A new panda cub isn’t due at the zoo

HURRICANE IRMA

“I kind of didn’t hear anything after that. I had to stop and say, ‘Are you serious? Is this real?’ ”

THE DISTRICT The National Zoo announced Thursday that its female giant panda, Mei Xiang, is not pregnant. “A team of reproductive scientists … and Zoo veterinarians artificially inseminated Mei Xiang twice May 25, using sperm collected from Tian Tian,” the zoo’s adult male giant panda, the zoo said in a statement. After monitoring the rise and fall of Mei Xiang’s reproductive hormones, and with no evidence of a cub, the zoo concluded that the panda was not pregnant. She was also showing other signs of being pregnant, including a decline in her appetite, building a nest in her den, sleeping more and reacting to loud noises. The panda house, which had been closed while experts watched Mei’s behaviors, will reopen Saturday.

Officials say Mei Xiang is not pregnant, despite showing earlier signs

Mei Xiang was showing some signs of being pregnant a few months after being artificially inseminated in May by veterinarians at the National Zoo.

Mei Xiang turned 19 in July, and is near the end of her reproductive life cycle, the zoo said, but pregnancy is still possible for her. She has given birth to three surviving cubs: Tai Shan, Bao Bao and Bei Bei. Tian Tian is the father of all three pandas. Tai Shan was born July 9, 2005,

and he now lives in China. Bao Bao was born Aug. 23, 2013, and was moved to China last February. Bei Bei, born Aug. 22, 2015, will move to China by the time he turns 4 years old. The giant panda is native to China, which owns and leases all giant pandas in U.S. zoos. MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Mayor devising plan to shield arrest records

(THE WASHINGTON POST)

PETER HERMANN (TWP)

SALWAN GEORGES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Huma ne Rescue A l l ia nce launched Blue Collar Cats, which pairs feral cats that would otherwise likely be euthanized with businesses and residents struggling with rats. The “employers” agree to provide the feral cats with food, water and outdoor shelter, in exchange for their rodent control services. The program, which has placed 40 cats and has a wait list, has been a success so far, said Erin Robinson, community cat program manager at the Humane Rescue Alliance. Solving the city’s rat problem, District officials and national experts agree, requires preventing the spread of rodents, especially through trash control, rather than concentrating strictly on extermination. It’s too soon to tell whether the city’s efforts are working, Gerard Brown said. But he’s confident they’ll make a dent. “You hear them,” Nate Brown said. “There’s this sound they make. A squeal.” RACHEL CHASON

THE DISTRICT Mayor Muriel Bowser wants to make it easier for people arrested by police to shield their records, proposing sweeping changes to limit what employers, loan officers, landlords and the public can learn about a person’s criminal background. It is the latest effort by D.C. to join at least 20 states in a broad movement to help offenders and people who are arrested, but not convicted, of crimes seal their past run-ins with the law to help them get jobs, secure credit and qualify for housing. Authorities note that even years-old arrests stay in files forever and shape perceptions. “We encounter people who need work and who want to work,” Bowser said Thursday. “Some folks have made mistakes and they have paid the price for it. But they shouldn’t have to pay the price for the rest of their lives.” The mayor said her proposal “is about how more D.C. residents can have access to a clean slate and, therefore, a fair shot at succeeding here in Washington.” Bowser said she plans to hold meetings with public safety experts to discuss various aspects of her proposal before drafting legislation. The chairman of the council’s public safety committee, Charles Allen, and D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine both said they support the mayor’s plan.

More people in D.C. means more rats. The city is waging war on the rodents. THE DISTRICT Nate Brown got married in a small town in Spain on July 1. When he returned home to D.C., ahead of his wife, Ana, he realized he had a problem as soon as he entered his house in Park View. “It ate through all our food,” he said. “Literally, all of it.” The culprit, Brown knew, was a rat. Like many northeastern cities, D.C. has long struggled with rodents. But the problem has reached record levels, driven by a combination of factors. The city’s booming human population, along with hundreds of new restaurants and bars, means more trash. Recent mild winters have meant fewer rats dying from frigid temperatures. And construction across D.C. has disrupted subterranean burrows, sending the creatures scurrying onto sidewalks, into yards and, as Brown knows, into homes. “Even one rat is one rat too many,” said Gerard Brown, program manager for the District Department of Health’s rodent

expressline

control division. (He is no relation to Nate Brown.) Gerard Brown, who has been killing rats in D.C. for 30 years, said the recent uptick is noticeable. Rodents cause property damage, chew on electrical wires that can start fires and can spread disease, although that is extremely rare in cities, he said. The more trash, the more rats, he added. That’s why trash control has become a priority in D.C., where the number of restaurants and bars has jumped about 30 percent, from 1,729 in 2006 to 2,267 in 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The city has taken several steps aimed at decreasing the rodent population, including installing state-of-the-art solar trash cans in “rat hot spots” at an annual cost of $85,000 and offering grants to businesses that want to lease a commercial trash compactor. The 25 solar-powered cans compact trash so it does not overflow and spill onto sidewalks, providing a buffet of rotting

treats for rats. The 32-gallon cans, installed in the Barracks Row and Eastern Market neighborhoods, can compress content up to eight times their size, a spokesman for the Department of Public Works said. The city also launched a pilot program that dispersed 400 trash cans with lids and sensors that alert the Department of Public Works when the cans need to be emptied. Meanwhile, dozens have turned to the natural enemy of rats: cats. In January, the

He’d made public plea for her return; body found in shallow grave MONTGOMERY COUNTY The boyfriend of a pregnant Maryland high school teacher who went missing was held without bond Thursday, a day after he was charged in her murder, and her body was found in a shallow grave. The case received widespread attention when the teacher, Laura Wallen, 31, was reported missing early last week. She was living in the suburb of Olney north Tessier of D.C., and had taught social studies at Wilde Lake High School in Howard County since 2014. Her boyfriend, Tyler Tessier, 32, of Damascus, had stood with her parents Monday at a news conference and made a soulful plea for her safe return. But by then, Wallen had already been killed by Tessier, according to Montgomery County police, who charged him Wednesday in her death. Wallen’s body was found on private property in Damascus. Tessier was believed to be the father of Wallen’s unborn child, according to police, who said

Tessier told them he also was engaged to another woman. Wallen was four months pregnant. Tessier “was not honest with either woman,” Montgomery State’s Attorney John McCarthy said outside the courthouse Thursday. Investigators made “a calculated decision” to allow Tessier to attend the Monday appeal for help finding Wallen, Montgomery Police Chief Tom Manger said Wednesday night. Tessier sat next to Wallen’s mother and father. Detectives were curious about what he would say and how he would say it, according to Manger, who said the family was aware of that decision. Manger said there were no signs on Wallen’s remains to suggest how she was killed. D A N M O R S E , E L L I E S I LV E R M A N A N D DEBBIE TRUONG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

local POLITICS The House on Thursday passed a bill introduced by Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., that would expand the authority of the federal government to deport or detain immigrants who are gang members or even just suspected of gang activity. The legislation, offered as a response to an increase in killings perpetuated by the resurgent MS-13 gang in the Washington region and nationally, would allow officials to take action against suspected gang members regardless of whether they’ve

been convicted of a crime. The bill was slammed by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the American Civil Liberties Union, which argued it would promote racial profiling, erode due process and unintentionally affect others, such as clergy who try to help gang members. The Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act was approved 233 to 175. It drew opposition from the four Democrats who serve alongside Comstock in the Virginia delegation. Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., whose district borders Comstock’s, spoke against

Although the bill is unlikely to pass the Senate in its current form, the White House said President Trump’s advisers would recommend he sign it as is. U-Va. to donate money in rebuke of old KKK pledge The University of Virginia is donating to a medical fund for people injured during last month’s white nationalist rallies, in a rebuke of a donation the Ku Klux Klan pledged to the university nearly a century ago. U-Va. President Teresa Sullivan said the donation of $12,500 is roughly equal in today’s dollars to the $1,000 the KKK pledged in 1921. It’s not clear if the KKK made good on its pledge, but Sullivan says the university wants to acknowledge it in a way that’s “as disagreeable as possible” for any remnants of the hate group. (AP)

nation+world President gets up-close view of Irma’s impact and lauds relief effort NAPLES, FLA. President Trump doled out hoagies and handshakes in the sweltering Florida heat Thursday as he took a firsthand tour of Irma’s devastation. Trump, who was in and out of the state in less than three hours, got an aerial view from his helicopter of water-deluged homes along Florida’s southwestern coast, then drove in his motorcade along streets lined with felled trees, broken traffic lights and shuttered stores on his way to a mobile home community hit hard by the storm.

Walking along a street in Naples Estates with his wife, Melania, the president encountered piles of broken siding and soggy furniture heaped on front porches, and residents who were happy to get a presidential visit. “We are there for you 100 percent,” Trump said before donning gloves and helping to hand out sandwiches to local residents from a lunch line under a canopy. “I’ll be back here numerous times. This is a state that I know very well.” Trump earlier met with federal and state leaders in Fort Myers, where he was brimming with enthusiasm for the state and federal response. “It’s a team like very few people have seen,” he said. “We have been very, very

and how the Federal Emergency Management Agency is responding. Many Florida residents remain swamped and without electricity. Nearly 2.7 million homes and businesses, about 1 in 4 Florida customers, were still without power Thursday. Meanwhile, investigators looking into the deaths of eight residents of a nursing home in Hollywood, Fla., that lost its air conditioning said at least one resident died Tuesday, hours before authorities say they were alerted to the crisis early Wednesday, The Washington Post reported. The revelation adds to questions surrounding the nursing home and how things were able to deteriorate to such an extent.

The Motel 6 budget lodging chain has become the site of a controversial string of immigration arrests in the Phoenix area. According to a report published Wednesday by the Phoenix New Times, employees at two corporate-owned Motel 6 locations said they have been sending guest information directly to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “We send a report every morning to ICE — all the names of everybody that comes in,” one front-desk clerk told the publication. “We push a button and it sends it to ICE.” Motel 6 said the practice was “implemented at the local level without the knowledge of senior management.” Motel 6 added: “When we became aware of it last week, it was discontinued.” ICE agents arrested at least 20 people at the two motels, which are in predominantly Latino neighborhoods, from February to August, dropping by every two weeks, the Phoenix New Times reported. In about a third of the arrest records reviewed by the paper, ICE agents entered the motel without a search warrant. A spokeswoman for ICE in Phoenix didn’t confirm the report. “Those are investigative techniques that we wouldn’t be able to talk about,” she said, adding that these types of administrative arrests happen “all the time.” SAMANTHA SCHMIDT

School shooting suspect had posted gun videos

23 die after blaze traps students and teachers

Eight U.S. special operations forces were injured Thursday during a training exercise at Fort Bragg, N.C., according to an Army spokesman. The soldiers were taken to the Womack Army Medical Center on base for treatment, said Lt. Col. Rob Bockholt, a spokesman for the U.S. Army’s Special Operations Command, which is based at Fort Bragg. Initial reports said the injuries happened in an explosion, but Bockholt said he could not confirm that. A day earlier, eight Marines were rushed to a burn center and seven others also were hospitalized following a fire during training at Camp Pendleton in California. (AP)

The student accused of shooting a classmate to death Wednesday at a high school in Rockford, Wash., and wounding three others had posted videos online showing him playing with guns. Classmates at Freeman High School knew about the videos. Junior Paul Fricke told The Spokane Spokesman-Review newspaper that “we knew he had an assault rifle, because he uses it in his YouTube videos.” Another student described the suspect as obsessed with previous school shootings. A custodian stopped the shooter, possibly preventing more attacks. The wounded victims were expected to survive. (AP)

A fire that blocked the only exit to an Islamic school dormitory killed 23 people, most of them teenagers, on the outskirts of Malaysia’s largest city early Thursday, officials said. A government official said a wall separating the victims from a second exit “shouldn’t have been there.” Barred windows also prevented escape. Firefighters responded at 5:41 a.m. and took an hour to put out the blaze, Kuala Lumpur police chief Amar Singh said. He said the bodies of 21 boys ages 13 to 17 and two teachers were recovered. Fourteen students and four teachers were rescued. (AP)

He’s outlined no specific path for ultimately making that happen. While allowing young people who came to the U.S. illegally to stay in the country is broadly popular, immigration hard-liners consider it amnesty. As a candidate, Trump vowed to repeal the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, an executive action signed by President Obama. Some of Trump’s supporters praised the president for what they see as pragmatism. “He’s to the point he needs to get something done. The Republican Party has failed him miserably,” said Jeff Jorgensen, the GOP chairman in western Iowa’s conservative Pottawattamie County. “Hats off to him. If you need to cross the aisle to get things done, then cross the aisle.” Trump, trying to tamp down criticism that he was acquiescing to his political opponents, insisted he would eventually make good on his promises to his base. “Ultimately, we have to have the wall,” he said. “If we don’t get the wall we’re not doing anything.” JULIE PACE AND STEVE PEOPLES (AP)

POLITICS Few issues have animated President Trump’s ardent supporters more than his pledge to build a wall along the nation’s southern border. Now, Trump’s decision to put that promise aside — at least temporarily — while he pursues a deal with Democrats to protect young immigrants brought to the country illegally might test the limits of that loyalty. Some avid Trump backers praised the president as a pragmatist trying to make deals with whomever he can. But others recoiled at the prospect of Trump joining forces with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on immigration, and seeming to get little in return. Amy Kremer, who founded the group Women Vote Trump, likened the president’s dealmaking with Democrats to one of history’s most notorious political flip-flops: President George H.W. Bush’s broken campaign-trail vow that he wouldn’t raise taxes. “If the wall doesn’t get done and he gives amnesty, he’ll lose the base,” Kremer said. “You’re going to see an absolute revolt.” The worries were sparked by Trump’s startling efforts to forge consensus with Schumer and Pelosi over the fate of nearly 800,000 people brought to the U.S. illegally as children. Trump, Schumer and Pelosi discussed the matter at a private White House dinner Wednesday. On Thursday morning, the president — a former Democrat himself — and the minority leaders appeared largely aligned. Trump said an agreement to allow the young immigrants to stay in

NATIONAL SECURITY North Korea fired another missile from near its capital, Pyongyang, early Friday morning, with the Japanese public broadcaster NHK reporting that it flew over the northernmost Japanese island of Hokkaido. South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said that the missile was launched from a site near Pyongyang and traveled in an easterly direction about 6:30 a.m. local time. The Japanese government was still assessing the launch, but it immediately triggered emergency alerts in Japan. The alerts warned residents that a missile had been launched and to seek shelter. On Thursday, a North Korean state agency had issued an alarming threat to Japan. “The four islands of the [Japanese] archipelago should be sunken into the sea by [our] nuclear bomb,” the Korea AsiaPacific Peace Committee said in a statement carried by the official news agency. Following this launch, South Korea’s president, Moon Jae-in, convened an emergency meeting of his national security council. This was the second time in less than three weeks that North Korea has fired a missile over Japan. On Aug. 28, North Korea fired a Hwasong-12, an intermediate-range ballistic missile technically capable of flying 3,000 miles, sufficient to reach the U.S. territory of Guam. Diplomats’ health issues still baffling

An Iraqi surveys damage after gunmen and a bomber attacked.

At least 83 dead in double attack claimed by ISIS

NATIONAL SECURITY The blaring, grinding noise jolted the American diplomat from his bed in a Havana hotel. He moved just a few feet, and there was silence. He climbed back into bed. Inexplicably, the agonizing sound hit him again. It was as if he’d walked through an invisible wall cutting straight through his room. Soon came the hearing loss, and the speech problems, symptoms both similar and different from others among at least 21 U.S. victims in an astonishing international mystery still unfolding in Cuba. The top U.S. diplomat has called them “health attacks.” New details learned by The Associated Press indicate at least some of the incidents were confined to specific rooms or even parts of rooms with laserlike specificity, baffling U.S. officials who say the facts and the physics don’t add up. “None of this has a reasonable explanation,” said Fulton Armstrong, a former CIA official who served in Havana long before the U.S. reopened an embassy there. “It’s just mystery after mystery

after mystery.” Suspicion initially focused on a sonic weapon, and on the Cubans. Yet the diagnosis of mild brain injury, considered unlikely to result from sound, has confounded the FBI, the State Department and U.S. intelligence agencies. Some victims now have problems concentrating or recalling specific words, several officials said, the latest signs of more serious damage than the U.S. government initially diagnosed. The U.S. first acknowledged the attacks in August — nine months after symptoms were reported. The Trump administration hasn’t identified a culprit or device to explain the attacks, according to current and former U.S. and Cuban officials. Investigators have tested several theories about an intentional attack — by Cuba’s government, a rogue faction of its security forces, a third country like Russia or some combination thereof. They’ve also left open the possibility that an advanced espionage operation went awry, or that there

is some less sinister explanation. Aside from in their homes, officials said, Americans were attacked in at least one hotel, a fact not previously disclosed. An incident occurred on an upper floor of the recently renovated Hotel Capri, a 60-year-old concrete tower in Havana. In several episodes recounted by U.S. officials, victims knew something was happening in real time, and there were strong indications of a sonic attack. Some felt vibrations, and heard sounds — loud ringing or a high-pitched chirping similar to crickets. Others heard the grinding noise. Some victims awoke with ringing in their ears and fumbled for their alarm clocks, only to discover the

ringing stopped when they moved away from their beds. Other victims heard nothing, felt nothing. Later, their symptoms developed. Aside from hearing and speech issues, they included brain swelling, dizziness, nausea and tinnitus. The scope keeps widening. The State Department disclosed Tuesday that doctors had confirmed another two cases, bringing the number of U.S. victims to 21. A handful of Canadian diplomatic households were harmed, too. Many victims have shown improvement since leaving Cuba; some suffered only minor or temporary symptoms. JOSH LEDERMAN, MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN AND MATTHEW LEE (AP)

Norwegians find Viking-era sword

A Norwegian archaeologist says a well-preserved, if rusty, iron sword dating to the Viking era has been found on a mountain in southern Norway. Lars Holger Piloe says the nearly 3-foot sword was found down between rocks with the blade sticking out, and may have been left by a person who got lost in a blizzard and died on the mountain from exposure. Piloe said Thursday that the sword, dating from about A.D. 850 to 950, was found in Lesja, some 170 miles north of Oslo. The sword’s preservation was likely due to the quality of the iron, as well as the cold, dry conditions, he said. (AP)

IRAQ A coordinated attack on a restaurant and a security checkpoint in southern Iraq killed at least 83 people Thursday, most of them inside the restaurant, police and health officials said, in a rare spasm of violence targeting a route used by Shiite pilgrims to visit their holiest shrines. Gunmen wearing military uniforms stormed into a restaurant in Nasiriyah, about 200 miles south of Baghdad, around lunchtime and opened fire, the head of the provincial health department said. Patrons in the eatery included Iranian and Iraqi pilgrims traveling north toward the Shiite shrines in Karbala and Najaf. Moments later, a car driven by a suicide bomber exploded at a police checkpoint near the restaurant, which sits along Highway 1, the road that connects Baghdad with Dhi Qar province, where the attack took place. An additional 93 people were injured in the double attack, for which the Islamic State claimed responsibility in a statement. The terrorist group has been steadily losing territory, most recently Mosul, its largest stronghold, and the smaller city of Tal Afar. Officials have voiced fears that the group would step up its attacks on civilians as its grip on territory weakens. TAMER EL-GHOBASHY AND MUSTAFA SALIM (THE WASHINGTON POST)

REDSKINS CONCERNS

REDSKINS AT RAMS | 4:25 P.M. SUNDAY, FOX

Bringing malaise to L.A.

Washington enters Sunday’s game at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum coming off an ugly 30-17 loss to the Eagles. After thumping

the Colts 46-9 in the debut of coach Sean McVay — the Redskins’ offensive coordinator the previous three years — the Rams are favored by 2.5 points. Washington is desperate for a win with upcoming games against the Raiders and Chiefs making an 0-4 start look possible. These are the matchups that will determine whether the Redskins can get back on track. MIKE JONES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A season-opening loss to the Eagles gave Washington plenty to work on ahead of a long trip for a game in Los Angeles on Sunday. The Redskins must improve in these areas if they want to beat the Rams.

The first-year head coach meets his old boss. Gruden and McVay can downplay this meeting, but this is a difficult situation for Gruden and his staff. McVay worked under Gruden for three years in Washington, helped design the Redskins’ offense and knows the personnel inside and out. McVay also comes equipped with three assistants (Joe Barry, Wade Phillips and Aubrey Pleasant) who know the Redskins’ defense well. Barry (now linebackers coach and assistant head coach in L.A.) was the defensive coordinator in Washington last year, when Pleasant worked with the defensive backs. Phillips has studied Washington because he was preparing to interview for the defensive coordinator job before joining L.A. in the offseason. McVay and offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur are running a new scheme, and Phillips has a better defense, so it seems like the Rams have the edge.

3 Third-down defense Washington allowed a first down on an NFL-worst 46.6 percent of third downs last year. Last week, the Eagles kept the Redskins’ defense on the field by converting 57 percent of third downs.

This is another reunion as these former Clemson teammates face off. Watkins and Breeland battled daily in practice and said they brought out the best in one another. Watkins got the best of Breeland in their single NFL meeting, racking up 111 yards and two touchdowns on five catches for the Bills in 2015, when Washington beat Buffalo 35-25. Last week in his Rams debut, Watkins had five catches for 58 yards on five targets. Look for quarterback Jared Goff to go to him early and often Sunday. Breeland is coming off of an encouraging game to start the season. He recorded a pair of touchdown-saving pass breakups, nearly picked one of them off, and also added a couple of tackles in run support against the Eagles. This is a contract year for the fourth-year corner. Neutralizing his good friend would represent another step in the right direction for that next deal.

Scherff doesn’t get a break. He opened the season with a matchup with Fletcher Cox, and now he draws the task of fending off a player recognized as the most dominant defensive lineman in the NFL. Several Redskins players joked that they wished Donald, who missed the opener, had waited one more week to end his contract holdout. In his first three seasons, he has recorded nine, 11 and eight sacks. The Redskins know the Rams will use Donald a little differently this year because now he plays end in a 3-4 front rather than tackle in a 4-3. But he’ll still be the same force. Cox moved around along the line last week and recorded a sack and a forced fumble. Scherff and the Redskins can’t afford to let Donald have a monster day. They need to do a better job of protecting Cousins, who was sacked four times last week, and getting the running game going.

Committing to the run A slow start put the Redskins down 13-0 in the opener, and coach Jay Gruden quickly abandoned the run. The club ran for only 64 yards. Rob Kelley got 10 carries. Samaje Perine didn’t touch the ball.

ANALYSIS Two years ago, an NFL executive surveyed the college landscape and offered an associate in the industry some friendly advice. “You better hit on an offensive lineman now,” the executive told his pal, because he could see the supply of capable blockers dwindling. The words, presented anonymously in order for the executive to speak candidly, seem prophetic after the dismal product the NFL rendered in Week 1. The league has for years fretted over a scarcity of capable quarterbacks, but an equally alarming problem surfaced as offenses reached new levels of putridity. The NFL has an offensive line crisis, and the talent drain at the position is damaging the quality on the field in even uglier fashion than poor quarterbacking. “I believe that the lineman shortage is a bigger problem,” said the executive. “I don’t know if I can compare the two. They’re both not real good.” Only two offensive linemen — tackles Garett Boles (Broncos) and Ryan Ramczyk (Saints) — were first-round picks in April. Denver took Boles with the 20th pick, the latest in modern NFL

history the draft had gone without an offensive lineman being taken. The dearth of serviceable blockers stems from two factors: Linemen enter the NFL less prepared than ever, and they have less opportunity to improve once they’re in the league. Most college linemen play in spread systems reliant on screens, quick passes and misdirection. Linemen enter the NFL with little experience hitting beyond their initial block or countering a pass rusher’s secondary moves. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, teams have fewer offseason practices and hit at full speed less frequently. The decrease of full-contact sessions hurts offensive lines more than

any other unit, especially in comparison with defensive linemen. As a result, horrific offensive line play led to a hideous Week 1. Six teams failed to crack double-digit points. The Jets got 12 but didn’t score a touchdown. In game after game, the line gave its offense no chance. According to Pro Football Focus, only 10 of 32 teams got a positive grade for pass blocking, and 11 were above zero in run blocking. The NFL is fundamentally changing, for the worse. It could use more and better quarterbacks. It more desperately needs better linemen to protect them, to give them a chance and to make the sport more palatable on TV. QB QUESTIONS CONTINUE

With Luck out, Colts delay naming starter Andrew Luck, left, is out for the second week in a row as he continues to recover from offseason shoulder surgery. Edsall back with baggage With UConn, ex-coach of Terps goes to Virginia for first time in 5 years COLLEGE FOOTBALL Connecticut football Coach Randy Edsall was addressing members of the media this week about his team’s road game Saturday against Virginia when a reporter asked what he remembered from the last time he visited Charlottesville. It was Oct. 13, 2012, and Edsall was in his second season at Maryland. A lucrative contract had lured the coach to College Park on the heels of his first stint at Connecticut, when he led the Huskies to five bowl games. “I can remember some snap went by some guy, the quarterback, at one time, but I don’t want to remember it,” he said of the 27-20 win against the Cavaliers. Maryland nearly wasted a 17-0 lead that day. The victory would be Edsall’s last that season before a six-game slide, and his record following that game was 16-22, leading to his dismissal in the 2015 season. Edsall spent last year working for the Detroit Lions as director of football research and special projects until reuniting with Connecticut in December, soon after the firing of Bob Diaco. In his first go-round at UConn, Edsall posted 74 wins and two Big East titles. He guided the Huskies to a Fiesta Bowl appearance in 2011, his final game

The abrupt exit rankled many in the Huskies’ athletic community and compelled Edsall to begin his second introductory news conference at Connecticut by issuing an apology. “Almost six years ago, I made one of the worst decisions in terms of how I left the University of Connecticut,” he said. “That is something that I have to live with and have lived with.” The first game of Edsall’s reboot was nearly a disaster. BOXING Trainer Abel Sanchez noticed something different about his fighter during months of camp. Gennady Golovkin, known casually as GGG or “Triple G,” worked as hard as ever, was in tiptop shape and still launched his balled-up fists like a pair of flying anvils. But there was something new there, too: “He has a sparkle in his eye,” Sanchez said. Win or lose, Saturday’s bout against Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas stands to define Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) more than anything that has preceded it. Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) is the kind of opponent the knockout specialist from Kazakhstan has sought for years. Golovkin, 35, holds three of the four world titles. At nearly 90 percent, his knockout percentage is the highest the middleweight division has ever seen. Each of Golovkin’s 37 victories was impressive — and the full collection even more so — but he finally has the opportunity to answer the oft-asked question: Yeah, but how would he fare against a quality opponent? If Golovkin can get past Alvarez, a 27-year-old from Mexico, he will have defended his middleweight title 19 times, putting him within jabbing distance of a record many thought would stand for years. Bernard Hopkins defended his middleweight belt 20 consecutive times, a virtual eternity in the rugged division. RICK MAESE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FOR MAKING FRIENDS WITH NEIGHBORS ometimes breaking the ice in a new neighborhood or building can be challenging, but having at least one friend or acquaintance in your building can bring you peace of mind and make your living experience that much better. Creating a sense of community among your neighbors will make you happier and will make any potential conflict resolution down the line smoother, too. Taking that first step and saying hi can be daunting, but here are some easy ins:

neighbors. This small and respectful gesture can go a long way.

Smile and Greet People

Pay Attention to Community Events

S

Seems like common knowledge, but most times when I’m coming and going from my apartment, I am either in a rush or it’s early in the morning. During those times I’m much less likely to be friendly, but opening up to others with something as simple as a smile could eventually lead to a conversation or at least a positive perception from your

Good Old-Fashioned Cookies

rent pays for it, so at least check events out to get the most bang for your buck in your apartment complex.

Offer to Dog-Sit

Are you new to your building, but not sure how to introduce yourself? Everyone likes baked goods. Bake some brownies or cookies, or even pick them up from the store, and take the leap – knock on the door and introduce yourself to your next-door neighbor. It can’t hurt.

Many apartment communities hold small events from time to time to foster friendship and community among residents. You may be wondering if anyone really goes to these; the truth is, some people really do. It can’t hurt to go, and if they are serving any food or beverages, chances are your

This only works if you like animals, but one simple way to interact with your neighbors is to be friendly with their pets. Asking to pet someone’s dog is somehow easier for me than straight-up saying ‘hi’ to the owner, and often times an owner will like that you asked before petting and that you showed interest in their furry friends. Keep in mind that not all pets are friendly, so don’t take it personally if you get a ‘no’ here and there. Take it a step further and let them know that you are willing to pet-sit if they ever need help (but only if you really mean it).

Use Apartment Amenities If you live in an apartment with a lounge or with a gym, use these amenities. You do

pay for them. If you go at similar times each day, chances are you might start running into the same people, and if you use the smile and greet method, you might just ease into acquaintanceship or friendship with other gym/lounge/pool/coffeemaker users. In my case, my building offered a shuttle service – I made most of my friends on the daily commute just by being open to conversation. Although many of these might sound like common sense, they are easier said than done. Be brave though; ultimately, being nice never hurt anybody. If your neighbors don’t immediately reciprocate, don’t take it too personally; just continue to be a considerate neighbor. Sometimes these things take time, and being considerate never hurt anyone either. ■ By Victoria Naranjo for Apartment Showcase

‘School Life’

Things get so bizarre in “Mother!” that even Jennifer Lawrence gives a good performance.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Right at home: J. Law finally gets a mother of a role I believe Jennifer Lawrence is a good actor. Having said that, I did not care for her performances in “American Hustle,” the X-Men movies or “Joy,” or her Oscar-winning turn in “Silver Linings Playbook.” I thought she was fine in the “Hunger Games” series and excellent in her first big role, 2010’s “Winter’s Bone.” Having said THAT, I don’t believe it’s her fault that I didn’t enjoy any of those performances. Lawrence has often been criminally miscast. Mostly by David O. Russell, who directed her in “Joy,” “Hustle” and “Playbook.” Knock it off, please, Mr. Russell.

Casting is a tricky business, especially in Hollywood. It’s a balancing act of talent, box office draw and type. Lawrence has always had the talent; she certainly has the draw, given the fact that she’s no stranger to the list of top-paid actresses. It’s the type that’s given her trouble. She’s funny, but not the comedic type (Melissa McCarthy). She’s pretty, but not the glamorous type (Margot Robbie). She’s talented, but not the “real actor” type (Rooney Mara). Since “The Hunger Games,” Hollywood hasn’t really known what to do with Lawrence (especially you, DAVID O. RUSSELL). So she’s been pushed into boxes where she doesn’t quite belong, and consequently she often looks

uncomfortable onscreen, like her shoes are too tight. Until “Mother!” In the latest bonkersfest from “Black Swan” director Darren Aronofsky, Lawrence plays a woman who lives in the possibly evil house many of the people on “House Hunters” deserve. Her husband (Javier Bardem), a writer’s-blocked poet, provides most of the company. Then some mysterious strangers (Ed Harris and a magnetic, hilarious Michelle Pfeiffer) show up and everything just starts getting weird. And weirder. And then again weirder. Aronofsky’s technique is the opposite of Russell’s. Every bit of flash is gone;

‘Mother!’ (R, 121 min.) DIRECTOR: Darren Aronofsky STARS: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer IN A NUTSHELL: A couple are put to the test when uninvited guests show up at their home and disrupt their tranquil existence as if they were in a Darren Aronofsky film.

Jim Carrey to star in “Kidding,” an upcoming comedy series from Showtime

in fact, Lawrence’s face is deliberately made up to look so bare it’s practically waxen. She doesn’t talk much; her character’s emotions flicker mainly through her eyes. In fact, “Mother!” places her at the center of the story while simultaneously all but visually erasing her. She blends in, which ironically gives the audience a chance not just to see her, but to watch her. And it turns out that Lawrence is the kind of actor who is really interesting to watch. She can — and does — make painting a wall compelling. Lawrence took a huge pay cut to work with Aronofsky (the film’s $30 million budget is just $10 million more than her salary for last year’s “Passengers”), and it was a smart move for both of them. Aronofsky did something few directors ever get to do — take an incredibly well-known actor and show us a new side of her. And Lawrence gets to go beyond type to show the talent underneath. PARAMOUNT PICTURES

PG-13, 99 min.

In the documentary “School Life” — a charming portrait of Headfort, Ireland’s only boarding school for children ages 7 to 13 — the emphasis is on life, not school. Its true subjects are the quirky teachers, John and Amanda Leyden, a husband and wife who love their jobs as much as their students. The story is not exactly profound, except in the way it makes a case that happiness comes first, then learning. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Dolores’ Unrated, 97 min.

In “Dolores,” a documentary that spotlights social justice pioneer Dolores Huerta’s central role in the fight for workers’ rights, filmmaker Peter Bratt underscores her vital contributions, placing them on a par with those of other, better-known champions of the worker. It’s educational, to be sure, but also exhilarating, inspiring and deeply emotional. LORA GRADY (TWP)

‘American Assassin’ is off its target FILM REVIEW It’s possible that Dylan O’Brien may someday grow into the role of Mitch Rapp — the lethal terrorist-hunter hero of the late Vince Flynn’s popular series of pulpy spy novels — but in the cinematic origin story, “American Assassin,” based on one of Flynn’s books, he ain’t there yet. Despite his scruffy beard and some passable action sequences, the actor, who just turned 26, still comes across as a not terribly interesting, snot-nosed kid. Clearly, CBS Films, which has bought the rights to Flynn’s Mitch Rapp books, is hoping the character has legs. But first, “Assassin” has to make some money. If Flynn’s die-hard fans don’t buy O’Brien’s pretty boy as a killing machine, there may not be another opportunity for the actor to grow up. “American Assassin” opens on the beach in Ibiza, as the still-soft-and-sensitive version of Mitch is proposing to his girlfriend (Charlotte Vega). But after she is killed by Islamic terrorists,

Mitch undergoes a kind of physical and political transformation that only occurs in Hollywood, or in the pages of potboilers. The movie fast-forwards 18 months to a new and improved version of our hero — who has somehow managed to train himself in martial arts and weapons handling, as well as Arabic language and culture. Mitch 2.0 is now preparing to single-handedly infiltrate the radical Islamist militant cell in Libya responsible for the slaughter of the opening scene. Meanwhile, Mitch is being monitored — and, ultimately, recruited — by the CIA. The deputy director (Sanaa Lathan) announces that he’s “off the charts” in aptitude for the topsecret Orion program, a specialops commando unit under the oversight of ex-Navy SEAL Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). Keaton, at least, looks the part. The movie leaves most of the tough-guy acting to him. When Stan and Mitch go after a rogue Orion graduate who has obtained a nuclear device (Taylor Kitsch), it is Stan, not Mitch, who gets captured and tortured. It’s very macho and violent, a la “24,” with women playing secondary and/ or disposable characters. Shiva

While Dylan O’Brien’s flowing locks are nice, they don’t exactly scream “killing machine.”

CBS FILMS

As a deadly CIA recruit, Dylan O’Brien couldn’t be less convincing

Salinger biopic ‘Rebel’ could use some risks

‘American Assassin’ (R, 111 min.) DIRECTOR: Michael Cuesta STARS: Dylan O’Brien, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan, Taylor Kitsch IN A NUTSHELL: A vengeful young man is recruited by the CIA to help investigate a series of attacks on the military and civilians.

Negar appears briefly, as a mysterious Turkish spy. Despite — or perhaps because of — this Category 3 testosterone storm, “American Assassin”

feels boring. Containing only formulaic action and few genuine thrills, the movie advances toward its foregone conclusion with all the subtlety of a tool and die machine, stamping out one overly familiar scene after another. In the end, Mitch Rapp comes across as a poor man’s Jason Bourne. But at least that franchise, after five movies, is only now starting to exhibit signs of battle fatigue. “American Assassin” is just getting started, and it already feels worn out. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

REALITY SHOWS

A politically charged ‘Real World’ might come to D.C.

Vice Studios is in the early stages of developing a new reality show “that will have people of all political stripes living in a group house in Washington,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. A casting form obtained by THR called the project an “experimental unscripted series” that is seeking “18-45 year-olds from all walks of life and political extremes.” If the currently untitled show gets picked up, it will air this spring. (EXPRESS) Lady Gaga pulls out of Brazil’s Rock in Rio music festival after hospitalization for “severe pain”

FILM REVIEW It is ironic that films about trailblazing artists are so often filled with cliches. Based on Kenneth Slawenski’s 2010 book “J.D. Salinger: A Life,” the biopic “Rebel in the Rye,” about the famed “The Catcher in the Rye” author, embodies the very phoniness that the writer — and his character, Holden Caulfield — railed against. Eyes will roll as, early in the film, Salinger (Nicholas Hoult) is shown writing to editor Whit Burnett (Kevin Spacey) the words “Holden Caulfield is dead.” It’s an all-too-familiar way of opening a movie: with disillusionment. What follows backtracks to 1939, when a young Salinger — then under the tutelage of Burnett at Columbia University — unsuccessfully attempts to court New York socialite Oona O’Neill (Zoey Deutch). Throughout, Burnett tries to impart lessons that are valuable for any aspiring writer. But “Rebel in the Rye” quickly arrives at an impasse, one that’s almost inevitable in movies that attempt to render the mysteries of the creative process. What flows out of the script is boilerplate literary nonsense. “I shaped them. I challenged them,” Burnett crows about such literary giants as William Saroyan and John Cheever. “I discovered them all.” It’s hard to imagine a film more inaptly named. As a movie, this “Rebel” is, as it turns out, terribly by the book. PAT PADUA (TWP)

The week’s best movie previews

‘Fifty Shades Freed’

‘The Disaster Artist’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Feb. 9

EXPECTED RELEASE: Dec. 1

SUMMARY: Anastasia and Christian are back together, but this time they’re getting married, so they’re well and truly stuck with each other. In the third (AND FINAL, THANK HEAVENS) installment in the money-plus-hot-sex-equals-love story, we learn again the lesson that money plus hot sex equals love. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Dave and James Franco (who also directs) star in this behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the modern cult classic “The Room,” an insane, wonderfully terrible 2003 movie that’s best viewed under the influence of powerful moodaltering substances. It’s probably OK to see “The Disaster Artist” sober. Probably. K.P.K.

@TIMODC, on the news that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, a former Goldman

Sachs banker, requested a military jet for his European honeymoon earlier this summer. Mnuchin reportedly made the request so he could have secure communications on the trip, and the request was later withdrawn. But this is not the first time the couple’s travels have made the news. In August, Mnuchin’s new wife, Louise Linton, drew scorn for an Instagram spat over a photo she posted boasting about traveling on a government plane while wearing designer brands.

“Did Hillary’s editor ever bother to tell her that Cersei is a villain?” @ELLENBLACK55, tweeting about the passage in Hillary Clinton’s

book “What Happened” in which she writes that during her 2016 election campaign, pro-Trump crowds called for her imprisonment in a way that reminded her of how zealots in “Game of Thrones” yelled, “Shame! Shame!” at Cersei Lannister. Some were surprised that Clinton compared herself to Lannister, who is not a sympathetic character.

“PSA: The new iPhone costs $999. The entire Cracker Barrel menu costs $887.71. ... Make smart choices.” @LAURENELIZLANE, tweeting this factoid about the cost of the new iPhone X. Her tweet has been liked more than 285,000 times. @AbbeyHagenbaugh put the cost in terms of Taco Bell: “You can have everything off the Taco Bell menu 3 times & it would still cost less than the new iPhone.” The iPhone 8, however, starts at “only” $699.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
