An Irish man who missed his flight at Dublin Airport was arrested Thursday for running after the plane to flag it down. Witnesses said he broke through an airport door and ran to the Amsterdam-bound plane around 7 a.m. He was tackled by airport workers. Patrick Kehoe, 23, later appeared in court. As he left court, Kehoe shouted abuse at journalists and swung at them with his suitcase before lowering his trousers and mooning bystanders. (AP)
Police in Fort Collins, Colo., posted audio to Facebook on Tuesday of a boy who called 911 for help with his math homework. “Hi, this isn’t an emergency, but I’m 10 years old and I’m working on my math homework right now and I can’t figure out what 71 divided by 3,052 is,” the boy said. Dispatcher Chris Clow helped the extremely relatable child figure out the problem (he had it backward) and find the answer: 42.98. (EXPRESS)
Authorities in suburban Atlanta say a man stole credit cards and IDs from eight cars before he fell asleep in one of them and got arrested. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said 23-year-old Timothy Zacharie was arrested Tuesday after a deputy found him sleeping inside a resident’s parked car. The sheriff’s office had been contacted about someone stealing from cars and the deputy discovered Zacharie while searching the area. (AP)

TRANSPORTATION The dockless bicycles and scooters that have popped up like mushrooms in the District over the past year will be allowed in Arlington County under a nine-month trial, with a handful of limits on the size of the fleets and where the vehicles are allowed. Bird, a California-based dockless electric scooter company, already has 500 scooters in Arlington. Lime, another scooterand bike-sharing operation, plans to operate in the county as well. While Arlington plans to limit each company to 350 devices at first, county officials noted that the District, Arlington and Alexandria are a single market, and that bikes and scooters that originate in other jurisdictions may end up in the county. “Arlington was on the cutting edge of regional bike-share

Arlington is also limiting the speed of scooters to 10 mph and bikes to 15 mph. The District is running a similar pilot program until December, and Alexandria is likely to consider its own regulations in the next few months, Arlington transportation officials said.

Falling in polls, Stewart struggles for a reboot VIRGINIA As a Senate candidate in Virginia, Republican Corey Stewart promised to run “the most vicious, ruthless” campaign, a pledge he has largely kept with a steady stream of caustic social media postings aimed at his opponent, Sen. Tim Kaine, D. But with fewer than 40 days before the Nov. 6 election, with money scarce, his poll numbers low and little support among the GOP establishment, Stewart is struggling to reboot. Aiming to blunt his bombastic image, he is now blaming the abrasive campaign he has run for more than year on bad advice from a top consultant he recently fired. At a debate Wednesday, Stewart presented himself as a pragmatic leader able to bridge differences to get things done in Prince William County, where he chairs the board of supervisors. But Stewart didn’t seem able to resist his caustic ways, implying without evidence during the debate that Kaine has been accused of sexual harassment. “Who is the real Corey Stewart?” Mark Rozelle, a George Mason University professor who was on debate panel, asked Stewart. Stewart responded with another attack on Kaine. No matter the answer, Stewart
Republican Corey Stewart hopes to recast his image as he remains about 20 points behind Sen. Tim Kaine in most polls.

is trying any way he can to gain ground on Kaine, who leads by nearly 20 points in most polls. After out-raising Stewart $19.3 million to $1.3 million, Kaine has an advertising budget and logistics operation that have dwarfed the Republican’s barebones campaign. Stewart said his firing last month of Noel Fritsch — a political consultant who also worked on his unsuccessful 2017 bid for governor — was an effort to steer his campaign away from an angry tone that alienated potential supporters as it curried favor from the extreme right, including white supremacists. Since then, Stewart has woven into his speeches sober topics
such as the gross domestic product and unemployment rates. Although he fired Fritsch, Stewart has not severed ties with Rick Shaftan, another adviser, who in his social media posts has called majority-black cities “sh--tholes” while bemoaning that the South lost the Civil War. “It doesn’t say anything that voters should feel comfortable with,” said Quentin Kidd, director of Christopher Newport University’s Wason Center for Public Policy. “I don’t know how a moderate Corey Stewart would make amends for all of the things that the Corey Stewart that you and I know has said and done.” ANTONIO OLIVO, PAUL SCHWARTZMAN AND GREGORY S. SCHNEIDER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
President Trump housed his 2016 campaign staff on a floor of his Manhattan skyscraper that felt more like a storage warehouse than a corporate office, with plastic tables and folding chairs befitting the shoestring operation. But as the president gears up for re-election, his campaign is relocating closer to the boss. Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign has all but finalized a decision to move its headquarters to Northern Virginia, and officials are scouting for office space in Arlington, according to several people familiar with the move. The campaign has not yet signed a lease, but campaign manager Brad Parscale and other officials are looking at several Arlington options, including in Rosslyn. (TWP)

Canines tapped to control bird population
A Maryland town besieged by birds is calling on goose busters — more commonly known as border collies. The Ocean Pines Association voted this year to euthanize around 300 of the Canada geese to protect water quality. But they returned in large numbers, so the association decided this week to hire Maryland Geese Control. The company says it uses border collies trained to chase geese out of the water and off the land without harming the birds. (AP)

DUI, resisting arrest charges dropped against D.C. advisory neighborhood commissioner
A high school principal in D.C. is under pressure for her treatment of a girl’s sexual assault claim. Roosevelt High School Principal Aqueelha James initially promised a swift and thorough investigation in a June meeting with the freshman and her mother. But then the girl left the room and her mother went out to comfort her, leaving a recording device that captured what school officials said next. That recording is now evidence in a lawsuit against the principal and the D.C. government. School officials and police did investigate but no charges were filed. (AP/TWP) THE DISTRICT
Rape suspect arrested after 16-hour standoff A man wanted on a rape charge in Virginia was arrested Thursday after D.C. police said he barricaded himself for more than 16 hours inside his residence in Northwest’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood. Police said he refused to come to his door and officers waited him out. Authorities said there was no indication that anyone inside was held against their will. Arlington police identified the suspect as Salodus Hicks, 60. He is charged in arrest warrants with forcible rape and strangulation. (TWP) VIRGINIA

Falling for Fall Early autumn is a near perfect season for the Washington region. The air is cooler, neighbors gather at football-watching parties, and the kids are back in school where they belong. Everyone’s stepping lively thanks to relief from summer’s heat and anticipation of the year-end holidays to come. It’s also a great time to make changes to your home’s décor. Cooler weather means a different color palate, cozier fabrics, and lots of indoor light to compensate for shorter daylight hours. It’s also the perfect time to indulge in a new mattress, state-of-the-art window treatments, or a few carefully chosen pieces of furniture. Visit a local retailer and start exploring the possibilities.

Metro board gives Wiedefeld big raise Pay increase comes amid objections from agency’s rank-and-file TRANSPORTATION Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld will receive a $37,500 raise, effective immediately, despite vociferous objections from the agency’s front-line workers — and at least one board member. The Metro board voted Thursday to extend Wiedefeld’s contract to 2021, and pay him $435,000 a year, making him one of the highest-paid public transit chiefs in the country. The 7-1 vote approving the addendum to Wiedefeld’s contract was a sign of the board’s confidence in the general manager, who came to the agency in November 2015 at the height of its chronic safety problems. It is the first raise Wiedefeld has received since joining the agency; he has eschewed raises and bonuses during his tenure, despite being eligible for annual performance bonuses. “Having watched what he’s going through, and having watched the changes he’s made, I believe that we’re headed in the right direction. … Leadership matters,” board member Clarence Crawford said. Board member Michael Goldman was the lone “no” vote.

Metro’s board on Thursday voted to raise General Manager Paul Wiedefeld’s pay by 9.4 percent to $435,000 a year, despite objections from workers.
Goldman said his opposition was not a reflection of his confidence in Wiedefeld’s leadership — “I think that Paul Wiedefeld has done a tremendous job for a very tough assignment,” Goldman said, but that it was simply a matter of optics. Goldman said Wiedefeld has insisted that the path toward making Metro a more sustainable and better-functioning transit system involved “shared sacrifice.” The board also finalized contracts with the agency’s two largest unions, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 and the Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 2. Those contracts provide comparatively smaller pay increases
to transit operations, maintenance staff, and administrative workers. Additionally, Wiedefeld announced managers also will receive raises averaging 2.4 percent annually over a four-year period. The disparity between their increase and Wiedefeld’s was not lost on workers, who showed up to let board members know what they thought. “Paul Wiedefeld, who has not turned a wrench, operated a bus or train, serviced an escalator … or scrubbed a floor, is being praised as the reason for Metro’s improvement, while the workforce that has performed that work has been vilified,” mechanic Zuri Tesheira said. MARKETS The Securities and Exchange Commission sued Tesla chief Elon Musk on Thursday and is seeking to ban him from leading a public company, saying he lied to investors when he claimed he had secured the funding to take the automaker private. Neither Musk nor Tesla responded to requests for comment. The company’s stock plunged more than 11 percent in after-hours trading. Musk is Tesla’s chairman, chief executive and largest shareholder, with a 20 percent stake. Musk stunned global financial markets on Aug. 7 when he issued a series of tweets saying he had the “funding secured” to take his automaker private. But regulators say his statement was deceptive because the deal was in its infancy. “Musk’s false and misleading public statements and omissions caused significant confusion and disruption in the market for Tesla’s stock and resulting harm to investors,” regulators wrote in a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court. Musk had said the deal was all but guaranteed, tweeting that the “only reason why this is not certain is that it’s contingent on a shareholder vote.” His tweets sent Tesla’s stock soaring by nearly 11 percent. But after 17 days, Musk announced that he would not pursue the deal, leading the stock to plunge. DREW HARWELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Christine Blasey Ford said she believed that Brett Kavanaugh was going to rape her in an alleged 1982 attack.
Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh said the confirmation process has been a “national disgrace.”
Painful, riveting, unresolved In a Senate showdown, Ford and Kavanaugh are both ‘100 percent’ certain of their version of events WASHINGTON In an extraordinary and highly emotional day of Senate testimony, California psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford quietly recounted with “100 percent” certainty Thursday that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers. He angrily declared he was “100 percent certain” he did no such thing. They both said the event and the public controversy that has erupted 36 years later had altered their lives forever and for the worse — perhaps the only thing they agreed on during a long day of testimony that was a study in contrasts of tone as well as substance. The hearing was a stunning public airing of a partisan fight — charged with explosive gender politics. Senators were left to decide whether the day tipped their confirmation votes for or against President Trump’s nominee.
Coming forward publicly for the first time, Ford quietly told the nation and the Senate Judiciary Committee her long-held secret of the alleged assault in a locked room at a gathering of friends when she was just 15. The memory — and Kavanaugh’s laughter during the act — was “locked” in her brain, she said: “100 percent.” Hours later, Kavanaugh angrily denied it, alternating a loud, defiant tone with near tears as he addressed the Senate Judiciary Committee. “You have replaced ‘advice and consent’ with ‘search and destroy,” he said, referring to the Constitution’s charge to senators’ duties in confirming high officials. What happens next may hinge on what Trump and his Republican allies think about the display in what could become a defining moment for a party that has struggled to retain female voters. The GOP-controlled committee
was scheduled to vote Friday morning on whether to push ahead with the conservative judge’s nomination. Democrats repeatedly asked Kavanaugh to call for an FBI investigation into the claims. He did not. “I welcome whatever the committee wants to do,” he said. Republicans are reluctant for several reasons, including the likelihood that further investigations could push a vote past the November elections that could switch Senate control back to the Democrats and make consideration of any Trump nominee more difficult. Across almost 9 hours, the senators heard from only the two witnesses. Ford delivered her testimony with steady, deliberate certitude. She admitted gaps in her memory as she choked back tears and said she “believed he was going to rape me.” Ford, 51, said she never

expected to share her story publicly until the allegations leaked in the media two weeks ago and reporters started staking out her home and work in California. When the committee’s top Democrat, Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, asked how she could be sure that Kavanaugh was the attacker, Ford said, “The same way I’m sure I’m talking to you right now.” Later, she told Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., that her certainty was “100 percent.”
Kavanaugh, 53, entered the hearing room fuming and ready to fight, as he angrily denied the charges from Ford and other woman accusing him of misconduct, barked back at senators and dismissed some questions with a flippant “whatever.” He lashed out over the time it took the committee to convene the hearing after Ford’s allegations emerged, singling out the Democrats for “unleashing” forces against him. The judge repeatedly refused to answer senators’ questions about the hard-partying atmosphere described by his peer group at Georgetown Prep and Yale. “Sometimes I had too many beers,” he said. “I liked beer. I still like beer. But I never drank beer to the point of blacking out, and I never sexually assaulted anyone.” Even if senators vote down his confirmation, he said, “you’ll never get me to quit.” LISA MASCARO AND ALAN FRAM (AP)

Mitchell out of her element Sex-crimes prosecutor struggles with format of Kavanaugh hearing
TOM WILLIAMS (POOL IMAGE VIA AP)
WASHINGTON Arizona sex crimes prosecutor Rachel Mitchell was a long way from the familiarity of a Phoenix courtroom when she questioned Christine Blasey Ford on Thursday in a televised hearing that could determine the fate of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. Mitchell typically tries to put people accused of sex crimes in prison, but on Thursday she was in the unusual and difficult position of trying to chip away at the credibility of a woman who claims she was a victim of sexual assault by Kavanaugh when they were teenagers. And she was doing it on behalf of the 11 Republican men on the Senate Judiciary Committee who preferred not to question Ford themselves, and with a strict five-minute time limit that seemed to get in her way repeatedly. As her time for questioning Ford was coming to an end, Mitchell herself seemed to give voice to her exasperation with
Phoenix prosecutor Rachel Mitchell questioned Christine Blasey Ford on Thursday in place of the GOP members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
her task when she rhetorically asked Ford about the best way to question victims of sex crimes. “Would you believe me that no study says that this setting in five-minute increments is the way to do that?” Mitchell asked. But when Kavanaugh sat in the witness chair, most Republicans took matters in their own hands, asking Kavanaugh their own questions.
In her very first exchange with Ford, Mitchell began by expressing sympathy for Ford, saying, “I just wanted to let you know, I’m very sorry.” But then she turned to her task, asking a series of small questions about the accuracy of statements Ford made. In a trial, the answers to those questions can help lawyers paint a picture of a witness as unreliable. But in the Senate hearing
room, Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley cut in to say her time was up and it was now the Democrats’ turn to ask questions. The scene repeated itself throughout the day. An experienced prosecutor, Mitchell does not operate under time constraints when she questions witnesses in a courtroom. The tenor of the questions suggested that Mitchell was trying, if gently, to question the reliability of Ford’s recollections and portray Ford as a pawn of Democrats who are out to stop Kavanaugh. Mitchell pressed Ford repeatedly to reveal who paid for a polygraph exam that Ford took in the late summer. One of her lawyers, Debra Katz, interjected, “Let me put an end to the mystery. Her lawyers paid for the polygraph.” The questions about the polygraph also illustrated that Mitchell had little time and no prior access to Ford, which might have allowed her to avoid asking questions where the answers hardly undermined Ford as a witness. When Mitchell asked why the polygraph was done near a Washington-area airport, Ford replied that it was to accommodate her as she headed to her grandmother’s funeral. MARK SHERMAN (AP)

4 key moments from the Kavanaugh hearings Graham gets furious
Trump ‘riveted’
‘She’s pleasing’
An apology
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., ripped Democrats for engaging in the “most unethical sham” he’s seen in his career. Facing Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who has not announced how he will vote, Graham vowed: “To my Republican colleagues, if you vote ‘no,’ you’re legitimizing the most despicable thing I have seen in my time in politics.”
President Trump called Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony “riveting” in a tweet. Kavanaugh “showed America exactly why I nominated him,” he wrote. Before Kavanaugh’s testimony, a Trump adviser said Ford’s testimony was “certainly credible” and dealt a blow to Kavanaugh’s chances of joining the Supreme Court.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, confronted by reporters during a recess, was asked whether Ford was “credible” in her testimony. He called her “attractive” and a “good witness.” “I don’t think she’s un-credible. I think she’s an attractive, good witness,” he said. Asked what he meant, Hatch said: “She’s pleasing.”
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., pressed Kavanaugh about whether he was being candid about not having drunk to excess in high school and college. He tried to turn the tables, asking Klobuchar whether she had ever blacked out from drinking. Kavanaugh later apologized to Klobuchar, who said her father is an alcoholic. (TWP)
Under questioning by Sen. Kamala Harris, Kavanaugh said he did not watch Ford’s testimony
Country glued to TVs as Ford tells her story UNITED STATES “It looks like she’s crying,” Hilda Darkins said, as several retirees around her dabbed their own eyes. “Who can blame her?” At the Mid-County Senior Center in Lake Worth, Fla., two dozen people sat around circular tables, facing the TV watching Christine Blasey Ford testify. “She looks scared, and she looks nervous. But I think she’s telling the truth,” said Myrtle Facey, 78, a retired cashier. Ford’s testimony transfixed Americans in coffee shops, subway cars and Capitol hallways. For many watching, the political importance was secondary. The power of the moment was in seeing Ford tell a story of private pain before a massive public audience. “16A: Crying. 14B: Crying. 17C: Weeping,” Ron Lieber, a New York Times columnist, wrote on Twitter from a flight, listing the reactions as passengers watched the hearing on seat-back TVs. “I am one of the criers.” Frenetic traders at the New York Stock Exchange were glued to TVs, senators not on the committee bunkered in their offices in the Capitol, and at the National Sexual Assault Hotline, the volume of calls spiked. “On a typically weekday, our queue of folks waiting to talk to one of our hotline staff might be six to eight people,” said Scott Berkowitz, chief executive of the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network. “Today, it’s gotten as high as 49.” (TWP)

Israel: Iran has secret cache UNITED NATIONS Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran on Thursday of keeping a “secret atomic warehouse” just outside its capital, despite the 2015 deal with world powers that was meant to keep it from obtaining nuclear weapons. Holding up a poster-board map of an area near Tehran before world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly, Netanyahu said Iranian officials were keeping tons of nuclear equipment and material in a warehouse near a rug-cleaning operation. Iranian state media called the announcement “ridiculous” and an “illusion.” Netanyahu’s disclosure came four months after Israel announced the existence of what it said was a “half-ton” of Iranian nuclear documents obtained by Israeli intelligence in the Shourabad neighborhood near Tehran. Israel said the cache proved that Iranian leaders covered up their nuclear weapons program before signing the nuclear agreement. Iran hasn’t acknowledged the alleged seizure. “What Iran hides, Israel will find,” he said. The new site Netanyahu identified is near Shourabad. In referring to Netanyahu’s statements as “ridiculous,” the Iranian state TV report said the country is committed to

The website of state TV briefly reported the Netanyahu accusation and called it an “illusion.” The 2015 Iran nuclear deal came after years of Western sanctions over the country’s contested atomic program. Netanyahu said Israel shared the information with the IAEA. The Vienna-based agency did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Early read on Redskins The Redskins have this week off for their bye, and their 2-1 start has provided a snapshot of what the coming 13 games might provide. Mostly, Washington showed that it can beat anyone on its best week, and inexplicably look like the walking dead at other times. When the Redskins return on Oct. 8 at New Orleans, don’t expect coach Jay Gruden to roll out any reworked schemes. The Redskins are who we think they are — a team that will hover around .500 but
WASHINGTON POST, AP AND GETTY IMAGES
has a puncher’s chance of making the playoffs. Here are five things we learned about the team so far.
Doctson’s no star
Peterson’s producing
Kerrigan’s missing
Smith checks down
Gruden’s unchanged
Make all the excuses you want for the 2016 first-round pick — injuries, pressure to play too big of a role — but the Redskins are getting little production from him. After one catch in the opener against Arizona, Doctson made three of his four catches late against Indianapolis. He then had zero receptions against Green Bay, but he did draw two pass interference calls on one scoring drive. Five catches over three games is not enough in a receiving corps that lacks a clear No. 1. The Redskins will likely let Doctson play out the rest of his contract through 2019, but he’s not the playmaker they need.
Gambling on a 33-year-old running back on the eve of the season has paid off big time in two of three games. Adrian Peterson has rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns. More importantly, he’s averaging 4.2 yards per carry. He looks fresh, is hitting holes quickly and has been the perfect counter to third-down back Chris Thompson. Peterson ran for 120 yards against the Packers, providing hope he can gain steam over the season, but a sprained ankle he suffered late in the game is worth watching. Right now, the veteran back is the key to the offense, not new quarterback Alex Smith.
Forget about Ryan Kerrigan going without a sack over three games for a second. It’s more concerning he has only two tackles. Stats don’t always show true value because Kerrigan gets held often without drawing flags, but he’s not even getting close to quarterbacks. The renewed strength of the interior defensive line should be taking attention away from Kerrigan, but he isn’t bringing much pressure from the outside. The Redskins have played two QBs with quick releases in Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, so that’s also a factor.
Alex Smith’s reputation as a master of the checkdown has proven correct. While he tested Green Bay’s mediocre secondary a few times beyond the first-down marker, Smith is mostly looking for some positive yards with second and third choices rather than gambling for big plays. It doesn’t help that the Redskins don’t have a game-breaking receiver. It’s much easier to spot Chris Thompson, Jordan Reed or Jamison Crowder 5 yards away. Still, the offense is grinding more than booming. Smith plays a smart game and takes some chances by running the ball himself, but it gets boring sometimes.
Coach Jay Gruden hasn’t shown many new wrinkles in his fifth season in D.C. The team already fell into one of its occasional, uninspired efforts — in this case the loss at home to Indianapolis — and on cue rebounded with a sharp win over Green Bay. The question is not how Gruden often regains momentum, but why his team’s energy disappears some weeks. Gruden is running the ball more this season because he has someone who can gain 4 yards per carry, but the passing game has looked particularly bland. Gruden has paid more attention to special teams, too. But overall, he’s been the same old Jay.

Carolina announced Thursday that it signed free agent Eric Reid, the safety who joined Colin Kaepernick in kneeling during the national anthem when both played for the 49ers. Reid, 26, played five years in San Francisco and started 69 games, making the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2013. No team signed him as a free agent in the offseason after his contract expired, leading him to join Kaepernick in filing a grievance against the NFL, alleging NFL owners colluded to keep him out of the league. The Panthers were in need of help at the position after placing Da’norris Searcy (concussion) on injured reserve. Carolina has a bye and returns Oct. 7 against the Giants. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL When No. 22 Duke hosts Virginia Tech on Saturday night, neither team will have its regular starting quarterback. That means the game might come down to which backup — Quentin Harris of Duke or Ryan Willis of the Hokies — has a better night. Harris has more experience this season, having already made two starts in place of the injured Daniel Jones. Willis, who made 10 starts over two seasons at Kansas before transferring to Virginia Tech, has more playing time in his career but only took over for the Hokies last week, when Josh Jackson broke his fibula. “I think practice reps can only get you so much and teach you so much,” Harris said. “When there’s high stakes, you definitely kind of elevate your level of play. So getting those in-game reps, I believe, is invaluable.” The Blue Devils (4-0) haven’t really changed what they do since Jones broke his clavicle in the second half of a win at Northwestern in Week 2, because both of their quarterbacks have the ability to run and throw. But Harris has been more comfortable as a runner. He was a short-yardage specialist during his first two seasons before throwing three TD passes in each of his starts this year, at Baylor and against North

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech (2-1, 1-0 ACC) will rely on Willis, who has thrown for 2,725 yards and completed 54.5 percent of his passes during his career, but 16 of the 18 games he’s played came at Kansas — where he played in only one victory in two years. “I’m in my fourth year of college football. You learn a few things along the way,” Willis said. “I feel a lot more confident going into games now. I feel like I’m under control. I know what’s going on. I know what looks they’re giving me.” Willis will try to replace the production of Jackson, who set

COLLEGE FOOTBALL Anthony McFarland’s football career has been defined by waiting — first because of talent ahead of him at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Md., and then because of an injury — but this year the running back has emerged as a key contributor at Maryland. Through Maryland’s first four games, the redshirt freshman leads the team in yards from scrimmage. In a win over Minnesota last week, McFarland scored his first collegiate touchdown on the opening drive and later had a 64-yard run for another score. He’s had 100 yards rushing in back-toback weeks. Heading into Maryland’s bye week, McFarland has 291 rushing yards — 10.8 per carry. The speedy back is now part of a deep position group at Maryland after he turned down offers from Alabama, Georgia and Miami “Why can’t I do what I want to do with my teammates where I’m from?” said McFarland, who plays with nine other DeMatha alums. During McFarland’s last high school season — when he was supposed to be the go-to back after taking turns behind other future Division I players, including Maryland teammate Lorenzo Harrison III — a broken fibula kept him on the sideline. After arriving in College Park, McFarland had to wait another year to play so he could “get my body right.” EMILY GIAMBALVO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The vile bunch: I can’t watch them, so don’t make me There are times when I’m just done. This is one of those times. It was reported this week that Mel Gibson is co-writing and directing a reboot of “The Wild Bunch.” Leaving aside whether we need this movie (we don’t) or whether Gibson is a good director (he’s not), this is going to kick up the whole “can we separate the art from the artist?” conversation. And for me, that conversation is over. My answer is no. The list of men — always men — we’re supposed to separate from their art seems to never
stop. And asking viewers — especially women — to separate the man from his movies is to negate a host of women’s experiences. It’s telling us, again, that what we see and what we feel somehow doesn’t count, that what we feel isn’t true. I have never liked Woody Allen’s films, because his depiction of women is often creepy and gross. When I’ve brought that up in the past, I was told that I simply didn’t “get” them, that they were an expression of male experience. I got them just fine, thank you, because I have the sense every woman has when something or someone is creepy and gross.
It’s the superpower we all have thanks to existing in the world. I steer clear of Roman Polanski films because I simply can’t watch them without thinking that the man who made them has been convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl. “But she has forgiven him!” people — usually men — say. And yes, his victim has. Her forgiveness does not change the fact that he RAPED a CHILD. I won’t see “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” later this year because I cannot watch Johnny Depp without thinking of the bruises on his ex-wife Amber Heard’s face. And I will not see Gibson’s “Wild Bunch” because I cannot sit through a movie and forget that he told the mother of one of his children it will be her fault if she gets “raped by a pack of n------.” Women have been told to brush it off, to keep it quiet, that it’s all in our heads, that it didn’t happen that way or it didn’t happen at all — and the “it” can be anything from a
catcall (it’s a compliment!) to rape (we all know what thousands of gaslighting excuses belong in these parentheses). Telling women that it’s our fault that we can’t or won’t separate the character of a man from his work places the burden on us, and we didn’t do anything to deserve it. I don’t entirely know where my line falls. Do I never watch a Hitchcock film again because of his notorious mistreatment of actresses? One thing I am sure of is I am not going to watch movies made by men who hurt women. No, it doesn’t matter if they’ve been convicted of a crime or not; I’m not a judge, so I don’t demand a burden of proof. All I demand is the experience of watching a movie knowing that no one who’s associated with it is a despicable human who has been told, again and again, that how he does at the box office is more important than who he is as a person. Dern steps into Reynolds’ shoes
Bruce Dern will replace Burt Reynolds in Quentin Tarantino’s film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Deadline reported Thursday. Reynolds had been cast in the drama, centered around the Charles Manson murders in the summer of 1969, but did not film his role before his death Sept. 6 at age 82. Dern joins a cast that also includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Kurt Russell and Al Pacino. The movie comes out July 26. (EXPRESS)

‘School’ is crude and heartfelt PG-13, 111 min.
There’s a genuine desire for self-improvement at the heart of “Night School.” Yet, much as he did with “Girls Trip,” director Malcolm D. Lee tempers sensitive character development with gross-out humor. The film stars Kevin Hart as a salesman back in school to get his GED, with Rob Riggle, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Romany Malco as his classmates and Tiffany Haddish as their nononsense teacher. Hart, who co-wrote the script, is perfectly convincing as a hustler and liar who knows deep inside that by making excuses he’s only cheating himself. At nearly two hours, “Night School” drags when the second act turns into a heist movie. But the movie gives some depth to its misfits, and ultimately sends the valuable message that nobody should be ashamed of who they are. PAT PADUA (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Sisters Brothers’ reaches for the sky FILM REVIEW “The Sisters Brothers,” a Western set in Oregon and California during the febrile heights of the Gold Rush, opens with an arresting scene: a shootout filmed almost entirely in darkness, with the sparks from popping guns its only illumination.
From the get-go, then, it’s obvious that “The Sisters Brothers” will subvert typical Western spectacle even as it indulges it. This schematically familiar but gently funny adaptation of Patrick deWitt’s novel doesn’t necessarily break new ground. But it aerates what’s already been well-trod, offering an alternately pitiless and tenderhearted lens on such hardy themes as character, filial loyalty and American progress at its most naive and

the case, tracking Warm, so that all the assassins need to do when they meet up with their quarry is ready, aim, fire. Directed by the fine French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, “The Sisters Brothers” is spiked with sequences of bloody violence and suffering. But propelled by Alexandre Desplat’s beautiful music, the film ambles along with pleasing ease until its unexpectedly touching conclusion. Like the opening scenes, the finale of “The Sisters Brothers” is another subversion, this time by way of a dreamlike quietude and, of all things, gentleness. The sweet relief is breathtaking in its simplicity and emotional force. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The week’s best movie previews
‘Dark Phoenix’
‘Creed II’
EXPECTED RELEASE: Feb. 14
EXPECTED RELEASE: Nov. 21
SUMMARY: The perfect Valentine’s Day date movie! We rejoin Professor X (James McAvoy) and the gang but there seems to be a problem. Phoenix (Sophie Turner), the most powerful of the mutants, seems to be in a pretty bad mood. Considering she has the power to literally end the world, that’s not great for anyone. She should try smiling more. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: It looks like Michael B. Jordan put on about 30 pounds of solid muscle for this sequel and it was WORTH. IT. Anyway, Adonis Creed will face Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), the son of Ivan Drago — who killed Creed’s father in “Rocky IV.” Creed’s thirst for vengeance should really pack a punch (ba-zing!). Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
