Obama Blasts GOP on Jobs Bill President: Be ready to act or be run out of town by voters

MWi^_d]jed A combative President Obama challenged a divided Congress on Thursday to unite behind his $447 billion jobs bill or get ready to be run “out of town” by angry voters. Hoping to use public frustration and economic worry as leverage, he called his proposal an insurance plan against a painful return to recession. In a news conference long on restatements of his ideas, Obama laid bare the dynamic that now is Washington: The era of compromise is over. Frustrated over getting nowhere with Republicans, Obama demanded that they explain themselves to the country and promised to keep “hammering way until something gets done.” Despite Obama’s taunts, Republicans showed no signs of switching positions. Instead, they pressed for a symbolic vote so they could oppose the bill the president sub-

millionaires. Speaking at a forum just about the same time as Obama, House Speaker John Boehner said the president had decided to “give up on governing, give up on leading.” Said Boehner: “We’re legislating. He’s campaigning.” Obama’s news conference marked a continuation of his recent feistiness, and his party’s pre-election-year attempt to depict Republi-

cans as protectors of the rich at the expense of the jobless. When asked about his willingness to negotiate to help the millions of unemployed, Obama said he had gone out of his way every time with Republicans, to little avail. “The question, then, is, will Congress do something?” the president said. “If Congress does something, then I can’t run against a donothing Congress. If Congress does nothing, then it’s not a matter of me running against them. I think the American people will run them out of town because they are frustrated.” BEN FELLER (AP)

American Dream Lapses Census says housing suffers worst drop since the Depression MWi^_d]jed The American dream of homeownership has felt its biggest drop since the Great Depression, according to new 2010 census figures released Thursday. The analysis by the Census Bureau found the homeownership rate fell to 65.1 percent last year — or 76 million occupied housing units that were owned by their residents. While that level remains the second-highest decennial rate, analysts say the U.S. may never return to its mid-decade housing boom peak in which nearly 70 percent of occupied households were owned by their residents. The reason: a longer-term economic reality of tighter credit, pro-

Cehj]W][ HWj[i :hef Mortgage rates are now lower than they were in the early 1950s. The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage has fallen below 4 percent for the first time in history. For the lucky few with good jobs and stable finances, it’s a rare opportunity to save potentially thousands of dollars each year. For most people, it’s a tease and a reminder of how weak their own financial situations are. The average rate on a 15-year fixed loan, a popular refinancing option, dipped to 3.26 percent, also a record. (AP)

longed job losses and reduced government involvement. Unemployed young adults are least likely to own, delaying firsttime home purchases to live with Mom and Dad. Middle-aged adults ages 35 to 64, mostly homeowners who were hit with mortgage foreclosures or bankruptcy after the housing bust in 2006, are at their lowest levels of ownership in decades. Measured by race, the homeownership gap between whites

and blacks is now at its widest since 1960, wiping out more than 40 years of gains. “The changes ... are mind-boggling: the housing market has completely crashed, and attitudes toward housing are shifting from owning to renting,” said Patrick Newport, economist with IHS Global Insight. “While 10 years ago owning a home was the American dream, I’m not sure a lot of people still think that way.” HOPE YEN (AP)

NATO: No Timeline to End Libya Mission

Withdrawal to come soon, officials say, as fighting continues 8hkii[bi

NATO leaders said Thursday that they would continue carrying out airstrikes in Libya and patrolling its coastline because of ongoing resistance from forces loyal to deposed leader Moammar Gadhafi. NATO’s political leadership said it would end military operations in Libya “soon” but emerged from two days of meetings in Bel-

gium without a clear decision on how to wind down the war. Though Gadhafi remains in hiding, some U.S. and NATO officials said it would be a mistake to withdraw from Libya as long as fighting continues in Sirte and Bani Walid, two cities still under the control of pro-Gadhafi forces. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the NATO secretary general, said the threat to civilians from Gadhafi loyalists was “fading away,” but he was vague about when NATO would end involvement in the conflict. NATO is carrying out airstrikes daily, though revolutionary forces

swept into Tripoli in August and took control of most of Libya. But the attacks have slackened: NATO reported 21 airstrikes Tuesday, half the number of two weeks ago. NATO needs a better assessment of risk for Libyan civilians

before a withdrawal, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. The U.S. led the initial airstrikes in March. The 28-member alliance operates by consensus, so all countries must endorse any decisions. CR AIG WHITLOCK (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Moammar Gadhafi called on Libyans to take to the streets and wage a campaign of civil disobedience against the country’s new leaders Thursday, the first word from the fugitive leader in about two weeks. “Be courageous, rise up, go out in the streets,” he said. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has appealed to European countries to recognize a Palestinian state, saying “there is no more appropriate time” than now. Abbas addressed the parliament of the 47-member Council of Europe on Thursday after applying two weeks ago for U.N. recognition, despite a threatened U.S. veto in the Security Council. Seventeen members of the Council of Europe have recognized the state based on 1967 borders with Israel, Abbas said. The assembly is made up of lawmakers in Europe — not to be confused with the EU’s Parliament — and focuses on human rights. In the face of U.S. support for a return to negotiations, and a tricky political calculus in the Security Council, Abbas’ appeal amounted to a pitch to hold and strengthen support among Europeans he sees as supportive. On Thursday, the Apple website, which usually features iPods and MacBooks, displayed an iconic photo — seen on the iPhone screen below — of CEO Steve Jobs, who died Wednesday.

One day after his death, two days after Apple introduced the latest incarnation of a touch-screen phone that touched pop culture, sadness and admiration poured out — not for a rock star, not for a religious figure, but for an American corporate executive. “He was a genius,” Rosario Hidalgo said outside an Apple Store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan while her daughter, 21-month-old Carlotta, used an iPhone to play with an app that teaches children to match animal sounds to animal pictures. For people who grew up in a world where iPod headphones are as ubiquitous as wristwatches were to an earlier generation, Jobs was remembered as their Elvis Presley or John Lennon. Perhaps even their Thomas Edison. “It’s like the end of the innovators,” said Scott Robbins, 34, who rushed to an Apple Store in San Francisco when he heard the news. In announcing Jobs’ death Wednesday, Apple remembered him as a “visionary and creative genius.” The company announced no cause of death, but Jobs had been diagnosed with a rare pancreatic cancer seven years ago and had a liver transplant in 2009. He was a conjurer, a modern magician who reached into tomorrow and came up with things that changed millions of lives. And as people gathered at Apple stores from Sydney to San Francisco to mourn Steve Jobs, the feeling was more than mourning for an executive or even an inventor. It was something closer to awe for a wizard. On Thursday, the admirers who turned his technological marvels into everyday tools grieved his loss through devices that before his time, or without his vision, would have been considered beyond humanity’s reach. A decade ago, the “Steve Jobs,” the Apple CEO’s only ones who carried their music around biography, will were tech geeks, music be published Oct. 24, Simon obsessives and those and Schuster willing to tote a clunky said, instead of CD player. Presto: The mid-November. iPod, and everyone wanted one. Five years ago, cell phones had hinges, and the displays looked more like the age of Atari than the age of the Internet. Texting was mostly cryptography, tapping strings of numbers to make words. Presto: The iPhone, and everyone wanted one of those, too. Two years ago, the economy had just tanked, and it was hard enough for companies to persuade people to buy the things they needed. Getting people to buy a product they didn’t need was out of the question. Most people had a desktop, or a laptop, or a smartphone. And yet, presto: the iPad. Nothing up his sleeve. Transportation experts must have various metrics to determine whether a bus route is a success. That changed Monday, when the red buses run by the District Department of Transportation debuted the first route to head east of the Anacostia River. these trips more convenient and affordable. But first, folks need to know it exists. Despite news reports and the fliers with free ride coupons that were sent to thousands of households, many people are still in the dark about t heir expanded options. On Wednesday, the driver on my ride had to pitch the service to passengers waiting for Metrobuses at their shared stops: “Are you headed down Good Hope Road? Come with me!” And there were plenty of different questions for him to answer. But once the passengers finally got on, their reactions were pretty much the same. “This is quicker and faster. Once people find out, they won’t be waiting for the 90 anymore,” said 57-yearold Clifton Hines, who estimated he’d get home before the Metrobus even arrived to pick him up. Virgo Darby, 24, enjoyed the peace and quiet of the uncrowded bus, but he suspected word would get out before too long. “And if more people see it, Metro will be out of business,” he said. Even 9-year-old Tyree Williams was an immediate convert. “It’s got better air-conditioning,” Williams declared. Avon Braxton, of Barry Farm, couldn’t heap enough praise on the bus. “It’s on time and clean, and there’s no graffiti or trash,” the 40-year-old marveled. There were two things she’d been hoping for in her neighborhood: a Starbucks (“I want to sit outside and drink my $3 coffee.”) and a Circulator route. For now, she’ll settle for the latter. And maybe with more economic opportunity for residents east of the river, that Starbucks will follow.

‘Occupy’ Fervor Comes to D.C. Protestors seek jobs, social justice at event at Freedom Plaza

C[Wdm^_b[ $$$ A protest is planned for Friday at the Ronald Reagan Building against the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline planned to stretch from Canada to Texas. (T WP)

A couple hundred social justice protesters launched an “occupation” of Freedom Plaza Thursday, the area’s first major demonstration against rising inequality since the Occupy Wall Street movement began last month in New York and spread across the country. Decrying corporate greed, ineffective political leaders and a rising gap between the haves and the have-nots in the United States, protesters unfurled sleeping bags and raised tents in the public plaza in the shadow of the White House, vowing to stay indefinitely — or until their voices are heard. “This is what needs to be done

to get our voices heard. Congress is not listening,” said Matthew Mascolino, 23, who flew in from suburban Chicago to protest. “I’ve been looking for a job for a year and there’s nothing.” Around him, demonstrators beat

drums, spread bubbles through the air and carried signs that said “Tax the Rich.” Mascolino carried a sign supporting the “99 Percent” — a slam against the top 1 percent of earners in the United States who take home

a quarter of the income. They ended up massing along H Street in Northwest in front of the heavy carved door of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, chanting “We want jobs! We want jobs!” They then unfurled a sign in front of the police guarding the entrance that said “Chamber of Corporate Horrors” and left a symbolic sheaf of job applications and resumes. Many of those in attendance said that they were attending their first-ever protest rally. ANNIE GOWEN

A Fairfax County woman accused of tossing her 2-year-old granddaughter over the edge of a 44-foothigh mall walkway was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder, and a jury recommended a sentence of 35 years in prison.

Carmela dela Rosa, 50, had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The trial continued Thursday into the penalty phase. Dela Rosa and her family were on an outing at Tysons Corner Center last November when dela Rosa suddenly picked up Angelyn Ogdoc

and threw the toddler off a bridge connecting the mall and a parking garage. Prosecutors had argued that dela Rosa was driven to kill Angelyn by an unremitting anger for the girl’s father, James Ogdoc, who had gotten dela Rosa’s daughter, Kathlyn Ogdoc, pregnant out of wedlock.

Tomas Vokoun, 35, had a .922 save percentage and a 2.55 goals-against average while playing for the Florida Panthers last season.

New Man in the Net Goalie Vokoun figures the Caps give him one final shot at the title J^[ 9Wf_jWbi Tomas Vokoun accepts that his Stanley Cup window is closing. In four seasons with the Florida Panthers, Vokoun never whiffed a scent of the playoffs despite being one of the NHL’s top goaltenders. So he packed his bags and awaited his next destination on July 1 — the start of the NHL’s free - F$C$ Saturday |CSN agency period. “I’m 35 years old. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t sign in Florida,” he said. “I’ve been watching the playoffs in the living room on my TV. I don’t want to go out [without a Stanley Cup].” He figured his .922 save percentage and 2.55 goals-against average on a team that lost 40 games in 2010-11 might entice some general managers to

ask “What if he was on a contender?” and that the offers would flow in. Instead, the Czech Republic native watched as other goalies garnered multimillion-dollar contracts, particularly Ilya Bryzgalov’s monster nineyear, $51 million deal with the Philadelphia Flyers. Two days into the free agency period, with no offer in sight, Vokoun started to doubt he would sign with an NHL team. “I was disappointed, but you realize you’re not going to get 20 offers in the goalie market,” he said. Then Vokoun ended up in the most unlikely of places, with a team that few thought would go after the veteran — the Washington Capitals. After the team’s falling out with

22-year-old goalie Semyon Varlamov ended in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche, the Capitals approached Vokoun. The offer was a meager $1.5 million, but he felt the chance to play for a Stanley Cup contender balanced that out. “It’s a good, strong team,” Vokoun said. “I haven’t had a chance to play for a team like that. That was the most important thing — to be on a team that has a chance.” Vokoun is expected to be the Caps’ starter for much of the season but is likely to split time with last season’s standout, Michal Neuvirth. After the signing, Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said Vokoun would come into training camp as the No. 1 goalie, and Vokoun’s preseason performance suggests Boudreau’s prediction should hold true. Vokoun gives the Capitals a veteran presence in net, and he could be one of the pieces in the Caps’ Stanley Cup puzzle. “We can say all we want how we have the team to do it,” Vokoun said. “But unless we do it, it means nothing.” REED S. ALBERS

For most NHL players, an 85-point campaign with 32 goals might be a career season. Then there’s Alex Ovechkin, whose 32 goals and 53 assists combined for a career low point total for the Russian superstar. He says he’s in his best physical shape, but has the league figured Ovie out?

Leaekd li$ D[k# l_hj^ li$ >ebjXo The goalie wars are about to begin. Tomas Vokoun comes to the Caps as the veteran with the stats you expect out of a No. 1, but 23-year-old Czech Michal Neuvirth hasn’t yielded the starting job just yet. And there’s a wild card: Braden Holtby, the 21-year-old who impressed in spurts last season and was set to back up Neuvirth until the arrival of Vokoun.

>em 8ekZh[Wk ^WdZb[i j^[ d[m b_d[kf After the Caps’ second-round exit in four games to the Lightning last year, the fans wanted coach Bruce Boudreau fired. GM George McPhee instead infused the roster with veteran players. If Boudreau can’t deliver with a roster many feel is the deepest the Caps have ever had, it might be the end of “Gabby” in D.C.

Winnipeg’s players will get to enjoy something most of them didn’t during have during their tenure in Atlanta — fans. Playing in front of a crowd excited to have the NHL back in their city, the Jets aren’t a team to be overlooked. With a talented roster featuring Evander Kane, Dustin Byfuglien, Zach Bogosian and Andrew Ladd, the Jets could be tough.

Another season, another disappointing playoff exit. Instead of firing head coach Bruce Boudreau after their second-round exit to the Tampa Bay Lightning, GM George McPhee took aim at his players and brought in veteran leadership and hard-nosed grinders. And a worldclass goaltender at a bargain-bin price doesn’t hurt either.

<beh_ZW FWdj^[hi LAST YEAR: 30-40-12, 72 points,

Following a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, Tampa GM Steve Yzerman didn’t so much add to the team as he did retain his talent. The Bolts re-signed star Steven Stamkos and goalie Dwayne Roloson, and brought in defensive help in Gilroy. It’s hard to imagine the Bolts won’t be neck-and-neck with the Caps.

The ’Canes missed the playoffs by two points last season, but that didn’t mean the 2010-11 season was a bust. Goalie Cam Ward remained solid, and rookie sensation Jeff Skinner finished second on the team in points behind captain Eric Staal. The addition of defenseman Kaberle means the ’Canes should be in the playoff mix.

After another season in the basement of the Southeast Division (and the NHL, for that matter), GM Dale Tallon brought in a new group of players — including three former Capitals. This summer’s signings show the team’s heading in the right direction.

Roy Halladay and Chris Carpenter grew up together with the Toronto Blue Jays, and the BFFs have spent plenty of time competing on golf courses and fishing boats. The stakes will be much higher when the All-Stars go head-tohead on a mound for the first time Friday night. It’ll be Halladay versus Carpenter in Game 5 with a berth in the NL championship series on the line for the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals. “You definitely look forward to it,” Halladay said Thursday. “Not only is Chris a good pitcher, but obviously a good friend. The best buddies already have made offseason plans for a fishing trip. One of them will get a head start on his vacation. This is a “dream matchup,” according to Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who set it up by pitching Carpenter on three days’ rest for the first time in his career in Game 2. The Phillies, heavy favorites entering the division series, are counting on the ace of their starstudded rotation to outduel his pal and put away those pesky Cardinals. ROB MA ADI (AP)

Terps Look to Fine-Tune Offense After Maryland’s third uneven performance in as many weeks, fissures have begun to appear in the locker room, stemming from frustration over coach Randy Edsall’s hard-line regime. The Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun reported an anonymous veteran player confiding that many players are chafing at Edsall’s disciplinarian approach. The Sun reported that at least one player has sought advice from former coach Ralph Friedgen. D.T.

J[hfi <eejXWbb Maryland’s hurry-up spread offense and Georgia Tech’s triple option represent radical deviations from traditional attacks. Such extreme schemes are difficult to defend but also difficult to perfect, a point made clear by the recent struggles of the Terrapins, in their first year with the offense, and the season-long domination of the Yellow Jackets, four years in. Maryland’s offense, implemented by new coach Randy Edsall and offensive coordinator Gary Crowton, is designed to run play after play after play, no huddles, blending the run and pass and leaving

little time for defensive players to catch their breath, let alone communicate. When it’s right, it’s rapid and precise. On opening night against Miami, the Terrapins ran nearly 80 offensive plays and tallied 499 yards of total offense. But against Temple, Maryland

(2-2, 1-0 ACC) ran just 60 mostly fruitless plays and scored only a single garbage-time touchdown in a 38-7 loss. Frequent three-andout drives, sometimes taking mere seconds off of the game clock, compounded the struggles of the Terrapins’ defense. Radical change, Edsall said, is not instantaneous.

“When we have everybody doing what they’re supposed to do, all 11 guys doing that, we’re productive,” he said. “It’s just a consistency factor.” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson brought the triple option from Navy in 2008. Rarely do the Yellow Jackets employ the forward pass. The offense is predictable and still terribly difficult to stop. For the Terrapins, Saturday’s game in Atlanta marks the beginning of a brutal and telling threegame stretch that also includes a home game against No. 8 Clemson and a road trip to No. 23 Florida State. “I think we’re trying to carve out who we are as a team,” sophomore quarterback Danny O’Brien said. “I don’t think we’ve answered it yet.” DEREK TURNER

Bill Bryson AUTHOR, HISTORIC HOME FAN A house is more than just four walls. It’s a window to a history everyone relates to: how domestic life has changed over the centuries. In “At Home: A Short History of Private Life” ($16, Doubleday), Bill Bryon’s 15th book, the American-turned-Brit author uses his 160-year-old abode as a backdrop to explore how evolving lifestyles have influenced the structures we call home. Bryson talks about the history of domestic bliss Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue (Sixthandi.org).

world from that perspective?”

Where did the idea for this book come from? I thought, “What if I just did a book about a house, and treated the house as a continent, making a journey around it, from room to room, considering the history of the

What surprised you most about the history of homes? How long it took us as beings to get comfortable, because it’s just the most natural thing in the world. For most of time, most people were not very good at making themselves

You live in a Victorian parsonage, which seems an ideal place to explore. The clergyman who built this house in 1851 had grown up in a world that was, for nearly a century, fundamentally medieval. He lived until the early 20th century, so he died in a world that had cars, airplanes, skyscrapers and movies. Changes in those 50 years were probably greater than has ever happened in any inkling of human history.

So as the world changes, so do houses? Most of the mechanics of living in the house haven’t changed. No matter how much lifestyles change, how much technology takes us into new places, we’re conservative about our houses. A doorknob has not changed in hundreds of years, and windows open the same way they did 250 years ago. So how are houses going to change in upcoming years? There will be change in terms of flat-screen televisions, entertainment systems and communications systems, but I imagine they will all be incorporated into a house that would be fundamentally the same as houses that we live in now. OK, you can live in the White House, Monticello or Mount Vernon — which would you take? Monticello is the greatest house ever built. The fact that it’s on a hilltop at a time when nobody built houses on hilltops, Thomas Jefferson was unique in that. What a visionary to think to have a view when you step out of French windows! But Mount Vernon is one of the most comfortable houses ever. Two of the best houses in America were built by presidents in their spare time. That’s amazing! STEPHANIE K ANOWITZ

Flower Empowered

New Shoes, Old Town

SUPERMARKET BOUQUETS, often uninspiring in both hue and variety, morph into arrangements that’d make Martha Stewart swoon with Urban Petal’s new Floral Design Toolkit ($40, Urbanpetals.com). Local posy queen Sarah von Pollaro’s DIY supplies include Japanese clippers, tape, wire and a bouquet basics tip card. D.C.-based von Pollaro’s blog also boasts videos on using fruits in arrangements, keeping blooms fresh and more.

WITH ITS DAMASK-COVERED FRENCH CHAIRS, antlers on the wall and twinkly chandeliers, Old Town Alexandria’s new Bishop’s Boutique (815-B King St.; 571-312-0042) looks like a hipster hotel or fantasy closet. But the glammy new space specializes in femme shoes by brands such as All Black (flower flats, shown, $115), Lola Cruz and Pura Lopez, whose sexy suede wedges would work on the charming-yet-stiletto-killing brick sidewalks outside.

Shape-Shifter LONDON-BORN, D.C.-BASED furniture maker Graham

Campbell loves good design and public transportation, which is why he named his company the District Line. Made-in-D.C. tables such as the Embankment (shown, $575) and the ovaltopped Blackfriars ($1,550) use sustainable materials like bamboo and powder-coated aluminum to make a sleek statement, whether you live near a Metro stop or not. Order from Homebody (715 8th St. SE; 202-544-8445).

I would be happy to wear cruelty-free shoes, but I can’t find many non-ugly ones except for my Converse Chuck Taylors. Are any of the newer “vegan leathers” any good? In my experience, fake leather is sweaty plastic that cracks and peels. I know about Stella McCartney’s vegan shoes, but they’re way, way out of my price range. Can you help out a shoe lover who would like to transition to a leather-free wardrobe? — JILL

Ye Olde Coffee Hut’s speciality drinks. Will today’s huge gulp be a Mocha Blast Double Cap Latte or a Caramel-Arugula Macchiato? Lake Champlain’s new Chai & Mighty Hot Chocolate mix ($8, Whole Foods) blends two sorts of caffeine deliciousness into one cup. The subtly sweet and spicy result seems ideal for the crisp fall days we pray will continue.

Rosy News JUST SAY NO TO THE SYRINGE.

We don’t judge you for dreaming of Botox — those ads are creepily convincing. But before trying a pricey, pricky solution to aging, test a luxurious fix that reduces wrinkles the natural way. Sisley’s new Black Rose Cream Mask ($158, Neimanmarcus.com) plumps and rejuvenates skin with a tiny drop of plant extracts and amino acids. The mask is so light and nourishing, you don’t need to wash it off after use. =hWX 8W] _i ]Wj^[h[Z WdZ h[l_[m[Z Xo @[dd_\[h 8Wh][h WdZ AWj^[h_d[ 8eob[$ <_dZ ceh[ \eeZ" \Wi^_ed" X[Wkjo WdZ ^ec[ ]eeZi Wj ;nfh[iid_]^jekj$Yec%]hWXXW]$

Manolo says the short answer is no, the Manolo is of little or no help when it comes to finding the goodlooking vegan shoes. And, the long answer, it is also no, or perhaps nooooooooooooooooooo. Finding the vegan shoes, like the Stella McCartney vegan shoes, that are both stylish and not made from the recycled plastic waste is one of the most impossible of tasks for the shoe lover. It is because, of the course, from the beginning of time, leather has always been the material most perfectly suited for the shoes. It is inexpensive, handsome, pliable and durable. It is also moderately weatherproof and practical for most climates, and capable of being worked into beautiful forms. But the Manolo understands that there are those who object to the manner in which the leather is obtained, and so here is the Key West, the good-looking sandal from the vegan shoe specialist olsenHaus ($140, Endless.com), the shoes that may be what you are looking for. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

An Imaginable Loss Charlie Sheen stopped being funny to me long ago. And I’m talking “immediately after ‘Major League 2,’” not “when he clearly completely lost his marbles.” When he turned into a sideshow, watching him became something I simply couldn’t do, much as I can’t watch other sideshow performers shove nails up their noses. For all intents and purposes, I stopped thinking about Charlie Sheen altogether. And then I saw 8o Ah_ij[d “The Way,” out Friday FW][#A_hXo in select theaters. In it, Martin Sheen — Charlie’s dad — plays a man who loses his son, played by Charlie’s brother, Emilio Estevez. The film first serves as a reminder that Martin Sheen can really, really act. But it might also be seen as a predictor. The film was shot in 2009, before Charlie’s crazy circus act, so I wouldn’t say that Martin’s performance was affected by all the tiger blood and the winning. But watching Tom, Martin’s character, identify his son’s body, I couldn’t help but think, “That’s what he’s going to look like when Charlie dies. That’s what Martin Sheen looks like when he loses his boy.” This movie deserves publicity that doesn’t come from Charlie Sheen’s implosion; it’s moving and funny and an international showcase of outstanding performances. But Martin’s performance is so heartbreaking, so utterly devastating, that you have to hope it’s not a preview of things to come. Read Kristen’s previous columns at: expressnightout.com/thereelist

‘The Ides of March’ is well directed and acted, but clings too closely to dated ideals <_bc H[l_[m “The Ides of March” is based on Beau Willimon’s 2008 play “Farragut North,” but George Clooney, who directs and stars in this snappy, well-crafted but ultimately empty adaptation, changed the title. The new title also telegraphs that someone in this story of American realpolitik at its most cutthroat will get it in the end: Will it be Stephen Myers (Ryan Gosling), the gifted, cipher-like media consultant working for Democratic Gov. Mike Morris? Will it be Paul (Philip Seymour Hoffman), Steve’s boss and a seasoned political hack who, with his protege, is trying desperately to clinch the Ohio primary for Morris? Duffy (Paul Giamatti), the crafty operative working for Morris’ opponent? Or will it be Morris himself — portrayed by Clooney as a handsome, charismatic campaigner, who begins his stump speech with the stirring words, “I am not a Christian. I am not an atheist. ... My religion is written on a piece of paper called the Constitution.” No wonder Steve is in a swoon. As he says to a political reporter (Marisa Tomei), he’s a true believer, he’s drunk the Kool-Aid, this time it’s love: When asked whether he really believes “all this takeback-the-country nonsense,” Steve doesn’t hesitate. Morris, he tells her, is “The One.” That rhetoric, combined with

the Shepard Fairey-inspired graphics that are now required in every movie about politics in the 21st century, suggests that “The Ides of March” will offer fresh, of-themoment insights into post-Obama political culture. But viewers looking for penetrating insight — rather than a well-crafted political potboiler — will come away from “The Ides of March” sorely disappointed. Granted, Clooney exhibits a crisp, assured touch with arresting set pieces and vivid sequences of visual storytelling. Indeed, “The Ides of March” is so well directed and acted that it’s easy to overlook

It’s Only Acting George Clooney may have an interest in politics, both on screen and off, but public office is one role he’d never take on. “I’m not good at the kind of compromises that you have to make to get elected,” he says, adding that the current political climate is a deterrent. “It’s still the most polarized time we’ve seen in a long time.” (AP)

how dated and shallow it is. Perhaps most egregiously, “The Ides of March” is cynical when, with political figures and institutions at all-time lows in public opinion, cynicism is the last thing we need. Rather than probe the system it abhors, “The Ides of March” is content simply to reassure the audience that it’s still rotting from within, the stench kept at bay by spin-doctors like Stephen and the supine media he so expertly manipulates. issued a statement on Wednesday after Apple’s Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer.
