem releases “pulse (v. 1),” a song not included on new album “American Dream”
and watch the money roll in. That is, thankfully, no longer true. Part of it is that with so many more movie-watching options available, people aren’t going to leave the house to pay $12 to see something trite and loud. I think, though, that audiences have largely become more discerning — and less forgiving. As the quality of blockbusters has increased, audiences have became less willing to overlook shabbiness because something is “just an action movie” or “just a superhero movie.” Spandex used to cover a multitude of writing, acting and directing sins, and that’s no longer the case. It is a chicken-and-egg situation: Are studios making better big-budget movies because audiences expect them, or do audiences expect better big-budget movies because the studios started making them? However it began, let’s hope it continues. Just because school is out, it doesn’t mean audiences need to leave their brains at the multiplex door. Lake Bell directs and stars in “I Do … Until I Don’t,” a comedy about a cynical British documentarian (Dolly Wells) who travels to Florida to observe three married couples, hoping to prove her theory that monogamy is not a sustainable concept. It has some hilarious moments, but those bits of brilliance don’t last. The story often feels like a collection of so-so jokes strung together in a tenuous narrative. ‘Polina’ Unrated, 112 min.
In “Polina,” adapted from Bastien Vives’ 2011 graphic novel, a Russian ballerina follows her boyfriend to France, where she discovers the art of modern dance. This movie is a pretty little fairy tale about what it means to be more than pretty. If it suffers from anything, it’s that, in delivering its message, it’s almost too gorgeous for its own good. FILM REVIEW In “Marjorie Prime,” actress Lois Smith plays Marjorie Lancaster, a woman suffering from dementia in the wake of her husband’s death. Still living in the couple’s attractively appointed seaside home — with her daughter Tess and son-in-law, Jon (Geena Davis and Tim Robbins) — Marjorie avails herself of all the interventions at her disposal, including medication, an occasional illicit cigarette with her nurse, and conversations with the departed Walter, whom she chooses to remember as a much younger man. Because “Marjorie Prime” takes place in the not-too-distant future, Walter isn’t just a figment of her imagination: He’s a hologram — played by Jon Hamm with spot-on ethereality — that is continually being upgraded by the stories, anecdotes and snippets of information fed to him by Marjorie, Tess and Jon. As the drama assumes its modest but nuanced and enigmatic shape, it becomes clear that the question isn’t just how real Walter is, but how memories are elicited, edited and erased to become an individual’s personal history. Adapted by writer-director Michael Almereyda from Jordan Harrison’s play, “Marjorie Prime” has the sleek, self-assured lines of similarly themed recent films, most notably “Her” and “Ex
Wouldn’t it be nice if a hologram version of Jon Hamm could keep all of us company in our darkest hours?
Machina.” Like those speculative but eerily believable fictions, the futurism here is subtly understated. Shot in serene, silvery tones by Sean Price Williams (who gave “Good Time” its lurid, frenetic, neon buzz), “Marjorie Prime” succeeds in lulling the viewer into the title character’s own sense of reassurance when the story takes its surprising turns, and the core concerns of the film — memory, the construction of identity and character, and the profound inscrutability of the Other — come into quiet but deeply affecting focus. Anchored by a breakout performance by Smith — who played Marjorie in the 2014 Los Angeles stage production and a New York version the following year
‘Marjorie Prime’ (Unrated, 98 min.) DIRECTOR: Michael Almereyda STARS: Jon Hamm, Lois Smith Geena Davis, Tim Robbins IN A NUTSHELL: An older woman living with dementia uses a holographic version of her late husband to recount her memories.
— “Marjorie Prime” receives a welcome shot of humor from Robbins, who imbues Jon with mordant, borderline angry wit. Davis’ turn as an unhappy adult child feels more stiff, but as the unspoken mysteries of the Lancaster family are gradually revealed, her reticence turns out
to be a judicious and justifiable choice. Like “Dunkirk” and “A Ghost Story,” which came out this summer, “Marjorie Prime” is about our relationship with time, especially the fractured way we reconstruct the past. Although not nearly as visually imaginative as those films, this talkier, more muted meditation offers its own intriguing insights into the illusions we create in the name of seeing ourselves and one another more clearly. “Marjorie Prime” doesn’t disappoint, with some mysteries being solved and others remaining tantalizingly elusive. Viewers are left with the Faulknerian sense that, one day, the past won’t just be alive — it won’t even be past at all. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
BENEFITS
Artists to donate concert proceeds to hurricane victims Houston native Solange, left, has announced a benefit concert on Sept. 28 in Boston, in which all earnings will go toward those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The singer also said she’ll give $3 from each ticket to her Oct. 3 show in New York City to Harvey relief. In addition, rock band Fall Out Boy said all proceeds from a Nov. 7 concert in Houston would be donated to Harvey victims. FILM REVIEW Lakeith Stanfield delivers a breakout performance in “Crown Heights,” a dramatized true story of miscarried justice that he anchors with restrained stillness and sensitivity. In 1980, Colin Warner, a Trinidad native living in Brooklyn, was accused of murder, identified by two teenagers who were later found to have been manipulated by the police. After being wrongfully convicted and serving more than 20 years in prison, Warner was released, thanks to the tireless efforts of his best friend, Carl “KC” King. As compelling as Warner’s story is, however, “Crown Heights” never quite takes hold cinematically. It’s a procedural whose protagonist remains passive and something of a cipher, despite the wellsprings of emotion that Stanfield taps into. It might be one of those stories that would have been better as a densely layered serial drama like “The Night Of,” not a film. Accenting the narrative with video montages of cultural and political changes over the subsequent two decades of Warner’s incarceration, writerdirector Matt Ruskin points up the law-and-order policies that came into vogue during the era. To those who have seen Ava DuVernay’s illuminating, infuriating documentary “13th,” about the racist roots of mass incarceration, this Kafkaesque slice of that history will ring disquietingly true. ‘Killing Gunther’
‘Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House’
EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 20 (limited)
EXPECTED RELEASE: Sept. 29
SUMMARY: Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as the world’s most talented hit man; many other people are trying to hit the hit man. It’s an action-comedy with lots of quips and explosions, plus it looks like a spin on a reality show. So there’s a lot of looking into the camera, like if Jim from “The Office” could kill you in many creative ways. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: Liam Neeson stars in the fact-based story of “Deep Throat,” the FBI informant who, when faced with a corrupt president trying to avoid an investigation, went to one of the only places that could help: a scrappy, small-town newspaper called The Washington Post. K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Dirt on the split we don’t care about In an interview on Sophia Amoruso’s “Girlboss Radio” podcast, Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that she’s failed in “so many” romantic relationships. “I am at my potentially most vulnerable and f---ed up in the romantic slice of the pie,” Paltrow said. Amoruso joked that the actress was specifically referring to her ex, Brad Pitt. Paltrow chimed in, “I f---ed that up, Brad.”

Judge might dismiss Simmons’ lawsuit Los Angeles judge Gregory Keosian on Wednesday suggested he would dismiss Richard Simmons’ lawsuit against the National Enquirer. Simmons claimed that the Enquirer’s 2016 stories that he is transgender were defamatory and false. According to Variety, Keosian wrote that while the trans community may experience discrimination, “the court will not validate those prejudices by legally recognizing them.” (EXPRESS)

Kim Kardashian West shared her first public thoughts on President Trump with Harper’s Bazaar Arabia — the reality star’s second magazine cover released this week. “Anyone can run the U.S. better,” Kardashian West said. “My daughter [North West] would be better. … When you did feel safe at home, now with Trump in presidency, you just don’t feel safe anymore.” She also said her comments last year about not being a feminist were taken out of context. “To clarify what I said before: I feel in my soul I’m a feminist. I just don’t need labels to make me feel or know what I am inside. Modern feminists are all the girls around us today. Every time you look on social media and there’s someone standing up for themselves, to me that’s a modern feminist.” (EXPRESS)
