Man falls asleep in dumpster, wakes up in a heap of trouble

A Nebraska man surprised his new bride with a wedding party Wednesday that featured several animals, including a camel, on “hump day.” All of the animals — three mini-donkeys among them — came from Scatter Joy Acres, a 26-acre ranch where Marcus Brown and Ruth Hillbran volunteer regularly, UPI reported. A man was uninjured but arrested after he fell asleep in a dumpster that was picked up and emptied into the back of a collection truck in Helena, Mont. The truck was picking up cardboard to be recycled. Police said the man was in the truck for only a brief time Tuesday. He got the driver’s attention by tossing out boxes and pounding on a wall of the vehicle. Police arrested the man after learning he was wanted on two warrants. (AP)

Baltimore defeats ‘fatberg’ BALTIMORE A 20-foot “fatberg” of congealed grease, flushable wipes and other unsavory stuff was removed Monday from a sewer pipe in Baltimore. The massive clog in a 2-footwide pipe under Lanvale Street was detected after recent sewage overflows. Removing it was no easy task, said Jeffrey Raymond, a spokesman for the Baltimore City Department of Public Works. The job — estimated to have cost as much as $60,000 — demanded water jets, a scraper and a vacuum truck to suck out the “fatberg” and surrounding debris. A bypass line also had to be constructed. “Think about a can of lard

anything but. Baltimore’s Department of Public Works posted a ghostly video of the mass on YouTube in late September, instructing residents to “safeguard Baltimore’s sewer system by canning the grease and trashing the wipes.”

Though the District has not encountered a high-profile “fatberg” like Baltimore’s, the city has taken action on the wipes. A law took effect on Jan. 1 regulating when such wipes can be labeled “flushable.” Dallas-based wipes manufacturer Kimberly-Clark has sued the District over the law, alleging that the D.C. law is unconstitutional because it tries to regulate businesses beyond the city. The law has faced pushback from Congress. Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., offered but later withdrew an amendment that would have blocked D.C. from using its funds to enforce the wipe law. As the battle over wipes goes on, one thing seems settled: the term “fatberg.” “It’s sort of the name that’s been adopted worldwide,” Raymond said. JUSTIN WM. MOYER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

local Deadly attack left three dead and three hurt in Maryland and Delaware HARFORD COUNTY, MD. Jose Hidalgo Romero, one of five people gunned down Wednesday in a Maryland workplace attack allegedly carried out by a fellow employee, had complained to his boss about abusive behavior by the co-worker long before the shooting, but no action was taken because the suspect was deemed to be “a good worker,” according to Romero’s brother. “He knew something was going to happen,” Noel Orellana said of Romero, one of three

employees killed in the shooting at Advanced Granite Solutions, a countertop compa ny i n Edge Prince wood, Md., about 40 miles northeast of Baltimore. In an interview Thursday, Orellana said that Romero, 34, had been looking for a new job for several weeks because he was afraid of the co-worker, identified by authorities as Radee Labeeb Prince, 37, who was arrested Wednesday after a day-long manhunt. Orellana quoted his brother as saying that Prince would punch people in the back and start fights at Advanced Granite, and that

employees met with an owner of the company to complain about the problem. According to Orellana, Romero said that the owner’s response was, “Leave him alone, he’s a good worker.” Prince had worked at the company for about four months, according to police. They said

that after Prince opened fire on his fellow employees shortly before 9 a.m., he drove 50 miles to Wilmington, Del., where he lived, and shot a sixth victim, an acquaintance, at a used-car dealership. That victim, wounded in the head and body, survived. The shooting in Delaware

occurred less than two hours after the gunfire in Maryland. In a Wilmington courtroom Thursday, Prince pleaded not guilty to four charges related to the shooting in that city, including attempted first-degree murder. Authorities identified the other employees killed in the attack as Enis Mrvoljak, 48, of Dundalk, Md., and Bayarsaukhan Tudev, 53, whose last known address was in Virginia, according to police. The two wounded workers who survived were hospitalized Wednesday in critical condition, police said. Their names were not publicly released. Man pleads guilty in fatal Metro stabbing of AU grad

A Prince George’s County man was sentenced Thursday to 40 years in prison for the death of his infant son, whom he beat to death and then buried in a shallow grave in the woods in 2016. Antoine Petty, 33, had pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree child abuse resulting in death in the killing of his 2-month-old son Antoine Flemons. Prosecutors cited a long list of encounters Petty had with child protective services when asking for the maximum term of 40 years. Geniece Petty, the baby’s mother, pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter. Her sentencing is set for December.

A District man admitted in court Thursday that he fatally stabbed an American University alumnus on a crowded Metro train more than two years ago. Jasper Spires, 21, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder while armed in the slaying of 24-year-old Kevin Sutherland. As part of the plea agreement, District prosecutors and Spires’ public defenders agreed to a prison sentence of 30 to 35 years. If Spires had gone to trial and had been convicted, he faced a maximum sentence of life without parole. The plea was welcome news for Sutherland’s family and friends, who have attended each hearing in the case. (TWP)

Ex-premier indicted on corruption charges

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello, left, meets with President Trump at the White House on Thursday.

Trump gives hurricane response a 10 out of 10 President meets with Puerto Rico’s governor, praises recovery work WASHINGTON President Trump on Thursday said the federal response to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico deserves a grade of 10 out of 10 as he met at the White House with Ricardo Rossello, the governor of the U.S. territory. “It would say it’s a 10,” Trump said, arguing that the destruction wrought by Hurricane Maria “was in many ways worse than anything people have ever seen.” “It went right through the middle of the island, right through the middle of Puerto Rico,” Trump said as Rossello sat by his side in the Oval Office.

Trump’s assessment was at odds with public polling — fewer than half of Americans approve of how he’s handled a succession of hurricanes this year — and the assessments of some local officials on the ground, including the mayor of San Juan. Rossello declined to give a numerical grade but said the White House thus far had answered “all of our petitions” in Puerto Rico, where much of the island remains without electricity weeks after the storm hit. “You responded immediately,” Rossello said when asked by Trump, “Did we do a great job?” But Rossello said the island still needs more resources, adding that was the reason he had come to Washington. “The reality is we still need

to do a lot more,” Rossello said. He also made a pitch for the federal government to “treat us equally.” During portion of the meeting opened to the media, Trump was joined by Vice President Pence; homeland security adviser Tom Bossert; administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Brock Long; and the director of the Office of Management and Budget, Mick Mulvaney. “I think we did a fantastic job, and we’re being given credit,” Trump said. Trump was asked if he would support making Puerto Rico a state. “Well, we’re not talking about that now,” he responded. “You’ll get me into trouble with that question.” JOHN WAGNER AND

Hill Montessori Magnet School in St. Paul, Minn., where Philando Castile, 32, had worked as a cafeteria worker before he was killed in a 2016 police shooting. But when Fergus, a professor, presented the project to her class at Metropolitan State University, it became clear that the $5,000 goal was low. By Thursday, the campaign had collected more than $84,000, which will be used to help not only J.J. Hill, but other local schools as well. (TWP)

nation+world Central government set to strip region’s power in unprecedented step BARCELONA, SPAIN The crisis over Catalonia’s quest for independence escalated Thursday, as Spain’s central government prepared to take the unprecedented step of stripping the wealthy region of some of its self-governing powers after its leader refused to abandon a push for secession. In his latest display of brinkmanship, Catalan President Carles Puigdemont sent a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy just minutes before a deadline set by Madrid for him to backtrack on his calls to secede.

verbatim

Puigdemont didn’t back down, however, and threatened to go ahead with a unilateral proclamation of independence if the government refuses to negotiate. “If the State Government persists in blocking dialogue and the repression continues, the Parliament of Catalonia will proceed, if deemed appropriate, to vote on the formal declaration of independence,” Puigdemont’s letter said in an English translation provided by the Catalan regional government. Spain’s government responded by calling a special Cabinet session for Saturday when it will set in motion Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution. That article allows for central authorities to take over all or some of the

powers of any of the country’s 17 autonomous regions. Regarded as the “nuclear option,” such a punitive measure

takes the standoff to another level. It probably will trigger outrage in Catalonia and could backfire by fostering sympathy for the independence movement, which polls suggest is supported only by about half of Catalans. Article 155 has never been used in the four decades since democracy was restored in Spain after the dictatorship of Gen. Francisco Franco. The article leaves it up to the national government to decide what specific measures to take. Officials say Madrid will almost certainly seize control of Catalonia’s regional police to ensure law and order is maintained, along with tightening its grip on the region’s finances. ARITZ PARRA

TECHNOLOGY Russian operatives used a fake Twitter account that claimed to speak for Tennessee Republicans to persuade American politicians, celebrities and journalists to share content with their own massive lists of followers, two people familiar with the matter said. The list of prominent people who tweeted out links from the account, @Ten_GOP, which Twitter shut down in August, includes political figures such as Michael Flynn and Roger Stone, celebrities such as Nicki Minaj and James Woods, and media personalities such as Ann Coulter and Chris Hayes. Independent researchers suspected it was Russian, and their work was confirmed Wednesday by two people familiar with the probe into the Kremlin’s meddling in the 2016 U.S. election. The spread of links from the account shows the remarkable reach of a disinformation campaign that harnessed the power of American celebrity and the immediacy of social media to propel messages further, faster and more cheaply than possible even a few years ago. “They were trying to influence influencers,” said Jonathan Albright, a research director at Columbia University. “They’re creating buzz. POLITICS White House chief of staff John Kelly delivered an extraordinary denunciation of a Democratic congresswoman Thursday, accusing her of politicizing what he called a “sacred” presidential effort to console the grieving loved ones of a slain soldier. Kelly, in an unexpected and emotional appearance in the White House briefing room, invoked the death of his own son, killed in Afghanistan in 2010, as he lashed out at Rep. Frederica Wilson of Florida, who earlier this week said that President Trump had been disrespectful in his condolence call to the family of Sgt. La David Johnson, who was killed during an ambush in Niger. Speaking slowly and forcefully, Kelly said he was “heartbroken” that Wilson overheard the conversation and used it to attack the president. “I was stunned when I came to work yesterday and brokenhearted at what I saw a member of Congress doing,” Kelly said. “It stuns me. And I thought at least that was sacred.” Wilson was in the car with the family of Sgt. Johnson when Trump called Tuesday. She said Trump had told Johnson’s widow that “you know that this could happen when you signed up for it ... but it still hurts.” Kelly said he was so upset by the congresswoman that he went

Kelly absolved Trump of blame, suggesting that the president did the best he could. “If you’re not in the family, if you have never worn the uniform, if you have never been in combat, you can’t imagine how to make that phone call,” Kelly said. Trump has emphatically rejected claims that he was disrespectful. But he ignited a storm of his own this week when he boasted about his commitment to calling service members’ next of kin and brought Kelly into the controversy by wondering aloud if President Obama had called Kelly after the death of the former Marine general’s son, Robert Kelly.

Gold Star recognition After White House chief of staff John Kelly’s dramatic opening statement recounting in detail what happens after a solider is killed in overseas combat, he took questions from reporters, asking first if any of them were Gold Star parents or siblings, meaning relatives of slain service members. When no one raised a hand, Kelly then said he would take questions only from those who knew a Gold Star family. (AP)

Kelly said Thursday that Obama had not called, but he made clear “that’s not a criticism.” “I don’t believe all presidents call. I believe they all write,” he said. Kelly did say that when Trump took office, he urged the president

not to make those family calls, saying, “I said to him, ‘Sir, there’s nothing you can do to lighten the burden on these families.’ ” But when Trump indicated he wanted to do so, Kelly revealed to him what General Joseph Dunford, now chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told him when his son was killed. Kelly recalled that Dunford said his son “was doing exactly what he wanted to do when he was killed. He knew what he was getting into. He knew what the possibilities were because we’re at war.” Kelly added that Dunford told him that “when he died, he was surrounded by the best men on this earth, his friends. That’s what the president tried to say to four families the other day.” JONATHAN LEMIRE AND CATHERINE LUCEY (AP)

COLORFUL SCIENCE

Flowers attract bees with blue halo

Some flowers use a trick of physics to attract bees for pollination. Bees are drawn to the color blue, but it’s hard for flowers to make that color in their petals. Some flowers produce a blue halo when sunlight strikes a series of tiny ridges in their thin waxy surfaces, according to a study by Cambridge University researchers published in the journal Nature on Thursday. The ridges affect how the light bounces back, changing the color that one sees. (AP)

LAPD investigating Harvey Weinstein after actress in L.A. accuses him of rape

NATIONAL SECURITY Amid the news reports of invisible “attacks” in Cuba that have harmed at least 22 American diplomats, intelligence agents and their spouses over the last year at Havana’s Hotel Capri, a growing list of private U.S. citizens are asking themselves if they also were victims. Chris Allen of South Carolina cut his trip to Cuba short in 2014 after tingling and numbness spread through all four of his limbs within minutes of climbing into bed his first night in the recently refurbished Hotel Capri. Allen’s illness lingered for months and cost him thousands of dollars in medical tests as his symptoms continued to recur, bewildering neurologists. He assumed he’d never identify the cause, until he heard of the alleged “attacks” on U.S. officials that left embassy staffers with their own inscrutable symptoms. The State Department has received reports of several citizens who visited Cuba and say they’ve developed symptoms similar to what embassy victims experienced. The government says it can’t verify their accounts, but the State Department did issue warnings last month noting that assaults have occurred at popular tourist hotels, and that the U.S. is in no position to guarantee anyone’s safety. While the U.S. hasn’t blamed anyone, President Trump said this week that he holds Cuba “responsible.” JOSH LEDERMAN (AP)

nation+world AFGHANISTAN The Taliban killed at least 58 Afghan security forces in another wave of attacks across the country, including an assault that nearly wiped out an army camp in the southern Kandahar province, officials said Thursday. The attack on the Maiwand army camp was late Wednesday and used two Humvees packed with explosives as suicide car bombs, Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said. The assault set off hours of fighting, killing at least 43 soldiers at a base where 60 were

stationed. Waziri said just two soldiers remained unharmed on the base, while six were missing. Ten attackers were killed, and the battle ended with the help of a U.S. airstrike. The Taliban issued a statement claiming responsibility for the assault. Elsewhere in Afghanistan, a Taliban ambush in the northern Balkh province late Wednesday killed six policemen, according to a police spokesman. Bradley Beal’s 25 points helped the Wizards win their opener, but he wasn’t happy with his shooting.

NFL WEEK 7

Nursing wounds

Beal knocks his accuracy in first game WIZARDS Following a season-opening 120-115 win over the 76ers on Wednesday night, Wizards guard Bradley Beal served as his harshest critic. “I think I played bad. I really do, I swear. ... I missed way too many free throws [and] missed way too many shots,” said Beal, who scored 25 points but shot just 35.3 percent from the field and hit 12 of 16 free throws. “I always feel like I have to do better and become a perfectionist. I still have a lot of work to do, but I’ll take a win.” Washington did not attempt as many 3-pointers as it would have liked, taking just 22 — and making just six — compared to 35 attempts by Philadelphia’s freewheeling shooters. The low numbers were partly due to Beal. Though he played a wellrounded game in grabbing six

rebounds and sending “the best lob that I’ve ever thrown in my life” to John Wall for one of his four assists, Beal shied away from the arc and attempted just four 3s, making one. Beal spent the final quarter shaky at the foul line. The Wizards led 115-113 with 20 seconds remaining in the period, and Beal had a chance to ice it but clanked his first free throw attempt. All four of his misses at the line were in the fourth quarter. Other than Beal’s fourth-quarter misses, the Wizards capitalized on their trips to the charity stripe. Washington hit 30 of 38 overall; last season, the team made 30 or more free throws only twice. One of Beal’s backups, newcomer Jodie Meeks, enjoyed a solid debut as a scorer off the bench. He had 14 points, standing out for a unit that couldn’t hold a nine-point lead in the second quarter and surrendered an eight-point cushion to start the fourth. “We were giving up too many

Injuries to marquee stars have had a ripple effect across the NFL, but the league gets to sell a Super Bowl rematch this week. Here are three of the most intriguing games.

Rookies await out West After hosting the Pistons on Friday night (9, NBCSWA), the Wizards embark on a four-game Western trip. They play Denver on Monday and visit No. 2 overall pick Lonzo Ball and the Lakers for a Wednesday game on ESPN. points in transition and then we were giving up too many 3s in that second quarter,” coach Scott Brooks said of the bench. “Overall, I’m pleased with them and they’re only going to get better.”

Marcin Gortat did his part to fight off the extinction of the traditional big man. With 16 points and 17 rebounds, he was the second franchise player since 1983 to post at least 16 and 17 in a season opener. “There’s a lot of young guys behind my back, trying to take my job,” Gortat said. “I’m trying to survive in this league.” Gortat said this with a laugh, but he played the night for a serious cause. Over the summer, Adam Wójcik, who played with Gortat on Poland’s national team, died of leukemia. Gortat honored his friend by scribbling “A.W.” on his shoes. CANDACE BUCKNER

Allen’s prognosis turns optimistic

A day after sources told The Washington Post that Redskins rookie starter Jonathan Allen would miss the rest of the season with a Lisfranc injury, a person with knowledge of the situation said Thursday that Allen may return this year. That development could allow him to miss just eight weeks if the Redskins use one of two designated short-term injured reserve spots for him. (TWP)

A final goodbye for RFK

THE DISTRICT First the baseball team left for Texas in 1971. Then, after more than three decades in Southeast Washington, the football team crossed the border for a new home in Maryland. In 2007, another baseball team moved away for sparkling new digs. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium has already bid farewell to the Senators, Redskins and Nationals. This weekend, the onetime nexus of Washington sports relinquishes its soccer team. On Sunday, D.C. United hosts the New York Red Bulls for the MLS club’s 347th and final match at RFK before relocating down the Anacostia River to Audi Field. It’s appropriate that the last professional sporting event at RFK is a soccer match. In addition to United, the stadium has held the home field for four North American Soccer League teams — the Washington Senators, Whips, Darts and Diplomats — and two iterations of the women’s Washington Freedom. The District has also been an unofficial home of the U.S. men’s national team, which has played more matches at RFK (24) than

any other stadium in the country. The women’s national team won all nine of its matches at RFK. “For me this is our national team stadium,” said Kyle Beckerman, a Crofton, Md., native who played for the U.S. men’s national team at RFK after attending a World Cup game there as an 11-year-old in 1994. “For me there’s always something unique and special about playing here.” In the only home it’s ever known, United is 184-98-64 over 22 seasons. As the league has trended toward soccer-specific

stadiums, D.C. has been home to an old-school outlier in MLS. “It’s got personality for sure. There’s still a little bit of romanticism around this building because of the history,” said coach Ben Olsen, who played at RFK for club and country. “I feel like I’m a small part of this building. I’m very lucky and humbled to have been part of the history of RFK.” Two miles east of the Capitol, the circular structure with a wavy roof opened in 1961 as District of Columbia Stadium. United’s history there started in 1996, when the stadium was

D.C.’s plans for RFK Washington’s convention and sports authority has presented a plan to residents to turn the RFK Stadium complex into a resource for the city. For a projected cost of $489.6 million, the city would transform the 190-acre plot by building three multipurpose fields, a market hall similar to Seattle’s Pike Place, a sports and entertainment complex, pedestrian bridges and a monument to Robert F. Kennedy. The land is owned by the National Park Service and could also be used for a new pro sports stadium. (EXPRESS)

already a well-established feature of Washington’s entertainment scene. For 56 years, sports fans and concertgoers have covered the parking lots with spilled beer and peanut shells. In 1966, the Beatles played there on their final tour and gave a news conference in the Senators’ clubhouse. On July 4, 1972, over 60 people were arrested at a rowdy Rolling Stones show. In June of 1995, Bob Dylan opened for The Grateful Dead in Jerry Garcia’s last show on the East Coast. RFK’s last major concert was on July 4, 2015, in celebration of the Foo Fighters’ 20th anniversary. The glory days of football at RFK, where the commute was convenient and the Redskins went 5-0 in NFC championship games, is still a common talking point for fans in the FedEx Field parking lot in Landover, Md. Don Dinan, a former member of the D.C. Stadium Commission, said the city was one or two key meetings away from keeping the team. “Then there was that infamous speech, and that meeting never took place,” Dinan said. At a rally at RFK on July 22, 1992, then-Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly called Redskins owner Jack Cooke a “billionaire bully” for the way he negotiated. The Redskins opened Jack Kent Cooke Stadium, which would become FedEx Field, in 1997. RFK survived to host baseball for three years after the Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals. In 1996, it began its run as home to D.C. United, which went 11-5 at home on its way to the first MLS Cup. On Sunday, as the United players walk out of a baseball dugout and onto the field, fans will rise from seats painted burgundy and gold, except for those in the upper deck that are painted white for home runs Frank Howard hit 50 years ago. One last time, the bleachers will bounce as thousands of scre a ms echo off c oncrete steeped in D.C. history. DILLON MULLAN (FOR EXPRESS)

Penn State running back and Heisman candidate Saquon Barkley, below, leads the nation with 217 all-purpose yards per game. But Michigan’s defense is No. 6 in the nation against the run (85.8 ypg) and No. 8 in points allowed (14.7 per game).

COLLEGE BASKETBALL When Anthony Cowan felt nerves swirling in his first road game as a freshman guard at Maryland last season, he leaned on words of encouragement from Melo Trimble, the All-Big Ten point guard next to him in the backcourt. “He would tell me things that happened before they happened,” Cowan said Thursday at Big Ten media day at Madison Square Garden in New York. “He would just say, ‘Stay calm and things would be OK.’ ” Now that Trimble is gone after three seasons — he went undrafted and was cut by the Timberwolves last weekend — Cowan must be a calming presence as the primary ball-handler. Coach Mark Turgeon thinks his sophomore point guard is up to the task. “Melo was a professional; he worked hard, he came early and stayed late. Anthony does that too,” Turgeon said. Trimble averaged 16.8 points and 3.7 assists last season for the Terps, who were picked in a media poll to finish in a tie with Michigan for fifth place this season. Michigan State is the early Big Ten favorite, and Spartans sophomore forward Miles Bridges was named the league’s preseason player of the year. Without Trimble, the Terps will spread the ball out to more players. That includes Cowan, who dished out 3.7 assists per game last season, and fellow sophomore guard Kevin Huerter, a 6-foot-7 lockdown defender who averaged 9.3 points, and 4.9 rebounds as a freshman. Sophomore forward Justin Jackson (6 feet 7) was named to the 10-player preseason all-conference team.

From left, Anthony Cowan, Justin Jackson and Kevin Huerter will be asked to expand their roles this season.

New coaches look to revive three Big Ten powers The three new coaches in the Big Ten this year all take over at schools that are projected to finish near the bottom of the standings in the 14-school conference. But, as commissioner Jim Delany told reporters Thursday at media day in New York, each arrives because of proven success elsewhere. Here’s a look at the situation each coach inherits. D.D.

Archie Miller Indiana

Miller replaces Tom Crean after taking Dayton to the NCAA Tournament four times in six years. Indiana was 15-18 last season and was picked by the media to finish ninth in the league this season. Senior guard Robert Johnson averaged 12.8 points last season.

Chris Holtmann Ohio State

After following Brad Stevens at Butler and posting a 70-31 record over three years, Holtmann inherits Thad Matta’s players. With forward Jae’Sean Tate (14.3 ppg, 6.4 rbg) back, the Buckeyes are picked to finish 11th after going 17-15 last season.

Brad Underwood Illinois

In four years as a head coach, he led Stephen F. Austin to the tournament three times from 2013-16. Last season, he moved to Oklahoma State and went 20-13. The Illini are picked to finish 12th and didn’t make the tournament the past four seasons under John Groce.

Saturday football: Maryland at No. 5 Wisconsin (noon, Fox)

Last season, the Terps (24-9, 12-6 Big Ten) lost 76-65 to Xavier in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland opens this season Nov. 10 vs. Stony Brook in New York. Jackson, who averaged 10.5 points and 6.0 rebounds last season, will be expected to expand his game to play more on the wing as a small forward who can run and pass or spot up and shoot. “It will be a big change from what you saw last year,” Turgeon said. “He’s an amazing scorer; he can score around the rim. He can really pass the ball.” According to Turgeon, ball movement should be a strength for a Terps team that has to collectively replace its biggest star. “I thought we have done a nice job the last three years of sharing the ball,” Turgeon said. “I think we have been fun to watch and fun to coach. Almost every [backcourt] player on our team, including Jackson, played point guard for their high school team.” DAVID DRIVER (FOR EXPRESS)

North Carolina at No. 14 Virginia Tech (3:30 p.m., ESPN2)

A one-point loss to No. 3 Georgia is the only blemish for the Fighting Irish. Junior Josh Adams averages 9 yards per carry to lead a Notre Dame running game that’s put up 308 yards per game. USC held off Utah for a 28-27 home win last week.

3

Syracuse at No. 8 Miami

3:30 p.m. Saturday, ESPN

Syracuse QB Eric Dungey has thrown for 297 yards per game and had three TD passes in an upset of then-No. 2 Clemson last week. The Hurricanes, who won their last two games by five points combined, allow just 18.6 points per game. (EXPRESS)

PROPERTY HIGHLIGHT

WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME EASY ON THE EARTH

I

f you want to go green and freshen up your home naturally, the tips below will have your apartment looking revived in no time.

1

Indoor Plants

Having a few plants indoors can help your air quality become cleaner over time by removing air-toxins that are common in most households. Go out on a limb and buy a few potted or hanging plants to not only improve your home’s air quality, but add a decorative touch as well.

2

Dust Like You’re Spring Cleaning Once a Week

3

Get an Air Purifier and a Dehumidifier

We all know how irritating dust can be, especially since it can accumulate anywhere in your home. Dusting on a weekly basis can improve the air quality of your home and will make your furniture and knick-knacks look brand new. When dusting, try using furniture polish or cleaning products that do not have harsh chemicals so you don’t add toxins to the air.

Purchasing an air purifier or a dehumidifier will help your home’s air quality improve within hours. A dehumidifier sucks

the moisture from the air, which decreases the chances of humidity and mold growth in your home. An air purifier will remove contaminants from the air and make the air in your home more comfortable and breathable. For those who have allergies, an air purifier will become your new best friend. Have a hot and humid bedroom? A dehumidifier will significantly cool down your room in no time.

4

Filter Your Tap Water

Drinking water straight from the tap isn’t exactly safe because you don’t know what is in your water. It’s better to filter your water with a Brita or mountable faucet filter if you prefer to use water straight from the faucet. A faucet filter allows the water to filter right before it goes directly into your glass, creating purified water that’s safe to drink. A Brita does the same thing, except the water filters in a pourable container that can be stored in your refrigerator for later use.

5

Store Food in Glass, Not Plastic

Have you been wondering why your food doesn’t stay fresh for at least a week in a plastic container? Plastic containers tend to make food soggy and not as fresh as it looked when

Photo: Simon Schlegl via Flickr

apartmentshowcase.com

you made it. Glass containers, on the other hand, make your food last longer and taste fresh.

6

Mats at Doorways

7

Check Your Home for Mold

Having a mat on each side of your main doorway(s) can help reduce dirt and outside contaminants that are tracked throughout the house. Have a “no shoes in the house” policy and have your guests take their shoes off right when they come in the door to keep your house clean, thus saving energy from running your vacuum.

See a stain in your shower or bathroom that is a pinkish tint or black? That is probably mold. You’ll want to clean it with Clorox, bleach, or other cleaning products that aren’t harsh on your home. Cleaning mold in your shower can be a start, but check throughout your house periodically for oddly-colored stains on the walls, and in places that are dark, cold, and have high moisture.

Don’t fret; this list is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to making your house more earthfriendly. ■ By Victoria Naranjo for Apartment Showcase

“Only the Brave” is based on the real story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

‘For Ahkeem’

A trek into the inferno ‘Only the Brave’ paints an emotional — and timely — portrait of wildland firefighters

FILM REVIEW As if on cue, “Only the Brave” arrives in theaters just as the catastrophic wildfires in Northern California seem to be winding down. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, from a screenplay by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer, the film is based on a 2013 GQ story about the Granite Mountain Hotshots, an elite crew of firefighters who experienced a harrowing tragedy in Yarnell, Ariz. Still, there’s plenty of joy in this story, which starts out like an underdog sports movie. The firefighting crew in Prescott, Ariz., led by the brooding, rugged Eric Marsh (Josh Brolin), is immensely capable. But because they haven’t yet been certified for top-tier “hotshot” status,

they’re relegated to mopping up the remnants of fires that other, more specialized teams have attacked at the front lines. Eric is a strategic genius when it comes to fire-suppression tactics that look, to the untrained eye, like random destruction. But when a snobby, dismissive hotshot team takes over and bungles his operation, the collateral damage is a whole town. Much of “Only the Brave” focuses on the Prescott crew’s quest for elite status as subplots bubble up around the edges. These include Eric’s sweet but strained relationship with his wife (Jennifer Connelly), a veterinarian who hates playing second fiddle to whatever fire happens to be burning nearby, and the story of

‘Only the Brave’ (PG-13, 134 min.) DIRECTOR: Joseph Kosinski STARS: Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, Taylor Kitsch IN A NUTSHELL: The film tells the true story of an elite group of wildland firefighters tasked with saving a town from a harrowing blaze.

Brendan (Miles Teller), a recruit who is struggling to put aside his past as a drug user and petty criminal after his ex-girlfriend gives birth to their daughter. There’s also breathtaking action, of course, broken up by amusing dialogue as the guys rib one another or dissect their

romantic conquests. The acting ensemble has a believable, brotherly chemistry, especially Teller and Taylor Kitsch, playing a troublemaker who initially teases Brendan brutally before the two warm up to each other, forming an adorable bond. “Only the Brave” is also surprisingly informative for anyone unacquainted with the art of fighting fire, delving into rivalries between those who battle wildfires and those who put out burning buildings. It also shows how comfortable these men are in extremely dangerous situations. This is a job for real heroes. The reminder of their sacrifice could not come at a more opportune time. Channing Tatum pulls movie from Weinstein Co.

Channing Tatum wrote Wednesday on Instagram that he will no longer develop projects with the Weinstein Co., Harvey Weinstein’s former company, including his movie about a boy dealing with the aftermath of sexual abuse. The film — which would have been the co-directorial debut of Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin — was based on Matthew Quick’s book “Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock.” (AP/EXPRESS)

“For Ahkeem,” a stark documentary portrait of a troubled teenager struggling to redirect her life, unfolds in the months before and after the 2014 police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. The events it depicts with such intimacy often occur with frustrating predictability, reinforcing destructive stereotypes. Though the story told here is an important one, it’s still tough to watch. ‘Faces Places’ PG, 90 min.

In the documentary “Faces Places,” director Agnes Varda and the French street artist JR discover a mutual fascination with people and their environments, and embark on a tour de France to see what they can see. This collaboration is a film of sheer joy, taking the shape of a road trip infused with equal parts whimsy and aweinspiring monumentality. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

Can you guess which one of these characters will wind up in a wheelchair and receive loving support from the other?

Now ‘Breathe’: Why do men get all the ‘disability films’? Now comes “Breathe,” about Robin Cavendish, a man who contracted polio in 1958. With his friends, Cavendish conceived of a wheelchair with a portable respirator, enabling him and other polio victims to leave the hospitals where they were expected to spend their lives. Andrew Garfield plays Cavendish and, while Garfield is a fine actor, he can’t shine in a movie so defined by the laziness of its genre. “Breathe” hits all of the story points you’d expect: vivacious youth, devastating illness, wish to die, decision not to die, standing up to skeptical doctors, inspirational (gag) life, triumph! We’ve all seen it before. What we haven’t seen is an awards-bait movie — cliched or not — about a woman with a physical disability. “Breathe” and the three films at the top of this column are about reallife men, but even if studios can’t dig up similar stories about women — and it might be a bit early for a Tammy Duckworth biopic — it is actually possible for Hollywood to produce movies that are, in fact, fictional. While men win awards for playing someone with a visible difference, women get recognized for playing the caregiver of said man. Felicity Jones got an Oscar nomination for her role in “The Theory of Everything”; Alicia Vikander took home the trophy for “The Danish Girl” (though Eddie Redmayne’s character was trans, not disabled, much of the movie followed the “disability film” rules). I won’t

“My Left Foot.” “Born on the Fourth of July.” “The Theory of Everything.” They all grabbed Oscar wins or nominations for the (able-bodied) actors who portrayed men with visible physical disabilities. In fact, disability is one of the easiest ways for men to get on awards lists, right up there with losing or gaining a lot of weight, portraying a character with mental illness or playing a gay man when you’re straight. Now let’s list all of the films — awards bait or not — featuring women with visible disabilities. … … … OK, let’s list the films we can think of about women with ANY disability. If you came up with “Children of a Lesser God,” which got Marlee Matlin a best actress Oscar, and 1962’s “The Miracle Worker,” which paid off similarly for Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft, you got the same answers as I did. Though my brain also came up with “that one about the blind ice skater” (“Ice Castles”) and “that one with the actress from ‘Dances With Wolves’ where she’s in a wheelchair” (“Passion Fish,” which did get Mary McDonnell an Oscar nomination). Seems like not only do physically disabled female characters rarely get on the shortlist for awards, they hardly even make it onto the screen.

‘Breathe’ (PG-13, 117 min.) DIRECTOR: Andy Serkis STARS: Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Tom Hollander, Hugh Bonneville IN A NUTSHELL: The fact-based story of an adventurous young couple who seek out a full and passionate life together after one of them is struck down by polio.

defined by their relationship to their men. In the real world, women with disabilities are often seen as wheelchair first and woman second. Movies cannot fix that, of course, but at least they could provide some sort of visibility for an underrepresented segment of society. Do I want the same tired disability porn for women that men get? No. When it comes to men with disabilities, Hollywood has to do better. When it comes to women, it has to at least do something. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

FILM REVIEW Meet Dina Buno, a lively, tartly good-natured middle-aged woman with a tousled bob, a devoted fiance named Scott and a disposition of uncommon candor and self-awareness. Dina also happens to be autistic. And as the indomitable title character of Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles’ intimate documentary, she offers an irresistible subject: Funny and forthright, she allows the filmmakers into her apartment and life in suburban Philadelphia with startling aplomb. Focusing on the sometimes fraught weeks leading up to her wedding, “Dina” judiciously addresses the events of Dina’s past that led her to this moment, intercutting those revelations with scenes of Dina coping with her own emotional and cognitive difficulties, as well as obstacles faced by Scott, who has Asperger’s syndrome and is preparing to leave his parents’ home for the first time. Santini, Sickles and their cinematographer Adam Uhl build in discretion, filming Dina and Steve from a distance and giving them dignity in the form of space and environmental context. “Dina” offers viewers an honest, touching, optimistic portrait of people embracing intimacy and honesty the best way they know how. Those struggles have always been the stuff of the best cinematic love stories. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The week’s best movie previews

‘Black Panther’

‘I Love You, Daddy’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Feb. 16

EXPECTED RELEASE: Nov. 17 (limited), Dec. 1 (wide)

SUMMARY: Black Panther got one of the best entrances in “Captain America: Civil War,” and now T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) takes center stage as the hero — and the king of Wakanda, a country so technologically advanced it makes Tony Stark ragingly jealous. And the movie looks so good we are ragingly excited. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Louis C.K. wrote, directed and stars in the story of a comedy writer who understandably freaks out when his 17-year-old daughter (Chloe Grace Moretz) begins dating a definitely-not-17year-old filmmaker (John Malkovich). The comedy is shot in black and white, which is how you know it’s not only funny, but arty. K.P.K.
