A burglar made a clean getaway from Nelly’s Taqueria in Hicksville, N.Y., after emptying the register of $100, cooking a meal and washing the dishes. Security video showed him putting on food-service gloves and heating up a pot before hammering open the register around 2 a.m. Tuesday. Then, proprietor Will Colon said, the intruder started cooking beans, chicken and shrimp. “The dude had some skills,” Colon said. (AP)

All hail the Nats’ mayor NATIONALS Think this town ain’t big enough for two mayors? Think again. For almost a decade, Section 135 of Nationals Park has been home to a superfan in twinkling gloves and sequin jackets — and with killer dance moves — who is affectionately known as “The Mayor of NatsTown.” Fellow fans will be looking for him when the National League Division Series starts Friday and Saturday evenings against the Chicago Cubs. “Every time I see him, I scream out, ‘Hey, Mayor,’ and he screams out, ‘Hey, JoJo,’ ” says JoJo Eggleston, a beer vendor who has worked part time at the stadium for about 13 years. “Not only does he love the game, he loves the Nationals.” The two even have a secret handshake. This self-appointed mayor’s true identity is 36-year-old Tripp Whitbeck, a New York City-born

lawyer-turned-salesman who was raised on the New York Mets. “I’ve always sort of rooted for the teams that I’m near, the teams that are treating me well,” he says. That dates back to high school, when he would show up to games painted red, and undergrad years at Amherst College, where he was the mascot. The catch? At the time, Amherst didn’t actually have a mascot. Whitbeck just started going to games as “this guy on the sidelines painted purple.” He later added a costume and the moniker “Lord Jeff” and got the college president’s seal of approval. Being the mayor allows Whitbeck — who performed in musical theater as a child — to “be a performer, in a way, without rejection.” His living room is like his own costume closet, with two garbage bags chock-full of wigs, glasses, socks, headbands — the works! — at his fingertips. He goes through about 40 light-up gloves per season, and attends

Rocky road for bike shares THE DISTRICT

Electrical malfunction started Logan Circle fire

JERRY JACKSON (BALTIMORE SUN)

TRANSPORTATION Last fall, then-Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake touted Baltimore’s new bike-rental system as a sign of the city’s progress. “Our bike-share program will provide citizens with convenient and on-demand access to bikes for short-distance trips throughout the city,” she said. “This is going to be great.” By summer, most of the 25 bike stations scattered around the city’s downtown and tourist areas were empty. Many of the 230 bikes were unaccounted for. Others had been found badly battered. About 100 bikes were in the shop on a given day in August, so many that keeping up with repairs was impossible. So the city chose to shut down the program, work on a solution and possibly start over. “It wasn’t an easy decision,” said Veronica McBeth, the city’s transit chief. “But a smart decision in the long run.” If Baltimore takes the right steps, experts say, this rough start will go down as merely a temporary setback like those that many cities have overcome — although few have been forced to take as drastic measures as Charm City. Incidents of theft and vandalism in modern bike sharing are relatively low, studies show. Major programs such as those in Paris and New York have struggled with it and yet have

gone on to become some of the most successful as measured by the rates of usage per bike. “While Baltimore is experiencing this, it is very important to not become too demotivated by this experience and try different techniques and methods as other operators have in the past,” said Susan Shaheen, a researcher who studies the sharing economy at the Transportation Sustainability Research Center at the University of California at Berkeley. In New York, a Citi Bike bicycle was snatched even before the program — with a fleet of 6,000 bicycles at the time — had officially launched in 2013. In Paris, about 80 percent of the initial 20,600 Vélib’ bikes had been stolen or damaged two years into the program. By 2013, Vélib’ was on the brink of

a major scaling back because of the damaged bikes. Baltimore officials would not disclose how many bikes are assumed gone, but users of the program struggled to find bikes on the racks all summer. Thieves were ripping bikes off the stations to later dump them in alleys and on sidewalks. A teenager was caught on video “rocking the bike

and jarring it loose,” police said. The Baltimore Sun reported that as many as 30 bikes were stolen in a single day. The city shut down the program Sept. 17 to make security improvements, and officials hope to reopen by Oct. 15, with a new and improved locking system. “What is different about Baltimore City is that because our system is small, any bike that comes out for extended maintenance is going to impact the operations,” said Liz Cornish, executive director of the Baltimore-based advocacy group Bikemore. The challenge now for the city, she said, is to “figure out how to minimize the risk so that we are not putting people in a position where the crime is easy to commit.” LUZ L A ZO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

local City feared that a loss in high court could hurt weapon laws nationally THE DISTRICT District officials will not appeal a court order blocking enforcement of the city’s restrictions on the carrying of concealed guns in public, setting the stage for what could be a marked increase in firearms in the nation’s capital. The city’s decision not to risk an appeal to the Supreme Court comes as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit

is expected to issue an order enforcing its recent ruling that struck down D.C.’s requirement that people seeking licenses to carry concealed weapons must demonstrate a “good reason” — such as a credible fear of violence — for carrying a gun in public. “I continue to believe the District’s ‘good reason’ requirement is a common-sense, and constitutional, gun regulation,” D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine said in announcing the decision with the mayor and police chief. “However, we must reckon with the fact that an adverse decision

by the Supreme Court could have wide-ranging negative effects not just on District residents, but on the country as a whole.” The decision not to go to the high court means permit-seekers can begin applying to carry concealed weapons as soon as the appeals court issues a formal mandate eliminating the “good reason” requirement. It is not yet clear whether city officials will attempt to rewrite the law to enforce additional permit restrictions beyond the requirements the appeals court left intact. PETER JAMISON AND ANN E. Activists blast Bowser after crackdown by ICE 14 immigrants arrested in the District as part of wider federal operation

THE DISTRICT Immigration activists protested outside D.C. City Hall on Wednesday, calling on Mayor Muriel Bowser to do more to help 14 undocumented residents who were arrested last weekend as part of a crackdown by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on cities that oppose President Trump’s immigration policies. Immigration advocates said the arrests, part of “Operation Safe City,” which targeted D.C., New York, Los Angeles and Baltimore,

provided an opportunity for Bowser to take a vocal stand against Trump and defend the city’s most vulnerable residents. Many activists say Bowser — who has not yet publicly commented on the raid — has flubbed that opportunity, but the mayor’s office says its ability to help is limited by congressional Republicans, who have previously forbidden Bowser from using taxpayer money to assist undocumented immigrants in fighting deportation. “Bowser should be doing more,” said Ana Rondon, an activist who came to the District from the Dominican Republic when she was a child. “These

immigrants are paying taxes. They are doing what the government wants. She should be protecting them.” In the District, five of the 14 immigrants arrested had previous criminal convictions, ICE spokeswoman Carissa Cutrell said. Bowser’s administration shares activists’ concerns about the raids, spokeswoman LaToya Foster said. “There is a lot we do not know about ICE’s actions, but what we do know is we are a sanctuary city and that we will continue to do everything we can to protect and defend all residents,” Foster said. NRA open to new gun rules Organization: Device used in Vegas shooting should be regulated

Officials look into gunman’s gambling habit

GEORGE FREY (GETTY IMAGES)

LAS VEGAS The National Rifle Association has joined an effort to restrict a device that was used to accelerate gunfire in the Las Vegas massacre, after the White House and top Republicans signaled a willingness to debate the issue in response the tragedy. “In Las Vegas, reports indicate that certain devices were used to modify the firearms involved. … The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semiautomatic rifles to function like fully automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations,” NRA executive vice president and chief executive Wayne LaPierre said in a joint statement with Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action. The statement from the NRA — its first since Sunday’s shooting — was expected to galvanize the effort to further regulate so-called bump stocks. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Goodlatte, R-Va., said Thursday that lawmakers will consider further rules for the devices, which allow legal semiautomatic rifles to fire as rapidly as more heavily restricted automatic weapons. On Thursday afternoon, White House press secretary Sarah

A bump stock, left, increases firing speed to make a semiautomatic rifle function like a fully automatic rifle.

Huckabee Sanders said that President Trump was open to having the conversation. “We think that we should have that conversation. And we want to be part of it moving forward,” she said. Ryan, McCarthy and Goodlatte are among an expanding group of Republican lawmakers who have said they are open to debating further restrictions on bump stocks. The growing willingness to address the issue within the GOP stands in contrast to the party’s usual opposition to measures to restrict firearm use and access, and it could help lawmakers combat the perception that Congress has done nothing to address mass shootings. It does not hurt that these

Bills being proposed In Congress, support for a bumpstock ban is starting to coalesce around several bills. One by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., would ban the sale, transfer and manufacture of bump stocks, trigger cranks and other accessories that can accelerate a semiautomatic rifle’s rate of fire. A bill from Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., would focus on bump stocks and leave out restrictions on other gun accessories. (TWP)

particular restrictions might not garner as much resistance from the NRA as other gun control proposals. The group exerts considerable influence on the GOP’s approach to gun policy,

and many Republicans fear that opposing it could lead the group to retaliate in future primary elections. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., so far, has not indicated that he is on board. He told reporters Tuesday that it is “completely inappropriate to politicize an event like this” and declined to answer further questions on the subject. Asked Thursday about McConnell’s position, a spokesman referred to the leader’s earlier comments. Democrats in the Senate are also planning to introduce additional gun control legislation, though it seems unlikely to move in the Republican-controlled chamber. LAS VEGAS SHOOTING

Gunman may have scouted other concerts

Investigators are looking into whether gunman Stephen Paddock scoped out bigger music festivals in Las Vegas and Chicago — and perhaps Boston’s Fenway Park — before setting up his perch in a casino hotel and raining deadly fire on country music fans. Paddock booked rooms overlooking the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, left, in August and the Life Is Beautiful show near the Vegas Strip in late September, according to authorities. (AP)

U.N. chief: Over 8,000 children killed and hurt in conflicts last year, 3,512 in Afghanistan alone

LAS VEGAS Authorities trying to piece together the final days before Stephen Paddock unleashed his arsenal of firearms on the Las Vegas Strip have at least one potential trove of information: his gambling habits. Nevada gambling regulators are sorting through documents, including transaction or currency reports and player rewards cards. Paddock’s brother has described the gunman as a highstakes video poker player who was routinely comped rooms, meals and drinks at casinos. A person who has seen Mandalay Bay hotel records said they show Paddock was given his room on the 32nd floor for free because he was a good customer who wagered tens of thousands of dollars each time he visited. Michael Shackleford, who runs a gambling strategy website, said Paddock seems to have been a “premium mass” player — one who bets in higher amounts, with a better understanding of the game than the typical player. Premium mass players pay attention to the odds in the game and the payout, and they need access to a lot of money because they may have long dry spells where they lose. Eventually, their luck turns, based on statistics. When you add in freebies, the player can come out ahead. “I think the shooter was one of these people who was basically milking the system,” Shackleford said. ‘Slaves’ in supply chain

Trump plans to ‘decertify’ Iran nuke deal

requests for comment said forced labor and potential support for North Korea’s weapons program were unacceptable in their supply chains. Many said they were going to investigate, and some said they had already cut off ties with suppliers. John Connelly, president of the National Fisheries Institute, the largest seafood trade association in the U.S., said his group was urging all of its companies to immediately re-examine their supply chains. “While we understand that hiring North Korean workers may be legal in China,” said Connelly, “we are deeply concerned that any seafood companies could be inadvertently propping up the despotic regime.” Senate leaders said Wednesday that the U.S. needs to keep products made by North Koreans out of the United States and get China to refuse to hire North Korean workers. TIM SULLIVAN, HYUNG-JIN

NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump plans to announce next week that he will “decertify” the international nuclear deal with Iran, saying it is not in the national interest of the United States and kicking the issue to Congress, people briefed on the matter said Thursday. The move would mark the first step in a process that could eventually result in the resumption of U.S. sanctions against Iran, which would blow up a deal limiting Iran’s nuclear activities that the country reached in 2015 with the U.S. and five other nations. Trump is expected to deliver a speech, tentatively scheduled for Oct. 12, laying out a larger strategy for confronting the nation he blames for terrorism and instability in the Middle East. Under what is described as a tougher and more comprehensive approach, Trump would open the door to modifying the landmark 2015 agreement he has repeatedly bashed as a raw deal for the U.S. But for now, he would hold off on recommending that Congress reimpose sanctions on Iran that would abrogate the agreement, the people said. All cautioned that plans are not fully set. The White House would not confirm plans for a speech or its contents. Trump faces an Oct. 15 deadline to report to Congress on whether Iran is complying with the deal and whether he judges it to be in the nation’s interest. ANNE

This means Americans buying salmon for dinner at Walmart or ALDI may inadvertently have subsidized the North Korean government as it builds its nuclear weapons program, an AP investigation has found. Their purchases may also have supported what the United States calls “modern-day slavery” — even if the jobs are highly coveted by North Koreans. North Korea sends tens of thousands of workers worldwide, bringing in revenue estimated at anywhere from $200 million to $500 million a year. That could account for a sizable portion of North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile programs. While the presence of North Korean workers overseas has been documented, the AP investigation reveals for the first time that some products they make go to the United States, which is now a federal crime. In an effort to boost the local economy, China and North Korea agreed several years ago to allow factories to contract for groups of North Korean workers, establishing an industrial zone with bargain-priced labor. Since then,

North Korean workers at a seafood processing plant in Hunchun, China, are distinguished by their blue overalls.

dozens of fish processing companies have opened in Hunchun, along with other manufacturers. Roughly 3,000 North Koreans are believed to work in Hunchun, a far-northeast Chinese industrial hub. The vast majority of the workers in Hunchun are women in their 20s. Using North Korean workers is legal in China, and not considered forced labor. North Korean laborers are “more stable” than Chinese workers, said Li Shasha, a sales manager at Yanbian Shenghai Industry and Trade Co., a major Hunchun seafood processor. Li said that at her factory, the North Koreans’ salary is the same as for the Chinese, roughly $300 to $385 per month. The North Korean government of Kim Jong Un keeps anywhere from half to 70 percent of their pay, according to scholars who have surveyed former laborers. It passes on to the workers as little as $90 per month — or roughly 46 cents per hour.

Coveted positions Even though contracts typically last two to three years, and workers take off only one day per week, jobs in China are still sought by North Koreans. The workers’ monthly earnings in China are far more than many would earn in their own country, where official salaries often equal $1 per month. The laborers can use their earnings to start businesses in these markets, and can buy foreign-made rice cookers, watches, TVs and tableware, which they can sell back home or use as bribes. Going abroad is so rare that returning workers can find themselves sought for marriage. (AP)

Study: Tech-heavy cars pose a driving hazard

BAD KITTIES

Australian cats kill more than 1M birds a day

TECHNOLOGY The infotainment technology that automakers are cramming into the dashboard of new vehicles is making drivers take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel for dangerously long periods of time, an AAA study says. The study, released Thursday, is the latest by University of Utah professor David Strayer, who has been examining infotainment systems and safety for AAA’s Foundation for Traffic Safety since 2013. Past studies also identified problems, but Strayer said the “explosion of technology” has made things worse. Automakers now include more options to allow drivers to use social media, email and text. The technology is also becoming more complicated to use. Cars used to have a few buttons and knobs. Some vehicles now have as many as 50 buttons on the steering wheel and dashboard that are multi-functional. There are touch screens, voice commands and 3-D computer-generated images. “It’s adding more and more layers of complexity and information at drivers’ fingertips without often considering whether it’s a good idea to put it at their fingertips,” Strayer said.

Infotainment systems keep drivers’ eyes off the road, AAA finds

A study by AAA found that technology in newer car models is leading drivers to spend dangerously long periods with their eyes off the road.

The auto industry says the systems are better alternatives for drivers than phones and navigation devices that were not designed to be used while driving. The vehicle-integrated systems “are designed to be used in the driving environment and require driver attention that is comparable to tuning the radio or adjusting climate controls, which have always been considered baseline acceptable behaviors while driving,” said Wade Newton, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. The report said drivers testing 30 of the 2017 model year cars took their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel while using

infotainment systems. Researchers rated 23 of the 30 vehicles “very high” or “high” in terms of the attention they demanded from drivers. Seven were rated “moderate.” None required a low amount of attention to use. Programming a destination into in-vehicle GPS systems was the most distracting activity, taking drivers an average of 40 seconds to complete the task. AAA said drivers should use infotainment technologies “only for legitimate emergencies or urgent, driving-related purposes.” It also urged automakers to block the ability to program navigation systems or send texts while driving. A new study published this week in the journal Biological Conservation found that feral and domestic cats in Australia kill more than 1 million birds a day, driving some birds to the brink of extinction, Newsweek reports. Wild cats kill 316 million birds a year, while pets kill 61 million annually, the research says. The cat attacks target more than 338 bird species, which is nearly half of Australia’s native species. Seventyone of them are on the endangered-species list. The study is the first to look at the impact of cats on Australia’s winged populations. (EXPRESS)

The number of petitions to list species as endangered or threatened that the federal Fish and Wildlife Service declined Thursday. The creatures included the high-profile Pacific walrus, which is contending with severe climate change trends in the Arctic, where it spends much of its life atop floes of sea ice. The agency also declined a listing petition for the Florida Keys mole skink, a subspecies of lizard that lives on beaches and in coastal forests that face rising seas and were just swept by Hurricane Irma. Environmentalists believe the petitions are being rejected too cavalierly. (THE WASHINGTON POST) Anti-abortion Rep. Ishiguro wins Nobel Prize in literature STOCKHOLM Kazuo Ishiguro, the Japaneseborn British writer who in “The Remains of the Day,” “Never Let Me Go” and other novels captured in precise prose the lasting pain and dangerous illusions of memory, won the Nobel Prize in literature on Thursday. The selection of Ishiguro, 62, marked a return to citing fiction writers following two years of unconventional choices by the Swedish academy for the $1.1 million prize, including awarding it to Bob Dylan last year. It also continues a recent trend of giving the award to British authors born elsewhere — V.S. Naipaul, the 2001 winner, is from Trinidad and Tobago; and the 2007 honoree, Doris Lessing, was born in Iran and grew up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Ishiguro already was one of Britain’s most celebrated writers, winning the Booker for “The Remains of the Day.” The academy called his eight books works of emotional force that uncover “the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world.” “Some of the themes that I have tried to tackle in my work — about history, about not just personal memory but the way countries and nations and communities remember their past ... — I hope that these kinds of themes will actually be in some small way helpful to the climate we have at the moment,” Ishiguro said Thursday in London. stage for tax overhaul

POLITICS The House on Thursday passed a $4.1 trillion budget plan that promises deep cuts to social programs while paving the way for a GOP drive to rewrite the tax code later this year. The 2018 House GOP budget reprises a controversial plan to turn Medicare into a voucherlike program for future retirees as well as the party’s efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Republicans controlling Congress have no plans to actually implement those cuts while they pursue their tax overhaul. That’s especially so in the Senate, where the Budget Committee on Thursday debated a plan that would permit $1.5 trillion in debtfinanced tax cuts that contribute to annual deficits that never drop below $400 billion over the life of the plan. Instead, the nonbinding budget’s chief purpose is to set the stage for a tax overhaul plan that is the party’s top political priority as well as a longtime

policy dream of key leaders like Speaker Paul Ryan. The plan, passed by a near party-line vote of 219-206, calls for more than $5 trillion in spending cuts over the coming decade, promising to slash Medicaid by about $1 trillion over the next 10 years, cutting other health care costs, and forcing huge cuts to domestic programs funded in future years by Congress. “It’s a budget that will help grow our economy, and it’s a budget that will help rein in our debt,” said Ryan, R-Wis. “It reforms Medicaid. It strengthens Medicare.” ANDREW TAYLOR (AP)

Sessions revives strategy to cut gun and gang crimes

The Justice Department late Wednesday asked a U.S. District Court judge to dismiss a lawsuit challenging President Trump’s move to curtail military service by transgender people. The lawsuit was filed in August by two advocacy groups. Trump tweeted in July that transgender individuals will not be allowed to serve in the military, reversing a 2016 policy change that allowed transgender people to serve openly. (AP)

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Thursday he is reviving a Bush era crime-fighting strategy that emphasizes aggressive prosecution of gun and gang crimes. Similar efforts fizzled in recent years, but Justice Department officials said they will benefit from lessons learned since Project Safe Neighborhoods was launched in 2001. Part of the program’s focus is on sending certain gun crimes to federal court, where they carry longer sentences. (AP)

Spain’s Constitutional Court on Thursday ordered Catalonia’s parliament to suspend a planned session next week during which separatist lawmakers wanted to declare independence — further fueling Spain’s worst political crisis in decades. Catalan regional authorities previously have ignored Constitutional Court orders. The court said its order could be appealed but also warned Catalan parliament speaker Carme Forcadell and other members of the speakers’ board that they could face prosecution for failing to halt the session. Forcadell called the suspension a “violation of freedom of speech.” (AP)

Three U.S. Army special operations commandos and one “partner nation” member were killed in an attack in Niger’s southwest while the U.S. was providing assistance to security force counter-terror operations, U.S. Africa Command said Thursday. Two other U.S. service members were wounded in Wednesday’s attack near the country’s border with Mali. Niger’s President Mahamadou Issoufou said several Niger soldiers died in the attack, which he said was carried out by Mali-based Islamic extremists. Islamic extremist groups, including al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, operate in the region. (AP)

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced Thursday that Iraqi forces have driven the Islamic State group from one of its last strongholds in the country, the northern town of Hawija. The victory came as Baghdad and Iraq’s Kurdish region remain in a political deadlock following a controversial Kurdish independence referendum. But on the battlefield, Iraqi and Kurdish forces continue to collaborate, squeezing the jihadis who once controlled nearly a third of the country. “I want to announce the liberation of the city of Hawija today,” al-Abadi said, calling it a “victory not just for Iraq but for the whole world.” (AP)

Playoffs look possible

A quarter of the NFL season has passed, and teams’ identities are starting to take shape. This week’s games offer another chance to study which clubs are pretenders and which are contenders. (EXPRESS)

The Redskins enter their bye week looking more like a patched-up Revolutionary War band than a football team.

There haven’t been this many cracked ribs since Rocky trained in the meat locker. Washington’s 2-2 start could have been 4-0 with a few breaks. Beating Oakland and nearly upsetting Kansas City has football fans nationwide suddenly taking notice of a team that was a popular preseason pick to finish last in the NFC East. The first quarter of the season might forecast a bullish year ahead if the Redskins can say healthy. Here are five things we’ve learned.

Can Dallas get right?

QB earns his keep

Running nowhere

Swearinger for MVP

Deeply disappointing

Contenders after all

For his $24 million price tag, Kirk Cousins should produce like a superstar. He’s thrown for 1,004 yards, seven touchdowns and just one interception with a 107.6 passer rating. Washington has been surprisingly committed to the run, and Cousins is still building chemistry with Terrelle Pryor Sr. and Josh Doctson. With a late win over the Rams, a blowout of Oakland and a near-upset at Kansas City, Cousins has improved every week. If he can complete deep passes and clean up a few mental and mechanical issues, Cousins could force the Redskins to finally pony up for a longterm deal in the spring.

The Redskins ran the ball on more plays than they passed in three straight games for the first time in coach Jay Gruden’s four seasons. Washington is averaging 4.5 yards per carry, but that’s inflated by Chris Thompson’s 7.1-yard average on 20 carries. Robert Kelley has been limited by injuries. Rookie Samaje Perine leads the team in carries (46) but averages a plodding 3.1 yards a pop. Perine hasn’t moved the pile, and the running game looks useless in the red zone. Still, Gruden has decided that ball control, clock management and balance will be hallmarks of his offense this year.

So many players have overachieved on defense. Outside linebacker Preston Smith has awakened, and nickel back Kendall Fuller has emerged. But new safety D.J. Swearinger has made the biggest impact. Swearinger’s mauling of Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch put his big-hitting style on display. That’s inspired corner Bashaud Breeland to raise his play and stop committing senseless penalties. Swearinger earned instant credibility to back up his constant trash talk. Cornerback Josh Norman likes to tell teammates they are lions. Swearinger tells them it’s time to eat.

Terrelle Pryor Sr. and Josh Doctson were billed as deep threats who would also improve the red zone attack. But each has only one TD catch. Pryor has caught just 13 of 24 targets. He drops way too many over the middle. Doctson has just three catches to match three injuries this season. Running back Chris Thompson leads the team in yards receiving, and wide receiver Ryan Grant has two touchdown catches. There’s nothing wrong with having options, but Pryor and Doctson need to make tough grabs. Otherwise, Grant and tight end Vernon Davis are left to do their teammates’ jobs.

Get the bandwagon out of storage. My early 6-10 prediction looks low. The Redskins have endured a rough early schedule and hung with the only undefeated team in the league in Kansas City. The road to the playoffs is rarely easy, but the Redskins simply need to stay healthy to have a chance to win nine games and maybe get a shot at winning the NFC East. Beating the Eagles on Oct. 23 to even the season series would be a big help. Jay Gruden’s play-calling has been inspired, and Greg Manusky might be the best defensive coordinator in D.C. since Gregg Williams (2004-07).

Braves exercise option to bring back manager Brian Snitker for 2018

Hosting the 3-1 Packers on Sunday (4:25, Fox) gives Dak Prescott and the 2-2 Cowboys a chance to duel with Aaron Rodgers and prove Dallas can hang with top-tier teams.

2 Are the Panthers real? Carolina (3-1) is coming off a huge win at New England, but keeping pace with the Lions (3-1) on Sunday in Detroit is a taller order than torching the Pats’ last-ranked defense.

1 Are the Raiders kaput? Oakland (2-2) will fall quickly if QB EJ Manuel struggles while Derek Carr is out. The Raiders’ defense may take over against the weak offense of the 2-2 Ravens (4:05, CBS).

COLLEGE FOOTBALL Max Bortenschlager’s path to becoming Maryland’s starting quarterback began a few weeks before National Signing Day in 2016 — when he was committed to Buffalo. A scholarship slot opened up at Maryland when blue-chip prospect Dwayne Haskins flipped his commitment to Ohio State, and Terrapins offensive coordinator Walt Bell traveled to Indianapolis to woo Bortenschlager. Maryland liked the quarterback’s temperament, which suggested that he would not fold in competition with higher-rated prospects and that he could handle being thrown into the fray as a young starter if need be. In a 31-24 win over Minnesota on Saturday, Bortenschlager was not as flashy as quarterbacks Tyrrell Pigrome or Kasim Hill, who both watched from home after suffering seasonending knee injuries within the first three weeks of the season. Bortenschlager attempted just two throws of 20 yards or more and went 18-for-28 for 154 yards with 18 yards rushing. But in replacing Hill and Pigrome, who figure to wage an intriguing quarterback battle in the years to come, Bortenschlager showed steadiness that validated Maryland’s late recruiting push.

Max Bortenschlager completed six passes to convert third downs and led a game-winning drive at Minnesota.

“That’s Max,” coach DJ Durkin said. “He’s the same guy. He’s got a quiet confidence.” He started his sophomore season as the third-stringer coming out of fall camp and was forced into his second career start after struggling in relief of Hill in a 38-10 loss to Central Florida. Bortenschlager will arrive for Saturday’s game at No. 10 Ohio State as the third Maryland QB to win a game in the first month of the season. Of all the college football programs in all the world, Michigan might be the one that needs extra money the least. According to figures obtained by MLive in 2016, the Wolverines are not only self-sustaining, but profitable. In the 2014-15 season, for example, the football team made $56.35 million for the school. It’s likely that amount will increase this season thanks to a recently signed deal for the Wolverines to star in a documentary series set to air on Amazon Prime Video in January. The Detroit Free Press, which obtained details through a Freedom of Information Act request, reported that the No. 7 Wolverines will be paid $2.25 million — including $1.5 million in access and licensing fees and an additional $750,000 for site access — by the series’ producer, the Montag Group. Why the Nats can defy history

The elephant in the room is casting a shadow over the Nationals’ playoff hopes. Players insist every year is a new beginning, but October disappointments seem to linger in Washington. This year, the Nats were the first MLB team to clinch a division title; they finished one win shy of the best record in team history; they have home-field advantage over the Cubs. But they’ve also never won a playoff series. For the optimist in all of us, here are five reasons this fall could be different. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Three under 3

No bullpen baggage

Closing window for vets

Starters in reserve

The Turner effect

Eight MLB starting pitchers posted an ERA under 3.00 this year, and Washington has three of them: Max Scherzer (2.51), Stephen Strasburg (2.52) and GIo Gonzalez (2.96). Scherzer, the perennial Cy Young candidate, gave up five runs in 12 innings while concealing a stress fracture in his pitching hand vs. the Dodgers in last year’s NLDS. He’s dealing with a tweaked hamstring but is capable of taking over a series. Scherzer is the intimidator, but Strasburg, who was named the Game 1 starter, could loom the largest. Injuries have limited him to just one playoff start, a loss to the 2014 Giants in which he allowed one earned run. The Nats have won nine of Strasburg’s last 10 starts, during which he had a 0.86 ERA.

Entering the season, all critics had to do to pillory the Nats’ potential was point to the bullpen. In the first half of the season, Washington was tied for the sixth-most blown saves (14) in baseball. But GM Mike Rizzo worked his magic again, swinging trades for three impact relievers. Ryan Madson — who’s won two World Series and has appeared in 42 playoff games — Sean Doolittle and Brandon Kintzler appear poised to change the bullpen’s October reputation. With those three in the fold, the Nats had an MLB-low three blown saves in the second half of the season. According to FanGraphs, after the All-Star break the Nationals tied the Rockies for the best bullpen WAR (3.4) in the big leagues.

When Jayson Werth arrived in 2011, he promised to establish a winning culture, and that’s what he did. The Nats went 80-81 in his first year with the club. In the ensuing six seasons, the team won 57 percent of its games and captured four division titles. Werth, 38, is in the final year of his contract and isn’t assured a place on next year’s roster. Winning a division series — let alone the World Series — is the last thing he has to achieve here. Speaking of franchise cornerstones, what are the chances Washington will get another season like this from Ryan Zimmerman? The first draft pick in Nationals history finished the regular season ranked in the top 13 in the NL in batting average (.303), home runs (36) and RBIs (108).

The Nats signed veteran Adam Lind in February to beef up the bench, but what he delivered turned out to be exceptional. Lind appeared in 116 games with 30 starts at first and another 25 as a makeshift left fielder. He clobbered four pinch-hit homers, tied for the MLB lead in that category and more than any Nationals player had hit in a career, let alone a season. In late July, the Nationals acquired experienced utility man Howie Kendrick, who has logged at-bats in 30 postseason games. Kendrick has hit .293 in 52 games with Washington. Infielder Wilmer Difo, who also played some emergency innings in the outfield, hit .343 over July and August, when Trea Turner missed time with a broken wrist.

In June, Trea Turner’s speed on the bases cost Cubs catcher Miguel Montero a job. Turner had four of Washington’s seven steals against Chicago, Montero mouthed off about how the steals were pitcher Jake Arrieta’s fault, and the Cubs designated Montero for assignment the next day. That’s just one illustration of how Turner causes problems. In his last 30 games, Turner hit .297 with an .897 OPS. He finished the regular season with 46 stolen bases, third in the majors, despite playing in just 98 games. This year the Nats had the second-best average in the bigs with runners in scoring position (.290). Turner’s speed increases scoring chances, and a deep lineup can cash in when he starts rallies.

… And why more playoff failure is possible Harper’s recovery time

Scherzer’s hamstring

Psychology

Bryce Harper squeezed in five games upon his return from knee and calf injuries, and went 3-for18 while searching for the swing that made him an MVP candidate before he slipped on a wet base. Harper was reportedly nagged by injuries last year and hit .235 with only one RBI in five NLDS games against the Dodgers.

Speaking of injured superstars, only Max Scherzer knows how impaired his tweaked hamstring is. Scherzer pitched through a stress fracture in his knuckle last year against the Dodgers. He gave up four runs — and two homers — to take a Game 1 loss. All signs Thursday pointed to the ace starting Game 3 in Chicago.

Washington’s sports teams have reminded us many times that this city can’t have nice things. Players like Sammy Solis, who gave up a go-ahead run in Game 5 of the NLDS last year, will be thinking about that. The Cubs ended a 108-year title drought last year. They’re hot, too, with an MLBbest 423 runs in the second half.

‘You just take your shots’ in October

How the Cubs and Nationals will match up Lineup The top of Chicago’s order is scary with 2016 NL MVP Kris Bryant (.295, 29 HRs) and first baseman Anthony Rizzo (32 HRs, 109 RBIs). But Washington has stars to match and overwhelming depth. You could see Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon — who both reached 100 RBIs this year — hitting as low as fifth or sixth. Playoff games are more stressful, more fun for Werth and experienced group of Nats

has been to the World Series as a player and manager. Werth, 38, can hardly remember any of the 58 playoff games he’s played — just that they’re the most fun games he’s ever played, and he feels an increasing sense of calm with each passing round. As the Nationals lost in the division series three times in five seasons, some wondered if their confidence had been undermined. To a man, they’ll deny it. One year, they say, is too different from the next. “I get tired of hearing about losing,” said Baker, who has never won a title in two decades of managing. “I don’t think losing. I think winning.” Exactly what impact experience has — and in the case of so many Nationals players, negative experience — seems to depend on whom you talk to. Sean Doolittle allowed the tying run in the 2014 AL wild-card game between the Oakland A’s and Kansas City, the game that started the Royals’ run to two straight World Series. While he bounced back from that 2014 loss with three strong regular seasons, he has not pitched in the postseason since. “That’s an example of a game, a postseason loss you can grow from,” he said. “Having lost and failed on that stage in the playoffs, then coming back from it, you can learn a lot about yourself. How tough you might be or might not be.”

MLB PLAYOFFS Nine hats hang on the wall of the gym in Jayson Werth’s home, one for each of the division titles the outfielder has won in his 15-year career. They’re the hats players get on the field after they clinch. For Werth, they serve as reminders of goals achieved and of dreams left unfulfilled. For all of those division champion hats, he has only one that says “World Series Champions.” No Nationals player has logged more playoff games than Werth, and few acquire playoff experience without playoff heartbreak. “Do you learn anything from it? I don’t know. You learn you don’t like it,” Werth said. “Does it motivate you to work harder or something like that? Not really. We’re all pretty hard workers. That’s how we got here.” Some baseball people would disagree. They would say losing teaches, motivates or is even a prerequisite to winning. If so, these Nationals should be as well-taught, well-motivated and ready to win as anybody. This Nationals team has more playoff experience than any before it. Werth, Daniel Murphy, Max Scherzer, Joe Blanton and Ryan Madson — potentially a fifth of their postseason roster, if Blanton makes it — have played in the World Series. Those five, plus Howie Kendrick and Oliver Perez, have played in league championship series. Their manager, Dusty Baker,

PLAYOFF GAMES

The combined number of playoff games Nationals players have logged, the most postseason experience the team has ever had. The Nationals have combined for 223⅔ innings pitched and 717 plate appearances in the playoffs. C.J.

Any conversations around the Nationals’ collective playoff psyche eddy around the bullpen, which collapsed in 2012 and 2014. But no one that was a part of those bullpens will be a part of this year’s. The institutional

memory is gone, replaced with some recollection of early-season struggles and some pitchers — like Brandon Kintzler — who have no playoff memory at all. Werth, a 2008 champion with the Phillies, said experience has taught him that World Series titles are hard to come by — and that the playoffs themselves are moments to be treasured, however they end. “While there’s tons of stress, at the same times, they’re really fun,” Werth said. “You just take your shots. You take your swings. ... You look back over the course of your career, and those [playoff seasons] are benchmarks. Those are things you can hang your hats on.” CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Seven of nine experts at Sports Illustrated pick Nats to beat Cubs

Stephen Strasburg has been lights out. Chicago’s Jake Arrieta (14-10, 3.53 ERA) has a hamstring injury, just like Max Scherzer. Gio Gonzalez had his best season in five years but gave up nine runs in his past two starts. Jon Lester’s ERA is 1.89 higher than in 2016. Advantage: Nationals

Bullpen The Cubs came alive after the All-Star break, but their bullpen didn’t. Chicago relievers pitched to a 4.48 ERA in the second half. But they did strike out 10.25 batters per nine innings in that time, second-most in the NL. Advantage: Nationals

Manager Both dugouts feature cool, eccentric skippers who have won manager of the year three times each. Dusty Baker has been to one World Series. Joe Maddon has been to two and has a win. Advantage: Cubs

Unique Small Pets Not a cat or dog lover? Check out our picks for alternative pets.

THE FURRY Hamster Looking for a pet handheld and cute overload-worthy? Hamsters can be a good alternative to cats or kittens. These little animals are usually indoor pets and are kept in cages. Items that you can put in a hamster cage include: a wheel, water bowl or feeder, scatter-fed food, tunnels, and other items of your choosing. Lifespan: 2-3 years Cost: $15-$20

level maintenance and still offer that cuddly appearance that cats and dogs do. Rabbits are commonly kept in a cage or rabbit house, indoors or outdoors. Invest in a pet playpen, which can be easily stowed away, if you want to let yours out and about for some daily exercise. They love to chew, so proper training and rabbitproofing is required if you wish to forego the playpen. Lifespan: 9-12 years Cost: $5 and up

Ferret

Another small pet that has been popular for the last few years is the hedgehog. Hedgehogs are to be kept in a child-safe box or cage. Hedgehogs are gentle and very easily frightened animals that need to be handled like a porcelain doll. Lifespan: 2-5 years Cost: $70-$250

Another furry pet that isn’t a cat or dog to add to the list would be a ferret. These animals are commonly kept indoors in a cage, but are usually occasionally allowed to run around a living space with supervision. Ferrets offer the friendliness that cats and dogs offer, just in a smaller package. Lifespan: 6-10 years Cost: $65-$250 (without vaccinations)

Rabbit

Mouse

These furry animals are medium-

Want to go even smaller? A mouse

Hedgehog

still has hair but is about the size of a golf ball. Mice are usually kept in a cage, and are more of a short-term pet due to their short lifespan. Get more than one if you want to watch them play and interact with each other. Mice can be bought at a local pet store, or you can also check your local shelter to see if any are available for adoption. Lifespan: 1-3 years Cost: $1- ?

Chinchilla A furry friend that is unique in every way, a Chinchilla is considered an exotic pet. Chinchillas are native to South America. Lifespan: 10 years Cost: up to $150

THE SCALY & SLIMY Frog Don’t want to deal with fur at all? A frog may be the pet for you. Pet frogs are usually kept in a terrarium, which the owner can

decorate with different plants, rocks, realistic backgrounds, etc. Lifespan: 6-16 years Cost: $10-$90

Bearded Dragon A Bearded Dragon is a type of reptile that can be kept in several different types of cages. Factors that come into setting up a Bearded Dragon habitat involve tank size, humidity, lighting, temperature, and other factors. Lifespan: 5-8 years Cost: $30-$100

Fish Are you good with keeping plants alive? If you are, fish might be the right pet for you. Taking care of fish can be very tedious when it comes to keeping them alive. Most fish are often kept in a fish tank with a certain type of water (some have chemicals that are good for the fish, others have chlorine or salt). Fish tanks can be decorated to look like an aqua environment with different live plants, colorful rocks,

and other various items. Fish can be bought at Petsmart and other local pet stores. Lifespan: 1-10 years Cost: 10¢ and up

Hermit Crabs Hermit crabs are kept as indoor pets in a glass or plastic terrarium. There are various factors when it comes down to making the perfect habitat for a hermit crab, such as having a dome light, fluorescent strip light, sand, thermometers, hygrometer, food and water dishes (fresh or salt), and more. These animals are available at local pet stores and beach shops. Lifespan: up to 30 years Cost: $2-$45 Before you commit to giving any one of these amazing pets a home, make sure you check with your property management that the type of animal you want is approved at your community. n By Victoria Naranjo for Apartment Showcase

‘The King’s Choice’

Ryan Gosling is just one of the many marvelous visuals in “Blade Runner 2049.”

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Much to see here: ‘Blade Runner’ is as good as it gets After nearly 15 years together, it’s entirely possible there’s nothing I could do that would surprise my husband. Then I said I was worried about seeing “Blade Runner 2049” because I’d never seen the first one. He surprised me with how fast he could use Amazon Prime to stream it. I’m not sure why I hadn’t. It was just one of those things I always meant to get around to, like putting together the baby book (the baby is now 9) or rolling over my 401(k) from four jobs ago. So we watched 1982’s “Blade Runner” (not “The Final Cut” version, which I will do right after that 401(k) thing). And,

yes, I did think it was quite good and yes, it did help me understand “Blade Runner 2049” better. Not necessarily from a plot perspective — “2049” gets you up to speed within the first two minutes — but because it emphasized just how incredible “Blade Runner 2049” is. Seriously: There is nothing bad about this movie. “Blade Runner 2049” is as close to perfect as a film has been in recent memory. Director Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”) has created an immersive world that just keeps getting better — you barely recover from gasping at the last visual when he hits you with another one. It builds on the aesthetic of the first one, a neon film noir, where the sidewalks are slicked with ashes rather than

glistening with rain, and glaring digital billboards replace street lamps. The sequel (with a screenplay by Hampton Fancher, one of the “Blade Runner” screenwriters, and Michael Green, who co-wrote “Logan”) continues the story of the original. There are replicants, which are kinda robots developed to serve humanity. Some of them decided that “serve humanity” wasn’t what they wanted to do anymore, so they’re hunted and “retired” by kinda cops called (wait for it) blade runners. Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard was the central blade runner in the first film; here, Ryan Gosling’s character is

‘Blade Runner 2049’ (R, 160 min.) DIRECTOR: Denis Villeneuve STARS: Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Jared Leto IN A NUTSHELL: A new blade runner discovers a secret that could bring down humanity, so he embarks on a quest to find an old blade runner to help (i.e., characters played Ford and Gosling team up to save the world).

Nicole Kidman to star in L.A. crime thriller “Destroyer” from director Karyn Kusama (“The Invitation”)

our entry to the story. Beyond that, the film further considers the questions of identity, community, duty and reality that were at the core of the first. “Blade Runner 2049” isn’t just a sequel — it’s an in-depth commentary on what made “Blade Runner” revolutionary and what keeps it relevant. It’s always a little nervewracking writing a rave, because if others disagree, the film you’re celebrating becomes evidence of your bad taste. It’s often safer to be snarky, because even if the movie is a critical or commercial hit, you can shrug and say, “It just wasn’t for me, I guess.” But when it comes to “Blade Runner 2049,” I’m laying it all on the line — this is an achingly beautiful, incredibly acted, intricately crafted piece of art that excels on all levels of moviemaking. If you haven’t seen the first one, admit it and rectify the situation. It will give you a place to stand on and a lens to see through when it comes to watching this modern masterpiece. ALCON ENTERTAINMENT

Unrated, 133 min.

“The King’s Choice” looks at the first few days after Germany invaded Norway in April 1940, pulling the previously neutral country into World War II. The film’s title refers to a decision — resist or surrender — that falls on the nation’s king. Though the performances in this Norwegian drama are fine and nuanced, the stakes here seem, for some reason, more theoretical than actual. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Lucky’ Unrated, 88 min.

“Lucky” is, on the surface, the story of a lonely old man and the uneventful life he leads. That tale is made more meaningful with Harry Dean Stanton, the prolific character actor who died last month at 91, in the lead role. But the movie also sneaks up on you. What starts out trivial turns into a drama about big ideas: mortality, the meaning of life and the value of relationships. STEPHANIE MERRY (TWP)

This winter is burning up Kate Winslet, Idris Elba create plenty of sparks in this survival saga Q&A

‘Mark Felt’ is a D.C. spy story like no other

TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

FILM REVIEW As far as snowflakes go, few are more special than the ones that alight with pristine delicacy on Idris Elba’s eyebrows in “The Mountain Between Us.” Those snowflakes know what’s up in a movie that starts out as a grueling man-against-nature survival tale and winds up evoking all the ersatz hardship of an L.L. Bean catalogue. Once the penny drops — once all the convenient obstacles and equally timely windfalls start popping up with the reassuring regularity of a metronome — viewers can settle in for what “The Mountain Between Us” is really about, which is the delicious, slow-burn attraction between two of the most beautiful and charismatic stars on the planet. That would be Elba, of course, and Kate Winslet, here playing travelers trying to get to Denver from Boise in time to beat an oncoming snowstorm. Ben (Elba), a handsome doctor, needs to get to Baltimore in time to perform a lifesaving operation. Alex (Winslet), a freewheeling photojournalist, simply must get to her own wedding. When commercial flights are canceled, the two strangers book a private plane, piloted by an avuncular veteran with a penchant for gallows humor. “As long as nobody’s shootin’ at me, I’ll get you there,” he says jovially.

Can’t you just feel the romantic subtext in Kate Winslet and Idris Elba’s seemingly platonic hand grasp?

Ha-ha. It spoils nothing to say that “The Mountain Between Us” doesn’t involve a short hop to the Mile-High City. It does involve one of the most viscerally upsetting filmed plane crashes in recent memory, given added terror by the fact that the pilot has brought along his stouthearted yellow Lab. At times, “The Mountain Between Us” recalls such arduous wilderness adventures as “Into the Wild,” “The Grey” and “The Revenant.” But, in this adaptation of Charles Martin’s novel, the sobering physical peril of two lonely people stranded on a snowy mountain peak gradually gives way to the sheer tantalizing potential of two lonely people stranded on a snowy

‘The Mountain Between Us’ (PG-13, 112 min.) DIRECTOR: Hany Abu-Assad STARS: Idris Elba, Kate Winslet, Beau Bridges IN A NUTSHELL: After their private plane crashes during a blistering blizzard, two strangers suffer — and smolder — as they fight to survive.

mountain peak, with Elba and Winslet smoothly calibrating their performances to suit both narratives. Helped by director Hany Abu-Assad and spectacular cinematography by Mandy Walker, who makes the most of the film’s British Columbia locations, Elba and Winslet generate

chemistry that is convincing in direct proportion to the story’s outlandishness. Amid the endless coincidences and contrivances, these actors never lead the audience to doubt that their characters are for real, whether they’re arguing about tactics or creating sparks in other ways. There are moments in ‘The Mountain Between Us” when inveterate fans of “Titanic” might feel compelled to remind Dr. Ben of what happened the last time Winslet starred in a tale of sexual passion and survival. The good news is the setting and scope of this story are expansive enough for not just one but two people to be carried to their romantic destiny. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

STREAMING

Netflix is raising subscription prices

Netflix is raising streaming plan prices, a strategic move to compete with HBO, Amazon and other rivals. The platform will now charge $11 per month instead of $10 for a plan that includes high definition and allows for two simultaneously streaming devices. The price of the ultra-high definition plan will go up from $12 to $14. Netflix will start notifying subscribers Oct. 19, giving them 30 days to accept the rates, switch their plan or cancel. (AP)

Radiohead, Nina Simone, The Moody Blues among new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees

The Mark Felt (Liam Neeson) of “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House” is better known as “Deep Throat.” His leaking of FBI secrets led to Richard Nixon’s resignation. Here, director Peter Landesman discusses his new film about Watergate. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

How is this different from so many other spy stories? The idea that he runs the organization whose job it is to find out who’s leaking — and it’s him. Imagine a bank robber that’s the chief of police. Why does he leak to the press? He’s faced with the unthinkable option of betraying the FBI in order to allow the FBI to do its job, which is just to finish the police investigation. He knows it’s leading to the Oval Office; that’s neither his problem, nor his agenda. All he wants is to finish the job. And he paid a high price for it. He betrayed everybody and everything in order to do his job. His wife committed suicide, and he knew that part of her anguish was the disgrace in which he was forced to resign. That disgrace all came from his betrayal of the FBI to allow the FBI to do its job. It’s an enormous act of heroism and tragedy all at once.

The week’s best movie previews

‘Wonder Wheel’

‘Paddington 2’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Dec. 1

EXPECTED RELEASE: Jan. 12

SUMMARY: Justin Timberlake is the Woody Allenesque narrator in Allen’s latest, set in 1950s Coney Island. Juno Temple plays a woman on the run from her mobster husband. This will lead to intrigue, action and 1,000 essays on whether women should ever work with Woody Allen. Kate Winslet and Jim Belushi also star. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: The very proper British bear has settled into his new home and he’s job-hunting; he wants to buy a pop-up book of London to send to his Aunt Lucy for her birthday. You’re all set to make fun of the movie until you find yourself actually laughing out loud, especially at the bit where Paddington cleans a sliding glass door with his bum. K.P.K.

Trendy names like Aiden, Grayson and Riley filled the list, which was promptly roasted on Twitter. “Half of these storms got into Harvard on legacy admissions,” @AdamSerwer tweeted. The Weather Channel has been coming up with an annual list of winter storm names since 2012, but they are not recognized by the National Weather Service. “Instead of putting salt on the driveway and sidewalks I’m gonna use gluten,” @LaporteReporte tweeted.

On Wednesday, the Panthers quarterback told female sports reporter Jourdan Rodrigue that “it’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.’’ Then, people on Twitter uncovered old tweets from Rodrigue with racist overtones. Both people were criticized, and Rodrigue apologized.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
