Do pooches, patios mix? THE DISTRICT The pleasures of AndyPants Sherwood, like those of other dogs, are intense but few. The D.C. Department of Health put a stop to one of them two weeks ago. AndyPants, the unofficial mascot of The Midlands, enjoys lounging in his doghouse on the patio at the trendy Park View watering hole. At least he did until Sept. 19, when a city health inspector showed up to tell his owner, Midlands proprietor Peyton Sherwood, that regulators were enforcing a forgotten section of the health code that prohibits dogs from restaurant and bar patios. Since then, Sherwood has reluctantly been following the rules and serving an exclusively human clientele. “We became a really dog-centric place, and it was really great,” he said wistfully. “It’s just not as cute anymore.” The health department’s visit to The Midlands, which came on the heels of a similar admonition to the dog-friendly Wonderland Ballroom in Columbia Heights,

Council members with complaints, leading to emergency legislation to repeal the ban that will be introduced today. badly misordered priorities in a city struggling with public health problems that include widespread opioid addiction and a deeply troubled public hospital. In a letter introducing a “Dining With Dogs Emergency Declaration,” he referred to those earlier skirmishes, complaining that the health department’s “limited time and resources are being marshaled to wage Round 2 of the War on Pets” and asserting that the agency “seems unable to properly prioritize life or death health care challenges over matters of far less concern.” His legislation would leave the decision of whether to allow dogs on patios to individual proprietors. Health department spokeswoman Jasmine Gossett declined to address specific questions about what led to the renewed focus on dogs outdoors at restaurants and bars. At The Midlands, Sherwood said he’ll be watching the upcoming legislative debate closely. So will AndyPants. “He’s not getting nearly the scratches and love that he got from all of the customers,” Sherwood said. PETER JAMISON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Vegas attack roils Va. governor race VIRGINIA The Las Vegas mass shooting, the deadliest in modern U.S. history, pushed gun control to the front of the neck-and-neck race for Virginia governor on Monday. At a previously scheduled forum in Vienna that was held hours after a gunman killed at least 59 people and injured hundreds, Democrat Ralph Northam and Republican Ed Gillespie offered condolences. But the partisan divide over guns in Virginia, a Southern state with a strong gun tradition that was shaken by the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, was immediately evident. Northam, a former Army doctor who has an F rating from the National Rifle Association,

decried what he called “a proliferation of guns” in society and urged gun control measures. Gillespie, who has an A rating and an endorsement from the NRA, asked for a moment of silence, later telling reporters it was too soon to discuss policy. Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who became one of the nation’s most prominent

gun control advocates after she survived a 2011 shooting in her Arizona district, cancelled plans to campaign for Northam on Monday in Virginia. Meanwhile, the NRA, which had planned to run political advertising in Virginia starting Tuesday through Election Day on Nov. 7, delayed those commercials for one week, according to

a media-buying firm and a Richmond television station. A source familiar with the NRA ad buy said the delay is not connected to the shootings in Las Vegas. The source insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record. This is the second time an episode of gun violence had ripple effects on the Virginia governor’s race, the nation’s marquee statewide election this year. The day after the June 13 primary, a gunman opened fire at a congressional softball practice in Alexandria, injuring House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., and Capitol Police officers. Democrats cancelled a planned unity rally, while Republicans scrapped a victory tour in favor of a prayer in Fairfax. Northam said Monday that the latest tragedy required more than “thoughts and prayers.” FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

LAS VEGAS The rapid-fire popping sounded like firecrackers at first, and many in the crowd of 22,000 country music fans didn’t understand what was happening when the band stopped playing and singer Jason Aldean bolted off the stage. “That’s gunshots,” a man could be heard saying emphatically on a cellphone video in the nearly half-minute of silence and confusion that followed. A woman pleaded with others: “Get down! Get down! Stay down!” Then the bang-bang-bang sounds resumed. And pure terror set in. “People start screaming and yelling and we start running,” said Andrew Akiyoshi, who provided the cellphone video to The Associated Press. “You could feel the panic. You could feel like the bullets were flying above us. Everybody’s ducking down, running low to the ground.” While some concertgoers hit the ground, others pushed for the crowded exits, shoving through narrow gates and climbing over fences as 40- to 50-round bursts of what was believed to be automatic weapon fire rained down on them from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino hotel. By Monday afternoon, 59 people were dead and 527 wounded in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. “You just didn’t know what to do,” Akiyoshi said. “Your heart is racing and you’re thinking, ‘I’m going to die.’ ” The gunman, identified as Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old retiree from Mesquite, Nev., killed himself before officers stormed Room 135 in the goldcolored glass skyscraper. He had been staying there since Thursday and apparently used a

of ammunition. Asked about the motive, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said: “I can’t get into the mind of a psychopath at this point.” Police described Paddock as a “lone wolf” attacker. The FBI said it found nothing so far to suggest the attack was connected to international terrorism, despite a claim by the

Islamic State that Paddock was its “soldier.” Hospitals were jammed with victims, and authorities put out a call for blood donations and set up a hotline to report missing people and speed the identification of the dead and wounded. They also opened a “family reunification center” to help people find loved ones.

More than 12 hours after the massacre, bodies covered in white sheets were still being removed from the festival grounds. The shooting began at 10:08 p.m. at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, and the gunman appeared to fire unhindered for more than 10 minutes, according to radio traffic. Police frantically tried to determine whether the gunfire was coming from Mandalay Bay or the neighboring Luxor hotel. At 10:14 p.m., an officer said on his radio that he was pinned down against a wall on Las Vegas Boulevard with 40 to 50 people. “We can’t worry about the victims,” an officer said at 10:15 p.m. “We need to stop the shooter before we have more victims. Anybody have eyes on him ... stop the shooter.” Country singer Tyler Reeve said he was backstage when shots rang out. He and other singers took cover in a trailer while bullets struck tour buses, equipment cases and the stage. After about 45 minutes, Reeve and his friends left the trailer and ran through the streets to the MGM Grand Casino. “It was just shoes and clothing and blood and bodies,” Reeve said. “It was a war zone.” The crowd, funneled tightly into a wide-open space, had little cover and no easy way to escape. Victims fell to the ground while others fled in panic. Some hid behind concession stands. Others crawled under parked cars. Some of the injured were hit by shrapnel. Others were trampled. The dead included at least three off-duty police officers from various departments who were attending the concert, authorities said. Two on-duty officers were wounded, one critically, police said. LAS VEGAS SHOOTING Before he opened fire late Sunday, killing at least 59 people at a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip, gunman Stephen Paddock was living out his retirement as a high-stakes gambler in a quiet town outside Las Vegas. Paddock, 64, would disappear for days at a time, frequenting casinos with his longtime girlfriend, neighbors said. Relatives also said Paddock had frequently visited Las Vegas to gamble and take in concerts. Eric Paddock said his brother often gambled in the tens of thousands of dollars. “My brother is not like you and me. He plays high-stakes video poker,” he said. “He sends me a text that says he won $250,000 at the casino.” Eric Paddock said he showed the FBI three years of text messages from his brother and said he had no information as to whether Stephen Paddock had gambling debts or was financially troubled. “I have absolutely no information he lost a bunch of money. The casino would know that,” he said. Eric Paddock said his brother had worked as an accountant but

also had real estate investments, including houses and apartments around Orlando, Fla. He said Stephen Paddock had no children and was a multimillionaire, according to The Associated Press. Eric Paddock said he did not

know of any mental illness, alcohol or drug problems in his brother’s life. Their father was once on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list. He was a fugitive bank robber and rarely around for either son. “I was born on the run,” Eric Paddock said. He knew his brother owned a couple of handguns but was shocked at the rapid-fire weapon apparently used by Stephen Paddock in Las Vegas. He said his brother didn’t hunt, barely shot his guns and once took Eric Paddock’s children on a skeet-shooting trip paid for by the casinos. Eric Paddock spoke in his

driveway as he was getting in his car to go with FBI agents to interview his mother, who is in her 90s and appears to have been the last family member to communicate with Stephen Paddock, about two weeks ago. Eric Paddock said his brother last texted him five days after Hurricane Irma hit Orlando to check if anyone in the family had been affected. He said that like him, their mother was bewildered as to why Stephen Paddock had shot and killed so many on Sunday. “We know nothing. If you told me an asteroid fell it would mean the same to me. There’s absolutely no sense, no reason he did this,” he said. “He’s just a guy who played video poker and took cruises and ate burritos at Taco Bell. There’s no political affiliation that we know of. There’s no religious affiliation that we know of.” For several years, the gunman lived with his girlfriend, Marilou Danley, in a retirement community in Reno, Nev., neighbors said. They said they interacted with Danley but not with Paddock, whom they described as extremely standoffish. Danley told residents there that Paddock was a professional gambler, explaining their long absences from the neighborhood. WILLIAM WAN, SANDHYA SOMASHEKHAR, AARON C. President Trump to visit Vegas after deadly attack

White House says it’s too early for policy discussion

Without providing any evidence, the Islamic State on Monday said the gunman in the mass shooting in Las Vegas was “a soldier” from its ranks who had converted to Islam months ago. Authorities have yet to identify a motive for the shooting, and initially said there is no evidence of a connection to international terrorism. ISIS has a history of exaggerated or false claims. (AP)

President Trump plans to travel to Las Vegas on Wednesday following the massacre at a country music festival in Las Vegas. “It was an act of pure evil,” Trump said Monday morning. In his statement, Trump urged the country not to be divided by what happened, and praised law enforcement officers and others who quickly responded as soon as shots were fired. (TWP)

President Trump’s spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said Monday that it is too soon to talk about policy changes in the wake of the Las Vegas shooting, saying, “There is a time and place for political debate but now is a time to unite as a country.” Sanders also cautioned against creating laws that “won’t … stop these types of things from happening.” (TWP)

Does massacre cross line into terrorism? NATIONAL SECURITY The mass shooting in Las Vegas is the deadliest in modern U.S. history, but is it terrorism? Much will hinge on the motives of a white gunman attacking a mostly white audience, but that question also hits some divisive issues: race, religion and politics. The FBI said that the shooter, identified as U.S. citizen Stephen Paddock, 64, had no connection to an international terrorist group. The Islamic State earlier claimed Paddock was a recent convert but offered no proof. The lack of a known motive clouds whether the shooting meets traditional definitions of terrorism. These generally include having a political, economic, religious or social goal; and using violence to convey a message to a broader audience. Prior to Monday’s shootings, Randall Law, who wrote “Terrorism: A History,” said he believed there is a racial component to the United States’ reluctance to clarify or prosecute using domestic terrorism laws. Many Americans, he said, think only “people with foreign names ... and people with dark skin funding foreign ideologies” would commit such horrific acts. He adds that different branches in the U.S. federal government have multiple definitions of terrorism. “It’s a truism that nobody can quite agree on how to define terrorism,” he said. Parents drive from California Jessica Cabrera called her father from Las Vegas and screamed into the phone: “They’re shooting at us. People are falling. I love you!” It was shortly after 10 p.m. The horror his 21-year-old daughter recounted was every parent’s worst nightmare. James Cabrera and his wife, Sonia Pena, jumped in their car and drove to Las Vegas as fast they could from their home in La Habra, Calif. “That was the fastest drive in history from California to Vegas,” he said, seated Monday morning at a slot machine in the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

A woman sits outside the scene of a mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip.

The parents learned their daughter and the friend she went to the festival with had escaped the shooting and hid inside a bathroom at the MGM Hotel until morning. Cabrera’s daughter said people they had befriended at the concert were shot, he said.

‘Thought it was … fireworks’ College student Brandon Clack and his girlfriend were up near the stage when they heard a cracking noise. “We thought it was some kind of fireworks. But then we could tell it was multiple, multiple

rounds,” said Clack, 21, from La Palma, Calif. “It went on for a long time. Like 10 minutes.” The cracking sound stopped. Then it restarted. Chaos swept the crowd as people started running, trying to get out and spreading to hotels along the Las Vegas Strip. “People started running over to the Tropicana, so we decided to run over to the MGM,” said Clack, whose mother and brother were staying there. Clack and his girlfriend, Leslie Reynoso, 20, said they hunkered down with family friends at a room at the MGM for about four

In the darkness, nobody knew what the popping sound was at first. “We couldn’t tell where it was coming from,” said 33-yearold Jason Sorenson of Newport Beach, Calif., who had traveled to Las Vegas with his girlfriend for the event. It became clear what was happening when the musicians left the stage. “It was horrific. We just starting running, and we saw people with blood all over their shirts,” he said. “It wasn’t clear how it bad it was, however, this morning when we walked through the hotel lobby and saw the news on the TVs saying that more than 50 people had died.” Sorenson said they had initially been sitting down on the ground in the middle of the crowd facing the stage, but they had moved up to a safer VIP area they had access to before the shooting began. “If we had stayed in the front we would have been in the direct line of fire,” Sorenson said. Russian ad on Facebook pushed racial tensions TECHNOLOGY One of the Russian-bought advertisements that Facebook shared with congressional investigators on Monday featured photographs of an armed black woman “dry firing” a rifle — pulling the trigger of the weapon without a bullet in the chamber, according to people familiar with the investigation. Investigators believe the advertisement may have been designed to encourage AfricanAmerican militancy and, at the same time, to stoke fears within white communities, the people

The apparent tactic underscores how the Russians used U.S.-based technology platforms to target Americans with highly tailored messages to exploit divisions in American society over the past two years. The ad was among more than 3,000 Facebook ads delivered to congressional investigators that the company says were bought by 470 accounts and pages controlled by a Russian troll farm, the Internet Research Agency,

Students march for Catalonia after day of violence

BARCELONA, SPAIN | Students hold a protest Monday against the violence that marred Sunday’s vote over Catalan independence and left more than 1,300 people injured. Catalonia’s government called for international mediation Monday regarding its separation from Spain. Officials said 90 percent of voters backed independence.

While the U.S. allows digital altering of professional photos of models with no repercussions, in France it’s a different story. A new law there says commercial photos of models made to look thinner or thicker by digital editing must be labeled “photo retouched.” The pressure put on women to maintain unrealistic body shapes is so rampant that images of stars are commonly digitally altered. Failure to comply with France’s law comes with a fine of more than $44,000 or 30 percent of the money spent on advertising. The measure prompted Getty Images, one of the largest online stock image repositories, to say it won’t carry “any creative content depicting models whose body shapes have been retouched to make them look thinner or larger.” (TWP)

Trio’s body clock work earns Nobel Americans win award for biological rhythm research on fruit flies SCIENCE Three Americans — Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth’s revolutions.” Working with fruit flies, the scientists isolated a gene that is responsible for a protein that accumulates in the night but is degraded in the day. Misalignments in this clock might play a

role in medical conditions and disorders, as well as the temporary disorientation of jet lag that travelers experience when crossing many time zones. “I am very pleased for the fruit fly,” said Rosbash, who said he got the call about the award just after 5 a.m. “When the landline rings at that hour, normally it is because someone died. I’m still a little overwhelmed.” But he added, “I stand on the shoulders of giants. This is a very humbling award.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

The Nats went 86-31 in 2016 and 2017 when Max Scherzer, left, or Stephen Strasburg started.

THREE POINTERS

Roster decisions

GETTY IMAGES

The Nationals spent a division-winning season plugging holes created by injuries. Now they must whittle down a long list of contributors to 25 players. Here’s a look at candidates for the playoff roster. (TWP)

THOMAS BOSWELL | THE WASHINGTON POST

Two trump cards: If cramp-free, aces give Nats a leg up Luckily for the Nationals, the Phillies and the Pirates aren’t in the postseason. Last week, they have made the Nationals look like they were preparing for a fathers-vs.-families softball game, not a NL Division Series against the defending World Series champion Cubs. This is readiness? In the past six games, four of them losses, starters Gio Gonzalez and Tanner Roark have been hit hard, Sean Doolittle and Brandon Kintzler have blown saves and Bryce Harper has gone 3 for 19 as part of his return from a 42-game stint on the disabled list. Jayson Werth and Matt Wieters look a bit better but only in the context of their averages — .226 and .225.

The games were meaningless, but the images left behind weren’t without weight. Suddenly, it’s clear that Washington’s October baseball mood is linked to two men far more than any others. We knew it on opening day and are sharply reminded of it now. The Nats are built on Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. This pair of aces, the best such duo in baseball this season, are paid $385 million on long-term deals because, over the past two regular seasons, the Nats are 86-31 when they start. When anybody else starts, they are 106-101. Over 2016 and 2017, Scherzer was 36-13 with a 2.75 ERA and ratios, relative to his 429 innings, that are absurdist: almost twice as many strikeouts (552) as hits (291).

Though dogged by minor pains since spring training, Scherzer has had one of his best years. Now the whole package is finally back together — if the hamstring “tweak” that caused him to leave Saturday’s game after 54 pitches allows. Strasburg is a similar alien: 30-8 with a 3.01 ERA over two years. Even more pertinent, he is the best and scariest pitcher since the All-Star Game with a 0.86 ERA in 10 starts. At a time when the Nats have hit worse for four months in a row, the value of having not one but two aces has never been more vital. The Cubs lead the NL in wins and MLB in runs since the All-Star break. Who’s going to stop them? The Nats are one of a few teams that might have an answer. On Friday, Strasburg, who was named NL Pitcher of the Month on Monday, had no-hit stuff immediately, in command of all five of his devastating pitches, but had to leave in the eighth inning, after allowing just two singles, because of a cramp in his left calf. The next night, Scherzer had what he says might have been his best stuff and command of the season. He allowed only

3 Third catcher Jose Lobaton seems like a bench lock behind Matt Wieters, but the Nats could also use Pedro Severino, who started two NLDS games last year, as a swift pinch runner.

2 Extra reliever The Nats might keep A.J. Cole or Edwin Jackson as multi-inning options. If they don’t want a long man, they could keep Joe Blanton, Enny Romero or both of them.

1 one hit but also had to leave with cramps in his right leg. The Nats better fix those cramps, especially Strasburg’s because he has had them in a few other starts. It should be a relatively small issue: Stay hydrated. Stay away from diuretics, such as caffeine. And load up on electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium. “Eat your bananas,” Scherzer said. “Monkeys never cramp.” For every other playoff team last weekend’s showings mean they better worry about how dominant Scherzer and Strasburg both look.

Backup center fielder There will likely be a bench spot for a natural defensive center fielder. Brian Goodwin, who’s been rehabbing a groin injury in Florida, or young Victor Robles could fill it.

MLB PLAYOFFS Joe Mauer is the only Twins player still swinging from the last time Minnesota made the postseason. After three years of injuryinduced misery, that sweet, lefthanded stroke has been dialed in again, helping the Twins end a six-year playoff drought with a berth in the AL wild card playoff against the Yankees tonight (8, ESPN) in New York. Mauer hit .305 this season, the first time he crested that plateau since 2013, and emerged as a Gold Glove-caliber first baseman. His renaissance has coincided with several others as the Twins became the first team to qualify

for the playoffs after losing 100 games in the previous season. Center fielder Byron Buxton re-emerged as a young star after struggling at the plate in April. Pitcher Kyle Gibson gave the team quality innings in August after being demoted to the minors. Ace Ervin Santana put last

season’s suspension for taking a banned substance behind him and made his second All-Star Game. Seeing Mauer, 34, return to form carries a certain extra boost for the Twins (85-77). The soft-spoken St. Paul native was the No. 1 overall pick, and his first nine full seasons were as

good as any catcher ever had — three batting titles, an MVP and six All-Star appearances. But he hit .267 from 2014-16, when leg and concussion issues turned him into a singles-hitting first baseman. So the Twins made a plan to try to get Mauer healthy with days off and turns at DH. He played in 141 games this year and hit 71 RBIs, his most since 2012. Mauer, who started an eightyear, $184 million contract in 2011, gives the Twins confidence against the Yankees, who are 9-1 against Minnesota in their last three postseason meetings. “He always gets on base,” said Twins second baseman Brian Dozier, who topped 30 homers for a second straight year. “No matter where his stats are, bounce-back year, good years, bad years, he always gets on base.” JON KRAWCZYNSK (AP)

The No. 2 overall draft pick from North Carolina will start against the Vikings next Monday night, the Bears announced Monday. Vikings RB Dalvin Cook out for year with ACL tear Dalvin Cook is the latest integral offensive player lost by the bad-luck Vikings. The team’s fear of a torn ACL in the running back’s left knee was realized Monday, sealing the end of a rookie season in which Cook had rushed for the third-most yards in the NFL (354). Avoid the freshman 15

Curb the first-year weight gain in college by establishing healthy habits early on

NUTRITION With college in full swing, healthconscious freshmen may have an extra worry on their minds: the dreaded freshman 15. Amid the unlimited food at the dining hall and late-night study sessions with plenty of snacks, the freshman 15 seems inevitable. But is it just a myth? Here’s what you need to know, plus tips for eating healthfully at college. Do most freshmen really gain 15 pounds during their first year as undergrads? Research tells us no. Several studies have looked at the freshman 15 phenomenon and found that while weight gain is common during freshman year, 15 pounds is more than the average. The actual weight gain of freshmen varies greatly among different studies, with an overall average of 7½ pounds. So should you worry about gaining those 15 pounds? Probably not. But creating beneficial habits during your college years can set you up for success not only in beating weight gain

while you’re in college, but also in establishing habits you need to stay healthy afterward. Here’s where to start.

Stick to structure Fit breakfast, lunch and dinner into your schedule every day, with a healthy snack between meals if needed. Getting into a routine and creating structure for your meals will help you feel more in control of what you’re eating. This can also help you plan in advance for healthy options.

Cafeteria tips When your dining plan has you going to all-you-can-eat buffets every night, it can be tough to rein in your eating habits. Some tips: Grab a salad plate rather than a dinner plate. Fill half your plate with veggies, a quarter of your plate with lean protein and the last quarter of your plate with whole grains. Skip the dessert bar in favor of tea and fruit you can take to go. C.B.

Get fit with friends Chances are your friends are also trying to avoid weight gain, so create a workout group to hold one another accountable. Print out a schedule of workout classes that your school gym offers and highlight classes that you’ll try together. Having friends to work out with always makes exercise more fun, and it’s not nearly as easy to call off a workout when you know there will be people

waiting on you. If the gym isn’t your thing, take advantage of intramural sports or join a club that will get you active regularly.

Don’t drink your calories Whether you’re downing energy drinks and mochas to wake up for class or having one too many beers on the weekend, those calories add up fast. For a caffeine boost, stick to black coffee or tea,

Mind Your Body Oasis holds blacklight hot yoga Friday at 6:15 p.m.; $25

with just one packet of sugar. Freshmen shouldn’t be drinking alcohol in the first place, but it ends up happening whether it’s legal or not. Remember that alcohol is empty calories, and most cocktails add more empty calories from sugar, too.

Stock up on healthy snacks It’s easier to avoid snacking on junk food if you don’t keep it within arm’s reach. Rather than having bags of chips and candy on hand for late-night studying, stock your dorm room with healthy snacks like individually portioned packs of nuts, wholegrain granola bars with fewer than 5 grams of sugar, and fresh fruit, yogurt, veggies and hummus in your mini fridge. This is also a great strategy for healthier eats after a party. Knowing you have healthy snacks in your dorm room may save you from the temptation to grab takeout or pizza on the way home. Introducing ... pea milk! It’s never been easier to avoid dairy, thanks to an ever-expanding array of plant-based milks. Enter pea milk, the newest nondairy beverage on the block. It’s vegan, nut-free, soyfree, lactose-free and gluten-free. It’s better for the environment than almond milk. And it has more protein and calcium than other alternative milks. The creamy pea milk doesn’t taste like peas. It’s made by harvesting yellow peas and milling them into flour. That flour is processed, separating the pea protein from the fiber and starch. The pea protein is further purified and blended together with water and other ingredients, including sunflower oil and sea salt, as well as vitamins like B12. Ripple currently dominates the market, but Bolthouse Farms’ pea milk will soon be available in stores. It comes in four flavors: original, unsweetened, vanilla and chocolate. MAURA JUDKIS (TWP)

Clearly, this is not how a kitchen renovation (now pricing out at what, four trillion dollars?) should go. By “mistakes in the design” I don’t know if you mean choices that were unwise in retrospect, or actual deficits in their workmanship. If it’s the latter, that calls for a more aggressive remediation. Even in the former case, though, you’ve paid a

substantial amount for a lifechanging project; it’s reasonable that the contractors would want you to be happier. I’m not saying to browbeat them with complaints, but see if there are a few tweaks or a mutually negotiable solution for the worst of the issues. Time will help you get used to it, of course, but taking action to improve things even a little can go a long way.

It’s good that you’re self-aware enough to see the big picture without turning your malaise into blame and constant conflict with your husband. There isn’t an easy answer here; I’m guessing anything from depression to a temporary emotional disconnect to fundamental incompatibility is at hand. How compartmentalized is your unhappiness: Is it really about your husband, or is dissatisfaction with him a symptom of something perhaps even bigger? Did your feelings shift substantially at some point, or has this been a gradual freeze? What were your hopes and goals for married life, and motherhood, and in what ways are they falling short — and what can you do about it? Starting with individual counseling would be wise, giving you insight into what needs to be fixed — and how.

“If Mariah Carey wants a Christmas tree all year round, that’s what she’ll get.” @HASA81, tweeting after Mariah Carey appeared on “Good

Morning Britain” on Monday in front of a Christmas tree. Some viewers criticized the show’s hosts for asking Carey her response to the Las Vegas shooting in such an odd situation (she was being interviewed to promote a holiday tour). Others were simply confused: “Mariah Carey sprawled across her sofa in front of a giant Christmas Tree answering questions about the Las Vegas shootings, am I awake??” @Chris_Eds11 tweeted.

TYPE 2 DIABETES EDUCATION STUDY Have you started using insulin in the past 9 months? If yes, you may be eligible to participate in a study looking at the use of short videos to teach patients about insulin and diabetes. If you agree to participate, we will ask your opinion as to how easy it is to use the education system and whether it helps you to learn about diabetes and taking insulin. The video clips shown in the system are short, most are just 30 second to 2 minutes long. Each gives you information about your diabetes, insulin, and how to take care of yourself if you have type 2 diabetes and need to use insulin. You will receive compensation for participating in this study. If you are interested in participating, please call

“It was not my intent to be used for everything — it’s way overused.” CHRIS COSTELLO, the man who created

the Papyrus font, in an interview with CBS News. The font was thrust into the spotlight over the weekend after it was the subject of a “Saturday Night Live” skit, in which Ryan Gosling’s character is driven insane by the “Avatar” movie’s use of the font in its title. Costello said he “couldn’t stop laughing.”

“So the Szechuan sauce is back at McDonald’s for one day. Got it. Time to send all my family members in shifts to get it all.” @TYBGERRITT, reacting to the news that select McDonald’s outlets will have the brand’s Szechuan sauce available on Saturday. The limited-edition sauce from 1998 has recently been idolized by the TV show “Rick and Morty.” A few area McDonald’s will have the sauce.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Only the tip of the iceberg has been visible to you so far, but today you’re likely to see the whole thing for what it really is. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may be thinking in realistic terms much of the day, but one key interaction will require you to see things symbolically. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You can give a top-notch effort today, even though you are not in a controlling position — nor do you have all the tools. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have to observe certain limits today, at least in what you do — but you can be much more free in the way you think. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Circumstances may not favor your efforts, but that doesn’t give you a reason to stop doing what you’re doing. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You mustn’t let criticism dampen your enthusiasm for a certain endeavor today. Despite what others may say, you’re onto something. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Someone close to you may offer encouragement in a way that takes you somewhat by surprise — but it certainly works the way it should. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You can follow a new trail very far today, trusting that you will get where you are going in a manner that is both speedy and productive.

75 | 55 TODAY: Take Monday and set it to repeat, maybe tacking a couple of degrees onto afternoon highs. Under mostly sunny skies, highs reach the low-to-mid 70s. It’s not quite as chilly as the previous few nights. But clear skies and light winds should still allow our cooler areas to fall into the upper 40s, with mid-to-upper 50s downtown.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’re

Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren were the toast of Paris as the two septuagenarian actresses modeled for L’Oreal. The cosmetics giant transformed the Champs-Elysees into an open-air fashion runway for a one-off event on Sunday — enlisting 18 fashion houses and countless stars to showcase clothes, makeup and hair trends. Fonda, 79, blew out air kisses in a bronze zebra dress, while Mirren, 72, walked in a tailored royal blue coat and a cane. “It’s hard to believe I just did that on the Champs-Elysees,” Fonda said afterward. “I liked it very much. I did not fall over.” (AP)
