Car thieves take stolen SUV on exact opposite of a joyride
Claustrophobics might not want to look up this particular viral video. In it, a man in an Indian village near the city of Vijayapura allows himself to be lowered by his legs into a narrow well shaft to rescue a trapped lamb, UPI reports. When he can’t reach it, another man goes in all the way to his knees as three other men hold his ankles. After a tense few moments, he’s pulled back up, carrying the bleating lamb with him. (EXPRESS)
Police say thieves stole an SUV and an attached U-Haul trailer — with a casket inside — outside an Albuquerque, N.M., motel. Police say the coffin heist occurred early Monday at a Residence Inn. The casket, which was later found, contained the body of the victim’s father-in-law. Police found the U-Haul after searching for a black 2005 Chevy Trailblazer SUV with Oklahoma license plates. As of late Monday, no arrests had been made. (AP)

Tiger cub goes west
LOW APPROVAL
12% SPECIAL GUEST
The National Zoo has sent its Sumatran tiger cub to be with another cub at the San Diego Zoo.
The San Diego cub was brought to the zoo there after it was confiscated earlier in the summer at the Mexican border by someone who wanted it as a pet. The D.C. tiger cub was born July 11. At first, his 8-year-old mother, Damai, cared for him and allowed him to nurse. But that changed. When the cub was 19 days old, zookeepers noticed he was losing weight when he should have been steadily gaining. And Damai started to show she might be in pain or have troubles nursing. Damai’s nursing of the cub was never consistent. So zookeepers started to bottle-feed formula
to the cub. Zookeepers aren’t exactly sure what caused Damai to shun her cub. Damai successfully raised two other cubs in 2013. The D.C. tiger will some day become part of a breeding program to try to save the Sumatran tiger species. The San Diego tiger, because of its unknown genetic history, cannot be bred and will at some point be sent to a sanctuary. “Our first choice would be to have Mom take care of this guy,” Saffoe said of the D.C. tiger cub. But there’s “no normal at a zoo.” So, he said, “this is the next best scenario.” DANA HEDGPETH (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Obama makes surprise visit to D.C. school NATIONAL ZOO
THE DISTRICT It almost seems like a Disneymade movie — two Sumatran tiger cubs from different mothers will grow up together as brothers. The two nameless tiger cubs — one from the National Zoo and the other at the San Diego Zoo — were born within a week of each other in July, and both lack mothers to take care of them. And in a tale of zoo partnership — and a lot of luck — the two cubs will be placed together at the San Diego Zoo, grow up together and learn to become tigers together, according to animal experts. Craig Saffoe, curator of Great Cats at the National Zoo, described the matching of the two young cubs as similar to seeing a shooting star. “It is a one-in-a-million shot that it would have worked out this way,” Saffoe said. He said he expects the cubs to learn to “rough and tumble” together and learn how to approach other tigers. On Monday, the 2-month-old, roughly 15-pound tiger cub left the National Zoo in Washington.
Former President Barack Obama shocked students at McKinley Technology High School in D.C. on Friday by popping in to give them encouragement at the beginning of the new year. ”I do believe that most of the problems we have are going to be solved by you,” Obama told a group of students, according to an Instagram video posted on his account. In the video, a small group of students can be seen gasping in surprise as Obama walks into a room with a cheery “How’s it going, everybody?” (AP)
The proportion of D.C. residents who approve of President Trump, by far his lowest rating in the U.S. A new SurveyMonkey poll found Trump’s approval was at 40 percent nationally, with the highest approval in Wyoming, at 59 percent. D.C. hating on Trump is no surprise: Only 4 percent of the city voted for him. (EXPRESS)

Hogan floats plan to help fund Metro Md. gov. offers $500M extra if Virginia, D.C. and feds do the same TRANSPORTATION Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan upended the regional debate over Metro funding Monday by offering to give the transit system an extra $500 million over four years if Virginia, D.C. and the federal government all do the same. The Republican governor’s proposal, made in a letter delivered Monday morning to Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, both Democrats, narrowed their differences over funding and appeared to increase chances that the region could agree on a plan. But it remains to be seen whether the other three parties — especially Virginia and the federal government — will go along. Hogan’s action marks a dramatic reversal from his position in a contentious, closed-door regional summit two weeks ago. There, Hogan shocked McAuliffe and Bowser by saying Maryland would not give Metro any additional funds beyond what it already contributes each year. He said the agency eats up an excessive portion of Maryland’s transportation spending and that he would not raise taxes to give it more. While Hogan switched his

stance in regard to more money for Metro, the letter reiterated his opposition to new taxes to raise the funds and complained that Maryland contributes more than its fair share to the struggling transit agency. Hogan’s about-face appears prompted partly by the intense criticism his earlier opposition drew, both from other regional actors and from a strongly worded editorial in The Washington Post headlined, “Larry Hogan to Metro: Drop Dead.” Hogan is expected to seek reelection next year, and an antiMetro stance could hurt him in vote-rich Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. But a Maryland official suggested Hogan had taken the adamant position at the summit as a bargaining ploy at the start
of what he expected to be a prolonged negotiation. The official, who asked not to be identified to speak candidly about a sensitive issue, noted that Hogan earlier had switched positions to support building the light-rail Purple Line, after steps were taken to reduce the cost to the state. Hogan is “always negotiating,” said the official. If Virginia, the District and the federal government embrace Hogan’s proposal, it will go a long way toward raising the additional money Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld says the transit agency needs for new equipment and maintenance to keep the system safe and reliable. Wiedefeld says Metro needs an additional $500 million a year, and Hogan’s plan would match that. ROBERT McCARTNEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Report: U-Va. ill prepared for white nationalist rally CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. University of Virginia police relied on incomplete intelligence ahead of a march of torch-wielding white nationalists on campus and failed to enforce prohibitions on fires, according to a report released Monday. The report, compiled by a group of deans and other leaders of the Charlottesville university, focuses on how U-Va. handled the march on Aug. 11, the night before a larger rally in the city’s downtown that erupted into violence. Hundreds of white men carrying tiki torches descended on the campus, shouting racial slurs as they marched. At one point, they confronted a small group of counter-demonstrators, and police said several people were injured.

White nationalists marched on the University of Virginia’s campus the day before a deadly rally on Aug. 12.
The nighttime march wasn’t publicized the way the Aug. 12 rally was. In the lead-up to the weekend, the university relied on intelligence from a state law enforcement hub, the report said. The report also said the police
“over-relied” on information provided by white nationalist organizers, which turned out to be “deliberately misleading.” In addition, the report said police weren’t aware they could enforce university limits on open burns or a state law prohibiting burns with the intent to intimidate. The university group is continuing to review other aspects of the weekend, and U-Va. has also hired an outside firm to conduct a separate review. “Going forward, the University of Virginia and higher education institutions across the nation must be prepared to respond to situations in which violence and intimidation accompany demonstrations and protests,” the report said. Marking 9/11, Trump says terrorists can’t hide

NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump said Monday that terrorists have “nowhere to hide” as he marked the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. “These are horrible, horrible enemies — enemies like we’ve never seen before,” Trump said during remarks at the Pentagon. “But we’re ensuring they never again have a safe haven to launch attacks against our country,” he said. “We are making plain to these savage killers that there is no dark corner beyond our reach, no sanctuary beyond our grasp, and nowhere to hide anywhere on this very large Earth.” In his first commemoration of the attacks as president, Trump did not use the campaign trail catchphrase “radical Islamic terrorism,” which military leaders, among others, have discouraged as unhelpful. He also did not mention his proposed temporary ban on immigration from several Muslim-majority nations, which he has said is needed to keep the U.S. safe from terrorism. “The horror and anguish of that dark day were seared into our national memory forever,” Trump said. “It was the worst attack on our country since Pearl Harbor

Bannon: Firing of Comey was historic mistake Former White House strategist Stephen Bannon believes the firing of FBI Director James Comey by President Trump was the biggest mistake “maybe in modern political history.” Bannon made the statement during an online segment of his interview with “60 Minutes” broadcast Sunday. The statement was extraordinary considering all the political mistakes made in “modern history,” including but not limited to the Watergate cover-up by President Richard Nixon and President Bill Clinton’s dalliance with Monica Lewinsky. “I don’t think there’s any doubt that if James Comey had not been fired,” Bannon told interviewer Charlie Rose, “we would not have a special counsel.” “We would not have the Mueller investigation in the breadth that clearly Mr. Mueller is going,” he added, referring to special counsel Robert Mueller’s appointment to investigate any possible connection between Trump or his campaign with Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on May 17 in the wake of Comey’s dismissal by Trump on May 9. People have said Mueller’s team is looking at the decision to fire Comey, which some have argued could be interpreted by prosecutors as part of an effort to obstruct justice. FRED BARBASH

nation+world U.S. Supreme Court grants temporary stay maintaining travel ban IMMIGRATION U.S. officials can at least temporarily continue to block refugees with formal assurances from resettlement agencies from entering the United States, after the Supreme Court intervened again Monday to save a piece of President Trump’s travel ban. Responding to an emergency request from the Justice Department, Justice Anthony Kennedy stopped an earlier federal appeals court ruling that had allowed refugees with a formal assurance to enter the country. Kennedy, who handles cases
on an emergency basis from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, ordered those suing over the ban to respond by noon today, and he indicated that the appeals court ruling in their favor would be stayed “pending receipt” of their response. The Supreme Court’s decision came not long after the Justice Department asked the justices to act. That filing, by Acting Solicitor General Jeffrey B. Wall, demonstrated the lengths to which the government is willing to go to impose its desired version of the ban, even before the high court takes up in earnest next month whether the measure is lawful at its core. At issue is whether the president can block a group of about

Trump’s travel ban to take effect. The government initially sought to block grandparents and other extended family members of people in the U.S. from entering — as well as refugees with formal assurances — though a federal district judge stopped it from doing so. The Supreme Court in July largely upheld that ruling, though it put on hold the portion dealing with refugees. Last week, a federal appeals court panel weighed in, deciding that the administration could block neither grandparents nor refugees with assurances. The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to step in again on Monday — though only to block refugees.

Officials said Monday that Irma appears to have cut power to a majority of the state’s 20.6 million residents — and that they had no clear answer on when the lights would come back on. “More than half of the population of Florida is out of power would be my guess,” Eric Silagy, president and chief executive of Florida Power and Light (FPL), the state’s largest utility, said at a news briefing Monday. Silagy said as many as 9 million people are affected by his company’s outages — and while it supplies power to about half the state, it is not the state’s sole utility. Shawna Berger, a spokeswoman for Duke Energy, said 1.2 million of its customers were without power in Florida, and noted that if you multiply that number by 2.5 — per the latest Census data, she said — that indicated 3 million people were affected. Florida officials said two-thirds of all power company customers statewide lacked power on Monday, totaling more than 6.5 million customer accounts. Since

if crews need to rebuild parts of the system. The utility had sent out 19,500 workers across Florida to restore power, Silagy said. The utility is also trying to secure more line and vegetation crews from out of state. Because of the storm’s size, FPL crews were not able to start restoration efforts until late Sunday night, Silagy said. Even as millions waited to see when power companies could
navigate debris-strewn roads and restore their access to electricity, Irma surged ever onward, sweeping rain bands through Florida’s core and threatening a dangerous storm surge in the populous Tampa Bay area and along the Gulf Coast. Torrential rain fell in the Florida panhandle, as well as Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said the city was spared “a punch

in the face” as Irma swung farther from the city. But he said emergency teams were deployed to keep people off the streets “when that surge comes.” One positive forecast for Florida: The rain threat had diminished for most of the state by Monday, save the northernmost portions, according to the National Hurricane Center. Irma is expected to keep losing force as it continues inland, and forecasters say it should be a tropical depression by Tuesday afternoon. But the storm maintained its remarkable reach, with tropical-storm-force winds reaching more than 400 miles. PERRY STEIN, MARK BERMAN AND KATIE ZEZIMA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TV correspondents face Irma’s dangers head-on Journalists get pelted by a storm they warn viewers to stay out of MEDIA It’s a paradox of hurricane coverage: People on television spend days warning the public to get out of harm’s way, then station their correspondents squarely in the middle of howling wind and rain and hope they don’t get hurt. That was the case throughout Sunday’s gripping coverage of Hurricane Irma’s assault on Florida. Journalists were the shock troops allowing the nation to experience the storm from the comfort of their living rooms. Networks all brought their top teams in on the weekend for
non-stop special coverage. Yet when a huge tree limb crashed to the ground behind NBC’s Gabe Gutierrez, forcing him to scurry away during a live shot, it illustrated the danger many journalists faced. Network executives were one flying projectile away from a tragedy that would have them facing hard questions about whether they were placing a quest for good TV and ratings above public safety. Several journalists sought the security of balconies that blocked some of the wind or, like NBC’s Kerry Sanders, a concrete parking garage. Yet many felt they couldn’t convey the storm’s power without showing themselves getting buffeted by the elements. The rain “does seem like it’s
getting shot through a fire hose at you,” said CNN’s Chris Cuomo, assigned to Naples, Fla. NBC’s Miguel Almaguer had a yellow tow line, one end wrapped around his waist and the other around a concrete pillar. ABC’s Gio Benitez also employed a rope. CNN’s Kyung Lah gripped a metal railing. Others struggled to keep their footing. “I’m just taking a knee for a second,” said Sanders said when the wind got too intense. The wind blew The Weather Channel’s Mike Bettes several steps in Naples. But there was a payoff when he spotted a glimpse of the sun. “After getting beaten and bruised and battered, there is the eye,” he said. “That is nice.” DAVID BAUDER (AP)
As Florida residents fled Hurricane Irma over the weekend, some Tesla owners got a surprise from the automaker to help them get out of the danger zone. On Saturday, Tesla began pushing a software update that increased the battery capacity of some Model S sedans and Model X SUVs for owners in evacuation areas. Those models are equipped with 75 kilowatt-hour batteries, but cars whose owners opted for a cheaper price have software that restricts their battery life. Electrek reports that the upgrade, which Tesla said will be reversed on Sept. 16, added about 30 to 40 miles to the vehicles’ driving range. (TWP)

In Caribbean, Irma survivors scramble for aid IRMA With ports mended and weather cleared, officials still struggled Monday to get aid to Caribbean islands devastated by Hurricane Irma when it was a Category 5. At least 34 people were reported to have been killed in the region, including 10 in Cuba. State media in Cuba said most of those died in Havana, where seawater surged deep into residential neighborhoods. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson defended his government’s response to the crisis. Britain sent a navy ship and almost 500 troops to the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and the Turks and Caicos islands. The U.S. government said it was sending a flight Monday to evacuate its citizens from St. Martin. Evacuees were warned to expect long lines and no running water at the airport. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, residents of the capital of Charlotte Amalie reported long lines for basic supplies. “You get nothing from the city. Nothing. No food. No water. Everything is closed,” said Rene Concepcion, who waited for up to three hours to get water. In addition, a 6 p.m.-to-noon curfew gives people just enough time to get only one essential item, said Gladys Collins. “That ... is the time that we have to do whatever we need: water, food, gasoline,” she said. “Everywhere that you go is a long line.” ANDREA RODRIGUEZ AND DESMOND BOYLAN (AP)

The wrong route: Deep passing isn’t offense’s strength In two red zone trips, Washington managed a field goal and a devastating late interception. Cousins connected on just one of eight deep throws Sunday, a 16-yarder to Ryan Grant. Long attempts have never been Cousins’ strength, but last year DeSean Jackson’s speed made the long ball work. Crowder, Thompson and Reed have always been Cousins’ safety net in the middle of the field. Cousins had three completions of more than 20 yards, and all three came from short throws, including a 29yard touchdown that Thompson created with a spin move. The short game is where Cousins thrives. The Redskins can’t exclusively throw dumpoff passes and slants because defenses would just sit on those routes, but the offense at least needs to be more discerning with its deep shots. An awful effort from the offensive line certainly didn’t help. Cousins often threw off his back foot and released the ball high because he faced persistent pressure. In his return to play-calling,

In the first game of the year, the offseason allure of showcasing two tall receivers proved to be nothing but fantasy football for the Redskins. In a 30-17 loss to the Eagles on Sunday, Terrelle Pryor Sr. was inconsistent and Josh Doctson was nowhere to be found. When the Redskins play the Rams at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum this weekend, they should return to the scheme that best suits quarterback Kirk Cousins — dialing up mid-range throws to Jordan Reed, Chris Thompson and Jamison Crowder. Don’t force the ball to Pryor, who lost a sure touchdown somewhere in the sky early Sunday. Pryor had 1,007 yards last year but caught just 55 percent of his targets (77 of 140). He posted the same percentage Sunday with six grabs on 11 targets. Disregard Doctson, too. He’s in the doghouse and played on just 32 percent of the offense’s snaps against Philadelphia.
Last weekend gave us the first answers to an offseason’s worth of questions. For example, how would the Raiders’ once-retired running back do? Here are three things that we learned.
In his Redskins debut, receiver Terrelle Pryor Sr. hauled in just 55 percent of his targets, the same catch rate he posted last season with Cleveland.
Divvying up receptions Here’s how Redskins receivers fared Sunday, listed in the order of times they were targeted. (EXPRESS) Terrelle Pryor Sr.: 11 targets (six catches for 66 yards) Jordan Reed: 8 targets (five catches for 36 yards) Jamison Crowder: 7 targets (three catches for 14 yards) Ryan Grant: 6 targets (four catches for 61 yards) Chris Thompson: 5 targets (four catches for 52 yards, one TD) Brian Quick: 1 target (one catch for 11 yards) Rob Kelley: 1 target (0 catches)
coach Jay Gruden asked too much of Cousins. The offensive output in the preseason and season opener against the Eagles has proved that Jackson and Pierre Garcon made Cousins look good with the long ball last year. The offense needs to utilize more quick passes and bubble screens and put an emphasis on dink-and-dunk throws in Los Angeles on Sunday. Otherwise, the passing game will remain grounded.
3 Goff could be for real Facing a Colts team missing cornerback Vontae Davis, Rams QB Jared Goff hit 72.4 percent of throws for 306 yards. His rookie highs were 65 percent and 235 yards.
2 Jaguars D has teeth Jacksonville went to Houston and held the Texans to 203 yards of offense, the lowest total Sunday. Calais Campbell had four sacks — a franchiserecord 3.5 in the first half.

September still matters
The Nationals clinched the NL East on Sunday, but Max Scherzer said the team’s work in the regular season isn’t done yet. “These games may be meaningless to you, but they aren’t to us,” he said with Champagne sliding down his face. While the club can rest key players, align starting pitching and give the big weapons in the bullpen a much-needed break, these next three weeks do carry meaning. Here are five storylines to monitor down the stretch. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

At-bats for Werth

Harper’s health
Dusty Baker pointed out that the Nationals (88-55) still have a chance to catch the Dodgers (92-51 entering Monday) for the best record in baseball. By doing so, they would secure home-field advantage throughout October and get a firstround meeting with the winner of the wild-card game instead of the NL Central champion. The Dodgers had lost 15 of 16 ahead of a late Monday game at the Giants. Los Angeles arrives for three games at Nationals Park next weekend, but the Nationals will not throw their All-Star starters in that series.
Max Scherzer is a legitimate candidate to repeat as the NL Cy Young Award winner. Entering Monday, he led the NL in strikeouts per nine innings (12.06), had the second-best ERA (2.32) in the league behind Clayton Kershaw (2.15) and was holding opposing hitters to a .175 batting average, which was 17 points lower than any other qualified starter in the majors. Bryce Harper has probably missed too much time to win another MVP. Daniel Murphy has not quite been dominant enough. But NL WAR leader Anthony Rendon could work his way into that discussion. w
Since returning from the broken foot that cost him three months, left fielder Jayson Werth has played in eight games and sat out six, bothered by a sore shoulder caused by an errant fastball on his rehab assignment. That shoulder seemed to hobble Werth as he struggled through an 0-for-20 slump ahead of a series with the Braves, which starts tonight (7:05, MASN). Werth is entering his last guaranteed postseason in D.C. and has said this October will make or break his perception of his tenure. His role in October likely depends on how that shoulder — and his bat — bounce back.
In less than a month, the Nats will have to decide on their 25-man roster for the NL Division Series. Howie Kendrick, Adam Lind, Jose Lobaton and Wilmer Difo are all bench locks. If backup center fielder Brian Goodwin isn’t healthy, Washington could take Andrew Stevenson, Rafael Bautista or even young Victor Robles. Pedro Severino may be a late-game, pinch-running option. The bullpen should include Matt Albers, Oliver Perez and Enny Romero. Sammy Solis, Matt Grace, Joe Blanton and Shawn Kelley will spend the next few weeks on a strange playoff bubble.
The most important story of the past three weeks might be the status of Bryce Harper as he recovers from a bruised knee and strained calf. Harper hasn’t been seen doing any kind of agility work outside of walking up and down stadium stairs last week. The team hasn’t committed to a timetable for his return, but Harper told a young fan at the Nationals’ season ticket event Saturday that he will play in the playoffs. The Nats would like to get Harper at-bats, but the minor league season has ended and the instructional league is in peril due to Hurricane Irma.

Consecutive scoreless innings that Nationals reliever Matt Albers has pitched. Albers, 34, was a nonroster invite to spring training and was called up to Washington’s roster a week into the regular season. The right-hander has lo lowered his ERA to 1.66, the eighth-lowest in the majors among qualified relievers entering M Monday. He’s striking out a career-high 9.61 hitters per nine innings. The NFL moved quickly Monday in hopes of reversing a federal judge’s decision to block the league’s six-game suspension of star Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott over a domestic violence case in Ohio. The league asked the judge who ruled in Elliott’s favor to stop the preliminary injunction that let last year’s NFL rushing leader play while the case is in court. A notice of appeal was also filed with the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. The NFL’s latest filings came about 12 hours after Elliott rushed for 104 yards in a 19-3 win over the Giants. (AP)

David Johnson will likely undergo wrist surgery The Cardinals lost way more than a game in their season opener in Detroit. Star running back David Johnson dislocated his wrist, coach Bruce Arians said, and probably will require surgery. Arians said Johnson is seeking a second opinion. If the original prognosis is confirmed, the injury is the same as the one that sidelined rookie T.J. Logan in the preseason. While he didn’t give a timetable for Johnson, Arians said Logan is expected to be out eight to 12 weeks. Kerwynn Williams and Andre Ellington are the primary backs in Johnson’s absence. (AP)

Former Maryland star Kristi Toliver poured in a season-high 32 points, including nine 3-pointers, to lead the Mystics to a win in New York. The guard won a WNBA title with the Los Angeles Sparks last season, when she played more of a complementary role to Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike. Minnesota’s Sylvia Fowles is an MVP candidate who stands 6 feet 6, is a three-time Defensive Player of the Year and finished the regular season second in rebounds (10.4 per game) and tied for second in blocks (2.0 per game). Washington’s Krystal Thomas, right behind Fowles with 9.6 boards per game, will battle her.
The Mystics acquired Elena Delle Donne, the 2015 WNBA MVP, in February to help fuel a postseason push. She was the fourth-leading scorer in the regular season (19.7 points per game) despite ankle and thumb injuries. In two playoff games this year, she’s averaged 21.5 points and 10.5 rebounds. The Mystics have never appeared in the WNBA Finals. The other three teams left — the Lynx, Sparks and Phoenix Mercury — have each won three titles. Minnesota has appeared in the finals five times in the past seven years. Phoenix is looking particularly tough with Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi.

How to go plant-based
Be good to your bones
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach for the confusing label PERSPECTIVE The concept of eating a “plantbased” diet is tossed around frequently, but it’s a label that can be confusing. Some people shy away from the notion because they assume that plant-based is code for vegan. On the other hand, it’s easy to think that eating all plants and no animals guarantees that your diet is healthful and nutritious. But does it? The research in support of plant-based diets is bountiful, which is likely because of what they include — vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber — as much as what they don’t — excess saturated fat. But one limitation of much of that research is that it defines “plant-based” as vegetarian. Plant-based diets can take many forms, from vegan to vegetarian to flexitarian to omnivore. The common denominator is that they make plant foods the focal point of the plate. If you choose to eat animal foods like meat, poultry, fish, eggs or dairy, they play smaller, supporting roles. The other limitation is that the research tends to treat all plant-based diets equally, without regard to food quality. The fact is that many people focus on avoiding certain foods but are blind to whether the rest of their diet is nutritionally adequate. This is one of the perils of demonizing specific foods — no one food makes or breaks a diet, and it’s your overall eating pattern that matters most for health. That’s not the message you get
from many of the recent plantbased diet “documentary” films. The latest, “What the Health,” blames animal foods for every ill known to man and woman. While excessive amounts of animal protein and fat aren’t good for us, that doesn’t mean that moderate amounts in the context of a plant-rich diet are harmful. An excessive amount of anything isn’t good, and a cupcake is a cupcake, even if it’s vegan. A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology seems to agree. It found that when it comes to the plants you eat, quality does count — and omnivores have a place at the plant-based table, too. The study — which came from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and included more than 200,000 women and men from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study — aimed to get a clearer answer on both quantity and quality of plant foods needed to see a benefit for health. This included the role of animal foods. Researchers measured what proportion of each participant’s diet was plant-based, and whether those plant foods were healthful — vegetables, fruits, whole grains — or unhealthful — sweetened beverages, refined grains, sweets. They found that a diet rich in healthful plant foods is associated with a substantially lower risk of developing heart disease, while a plant-based diet that emphasizes less-healthful plant foods
On (and off) your plate To reap the benefits of a plantbased diet while not completely going cold turkey, eat more: Whole grains and foods made from whole grain flour; fruits and vegetables; nuts, beans and lentils; vegetable oils like olive oil; and healthy animal foods like fish, dairy (other than ice cream) and eggs. Eat less: Fruit juices and sugar-sweetened beverages; refined grains and foods made from white flour; french fries, chips and baked or mashed potatoes; sweets (candy, pastries, desserts); less-healthful animal foods (butter, lard, meat, ice cream). C.D.
is associated with increased risk of heart disease. Those eating a nutritious plant-based diet while also being more physically active fare even better. In a 2016 study, the researchers found similar results for the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study also supports the value of a plant-rich diet even for omnivores. Individuals who ate the least plant foods were eating about five or six servings of animal foods per day, while those with the most plant foods were eating three servings of animal foods. This means that reducing animal foods even slightly while increasing healthy plant foods has benefits for preventing heart disease and diabetes. CARRIE
Although the milk mustache has led many of us to believe that milk is the magic bullet of bone health, there are better ways to build bones. Cow’s milk is a good source of calcium and is often fortified with vitamin D, yet it’s not for everyone. But there are alternative bone-building nutrients. Leafy greens such as spinach and kale are good options, as well as broccoli, artichokes and other green vegetables. Nuts and seeds provide calcium and zinc. Homemade bone broth is a flawless bone-building food. Beans such as chickpeas, navy beans and edamame are a great source of calcium. Salmon, sardines and other oily fish are good foods for bones because they help reduce inflammation while also providing vitamin D and other nutrients. Inflammation can strip minerals such as calcium from the bones. CASEY SEIDEN SEIDENBERG (TWP)

Should I pay for a cashier’s mistake? Q. I was doing some back-to-school shopping at the mall and I bought three shirts, a pair of jeans and some socks. A few hours later, I was going over my purchases at lunch (in a different end of the mall) and realized the jeans were not on the receipt. Somehow the cashier must not have scanned it. I rationalized that it would be unfair to punish myself for the store’s mistake and decided not to return and correct it. Should I have gone back? WONDERING Wow, I’m being entrusted with an ethics question! But this one is pretty clear-cut. Yes, it was their mistake, and there was no intention or even knowledge on your part as it happened or in the immediate aftermath. So, it’s not like you’re a thief. But it’s a stretch to act like it’s a “punishment” to walk across
a mall to pay for merchandise that doesn’t rightfully belong to you. Sometimes, putting effort forth for the sake of nameless others — even if they’re a nameless corporation, and even if it was their mistake — is just part of what life requires.
loves hitting and insulting people, without any real consequences. Last time, he insulted me by pointing out a physical flaw. But his mom is one of my best friends from college and I would be devastated if I lost her! I’m 38, but the last time I saw them, I spent the car ride home crying over something a 6-year-old said to me. CANNOT STAND HIM This is not some random person at a restaurant whose kid is a nightmare — this is your close friend of two decades. You owe it to her to talk about this, not just for your own relationship but for his future. Pick a private, relaxed time, acknowledge the awkwardness and be specific. “Johnny said some things that really bothered me. I don’t want to hurt you, but I find it tough to be around him when he treats me this way. I want to find a way for this not to hurt our friendship, and also to support you in dealing with this.” Be prepared for defensiveness at first — after all, this is the age of “My bullying sociopath is a gifted trailblazer!” — but at least you will know you’ve planted a seed. If the seed fails to grow, make provisions to see her alone only.

Kaling’s comedy series wasn’t woke, but made a mark in its own way
http://clinicaltrials.gov
PERSPECTIVE Today, “The Mindy Project” returns to Hulu for its sixth and final season. Now seems as good a time as any, then, to lament “The Mindy Project.” It was never quite the show you wanted it to be. With a brown woman in the leading role, it qualifies as an old head in television’s newly diverse landscape. But even if you admire actress and creator Mindy Kaling, you have to acknowledge that “The Mindy Project,” a medical comedy about a New Yorker leading a romantic life that bordered on bedlam, was never that woke. “I have to become the United Nations of shows?” Kaling asked in a 2013 Entertainment Weekly interview, responding to criticism that her character, Mindy Lahiri, dated only white men. In today’s TV landscape, populated by “Black-ish” and “Insecure” and “Master of None” — shows that present the everyday lives of people of color both as unique and utterly normal — it couldn’t have hurt, Min.
Nevertheless, the show still managed to be one of the most subversive television shows about womanhood since . . . well, since ever. Because before it came along, there had never been a show written by and starring an Indian-American woman. This is what Mindy Lahiri did represent: a modern, ambitious working woman who thought very highly of herself, even if the world didn’t. In one episode, she declared herself “a 10 in Chicago.” But she also delivered some of the show’s sharpest, most memorable barbs under her breath, including a few asides about race — quick, stabby little missives directed at both whites (when her boyfriend’s mother assumes that Mindy, an ob-gyn, is the house cleaner) and at the privilege of Indian-Americans (when Mindy presumptively declares that a group of basketball players must be interested in her because black men love Indian women). As “The Mindy Project” ends, we can’t help but feel the loss of a role for an Indian-American woman that was nuanced, that had some promise. Even if it wasn’t always perfect. LAVANYA RAMANATHAN

entertainment Her new book casts blame and relives her unexpected 2016 loss
BOOKS In a candid new book out today, Hillary Clinton relives her stunning defeat to Donald Trump, admitting to mistakes and defending campaign strategy even as her return to the stage refocuses attention on a race Democrats still can’t believe they lost. In “What Happened,” which was obtained by The Associated Press ahead of its release, Clinton
is unsparing in her assessment of the president, calling him “a clear and present danger to the country and the world.” She says she considered saying to Trump, “Back up, you creep. Get away from me,” when he loomed over her during a general election debate. Clinton addresses common criticisms of her campaign, including the idea that she ignored Midwestern turf where Trump picked up enough white working-class voters to win several battleground states. “Some critics have said that everything hinged on me not

campaigning enough in the Midwest,” she writes. “And I suppose it is possible that a few more trips to Saginaw or a few more ads on the air in Waukesha could have tipped a couple of thousand voters.” Clinton also lays out other factors she believes contributed to her loss: interference from Russian hackers; a divisive primary battle with Bernie Sanders; and even her gender. But her anger is most sharply focused on former
FBI Director James Comey. She writes that all of the theories about why she lost need “to be tested against the evidence that I was winning until October 28, when Jim Comey injected emails back into the election.” But Clinton, who has a reputation for avoiding blame for her failures, says she takes “responsibility for all” of her mistakes. “You can blame the data, blame the message, blame anything you want — but I was the candidate,” she writes. “It was my campaign. Those were my decisions.” BILL BARROW AND JONATHAN LEMIRE (AP)

“These two asked for a pic. And kevinjonas wrote: “Really nice to meet u.” Since the Jonas Brothers group disbanded in 2013, photos of the brothers together have been scarce.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll feel more comfortable in a new environment than you did in one that was quite familiar. This may not be permanent, however. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Someone may not appreciate your attempts to force an agreement between conflicting parties. Still, an agreement must be forged.
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

TODAY: Showers from Irma try to move in from the southwest. A few could get in here during the morning, though for now the chance is only 20 percent to 30 percent, increasing to a 40 percent chance of afternoon showers. With mostly cloudy skies and a light wind from the east, highs should stall in the low 70s.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) The quality of your work must not suffer just because you are trying to increase your output. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’re likely to learn a thing or two about how something is done, but that doesn’t mean you’re ready to give it a try.

Gabrielle Union shared details with Us Weekly about her relationship with her husband, Dwyane Wade. When asked what irritates her most about Wade, Union said: “He doesn’t put the cap back on the toothpaste. I think he does it to annoy me at this point. It gets that weird crust. I’ve tweeted about it, I’ve Instagrammed it. I don’t know.” When asked what she loves most about Wade, she said: “His ass.” (EXPRESS) His ass.
Rihanna kicked off her Fenty Puma 2018 spring-summer collection Sunday during New York Fashion Week with motocross bicycles flying in the air, ascending above a display of pink mountains and sand. The singer rode on the back of a bike — in rock star form, with one hand displaying the sign of the horns and her tongue sticking out — after the models strutted around the race car-like catwalk at the Park Avenue Armory. Rihanna debuted 50 different looks at the show. The clothes were a mix of fitted and loose pieces, ranging from oversized jackets to tight dresses to shiny swimsuits. (AP)
