A Utah toddler shredded $1,060 in cash. Ben and Jackee Belnap were saving the money to reimburse Ben’s parents for football tickets, but the envelope disappeared last weekend. Jackee eventually found it in the shredder. Their son Leo, 2, helps shred junk mail and documents. He apparently got his hands on the envelope. The Treasury Department told Ben to ship the shredded cash for possible replacement. (AP)

The city of Kodiak, Alaska, is having no success selling an old crab boat that was used as an offshore strip club, the Anchorage Daily News reported Sunday. The Wild Alaskan was open for about five months in 2014 before its liquor license was revoked. Its owner later got five years’ probation for dumping human waste from the boat. It was impounded last year and has been up for sale since August, but no one has placed a bid. (EXPRESS)

Asian chefs tell their tales THE DISTRICT When Seng Luangrath was 12 and living in a refugee camp in Thailand, the trauma of exile was still fresh. She had grown up in neighboring Laos in a multigenerational household with a grandmother who taught her to cook traditional recipes over an open fire. But the country had been embroiled in civil war, and in 1981, Luangrath, her mother, an uncle and some of her siblings fled. Luangrath missed her grandmother, who had stayed behind. But for an adolescent who liked cooking, the camp provided a rich education. Pots, pans and stoves were distributed to the refugees, who came from parts of Laos that Luangrath had never been to. “People from the north, people from the south, people from the mountains, people of Chinese descent, she recalled. Some used woks. Some ate cicadas. “They cooked food I never grew up eating. She soaked it all in. Now, nearly four decades later, Luangrath sat in Thip Khao, the

Laotian restaurant she owns in Columbia Heights, and poured her life story into a microphone. The interview was part of a project on Asian chefs in the District, funded by the D.C. Oral History Collaborative, which trains people to record personal stories of the city. The project’s creator, Crystal Rie, is immersing herself in the lives of five local chefs, including two mother-son teams, who have influenced — and been influenced by — the city’s recent food explosion.
“Someone’s shortstaffed, we will go and help them out. ‌ We’re really proud that our city’s like that.â€? DANNY LEE , a co-owner and chef at Mandu, speaking on the tight community of Asian chefs in D.C. Danny, 37, followed his mother Yesoon Lee, 72, a Korean immigrant, into the restaurant business.
“The Asian population in D.C. is 4 or 5 percent, but you see so many Asian restaurants in D.C., said Rie, who grew up in South Korea. “I wanted people in D.C. to get to know the people who are preparing the food and the long stories of their struggles and their adjustment. In interviews, chefs talked with Rie about the District’s transformation from a bastion of steakhouse power lunches to a mecca for young foodies. Apart from local residents’ open-mindedness about food, Rie’s subjects also touted the tight community of Asian chefs in the District. The recordings Rie is making will be available for the public to view and use as part of the D.C. Public Library’s special collection. The goal is to deepen understanding of the city’s people and institutions, said Maggie Lemere, consulting oral historian and director of community engagement for the collaborative. “It’s one thing to go to a restaurant and have an amazing culinary experience, but it’s another thing to be invited in and have a deep appreciation for the cultures, communities and histories behind that, Lemere said. Fall’s colors are starting to emerge It has been a slow start to the autumn foliage season across the Mid-Atlantic as the warmth of summer has refused to fade. But fall foliage is starting to spread. According to a report last week from the Foliage Network, most of the Mid-Atlantic remains in the little/no change category. But parts of Virginia and western Maryland are seeing change. In the D.C. region, fall foliage usually peaks in late October to early November. (TWP)

Sen. Ben Cardin, left, debates Sunday with GOP candidate Tony Campbell, center, and independent Neal Simon.
Cardin defends himself during Senate debate MARYLAND The two main challengers to Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., criticized the two-term senator as too enmeshed in Washington’s partisanship during a feisty first debate Sunday that touched on everything from violence in Baltimore to Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. Cardin, a third-generation Marylander who maintains broad support in the state, delivered a strong defense of his record, saying he is proud of what he has achieved for Marylanders by working across the aisle. Cardin held a nearly 40-point lead in a Goucher College poll released last month, earning support from 56 percent of likely voters, compared to 17 percent for
Republican Tony Campbell and 8 percent for Neal Simon, who is running as an independent. “He is part of the problem,” Simon said of Cardin, adding that a vote for Cardin, who has represented Maryland in Congress for more than 30 years, is a vote for “more of the same.” Cardin outlined his work with Republican senators in his closing statement. “This is a tough environment,” Cardin said in his closing statement. “I’m going to fight to get Democrats elected in the midterms, but when the election is over, you’ve got to govern, you’ve got to work together.” Simon, a financial services executive from Potomac, said after the debate that he wants voters to

be able to see “what a different government could look like, and what it might look like if we didn’t just have a senator following his party 97 percent of the time.” During his closing statement, Simon called for two additional debates, which have not yet been scheduled. He and Campbell, a politicalscience lecturer at Towson University, delivered some of their sharpest criticisms in response to a question about Baltimore’s education system, which Campbell said suffers from a “lack of accountability.” Simon described Baltimore as a “city in decline” with an “unacceptably poor” public education system that Cardin should have done more to improve. Most arrested protesters now released Protests against the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh on Saturday led to 171 arrests at the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court, authorities said Sunday. U.S. Capitol Police said 164 people were arrested for “crowding, obstructing or incommoding.” They were processed off-site and released. But seven people arrested at the Supreme Court will remain in the D.C. jail until Tuesday, since Monday is a federal holiday, said Corporal Doug Harrison of the Supreme Court Police. He did not say what they had been charged with. Hundreds of angry protesters converged on the Capitol’s East Front plaza Saturday in the hours leading up to the vote to confirm Kavanaugh. (TWP)

Businessman charged in $16M fraud scheme A well-known Northern Virginia businessman has been charged with a $16 million fraud scheme. Federal prosecutors in Alexandria say Todd Hitt, 52, of Fairfax falsely claimed to investors that he managed $1.4 billion in assets as part of his financial company, Kiddar Capital. The charges allege Hitt persuaded investors to contribute more than $10 million to purchase of an office building in Herndon by falsely claiming he was investing $6 million of his own money. According to court documents, Hitt used some of the investors’ money on personal expenses like vacations and sports tickets. (AP) VIRGINIA

Mystery grows around missing Saudi journalist
OUT OF THIS WORLD
Rock used as doorstop worth $100K
ISTANBUL Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that he was closely following the investigation into the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, calling it “very, very upsetting,” but stopped short of confirming reports that he had been killed soon after he entered Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul last week. The Washington Post reported Saturday that Turkish investigators had concluded that Khashoggi, who has criticized the Saudi leadership, was killed in the consulate by a team sent from Saudi Arabia in what a person called a “preplanned murder.” Saudi Arabia has denied the accusations and said Khashoggi left the consulate soon after he arrived. Khashoggi visited the consulate to obtain documents related to his upcoming wedding. “I am following this issue, chasing it, and whatever the result, we will be the ones to tell the world,” Erdogan said. Khashoggi “is actually a journalist I have known for a long time, a friend of ours,” he added. Before Erdogan’s speech, a senior Turkish official confirmed that investigators believed Khashoggi was dead. Yasin Aktay, an adviser to Erdogan,

Turkish investigators: Khashoggi was killed in Saudi consulate
Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has been critical of his government.
told Reuters that Khashoggi had been killed in the consulate and that a team of 15 Saudi nationals was “most certainly involved.” His comments were the first official confirmation that Turkey had concluded the journalist was killed, and they added to the mounting pressure on the Saudi government to explain Khashoggi’s fate. A U.S. official said Turkish government officials have concluded Khashoggi was likely killed inside the consulate by a team that flew in with two private jets. Turkish officials further concluded that his body was probably dismembered, removed in boxes and flown out of the country.
Turkey’s Anadolu news agency reported Saturday that the Istanbul public prosecutor’s office had opened a probe into the disappearance. Turkish authorities have said Khashoggi never left the consulate. Rights groups and press freedom advocates have called on the Saudis to account for the whereabouts of Khashoggi, who contributed to The Washington Post’s Global Opinions section. If confirmed, Khashoggi’s murder would “constitute a horrific, utterly deplorable, and absolutely unacceptable assault on press freedom,” Reporters Without Borders said. ERIN CUNNINGHAM
A Michigan man curious about a rock he’d used for decades as a doorstop now knows its secret: It’s a meteorite worth $100,000. In fact, the nearly 23-pound hunk of iron and nickel is the sixthlargest meteorite found in Michigan, according to the Smithsonian Museum and Central Michigan University. David Mazurek said he took his doorstop to the university for examination after seeing reports in January of meteorite pieces selling for thousands of dollars. “I said, ‘Wait a minute. I wonder how much mine is worth,’ ” Mazurek said. He said the meteorite came with a barn he bought in 1988. “I’m done using it as a doorstop,” he added. “Let’s get a buyer!” (AP)

The number of hours Mormons will spend at church each Sunday — down from three — after a change announced Saturday aimed at making worship more manageable for members around the world. The switch, which takes effect in January, is a significant one for Mormons, who since 1980 have been expected to attend all three hours each Sunday to be considered active members of the faith. The news came during church’s twice-yearly conference, where a key leader also reaffirmed the faith’s opposition to gay marriage and its belief that gender is God-given and eternal. Crash was ‘like an explosion’ 20 die when a limo on its way to a birthday party blows a stop sign ELECTIONS

SCHOHARIE, N.Y. A limousine on its way to a birthday party ran a stop sign at the end of a highway, killing all 18 people in the limo and two pedestrians in the deadliest U.S. transportation accident in almost a decade, officials and a relative of one of the victims said Sunday. The collision turned a relaxed Saturday afternoon into chaos at an upstate New York spot popular with tourists taking in the fall foliage. The 2001 Ford Excursion limousine was traveling southwest on Route 30 in Schoharie, about 170 miles north of New York City, around 2 p.m. when it failed to stop at a T-junction with state Route 30A, State Police First Deputy Superintendent Christopher Fiore said at a news conference in Latham, N.Y. It went across the road and hit an unoccupied SUV parked at the Apple Barrel Country Store, killing the driver and 17 passengers, as well as two people outside the vehicle. The crash “sounded like an explosion,” said Linda Riley, of nearby Schenectady, who was on

Authorities said autopsies were being performed and didn’t release names of victims or speculate on what caused the limo to run the stop sign. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

Weak voter turnout voids gay marriage referendum
Interpol president who vanished is said to resign
A referendum aimed at putting same-sex marriage further out of reach in Romania was invalidated Sunday. The vote on a constitutional amendment that would have changed the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman instead of between “spouses” required voter turnout of at least 30 percent for the result to stand. Officials said that only 20.41 percent of voters participated. (AP)
France-based Interpol announced Sunday that it had accepted the resignation of its president, Meng Hongwei, who disappeared in China in September. The international police organization’s statement came after China revealed that the Chinese national was under investigation for an unspecified crime. He had been reported missing by his wife, who lives in France. (TWP)
Speaking through tears, Valerie Abeling said her 34-yearold niece, Erin Vertucci, was among the victims, along with her newlywed husband, 30-yearold Shane McGowan. Brazil Brazilians cast ballots in a divisive presidential election that followed major political scandals and economic decline. Pre-election polls showed a tight race between Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right congressman who waxes nostalgic about Brazil’s dictatorship, and Fernando Haddad, a leftist stand-in for jailed ex-President Luiz Inacio da Silva, who was barred from running.
Bosnia This general election could install a pro-Russian nationalist to a top post and cement the ethnic divisions of a country that faced a brutal war some 25 years ago. After polls closed, the two main contenders for the Serb seat in Bosnia’s three-person presidency both said they were leading the election for the post.

A deep ‘well of distrust’
Retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, right, swears in Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
CHIP SOMODEVILLA (GETTY IMAGES)
POLITICS When Christine Blasey Ford accused Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault last month, she did more than open herself up to unwanted scrutiny. She held up a mirror to a country in crisis, revealing its political players and embattled institutions not for what they claimed to be but for what they really are. The painful 20-day passion play that followed did little to alter the future makeup of the Supreme Court. Now-Justice Kavanaugh was narrowly confirmed Saturday by the Senate, 50-48, in a vote that tracked expectations from the summer, with only one Democrat and one Republican defecting from the party line. But few of the players emerged from the process unchanged or unblemished, underscoring the uncharted territory of deepening distrust and polarization that now defines the American system. “There is a split culturally, spiritually and socially,” said Sen. John Neely Kennedy, R-La. “It has to do with the pace of change more than anything else. There are some Americans who would like to see our country change quickly.” Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, attributed the divisions in Washington to wounds inflicted by Trump’s election in 2016, which he said “half the population can’t seem to get over.” Should Democrats win the House majority, as now appears likely, there will be a major push among some members to impeach both Kavanaugh from the high court and President Trump, all as special counsel Robert Mueller is expected to finish parts of his work on the federal probe into Russian interference

in the 2016 campaign. That whirlwind on the horizon has leaders in both parties anxious about how bitter national fights could escalate as Trump lashes out at his opponents and the 2020 presidential race heats up later this year. “The scar tissue will be thicker, the poison stronger, and the well of distrust deeper,” Republican strategist Michael Steel said. Democrats are beleaguered by Trump’s relentless combat, the White House’s tight grip over the FBI’s probe of Ford’s allegations, and fear that the institutional seams of the nation are fraying
Republicans sound off Senate Republicans were defiant on “Fox News Sunday,” brushing aside concerns about how they handled the confirmation process of Brett Kavanaugh and the potential costs in the midterm elections. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.: “We stood up to the mob,” the Senate majority leader said. “We established that the presumption of innocence is still important. I’m proud of my colleagues.” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.: “I’ve never been more pissed in my life,” he said. “I’ve never campaigned against a colleague in my life. That’s about to change.”
Unemployment rate fell to 3.7 percent in September, the lowest level since 1969
by the day as they try to rally their voters ahead of November. “There is a real question of whether we can all move forward amid these cultural and human challenges and the raw partisanship,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. “The damage will be enduring to the court and the country.” Without direct corroboration of the claims of sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh made by Ford and other women, Americans from the halls of Congress to the kitchen table were forced to fill in the blanks themselves. Public polling showed they did so by overwhelmingly falling back on their political identities. After Ford and Kavanaugh testified, 86 percent of Democrats told Quinnipiac pollsters they believed her account, compared with 84 percent of Republicans who said they believed Kavanaugh. “One can only hope that the Kavanaugh nomination is where the process has finally hit rock bottom,” Sen. Susan Collins, RMaine, said Friday. She was repeating a phrase — “rock bottom” — that Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, had used a day earlier as he lambasted the press for bias he believed it had shown in its reporting on Kavanaugh, by choosing to interview more supporters of Ford than Kavanaugh. Retiring Sen. Jeff Flake, RAriz., repeated the sentiment Saturday. When asked why he and others kept using that phrase, Flake said, “Because it feels like we are at the bottom.” What no one could offer was a credible path up out of the abyss. MICHAEL SCHERER AND ROBERT COSTA (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Kavanaugh’s impartiality to be tested COURTS Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court has put a spotlight on the dozens of federal cases pitting the Trump administration against Democratic-leaning states on issues including auto emission standards, immigration and a free-flowing internet. Kavanaugh lashed out against “left-wing opposition groups” during a recent Senate hearing, raising questions about whether he can be impartial deciding cases that revolve around Democratic policies or that directly involve Democratic officials. “I have even greater concerns about his judicial temperament and his ability to independently weigh cases that may involve the Trump administration,” said Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, a Democrat. Democratic states are in scores of legal battles with the administration over health care, the environment, consumer protections, immigration and other issues. Some advocates have suggested that Kavanaugh should step aside in those cases. Doing so is rare, though. “Justices don’t recuse themselves simply because they’ve taken ideological or partisan positions in the past that might favor one side or the other,” said Anthony Johnstone, a University of Montana law professor. “Part of what presidents get with their Supreme Court nominations is their views.” GEOFF MULVIHILL (AP)

Wife of Israel’s Netanyahu goes to court for fraud trial
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he had “productive talks” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang on Sunday, with the pair reportedly agreeing to hold a summit between Kim and President Trump as soon as possible. Pompeo and Kim met for about two hours and then had a 90-minute lunch together. Kim invited inspectors to visit the Punggye-ri nuclear test site to “confirm that it has been irreversibly dismantled,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. North Korea had committed to that but has been resistant to allow inspectors to visit.
Indonesia’s disaster agency said the number of dead from last month’s earthquake and tsunami had climbed to 1,763, mostly in the city of Palu, and officials said they feared more than 5,000 others could be missing. An agency spokesperson said many more people could be buried, especially in the Palu neighborhoods of Petobo and Balaroa, where more than 3,000 homes were damaged or sucked into deep mud. The government plan is to end search operations by Thursday, at which time those unaccounted for would be declared missing and considered dead, officials said. (AP)

Sara Netanyahu has been charged with improperly spending roughly $100,000 on celebrity chefs at the prime minister’s official residence, even though there was a full-time chef on staff. Mrs. Netanyahu has long faced allegations of overspending and abusive behavior. If convicted, she could receive a maximum sentence of five years behind bars, although that appears unlikely. (AP)

Control Alvin Kamara In just his second year, the Saints’ running back has become one of the NFL’s most explosive players — entering Week 5 third in the league in receptions and ninth in rushing yards. Washington has to know where he is at all times. Several Redskins have talked about swarming him when he gets the ball and say it may take more than one player to corral Kamara, despite the fact he is only 5-foot-10 and 215 pounds. But they can’t focus on him too much. Ingram will test the strength of the Redskins’ front seven as well, and New Orleans has so many weapons, Washington might not be able to put two defenders on Kamara as much as it would like.

Two weeks ago, the Redskins were able to hold off the Packers
because they kept Aaron Rodgers from making too many big plays. Aside from a 64-yard touchdown pass to Geronimo Allison late in the first half, Washington kept Rodgers from beating them with big throws. The Saints can score quickly, often late in games after the early grind of their run game has worn down opponents. The Redskins can’t have a repeat of last year, when New Orleans came from 15 points down in the last 5:58 to tie the score, winning in overtime in the Superdome.
Get pressure on Drew Brees A big part of the reason the Saints’ offense moves so well is that Brees barely faces a pass rush. Some of this is due to his own efficiency and unusually quick release. Because he is not a tall quarterback — 6 feet compared to the

Redskins’ 6-foot-4 Alex Smith — it’s essential for pass rushers to get into his sightlines, blocking his view of pass catchers. The “Monday Night Football” telecast will be built around Brees, who is just 201 yards from breaking the NFL’s career record for passing yards. He enters the game third behind No. 1 Peyton Manning and No. 2 Brett Favre.
Hit big plays offensively In their first two games, the Redskins were methodical in their approach — running over the Cardinals in the season opener and throwing under the Colts’ soft zone in Week 2. Against Green Bay they were able to take some deeper shots — with long passes to receivers Paul Richardson and Josh Doctson as well as tight ends Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis. The Saints are vulnerable to these plays. Their top cornerback, Marshon Lattimore, has not been nearly as effective as last season, and their defensive front has struggled at times. The Redskins are more of a team that controls the ball and aren’t constructed to come back quickly. Against New Orleans, however, they may be forced to hit their share of big plays just to keep up.

More than 40,000 runners started the race, which drew more than a million spectators. (AP)

Reaching for humanity Netflix’s ‘Private Life’ navigates the struggle of infertility with humor and warmth FILM REVIEW It’s deeply gratifying to see Tamara Jenkins return to the director’s chair with the infertility dramedy “Private Life,” 10 long years after her bittersweet, funny and wise screenplay for “The Savages” earned the filmmaker an Oscar nomination. Like that 2007 film, “Private Life” mines Jenkins’ life experience: specifically, her efforts to have a baby with her husband, screenwriter Jim Taylor. Starring Kathryn Hahn as Rachel, a successful 40-ish writer, and Paul Giamatti as her slightly older husband, Richard — a former theater director who now manages an artisanal pickle company in a rapidly gentrifying New York City — the film centers
on Rachel and Richard’s struggle to have a child. (That struggle bounces, with gentle yet sharply observant humor, from in vitro fertilization to adoption inquiries to the use of a donor egg.) Released Friday on Netflix, the comedy, while unflinchingly honest and prone to bandying about such terms as “intracytoplasmic sperm injection” and “follitropin,” is never really about technology. Rather, and to its great credit, it’s always about the people involved. In addition to the at times achingly vulnerable performances by Hahn and Giamatti, “Private Life” also includes indelible turns by such actors as Siobhan Fallon Hogan as Richard and Rachel’s couples counselor; Denis

O’Hare as Rachel’s fertility doctor; and John Carroll Lynch and Molly Shannon as Richard’s bickering brother and sister-in-law. Kayli Carter makes perhaps the deepest impression as Richard and Rachel’s niece, Sadie, who moves in with them after dropping out of Bard College.
The title “Private Life” refers, ironically, to the loss of privacy when two people’s most intimate relationship is, by necessity, opened up to the involvement of others. At the same time, Jenkins never forgets that the focus of this story needs to be on private, one-on-one relationships. Even as her screenplay cheekily name-checks “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Rosemary’s Baby” — shorthand for what are too often women’s roles as commodities in the patriarchy — “Private Life” is never glibly political. “Private Life” earns its laughs, to be sure. But more important, it earns the tears of recognition that fall, gently and warmly, between the yuks. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN

It’s a rude, crude and lewd animated series. It’s got full-frontal cartoon nudity, frequent F-bombs and an obsession with — let’s see, what euphemism to use? — um, spanking the monkey. There’s a reason “Big Mouth,” now streaming its second season on Netflix, is so vulgar. It’s all about puberty.
The main characters are middle schoolers — kids at heart, but at the mercy of raging hormones. In fact, their hormones are personified by hairy, horned (and horny) monsters who give very bad advice, like telling a boy to send a photo of his equipment to his crush: “Girls love that — especially when it comes out of nowhere with, like, zero context.” The main characters are pals Nick and Andrew, named for

“The mayor drives 12 miles from Manhattan to Park Slope to work out at this gym so, he has said, he can stay connected to the people.” @TRACYCONNOR, tweeting in response to a video of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio dismissing Nathylin Flowers Adesegun, a homelessness activist, at a YMCA in Brooklyn. When Adesegun attempts to engage the stretching mayor in a conversation about New York’s housing program, de Blasio cuts her off and says, “I’m in the middle of doing my workout. ... Sorry, I can’t do this now.” Adesegun is a leader of VOCAL-NY, a low-income advocacy group, which was protesting outside the gym where de Blasio was exercising.
“Tonight Awkwafina is the second Asian female & fifth Asian person to host ‘SNL’ ever. Can’t wait ’til we have to stop counting these stats.” @CANDSJOY, on the rapper and actress’s turn hosting the sketchcomedy show Saturday. In her monologue, Awkwafina referenced watching Lucy Liu host “SNL” back in 2000, and how it “changed what I thought was possible for an AsianAmerican woman.” “SNL” has often been criticized for lacking diversity.

“I like to think that this is because Banksy’s artwork is meant to be seen ... not owned.” @OXROSEMARYXO, reacting to the sale of Banksy’s painting “Girl With
Balloon” for $1.4 million at a Sotheby’s auction in London. After the winning bid, the painting slowly slid down, coming out of the frame in strips. Banksy later posted a video detailing how he’d put a shredder in the frame a few years ago, “in case it was ever put up for auction.”

Friday night’s bizarre episode of “The Ingraham Angle.” After a very long joke setup, guest and author Raymond Arroyo brought out a case of beer and promptly fell out of his chair trying to snap a selfie with host Laura Ingraham. They and Fox News maintain the fall was a planned bit.
“Melania Trump looks like she’s just trapped Indiana Jones in the Well of Souls.” @SCOTTM1987, tweeting about the first lady’s look while visiting Egypt. Trump’s outfit reminded many of villain Dr. Rene Belloq from “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” During her four-country trip to Africa, Trump drew backlash for a hat reminiscent of a pith helmet. Pith helmets were worn by Western settlers and are seen as a symbol of colonialism.

Kanye West shut down his Twitter and Instagram accounts over the weekend following a stretch of vocal support for President Trump. West’s most recent statements included an unplanned speech at the end of a “Saturday Night Live” taping, during which he wore a “Make America Great Again” hat, and a tweet in which he advocated abolishing the 13th Amendment. West previously deactivated his Twitter account from May 2017 to April 2018, when he was working on a series of albums, and also has deleted and restored his Instagram account multiple times. West’s next album, titled “Yandhi,” is slated for a Nov. 23 release. (EXPRESS)

A federal judge sentenced the star shortly after his brother, Marc Sorrentino, received a twoyear sentence on a similar charge. Both brothers pleaded guilty in January. They were charged in 2014 with tax offenses related to nearly $9 million in income. (AP)
Bette Midler apologized late Thursday night for a tweet that caused backlash when she quoted a song by John Lennon and Yoko Ono to compare women’s struggles to racism, writing that women “are the n-word of the world” and “They are the most disrespected creatures on earth.” Midler tried to defend the tweet before deleting it, saying to black women: “I am an ally and stand with you; always have. And I apologize.” (AP)
