‘Your Honor, my dog ate them’
The 3-year-old Great Dane was miserable and retching when its owners rushed it to a Portland, Ore., animal hospital. Turns out, it was something he ate. X-rays showed a stomach full of “a large quantity of foreign material.” Nearly two hours of surgery later, Dr. Ashley Magee had the answer — the dog had consumed 43 ½ socks. The Great Dane was discharged a day after surgery. (AP)
An Australian man who was in a weeklong coma in early 2012 after being in a car crash woke up speaking only Mandarin for several days, according to the Daily Mirror. The newspaper reported Ben McMahon, 22, had taken the Chinese language in class, but was never fluent at it. Now, he lives in Shanghai, studying commerce. (EXPRESS)
An attorney who habitually appears in court without socks faces sanctions including possible fines if he shows up without them again in one Indiana courtroom. Blackford Circuit Judge Dean Young issued an Aug. 26 order directing attorney Todd Glickfield to wear appropriate business attire, including socks and a tie, in future proceedings in Young’s Hartford City courtroom. The Eisenhower Memorial, dubbed a “five-star folly” by a House committee in July, got its latest set of revisions Thursday. The memorial has been in the works for more than a decade, but controversy over the design has kept it mired in the planning stages. Architect Frank Gehry tried to appease the haters by removing two metal tapestries and several columns. R.S.

The Richmond alt-weekly went all out for its preview coverage, with an adult activity book featuring “games and puzzles to guide you through the courtroom commotion of the former Virginia governor and first lady.” The paper also held a contest seeking the most creative interpretation of the coloring-book cover.

Bob McDonnell ducks into a waiting car Thursday after his conviction.
MARVIN JOSEPH (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The pathetic, stunning fall of a GOP star
Ex-governor convicted Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, are found guilty on 20 total charges RICHMOND A federal jury Thursday found former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, guilty of public corruption — sending a message that they believed the couple sold the office once occupied by Thomas Jefferson to a free spending Richmond businessman for golf outings, lavish vacations and $120,000 in sweetheart loans. After three days of deliberations, the seven men and five women acquitted the couple of several charges — but nevertheless found that they lent the prestige of the governor’s office to Jonnie Williams Sr. The moment the first guilty verdict was read, Bob McDonnell closed his eyes tightly, shaking in his seat as he wept. Maureen seemed to cry, too, though with her back to the courtroom, her tears were less obvious.
expressline
At the eighth guilty count, Bob McDonnell buried his face in his hands. By the end, he was slumped in his chair, still crying. The verdict means that McDonnell is now the first governor in Virginia history to be convicted of a crime. He and his wife face decades in federal prison, though their actual sentence could fall well short of that. The former governor was convicted of 11 corruption-related counts pending against him. The former first lady was convicted of eight corruption-related charges, along with obstruction of justice. U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer set a sentencing hearing for Jan. 6. The verdict brings to a close a trial that seemed to grip the nation since it began in July with the shocking revelation by defense attorneys that the McDonnells’ marriage was shattered, and that
reaction “It was a tough decision, but it was not a hard decision. … It was hard … to see his family go through that. But when it came down to brass tacks, we knew the decision we had to make.” A FEMALE JUROR in the McDonnell
trial who lives near Richmond and asked not to be identified
“I am deeply saddened by the events of the trial that ended in today’s verdict, and the impact it has had on our Commonwealth’s reputation for honesty and clean government.” VIRGINIA GOV. TERRY McAULIFFE, in
a statement. He added that he would continue to pray for the McDonnell family and for those affected by the trial.
Man in custody for tossing package over White House fence
would be a core element of their defense. The proceedings that followed at times resembled a soap opera. Jurors heard from 67 witnesses, including Williams and the former governor himself, who took the stand in his own defense for nearly 24 hours over several days. They were shown photos of McDonnell flashing a Rolex watch, mortgage applications, phone records, more charts than they probably care to remember. After the verdicts were read, the McDonnells, who have been living apart since the trial began, left in separate vehicles. Maureen McDonnell didn’t speak, but her husband thanked the crush of media on the sidewalk for “the way you’ve handled this.” Just before ducking into his car he said, “All I can say is my trust belongs in the Lord.” Defense attorney Henry “Hank” Asbill assured reporters the McDonnells would appeal. MATT ZAPOTOSKY AND ROSALIND
POLITICS In March 2012, The Fix ranked the 10 most likely Republican vice presidential picks for GOP nominee Mitt Romney. Bob McDonnell ranked second. Two years later, the former Virginia governor was found guilty on 11 charges of public corruption. McDonnell’s fall is stunning and ensures his spot among disgraced politicians with national ambition alongside John Edwards. What’s even more remarkable is the stupidity, avarice and political blindness that led him to this day. McDonnell had long been touted as a rising star. He was socially conservative but not in a way that scared establishment Republicans or independents. He was a gifted communicator. And he had the “it” factor — a mix of charisma and the common touch. McDonnell’s reputation — and his record of success — was what made initial reporting about the McDonnells’ relationship with Jonnie Williams Sr. all the more incredible. There is simply no way any politician so able and ambitious would not see the relationship was deeply inappropriate. It’s inconceivable. In the end, I am left amazed at the vast gap between how McDonnell was regarded (including by me) and who he turned out to be. His judgment, touted as one of his best attributes, wound up being one of his worst. CHRIS CILLIZZA Bob McDonnell and Mitt Romney in 2012

PR. GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD. Nearly every time Krista Williams passes by the remains of the old Glenn Dale Tuberculosis Hospital in Prince George’s County, all she can do is shake her head in disappointment. The former hospital sits on 210 acres that haven’t been developed since it closed more than 30 years ago. “We want open space and park land for our children,” said Williams, the president of a nearby civic association. But getting any kind of development on the swath of land just outside the Capital Beltway has proven elusive. The old hospital, a collection of 23 buildings, is laden with lead and asbestos, and local officials have never been able to entice a developer.
In addition, state law requires that the hospital campus be used as a continuing care retirement community and that the remaining 150 acres be dedicated for parks and recreation. Those restrictions have limited interest in the property, which often is a destination for amateur movie makers and graffiti artists. Now, there is some hope. The property was recently included on the National Register of Historic Places, a distinction that public officials say will inject new life into the site. The designation should help the property receive federal and state tax credits for rehabilitation work, which residents hope will attract a potential buyer. HAMIL R. HARRIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Time traveling: An artist captures Metro moments Time takes on funny qualities inside a subway station. If a train is arriving when you’re still behind the faregates, everything seems to speed up as you rush to catch it. But if you miss that train and find yourself facing a 10-minute wait, clocks kick back. Every second feels like an eternity. For artist Roberto Bocci, who’s obsessed with time, this phenomenon makes transportation systems the ideal muse. He’s been capturing images of subways around the world for
11
more than 20 years. And with his new show, Bocci turns his lens on D.C.’s Metro. “It’s the most beautiful subway system in the world,” gushes the associate professor of digital media and photography at Georgetown University. “It looks like the Roman Pantheon.” (This is especially high praise coming from an Italian.) He debuted his “Roberto Bocci: Metrorail” installation this week at Rosslyn’s Artisphere. It’s four videos made with a GoPro camera, a device unobtrusive enough that he was able to shoot countless hours of material without
attracting attention. So it’s a tad ironic that his favorite piece in the series is titled “Selfie.” He aimed the camera at his face and set it to take a picture every three seconds. His compilation of 8,000 of these images allows viewers to tag along with him as he rides the rails all day and night — with a break at Dupont to visit that other kind of Subway, so he can get a bite to eat. On Wednesday, Bocci will unveil a second part of the “Metrorail” exhibit at the Heurich Gallery. At the opening reception and artist talk that evening, he’ll discuss the six panoramic photos and one additional video on view. The sweeping perspective of the photos draws attention to the sheer size of the stations, and allows him to collapse time in another way. One panorama, Bocci explains, provides a view of a single platform at several moments simultaneously: “The train is coming in, so you see the headlights. Then it slows, and becomes still in the middle of the image. Toward the end, it moves again.” In other words, it’s a way to experience Metro like you never have before. AG Holder announces Ferguson police probe FERGUSON, MO. T h e Ju s t ic e D e p a r t me nt launched a broad investigation Thursday into the police department in Ferguson, Mo., following the shooting last month of an unarmed black 18-year-old by a white police officer. The investigation, which goes beyond an existing federal probe into the Aug. 9 shooting, will look for patterns of discrimination within the predominantly white department and focus on how officers use force, search and arrest suspects, and treat
inmates at the city jail. The police department said it welcomed the investigation. In announcing the action, Attorney General Eric Holder said he and his department had heard numerous concerns from people there about police practices, a history of “deep mistrust” of law enforcement and a lack of diversity on the police force. Holder said the investigation will include a review of citizen complaints against officers, how those complaints were investigated by the department,
traffic stops that officers make, treatment of people detained in the city jail, and the type of training officers are given on racial profiling and use of force. It will most likely take months to complete. Black leaders in St. Louis said an external inquiry is welcomed and warranted, while police union officials said they are concerned that it might result in a “blame game” that fails to improve relations between the department and the community. NATO meets amid crises NATO leaders gathered at a golf resort Thursday in southern Wales for a two-day summit to hammer out new strategies to confront an arc of crises, from a revived Russian threat to the well-armed and highly organized extremist army that has conquered vast swaths of the Middle East. Warnings from Russia
President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron pressed fellow NATO leaders to confront the “brutal and poisonous” Islamic State militant group that is wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria. “Those who want to adopt an isolationist approach misunderstand the nature of security in the 21st century,” they wrote in a joint editorial published as the meetings began. While some NATO leaders talked tough about the threat posed by the Islamic State group, the alliance made no specific pledges of action.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko expressed optimism Thursday that a peace initiative advanced by Russia can bring a quick end to his country’s monthslong conflict. But Western allies promised to immediately hit Moscow with escalated sanctions if the negotiations, planned for Friday, turn out to be “a smoke screen” for further Russian intervention. A White House official said Obama and the other Western leaders expressed solidarity with Ukraine and agreed Russia should be punished for its conduct.
The Kremlin on Thursday underscored Russia’s opposition to NATO membership for Ukraine, warning that such a move could derail efforts to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine, as leaders of the alliance gathered at the summit in Wales. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Ukraine’s attempts to abandon its nonaligned status by joining the NATO alliance could “derail all efforts aimed at initiating a dialogue with the aim of ensuring national security,” reported the Russian news agency ITAR-TASS.

GOP’s hawkish turn
The rise of the Islamic State militant group tests Republican anti-interventionists At last week’s Americans for Prosperity meeting, Texas Gov. Rick Perry warned that if America doesn’t confront the Islamic State, “the price is only going to go up from here.”
MIKE STONE (GETTY IMAGES)
POLITICS A roiling national debate over how to deal with the radical Islamic State and other global hot spots has prompted a sudden shift in Republican politics, putting a halt to the anti-interventionist mood that had been gaining credence in the party. The change is evident on the campaign trail ahead of the November midterm elections and in recent appearances by the GOP’s prospective 2016 presidential candidates, with a near-universal embrace of stronger military actions against the group that beheaded two American journalists. A thirst among many conservative activists for a more muscular U.S. foreign policy was clear over the weekend at a meeting of Americans for Prosperity, the tea-party-affiliated group. The loudest applause came when Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called for bombing the Islamic State “back to the Stone Age.” The GOP’s changing tenor on foreign policy underscores the extent to which the party continues to struggle to forge its identity in the wake of the George W. Bush presidency. Libertarian-leaning conservatives like Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., gained momentum in part by criticizing the Iraq War and the growth of government on Bush’s watch in the form of domestic surveillance. Their heightened clout led to clashes with prominent GOP hawks such as Sen. John McCain,
who challenged Paul’s worldview as weak and dangerous. But now, growing public unease with the U.S. role in the world is prompting many Republicans to revert to a more familiar, anti-isolationist stance. Not only are Republicans calling broadly for military actions against the Islamic State, they are also accusing President Barack Obama of failing to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin and not doing enough to

stand by Israel amid its recent fighting with Hamas. Even Paul, a leader of the GOP’s anti-interventionist wing, has joined in the calls for a more hawkish approach. Two months ago, Paul, who had been a vocal critic of the war in Iraq, wrote a Wall Street Journal op-ed chiding advocates for expanding the U.S. troop presence on the ground there and deploying airstrikes. He wrote that “many of those clamoring for military action now are the same people who made every false assumption imaginable about the cost, challenge and purpose of the Iraq war.” But with the Islamic State now taking center stage, Paul has started to sound more sympathetic to an interventionist policy. “If I were president, I would call a joint session of Congress. I would lay out the reasoning of why ISIS is a threat to our national security and seek congressional authorization to destroy ISIS militarily,” Paul said in a statement released by his office. The re-emergence of the hawks is no doubt a response to the feelings of conservative activists such as Nancy Sterman, a business owner who attended the Americans for Prosperity meeting. “There’s a new crisis every week that adds to the frustration of the American people,” she said. “But, thankfully, people are waking up.” SEBASTIAN PAYNE AND ROBERT COSTA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

REDSKINS AT TEXANS | 1 P.M., SUNDAY, FOX
Is ‘weak link’ stronger?
Entering the 2014 season, the secondary is the biggest concern for the Redskins
Key matchup
REDSKINS From the first day of training camp, the Redskins’ beleaguered secondary has been front and center. “Nobody wants to be the weak link in any business or any organization,” cornerback DeAngelo Hall said then. As the Redskins prepare to begin the 2014 season Sunday at Houston, the biggest question that looms — even bigger than the play of Robert Griffin III or the game plans of new coach Jay Gruden — is how the secondary will perform under constant pressure. “We want to wipe some of that bad taste out of our mouths from last year,” Hall said. “We’ve been, I guess, the laughingstock of the

league for a while on defense.” Despite the unit’s large role in allowing 478 points last season, not much has changed — defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and defensive backs coach Raheem Morris are back, albeit with a more aggressive approach. Most of the players are returning as well, with a promise that they’ll deliver better results. “I’m ready to do whatever it takes to win,” safety Bacarri Rambo said. Rambo and cornerback David Amerson were part of the new blood brought in by the Redskins last year to revamp the secondary, but they struggled to adjust to the NFL with coverage and tackling. Both will be in the starting lineup Sunday, a testament

to their improvement and the Redskins’ lack of depth in the defensive backfield. “I’m a whole lot more mature than last year,” Rambo said. “I
feel a whole lot more comfortable with the scheme and knowing my responsibilities.” On the other end of the spectrum are veterans Hall, who arguably had his best pro season last year, and Ryan Clark, imported from Pittsburgh to provide veteran leadership and hard hits from the free safety position. “Getting people together, letting people understand the game plan — something that I’ve worked to be good at — I think that’s part of why they brought me here,” Clark said. The secondary knows that a lot of the team’s success hinges on their performance, and to their credit, they are ready to shoulder the responsibility. “If by the end of the season you could say the secondary for the Washington Redskins were winners, I think we’ll take that,” Clark said. Better, but no playoffs THE REDSKINS WILL WIN TWICE AS MANY GAMES THIS SEASON AS THEY DID LAST YEAR — maybe even a smidge more.
But becoming a playoff contender? Washington is more likely a year away from that happening, with quarterback Robert Griffin III being the deciding factor. Here are three reasons why the Redskins will be much better than
So you think you know the Redskins?
they were last year — when they went 3-13 — and two reasons why their improvements won’t be enough to get them into the postseason.

But why they’re not playoff-bound
Coaching change
Special teams
Receiving corps
Offensive line
Griffin’s education
Coach Mike Shanahan and his toxic culture are gone after three losing seasons in four years. Incoming coach Jay Gruden is converting Griffin into a pocket passer without great resistance from the quarterback. Gruden didn’t reveal his offense in the preseason, but his leadership is evident in the collaborative staff he has assembled. Owner Dan Snyder may have finally chosen well.
Last year’s unit was perhaps the worst in franchise history, but new coach Ben Kotwica’s “special forces” were sharp in coverage in preseason. Andre Roberts appears solid as a return man and kicker Kai Forbath is money on field goals, so his short kickoffs can be overlooked. Special teams will provide far better field position on both ends than last year, saving points and setting up a few scores.
It’s not just the addition of DeSean Jackson that makes this perhaps the NFL’s deepest receiving corps. Sure, Jackson is a needed deep threat alongside Pierre Garcon, but Andre Roberts is a solid No. 3, Santana Moss remains a valuable reserve and Aldrick Robinson and Ryan Grant are fine role players. The key is keeping Garcon and Jackson happy with fewer catches — even as losses mount.
Did the Redskins just shuffle deck chairs on the Titanic by adding guard Shawn Lauvao and moving Kory Lichtensteiger to center? Depth is improved, but these five guys — who are better suited to run blocking — are going to have to pass-protect longer. Griffin will need more time in a new scheme, but it’s debatable whether he’ll get it. The offense must adjust throughout the season.
Just two years ago, RGIII was offensive rookie of the year and ready to revolutionize the game. Then came an injury, a coaching spat and now a lackluster preseason in a new system as a pocket passer. Can Griffin win with his arm rather than his legs? Even more, will he be patient enough to try it? And will fans be patient, too? It may be at least midseason before Griffin feels comfortable.

THIRD SEASON (2008): The Titans quarterback injured his knee in the first game of the season, and when Young was healthy enough to return, coach Jeff Fisher stuck with veteran Kerry Collins for the rest of the year.
THIRD SEASON (1996): Brunell threw for an NFL-leading 4,367 yards and was named to his first of three Pro Bowls. He also had more rushing yards than any other quarterback in the league for the second straight season.
THIRD SEASON (2013): The former No. 1 pick made his second Pro Bowl after leading the Panthers to a 12-4 record and a firstround bye. Newton minimized mistakes, throwing 18 TDs to eight interceptions in the final 12 games — a stretch in which Carolina went 11-1.
REST OF CAREER: The lefthanded passer played into his 40s and led the Redskins to their last playoff victory in 2005. After rushing for 396 yards in 1996, Brunell never ran for more than 300 yards in a single season again.
REST OF CAREER: To be determined, but so far Griffin and Newton have followed similar paths. Both of them were top-two draft picks after winning the Heisman, both won rookie of the year, and then both failed to live up to high expectations in their second NFL seasons.
REST OF CAREER: Young reclaimed the starting role after the Titans began the 2009 season 0-6. He led the Titans to an 8-2 record the rest of the way, but Young never developed into a franchise quarterback and was out of the league after six seasons.

A new lease on furniture Renters fill their rented apartments with rented couches, lamps and beds

Andrew Hodge, an economist, balanced the extra cost of renting furniture with the time he’d save by not having to shop for it or sell it when he moved.
Andrew Hodge is a London School of Economics-trained scholar, so it’s no surprise that he thought through all the options when furnishing his new studio in Dupont Circle. He roughly calculated that the cost of leasing a couch, bed, tables and such for a year — $270 a month plus extra fees — would be roughly equivalent to buying those items at Ikea. And he had neither the time for that whirlwind shopping trip nor the desire to be stuck with the purchases in perpetuity. “I’d probably prefer to look for the furniture when I have time,” he says. He doesn’t plan to rent for the long-haul. “I would find it strange if people rented furniture sort of indefinitely, because that just couldn’t make financial sense,” says Hodge, an economist. But for the time being, it’s just right: “You have to be willing to pay [a] premium, and I was.” It turns out that he’s in good company. Hundreds of people in the D.C. area rent furnishings to fill their apartments. So far this year, Jessup, Md.-based AFR Furniture Rental, which provided Hodge’s items, has leased furniture to more than 500 customers in its Maryland, Virginia and D.C. territory, says regional sales manager Lauren Turner (301-362-4300, rentfurniture.com). Mall. To date, that leasing activity has been concentrated around the Navy Yard/Ballpark area and the U Street corridor, but other neighborhoods around the Capital Beltway are seeing activity. (CAPITAL BUSINESS)
Grocery stores are making the biggest splash, opening locations in recently built or planned projects. Since 2013, grocers have signed up for nine spaces — totaling more than 460,000 square feet — in apartment and office buildings either recently completed or currently under construction. apartments tend to be more expensive than unfurnished ones, she says. Plus they come with whatever the landlord has kitted them out with, such as electronics and things for the kitchen. For lawyer Tanner, those extras were unnecessary. He rented a package including a bed, two lamps, three bar stools, a pull-out

Trader Joe’s and Wal-Mart have all expanded as well.
Gyms and fitness stores are also rushing in to new construction projects in hopes of catering to a demographic that is younger and maintains an active lifestyle. Vida Fitness has a location in Navy Yard at the new Twelve12 rental complex, while Rockville’s PerSei Apartments will have a City Sports. Yoga studios and other alternative workout facilities have proliferated as well. Many locally owned restaurants, such as Tico at Louis at 14th apartments in the U Street corridor, as well as national chains such as Jimmy John’s, which recently opened locations at 2001 Clarendon Apartments and the Beacon Clarendon Apartments in Arlington, are also part of the trend. set them up in the apartment and come back to pick them up at the end of the lease. “[The delivery] happened while I was at work,” Hodge says. “It was very helpful.” A quick move was what led Justin Tanner to consider renting furniture. Tanner, a lawyer, was appointed to a government gig, and he had to get from Atlanta to D.C. — and find a place to live — within two weeks.
Brook Furniture Rental (877-285-7368, bfr.com) Brook offers preset room rentals and furniture rentals by the piece. Electronics and appliances are also available, as are a kit of kitchen essentials: dishes, cookware and utensils.

AROUND THE NFL
Peyton gets to see some old friends TED S. WARREN (AP)
GAME OF THE WEEK
Colts at Broncos 8:30 p.m., Sunday, NBC
Peyton Manning enters this season angry after suffering a 43-8 drubbing by the Seahawks in last year’s Super Bowl. And what better team to take out his anger against than one that gave up on him after 14 years?
Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg enters his start Friday with an 11-10 record and 3.49 ERA this season.
Strasburg lets the past go Nationals right-hander is at ease with himself 2 years after shutdown NATIONALS For Stephen Strasburg, it feels like so much time has passed and so much has changed. Two years after the Nationals shut down his 2012 season, he’s keeping his focus on the present, not the pennant race he missed, and not the postseason destined to come next month. On Friday night, Strasburg will climb the Nationals Park mound and face the Phillies in his 30th start of the season. The Nationals lead the Braves by seven games in the NL East,
similar to the positions they occupied in 2012, when Strasburg was forced to watch. Three days from now, it will be exactly two years ago. “As you get older, it becomes easier for you to relax out there,” Strasburg said Wednesday morning, sitting in the visitors dugout at Dodger Stadium. “I think I’ve become more comfortable with myself, where I’m at physically. You get out there, and you feel like there’s this overwhelming pressure to live up to the hype of being a No. 1 pick. It’s unfortunate, because there’s no learning curve. You have to go in there, and you’re expected to produce. If you don’t, everybody is saying you’re
UPSET SPECIAL
overhyped or overrated.” With his first three outs Friday night, Strasburg will surpass 183 innings for the season, uncharted territory for him. The most important starts of Strasburg’s career, the kind he did not get to make in 2012, will come in the next month. He will try to take them as they come and push the rest of it — what happened two years ago, what will come next — out of his head. “All you really can do is go out there and compete,” Strasburg said. “If you focus on that, pressure doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, you’re going to go out there with what you have that day. You got to find a way to win.”
Falcons over Saints
ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Johnny Manziel will play in Week 1
1 p.m., Sunday
New Orleans is one of the best home teams, going 8-0 last season at the Superdome. But the Saints were just 3-8 on the road, including losses to the Rams and Jets. Matt Ryan and the Falcons are ready for a bounce-back year.
PLAYER TO WATCH
LeSean McCoy, Eagles RB vs. Jaguars, 1 p.m., Sunday
Can LeSean McCoy be the next 2,000-yard rusher? Last year he led the league with 1,607 rushing yards, flourishing in Chip Kelly’s up-tempo offense. McCoy kicks off this season vs. the Jaguars’ lowly defense.
BOLD PREDICTION Browns at Steelers, 1 p.m., Sunday
The former Heisman winner lost the starting QB job to Brian Hoyer, who was equally as bad as Johnny Manziel during the preseason. If Hoyer struggles badly in the first half, why not turn to the rookie?
D.C. United players having career years D.C. United is on top of the Eastern Conference just a year after finishing at the bottom. An influx of new players and the improvements made by the others have combined to spark the dramatic turnaround. Here are three players — one new, two returning — who have experienced career years statistically. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR EXPRESS) Fabian Espindola
Luis Silva
Perry Kitchen
Brought over from New York in the offseason, the Argentine player has turned into an MVP candidate. Though Espindola missed two months with an injury, his nine goals are one shy of his career best, and his nine assists have already bested his previous high of seven.
Things have finally started to click for Silva in his fourth MLS season, as his partnership with Espindola has helped lead to eight goals and four assists. His previous career-best goal total was five in his rookie year, and his mark of five assists that same season is likely to fall as well.
His partnership with Davy Arnaud has given Kitchen, who was more of a strict defensive midfielder in his previous three seasons, freedom to roam forward. He has four goals and four assists in 2014 after previous career highs of one goal and four assists, set last season.
Former WR Donte Stallworth hired as national security writer for Huffington Post
STAT OF THE WEEK
48.8%
Completion percentage of Giants QB Eli Manning during five preseason games. In a new offensive system, New York set a goal for Manning to complete 70 percent of his passes this season. He was below 60 percent in 2012 and 2013.

Navy at Temple
JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
1 p.m., Saturday, Lincoln Financial Field STORYLINE: Getting Reynolds on track. Navy QB Keenan Reynolds ran 23 times for only 42 yards (24 came on one carry) in the Mids’ loss to Ohio State. For Navy to win, he needs to average better than 1.8 yards per rush. PLAYER TO WATCH: Navy RB Ryan Williams-Jenkins. He had 118 yards on seven carries last week, including a 67-yard scamper.
Richmond redshirt senior quarterbacks Michael Strauss, left, and Michael Rocco practice while both were still playing for Virginia in August 2012.
An unusual QB reunion Former Virginia passers Strauss and Rocco set to face old team COLLEGE FOOTBALL They may be on their second stint as teammates, but Michael Strauss and Michael Rocco admit they wouldn’t ordinarily be particularly close. Strauss is “that Miami lifestyle,” Rocco said of the Key Biscayne, Fla., native, and a prankster in the Richmond football team locker room. Rocco is just “a very conservative guy brought up differently than me,” Strauss admitted. But the two redshirt senior

signal callers have the same view on at least one topic: How poorly Virginia dealt with quarterbacks during their time together in Charlottesville. “It’s not an ideal situation over there, how they’ve handled their quarterbacks. I don’t think they’ve handled it the right way,” Strauss said last month. “Just some of the reasons for me not getting a chance or some other person just not getting on the field didn’t make any sense to me. … “I’d be lying to you if I said [Virginia] wasn’t the biggest game of my life right now.” It had been known for months that Saturday’s matchup between the Cavaliers and FCS
Richmond at Virginia 3:30 p.m., Sat., Scott Stadium STORYLINE: Virginia’s QB carousel continues. Starter Greyson Lambert, who threw two picks that were returned for TDs last week, was pulled after just one half. His replacement, Matt Johns, threw two TDs as the Cavaliers fell just short of a comeback win over No. 7 UCLA. Who’ll be the Cavs’ QB? PLAYER TO WATCH: Spiders QB Michael Strauss. Despite splitting time, he threw for 259 yards and three TDs in last week’s 55-10 win over Morehead State. (J.T.)
foe Richmond would feature the bizarre backdrop of two former Virginia quarterbacks, both now redshirt seniors, facing their former school. In a nod to their shared history, Richmond coach Danny Rocco, Michael’s uncle, will send both quarterbacks out for the opening coin toss after each requested to be game captains at Virginia, just the latest twist to the odd circumstances surrounding Saturday’s game. “They deserve it,” Danny Rocco said. “They both deserve that opportunity to go out there to midfield there in Charlottesville where they both started their career.” MARK GIANNOTTO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Last year, the Spartans ranked second in total defense and the Ducks were No. 2 in total offense. Michigan State faces Heisman hopeful Marcus Mariota, left.
With QB Everett Golson back, Notre Dame could be a playoff dark horse. But the Irish need to take care of business before facing six ranked teams in their last eight games.
USC ended a four-game skid against the Cardinal last year, knocking off a fifth-ranked Stanford squad 20-17. This matchup may come down to the teams’ highly regarded line play. (J.T.)

Maryland at South Florida 3:30 p.m., Sat., CBSSN, Raymond James Stadium STORYLINE: Stingy Terps defense. Maryland held FCS squad James Madison scoreless through the first three quarters in last week’s 52-7 win. Can they do it again, this time against an FBS foe? PLAYER TO WATCH: Terps QB C.J. Brown. Despite blowing out the Dukes, Brown was off-target for most of the game.
Virginia Tech at No. 8 Ohio State 8 p.m., Sat., ESPN, Ohio Stadium STORYLINE: Showing off young talent. Last week against overmatched William & Mary, the Hokies’ freshmen flourished, scoring all but six of Virginia Tech’s 34 points. PLAYER TO WATCH: Hokies RB Shai McKenzie. Three of his nine carries last week went for more than 10 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown run in the third. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

Summer’s best included, from left, “Obvious Child,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Life Itself.”
KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
Summer’s heroes: The quietest films saved the season Man, we had a good summer at the movies, didn’t we? And by “we” I mean “moviegoers,” not “studio execs,” since this summer’s box office actually trailed last year’s by 15 percent (which is kind of weird, because the top films of last summer — “Iron Man 3,” “Despicable Me 2” and “Man of Steel” — were all pretty weak. Then again, “Transformers:
Age of Extinction” was No. 2 this year, so I guess there’s no accounting for taste). This summer we had two great blockbusters in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which were Nos. 1 and 4, respectively, but the real jewels of this summer lay far from the explosions. In fact, you could have strung together a pretty good summer of movies without seeing a single superpower. “The Fault in Our Stars”
avoided being a cheap teen tearjerker thanks to a script that recognized that teenagers are people, not one-dimensional, sulking creatures with their selfies and their texting and their eye-rolling; moreover, Shailene Woodley really does deserve all the Oscar talk (I suspect she’ll get a Golden Globe nomination but get shut out by the Academy, since they don’t reward women who play sick women as often as they do men who play sick men). “Obvious Child” should have gotten more attention than it did for its story about an aimless 20-something who finds herself knocked up and, without hand-wringing, guilt or shame, chooses abortion. The Roger Ebert biodocumentary “Life Itself” was a lovely heartbreaker of a film that succeeded not only as a recap and celebration of
the movie critic’s public life, but as an examination of what it means to face one’s own mortality. “Boyhood” proved itself more than a gimmick; its 12year shooting schedule served the best coming-of-age story in movie history. “What If,” with Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, proved that rom-coms can be romantic, comedic AND smart, while “Love Is Strange” closed out the summer with a quiet telling of how lives lived in love still have their own challenges. So the box office was weak. That can’t be the only measure of the industry’s success, though (she said optimistically). The major studios didn’t pull in as much money as they did last summer — maybe because smaller studios kept most of the riches for themselves.
Summer’s top 10 This summer, robots, aliens and X-Men leaped in to rescue a struggling box office. Here are the season’s top-grossing films, according to boxofficemojo.com. 4. “X-Men: 1. “Guardians 2. “Transformers: 3. “Maleficent” $239M Days of Future of the Galaxy” Age of Extinction” Past” $233M $284M $244M
5. “Dawn of the 6. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” Planet of the $203M Apes” $206M
Tom Hanks, Lily Tomlin and Sting are among the 2014 Kennedy Center honorees
7. “Godzilla” $201M
8. “22 Jump Street” $191M
9. “How to Train 10. “Teenage Your Dragon 2” Mutant Ninja $174M Turtles” $168M
A mustachioed Kevin Kline, above, with a dandified accent and a habit of swashbuckling is a ringer for Errol Flynn in this subversive tale of his love affair with a 15-year-old girl in the late 1950s. The script plays his lover, played by Dakota Fanning, above left, as a hollow character with no personality. Ultimately, the movie, too, feels like an empty tale about the pitfalls of fame. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘Innocence’ PG-13, 96 minutes
The supernatural thriller, based on Jane Mendelsohn’s novel, follows Beckett (Sophie Curtis, above right), a teen at a school where the nurse (Kelly Reilly, above left) is cultivating her for some evil purpose that depends on our heroine’s virginity. But where “Twilight” made a sexual metaphor out of hunger for blood, “Innocence” barely creates a coherent point. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

OBITUARY Joan Rivers, the raucous, acidtongued comedian who crashed the male-dominated realm of latenight talk shows and turned Hollywood red carpets into danger zones for badly dressed celebrities, died Thursday. She was 81. Rivers was hospitalized last week after she went into cardiac arrest at a Manhattan doctor’s office following a routine procedure. Daughter Melissa Rivers said she died at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, surrounded by family and close friends. “My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh,” Melissa Rivers said. “Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.” Rivers — who made “Can we talk?” a trademark of her routines — never mellowed during her half-century-long career. She had insults ready for all races, and genders. She moved from longtime targets such as Elizabeth Taylor, of whom she said “her favorite food is seconds,” to newer foes such as Miley Cyrus, and continued to appear on stage and on TV into her 80s. With her red-carpet query “Who are you wearing?,” Rivers also patented pre-awards
Joan Rivers died Thursday after complications from surgery.
Lifetime of laughs In the early 1960s, Joan Rivers stormed into the male-dominated realm of comedy. (EXPRESS) 1965: Rivers appears on “The Tonight Show.” “You’re going to be a star,” Johnny Carson told her. 1983: Rivers is named permanent guest host for Carson on the show — the first female to do so. 1986: “The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers” debuts, alienating her from her friend, Carson. 1990: Rivers takes home a Daytime Emmy for her syndicated “The Joan Rivers Show.” 1994: Rivers earns a Tony nomination for starring in “Sally Marr … and Her Escorts,” which she co-wrote.
commentary. She slammed actors at the Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes for E! Entertainment and later on “Fashion Police.” No performer worked harder, was more resilient or tenacious. She never stopped writing, testing and fine-tuning her jokes. In the 1960s, comedy was a man’s game. But she worked her way up from local clubs in New York and in 1986 landed her own show, “The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers.” It was canceled after a year and she would declare she had been “raped” by Fox. Three months later, her husband, Edgar Rosenberg, who produced the show, committed suicide. It took two years to get her career going again, and then she didn’t stop. Rivers appeared on TV and Broadway, and released more albums and books, most recently “Diary of a Mad Diva.” In recent years, Rivers was a familiar face on TV shopping channel QVC, and won the reality show “Celebrity Apprentice.” In 2010, she was featured in the documentary “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.” In 2013, she pledged to work “forever.” “You never relax and say, ‘Well, here I am!’ ” she said. “I have never taken anything for granted.” LYNN ELBER (AP)

Olivia was born a month ago at the Swedish zoo as part of an international breeding program. She will spend two years with her mother, Krakunia, before being sent to another European zoo, according to BBC News.
“Princess Diana’s wedding dress is finally coming home.” SIMON PERRY AT PEOPLE.COM reports on the return of Diana’s David and Elizabeth Emanuel wedding dress to her sons, princes William and Harry, this month. Diana stipulated in her will that the dress and most of the 150 other objects from the “Diana: A Celebration” exhibition, which has been displayed around the world, be transferred to her sons after both of their 30th birthdays. (Prince Harry’s is Sept. 15.) According to The Telegraph, the lot also includes two diamond tiaras, 28 other dresses and gowns, photos and letters.

“The sweet-heat combo is universally appealing, but hot honey also had an added layer of depth thanks to the floral qualities of both the honey and the peppers used to infuse it.”
NOAH EVERETT AT BLOG.TWITPIC.COM announces that Twitter photo-sharing service Twitpic will be no more as of Sept. 25. According to Everett, who is a Twitpic co-founder, Twitter threatened to remove the company’s access to Twitter’s API if it did not abandon its trademark application. (APIs — or application programming interfaces — are used by developers to create products that work with other platforms.) A Twitter spokesperson said that Twitter has to protect its brand and trademarks, but was sad to see Twitpic go.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
