ART AT THE BORDER:

People on Wednesday attend the inauguration of an installation by French artist JR on the border with Mexico in Tecate, Calif. JR uses blackand-white photography in public places for what he calls “pervasive art.” This 70-foot image of a baby peers over a fence from the Mexican side of the border.

Seven live sharks and three dead ones — all 2 to 4 feet long — were seized from a pool in the basement of a home in New York’s Hudson Valley. State environmental officials said Wednesday that officers searching a home in LaGrangeville last month found a 15-foot-diameter, above-ground basement pool with seven live sandbar sharks, two dead leopard sharks and one dead hammerhead. No charges were reported as of Thursday. (AP)

An old episode of the British kids cartoon “Peppa Pig” has been banned in Australia for the second time. In the episode, Peppa and her brother are encouraged to play with spiders rather than fear them. But in Australia, that message is dangerous: Some spiders there are potentially lethal. The episode was inadvertently shown online in Australia in 2015, and popped up again last month on TV, the Mirror reported. (EXPRESS)

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins says his little nook at Redskins Park in Ashburn has enough space to keep his many notes and watch film.

“He wants somewhere to watch film ‘in private,’ ” coach Jay Gruden said with a grin. “He’s a very ‘private’ person.” And so between the binders full of papers and the need for a private corner to watch film, Cousins asked for a workspace he might call his own. The Redskins, who are already giving him $24 million this season, then made it $24 million plus one nook. “I said I’d like a place to kind of leave my stuff, and have notes and a whiteboard and thoughts

that I can have organized and old binders that I’ve kept and just have them stockpiled up,” Cousins said Wednesday. “And there really wasn’t a place to do that, that I could have access to at all times. So we found an old nook, is the best word I can think of.” There are no doors to his nook; he said they’re thinking about installing saloon doors, or “maybe hippie beads coming down from the ceiling.” He’s got his laptop there, and the video guys installed a monitor for watching film. He has a Jeff Foxworthy “You Might Be a Redneck If …” page-a-day calendar, a whiteboard and some of Michael Scott’s accoutrements from “The Office.” (“We’re kind of playing up the whole ‘Office’ thing,” Cousins said.) Cousins said he was “thrilled to talk about” his new nook, and he thanked the team’s secretary for getting the place dressed up for him. On Instagram, he wrote that he felt “like a kid on Christmas,” praising the space’s “nearly limitless shelving” and writing that he was “#blessed.” Because $24 million is nice and all. But a nook? A nook is priceless. “It’s really not an office,” Cousins said, “but it works for me.” DAN STEINBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ASHBURN, VA. Kirk Cousins just wanted a space of his own. The quarterback has a budding football library. He is a fastidious keeper of old notes and game plans, dating back to his rookie year with the Redskins and, even further, to his career at Michigan State. He has a large bin in the basement of his townhouse, stacked with binders, filled with old game plans, notes on defensive coordinators and other football ephemera. So he carried his papers back and forth from Redskins Park to his house. Then there was the issue of film. In Ashburn, the quarterbacks use the offensive staff room. “And when the offensive staff is meeting — like Monday morning after a game they get together to watch the tape of the game — that room’s not available, so I’m kind of homeless,” Cousins said. “So I go to the tight ends room if it’s open, or I go to the O-line room, just try to find an empty room and try to watch film.”

Suspect in 1975 killings poised to plead guilty

Explore the Big Questions

MONTGOMERY COUNTY A sex offender accused in the 1975 disappearance and murders of sisters Katherine and Sheila Lyon from a Wheaton shopping mall — one of Maryland’s most notorious crimes — is poised to enter a guilty plea, according to officials familiar with the negotiations. Lloyd Lee Welch, 60, charged two years ago, would become the first person convicted in the girls’ deaths, in a case that many feared would never be solved. Based on their recent work, detectives believe the sisters, ages 10 and 12, were sexually assaulted and killed before the remains of at least one of them were taken to rural Bedford County, Va., and burned. Welch, a former carnival worker, had been set to go to trial next week in Bedford, but

online court records show the trial has been “withdrawn.” Welch instead has agreed to a Welch plea agreement that calls for him to admit guilt in the Lyon sisters’ disappearance and face decades in prison, according to multiple people with knowledge of the case. The terms, which have been under negotiation for several weeks, also would resolve unrelated sexual assault cases in Prince William County, according to people familiar with the agreement. Any plea deal would not be final until Welch appeared before a judge and admitted guilt, and the judge signed off on it. He is set to appear in court in Bedford on Tuesday, and Welch

could change his mind before the agreement is final. If Welch is convicted, it will bring a measure of justice for a family that has lived with the tragedy for 42 years. The sisters vanished during a March 25, 1975, outing to the Wheaton Plaza shopping center, where they had walked to see friends, look at Easter decorations and have lunch. The crime went unsolved for decades before cold-case detectives homed in on Welch in 2013. He was indicted two years later. DAN MORSE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY Montgomery County is hiring more than a dozen new housing inspectors as part of a broad effort to crack down on unresponsive landlords and code violations and poor conditions in rental apartments. The initiative, which began earlier this summer, was touted Thursday by County Executive Isiah Leggett and other officials who gathered at Pooks Hill Tower and Court apartments in Bethesda to unveil a public campaign to educate low-income tenants about their rights. “Too often, we don’t hear from our tenants,” said Council

member Tom Hucker. “Tenants need to know that the county government is listening, that we’re on their side.” The county is posting ads on buses and in apartment complexes, stores and recreation centers that say renters can call a 311 hotline to file anonymous complaints against landlords or receive help with tenant

advocacy and conflict mediation. The ads also tell tenants that landlords cannot evict them for taking such actions. About one-third of the county’s nearly 1 million residents rent their homes, according to census data. Housing is increasingly expensive in the jurisdiction, which is Maryland’s largest, and affordable options are increasingly scarce. After passing legislation last year to improve apartment protections, the county is requiring all multi-family buildings in the county to be inspected for code violations over the next two years. The legislation gained momentum after an explosion and fire last year at the Flower Branch Apartments in Silver Spring killed seven people and left 100 homeless. JOSH HICKS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The anti-Trump posters around D.C. recall political art from the 1940s.

Group hangs 4,000 anti-Trump fliers District campaign uses WWII Nazi imagery to protest White House THE DISTRICT Last year, after Donald Trump’s election win, white nationalist posters with fascist imagery began appearing on campuses. Now, a month after a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, a progressive group is trying to seize these tools of white nationalism and use them against the Trump White House, distributing 4,000 anti-Nazi posters around the nation’s capital. They are not subtle. One features Trump in boxer shorts branded with swastikas — a version of a famous poster of Adolf Hitler with his pants down created on the eve of World War II, as WAMU pointed out. Another

shows Uncle Sam warning that there is “No room for racists!” “We need to be more aggressive in our approach,” said Arianna Jones, creator of Project Scholl, the group that developed the posters. “We need to find ways that will make people smile in the midst of all of this.” A spokeswoman for D.C. police said they had not received complaints about the posters. They were designed by L.A.based artist Robert Russell, who for inspiration looked to World War II-era poster art as well as artists like Shepard Fairey, creator of the iconic Obama “Hope” image, and Robbie Conal. Nuance was not part of the program. “This is an all-hands-on-deck moment where I have to sit down and do something explicit,” Russell said. JUSTIN WM. MOYER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Repealing the debt ceiling? Trump, Schumer agree to pursue a plan to end process to raise limit POLITICS President Trump and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., have agreed to pursue a deal that would permanently remove the requirement that Congress repeatedly raise the debt ceiling, three people familiar with the decision said. Trump and Schumer discussed the idea Wednesday during an Oval Office meeting. The two, along with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to work together over the next several months to try to finalize a plan, which would

need to be approved by Congress. One of the people familiar with the plan described it as a “gentlemen’s agreement.” Senate Democrats hope they will be able to finalize an arrangement with Trump by December. On Thursday, Trump was asked by a reporter at the White House about abolishing the congressional process for raising the debt ceiling. “There are lots of good reasons to do that,” Trump replied. “For many years, people have been talking about getting rid of [the] debt ceiling altogether.” Trump also confirmed the issue was discussed during his meeting with congressional leaders Wednesday. the meeting said Vice President Mike Pence is open to changes he considers in line with the “Gephardt Rule” — a parliamentary rule making it easier

to tie raising the debt ceiling with Congress passing a budget. The deal comes after Trump sided with Democratic leaders Wednesday on a plan to temporarily raise the debt ceiling and fund hurricane relief, rejecting a Republican plan. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Thursday that he opposes scrapping the debt-limit process. “I think there’s a legitimate role for the power of the purse of the Article 1 powers, and that’s something we defend here in Congress,” he said. Article 1 gives Congress the authority to write and pass legislation and appropriate government money.

CULTURE “Sweepers” — people who enter contests and sweepstakes as a hobby — know how to make their own luck. They do it by entering a lot. Volume is the key. Carolyn Wilman of Ontario, Canada, is a sweeper and author of “How to Win Cash, Cars, Trips and More.” She estimates that she’s won more than a quarter of a million dollars worth of prizes, including a year’s worth of pizza and a two-week trip to Europe. “I recommend spending one to two hours a day entering contests and sweepstakes,” Wilman said. “That’s enough to win plenty, but not so much you cut into work, family time and other obligations.” Wilman estimates she submits about 36,000 entries a year and wins 1 percent of them. To enter in such volume, Wilman and other sweepers leverage technology. They find out about hundreds of available sweepstakes and contests from websites like Sweepstakes Advantage. Wilman then uses auto-complete software to enter, cutting her contest entry time in half. People often call Wilman and others “professional sweepers,” because they put so much time, technology and strategy into it, but she rejects that label. “I wish I could earn my living winning sweepstakes,” Wilman said. “But I couldn’t pay my rent if I had to rely on prizes. Winning just enhances my life.” ELISABETH LEAMY (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Fla. awaits Irma’s wrath State prepares to take a painful hit from storm that’s left at least 10 dead in Caribbean

Hurricane Irma destroyed buildings and uprooted trees in St. Martin.

HURRICANE IRMA Caribbean islands pummeled by Hurricane Irma began to grapple with the monster storm’s toll on Thursday, while nervous residents of South Florida packed highways, seeking safer ground amid forecasts warning that Irma posed an increasing threat to the region. As the storm charged closer to the U.S. mainland, the National Hurricane Center issued hurricane watches Thursday morning for the Florida peninsula from Jupiter Inlet southward and around the peninsula to Bonita Beach, including the Florida Keys. A storm-surge watch was issued for the same area of Florida because of the potential for water to rise well above normally dry land. “It has become more likely that Irma will make landfall in southern Florida as a dangerous major hurricane, and bring life-threatening storm surge and wind impacts to much of the state,” the Hurricane Center said late afternoon Thursday. Irma’s Category 5 force pinwheeled through the Caribbean, leaving a wake of leveled neighborhoods, ravaged seafronts and at least 10 dead, according to officials and news reports. By Thursday morning, as Irma’s eye was moving near the island of Hispaniola, aid workers in Haiti were preparing for yet another potential disaster. School was canceled across the country. In some remote towns, word to take shelter was being spread largely via local officials with bullhorns. Irma’s strong winds and torrential rains pummeled the

Dominican Republic on Thursday. Among the towns pounded by the storm were Cabarete and Sosua, part of the Puerto Plata region. More than 5,500 people in the country were evacuated in the run-up to the storm, officials said. The president of the territorial council, Daniel Gibbs, told Radio Caraibes International that St. Martin is “95 percent destroyed.” On the islands of Barbuda and Anguilla, meanwhile, at least one death was reported on each. On Puerto Rico, at least three deaths were blamed on the hurricane, according to a statement from

Aid to islands French, British and Dutch military authorities rushed aid to Caribbean islands on Thursday after Hurricane Irma left at least 10 dead and thousands homeless. France said 100,000 food rations were sent to St. Barts and St. Martin. Two Dutch navy ships were in St. Martin with vital supplies and two Dutch military aircraft were being sent the island of Curacao and on to St. Martin to deliver food and water. Britain was sending hundreds of troops and the Royal Navy flagship HMS Ocean to Anguilla, Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands. (AP)

Hurricane Katia prompts a hurricane warning in Mexico’s Veracruz state

Gov. Ricardo Rossello Nevares. The death toll fluctuated Thursday as officials released, then revised, the number of fatalities. Irma’s expected path takes aim at Florida, including the ribbon of cities, dense suburbs and swampland that are home to more than 6 million people from Palm Beach to Miami-Dade counties. Increasing evacuations were getting underway across South Florida. On Thursday, Broward County began to evacuate people from the area along the Atlantic. Miami-Dade County, which had announced evacuations on Wednesday, expanded the order on Thursday to include more people across the coastal portion of the county. Forecasts have warned that South Florida could take a painful hit, but it is unclear where the center of the storm will be. “The wild card here is the turn,” Mark DeMaria, acting deputy director of the Hurricane Center, said. “Anytime a hurricane makes a turn it introduces uncertainty. But 50 miles onshore versus right off the coast makes a huge difference in impact.” Just last month, Florida marked the 25th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which made landfall as a Category 5 monster. That storm, along with the recent devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey in Texas, has affected the warnings issued by Florida officials. “This storm is bigger, faster and stronger than Hurricane Andrew,” Rick Scott, the Florida governor, said Wednesday. “Do not sit and wait for the storm to come,” he said. “It is extremely dangerous and deadly and will cause devastation. Get prepared right now.” JOEL ACHENBACH AND MARK BERMAN (THE WASINGTON POST)

The breach, which the company said began in May, was discovered in July. Though Equifax said that the “core database” was not penetrated, the attackers did gain access to a wide range of data for what appears to be a majority of American adults and some British and Canadian consumers as well. Social Security numbers and birthdates are particularly sensitive data, giving those who possess them the ingredients for identity fraud and other crimes. Equifax said that it also lost control of an unspecified number of driver’s licenses, along with the credit card numbers for 209,000 consumers and credit dispute documents for 182,000 others. “This has the potential to be a very harmful breach,” said Beth Givens, executive director of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. Equifax said it was alerting those who were affected by mail and set up a website, equifaxsecurity2017.com, for consumers to check whether they were affected. It will offer a year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to those affected. CRAIG TIMBERG

POLITICS President Trump’s eldest son told a Senate committee Thursday he was open to receiving information about Hillary Clinton’s “fitness, character or qualifications” in a meeting with a Russian lawyer last year. However, Donald Trump Jr. insisted that neither he nor anyone else he knows colluded with any foreign government during the presidential campaign. His description of a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower, delivered in an opening statement at the outset of a closed-door Senate Judiciary Committee staff interview, provided his most

detailed account of an encounter that has attracted the attention of congressional investigators and special counsel Robert Mueller. It is also the first known instance of Trump Jr. giving his version of the meeting in a setting that could expose him to legal jeopardy. It’s a crime to lie to Congress. Multiple committees and Mueller’s team of prosecutors are investigating whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia to influence the outcome of the election. A grand jury used by Mueller has already heard testimony about the meeting, which besides Trump Jr. included the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and then-campaign chairman, Paul Manafort. Trump Jr. spoke to the committee for about five hours.

Donald Trump Jr. testified behind closed doors Thursday to the Senate Judiciary Committee staff.

In Thursday’s prepared remarks, Trump Jr. sought to explain emails he released two months ago that showed him agreeing to the meeting, which

had been described as part of a Russian government effort to help his father’s campaign. In his statement, he said he was skeptical of the outreach by music publicist Rob Goldstone, who said he had information that could be damaging to Clinton. But Trump Jr. said he thought he “should listen to what Rob and his colleagues had to say.” At one point, Trump Jr. had told Goldstone, “If it’s what you say I love it especially in the summer.” Trump Jr. said Thursday that that was “simply a colloquial way of saying that I appreciated Rob’s gesture.” Trump Jr. also said he met Goldstone through the family of Aras Agalarov, the Trump Organization’s partner on the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. Outlook: Not so good The Redskins came out of nowhere to go 9-7 and win the NFC East in 2015, but then regressed and missed the playoffs at 8-7-1 last

year. So it’s hard to know what to expect out of the team in 2017. Expectations aren’t as low as they were two years ago, when experts ranked the Redskins at or near the bottom of their preseason power rankings, and they’re not as high as last year, when most pundits predicted Washington would win the division. This year, Washington is in the bottom half of most power rankings. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Overall: 21st | NFC East: 4th “Washington’s best-case scenario is [similar to] how it finished last season,” Kenneth Arthur writes. “The worst-case scenario has it rebuilding and moving on from Cousins.”

Bleacher Report Overall: 16th | NFC East: 3rd Chris Simms says he is “starting to have some real concerns about the offense,” but not enough to rank the Redskins below the Eagles.

The Washington Post Overall: 17th | NFC East: 4th “The firing of Scot McCloughan as GM has given way to what feels like an unsettled season, given the uncertainty surrounding the future of two-time franchise-tagged QB Kirk Cousins,” Mark Maske writes. “Even so, the Redskins could be pretty good ... CBS Overall: 20th | NFC East: 4th “Kirk Cousins is playing for his future, but he did not have a good preseason,” Pete Prisco writes.

The Ringer Overall: 20th | NFC East: 4th Robert Mays thinks that if Terrelle Pryor Sr. and Josh Doctson help this team overcome the losses of DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, “Washington should again feature a top-tier offense. Pressure’s on

Money, family, respect: Kirk Cousins has a lot on his plate. Is he equipped to deal with the unique stresses of the NFL?

COVER STORY Kirk Cousins has every reason to feel slighted. But if he’s harboring frustration, he’s far too savvy a political operator to let the emotions show. For two years, the Redskins’ starting quarterback has proven himself on the field, setting consecutive franchise records for single-season passing yardage

and leading Washington to its first back-to-back winning seasons in a quarter century. During the same two years, Cousins has been the main player in ongoing contract drama that has supplied fuel for Washington’s voracious media market. But money is just one potential stressor for Cousins. He and his wife have their first child, a son,

due this month. He’s still looking for a playoff win, still hoping to shake a reputation as a system quarterback who folds in the clutch, as he did with a seasonending interception against the New York Giants last year. Is Cousins equipped to deal with these pressures? He has in the past, and teammates and one expert on the psyche of athletes

say that he is. All of the financial details between the Redskins and their quarterback have been reported ad nauseam. At this point, your mail carrier could probably explain the difference between the non-exclusive franchise tag and the transition tag. What remains unclear is how the organization’s reluctance to commit long-term to Cousins affects the quarterback who always says the right thing and who remains elusive on the subject of pressure. “We have to prove ourselves every year anyway,” Cousins recently told The Washington Post, repeating a familiar theme for anyone who’s listened to him talk about the one-year franchise tag. “People say there’s a lot of pressure on me now, but wouldn’t there be pressure if I’d signed a contract for a crazy number and thrown an interception?” So this season — Cousins’ last before he negotiates on the open market or triggers an unprecedented third franchise tag at a ludicrous price of $34 million — doesn’t just come with the pressure and potential to lock up a long-term deal for himself. It’s also an opportunity to carry the baton for all NFL players in their quest to secure more guaranteed money. Outwardly, Cousins remains calm. He’s even said he doesn’t mind team president Bruce Allen calling him “Kurt” on-camera, including when the team aired out Cousins’ role in stalled negotiations on the day the deadline passed to agree to a new contract. By not presenting a counter-offer to Washington, as the team has publicized, Cousins also opened himself up to a new level of scrutiny from the fans. Dealing with financial insecurity and doubters inside and outside of the organization doesn’t seem to bother Cousins, who turned 29 in August. He opened training camp saying he was “in a good place.” At this point in his career, he’s used to betting on himself to play well. “It has worked in the past, and

NFL power rankings continued: 7. Cowboys (13-3 in 2016); 8. Giants (11-5); 9. Chiefs (12-4); 10. Texans (9-7); 11. Lions (9-7); 12. Broncos (9-7) 13. Bengals (6-9-1); 14. Eagles (7-9)

hopefully it can work moving forward,” Cousins said at the time. Running back Chris Thompson said Cousins looks more comfortable than ever directing the huddle. “He doesn’t seem like he’s stressing so much,” Thompson said, “and he’s really having fun with the game.” While Cousins is the highestprofile player on the Redskins to be playing on the last year of his contract, he’s hardly alone. Eight others on the active roster, including wide receiver Terrelle Pryor Sr. and inside linebacker Zach Brown, are playing on oneyear deals. Thompson also understands the stress Cousins and the others are going through. Before signing a two-year extension this week, he was looking at a oneyear deal under a $2.7 million tender he signed as a restricted free agent. “Every year that I’ve been in the NFL, I’ve stressed myself out as far as like thinking about contracts, or what if this doesn’t work out, then what am I gonna do and all that,” Thompson said. It wasn’t until he “spent a lot of time alone” in introspection this year that Thompson learned to stop fixating on contracts. According to Thompson, half of the mental battle in the NFL is having supportive people in place around you, which he said Cousins has. In his own day-today battle to keep his mind from drifting into negative hypotheticals, Thompson still leans on a resource from college, his former “mental conditioning” coach — and someone who’s also familiar with Cousins’ mindset. Trevor Moawad has worked with the Seminoles since Jimbo Fisher was promoted to head coach in 2009. Moawad, who has a master’s degree in education and avoids the term sports psychologist, has also worked for Nick Saban’s Alabama teams from 2007 to 2016, for the Miami Dolphins in 2006 and for the Jacksonville Jaguars for eight years starting in 2001.

ALEX BRANDON (AP)

Kirk Cousins has always maintained he’s comfortable on a one-year deal.

Through 17 years of working with football players, he’s also seen how stress can become overwhelming in the pros. “It might be new coaches. It might be a contract year. It might be competition at my position. It might be divorce. It might be injury,” Moawad said. “All of those things take psychological muscle.” In 2012, Moawad was working with NFL draft prospects at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and two young quarterbacks commanded his attention: Cousins and Russell Wilson. “Both Russell and Kirk were like miniature CEOs of IBM,” Moawad said, referring to how the developing pros were so meticulous about their draft prep and asked all the right questions. Moawad remembers being particularly impressed that Cousins scripted the plays for his pro day. Wilson, who still works with Moawad, has been vocal about positive thinking — he recently told The Post he wants to play

in the NFL for 25 years . But Moawad said it’s paramount for NFL quarterbacks, and especially Cousins, to forge a neutral mindset. “Neutral thinking” is recognizing that whether things are clicking or going south, both will eventually happen, so you better be prepared to plan for both

and constantly remind yourself that the negative parts of the job — like grinding through a Wednesday practice — are all part of the larger goal. When Moawad talks about neutral thinking as it relates to Cousins, he sounds like he’s repeating a transcript from one of the quarterback’s news conferences. “Neutral thinking is, ‘This is my reality, I’m on a one-year deal, but throughout football most guys are on a one-year deal. What are the things that I can do to allow me to play really good football?’” Moawad said. For Cousins, those things have included scheduling his life down to 15-minute increments, showing off on Instagram his very own “QB nook” — a tiny desk at Redskins Park for him to bury himself in film study — and following Wilson, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers in removing a bevy of civilian staples from his diet. So in 2017, with the near future still unsettled, Cousins will again try to exceed expectations. And Moawad, the man tasked with constructing and maintaining athletes’ self-esteem, thinks Cousins has the mental makeup and the support system to do it. “I think he’s wired exactly the right way to play out a one-year deal,” Moawad said. There’s another final component to Cousins’ composure: his deep Christian faith. Speaking to a crowd at Liberty University last week, Cousins said God “likes to use one-year contracts” to test his faith, and Cousins didn’t feel at peace accepting a new deal in part for that reason. Mike McCartney, Cousins’ agent, said that the quarterback has established himself for two years, doesn’t worry about money and is truly comfortable playing on a one-year deal. “It’s faith-based,” McCartney told Express over the phone. “He truly has belief and confidence that God’s got his future no matter what contract he’s under.” GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Can they fill the holes? Redskins are stacked at high-profile positions but still questionable in other spots

STRONG SAFETY

NO. 2 CORNERBACK

The Redskins finally seemed to have a stable safety tandem in place with the addition of free safety D.J. Swearinger (PFF: 87.0; No. 9 S) and the move to put Su’a Cravens in the secondary. But Cravens went on leave to contemplate retirement, leaving little-used DeShazor Everett to step up.

Bashaud Breeland (PFF: 48.0; No. 83 CB) posted a career-high three interceptions last year, but he was picked on a lot. Kendall Fuller has earned good reports from training camp, but the Redskins need him to play nickel back. Rookie Fabian Moreau will get chances to play. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

The good

The bad

The potentially ugly

The Redskins are strong at the most important positions in football.

These areas could be season-long concerns for the Redskins.

These positions could swing Washington’s season in either direction.

QUARTERBACK

DEFENSIVE LINE

WIDE RECEIVER

Whether or not you think Kirk Cousins possesses the clutch gene, he’s proven he can put up gaudy numbers. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Cousins led the NFL last year with 3,005 yards through the air, which don’t include yards after the catch. His PFF grade in 2016 was 85.4 out of 100 (ninth among QBs).

This group was a weakness last year, and the Redskins did little to fix it. Ziggy Hood (PFF: 45.0; No. 116 DT) is a natural end forced to play nose tackle after a season-ending leg injury to Phil Taylor. Stacy McGee (PFF: 81.8; No. 63 DT) was a solid addition in free agency but may not be an upgrade over Chris Baker, who left for Tampa Bay. First-round pick Jonathan Allen (PFF grade at Alabama: 92.1) may need time to develop.

How long will it take for Terrelle Pryor Sr. (PFF: 79.7; No. 31 WR) to get in rhythm with Cousins? Pryor is a freak, but it doesn’t matter how big (6 feet 4) or fast he is if he’s nowhere near the ball. We haven’t seen enough of second-year wideout Josh Doctson to know if he can replace DeSean Jackson’s deep speed or if he’s a lock for the weekly injury report. Jamison Crowder (PFF: 71.8; No. 69 WR) is dependable from the slot but may be called upon to line up outside.

LEFT TACKLE He had a four-game ban for violating the NFL substance abuse policy, but Trent Williams was PFF’s top-rated left tackle (92.3) last year, allowing just 16 QB pressures in 12 games.

EDGE RUSHER Ryan Kerrigan (PFF: 81.8; No. 18 DE/OLB) has posted 34 sacks in the past three seasons and is looking forward to playing in an aggressive scheme under former outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky: “I really believe in his defense. ... If we execute it, the scheme works,” Kerrigan told Express at training camp.

NO. 1 CORNERBACK Josh Norman (PFF: 81.0; No. 24 CB) committed the most penalties of anyone in the league last year, but he brings swagger to a unit in need of some edge and is a physical cover man.

GUARD Shawn Lauvao (PFF: 46.4; No. 60 G) can be a powerful run blocker at times but too often gets lost in pass protection. Brandon Scherff (PFF: 81.7; No. 17 G) belongs on the good list based on his play last year, but reports coming out of training camp and the preseason have indicated he could take a step back from his first Pro Bowl season.

BOOKEND EDGE RUSHER Preston Smith (PFF: 68.4; No. 66 DE/OLB) went through a sophomore slump last year with just 4.5 sacks. Junior Galette has already achieved a lot by making it through the preseason healthy after two straight Achilles tears. Trent Murphy is out for the year with a torn ACL. Can anyone emerge as a complementary threat to Kerrigan?

ANALYSIS With Sean McVay leaving to coach the Rams, Matt Cavanaugh has been promoted to offensive coordinator, and Jay Gruden has reclaimed Washington’s playcalling duties. But don’t expect drastic changes to the offense. During four seasons calling plays for the Bengals (2011-13) and Redskins (2014), Gruden averaged 58 percent passing plays to 42 percent running plays — which is right on par with the 2016 league average. While the Redskins were slightly more pass-happy last season — throwing it more than 62 percent of the time — McVay’s pass-run distribution in 2015 was about the same as Gruden’s four-year average. As for run production, Gruden and McVay have been eerily similar. In four seasons, Grudenled offenses have ranked 18th or 19th in the NFL in rushing yards per game. In McVay’s two seasons calling plays for Washington, the Redskins ranked 20th and 21st in rushing. There is one big difference when comparing Gruden to McVay. Gruden’s best passing season as a play-caller was when the Bengals averaged 258.5 yards per game in 2013, eighthbest in the NFL. With McVay last year, the Redskins were second in the NFL in passing yards per game at 297.4. McVay was still running Gruden’s offense, so maybe Gruden can replicate those totals as a play-caller.

NFL power rankings continued: 24. Colts (8-8 in 2016); 25. Jags (3-13); 26. Saints (7-9); 27. Rams (4-12); 28. Bears (3-13); 29. 49ers (2-14); 30. Bills (7-9); 31. Browns (1-15); 32. Jets (5-11)

No. 1 pick Garrett will miss opener

RELIGIOUS Services Directory ANNOUNCEMENTS

Browns defensive end could be out for weeks with high ankle sprain

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dear JASON MILLER (GETTY IMAGES)

NFL Myles Garrett’s NFL debut for the Browns won’t come for weeks. The top overall pick in this year’s draft will miss Sunday’s home opener against Pittsburgh and possibly a few more games after severely spraining his right ankle during practice. A teammate fell on the back of his leg during a drill Wednesday. An MRI revealed that Garrett, a defensive end, has a high ankle sprain, an injury that typically takes several weeks to heal. His status will be updated in a “couple of weeks,” the team said. That means he will sit out against the Steelers and likely at least the following week at Indianapolis. Garrett’s loss is another blow for the beleaguered Browns, who went 1-15 last season and have had their share of costly injuries. Quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown were hurt early last season. Wide receiver Corey Coleman, a first-round pick, missed six games with a broken hand, and Cleveland lost both starting guards to foot injuries. This is the second time Garrett has been hurt as a pro, and

those setbacks came after he was limited during his junior year at Texas A&M by a badly sprained left ankle. Garrett suffered a lateral sprain to his left foot in minicamp but recovered in time for the start of training camp. The Browns eased him into practices, but it wasn’t long before Garrett was dazzling coaches and teammates with his speed and strength. Garrett also impressed with his humility and work ethic, staying after practice to run wind sprints to build stamina. Before Wednesday, Garrett had been pointing to the opener and promised to sack Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger. TOM WITHERS (AP)

NFL to share ball data The NFL will be able to know the speed, location and even the rotation of footballs this season because of new technology announced Thursday. For fans, that will mean even more stats. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags will be in footballs used in every NFL game this season after being tested last year. (AP) U.S. Open: Women’s semis ended after Express’ deadline

Front-loaded college football slate continues In the first week of college football, fans were treated to a smorgasbord of competitive games, including No. 1 Alabama’s win over then-No. 3 FSU and Tennessee’s double-overtime victory over Georgia Tech. This weekend’s schedule should keep the excitement coming. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS) No. 13 Auburn at No. 3 Clemson 7 p.m. Saturday, ESPN

Defending national champion Clemson is on upset alert. Clemson escaped Auburn last year with a 19-13 road win. Auburn running back Kamryn Pettway (122.4-yard rushing average in 2016) returns from suspension.

No. 14 Stanford at No. 6 Southern Cal 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Fox

Quarterback Sam Darnold and the Trojans needed a 28-point fourth quarter to beat Western Michigan last week. Stanford is looking for its fourth straight win over its Pac-12 rival.

No. 5 Oklahoma at No. 2 Ohio State 7:30 p.m. Saturday, ABC

Buckeyes freshman J.K. Dobbins ran for 181 yards in his debut at Indiana last week. Heisman contender Baker Mayfield and the Sooners would like to avenge last year’s 45-24 loss in Norman.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Try harder: You don’t know what you’re dismissing I will not go see “It.” This is not a value judgment of “It.” I will not see “It” because it is a horror movie and I know it will scare the crap out of me, like most horror movies do. It is, of course, unfair to dismiss movies by genre. Saying, “I don’t like musicals” means you’re dismissing a wide swath of movies. Think about it: If you don’t like musicals, you don’t like “The Wizard of Oz,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” and nearly every animated movie Disney has ever made. When a genre includes both “Cabaret” and “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut,” dismissing it entirely is akin to saying, “I don’t like potatoes.” You might not

like mashed potatoes (what is wrong with you?), but potatoes come in so many forms that somehow, somewhere, there is a potato for you. The musical genre isn’t the only one that’s dismissed — plenty of people say they don’t like Westerns, don’t like action movies, don’t like foreign films, and on and on. I feel comfortable saying, though, that one of the most maligned categories is the romantic comedy. Which brings us to “Home Again.” “Home Again” is certainly marketed as a rom-com, and that’s not entirely off-base. Alice (Reese Witherspoon) is a 40-year-old woman who returns to her (dead) father’s palatial house in L.A. after leaving her New York-based husband (Michael Sheen).

HBO to end “Veep” after upcoming Season 7, airing in 2018

Through a set of drunken circumstances, she invites three struggling filmmakers (Nat Wolff, Jon Rudnitsky and Pico Alexander) to live in her guesthouse. The four become an ad hoc family, with the men pitching in with home repairs and driving her two daughters to various lessons, and with Alexander’s (much younger) Harry hooking up with Alice pretty regularly. So pretty normal rom-com stuff, save that the woman is over 27 and there are four guys — including her husband — in the mix, all of whom have some sort of feelings for Alice. Here’s the thing, though: “Home Again” isn’t exactly a rom-com. Its end goal isn’t necessarily a man and a woman finding each other, but

‘Home Again’ (PG-13, 96 min.) DIRECTOR: Hallie Meyers-Shyer STARS: Reese Witherspoon, Pico Alexander, Nat Wolff, Jon Rudnitsky IN A NUTSHELL: A 40-year-old finds new romance when three young guys move into her guesthouse. (No, that’s not a euphemism.)

a woman finding and redefining herself. Skipping “Home Again” because you “don’t like romantic comedies” will only deny you a lively, funny, surprisingly touching film. So back to “It.” Admittedly, I’m not seeing it for the worst of reasons: I don’t like horror films. Except when I do. Not the gory, jump-scare-filled ones, but I really liked “The Cabin in the Woods” and “The Others” (which admittedly is more suspense) and “Psycho.” I avoided “Get Out,” but it’s next on my list to watch. And I might even see “It” one day. Between my fingers. By not giving a film a try simply because of its genre, you might deprive yourself of something you end up loving. Remember that not all musicals are cheesy, not all horror films are terrifying, not all rom-coms are mindless and not all potatoes are mashed. Just as you might not like everything in a genre (I love musicals but hate “Mamma Mia!”), you might find a hidden treasure if you take a chance — and maybe a tiny little bite. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

Though critics have called “Beach Rats” a coming-ofage tale, this drama about a gay Brooklyn teenager struggling to accept his homosexuality is more a pre-coming-of-age tale. The protagonist sets out on a path toward a dangerous reckoning with himself and who he will become. Though the film takes us up to the threshold of that accounting, it doesn’t have the nerve to cross it. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Viceroy’s House’ Unrated, 106 min.

“Viceroy’s House” is a bit like “Downton Abbey,” only set in Delhi, against the backdrop of India’s independence from English colonial rule. A subplot involves a love triangle, but it’s not as interesting as all the political maneuvering. The film makes sense of a complex time in history, but is better as a reminder that truth can be more affecting than fiction. STEPHANIE MERRY (TWP)

Netflix picks up “Ratched,” Ryan Murphy’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” prequel series, starring Sarah Paulson

‘It’ is a waking nightmare FILM REVIEW There’s a reason that Stephen King’s 1986 novel about a demonic clown who terrorizes a group of children is called “It” and not “Him.” In King’s tale, which is now a feature film, it’s not the bogeyman, but fear itself that haunts its pages. There’s a monster in the movie — Pennywise the Dancing Clown — but he (or, rather, it) is never one thing, taking on the form of whatever scares you the most. Set in 1989 in the town of Derry, Maine, the story takes place against a backdrop of dismal, blue-collar misery. Although the protagonists are a group of innocent teenagers, the grown-up world they bump up against is one of economic decline, hopelessness and moral rot. If the film is trying to suggest that everyday life is much scarier than the literal monsters that Hollywood likes to dream up, that would make for one heck of a subtext.

‘It’ (R, 135 min.) DIRECTOR: Andy Muschietti STARS: Bill Skarsgard, Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis IN A NUTSHELL: When kids in their town begin to go missing, a group of other kids team up to find the monstrous clown who got them.

The inciting action of the story is the disappearance of Georgie (Jackson Robert Scott), a boy who vanishes down a storm drain in the first 10 minutes after encountering Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard). Georgie’s older brother (Jaeden Lieberher) and six of his pals set out to look for him. The members of the search party are initially more easily recognized as shorthand types than as individuals. There’s the fat kid (Jeremy Ray Taylor); the black kid (Chosen Jacobs); the Jewish kid (Wyatt Oleff); the asthmatic

NEW LINE CINEMA

The Stephen King adaptation features a monster who knows just how to scare each one of us weakling (Jack Dylan Grazer); the smart mouth (Finn Wolfhard); and the girl (Sophia Lillis). To its credit, the screenplay eventually fleshes out these stock characters nicely. By the end, they feel whole, well-rounded, worthy of our sympathy and concern. “It” culls tropes from the catalogue of movie horror, including an abandoned house, a well, a flooded cellar, a possessed bathroom sink, zombies, paintings that come to life and ominous messages written in blood. These aren’t just tricks out of a director’s toolbox of cliches, but an arsenal that comes from the clown himself, who tailors his scares to each victim’s deepest fear. Of course, all this may or may not be real, as the kids have to figure out. The idea of an entity that doesn’t just feed on fear, but that carefully curates it, may not be new. It is, however — like “It” itself — surprisingly effective. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

EXPECTED RELEASE: Nov. 3

SUMMARY: Celebrate Christmas in November with “Daddy’s Home 2: The Sequel That Nobody Asked For.” Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell star as two stepfathers who “co-dad” their various spawn. Then THEIR dads (Mel Gibson and John Lithgow) arrive for Christmas and people fall down a lot and also there’s John Cena. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: It’s another entry in the Christmas in November Sequelganza. The women from the first movie have to face the fact that THEIR moms are coming for Christmas. And no one wants that! They, of course, cope like normal people do — by drinking wayyy more than is recommended. Which is exactly the amount that’s necessary. K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

In the latest issue of Marie Claire UK, Shailene Woodley discussed her arrest this year at a Standing Rock protest. The actress said she disconnected her cellphone for three months following the arrest as she dealt with the trauma. She noted that she’s been out of the loop: When asked about her “The Descendants” co-star George Clooney and wife Amal having recently welcomed twins, Woodley exclaimed, “They did? That’s amazing. I don’t know what’s going on.”

Joaquin Phoenix opened up about his personal life in an interview with The New York Times’ T magazine, including revealing that he lives with girlfriend Rooney Mara. The two previously appeared in 2013’s “Her” and reconnected on the set of the upcoming movie “Mary Magdalene,” in which Mara plays the title role and Phoenix plays Jesus Christ. Phoenix said the two share a home in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, and live a simple lifestyle: He rises at 6 a.m. and is asleep by 9 p.m. He said they recently watched the 10-hour documentary “The Staircase” at Mara’s suggestion.
