It was a messy slog but Jake and Kirsten Barney of Lexington, Va., reaped the rewards of cash — and beer — in the North American Wife Carrying Championship in Newry, Maine. They finished first Saturday, with Jake carrying his wife on his back as they trudged through water and jumped over logs. They won five times Kirsten’s weight in cash ($630) and 12 cases of beer. Cobbler takes step to close

School evacuates over odd odor: Pumpkin spice

Lauretta, 85, who works the front desk and manages the books, are selling the building and retiring, taking a vestige of historic Petworth with them. The Calabros live in Adelphi, Md., and are looking forward to traveling, spending time with grandchildren and no longer having to commute. Customers say they have earned their retirement, but don’t know how they’ll find a cobbler to replace Philip’s Shoe Repair. “When I needed shoes repaired, he was the man to do it,” said Joseph Tillman, a D.C. taxi driver who has been coming to the shop since the late 1980s. When regular customer Rachel Mickey walked in on a recent day, Lauretta Calabro asked how she had been feeling before collecting her two pairs of pumps. “I used to get rid of my shoes until I found this place,” Mickey said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do.” As customers search for a new cobbler outside the neighborhood, Eng has just six more weeks to turn off that neon sign in the store’s front window. Then she’ll have a new neighbor on trendy Upshur Street.

THE DISTRICT Each morning, Grace Eng delivers a newspaper to the cobbler shop across the street from her home in the heart of Washington’s Petworth neighborhood. And each afternoon at about 4 p.m., she returns to help the cobbler and his wife pull the wily string that switches off the neon “OPEN” sign in the front window. Eng has lived in that same home on Upshur Street NW for most of her 70-plus years. She’s seen flower shops turn into thrift stores. Barber shops transform into trendy bars. And through the decades, Philip’s Shoe Repair was in the middle of it all. The Italian immigrant-owned shop opened in 1966 and survived the 1968 riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. It survived the drug epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s, when many stores on Upshur Street were boarded up. And in more recent years, it has survived gentrification, sharing a commercial strip with a pizza joint that Bon Appetit magazine

Report shows growth of white supremacists

VIRGINIA

Paper ballots will make a return in state this fall

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. A torchlight rally by white supremacists that descended into violence in Charlottesville, Va., in August drew participants from at least 35 states and spoke to the ability of the self-described “alt-right” fringe movement to mobilize adherents nationwide, the Anti-Defamation League said in a new report Sunday. The analysis of 200 participants came one day after Richard Spencer, the leader of the Aug. 11-12 event, returned Saturday with fewer than 50 followers to the home of the University of Virginia as it celebrated its bicentennial. Spencer organized what he called a “flash mob” and posted a 10-minute video of it. He called the protest — where demonstrators chanted, “We’re going to come back again” — a success, but the event was far smaller than August’s “Unite the Right” rally, which drew 500 to 600

Weakened Nate spares Gulf Coast major pain No deaths reported; crews work to restore power in four states GULF COAST Hurricane Nate brought a burst of flooding and power outages to the U.S. Gulf Coast before weakening rapidly Sunday, sparing the region the kind of catastrophic damage left by a series of hurricanes that hit the southern U.S. and Caribbean in recent weeks. Nate — the first hurricane to make landfall in Mississippi since Katrina in 2005 — quickly lost strength, with its winds diminishing to a tropical depression as it pushed northward into Alabama and toward Georgia

with heavy rain. It was a Category 1 hurricane when it came ashore early Sunday outside Biloxi, Miss., its second landfall after initially hitting southeastern Louisiana on Saturday evening. Nate’s receding floodwaters didn’t reveal any obvious signs of widespread damage in Biloxi, where Hurricane Katrina had leveled thousands of beachfront homes and businesses. No storm-related deaths or injuries were immediately reported. Nate knocked out power to more than 100,000 residents in Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Florida. As of Sunday afternoon, Alabama Power said more than 62,000 customers remained

without power, while utilities and cooperatives in Mississippi said more than 21,000 were without electricity. In Louisiana, there were scattered outages during the storm, while Florida Gov. Rick Scott said 6,800 customers had lost power in his state. Lee Smithson, Mississippi director of the state emergency management agency, said damage from Nate was held down in part because of work done and lessons learned from Katrina. “If that same storm would have hit us 15 years ago, the damage would have been extensive and we would have had loss of life,” Smithson said of Nate. “But we have rebuilt the coast in the aftermath of Katrina higher and stronger.” JEFF AMY (AP)

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., hit back Sunday after a Twitter tirade by Trump.

Trump, Corker exchange barbs White House now an ‘adult day care center,’ GOP senator tweets POLITICS Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, on Sunday called the White House “an adult day care center” after President Trump attacked him in a morning Twitter tirade. Setting off an extraordinary squabble between two leaders of the same party, Trump alleged in three tweets that Corker “begged” him for his endorsement, did not receive it and decided to retire because he “didn’t have the guts” to run again. In response, Corker tweeted, “It’s a shame the White House has become an adult day care center. Someone obviously missed their shift this morning.” By alienating Corker, Trump risks further endangering his legislative agenda. As chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, Corker would be a leading voice on determining the future of the Iran nuclear deal, should Trump “decertify” the agreement and punt to Congress a decision about whether to restore sanctions.

Corker also sits on the Senate Budget Committee and could play a key role in the upcoming debate over taxes. He already has expressed concerns with the administration’s tax-cut proposal. Trump’s lashing of Corker comes after the senator last week suggested that the national security team provides the president with badly needed adult supervision. In a remarkable statement, Corker told reporters that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House chief of staff John Kelly “are those people that help separate our country from chaos.” Trump used Twitter on Sunday to attack Corker, 65, who said last month that he won’t seek re-election in 2018. Trump tweeted, “Senator Bob Corker ‘begged’ me to endorse him for re-election in Tennessee. I said ‘NO’ and he dropped out … He also wanted to be Secretary of State, I said ‘NO THANKS.’ He is also largely responsible for the horrendous Iran Deal! Hence, I would fully expect Corker to be a negative voice and stand in the way of our great agenda. Didn’t have the guts to run!” PHILIP RUCKER AND KAROUN DEMIRJIAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Holiday continues to divide CULTURE Is it time to say “arrivederci” to Christopher Columbus? A movement to abolish today’s Columbus Day and replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day has gained momentum in some parts of the U.S., with Los Angeles in August becoming the biggest city yet to decide to stop honoring the Italian explorer and instead recognize victims of colonialism. Austin, Texas, followed suit Thursday. It joined cities including San Francisco, Seattle and Denver that had previously booted Columbus in favor of Indigenous Peoples Day. Federal government offices are closed today, and the holiday is marked in varying degrees throughout the D.C. region. The gesture to recognize indigenous people in some cities rather than the man who opened the Americas to European domination has also prompted howls of outrage from some ItalianAmericans, who say eliminating their festival of ethnic pride is culturally insensitive, too. “We had a very difficult time in this country for well over a hundred years,” said Basil Russo, president of the Order Italian Sons and Daughters of America. “Columbus Day is a day that we’ve chosen to celebrate who we are.” It’s not about taking anything

HENNY RAY ABRAMS (AP)

More cities ditching Columbus to honor indigenous peoples

A move to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day has new momentum, but it continues to draw protests from many Italian-Americans.

away from Italian-Americans, said Cliff Matias, cultural director of the Redhawk Native American Arts Council, which is hosting a two-day “Re-Thinking Columbus Day” event that began Sunday in New York City. “The conversation is Columbus,” he said. “If they’re going

to celebrate Columbus, we need to celebrate the fact that we survived Columbus.” The debate over Columbus’ historical legacy is an old one, but it became emotionally charged after a similar debate in the South over monuments to Confederate generals flared into deadly

violence in August at a rally in Charlottesville, Va. In New York City, where 35,000 people are expected to march in today’s Columbus Day parade, vandals last month doused the hands of a Christopher Columbus statue in blood-red paint and scrawled the words “hate will not be tolerated.” Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed a committee to evaluate whether monuments to certain historical figures should be removed, prompting a backlash from fellow Italian-Americans who vowed to defend the Columbus statue that has stood over Manhattan’s Columbus Circle for more than a century. The wave of Italian immigration to the U.S. began in the 1880s and was often met by harsh discrimination. Some Italian immigrants linked themselves to Columbus as a source of pride, and Columbus Day was recognized as a federal holiday in 1937. Indigenous Peoples Day began to gel as an idea in advance of the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ first voyage to the Americas. South Dakota began celebrating Native American Day in October 1990. Berkeley, Calif., got rid of Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous Peoples Day in 1992. Many places that have adopted Indigenous Peoples Day since then, including Alaska, have sizable Native American populations. Salt Lake City officials declared Tuesday they would keep Columbus Day but celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on the same day. DEEPTI HAJELA AND DAKE KANG (AP)

The most common form of the plague in Madagascar was, until this year, the bubonic plague, spread to humans through infected fleas. The majority of this year’s cases are pneumonic plague, which can be transmitted through coughing, according to the BBC. This form of the disease can kill an infected person in less than a day. To slow the outbreak, Madagascar is temporarily shutting its public institutions, including universities. Public gatherings, including jazz festivals and basketball tournaments, have been called off as well. While Madagascar’s scientists have monitored plague patterns for years and have the knowledge to mitigate the spread of this new, pneumonic plague, the money and resources to do so aren’t available. “We are scared — all of these deaths show that the situation is serious,” Miora Herinjatovo, 55, told Agence France-Presse last week. Playoff pendulum: Home runs swing series momentum Maybe something changed Saturday night as the autumn moon rose over the right field stands to get a glimpse of what, far down on planet Earth, was causing all that ruckus down at Nationals Park, a place that seldom raises it voice until the heavens take note. Within a matter of perhaps 15 minutes of lunacy, Game 2 of this NL Division Series changed from what seemed like a certain Cubs victory to a stunning, ground-shaking, 6-3 win for the Nationals. Eighth-inning home runs, first a titanic one by Bryce Harper to tie the score, then a three-run, wall-scraping thriller by Ryan Zimmerman to win it, tied this series at a

game apiece, but with enormous baseball gravitational pull suddenly on the Nats’ side heading into Game 3 today in Chicago (4 p.m., TBS). Harper’s homer was a truly special force-of-nature thing. Celestial orbs don’t blink. But if there had been a man in that moon, he might have been forgiven for flinching. At that moment, a stadium known for sanity and civility went out of its mind and remained in that state, perhaps learning a lasting lesson about how towns, their teams and crowds can take possession of a game. The blast, following a leadoff, pinch-hit single by Adam Lind, was of such force — both physical and symbolic for a team that has been frustrated, in one form or another, for the last six seasons — that the

LHP Jose Quintana (7-3, 3.74 ERA with Cubs) to start against Nats

packed house of 43,860 knew its meaning as the ball was still descending. “Baseball’s a daily game, but it’s also a game of momentum,” Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. “Going to Chicago for Game 3 with [Max Scherzer] pitching for us — we feel very confident about that.” Scherzer, who may win his third Cy Young Award this season, is exactly what any team, even the newly proud Cubs, don’t want to see. This Nationals team, locked in the scary ice of a horrific team-wide slump, has suddenly exploded, smashing out of its frozen, demoralized state. After scoring one run on just four hits — f-o-u-r — in the first 16 innings of this series, the Nats got five runs and 10 total bases in one frame. The measure of what a body blow this Nats comeback may

be to the Cubs is the length to which manager Joe Maddon repeated how wonderful everything was in his world. “I could not be happier,” he said of his team’s efforts. “Everything has been wonderful,” he added, not mentioning any final scores, like, you know, a 6-3 that looked like a mortal 3-1 lock for the Cubs. For two nights the Nats were in the kind of classic October nightmare that typically leads to a miserable winter drenched in self-flagellating torment. Harper did what sports heroes do. He flipped the narrative in a flash. Zimmerman rode its lingering shock waves. Strange things happen in October, matters that almost require a big fat moon gazing down to ensure the marvelous madness. “Baseball is contagious,” Zimmerman said. “Slumps are contagious. So is hitting. That’s why Harp’s homer was so important.” How important? Perhaps even the story arc of a Washington franchise, when we have the luxury of hindsight, will be seen to have changed.

What was originally a source of anxiety — Max Scherzer’s tweaked hamstring — could be a boon for the Nats as their ace is rested and available today in a 1-1 series. Here are keys to watch. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

3 Matchups

Against Scherzer, Cubs star Kris Bryant has hit .100, Anthony Rizzo .300 with a homer (in the past five years) and reserve Tommy La Stella .500 with two RBIs.

2 Recent history

Scherzer has four starts vs. the Cubs in the past three years. In three wins, he allowed two runs with 30 strikeouts. But he gave up seven runs in a loss last year.

1 How healthy is he?

The two-time Cy Young winner said Sunday he’s been sprinting to stress test his hamstring and is confident in his ability but concerned about re-injuring the muscle.

Philip Rivers threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Melvin Gordon with 2:58 to play and the visiting Chargers rallied to beat the Giants in a game between teams that started the year 0-4. The TD pass was Rivers’ third of the game and came shortly after Eli Manning lost a fumble at New York’s 11-yard line. A play before that, Odell Beckham Jr. fractured his left ankle and was knocked out of the game. Beckham had given New York a 22-17 lead with a 48-yard touchdown catch. (AP)

Cam Newton threw for a season-high 355 yards with three touchdowns to help the Panthers hold off the Lions in Detroit. Carolina (4-1) scored 24 straight points after trailing 10-3 before halftime. Detroit (3-2) rallied, but couldn’t get the ball back from Newton at the end. He converted a third-and-9 from the Carolina 24 with a 17-yard pass to Kelvin Benjamin with 2:00 left while clinging to a three-point lead. (AP)

Telvin Smith and Barry Church each scored on interception returns after picking off Ben Roethlisberger, and the visiting Jaguars beat the Steelers for the first time in a decade. Roethlisberger threw five picks and was sacked twice. Rookie Leonard Fournette ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns for Jacksonville. Antonio Brown caught 10 passes for 157 yards for Pittsburgh. Both teams are 3-2. (AP)

Tyrod Taylor was sacked six times as the Bills (3-2) managed just 221 yards of offense. (AP)

Alex Ovechkin has started the year with back-to-back hat tricks. The Caps play Tampa Bay tonight (7:30, NBCSWA).

‘Hungry’ Alex Ovechkin starts season on a tear and offered another explanation “You can see maybe he’s more hungry. I can see this in his eyes,” Kuznetsov said. Perhaps Ovechkin — who enters tonight’s game at Tampa Bay (7:30, NBCSWA) with seven goals through two games — turned a season of disappointment and offseason of doubt into motivation. After his goal scoring dipped, Ovechkin became an afterthought in conversations about the NHL’s current top players. Some questioned if his 33-goal campaign last season — a career year for most players, but a down one for him — signaled time catching up with him. Even the Capitals asked Ovechkin, 32, to make some

Offseason work pays with seven goals over his first two games CAPITALS Here are some reasons provided for Alex Ovechkin’s back-to-back hat tricks to open the season. For one, a lucky sister-in-law: “Every time she in town, I score hat trick,” Ovechkin said. Or it could be a change in equipment brand. “He’s got CCM back and seems to be scoring those goals again,” Montreal defenseman Karl Alzner mused. Center Evgeny Kuznetsov considered how Ovechkin’s summer training and weight were scrutinized over the past five months

changes this summer so he could keep up in the NHL’s younger and faster landscape. The club gave Ovechkin an ideal weight and body fat percentage that would help improve his speed and conditioning. Consider the message received. And in the past two games, Ovechkin has sent one of his own in his 13th NHL season. “He’s got a ton of pride so if you start questioning his pride then he’s going to show you,” Alzner said. Some snickered when coach Barry Trotz said the bar for Ovechkin is still 50 goals. Through two games, he’s on pace to score 287. ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN

A draw should be enough to get U.S. in The United States likely needs just a draw at Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday night to qualify for its eighth straight World Cup. Costa Rica’s 1-1 tie with Honduras on Saturday clinched a berth for the Ticos and put Christian Pulisic, below, and the Americans in solid position. A draw would qualify the U.S. for 2018 unless Honduras beats Mexico by at least 12 goals or Panama beats Costa Rica by at least seven goals. The U.S. can also qualify with a loss if Panama and Honduras both lose Tuesday. The Americans would be eliminated only if they lose and Panama and Honduras both win. (AP)

CBS clarifies report about Kaepernick MEDIA A CBS reporter clarified a televised report that stated that quarterback Colin Kaepernick told him he would stand during the national anthem if he played in the NFL again. Jason La Canfora said in a series of tweets Sunday that he didn’t actually discuss the issue with Kaepernick when they spoke Saturday. La Canfora said he was relaying previous reporting about Kaepernick when he told James Brown on “The NFL Today” that Kaepernick, the first NFL player to protest during the anthem, is “not planning on kneeling.” La Canfora tweeted later that he doesn’t know what Kaepernick would do. Citing unnamed sources, ESPN reported in March that Kaepernick would stand for the anthem if he played again. Kaepernick has not spoken publicly about what he’d do. After La Canfora backed off his initial report, Kaepernick tweeted: “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on,” attributing the quote to Winston Churchill, although some scholars have said the former British prime minister didn’t say it. La Canfora said his “primary takeaway” from meeting with Kaepernick was that the former 49ers QB is focused on football. He said Kaepernick does on-field work and throws hundreds of passes for several hours a day in New Jersey. (AP)

Get on the right page The experts suggest these books if you are feeling stuck or lost in your career Humans are hard-wired to find change uncomfortable. “It takes us out of our comfort zone and it means that we sort of have to grow,” explains D.C. career counselor Karen James Chopra. “And that growth edge always makes us a little antsy or anxious.” So when you come to a crossroads in your career, it can be hard to push through and make progress, but the right reading material can make a difference. As Chopra puts it: “If there’s a book about this, you are not alone.” Here are some of the books the career experts turn to when they’re making a transition, taking on a new role or feeling a bit burned out. Wellness and executive coach Karen Drake likes Loehr and Schwartz’s tactics for dealing with all that. “These authors talk about [how] it’s managing energy, not time, that’s really that key to high performance,” she says. Emotional intelligence is key for successful leaders. “For bosses, I think it becomes really important that you understand the emotional subtext of what’s going on, and start to recognize that not everyone’s like you,” Chopra says. This book can help new leaders understand that some people on their team may need different forms of motivation or guidance than others.

For the person new to public speaking ‘The Introvert Advantage: How Quiet People Can Thrive in an Extrovert World’ Marti Olsen Laney

Public speaking can be extra-tricky to tackle for introverts, and not just standing on a stage and giving a presentation. According to Baldus, “speaking up at meetings, talking one on one with direct reports or talking to your boss” can be anxiety-inducing. As a selfdescribed introvert, Baldus notes this book can help others “better manage themselves when it comes time to speak up at work.” ‘Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges’ Amy Cuddy

D.C. Council member David Grosso, below, I-At Large, introduced a bill Tuesday to create a student loan forgiveness program for District residents. He is proposing that the city cover up to five years of payments for individuals earning less than $75,000 a year or married couples with a combined income of less than $95,000. To qualify, borrowers would have to be enrolled in one of the federal government’s incomedriven repayment plans that peg monthly student loan bills to a percentage of a person’s earnings. They could apply for the benefit within two years of leaving school. Grosso says he has not sketched out cost projections, but that requiring applicants to be enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan could curb expenses. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In his book, Palmer describes “how people can get burned out if they’re doing what they think should be doing as opposed to what they really want to be doing,” Chopra says. “[Palmer] talks about his own struggles with depression and his own career journey,” Baldus says. “I think it’s sometimes helpful for people to see that depression or anxiety often go hand in hand with career decisions and career management.”

and folklore, of fact and fiction,” Robinson, 56, says as he leads the group to Gadsby’s Tavern, the next stop on an hour-long walking tour of Alexandria. “When I abandon you in the cemetery, you can decide which is which.” Alexandria Colonial Tours offers its Ghost and Graveyard tours throughout the year, though they’re particularly popular around Halloween. The spooky presentation is quite different from the company’s history

tours. Those are focused on “the buildings, but more importantly, the people who lived here,” Robinson says — and they’re entirely accurate. Even the stories in the ghost tour are “based on fact, up until you get to the ghost part.” During the tour, for example, he describes the “Female Stranger of Alexandria”: a woman who died in room 8 of Gadsby’s Tavern, but whose identity remains a mystery. Robinson was a vice president at Gap when the economic recession hit in 2008. “I was the last VP in and the first one out,” he says. Robinson spent a year looking for other positions. “I couldn’t find anything I could get my arms around and be passionate about,” he says. Then someone suggested that he become a tour guide. “I thought, ‘Well, you aren’t going to make VP-of-the-Gap money giving tours, but it was a launching point,” he says. “And I love the storytelling, and I love history.” Robi n s o n e n r ol le d i n a

year-long certificate program with Northern Virginia Community College that focused on travel, tourism and hospitality. One of his professors, a D.C. tour guide, met her class at a different area Metro station each Saturday, and the students took turns giving tours of that neighborhood. “Literally, within the first hour of the first tour, I said, ‘This is what I want to do,’ ” Robinson recalls.

Who would want the job The folks at Alexandria Colonial Tours hail from a variety of backgrounds, Robinson says: There are a couple with Ph.D.s; two stand-up comics; someone who works for the State Department; others who run nonprofits; some retired people; and a few who work at Mt. Vernon. “You have to be able to engage with the public,” he says. “This is not a job for a wallflower. You also have to have a really good filter.” Thousands of middle schoolers

take the tour each year, for example, and on those days, “We don’t talk about drunkenness — and there was a lot of it here in town — and we don’t use the word booze.”

How you can get the job While tour guides have traditionally been required to become licensed by passing a background check and a 100-question history test, regulations are loosening and vary by region. In D.C., for example, there’s no longer a test, but prospective guides do need to obtain a business license through the D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs. Robinson recommends joining the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, D.C., which offers a professional development program and other training opportunities. One given, he says, is that learning never stops: “If there’s a history book launch at the Library of Congress or National Archives, I’m there,” he says. He takes other guides’ tours often: On a recent weekend, that meant an African-American history tour in Alexandria. He doesn’t hesitate to recommend his second career to others: “There’s nothing hard about this job,” he says with a laugh. “I still love coming down here and putting on the costume. I love the stories, and I love Alexandria.” ANGELA HAUPT (FOR EXPRESS)

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

Roy Wood Jr. looks at the big picture TELEVISION Two months before the presidential election, “The Daily Show’s” Trevor Noah picked apart thencandidate Donald Trump’s outreach to black voters and his visit to a Detroit church. Then Noah invited correspondent Roy Wood Jr. to explain further. “Stop acting like Trump packed out the cathedral,” Wood joked. “He was in a normal-sized church, and it was half-empty. Do you know how hard it is to not fill a black church? Black people stop at church, on their way to church.” While Trump dominates so much of late-night, Wood finds fresh takes on the same news stories that every late-night comic is picking over. And he brings the air of a seasoned comic with an already refined voice. A Birmingham, Ala., native, he studied broadcast journalism in college and comes from a family filled with journalists. He started

stand-up at 19, and did radio for a decade. Through the years, he’s been on the road, done TV late-night sets and was a finalist on “Last Comic Standing.” But he became most visible in 2015 when he joined “The Daily Show” at the same time as Jon Stewart’s replacement, Trevor Noah. Since then, the political environment has become increasingly fraught and the late-night comedy field has gotten more crowded. On “The Daily Show,” Wood has played “Black Trump,” shot field pieces about guns on college campuses and joked about the latest news. “The biggest issue is to not fall victim to just the knee-jerk reaction. … Really looking deeper at the issues and what something means in the long term,” Wood says. “It’s one thing to go, ‘Can you believe what he said on North Korea?’ But then what does that mean in the bigger sense of diplomatic relations? The most difficult thing is to maintain sight of the bigger issue going on.” His few short years on “The Daily Show” have really affected his stand-up. Working on the

‘The Daily Show’ talent weighs in on writing jokes in the Trump age

‘Dynasty’

As a seasoned stand-up comic with a journalism degree, Roy Wood Jr. has a resume tailor-made for “The Daily Show.”

Discomfort zone Performing at the RTCA dinner is unlike taking the stage at a traditional club. The environment isn’t really conducive to comedy — the room is big, the stage is full of people and there’s a podium. “You’re stripped of everything,” says the 2017 headliner Roy Wood Jr. “All you have is your words and your microphone. It’s like acoustic comedy.” E.I.

show “has forced me to delve deeper into topics,” he says. “I can look back at jokes I even wrote five years ago, and see how much of a surface-level joke it was. It didn’t delve into the psyche of something.” As he gears up for his second

stand-up special in 2018 (his first, “Father Figure,” aired this year), Wood is also preparing an act of topical jokes for a room full of journalists and politicians at the Oct. 25 Radio & Television Correspondents’ Association Dinner, where he’ll “just start talking 100 percent about what’s going on in the world.” Writing a 20-minute set with news-driven material that must stay fresh has never been harder. As for how he’s approaching the gig, Wood says, “What I cannot do is come there and ignore the realities of these times. … The more egregious offense is to be tone-deaf than to bomb. If you’re going to suck, at least have an opinion.”

Loosely based on the early career of Jamie Foxx (who will have a guest spot), this new comedy stars Jay Pharoah as an up-andcoming black comedian bracing for fame.

“Anyone know how to bring a class action suit against McDonald’s for false advertisement? Asking for a few thousand friends.” @BRADLEYWBROWER, one of many people angry at McDonald’s because they didn’t get to try Szechuan sauce Saturday. McDonald’s brought back the 1998 sauce in very limited quantities in select locations, and people tweeted accounts of waiting in long lines when only 20 packets of sauce were available. Others asked for the sauce and got blank stares.

“All the coverage of Pence’s ‘walkout’ should be focused on the cost to taxpayers of what is quite clearly a PR stunt by the White House.” @SPEECHBOY71, tweeting after Vice President Mike Pence

left the Colts-49ers NFL game Sunday in Indianapolis after the national anthem. Pence tweeted that he left because a number of 49ers players kneeled during the anthem. Pence’s statement sparked a lot of discussion on social media. “Mike Pence not offended by Nazis and white supremacists with torches. Just black athletes in peaceful protest taking a knee,” @brazenpolitics tweeted.

“Complex shoulda been suspended for letting Bella Hadid go sneaker shopping and believing it was quality content.” @CLIFFSDEAD, tweeting about the Complex magazine video last week of supermodel Bella Hadid going sneaker shopping. In the video, Hadid said that a “homeboy” wearing Air Maxes “is gonna like ... get it,” and people roasted her on Twitter for it. “Bella Hadid said ‘dope’ ‘fresh’ and ‘homeboy’ within a 5 second span there has to be a law against that,” @elchapocruzman tweeted.

People shared their fond memories of AIM’s heyday. “Just because I haven’t used AIM in years doesn’t mean I’m not sad. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You can be firm and certain where others are equivocal today — but only now and then. Not every issue is going to be comfortable to you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Take care you don’t make the same mistakes someone else has because you’re following in their footsteps. Dietary Supplement Research

NIAAA invites volunteers, 21 - 60 years of age, who drink daily or almost daily, to participate in a study to examine the effects of a study drug on brain receptors and alcohol self-administration among heavy drinkers. Research participation includes 4-5 outpatient visits which consist of alcohol self-administration, blood draws, and filling out questionnaires. Volunteers should be healthy and drug-free, and not seeking treatment for alcohol-related problems. Compensation up to $1000 may be provided.

The DoD Center Alliance for Nutrition and Dietary Supplement Research at the Uniformed Services University is currently conducting a research study to determine if education about dietary supplement labels encourages modification of purchasing decisions for dietary supplements. The research study will take place at 6720B Rockledge Dr. (Suite 605), Bethesda, MD and includes two group sessions. Volunteers may be civilian or active duty military personnel. Military students at USU are not eligible to participate. If interested, please call (240) 630-0210 or email dietary-supplement-ggg@usuhs.edu

ARRESTS

Cindy Crawford wasn’t aware that she and her 16-year-old daughter, model Kaia Gerber, were walking in the same Versace show during Milan fashion week. “She’s like, ‘Wait, do we have to walk down together?’ “ Crawford told the AP. “I said, ‘No. I don’t even want to walk down with you. I’m going to walk down with the ladies that are my age. You can go with the girls that are your age.’ ” (AP)

Nelly was detained early Saturday after a woman called 911 to report being sexually assaulted by him on his tour bus in Auburn, Wash., according to police. The rap artist, who is touring with Florida Georgia Line, was released from custody and charges are being withheld “pending investigation,” according to his attorney, Scott Rosenblum. Rosenblum said the accusation is “completely fabricated.” Nelly addressed his arrest in a tweet Saturday night: “To be absolutely clear. I have not been charged with a crime therefore no bail was required.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/EXPRESS)
