Democrats: Stop Caving, Obama President’s decision to move jobs speech rankles his own party

'$)J

MANDEL NGAN/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

The tiff over the timing of President Obama’s jobs speech to Congress offers little hope that Republicans and the White House will now find common ground on how to reduce the nation’s painfully high unemployment level. In fact, some Democrats say it’s time Obama stopped trying so hard to negotiate. On matters large and small, Obama has yielded to House Speaker John Boehner in a string of concessions that have unnerved Democrats and emboldened Republicans. A chorus of Democratic voices is now demanding that the president abandon his attempts at being a compromiser and instead lay out an ideological vision that distinguishes him from Republicans and becomes a template for his re-election. Obama had asked Congress to convene a joint session next Wednesday so he could announce his jobs agenda. Boehner objected, telling

Many Democrats think President Obama caved when he agreed to move the date of his speech to Congress after House Speaker John Boehner requested the change.

H[fehj0 ;Yedeco 8[jj[h J^Wd ;nf[Yj[Z U.S. consumers and businesses are not so worried that the economy is about to tumble into a recession after all. Manufacturing grew a little slower in August than in July, but it didn’t contract as some had feared. Shoppers spent more during the crucial back-to-school season. And fewer people applied for unemployment benefits last week, a sign that layoffs have slowed. Thursday’s reports hardly suggest the economy is strong and mostly points to weak growth. But the data were better than most economists had expected. And after a month in which stocks plunged and many feared another downturn was looming, even marginally positive news was a welcome sign. the president it would be better if he came the next night. Republicans were irritated that Obama wanted to speak at the same time GOP presidential candidates would be debating in California — and sharing TV time with him. In the end, Obama accepted Boehner’s invitation to speak at 7 p.m. EDT next Thursday, early enough to avoid yet another conflict — with the opening game of the National Football League season. Obama must create a clear contrast between what he wants and what the Republicans want, Simon Rosenberg, president of the liberal-leaning think tank NDN, wrote. “If the president is to win the election next year, he will have to first win the economic debate with the Republicans, something, to date, he has not done.” JIM KUHNHENN (AP)

THINK INSIDE THE BOX

Cold showers. Meals in the dark. Refrigerators full of spoiled food. No TV. No Internet. Up and down the East Coast, patience is wearing thin among the millions of people still waiting for electricity after Hurricane Irene knocked out the power last weekend. “It ’s like ‘Little House on the Prairie’ times,” said Debbie McWeeney, who went to a Red Cross shelter in Warwick, R.I., to pick up food and water after everything in her refrigerator went bad. “Except I’m not enjoying it at all.” With the waters receding across much of the flood-stricken region, homeowners are mucking out their basements and dragging soggy furniture to the curb. But the wait for power drags on, with an estimated 1.38 million homes and businesses still without electricity, down from a peak of 9.6 million.

Criticism of the utility companies is mounting. In Rhode Island, a state senator is calling for an investigation, and Massachusetts’ attorney general is demanding information from utilities on how they are dealing with the crisis. Tripoli Arrests Marred by Doubts

Makeshift jails hold hundreds accused of fighting for Gadhafi

Rebel forces and civilians are rounding up thousands of black Libyans and migrants from subSahara Africa, accusing them of fighting for ousted dictator Moammar Gadhafi and holding them in makeshift jails in Tripoli. Virtually all of the detainees say they are innocent migrant workers, and in most cases there is no evidence that they are lying. But that is not stopping the rebels from placing the men in such facilities as the Gate of the Sea sports club, where about 200 detainees — all black — clustered on a soccer field this week, bunching against a high wall to avoid the scorching sun. Handling the prisoners is one of the first major tests for the rebel leaders, who are scrambling to set up a government that they promise will respect human rights, unlike the dictatorship they overthrew. There has been little credible evidence of rebels killing or system-

A rebel military spokesman said Thursday that Moammar Gadhafi loyalists in Sirte, Libya, would have until Sept. 10 to lay down their weapons, rather than Saturday. He said that in extending the deadline, rebels want to give residents time to understand the new reality in Libya. But Mustafa Sagazly, the rebels’ deputy interior minister, said he was not informed of any such extension. He said the rebels need time to reorganize before beginning an attack on Sirte, which could come as early as Saturday. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

U.S.: Libya Must Deal With Lockerbie Bomber

Witnesses have described scores of mercenaries flown in to halt the rebellion. As a result, people with roots in sub-Saharan Africa and black Libyans have been targeted by rebels in the fight for Libya. Ibrahim al-Rais, a 60-year-old fisherman, is the prison director at the Gate of the Sea. He admitted that many detainees were likely innocent, but he insisted a “big percentage” were mercenaries. “These people were fighting against our people,” he said. (AP)

I like to say Metro has mood lighting. Laura Soskey, 23, puts it a different way: “It’s eerily dark, but mostly it’s depressing.” But it seems Metro has finally seen the light — and now riders are starting to also. I met Soskey beneath the glow of four super-bright orbs attached to the top of a pylon in the Friendship Heights station.

cell phones to look up. Not everyone was clueless. A few folks had been wondering about the recent appearance of such an odd fixture. “I’m curious why it’s so close to the escalator,” says Megan McKinney, 27. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel

has a simple explanation. When escalators are rehabbed, they must be recertified before they can be put back into use. “It wouldn’t pass the recertification process until the lighting near there was brighter,” he says. (Something about a certain number of lumens required to see whether you’re going to trip.) So, since Metro is as bright as a smoky s p e a k e a s y, t he y needed to put something bold in ASAP. They’ve installed another at Bethesda, and Tenleytown’s next. “It’s still a pilot program,” says Stessel, who emphasizes that these lights are about safety (“our No. 1 priority”) rather than aesthetics. Maybe that will appease the pickiest commenters on DCist. com, one of who deemed the orbs overly “harsh” in a recent posting. Looks do matter, however, which is why WMATA plans to lighten platforms with brighter bulbs and some sprucing up. “In some stations, it’s just a matter of cleaning the brake dust that’s built up over the lights,” Stessel says. Another initiative that should help: power-washing the walls. Dingy gray surfaces can’t reflect light the way shiny white ones can. As Metro matters go, lighting might not be the most critical. “I’d be happier if they spent the money on rail lines,” McKinney says. But a few thousand dollars for some orbs and cleaning doesn’t seem like a waste to me. As long as we’re going to be waiting for trains, it’s nice to be able to see.

A new study is adding a less-thanpositive superlative to the region’s roster: America’s worst drivers hail from the DMV. The seventh annual “America’s Best Drivers Report” by Allstate named drivers in the D.C. region

the absolute worst in the country, behind those in 199 of the nation’s largest cities. This is Washington’s third-straight year coming in last place, behind Baltimore, Los Angeles and Newark. Given the state of D.C.-area traffic — conditions that a national traffic survey called the worst congestion

in the nation and that a Washington Post poll showed pushes more than a third of drivers to “wild rage” — the Allstate study isn’t a surprise. The report says that D.C. drivers are the worst when it comes to avoiding accidents, averaging one accident approximately every five years. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

That’s up 11.4 percent from the 414,785 cases sold in fiscal 2010. The state collected almost $1.8 million in wine liter tax revenue, up from about $1.6 million in fiscal 2010. Cathedral Installs Safety Nets Equipment designed to trap falling debris after quake damage MWi^_d]jed Workers at the National Cathedral on Thursday hung heavy-duty black netting across the ceiling of the massive nave where thousands are scheduled to gather for Sept. 11 anniversary events, an effort to protect people from any mortar chips that might fall from the earthquake-damaged building. Also Thursday, the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington announced that it would donate $25,000 to the cathedral, which is the seat of the country’s Episcopal Church but is often used as an interfaith gathering place for major events. Cathedral officials have said it will take millions of fundraised dollars to repair the British Gothic-style building, primarily consisting of exterior damage, including cracked spires and angels and other limestone decorative elements. The nave, or inside worship space, had

no major damage but some thumbnail-sized pieces of mortar have been found on the floor, said head mason Joe Alonso. While the cathedral hosts highprofile events such as some presidential funerals, its actual congregation is less than 1,000 people. The institution has also just been through a period of budget-cutting after its endowment plunged. The cathedral has been closed to the public since the Aug. 23 quake. Hundreds of tourists a day typically visit the majestic structure, and there are usually daily worship services. Services last Sunday and this coming Sunday are being held at the nearby Washington Hebrew Congregation, which lent its space. Officials said they have put up a long construction fence around the building, from which at least one heavy spire top, or finial, plummeted to the ground during the earthquake. They also plan to put up temporary covered walkways through which guests can come for the Sept. 11 anniversary events. MICHELLE BOORSTEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Budget Secretary: Md. Has $344M Surplus 7ddWfeb_i" CZ$ Gov. Martin O’Malley’s budget secretary said Thursday that the state has a general fund surplus of $344 million over previous budget estimates for fiscal year 2011, which ended June 30. T. Eloise Foster wrote in a letter to O’Malley that the previous budget estimate projected the state would finish the fiscal year with a balance of $646 million. The surplus means the state has

a fund balance of $990 million. Foster attributed the surplus primarily to strong performance in individual income tax collections. “It is unclear whether this strength will continue moving forward due to current uncertainties in the national economy,” Foster wrote. Foster also said state agencies have returned about $23.8 million in unspent appropriations to the state’s general fund, which is

about $13.5 billion. About $589.7 million of the fund balance will be used to help balance the fiscal year 2012 budget, Foster said. That leaves about $400 million in uncommitted fund balance. Foster said about $340 million of the uncommitted fund balance will go to the state’s rainy day fund, $10 million will go to the general fund balance, and $50 million will go to transfer tax repayment.

Not Quite Quake-Proof Review: Many U.S. reactors are more vulnerable than previously believed

Containers at the North Anna nuclear power plant in Virginia shifted a few inches in last week’s quake.

The risk that an earthquake would cause a severe accident at a U.S. nuclear plant is greater than previously thought — 24 times as high in one case, according to an AP analysis of preliminary government data. The nation’s nuclear regulator believes a quarter of America’s reactors may need modifications to make them safer. The threat came into sharp focus last week, when shaking from the largest earthquake to hit Virginia in 117 years appeared to exceed what the North Anna nuclear power plant northwest of Richmond was built to sustain. The two North Anna reactors are among 27 in the eastern and central U.S. that a preliminary Nuclear Regulatory Commission review has said may need upgrades. That’s because those plants are more likely to get hit with an earthquake larger than the one their design was based on. Just how many nuclear power plants are more vulnerable won’t be determined until all operators recalculate their own seismic risk based on new assessments by geologists, something the agency plans to request later this year. The NRC on Thursday issued a draft of that request for public comment. The review, launched before the East Coast quake and the Japan nuclear disaster in March, marks the first complete update to seismic risk in years for the nation’s 104 existing reactors. The NRC and the industry say reactors are safe as they are, for now. But emails obtained in a more than 11,000-page records request by The Associated Press show that

É?j ?i Dej W =eeZ Ijeho \eh KiÊ After the March earthquake in Japan that caused the biggest nuclear crisis since Chernobyl, Nuclear Regulatory Commission staffers fretted in emails that the agency’s understanding of earthquake risk for existing reactors was out of date. In a March 15 email, seismologist Annie Kammerer acknowledged that recent science showed stronger quakes could happen than had been accounted for. “Frankly, it is not a good story for us,” she wrote to agency colleagues. (AP)

NRC experts were worried privately this year that plants needed stronger safeguards to account for the higher risk assessments. Federal scientists update seismic assessments every five to six years to revise building codes for some structures. But no similar system is in place for all but two of the nation’s 104 reactors — even though improving earthquake science has revealed greater risks than previously realized. The exception is Diablo Canyon in earthquake-prone California, which has been required to review the risk of an earthquake routinely since 1985. The NRC flagged the 27 plants by calculating the likelihood of a severe accident based on 2008 hazard maps from the U.S. Geological Survey and comparing it to the seismic risk estimated in 1989 or 1994 — the last time existing reactors evaluated their earthquake hazards. Officials at The Perry 1 reactor in Ohio, which saw the steepest rise in risk, and other plants have challenged the findings. The average risk to U.S. reactors of core damage from a quake remains low, at one accident every 500 years, according to the AP analysis. But predicting earthquake probability and damage is dicey; the Japanese nuclear industry was taken by surprise when the quake-

LW$ FbWdj HWjjb[Z Last week’s central Virginia earthquake jolted huge concrete containers holding spent nuclear fuel at the North Anna power plant in Louisa County, shifting some one to four inches, said the plant’s operator, Dominion Virginia Power. The containers, called casks, weigh 115 tons each and are filled with bundles of uranium dioxide fuel rods that no longer generate enough heat to produce electricity. The plant houses a total of 53 casks on two concrete pads. Of 27 casks on one pad, 25 shifted during the magnitude5.8 earthquake that struck Aug. 23 12 miles south of the plant, said Dominion spokesman Richard Zuercher. “They are safe and remain intact,” Zuercher said. Still, based on the AP analysis of Nuclear Regulatory Commission data, the plant is 38 percent more likely to suffer core damage from a rare, massive earthquake than it appeared in an analysis 20 years ago. On Monday night, when the lights go on at Byrd Stadium, when the Terrapins and the Hurricanes run onto the field, all of the offseason drama will fade away and what’s left will be the game. What will that look like? No one knows. Both Maryland and Miami have reinvented themselves since December. New coaching staffs, new philosophies, new expectations. Maryland coach Randy Edsall, plucked from Big East champion Connecticut, promptly hired

offensive coordinator Gary Crowton from LSU, with the intent of creating an Oregon-style offense — fewer huddles, more touchdowns. The idea excites QB Danny O’Brien, last year’s ACC freshman of the year. But will O’Brien and his teammates have a complete grasp of the offense by opening night?

“It’s a tough learning curve at first because not only do you have to learn the playbook, but you’re going at a different tempo at practice,” he said last week. “The philosophy is more ‘get in as many plays as you can.’” Regime change at Miami adds an extra layer of difficulty to the film study and game-planning.

A[[f_d] Wd ;o[ ed j^[ Ijehc The Maryland-Miami matchup promises to have the full attention of the college football universe, with most watching to see how Miami weathers the storm created by lurid accusations of impropriety at Miami dating back more than a decade. Eight current Hurricane players — including starting quarterback Jacory Harris, right — will be ineligible for the Maryland game, some for several more games. The biggest impact of the NCAA’s penalty could be felt on defense, where the Hurricanes are without safety Ray-Ray Armstrong and linebacker Sean Spence, both of whom are expected to be among the ACC’s best at their positions. (D.T.)

With former Temple coach Al Golden taking over at Miami, the Terrapins must decide who exactly they are facing: the Owls or the Hurricanes, the scheme or the personnel. On the defensive side of the ball, junior tackle Joe Vellano, a former walk-on who led the team in sacks last year, said that the uncertainty might mean the game is decided more by brute than brains. “It’s a lot tougher than just watching last year’s same offense and defense,” he said. “The best thing you can do is just come off the ball and play it out.” The Terrapins should get used to it. Their first three games — Miami, West Virginia and Temple — are against teams with new head coaches. DEREK TURNER

ifehji 1) OKLAHOMA The Sooners should be prolific offensively with quarterback Landry Jones and eight other starters back.

2) ALABAMA Quarterback is one of the few questions for Coach Nick Saban. The defense, and particularly the secondary, should be downright dominant.

3) OREGON LaMichael James, the nation’s leading rusher, returns to the always entertaining “blur” offense. But the Ducks must deal with turnover on both lines.

Hokies Find Their New Leader Logan Thomas gets his chance to prove he’s up to the task

4) LOUISIANA STATE Off-field adversity this month has generated adversity heading into the marquee season opener against Oregon.

5) BOISE STATE The Broncos enter the Mountain West Conference with a defense that will be stout.

6) FLORIDA STATE Coach Jimbo Fisher has the ACC’s most talented team. Quarterback E.J. Manuel takes full control of the offense, while the defensive sack-masters do their thing.

7) STANFORD The return of quarterback Andrew Luck overshadows turnover on the offensive line.

Virginia Tech hopes to use QB Logan Thomas’ 6-foot-6 frame to its advantage.

The only thing he hasn’t done: Doing those things against another team. He’ll get that chance Saturday when the No. 13 Hokies play Appalachian State. “I think it will be a little bit different. Maybe when I’m standing in the tunnel, but as of right now, I’m the same person I’ve always been, calm and collected, but it’s still only Tuesday,” he said earlier

this week. “Saturday is probably going to be a different story.” Even those pregame jitters don’t figure to last long, and that’s what coach Frank Beamer is counting on. “All indications, Logan is very even keeled, he’s very smart, he’s very competitive, he’s very tough,” Beamer said of the 6-foot-6 redshirt sophomore. “All those things tell me that he’s going to be just fine.”

Thomas’ 5-inch height advantage over former Hokies QB Turod Taylor will add new wrinkles to the Hokies’ offense, quarterback coach Mike O’Cain said. O’Cain will also have something to prove Saturday, since he has taken over the play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring. Because he can see over the

>[_icWd >ef[\kbi Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck may be the front-runner, but he’s no lock to win the Heisman Trophy. Considering that nine of the last 11 Heisman winners have been quarterbacks, here are three more who could continue that trend:

8) TEXAS A&M Considering that key games against Texas and Oklahoma State are at home, the Aggies should be looking at their best season this century.

9) OKLAHOMA STATE A new offensive coordinator should not slow down the Cowboys, who are led by quarterback Brandon Weeden and wide receiver Justin Blackmon.

10) NEBRASKA If quarterback Taylor Martinez can find consistency, the Cornhuskers could play in their first Big Ten championship game.

Kellen Moore, Boise State: The Broncos again are positioned to crash the BCS party because of Moore, who led the nation in pass efficiency (182.63) last season. With his eighth victory, he’ll pass Colt McCoy as the NCAA’s all-time winningest quarterback.

Landry Jones, Oklahoma: The junior who holds seven school passing records will power the offense of the preseason No. 1 team. Jones threw for at least 300 yards nine times last season, when he led the nation in completions and attempts.

Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State: A strong-armed elder statesman, Weeden, who will turn 28 this season, leads a prolific offense that returns 10 starters. Weeden owns four of the top seven single-game passing totals in school history.

Andrew Luck, Stanford: Last season, Luck completed 70 percent of his passes and threw for 3,338 yards and 32 touchdowns (with eight interceptions) under Jim Harbaugh, who is now coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Luck is comfortable with first-year coach David Shaw, who had been the offensive coordinator under Harbaugh. Crediting Shaw with everything from teaching him the West Coast offense to instilling a strong practice routine during his redshirt season, Luck says the transition has been smooth. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Logan Thomas, who has had Virginia Tech’s quarterback job since Tyrod Taylor moved on to the NFL after last season, is still a work in progress. He was recruited to Virginia Tech as a tight end, switched to quarterback and still has a tendency to let his eyes follow his intended receiver, or to run out of the pocket before giving a play a chance. (AP)

defensive line more readily than Taylor, the Hokies may employ more short passes to tailback David Wilson. The goal is to try to get the speedy Wilson into open space with the ball. Thomas also throws the deep ball better than Taylor. Senior wide receiver Danny Coale thinks the Hokies are in good hands. “He doesn’t get rattled. He’s someone we look to throughout the game in tough situations and he’s certainly going to have his tough situations,” Coale said. “We’d like to say it’s going to go perfect, but odds are, he’s going to have some bumps along the way.” (AP)

Sabrina Soto DESIGNER, STAR OF “THE HIGH LOW PROJECT” On HGTV shows like “Get It Sold” and “House Hunters,” designer/ host Sabrina Soto won fans for her bubbly attitude and elegant, eclectic designs. Now, the onetime Washingtonian is back on the nesting network with the “The High Low Project” (premieres Sat., 8:30 p.m.). On it, Soto helps homeowners redo rooms with luxe looks but on weensy budgets.

because everyone thinks you have to do it all in one weekend. But if you do projects a piece at a time, with an overall concept, that’s better.

On the program, you show homeowners a spendy rehab of a room, and then do it for far less. Why? It’s really interesting to show what a really high-end look would cost, and then show that you can do it in a way that’s much less.

But aren’t there things we should spend money on? Yes, you should splurge on some things, like sofas. But a pillow or a vase, it’s easier to find it at a bargain price. You shouldn’t buy a $600 pillow!

What keeps people from redoing their rooms? I think it can be overwhelming,

Where are your favorite places to score good deals? I love looking on Etsy. You can find

Which rooms are hardest to redo on a budget? A kitchen is really hard to do on a budget. And getting bigger pieces of furniture for cheap can be hard.

What about estate sales — aren’t they a good source of pieces? With estate sales, it’s a whole house, and so many items; a lot of times you’ll get bigger, better deals. What inspires your designs? I’m not one of those designers who goes to one place. I really try to get inspired by the client. I love looking online at blogs for ideas. Which blogs do you like? I like Apartmentherapy.com, Casasugar.com and Purestylehome.blogspot.com. They’re making it easier to design your home. You pick and choose inspiration instead of copying one room entirely. What’s your own pad like? I moved from a house in Bethesda to an apartment in New York, so squeezing all my clothes into it has been tough. The apartment is really modern. I’ve got an Eames table and modern art. What do you miss about D.C.? I miss my haircut and dermatologist, and how easy it was to get around by car. It’s better than a taxi! Labor Day is this weekend. I’m confused about the rule that prohibits the wearing of white after that date. Where does it come from, and why should I pay attention to it? — MIR ANDA

Style, Not Cramped

Manolo says it has been two or more years since anyone has asked the Manolo about the white shoes and the Day of Labor, the fact that the Manolo takes as evidence of the final death throes of this old rule. Its origin lies in the ancient his-

But if the reality of sharing ONE bathroom with six girls and one vain dude means you go to work a bit too fresh-faced, an Over-the-Door Vanity Station ($89, Urbanoutfitters. com) might preserve domestic harmony. It has a mirror and shelves on which to stash lipsticks and such.

Blend of the World

London Sprawling IF WEARING RALPH LAUREN’S Rugby says, “I went to Choate,” then donning Jack Wills says, “I went to Eton and dated Cambridge girls.” British import Jack Wills (1079 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202-333-7980) just stomped into Georgetown, selling preppy Sloane Ranger wear for dandies and Anglophiles. The stripey-walled space recalls an English estate overrun by friends of Pippa and Harry — think Union Jacks formed of red and blue shot glasses, and rare books lining shelves. U.K.-bred clothes include blokes’ peacoats ($298, shown) and skinny jeans ($89, shown), plus women’s tweed blazers ($98) in the English rose tradition.

who transformed Paris fashion and the female form also respected the nose. Coco Chanel, a gal who trusted numerology and horoscopes (No. 5 was named for quintessence, whatever that is), found her last fragrant creation, No. 19, otherworldly. Thus, she made it her signature scent and christened it for the day she was born: Aug. 19. Chanel scent pro Jacques Polge’s retool of No. 19 ($80, Neimanmarcus.com) just debuted on Ms. C’s b-day, bringing woodsy, light notes of Iris. Maybe they should’ve just called it No. 1.

tory of Edwardian America, when lightweight suits, hats and shoes in light colors became the preferred summertime clothing of the leisured. When the summers ended, these casual clothings were put away, and black and brown were resumed. To have several suits of seasonal clothing was considered the mark of refinement, hence it became the rule to which the socially elevated rigorously adhered. White in summer; black and brown the rest of the year. Now, of the course, we live in the vastly more crass and materialistic culture, and clothing is cheaply made. The rich and famous are distinguished not by their sartorial refinement, but by their outrageous televised antics. And so the Manolo’s rule is wear what you desire, as long as it is wellmade and appropriate to the occasion. If the weather is hot, and you are dining on the patio, wear the white shoes even if it is late September. Here is the Just a Little Knotty Wedge from Lilly Pulitzer ($178, Zappos.com), not exactly white, but still the fun and flirty post-Day of Labor rule breaker. A woman’s using her body to get what she wants is often frowned upon, whether what she wants is a free drink or a way out of a speeding ticket. In “The Debt,” which opened Wednesday, Jessica Chastain plays a woman who puts it all on the line — or, rather, in the stirrups. Rachel is a Mossad agent in the ’60s on her first mission: to capture a Nazi war criminal. Though she’s qualified (she can do some pretty wicked 8o Ah_ij[d Krav Maga), she gets FW][#A_hXo the job because she’s a woman. How do I know? Because (warning: minor spoiler ahead) the guy they’re tracking is working in East Berlin as an ob-gyn. Mossad needs someone with a uterus so it can get close enough to catch the bad guy. I’m not sure anyone who hasn’t had the business end of the speculum in their, ah, business could watch Rachel during an examination and understand exactly what’s going on. Most people would be uncomfortable with a former Nazi in their personal space; Rachel has a former Nazi palpating her ovaries. Director John Madden effectively communicates both Rachel’s willingness and her hesitancy to enlist her most intimate parts in the line of duty. Her body is hers, but she’s chosen to lend it to her country. She gets ahead in her career. Mossad gets a shot at capturing the bad guy. Everyone wins — except she’s the one who’ll remember exactly where his hands were. Comments? Give Kristen your feedback: expressnightout.com/thereelist

Though Helen Mirren features

most prominently in advertising materials, the film’s heart beats with the younger version of her character, played by this year’s breakthrough actress, Jessica Chastain (“The Tree of Life,” “The Help”). It is Chastain who survives the film’s most chilling encounters: As Rachel Singer, an agent pursuing “Surgeon of Birkenau” Dieter Vogel (perpetrator of concentration-camp medical experiments), she poses as an East German fertility patient and allows

the man she’s hunting to give her multiple medical examinations. We know from the film’s first scenes (set in 1997) that Singer’s team will capture the doctor, who will later be killed trying to escape and that the three (which include Marton Csokas and Sam Worthington) will be hailed as Israeli heroes. But how they caught Vogel, and their attempts to bring him back alive, are the meat of the story, and director John Madden proves adept at sus-

Garance Le Guillermic plays the 11-yearold Paloma, who plans to kill herself by her 12th birthday in ‘The Hedgehog.”

J^[ >[Z][^e] DH Director: Mona Achache Stars: Garance Le Guillermic In a Nutshell: A story about the changes in relationships between residents of an apartment building.

it’s based on, has two protagonists: Paloma (Garance Le Guillermic), an artistically inclined soul who is making a documentary about her family, and Renee (Josiane Balasko);, who observes all, with a jaundiced eye, from her small rooms just off the building’s lobby. Each has a sour outlook on life. Paloma is disgusted with the hypocrisies of bourgeois life, and has resolved to kill herself by her 12th birthday. Renee is the hedgehog of the title, prickly on the outside, refined on the inside. But Paloma has a bit of a tough hide too. “The Hedgehog” is about a lot of things: class consciousness, culture and the power of art. But mostly it’s about the discovery that change is always possible, and that it’s never too late to embrace love, or life. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

But they’re still up to their immature shenanigans; at least that’s the case in the preposterous, juvenile and surprisingly funny “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy.” The comedy, starring Jason Sudeikis as Eric, follows a tightknit group of 30-year-olds (featuring the likes of Tyler Labine and Nick Kroll), whose friendships date to high school. FbWo_d] 30 MINUTES OR LESS (R, 83 minutes) Jesse Eisenberg plays Nick, a pizza delivery guy who falls into a trap set by spoiled brat Dwayne (Danny McBride) to steal $100,000 to pay off a hit man to assassinate Dwayne’s rich father. With a bomb strapped to his chest and only a few hours to find the money, Nick and his best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari), cut a manic, destructive swath through Grand

Rapids, Mich., surviving a ballistic bank robbery and pulverizing car crash and ongoing patter about sex, action flicks and sex. Like “Horrible Bosses,” “The Change-Up” and “The Hangover Part II,” “30 Minutes or Less” plays like this summer’s latest — and lamest — panegyric to male friendship. A.H. THE CHANGE-UP (R, 113 minutes) “Freaky Friday” meets “The Hangover” in “The Change-Up,” a raunchy ode to guy-love in which Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds struggle valiantly to transcend the movie they’re in. Bateman doesn’t get to have nearly as much fun as Mitch’s straight-laced bestie Dave, a type-A lawyer with a beautiful wife (Leslie Mann) and three kids. For the most part, he’s called on to turn on his signature nervous grimace. Mitch and Dave switch bodies early on and must impersonate each other until they can switch back. A.H. the delicate Colombian orchid for which she’s named. Of course, her parents are dead, her boyfriend is at great risk and she draws the flower in black lipstick on the bodies of her victims. Yes, Cataleya is an assassin. And, yes, she has vowed revenge on the drug dealers who killed her folks. But despite a list of hits that’s topped 20, the killer — played by “Avatar’s” Zoe Saldana — is a sensitive, sometimes weepy soul. And “Colombiana,” at least by comparison with such Besson franchises as the “Transporter” series, has a gentle touch. MARK JENKINS COWBOYS & ALIENS (PG-13, 118 minutes) Jon Favreau’s celebration of two of cinema’s most revered genres doesn’t stint in lavishing their most cherished conventions with evenhanded affection and respect. Daniel Craig plays Jake Lonergan, who as the movie opens wakes up alone in the desert with a mysterious injury and a heavy metal bracelet around his wrist. When he rides into nearby Absolution, he immediately makes his presence felt, swatting down a bully named Percy Dolarhyde (Paul Dano), whose father, Woodrow (Harrison Ford), owns a huge cattle ranch nearby. When strange lights appear in the sky and some of the townsfolk are sucked into hovering vehicles overhead, the taciturn Lonergan and the crustily misanthropic Woodrow Dolarhyde join forces to track down the interstellar outlaws and bring their people home. A.H. CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (PG-13, 118 minutes) “Crazy, Stupid, Love” opens with a clever montage of couples’ feet engaging

in all manner of furtive flirtation under restaurant tables. When the camera lands on Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) and his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), their troubles are clear. She’s wearing comehither heels while Cal is decked out in schlumpy New Balance sneakers. She’s still trying, but Cal has given up, which accounts for why Emily announces at that same restaurant that she wants a divorce. He numbly agrees, moves out of their comfortable house and into a depressing bachelor pad and begins hitting a singles bar, where he comes under the tutelage of serial seducer Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), a playah Pygmalion who takes Cal on as a personal makeover project. What ensues is the kind of smooth, fitfully funny, finely machined romantic comedy that is expertly calibrated to hit all the rom-com happy places. A.H. D O N ’ T B E A F R A I D OF THE DARK (R, 99 minutes) Augmented by just enough CGI to bring its icky gremlins to life, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” feels retro in all the right ways. Screenwriters Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins adapted the script from a 1973 TV movie of the same name. The changes they made pull the tale further back, though, into the realm of fable — especially their decision to change the protagonist from an adult to a little girl: Sally (Bailee Madison) has been sent by her preoccupied mother to live with her father and his new girlfriend (Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes) in the grand old mansion they’re renovating. Sally

doesn’t want to be there but can’t resist exploring. Soon she discovers a hidden basement whose rusty, bolted-up ash pit speaks to her. Scratchy, faint voices whisper to Sally, offering friendship. Followers of del Toro’s work will see reminders of “Pan’s Labyrinth” here, but the storyteller is writing for another director, first-timer Troy Nixey, and keeps the action rooted in the real world. JOHN DEFORE FINAL DESTINATION 5 (R, 92 minutes) Nothing in life is certain but death and sequels. Make that sequels about death — teen-oriented exploitation movies in which generic young actors meet their fates in a series of gruesome, occasionally suspenseful scenes. The latest of these, “Final Destination 5,” isn’t as novel as it hopes to be, but it gets the job done. Here, the villain is fate itself, a sense that the entire physical world is loaded with inevitable death for those who somehow evade the Reaper the first time he comes calling. The camera in “FD5” treats inanimate objects — malfunctioning air conditioners, say — as killers whose mindlessness only makes them more unstoppable. While viewers will get plenty of nervous giggles out of watching as burping water-coolers or (yes!) inappropriately ringing cell phones trigger fatal mishaps, the filmmakers don’t milk the this-leads-to-that ele-

Once the initial trigger happens, there’s not a lot of fun left in the scene. J.D. FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS (R, 108 minutes) Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake fairly set the screen on fire as cynics who agree to use each other for physical gratification but otherwise remain steadfastly un-love-struck. Kunis’ character is harddriving media headhunter named Jamie, a savvy consumer of romantic comedy cliches, who is nonetheless powerless to resist their happily-ever-after promises. After Jamie persuades Timberlake’s Dylan to move to New York to become art

director at GQ, the two become best buds, deciding one drunken evening to step up their game. Kunis possesses particular zing as a tart, unsentimental romantic heroine. But if Kunis gets the showier role, Timberlake proves a quietly charming stalking horse, finally claiming and fully owning the spotlight with a hilarious homage to the 1990s rap duo Kriss Kross. A.H FRIGHT NIGHT (R, 120 minutes) “Fright Night” improves on the premise it has been handed, producing a modernized version of a decades-old story that’s superior to its predecessor in virtually every aspect. In this case, “Fright Night” director Craig Gillespie remakes Todd Holland’s 1985 horror-comedy of the same name. The story still steals from Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece “Rear Window” with awkward teenager Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) casting suspicions that his mysterious new neighbor, Jerry (Colin Farrell), is a vampire. As Charlie’s accusations fall on deaf ears, the arrogant Jerry engages in a deadly cat-and-mouse game that draws in Charlie’s childhood friend (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and his girlfriend (Imogene Poots). At its best, “Fright Night” mixes sly pop-culture references, “Twilight” jabs and Scooby gang jokes with legitimately suspenseful horror sequences sure to Continued on page 28

[dj[hjW_dc[dj beeaekj July 15, 1988, ends in a platonic cuddle amid vows always to stay friends. “One Day,” which screenwriter David Nicholls adapted from his own novel, then traces the erstwhile couple’s friendship in episodic snapshots captured on succeeding July 15ths, tracing their lives and careers as the brainy, slightly cynical Emma seeks the writer’s life and Dexter — rich, spoiled, lazy — becomes a cheesy MTV talk show host. As personified by Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, Emma and Dexter make for a pretty convincing friends-who-should-be-lovers couple, a la Harry and Sally et alia. A.H. OUR IDIOT BROTHER (R, 96 minutes) “Our Idiot Brother” turns out to be mistitled. It should be called “The Brother We Treat Like an Idiot,” and that goes as much for the filmmakers as the dysfunctional family at the core of this easygoing misfire. Paul Rudd plays Ned Rochlin,

origin story, which charts the ascent of a hyper-intelligent chimp named Caesar (Andy Serkis, in motion-capture CGI) to the role of leader of an ape underground, after suffering abuse at the hands of a sadistic handler at a primate shelter (Tom Felton). Caesar and his simian followers are both relatable and scary as heck. Now for the bad news. The filmmakers seem to have spent so much attention and, pre-

sumably, money on getting the primates right that they completely forgot about the people. Led by a mumble-mouthed James Franco the cast of human actors is uniformly weak. M.O. When he gets out of jail, he embarks on a serial-crash with his three sisters, upending their lives with his anarchic honesty and unbridled naivete. Peeking out from a curtain of shaggy hair and a beard, Rudd makes “Our Idiot Brother” much more tolerable than it deserves to be. A.H. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (PG-13, 110 minutes) First, the good news. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” the muchanticipated prequel to the sci-fi movie franchise of the late ’60s and early ’70s about a world ruled by apes, gets one thing exactly right. The apes, which we see on the cusp of world domination, are both terrifying and sympathetic. That’s not an easy trick. Yet it’s critical to this

The Page-to-Stage Festival functions as a preview space for dozens of local theater companies that want to show what they’ve been working on. The plays are staged readings and open rehearsals, but the point of the weekend isn’t finished work — it’s seeing what theater looks like in development. The Shakespeare Theatre is known for bringing filmed productions from London and comedy troupes from New York, but it doesn’t neglect art from D.C.: thus the Tiber Creek Cabaret, a collection of alternative D.C. acts including burlesque dancing and steampunk music. The appeal of the “Grease” Sing-a-Long is obvious. Of course, if you’re hopelessly devoted to the movie musical about 1950s high schoolers who are mean to each other until they realize that to fit in you have to smoke and wear ugly catsuits, you’ve probably been singing along for years anyway. If so, the Sing-A-Long is just an opportunity to find new friends. AFI Silver, 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring; Fri.-Sun., $7-$11; 301-495-6720, Afi. com/silver. (Silver Spring)

?j MedÊj 8[ j^[ IWc[ Jerry Lewis’ reign hosting the annual MDA Telethon is over If[Y_Wbi No one would sniff at all the dollars Jerry Lewis raised for muscular dystrophy: a couple of billion during his 45-year reign as host of the MDA Telethon. But what kind of TV did he offer in exchange? The short answer: Jerry put on a show like no other. Labor Day this year promises to be bland by comparison, with the 85-year-old Lewis now banished from the annual rite he built from scratch and molded in his image. Annual MDA Labor Day Telethon” will fill just six hours (Sunday from 6 p.m. to midnight; airing locally on the CW), rather than the grueling 21 ½-hour endurance contest that Lewis used to churn through. On this year’s broadcast (which, ironically, will no longer be actually airing on Labor Day), a quartet of lightweights are standing in for Jerry: Nigel Lythgoe (“So You Think You Can Dance”), Nancy O’Dell (“Entertainment Tonight”), Alison Sweeney (“The Biggest Loser”) and Jann Carl (billed as “an Emmy-winning journalist”). It may be entertaining. It may spur contributions. But as a media event, this year’s telethon can hardly match the display of wretched excess Lewis guaranteed, especially in his epic, unbridled prime.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
