After Dustin Radney of Apopka, Fla., spotted a 400-pound black bear raiding his trash last week, he quickly alerted authorities — and invited a neighbor for a photo shoot. The Facebook images show the bear feasting in the background while Radney, his neighbor and two young children pose. “It was really entertaining,” Radney told WKMG-TV. He said sheriff’s deputies monitored the scene and the bear was always at least 50 feet away. (EXPRESS)

A food bank in Wales received a can of Heinz kidney bean soup last week that was so old the price on it was in a discontinued form of currency. Staff members determined the can was at least 46 years old. Donated along with it was a can of Green Giant corn from the 1980s, UPI reported. The food bank is keeping the cans on hand to use as a reminder that people should check the expiration dates on their packaged food. (EXPRESS)

A haven for displaced pets REGION Lizzie’s hurricane finally ended on a bright September day in a Washington townhouse, four weeks and 1,400 miles from the floodwaters that overwhelmed her Houston neighborhood in August. “Welcome home, Lizzie-poo,” whispered Kayla Robinson, 26. It was the end of a journey that started at an emergency animal shelter in Texas, spanned nine states and touched foster families and rescue volunteers in five cities. Lizzie is one of hundreds of displaced pets now pouring through a pop-up pipeline established between storm-ravaged areas from Texas to Puerto Rico and urban centers around the country, particularly Washington. Here, the flow of Harvey, Irma and, soon, Maria dogs is reshaping the local rescue landscape. “We’re upping all of it — fundraising, volunteers, donated supplies, space,” said Colleen Learch, spokeswoman for the Arlington-based Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation. Last month,

the group took over a defunct boarding kennel in Falls Church that can accommodate up to 200 of the animals it has been taking from the hurricane zones. Another organization, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, has taken in more than 200 hurricaneaffected pets, putting out calls on social media to expand its volunteer list to 1,300 and holding weekly mass adoption events. “We’ve learned a lot about disaster response,” said Lucky Dog executive director Mirah

Horowitz. This ballooning of Washington’s rescue scene began before Harvey even made landfall. A week in advance, based on experience with Hurricane Katrina, animal welfare groups knew to clear shelter space to make room. Washington’s Humane Rescue Alliance, which has taken in more than 150 hurricane animals, emptied its kennels as the storm approached by holding a free adoption weekend, with the fees of up to $250 paid by Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer and his wife Erica, a rescue alliance board member. The event placed more than 150 animals in four days. Lucky Dog brought Robinson and Lizzie together. Robinson saw the dog’s profile online after failing to get small dogs at previous adoption events. She arrived at the adoption event at Petco in Rockville with an application already filled out. Her mother ran to submit it while Robinson parked the car. It took a few days to get approved, but Robinson finally got to take Lizzie home, the last transfer in a chain of custody that led from hurricane to haven. STEVE HENDRIX (THE WASHINGTON POST)

More dockless bikes hitting D.C. market China’s largest bike-share company, Ofo, is coming to the District. Its distinctive yellow bikes — more than 10 million of which are available across China and 12 other countries — will appear in the city starting today. The company joins four others that recently started operating in D.C. as part of a six-month pilot of the dockless model. Ofo officials say that by the end of next week, they plan to offer 400 bicycles — the maximum allowed by the city. That will bring the number of dockless bicycles in the District to nearly 2,000. two around Easter. School systems must build in at least three snow days before June 15, and some — like Montgomery — have typically opted for a longer-than-required school year. In most recent years, Montgomery has had a 184-day calendar. Some of the proposals for next year reduce that to 180 days. “Personally, I think we are shortchanging children by using a shorter school calendar,” O’Neill said. “Our calendar should be going up in the number of days, not going down.” Still, she said she does not want to reduce spring break or open schools — for the first time in more than 40 years — on the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. DONNA ST. GEORGE

Democrat Ralph Northam has maintained a lead over Republican Ed Gillespie in Virginia’s governor’s race, according to a poll released Monday. Later this week, Vice President Pence will hold a rally for Gillespie in southwest Virginia. The survey from the Wason Center for Public Policy found Northam had the support of 49 percent of likely voters, while Gillespie had 42 percent. The poll, the latest to find Northam either leading or in a dead heat, comes as the White House ramps up efforts to support Gillespie in the nation’s marquee statewide contest this year. Pence plans to campaign at a Saturday rally in Abingdon, an area that voted heavily for President Trump.

EDUCATION School systems across Maryland are looking at stark choices as they draw up calendars for next school year. Spring break could be shortened. Time off on the Jewish holidays could be in jeopardy. Extra days of instruction could fall away. In Montgomery County, with the state’s largest school system, five scenarios are on the table as the school board discusses the issue today. Few are thrilled with the options, so the district is welcoming other ideas, too. “I wish someone would come up with a miracle suggestion,” said Patricia O’Neill, chair of the board’s policy committee. “There’s clearly not time to do everything we’d like.” The conundrum comes as school district leaders face the second year of a state mandate that requires Maryland schools to open after Labor Day and close by June 15. The schedule, ordered by Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, came as a way to extend summers for families and boost tourism and the economy. But school systems have struggled with the fallout. Some cut back on spring breaks or teacher work days for this school year. But many

say that next year’s calendar plan is more challenging as a result of yearly shifts in holidays and other dates that make a condensed timeline even tighter. “There aren’t any really great options,” said Rebecca Smondrowski, a school board member, noting how much easier it would be if school let out a week later in June. Under the constraints the district faces, she said, “we’re going to have to take things away from people that they’re used to and that they value and appreciate.” Putting calendars together is trickier than many realize, district leaders say. State law requires a 180-day school year. It also gives students time off on 15 other days next year, including seven between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, and

Firefighters assess the scene as a house burns in the Napa region of California on Monday.

Winds sweep wildfires through wine country At least three killed and 1,500 businesses and homes destroyed CALIFORNIA More than a dozen wildfires whipped by powerful winds swept through California wine country Monday, destroying at least 1,500 homes and businesses and sending thousands fleeing as flames raged unchecked through high-end resorts, grocery stores and tree-lined neighborhoods. At least three people died, state fire officials said, but they warned that those estimates were bound to climb. The flames were burning “at explosive rates” because of 50 mph winds, said

Ken Pimlott, director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Fourteen large fires were burning north of San Francisco, prompting Gov. Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency in Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties. It was unusual to have so many fires take off at the same time, fire officials said, though October has generally been the most destructive time of year for California wildfires. The ferocity of the flames forced authorities to focus primarily on getting people out safely, even if it meant abandoning structures to the fire. The fire area covered more than 100 square miles over eight counties.

Santa Rosa, the largest city in the fire area with a population of about 175,000, was hit hard. The city lost a Kmart and an unknown number of other businesses and homes as the blaze shut down schools and forced patients at two hospitals to evacuate. “It was an inferno like you’ve never seen before,” said Marian Williams, who caravanned with neighbors before dawn as one of the wildfires reached the vineyards and ridges in her small Sonoma County town of Kenwood. Williams could feel the heat through the car as she fled. “Trees were on fire like torches,” she said. ELLEN KNICKMEYER (AP)

Irma ruined turtle nests on Fla. coast Scientists have monitored the nests of green sea turtles along a stretch of Florida’s coast for 35 years, observing an upward trend. Then came Hurricane Irma. University of Central Florida researchers who run the project said more than half the green sea turtle nests along the 13 miles of Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge were washed out by the storm surge last month. Loggerhead turtles got off a bit easier: 24 percent of their nests were lost. Unusually high tides are now compounding the troubles. It could take 25 years or so to know how bad it is, researchers said. That’s about how long it takes for sea turtles to reach sexual maturity. (TWP)

Google uncovers Russian-backed ads on platforms Google for the first time has uncovered evidence that Russian operatives exploited the company’s platforms in an attempt to interfere in the 2016 election, according to people familiar with the company’s investigation. Google has found that tens of thousands of dollars were spent on ads by Russian agents who aimed to spread disinformation across Google’s many products, which include YouTube, as well as advertising associated with Google search and Gmail, and the company’s DoubleClick ad network, the people said. The discovery by Google is also significant because the ads do not appear to be from the same Kremlin-affiliated troll farm that bought ads on Facebook — a sign that the Russian effort to spread disinformation online may be a broader problem. On Monday, the company issued a statement saying, “We have a set of strict ads policies including limits on political ad targeting and prohibitions on targeting based on race and religion. We are taking a deeper look to investigate attempts to abuse our systems.” The company is looking at a set of ads that cost less than $100,000. It is still sorting out whether they all came from trolls or whether some came from legitimate Russian accounts. ELIZABETH DWOSKIN, ADAM ENTOUS AND CRAIG TIMBERG

Turkey wants U.S. to review decision to halt visa services

Feinstein, oldest senator at 84, to seek re-election

A special prosecutor said Monday that he will add a charge of involuntary manslaughter against Michigan’s chief medical executive in a criminal investigation of the lead-tainted water crisis in Flint and an extraordinary outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease. Dr. Eden Wells was in court for a key hearing on other charges, but the hearing was postponed until Nov. 6 after the announcement by Todd Flood of the Michigan Attorney General’s Office. Five other people have been charged with involuntary manslaughter tied to an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the Flint area in 2014-15. (AP)

Turkey’s justice minister on Monday said he hoped the U.S. would review its decision to suspend most visa services for Turkish citizens following the arrest of a U.S. Consulate employee in Istanbul that has deepened tensions between the NATO allies. Meanwhile, Turkish authorities said a second employee of the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul had been “invited” to the chief prosecutor’s office to testify. Authorities did not say why. The U.S. on Sunday suspended the issuing of visas for Turkish citizens hoping to visit the U.S. after Turkey arrested the consulate employee last week on allegations of espionage. (AP)

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the oldest sitting U.S. senator, says she’s running for re-election in 2018. The California Democrat said on Twitter that there’s “lots more to do,” such as fighting gun violence, combating climate change and boosting access to health care. Feinstein, 84, said, “I’m all in.” She will be running for her fifth full term. On Sunday, Feinstein told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that “I’m ready for a good fight. I’ve got things to fight for.” Feinstein, who had a pacemaker implanted in January, joined the Senate in 1992 after winning a special election. She has been a leading advocate for gun control. (AP)

nation+world Winner in economics honored for his analysis of people’s behavior STOCKHOLM University of Chicago professor Richard Thaler on Monday won the 2017 Nobel Prize in economics for his work on behavioral economics, which tries to understand how humans make decisions, especially bad ones. Thaler, 72, is one of the leading experts in the relatively new field, which combines psychology and economics. He has made a career

of studying people’s poor choices — everything from why people save so little for retirement to why NFL teams that go early in the annual draft typically do a poor job of selecting new players. Thaler, who is American and earned his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Rochester in 1974, has found that humans prefer instant gratification, even if they know that being patient would yield them more money or a better life down the road. EPA chief tells Kentucky coal miners he will repeal Obama-era carbon emissions rule ENVIRONMENT Environmental P rotection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt told coal miners in Kentucky on Monday that he will move to repeal a rule limiting greenhouse gas emissions from existing power plants, assuring them, “The war against coal is over.” Speaking at an event in Hazard, Ky., with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Pruitt said his agency will publish the new proposed rule today. “Tomorrow … I’ll be a signing a proposed rule to withdraw the so-called Clean Power Plan of the past administration, and thus begin the effort to withdraw that rule,” Pruitt said. A 43-page draft of the proposal, which was obtained by The Washington Post and other news outlets last week, argues that the agency overstepped its legal authority in seeking to force utilities to reduce carbon emissions outside their actual facilities to meet federal emissions targets. It does not offer a replacement plan for regulating emissions of carbon dioxide, which the Supreme Court has ruled that the EPA is obligated to do. Rather, the agency said it plans to seek

public input on how best to cut emissions from natural gas and coal-fired power plants. E PA spokes- Pruitt woman Liz Bowman said in an interview Monday that Pruitt chose to speak about his plans in Kentucky because coal workers have a direct economic stake in policies aimed at curbing emissions from coal burning. “He’s speaking directly to people in coal county about how the rule negatively affected the whole industry,” Bowman said. Reaction to the announcement was sharply divided, with environmental and public health advocates decrying it, and industry groups welcoming the move. “With this news, Donald Trump and Scott Pruitt will go down in infamy for launching one of the most egregious attacks ever on public health, our climate, and the safety of every community in the United States,” Michael Brune, the executive director of the Sierra Club, said in a statement. “He’s proposing to throw out a plan that would prevent thousands of premature deaths and tens of thousands of

power 10 percent and renewables 2 percent. The Clean Power Plan, which aimed to decrease the nation’s carbon pollution by about onethird by 2030, compared with 2005 levels, has long been subject to intense legal fights — and that much is unlikely to change. During his time as Oklahoma attorney general, Pruitt joined other opponents in suing the Obama administration, arguing that it did not have legal authority to force states to form detailed plans to reduce CO2 emissions from such sources as coal-fired power plants. Pruitt sided with industry officials who insisted that EPA’s regulations would unfairly force power plant owners to shut down or essentially subsidize competing clean-energy industries. Environmental groups and other supporters argued on the side of the Obama White House, saying the administration had standing under the Clean Air Act to put in place the effort, which they called a much-needed measure to help nudge the nation toward cleaner sources of energy and improve public health. Killing ‘Clean Power’

Trump demands could halt deal on ‘Dreamers’ IMMIGRATION President Trump has told congressional leaders that his hard-line immigration priorities must be enacted in exchange for extending protection from deportation to hundreds of thousands of young immigrants, many of whom were brought to the U.S. illegally as children. Trump’s list of demands includes overhauling the country’s green card system, a crackdown on unaccompanied minors entering the country, and building his promised wall along the southern border. In a letter to House and Senate leaders released by the White House late Sunday, Trump also said he wants new measures to crack down on “sanctuary cities,” which don’t share information with federal immigration authorities. Many are policies Democrats have said explicitly are off the table and threaten to derail ongoing negotiations over legislation protecting young immigrants known as “Dreamers.” Under President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which Trump ended last month, they had been given a reprieve from deportation and the ability to work legally in the country. In a joint statement, Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer said Trump’s list of proposals failed “to represent any attempt at compromise.” JILL COLVIN (AP)

Game 4 matchup Nationals and Cubs starting pitchers have combined to allow five earned runs and 13 hits over 37 innings in the NLDS. Here’s a look at the starters tonight as the Nats try to avoid elimination. (EXPRESS)

NLDS GAME 3 | CUBS 2, NATIONALS 1

Crushed by a blooper

Rizzo’s go-ahead hit in the eighth inning pushes the Nats to the brink of elimination Anthony Rizzo exults after knocking in the go-ahead run off Oliver Perez.

JONATHAN DANIEL (GETTY IMAGES)

MLB PLAYOFFS For a moment Monday, it looked like Oliver Perez and the Nationals would survive in Chicago, like the leadoff walk Brandon Kintzler issued the Cubs in the eighth inning wouldn’t hurt, like the Nationals’ bullpen would not succumb again — at least not yet. But as Jayson Werth charged, Michael A. Taylor sprinted in and Trea Turner sprinted back, gravity pulled their collective hopes for escape to the ground, where the ball landed helplessly between them. Anthony Rizzo’s weak hit off Perez with two outs scored pinch-runner Leonys Martin and gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead in the game — and ultimately the same lead in the NL Division Series. The Nationals must fend off elimination tonight at Wrigley Field. The game will be shown on TBS at either 5:30 or 8, depending on the result of Game 3 between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, which ended after Express’ deadline Monday.

In three previous postseasons, Washington’s bullpen has taunted fans with encouraging showings, like the four scoreless innings it compiled in a Game 2 win Saturday. But it will be remembered most for misadventures, like the moment Sammy Solis could not keep a runner from scoring in the seventh inning Monday, when the Cubs tied the game on a single by Albert Almora Jr.

Handed a one-run lead and a runner in scoring position, Solis allowed Ben Zobrist — the only man to get a hit off Max Scherzer on Monday— to score. Handed a tie game in the eighth, Kintzler — one of the men the Nats acquired for such a moment — walked the leadoff man, who represented the go-ahead run. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo rebuilt the bullpen on

two elite relievers — Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle. Neither of them appeared in Game 3, a traditional approach in an era in which non-traditional bullpen choices seem to be the difference this time of year. Scherzer, coming off a hamstring injury that pushed him out of his normal front-of-therotation spot, lacked his usual aura for much of the game. Not until the later innings did he begin to stomp. But he had a no-hitter through 61 /3 innings against the defending World Series Champions. Washington’s only run came after Kyle Schwarber dropped and kicked a ball around the left-field corner, allowing Daniel Murphy to reach base ahead of Ryan Zimmerman, who drove him home in the sixth. T he Nationa ls had on ly three hits all day. They drove starter Jose Quintana’s pitch count to 96 over 52/3 innings, but could not score an earned run. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NATIONALS

Tanner Roark 13-11, 4.67 ERA

The Wilmington, Ill., native is 3-1 with a 3.24 ERA in five games at Wrigley Field. In his lone postseason start — Game 2 of the NLDS last year against L.A. — the righty allowed two runs over 4⅓ innings. Current Cubs hitters have batted .215 against him.

CUBS

Jake Arrieta 14-10, 3.53 ERA

He hasn’t pitched for two weeks while he nursed an injured hamstring, but Arrieta said Monday his leg is a “nonissue.” In nine career starts against the Nats, the righty is 1-2 with a 5.48 ERA. Anthony Rendon has hit .364 against him in 11 career at-bats.

Comeback at Fenway sends Houston to ALCS Eighth-inning rally gives Astros a shot to win first league series since ‘05 MLB PLAYOFFS Justin Verlander outpitched Chris Sale in a relief role reversal of aces, and the Astros advanced to their first AL Championship Series by rallying past the Red Sox 5-4 in Game 4 of their playoff matchup Monday in Boston. Houston will open the ALCS on Friday, either at Cleveland or at home against New York. Game 4 of the ALDS between the Indians and Yankees ended after Express’ deadline Monday. Alex Bregman homered off Sale to tie it in the eighth, and Josh Reddick hit an RBI single off closer Craig Kimbrel later in the inning. Reddick’s go-ahead hit made up for him misplaying a fly ball into a home run in Game 3 to force a fourth game. The Astros last reached a championship series in 2005 as an NL team and were swept in the World Series by the White Sox. Carlos Beltran added to his legacy of postseason success with an RBI double in the top of the ninth to give Houston a 5-3 lead. The extra run was crucial because Red Sox rookie Rafael Devers opened the bottom of the ninth with an inside-the-park homer off Ken Giles. The ball

bounced off the wall above center fielder George Springer’s leap. Giles retired the next three batters for a six-out save. Verlander allowed just one hit: a two-run homer to Andrew Benintendi — the first batter he faced — that gave Boston a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Verlander wound up with the win in his first pro relief appearance. He’s now 7-0 since being acquired from Detroit. Verlander went 22/3 innings in relief of starter Charlie Morton.

Sale pitched 42 /3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits, and striking out six. On a rainy day at Fenway Park, Red Sox starter Rick Porcello allowed Houston’s eighth firstinning run of the series. The reigning AL Cy Young winner, who led the AL with 22 wins last year and the majors with 17 losses in 2017, gave up two runs in three innings, walking three and striking out four while allowing five hits. Giants’ Beckham to have surgery on left ankle

Dolphins assistant coach resigns after drug video

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will have surgery for his broken left ankle this week, the Giants announced Monday. “It’s safe to say his season is over,” coach Ben McAdoo said. Beckham had 302 yards receiving and three touchdowns in four games played. He was the last of four receivers for the 0-5 Giants who were knocked out of a 27-22 loss to the Chargers on Sunday. Dwayne Harris will have surgery today for a broken foot. As of Monday afternoon, Brandon Marshall was waiting to undergo further testing on an ankle injury. Sterling Shepard was listed as dayto-day with a sprained ankle. (AP)

Chris Foerster resigned as Miami’s offensive line coach Monday and said he was seeking medical help after a 56-second video surfaced on social media that appeared to show him snorting three lines of white powder. Hours after the video was posted on Facebook and Twitter, Foerster announced his exit with a written apology. “My sole focus is on getting the help that I need, with the support of my family and medical professionals,” it said. Foerster, 55, has been an NFL coach since 1992 and joined the Dolphins last year. He worked for the Redskins from 2010 to 2014. (AP)

GUINEA PIG ...

THINKSTOCK/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

Paleo pancakes

More people are drinking protein shakes — but the booster isn’t for everyone SUPPLEMENTS Did you think protein powder and protein shakes were only the domain of the Arnold Schwarzeneggers and Dwayne Johnsons of the world? These days, protein shakes and powders are used by diverse groups of people: athletes, postsurgery patients, the elderly, time-deprived Type A’s and teens. Protein is key in healing and restoring the body — not just muscle, but also bone, cartilage and blood — whether the breakdown is from high workout loads or from medical procedures, such as surgery or radiation. But that doesn’t mean we should all run out and buy tubs of powder. As with any food or supplement, there are upsides and downsides.

Pro: Powders can be quicker and easier than food Why are the elderly getting into protein shakes and powders? “Older Americans — they’re a population group that is losing muscle and yet they often don’t

have much of an appetite,” says Carole Havrila, a dietitian at the University of Virginia Health System. “It’s easier for them to drink their calories and protein.” Other groups that can benefit include busy teens (they can grab a shake and go — better than a candy bar) and athletes. “Building muscle takes planning,” Havrila says. “Ideally you eat every three hours, and the timing is particularly important right after a workout.” Athletes can’t fit in a homecooked, sit-down meal five or six times a day, says Elizabeth Brooks, a D.C. personal trainer, so powders are a quick fix.

Con: They’re lacking in nutritional balance “Is it better to get your nutrition from whole foods? Absolutely,” says Rebecca Mohning, a Washington-area dietitian. Whole foods often include fiber, which helps regulate the digestive system, and vitamins, which help boost the immune system.

Before bulking up … Instead of committing to one type or brand in a big — and often expensive — container, try a small packet-size portion of a specific protein powder to see whether the flavor and texture are agreeable. “Recommending a protein powder is like recommending shoes,” D.C. trainer Elizabeth Brooks says. “You have to go try them on and see what you like.” G.B.

“Whole foods are not hyperfocused on one nutrient like protein powders are,” Mohning says. Another downside of protein shakes is that because they are liquid, they might not feel filling initially and could cause some people to consume too many calories. And too much protein itself can cause harm to the kidneys.

Pro: They provide non-meat options for protein Vegetarians and vegans can have a hard time getting their daily quota of protein through regular food, and protein powders provide options. “Whey is the gold standard. It’s a complete protein,” Mohning says — it contains all

For Off Road DC’s 5th anniversary, classes are $5 Saturday (Capitol Hill) and Sunday (U Street)

nine essential amino acids. And how about for the vegans out there? (Whey is derived from milk.) Mohning suggests hemp, rice and pea protein for vegans.

Con: Questionable quality Dietary supplements are classified differently than food, and the Food and Drug Administration does not do independent reviews of them before they hit the market. “They can have additives you don’t need,” Havrila says, “and huge amounts of vitamins.” Too many vitamins can lead to nausea, hair loss and nerve damage. Havrila and Mohning suggest looking for brands that have been tested by third-party organizations, such as ConsumerLab.com and NSF International.

While it’s safe to say that cavemen did not eat pumpkin pancakes, that didn’t stop Birch Benders from putting together a paleo pumpkin spice pancake mix, which launched at Whole Foods last month and retails for $5.99. All you need to do to the mix — made with cassava flour, almond flour, coconut flour, dried pumpkin, eggs and monk fruit — is add water and cook. At first, the mix looks like wet sand and smells a bit like Play-Doh, but that changes when you start to cook. While the final product’s texture isn’t as fluffy as regular pancakes, it comes close, and the pumpkin spice flavor isn’t too overbearing. You can top the pancakes with honey and fruit to make the meal a little heartier. One package contains 10 twopancake servings; each serving is 140 calories. ZAINAB MUDALLAL (EXPRESS)

The takeaway Do you need protein powders? If your daily intake of protein — the government recommends about 50 grams a day — is met through whole foods, probably not. But if you do? “This is such a grab-andgo culture,” Havrila says. “Protein powders are an example of that — they’re quick and easy.” GABRIELLA BOSTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Q. I am in my early 30s and have lived with the same roommate for eight years. We were classmates in graduate school and have not been romantic, but I consider her family (especially since I am an only child whose parents live 300 miles away). Now she is thinking of moving in with someone she’s been dating for four months. He’s pressuring her somewhat and she has expressed doubts but also excitement at the idea. I think it’s a terrible move but I’m also scared to lose her. I want her to do what’s best but don’t know how to be unbiased. SAD You can’t be completely unbiased; that’s the nature of the beast when someone else is making a decision that happens to significantly affect your daily life. But it’s important you don’t overcompensate here. Yes, you have a vested interest in keeping her close. But she has expressed doubts, and a four-month relationship doesn’t exactly allow for tons of deliberation (with acknowledgment of my personal

hypocrisy). The best you can do is be honest about it — your potential bias, your sadness about her leaving, your concerns about her doubts — but emphasize that acknowledging your feelings is not the same thing as urging her to take a certain path. That decision belongs to her only. Tell her the most important thing to you is that she does what’s best for her — and that you’ll find a way to stay close no matter where she lives.

of shame about physical intimacy. I think she enjoys it, but she feels guilty afterward that we’re not married, like she is betraying her very conservative upbringing. I love her and we have talked about getting married. She thinks that will make physical intimacy more enjoyable for her. But I’m not sure. The idea of spending my life with someone who is unhappy after every time we are intimate makes me feel hopeless. WONDERING ABOUT THE FUTURE

So, you “think she enjoys it.” Is there pressure — overt or subtle — from you? If the choice was hers alone, do you think your bedroom activity would be the same? Don’t put Marvin Gaye on again before figuring this out with complete honesty. Even if it is her choice, caution is wise. A wedding band won’t make negative schemata about sex go away, even if they seem on the surface to be about the lack of said wedding band. The lifelong feelings she’s been carrying probably go much deeper. This need not be a deal-breaker, and maybe marriage will lessen the conflicts. But you must be prepared for them to linger, and she must be prepared to do some work if that happens — work there’s actually no reason to wait for, when she could use the help now. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of “Psychology: Essential Thinkers, Classic Theories, and How They Inform Your World.”

Can Hollywood change? PERSPECTIVE Mere days after The New York Times broke the bombshell story that Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein had for decades sexually harassed actresses, assistants and other employees, he was fired Sunday from the movie studio he started with his brother. This seems like a swift and sweet comeuppance, especially after his bizarre and halfhearted apology that began with the flawed logic that he “came of age in the ’60s and ’70s, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different.” It’s possible to imagine a scenario in which these allegations came to light yet Weinstein remained employed. That happens all the time. But this case was different, mainly because of one very important source: Ashley Judd, who recounted to The Times that, in her early days, Weinstein tried to persuade her to give him a massage or watch him shower. She had attended what she thought was a business meeting only to find a powerful man in a hotel room wearing nothing but a bathrobe. The fact that Judd came forward is hugely important. In recent years, actors have started opening up about the horrors of the “casting couch” and the harassment and abuse they’ve endured. But few have named names, even iff tthey’ve h y’ve attained he

The stories have ranged from degrading to truly horrifying: Thandie Newton recounting how, when she was a teen, a director filmed up her skirt during an audition, then shared the footage with his friends; Megan Fox recalling her excitement to meet Hollywood legends, only to have them proposition her; Zoe Kazan talking about the producer who asked her gross, pointed questions about her sex life, then laughed it off as a joke. Corey laug Feldman has also talked about Feld

Weinstein’s Kennedy Center event nixed Harvey Weinstein won’t be chatting with Kennedy Center chairman David Rubenstein on Nov. 2 in what was planned as the next installment of Rubenstein’s interview series, “Profiles in Creativity.” The event was canceled days after a New York Times article chronicled allegations of sexual harassment made against Weinstein. Ticket holders will receive a full refund and the chance to purchase tickets to Rubenstein’s next event in the series before the general public. (TWP)

the abuse he endured as a child and the fact that his friend and co-star, the late Corey Haim, was raped at 11 years old. And yet, in each of these stories, and so many more, the guilty parties have been protected by anonymity. Obviously, coming forward is not easy. Those who make public claims about sexual abuse face shaming and disbelief, not to mention professional blackballing. And for what? In a lot of cases, the men accused receive no punishment. Roman Polanski continues to direct movies; Arnold Schwarzenegger still gets acting gigs; our own president has admitted to groping women without consent. The New York Times story revealed another actress who was Weinstein’s victim. According to the article, “Scream” star Rose McGowan was one of at least eight women whom Weinstein settled with after abuse claims. McGowan has been vocal on Twitter following the news dump, particularly calling out those who continue to remain silent rather than condemn Weinstein. She also wondered how quickly the paradigm might change if bigger stars were more forthcoming about the toxic culture in Hollywood. Weinstein’s firing could represent a very real change, thanks to a group of women who went on the record with all the details. Retribution isn’t a sure thing when people name names, but one thing is certain: Justice never comes when people don’t. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

After 15 years, Shania Twain is still on top Afte

Shania Twain’s “Now,” the country-pop country singer’s first studio album since 2002’s “Up!,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart last week. According to Nielsen Music, the album — Twain’s second No. 1 — topped the list with 137,000 equivalent album units sold, outpacing Tom Petty’s “Greatest Hits” album. That album rreturned to the chart at No. 2 following the legendary singer’s death on Oct. 2. (EXPRESS) Will Smith, Tom Holland to lend voices to animated comedy “Spies in Disguise”

‘Spielberg’ flips the lens on the famed director FILM The Steven Spielberg portrayed in Susan Lacy’s satisfyingly comprehensive 2½-hour HBO documentary “Spielberg,” which debuted Sunday and is now available to stream, is a wideopen book. It turns out that everything you’d want to know about Spielberg is front and center in his blockbusters: childhood fears (“Jaws”); ostracization and parental divorce (“Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial”); his disavowal and later acceptance of being Jewish (“Schindler’s List”); his reconciliation with his father (“Saving Private Ryan”); his reactions to 9/11 (“Munich,” “War of the Worlds”). Spielberg talks about personal baggage and how it surfaces on-screen. Dozens of other sources supply their own observations, including his 100-year-old father, Arnold; his mother, Leah, who died at 97 in February; his siblings; peers, longtime collaborators, actors and film critics. The film also features a thrilling, chronological examination of his movies that gives shape to the definition of the Spielbergian style. “Spielberg” coasts mainly on afterglow and continued output, providing example after example of its subject’s many contributions to the art of filmmaking. And it offers the pleasant reassurance that, at 70, Spielberg considers his work far from finished. HANK STUEVER (TWP)

He will never really go away A press release offering James Woods’ Rhode Island lake house for sale included news that the actor was retiring, but Woods told The Washington Post it was a mistake. “It’s just funny,” Woods said. “My agent said, ‘Are you retired?’ I said, ‘I don’t think so, am I?’ ” He added that his real estate agent had read him a draft of the release, but “he was not paying attention” and “didn’t hear ‘retirement.’ ” (AP/EXPRESS)

“Yeah, we’re not gonna raise a--holes. There’s enough a--holes in this world. We don’t need to contribute.”

Stars assemble to take pretty pics Actresses Jennifer Lawrence, Laura Dern, Jessica Chastain, Margot Robbie, Tessa Thompson, Riley Keough and Cicely Tyson and producer Kathleen Kennedy are featured on eight different covers of Elle’s Women in Hollywood issue, in which they share insights on the industry. Thompson said she used to feel she “had to fit into a box. The one-dimensional girlfriend or the sassy black friend — those weren’t going to work for me.” Dern added that she’s “starting to play women who just don’t know how to do it — they’re not girls, but they haven’t figured it out, still. That’s so relatable!” (EXPRESS)
