A Welsh rugby player had an unusual reason for missing a big game in South Africa: A lion bit his hand. Scott Baldwin was taken to a hospital for stitches and other treatment Thursday after ignoring instructions about not touching a lion during a trip to a game park. Said Ospreys coach Steve Tandy: “I don’t know what sort of wildlife show Scott has been watching where you can pat a lion on the head as if it’s a kitten.” (AP)
Archaeologists in Boston are excavating what they think was the site of an outhouse next to Paul Revere’s home. The privy could be flush with artifacts, since people typically dumped household items in their outhouses. So far, volunteers have pulled pieces of pottery and a tobacco pipe from the North End yard. Archaeologist Joe Bagley theorized that Revere used the outhouse, since “he had 12 kids in his own little house.” (AP)

Millennials are leaving D.C. REGION Ryan Ferguson rode into Washington with other millennials who arrived en masse after the Great Recession. The city’s burgeoning tech scene was a draw for him, and young workers infused the city with a vibrancy that touched and transformed neighborhoods like Columbia Heights, Petworth and the H Street NE corridor. It seemed to be the start of a new era for the city and its inner suburbs. But it was easier to lure millennials than to keep them. Many are now packing up for job prospects — buoyed by a stronger economy — and a higher quality of life in lowerpriced cities across the nation. Some, like Ferguson, are simply moving home. When it came time to get married and buy a house, there was no question that he would leave Washington. Today Ferguson, 28, lives with his wife, Aly, in a suburb of Boston, and he works in that city’s tech scene. A new analysis by George

For first time in years, more are departing the region than arriving
The H Street corridor is one of the areas that was transformed when millennials flocked to the District after the Great Recession.
Mason University researchers finds that, among those already in the United States, more people are leaving the region than arriving for the first time since the Great Recession. Millennial deserters — ages 20 to 29 — are one factor. But another big one is baby boomers leaving to begin retirement life elsewhere. Families and the unemployed
are also going. For decades, the number of people coming into the nation’s capital has remained remarkably stable. The region’s government agencies kept hiring through the recession and the government contracts remained a bedrock for the business community. But historically, people tend to

pack up and leave when jobs are plentiful in other cities. The current exodus could complicate efforts to diversify the region’s mix of business and wean it off its dependence on the federal government. In recent years, Washington has persuaded large corporations like Nestle and Yelp to set up offices here, and local leaders are now mobilizing to lure Amazon’s second headquarters here. “This report clearly reinforces the need to change our trajectory,” said Jason Miller, chief executive of the Greater Washington Partnership. “When you look under the hood at the performance of the region, our growth has been below average compared to other metropolitan areas.” Even so, the metro area’s population is still growing, thanks to births and the arrival of foreign immigrants. “Our region has been gaining new residents steadily but has not been able to hold on to them,” said Jeannette Chapman, deputy director of the Stephen S. Fuller Institute at George Mason. “The region has a harder time keeping residents when the national economy picks up.” AARON GREGG

Should Metro have power to ban riders? TRANSPORTATION Prompted by a recent spate of assaults on bus drivers — including an incident in which a woman allegedly threw a cup of urine onto a driver and another in which a driver was spat on — Metro officials and lawmakers are pushing for tougher criminal penalties and the authority to ban offenders — particularly repeat offenders — from the system. Under the regional agreement that governs Metro fares and policies, transit police have the authority to keep people out of the system “on an immediate, short-term basis,” agency spokesman Richard L. Jordan said. But neither Metro nor the police department has a formal process to completely bar people from the system. They must seek
a stay-away order from a judge. Metro officials have complained that prosecutors usually opt to request limited, short-term bans that prevent a person from riding a particular bus line or entering a single station. “When we have a case where we can’t ban someone from the system who has a tremendous track record of doing this on our system, what message does that send?” Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld said. Wiedefeld said he is researching policies that exist at other transit authorities. Two of the agencies on his radar are the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority and San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit. Both are able to issue temporary bans for certain offenses. MARTA officials have the capacity to issue permanent bans as well. Another issue at hand is that a systemwide ban for a Metro

rider would be difficult to enforce because the system spans numerous jurisdictions, said Casey M. Lingan, chief deputy commonwealth attorney for Fairfax County. A judge could order a defendant to stay away from Metro stations and buses in a Virginia county but wouldn’t necessarily have that authority in the District or Maryland. “It’s a tricky situation because you’ve got multiple jurisdictions ... depending on where a crime took place,” Lingan said. Wiedefeld acknowledged that a long-term solution may also require working with the U.S. attorney’s office in the District. Bill Miller, spokesman for the office, said their decision to

restrict the stay-away order in the case of Opal Brown, the woman who allegedly threw urine on a bus driver, for example, was “based on the facts of this particular case.” Wiedefeld said he wants to see such crimes taken more seriously and made felonies — in the same way that public servants such as police officers and postal workers are protected. New York and Pennsylvania have added public transit employees to a “protected class” of public servants. “I think that our operators — they’re not being addressed the same way we deal with other professional people that . . . have lives at stake,” Wiedefeld said.

local Sophomore reportedly fell from dorm window after using hallucinogen FAIRFAX A student at George Mason University died Saturday after he reportedly took a hallucinogenic drug and then fell from a fifthfloor dormitory window. Campus police said Sunday they were concerned that other students might have the same drug. The student, whose name was not released, was a 19-year-old sophomore, according to GMU spokesman Michael Sandler. Sandler declined to say what type of hallucinogen the student
is believed to have taken, pending a toxicology exam by the medical examiner. Campus police chief Carl Rowan Jr. said in an email to students and staff Saturday night that the incident occurred in the Potomac Heights residence hall around 4:40 p.m. Saturday, and that the student was taken to Inova Fairfax hospital, where he died. Rowan said in the email that no foul play was suspected, but that other students may have the same hallucinogenic drug and may be at risk. The chief encouraged anyone who possesses or has taken the drug to call campus police, noting that George
Mason has a medical amnesty program and will not prosecute anyone who reports illegal drug activity in the interest of safety. Sandler said police were summoned to the Potomac Heights dorm on Saturday and found the student alive but unresponsive. Govind Virdy, a sophomore from Lansdowne, Va., said the man who fell was a close friend from Stafford, Va. He said the man was a 19-year-old sophomore. “He was a really great guy,” Virdy said. “He had a tough life. We were all trying to help him out. We all loved him, we all care about him. Hopefully he’s where he wanted to be.” TOM JACKMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

22 people die, 32 hurt in stampede on pedestrian bridge A stampede broke out Friday morning on a crowded pedestrian bridge connecting two railway stations in Mumbai, killing at least 22 people and injuring 32 others, Indian officials said. Once the panic began, some commuters leaped over a railing; others were crushed or fell underfoot and were trampled. The cause was uncertain, although a Mumbai police official said some falling concrete had hit part of the bridge railing, leading people to surge forward out of fear the bridge was collapsing. (AP)

President Trump’s health secretary resigned Friday, after his costly travel on chartered planes triggered investigations that overshadowed the administration’s agenda and angered his boss. Trump to Tillerson: Don’t waste time with N. Korea
COURTS The Supreme Court begins its new term today with a fortified conservative majority and a docket filled with some of the moment’s most contentious issues: voting rights, religious liberty, protection from discrimination, and privacy in an increasingly monitored society. The court was shorthanded for more than a year after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016 and responded by largely avoiding controversial topics. Now, with Justice Neil M. Gorsuch not only filling Scalia’s seat but also matching his conservative ideological role, the court is back to its full nine members and has a docket that will test harmony. A trio of cases that will probably be heard before the end of the year forms the nucleus. At issue: Whether the court for the first time will find that a state’s electoral districts were gerrymandered with such a partisan skew that they violate the Constitution. Whether prosecutors must seek a judge’s permission before securing cellphone tower records that contain months of details about a person’s whereabouts. Whether a wedding vendor whose religious beliefs do not condone same-sex marriage must comply with a state law that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation. ROBERT BARNES (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The president has taken an increasingly hard-line stance toward Pyongyang over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile tests, threatening in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly two weeks ago to “totally destroy” North Korea if necessary. Tillerson, on a visit to Beijing, told reporters Saturday that the State Department is “probing” through direct channels with the North whether Kim would be open to talks. “We ask, ‘Would you like to talk?’ We have lines of communications to Pyongyang. We’re not
in a dark situation, a blackout. We have a couple, three, channels open to Pyongyang; we can talk to them; we do talk to them,” Tillerson said. He did not elaborate about those channels or the substance of any discussions. After he left China, his spokeswoman said that North Korean officials “have shown no indication that they are interested in or are ready for talks regarding denuclearization,” according to The Associated Press. Trump has said that he is open to military options. DAVID NAKAMURA

There’s something familiar about this charcoal sketch of a woman’s face and nude torso — could it be an unclothed precursor to the Mona Lisa by the master himself? French government art experts are trying to find out, analyzing the sketch in a laboratory beneath the Louvre, the museum where the Mona Lisa hangs, to see if Leonardo da Vinci drew it before painting his 16th-century masterpiece. ‘Lone wolf’ suspected in attack on police officer
A man with a knife killed two women at the main train station in Marseille, France, on Sunday, shouting “Allahu akbar” — Arabic for “God is great” — during an attack that authorities were investigating for links to Islamic extremism. The Islamic State said Sunday the man was its “soldier.” Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said police have video that shows a man attacking a woman and running away, then coming back and attacking a second woman. The video shows the same man running toward soldiers who were rushing to Marseille Saint Charles train station. The soldiers fatally shot him. Both of the women died of their injuries. (AP)
Former football legend O.J. Simpson became a free man Sunday after serving nine years for a botched hotel room heist that brought prison time he avoided after his 1995 acquittal in the killings of his ex-wife and her friend. Simpson, 70, was paroled from Lovelock Correctional Center in northern Nevada, state prisons spokeswoman Brooke Keast said. She said she didn’t know immediately where Simpson was headed, adding that an unidentified driver met him and took him to an undisclosed location. Simpson has said he wanted to move to Florida, but Florida prison officials said they received no transfer paperwork. (AP)

Should they rebuild?
Caribbean residents consider leaving after hurricanes wiped away their homes Peter and Jenita Cuffy walk behind a Red Cross crew as they look at the damage on the island of Barbuda.
Trump calls Puerto Rican critics ‘ingrates’
SALWAN GEORGES (THE WASHINGTON POST)
CARIBBEAN In the cruelest season of storms that anyone alive has known, entire islands, such as Barbuda, have been wiped clear. There’s no power across most of Puerto Rico, and it likely won’t fully return for months. Dominica is devastated, with no commerce and hardly any usable homes. St. John and St. Martin have been hurled back to a time before luxury resorts and time-share condos. The storms pushed the islands back to the primitive, basic state that made the sandbars of the Caribbean so alluring to European empires, pirates and tourists for half a millennium. Investors, governments, visitors and the people who have called these islands home for generations now wonder: Has something elemental changed? Might paradise turn uninhabitable? Is it time to go? Devastation is part of the natural cycle of life in the islands. During the past four decades, the region has been hit by more than 200 major storms, which killed more than 12,000 people and caused nearly $20 billion in damage, according to an International Monetary Fund study. About 1 percent of the Caribbean’s gross domestic product is wiped out every year. “Storms shape the history of these places,” said geographer Joshua Jelly-Schapiro. “And people have been leaving these islands for decades,” heading for New York, London, Paris and other more stable places in countries that once colonized the Caribbean. But in recent years, hurricane season has delivered more intense storms. “A person in the Caribbean generally would experience one Category 5 hurricane in a generation,” said Tahseen Sayed, the
World Bank’s Caribbean country director. “In two weeks, we’ve had two Category 5 hurricanes.” The result is not only physical damage and economic strain. “There’s a new, strong consensus that storms are getting worse and climate change is to blame,” Jelly-Schapiro said. “You didn’t hear that even a few years ago. For the first time, people are saying, ‘I love this place, but maybe it’s not a place where we can live.’ ” Maria Roman and her husband, George Matta, live on what feels like a new island within their island of Puerto Rico. Hurricane Maria cut their neighborhood off from the rest of their mountain town, collapsing the bridge over a 200-foot-wide river. They were left marooned, without food stores, gas stations or emergency services. The only way out was to wade across the river or drive more than three hours around the mountains — nearly impossible
A chance to rebuild Gaston Browne, prime minister of the former British colony of Antigua and Barbuda, views the storm as an opportunity. From the ruins of his country’s smaller island, he wants to build a Barbuda powered only by solar energy. Telephone lines could go underground. Houses and the hospital could be rebuilt to withstand monster storms. But some Barbudans are skeptical, fearing a land grab that could lead to large-scale development. (TWP)
with little to no gas. “I call it lost in space,” said Roman, who added her family will move to the mainland as soon as her younger daughter graduates from nursing school in May. the region make up 20 percent of the population in greater Miami and 7 percent of New York City. Half of Caribbean immigrants around the world send remittances to support relatives back home, and 70 percent belong to organizations on their islands, according to a World Bank study. Storms drive people out. “Hurricanes have been an important aspect of migration in the Caribbean at least since the late 19th century,” Yale historian Stuart Schwartz said. People leave because they are dispirited or because the storm destroys their livelihood, wiping out sugar plantations or gutting resort hotels. “Puerto Rico was already in an out-migration crisis before the storms,” Schwartz said. The island lost 10 percent of its population in the past two years, mainly because of deep financial woes. “This could make it much worse.” ANTHONY FAIOLA, SAMANTHA SCHMIDT AND MARC FISHER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
PUERTO RICO President Trump on Sunday scoffed at “politically motivated ingrates” who had questioned his administration’s commitment to rebuilding Puerto Rico after a pulverizing hurricane and said the federal government had done “a great job with the almost impossible situation.” The tweets, from a president ensconced in his New Jersey golf club, sought to defend Washington’s attentiveness to recovery efforts on a U.S. territory in dire straits almost two weeks after Hurricane Maria struck. San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz on Friday accused the Trump administration of “killing us with the inefficiency” after the storm. She begged the president, who is set to visit Puerto Rico on Tuesday, to “make sure somebody is in charge that is up to the task of saving lives,” and appealed for help “to save us from dying.” Cruz said Sunday, “There’s only one goal, and it’s saving lives,” adding that all she did “was ask for help.” On Saturday, Trump lashed out at Cruz, deriding “poor leadership ability” by her and others in Puerto Rico “who are not able to get their workers to help.” Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., called Trump’s tweets “unspeakable” and characterized the president as “speaking from his fancy golf club … attacking the mayor of San Juan, who is struggling” to bring electricity, food, water and gas to the island. “I don’t know what world Trump is living in,” he said. BARCELONA, SPAIN Catalonia’s defiant bid to hold a referendum on independence from Spain degenerated into scenes of mayhem on Sunday, with more than 800 people injured as riot police attacked peaceful protesters and unarmed civilians gathered to cast their ballots in a vote the government had banned as unconstitutional. Thirty-three officers were also injured. Hundreds of police armed with truncheons and rubber bullets were sent in from other regions to confiscate ballots and stop the voting, and amateur video showed some officers dragging people out of polling stations by the hair, throwing some down stairs, kicking them and pushing them to the ground. “What the police are doing is simply savage,” said Jordi Turull, spokesman for the Catalan regional government. “It’s an international scandal.” There also were some signs of provocation by activists. In footage released by the Spanish Interior Ministry, some protesters were seen throwing objects and metal barriers at riot police.

Police were acting on a judge’s orders to stop the referendum, which the Spanish government had declared illegal — and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said going forward with the vote only served to sow divisions. In a televised address after the majority of polls closed Sunday, Rajoy thanked the Spanish police, saying they had acted with “firmness and serenity.” Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis said the violence was “proportionate.” “If people insist in disregarding the law and doing something that has been consistently declared illegal and unconstitutional, law enforcement officers need to uphold the law,” he said. Speaking in Barcelona after polls closed, Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont said Catalonia had “won the right to become an independent state.” “Today, the Spanish state wrote another shameful page in its history with Catalonia,” he said, adding that he would appeal to the European Union to look into alleged human rights violations. By day’s end, Catalonia’s health services said 844 people had been treated in hospitals for injuries, including two in serious condition and one being treated after being hit in the eye by a rubber bullet.

No one knows what will happen if Catalan officials use the vote as a basis for declaring the northeastern region independent, a provocative move that would threaten Spain with the possible loss of one of its most prosperous regions, including regional capital and popular coastal city Barcelona. It was also unclear how many of the region’s 5.3 million eligible voters were able to cast ballots, how their votes would be counted and how many votes had been confiscated by police. Catalan regional government spokesman Turull told reporters
early Monday that 90 percent of the 2.26 million Catalans who voted Sunday chose the ‘Yes’ side in favor of independence. He said nearly 8 percent of voters rejected independence and the rest of the ballots were blank or void. He said 15,000 votes were still being counted. Catalans who favor a break with Spain have long wanted more than the limited autonomy they now have, claiming they contribute more than they receive from the central government, which controls taxes and infrastructure. Sea turtle carries oceanographer’s ashes
A rescued green sea turtle named Picasso was released back into the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday, carrying the ashes of Texas oceanographer Tony Amos, who founded the rehabilitation center that helped nurse it back to health. Amos’ family sprinkled ashes on the turtle’s back; then, hundreds who attended the sunset ceremony in Port Aransas, Texas, watched Picasso slowly crawl into the waves. (AP)

Legal marijuana lights up hiring by California BUSINESS Scientists. Tax collectors. Clerical staff. Analysts. Lawyers. Truck drivers. And more scientists. Recreational marijuana use becomes legal in California in 2018, and one of the things to blossom is government jobs. The state is trying to fill what eventually will be hundreds of new positions by 2019 intended to bring order to the legal pot economy. Thousands of additional jobs are expected to be added by local governments. The booming bureaucracy represents just one aspect of the challenge faced by California: Come January, the state will unite its long-standing medical cannabis industry with the new recreational one, creating what will be the United States’ largest legal pot economy. The Bureau of Cannabis Control, the state’s chief regulatory agency overseeing the pot market, expects by February to have more than 100 staffers, about 10 times more than it had this past January. There also will be jobs added to issue licenses for sellers, growers, truck drivers, manufacturers and others working in the projected $7 billion industry. Pay varies with position but can be attractive, with some scientist posts earning more than $100,000 annually. Special investigators with the Consumer Affairs Department could earn in the $80,000 range. MICHAEL R. BLOOD (AP)

THREE POINTERS
JOHN MCDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Monday microscope
Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula has led an early turnaround during his first year with Washington.
DAN STEINBERG | THE WASHINGTON POST
Throwback coach: Pros love playing for Jim Tomsula Over the last two seasons, Washington allowed opposing teams to rush for an average of 4.7 yards per carry, the worst total in the league. This season, that number is 3.2, seventh-best in the NFL through the first three games. Want to ask a player for a potential explanation? “Tomsula,” said tight end Vernon Davis, who played in San Francisco when Jim Tomsula coached the defensive line. “He’s making an impact. That’s what he does.” It seems too simple to
attribute all this to the Redskins’ new D-line coach. Jonathan Allen, a high-first-round talent, slipped to the Redskins at No. 17 in the draft. The club signed Zach Brown, who entered Sunday second in the NFL in tackles. Depth has improved, Washington has largely played with the lead and it’s been just three games. Still, nine months after hiring Tomsula, 49, the Redskins’ line is almost unrecognizable. And it’s hard not to wonder how much of it is due to the man San Francisco Pro Bowler Justin Smith used to call “the best D-line coach in the NFL.”
Tomsula coached the 49ers’ line from 2007 to 2014; in that span, the team allowed the second-fewest rushing yards per carry in the league. Tomsula’s time in San Francisco, of course, ended after one 5-11 season he spent as the head coach. This was part of the turmoil after Jim Harbaugh’s departure, and it made Tomsula famous as the personification of blue-collar toughness, a man who worked his way up through every level of small-time football. It also made him into something of a folk hero among football fans drawn to vibrant, throwback personalities. Look at the way NBC cameras caught Tomsula enthusiastically cursing after a big stop last week, a moment every player in the Redskins’ locker room seems to have seen. “That’s just how he is every day, man. There’s no off button with him,” linebacker Mason Foster said. “That’s what he preaches: Be violent, make
$100K
it personal. And I think guys have. It’s important to us because it’s important to him.” It may be too early to get excited about a position group that has bedeviled the Redskins for years. But those three games have been striking, opening up new defensive possibilities in Washington. Also striking: how consistently players describe Tomsula. “I love him. I love playing for him,” said Allen, the former Alabama star. “I’ve only seen probably one guy who’s had a dedication to football as much as he does, and that’s Coach [Nick] Saban.” Davis said, “I can tell you that he’s a wonderful person. In order to be a great leader, you have to get your guys to love you, and you have to be able to influence them in ways to make them do their job ... really well. And he does that.”
The Redskins play in prime time for the second straight week tonight in Kansas City (8:30, ESPN). Here are a few things to watch as Washington attempts to hand the Chiefs their first loss of the year. (TWP)
3 Ugly history The Redskins are 1-8 all-time against the Chiefs and since 1983 have lost six straight in the series. Most recently, Kansas City beat Washington 45-10 at FedEx Field in 2013.
2 Pressure is on defense Trending up after shutting down Oakland, the Redskins have to stop an offense that started Sunday ranked third in yards per game (397.3) and scoring (31 points per game).
1 On the mend RB Rob Kelley (ribs), LB Mason Foster (shoulder) and TE Jordan Reed (chest) are questionable but hope to return tonight after sitting out last week’s win.

NORMAN’S PLEDGE TO PUERTO RICO
The amount Redskins cornerback Josh Norman promised to donate to hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. Norman tweeted Saturday that he was spurred to act because “you all are citizens of U.S. Just like us.” He then told The Washington Post that he felt the Trump administration has been slow to respond, and he wanted to help. Graham Gano hit a 48-yard field goal as time expired, and the Panthers stunned the Patriots in Foxborough, Mass. Cam Newton threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score. Jonathan Stewart ran for 68 yards to pass DeAngelo Williams as Carolina’s all-time leading rusher. Carolina (3-1) finished with 444 total yards, marking the fourth straight game the Patriots (2-2) allowed at least 300 yards. Tom Brady (307 yards, two TDs) hit Danny Amendola on fourth-and-goal from the 1 to tie the score with about three minutes left, but two penalties on the Patriots’ defense helped set up Gano’s game-winner. Todd Gurley scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 53-yard catchand-run, and Greg Zuerlein kicked a career-high seven field goals to lead the Rams to a road win. Gurley finished with 215 total yards — 121 rushing and 94 receiving — as the Rams (3-1) overcame two first-half touchdowns by Ezekiel Elliott. Los Angeles rallied from 11 points down late in the first half and matched its start from a year ago, when the Rams went 1-11 the rest of the way. Dallas (2-2) is already a loss shy of its total from last season. With two more TD passes, Rams quarterback Jared Goff raised his season total to seven with just one interception. (AP)

Le’Veon Bell rushed for 144 yards and two scores, and the Steelers beat the Ravens in a duel for first place in the AFC North. PIttsburgh (3-1) was held to a touchdown over the final 30 minutes but mounted enough of an attack before halftime to earn its first win in Baltimore since 2012. Ben Roethlisberger went 18-for-30 for 216 yards and a touchdown. The Ravens (2-2) trailed 19-0 at halftime, generated only 154 yards through three quarters and stumbled through a second straight game with only one touchdown, a 16-yard pass from Joe Flacco to Mike Wallace. Flacco (235 yards passing) was sacked four times and intercepted twice. (AP)

Rookie Deshaun Watson threw for four touchdowns and ran for another as the Texans scored the most points in franchise history. Watson, the 12th pick in the draft, tied an NFL record for most TDs by a rookie quarterback. Against the Titans in Houston, the Texans (2-2) outdid their previous scoring mark of 45 points, which came in a win over the Titans in 2014. Houston’s defense notched four interceptions, two off Marcus Mariota and two off backup Matt Casell. Mariota, who left the game with a hamstring injury, became the first quarterback since Steve McNair to run for two TDs in a game for the Titans (2-2). (AP)

Stephen Hauschka kicked a go-ahead, 56-yard field goal with less than five minutes left and the visiting Bills made a last-minute defensive stand to beat the Falcons after they lost wide receiver Julio Jones to a hip injury. Buffalo (3-1) is atop the AFC East standings at the latest point in a season in nine years. The Bills led the division at 5-1 in Week 7 of 2008. Buffalo stopped the Falcons (3-1) at the Bills’ 10 with less than a minute remaining when Matt Ryan couldn’t complete a fourth-down pass to Taylor Gabriel. Ryan threw a TD with two picks, and Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White returned a fumble 52 yards for a touchdown. (AP)

Chandler Catanzaro kicked a 41-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in overtime to lift the Jets to a wacky home win. After Catanzaro’s make, he and his teammates celebrated at midfield — but then had to pause because there was a penalty flag on the field. Officials ruled there actually was no penalty on the play. Bilal Powell rushed for a career-high 163 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown, and rookie Elijah McGuire had a 69-yard scoring run as the Jets (2-2) ran all over the Jaguars (2-2). New York blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter thanks in part to an 81-yard fumble return by Jaguars linebacker Myles Jack. (AP)

President Trump presents trophy to U.S. captain Steve Stricker.
Trump gives trophy to U.S. after Cup win GOLF The Americans beat the Internationals in the Presidents Cup for the seventh straight time, and this one was no contest. With most of the work already done, a dominant U.S. team needed only one point from the 12 singles matches Sunday in Jersey City, N.J. The victory was assured when Daniel Berger went 3 up with three to play against Si Woo Kim in the fourth match. Berger wound up winning his match, and the celebration was on. The final score was 19-11. President Trump, honorary chairman of the matches, became the first sitting president to attend on the final day and present the trophy. He said he was dedicating the Presidents Cup trophy to the people of Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida who are recovering from hurricanes. He said of Puerto Rico: “We have it under really great control.” The U.S. fell short of its goal to become the first Presidents Cup team to win all five sessions. The Internationals won six matches and halved two others. One win belonged to Jhonattan Vegas, who waved his Venezuelan flag after beating Jordan Spieth. The last point came from Phil Mickelson, a 47-year-old on an American team that featured six players in their 20s. Mickelson has played in every Presidents Cup since it began in 1994. This was his 23rd straight time in the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. (AP)

MLB Max Scherzer bounded up the stairs from the Nationals’ dugout to the field on his way to his usual post-start catch Sunday. The white compression sleeve on his right leg was the only indication that he was dealing with what he said was a “tweaked” hamstring. Scherzer, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, left his last regular-season start after only
31/3 innings Saturday night after feeling something in his hamstring while throwing a changeup. The club sent Scherzer for an MRI as a precaution. “Showed exactly what we thought: nothing major,” Scherzer said Sunday, describing the MRI result as “more of a tool to help know how we need to treat it.” Scherzer (16-6) said he could run on the leg and was “ pretty upbeat and positive,” but he wouldn’t speculate on whether he would pitch Friday in Game 1 or Saturday in Game 2 of the NL Division Series against the reigning World

The Nationals have not said whether Scherzer or Stephen Strasburg will start Game 1. “We’re still trying to get all the doctors to take a look at this and make sure that we have the absolutely correct diagnosis,” Scherzer said. “But we have a really, really good idea.” Scherzer, who led the NL with 268 strikeouts, spent time on the disabled list in August with a neck problem and left a start in early September after a batted ball struck his left calf. MUST-SEE THIS WEEK
1 ‘The Mayor’ 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on ABC
This actually is not the most incredibly awkward scene in “Big Mouth.”
Adolescence isn’t easy Netflix’s ‘Big Mouth’ finds a smart way to wrestle with the monster called puberty
TV REVIEW Netflix’s provocative yet adorable animated series “Big Mouth,” out now, is only about the zillionth cartoon for grown-ups that attempts to plumb the awkward indignities of puberty. And yet, it somehow still provides. Comic actor Nick Kroll and his buddy John Mulaney, who found recent success on Broadway with their “Oh, Hello” routine, provide voices for “Big Mouth’s” main characters, Nick and Andrew, two seventh-grade boys who are best friends despite the fact that their growth spurts are occurring on separate schedules. Andrew has sprouted pubic hair and is haunted by a randy Hormone Monster that only he can see, whose suggestive powers
produce constant erections. “What is wrong with me?” Andrew wonders, on a trip to the boys room during class. “Nothing,” the Hormone Monster replies. “You’re a perfectly normal, gross little dirtbag.” Meanwhile, at a school dance, Nick has his first kiss with Jessi (Jessi Klein), which, while unsatisfying, ushers the two into a hotly scrutinized middle-school dating scene, the latest gossip of which is duly covered in the morning announcements by a catty gay boy, Matthew (Andrew Rannells). Thus Jessi and Nick must now reluctantly ride together in the back of the bus and hold hands all day on a class field trip to the Statue of Liberty, which makes Andrew jealous.
Up close and personal Nick Kroll, who created “Big Mouth” with his real-life best friend Andrew Goldberg, told Vanity Fair the series is “the most autobiographical thing” he’s ever done. He added that the show’s portrayal of puberty “seems so truthful and real” and “hopefully gives kids the opportunity to be like, ‘Yeah, that’s what it feels like,’ or have adults look back and be like, ‘That’s what I was going through.’ “ (EXPRESS)
It’s on the field trip that Jessi, wearing white shorts, has her first menstrual period and is visited by a Hormone Monstress (Maya Rudolph), who, in a later episode, encourages Jessi to get to know herself with
a hand-mirror. What a flash of genius to ask Kristen Wiig to provide the friendly, talkative voice of Jessi’s vagina. (“Hey, girl!”) “Big Mouth” can’t resist crossing several lines of decency — otherwise I’d happily recommend it as sympathetic viewing for the age group it portrays (and I still might, for older teenagers whose sense of humor has matured). There’s a frankness and honesty beneath the show’s raunchiness that sometimes echo the best work of Judy Blume and other great chroniclers of adolescent angst, especially where the fraught and seldom-discussed feelings of boys are involved. It’s charming and repulsive all at once.

Aside from that, the first episode was a brilliant reinvention of the “Star Trek” legend. Two awesome women run the ship: Captain Philippa Georgiou (the formidable Michelle Yeoh) and her Number 1, half human/ half Vulcan Michael Burnham (super-chill Sonequa MartinGreen). The crewmen exist merely to do their bidding. The series looks gorgeous. When Georgiou and Burnham trek across the desert as storm clouds loom, the scene looks like an apocalyptic Renaissance painting, if they had CGI back in the 1600s. And the reflection of the galaxy in an eyeball — to crib a line from Burnham, “The only word to effectively describe it is: ‘Wow!’ ”

Critic’s log, stardate 10022017. Watched “Star Trek: Discovery,” a prequel to the 1966 series that got the phasers firing. CBS aired the first episode on network TV, but now fans must sign up for CBS All Access to catch the rest (episodes stream at 8:30 p.m. Sundays). That’s $5.99 a month with commercials, although you can get a week for free. The opening featured the warrior race Klingons speaking Klingon, or, as it sounded to me, “Hoo mah whip choo!” Even with subtitles, I am bored by Klingon dialogue.
But much of the dialogue is pretentious in the worst Star Trek tradition: “This is Federation space. Retreat is not an option.” And as “Star Trek” captain James T. Kirk might put it in his dramatically paced speaking style: The plot pace is sometimes. A. Little. Slow. Martin-Green is clearly the star. Her logical Vulcan brain and emotional human heart battle it out. And she’s fearless, venturing into space to investigate a threat even though if she stays out more than 20 minutes, radiation will cause her DNA to “unravel like noodles.” The big question: Will the new series evolve into a predictable Federation vs. Klingon dust-up or will the USS Discovery discover really cool stuff? Meanwhile, significant changes occur in Episode 2. They definitely make you want to boldly go to CBS All Access and start paying after that first free week.

“It’s October. Time for everyone to fake hate candy corn.” @JLTEAGEGE, starting out the month of October with a take on candy corn, a notoriously polarizing candy. People have strong feelings about candy corn all year long, but the debate heats up around Halloween. “Happy Halloween month if u eat candy corn near me ur getting decked in the mouth,” @Glock__Lesnar tweeted, taking a firm stance in the “anti” category. @nostalgicuItra stood up for the tricolored candy, tweeting: “It’s finally October and I’m here to defend candy corn all month.”
“I have never identified with anything as much as this ‘SNL’ sketch where Ryan Gosling has a meltdown over Avatar’s use of Papyrus.” @DEVANCOGGAN, tweeting about the “Papyrus” sketch on this Saturday’s season opener of “Saturday Night Live.” Ryan Gosling plays a man driven to madness by the title font for the 2009 movie “Avatar,” which closely resembles Papyrus. “He just randomly selected Papyrus, like a thoughtless child just wandering by a garden, yanking leaves along the way,” Gosling’s character tells his therapist in the skit. The take struck a nerve with viewers: “ ‘Papyrus’ was the first sketch I emotionally connected to on a profound level,” @brianmbendis tweeted.
“Cutler, on wildcat play, hands on hips, not moving, is most Cutlerian thing of all time.” @MIKEFREEMANNFL, tweeting Sunday
after Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler did the absolute least on a play call in the Dolphins game against the New Orleans Saints in London. In the wildcat play, Cutler could have run down the field to at least pretend to be open for a pass, but he didn’t move a muscle. “Even during a football game Jay Cutler’s body language suggests, ‘sitting in a doctor’s waiting room,’ “ @RoFlo tweeted.
“She can’t find people for these freelance positions, she’s been forced to do all of this work herself, and is currently completely swamped and overwhelmed.” AN INDEED.COM JOB POSTING, for a photo editor position at Time Out New York. The post was later taken down. “Every job description should be like this,” @whet tweeted.

Lady dating Bieber preps to be ghosted
Kim shares archaic news Kim Kardashian West finally confirmed in a promo for her reality show that she and Kanye West are expecting a third child. Kardashian West is shown in a short video released Thursday for “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” in which she speaks with her sister Khloe on a video chat. At one point during the call, she tells her sister, “We’re having a baby!” The Wests already have two children together, daughter North and son Saint. (AP)
Insiders close to Justin Bieber issued a clarification to E! News about the singer’s dating life. Though relationship rumors sparked when Bieber was photographed last week with model and actress Paola Paulin, sources said they’re keeping it casual. “Justin has been seeing Paola but is not exclusively dating her,” one insider told E! “He enjoys her company and hanging out with her, but he has not called her his girlfriend. He is still focusing on his health right now.” Another echoed that sentiment: “Justin is not dating anyone exclusively. He wants a girlfriend eventually, though, but he’s taking his time figuring it out before he makes a commitment.” (EXPRESS)

A source revealed to People magazine that Tiffany Trump, the only daughter of President Trump and his second wife, Marla Maples, does not get any sort of stipend from her father. “Donald paid for her college and gave her an apartment, but she did not get any allowance,” the source said. ”She did ask her sister to talk to him about changing that, though.” The insider added that Tiffany “never lived the life of a rich person.” (EXPRESS)
