Authorities say a man set a Fresno, Calif., home on fire while using a blowtorch to kill spiders. KFSN-TV reported 29 firefighters were called Tuesday night to put out the blaze. The man was house-sitting for his parents when he tried to kill black widow spiders with a blowtorch. He got out safely, but the attic and second story were damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters believe the blowtorch was to blame. (AP)

Police found a lion cub in an apartment in a suburb of Paris on Tuesday, CNN reported. The cub, just 6 weeks old, was in a child’s bed at the apartment. The person suspected of illegally keeping the cub was found hiding in a neighbor’s closet. Authorities tracked down the cub after learning of it via a social media video in which the suspect offered to sell it for 10,000 euros, or $11,400. The cub, a female, is healthy. (EXPRESS)

Matthew’s final resting place THE DISTRICT It wasn’t until Judy and Dennis Shepard were sitting on the plane, leaving their home state of Wyoming for the nation’s capital, carrying their son’s ashes, that the feeling sank in. “Matt’s moving away now,” Judy recalled thinking as the flight took off earlier this week. Twenty years after their son, 21-year-old Matthew Shepard, was brutally pistol-whipped and left to die on a buck-rail fence in a cold Wyoming prairie, making him a lasting symbol of the gay rights movement, his parents were on their way to lay his remains to rest — in a crypt in Washington National Cathedral. The thought of interring Matthew in the cathedral never dawned on his parents, they said in an interview Wednesday in the massive, Gothic-style Episcopal church. They had only been in the cathedral once. They didn’t even know it was home to anyone’s remains, let alone the likes of President Woodrow Wilson and

Helen Keller. But earlier this year, when the parents were presented with the idea, they felt it was the perfect fit. Matthew had served as an acolyte in his local Episcopal church, a place where he “always felt really safe,” said Judy, who also taught Sunday school in the church. Growing up, her son loved the theatrical “pomp and circumstance” aspect of church, and the sense of belonging it created. Interring his remains in a church, of all places, his parents

said, would send a message of acceptance and tolerance at a time when the relationship between churches and the LGBT community remains fraught. “The privilege of having Matt here, for others to be able to go sit and reflect, it’s kind of stunning,” Dennis said. Kevin Eckstrom, a spokesman for Washington National Cathedral, said the church offered the family the choice of a private service, but the Shepards decided to open it up to all the people still moved by Matthew’s death and legacy. The family hopes that young people will see the news of Friday’s service and know that “at least there are some facets of the religious community who accept all people,” Dennis said. But for the parents, it also means a parting of sorts. Having their son’s ashes close to them, in their town of Casper, Wyo., has been a source of comfort for the past two decades. Now, as of Friday, he will lie in rest 1,800 miles from their home. “That’s still hard actually, now that I’m saying it out loud,” Judy said, her eyes filling with tears. Teen’s anthem performance strikes a chord When 18-year-old Jackson Dean Nicholson, defensive end for the Arundel High School Wildcats in Gambrills, Md., took the field last Friday to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” he wasn’t expecting to become a viral star. But when a video of his low-key, countrified version of the national anthem went out on the internet, the world took notice. The performance has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. “It’s definitely been a buzz and it’s kind of been crazy,” said the artist, who goes by Jackson Dean. (TWP)

Wint guilty of murder in quadruple killing

THE DISTRICT A Maryland man was found guilty of murdering three members of a wealthy Northwest Washington family and their housekeeper, brutal 2015 crimes that gripped the nation’s capital. The jury’s Thursday verdict in the case against Daron Wint came after an emotional — and often graphic — six-week trial that included hundreds of pieces of evidence and dozens of witnesses. Wint was the sole person charged in the killings of married couple Savvas Savopoulos, 46, and Amy Savopoulos, 47; their son, Philip, 10; and the family’s housekeeper, 57-year-old Veralicia “Vera” Figueroa. Wint was convicted of multiple counts of murder as well as kidnapping, burglary and arson. With his back facing courtroom observers, Wint, 37, did not audibly react as the verdict was read. He stood with his head slightly bowed. About a dozen family members and friends of the victims were in court, including the parents of both Amy and Savvas Savopoulos. Some wept and embraced each other and prosecutors. The relatives declined to comment. “We hope that the verdict will bring some comfort to the families of the victims,” U.S. Attorney Jessie Liu said in a statement. She

called the crime a “senseless home invasion.” Federal prosecutors at trial portrayed Wint, a Wint former employee at a Savopoulos family business, as a man driven by greed and vengeance. The defense told jurors that Wint was innocent. They said his brother and half brother were the killers and that Wint had been set up to take the blame. Prosecutors alleged that Wint broke into the Savopoulos home in May 2015 and held the victims hostage as he demanded $40,000 in ransom that Savvas Savopoulos later had delivered in the hope the intruder would leave them unharmed.

The victims were beaten with baseball bats and stabbed repeatedly before their bodies were doused with gasoline and set on fire. The blaze engulfed the upstairs of the Savopoulos home, on Woodland Drive NW. Prosecutors said Wint’s DNA was found on a discarded slice of Domino’s pizza that had been delivered to the house the night the victims were held hostage. Authorities said they also found Wint’s DNA on a knife in the basement of the house and a hair matching Wint’s on a bed where the adults’ bodies were found. The jury’s verdict came after less than two full days of deliberations. Judge Juliet McKenna set sentencing for Feb. 1. KEITH L. ALEXANDER AND SPENCER S. HSU (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The remnants of Hurricane Willa and a little disturbance from the southwest have merged over the northern Gulf of Mexico, forming a new storm that will ride up the East Coast on Friday and Saturday. The storm will gain energy over the Mid-Atlantic when it interacts with a cold front coming in from the west. This classic fall nor’easter will bring drenching rain to the region, starting Friday afternoon and ending around Saturday afternoon. The stormiest conditions are expected Friday night, when rain may fall heavily at times, accompanied by winds gusting to around 30 mph. Rainfall totals between 1 and 1.75 inches are likely. Sunday should be dry — good news for Marine Corps Marathon participants and spectators. (TWP)

VA. CONGRESSIONAL POLL

Democratic challenger Jennifer Wexton’s percentage-point lead over Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District race, a new Washington Post-Schar School poll found. The poll indicated that voters who support Wexton are more motivated to vote against Comstock than for Wexton. The opposite is true in 69 battleground districts across the country, where more voters who support Democrats say they are rooting for the party’s candidate than against the Republican, according to the survey. Still, Wexton leads 56 percent to 43 percent. (TWP)

No death penalty for convicted killer Virginia man gets life in 2016 slaying of wife and a rookie officer PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA. A Virginia jury spared the life of an Army staff sergeant convicted of fatally shooting his wife and a rookie police officer after deadlocking Thursday on whether he should be executed. The jury sent a note Thursday morning after 12 hours of deliberation over three days, saying that it was split 6-6 on whether Ronald Hamilton, 34, of Woodbridge should be executed. Virginia law is explicit that a life sentence should be imposed when a jury does not unanimously vote for death.

“The jury is the voice of the community. Obviously, in this case the community is split right Hamilton down the middle, Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert said. No jury in Virginia has imposed a death sentence since 2011. Hamilton will serve life in prison without possibility of parole for the deaths of his wife, Crystal Hamilton, and Officer Ashley Guindon, who was working her first shift after being sworn in. Hamilton shot and killed his wife in the family’s Woodbridge home in 2016. He then shot three police officers who responded. Guindon

died. The other officers suffered serious injuries but survived. P rosecutors had urged the Guindon jury of 10 women and two men to “put him in the grave for his actions. The two officers who survived the shooting, Jesse Hempen and David McKeown, were among those who testified during the two-month trial. After the jury indicated it was split, prosecutors asked the judge to instruct the jury to keep deliberating and try to reach a unanimous verdict. Defense lawyers said that such an instruction, which is common in many criminal cases, is inappropriate

in a death penalty case. Ebert, who has served as the county’s top prosecutor for 50 years, has sent 10 people to Virginia’s death chamber, more than any other prosecutor. Judge Steven Smith opted against pressing the jurors for unanimity. “The jury has given me clarity, Smith said, noting the 6-6 split. “The jury is deadlocked. Hamilton showed little reaction as it became clear that his life was spared. Family members seated behind him wept. Outside the courtroom, some of the victims’ family members wept in each others’ arms. Metro is considering a number of ideas to reverse its declining ridership. General Manager Paul Wiedefeld is even talking about adding food vendors, photo booths and DVD rentals at stations to create what he describes as a “Whole Foods experience.” But David Poland, who’s been riding the Red Line for years, says Metro might instead want to focus on the basics — like not leaving him and hundreds of riders stranded for hours. What happened to him and hundreds of others on a Saturday night earlier this month is exactly what Metro needs to avoid if it ever wants to regain its former ridership. Poland had spent the afternoon of Oct. 13 volunteering at the Snallygaster beer festival. He’d used a couple of the free beer tickets that he’d gotten for his trouble. So when he called his wife a little before 9 p.m. to say he was about to get on the Red Line to Rockville, he said he’d had a good day. And he’d be home soon. His wife started making a dinner of Indian curry and naan, bolstered with leftover spring rolls, for what was

supposed to be an uneventful evening in front of the TV. But as the train reached the Van Ness-UDC station, there came the announcement that Metro riders dread even more than single-tracking — offloading. There was smoke in the tunnel by the Friendship Heights station. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel would say later the electric current from the third rail took “an undesired, wayward path,” grounding on a bolt and generating the smoke. Metro shut off the power and suspended service between the Van Ness and Medical Center stations while the bolt was removed. An announcement on Poland’s trains said there would be shuttle buses at Van Ness. Poland, 66, isn’t easily flustered. Before retiring, he’d often traveled internationally for PATH, a nonprofit global health organization. He’d also spent eight years commuting on the Red Line, so he had grown somewhat inured to the unpredictability of life on the Metro. “Totally understandable,” Poland said, that Metro wouldn’t want the train to go through a smoky tunnel. But then things really went south. Outside the Van Ness station, Poland found others from

previous offloaded trains. They’d already been waiting for 15 minutes, they told him, but no bus had come. Another hour went by before the first bus came. But several more trains had offloaded by then, adding to the crowd. Even though many had given up and left via Lyft and Uber, Poland said, there were still about 200 people waiting. The driver of the lone bus wouldn’t open the front door, telling people to enter via the middle door instead. That made the people who had been waiting at the front start pounding on the doors. More buses were coming, the driver said. After the bus left, with Poland unable to board, he texted Metro transit police, who said more buses were on the way. About 20 minutes passed. It was about 10:20 p.m. when Poland went back down the

escalator into the station, where he and others were shocked to see the next Shady Grove-bound train would be coming in seven minutes. While they were waiting outside, the trains had started running again, at about 9:57, but no one had told them. Poland told the man in the Metro booth that he should tell the people who were still on the street. “He just shrugged and just kind of laughed,” Poland said. Poland got home at 11 p.m. — two hours after getting on the train for what was supposed to be around a 40-minute ride. His earlier good feelings were long gone, his dinner cold. “They could have at least given us our money back,” he said of Metro. Reach Kery Murakami at kery.murakami@washpost.com. NEW BIKE LANES IN D.C.

The number of miles of bike lanes the District Department of Transportation has built across all four quadrants of the city so far this year. The agency is halfway through its goal of 7 new miles of bikeways this year, it says, though that goal is unlikely to be met. DDOT says it plans to double the existing 10 miles of protected lanes by 2024. Some riders and advocates say the plan sounds promising but that six years to build 10 miles of lanes is less than ambitious. “We need more, faster,” said Robert Gardner, advocacy director at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. (TWP) Concerns rise as crop-destroying invasive insect spotted in Cecil County, Md.

Metro says it will keep its rider council TRANSPORTATION The Metro board blinked, and the Riders’ Advisory Council has been saved. In a meeting Thursday, the board decided to table its motion to dismantle the advisory group tasked with offering insights and recommendations to Metro leadership on behalf of the system’s riders. Up until then, the majority of board members had pushed to dissolve the group, saying that the 21-member panel was a drain on Metro resources and provided few benefits. They planned to approve a resolution Thursday giving the RAC the ax. But after a vociferous outcry from Metro observers and local elected leaders, including the region’s entire congressional delegation, the board relented. Instead, board members said they are committing to revamping the Riders’ Advisory Council to help make the group more impactful, and more connected to regular riders. Metro board member Christian Dorsey said canceling the group was a bad idea. “It seems contrary to engaging riders in a constructive way,” he said, while also recognizing that rescuing the low-profile citizens council presented an attractive opportunity for politicians to weigh in with no cost to themselves. “Standing with riders,” Dorsey said, “is easier to do than committing to funding.” MARTINE POWERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Tammy Baldwin as a “radical far-left” socialist and said “our country is assaulted” by a caravan of thousands of Latin American immigrants, still about 1,000 miles away. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate crimes, believes there is no “moral equivalence” between the violent rhetoric of the two parties, according to Heidi Beirich, the head of the organization’s Intelligence Project. “The fact of the matter is that the people who have received these bombs — the Clintons, Obama and George Soros — have been horrifically demonized by the right. Not just in terms of neo-Nazis, but also from people like Donald Trump,” Beirich said. “There tends to be a relationship between demonizing rhetoric and violence.”

POLITICS President Trump on Thursday denied a New York Times report that he often calls friends to gripe or solicit advice on his unsecure iPhones, allowing Chines spies to listen in and gain valuable insights into how to deal with the U.S. administration. “I only use Government Phones, and have only one seldom used government cell phone. Story is soooo wrong!” Trump tweeted. A Chinese official also denied the Times report, dismissing it as “fake news.” The Times report said that Trump’s aides have repeatedly warned him that his mobile calls are not secure. The Times said U.S. intelligence reports have indicated that Chinese spies are listening. Aides had pressured Trump into using his secure White House landline more often lately but he has still refused to give up his iPhones, The Times said. Pushing back against Trump’s denial, former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman tweeted Thursday: “He ALWAYS used his personal iPhone in WH for calls.” The report was met with alarm from Democratic lawmakers. “This is a big problem, if true,” Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said Wednesday night on Twitter. “The intelligence community works hard to defend us against foreign espionage. The last thing we need is for the President to be jeopardizing national security through sheer carelessness.” JOHN

for disrupting GOP lawmakers or Trump officials at restaurants or other public places. While campaigning, Trump and leading Republican candidates have increasingly warned of a rising Democratic “mob.” But even some Trump allies saw the events of Wednesday as a moment for reflection and urged Trump to tone it down. “You gotta calm it down,” said Anthony Scaramucci, a prominent Trump supporter who briefly worked in his administration. “The president has grown in the job. He now has to take another transcendental step and realize that he’s got to dial down the rhetoric.” On the other end of the political spectrum, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, offered a message to “all public officials of all partisan affiliations.” “Don’t encourage violence,” he said. “Don’t encourage hatred. Don’t encourage attacks on media.” De Blasio added: “That has to start at the top.”

POLITICS The discovery of pipe bombs targeting prominent Democratic politicians and CNN is raising the threat of election-season violence largely unknown in the U.S. — and prompting uncomfortable questions about the consequences of leaders’ increasingly vitriolic rhetoric. Coming two weeks before midterm elections, the thwarted attacks Wednesday caused renewed soul-searching — and finger-pointing — about whether President Trump has fanned passions to dangerous levels. Democrats swiftly pointed to his remarks seeming to condone violence against reporters and belittling political opponents, including some apparently targeted by the devices. Trump decried all political violence and issued a broad call for unity. Some voters expressed concern the country was spiraling into new territory. “It almost seems like we’re in the middle of a civil war without the shots being fired,” said Bobby Dietzel, a 45-year-old information technology worker from Kansas City who is registered with neither party. From a Denver coffee shop, he said he watched the political conflict with alarm. “It’s almost scary to talk politics with people.” The thwarted attacks added volatility to midterm elections poised to be a referendum on Trump’s tumultuous two years in office. Long before the explosives were discovered this week, violent rhetoric had emerged as a central theme in the closing days of the midterm elections. Republicans derided protesters

Search for clues begins Investigators searched coast-tocoast Thursday for clues to the motives behind a mail bomb plot apparently aimed at critics of the president, analyzing the mechanics of the crude devices to reveal whether they were intended to detonate or simply sow fear two weeks before Election Day. A search of a postal database suggested at least some of the packages may have been mailed from Florida, one official said. In all, 10 packages have been discovered containing similar explosives. Debris is scattered in Garapan, Saipan, on Thursday after Super Typhoon Yutu hit the Northern Mariana Islands.

Typhoon Yutu slams the Northern Marianas Strongest storm to hit U.S. in 2018 may lead to months of outages WEATHER Residents of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands braced Thursday for months without electricity or running water after the islands were slammed with the strongest storm to hit any part of the U.S. this year. Even after Super Typhoon Yutu had moved away from the U.S. territory in the Pacific, residents were warned by emergency management officials to stay indoors because downed power lines blocked roadways and winds were strong enough

to make driving dangerous. Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, the commonwealth’s delegate to Congress, said the territory will need significant help to recover from the storm, which he said injured several people. Sablan could not provide further details or official estimates of casualties. “It’s like a small war just passed through,” Sablan said. Sablan said the entire island sustained damage, but some areas are worse than others. He has not been able to reach officials on the territory’s neighbor islands of Tinian and Rota because phones and electricity are out. Maximum sustained winds of 180 mph were recorded around the eye of the storm, which

passed over Tinian and Saipan early Thursday local time, said Brandon Aydlett, a National Weather Service meteorologist. Saipan and Tinian will be unrecognizable, Aydlett said, adding that the weather service received reports that Yutu’s catastrophic winds ripped roofs from homes and blew out windows. Fallen trees could isolate residents, and power and water outages could last weeks, the weather service warned. “This is the worst-case scenario. This is why the building codes in the Marianas are so tough,” Aydlett said. “This is going to be the storm which sets the scale for which future storms are compared to.” CALEB JONES AND

The amount British regulators fined Facebook on Thursday for failing to protect the privacy of its users in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It was the maximum penalty the agency could impose. Britain’s Information Commissioner Office found that between 2007 and 2014, Facebook gave app developers access to users’ data without their consent, such that about 87 million people’s data was used without their knowledge. Under new EU rules, the fine could have been $1.6 billion or more. (AP) U.K. says women can serve in all roles in its military, including front-line combat units, special forces

MEDIA Megyn Kelly was absent from her NBC News morning show on Thursday following this week’s controversy over her comments about blackface, amid indications that her time at the network could be ending after less than two years. An NBC spokeswoman said that “given the circumstances,” the network was airing repeats of “Megyn Kelly Today” on Thursday and Friday. According to People magazine, multiple sources said that Kelly’s show has been canceled. The sources said that Kelly has not been fired from NBC, but her show is “most likely over.” During a segment about Halloween costumes on Tuesday, Kelly defended the use of blackface while discussing a character on “Real Housewives of New York City” who darkened her face for a Diana Ross costume. She said it was acceptable when portraying a character when she was a kid. Social media condemnation was swift, and Kelly apologized to fellow NBC staffers in an email. Yet both NBC’s “Nightly News” and the “Today” show did stories on their colleague’s comment. Al Roker said, “She owes a big apology to people of color across the country.” Kelly opened Wednesday’s show by saying she was sorry and she understands the “value of being sensitive to our history, particularly on race and ethnicity.” DAVID BAUDER (AP)

nation+world Public prosecutor cites evidence from Turkey in latest change of story MIDDLE EAST Saudi Arabia’s public prosecutor said Thursday that Jamal Khashoggi was killed in a planned operation, citing information received from Turkey, according to a statement from the kingdom’s Foreign Ministry. It is the latest reversal by Saudi authorities, who last week said Khashoggi was killed accidentally in a fistfight at the Saudi Consulate by “rogue” agents. According to the statement, a joint Saudi-Turkish investigative team “indicates that the suspects in the incident had committed

their act with a premeditated intention.” The announcement underscored the mounting pressures on Saudi Arabia to fully illuminate the journalist’s death, after its previous explanations were contradicted by Turkey and met with skepticism by the United States, a close Saudi ally. Still, neither President Trump nor the Saudis have traced the journalist’s killing to an order from the Saudi leadership. U.S. intelligence officials and lawmakers as well as the European Union have said that such an operation — targeting a critic of the crown prince in a foreign country — is unlikely to have been ordered without the knowledge of senior Saudi officials.

The new Saudi statements did not say what led the prosecutor to draw that conclusion, only that it was based on information shared by Turkish investigators working with Saudi officials in Turkey. Khashoggi disappeared on Oct. 2 while retrieving a document at the consulate in Istanbul. In another sign that the kingdom is seeking to contain the fallout, Salah Khashoggi, the eldest son of the slain man, has left Saudi Arabia, two people close to the family said Thursday. The son, a dual U.S.-Saudi citizen, was headed to the U.S. to join his three siblings.

U.S. to send troops to border Trump will deploy 800 in response to caravan of migrants in Mexico

NATIONAL SECURITY The Trump administration is expected to deploy additional U.S. troops to assist in security operations at the southern border in response to a caravan of Central American migrants traveling north on foot through Mexico, three U.S. officials confirmed Thursday. The plan calls for 800 to 1,000 more troops, most of them activeduty forces from the Army and the Air Force, to join a growing border mission called for by President Trump, one official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been made. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is expected to authorize the additional deployment as early as Friday, officials said. In a Thursday morning tweet, Trump called again for changes to U.S. immigration laws, which he said “make it tough for us to stop people at the Border.” He added that he is “bringing out the military for this National Emergency. They will be stopped!” Later, the president tweeted: “To those in the Caravan, turnaround, we are not letting people into the United States illegally. Go back to your Country and if you want, apply for citizenship like millions of others are doing!” Critics have said that Trump’s response to the caravan has been aimed at fanning public fears

Members of the caravan wash clothes and bathe in a river Thursday in Pijijiapan in Mexico’s Chiapas state.

over inflated security threats to rally his conservative base ahead of the Nov. 6 midterm elections. The caravan is still weeks from reaching the U.S. border, and Mexican authorities said the number of migrants has dwindled rapidly, from an estimate of 7,200 by the United Nations early in the week to 3,630 on Wednesday. The Mexican government said it had processed 1,700 asylum claims. It is not clear what effect the troops would have, given that many of the migrants, if they reach the United States, would probably attempt to surrender to Border Patrol agents and seek asylum protections. U.S. officials said the troops would not play a law enforcement role and

would instead include engineers to build new traffic barriers, aviation support staff, doctors and lawyers to provide legal representation. “It’s sad and irresponsible that the president would deploy the world’s strongest military against a group of unarmed migrants, including women and children,” said Kevin Appleby, a policy director at the Center for Migration Studies. The new deployments would constitute a separate and distinct mission from Operation Guardian Support. Under that program, about 2,100 National Guard troops have been involved in border operations since the spring. About 1,600 of those service members are in “border sectors,” with others in headquarters

units, officials said this week. The addition of active-duty forces could raise concerns among human rights groups, given that the caravan, which originated in Honduras, is made up largely of families, including children. U.S. officials said Thursday morning that the additional forces are not expected to include any “trigger pullers.” One U.S. official said the troops will have no law enforcement role, so the Posse Comitatus Act, a federal law that limits the use of the military for domestic law enforcement operations, does not apply. The official compared the deployment to active-duty troops assisting with hurricane relief. DAN L AMOTHE AND DAVID NAK AMUR A (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Fewer than 4 out of 10 adults in the United States got flu shots last winter, one likely reason why the 2017-2018 season was the deadliest in decades. Reports released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide new details outlining the severity of the past flu season, during which more people were killed by seasonal influenza than in any other since the 1970s. Flu vaccination is the main way to prevent sickness and death caused by flu. But last season, vaccination coverage among adults was 37.1 percent, a decrease of 6.2 percentage points from the previous season. “That’s huge. It’s a striking inflection down from the previous year,” said William Schaffner, medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. The CDC estimates that 49 million people were sickened by flu, 960,000 were hospitalized and 79,000 died — including 183 children. Schaffner and CDC officials also cited preliminary reports about low vaccine effectiveness in Australia. Flu activity in the Southern Hemisphere can often predict what Americans might expect. Further analysis showed those early reports to be wrong. The flu vaccine is not perfect, but it reduces hospitalizations and admissions to intensive-care units. LENA H. SUN

Dodgers leave power on the bench

REDSKINS AT GIANTS | 1 P.M. SUNDAY, FOX

The Redskins’ offense hasn’t hit its stride as QB Alex Smith adapts to a new system REDSKINS Alex Smith knows he missed an opportunity Sunday. He had tight end Jeremy Sprinkle open in the end zone on a play-action rollout in the third quarter against the Cowboys and missed the throw. Washington (4-2) settled for a field goal and watched another chance for a big play evaporate. Smith said he thought Sprinkle would flatten out as he finished the route. Regardless, Smith was unhappy with the pass. “Too much air on that throw, and it just sailed,” he said. That missed connection is another example of how the offense remains a work in progress entering Sunday’s game

at the Giants. All of the tight ends have been available, but injuries to Paul Richardson Jr., Jamison Crowder and Chris Thompson have forced Smith to try to develop chemistry with both backups and starters in his first season with the club. Smith has faced criticism for his accuracy this season. He has completed 63.3 percent of his passes, which would be his lowest percentage since 2013. He completed a season-high 71.7 percent in a Week 2 loss to the Colts, but that rate has dropped each week since, sinking to 56 percent in the 20-17 win against Dallas. Part of the upside of trading for Smith, 34, was supposed to

JOE ROBBINS (GETTY IMAGES)

It’s still It’s still a matter matter of timing of timing be that he was an established veteran who has experience in multiple offenses and could pick up where Kirk Cousins left off without an extensive process. Through the season’s first six games, that process has been something less than seamless, but coach Jay Gruden sees it as a correctable situation. “Every week he is getting more comfortable, not just with the way we’re calling plays and doing things but with the people around him and the protections and stuff,” Gruden said. “There’s a lot for a quarterback to do in pro football, and when terminology is new for you and players are new and the clock’s going and the front’s moving and stuff, you’re going to have a missed opportunity from time to time.”

Those misses have been frequent: The Redskins rank No. 25 in points (21.0 per game), No. 24 in total yards (337.5) and No. 26 in passing yards (218.5). The Giants (1-6) might provide a cure for that. They had the No. 26 scoring defense (26.4 points) in the league before trading two starters this week, lineman Damon Harrison (to the Lions) and cornerback Eli Apple (to the Saints). Harrison has the fifth-best run-stop percentage in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. Apple ranks as the No. 29 cornerback among those who’ve played 50 percent of the team’s snaps. “They have some pretty darn good players over there even without those two they lost,” Gruden said. K AREEM COPELAND

With the Dodgers in an 0-2 hole against the Red Sox in the World Series, it’s fair to think they’ve outsmarted themselves. Facing a lefty starter for the second straight night Wednesday, the Dodgers once again went with an all-righthanded lineup. On their bench sat their four top home run hitters this season — Max Muncy, below, (35 homers), Cody Bellinger (25), Joc Pederson (25) and Yasmani Grandal (24), three lefties and a switch-hitter. They eventually played in a 4-2 loss, but it was too late — the Dodgers produced just three hits. At least Dodgers manager Dave Roberts won’t face that platoon decision again Friday night, when Boston righty Rick Porcello faces Los Angeles righty Walker Buehler. (TWP)

51-POINT OUTING

Curry gives new meaning to beyond the arc

The Wizards suffered through a 144-122 loss Wednesday night at Golden State, but at least they got to see a show. In the first quarter, Steph Curry went off for 23 points. He ultimately scored 51 in just 32 minutes. Every time Washington dispatched a new defender to play him tighter, he inched farther away, up to 34 feet. Wizards guard Bradley Beal offered only one possible solution: “Probably foul the s--- out of him.” (TWP)

In his first year in Minnesota, he’s third in the NFL in passing yards and has 14 TD passes with just three picks. It’s worth watching how he does on third down after converting just two of 15 chances in a Week 7 rout of the Jets.

D.C. United forward Wayne Rooney, second from left, has scored 12 goals in 19 games and led the team to a 12-4-3 record since his debut in mid-July.

could opt to rest players against the Fire (8-18-7). But United knows that a win would almost certainly secure home-field advantage in the opening round. Playing the knockout match in the District could be crucial for a D.C. side that has gone 12-2-1 at Audi Field but 1-9-6 on the road. “Of course it could be important — obviously our form [at Audi Field] is great,” Rooney said. “But if we host a game or we don’t, we have to be confident in whoever we play, wherever we play, that we can win the game.”

And United is not lacking in confidence: Behind the attacking duo of Rooney (12 goals in 19 games) and Luciano Acosta (10 goals and a league-leading 17 assists), the club has won five straight and remains unbeaten since the end of August. “I know we’re entertaining the fans and we’re putting together a really good product,” coach Ben Olsen said. “I feel like it has a lot of really good components, and I’m looking forward to testing how far we can go in the postseason.” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

MLS D.C. United’s 3-1 win over New York City FC last weekend culminated a three-month journey from cellar dwellers to darkhorse contenders. But minutes later, as United relished the playoff-clinching victory in the home locker room at Audi Field, the narrative already was shifting to the next step. “We accomplished something very, very good,” goalkeeper Bill Hamid said. “There’s still a little bit more. We can go get home-field advantage — and I think that’s the talk in the locker room right now.” Sitting last in the Eastern Conference in mid-July, when Audi Field opened and star addition Wayne Rooney debuted, D.C. has gone 12-4-3 during a home-heavy back half of the season. Fifth-place United (14-11-8) already knows it will play a oneoff knockout match Wednesday or Thursday, with a place in an Eastern Conference semifinal series at stake. But first it will wrap up the regular season at the Chicago Fire on Sunday. Considering the quick turnaround between that game and the start of the playoffs, D.C.

Troubled, but not ‘toxic’ Report on Md. football finds that culture didn’t lead to player’s death

JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MARYLAND The 198-page external report that will help the University System of Maryland Board of Regents decide the fate of football coach DJ Durkin painted a troubling picture of the program but stopped short of saying the environment in College Park was “toxic.” The investigative commission “found that the Maryland football team did not have a ‘toxic culture,’ but it did have a culture where problems festered because too many players feared speaking out,” according to a copy of the report obtained Thursday by The Washington Post. The board received the report Oct. 19. The board then held a special meeting Tuesday in Baltimore, where the 17 regents discussed what actions to take. They met again Thursday. The report, which has not been made public, made no recommendations regarding Durkin or other athletic department personnel. The board has made no personnel decisions but could announce some actions soon. The commission found that “during Mr. Durkin’s tenure, the Athletics Department lacked a culture of accountability, did not provide adequate oversight of the football program, and failed to provide Mr. Durkin with the tools, resources, and guidance

An independent commission has been studying Terps coach DJ Durkin and the football program.

necessary to support and educate a first-time head coach in a major football conference.” Durkin, now 40, was hired before the 2016 season. He had been an assistant at several major programs and was interim head coach at Florida in 2014. The Maryland investigation began in August after media reports that alleged abuse and bullying in the program. Those reports came in the wake of offensive lineman Jordan McNair’s death. McNair, 19, suffered exertional heatstroke during a team workout May 29 and died 15 days later. Durkin

has been on administrative leave since Aug. 11, and Rick Court, his strength and conditioning coach, resigned Aug. 13. According to the report, the commission interviewed 55 former players who played under Durkin, the parents of 24 players, 60 current and former athletic department staff members, 12 university officials not in the athletic department and 14 others. The report said, “In light of our conclusion that Maryland’s football culture was not ‘toxic,’ we do not find that the culture caused the tragic death of Jordan McNair. “If the culture had been ‘malicious or harmful,’ Mr. Durkin would not have earned the loyalty and respect of many of his student-athletes and coaches,” the report said. “Many players interviewed by the Commission felt Mr. Durkin’s and Mr. Court’s coaching tactics reflected those of a ‘big time football program.’ ” The report said there was a “chasm” between Kevin Anderson, the former athletics director, and his deputy, Damon Evans, who took over the department’s top post on an interim basis last year and was promoted to the position June 25. The report said the commission heard from many players, parents and coaches who complained about the “intensity and length of practices and workouts, [and] insufficient recovery time.” RICK MAESE AND KEITH L. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

An actor’s eye: Dano’s ‘Wildlife’ is a stunning debut In “Wildlife,” a marriage crumbles, largely in a silent stillness. We watch in the same way. That’s exactly how it should be. “Wildlife” is the astounding directorial debut of Paul Dano (whom you might remember from him being awesome in “There Will Be Blood” and the under-seen “Ruby Sparks”). Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal star as Jeanette and Jerry, a couple living in Montana in the 1960s whose marriage is so on the rocks it’s simply begging for a shot or two of bourbon. (Thank you! Tip your waitress!) Jerry is susceptible to losing jobs — of course, it’s never his fault — so he takes temporary work away

from home, fighting a wildfire. While he’s gone, teenage son Joe (Ed Oxenbould) watches as Jeanette blossoms under her newfound freedom. Of course, newfound freedom can be a hell of a drug. Even good actors don’t always — or even often — transition into good directors. They are, after all, entirely different skill sets. Still, you can see Dano’s strengths as an actor translate into his skills as a director (he also co-wrote the screenplay, based on a novel by Richard Ford, with “Ruby Sparks” writer Zoe Kazan). Dano, 34, has always been good at being quiet and compelling; in “Little Miss Sunshine” he didn’t speak for most of the movie, but still held his own in a talented, relatively loud cast. That’s similar to what happens

Final season of Comedy Central’s “Broad City” to premiere Jan. 24

in “Wildlife”; just as Dano the actor is comfortable with silence, so is Dano the director. Dano His camera is largely still. There is very little music; most of the music that is there isn’t an external score, but comes from an internal source like a radio. His shots linger on faces a second or two longer than many other directors would choose. Some movies come at you, and sometimes that works. “Avengers: Infinity War” was largely an immersive experience — sit back and let the superheroes watch over you. That doesn’t say there weren’t subtle moments, but I, for one, typically caught them only on rewatch or in GIF form. With

movies like that, you hang on until the adventure is through, clutching on to the story as it hurtles to the end. “Wildlife,” in contrast, invites the audience in. In fact, it demands the audience be part of the story. When we watch the subtle shifts in Mulligan’s face, we’re given the time to read her, to wonder and to contemplate. The audience becomes an active participant because “Wildlife’s” stillness functions as silence, and we fill that void with our own thoughts and emotions — our own selves. There’s a common saying that “most of acting is reacting,” and that’s true in the same sense that when the other person is talking in a conversation, the listener’s role should be to listen, rather than thinking of what the next thing they’ll say is. Real listening requires being fully present. That’s one of the things Dano excels at on-screen, and it’s clearly his greatest strength now that he’s stepped behind the camera. He requires that the audience be still, be silent and be wholly present. It’s what makes “Wildlife” a quiet stunner of a film. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

Deadline: Alexander Skarsgard joins “Godzilla vs. Kong”

A submarine-set action thriller starring Gerard Butler, “Hunter Killer” is bombastic and garish. It’s also ridden with cliches, frenetic energy, and preposterous politics and diplomacy. But the first Hollywood film from South African director Donovan Marsh does cook up some captivating action set pieces. And the movie so often is unintentionally silly that it is actually kind of a fun watch. LINDSEY BAHR (AP)

‘Mid90s’ R, 84 min.

Set in Los Angeles, where 13-year-old Stevie (Sunny Suljic) is growing up with his older brother (Lucas Hedges) and their mom (Katherine Waterston), “Mid90s” includes signifiers of the time. But Jonah Hill makes a reassuringly lowkey directorial debut, which dodges the generational nostalgia suggested by the title. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Johnny English’ back for another bumbling romp

FOX SEARCHLIGHT

FILM REVIEW As sharp-tongued, alcoholic misanthropes go, Lee Israel deserves her place in cinema’s most un-hateable pantheon. Israel, a freelance journalist, made a name for herself in the 1970s by writing about such similarly tough-minded women as Katharine Hepburn and Tallulah Bankhead. But by the 1990s, Israel’s usual work had evaporated, a descent not helped by her prickly demeanor and a spreading infotainment ethos demanding that writers develop personae as vivid as their subjects. It’s at this low point that we meet Melissa McCarthy’s Lee in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” in which the actress brings her dowdiest, most disagreeable A-game to a caustically funny, improbably affecting enterprise. When she’s fired from the latest of a series of graveyard-shift clerical jobs, Lee calls her agent (a sublimely deadpan Jane Curtin) to revive a long-gestating biography of Fanny Brice. You’ve never seen Melissa McCarthy like this. And she’s not even the best thing about her new movie. It’s at a corner watering hole that Lee meets Jack, a dashing but vaguely disreputable character who, when she asks what he does, answers with a cryptic, “This and that. Mostly

Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant turn out to be delectable scene partners in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

that.” Portrayed by Richard E. Grant in a delectable melange of catty observational wit and almost childlike guilelessness, Jack winds up being an appropriate henchman in the crime spree she embarks on, as an act of economic opportunism and, ultimately, creative defiance. Based on the real-life Israel’s memoir, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” dramatizes one of the strangest true-crime stories of the late 20th century, one whose precise parameters are so devious and, in their own way, deeply romantic that synopsis wouldn’t be fair. Suffice it to say that Lee ends up finding her second act. “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” is directed by Marielle Heller from a tartly on-point script

‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ (R, 106 min.) DIRECTOR: Marielle Heller STARS: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant, Dolly Wells, Jane Curtin IN A NUTSHELL: Struggling journalist Lee Israel starts forging and selling letters, which she says were written by deceased famous writers.

by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty. Heller exhibits a richly expressive sense of texture and atmosphere, capturing the hushed coziness of the shops that constitute Lee’s territory, as well as the sad cat-lady squalor of her own Upper West Side one-bedroom. In some ways, Lee is a stretch

for McCarthy, who’s best known for such broad comedies as “Bridesmaids.” She’s more muted and layered here, but Lee still resides squarely in the actress’s wheelhouse as a woman unburdened by conventional notions of femininity and politesse. As the extravagantly un-pindownable Jack, Grant gives her a fabulous co-star to play against or lean into, as the characters’ mercurial relationship demands. Together, he and McCarthy give spiky, sympathetic life to the thwarted promise of so many New York misfits. Convinced that they’re one in a million, they forget that, just footsteps away, there are at least eight other people just like them. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TELEVISION

The percentage of LGBTQ characters featured in the new TV season’s prime-time network series, according to an annual study released Thursday by media advocacy group GLAAD. While the percentage marked an all-time high, up from last year’s 6.4 percent, GLAAD said the TV industry is still falling short. The organization is calling on networks to reach 10 percent inclusion for LGBTQ characters in primetime in the next two years to ensure that “entertainment reflects the world in which it is created,” CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said. (AP) Hollywood Reporter: Idris Elba, Tilda Swinton to star in George Miller romance “Three Thousand Years of Longing”

FILM REVIEW Johnny English, the secret agent of last resort, need not mean the movie of last resort. In “Johnny English Strikes Again,” the charming third chapter in the surprisingly durable spy-spoof franchise, retired MI7 operative Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) is called back into service — but only after a cyberattack exposes the identities of every other agent. After the prime minister (Emma Thompson) brings English into the fold, he of course reverts to his signature bungling. The title character also reunites with his sidekick from the original 2003 film: his hapless partner and straight man Bough (Ben Miller). Soon enough, the agents set off to track down the bad guy (Jake Lacy), a hacker who has targeted British infrastructure. Director David Kerr allows Atkinson plenty of room to flex his comic muscle, and the 63-year-old actor delivers a brand of charming buffoonery that is a balm for these troubled times. When an insomniac Johnny mistakes an energy pill for a sleep aid, he does what any other sleepless secret agent might do: He goes out dancing, managing to evade the murderous plotting of an enemy agent (Olga Kurylenko). Does it matter that the joke repeats an episode from the 2011 film “Johnny English Reborn”? Hardly. Atkinson’s energy is that infectious. PAT PADUA (TWP)

EXPECTED RELEASE: Jan. 25

SUMMARY: In a film based (loosely, it seems) on a 2011 Mexican movie of the same name, Gina Rodriguez (TV’s “Jane the Virgin,” which is so good you have to watch it) stars as Gloria, an American who gets roped into doing dirty work for a Mexican drug cartel. It’s pretty much like “Jane the Virgin,” but much less dramatic. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) is a 12-year-old boy who pulls Excalibur from a stone and is immediately told to put it back because he’s going to poke someone’s eye out. He ignores this sage advice and decides to protect the planet from impending doom, conveniently ignoring the fact that his homework isn’t done yet. K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

ARRESTS

A special victim of overzealous toll enforcement

The one thing Cardi won’t share with us Cardi B told Apple Music host Ebro Darden on Wednesday that she has been offered over a million dollars for photos of her baby Kulture. “We just don’t wanna show our baby right now,” she said of her and husband Offset. “I got offered seven figures, but I’m just not ready yet.” Kulture was born in July, and Cardi and Offset have only shared pictures of the baby’s hands and feet on social media. (EXPRESS)

Police arrested Ice-T after he failed to pay a toll in New York on Wednesday. Authorities say the actor and rapper was ticketed for theft of services when he drove through an E-ZPass lane on the George Washington Bridge connecting New Jersey and New York. The 60-year-old, whose real name is Tracy Marrow, was driving a new McLaren sports car and was also ticketed for not having license plates and registration. Ice-T reportedly forgot his electronic toll transponder and has them for his other vehicles. Ice-T later tweeted: “I love how people think just because I ACT like a cop on SVU I get special treatment from real cops.” (AP)

‘Queer Eye’ food expert now making guac for one

They’re just like us! They leave the tags on!

Antoni Porowski and his boyfriend of seven years, Joey Krietemeyer, have split, Us Weekly reported. A source told the magazine that the “Queer Eye” food and wine expert and the art director broke up two months ago. “It was very amicable. They’re still friends. It was a clean split,” the source said. Porowski told Vulture in February that he and Krietemeyer were “basically married.” (EXPRESS)

A garment tag attached to Meghan Markle’s dress was visible when she arrived Thursday at the Fua’amotu Airport in Tonga with Prince Harry. The tag became the subject of many headlines. E! News called it a “fashion faux pas.” E! also reported that the dress, which costs $515, had sold out at U.K. department store Harrod’s. The Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry are on their first international tour as a married couple. (EXPRESS)
