Michigan’s new claim to fame: Freakishly disproportionate cats
The Swiss grocery chain Coop has begun selling burgers made from rice, chopped vegetables, spices and ... mealworm larvae. Coop bills the beetle burgers as a nutritious food that “preserves the planet’s resources.” About one-third of the burger is mealworm larvae. A 3.5-ounce burger has 10 grams of protein — about the same amount found in a child’s-size beef burger. Coop says the burgers are selling well in a limited rollout. (AP)
A farmer in Evansville, Ind., has created a corn maze with trails outlining the face of “Star Wars” character Princess Leia. Jeremy Goebel said last week that he did it to honor actress Carrie Fisher, who died in December. He designed the maze in February and planted it this spring using a GPS device. With the corn now mature, the trails outline the princess’s face and distinctive hairstyle and part of her upper body. (AP)
The latest edition of Guinness World Records seems to have identified a trend: outsized cats in Michigan. In Ferndale, the organization found Cygnus, who was named the domestic cat with the world’s longest tail (17.5 inches). And in Ann Arbor, Cygnus’ brother was deemed the world’s tallest cat. Arcturus Aldebaran is 19 inches tall, with legs so long that he can eat off the kitchen counter with his back paws on the ground. (EXPRESS)

A message from the chef THE DISTRICT Two rectangular cards are stuck on Rachel May’s refrigerator door in her D.C. apartment. Each card has a small picture of a Syrian refugee chef and a short bio. On the back is a personalized message: “I hope you enjoy the hummus. I made it fresh today,” one says. The cards came with food May ordered from Foodhini, a yearold meal delivery service that hires immigrant and refugee chefs to cook traditional cuisines and tell their stories. So far, in Washington’s upscale and immigrant-embracing neighborhoods, the outreach has been a hit. “For a very long time, I was emotional about getting a note from a stranger,” said May, an energy policy specialist. “It adds a face to the food that you’re eating.” Noobstaa Philip Vang, whose parents moved to the U.S. from Laos as Hmong refugees in 1976, launched Foodhini in October 2016, hoping to create new opportunities for the immigrant diaspora and introduce more authentic international food to D.C.

A chef’s note from Lobsang Dorjee Tsering, a Tibetan refugee who moved to the U.S. in 2014, hangs on a food delivery packet at Foodhini in D.C.
There currently are four chefs preparing Syrian, Lao and Tibetan food in the Foodhini workspace at the Union Kitchen business incubator in Northeast’s Ivy City neighborhood. Each meal comes with a personalized message and instructions from the chef so that people who are new to a specific cuisine can eat it right. “We are ultimately trying to connect customers to our chefs and their stories,” Vang said. “The human aspect here is really important.”
“Those notes from the chefs make me feel like hearing my grandparents talk about their food.” MARY VERSAILLES, who started ordering from Foodhini after reading about it in January. The chefs’ stories remind the federal employee of her grandmother, who left her home in Lithuania and moved to the U.S. after World War II.

The first chef hired at Foodhini is not an immigrant but has spent much of her life in Southeast Asia. U.S.-born Melissa “Mem” Frabotta grew up in Thailand and later moved to Laos, where she learned to cook Laotian food from her mother-in-law. Chefs Majed Abdulraheem and Ghosoun Alhumayer, who came to the United States as Syrian refugees in 2016, joined Foodhini early this year. The most recent hire is Lobsang Dorjee Tsering, who lived as a Tibetan refugee in India before moving to the United States with his Americancitizen wife in 2014. The startup receives about 125 to 150 orders weekly, according to Vang, who hopes to bring in more chefs. He called the business his “contribution to creating cultural exchanges through food.” “When people order a meal and eat it, they send us text messages and photos,” Vang said. The chefs, in turn, delight in hearing from their American customers and seeing pictures of them eating traditional foods. “Their goal is that the person who eats their food enjoys it like they do,” Vang said. Contract talks collapse between Metro, union
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY
TRANSPORTATION Metro and its largest union have failed to agree on a new labor contract, the union said last week, triggering the start of a lengthy and uncertain arbitration process as the transit agency faces increased budget pressures. The stalemate won’t affect rail or bus service, Metro said, but it signals a worsening of labor relations at a time when the jurisdictions that fund the agency want it to rein in costs and improve performance. Jackie Jeter, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689, said the union formally notified management Friday that talks originally aimed at a three-year agreement have reached an impasse. Either side can declare such a standoff, which automatically means a three-member arbitration panel is appointed to resolve the dispute. Metro says that

process takes six to nine months. The two sides are at odds over retirement benefits, wages, health care and work rules, with pensions apparently the principal obstacle. Metro is concerned that the arbitration process is tilted in the union’s favor, because the arbitrators don’t take into account the jurisdictions’ ability and willingness to pay the higher labor costs. But the union counters that it has lost valuable benefits under arbitration in the past and fears it might do so again. Metro said the breaking point
in the talks came when the union refused to consider management’s proposal that future employees would have 401(k)-style defined contributions pension plans. Those are less generous than the defined-benefit pensions of current employees. ATU 689, which has about 9,200 members, has been working under an expired contract since July 2016. Its contract typically sets the pattern for pacts with Metro’s other four unions, which are much smaller. ROBERT McCARTNEY

Amid hack worries, Va. bars some vote machines VIRGINIA The Virginia State Board of Elections voted Friday to ban the use of touch-screen voting machines in November’s closely watched gubernatorial contest over concerns that the equipment can be hacked. The three-person board voted unanimously at a hastily arranged meeting to decertify touch-screen voting machines, which are still used by counties and cities around the state. The vote came after a closed-door briefing on potential vulnerabilities in the touch-screen systems. “It was enlightening, to say the least,” said board member Clara Belle Wheeler, who said she had originally intended not to vote for decertification because of the closeness to the Nov. 7 elections.

Are you having money and relationship problems?
Virginia’s board of elections voted to ban the use of touch-screen voting machines this November.
The state said it is keeping information about these vulnerabilities private because other states use these touch-screen voting machines. Virginia and
New Jersey are the only states holding statewide elections this year. Virginia officials said the decision to decertify the machines was partly motivated by a demonstration at a hacking conference this year showing that the touch screens could be hacked easily. Some localities objected to the move, saying the risks of vote totals being manipulated on the machines were overhyped. Election officials from the city of Norfolk said a vote to decertify “would be like screaming ‘fire’ in a crowded movie theater.” Some of the counties using touch-screen machines are in economically depressed areas of the state that have not been able to afford voting machine upgrades. local THE DISTRICT D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine, a Democrat, announced Friday that he will run for reelection to his current seat, putting an end to widespread speculation that he might challenge Mayor Muriel Bowser in 2018. Racine’s decision, which he disclosed during an appearance on “The Kojo Nnamdi Show” on WAMU-88.5, eases Bowser’s path toward keeping her job leading the city. It comes after a Washington Post poll in June showed Racine trailing Bowser by a 40-point margin among
registered Democrats in a hypothetical mayoral race. “I’ve decided that what’s most important to me is to continue to serve as attorney general,” Racine said. “Thinking about leaving prior to finishing a job was not appealing. … I think I need another term to really build that office in a way that’s going to make the city proud.” Racine said he had communicated his decision to Bowser and that “she was incredibly pleasant and gracious.” He declined to say whether he would endorse Bowser’s re-election bid, which she is

A former criminal defense attorney with strong ties in the District’s deep-pocketed legal community, Racine has a compelling personal story — he emigrated from Haiti as a child — and has begun to attract attention as he and other state attorneys general take on the Trump administration over its immigration policies. THE FIDO EFFECT

CRIME Wilmington, Del., isn’t Chicago or Los Angeles, Baltimore or Detroit. It is a city of less than 72,000 known primarily as the birthplace of chemical giant DuPont and as a cozy home for big banks and Fortune 500 firms. But an Associated Press and USA Today Network analysis of gun violence data — gathered from media reports and police press releases, and covering a 3½ -year period through June of this year — reveals that Wilmington far and away leads the country in its rate of shootings of people ages 12 to 17. “It’s nonstop, just nonstop,” said William Rollins V, father of one teen who was fatally shot and two who were injured by gunfire. Of the 10 cities with the highest rates of teen shootings, most had populations of less than 250,000. Among them were Savannah, Ga., Trenton, N.J., Syracuse, N.Y., Fort Myers, Fla., and Richmond. Chicago was the lone large-population city high on the list. Poverty and a sense of hopelessness in the most violent neighborhoods is a common thread. Syracuse, a university town that once cranked out air conditioners and televisions, now has a poverty rate of 35 percent. Others, like Savannah, are

deeply divided. While its antebellum mansions and marble monuments to war heroes drew more than 13 million visitors last year, away from the oasis of Southern charm the scenery quickly shifts to decaying neighborhoods, abject poverty and deadly violence. Size may play a role. In tightly packed neighborhoods, insults and perceived insults ricochet like shots in an echo chamber. One shooting inevitably leads to speculation about who will be targeted next. Social media accelerates the threats, and the danger. Teenagers whose brains are years from fully maturing are roaming the streets with a gun in one pocket and a smartphone in the other.
“A juvenile with a gun is a heck of a lot more dangerous than a 24- or 25-year-old with a gun,” said James Durham, the acting U.S. attorney based in Savannah. In Wilmington, data show that roughly 3 of every 1,000 adolescents are injured or killed annually from gun violence. That is almost twice the rate reported from Chicago and over 9 times the national average as reported for 2015 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The news organizations sought to measure teenage gun violence in America’s cities because it is something the federal government does not track on a regular and comprehensive basis. JULIET

The Mayo Clinic study tracked the sleep of 40 dog owners over a five-month period and found that those who kept their dogs in their bedrooms slept better than those who did not. “We found that many people actually find comfort and a sense of security from sleeping with their pets,” said sleep medicine specialist Lois Krahn, who authored the study. People who let their dogs sleep in bed with them, however, sacrificed quality sleep. (EXPRESS)

Irma still on attack in Florida

were no immediate confirmed reports of any deaths in Florida. Many streets were flooded in downtown Miami and other cities. Appliances and furniture were seen floating away in the low-lying Keys, although the full extent of Irma’s fury there was not clear. A Miami woman who went into labor was guided through delivery by phone when authorities couldn’t reach her in high winds and street flooding. Firefighters later took her to a hospital. An apparent tornado spun off by Irma destroyed six mobile homes in Palm Bay, hundreds of miles away along the state’s Atlantic coast. Flooding was reported along Interstate 4, which cuts across Florida’s midsection. In downtown Miami, two of the two dozen construction cranes looming over the skyline collapsed in the wind. No injuries were reported. City officials said it would have taken about two weeks to move the massive equipment. Curfews were imposed in Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and much of the rest of South Florida, and some arrests of violators were reported. Miami Beach barred outsiders from the island. More than 2.7 million homes and businesses across the state lost power, and utility officials said it will take weeks to restore electricity to everyone.

IRMA A monster Hurricane Irma roared into Florida with 130 mph winds Sunday for what appeared to be a sustained assault on nearly the entire Sunshine State, submerging streets, knocking out power to millions and snapping massive construction cranes over the Miami skyline. The 400-mile-wide storm blew ashore Sunday morning in the mostly cleared-out Florida Keys and then began a slow march up the state’s west coast. As of Sunday evening, forecasters expected the storm to hit the heavily populated TampaSt. Petersburg area early today. “Pray, pray for everybody in Florida,” Gov. Rick Scott said on “Fox News Sunday” as some 160,000 people statewide waited it out in shelters. Irma made landfall as a Category 4 just after 9 a.m. at Cudjoe Key, about 20 miles from Key West, forecasters said. By late Sunday afternoon, it had weakened to a Category 2 as it rounded Florida’s southwestern corner and pushed toward Naples, Sanibel, Fort Myers and Sarasota, at 14 mph. Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles from its center. A storm surge of over 10 feet was recorded in the Keys, and forecasters warned that some places on the mainland could get up to 15 feet of water. There

“Once this system passes through, it’s going to be a race to save lives and sustain lives,” Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Brock Long said on “Fox News Sunday.” With FEMA still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Irma could test the agency’s ability to handle two disasters at the same time. Meteorologist Ryan Maue of WeatherBell Analytics said the entire Florida peninsula will be raked by Irma’s right front quadrant — the part of a hurricane that usually brings the strongest winds, storm surge, rain and tornadoes. Paradises to disaster zones IRMA The wild isolation that made St. Barts, St. Martin, Anguilla and the Virgin Islands vacation paradises has turned them into cut-off, chaotic nightmares in the wake of Hurricane Irma, which left 24 people dead, mostly in the Leeward Islands. Looting and lawlessness were reported Saturday by both French and Dutch authorities, who were sending in extra troops to restore order. The Category 5 storm snapped the islands’ fragile links to the outside world with a direct hit early Wednesday, pounding their small airports, decapitating cellphone towers, filling harbors with overturned, crushed boats and leaving thousands of tourists and locals desperate to escape. The situation worsened Saturday with the passage of Category 4 Hurricane Jose. Looting, gunshots and a lack of clean drinking water were reported on the French Caribbean territory of St. Martin, home to five-star resorts and a multimillion-dollar estate owned by President Trump. Federal officials deployed C-130s to evacuate

Virgin Islands. The Dutch government estimated Saturday that 70 percent of houses in St. Maarten were badly damaged or destroyed, leaving much of the population of 40,000 in public shelters. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said 230 Dutch troops and police were patrolling the island to maintain order and deliver aid and a further 200 would arrive in the coming days. The islands’ woes increased as the airport on St. Barts was closed, and those in Anguilla and St. Martin were open only to the military, rescue crews and aid organizations. Others, including St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, banned flyovers. Once known for pink sandy beaches, the island of Barbuda is now a disaster zone, with nearly all of its structures damaged. Virtually all of its 1,500 residents left for Antigua, a 1½-hour boat ride away, ahead of Jose. “The biggest problem in Barbuda now is the fact that you have so many dead animals in the water and so on. … You could put all the people back in Barbuda today ... but then you’ll have a medical crisis on your hand,” Foreign Affairs Minister Charles Fernandez said. Much of eastern Alabama and coastal South Carolina were also under tropical storm warnings. (AP)
Powerful waves and storm surge from Irma topped Havana’s iconic Malecon seawall and left thousands of homes, businesses and hotels swamped Sunday, even as the storm moved away from the island. There were no immediate reports of fatalities in Cuba, where the government prides itself on disaster preparedness and said it had carried out evacuations totaling more than 1 million people. (AP)
As Irma pushed water out of a bay in Tampa on Sunday, about 100 people ignored forecasters’ warnings to stay away, some venturing as far as 200 yards out to get to the water’s new edge on Old Tampa Bay. The waters, normally 4 to 5 feet deep, retracted because the hurricane’s leading wind bands whipped the coastal water out to sea, but they were expected to return with vengeance once the eye passed and the winds reversed. Disasters bring addiction issues out into public IRMA In the midst of preparations for Hurricane Irma, a needle exchange program in Miami handed out extra syringes to heroin users. Others trying to break from the drug’s grasp picked up advance medication from methadone clinics. The problems of alcoholism and addiction become more public in a storm, said researcher Andrew Golub of the National Development and Research Institutes in New York, which studied illicit drug users in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. “During a storm, it becomes harder to hide and cope with one’s addiction in private,” Golub said. During Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy, researchers learned that drug users took chances during storms, avoiding evacuation to stay near their dealers or sharing needles with strangers, putting themselves in danger of HIV and hepatitis. Florida’s first needle exchange program — aimed at preventing overdoses and blood-borne infections — faces its biggest challenge yet with Irma. This past week, Dr. Hansel Tookes and his team gave away a week’s supply of clean needles and overdose reversal kits, or Narcan. “We want to make sure all of our people have Narcan so they can save lives and be first responders in the storm,” Tookes said of the 400 drug users who rely on his program. Mexico quake’s toll hits 90 Aftershocks hamper efforts to get relief to uneasy survivors WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE SWITCH

JUCHITAN, MEXICO Life for many has moved outdoors in the quake-shocked city of Juchitan, where a third of the homes are reported uninhabitable and repeated aftershocks have scared people away from many structures still standing. The city on Sunday was littered with rubble from Thursday night’s magnitude 8.1 earthquake, which killed at least 90 people across southern Mexico — at least three dozen of them in Juchitan itself. Some people continued to sleep outside, fearful of more collapses, as strong aftershocks kept rattling the town, including a magnitude 5.2 jolt early Sunday. Some prompted rescue workers to pause in their labor. Local officials said they had counted nearly 800 aftershocks of all sizes since the big quake, and the U.S. Geological Survey counted nearly 60 with a magnitude of 4.5 or greater. Teams of soldiers and federal police armed with shovels and sledgehammers fanned out across neighborhoods to help demolish damaged buildings in Juchitan,

where dump trucks choked some narrow streets as they began hauling away tons of rubble. President Enrique Pena Nieto said a third of the city’s homes were uninhabitable — a problem that extended throughout the region. Both Chiapas and Oaxaca states reported thousands of homes and hundreds of schools badly damaged. Mexico’s education secretary announced that schools will remain closed today in Oaxaca and Chiapas.

Rohingya insurgents declare month-long truce
Trump readies for his first Sept. 11 commemoration
Rohingya insurgents, whose attack on Myanmar security forces last month triggered savage military reprisals, declared a month-long truce Sunday as refugees continued to flood across the border into Bangladesh only to face scant basic resources, hunger and illness. The Muslim insurgents urged Myanmar’s government to reciprocate in order to assist all victims, regardless of their background. (AP)
President Trump today will preside over his first 9/11 commemoration in office, an occasion that may highlight his muddled previous claims about the attack on U.S. soil. Trump and first lady Melania Trump planned to observe a moment of silence at the White House. Oaxaca Gov. Alejandro Murat said Sunday that the death toll in his state had risen to 71, while officials have reported 19 killed in neighboring states. The earthquake caused so many deaths in Juchitan that slow-moving funeral processions caused temporary gridlock at intersections as they converged on the city’s cemeteries. On the outskirts of the city, the general hospital settled into its temporary home — a school gymnasium. The earthquake

Consumers affected by the Equifax data breach are scrambling for ways to protect their financial lives. Some suggest freezing your credit. Freezing your credit means placing restrictions on who can view your credit report. Why is this important? Well, applying for housing, checking accounts or new credit cards can all involve a credit pull by potential landlords, mortgage lenders or banks. If you prevent them from pulling your credit, it’ll frustrate the fraudsters who need these organizations’ approval to open fake accounts using your stolen identity. Freezing your credit comes with a $5 to $10 charge for each credit bureau. Often, victims of identity theft can freeze their credit at no charge. To get the ball rolling, contact Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. They will ask for your personal information, including your date of birth and Social Security number. Once you’ve supplied those and frozen your credit report, nobody except your existing lenders, or their debt collectors, will be able to see it. The only other entities that are allowed to see your credit report are government agencies carrying out a search warrant or subpoena, and yourself. If you need to unfreeze it, you can contact the credit bureaus and ask them to lift, or “thaw,” the freeze, which can also come with a small fee. BRIAN FUNG

AFTER THE SLOW-STARTING REDSKINS BUMBLED THROUGH THE PRESEASON, the best hope for fans
was that coach Jay Gruden was saving his most dynamic play-calls for the regular season or that players were waiting to unleash their full potential for when the games mattered. Those thoughts
proved sadly misplaced Sunday as the Redskins trailed the Eagles by two scores early and were undone by four turnovers in a 30-17 loss at FedEx Field. Philadelphia’s Carson Wentz threw for 307 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins took a pounding, lost two fumbles and threw for 240 yards, a touchdown and an interception. LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)
OFFICIALS’ WORST CALL: With Washington trailing 22-17 late in the fourth quarter, Brandon Graham forced Kirk Cousins to fumble, and Fletcher Cox scooped it up and returned the ball 20 yards into the end zone. Repeated viewings showed Cousins’ arm moving forward, and he was convinced it was an incompletion, not a fumble. So was Fox rules expert Mike Pereira. But the call on the field stood. WORST SAME OLD PROBLEM:
Trailing 19-14 in the third quarter, the Redskins marched 66 yards on 16 plays but stalled in the red zone. Washington ranked 29th in TD rate inside the 20 last season and started this year 0-for-1 after settling for a 33-yard Dustin Hopkins field goal. Josh Doctson, who was expected to help the Redskins improve in the red zone, wasn’t targeted all day.
New Redskins receiver Terrelle Pryor Sr. drops a pass in the first quarter. BEST PICK SIX: Ryan Kerrigan, who had 3.5 sacks in two meetings against the Eagles last season, picked off a Carson Wentz pass that was tipped at the line by Stacy McGee. Kerrigan returned it 24 yards into the end zone midway through the
second quarter for Washington’s first touchdown. He has scored on all three of his career picks. BEST PLAY: Chris Thompson made Washington’s most jaw-dropping play of the first half. The running

back took a short pass from Cousins and then spun and pinballed his way to a 29-yard touchdown with 1:17 to play in the second quarter. Hopkins’ extra point gave the Redskins a short-lived 14-13 lead. WORST IDEA: Giving an NFL passer 10 seconds to find a receiver open downfield. On third down of the Eagles’ first drive, Wentz slithered away from rookie Jonathan Allen and Preston Smith before finding Nelson Agholor for a 58-yard score. WORST DEBUT: Redskins receiver Terrelle Pryor Sr. let a potential 50-yard pass fall through his hands early, had a fourth-quarter drop and finished with six catches for 66 yards on 11 targets. The struggle is real
THE TAKEAWAY
Protection problems spell trouble On the two most significant plays of the fourth quarter Sunday, Kirk Cousins was leaning back as he threw. The Eagles’ pass rush gave the Redskins’ quarterback no room to step forward. There was a sailing interception he threw over the head of Jamison Crowder in the red zone when Washington trailed by two. And there was a bouncing ball that was ruled a fumble when Cousins got crunched as he threw. It was returned for a TD by Fletcher Cox, ending any hope that Washington could win with a successful twominute drill. Cousins was sacked four times. He tied Rob Kelley for the team rushing lead (30 yards), which is an indictment of shaky line play as much as a credit to Cousins’ scrambling. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Nationals first to clinch NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2 The shortest game of the season at Nationals Park turned into a lengthy afternoon for Washington. It was well worth it when the champagne corks started flying in the locker room. The Nationals became the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season, winning the NL East on Sunday as Stephen Strasburg extended his scoreless streak to a franchise-record 34 innings in a 3-2 win over the Phillies in 2 hours, 16 minutes More than 90 minutes after Washington finished off the Phillies, Nationals Park erupted again when Lane Adams hit a two-run, 11th-inning homer to lead Atlanta over second-place Miami, sealing the division title for the fourth time in six years. Several hundred fans remained, and fireworks erupted from the upper deck. Players poured out of the dugout wearing ski goggles, embraced their wives, girlfriends and children and flung hats and T-shirts into the crowd.

We think that we have more ways to score.” Trea Turner homered and tripled for the Nationals on Sunday, and Victor Robles got his first major league hit and RBI as Washington rested nearly all its regular starters. The Nationals also moved within four games of the fading Dodgers for the best record in baseball. Strasburg (13-4) threw two-hit ball for eight innings and struck out 10. He hasn’t allowed a run since Aug. 19 at San Diego, which was his first start since coming off the disabled list with an elbow nerve impingement. Since returning from the DL, he is 3-1 with a 0.51 ERA, 41 strikeouts and just four walks. The No. 1-ranked Nadal dominated every facet of the 2½-hour final. He broke the South African’s big serve four times and never faced a break point against his 6-foot-8 opponent. Nadal improved to 16-7 in Grand Slam finals. For the first time since 2013, he appeared in three in a single season, losing to Federer at the Australian Open
in January, then beating Stan Wawrinka for his record 10th French Open trophy in June. A day earlier, Sloane Stephens, 24, easily beat her close friend and fellow American Madison Keys 6-3, 6-0 in the first Grand Slam final for both, becoming only the second unseeded woman to win the tournament in the Open era, which began in 1968. Corey Carroll II can do his coursework for American University’s online master’s program anywhere, which helps him fit it around his job as a teacher.
Making lesson plans New choices for online master’s degrees will help meet the demand for teachers GRADUATE DEGREES Corey Carroll II wants to help shape education policy. But to effectively do that, he knows he has to educate himself first. He started by becoming a teacher. “I had to see what education looked like firsthand,” says Carroll, 22, who teaches history at Central High School in Capitol Heights, Md. “And it’s been a real eye-opener.” This August, he launched phase two of his plan, starting American University’s new online master of education in education policy and leadership program. “I was kind of skeptical of going to an online graduate program,” he admits. “I feel like I need to see my professors, that I need to be in class. But on top of teaching every day, there was just no time for me to make it into a classroom.”
Online graduate degrees in education have become a popular choice for busy professionals interested in careers in teaching, administration or education policy. “Interest has definitely been increasing, even in our cohort programs that have had a long-standing tradition of face-to-face instruction,” says Pamela Hudson Baker, director of the division of special education and disability research at George Mason University. Online programs help expand access to graduate degrees in education, an important element of meeting the demand for qualified educators in this country. According to a 2016 report from the nonprofit education research group Learning Policy Institute, the United States could find itself as many as 112,000 teachers short by 2018

if teacher supply doesn’t change. Those numbers are one reason American University established its three new online graduate programs in education. In addition to its master of education program in education policy and leadership that launched in August, its online master of arts in teaching and master of arts in special education with a focus on learning disabilities begin in January. “We talk a lot about accessibility when it comes to [younger] students, and we believe that
same access should be there for graduate students,” says Julie Sara Boyd, assistant dean for online education in the School of Education at American University. American’s new online programs use the same curriculum and faculty as their corresponding on-campus graduate programs (which will also continue), which have a proven track record of success. According to Boyd, the university has a 100 percent placement rate for graduating teachers and a 93 to 96 percent placement rate for graduates going into education policy. “That, along with the demand for teachers, were the biggest motivators in taking our programs online and reaching a wider audience,” she says. “Why should only people who live here have access to the quality of experts that are in this area?” The ability to learn from folks who have worked on major education policies was a CONTINUED ON PAGE 18
The GRE is enough for Georgetown Georgetown University Law Center said in a statement this summer that it will start accepting the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in addition to the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Prospective students for the 2018 entering class will be able to submit scores from either or both tests, according to a news release. “While the LSAT remains an important admissions tool, we also believe that it is well past time that the legal profession open wide the doors to an even more diverse population that better reflects American society as a whole,” Dean of Admissions Andy Cornblatt said. He added that the LSAT presents several barriers to potential applicants, including cost and a restrictive testing schedule. SARAH LARIMER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Online education definite draw for Carroll. And he’s already seen the benefits of having fellow students from a variety of geographic regions and backgrounds. “We have people who live in Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Texas and who work for nonprofits or state and district offices,” he says. “I can already tell that once we get to debating ideas and having great conversations, it’s going to be so effective. I can truly say that this program is probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” Working in education requires a lot of interpersonal skills, and these online programs make sure those skills are developed even if students aren’t sitting in the same room. Students often connect in real time for live, synchronous class sessions via video chats using web conferencing programs like Blackboard Collaborate. Or they discuss

group assignments in online forums or via email or recorded video. Baker says that all of these methods offer insight on these future educators’ temperaments and personalities.
“You get a real sense of their professionalism and compassion in the way they respond to ideas from other people and the situations presented to them,” she says.
“I never realized how much intimacy there could be in a video chat,” C arroll says. “Everyone’s in comfortable clothes; some people are eating, some are [looking after]
their kids. Everyone’s having a life, which makes it so much more personable and relatable.” To keep up with technology, George Mason University is currently revamping two of its online graduate certificate programs in special education, one with a focus on applied behavior analysis and another with a focus on autism spectrum disorders. Both will be relaunched in January. They can be earned on their own or as concentration areas for students enrolled in the school’s special education online master’s degree program. “I am optimistic that we are going to see our reach extend beyond the borders of the D.C. metro area as we move forward,” Baker says. “And it’s always better to extend opportunities to more people, in order to create the chance that you’ll enhance diversity and bring people into the profession who really can make a difference but may not have had access before.” BETH LUBERECKI (FOR EXPRESS)

This D.C. tutor lives the schoolin’ life Name: Alicia Eldridge, 26 Position: Private tutor Salary: $35 an hour
What she does Alicia Eldridge was tutoring a kid who liked candy, but not math — so she scattered a handful of mints on the table and used them to illustrate subtraction. Another client loved the “Dork Diaries” books, so she enticed her by weaving the characters into math word problems. “Education has always been my thing,” says Eldridge, an elementary teacher with Prince George’s County Public Schools who’s been tutoring since she was 15. “And I want to give my knowledge to all the kids who need it. I try to make it really hands-on and geared toward what they like.” Eldridge is certified as a teacher for grades one through six, so those are the ages she prefers to tutor, though exceptions occasionally arise. When
she first makes contact with a prospective client, she asks the student to complete an assessment “based on Common Core state standards, which helps me see where they need help. Then I create a plan and send it to their parents to review, and they determine how many hours they’d like me to tutor for.” Eldridge tutors one-on-one, usually meeting with students three nights a week, though one client recently expressed interest in five nights a week. Sessions are typically an hour — held in the client’s home or at the local library — and she spends about 30 minutes preparing for each. Most kids need help with math, reading or science, and Eldridge gears sessions to each student’s learning style. For example, “I have one of my students keep a binder of vocabulary words she comes across that she doesn’t know,” she says. “Then I have her write them down and define them.” But even the most

studious kids get antsy easily and don’t like to sit still for an hourlong lesson, so Eldridge says the key is taking breaks, switching between favored and less favored subjects, and sprinkling in attention-grabbing activities. “Another of my students likes games, so I taught him how to multiply fractions using Uno cards,” she says. Since she’s off during the summer, Eldridge has a lot of time to tutor, and business is steady CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

Eldridge started tutoring at an aftercare program as a high school student, helping younger kids with reading and math homework. She then pursued a degree in elementary education at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, N.C., followed by a master’s at Trinity Washington University. Though Eldridge has generated some business via online services such as Wyzant, which connects tutors and students, she prefers to operate independently. “They don’t let you give your personal email address out, and they take a percentage of your money,” she says. Eldridge is listed on the Knowledge Roundtable, an online tutoring marketplace, and she advertises her business on Craigslist and her website; plus she gets referrals from clients.

You’ve got to be passionate about education, learning and children (if that’s the age you’ll be tutoring), Eldridge says. “Some people go into it thinking, ‘Oh, I can make some quick money by
helping this child out,’ but you have to actually know how to assess children and learn different strategies for their specific learning style.” She recalls the time a kindergartner she’d been teaching to read was able to recite an entire paragraph by himself. “I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, I did that!’ ” she says. “That felt good. Sometimes I feel like, ‘You don’t even have to pay me; I did what I wanted to do.’ ”
How you can get the job You can work with a big tutoring service, like Kaplan or Sylvan Learning, or sign up with a website like Wyzant or Varsity Tutors. “It really is” possible to do it as a solo venture, Eldridge says, but be patient: “It took me a couple months to find clients.” And consider being flexible with your rate, especially at first: While it’s common for tutors to charge up to $90 or more an hour, Eldridge believes she attracts more clients by charging a comparatively low $35 per hour. She adds that anyone with a special skill set can tutor, but a lot of clients prefer to hire those who are also teachers certified in the areas they’re tutoring. “I usually give a copy of my transcripts to people so they can see all the courses I’ve taken,” she says. “It’s all about being comfortable with your tutor. If you’re not comfortable, you’re not going to learn anything.” ANGELA HAUPT (FOR EXPRESS)

1 ‘Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief’ 8 p.m. Tuesday on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox
‘Deuce’ does the dirty HBO’s new series artfully retraces the gritty 1970s sex industry in Times Square
TV REVIEW After all those come-ons that aired before and after “Game of Thrones,” HBO viewers are doubtlessly aware that “The Deuce,” a provocative new drama from co-creators David Simon and George Pelecanos (“The Wire”), is about a seedier era in the history of Times Square, circa 1971, when it was full of prostitutes, pimps and peep shows. For your money and their effort, “The Deuce,” which premiered Sunday, promises a sensual yet sufficiently gritty, occasionally violent and nostalgically illicit act of time travel. Along the way you’ll meet dishonest cops, ruthless mob hands, corrupt union reps, tenderhearted pornographers and, of course, a whole lot of fascinating,
streetwise women whom you’ll frequently see naked, while feeling a mixture of sympathy and admiration for them. (There are also glimpses of naked men, too, but you won’t feel much for them.) James Franco plays the morally differentiated twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino. Hard-working Vincent is a manager at two bars, one of them in a failing Korean restaurant in Times Square. The less trustworthy Frankie is a gambling addict in hock to bookies and criminals. Through mob backing, Vincent gets a chance to run his own bar off Times Square, and Frankie wants a piece of the action. Maggie Gyllenhaal co-stars as Eileen Merrell, who works Times Square as a prostitute named Candy. Nearing 40, Candy is

something of a curiosity among the younger women with whom she shares the sidewalk — she is self-employed and doesn’t have a pimp. Gyllenhaal, who has proved time and again that she can excel in just about any part out there, is sublime in every episode, serving as a strong, constant reminder that this story belongs to its female characters, despite an oversupply of male characters and male dominance. Other than Gyllenhaal, the show’s most notable asset is the ensemble of supporting players who play the prostitutes and pimps. It should come as no surprise that they’re the star attractions, given the subject matter, but it is notable, after so many years of stereotyping those in the sex trade, that they
are given a sense of dignity. “The Deuce” doesn’t endorse the world it portrays and, perhaps underscoring its anthropological or reportorial tendencies, it introduces a character named Sandra Washington (Natalie Paul), a young journalist who works for an African-American newspaper and starts hanging out at Times Square, hoping to write an in-depth story about prostitutes, pimps and their cyclical encounters with the law. She’s interested, you’re interested, I’m interested — at its most elemental, “The Deuce” is a show about the mysteries and power and infinite market potential of sex. How could we not be interested and still call ourselves human?

The win was a major comeback for Stephens — who had taken a few months off from tennis after foot surgery in January — and she did not hold back in showing her joy and excitement. When Stephens was told in a press conference that she made only six unforced errors in the match, she said: “Shut the front door. I don’t think that’s ever happened before. Oh, my God. That’s a stat.
