Enormous severed head unearthed from wooded area

An 8,600-pound head of Vladimir Lenin that was removed from a Berlin square in 1991 has been unearthed for a new exhibition. The granite head was part of a 62-foot Lenin figure unveiled in 1970 on East Berlin’s Leninplatz, or Lenin Square. After German reunification the statue was removed, broken into 129 pieces and buried in woods on the city’s southeastern edge. The head was unearthed Thursday. (AP)

Scott Jurek popped a bottle of Champagne while surrounded by a group of supporters in July after completing the trail in 46 days, eight hours. A ranger later cited him for public drinking, littering and hiking in an oversized group. (AP)

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY
Get out to the ‘burbs with a day at the fair
ALFREDO DUARTE PEREIRA (EL TIEMPO LATINO)
THE DISTRICT Local business leaders and residents have cobbled together an Adams Morgan Day festival this Sunday that’s much smaller than in previous years, but one they say will be able to highlight the neighborhood’s businesses and quirks in a way that’s never been done before. The popular festival, which has been running for more than 37 years, initially was to be canceled this year for the first time since 1977 after organizers said they still owed more than $30,000 to the city. Organizers also alleged that the leader of Adams Morgan Main Street, the volunteer organization that puts on the event, had mishandled funds. The former president denied wrongdoing and said the organization has always been financially plagued. The revived festival was put together on a more shoestring

budget, and, unlike previous years, will not shut down 18th Street NW — the main Adams Morgan strip — to traffic. The closed-off 18th Street was a defining characteristic of the festival in years past, with food vendors, live music and thousands of people overflowing from the typically car traffic-heavy street. But a permit to close off the street this year, organizers says, would have been too expensive. “We are going to have a completely open street,” said Arianne
Bennett, who lives in Adams Morgan and owns Amsterdam Falafelshop with her husband. “It’s more like a crawl through Adams Morgan because there’s all these different things hidden and tucked in all the stores.” This year, the business owners along 18th Street NW will partner with other artists, organizations and businesses to showcase their work in their actual stores. The festival will run from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. PERRY STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Your chance to see the Popemobile! Pope Francis will travel in the Popemobile on streets between the White House and National Mall when he visits D.C. later this month, the Archdiocese of Washington said Thursday. The Archdiocese said spectators won’t need tickets to view the parade on Sept. 23, but they will have to pass through security and can’t bring in food or drink. The Archdiocese said security gates will open at 4 a.m. that day and close at 10 a.m. Spectators won’t be able to leave and re-enter until the pope is finished with the tour. (AP)

The Prince George’s County Fair is opening in Fort Washington. The fair, which organizers say is the oldest running fair in Maryland, traces its roots to 1842. This year it goes through Sunday. It includes a petting farm, pig races and music. There’s also a beautiful baby contest and NASCAR simulator race cars. Tickets to the fair are $6 for anyone 12 and over and $5 for anyone 6 to 11. local FAIRFAX COUNTY The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday released a video of a violent encounter between deputies and a mentally ill inmate at the county’s jail that preceded her death in February. The graphic and disturbing 48-minute video shows sheriffs in white biohazard suits and gas masks attempting to subdue 37-year-old Natasha McKenna as she resists their efforts in her cell. McKenna appears to be partially or totally naked in the video. A team of six deputies approaches McKenna’s cell near

the beginning of the video shot on Feb. 3. They were attempting to remove her from her cell to transport her to Alexandria to face a charge of assaulting a police officer. McKenna had a long history of mental illness, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia. In the video, the deputies open McKenna’s cell door and she is pressed against it by a deputy holding a clear riot shield. She had been previously handcuffed. “You promised you wouldn’t kill me,” McKenna can be heard saying. “I didn’t do anything.” McKenna continues to struggle

Key decision on toll lanes suit to come in a few weeks
D.C. restaurant apparently sickens four people
A judge ruled Thursday that the trials for six officers charged in the Freddie Gray case should stay in Baltimore — at least for now. A change of venue hearing attracted demonstrators and national media to Baltimore one week after Judge Barry Williams decided all six officers should have six separate trials. The hearing also comes the same week Gray’s family reached a $6.4 million settlement agreement with Baltimore in the 25-year-old’s death. The judge’s decision was celebrated outside the courthouse, where demonstrators chanted “the trial stays here” and “all night, all day we will fight for Freddie Gray.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)
A federal judge will decide in a few weeks if he will throw out a classaction lawsuit claiming the company in charge of running the Interstate 495 toll lanes in Northern Virginia hit drivers with excessive administrative fees and fines, some reaching into the tens of thousands of dollars for minor violations. U.S. District Judge James Cacheris heard arguments Thursday in federal district court in Alexandria, asking questions of all those involved and offering few hints about which way he might be leaning. He said he would decide whether he should move the case forward or throw it out in a couple weeks after reviewing a transcript of the hearing. (TWP)
At least four people have been hospitalized with salmonella-like symptoms after apparently dining at Fig & Olive, the New York-based chain that opened a location at CityCenterDC in June. One woman was admitted to George Washington University Hospital for a second time Tuesday after previously being admitted over the Labor Day weekend for salmonellalike symptoms, according to her longtime boyfriend, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The infections are apparently all linked to Fig & Olive, where the patients had dined in late August or early September. (TWP)

Obama directs U.S. to take 10,000 refugees POLITICS President Barack Obama will accept at least 10,000 refugees from Syria in the next fiscal year, a six-fold increase over the number admitted this year, a White House spokesman said Thursday. Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the United States will also encourage other countries in the Middle East and around the world to “ramp up” their willingness to take in Syrian refugees, including countries that typically don’t welcome asylum seekers. In the fiscal year that ends
this month, almost 1,600 Syrian refugees have arrived in the United States, according to State Department figures. The United Nations High commissioner for Refugees has submitted more than 18,000 names, but the laborious screening procedure typically takes up to two years to complete. Fewer than 1,600 Syrian refugees have been admitted to the United States since 2011, the vast majority arriving just this year. But that is a small fraction of the more than 18,000 names the United Nations High

Humans have a new relative, bones reveal Scientists say they’ve discovered a new member of the human family tree, revealed by a huge trove of bones in a barely accessible cave in South Africa. The creature shows a surprising mix of human-like and more primitive characteristics. And the discovery presents some key mysteries: How old are the bones? And how did they get into that chamber, with passages as narrow as 7½ inches? Researchers named the creature Homo naledi. Lee Berger, a professor at the University of the Witwatersrand who led the work, said naledi’s anatomy suggests it arose near the root of the Homo group, making it some 2.5 million to 2.8 million years old. (AP)
Commissioner for Refugees says it has submitted for consideration, a number growing far faster than it is being whittled down. The International Rescue Committee has called on Washington to admit 65,000 Syrian refugees by 2016. In May, 14 Democratic senators sent a letter to President Obama urging the same. “It is not too late to do the right thing,” said Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, D-Vt., in a statement Wednesday after meeting with Kerry. CAROL MORELLO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

He can park free in downtown Chicago and at airports in Houston and Chicago for the rest of his life. In all, Bloomberg estimates he will walk away with $28.6 million, more than double Smisek’s pay last year. (TWP)

PHOENIX Authorities in Arizona were investigating two more possible shootings of vehicles in the Phoenix area, where electronic billboards urged freeway motorists to provide tips on a spate of shootings that have residents on edge. The shootings along a busy stretch of Interstate 10 in Phoenix started Aug. 29, when a bullet struck an SUV, shattering glass, which injured a 13-year-old girl riding in it. On that same day, along the same stretch of road, someone fired at a bus, fortunately empty except for the driver, who was not injured.
But bullet holes were found in some of the seats of the bus. That night a car was hit, again, with no injuries. By Tuesday this week, there had been six more similar incidents and no arrests or suspects, prompting Col. Frank Milstead of the Arizona Department of Public Safety to hold a news conference calling the attacks “domestic terrorism” and offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the “person or persons” responsible. The response came the next morning: Another reported shooting at a vehicle on I-10, in that same 8-mile stretch. Again, no one was hurt when a white truck on I-10 was struck. While the police news release Wednesday described “ten shooting incidents,” they seemed uncertain whether all involved

bullets, describing some of the vehicles as being hit by “projectiles,” suggesting that they had not recovered in all cases whatever it was that made the holes.
“Any time you have multiple shootings against American citizens on a highway, that’s terrorism” Milstead said. Police are not positive that
they are all connected, though some clearly were, said Milstead, like the two that were separated by one minute Tuesday, the first at 5:20 a.m. when an eastbound vehicle was hit and a second in the same area at 5:21 a.m., when a westbound vehicle was struck. He pleaded for information from anyone who had seen or heard anything or noticed suspicious behavior. “If you drive that stretch of roadway, always be vigilant,” Milstead said Authorities have mobilized a task force including local SWAT teams, the FBI, state and local police, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in an effort to find out who’s doing the shooting and why and put an end to it. Senate vote gives Obama key win on Iran accord Senate Democrats voted Thursday to uphold the nuclear accord with Iran, overcoming fierce GOP opposition and delivering President Barack Obama a victory on his top foreign policy priority. A disapproval resolution for the agreement fell two votes short of the 60 needed to move forward as most Democratic and independent senators banded together against it. House Republicans continued to pursue longshot strategies to derail the accord and Senate Republicans hoped to force an unlikely re-vote. (AP)

Asian Americans top risk for undiagnosed diabetes
CIA may have missed chance to track hostage
Food manufacturers must be more vigilant about keeping their operations clean under new government safety rules released Thursday by the Food and Drug Administration in the wake of deadly foodborne illness outbreaks linked to ice cream, caramel apples, cantaloupes and peanuts. The rules ran into long delays and came out under a court-ordered deadline after advocacy groups sued. (AP)
More than half of Asian Americans with diabetes don’t know they have the condition, according to new research that quantifies how common diabetes is among that minority group in the U.S. Asian Americans have the highest proportion of undiagnosed diabetes among all ethnic and racial groups, at 51 percent, according to researchers from the National Institutes of Health and the CDC. Study: Women injured twice as often in combat Women in a new Marine Corps unit created to assess how female service members perform in combat were injured twice as often as men, less accurate with infantry weapons and not as good at removing wounded troops from the battlefield, according to the results of a long-awaited study produced by the service. The research was carried out by the service over nine months. About 400 Marines, including 100 women, volunteered to join a unit created to compare how men and women do in a combat environment. The study, an executive summary of which was released Thursday, was carried out as all the services prepare to submit recommendations to Defense Secretary Ashton Carter this fall on whether any jobs should be kept closed to women. The new research will serve as fodder for those who are against fully integrating women. It found that allmale squads, teams and crews demonstrated better performance on 93 of 134 tasks evaluated than units with women in them. Units comprising all men also were faster than units with women while completing tactical movements in combat situations. Ellen Haring, a reserve Army colonel and advocate for fully integrating the military, said the results aren’t surprising. The service was told to assess how individual women do in combat situations, but the task force instead assessed groups with average female Marines — rather than high performers — in them. “The average woman can’t do what the average man does,” Haring said. “It has to be based on individual capabilities.” DAN LAMOTHE

A changed man? Gruden’s backing empowers Cousins understand that if it doesn’t go right early, hang in there and good things will continue to happen if he stays the course. I think he’s going to be fine, just got to relax.” There were many sleepless nights last season when the easygoing Cousins admitted he “was a bear to deal with.” But his confidence returned slowly through the rest of last season and grew over the offseason. Cousins feels empowered by Gruden’s backing — enough to take on the NFL again. “There’s something powerful about feeling believed in,” Cousins said, “and there’s something powerful about knowing where you stand.” This season, which Washington opens Sunday against the Dolphins, Cousins has a mantra to turn to when things are going badly on the field. “I say some phrases that I repeat over and over,” he said. “ ‘Just enjoying the process, having fun, not making it a bigger deal than it is.’ Being able to do that will be very important.” Cousins reads defenses more quickly than Griffin does, a key for a team that’s had a collapsing offensive line in recent history. “We thought he was a real bright guy,” Miami coach

When he answers questions nowadays, Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins shows some savvy that wasn’t there before. Entering his fourth season, he’s getting a second chance — no longer a prisoner of his turnover-machine reputation. Cousins showed his development against Baltimore on Aug. 29, when he led two touchdown drives after throwing an early interception. Too often in the past, one mistake led to a second and a third. Cousins is seeking redemption after winning coach Jay Gruden’s secret preseason quarterback competition over Robert Griffin III. When Griffin suffered a concussion against Detroit on Aug. 20, Cousins replaced his injured teammate once more, and this time he didn’t play scared. Cousins convinced Gruden that his erratic play last season, when he threw nine interceptions in six games, is a thing of the past. Gruden turned to Colt McCoy later in the season rather than return to Cousins, but now he has the coach’s backing. “Biggest thing is [Cousins] can’t feel like the weight of the world is on his shoulders,” Gruden said. “He’s just got to

Joe Philbin said of meeting Cousins during the 2012 NFL scouting combine. “Thought he really understood the game of football, understood projections, knew how to move guys around, make adjustments.” Cousins is opening a season as a starter for the first time in his NFL career, and it comes in what could be his last fall in Washington. A free agent next year, Cousins always figured his opportunity to be a longterm starter would eventually come elsewhere. But now his chance could be in Washington if he plays well. “Stay tuned,” Cousins said. “It’s going to be an interesting ride.”

RUNNING BACKS
OFFENSIVE LINE
Run the ball at least 500 times
Don’t allow more than 30 sacks
Over the past five years, 19 teams recorded 500 or more rushing attempts in a single season. Of those teams, 16 won at least eight games and 12 had double-digit victories — including the Redskins in 2012, when they won the NFC East behind the top-ranked rushing attack. Here’s a list of quarterbacks on a few of those teams that made the playoffs: Nick Foles, Colin Kaepernick, Matt Schaub, Tim Tebow, Matt Cassel and Mark Sanchez. The Redskins claim they’re committed to the run this season after rushing only 401 times in 2014. With Alfred Morris — who has averaged 292 carries and 1,320 rushing yards a season in his three-year career — and bruising rookie Matt Jones, the Redskins have a backfield that could wear down defenses.
Last season, eight of 12 playoff teams allowed 30 sacks or fewer and none allowed more than 45. The Redskins’ quarterbacks were sacked 58 times — the second most in the league. Washington put a lot of effort into improving the offensive line this offseason, drafting Brandon Scherff in the first round and bringing in offensive line coach Bill Callahan from Dallas. It also made Trent Williams the highest-paid tackle in NFL history. Results were mixed this preseason, but the move from Griffin to Cousins should help. Last season, Griffin was sacked 13.4 percent of the times he dropped back for a pass while Cousins was sacked only 3.8 percent. The NFC East had two of the top four pass-rushing teams in the league last season (Giants and Eagles), so the revamped line will be tested.
Little League changing rules to eliminate 13-year-olds from World Series
WIDE RECEIVERS
DEFENSIVE FRONT SEVEN
Have a receiver with 20 catches of 20 yards or more Last season, nine receivers in the NFL reached that benchmark and seven of them played for teams with winning records. The Redskins have shown they have big-play ability. In 2014, they had 20 40-yard receptions — five more than any team in the league. While big plays didn’t translate to wins for the Redskins, the other five teams with at least a dozen 40-yard catches last year did have winning records. When they’re going deep, the Redskins will mostly turn to DeSean Jackson, who had a team-high 16 20-yard catches in 2014. The 28-year-old has reached the 20-for-20 mark in a season twice and both times (2010, 2013) his team, the Eagles, made the playoffs.
Wolves coach Flip Saunders will step aside for treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma
Allow 3.7 yards or less per rush While a good pass rush can help any defense, it wasn’t necessarily a catalyst for wins last season. Only one of the seven teams that recorded 45 sacks or more made the playoffs. A better indicator of success was how well teams defended the run. Five defenses held teams to 3.7 yards or less per rush last year and those teams won an average of 11 games. The Redskins, who allowed 4.1 yards per rush in 2014, have beefed up their line with the additions of 354-pound nose tackle Terrance Knighton and 300-pound end Stephen Paea to improve on a run defense that ranked 12th in yards allowed a year ago. This preseason, coach Jay Gruden has said he’s been encouraged by the Redskins’ stout run defense.
SPECIAL TEAMS
SECONDARY
Finish in the top 15 in the league in punt or kick return average Of last season’s 12 playoff teams, only the Seahawks and the Panthers failed to finish in the top half of the league in either punt or kick return average. The Redskins ranked 25th in kick returns (21.8 yards per attempt) and 21st in punt returns (7.2 yards per attempt) in 2014 and their last special teams return touchdown was by Brandon Banks in 2010. The Redskins hope rookie Jamison Crowder will be their answer to years of futility in the return game. In his last two seasons at Duke, Crowder had four punt return touchdowns in 47 attempts. Third-year running back Chris Thompson will get a second chance at handling kickoff returns. In 2013, his longest return was 28 yards in eight attempts.
ESPN: Bills giving defensive tackle Marcell Dareus a six-year extension with $60 million guaranteed
Grab at least 18 interceptions Last season, the Bengals, Lions and Cardinals made the playoffs with worse team passer ratings than the Redskins’. One thing those three teams had in common is they helped their offense by forcing turnovers on defense, with at least 18 interceptions each. The Redskins’ defense last year managed just seven picks — tied for 28th in the league — and no one player had more than two. Washington’s secondary will get a boost from offseason acquisition Chris Culliver, who had four picks with the 49ers last season. The Redskins also get back DeAngelo Hall, who is second among active players in the NFL with 43 career interceptions. But Hall is 31 and coming back from a torn Achilles tendon, so it’s unclear what shape he’ll be in this year.
Last meeting at FedEx: On Dec. 28, 2014, Dez Bryant had two TDs in a 44-17 Cowboys victory in the season finale. WEEK 14
@ Bears 1 p.m. Dec. 13, Fox
Last meeting: On Oct. 20, 2013, Roy Helu Jr. scored on a 3-yard TD run with 45 seconds left to lift the Redskins to a 45- 41 win. WEEK 15

Both are avid readers, and together their collection fills every corner and crevice of their apartment. Barnes has been a ravenous reader since childhood. “I did the summer reading club every single summer, not just to get the pizza,” she says, “and every year I read way more than everyone else.” Since starting young, she’s assembled a varied collection that includes political memoirs, historical fiction novels, Lauren Conrad titles, and more. Mocharko tends to read more nonfiction. He hangs onto travel and business books and titles by Dave Eggers, Thomas Friedman and Paul Krugman. CONTINUED ON PAGE R3

“My biggest fantasy … is to have the library like in ‘Beauty and the Beast’ with the ladder that swings around the room so that I can glide across and bask in the glory of all my books,” gushes Barnes. There’s no library ladder (yet), but Barnes’ and Mocharko’s walls are indeed lined with books. To accommodate their joint collection, the pair had to purchase so many bookcases that they’ve filled up their wall space. If you want to invest in bookcases of your own, think about how long you’ll have them. Renters should “use something that is easily moveable from apartment to apartment,” says Ben Dursch, a Realtor with Evers & Company. He recommends Ikea pieces, which are versatile and inexpensive. A Kallax shelving unit can act as a room divider, book displayer, or multi-purpose storage space. The company’s popular Billy bookcases can sit on either side of a doorway to lend a librarylike air, Dursch says. If you know you’ll be bringing a large lit collection to a new place, consider finding a unit with built-in storage. Lots of newer units are adding builtins to appeal to book-lovers and other collectors. “Having a collection from over the years displayed proudly on a bookshelf can really make a house feel like a home,” says Mike Ennes, vice president of residential operations and branding for Federal Realty. Their new property Pallas at Pike & Rose (pallasapartments.com) offers built-in shelving nooks. Of course, bookcases can only hold so much. For Barnes and Mocharko, once books were stacked two deep on shelves and lying atop the bookcases they had to think outside the shelf. For extra storage space, they looked to other furniture. “We have an ottoman in the living room that has space underneath, and it’s piled with books under there,” Barnes says. A side-table drawer is also stuffed with literature, and the bathroom and bedroom have stacks of tomes too. When Alec Albright, 24, a graduate student at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, first filled the bookcase in his Columbia Heights
Kiersta Barnes and George Mocharko have devoted nearly all of the wall space in their one-bedroom to bookcases.
Go your own way Some apartment units have unusual floorplans that require precisely measured bookcases to make good use of square footage. There are a handful of stores in D.C. where renters can find just the right storage solutions to fit their niches. Room & Board (roomandboard.com) on 14th Street NW can customize shelving units to the inch with prices starting at $379. A Few Cool Hardware Stores’ locations (acehardwaredc.com) across the D.C. area offer DIY shelves at a lower price point. Sets of brackets start at about $6 and a 1-by-8-by-4-inch piece of wood that can be cut to size to make an over-the-door shelf runs about $12. (M.D.)
studio, he started putting books on top of it. “Now I find stacks of books against my wall and on either side of door frames, providing a sort of column effect,” he says. “My desk has been so thoroughly stacked that I have had to work on top of the books rather than the wooden surface,” Albright admits. He doesn’t seem to mind, though. “A book is a piece of art that should be admired,” he says. Once you’ve covered all shelves and other flat surfaces with books, it’s time to get really crafty. The insides of fireplaces are great spaces for stacking volumes. “Definitely clean them out or line them with a cardboard box before you fit the books inside,” to protect them from soot, wear, and tear, Dursch recommends. Truly strapped for space? Look up! The tops of kitchen cabinets are a book-friendly Easter egg, and “generally over doorways you can always sneak something if you’re really tight,”
Creative storage helps renters find spots for all of their tomes.
Dursch says. The put-a-shelf-over-the-door trick is slick, but it requires a drill and fasteners for installation, then shelf removal and patching up the wall when it’s time to move out. Renters should always check the fine print before mounting anything that could damage the walls, Dursch cautions.
“Tenants need to look at their lease and understand what they can and cannot do,” he says. “There is a security deposit in question.” When it comes to storing stories, “inlets and windowsills are a great help,” Olga Kuzmina, 25, says. The think-tank foreign policy researcher rents a three-bedroom Bloomingdale rowhouse with two roommates. She says she arranges her books “by genre — period fiction, history, psychology, Russian stuff — and within those I vary them by color and size to enhance the appearance of variety.” Lots of people have switched over to tablets and e-readers, but for bibliophiles reading is about the experience of holding a printed work in their hands. “I like possessing them as objects,” Kuzmina says of her books, “but I also think of them in a personified manner, almost as if they are friends.” A book can be a place of refuge from the digital, constantlyplugged-in world. “I feel like I look at the screen all day. Escaping into a book I can shut off technology for a little bit,” Barnes says. “I don’t have to worry about a text or an email popping up. None of that pops up in my book.” MEGAN DOWNEY (FOR EXPRESS)
NEXT WEEK: We’ll review some apps designed for renters in next week’s Ready to Rent.
A multimillion dollar renovation has transformed the historic Irene apartment building in Chevy Chase, Md., into the newly sophisticated 4701 Willard. Built by the late developer and Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin, the Irene once was home to the late Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., and the late Rep. Lindy Boggs, D-La. Equity Residential purchased the property in 2012 and has upgraded the units and added modern amenities to the building, which sits at 4701 Willard Ave. within walking distance of the Friendship Heights Metro station and close to dozens of shops and restaurants. The large rooftop terrace, which has views of the National Cathedral and downtown Washington as well as Virginia and Maryland, has two pools, a tennis court, several seating areas, a bocce court and a “campfire” area with a fire pit. Other new amenities include a fitness center and yoga room and a lounge with a balcony overlooking wooded outdoor space. The lounge includes a kitchen and dining area for entertaining and the building also has a children’s playroom. The studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units, which rent from $1,635 to $3,635, have been updated with granite counters, stainless-steel appliances, wood floors and large closets. They have 10-foot-high ceilings, and some have an enclosed glass sunroom. For more information and apartment availability, call 301-652-1930. MICHELE LERNER (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

How many wins to expect from the Redskins?
JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The man with a plan Scot McCloughan is a proven winner. Can the GM rebuild the Redskins? REDSKINS With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the practice fields out back, the southeast corner office at Redskins Park boasts the best view of the squad as it conducts daily workouts. The prime office space belongs to Scot McCloughan, the general manager known for a keen eye in identifying talent, hired in January to rebuild an NFL team whose championships have become a distant memory. It has been 24 years since the Redskins won a conference title. By any measure, the Redskins are a football reclamation project. And as McCloughan enters his ninth month on the job, charged with shepherding the turnaround, it’s increasingly clear that the rebuild won’t happen overnight. At 44, McCloughan is the first Redskins general manager in nearly two decades with a proven track record, having played a key role in assembling Super Bowl-contending rosters in San Francisco and Seattle. McClougha n bri ngs a
different approach to rosterbuilding than his predecessors in Washington. His philosophy is to draft well and invest in the development of young players rather than buy Pro Bowlers on the free agent market. He also is working to set a tone of collegiality, open debate and shared responsibility in the team’s administrative offices. “The thing that’s important to me is that we can have disagreements or arguments about the players, the 53 [-man roster], the draft, free agency,” McCloughan said in a recent interview in his Redskins Park office. “But when it’s all said and done, we all take ownership together and understand that we’re going to have good days and bad days. But if we stay together, there’ll be a lot less bad days. A lot less.” Son of a former AFL cornerback-turned NFL scout, McCloughan grew up watching game film with his father. Kent McCloughan’s job of scouring the country for Raider-worthy talent was demanding, but he declined
“It’s not about me; it’s about us. … Everybody in this building … all understand that we’re going to fight together.” REDSKINS GM SCOT MCCLOUGHAN
opportunities to climb the management hierarchy so he could spend summers with his sons — David, a former NFL safetyturned Raiders scout himself; Mark, who owns a construction company in Colorado; and Scot. “My dad was on the road all the time; he worked his tail off,” Scot McCloughan recalled. “But when he was home, we would watch tape. It was more like watching games on Sunday with him — sitting there, listening to him talk.” Kent McCloughan never instructed his boys in how to evaluate players.
ESPN: NFL suspending Bills’ Ikemefuna Enemkpali four games for punching ex-teammate Geno Smith
“It wasn’t like he forced it on us at all. He didn’t even force what team he wanted us to root for,” McCloughan said. But he listened and watched his father dissect good plays and bad and chose the same career path after retiring from a baseball career that stalled in the minor leagues. His NFL apprenticeship began as a regional scout for Green Bay in 1994. From there, McCloughan went to Seattle as director of college scouting, then rose up the ranks in San Francisco to general manager. At heart, he remains an area scout who lives out of a suitcase and thrives on uncovering all he can beyond a prospect’s height, weight and speed. “Scot has good instincts, work ethic, conviction in what he believes,” said former Redskins general manager Charley Casserly, now an NFL Network analyst. “He has done it, and he has learned, as we all have, from things we could have done better. I have great respect for him as an evaluator.” LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The Redskins won’t win many games this season, but that doesn’t mean they’ll go winless and they may even win a few more games than most analysts are predicting. According to the simple rating system (SRS) based on Las Vegas point spreads, the Redskins are projected to be the sixth-worst team in the NFL, ahead of the Jets, Buccaneers, Raiders, Titans and Jaguars. For perspective, the Redskins had the fifth-worst SRS during the regular season last year and ended with four wins. This season, we can realistically expect five to eight wins. One 11-win season in 1,000 simulations had victories against the Dolphins (Week 1), Eagles (Weeks 4 and 16), Falcons (Week 5), Jets (Week 6), Buccaneers (Week 7), Panthers (Week 11), Giants (Week 12), Bears (Week 14), Bills (Week 15) and the finale against the Cowboys (Week 17). A dream season indeed! NEIL GREENBERG

NFL Week 1 preview
After getting swept by the Mets again, manager Matt Williams and the Nationals dropped to seven games back in the NL East.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Ravens at Broncos 4:25 p.m. Sunday, CBS
ALEX BRANDON (AP)
Baltimore hasn’t had much success against Peyton Manning (who has?). The Broncos QB, who hasn’t lost a season-opener since 2010, has an 8-2 record vs. the Ravens. This is also the first leg of the Steve Smith Sr. farewell tour.
UPSET SPECIAL
Bills over Colts 1 p.m. Sunday
With coach Rex Ryan’s bravado, LeSean McCoy’s game-breaking skills and Tyrod Taylor’s running ability, the Bills could actually be fun to watch again. In this one, it’ll be about the Bills’ pressure on Andrew Luck.
Five takeaways from season-defining series NATIONALS Three gut-wrenching losses to the New York Mets this week left the Nationals seven games out of first place in the NL East for the first time since April 28. Below are five takeaways from the Mets’ threegame sweep that included three comebacks and all but sealed the Nationals’ fate in 2015.
bullpen, a concern throughout the season, was obvious in Tuesday’s season-defining, six-run meltdown in the seventh inning. Looking at the series as a whole, Nationals relievers allowed 12 runs in eight innings while New York’s bullpen was nearly perfect, allowing one run in 111/3 innings. 3 Storen struggles
1 More needed from ace
Max Scherzer’s second-half struggles continued in Monday’s series opener. The Nationals ace allowed three home runs and blew a 5-3 lead in an eventual 8-5 defeat. In the most important game of the season, the Nats needed more from Scherzer, who is 1-4 in 10 starts since the All-Star break with a 5.12 ERA. 2 Difference in bullpens
The unreliability of the Nationals’
No reliever had a more difficult week than Drew Storen, who was at the center of late-game collapses on consecutive nights. Command is among the issues — Storen walked three batters Tuesday for the first time in 354 career appearances — and confidence is low. Storen has a 7.56 ERA in 18 appearances since the start of August. 4 Cespedes delivers
While trading for Jonathan
PLAYER TO WATCH
Davante Adams, Packers WR at Bears, 1 p.m. Sunday
Papelbon has produced mixed results for the Nationals, the Mets continue to reap the benefits of deadline acquisitions Yoenis Cespedes, Kelly Johnson and Tyler Clippard. Cespedes delivered two of the biggest hits of the series with a three-run double in the seventh inning Tuesday and a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth Wednesday.
With Jordy Nelson out for the year, Aaron Rodgers will be looking for Adams to fill that void opposite Randall Cobb. Opening against last year’s third-worst pass defense should help them get on track.
BOLD PREDICTION
Drew Brees won’t throw a TD Saints at Cardinals, 4:05 p.m. Sunday
The Saints QB holds the NFL record (54) and active record (36) for most consecutive games with a TD pass. But Jimmy Graham was traded to Seattle and the Saints finally have a run game. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)
5 Strasburg impresses
Among the few highlights for the Nationals was Stephen Strasburg’s return in Wednesday’s series finale. Strasburg, who went 10 days between starts, had a personal season-high of 13 strikeouts. He left a 2-2 game after 7 1/3 innings, only to watch the bullpen allow the goahead runs — an all-too-common theme during another lost series. BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

STORYLINE: Can the Bison keep it close? Against FBS school Rutgers last season, they lost by only 13 points, 38-25. In this year’s opener, Howard got pummelled by Appalachian State, losing 49-0. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Every practice, Maryland cornerback Will Likely is coached on the fundamentals of returning punts. He’s told to sprint to the ball and to square up his body before each kick, and sometimes he fields punts with tennis balls in his hands to strengthen his catching ability. But there are some things coaches can’t teach. Part of Likely’s performance Saturday against Richmond, when he set a Big Ten record with 233 punt return yards in a 50-21 seasonopening win, was a product of his workmanlike approach to the position. The other part was purely instinct. “He’s the best I’ve ever been around in terms of tracking the ball, having a feel for everything and then being able to produce the way he produces,” Maryland coach Randy Edsall said. Likely amassed 296 total return yards and took a punt 67 yards for a TD. His 233 punt return yards broke a 76-year-old record set by Iowa’s Nile Kinnick. It also surpassed Likely’s season total of 225 punt return yards in 2014, when he burst onto the scene as an electrifying playmaker. He finished his sophomore season ranked fourth in the country in kickoff return average (31.0) and third in the Big Ten in punt

return average (11.3). He had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Stanford, a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown against West Virginia and interception returns for scores in wins over Iowa and Syracuse. He entered his junior season intending to prove himself as the Big Ten’s best cornerback and as a returner who could help fill the void left by the departure of Terrapins dynamo Stefon Diggs, who was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. “He was a great player. When he was here, we both trusted each other,” Likely said of Diggs, who was the team’s primary kick

returner last season. Likely’s performance Saturday sent a message to the rest of Maryland’s opponents: Kick at your own risk. As he prepares for Bowling Green this week, he understands fewer kicks might come his way. “I don’t know how many opportunities he might get moving forward,” Edsall said. “I think people will try to at least kick the ball out of the end zone on kickoff returns. “I think there will probably be some things now that we’ll have to work on a little bit where they punt away from him.”

‘Wolf Totem’ PG-13, 121 minutes
With its sweeping Mongolian panoramas and majestic, real-life wolf packs, “Wolf Totem” should lure lovers of nature into the theater. But director Jean-Jacques Annaud’s (“Two Brothers”) 3-D action drama will also repel them, because it tells the sad, bloody tale of a campaign in the late 1960s to eradicate wolves from the steppes they once ruled. Deanna Dunagan, left, and Peter McRobbie are the grandparents from hell in “The Visit.”
It’s not pretty, but it’s plenty spooky ‘The Visit,’ although flawed, marks a return to form for Shyamalan FILM REVIEW Measured against the low expectations that the name M. Night Shyamalan has come to engender, “The Visit” is an effective if flawed psychological thriller, a modest campfire story with a solid twist ending. Two teenagers have come to rural Pennsylvania to visit their mother’s parents — in fact, to meet them for the first time. No sooner have 13-year-old Tyler and his older sister Becca (Ed Oxenbould and Olivia DeJonge) arrived in the home of Nana and Pop Pop (Deanna Dunagan and Peter McRobbie) than the old folks start acting funny. Nana wanders around the spooky old farmhouse after dark, clawing at doors; Pop Pop is incontinent and forgetful. Becca, an aspiring filmmaker, is shooting a documentary about their home, capturing the escalating eccentricity. By the end of their week in the country, their grandparents really seem to have lost their marbles, setting the story up for the doozy of a corkscrew turn that’s coming. Shyamalan has always had a flair for visual storytelling, even when his plots have been

over-the-top, as in “Lady in the Water,” or lacking, as in “The Happening.” Here, however, he throws flashy camerawork out the window, resorting to the lazy trick of found footage. “The Visit” has other problems. A backstory about the children’s estranged father — whose marriage to their mother caused a rift in her relationship with her parents — feels like a distraction for much of the film. In the end, however, Shyamalan makes that broken family dynamic work for the story, enriching and deepening a tale that could easily have been just another cheesy horror story. The cast of mostly unfamiliar actors also serves “The Visit” well. When one of his spooky bedtime stories is at full boil — as it is in “The Visit’s” dementedly fun third act — there’s just no stopping him. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Weather Channel ditching shows by Roker, Champion
Major bookstore Kinokuniya says it ordered 90,000 of the 100,000 copies of the first print run of Haruki Murakami’s new novel “Novelist as a Vocation” to shake up the local publishing industry. Kinokuniya says it is supplying 50,000 of those copies to other bookstores to ensure online booksellers don’t shut them out of sales. (AP)
The Weather Channel says it is getting rid of its reality TV shows, along with morning shows led by Sam Champion and Al Roker. The struggling network is looking to get back to its roots, with less expensive programming and a lineup that appeals more to weather geeks. An estimated 50 people out of The Weather Channel’s staff of 1,400 are losing their jobs as a result, the network said on Thursday. An estimated 89 million homes have access to The Weather Channel, but that’s more than 10 million less than at the beginning of the decade. (AP)

“I don’t agree with snooping. Hopefully parents have faith in their children.” CAROL BAEZ , a commenter at buzzfeed.com, reacts to an article alerting parents to fake calculator apps that teens are using to hide photos. The icon for the apps look like a typical calculator, but once the app is opened, the user is prompted to enter a pass code. Enter the correct code and it opens to hidden pictures and files that don’t appear anywhere else on the device.

MAGGIE LANGE , at gq.com, empathizes with President Barack Obama, who during a speech Wednesday in Michigan lamented how quickly his daughters are growing up. The president was discussing his plan to give free community college to as many Americans as possible when he switched gears and turned into America’s Dad. He recounted having to fight back tears as oldest daughter Malia started her senior year of high school. The crowd “awwed” at the show of emotion as the president pretended to wipe away tears.
“So, the only woman on stage at the Apple Event so far has been a man showing how to Photoshop a woman’s smile. Mmmmkkkkk.” @BIZCARSON is disappointed by the lack of diversity at Apple’s event Wednesday. In years past, people have pointed out that there are hardly any women visible at these events. Then, during a demonstration for Adobe’s photo editing tools in the new iPad Pro, attendees were shown how to edit a woman to make it appear she is smiling. This enraged many people online, who found it sexist and inappropriate — especially considering the small number of any real women at the event.

Liam Dutton, a weatherman for British TV station Channel 4 News, casually reported the temperatures for Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, a tiny Welsh village, during a recent report.
“McConaughey’s near ramblings were the single best thing about these ads. Actually, they were basically the only good thing about these ads.” GEORGEGEOFFERSONLIVES, a commenter
at gawker.com, doesn’t like the changes Lincoln made to its new commercials featuring Matthew McConaughey. His previous ads for the car company became a hit and a mockery, with “Saturday Night Live” spoofing them and countless YouTube iterations. Now, the actor doesn’t say a single word in the ads.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Witherspoon told People that her height (5’ 2”) makes dressing for the red carpet a challenge, and that she avoids poofy gowns so as not to “look like a mushroom.” Moore was commended for tastefully accessorizing her red hair, Kaling for a simple black gown with subtle sparkles, and Banks for her graceful, photogenic back.
