BRANDING

‘You know, that place by the old mall’ is too long Now that White Flint Mall is slated for demolition, no one knows what to call the area around it, says Lindsay Hoffman of the Friends of White Flint, a nonprofit that represents nearby businesses, developers and residents. “Some call it North Bethesda, others call it South Rockville, and everyone thinks what they call it is right,” she says. On Thursday, community members met to evaluate new names. Some of the odder options include: NoBeSoRo: Stands for North Bethesda/South Rockville. How you pronounce it is a personal decision. F. Scott District: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s grave is in Rockville. That’s as good a reason as any to name a commercial area after a writer who chronicled the existential void of materialism. The Rock: There are worse namesakes than actor/wrestler Dwayne Johnson. S.D.

Don’t add a 51st star yet For the first time since 1993, the D.C. statehood movement is getting its day in Congress. Experts are scheduled to testify in a hearing today about the New Columbia Admission Act of 2013, which would make “New Columbia” the 51st state. It’s unlikely to go far: Even if the bill makes it to the Senate floor and passes, there’s the Republican-controlled House to contend with. Here’s a look at statehood’s prospects, and those of other means to improve D.C.’s lot. R.S. Budget and legislative autonomy Let D.C. set its own budget and make its own laws without Congressional oversight.

Kimberly Perry, the president of advocacy group DC Vote, argues that budget and legislation are the “low-hanging fruit” of independence — the first logical steps toward full statehood. Budgetary autonomy is likelier to come first, Perry says, but even that will require some major work to get passed.

Lino Stracuzzi’s flag has a 51st star that’s bigger than the rest “to celebrate our fight to become our 51st state,” he told The Washington Post in 2013.

Voting rights

Full statehood

Retrocession

Gain some, or full, representation in Congress.

Voting rights AND legislative and budget autonomy.

The last serious effort on this front was the District of Columbia House Voting Rights Act of 2009, which would have given D.C. a seat in the House of Representatives. However, a rider that would have loosened the city’s strict gun laws ultimately scuttled the effort. The Senate has supported voting rights in the past, which Perry says is cause for optimism.

This is the Holy Grail for many activists, who note that D.C. has a bigger population than two states (Wyoming and Vermont), but opponents raise both constitutional and practical concerns. So it isn’t likely any time soon, and probably not without some major concession to make up for the fact that D.C. is about as blue as they come.

Give D.C. back to Maryland, except for land on which the White House, U.S. Capitol and other key buildings stand.

This could be a more feasible approach, because it wouldn’t require Congress to recognize a new majority-Democratic state. Others suggest treating D.C. as a part of Maryland in terms of Congressional representation only. But: “Leaders of Maryland and D.C. have been very vocal that there is no interest in a partnership,” Perry says.

D.C. race rests on uninspired voters With Gray already gone, it’s hard to tell what will drive mayoral election THE DISTRICT In April, Alison Schafer went to the polls to get rid of D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, whom she says embarrassed her city by running a corrupt campaign in 2010. Mission accomplished: “I sort of feel like I’ve done my job,” she says, even if there is the outstanding matter of the Nov. 4 vote to choose Gray’s successor. “Call me cynical, but I question whether this election really matters,” says Schafer, 51,

Status quo or no? This could be a tight contest in which voters elect the city’s first white mayor (David Catania, left, or Carol Schwartz, center), first openly gay mayor (Catania), or first mayor who isn’t a Democrat (Catania and Schwartz are former Republicans). Or it could run according to script: Democrat (Muriel Bowser) wins, no real contest. (TWP)

Some supporters of each candidate say they don’t believe any early indications of where voters stand because they don’t think voters really stand anywhere. “I don’t see any of them generating enthusiasm,” says Howard Croft, who has watched D.C. elections during years as professor at the University of the District of Columbia. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said an agreement has been reached on budget cuts for the next two years. McAuliffe and leaders of the General Assembly plan to release details today. Md. police focus search; children’s dad suspects woman is off her meds

TODAY September 15th

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD. Catherine Hoggle, the 27-yearold Montgomery County woman who was found Friday night after being missing for days, was questioned for more than 16 hours by detectives Saturday but provided no solid information about her missing children, 2-year-old Jacob and 3-year-old Sarah. Hoggle indicated that the children were unharmed, indoors and with someone. The “kids are safe,” she told detectives. But she didn’t offer specifics, and detectives said they were unable to verify her vague statements. On Sunday, police planned to search eight areas around Darnestown, Md. On Saturday, teams searched 16 areas around Clarksburg, Md., but found no evidence. Hoggle, who has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, was arrested and is charged with child neglect, obstruction and hindering. She had been the subject of an intense police search since last Monday. Images of her and her children were widely distributed in media reports and on fliers posted by friends, family and the children’s father. Late Friday, a resident spotted Hoggle in Germantown, Md., and

got in touch with police. When they arrived, she tried to flee but was caught. Officers said she was carrying a missing-persons flier and was wearing the same clothes she had on when she went missing last Monday. News that Hoggle had been found brought hope that she would lead police to the children. But as Saturday dragged on, that hope faded. The children’s father, Troy Turner, spoke to Hoggle, in hopes that would produce answers, but that also yielded no additional information. Turner said he thinks Hoggle knows where their children are but won’t say. “I can’t even describe what it feels like,” he said Saturday. Turner said it seems clear that she had recently stopped taking medication. He said he hopes that she will resume her medication and it will help her to reveal what she knows about the children’s location. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

When thinking about Olive Garden, the first thing that springs to mind is probably “unlimited salad and breadsticks.” But that might be part of the Italian chain restaurant’s problems, according to an activist investor that owns about 8 percent of Olive Garden’s parent company. Starboard Value said last week that Darden, Olive Garden’s parent company, is doling out breadsticks and salad too liberally — estimating that the chain hands out 700 million breadsticks per year, about three per guest, which has bloated costs to the tune of about $5 million. The analysis was part of a broader criticism of Darden’s handling of Olive Garden. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Justice Minister Mark Golding said Jamaica’s Cabinet has approved a plan to decriminalize marijuana, and legislators are expected to authorize it before the end of the year. The plan includes provisions for the use of marijuana for religious purposes — such as the Rastafarian faith, that of singer Bob Marley. (AP)

Dutch get dirty in sanction protest AMSTERDAM Hundreds of young Dutch men and women turned Amsterdam’s central Dam square into a blizzard of red goop Sunday, as they pelted one another mercilessly with overripe tomatoes. The event was set up as a protest against Russian sanctions blocking imports of European produce. In practice, most participants turned out to experience the joy of smacking someone with tomato pulp at close range. “It was hard in there. It was mean. But it was fun,” said a beaming Lois Bloedjes. “Everything became one big pile of mush. There were people swimming in it on the ground.” Organizer Joep Verbunt said

proceeds will go to tomato growers hurt by the sanctions. The Netherlands vies with Mexico as the world’s largest tomato exporter, and it sent $100 million worth to Russia last year. Dutch farmers have been offered a subsidy to either dispose of excess crops or donate them to food banks. With music pumping from a podium, the participants counted down from 10 to zero. Then a shipping container full of the fruit was emptied into the arena. “It was beautiful,” said participant Dennis de Jong, who exited the arena with tomato chunks in his hair and down his pants. “They have to do this every year.” TOBY STERLING (AP)

The dying sit and wait As the Ebola epidemic explodes, inundated facilities in Liberia have to turn people away

MICHEL DU CILLE PHOTOS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MONROVIA, LIBERIA Steps from a chance at salvation, or at least a less excruciating death, Comfort Zeyemoh walked slowly from the Ebola treatment center Saturday. It was one of only three in a city devastated by the virus. And it was nearly full. Zeyemoh, 22, was not sick enough to gain entry, though she had started vomiting the night before and was feeling weak. Those are telltale signs of Ebola. “They sent us here for a checkup,” her boyfriend, Moses Sackie, said outside the facility run by the aid group Doctors Without Borders. “Now they are telling us to wait for three days.” With each day, the small group of caregivers trying to cope with the worst outbreak of Ebola on record falls further and further behind as the pace of the virus’s transmission rapidly accelerates. Health facilities are full, and an increasing number of infected people are being turned away, left to fend for themselves. The epidemic has killed more than 2,200 people in five African countries and now poses a threat to Liberia’s “national existence,” according to its defense minister. On Friday, 23 people were admitted to a Doctors Without Borders center in Paynesville, on the outskirts of Monrovia; 25 were turned away, said SophieJane Madden, a spokeswoman for the organization. “We’re just running behind the virus, aren’t we?” Madden said. “And taking the sickest people because we don’t have the capacity” for more. The sick arrive each day, hopeful that their timing and symptoms will get them past the gate.

A sick child waits Saturday for workers to remove bodies before she can enter a holding center in Monrovia, Liberia.

Comfort Zeyemoh’s boyfriend, Moses Sackie, shows a doctor’s order for her to get tested in Monrovia, Liberia, but she was turned away Saturday.

Even so, 7 in 10 will die inside, slightly better odds than the 9 in 10 who are dying in the community, Madden said. On Saturday morning, Josh Tugbeh’s luck did not hold. He felt sick and weak, with pain in his joints that made it difficult to walk. “I come here and they say they are not accepting patients,”

A few feet away, her 10-year-old boy, Zennah, sat on a paint can. Both were listless and visibly ill. They felt cold and had been vomiting. Their father had died four days earlier, and Zombo, 36, spent days calling for an ambulance that never came. Finally, her brother paid someone $20 in U.S. currency to bring them to JFK. But the children could not get in. “No one has spoken to us,” said Zombo’s brother, Abraham Sesky. “So we are just sitting. We don’t know.” LENNY BERNSTEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Why we’re talking about him: Salmond is the leader of the Scottish National Party, which is leading the push for Scotland’s independence from Great Britain in a referendum Thursday. Independence? Really? Opinion polls were constantly in favor of remaining in Britain until Salmond trounced Alistair Darling, a former British treasury chief, in a debate in August. The next opinion polls showed likely “yes” voters running almost neck and neck with supporters of the union, then narrowly ahead for the first time. What he’s saying: “Scotland has chosen to believe in itself. … We’ve given ourselves the permission to be bold,” Salmond declared after he led the SNP to a parliamentary victory in 2011. What they’re saying about him: Jonathan Freedland, a British novelist and columnist, said no rival Scottish politician loomed on the horizon capable of eclipsing Salmond: “The more dominant he becomes, the more dominant he is likely to remain.” What’s next: If Scots vote yes to separation Thursday, a clock starts ticking down to March 24, 2016 — the independence day declared by the Scottish government. There is disagreement on many issues — such as divvying up oil reserves and shares of the national debt — and only 18 months to negotiate them. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

STARS OF THE GAME

Niles Paul

Calling on Cousins 41

A POTENTIALLY DEVASTATING INJURY FOR QUARTERBACK ROBERT GRIFFIN III overshadowed an

action-packed performance and the first victory of the season for the Redskins on Sunday. Just

Kirk Cousins went 22-for-33 for 250 yards and two TDs filling in for an injured Robert Griffin III on Sunday.

Kirk Cousins wasn’t the only backup to step up for the Redskins on Sunday. After a crucial fumble in last week’s loss, Paul bounced back with a team-high eight catches for 99 yards and a touchdown as he filled in for an injured Jordan Reed. It’s the second straight game Paul has led the team in receiving yards.

about everything (outside of Griffin’s health) went right for Washington as it thumped the Jag-

uars 41-10 in front of a FedEx Field crowd announced at 80,037. The offense topped the 40-point mark for the first time since the 2012 season and amassed gobs of yardage. The defense racked up sacks left and right (a franchise-record 10, to be exact), and the special

Running back Alfred Morris rushed for two touchdowns, tight end Niles Paul had a career day with 99 receiving yards and a touchdown, Kirk Cousins had two touchdown passes, and linebacker Ryan Kerrigan led the defense with four sacks. But shortly after the game, and as the Redskins players and coaches filed off the field and into the locker room, all thoughts quickly shifted back to the fallen quarterback, who in the first quarter suffered a dislocated ankle that could cost him the remainder of his third NFL season. A recovery timetable will be determined after Griffin has an MRI exam and X-rays today, coach Jay Gruden said after the game. Griffin wasn’t the only offensive starter to succumb to injury on Sunday, however. Wide

receiver DeSean Jackson left the game late in the first quarter with a sprained left shoulder, and in the fourth quarter, starting left guard Shawn Lauvao sprained his right knee. After getting off to a promising

start, Griffin rolled to his right and slipped a diving tackle attempt from Jaguars linebacker Paul Posluszny. But the quarterback’s left foot came down awkwardly after stepping free of Posluszny’s grasp.

Golfer Greg Norman recovering from chain saw accident that nearly cost him his left hand

The quarterback rolled over and lay face down on the sideline, with medical personnel tending to him for roughly five minutes. Meanwhile, before Griffin had even been helped off the ground, Cousins entered the game and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to fullback Darrel Young. After a stagnant first full possession for Cousins and the offense, that unit began clicking and opened the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run from Morris to cap a seven-play, 66-yard scoring drive. Cousins directed an offensive attack that generated 436 yards and 31 first downs while dominating time of possession, 38:40 to 20:59. Read more from Sunday’s game at washingtonpost.com

Ryan Kerrigan Redskins defensive end

The Redskins put pressure on Jaguars QB Chad Henne all day, sacking him a franchiserecord 10 times Sunday. Kerrigan led the way, racking up a team-high four sacks in the win. In 2013, the outside linebacker had a total of 3½ sacks in the last 12 games of the year. (EXPRESS)

WORST OVERREACTION, POSSIBLY: Predictably, the pundits

went crazy for Kirk Cousins, who was a hot topic of conversation while Robert Griffin III struggled in the preseason. “Where there’s tragedy, there’s opportunity,” Boomer Esiason said during the CBS halftime show. “The opportunity right now is for Kirk Cousins to go in there, solidify that position, play like he did …”

WORST OFFENSE: The Jaguars, who didn’t have a first down with seven minutes left in the first half, made the Week 1 Redskins look like the 2013 Seahawks. Jacksonville finished with eight first downs and 148 total yards. BEST BREAK FROM A POPULAR WAIVER WIRE PICKUP: Jaguars

BEST REALITY CHECK: Fellow analyst Tony Gonzalez brought some much needed real talk to CBS’ halftime show. “Let me just say this, they’re playing against the Jacksonville Jaguars so let’s not jump to any conclusions just quite yet, please,” he said. Yeah, what he said. Please.

rookie wide receiver Allen Hurns, who came out of nowhere to catch two touchdown passes in Week 1, bobbled and dropped a sure touchdown pass on the Jaguars’ first possession. Hurns finished with two catches for 13 yards. WORST COVERAGE: In an upset,

it wasn’t Bacarri Rambo. Really. The Jaguars somehow lost track of fullback Darrel Young, who lined up as a receiver on the outside, on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Cousins in the first quarter.

FREDERICK BREEDON (GETTY IMAGES)

Best & worst from the Redskins’ win

Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray led Dallas with 29 carries for 167 yards in Sunday’s win over the Titans.

26

10

DeMarco Murray ran for 167 yards and a touchdown, Dan Bailey kicked four field goals, and the Cowboys routed the Titans. The Cowboys haven’t started 0-2 since 2010 when Wade Phillips was fired midway through the season and Jason Garrett was promoted to coach. Dallas scored the first 16 points of the game.

29

10

Buffalo’s dynamic Clemson connection provided the electricity to an already charged-up Bills crowd. In capping a home opener celebrating the franchise’s proud past, C.J. Spiller returned a kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown and rookie Sammy Watkins scored on a 12-yard catch.

30

7

Tom Brady and the Patriots took advantage of Adrian Peterson’s absence and Matt Cassel’s four interceptions, and Chandler Jones returned a field goal he blocked for a touchdown right before halftime to lead a victory over the Vikings. Brady went 15 for 22 for 149 yards, one touchdown and no turnovers.

PATRICK SMITH (GETTY IMAGES)

(SECOND) WORST COVERAGE:

Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne was sacked 10 times by the Redskins on Sunday.

You didn’t think Rambo would escape unscathed, did you? The second-year safety, who took a poor angle and made a poor attempt at a tackle on a long touchdown by Houston’s DeAndre Hopkins in Week 1, took a poor angle and made a poor attempt at a tackle on a long touchdown by Jacksonville’s Marcedes Lewis late in the first half on Sunday. It didn’t help that DeAngelo Hall fell down on the play, but Rambo really needs to brush up on his geometry.

25

14

Ted Ginn Jr. ran 71 yards on a punt return for a go-ahead fourth-quarter touchdown and the Cardinals beat the error-prone Giants despite playing without injured starting QB Carson Palmer. Playing in a regularseason game for the first time since 2010, Drew Stanton led the Cardinals on three long scoring drives.

26

24

Billy Cundiff kicked a 29-yard field goal with three seconds left, giving the Browns a win over the Saints. Cundiff’s kick helped the Browns snap a nine-game losing streak in home openers. QB Brian Hoyer completed several big passes, none bigger than his 28-yarder to Andrew Hawkins with 13 seconds to go.

24

10

Running back Giovani Bernard picked up a Bengals offense missing receiver A.J. Green, turning short passes into big plays, and Cincinnati’s defense held down Matt Ryan in a win over the Falcons. The Bengals won their home opener and improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2006.

TOUCHDOWN KING

Number of touchdowns this season for Redskins fullback Darrel Young, who has one rush for one yard and a score and three catches for 28 yards and a score in two games. Young, who got in the end zone three times in one game in 2013, is tied with running back Alfred Morris for the team lead in touchdowns after the first two games of the year. (EXPRESS) Bengals WR A.J. Green left opening drive with toe injury

21

Antonio Gates had three touchdown catches and the Chargers controlled the tempo to keep Seattle’s offense off the field and upset the defending Super Bowl champions. Gates split two defenders for a 21-yard TD catch late in the third quarter, giving San Diego a 27-14 lead. Philip Rivers was 28 of 37 for 284 yards.

24

17

Terrance Knighton batted away Alex Smith’s fourth-and-goal pass to Dwayne Bowe with 15 seconds left, preserving the Broncos’ win over the scrappy Chiefs. The Broncos’ defense mustered two goal-line stands for the second straight week. Peyton Manning was 21 of 26 for 242 yards and three TDs.

BASKETBALL Kyrie Irving made all six 3-pointers and scored 26 points, and the U.S. repeated as world champion for the first time by crushing Serbia 129-92 on Sunday in the Basketball World Cup. James Harden added 23 for the Americans, who made 11 of 16 3-pointers in a sensationalshooting first half, adding one final romp to a tournament full of them. U.S. eases to gold in worlds that they would be unavailable. But Irving — the tournament MVP — and Harden stuck around, and despite sending the youngest U.S. team since NBA players debuted in 1992, the Americans remained as dominant as ever. They have won 63 straight games and are automatically qualified for the 2016 Olympics. It was the fifth world title for the Americans, tying Yugoslavia for the most all-time. The Americans came in winning by 32.5 points per game and their closest victory was by 21 points over Turkey. They thought they would get a tough game Sunday, but were simply too good. Ramos, Zimmermann lead Nats to victory

Unclear if/when Peterson will rejoin the Vikings

The Nationals won with Jordan Zimmermann on the mound for a ninth-straight start, getting a tworun homer from Wilson Ramos in the seventh inning to beat the Mets. Zimmermann, above, allowed six hits and a walk in 6⅔ innings, helping Washington reduce its magic number for winning a second division title in three years to five. It was Washington’s ninth win in 10 games this season at Citi Field. (AP)

The face of the franchise was nowhere to be found as the Vikings flailed away against the Patriots on Sunday, and it’s not clear when, if ever, Adrian Peterson will rejoin them. The star running back was inactive for the team’s home opener after being charged with child abuse for striking his 4-yearold son with a tree branch. Coach Mike Zimmer repeatedly declined to talk about Peterson after a mistake-filled 30-7 loss. (AP)

Antonio Sabato Jr.

‘The Mindy Project’

Alfonso Ribeiro

ABC AND THINKSTOCK/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

9:30 p.m., Tuesday, Fox

Dancing with … who? Believe it or not, today’s season premiere (8 p.m., ABC) will be the 19th time that “Dancing With the Stars” has played fast and loose with the term “star.” This cycle has what might be the most perplexingly random lineup yet. To make it easier to predict a winner, we evaluated each celebrity’s dance experience and ranked their chances of nabbing the Mirrorball Trophy. LORI McCUE (EXPRESS) 1 Alfonso Ribeiro Partner: Witney Carson

Besides giving the world the gift of “The Carlton Dance” on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Ribeiro has a fair amount of experience, having danced on Broadway and in one of Michael Jackson’s Pepsi commercials. He’s the clear frontrunner here.

involve him taking his shirt off. 4 Bethany Mota Partner: Derek Hough

Mota used her successful YouTube channel to land a fashion line at Aeropostale and a guest-judge spot on “Project Runway.” Being paired with five-time champ Hough is a huge advantage.

2 Lolo Jones Partner: Keoikantse Motsepe

5 Jonathan Bennett Partner: Allison Holker

Olympians usually shine on the “DWTS” floor (see previous winners Apolo Ohno, Shawn Johnson and Meryl Davis for proof) so Jones is in good company.

“Mean Girls’ ” Aaron Samuels has acted here and there since his Plastics days. In October, Buzzfeed reported that he was teaching spin classes in Los Angeles. Hey, they do great things for your leg muscles.

3 Antonio Sabato Jr. Partner: Cheryl Burke

Former model Sabato is memorable for playing “the hot guy” on “General Hospital.” We predict success in all dances that

6 Janel Parrish Partner: Valentin Chmerkovskiy

The “Pretty Little Liars” star told People magazine

that she’s been “in and out of dance classes” for most of her life. That and her bubbly attitude makes her a potential dark horse — it certainly worked for winner Kellie Pickler in 2013. 7 Lea Thompson Partner: Artem Chigvintsev

Before acting in movies, most famously as Marty McFly’s mother in the “Back to the Future” films, Thompson was offered scholarships to several top ballet academies, so she’s definitely a threat. 8 Sadie Robertson Partner: Mark Ballas

Best known as one of the few non-bearded stars of “Duck Dynasty,” Robertson also has a YouTube channel and a fashion line. Hopefully she bows out before producers get the idea of

setting a cha-cha-cha to duck calls. 9 Randy Couture Partner: Karina Smirnoff

The five-time UFC title winner is taking the next step in his career path from mixed martial arts fighter to actor (in the “Expendables” films) to television ballroom dancer. Is this just a publicity stunt? Probably. 10 Tavis Smiley Partner: Sharna Burgess

Smiley has hosted talk shows on PBS, NPR and BET. He told The Huffington Post last week that he never listened to “secular music” or went to dances as a kid because of his religious upbringing. Hopefully he’s caught up since then. 11 Michael Waltrip Partner: Emma Slater

Waltrip has been auto

racing for more than 30 years, and has won the Daytona 500 twice. Decades of sitting in a car may not seem like good practice, but Helio Castroneves won in 2007, so don’t count him out yet. 12 Betsey Johnson Partner: Tony Dovolani

The whimsical fashion designer traditionally marks the end of her runway shows with a cartwheel, which we’ll hopefully get to see on the dance floor. Whether she wins or loses, she’ll have the best style.

With their romance back on track, Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny try to readjust to each other in the workplace in the third season premiere. Meanwhile, Jeremy partners with Peter’s girlfriend for a charity event.

2 ‘Red Band Society’ 9 p.m., Wednesday, Fox

Sir Thomas More: Make the best of it, ‘Utopia’ cast A TV viewer cannot escape “Utopia,” the Fox reality show that had a three-night premiere last week and this week settles into its Tuesday time slot (8 p.m.); five more “special broadcasts” on Fridays (8 p.m.) are also scheduled. On the show, 15 “pioneers” come to an isolated, rustic ranch to build a “new society.” Remote-control cameras record action on the set (which reportedly cost $50 million). For perspective, we turned to the 16th-century philosopher Sir Thomas More, who coined the term and wrote the book “Utopia.”

The show says it has “no rules.” Do we need rules? Love rules without rules.

Could you compose a tweet summing up utopia? Nobody owns anything but everyone is rich — for what greater wealth can there be than cheerfulness, peace of mind, and freedom from anxiety?

I hear you haven’t watched the show yet. What is deferred is not avoided.

Contestants include a cranky handyman, an uptight preacher, a pregnant woman and lots of ladies in bikinis. Who will become the leader? [How can anyone] be silly enough to think himself better than other people, because his clothes are made of finer woolen thread than theirs. After all, those fine clothes were once worn by a sheep, and they never turned it into anything better than a sheep.

Actress Daniele Watts, shown below in her role in “Django Unchained,” wrote in a Facebook post that she was stopped by police last week in Los Angeles while with her partner, Brian James Lucas. Lucas told TMZ that the couple was “making out in a parked car.” Watts said the officers approached her and “accosted her,” using handcuffs. In a Facebook post that included photos of the incident, Lucas said police saw a “white boy and a … black girl” and thought she was a prostitute. ABC says police confirmed that they approached Watts and Lucas after a call from a citizen. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Any advice for the contestants? What part soever you take upon you, play that as well as you can and make the best of it.

ELIZABETH STRINGER KEEFE

blog log

“Can we all go to a Kanye West gig and refuse to stand up, please?” @PHILMANN thinks concertgoers

should take a stand against the latest antics of Kanye West at a Friday concert in Sydney. The rapper stopped performing to yell at fans to stand up — twice. The first time, the fan had a prosthetic limb. The second attendee was wheelchair-bound.

“It’s a 9/11 mystery with a happy ending.”

“It’s time for fans of Epcot’s classic ride, Maelstrom, to let it go. ‘Frozen’ is here.”

BARRY PADDOCK AND MEG WAGNER AT NYDAILYNEWS.COM are

pleased to report a conclusion to a 13-year mystery. On Sept. 11, 2001, Elizabeth Stringer Keefe found a crumpled wedding photo in the World Trade Center wreckage. Every year since, she has attempted to locate the owner of the photo. Through the power of social media, Keefe finally found him Friday. The photo belonged to Fred Mahe, whose office was on the 77th floor of the south tower. He was on the subway on his way into work when the attacks happened. The two connected online and talked on the phone soon after last week’s discovery.

FRANK PALLOTTA AT MONEY.CNN .COM hopes fans of the previous ride

aren’t too disappointed by the news that the Maelstrom is being replaced by a “Frozen” amusement ride. Walt Disney World announced Friday that it has begun construction on the ride, taking over the area of the Norwegian boat ride, at the Norway pavilion of the park’s Epcot center.

“Grandparents keep accidentally tagging Grandmaster Flash in Facebook posts and it’s completely adorable” LUKE BAILEY AT BUZZFEED.COM

has found a surprising oddity of Facebook’s autotagging feature. Grandparents have been tagging the hip-hop artist while attempting to sign off of posts with “Grandma” or “Grandpa.”

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may sense things starting out just a little differently from what you planned, but your comfort level remains high. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may be required to move about a great deal throughout this busy day. If you do have the chance to stay put, choose your base carefully. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You have the chance to see things through another’s eyes, if only for a short time. This can provide you with a valuable reward. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’re not feeling in the most collaborative mood, yet you may be required to work closely with others to achieve your goals.

FRIDAY’S SOLUTION

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

A sense that things are changing in subtle but profound ways is unshakable. It’s time to work toward something permanent. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You can perhaps find a way to do something others consider impossible, though that judgment, of course, is largely subjective. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Take care that you are not talking just to talk. You must share ideas and impart information, but don’t just make noise!

TODAY: After a cool morning start, a quick shift to winds from the south is enough to take the edge off our fall preview — at least for a day. Those southerly winds are light, maybe even calm at times, but should be enough to help keep temperatures moderately high under partly sunny skies. A cold front is approaching the area.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You mustn’t let yourself get wrapped up in what others consider desirable or cool. Your own set of values is most important to you. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Certain colors will impact you more favorably than others; this is nothing new, but today the effect may prove dramatic.
