When Daytona Beach, Fla., police found a man covered in tar on the roof of a gas station on Tuesday, he told them he was visiting family. Then he said he was an air conditioning repairman. Finally, he said he’d been sleeping on the roof and had smeared tar on himself as camouflage. Police said that since the man had a prying tool with him, they think he was a would-be burglar and charged him accordingly. (AP)

William Coleman III told police he was approached by a young man who asked for a cigarette, then asked about Coleman’s gun and finally pulled a gun from his own waistband and said, “I like your gun. Give it to me.” Coleman handed over his gun and the robber left on foot. (AP)

Pennsylvania Boulevard, non? French researchers have confirmed some residents’ worst fears: Washington, D.C., is a European city. That is, as far as our street grid is concerned. The paper, published Wednesday in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, analyzed the geometry of blocks from 131 cities and created “fingerprints” representing how often different kinds of shapes occur. With its small, irregularly shaped blocks, the city that D.C. most closely resembles is Paris, says study co-author Remi Louf, of the

16

Institute of Theoretical Physics in France. “The distinct feature of these cities is the presence of radiating avenues that were built to connect different points in the city, and that do not respect the layout’s underlying geometry,” he explained via email. Those American cities built after the advent of the automobile have regular grids and large blocks. Older cities, like Boston and Baltimore, hark back to our pedestrian past, with smaller, more walkable blocks. But unlike our neighbors to the north, D.C.’s

street pattern didn’t develop organically. It was planned — by notable Parisian Pierre L’Enfant. L’Enfant, however, would be surprised to see the resemblance between D.C. and Paris today. When he was plotting out the District’s grid in 1791, France’s capital city was a mass of squiggly, medieval streets. It wasn’t until the latter part of the 19th century that Paris began to resemble D.C., thanks to Napoleon III’s creation of major avenues connecting train stations. S.D.

local BETHESDA Authorities in Alabama on Thursday exhumed the body of a man believed to be a notorious fugitive who has been missing since being accused of killing his family in Bethesda nearly 40 years ago. The subject of a 1981 coroner’s photograph resembles William Bradford Bishop Jr., a one-time diplomat who has been wanted since he viciously attacked his mother, wife and his three young sons in 1976. They were all beaten to death with a small sledgehammer. The man in the photograph has

long been unidentified. On Oct. 18, 1981, he was walking down Highway 72 in Scottsboro, Ala., when a car hit and killed him, according to court filings. He had no identification and was assigned the name John Doe. That photo got investigators’ attention because it bears a striking resemblance to Bishop, who had a cleft chin, thin lips and sideburns, according to authorities. A spokesman for the FBI office in Birmingham, Ala., said he expected forensic comparisons to take at least two weeks.

275 miles to a swampy and wooded part of North Carolina, dug a shallow grave and set the corpses on fire. Bishop’s station wagon was later found in North Carolina at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Bishop was added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List in April, and in July, his case was featured on the CNN program “The Hunt with John Walsh.” A viewer called the FBI to point out similarities between Bishop’s picture and the photo of the unidentified Alabama man.

Republican members of Congress from Virginia are considering whether to appeal Tuesday’s decision by a panel of judges that declared the state’s congressional maps unconstitutional. A U.S. District Court ruled that the Virginia General Assembly must draw up new congressional maps by mid-April because the current maps concentrate African-American voters into a single district at the expense of their influence elsewhere. But an appeal would put the brakes on the frenzied political wrangling that has already begun.

Ex-officer gets 7 years for prostituting girls in D.C.

Counties look at education of unaccompanied minors

A former D.C. police officer who spent two dozen years on the force was sentenced Thursday to spend seven years in a federal prison for prostituting teenage girls from his apartment in Southeast. Linwood Barnhill Jr. pleaded guilty in June to two counts of pandering minors for prostitution and one count of child pornography. The 48-year-old, whose attorney says has suffered from depression since he joined the police force in 1989, resigned when he pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Officials in three Northern Virginia counties are scrutinizing the costs of educating the nearly 2,000 unaccompanied minors living there, with an eye toward recouping expenses from the federal government for keeping the children — who crossed the U.S. border without parents — in local public schools. The federal Office of Refugee Resettlement says that there are 1,775 such children living in Fairfax (1,131), Prince William (417) and Loudoun (227) counties. (TWP)

Bethesda blues: Prepping for a future of shutdowns By April 2017, the next president of the United States will have been in office for 100 days. Halle Berry and Adam Sandler will be eligible to join AARP. And the Bethesda Metro Station escalator replacement project, which started Monday, will finally end. If everything stays on schedule. There’s no doubt the trio of 106-footers — the second longest escalators in the Western Hemisphere (just behind Wheaton’s) — are past their

33

prime. So this has to be done. But it doesn’t mean people shouldn’t be cranky about the future, especially when Metro has warned that the project will likely lead to sudden “temporary closures.” Another reason to be annoyed: Metro announced this week that the chunk of the Red Line between Bethesda and Grosvenor will be shut down for 14 weekends in 2016. Again, it’s for a good cause. The work will plug up the water leaks that keep disrupting service and set the stage for the opening of the Purple Line.

Read more of Vicky’s columns at washingtonpost.com/express.

XX0164 1x1

Still, how are people not going to be driven crazy by this mess? “By driving,” replied Audra Meckstroth, 33, one of the riders I chatted with outside the Bethesda station. The Woodley Park resident has already mostly given up on public transit on weekends. “Saying, ‘Let me add an hour each way to my trip,’ that’s just not practical,” she complained about the frequent delays. If it gets worse, she added, she’ll just have to rely on her car all the time. Not everyone has a car, however, or works Monday to Friday. Ciara Sanders, 23, doesn’t think the shutdown decision is fair to people — like her — who work on weekends. “They should do this while everybody sleeps,” she said. Otherwise, there are bound to be folks who find themselves stuck. Things might be different if there were a good bus route backup. (Note to Metro: Maybe one way to stem escalatorrelated shutdown drama is by addressing that issue?) And I’d like to recommend just walking from Bethesda to Friendship Heights — but I know Wisconsin Avenue’s sidewalk-deficient “Green Mile” couldn’t handle the extra pedestrian traffic. Maybe the best plan to avoid what could be years of misery? Follow the lead of this wise 25-year-old guy entering the Bethesda station: “I imagine it’ll be an inconvenience for a lot of people, but I plan to be out of the country by 2016.”

FERGUSON, MO. Despite federal and state attempts to intervene during the two months since 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed, the Ferguson Police Department continued — and even accelerated — efforts to suppress peaceful protests using arbitrary and inconsistently applied arrest policies, according to Justice Department officials who are investigating the department and county police officials who have since taken over for the city. Washington Post interviews and research reveal that: Hundreds of protesters have been arrested since August for violating unwritten rules and committing minor offenses. Many have been taken to jail without being told what charges they face and are often released without any paperwork. For weeks, officers employed a “five-second rule” under which any protester who stopped walking was subject to arrest — a policy ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge this week. At least one officer patrolling protests wore a wristband that said “I am Darren Wilson,” referencing the officer whom protesters want to see prosecuted for the Aug. 9 shooting of Brown. County Police Chief Jon Belmar confirmed that an officer wore the

The practices continued into October until Belmar stepped in — stripping jurisdiction for policing the protests from the Ferguson station. PENNSYLVANIA Authorities say a journal left by ambush suspect Eric Frein provides a “cold-blooded and absolutely chilling account” of the night he is accused of opening fire outside a Pennsylvania State Police barracks, killing one trooper and injuring a second. Frein wrote that he saw his shot and took it, watching from a distance as his victim — who turned out to be Cpl. Bryon Dickson — dropped to the ground. “I was surprised at how quick,” he wrote, according to police. Authorities found the multipage journal Sept. 29 in a bag of trash at a campsite they believe was used by the 31-year-old suspect. They also found explosives,

ammunition, food, clothing and a water bottle whose DNA matched Frein’s, according to the affidavit. Frein is charged with firstdegree murder and other offenses in the Sept. 12 ambush that killed Dickson and wounded another trooper. Hundreds of law enforcement officials have been looking for Frein — described as a survivalist and expert marksman with a grudge against law enforcement — in the woods around his parents’ home in Canadensis, in the Pocono Mountains. Authorities are analyzing the journal but are convinced it was written by him, as it contains details that only would have been known by the shooter. MICHAEL RUBINKAM (AP)

Belongings collected after 1971’s Attica prison uprising were recently returned to former employees or their heirs. Held as evidence over the decades, more than 2,000 pieces of clothing, badges, eyeglasses and weapons were plucked from the mud and blood at Attica — an uprising that unfolded over five days and left 11 staff members and 32 inmates dead. THE DEFINITION: That newest, youngest generation — those born after 2004. The term was used in a chart from the October White House report “15 Economic Facts About Millennials.” THE BACK STORY: A May 2012 USA Today story explains one source of the term: The research team that demarcated 2004 as the end date of Millennialism also held a contest to name the next generation — “and folks voted overwhelmingly for the ‘Homeland Generation.’ ” Some other candidates include “Re-gen,” “Gen Z,” “Pluralist” and “New Silent,” all of which are stupid. No surprise, then, that Homeland is sticking — for now. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Ebola, the ‘next AIDS’? TOM FRIEDEN, DIRECTOR OF THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION, compared the Ebola outbreak in West Africa to the

AIDS epidemic at a conference Thursday at the World Bank. “In my 30 years in public health, the only thing that has been like this is AIDS,” Frieden said. “We have to work now so that this is not the world’s next AIDS.” As AIDS was 30 years ago, Ebola is a poorly understood disease, and this epidemic is already a large one. Researchers for the World Health Organization have warned that in the WASHINGTONPOST.COM MORNING MIX

long term, the virus could prove impossible to eradicate if swift action isn’t taken now. In other developments:

Another plea had just come in, just like the others. Directed at the leader of the Islamic State, it evoked the anguish of a mother whose son is held by captors who could well become his executioners. “I am trying to get in touch with the Islamic State about my son’s fate,” Paula Kassig wrote Wednesday. “My husband and I are on our own, with no help from the government. … How can we reach you?” The message pleading for the release of Peter Kassig, above, an aid worker captured last year in Syria, echoed the unheeded pleas of other families whose loved ones were ultimately beheaded. It carried notes of resentment over the perception that the U.S. had forgotten them, reflecting tensions over America’s controversial policy of refusing to barter with terrorists. The U.S. doesn’t often trade prisoners for hostages. It’s a prosecutable offense for Americans to independently bargain with terrorists. And the U.S. rarely tells hostages’ families everything they know, fearing “a yo-yo effect” from false leads that are inevitable from often-sketchy information out of Syria. All this has resulted in a nightmarish situation for families like the Kassigs. The U.S. won’t pay a ransom for their son. They can’t either. They’re left to wait for what feels like inevitable news. U.S. military planes arrive at epicenter of Ebola epidemic Six U.S. military planes arrived in the Ebola hot zone Thursday with more Marines. The fleet of planes that landed outside the Liberian capital of Monrovia consisted of four MV-22 Ospreys and two KC-130s. The 100 additional Marines bring to a little more than 300 the total number of American troops in the country, said Maj. Gen. Darryl A. Williams, the commander leading the U.S. response. As vehicles unloaded boxes of equipment wrapped in green-and-black cloth, the Marines formed a line on the tarmac and had their temperatures checked by Liberian health workers.

Spanish nurse’s health deteriorates

U.N. chief: 20x more Ebola aid needed

First study of vaccine underway

Airport workers walk off job in N.Y.

The health of Spanish nurse Teresa Romero Ramos — who became the first case of Ebola transmission outside of Africa — worsened Thursday, health officials said. Tests confirmed Monday that the sanitary technician had contracted Ebola, but Ramos said she only learned of her diagnosis from a media report — though she sensed something was wrong when doctors stopped entering her hospital room. Four doctors, four nurses, a hospital orderly and two beauty salon workers who came into contact with Ramos have been admitted to the hospital, bringing to 14 the number being monitored.

The presidents of three Ebola-stricken West African nations made urgent pleas for money, doctors and hospital beds Thursday to the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Washington. “Our people are dying,” said Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma. He described devastating effects of “this evil virus” — children made orphans, doctors and nurses dying, an overwhelmed medical system that can’t keep up. United Nations SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon called for a 20-fold surge in international aid to fight the outbreak. “For those who have yet to pledge, I say please do so soon,” he said.

University of Maryland researchers announced Thursday that the first study of a possible Ebola vaccine in Africa was underway. Scientists say three health-care workers in Mali received the experimental shots developed by the U.S. government. Mali has not had any cases of Ebola, but it borders the outbreak zone. Researchers say early safety tests should be done in Ebola-free countries to avoid complicating factors. If the vaccine appears to be safe, larger trials could be done in the outbreak zone early next year.

Fearful of exposure to Ebola, about 200 of the people who clean airplane cabins walked off the job overnight Wednesday at LaGuardia International Airport in New York. The walkout came a day after health and safety experts from the Service Employees International Union, which represents many unionized airport employees, raised concerns over whether cabin cleaners were being adequately protected. The union said its members need to be better prepared to deal with the threat. Also, an NBC News online survey revealed Thursday that a majority of Americans — 58 percent — support banning all flights to the U.S. from countries with an Ebola outbreak.

Missing: Kim Jong Un If North Korea’s leader doesn’t show up Friday, get ready for even crazier rumors WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE INTERSECT

AFP PHOTO / KOREAN CENTRAL NEWS AGENCY VIA KNS

NORTH KOREA Have you heard? Kim Jong Un is missing. Which can mean only one thing: He has been overthrown! His little sister, Kim Yo Jong, now runs the show in the most isolated nation on Earth. Or is it that the entire Kim dynasty, steward of North Korea for decades, is now out? It was a coup! The North Korean grand pooh-bah finally got too big for his britches — what with ordering men to mimic his haircut and feeding his uncle to wild dogs — and was deposed. Boom. Wait a minute. Kim Jong Un is sick! It’s true, he has been “getting fatter” lately. He does love cheese: “Kim Jong Un broke his ankle after he had put on extra weight from regularly consuming imported cheese,” reported India Today. Or is it gout? He has gout! “The increasingly obese Kim is merely suffering from a physical ailment, most likely gout, according to reports by South Korean media,” said Bloomberg Businessweek. Does Kim Jong Un have Ebola? Is he a member of the Islamic State? Is he selling meat on the side of the road in China? Where’s Dennis Rodman? Is he available for an interview? North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, who normally revels in the oddities of his profession, has not been seen by the world for 37 days, and the Internet is about to explode. But it’s nothing compared to what will happen Friday if he’s a no-show at the celebration of North Korea’s 69th anniversary. He was last seen attending a concert in Pyongyang on Sept. 3, nestled in a cushy chair, smoking

a cigarette, beside his demure wife, Ri Sol Ju. At the event, he was reported to have “labored on,” while “braving” the hot summer weather, giving way to a torrent of chatter that some mystery ailment had befallen Dear Leader. It continued Wednesday in South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, the source of many bankrupt Kim Jong Un reports, which reported that Kim was “recovering in the provinces” from this unknown sickness. The New York Times, meanwhile, chimed in with a statement from the South Korean defense minister who had determined Kim was “at a certain place north of Pyongyang.” The mystery deepens. According to Chosun Ilbo, the official “said some media reports about Kim are true and some are false, but ‘I believe that we get highly credible information from the intelligence unit of the defense ministry.’ ” This comes days after another breathless Ilbo report, which quoted one official stating that, after talking

Shiite rebels among 67 killed in Yemen bombings

with a North Korean official, “something in his tone told me that Kim Jong Un had no serious problems with his health.” Misinformation and innuendo are part of the game when it comes to covering and consuming North Korea news. Kim has been reported to have made five holesin-one on his first outing playing golf. North Korean scientists are said to have discovered evidence that unicorns exist. Part of the madness has to do with the media

The minimum number of public appearances Kim Jong Un made per month — before his disappearance — since the beginning of 2013, according to North Korea News. Last June, he made a record 33 public appearances. So having zero photoops since Sept. 3 is unusual. (TWP)

environment. Insane stories bring in insane page views, and no country churns out more insane news stories than North Korea. But even by those standards, the current rumor machine is humming at a heated clip, which again reflects just how little information breaks free from the Hermit Kingdom. The only consistent North Korea news we have to go on are Kim Jong Un’s public appearances, which often feature him touring some structure amid a gaggle of officials furiously scribbling down whatever wisdom nugget Kim drops. What is Kim possibly saying that’s so trenchant? Maybe everything. Maybe nothing. Who knows. Public speculation will surely mount, as anticipation grows for Friday’s ceremonies. “At some point if Kim fails to appear in public, then we can assume there is a serious problem,” John Delury, a North Korea expert at Seoul’s Yonsei University, told The New York Times. ‘Back-burners’ normal in age of digital infidelity The Internet has visited a new affliction on love: “digital infidelity.” A recent study by researchers at Indiana University found that Facebook users in relationships often use the site to keep “back-burners” — exes or friends they could connect with should their current relationships go south. Men have back-burners at roughly twice the rate of women, the study found. Among both, the practice is widespread: On average, respondents said they had romantic or sexual conversations with two people (!) besides their current partner. People in relationships have always had back-burners, the Indiana researchers point out — and emotional infidelity, a sort of destructive, unconsummated affair — went down in bars and over cubicle walls long before we had Gchat records of it. Yet conversing by text or direct message is so inherently one-to-one, and so impossibly easy, that the technology lends a kind of intimacy and in-public secrecy — a text can be sent from anywhere, with anyone around. If you’re in a relationship, all this is nothing to worry about, though. Indiana researchers found no correlation between the existence of back-burners and your partner’s commitment to your relationship. It’s just a technological wrinkle of modern love. CAITLIN DEWEY

3 THINGS TO WATCH

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has lost his past six starts.

Losing their way again Much like in 2013, Redskins are among the NFL’s worst teams after a 1-4 start

1

In the surprisingly competitive NFC East, the Redskins (1-4) are the only team without a winning record. They can’t afford to fall even further behind their division foes. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

REDSKINS AT CARDINALS | 4:25 P.M., SUNDAY, ESPN

REDSKINS Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: A season filled with promise is off the rails before the leaves start falling, with a lone victory over a fellow cellar dweller the only highlight. The 2014 Redskins appear to be quite similar to the 2013 edition, despite the addition of new coach Jay Gruden. Entering Sunday’s game at Arizona, Washington is 1-4, the same record it had after five games last season. This year’s squad has defeated only winless Jacksonville, while the 2013 Redskins had beaten only perennial loser Oakland over the first five games. That begs the questions: Are the Redskins getting better? Or is this the same stuff weary Washington fans have been putting up with for years?

NICK WASS (AP)

Stuck in last place

“This season is starting to shrink down on us right before our eyes and we’re at a point and time where if we don’t flip the script, we’ll be playing for nothing the rest of the season,” Gruden said. Already, the kind of circus atmosphere that has derailed previous Redskins seasons has started to creep in, with reports that Washington’s players didn’t seem upset enough after Monday’s loss to Seattle. “We’re 1-4. Nobody’s happy,” Redskins defensive end Kedric Golston said. “You’re always trying to figure out what you can do better to improve for the next week. Would it have been better if people were throwing their helmets up against lockers and turning over Gatorade coolers? We’re professionals. Judge us by what we do on the field.”

Key matchup CB BASHAUD BREELAND VS. WR MICHAEL FLOYD While everyone knows how dangerous Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald can be, it’s Floyd who leads the Cardinals with 259 receiving yards and four catches of more than 20 yards. “He’s a diverse receiver — he can block and run good routes,” Breeland said. “So you have to play him for possession routes and deep routes.” (E.S.)

It’s not completely fair to judge this year’s team against last year’s given the personnel changes and the injuries to Robert

Griffin III and DeAngelo Hall, among other factors, but Washington is scoring 22.4 points this year compared with 21.4 last year. “I look at some of the things on the film, it’s not just Kirk [Cousins] making mistakes,” fullback Darrel Young said. “It’s receivers sitting down in the zone, a running back missing protection, a lineman taking a shorter drop. Collectively, we just have to be together.” Defensively, the Redskins are in the upper half of the league in total yards per game allowed, but they are 26th in points allowed at 27.2 per game. The 2013 Redskins won game No. 6 — a wild 45-41 victory over Chicago — but they went on to lose nine of their last 10. Washington has a chance to steal a victory over a banged-up Arizona squad, but will it be fool’s gold again? “We’ve got to turn this thing around. Our sense of urgency has to be code one right now,” Gruden said. ELLIOTT SMITH (FOR EXPRESS)

3 Test their secondary The Cardinals have one of the best corners in the league in Patrick Peterson, but they allow the second-most passing yards against in the NFL (302.5 per game).

2 Rushing the rookie Arizona rookie quarterback Logan Thomas may make his first career start Sunday. Will Ryan Kerrigan, who has a sack in three of the past four games, get to the youngster?

1 Where’s Morris? After rushing for 91 yards in the season opener, Alfred Morris’ rushing totals have declined each game. He ran for a season-low 29 yards last week vs. the Seahawks.

SOMEONE’S GOT TO WIN

Number of career victories between the Redskins’ Kirk Cousins and Cardinals rookie Logan Thomas — the likely starting quarterbacks for Sunday’s game. Robert Griffin III is still weeks away from returning for Washington, while Arizona’s top two passers — Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton — are both dealing with injuries. (EXPRESS)

Abbey Slitor and Warren Weixler recently downsized. In March, the couple moved from an 850-square-foot one-bedroom in Mount Vernon Triangle to a 707-square-foot onebedroom with a den in Shaw. They were drawn by the growing, lively neighborhood, and they were ready to go smaller. They wanted to shed some of their things, dump their storage unit and live with only what they really loved or needed. “We work so hard trying to make our lives simpler,” Slitor says. “It makes us happy.” Slitor, 34, runs Social Market (socialmarketdc.com), a communications firm specializing in marketing and social media. eight years, Weixler, 32, co-owns Swatchroom (swatchroom.com), a design and fabrication firm a block away that does commercial interiors for places such as Twitter’s Washington offices and local restaurants including Lincoln and Copperwood Tavern. Both share a love of clean, simple design and clutter-free living and enjoy creative problem solving. “We discuss what multiple uses we can get out of a piece of furniture before we buy it,” Slitor says. “We don’t keep things around just because we think we might need them someday.” Weixler agrees. “I’m a pretty orderly person. Not as much as Abbey, but I’m not messy, and I like being organized.” Abbey Slitor and Warren Weixler and Truman, their French bulldog, downsized to a one bedroom with den in the City Market at O.

has an open feel. They decided to keep to a neutral palette for the furniture: white, beige and ivory, with some color added through accessories and one very bold Strandmon orange chair and ottoman from Ikea. The main source of color comes from the art they’ve collected, a lot of it by local artists. On move-in day, even with the best of planning, they were in for a surprise. They had realized they had little space for clothes, but they were surprised at how little space they had to store their food.

“We don’t keep things around just because we think we might need them someday.” — A BBE Y SLIT OR , WHO, WITH BOYFRIEND WARREN WEIXLER, HAD TO GET RID OF POSSESSIONS TO DOWNSIZE TO A 707-SQUARE-FOOT APARTMENT

Living well in a small space

What is affordable housing and why is it a concern in the D.C. area? Find out in next week’s issue.

Like many urban dwellers, they enjoy the ease of living and working in the center of things. They were intrigued by this new apartment complex with amenities including a gym, a rooftop dog park and dog-washing station for Truman, their French bulldog, and a Giant food store on the lower level. They knew they were trading in their larger quarters, but they loved the open feeling of the modern kitchen and its big granite island. The prospect of having a full-size washer and dryer and a balcony with a city view sealed the deal. Once they decided to move, Weixler worked with the floor plan to strategize what had to go and what they would need to buy: He figured out they could hold only 70 percent of their furnishings. For example, their bedroom would be smaller, and with a king-size bed, they would not have room for a pair of nightstands, table lamps or a TV. They devised a plan for storing clothes and accessories. “It’s important to have both shared space and personal space,” Weixler says, “what drawers and cabinets are mine, versus Abbey’s.” They divided the bedroom closet and installed two narrow mirrored Ikea Brimnes wardrobes in the den for out-of-season clothes. The new place is all white and

Here are some tips from Abbey Slitor and Warren Weixler that will help you make the most of your small apartment.

Small spaces often require furniture with plenty of storage. The Seguro media center from Crate & Barrel, above, has a small footprint but plenty of room inside. A narrow Ikea sideboard doubles as a food pantry, hiding tea and other comestibles.

Avoid table lamps. Use pendant lights, sconces and other wall-mounted lighting wherever possible. They take up less space. Slitor and Weixler hung a bronze pendant from World Market in the bedroom. Embrace multitasking pieces. The generously sized Kivik ottoman from Ikea opens to provide storage, can be used for extra seating and serves as a coffee table if topped with a tray. Pushed against the matching Kivik modular sofa and chaise, it can be part of a guest bed. In the bedroom, Weixler’s Ikea Hemnes three-drawer white dresser does double duty as a nightstand. Remove interior doors. If a door gets in the way, take it off. That’s what Slitor and Weixler did with the door to the laundry closet in the den so they could fit the extra wardrobes in the room. Make sure you stash the door somewhere safe to reinstall when you move. Coordinate colors of bedroom walls and furniture . If you have a small bedroom and a king-size bed, like Slitor and Weixler do, there isn’t much room for anything else. Because they had white walls, they installed two basic white dressers that blend in and make the room seem larger. Find easy ways to purge stuff. Weixler and Slitor downsized by selling on eBay and Craigslist, or donating to charity. Consider the building’s amenities. You can save space in your apartment if your building offers such things as a gym, dog-washing facilities and a lounge you can use for parties, as Slitor and Weixler’s does. A grocery store downstairs means they can shop daily and don’t have to stockpile food and supplies. J.K.

Their glamorous new kitchen with its generous island had minimal cabinets and only two drawers. “The movers kept carrying in more and more boxes labeled ‘kitchen,’” Weixler says. “We knew some of it had to go, so as were opening the boxes, we set aside things to get rid of.” The kitchen island was great for prepping food, serving and eating, but they had counter space for only their coffee machine and their espresso maker. They needed a pantry. But with only a small sliver of hallway to work with, choices were limited to a long, narrow sideboard. They found Ikea’s Stockholm model, only 15½ inches deep with two drawers inside. Another storage-rich purchase was the Seguro media console they got at a Crate & Barrel outlet, which has a sliding door, shelves and drawers to stash their modem, Playstation, record player and vinyl collection, plus board games. Slitor says her mother taught her not to get attached to material objects. But there are exceptions, such as some pieces from her grandmother: a headboard, a jewelry box and two silver platters. “I love to eat popcorn out of my grandmother’s crystal bowl,” Slitor says. “I’ve learned how nice it is to have attachments to the smaller things in life.” JUR A KONCIUS ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

The stories of our time. For e-readers and tablets. The Washington Post’s complete coverage of the NSA spying scandal, which it helped break, is now collected in one place to give as comprehensive a view of the story as is known.

NFL Week 6 preview GAME OF THE WEEK

Cowboys at Seahawks 4:25 p.m. Sunday

PATRICK SMITH (GETTY IMAGES)

The best rush defense in the NFL stands in the way of running back DeMarco Murray’s sixth straight 100-yard game. The teams’ ground games will be featured in this matchup of the league’s top two rushing attacks.

UPSET SPECIAL

Bears over Falcons 4:25 p.m. Sunday

Chicago has lost two straight games, but Jay Cutler and the Bears’ dynamic receiving corps will get to a Falcons’ secondary that has forced just two interceptions all season. Look for Cutler to have a big game.

Leadoff hitter Nick Markakis and the Orioles open the best-of-seven ALCS series against the Royals on Friday.

O’s Markakis savors this playoff journey ORIOLES Nick Markakis endured the lean years with the Orioles, suffering through one losing season after another during the worst stretch in franchise history. If that wasn’t bad enough, when the Orioles finally turned things around in 2012, Markakis sat out the playoffs with a broken thumb. Now, nine years into his major league career, the 30-year-old right fielder is getting his first taste of postseason baseball. No one on Baltimore’s current roster has spent more time with the team than Markakis, whose loyalty to the Orioles has never wavered

since they made him their firstround pick in the 2003 draft. Even after Baltimore went 70-92, 69-93 and 68-93 in his first three major league seasons, Markakis remained confident he would ultimately reach the playoffs with the Orioles. So he signed a six-year extension in 2009 during Baltimore’s miserable run of 14 straight losing seasons. “In the past, judging by the development and the direction the team was going, I knew it was just a matter of time,” Markakis said. The Orioles’ leadoff hitter ranks among the top 10 in franchise history in games, at-bats,

runs, hits, double, RBIs and walks. In his own understated way, he’s made a name for himself on lists that include Hall of Fame stars Cal Ripken Jr., Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson. “You look at the all-time leaders in hits in Baltimore history, that gets your attention,” manager Buck Showalter said. “Sometimes we don’t completely grasp what we’re watching here.” He’s making the most of his playoff run. Markakis heads into Friday night’s ALCS Game 1 having had three RBIs and three runs in the Orioles’ three-game sweep of Detroit in the ALDS. DAVID GINSBURG (AP)

MLB PLAYOFFS

Orioles won’t carry Davis on ALCS roster Suspended slugger Chris Davis won’t be playing in the ALCS for the Orioles. Manager Buck Showalter said Thursday that Davis will be omitted from the 25-man roster, which must be submitted on Friday morning before Game 1. Davis was suspended for 25 games on Sept. 12 for testing positive for Adderall, a banned amphetamine. (AP) Cardinals manager Mike Matheny says Adam Wainwright to start Game 1 of NLCS

PLAYER TO WATCH

Branden Oliver, Chargers RB vs. Raiders, 4:05 p.m. Sunday

The Chargers’ backfield is depleted, but the undrafted rookie out of Buffalo stepped in last week to rush for 114 yards against the Jets, who have one of the top rush defenses in the league. What will Oliver do for an encore?

BOLD PREDICTION

Bengals will win by double digits Panthers at Bengals, 1 p.m. Sunday

Coming off a demoralizing 43-17 loss to the Patriots, Andy Dalton and the Bengals will bounce back in a big way — even though Dalton likely will be without his favorite target, A.J. Green. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

STAT OF THE WEEK

Number of games in a row, including the playoffs, that Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch has scored a touchdown. The 28-year-old is sixth in the league in rushing yards per game (76.5) and is on pace for a career high in receiving yards.

Five unlikely unbeatens

Imagine a playoff that includes Arizona facing TCU in one semifinal and Mississippi State meeting Georgia Tech in the other. Is it a long shot? Sure. But it’s not quite as far-fetched as it may have seemed before this season of surprises began. Here’s a look at five unbeaten teams that started the season unranked. STE VE MEGARGEE (AP)

HOW THEY GOT HERE:

No. 10 Arizona is 5-0 for the first time since 1998 with a young offensive backfield featuring redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon and true freshman running back Nick Wilson. Linebacker Scooby Wright leads a defense that has eight sacks over its last two games. In its past two games, Arizona edged California 49-45 on a Hail Mary and pulled off a 31-24 stunner at then-No. 2 Oregon.

The 22nd-ranked Yellow Jackets have found an ideal quarterback for Paul Johnson’s triple-option attack in Justin Thomas, who has rushed for 470 yards while also throwing seven TDs with only one interception. Georgia Tech beat Georgia Southern 42-38 on a touchdown with 23 seconds left and erased a 10-point deficit in a 27-24 triumph over Virginia Tech. “I’d say they’re resilient,” Johnson said. “Nothing much seems to affect them.”

Marshall’s the one team on the list that isn’t really a surprise. Before the season, Marshall was touted as a team that could go unbeaten thanks to star quarterback Rakeem Cato and a tissue-soft schedule. Cato directs an offense that leads all FBS teams with 595.6 yards per game. “Cato has done a tremendous job,” Marshall coach Doc Holliday said. “He is extremely unselfish and could care less about his stats. What he cares about is winning the football game.”

Quarterback Dak Prescott has led No. 3 Mississippi State to its highest ranking ever. The Bulldogs have gained at least 500 yards in each of their games this season, though their brutal schedule gives them little time to celebrate. “The difference between a pat on the back and a kick in the rear end is about six inches,” Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said. “We have to make sure we keep in the high-end of those six inches right there because if not, it will turn to the second.”

The Horned Frogs already have matched their win total from last season, when they finished 4-8. TCU’s offense, led by quarterback Trevone Boykin, is averaging 516.2 yards per game, 171.4 more than last season. That represents the best statistical improvement of any FBS offense this season. “We are good enough to win the Big 12,” TCU linebacker Paul Dawson said after a 37-33 victory over then-No. 4 Oklahoma.

Both teams are coming off big wins over top 15 SEC foes. Bulldogs QB Dak Prescott, left, has accounted for eight TDs in his past two games against LSU and Texas A&M.

Coming off a 37-33 win over Oklahoma, TCU’s stout defense gets another tough test against QB Bryce Petty and the Bears’ offense — which leads the country in scoring.

A week ago, this looked like a Pac-12 title game preview, but with both teams coming off losses to unranked teams, UCLA and Oregon are just trying to get back on track. (J.T.)

Georgia RB Todd Gurley suspended indefinitely while school investigates alleged violation of NCAA rules

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo indicated he would consider holding out quarterback Keenan Reynolds for Saturday’s game against VMI to provide the junior additional time to heal from multiple ailments. Reynolds left Saturday’s 30-21 loss to Air Force with 24 seconds to play after absorbing a blow to his shoulder. In the second game of the season, Reynolds hurt his right knee against Temple. Backup Tago Smith would make his second start this year if Niumatalolo decides to keep Reynolds on the sideline. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

DEFENDER OF THE YEAR

Steve Birnbaum

Bobby Boswell

Ben Olsen

The second overall pick of this year’s draft didn’t play a single league minute for United in the season’s first three months. Since starting center back Jeff Parke went down with a season-ending injury in early June, Birnbaum hasn’t missed a minute. He has stepped in seamlessly as a starter, and with a relatively weak rookie-of-the-year field this season, Birnbaum has a great shot to take home the award.

The last time a United defender won this honor, it was Boswell in 2006. The 31-year-old, making his return to the team in 2014 after a six-year stint with the Houston Dynamo, appears well positioned to win the award again. The veteran’s leadership and organization are huge reasons the team has conceded an Eastern Conferencelow 34 goals this season, as opposed to 59 in 2013.

The architect of the team’s historic turnaround, Olsen has transformed from an under-fire coach of a three-win team to an MLS coach of the year front-runner and a recent recipient of a long contract extension. Considering he took United from three wins and the bottom of the league to 15 wins and the top of the Eastern Conference, there’s little doubt this is Olsen’s award to lose.

Weaving a tangled Web

PARAMOUNT PICTURES

Not rated, 74 minutes

The documentary offers a sense of life in the Queensbridge Houses in Queens, N.Y., while also diving into the title’s focus: the 20th anniversary of “Illmatic,” an exalted hip-hop album by former resident Nas. The movie is inspiring and tragic and, directed by street artist One9, it’s captured in an artful, emotional way that will speak to an audience beyond rap fans. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Men, Women & Children’ makes a compelling case for privacy on the Internet FILM REVIEW “Men, Women & Children,” Jason Reitman’s adaptation of a novel by Chad Kultgen, gamely recalls the “problem pictures” and socially themed melodramas of the 1940s and ’50s, revisiting the genre with a combination of reflective thoughtfulness and flat-footed earnestness. An omnibus of interlocking stories set in a prosperous neighborhood in Austin, Texas, “Men, Women & Children” chronicles a group of parents and children navigating the wilds of the Internet, often at odds with each other as they search for sex, selfexpression, support and celebrity. It’s a portrait that will no doubt resonate with any number of families engaged in nightly battles over “Minecraft” or wondering what their adolescents are really texting about into the wee hours.

The kids represented in “Men, Women & Children” largely follow the playbook for cinematic parables of its ilk. There’s a soulful jock who’s just quit the football team (Ansel Elgort), the shy loner with whom he strikes up an unlikely friendship (Kaitlyn Dever) and the pretty blonde cheerleader (Olivia Crocicchia). While the young people of “Men, Women & Children” manage eating disorders, cyberbullying, sexual pressures and the lure of competing online identities, their parents are facing their own problems and temptations: In one of his rare dialed-down, thoroughly appealing performances, Adam Sandler appears with Rosemarie DeWitt as a married couple nervously eyeing Ashley Madison and other sites dedicated to discreet indiscretions.

‘Men, Women & Children’ (R) DIRECTOR: Jason Reitman STARS: Jennifer Garner, Ansel Elgort, Kaitlyn Dever and Adam Sandler IN A NUTSHELL: Social media users of all ages navigate the murky waters of privacy, love and danger on the Internet.

In the film’s most caricatured role, Jennifer Garner portrays a woman consumed by worry about social media’s effects on her daughter. Using the full array of tracking software at her disposal, she maniacally tries to patrol a virtual world her child has long since figured out how to hide. “Men, Women & Children,” which addresses issues of privacy, protection and self-projection, sometimes with welcome nuance, at others with well-meaning but starchy obviousness. Although Reitman occasionally reverts to the kind of turgid melodrama that made his last film, “Labor Day,” such a slog, this film is brightened by some terrific, alert performances, namely from Sandler and DeWitt, and also the interchanges between Judy Greer and Dean Norris, here playing a hapless single dad. To its credit, “Men, Women & Children” seems to allow for a rational middle ground between technophobic Luddites and the lamentably over-wired. It never turns down the moral panic entirely, but neither does it let it completely boil over. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Unassuming opera hopeful Paul Potts wowed judges of “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2007 with a big heart and big voice. The movie about him treads a well-worn path toward its climax, beginning with our hero’s (James Corden, above) difficult childhood. Yet despite the story’s familiarity, its star manages to turn its many tropes into a winning formula. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

Robert Duvall anchors “The Judge” as a family patriarch counting on his lawyer son to defend him in court.

Duvall’s performance makes a case for ‘Judge’ FILM REVIEW “The Judge,” a courtroom procedural tucked into the folds of a family melodrama, feels like one of its own characters, a onetime champ who could have made it to the big leagues had his potential not been squandered by someone else’s poor choices. The movie certainly has casting on its side. On paper, a showdown between Robert Downey Jr. — here playing a predatory Chicago defense attorney named Hank Palmer — and Robert Duvall, as his estranged father, looks like one of those too-goodto-miss cinematic cards, a bout between two heavyweights whose game of rope-a-dope approaches heights of poetry. If only the story surrounding them were in as fine a form: It’s as if writer-director David Dobkin (“Wedding Crashers”) created “The Judge” by ticking the boxes on a set of screenwriting instructions. Thriller element, check. Adorably wise child, check. Rekindled love interest, check. Explosive family dynamics soothed by loving and laughter, check, check, check.

Dobkin earns extra points for choosing some gorgeous Massachusetts locations to play the all-American town of Carlinville, Ind., where Hank reluctantly returns for his mother’s funeral, and where he stays when his father, a respected judge, faces some legal trouble of his own. Like an unwieldy cross between a John Grisham legal potboiler and “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “The Judge” is a baggy, tonally allover-the-place pastiche of genres that, sharply edited and streamlined, would have resulted in an absorbing, even sophisticated, grown-up drama. Not surprisingly, considering Dobkin’s résumé, “The Judge” possesses its share of astringent humor, the most welcome of which comes by way of Vera Farmiga, who plays Hank’s bleach-blond high school girlfriend with a large tattoo and tartly funny throwaway lines. Such digressions take away from the molten core of “The Judge,” which is the spiky, unresolved relationship between Hank and his demanding, distant father. Downey’s Hank swoops

into Carlinville much like Tony Stark in “Iron Man” mode, dripping sarcasm, contempt and unthinly veiled superiority. Duvall has been so good for so long that it’s easy to take him for granted, but watching his wily, touching, flawlessly calibrated performance here serves to remind viewers just what screen acting looks like, or should look like. Even in the film’s most sentimental, maudlin and conveniently extreme moments, Duvall dominates “The Judge,” much like his character dominates his own courtroom: through sheer force of presence, integrity and implacable authority. “I think most women identify with it, and that’s why the book was so successful, because women find it sort of deliciously undeniable, something they recognize in themselves and their friends. … I’d just stay with Complicated Girl.” ROSAMUND PIKE, star of “Gone Girl,” telling Vulture where she stands on the book’s infamous “Cool Girl” speech, in which her character condemns girls who change themselves to please men.

What he does: “His books are always variations of the same theme,” said Peter Englund, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, “about memory, about loss, about identity, about seeking. I don’t think he’s difficult to read. You can read him easily, one of his books in the afternoon, have dinner, and read another in the evening.” Where to start: Englund recommended that readers unfamiliar with Modiano begin with “Missing Person” (“Rue des boutiques obscures”), a novel from 1978 that describes a man who lost his identity during the Paris Occupation. “It’s a fun book,” Englund said. “He’s playing with the genre.” Why you haven’t heard of him: Although he has published more than 20 books, including children’s books, few of them are available in translation in the United States. “He’s a well known name in France — not anywhere else,” Englund said. What he’s saying: Modiano told nobelprize.org that he would celebrate “with my Swedish grandson. … It’s to him I dedicate this Prize. It is, after all, from his country.” What’s next: Yale University Press will publish Modiano’s “Suspended Sentences: Three Novellas” next month. RON CHARLES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FILM Sometimes the story doesn’t end once it’s in print. In “Kill the Messenger,” out Friday, Jeremy Renner plays Gary Webb, a real-life reporter with the San Jose Mercury News. In 1996, Webb wrote a series of articles alleging that the CIA used drug traffickers as informants who, with the agency’s knowledge (or at least without its interference), imported huge amounts of crack into the U.S. and used proceeds to fund the Nicaraguan Contras, a rebel group that was helped immensely by the CIA. Both Webb and his paper, though, were unfamiliar with the kind of international investigative reporting that the story required; consequently, there were errors and omissions that called the story’s accuracy into question. (While Webb got most of his facts right and was eventually mostly vindicated, he couldn’t prove it when other

papers started digging into the story.) After resigning from the paper, Webb never again worked in journalism, and he died of an apparent suicide in 2004. “Kill the Messenger” spends only its first hour or so on Webb’s “Dark Alliance” series; the rest of the film is about the aftermath for him and the paper. “It became two stories,” director Michael Cuesta says. “The story he began to tell, and the story of how it was spun. When the project came to me, I remembered the story, but I didn’t remember that he had to defend his story.” Cuesta was drawn to the project by Webb’s underdog status.

IN A NUTSHELL: Despite the film’s heavy-handed effort at vindication, Renner delivers a performance that is satisfyingly contradictory. MICHAEL

(The opening shot shows Webb walking into the paper’s Los Angeles bureau, in the same building where The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times have big, fancy offices while he’s tucked in a tiny, cluttered corner.) “He was an outsider. He didn’t have the contacts like a lot of journalists do. The paper he worked for didn’t really do international,” Cuesta says. “I just related to his doggedness, his sense of obsessiveness.” Webb’s drive to break the story expanded to the News as a whole, Cuesta says, which only opened the door for more mistakes. “The [paper] wanted the big story as much as he did. He didn’t have a Ben Bradlee,” Cuesta says. “I think he needed that. Not that I’m completely throwing the editors under the bus, but I think it was important to make that clear.” In the end, Cuesta says, the driving force of both the “Dark Alliance” series and the film is Webb himself, flaws and all. “I think it’s a hero’s journey, in a way,” he says. “He’s a flawed hero fighting an unwinnable war.”

film review Going to a family film usually entails plenty of eye rolling and low expectations. So imagine the novelty of a family-friendly movie that manages to make parents laugh while still firmly appealing to the elementary-school crowd. “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” is the latest adaptation of Washington-area author Judith Viorst’s 1972 picture book. In the film, Alexander Cooper (Ed Oxenbould) believes he’s had more than his fair share of terrible days while his family coasts on a wave of good luck. So on the eve of turning 12, his birthday wish turns the other Coopers’ luck around while things start magically looking up for Alexander. To be sure, the broad physical comedy is predictable and occasionally cringe-inducing, but the cast pulls off the jokes. Steve Carell is in his element as the father juggling baby duty with a job interview. Jennifer Garner, who has mastered the art of playing harried moms, is pleasantly frazzled as she attempts to run her household and impress her boss (Megan Mullally).

Give ’em an R?!: ‘Pride’ rating tells a lot about MPAA Parents of America: I promise that your children are safe from “Pride.” No matter what the MPAA says. In an effort to make itself even more irrelevant, the MPAA gave the British film, about a London group of gays and lesbians in 1984 who financially support a Welsh mining village during a strike, an R rating. Why? They aren’t saying, because they never say. It was long rumored that you could use one F-word and still get your PG-13 rating; then “Philomena” got a PG-13 despite four F-bombings (maybe the Irish accent helped?). “World War Z” is PG-13. “The Dark Knight” is, too. So is “Man of Steel.” You can totally shoot zombies, blow up buildings and break a guy’s neck on screen and avoid the dreaded R. You can definitely show butts and sideboob and maybe a glance of an actual breast.

But you can’t, it seems, be gay. “Pride” has a positive message (unless you love Margaret Thatcher), zero violence and no sex — but gay characters are apparently so worrisome to those behind the MPAA curtain that depicting them, even in a G-rated manner, merits an R. If “Pride’s” gays and lesbians were anything but gay or lesbian, the filmmakers could throw in a butt or two and still get a PG-13, preferably if the butts belonged to women.

‘Pride’ (R) DIRECTOR: Matthew Warchus STARS: Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West and Andrew Scott QUICK TAKE: Even when it skates recklessly close to shopworn cliches, “Pride” manages to navigate around them with vigor and keeps its sure-footed balance, never sacrificing authenticity on the altar of sincerity, sweetness and light. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In England, where the British Board of Film Classification has to go into detail, “Pride” got a “15.” The board cited a scene in which sweet old ladies laugh over Playgirlstyle magazines (the content of which you’d have to pause, zoom and enhance like you’re on “CSI” to see anything good. I’m sorry, “bad.”) and another where men in a club are decked out in “bondage-style” clothing. Good thing “The Fifth Element,” with Milla Jovovich running around in nothing but straps, got an R. Oh, wait — that was PG-13, too. In “Pride” we have a film with some off-color language (but less than in “Philomena”) and some sexy clothing (but more actual cloth than in “The Fifth Element”) and tiny, blurry images of what might be penises, which are dirty, horrible things that no one under 17 should ever see. I’ve been done with the MPAA for a long time, but with “Pride” it’s shown a whole new level of bigoted idiocy. The MPAA seems to believe that a gay character can’t appear on screen without terrifying audiences. Sorry, MPAA, but — to borrow an old turn of phrase — gay characters are here. They’re queer. Get used to it. Read Kristen Page-Kirby’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/thereelist

Sip, savor and celebrate

“I’m not usually one to complain about magazine covers, but … the expressiveness of Farrow’s shot! Beside her, Swift looks blank, like any emotion has been air-brushed away.” COMMENTER ALUDRA AT JEZEBEL.COM thinks the 40th anniversary cover

of People magazine misses the mark. The publication enlisted Taylor Swift to re-create its 1974 premiere cover featuring Mia Farrow as “The Great Gatsby’s” Daisy Buchanan, shown inset in the lower left of the new version.

“He probably recognized that much of his audience wouldn’t rush to turn on their televisions early on a Sunday morning. As [Chuck]Todd told a reporter last month, it’s a tough time slot for the young folks: ‘Are they rejecting the brand or are they just not getting up?’ ”

“Facebook needn’t panic, though. Even if its namesake platform is now totally passe, the kids still love Instagram — so Zuck wins, either way.”

makes a case against the publication’s new policy to no longer publish photos from stock exchange floors because most trading today takes place digitally. Tuchman, above, has been photographed multiple times in his more than 25 years as a broker at the New York Stock Exchange.

GABRIEL SHERMAN AT NYMAG.COM/DAILY/ INTELLIGENCER provides one explanation as to

why Jon Stewart passed up an offer from NBC News to host “Meet the Press.” According to reports out Wednesday, the network offered him virtually “anything” to take the position.

“In total, Calvin caused an estimated $15,955.50 worthof damage over the duration of the comic strip.” MATT J. MICHEL AT PNIS.CO reports

the quasi-scientific total monetary damage caused by Calvin and Hobbes’ antics in Bill Watterson’s stories. He used various real-life costs to find the sum of all the damage the comic pair did in their decadelong run.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may be paying too much attention to what another is doing, and not enough attention to what you should be doing. Concentrate! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll be grateful for the assistance you receive from someone who has been in your position in the past. He or she knows the ropes. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) A walk down memory lane may actually lead you to some danger, but you can avoid it if you keep your priorities straight. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’re facing a rather stubborn problem that is better solved at home than anywhere else. Make time to deal with it.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

There is reason for you to be hopeful about a situation that is finally coming to a climax. You can prevail when all is said and done.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Employ patience, and you’ll avoid the pitfalls that threaten those around you who are racing about as if speed were everything. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may not feel as though everything is correctly in place, and you’ll be prompted to go back and review as much as possible. TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Comics POOCH CAFE | PAUL GILLIGAN

You can mount a challenge to an individual who has been in control for quite a while. In your view, it’s time for someone else to take the reins. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You will be in the driver’s seat for much of the day, but when the time comes, you will be ready to give someone else a chance to guide the project. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You can trust your instincts to steer you in the right direction when your senses are not able to give you accurate information. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You can

expect a slowdown today, but that shouldn’t keep you from reaching your destination. Priorities may shift somewhat, however. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The work you do for someone else is no less valuable than that which you do for yourself. What goes around comes around.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

‘It’ll do,’ says fan of Pippi Longstocking A Willie Nelson fan has paid $37,000 for braids of Nelson’s hair auctioned off Sunday, Reuters reported. The hair was cut in the 1980s, when Nelson’s hair was red. They were owned by Waylon Jennings, who was given them by Johnny Cash at a party celebrating Jennings’ sobriety. The auction was of the late Jennings’ possessions. The buyer’s identity was not disclosed. (EXPRESS)

Paula Patton has filed for divorce from Robin Thicke and is asking for joint custody of their son. The actress filed for divorce from the “Blurred Lines” singer last week in Los Angeles, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The two announced they were separating in February after nine years of marriage. They have a 4-year-old son. Thicke’s latest album, “Paula,” sold only 24,000 units in the U.S. when it was released in July. Thicke promoted “Paula” with several public appearances that were accompanied by reconciliation pleas. (AP)

Gwyneth Paltrow wants to hang with Chris Martin’s 24-year-old girlfriend, Jennifer Lawrence, Us Weekly reported. (Martin, 37, and Paltrow, 42, separated in March.) “She’d like to spend a little time with her and thinks they’d probably get along,” said a source. “Her take is, ‘Hey, he could do worse,’ ” said another source. (EXPRESS)

Hilary Duff said on “Watch What Happens Live” that Aaron Carter’s recent professions of love for her (on Twitter and in interviews) are making her uncomfortable, E! News reported. The two dated when Duff was 13, and she’s married. “It’s … ugh! I don’t know. I don’t know what to say about it! It was so many years ago,” she said. He “was very sweet” at the time, though, she added. (EXPRESS)
