Officials in Midway, Ark., are investigating a hole in the ground that spouted 12-foot flames for over 40 minutes. Investigators ruled out methane as the source of the Sept. 17 fire. Farther-fetched ideas, such as a meteorite, also proved unfounded, Baxter County Judge Mickey Pendergrass said. The judge added: “As far as the spiritual Satan goes, we’ve ruled that out. ... An echidna named Matilda at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria, Australia, has an unusual issue, The Guardian reported Monday: She is allergic to ants. The problem? Ants are the main source of food for echidnas, also known as spiny anteaters. After an allergen test revealed the source of Matilda’s health woes, veterinarians developed a special vaccine to build up her immune system. After four years of treatment, she is finally symptom-free. (EXPRESS)

Watch Caps raise banner outside arena

DINING The confrontation between protesters and Sen. Ted Cruz, RTex., and his wife lasted only a minute or so. But the fallout for Fiola, the downtown restaurant where the incident took place, has continued for days, chef and co-owner Fabio Trabocchi said. A week ago, protesters interrupted the Republican senator and his spouse, Heidi, at Fiola. Protesters chanted, “We believe survivors,” a reference to Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault. Dining disruptions have become a way for progressives to express frustration at the Trump administration. In June, protesters confronted Kirstjen Nielsen, the Homeland Security secretary, at MXDC Cocina Mexicana. After the Fiola incident, Fiola’s social media accounts were attacked. Its Yelp page was bombarded with one-star smears. Owners Fabio and Maria Trabocchi and their staff members were threatened, either for not doing

enough to protect Cruz and his wife or for allegedly tipping off the protesters. The Trabocchis issued an email statement over the weekend to friends and regular patrons, explaining that staffers shielded the Cruzes from protesters as they escorted the couple out of the restaurant. Employees then concealed the Cruzes in the kitchen for about 10 minutes until police cleared the protesters. Then, the Cruzes returned to

their table for dinner, Trabocchi said, counter to some reports that the couple left. Many Cruz supporters believe someone at Fiola tipped off protesters to the senator’s reservation, because six of the protesters were already at the bar when the couple arrived. Trabocchi doesn’t know who provided the intel, but he’s hired an investigator to seek some answers. The Trabocchis have also hired a security guard for Fiola,

and are investing more in staff training to try to de-escalate these kinds of situations. Trabocchi said such a charged political atmosphere places more responsibilities on restaurateurs. “There is no restaurant that is ready for this,” the chef said. “It’s a completely new situation, and it’s unfair to expect that a staff working at a restaurant will expose themselves to a physical danger or risk.” TIM CARMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Tipped-pay hike overturned D.C. Council votes to undo Initiative 77 that voters passed in July THE DISTRICT D.C. lawmakers on Tuesday voted to overturn an initiative that would have raised the minimum wage for servers, bartenders and other workers who rely on tips, just four months after voters easily passed the measure. The D.C. Council approved legislation repealing Initiative 77 by a margin of 8-5, the first of two necessary votes. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, says she would sign the repeal legislation. Initiative 77 is part of a national campaign to end a twotier minimum wage system that

allows restaurants and others to pay tipped workers a few dollars an hour as long as customer gratuities add up to the standard minimum wage. The D.C. measure would have gradually raised the current $3.89 hourly tipped wage until it matches the standard minimum wage in 2026. The restaurant industry said the initiative would hurt D.C.’s thriving dining scene, and some workers at high-end establishments argued that they currently earn more than the standard minimum wage in tips and did not want any changes. They worried that if their hourly wage went up, restaurants would cut staff or customers would scale back on tipping. They found a sympathetic audience on the

Council restricts Airbnb The D.C. Council unanimously gave preliminary approval to legislation that makes D.C. one of the most tightly regulated cities in the U.S. when it comes to Airbnb and similar home-sharing services. The legislation, which requires a second vote later this month, represents a victory for the hotel industry. The legislation blocks property owners from using Airbnb and similar companies to rent second homes on a short-term basis. (TWP)

D.C. Council. Mendelson was joined by Council members Anita Bonds, David Grosso, Jack Evans, Brandon Todd, Kenyan McDuffie,

Vincent Gray and Trayon White Sr. Council members Elissa Silverman, Robert White Jr., Brianne Nadeau, Mary Cheh and Charles Allen opposed repeal. Mendelson added some aspects of Silverman’s compromise proposal to his repeal legislation, including a tip line to report wage theft violations and a mandate for restaurant owners and managers to undergo annual training about sexual harassment. Diana Ramirez, who leads the advocacy group behind Initiative 77, said proponents would continue fighting for a pay increase. “The one fair wage movement is something that’s not going away,” said Ramirez. Gov. Ralph Northam warned Tuesday he would veto a redistricting plan that Republicans in Virginia’s House of Delegates hope to approve this month. The lawmakers are set to consider new legislative boundaries in response to a federal court’s ruling that 11 House districts were racially gerrymandered. House Speaker Kirk Cox said Tuesday he would summon lawmakers Oct. 21 to take up a plan passed out of committee last week. If the legislature fails to act by Oct. 30, judges will handle the redistricting themselves. (AP)

local Police say men were part of white nationalist militant group in Calif. CHARLOTTESVILLE Four members of a militant white supremacist group from California have been arrested on charges they traveled to Virginia last year to incite a riot and attack counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally that turned deadly, court documents unsealed Tuesday say. The defendants — Benjamin Drake Daley, Michael Paul

Miselis, Thomas Walter Gillen and Cole Evan White — are part of the Rise Above Movement, which espouses anti-Semitic views and meets regularly in public parks to train in boxing and other fighting techniques, according to an affidavit. The affidavit alleges the four men were “among the most violent individuals present in Charlottesville” on Aug. 11 and 12 of last year. It says photos and video footage shows they attacked counterprotesters, “which in some cases resulted in serious injuries.” “These guys came to

Defend, Detect and Repel efend, and Repelfor small business Part threeDetect of a three-part series on cybersecurity t series on cybersecurity for small business

Fighting back: How small businesses can detect, and recover Why and howrespond to protect a cyberattack l businessfrom from hackers Even though 78% of cyberattacks are aimed at small businesses, only 15% of them have a plan to deal with an attack. (Verizon Enterprise, 2018; Better Business Bureau, 2017) This explains why small business cyberattacks can be so devastating. Losing money and data can be compounded by loss of reputation, customers and intellectual property. “They might pay in a ransomware attack and still not get their data back,” says Megan Wright, a Technology Advisor with Dell Small Business. “Small businesses can just get wiped out.” Before an attack: Back up data and keep the network secure Many cyberattacks are aimed squarely at your data. In ransomware attacks, data is held hostage for a cash payment. In other cases, hackers may be after customer data or account numbers. Wright encourages all small businesses to back up all critical data. A strong backup plan involves: • Automation: Make sure critical data is identified and backed up regularly • Redundancy: Ideally you will have local and cloud backups • Isolation: Backups should be sequestered from the main network

• Accessibility: Someone should know how to access the backup Businesses need to practice good basic security as well: strong passwords, the latest laptops equipped with security-enhancing 8th gen Intel® Core™ i5 vPro™ processors and hardware login security like TP M 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module), fingerprint readers and facial recognition, and installing anti-virus and firewall solutions. Small businesses should also assign someone responsibility for information security. During an attack: Detect, report and react The first rule is don’t panic. The second is to act fast. The employee tasked with security should immediately track down, isolate and remove the infection, or bring in someone who can. Since many attacks come through email and the web, all employees should be trained to spot and report them. “I tell small businesses, security doesn’t just come from me as a

technology advisor,” says Wright. “It has to be a priority for the entire business.” Employees also need to be on the lookout for financial scams, like urgent orders to transfer money supposedly from business leaders. “Make it a policy to be over-cautious,” Wright says. After an attack: Getting back on your feet A business with a solid incident response plan will be able to recover much faster than one that needs to rebuild. “Remove affected devices and files and swap in your clean backup files,” Wright said. “Depending on the level of the attack, you might also bring it to the authorities.” Small businesses need to make sure they secure the trust of their customers. “Your customers are why you exist,” said Wright. “They trust you with their data. That is worth all the protection you can give it.”

Get back on your feet: When appropriate alert affected parties and swap in your backup.

Federal employees’ premiums will increase 1.5 percent on average HEALTH The enrollee share of premiums in the health care program for federal employees and retirees will increase by 1.5 percent on average in 2019, although there will be decreases in some plans, including in the two Blue Cross and Blue Shield options that

GOP men’s tide of rage Kavanaugh allegations trigger outbreak of male resentment toward rise of #MeToo Democrats hit Kavanaugh on his credibility

Cosby,” Graham said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.” Public opinion on Kavanaugh breaks down along gender lines. Women oppose his confirmation, 55 percent to 37 percent, while men support it, 49 percent to 40 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday. The survey found that 48 percent of American voters most believe Ford, while 41 percent most believe Kavanaugh. Jennifer Palmieri, a Democratic strategist and author of “Dear Madam President,” a book about reimagining women in leadership roles, said the nation’s fast-changing culture can be frightening to men in power. “A lot of white men don’t know what it’s like to feel threatened, powerless and frustrated,” Palmieri said. “As we go through the reckoning of this lopsided power balance, there’s going to be a lot more of this.” PHILIP RUCKER AND

POLITICS Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s temperament and credibility emerged as flashpoints Tuesday in the battle over his Supreme Court nomination, with Democrats increasingly pointing to his at times testy and emotional performance at last week’s Senate hearing. The strategy came as the FBI conducts a limited investigation into allegations of sexual assault by Kavanaugh. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., above, said last week’s hearing, at which Christine Blasey Ford alleged a drunken sexual assault in the early 1980s, left him with great concerns about Kavanaugh’s truthfulness. Schumer said Kavanaugh “has grossly mischaracterized his relationship with alcohol,” and that he “tiptoes around the truth.” Other Democrats — and one key Republican, Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona — also raised questions Tuesday about Kavanaugh’s temperament. Nevertheless, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., doubled down Tuesday on his vow to hold a vote by the end of the week on Kavanaugh, saying he was the victim of open “floodgates of mud and muck.” As he left the White House on Tuesday, President Trump continued to voice support for Kavanaugh but told reporters it would “not be acceptable” if the FBI demonstrated that he had lied. POLITICS The sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh have sparked a wave of unbridled anger and anxiety from many Republican men, who say they are in danger of being swept up by false accusers who are biased against them. From President Trump to his namesake son to Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the howls of outrage crystallize a strong current of grievance within a party whose leadership is almost entirely white and overwhelmingly male — and which does not make a secret of its fear that demographic shifts and cultural convulsions could jeopardize its grip on power. This outbreak of male resentment now seems likely to play a defining role in the midterm elections just five weeks away, contrasting with a burst of enthusiasm among women propelling Democratic campaigns and inspired by the #MeToo movement. “I’ve got boys and I’ve got girls, and when I see what’s going on right now, it’s scary,” Donald Trump Jr., a father of five small children, said in an interview with DailyMailTV aired Monday. Asked whether he was more worried about his sons or daughters, Trump Jr. said, “Right now, I’d say my sons.” The rallying cry was Kavanaugh’s enraged plea of innocence before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which heard emotional testimony from Christine Blasey Ford that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when he was 17 and she was 15. Trump has defended Kavanaugh and said the accusations by Ford and two other women are unfair to the judge and his family. The president — who himself has denied claims of sexual assault by more than a dozen women — has

repeatedly stood behind other accused men in positions of power, including former Senate candidate Roy Moore after the Alabama Republican was accused of sexual misconduct with teenage girls. “The trauma for a man that’s never had any accusation — he’s never had a bad statement about him,” Trump told reporters on Monday, sympathizing with Kavanaugh’s experience. “It’s unfair to him at this point. What his wife is going through, what his beautiful children are going through is not describable.” Veteran GOP pollster Frank Luntz said that among Republicans, “There is a feeling of being guilty until proven innocent. In this era of #MeToo, there are a lot of men — and some women — who believe that justice no longer exists in America, that the accusation is enough to destroy someone’s career and someone’s life. That wasn’t manifesting itself politically until” late last week.

“I say that it’s a very scary time for young men in America, when you can be guilty of something that you may not be guilty of.” PRESIDENT TRUMP, saying Tuesday that it was troubling that people were found “automatically guilty” and had to prove their innocence

Kavanaugh’s defenders say the judge is being caught in a #MeToo riptide and unfairly grouped with serial predators — such as Bill Cosby, who has been accused of sexual assault or harassment by more than 60 women. “I think you’re trying to portray him as a stumbling, bumbling drunk, gang rapist, who during high school and college was Bill

Aid slow to reach Sulawesi

With food and water scarce, quake survivors are growing desperate

PALU, INDONESIA Trucks carrying food for desperate survivors of the earthquake on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island rolled in with a police escort Tuesday to guard against looters, while the death toll from the disaster soared past 1,200. Four days after the magnitude 7.5 earthquake and tsunami struck, supplies of food, water, fuel and medicine had yet to reach the hardest-hit areas outside Palu, the largest city that was heavily damaged. Many roads in the earthquake zone are blocked and communications lines are down. “We feel like we are stepchildren here because all the help is going to Palu, said Mohamad Taufik, 38, from the town of Donggala, where five of his relatives are still missing. “There are many young children here who are hungry and sick, but there is no milk or medicine. The death toll reached 1,234, national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in Jakarta, the capital. Hundreds of other people were injured, and scores of uncounted bodies might still be buried in collapsed buildings in Sigi and Balaroa under quicksand-like mud. The U.N. humanitarian office reported that “needs are vast, with people urgently requiring shelter, clean water, food, fuel and emergency medical care. Water is the main issue

A boy in the hard-hit town of Donggala, Indonesia, stands in front of a ship left stranded by last week’s tsunami.

because most of the supply infrastructure has been damaged, U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York. More than 25 countries offered assistance after Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi Widodo appealed for international help. Little of that, however, has reached the disaster zone, and increasingly desperate residents grabbed food and fuel from damaged stores and begged for help.

An aircraft carrying 3,170 gallons of fuel had arrived, and trucks with food were on the way with police escorts to guard against looters. Many gas stations were inoperable because of quake damage or from people stealing fuel, Nugroho said. The frustration of waiting for days without help has angered some survivors. “Pay attention to Donggala, Mr. Jokowi. Pay attention to Donggala, yelled one resident in a video broadcast on local TV,

referring to the president. The town’s administrative head, Kasman Lassa, all but gave residents permission to take food — but nothing else — from stores. “Everyone is hungry and they want to eat after several days of not eating, Lassa said on local TV. “We have anticipated it by providing food, rice, but it was not enough. There are many people here. So, on this issue, we cannot pressure them to hold much longer. NINIEK KARMINI AND STEPHEN WRIGHT (AP)

About 20 percent expect to be worse off. The poll, by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and MTV, found that half of 15- to 26-year-olds think they will eventually be better off than their parents in terms of household finances. Parents were slightly more optimistic: 60 percent think their children will do better than they did. (AP) Passengers left stranded as Nordic budget airline Primera Air abruptly ceases operations

BUSINESS Amazon is boosting its minimum wage for all U.S. workers to $15 per hour starting next month and said it will push for an increase in the federally mandated minimum wage, which now stands at $7.25 per hour. The company, whose value topped $1 trillion briefly in September, was facing political and economic pressure to raise pay for thousands of employees. “We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do and decided we want to lead, said Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and CEO, who owns Express. The wage hike also comes as Amazon needs to hire holiday workers amid the tightest job market in nearly two decades, making it more difficult to lure workers who have a lot more job choices than just a year ago. Amazon said it plans to hire more than 100,000 holiday workers, who will pack and ship boxes in its more than 100 warehouses around the country. Amazon said Tuesday that the raise will benefit more than 350,000 workers, which includes full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal positions. Employees at Whole Foods, which Amazon also owns, will get the same pay hike. Amazon has faced criticism from labor rights groups and others over pay and working conditions at its warehouses. NYT: Trump and father profited from tax fraud

WASHINGTON The Trump administration is quietly moving to weaken U.S. radiation regulations, turning to scientific outliers who argue that a bit of radiation damage is actually good for you — like a little bit of sunlight. The government’s current, decades-old guidance says that any exposure to harmful radiation is a cancer risk. And critics say the proposed change could lead to higher levels of exposure for workers at nuclear installations and oil and gas drilling sites, medical workers doing

X-rays and CT scans, people living next to Superfund sites and any members of the public who one day might find themselves exposed to a radiation release. The Trump administration already has targeted a range of other regulations on toxins and pollutants, including coal power plant emissions and car exhaust, that it sees as costly and burdensome for businesses. Supporters of the EPA’s new radiation guidance argue the government’s current no-tolerance rule for radiation damage forces unnecessary spending for handling exposure in accidents, at nuclear plants, in medical centers and at other sites. “This would have a positive effect on human health as well as save billions and billions and

The EPA’s proposed change could expose workers such as X-ray techs to higher levels of radiation.

billions of dollars, Edward Calabrese, a toxicologist at the University of Massachusetts, said in 2016. Calabrese and his supporters argue that smaller

exposures of cell-damaging radiation and other carcinogens can serve as stressors that activate the body’s repair mechanisms and can make people healthier. EPA spokesman John Konkus said in an email that the proposed rule change is about “increasing transparency on assumptions about how the body responds to different doses of dangerous substances and that the EPA “acknowledges uncertainty regarding health effects at low doses. But Jan Beyea, a physicist whose work includes research on the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, said the EPA science proposal represents voices “generally dismissed by the great bulk of scientists.

WASHINGTON Lawmakers and gay rights advocates are criticizing a new State Department policy that denies family visas to the same-sex domestic partners of diplomats posted in the U.S. and gives those already in the country three months to marry or lose their visas. The change reverses a policy put in place in 2009 under then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that defined family to include domestic partners of diplomats posted at embassies or the United Nations. That allowed them to obtain visas and accompany their diplomat partners as household members, a status that was not extended to unmarried heterosexual couples. A State Department official said the change, which took effect Monday, was made to “ensure and promote equal treatment for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples. The State Department gave affected couples until Dec. 31 to marry and present a valid marriage certificate. Those who do not will have to seek a change of visa status or leave the country to seek a new visa abroad. Critics said there was no reason for the change and that having spousal visas in the passports of same-sex domestic partners could expose them to prosecution and punishment in countries where homosexuality is illegal. Story alleges president received $413M, much of it via dubious means POLITICS The New York Times reported Tuesday that President Trump received at least $413 million from his father over the decades, much of that through dubious tax dodges, including outright fraud. The 15,000-word Times report contradicts Trump’s portrayal of himself as a self-made billionaire who started with just a $1 million loan from his father. The Times says Trump and his father, Fred, avoided gift and inheritance taxes by setting up a sham corporation and undervaluing assets to tax authorities. The Times says its report is based on more than 100,000 pages of financial documents, including confidential tax returns from the father and his companies. A lawyer for Trump, Charles J. Harder, told The Times that there was no “fraud or tax evasion and that the facts cited in the report are “extremely inaccurate. The New York state tax department said that it is reviewing the allegations in The Times and “is vigorously pursuing all appropriate avenues of investigation. The department typically refers findings to the state attorney general’s office. DISCOVERIES

A New York Times investigation has found that President Trump’s father, Fred Trump, transferred large sums of money to his children.

his children through a sham company owned by the children called All County Building Supply & Maintenance. Set up in 1992 ostensibly as a purchasing agent to supply Fred Trump’s buildings with boilers, cleaning supplies and other goods, the father would pad invoices with markups of 20 percent or even 50 percent, thereby avoiding gift taxes, the newspaper reports. The Times says that before Fred Trump died in the late 1990s, he transferred ownership of most of his real estate empire to his four living children. The value of the properties in tax returns summed up to $41.4 million, vastly less than The Times

says they were worth. The same properties would be sold off over the next decade for more than 16 times that amount. In total, the president’s father and mother transferred over $1 billion to their children. That should have produced a tax bill of at least $550 million, based on a 55 percent tax on gifts and inheritance at the time. Instead, the children paid $52.2 million, or about 5 percent. Tax experts say that Trump is unlikely to face criminal prosecution in helping his parents evade taxes because the maneuvers occurred long ago and are past the statute of limitations. (AP)

First woman in 55 years wins physics Nobel SCIENCE Scientists from the United States, Canada and France won the Nobel Prize in physics Tuesday for revolutionizing the use of lasers in research, finding ways to make them deliver more powerful flashes of light and even to act like tiny tweezers. Their work paved the way for laser eye surgery to improve vision and studies that can manipulate cells and their innards. Two winners also made history for other reasons. Arthur Ashkin, the American who developed “optical tweezers, became the oldest Nobel Prize laureate, at age 96. And Donna Strickland, above, of the University of Waterloo in Canada, became only the third woman to win the physics Nobel. Strickland and the third winner, Frenchman Gerard Mourou of the Ecole Polytechnique and University of Michigan, developed a way to generate high-intensity, ultra-short bursts of laser light. They share half of the $1.01 million prize, while the other half goes to Ashkin, who worked at Bell Labs in New Jersey. Ashkin said he was pleasantly surprised when he got the call. “I’m very old and had given up worrying about things like Nobel Prizes, he said. Strickland’s award was the first physics Nobel to go to a woman since 1963. “We need to celebrate women physicists because we’re out there. Bradley Beal tumbles to the floor during an exhibition with the Knicks that had 83 foul calls.

Oakland will start reliever vs. Yankees

One sloppy exhibition

First preseason game shows that Wizards must foul less and hit more 3-point shots NBA Through the first half of the Wizards’ first exhibition game, players found it hard to get into a rhythm against the Knicks. The whistles from referees chirped early and often: Otto Porter Jr. was tagged with a pair of personal fouls in the opening minutes, and 10 players across both teams finished with at least four fouls. The constant stoppage of play was expected, coach Scott Brooks said after the 124-121

overtime loss Monday at Capital One Arena, but the 83 fouls and 90 combined free throws still seemed excessive. “We knew going into the game that a lot of the time in exhibitions, there are a high number of free throws,” Brooks said. “I don’t think any of us thought there would be 90. We have to adjust, and we have to play defense without fouling. I’m sure they will say the same thing also.” Markieff Morris addressed the two major headlines of the game:

his second-quarter ejection — he received his second technical foul before halftime after bumping shoulders and trading words with Knicks rookie Mitchell Robinson — and the many fouls. The burly forward, who already wasn’t a fan of the officiating crew, compared the game to the NFL’s ongoing problem with penalties against defensive players. “It’s a man’s sport. You got to be able to touch another player. That’s how the game go,” Morris said, cracking a slight grin. “Just like football. They want to let the quarterbacks down, put a pillow under they head and call roughing the passer. It’s the same thing.” Other than calling fouls, the officials got a workout observing the Wizards’ offensive sets. They constantly had to raise their hands to signal a 3-point attempt. Shooting more 3s ranks among the Wizards’ top priorities, and Monday the team chucked 38 from beyond the arc. Even center Ian Mahinmi, who had attempted

only eight deep looks in his 11year career, confidently hoisted a pair. He made one, causing teammate Jason Smith to leap from his sideline seat and celebrate. Mahinmi’s one make, however, accounted for more than John Wall (0 for 2) and Austin Rivers (0 for 3). As a team, the Wizards connected on only 21.1 percent of their long shots (8 for 38). Rivers, a newcomer to the Wizards, said the team’s opening performance should not cause alarm. “Yeah, it was the first game. Guys are missing wide-open looks. I’m not really worried about it,” he said. “We have too many guys that can hit those threes. We’ll be fine.” New Wizards center Dwight Howard continued to sit out with a sore back. Washington plays its next preseason game at home against the Heat on Friday (7 p.m., NBCSWA) and visits the Knicks on Monday. CANDACE BUCKNER

Liam Hendriks was designated for assignment by the Athletics and cleared waivers in June, but tonight he’ll open Oakland’s biggest game of the year. The reliever will start opposite Yankees ace Luis Severino in the AL wild-card game tonight (8:08, TBS) in New York. Hendriks, 29, will be only the fourth pitcher to start a playoff game after a regular season of no wins, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The right-hander was 0-1 with a 4.13 ERA in 25 games this year. He was 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA in eight September starts of 1⅔ innings or fewer. Following injuries to Sean Manaea, Jharel Cotton and several others, Oakland manager Bob Melvin used 15 starters. (AP)

Caps hope to cure hangover Abbreviated offseason and decrease in pressure challenge the champs after long Stanley Cup celebration Ovechkin at his best After what can only be described as the best summer of his life — a season in which he secured his legacy with a Stanley Cup and saw the birth of his first child, son Sergei — Alex Ovechkin, near left, seems lighter. With a short summer, maybe he never got out of shape and thus never had to whip himself back into form. Longtime teammate Nicklas Backstrom, far left, has noticed a more figurative weight off the Capitals’ captain. “It looks like he’s in the best mode ever,” Backstrom said. “He’s just laughing all the time, which is great. He’s going to carry this over, I think. The way he was playing last year and the way he was relaxed, too, I think it’s just unbelievable for us in the locker room to see.” BYLINE (SOURCE)

JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NHL Since winning the Stanley Cup in June, the Capitals continue to reap the benefits. When they returned for training camp last month, they weren’t peppered with questions about how to recover from another playoff disappointment. Instead, players shared tales of how they spent their time with the Cup and discussed how motivated they are to do it again. “I think the organization feels a little bit different,” general manager Brian MacLellan said. “There’s less tension or pressure. It doesn’t mean that we don’t want to win or repeat. It just feels different. It feels a little more relaxed.” If a dark cloud hung over the team last fall, it feels like clear skies this year. But, the Capitals know, that doesn’t mean the forecast won’t soon change. There’s a reason that the Penguins are the only team to repeat as champions (2016-17) in the last 20 years. “At some poi nt, it’s go ing to be hard,” defenseman Matt Niskanen said. “I don’t know when it’s going to come, but I’m guessing based on past teams that have won, we’re going to hit a tough portion of the season.” Among the biggest questions facing the Capitals ahead of tonight’s season opener against Boston (7:30, NBCSN) at Capital One Arena is whether the defending champs can avoid the proverbial Stanley Cup hangover. It’s a widely held belief that all that goes into a deep postseason run — and all the raucous celebrations that follow — make it tough for the reigning champs to be fully engaged mentally and physically the following season. “It’s no secret,” forward Tom Wilson said. “... You go from playing on the biggest stage, you play

(THE WASHINGTON POST)

the biggest game in your life and then you have an offseason and then it’s Game 1 again. We’re all human, that’s normal.” The Capitals also open the year with a target on their backs as 30 other teams measure themselves against the league’s best. Alex Ovechkin, who led the NHL in goal scoring last season for a record seventh time, said the Capitals can’t afford to ease into the regular season. “It’s every team is going to try to beat us,” he said. “But, for us, we just have to play the same way, at the same pace ... especially at the beginning of the year, because if you don’t win those games, in the end you’re probably going to miss a couple points and you’re going to go,

Capitals’ projected 1st line: Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Wilson

‘Oh, Jesus, why did we have a bad start?’ ” Playing 24 postseason games makes it harder for the players to be in optimal condition. Some were hit with harsh realities during an abbreviated summer. “Your first day of hard workouts, everyone else at your gym is already a month-and-a-half into theirs,” forward Brett Connolly said. “So it’s different. You notice it.” Fourth-line winger Devante Smith-Pelly, a postseason hero last spring, struggled with his conditioning at the start of camp. The Capitals chose not to dress him for their first five preseason games. The players were largely left on their own to determine when

2nd line: Vrana-Backstrom-Oshie

to begin their offseason training. Center Lars Eller didn’t start skating until mid-August, about two weeks later than usual. Even then, Eller said, he didn’t skate as frequently in August and September as he had in years past. “Even in mid-August I was like, ‘I don’t really feel like being out here,’ ” Eller said. “And it’s important that you don’t have that feeling a month into the season like, ‘Oh, now I’ve got to practice again,’ because you practiced so much in July. You really needed much more rest from such a long playoff run.” Defenseman Brooks Orpik is the only player on the team to play for a defending Cup champion. Orpik was part of the 200910 Penguins, who went 9-1-0 to

3rd line: Burakovsky-Eller-Connolly

start their title defense. He said the Capitals will have to ignore the built-in excuses. “Everyone says, ‘Oh, it’s a long season, you should be tired, you should be fatigued,’ ” Orpik said. “And if you let people convince you that you’re tired, then you’re going to feel tired. In our case, guys for the most part came into camp rested and ready to go.” The Capitals also enter the season with a healthy swagger as they finally know what it takes to finish on top. “That reassurance of winning the Stanley Cup with the guys we have is something that sticks with you that you can do it,” forward T.J. Oshie said. “Whereas before, I feel like there were doubts.” BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

Eighteen of the 20 players who dressed for the Cup-clinching Game 5 victory in Las Vegas are back for 2018-19. Although roster competition was limited in training camp with much of the band back together, the Capitals still have a number of burning questions heading into the new season. Season opens without angst for Caps fans

Does Kuznetsov have another level?

Can Burakovsky realize his potential?

How will Holtby handle more work?

What can Ovechkin do for an encore?

How will the Capitals replace Beagle?

Evgeny Kuznetsov led the NHL in postseason scoring last spring with 32 points in 24 games, but general manager Brian MacLellan said Washington’s No. 1 center has a higher ceiling. “I think he can be better still,” MacLellan said last month. “He has potential to be an elite two-way guy in the league.” The Capitals plan to use Kuznetsov — who scored a career-best 27 goals in 79 regular-season games — on the penalty kill and hope he can play better defense when matched up against other elite scorers. He can also improve on faceoffs after winning 44 percent of his draws last season.

The longstanding belief with Andre Burakovsky is that he has untapped potential. While the fifth-year pro has shown flashes (see his two-goal performance in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals), his career has also been defined by injuries and extended scoring droughts. If healthy, the 23-year-old has the talent to be a consistent 20-goal scorer. Last season, he finished with 12 goals and 25 points while appearing in just 56 games. Coach Todd Reirden has a record of developing young defensemen. He’s hopeful he can do the same for Burakovsky, a winger.

Braden Holtby says the more he plays, the better he plays. Washington’s undisputed No. 1 goalie will have a chance to prove that. Inexperienced Pheonix Copley is now his understudy, and Holtby is expected to receive fewer nights off. Handling the majority of the team’s itinerary won’t be foreign to Holtby, who made a league-high 73 appearances in 2014-15. But it will be different from last season, when the Capitals turned to backup Philipp Grubauer (now with Colorado) for an extended run when Holtby slumped. The Caps won’t have that luxury this year.

Beginning with an opening night hat trick and culminating with a Stanley Cup triumph, the 2017-18 season was arguably the best of Alex Ovechkin’s career. In his age-32 season, Ovechkin became the NHL’s oldest goalscoring leader in more than 40 years and was responsible for a leaguehigh 20.9 percent of his team’s scoring. Now that he’s reached the pinnacle, some wonder if Ovechkin might finally slow down. He said the experience of winning the Cup has left him even more motivated. “When you taste it,” he said in camp, “you want it more and more.”

The Caps return 11 of their top 12 forwards, with Jay Beagle the lone exception. The longtime fourth-line center was a key cog on the penalty kill — he led the team’s forwards in shorthanded ice time — and was a reliable faceoff man. It may take a committee to replace Beagle, with Kuznetsov expected to see more time on the PK, Lars Eller, above, potentially taking more late-game faceoffs and newcomer Nic Dowd and Travis Boyd likely to compete for a fourth-line spot. Replacing Beagle’s intangibles — he was long considered the team’s hardest worker — could prove difficult.

CHAMPIONSHIP KEEPSAKE

Rings feature plenty of bling

At a private gathering Monday, Capitals players, coaches and staff got their first look at their names engraved on the Stanley Cup and received their championship rings. The 14-karat white and yellow gold rings feature 230 round diamonds, 22 princess-cut diamonds, 28 taper-cut rubies, seven star-shaped rubies and a star-shaped sapphire. The Capitals’ wordmark on top is surrounded by 27 pavé-set diamonds and 28 taper-cut rubies. (THE WASHINGTON POST) Capitals’ projected 1st defensive pairing: Orlov-Niskanen

3rd defensive pairing: Orpik -Djoos

Dave Widner was at an Elton John concert at Capital One Arena last month when his eyes wandered to the rafters and his mind flashed forward to a night he wasn’t sure he’d ever see. “I thought, ‘That’s where they’ll probably put the banner,’ ” said Widner, a Capitals season-ticket holder since 1974. “I just had to pinch myself. We really did it.” By most accounts, players reported to Capitals camp less tense than in previous years, the weight of past playoff disappointments washed away by the franchise’s first title. Fans like Widner are more relaxed, too, and as Washington prepares to begin its title defense, the still giddy fan base’s mantra might as well be, “It’s all gravy, baby.” “I’ve already seen a lot of tweets where people are like, ‘Hey, we won the championship, who cares?’” said Ian Oland, founder of the fan site Russian Machine Never Breaks. “And I’m with them, to be honest. ... I’m never going to get to the same level of angst that I was last year. I don’t think I can ever reach that level ever again in my lifetime.” That sounds good, even if angst and playoff despair were quintessential parts of being a Capitals fan for so many years. “No matter what happens this year,” season-ticket holder Daniel Mintz said, “I’m going to get to root for the Stanley Cup champions, at least until May or June.” SCOTT ALLEN

Six new coaches take control

Trotz begins his tenure with the Islanders after winning the Cup in D.C.

League makes Wednesday its top night on TV AP AND THE WASHINGTON POST

NHL While Washington watches its Stanley Cup banner rise to the rafters, Barry Trotz will be fresh off a plane in North Carolina, preparing for his own opener. Trotz coached the Capitals to their first title last season. But by winning it, he triggered an automatic contract extension far below market value for top NHL coaches. He resigned less than a week after the parade and joined the New York Islanders. The Islanders are one of six teams with a new coach this season. The cross-town Rangers went the college route by hiring David Quinn from Boston University, while the Dallas Stars hired Jim Montgomery from the University of Denver. The Carolina Hurricanes promoted assistant Rod Brind’Amour to replace Bill Peters when he left for Calgary and the Capitals made the no-brainer choice of elevating associate coach Todd Reirden to take over for Trotz. As Trotz begins what he and

The Caps expect a smooth transition under former assistant Todd Reirden, left, as Barry Trotz leads the Islanders.

general manager Lou Lamoriello hope is an organizational culture change with the Islanders, Reirden has assumed control of a team he knows well from four years as an assistant. Familiarity is Reirden’s biggest asset as he becomes just the fourth coach to take over a defending champion. “This is probably going to be the smoothest transition of any coaching change that I’ve ever heard of,” Capitals winger

T.J. Oshie said. “Everyone respects Todd, respects the way he coaches, respects how he treats people. What a guy Trotzy is. He’s going to be missed. But he’s on the other side now.” Trotz bears significant responsibility for changing the culture around the Capitals, buttoning down structure and fostering the right habits for success. New York doesn’t have the talent his old Washington teams

did, especially after captain John Tavares left to sign with Toronto, but the Islanders will get a taste of how Trotz makes teams perform better than they look on paper. “When you say culture change, it’s just a way of doing things,” Trotz said. “It may be the way we present ourselves, the way we react, the way we respond to adversity and all those things.” STEPHEN WHYNO (AP)

The top challengers to the Capitals in the East

They came as close as any team in the last 35 years to winning three straight titles — losing to the Caps in the Eastern Conference semifinals — but they ran out of gas. Forwards Sidney Crosby, left, and Evgeni Malkin are always dangerous, and the team added defenseman Jack Johnson in free agency.

Signing hometown hero John Tavares to a sevenyear, $77 million deal has raised optimism that Toronto can win its first Stanley Cup since 1967. With developing young stars Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, the Leafs hope to avoid a third straight exit in the first round of the playoffs.

General manager Steve Yzerman’s resignation was a surprise, but little has changed for the team with the best record in the East last season. Leading scorer Nikita Kucherov signed an eight-year extension in July, Victor Hedman won the Norris Trophy and Steven Stamkos is still playing at a high level.

The Bruins see this season as their best and possibly last chance to win with defenseman Zdeno Chara, who turns 42 this season. Goalie Tuukka Rask and forwards Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Krejci are the only other players remaining from the 2011 Stanley Cup team.

Capitals claim forward Dmitrij Jaskin, who had 17 points for Blues last year, off waivers

NHL Fans have often criticized NBC’s NHL coverage for not showing more of the league’s young stars and up-and-coming teams. That changes tonight as the network goes with a new approach. NBCSN’s “Wednesday Night Rivalries” has been replaced by “Wednesday Night Hockey.” As part of the repackaging, the network’s studio crew will occasionally report on site, starting tonight from Washington when the Capitals host the Bruins. “The intent on Wednesday nights has always been to make it the destination night for hockey. Now we can really take advantage of that,” NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood said. Much as the NBA does on Thursdays and the NFL does on “Monday Night Football,” the NHL hopes to make Wednesday its night for must-see TV. The biggest beneficiaries of the change are the Western Conference teams. NBCSN will air 18 doubleheaders on Wednesday nights — up from five last season — and 67 of the scheduled 110 games on NBC and NBCSN will have a team from the conference. Chicago will have the most appearances (19) despite missing the playoffs last season. One such game will be the Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium on Jan. 1 against Boston. Washington will appear 18 times, followed by Philadelphia (17) and Pittsburgh (15). JOE REEDY (AP)

Defenseman Michal Kempny (concussion) expected to miss at least 2 games for Caps

Lil Wayne unleashed

Anticipation of the fifth installment of Lil Wayne’s “Carter” series has lasted longer than a lot of people’s rap careers. But early Friday morning, he finally put “Tha Carter V” into the world. The 23-track album, the sequel to 2011’s “Tha Carter IV,” had been held up for years over legal issues. In the meantime, Wayne did put out some new music in 2015: the mixtape “Sorry 4 the Wait 2” and the “Free Weezy Album.” But “Tha Carter V” is the main event — here’s what you need to know. SONIA RAO AND ELAHE IZADI (THE WASHINGTON POST) 1

Why was it delayed?

“Tha Carter V” had first been scheduled for a December 2014 release but got held up as Wayne’s relationships with his label, Cash Money Records, and his longtime collaborator Birdman deteriorated. Wayne sued the label and Birdman, its co-founder, for $51 million over the delays, among other things, according to a lawsuit obtained by TMZ in January 2015. The next month, Wayne told Rolling Stone that “Tha Carter V” was “super done.” “I would have released it yesterday if I could,” he added. “But it’s a dead subject right now. It’s a jewel in the safe.” Reports emerged this past May that the suit had been settled. A month later, Wayne’s lawyer, Ron Sweeney, released a statement to Billboard: “Per our settlement agreement, the matter has been amicably resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.”

51%

2

There are other Carters

Reginae Carter, Wayne’s 19-year-old daughter, sings the chorus of “Famous.” Wayne’s mother, Jacida Carter, opens the “Tha Carter V” with the teary spoken-word track “I Love You Dwayne” and appears throughout the album — and on its cover. “Lil Wayne, mama proud of you,” she says. “You done came so far. I can’t wait for your album to come out.” 3

XXXTentacion lives on

XXXTentacion died in June at age 20 after being shot at a motorcycle dealership in South Florida. The rapper’s work continues here, as he is featured on “Don’t Cry,” the second track of “Tha Carter V,” which deals with death. XXXTentacion will also be featured in Kanye West’s album “Yandhi,” set to come out Nov. 23.

4

But where’s Drake?

Not here, apparently — at least not at length. While some have pointed out that the guy who raps, “Weezy, where you been? The people miss you,” on the track “Hittas” sure sounds a lot like Drake, the Toronto rapper doesn’t appear in the album credits. Because the two have collaborated for years and even toured together, fans were surprised by Drake’s absence. 5

There are plenty of guests

You know who is on the album? Barack Obama! Wayne closes “Dedicate” by sampling an Obama speech: “They might think they’ve got a pretty good jump shot, or a pretty good flow,” he says. “But our kids can’t all aspire to be LeBron or Lil Wayne!” Others on the album: Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Ashanti.

6

Shkreli got a sneak peek?

Uh, yeah. Disgraced pharmaceutical CEO Martin Shkreli claimed in December 2016 that he had legally acquired “Tha Carter V.” Shkreli reportedly got a CD after Wayne left it in a car he sold. Shkreli then leaked part of the album, after which, according to TMZ, Wayne’s team sent him a cease-and-desist letter. Earlier this year, a federal district court ordered Shkreli to forfeit the album. 7

GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

6

Cher covers ABBA in dreariness Put your hand up if you’ve ever asked for an album of ABBA covers by Cher. Crickets? OK. The whiff of a quick buck is so sour on “Dancing Queen,” released Friday, that it taints the Swedish band’s bubbly compositions. After appearing in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” Cher offers a strangely cold 10-track collection of classic ABBA songs, including “Waterloo,” ‘’Mamma Mia” and “SOS.” Her take on “The Winner Takes It All” is especially preposterous and pompous. Only one song, “One of Us,” reinterprets the original into something somewhat stirring and thoughtful. MARK KENNEDY (AP)

Is Lil Wayne retiring?

Sadly, yes. After Wayne first announced “Tha Carter V” in 2012, he also told MTV that he would retire after the album’s anticipated release in December 2014. Things obviously didn’t go as planned, so who knows whether the rapper will stick to his word? Maybe Weezy leans more Brett Favre than Daniel Day-Lewis.

A year later, box set pays tribute to Petty

ancing Easy fin s. $149/mo

MUSIC Tom Petty’s family and former band members say it was like therapy to compile a four-disc box set of his music so quickly after he died. “An American Treasure” went on sale Friday, four days short of a year after Petty died at age 66 after an accidental overdose. He and his band, The Heartbreakers, had just completed a triumphant concert tour with a show back home in Los Angeles. “I felt like when Prince died, unfortunately from a similar situation, that there was no central place to grieve for fans or for anyone, to make sense out of the greatness of that artist,” says daughter Adria Petty, an instigator of the box set alongside Petty’s widow, Dana; Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench; and producer Ryan Ulyate. Each disc follows a time period: years as hungry newcomers in the 1970s, the hit-making period of the 1980s, Petty’s rough 1990s when he dealt with divorce and a heroin addiction, and his latecareer renaissance in the 2000s. What’s notable is the consistency of the work, the clarity of

“An American Treasure” came out nearly one year after Tom Petty’s death at age 66.

the writing. Petty was a rock ‘n’ roll classicist from the beginning and thoroughly loyal: Campbell and Tench followed Petty west from their homes in Gainesville, Fla., and they worked together throughout their lives. Ten of the songs had never been released, 18 are alternate versions of songs previously released, 14 are live cuts and 18 are songs that had already been on albums or singles. Well-known songs like “Breakdown,” “Even the Losers” and “I Won’t Back Down” are included; others like “American Girl,” “Don’t Do Me Like That” and “Free Fallin’ ” are not.

“It was good to hear all of this stuff,” Tench says. “It kind of validated my opinion of him.” It’s not clear whether Petty’s Heartbreakers will ever surface as a unit again. Petty was obviously the leader, but they weren’t a backing band. While they’ve been approached for projects, nothing has felt right. “If somebody wanted to get together at the place where we used to record and rehearse, the Clubhouse, and play a little, I’d go down for sure,” Tench said. “But as far as being a band? Gaga fans create fake accounts just to tweet out negative reviews of the movie “Venom” and push people to see Gaga in “A Star Is Born.” Both movies come out this weekend, but “A Star Is Born” has been pegged as an early Oscar contender.
