The owners of the Albuquerque, N.M., house that served as Walter White’s home on “Breaking Bad” are putting up a 6-foot iron fence to keep out fans of the show who trespass constantly. “We feel like we can’t leave because when we do, something happens,” Joanne Quintana, whose mother owns the house, told KOB4 this week. British paramedics said a man almost died when a fish he had just caught jumped down his throat. Medics called to a pier in Boscombe, England, on Oct. 5 found a man in cardiac arrest. He had put a 6-inch Dover sole over his mouth as a joke, but it jumped down his throat, blocking his airway. A paramedic with forceps removed the fish, but it took six tries because its barbs and gills kept getting stuck. The man, 28, fully recovered. (AP)
The Iowa State Patrol said a motorist pulled over in Des Moines after a pursuit told state troopers that he wanted to be chased because it was on his bucket list. He apparently refused to halt around 7:30 a.m. Thursday when a trooper tried to stop him for a violation on Interstate 80. The 10- to 15-minute chase ended after he left the interstate. That’s when the 46-year-old Des Moines resident shared his bucket list story with troopers. (AP)

It’s been a slow process, but fall color is spreading down off the mountain peaks as we head into the third week of October. Here are a few of the best fall colors destinations in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, based on the latest Foliage Network report. ANGELA FRITZ (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Acadia National Park
Davis is located in northeast West Virginia, next to Blackwater Falls State Park and Canaan Valley. As of Monday, foliage in this region — and farther south into the Monongahela National Forest — ranged from “high color” to “past peak.” The tops of the mountains may be overcooked, but lower elevations will be booming with color.
The historic town on the far eastern tip of West Virginia should begin to explode with color soon, if it hasn’t already. Harpers Ferry is a particularly iconic location for leaf peeping, with the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers merging where West Virginia meets Virginia meets Maryland. Hillsides and historic bridges make this location even more picturesque.
While the trees in parts of New England have already been scoured, upstate New York appears to be in good shape, according to the Foliage Network and the state’s Department of Economic Development. As of Monday, the Catskills were in high color, but they also had only “moderate” leaf drop, which means the color is more likely to be on the trees than on the ground.
It’s looking like this weekend will be capital-P prime fall color viewing in Acadia National Park, on Mount Desert Island in Maine. The park has a wide variety of natural features, including forests, lakes, beaches and Cadillac Mountain. And while you’re there, you might as well head over to the town of Bar Harbor to partake in the lobster.

Boom leaves many behind
GAITHERSBURG, MD.
More than 30 students evaluated for bee stings
THE DISTRICT The booming and increasingly dynamic District economy is leaving the city’s longtime black residents behind, according to a study released Thursday that examines African-American employment, population and housing trends in the nation’s capital. The Georgetown University report, which culled data from several recent studies, found that more than half of all new jobs in the District from 2010 to 2020 will require at least a bachelor’s degree, although only 12.3 percent of black residents in 2014 had graduated from college. The average white household has a net worth of $284,000, while the assets of the average black household are just $3,500. While striking, the findings largely mirror those of other recent studies. As the city becomes wealthier, more young and affluent residents are moving in, raising housing prices and pushing longtime black residents out of the city. In 2015, the population of black residents in the District — which decades ago garnered the nickname “Chocolate City” — dipped below 50 percent for the first time in 60 years. The Georgetown report traces the inequities in the District today to discriminatory practices that once kept black residents out of the economy. It also provides recommendations for the city to help strive for greater equality. “One of the contributions of this report is how much it puts in one place both the history of the city and redlining and school segregation and connecting it to how those impacts play out today,” said Ed Lazare, executive director of the D.C. Study: Longtime black residents are not seeing gains as District thrives
D.C.’s strong economy has raised incomes overall, but the median income for black households has remained flat.
Policy Institute, whose work is cited extensively in the study. “That half of all black households in D.C. have assets of $3,500 or less — that’s virtually nothing, and it’s probably a reflection that housing discrimination years ago kept them from owning homes.” The report indicates that one reason black Washingtonians are being left behind is that after the devastating 1968 riots, many businesses moved to the suburbs. It also noted that black residents were often “redlined,” the practice of banks and loaning institutions refusing to lend to business owners in communities with large minority populations. “Aspiring black businesspeople were unable to fill the vacuum simply because they could not secure a line of credit to open and maintain small businesses, stores, dry cleaners, restaurants and other outlets,” the report states. The report recommends that the D.C. Chamber of Commerce and city agencies create a database of minority businesses that would “outline opportunities and

procedures for small-business loans and training aids.” Local universities, the report says, should offer courses in minority business development. The report traces the history and effects of gentrification in the city and says that there is not enough affordable housing for the residents who need it. There are 43,000 District residents who qualify as “extremely lowincome,” which means a family of four making less than $32,000
a year. (Ninety-one percent of “extremely low-income” families are African-American.) Beginning in the 1950s, wealthy and middle-income families started fleeing cities for suburbs, leaving poor people by themselves in city centers. Now that wealthier residents have moved back to cities, rent increases have left longtime residents unable to afford their homes. The report recommends building more affordable housing in newly expensive neighborhoods such as Columbia Heights and NoMa. And, it says, the city should intervene before poorer neighborhoods become unaffordable for longtime residents. “In these communities, policies should offer a path to eventual homeownership, enabling individuals to eventually purchase a unit at an affordable price,” the report states. “Rentto-own housing is beneficial because it creates personal equity for individuals and helps lift residents from poverty.” PERRY STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

local CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. Two newly filed lawsuits against the white nationalists and others who descended on Charlottesville, Va., during a summer rally aim to prevent the violent chaos that unfolded from happening again. One of the lawsuits was filed Thursday in Charlottesville Circuit Court on behalf of the city, local businesses and neighborhood associations. It accuses organizers of the August “Unite the Right” rally, leading figures in the white nationalist movement and their organizations, as well as private militia groups
and their leaders, of violating Virginia law by organizing and acting as paramilitary units. It doesn’t seek monetary damages but asks for a court order prohibiting “illegal paramilitary activity.” “Touted as an opportunity to protest the removal of a controversial Confederate statue, the event quickly escalated well beyond such constitutionally protected expression,” the lawsuit says. “Instead, private military forces transformed an idyllic college town into a virtual combat zone.” Separately, 11 residents injured

Cal Fire forester Kim Sone inspects damage on Thursday at homes destroyed by wildfires in Santa Rosa, Calif.
Teams look for bodies in Calif.’s charred ruins At least 29 people have been killed as wildfires remain uncontained CALIFORNIA Search and rescue teams, some with cadaver dogs, started looking for bodies Thursday in parts of California wine country devastated by wildfires, authorities said, sounding a warning that more dead were almost sure to emerge from the charred ruins. At least 29 people have died and some 3,500 homes and businesses have been destroyed by the blazes, which were well on their way to becoming the deadliest and most destructive in California history.

Sonoma County Sheriff Robert Giordano said officials were still investigating hundreds of reports of missing people and that recovery teams would soon begin conducting “targeted searches” for specific residents at their last known addresses. “We have found bodies almost completely intact, and we have found bodies that were nothing more than ash and bones,” the sheriff said. Some remains have been identified using medical devices that turned up in the scorched heaps that were once homes. “There have been IDs in this case, in a pile of ash and bone, where there was a piece of metal left from somebody’s surgery, like a hip replacement, with an
ID number that helped us identify the person,” he said. An estimated 25,000 people have been driven from their homes by the flames, officials said. A few left behind cookies for firefighters and signs reading, “Please save our home!” Winds up to 45 mph were expected Thursday in areas north of San Francisco and stronger, more erratic wind gusts were forecast for Friday. Those conditions could erase modest gains made by firefighters. “We are not out of this emergency. We are not even close to being out of this emergency,” Emergency Operations Director Mark Ghilarducci told a news conference Thursday.

CRIME Police detectives in New York City and London are taking a look into sexual assault allegations against Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein now that some 30 women have accused him of inappropriate conduct. New York Police Department spokesman Peter Donald said Thursday that investigators are trying to determine whether there were any additional complaints involving Weinstein. That includes reviewing police files to see if any women previously reported being assaulted or harassed by him. So far, no filed complaints have been found, he said. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information on Weinstein to contact the department. Also Thursday, British media reported that London police are investigating an allegation of sexual assault involving Weinstein. London’s Metropolitan Police force said it had received an allegation of sexual assault from the Merseyside force in northwest England. Merseyside police said the allegation was made Wednesday and concerns “an alleged sexual assault in the London area in the 1980s.” Some 30 women told The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine for recent stories that Weinstein had sexually harassed or sexually assaulted them. Undercutting Obamacare Trump orders rewriting of some insurance rules as a way to undermine the Affordable Care Act
U.S. withdraws from the U.N.’s cultural agency
ALEX WONG (GETTY IMAGES)
POLITICS Frustrated by health care failures in Congress, President Trump directed his administration Thursday to rewrite some federal insurance rules as a beginning of renewed efforts to undermine Obamacare, the program he’s promised to kill. “With these actions, we are moving toward lower costs and more options in the health care market,” Trump said before signing his directive in the Oval Office. Trump said he will continue to pressure Congress to repeal and replace former President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Some experts said the White House plan could undermine coverage on the ACA’s insurance marketplaces, particularly for people with health problems. That would happen if healthy people flock to lower-cost plans with limited benefits. Other experts said Trump’s proposals appear to be modest and would have limited impact. The steps the president outlined Thursday will take months for the federal bureaucracy to finalize in regulations. Experts said consumers should not expect changes for next year. One of the main ideas from the administration involves easing the way for groups and associations of employers to sponsor coverage that can be marketed across the land. That reflects Trump’s long-standing belief that interstate competition will lead to lower premiums for consumers who buy their own health insurance policies, as well as for small businesses. Those “association health plans” could be shielded from

some state and federal insurance requirements. But, responding to concerns, the White House said participating employers could not exclude any workers from the plans, or charge more to those in poor health. Other elements of the White House plan include: Easing current restrictions on short-term policies that last less than a year, an option for people making a life transition, from recent college graduates to early retirees. Those policies are not subject to current federal and state rules that require standard benefits and other consumer protections. Changes won’t be fast Status quo for 2018: Experts say the executive order won’t affect 2018 premiums, which are expected to be higher in many states for people buying their own policies. Possible legal challenges: State attorneys general and state insurance regulators may try to block the administration in court if federal regulations are seen as a challenge to state oversight rules. New kinds of plans: Sponsors would have to be found to offer and market the new association plans, and insurers would have to step up to design and administer them. (AP)

as was initially feared. White House officials said that over time the new policies will give consumers more options. Democrats are bracing for this new effort by Trump to dismantle Obamacare, this time with the rule-making powers of the executive branch. Staffers at the departments of Health and Human Services, Labor and Treasury have been working on the options since shortly after the president took office. On Capitol Hill, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Trump “knows very little” about health care policy or legislation. She said she was unfamiliar with the details of the executive order, “but I do know it’s a sabotage of the Affordable Care Act.” But Sen. John Barrasso, RWyo., said Trump is taking bold action to give patients “freedom and flexibility to choose the health care plan that works best for them.” RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR (AP)
UNITED NATIONS The U.S. said Thursday it is pulling out of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization because of what Washington sees as its bias against Israel and need for “fundamental reform.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel planned to follow suit. While the Trump administration had been preparing for a likely withdrawal from UNESCO for months, the announcement Thursday by the State Department rocked the agency’s Paris headquarters, where a heated election to choose a new chief is underway. The outgoing UNESCO leader expressed her “profound regret” at the decision and tried to defend the reputation of the agency, best known for its World Heritage program to protect cultural sites and traditions. The U.S. stopped funding UNESCO after it voted to include Palestine as a member state in 2011, but the State Department has maintained a UNESCO office and sought to weigh in on policy behind the scenes. The State Department said the decision will take effect Dec. 31, 2018, and that the U.S. will seek a “permanent observer” status instead. Netanyahu said Thursday that Israel would also withdraw from the agency, saying it had become a “theater of the absurd because instead of preserving history, it distorts it.” MATTHEW LEE AND THOMAS ADAMSON (AP)

Trump: Aid is not ‘forever’ PUERTO RICO President Trump lashed out at hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico on Thursday, insisting in tweets that the federal government can’t keep sending help “forever” and suggesting the U.S. territory was to blame for its financial struggles. His broadsides triggered an outcry from Democrats in Washington and officials on the island, which has been reeling since Hurricane Maria struck three weeks ago. San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, with whom Trump has had a running war of words, tweeted that the president’s comments were “unbecoming” to a commander in chief and “seem more to come from a ‘Hater in Chief.’ ” The debate played out as the House passed, on a sweeping 353-69 vote, a $36.5 billion disaster aid package that includes assistance for Puerto Rico’s financially strapped government. House Speaker Paul Ryan, RWis., said the government needs to ensure that Puerto Rico can “begin to stand on its own two feet” and said the U.S. has “got

federal commitment to the island’s recovery. But Trump’s tweets Thursday raised questions about whether the federal government would remain there for the long haul. He tweeted, “We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!” In a series of tweets, the president added, “electric and all
infrastructure was disaster before hurricanes.” He blamed Puerto Rico for its looming financial crisis and “a total lack of accountability.” The tweets conflicted with Trump’s past statements on Puerto Rico. During an event last week honoring the heritage of Hispanics, for example, the president said, “We will be there all the time to help Puerto Rico recover, restore, rebuild.” Democrats said Trump’s tweets were deplorable. “It is shameful that President Trump is threatening to abandon these Americans when they most need the federal government’s help,” said Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, the second-ranking House Democrat. After years of economic challenges, Puerto Rico was already in the process of restructuring much of its $74 billion in debt before the hurricane struck. Puerto Rico lost population and jobs after Congress eliminated special tax breaks in 2006, making it more difficult to repay its debts. Yet lenders continued to extend credit to Puerto Rico despite its economic struggles, while pension costs strained Puerto Rico’s government and its infrastructure deteriorated. Kelly: ‘This is the hardest job I’ve ever had’ POLITICS White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, making his first public appearance before journalists, said Thursday that he is neither frustrated in his job nor planning to depart. Taking the lectern in the White House briefing room, Kelly sought to dismiss reports that he has been frustrated working for President Trump. “Although I read it all the time pretty consistently, I’m not quitting today,” Kelly said. “I don’t believe — and I just talked to the president — I don’t think I’m being fired today. And I’m not so frustrated in this job that I’m thinking of leaving.” Kelly continued: “I would tell you, this is the hardest job I’ve ever had. This is, in my view, the most important job I’ve ever had. I would offer, though, it is not the best job I’ve ever had.” That, he said, was serving as an enlisted Marine. A four-star Marine Corps general, Kelly took over as Trump’s chief of staff on July 28 and has enforced new order and disciplined processes in what had been a chaotic West Wing. People close to both Trump and Kelly have said there have been tensions as the two men adjust to working with each other, but Trump has repeatedly praised his chief’s performance — even predicting last weekend that Kelly would stay on the job for seven years, until the completion of the president’s second term. WEEK 6 PREVIEW
Don’t be the first to lose
REDSKINS VS. 49ERS | 1 P.M. SUNDAY, FOX
Hard worker returns with new uniform
NFL For the 42nd time, Pierre Garcon will play a regular-season game at FedEx Field on Sunday. All but one of the first 41 came as a member of the Redskins, and the respect for the new 49ers receiver has not abated since he traded his burgundy and gold for scarlet and gold in the offseason. Garcon will play his first game against the Redskins since they opted not to re-sign him after he spent five seasons with Washington. Although he’ll wear a different uniform, the impact the 10-year veteran left in the locker room still resonates with his former teammates. “If you want to be successful in this league, watch Pierre Garcon work,” wide receiver Ryan Grant said. The effort Garcon gave behind the scenes was consistently on
display during games, an aspect Grant said rubbed off on him “tremendously” during his first three years in the NFL. Garcon ran crisp routes and was often on the receiving end of crucial catches for the Redskins. In 74 games, Garcon stands ninth in franchise history in receptions (376), 10th in receiving yards (4,549) and 12th in touchdown catches (21). While there was interest in bringing Garcon back, the 49ers offered him a five-year deal worth $47.5 million, with $23 million during the first two seasons. That was enough to reunite Garcon with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, who was his offensive coordinator in Washington in 2012 and 2013. “When you give guys money to come places, I want to make sure that you give money to the people who are going to do things the right way and are going to play the way you demand,” Shanahan said on a conference call. “Pierre is a perfect example of that.”

San Francisco’s Garcon built a legacy on effort in 5 years with Redskins

A five-year deal worth up to $47.5 million lured Pierre Garcon to the 49ers after he racked up the ninth-most receptions in Redskins franchise history.
Representing Haiti Rookie Redskins cornerback Fabian Moreau never played with Pierre Garcon in Washington, but he admires him because of their shared Haitian heritage. Moreau this week said Garcon “opened the door” for Haitians in the league and recalled how Garcon carried Haiti’s flag on the field with the Colts following a massive earthquake in 2010. M.T.
Garcon had his best season as a pro under Shanahan in 2013, recording a franchise-record 113 receptions for a career-high 1,346 yards. It was one of two years, along
with last year, when Garcon topped 1,000 yards in a season. Garcon has quickly established himself as a reliable 49ers target. Through five games, he leads the team in receptions (28) and receiving yards (379) in a passing game that ranks 20th in yards per game (221.8). “He is still one of the top possession-type receivers there is in football,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “He is really good after the catch. That’s the one thing we really have to make sure, [that] we tackle well when he gets the ball in his hands out in space, because he can really run after the catch.” MASTER TESFATSION
The 49ers outscored the Colts 17-7 in the fourth quarter Sunday to force OT. They also outscored the Rams 19-7 in the fourth period in a shootout Sept. 21.
2 Go over the middle Safety Eric Reid and linebacker Reuben Foster are both battling injuries and could be absent or limited. The Redskins need to put pressure on their spots.
1 Defend the deep ball Brian Hoyer’s arm my not terrify the Redskins, but Marquise Goodwin’s speed should. The former Olympic long jumper is averaging 17.4 yards per catch this year.

Court moves to impose NFL ban
A federal appeals court Thursday cleared the way for the NFL to impose a six-game suspension on Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott over domestic violence allegations, siding with the league in a fight over its ability to punish players. The court in New Orleans set aside an injunction blocking the ban and ordered a district court in Texas to dismiss Elliott’s case against the league. Further appeals are likely. MLB PLAYOFFS The Yankees of the mid- to late1990s have their own mythology. Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and the rest of the dynastic team seem, through the lens of the present, to have emerged as a fully formed colossus. But general manager Brian Cashman has a different perspective, because he witnessed them come together. “That team,” Cashman said, “was young, too, at one point.” The common refrain says this year’s Yankees team has arrived ahead of schedule. Maybe that’s true in part. But for Cashman and the rest of the Yankees — both the Baby Bombers and ancient pinstripers such as CC Sabathia and Brett Gardner — they have arrived, period. “ ‘Arriving early’ implies some guarantee of arriving in the future,” Cashman said. “I’ve been around the block long enough to know, listen, you just seize the moment.” The Yankees won’t be wideeyed overachievers when they face the Astros in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series on Friday night (8:08, FS1). hoist the trophy later this month. They have a powerful lineup, a blend of youth and gutty experience and — most important — a bullpen that makes them perhaps the most dangerous team left. When Luis Severino fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of the wild-card game against Minnesota, the bullpen recorded the remaining 26 outs and allowed just one run. The unit also closed out Game 5 for 42/3 innings. Over six playoff games, Yankees relievers have allowed seven earned runs in 282/3 innings while striking out 42. “It’s the best I’ve ever seen,” Sabathia said. “We’ve got four or five closers down there.” T he Ya n ke e s m ay b e a
wild-card team, but they are part of the raft of “superteams,” to use Cashman’s phrase, in the playoffs. They finished the season with the second-best run differential in baseball, behind only the Indians, and won 91 games. They have matured behind closer Aroldis Chapman and a monstrous bullpen. Their starting pitching surged in the ALDS, with inconsistent Masahiro Tanaka throwing bowling-ball splitters, Severino bouncing back in a Game 4 victory and Sabathia whiffing nine in Game 5. If their starters continue to pitch into even the middle innings, they can beat the Astros. ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Cavs accept ‘new standard’ Best start in 10 years shows Virginia’s growth with coach Mendenhall

Young coaches use AAC teams to move on up DANIEL SANGJIB MIN (RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH VIA AP)
CAVALIERS In coach Bronco Mendenhall’s quest to build a winning football program at Virginia, the biggest assist he has received has been the buy-in from the players who knew the old way wasn’t working. As junior linebacker Chris Peace remembers, the movement started in January, after the Cavaliers finished 2-10 in Mendenhall’s first season. Micah Kiser, a redshirt senior linebacker and the ACC’s leading tackler the past two seasons, started peppering his conversations with teammates with the word “standard.” When Peace spoke to the team in August, he took Kiser’s premise one step further, and “the new standard” became the mantra for what has been a surprising turnaround season for Virginia. The Cavaliers (4-1, 1-0 ACC) are off to their best start since 2007, and will visit North Carolina (1-5, 0-3) on Saturday seeking their fourth straight win, and second in a row on the road. Not bad for a team that only last season ended a 17-game road losing streak. Mendenhall said the new standard represents everything he and his coaches tried to instill since they arrived. Now that the team has given it a name, he believes the foundation is being set.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall and the Cavaliers are on a three-game winning streak after going 2-10 in his first season.
“I think that involvement equals ownership, and there’s no great team that can be coachdriven and be sustainable,” he said. “So it’s great to have upperclassmen or older players recognize that, and now it’s coming from them, not me — that’s a lot more powerful.” At Virginia, history has shown that success this week guarantees nothing next week. In 2014, a 4-2 start had the Cavaliers talking bowl game for the first time since 2011. They went 5-7. “I’ve been on a team that was 4-2 but didn’t go to a bowl game, so it doesn’t mean anything,” Kiser said.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Virginia senior linebacker Micah Kiser leads the ACC in total tackles per game with 11 and is tied for second in the league with five sacks. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)
It’s a message Kiser shares over and over, especially with younger teammates like sophomore linebacker Chris Moore. “I can’t be here for that long and go through the same thing,” Moore said. “I just can’t do it. I hear that and I take it to heart.” Thinking not about a bowl game, but only of the Tar Heels, is the road to change, Mendenhall said. “One game or one win or one loss doesn’t determine the outcome of a season,” he said, “but yet the teams that are able to focus on the next game, cliche as it is, like it’s the only game, have the best chance.” HANK KURTZ JR. LSU atoned for a stunning loss to Troy by upsetting Florida on the road last week. Kerryon Johnson, left, leads the nation with 12 rushing TDs, but his Auburn squad has lost eight straight in Baton Rouge.
The Utes are coming off a threepoint loss to Stanford and have a huge defensive line featuring NFL prospect Lowell Lotulelei. A banged-up USC offensive line will try to keep QB Sam Darnold clean.
The Sooners suddenly look vulnerable after a 38-31 loss to visiting Iowa State last week. After flirting with an upset at USC earlier this year, Texas could break through in the Red River Showdown. G.H.

Virginia at North Carolina 3:30 p.m. Saturday, NBCSWA+ STORYLINE: The Cavaliers haven’t won in Chapel Hill since 2009 — the last time they beat the Tar Heels — but UNC has struggled in a rebuilding year with a defense that’s allowing 33 points per game. Freshman QB Chazz Surratt has thrown a pick in three straight games for UNC.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL When No. 25 Navy plays at Memphis on Saturday (3:45 p.m., ESPNU), coach Ken Niumatalolo will be matching wits with a buzzy coach who is relatively new to the conference and frequently mentioned as a candidate to move into whatever flashy job opens next at a powerconference program. The same goes for the week after, when Navy (5-0) will host Central Florida. And again three weeks after that, against SMU. Mike Norvell, above, of Memphis (4-1), Scott Frost of Central Florida and Chad Morris of SMU represent the new normal in the American Athletic Conference, a league that in five seasons of existence has become a proving ground for rising coaching talents. Last season, AAC coaches filled slots at Texas, Oregon and Baylor. In 2015, Justin Fuente left Memphis after two years for a job at Virginia Tech. This year, Frost and Norvell could be ripe for the picking. Frost, 42, took over a program that went 0-12 before his arrival and led the Knights to a bowl game last season. This year, UCF (4-0) is ranked No. 22,and Frost has been listed as a potential candidate at Nebraska. Norvell, 36, is 12-6 overall as Fuente’s successor at Memphis. He started garnering buzz when the Tigers upset UCLA this year. Morris has SMU (4-2) off to its best start since 2011. All are firsttime head coaches. AVA WALLACE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Low Maintenance
HALLOWEEN Decor for Your Apartment
I
t’s almost the time for costumes, candy, and creepiness. Here are some easy, lowcost, and low-clutter decor options. These are also low-commitment options since taking your decor down and storing it often kills the fun!
Spider Web You can buy some black widow web on the cheap via Amazon and spread it all over your apartment (be sure to make it appear intentional, don’t run the risk of looking like you need to clean). Or you can also DIY it and make some webs from black trash bags (and more). Either way, a carefully constructed and strategically placed spider web can be a cute and spooky touch to keep your apartment looking festive during October, and you can easily toss it post-holiday if you wish.
Paper Bats Get yourself some black construction
paper and draw the outline of a bat, re-use your first cut out to measure more, and you’ve got some easy bat decor. You can tape these on your wall, string them up into a banner, or glue them to a pumpkin. Heck, you can even glue them to a stick and throw them into a bouquet or your favorite potted plant, and you’ve got some very eerie embellishments.
Velvet Pumpkin If you are anything like me, when you get real pumpkins, you forget to throw them away before they start to rot (ew). A few years ago, my dad got me a beautiful purple velvet pumpkin. It’s from Safeway, takes up minimal space, and is just enough decor for my apartment during the September to November months (it counts as both harvest and Halloween in my book). It’s also easy to store; I barely have to put it away since it looks so cute with my apartment’s color
scheme. The best news is that these babies start at $3.99! If you’re feeling crafty and ambitious, you can also make them.
Window Clings or Wall Decals Cheap and disposable, window clings are a quick way to say to the world, “I am celebrating Halloween!” Stick ‘em on your window for the month and toss them when the harvest season is over. No muss, no fuss. You don’t even have to go to the store to get them since Amazon has a fab collection. Bonus: NO CLUTTER.
Door Wreath Another cool DIY, a spooky door wreath is a low commitment and re-usable way to express your festive spirit! These can be purchased pre-made at almost any craft or home accessories store (HomeGoods,
Pottery Barn, etc.). If you miss the boat this year or just want to stock up for next year, I recommend checking clearance craft store sales post-holiday. Make sure door decor is management-approved at your apartment complex before getting too excited though.
Seasonal Bouquet Not interested in the openly ominous approach? Try one of my favorite subtle ways to celebrate autumn and Halloween: create a harvest bouquet. You can use and re-use a dried or silk flower arrangement or combine darker-hued flowers and plants for a spectral fall feel; plum purple calla lilies are one of my favorite choices for this time of year. If you choose the more subtle decor options like the plush pumpkin or harvest bouquet, it can do double duty and help you celebrate both Halloween and Thanksgiving! ■ By Elaina Hundley for Apartment Showcase

Equal partners: In ‘Marston,’ a good time is had by all I have not seen any interviews with Luke Evans about his role in “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women,” but I’ve gotten pretty good at predicting what questions celebrities will be asked repeatedly during press junkets. I will bet you a lunch at Taylor Gourmet that Evans has heard plenty of reporters ask some variant of “So how much fun was it to make out with two beautiful women at the same time?” Evans plays William Moulton Marston in the fact-based movie, which secondarily follows the invention of comic book icon Wonder Woman and primarily depicts William’s polyamorous relationship with wife Elizabeth
(Rebecca Hall, dark-haired and all angles) and Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote, angelically blonde and all soft curves). The three were partners beginning in the 1920s; after Marston’s death in 1947, Elizabeth and Olive remained together until Olive’s death in 1985. Outside the bedroom, the family dynamic is surprisingly traditional (well, traditional with a plus-one): William and Elizabeth work; Olive takes care of the kids (each woman had two of William’s children) and the house. Inside the bedroom it is seriously, surprisingly sexy. Why surprising? Wouldn’t a threesome automatically be sexy? Throw in some lingerie and a little light bondage — what could be unsexy about that? Well, plenty. Typically, heterosexual sex in movies

is a little routine. There’s some kissing. There’s a long panning shot of the woman’s leg. Maybe we get a glimpse of the guy’s butt. Depending on the rating, there’s a certain amount of thrusting and writhing, and then cut to the next morning, when she’s wearing one of his shirts while making breakfast. In most movies that depict sex, the camera functions the way a straight man’s eye would. That pan up the leg is really not for the women in the audience; the token shot of the man’s butt is. Male desire is at the literal center of the frame, often in the form of boobs. How “Professor Marston” writer-director Angela Robinson break the pattern of humdrum movie sex is both simple and innovative — the women’s

desire for and enjoyment of sex is entirely independent of William’s. Oh, he’s there and enthusiastically participating, but their pleasure is not defined by his, nor is it exploited by the camera. It’s about enjoyment, not objectification. When the (probably male) reporters inevitably ask Evans about how much fun it must be to have a cinematic threesome, their assumption is that the sex is primarily for him. He wants it; the women are there for it. I highly doubt either actress will be asked how much fun it was to occupy her corner of the triad; if anything, they’ll get leering questions about what it was like to kiss another woman. Hollywood has long hesitated to show women’s sexual desire or pleasure in any setting outside what ultimately serves men, either those inside the story or those sitting in the theater. When it comes to the sex in “Professor Marston,” everybody’s into it equally, everybody’s having a good time, and everybody goes home happy.

This fact-based legal drama takes the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) back to the 1940s, when, as a young attorney for the NAACP, he and another lawyer (Josh Gad) defend a black man accused of raping a white woman. “Marshall” avoids giving its subject the Great Man treatment, as Boseman plays Marshall with zero inkling of the giant he would become. ALAN ZILBERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘Happy Death Day’ PG-13, 96 min.
With “Happy Death Day,” director Christopher Landon and writer Scott Lobdell have tried out the concept of re-creating “Groundhog Day,” but as a horror movie about a college student who lives through the day she’s murdered, again and again. Sadly, the cycle makes it impossible to build tension, and the film proves that this clever notion is ill-suited to horror. PAT PADUA (TWP)

A misfit 6-year-old (Brooklynn Prince, right) creates her own fun under the watchful eye of Bobby (Willem Dafoe).
‘Florida Project’ tries to make a magic kingdom This slice-of-life drama infuses wonder into a world stricken by grief FILM REVIEW “The Florida Project,” Sean Baker’s exuberant, ungovernable ode to the innocence and resilience of childhood, takes place in a ramshackle, lavenderpainted hotel called the Magic Castle, a stone’s throw from Orlando’s Disney World. Along with its neighboring oxymoronically named fleabags, the Magic Castle evokes the American Dream, while denying it at every downbeat, threadbare turn. But it still possesses its share of enchantment. As “The Florida Project” opens, its spirited 6-year-old protagonist, Moonee (newcomer Brooklynn Prince), is busy leading her friends on a game of mayhem and mischief throughout the complex, which serves as cheap housing for her young mother, Halley (Bria Vinaite), and a handful of folks who

are struggling with addiction, homelessness, mental illness or simple bad luck. It’s a hardscrabble life, but Baker is determined to infuse it with wonder and its own brand of profane dignity. Baker, whose breakout 2015 film “Tangerine” was filmed entirely on an iPhone, trades that modest platform for lush 35mm film, fashioning a big, bright, improbably optimistic-looking canvas for a story steeped in heartbreak. The volatile, unreliable Halley, who resorts to prostitution when she can’t make weekly rent, is little more than a kid herself. Moonee’s street
hustles and street-urchin scams may look adorably spunky now, but they suggest a far less rosy future down the road. Baker doesn’t superimpose those judgments. Instead, he presents “The Florida Project” as a respectful glimpse of a part of contemporary life that is often invisible to mainstream society. While the impulse is admirable, it results in a film that veers close to the kind of aestheticized poverty porn that bedeviled such films as “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “American Honey.” Although Moonee is the nominal heroine of “The Florida Project,” it’s Bobby — Magic Castle’s patient, gently paternalistic manager, played by Willem Dafoe — who emerges as the moral center of a movie that pulses with life, if not hope. Dafoe delivers his finest performance in recent memory, bringing to levelheaded life a character who offers a glimmer of hope and caring within a world markedly short on both. With eight nods, Bruno Mars is the top nominee at the American Music Awards, while The Chainsmokers, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd all earned five nominations apiece. The nominations were announced Thursday for the fan-voted American Music Awards, with an all-male lineup for the top prize of artist of the year. Mars will compete against The Chainsmokers, Drake, Lamar and Sheeran. Justin Bieber, Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi received four nominations each, including favorite pop/ rock song for their hit collaboration, “Despacito.” Keith Urban leads country artists with three nominations. The show will broadcast live from Los Angeles Nov. 19 on ABC. (AP)
‘Christopher Robin’ can’t find its footing FILM REVIEW In the 1920s, A.A. Milne gave a world reeling from World War I gentle books inspired by his only child and the boy’s stuffedanimal friends. The British author rendered them in verse and prose, brimming with humor and nestled among perfect illustrations by E.H. Shepard. Such books as “When We Were Very Young” and “Winniethe-Pooh” were great gifts, but their success took a toll, as the well-intentioned, but flawed film “Goodbye Christopher Robin” aims to show. Christopher Robin Milne — called by his nickname, Moon, in the film — had a painful public childhood. His father felt guilt about that, and he saw his ambitions limited by “Pooh.” Inspired by Ann Thwaite’s 1990 biography of the author and the memoirs of Christopher Milne, the script, while well researched, is stuffed with more shifts in time and tone than it can gracefully handle. Domhnall Gleeson struggles with playing the writer as an introverted, shell-shocked veteran whose moods shift abruptly, and Milne’s wife, Daphne (Margot Robbie), is alternately portrayed as flighty, distant and affectionate. Though the film has moments of delight and even profundity, too often it stumbles. From the trivial to the serious — ranging from an awkward close-up of smudged makeup to character inconsistencies — director Simon Curtis just can’t pull the thing together. JANE HORWITZ (TWP)

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

McGowan says Weinstein raped her
‘Now that I’ve Instagrammed it, it’s real!’ Natasha Bedingfield and husband Matthew Robinson are expecting their first child. The singer shared the news Wednesday on Instagram, writing, “We can’t wait to embark on this amazing journey together.” Bedingfield also told Britain’s The Sun on Thursday, “Now the bump is starting to really show, it’s sinking in that this is really happening.” (EXPRESS)
After a brief suspension from Twitter on Wednesday, Rose McGowan claimed on the platform Thursday that disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein raped her. In a series of tweets, McGowan addresses Amazon chief (and Express owner) Jeff Bezos and says she told an Amazon Studios executive that “HW raped me.” McGowan says the executive told her it wasn’t proven and she said “I am the proof.” Page Six reports that McGowan sold a script to Amazon, then found out the studio was working with Weinstein. She claims her project was killed after she spoke out. The New York Times previously reported that Weinstein paid a financial settlement to McGowan in 1997. (AP/EXPRESS)

In a cover story for Us Weekly, “The Hills” stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag described the birth of their son, Gunner, earlier this month. “Spencer had [Los Angeles crystal shop] Crystalarium bring $27,000 worth of crystals in,” said Montag of the delivery room. Pratt, a longtime crystal enthusiast, added, “Gunner first saw his beautiful mother and then looked to his left and saw the most beautiful crystals.” (EXPRESS)
