They came by tractor trailer and by plane, with the poshest arriving in crates fork-lifted onto cargo planes and flown in from Belgium. In all, there are 500 of them currently in Chinatown, here to compete in the Washington International Horse Show. Between now and Sunday, they will take part in dozens of events at Verizon Center — which melts its ice just once a year, for this occasion — and help rack up an estimated $10 million for the local economy. Last year — just as in 2013 — some 26,000 people went to see them, the most since 2006. This year, even more are expected. The six-day event has been held in D.C. since 1958 and at Verizon Center since 2000. There are three types of jumping competitions, each requiring 16 jumps. “These are world-class riders, Olympic riders, coming in from all around the world,” said Dave

Once the ice is melted, the flooring — a 1,200-ton mixture of sand, limestone and carpet-like fibers — is installed for the show. The ice must be melted, organizers said, to provide a stable surface for the horses. It also ensures that the ice will not be contaminated for hockey games. “Is it easier to not [melt the ice]? Sure, but obviously it’s special for us,” Touhey said. “The melting of it is actually the easy part. The rebuilding is what takes time.” The last competition, the pony finals, end at 4 p.m. Sunday. The dirt flooring will come out right after that, and a crew will clean the floor overnight. By Monday afternoon, employees will begin making ice again, a process that takes 48 hours, just in time for Wednesday’s Capitals game. “It’s a big production,” said Vicki Lowell, president of the Washington International Horse Show. “It’s a logistical challenge: Everything is minute-by-minute until the end.” ABHA BHATTARAI

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission did not want to host the gun show that is expected to draw up to 2,000 firearms enthusiasts to Upper Marlboro on Saturday. But attorneys for the organization concluded it had no choice. So it imposed safety restrictions that a spokesman for the National Rifle Association said are extremely rare — if not unheard of: No live ammunition allowed on the premises of the Show Place Arena, where the show will take place. No dry-firing weapons. All firearms must have trigger locks. And at least five park police officers must be on duty providing security. “I think they are trying to make it as hard as possible for a legal gun show to be held in the county,” said Dan Blasberg, president of Maryland Shall Issue, a gun rights advocacy organization. The arena in Prince George’s County, which is owned and operated by the park and planning commission, hosted gun shows annually until 2013. That year, in the wake of the mass shooting at a school in Newtown, Conn., the agency issued a moratorium on

Vincent DeMarco, president of Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence, called the ban on live ammunition a “terrific safety precaution.” Lamplugh, the owner of the company that is running Saturday’s show, puts on 10 other shows elsewhere in Maryland. He said he agreed to the stringent restrictions imposed by the park and planning commission because he knows he has to assuage fears. “We are letting them push us some,” Lamplugh said. “We want to show that we’re not monsters, and we can run a decent show.”

An American University leader responded to protests over racist messages posted online Thursday, deploring the language and sharply criticizing Yik Yak, the social media site where the comments appeared. A group of students has been protesting after racist comments were seen on social media, concerned they were being ignored by the administration. To draw attention to the issue, the students shared screenshots of conversations on Yik Yak, an app that allows people within a community to trade messages anonymously online, with the hashtag #TheRealAU, and demanded mandatory classes to teach students how damaging their comments can be.

The Firearms Safety Act set tough guidelines for gun dealers and purchasers that require licensing, fingerprinting and background checks for handgun buyers. But the legislation said nothing on regulating gun shows. And so when Appalachian Promotions owner John Lamplugh sought to rent the 49,500-squarefoot arena for a gun show this fall, agency officials put their own restrictions in place. And in addition to the $12,000 rental fee, the agency tacked on fees of up $5,000 for security provided by park police officers. The concerns, said general counsel Adrian Gardner, center

American killed in Iraq in raid on ISIS prison COUNTERTERRORISM Believing that captives of the Islamic State held in a compound in northern Iraq faced “imminent mass execution,” dozens of U.S. special operations troops and Iraqi forces raided the site Thursday, freeing approximately 70 Iraqi prisoners. The raid cost the life of one U.S. service member, the first American killed in combat in Iraq since the U.S. campaign against ISIS began in 2014, officials said.

He was not publicly identified pending notification of relatives. Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said the target of the raid was a prison near the town of Hawija and that it was undertaken at the request of the Kurdish Regional Government, the semi-autonomous body that governs the Kurdish region of northern Iraq. The New York Times said an Iraqi in the Hawija area had said 11 young men related to Iraqi police or military forces had

After House GOP votes, young leader will face much bigger challenges

ALL HARDWARE COMES WITH OUR 1 YEAR WARRANTY WWW.PCRETRO.COM

ANALYSIS Republicans got their man: Paul Ryan looks certain to be the next speaker of the House, following an almost-endorsement from the House Freedom Caucus on Wednesday night. His ascension will set off celebrations in much of the GOP, as the Wisconsin Republican is clearly a major star in the party and is now finally willing to take the job. Once the high fives fade, however, the massive task of truly bringing House Republicans together begins. The speaker’s vote, while the easiest of the challenges before Ryan, contains a kernel of the larger problems he is likely to face. The Freedom Caucus didn’t technically endorse his bid for speaker, which would have required 80 percent of its membership. Rather, it offered a super-majority recommendation, meaning that at least 65 percent of its members wanted Ryan as speaker, meaning the most conservative element of the party couldn’t unite behind him. What will happen when the fights are over the annual budget or raising the debt ceiling or immigration policy? It seems

unlikely that a Freedom Caucus will abandon its convictions solely because it likes Ryan. That will leave Ryan with a choice: Does he work with Democrats to pass legislation or does he hold his ground and see what happens if the debt limit isn’t raised? By all accounts, Ryan, while perhaps more conservative by nature than his predecessor, John Boehner, is cut from a similar cloth when it comes to how Congress should work. “We need to move from being an opposition party to being a proposition party,” Ryan told reporters earlier

this week. Aside from his annual budget proposals, he is best known as the lead Republican negotiator in the 2013 bipartisan budget deal. There’s little reason to assume that as speaker Ryan would abandon his approach to working with people with whom he disagrees. But, recent history would suggest that if he wants to keep the job, he would be wary of being seen as open to making deals with Democrats from the get-go. For Republicans, getting Ryan into the speakership is a major victory. But, will it be a lonely one? CHRIS CILLIZZA

Questions with no end A marathon grilling of Clinton brings out panel infighting, but few new details about Benghazi

Libya’s problem with the new Benghazi movie

GETTY IMAGES

POLITICS More than nine hours after it began, a House committee’s questioning of Hillary Rodham Clinton had provided few new details about the 2012 attacks on American installations in Benghazi, Libya — and no clear victory for Republicans seeking to trap Clinton in an admission of bad judgment. The sharpest questions of the day came from Republicans Jim Jordan, of Ohio, and Mike Pompeo, of Kansas. Jordan accused Clinton of misleading the public about the 2012 attacks in order to help President Barack Obama’s re-election prospects. “You picked the [account] with no evidence. You did it because Libya was supposed to be . . . this great success for the White House,” said Jordan, who charged that Clinton had blamed the attacks on reaction to an anti-Muslim video, knowing that was false. “Where did the false narrative start? It started with you, madam secretary,” Jordan said. After his questioning period ended, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., the chairman of the House special committee set up to investigate those attacks, gave Clinton a chance to respond. “I wrote a whole chapter about this in my book, ‘Hard Choices.’ I’d be glad to send it to you,” Clinton said. “I think that the insinuations that you are making do a grave disservice” to those in government. Clinton said she had not intended to mislead, but instead had sought to make sense of confusing intelligence reports from Libya and other places where protesters had overrun American diplomatic installations. Americans in Benghazi deeply. “It’s a very personally painful accusation” that she had misled the public, Clinton said. “Having it continued to be bandied around is deeply distressing to me. I would imagine that I’ve thought more about what happened than all of you put together. I’ve lost more sleep than all of you put together. I’ve been wracking my brain about what could have been done, or should have been done.” By 5:15 p.m., the hearing seemed to have lost steam. Republicans seemed to hurt their own cause at times. Several spent their 10-minute periods on oddball questioning: One pressed Clinton repeatedly about an email exchange between two State Department staffers that Clinton said she did not know. Others loudly remarked that Clinton was reading notes passed from aides, a common practice at hearings. And, repeatedly, the Republicans were baited by Democrats into a time-wasting fight over

Speaking deliberately Hillary Clinton seemed to be speaking slower than usual Thursday in her 16-minute opening statement before the House Benghazi Select Committee. She was. Simple math shows she spoke at a rate of about 110 words per minute. Why is that notable? During her opening statement to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Jan. 23, 2013, she spoke at nearly 150 words per minute. It’s all speculation, but she might have slowed down to seem more serious; last time, critics said she was cold and even cavalier. (TWP)

whether the committee was a partisan tool, and if any of them should be there at all. Just before lunch break, Gowdy and several Democrats got into a loud argument on whether to release interview transcripts. “I don’t know what this line of questioning does to help us get

to the bottom of deaths of four Americans,” Clinton said. For Clinton, her performance at the hearing was the continuation of a remarkable turnabout. In her opening statement, she sought to portray herself as above political questions and to portray the panel as secondguessing the necessary risks taken by U.S. diplomats abroad. Clinton began her testimony by naming the four dead. She said she’d known Stevens, recommended him for the job, and met his casket when it returned to U.S. soil after the 2012 attacks. “Nobody knew the dangers of Libya better [than Stevens]. A weak government. Extremist groups. Rampant instability,” Clinton said. “But Chris chose to go to Benghazi because he knew that America had to be represented there at this critical time.” DAVID A. FAHRENTHOLD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The hearing was still in progress at Express’ deadline.

FILMS Even before the film’s release, Michael Bay’s new action movie is stirring controversy among government officials and residents of Benghazi, Libya’s second-largest city and the birthplace of the uprising against dictator Moammar Gadhafi. The film, “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” depicts the events of the September 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate that killed four Americans, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. It hits theaters in January. Benghazi locals and officials slammed “Transformers” director Bay for his unreleased film, calling it an “insult” to the nation. The film follows a group of ex-military security contractors trying to save American lives in a dusty and hostile Benghazi. The trailer shows the contractors entering the city and quickly turns to shots of gun-wielding militants. “We will not allow the American media to destroy our reputation [using] the film industry,” Benghazi resident Mohamed Kawiri said in a Facebook post shared by hundreds calling for a boycott of the “cheap” movie. The film portrays the contractors, “who actually failed to secure the ambassador ... as heroes,” Libya’s Culture and Information Minister, Omar Gawaari, exclaimed. Bay, Gawaari said, “turned America’s failure to protect its own citizens in a fragile state into a typical action movie all about American heroism.” RAMI MUSA (AP)

In GOP rebuke, Obama vetoes defense bill

A man confessed to shooting and killing a 4-year-old girl while arguing with her father on an Albuquerque freeway, police said, without offering more details on what led to the apparent road rage. Tony Torrez, 32, was arrested Wednesday and admitted to shooting Lilly Garcia while she was riding in the backseat of her father’s pickup truck with her 7-year-old brother a day earlier, police said. He has been charged with murder, assault, child abuse and other crimes. (AP)

President Barack Obama vetoed a sweeping $612 billion defense policy bill Wednesday in a rebuke to congressional Republicans, and insisted they send him a better version that doesn’t tie his hands on some of his top priorities. In an unusual veto ceremony, Obama praised the bill for ensuring the military stays funded and making improvements on military retirement and cybersecurity. Yet he pointedly accused Republicans of resorting to “gimmicks.” (AP)

Navy dismisses findings that officer retaliated against whistleblowers MILITARY The Navy is poised to promote the admiral in charge of its elite SEAL teams and other commando units even though Pentagon investigators determined that he illegally retaliated against staff members whom he mistakenly suspected were whistleblowers. Rear Adm. Brian Losey was investigated five times by the Defense Department’s inspector general after subordinates complained that he had wrongly fired, demoted or punished them during a vengeful but fruitless hunt for the person who had anonymously reported him for a minor travel-policy infraction. After conducting separate, yearslong investigations that involved more than 100 witnesses and 300,000 pages of emails, the inspector general upheld complaints from three of the five staff members. In each of those cases, it recommended that the Navy take action against Losey for violating whistleblower-protection laws, documents obtained by The Washington Post show. The Navy, however, dismissed

the findings this month and decided not to discipline Losey, a preeminent figure in the military’s Special Operations forces who once commanded the clandestine unit known for killing Osama bin Laden. He now leads the Naval Special Warfare Command. The decision clears the way for Losey to pin on a higher rank as a two-star admiral. He was selected for the promotion in 2011, but it was put on hold for four years as the inquiries unfolded. Critics say the previously undisclosed investigations into one of the Navy’s top SEALs underscore the weakness of the military’s whistleblower-protection law and how rarely violators are punished. Watchdog alert: Secret Service asleep at work A federal watchdog on Thursday sent the U.S. Secret Service a formal warning that its overworking of employees is jeopardizing security — citing the discovery that two Secret Service officers were asleep at their posts, according to three government officials familiar with the findings. The inspector general who oversees the Secret Service issued a management alert, a formal designation that indicates investigators have found a problem so urgent or sweeping that it requires swift attention from senior management. The management alert stems from a routine check this August of alarms and communication equipment at facilities protected by the Secret Service, the three officials said. In the wake of radio failures when a fence-jumper got inside the White House in September 2014, auditors with the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General rode around to various sites with Secret Service staff. They found one officer at an embassy post and another stationed at the White House complex who appeared to be asleep while on duty. Secret Service leaders strenuously objected Thursday to Inspector General John Roth’s conclusions that these incidents show a broader problem in the agency’s work schedules. CAROL D. LEONNIG

3 THINGS TO WATCH

TONI L. SANDYS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

It won’t get any easier

The Redskins are 2-4 this season despite having a halftime lead in five of six games.

BUCCANEERS AT REDSKINS | 1 P.M. SUNDAY, FOX

Slow out of the break

REDSKINS Halftime of an NFL game is a chance for players to rest up, for coaches to coach up, and for the occasional adjustment that can pay dividends down the stretch. For the Redskins (2-4), it’s when they do some of their worst work. Heading into Sunday’s game against Jameis Winston and the visiting Buccaneers (2-3), Washington has a serious problem it needs to fix: how to avoid giving games away in the third quarter. So far this season, coach Jay Gruden’s club has been outscored 46-3 in that period. In five of their six games, the Redskins have been ahead at halftime, but they’ve lost three of those. “Obviously, whatever we’re doing,” Gruden said, “has not been good enough. “The big thing is awareness. Letting them know that this is what the last six games have been like in the third quarter.

... ‘Here are the stats and we have to do something about it.’ I don’t think we stop practice in the middle of practice, go to the locker room and come back out and pretend it’s halftime. But the issue’s there.” Last week, for example, Washington took a 13-10 lead over the Jets into halftime. One 17-0 quarter later, the Jets led 27-13 and were on their way to a 34-20 victory. The next day, Gruden declared that he was going to hold a staff meeting to discuss various aspects of that very topic: What have the Redskins been doing wrong in third quarters? How can they prepare better? What can be changed? “After the game, that’s the first thing we said: ‘We’ve got to find a way to start coming out in second halves and do the same things we were doing in the first half,’ ” linebacker Perry Riley Jr. said. “I think this second half, this week, you’ll see a

WR PIERRE GARCON VS. CB ALTERRAUN VERNER With the Redskins’ running game a mess the past few weeks, more pressure may be put on the passing attack on Sunday. If that’s the case, Garcon will have to come up big with deep threat DeSean Jackson expected to miss another game. different team.” Gruden made the case that the most striking thing about it is that his players seem to lose their “edge” during the break after the second quarter. If the

coaching staff can manage to rectify that, he insisted, results should change. What Gruden did not say is that he and his assistants need to do a better job of making game-plan adjustments. “You can’t say it’s Xs and Os, because we win the first half. It’s definitely more mental,” Riley said. “Maybe we come out too relaxed because we have the lead.” “When we have teams down, we need to step on their throats,” he added, stomping his left foot on the locker-room floor for emphasis, “and not let them back in the game.” The party line, anyway, is that making a big deal about it this week should have the desired effect. “It’s been addressed. It’s been talked about,” defensive coordinator Joe Barry said, employing a two-sentence combination he repeated at least two other times Thursday. “I don’t think it’s one of those things that you can just go, ‘Oh, whatever,’ and dig a hole and put your head in the sand.”

With two undefeated teams in the next four games on the Redskins’ schedule, Washington is in must-win mode Sunday vs. the 2-3 Bucs. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 A big problem The banged-up Redskins secondary must find a way to slow down Tampa Bay’s massive receivers (Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans are both 6-foot-5).

2 Will starters return? One thing that would help this struggling offense would be the return of tight end Jordan Reed and left tackle Trent Williams. Both are hopeful they’ll pass the NFL’s concussion protocol.

1 A rookie under center The Redskins‘ defense has just three interceptions this season, but it gets to face a rookie QB on Sunday. Jameis Winston threw four picks vs. Carolina two weeks ago.

Texans over Dolphins 1 p.m. Sunday

After a coaching change, Miami responded with a 38-10 win over the Titans. But this team needs more than a new voice to fix its problems. Meanwhile, the Texans have finally settled on the right guy at QB: Brian Hoyer.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Philip Rivers, Chargers QB vs. Raiders, 4:05 p.m. Sunday

The Chargers don’t seem to like to run it, as Rivers racked up a career-high 503 yards on 65 pass attempts last week against the Packers. Rivers has thrown for more than 350 yards in four of six games this season.

As the final game of the regular season approaches, D.C. United can be satisfied with another successful campaign. With a playoff berth locked up, United sits in second place in the Eastern Conference and can clinch a first-round bye with a victory at Columbus on Sunday (5 p.m., FS1). Before looking ahead to the playoffs, let’s look back on United’s standout performers this season. DEFENDER OF THE YEAR

Bobby Boswell

The veteran center back wasn’t as dominant as he was last season, when he was a finalist for MLS Defender of the Year, but he still provided steady leadership and stabilized a back line that suffered injuries all around him. Boswell, 32, leads the club in games played, minutes and clearances, and has added a pair of goals. NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Jairo Arrieta

For a team that valued continuity during the offseason after finishing atop the Eastern Conference in 2014, there aren’t many options for top newcomer. Arrieta, however, has proved a valuable addition to United’s forward ranks. With Fabian Espindola

sidelined for much of the year because of injury or suspension, Arrieta competently stepped into the starting lineup when he needed to, while also providing solid depth off the bench. His five goals tie him with Espindola for second on the team.

weekend, Opare still started at center back, raising the possibility that the unheralded defender has supplanted Birnbaum, a finalist in 2014 for MLS Rookie of the Year.

MOST PLEASANT SURPRISE

With stars such as Espindola and goalkeeper Bill Hamid missing portions of the season, United’s solid campaign is primarily the result of a collective effort. However, more than any other individual, Rolfe, 32, has been United’s rock in 2015. He was the focal point of the offense and provided guile, craft and vision on the ball in the attacking third. Rolfe leads the team in goals with 10 and was a game-in, game-out presence in the starting lineup.

Kofi Opare

Before this season, Opare had started a total of 11 games in his three-year MLS career. That all changed early in the season when starting center back Steve Birnbaum went down with injury, forcing Opare into the starting lineup. Opare, 25, gave United exactly what it needed, starting 16 games at center back and forming an effective partnership with Boswell. With Birnbaum healthy against Chicago last

How a couple traded spacious suburbia for urban efficiency DOWNSIZING Nicholas Herman and his wife, Shannon Claire Smith, had dreamed for years of moving from Charlotte, N.C., to Washington. In April 2014, Herman, 30, flew to Washington for a job interview. When Smith, 29, arrived to pick him up from the airport, he handed her his phone: He had an email offering him the position in the George Mason University development office, starting in two weeks. First, she burst into tears. But as she dried her eyes, she was already figuring out a plan to downsize. “I began working like a madwoman,” says Smith, who now works at American University as a Web content and marketing coordinator while also running a design business and writing a design blog, Burlap & Lace. “We knew that in D.C., all we could afford was a one-bedroom, so we had to sell and donate most of our possessions. we could keep our king-size bed.” The only nonnegotiables were their pets: Pomeranian Max and two cats, Fritters and Miss Kitty, would have to be welcome in their new digs. Goodbye, 2,300-square-foot traditional suburban house with three bedrooms, a nice yard and a two-car garage. Hello, 850-square-foot onebedroom in a 1928 building in Adams Morgan. Herman and Smith, who met as students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, were married in 2009 and bought a house in a foreclosure sale around the same time. They upgraded the house with DIY projects, laying laminate flooring, changing kitchen countertops and installing crown molding. But they always talked about relocating to Washington, where Smith’s best friend lived. “We like the energy of the city,” Herman says. So with his offer in hand, they focused on how much they could get rid of in four weeks. The plan was for Herman to start work and come back on weekends to help. First, they went apartment hunting. They found a pet-friendly one-bedroom rental for $1,850 — about three times their monthly mortgage payment in Charlotte. “We wanted a building with history and character and quirky detailing,” Smith says. “Our home in North Carolina was a cookiecutter house and was builder’sgrade-everything.” The apartment had original hardwood

floors, a cute dining alcove, high ceilings and a glassed-in former porch that let in lots of natural light. The kitchen was tiny but had two built-in china cabinets with glass doors.

Back in Charlotte, they hosted yard sales, listed things on Craigslist and donated to charity. They dumped most of their furniture, half their clothes, 90 percent of their books and all of their

holiday decorations. They thought of ways to make each room serve several functions. “I wanted to embrace the size and wanted it to be as bright and bold as possible,” Smith says. “I wanted to break the rules and be colorful and have fun with things like painting the ceiling in the hallway pink.” They struggled with the long, narrow living room layout. To make sense of it, they created three spaces: an entry area with a console table and place for mail and keys, a library wall of open bookshelves (to keep it from feeling closed in) and a lounging area with a sofa and TV. The dining alcove got a stylish new Scout

How to make the most of a small rental

Breaking up a long space into smaller, separate areas makes your home seem bigger. Use furniture or rugs to define “rooms.” Carve out a designated entry area for keys and mail, a comfortable spot for seating and a functional work space.

Hang artwork and curtains tall and wide. Put curtain rods just below the ceiling. Install floor-to-ceiling shelves to maximize storage without taking up floor space. Stretching the surface area of the walls creates the illusion of height and space.

& Nimble hanging lamp that glows copper inside when lighted. Smith painted a blackboard wall in the kitchen and installed a tiny herb garden of mint, oregano and thyme in wall-mounted pots. There have been new DIY projects: building a radiator cover in the bathroom, painting white cotton Ikea curtains ($14 a pair) to make them look custom and creating a headboard that required the two of them to wrestle $10-a-yard banana leaf fabric over layers of plywood, upholstery foam and batting. Thrift-shop bedroom lamps were updated with black drum shades from Target. Their small space doesn’t deter them from entertaining. They had 30 for a make-your-owngin-and-tonic party and a baby shower for 20, where Smith took everything off her bookshelves and filled them with presents. Last year they hosted Friendsgiving in their living room, sticking their sofa in the dining room and renting two tables to seat 20. Herman roasted two turkeys in the 7-foot-long galley kitchen. They are hosting the second annual Friendsgiving this year. Yes, they do miss grilling and having parties spill outside to the backyard. But they have no regrets. “It’s like a giant weight of knickknacks has been lifted off our shoulders,” Smith says. “We honestly don’t miss our old stuff.”

Moving from a 2,300-square-foot house to a one-bedroom rental required Shannon Claire Smith and Nicholas Herman to rethink everything. Here are some tricks they used to think outside the “rental box” and make the most of their smaller living space. JURA KONCIUS (THE WASHINGTON POST) Create zones

Handing out midseason superlatives COLLEGE FOOTBALL The college football season is only half over and already four FBS coaches have been fired, one was suspended for three games and another future Hall of Famer has resigned. Four preseason top-10 teams are no longer ranked. Michigan and Florida are back. Texas is not — yet. Ohio State’s quarterback competition is still going. Here’s the good and the bad, awesome and awful, of the first seven weeks of the season.

1 p.m. Saturday, CBSSN STORYLINE: Keenan Reynolds’ health. Navy’s senior QB sat out part of its last game (against Notre Dame on Oct. 10) with a leg injury. He’ll play, but will that injury affect how the Mids’ biggest weapon is able to move?

Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey

10 to out of the rankings. But the Yellow Jackets (2-5) have totally tanked. After winning 11 games last season, Georgia Tech has lost five straight, four in the ACC. Best coaching job: Kyle Whittingham, Utah. He lost both his offensive and defensive coordinators after last season and not only has there been no drop-off, but the Utes have improved. Utah is third in the nation in turnover margin at plus-12 and ninth in fewest penalties per game at 4.5.

Most surprising undefeated team: No. 12 Iowa. Sure, the schedule has set up nicely for Iowa’s 7-0 start, but only the most optimistic Hawkeyes fans believed that their team would be five wins over mediocre teams and one upset in the Big Ten title game away from the College Football Playoff. Ferentz forever!

Best turnaround by a first-year coach not named Jim: Pat Narduzzi, Pittsburgh. Jim Harbaugh (Michigan) and Jim McElwain (Florida) have received muchdeserved praise, but how about a little love for the former Michigan State defensive coordinator? The 25th-ranked Panthers (5-1) have almost matched last season’s win total even though star running back James Conner (knee) was lost for the season in the opener.

Most disappointing team: Georgia Tech. Auburn, USC, Georgia and Oregon have slid from top

Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer

NFL receiver Ed McCaffrey was expected to be a versatile and important cog in the Stanford offense, but he has emerged as its best player. He’s third in the nation in yards from scrimmage (169.3 per game).

Breakdown player: Jeremy Johnson, QB, Auburn. The highly hyped QB has six interceptions and was benched for redshirt freshman Sean White after three starts.

STORYLINE: A Mike Locksley team now. With Randy Edsall gone, this is the first look at the Terps with Locksley in command. Will the play-calling be any different? PLAYER TO WATCH: Terps QB Perry Hills. In this ugly QB battle, Hills is Locksley’s guy — at least for now. Hills is the best rusher of the quarterbacks on the roster.

Breakout player (defense): Carl Nassib, DE, Penn State. The former walk-on leads the nation with 111/2 sacks while doing his best J.J. Watt impersonation.

Best injury replacement: DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame. The redshirt freshman, who stepped in when Malik Zaire broke an ankle in the second week of the season, ranks 16th in the nation in passer rating (156.91). RALPH D. RUSSO (AP)

STORYLINE: The atmosphere. For the first time ever, ESPN’s “College GameDay” will be in Harrisonburg, Va. How crazy will Dukes fans get for the daylong festivities ahead of their homecoming game against in-state rival Richmond?

USC has dominated the headlines with the firing of Steve Sarkasian, but it’s the Utes, led by running back Devontae Booker, left, who have a shot at making the playoff.

This is a bounce-back game for both SEC teams. The Aggies are coming off a 41-23 loss to Alabama, and the Rebels have gone 2-2 since upsetting the Crimson Tide on Sept. 19.

MLB PLAYOFFS When Dayton Moore took over as general manager of the Royals in 2006, he knew he needed to figure out how to build a contender with limited resources. The Royals receive little credit as innovators, but their plan and execution have been impeccable. When the Royals take the Kaufmann Stadium field Friday for Game 6 of the ALCS against the Blue Jays, they will stand one victory away from their second straight pennant. In a game dominated more than ever by strikeouts, the Royals

play at the other extreme. The ball ends up in play after 84.1 percent of their plate appearances, by far the most in the majors. Their starting pitchers struck out 16.8 percent of the batters they faced, sixth-lowest in the majors. It is by design, the result of a strategy to covet speed and defense above power. The Royals, through Moore’s plotting, are a product of their environment. Their spacious ballpark inhibits home runs and forces outfielders to cover huge swaths. With a relatively small payroll, the Royals do not have

the resources to sign elite starting pitchers or home run hitters. So Moore looked elsewhere. If he couldn’t find a perfect pitching staff, he would make them better with the defense behind them. “We were going to go after pitchers who throw strikes, work quick, field their positions, hold runners, compete, prepare,” Moore said. “And if we can put a defense behind those guys, perhaps they can give us 200 innings. If we put our money into the bullpen, that’s where we’ve got a chance to dominate.” ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Truth’ wants justice The CBS ‘60 Minutes’ scandal is rendered stylishly, but with a heavy layer of bias

FILM REVIEW In “Truth,” Cate Blanchett plays the television journalist Mary Mapes, who, in 2004 — just weeks before the presidential election — produced a controversial “60 Minutes II” segment on President George W. Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard. Within hours of the story’s airing, it came under attack, with accusations of document forgeries and slipshod reporting culminating in Mapes’ termination and Dan Rather’s resignation from the network he had personified for decades. Adapted from Mapes’ memoir “Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power,” “Truth” re-creates that sickening episode with the

clenched, stomach-churning dread of watching someone’s professional life implode. Having written the screenplay for the journalistic thriller “Zodiac,” first-time director James Vanderbilt does an impressive job of keeping the screws turning, adroitly shifting from the giddy thrill of the chase to the thudding sense of doom that sets in when the story begins to unravel. Blanchett portrays Mapes as a headstrong if somewhat neurotic figure, the scarred daughter of an abusive father who has clearly cast Rather in a compensatory surrogate role. As the story starts to go south — when the photocopied memos come under question and her sources begin to wobble — her horror can be

read in every excruciating detail. Set in the hushed confines of editing rooms,“Truth” harks back to the kind of stylish, understated storytelling of the “All the President’s Men” era, an echo clearly intended by Robert Redford, who starred in that movie. But “Truth” doesn’t completely earn the comparison.

Even if logic and evidence suggest that the story was true all along, the fact remains that she and Rather botched its telling by rushing it, ignoring the concerns of document authenticators and risking their careers on a shaky source. Sidestepping those realities, “Truth” instead presents Mapes and her team as martyrs to a shadowy political-corporate cabal and an aggressively partisan Web culture that was just beginning to rear its toxic head. This may be the truth as Mapes and Rather see it; indeed, it’s possible for several things to be true at the same time. But as a film, “Truth” would have been more compelling with less sanctimony and tougher self-examination. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In veritas vino: ‘Truth’ is honest about wine o’clock

THURS. 10/22 at 7:30 PM Culture Clash & No Sanctuary Silver Spring Civic Building

“Truth” tries to get to the truth of whether CBS screwed up in a 2004 “60 Minutes” report that examined discrepancies in then-President George W. Bush’s military service record. And there are plenty of moments in the fact-based “Truth” that ring, well, true. Alcohol is commonly (and rightly, I think) associated with journalism; if obesity hadn’t killed my news producer father, it was only a matter of time before a Grey Goose ate his liver. It’s not like it’s “Mad Men” at the average newsroom today, but it’s pretty easy to find a person or few up for drinks after work. In one of the film’s scenes, Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett), the producer of the embattled segment, is alone on the couch, wrapping Christmas presents for her family with a mostly empty glass of wine in front of

her and a half-full bottle at her elbow. A news report about her news report comes on TV. She realizes she is facing a possibly career-ending poopstorm. She refills her glass to the rim, because let’s not pretend we’re not going to finish the bottle. And, yep, I’ve been there. I bet a lot of women are going to nod in recognition at that upturned bottle. Mapes’ pronounced relationship with alcohol in “Truth” is representative of how a lot of women drink. It’s certainly how I drink — mostly wine, as a response to stress, sometimes too much. And judging by the amount of Facebook memes celebrating wine, I bet a lot of my women friends drink the same way. Why many women today are engaged in a deep relationship with wine is a much bigger question than either my word count or completely nonexistent expertise can handle. I can hazard a guess, though: Nearly every minute of every

day, life is asking things from us: day care dropoff, commute, work, commute, pickup, homework, dinner, dishes, get the kids in bed, get the kids BACK in bed — and all of this is balanced with the non-daily stuff: Did I make the flu shot appointment? How’s the bank balance? Who is that guy who looks kind of like the guy I married only way more tired? Then add, “Did I just screw up my storied career with rookie mistakes, thereby making me responsible for a colossally wrong piece?” and one wonders how Mapes didn’t skip the glass and just pour the bottle into her mouth. In TV shows and movies, booze still too often has the negative role of Demon Alcohol, particularly when it comes to female characters. “Truth” tells a different story: What other movie has a woman upending chardonnay but doesn’t also have her hiding bottles of vodka in the hamper? Mapes drinks a lot in “Truth,” but the film nonjudgmentally presents that as a fact, not a problem. And that’s as refreshing as a new episode of “Arrow” and a crisp albarino after the day’s demands are met. Read Kristen Page-Kirby’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/thereelist

Jem (Aubrey Peeples) and Erica (Juliette Lewis) regret that tanning session.

3899 Branch Ave, Temple Hills, MD

There’s still magic in those earrings

301-702-2879 MarlowCinema.com

The dumb-but-fun ‘Jem and the Holograms’ wisely plays it straight FILM REVIEW The funniest play Shakespeare ever wrote is “Pyramus and Thisbe.” Don’t go flipping through your Norton Anthology to find it; it’s the play-within-aplay in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” A group of amateur actors re-enact the Greek myth, complete with an actor playing a Wall, literally standing between the two lovers. It’s hilarious, but only if the cast plays it straight, without a wink to the audience signaling they know it’s a joke. Which brings us to “Jem and the Holograms.” Based on the ’80s cartoon show that gave Gen X girls a burning desire for magic earrings, “Jem” is the story of mild-mannered Jerrica (Aubrey Peeples), who becomes an anonymous Internet musical sensation, backed by her three sisters. There’s a whole bunch of stuff about secret identities and there’s a battle with an evil record exec (Juliette Lewis) and there’s also a robot. Then the movie ends. “Jem” is ridiculous in every way. But, somehow, by the grace of God and director John M. Chu (not necessarily in that order), it works. Everyone — particularly

Peeples and her bandmates — turns in admirably earnest performances, with nary a moment of irony. Though sadly lacking the original show’s truly truly truly outrageous theme song, the music is catchy and the performances are energetically shot, particularly a Lady Gaga-esque solo performance from Jem. The script doesn’t rely on nostalgia or cheap in-jokes, but updates the concept, even celebrating the power of online communities. Two important notes: Avoid 3-D showings; it’s impossible to tell which scenes were converted from 2-D, so you’d get the same effect by wearing sunglasses, which will also help conceal your identity. And old-school “Jem” fans should stay through the credits for a Marvel-style bonus scene. Bottom line? “Jem” is really, really dumb, and really, really fun. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

‘Jane Got a Gun’

‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’

EXPECTED RELEASE: February

EXPECTED RELEASE: Feb. 5

SUMMARY: In her first truly dramatic role since 2010’s “Black Swan,” Natalie Portman returns in a dark Western. Portman plays Jane, a woman who is forced to enlist her gun-slinging ex-lover (Joel Edgerton) to protect her criminal husband from a gang of outlaws. But Jane is no damsel in distress. As the title implies, she’s armed and out for blood. SAMANTHA DEAN (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: In this action-packed adaptation of the best-selling parody novel, Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) maintains her characteristic independence, but this time she’s too busy kicking ass to be bothered with marriage. Matt Smith joins in as the insufferable Mr. Collins. Jane Austen would be proud. S.D. (EXPRESS)

BILLY HAISLEY, at deadspin.com, doesn’t understand the explanation

from a Chinese toymaker for its Nazi soldier action figure that bears an uncanny resemblance to soccer player Bastian Schweinsteiger. According to reports, the Germany captain and Manchester United midfielder is planning to sue the manufacturer. While the facial structure and hair of the toy are a dead ringer for Schweinsteiger, perhaps the most similar is its name — that’s right, the toy is called Bastian. Company spokesman Patrick Chen said the “figure is based on a typical German. We believe most Germans look like this.”

GERMAN LOPEZ , at vox.com, is aware of the Donald Trump paradox after the GOP presidential candidate retweeted an insult against Iowans. In the latest polls, Ben Carson has taken the lead in the swing state. A Trump supporter tweeted that genetically modified corn has made Iowans dumb, and Trump quickly retweeted the sentiment. Campaign officials took notice: David Kochel, a senior strategist for Jeb Bush, tweeted that the move was “unreal.”

“Biden/Obama wore the same tie as Beau during the 2008 DNC. Pretty cool.” @GJCOURT appreciates the sentiment from President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden during Biden’s announcement Wednesday in the Rose Garden. Many watching Biden announce that he would not run for president noted that he and Obama were wearing matching ties, a detail reflecting their close relationship. But some also remembered it was the same tie Beau Biden, the VP’s recently deceased son, wore at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

“Who knows if this will hurt Trump? Insulting people hasn’t exactly brought him down before.”

“Hey Target, the Force doesn’t have a glass ceiling. … Put Leia back!!”

“I assumed it was brewed in the USA. I just drank it because it was a decent lager. Oops I mean — I’m outraged! Give me $!”

@LILMSSTELLA reacts to a boy’s T-shirt sold by Target that featured an iconic scene from “Star Wars.” The shirt, however, replaced Leia with Luke in the image, which many commenters said was sexist and saddening. In response, Target is pulling the $4.50 shirt from its stores and website.

@HUMANPACKANIMAL teases about the class action settlement regarding Beck’s beer. In 2013, Beck’s drinkers took the brand to court after discovering it isn’t brewed in Germany — despite the “Originated in Bremen, Germany” line on the label. Now, to settle the lawsuit, parent brewer Anheuser-Busch has agreed to pay $20 million to duped consumers who have until Nov. 20 to file their claim at BecksBeerSettlement.com.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

MID-LIFE CRISES

Album title: ‘I’m 44, I Feel Inadequate’

‘Is this that fair use thing?’ Janet Jackson apologized to fans after her legal team shut down Instagram accounts that had videos from her “Unbreakable” tour, the New York Post reported. “I love and appreciate my fans,” she tweeted Wednesday. But, “permitting the use of long clips does present a contractual problem.” She said she will trust fans to only post short videos from now on, and “asked my team to … allow you to engage socially with these videos.” (EXPRESS)

Jeremy Renner is planning to release an album, the New York Post reported. On Tuesday night, he performed one song at a club in New York, the Animals’ version of “The House of the Rising Sun,” backed by the band Brother Sal. “He has a really good voice. It’s surprising,” an eyewitness told the Post. According to an unnamed source, Renner has been “singing every day for the last few weeks.” His representative said, “He is recording, but [there’s] no date or plans as to when this might be released.” (EXPRESS)

IRL, Bradley’s dating a 29-year-old supermodel

Michael Buble told “ET Canada” that he and Emily Blunt didn’t split over cheating — they broke up because “we weren’t right for each other.” “Emily is a beautiful and loving person, and I’m grateful for the time I had with her, for the relationship,” he said. “Without it, I wouldn’t have had a chance to fall in love with myself enough to be with a woman like my wife.” (EXPRESS)

Amy Schumer and Bradley Cooper are not dating, contrary to a joke Schumer made during her “Saturday Night Live” monologue, Cooper told Howard Stern on Wednesday. Reportedly, the two were at the Time 100 gala and chatted, then Cooper didn’t want her to leave. “All that stuff of … me saying no, no, no — that really happened,” he said, adding, “I thought I was getting a little creepy because I was making her stay.” (EXPRESS)
