Police who caught three teenagers with 48 stolen pumpkins asked residents of Maryland Heights, Mo., to view a “pumpkin lineup” online to see if their Halloween squash were among those recovered. After the pumpkins began vanishing last week, police tracked down the boys and their SUV, which an officer said was crammed “top-tobottom orange” with pumpkins. Residents have since begun to retrieve the stolen goods. (AP)

An absent-minded shopper at a grocery store in Portland, Maine, took somebody else’s cart with a sleeping baby inside, causing a lockdown and a police investigation last week. Police said the shopper was mortified when he realized his error but didn’t bother to alert anyone. Instead, he left the cart in another part of the store and retrieved his own cart. Store video backed up his claim. The baby, ensconced in a car seat, never woke up. (AP)

Police in Asheville, N.C., said a housekeeper cleaning a room at the Rodeway Inn and Suites called officers Monday to remove an uninvited guest: a 5-foot boa constrictor in the bed. The reptile’s owner told police he had taken along “Chuck” while visiting a friend at the motel and Chuck got lost, UPI reported. The snake was on the loose until the maid found it slithering between the bedsheets. (EXPRESS)

This mural spreads love

DENIED Instagram partnered with Dallas Clayton for Union Market’s new mural.

Parks service rejects permit for Mall statue

Union Market, 1309 Fifth St. NE

How did Instagram approach you to do this #KindComments wall? I tour around and paint murals on things all over. Instagram and I have been friends for a while. They were doing this mural campaign, #KindComments, and they reached out. It just felt like a perfect synergy. I have a tattoo of your art. How do you feel about people tattooing your work on them? I am amazed every time it happens. It’s really kind of a beautiful thing. I live in Los Angeles and a lot of people there are actors or pretenders for a living,

ya know? And sometimes when you’re a fan of them, you’re not really a fan of them. You’re a fan of someone they played a long time ago. And so, I feel like when people say that they’re a fan or that they like what I do, it’s saying that they like what I believe in. ... It doesn’t feel like if you had a tattoo of Teen Wolf, something that’s a fictional creation. What’s your favorite way to spread kindness? I think just through humanity, right? Like, just try to interact with everyone on a daily basis, the way I hope they would interact

RACHEL ORR

Instagram is on a mission to “turn walls in cities around the world into colorful beacons inspiring #KindComments.” To that end, it has partnered with artists to paint murals in select cities. Washington’s Union Market is home to one of those murals, created by children’s book author Dallas Clayton, who unveiled his work with the help of local artists earlier this month. Clayton invited anyone who wanted to help him paint the mural, so I picked up a paintbrush and worked alongside him as he answered a few questions. RACHEL ORR (FOR EXPRESS) with me. To try to shake people up at every possible turn. To get them out of what they think a traditional interaction should be. Maybe even to recognize that the smallest transactions, that even within the grocery store, or the line at the DMV, that there’s still joy to be made. What is something that keeps you up at night? If you mean something that I think about often, you know, the fact that this could all be a hologram. The fact that we don’t really know why we’re here or what we’re doing or that we spend all this time instituting and then trying to keep systems

operational that ultimately built a greater illusion. Not to get too trippy. Why are we here? What are we doing?

The National Park Service has denied a permit to activists wanting to place a 45-foot statue of a naked woman on the Mall near the Washington Monument. Organizers of next month’s three-day Catharsis on the Mall festival wanted to bring the statue, R-Evolution, to the mall for four months. Rick Obernesser, acting regional director of the Park Service, ruled there were concerns about the statue’s height and the effect it could have on the Mall’s turf. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

What was your favorite children’s book as a kid? I really like [Shel Silverstein’s] “The Giving Tree.” I think it’s super-important, but I think Dr. Seuss is also a real genius. How do you feel about having been compared to a modern-day Dr. Seuss? I do not mind that in that bands don’t mind being compared to The Beatles, I’m sure. So, it’s hilarious, but I’ll take it.

Dissent in Trump era THE DISTRICT An hour before dawn on Oct. 6, Robby Diesu directed a trailer onto the Mall near the Washington Monument. At a spot with a good sightline to the White House, he and a small crew set up a 160-square-foot video screen, hooked it to a laptop and hit play. What ran on the screen for the next 12 hours was a relentless rewind of Donald Trump’s infamous “Access Hollywood” tape,” the hot-mic remarks that had roiled the campaign one year earlier. The three minutes of vulgarity-laced chatter (“Grab them by the p---y. You can do anything.”) looped over and over through the day, within view of the West Wing and well beyond, thanks to countless mentions in the mainstream news media and on social media. “The point of actions is to create conflict with your target, and the target here is the president of the United States being a sexual predator,” said Diesu, a professional protest organizer with the DC Action Lab. This is Washington protest in the age of Trump, when public actions increasingly combine performance art and catchy visuals to toss a made-to-go-viral insult straight at the president. It is trolling as dissent. In the year since Trump won, activists have expanded the age-old Washington reliables of marches and rallies with moreunconventional ploys: queer dance parties, high-wire banner stunts, animated graffiti projected onto the walls of Trump’s D.C. hotel. In volume and style, the digital age and the president’s own pugilistic instincts have created a unique moment in movements.

Since the election, viral visual taunts have become a popular way to protest the president

Activists have found new ways to protest President Trump, including hanging a huge “Resist” banner, illuminating the side of Trump’s hotel, playing the “Access Hollywood” tape on the Mall, and inflating a giant Trump-like chicken.

“There was outrage against [Richard] Nixon and against [Lyndon] Johnson, but those protests were mostly against policy,” said Michael Kazin, a historian of social movements at Georgetown University. “Now the focus is to a great extent on the president’s personality.” Even traditional protests seek a visually viral taunt. The Women’s March, which drew hundreds of thousands to the Mall a day after Trump’s inauguration, was forever branded by the thousands of hand-knit pink triangular hats worn as a defiant symbol of Trump’s “grab them” comment. A towering inflatable chicken with Trumpian Orange hair made an appearance outside the White House in August (get yours on eBay for $498). After the president announced he was pulling the United States out of the Paris climate accord in June, Diesu helped sneak dozens of protesters into the lobby of Trump International Hotel, where, at 7 a.m., they pulled out alarm clocks and

air horns to “wake up” guests to the dangers of global warming. The hotel, emblazoned with the president’s name, has emerged as a second White House, one without fences and Secret Service agents. D.C. artist Robin Bell has projected animated jeers onto the building, including “Pay Trump bribes here” and “The president of the United States is a known racist and a Nazi sympathizer.” Other protests take a guerrilla approach. In January, Greenpeace sent seven climbers up a

30-story construction crane to unfurl a 70-foot “Resist” banner that, visually, seemed to hang directly over the White House. “With the framing of that image, we controlled our own message,” said James Brady, a District-based Greenpeace activist. “It was not possible to re-caption that photo.” The new age of protesting has been good for the old art of making protest puppets. “It’s always been the case: A picture is worth a thousand words, and a puppet is worth a thousand times that,” said Nadine Bloch, a Takoma Park, Md., resident who made an enormous paper effigy of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and who has been one of D.C.’s go-to makers of protest puppets since the Reagan era. “And if you can roll it down the street, smash it, it can be worth 1,000 times more.” And if one of those makes the presidential Twitter feed, consider Trump trolled. Gillespie gets a Trump boost over Twitter VIRGINIA President Trump on Thursday gave his strongest endorsement yet of the Trump-shy Republican gubernatorial candidate in Virginia. In a pair of tweets, Trump said Ed Gillespie would improve Virginia’s economy, be “strong on crime” and “might even save our great statues/heritage.” Trump also attacked Gillespie’s Democratic opponent, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, as being “VERY weak” on crime and someone who “doesn’t even show up to work.” “Ed Gillespie will turn the really bad Virginia economy #’s around, and fast,” Trump tweeted. They were Trump’s most expansive comments about this year’s only competitive governor’s race, a contest that could serve as an early referendum on the president’s political popularity. White House officials have said there are no current plans for Trump to campaign alongside Gillespie before the Nov. 7 election. Democrats have made the president a key talking point in the Virginia campaign, hopeful that anti-Trump sentiment will help Northam in the only southern state Trump lost last year. “Speaking of not showing up, Ed Gillespie treats you like a communicable disease and you haven’t shown up for the most important race of ‘17,” Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe responded to Trump in a tweet of his own. ALAN SUDERMAN (AP)

local Renovations of nearly $1 billion are scheduled to begin next summer MUSEUMS The Smithsonian will begin an almost $1 billion renovation of the National Air and Space Museum next summer with the closing of the western side of the building, officials announced Wednesday. Museum officials are waiting for Congress to provide funding for the first part of a seven-year, $650 million renovation that will be completed in stages to allow

the city’s most-visited museum to remain open. Smithsonian Secretary David Skorton said officials are cautiously optimistic that their request will be granted, but he said it is unclear if the project will move forward without it. The renovation will be the most expensive capital project undertaken by the museum complex, with a price tag almost double the construction cost of the $540 million National Museum of African American History and Culture. building, which opened in 1976, and the replacement of its marble exterior. In addition to the $650 million in federal aid, the Smithsonian has pledged to raise $250 million in private donations to update the galleries. During construction, many of the museum’s popular artifacts, including the Wright Flyer, the Spirit of St. Louis and the Mercury Friendship 7, will remain on view. The museum attracts about 7 million visitors annually. Officials expect new exhibitions to open starting in 2021.

A Baltimore man accused of crashing through a gate at the National Security Agency was convicted of conspiracy, carjacking and destruction of government property in federal court this week. He was driving a stolen vehicle in October 2015 when he was spotted at Arundel Mills Mall, setting off a police chase. He then crashed into a gate at the NSA at Fort Meade and hid overnight in a storm drain before being found and arrested.

HEALTH In ringing and personal terms, President Trump on Thursday pledged to “overcome addiction in America,” declaring the opioid crisis a nationwide public health emergency and announcing new steps to combat what he described as the worst drug crisis in U.S. history. Trump’s declaration, which will be effective for 90 days and can be renewed, will allow the government to redirect resources, including toward expanded access to medical services in rural areas. But it won’t bring new dollars to fight a scourge that kills nearly 100 Americans a day. “As Americans, we cannot allow this to continue,” Trump said in a speech at the White House. The president stopped short of declaring a more sweeping national state of emergency, which he previously said he would do, that would have given states access to funding from the federal Disaster Relief Fund, just as they would have following a hurricane. Officials said they would urge Congress, during end-of-the year budget negotiations, to add new cash to a public health emergency fund that Congress hasn’t replenished for years. The Public Health Emergency Fund currently contains just $57,000,

according to the Department of Health and Human Services. “How can you say it’s an emergency if we’re not going to put a new nickel in it?” said Dr. Joseph Parks, medical director of the nonprofit National Council for Behavioral Health, which advocates for addiction treatment providers. Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi called the new declaration “words without the money.” Trump’s audience Thursday included parents who lost children to drug overdoses, people who have struggled with addiction and first responders who used overdose reversal drugs to save lives. Trump also spoke personally about his own family’s experience

with addiction: His older brother, Fred Jr., died after struggling with alcoholism. It’s the reason the president does not drink. Trump described his brother as a “great guy,” with a personality “much better than mine.” “But he had a problem, he had a problem with alcohol,” he said. “I learned because of Fred.” Trump said he hoped a massive advertising campaign, which sounded reminiscent of the 1980s “Just Say No” campaign, might have a similar impact. “ If we c a n teach you ng people, and people generally, not to start, it’s really, really easy not to take ’em,” he said. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

Researchers reported Thursday in the journal Current Biology that the Sinosauropteryx, the first feathered dinosaur, had a striped tail and a “bandit mask” like a raccoon. University of Bristol paleontologists analyzed fossils and specimens of the dinosaur to get a clearer image of its appearance. They also determined that the animal was camouflaged: Its belly was light and its back was dark, a pattern to disguise the 4-foot-long creature from carnivores and help them sneak up on prey. The authors said the face stripes are common among “mid-level” predators such as badgers and raccoons, but at just under 6 pounds — about the weight of a Chihuahua — the dinosaur wouldn’t have been a major threat. Trump holds back some JFK files NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump acted Thursday to block the release of hundreds of records on the John F. Kennedy assassination, bending to CIA and FBI appeals to keep them secret. “I have no choice,” Trump said in a memo, according to White House officials. He was placing those files under a six-month review while letting 2,800 other records come out Thursday evening, meeting a deadline to honor a law mandating their release. Officials said Trump will impress upon federal agencies that JFK files should stay secret after the six-month review “only in the rarest cases.” Much of Thursday passed with

nothing from the White House or National Archives except silence, leaving unclear how the government would comply with a law requiring the records to come out by the end of the day Thursday — unless Trump had been persuaded by intelligence agencies to hold some back. White House officials said the FBI and CIA made the most

requests within the government to withhold some information. No blockbusters had been expected in the last trove of secret files regarding Kennedy’s assassination Nov. 22, 1963, given a statement months ago by the Archives that it assumed the records would be “tangential” to what’s known about the killing. But for historians, it’s a chance

to answer lingering questions, put some unfounded conspiracy theories to rest and perhaps give life to other theories — or none of that, if the material adds little to the record. Experts said publication of the last trove of evidence could help allay suspicions of a conspiracy — at least for some. “As long as the government is withholding documents like these, it’s going to fuel suspicion that there is a smoking gun out there about the Kennedy assassination,” said Patrick Maney, a presidential historian at Boston College. The collection includes more than 3,100 records — comprising hundreds of thousands of pages — that have never been seen by the public. About 30,000 documents were released previously — with redactions. LAURIE KELLMAN

House Republicans agreed to budget legislation Thursday, narrowly overcoming internal dissension and Democratic opposition to clear a major obstacle in the GOP’s quest to pass large-scale tax cuts. The budget legislation authorizes special procedures that will allow Republicans to reduce federal revenue over the coming decade by as much as $1.5 trillion without Democratic help. “It shows the strength of the willingness to get tax reform done,” House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said of the 216-212 vote. While congressional tax writers have been quietly crafting the legislation behind closed doors for months, Thursday’s vote formally kicks off the bill-writing process. While House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., has called for the bill to clear the House by Thanksgiving, the Senate is expected to engage in a parallel process that could stretch into December. If both chambers succeed in passing legislation, a conference would resolve the differences between the chambers. No Democrats voted for the budget Thursday, nor did 20 Republicans. Twelve Republicans from the high-tax states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania voted no because the plan would scale back the income-tax deduction for state and local taxes. MIKE DEBONIS

Ad firms seek diversity After several marketing blunders, companies make hiring minorities a top priority

WASHINGTONPOST.COM WONKBLOG

BUSINESS CoverGirl executive Ukonwa Ojo was struck when a team from an ad agency entered the room to pitch ideas for revamping the cosmetic company’s image. For the first time in Ojo’s more than 20-year business career, she found herself working with an AfricanAmerican creative director. That meeting would ultimately result in a marketing campaign that challenges conventional ideas about beauty. It features celebrity women from a spectrum of races, ages and professions, including Issa Rae of HBO’s “Insecure,” motorcycle racer Shelina Moreda, celebrity chef Ayesha Curry and dietitian Maye Musk, 69. “To have an African-American creative director walk in the room and present this to me, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, this is amazing,’ ” said Ojo, who is Nigerian-American. “I think we can see the power of the work because of that.” Diversity in the advertising industry is becoming a higher priority for consumer product companies as they try to reach a new generation of customers with evolving sensibilities on ethnicity, age, gender and sexuality. Many companies have come to believe that having people with a variety of backgrounds in the room can not only produce a smarter marketing campaign but also help avoid the kind of blunders Kellogg and Dove were recently accused of in today’s politically combustible environment. Despite efforts by Madison Avenue to ramp up recruiting of minorities, just 7 percent of the 67,000 people working as advertising and promotion managers in the U.S. in 2016 were African-American, less than 5 percent were Hispanic and about 1 percent were of Asian descent, according to the U.S.

Labor Department. In the case of CoverGirl’s makeover, which replaced the company’s familiar “Easy, Breezy, Beautiful” tagline with “I Am What I Makeup,” the team from the ad agency Droga5 had two black creative directors, Shannon Washington and Ray Smiling. “The team that worked on this idea and this campaign came from very different backgrounds — from a male and female point of view, different races, different ages,” Droga5 CEO Sarah Thompson said. “I think that more than before, what’s important is getting that narrative, that story, right and really pressure-testing. Is it authentic? Is there anything that is going to be misinterpreted?” Having more diversity is also seen as a safeguard at a time when companies are under pressure to produce lots of video and other marketing content quickly and cheaply on social media, often with no time to test everything out on focus groups.

Specialized agencies Aside from trying to diversify their own ranks, some marketers are turning for help to small agencies that cater to specific ethnic groups. Being Latino, a social media marketing company, has crafted ads for Bud Light, Snickers and CocaCola. “My entire company, every employee comes from the culture that we are trying to appeal to,” said Being Latino founder Lance Rios. “We know the do’s and the don’ts.” (AP)

“In the good old days, you would have the time to take your TV ad or print campaign and do further testing,” said Gene Fischer, senior vice president of media innovation at Publicis Health Media. “The world of social media doesn’t allow for that.” On Wednesday, Kellogg apologized after the artwork on its Corn Pops cereal boxes was attacked as racist. The box shows cartoon Corn Pops hanging out

in a mall. The only brown one depicted is a janitor. Dove was criticized earlier this month over a commercial for a body wash. A short version of the video on Facebook showed a black woman taking off her shirt to reveal a white woman, who then removed her top to reveal a woman with a brown complexion. Social media users accused Dove of suggesting black skin is dirty. Dove pulled the video, while Kellogg said new artwork for the cereal box will soon reach stores. Other brands, including Pepsi, Gap and Nivea, have faced similar controversies. Before joining CoverGirl, Ojo was senior global director at Unilever, the company that owns Dove. She said her former company “always had the best intentions,” but “as humans we always have the opportunities to make a mistake.” She added: “It can minimize the chances if you have the right people around the table.” ALEXANDRA OLSON (AP)

Americans aren’t forsaking fast food just yet. Three years after analysts predicted that Chipotle would be the death of McDonald’s and other fast-food stalwarts, the onetime fast-casual darling is in free fall — and McDonald’s is reporting its third consecutive quarter of solid same-store sales. Since 2015, fast-food chains have outperformed fast-casual and sit-down establishments, according to an analysis by Nation’s Restaurant News. The development has defied some analysts’ expectations and speaks to the hold that fast food has on the American psyche. “There’s still a desire for foods that provide familiarity and comfort,” said Melissa Abbott of the Hartman Group, a restaurant industry consulting firm. As Abbott and other analysts describe it, the enduring appeal of fast-food chains goes far beyond taste: They still boast the holy trinity of convenience, low cost and familiarity. Fast-food chains also have invested in online and mobile ordering and touch-screen kiosks to speed service. And they have emphasized discounts on core products, sometimes offering a “meal” for $4 or less. By comparison, a single burrito at Chipotle — which has faced higher ingredient costs and a lingering food safety scandal — can cost $7 to $10. CAITLIN DEWEY

nation+world KENYA Kenya held a rerun of its botched presidential election Thursday, but the opposition boycotted it and clashes broke out between police and protesters. The incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta, was viewed as almost certain to win because of a boycott by opposition candidate Raila Odinga. He had claimed that it was impossible to hold a credible election and told his followers that they were now part of a “resistance movement.” In parts of Nairobi and western Kenya on Thursday, Odinga’s

supporters engaged in running battles with police, lobbing rocks at officers who responded with tear gas and, occasionally, live bullets. At least four people were shot and killed by police. Election officials announced Thursday that voting in four counties would have to be postponed until Saturday because of violence. Kenya has been seen as a maturing democracy and a key Western ally in a region troubled by war, undemocratic strongmen and an Islamist insurgency in neighboring Somalia. But the last several months have cast doubt

In September, when the Supreme Court annulled August’s presidential election, which Kenyatta won by about 10 percentage points, many saw it as triumph of judicial independence. But that ruling set off one of the most tumultuous periods in Kenya’s recent political history, leaving Kenyans with little faith in their country’s ability to conduct a fair election. 3 THINGS TO WATCH

Cowboys gain steam

REDSKINS VS. COWBOYS | 4:25 P.M. SUNDAY, FOX

Running until he’s stopped

The Cowboys ended a losing streak last week, breaking a two-game skid by hanging 40 points and 501 yards of offense on the 49ers. Here are a few things to watch as Dallas visits FedEx Field. (EXPRESS)

3 Hyped matchup

NFL Uncertainty has loomed over Ezekiel Elliott since Aug. 11, when the NFL suspended him for six games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. But the Cowboys’ second-year running back hasn’t missed a start, granted a series of procedural reprieves as he fights the conclusion and consequences of a year-long NFL investigation that found he used physical force against a former girlfriend in July 2016. The next step in the process comes Monday — the day after the Redskins (3-3) host the Cowboys (3-3) in an NFC East battle for second place in the division — at a hearing for a preliminary injunction. If the injunction is not issued, it’s likely

his suspension would begin the following week. If so, it would be the third time the NFL will have attempted to enforce the suspension, after the previous instances — ahead of Week 1 and again before the Cowboys’ Week 6 bye — were delayed by legal maneuvering from the NFLPA that continues to play out in the court system. Asked during a conference call Wednesday how he has handled the situation, Elliott said: “I take it week by week. Every week I prepare like I’m going to play.” Beyond that, he had no interest in elaborating. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett painted the picture of a laser-focused back when he was asked how Elliott has handled the matter. “Obviously there’s a lot of

Elliott remains productive during his ongoing fight to avoid suspension Elliott vs. the Redskins Ezekiel Elliott led the NFL in rushing as a rookie last year, padding his stats with two solid outings in wins over Washington. In those games, a 27-23 Cowboys victory in September and a 31-26 Dallas win in November, Elliott rushed for 180 yards on 41 carries — 4.4 yards per rush — with three TDs. (EXPRESS)

things going on off the field with him, but you wouldn’t know it if you were around him … every day,” Garrett said. “His preparation’s excellent. He always seems focused and dialed in.” Last week against the 49ers, Elliott rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns and turned a screen pass into a 72-yard TD catch.

Through six games this year, Elliott has 540 yards rushing and four TDs. That’s more than twice the production of leading Redskins rusher Chris Thompson, who has 213 yards and two scores. Dallas boasts the NFL’s second-ranked rushing attack, averaging 147.5 yards per game. The Redskins’ ground game ranks 14th (114.8 yards per game). Elliott said he hadn’t noticed that NFL defenses play him any differently in Year 2 now that they have a season’s worth of film of his performance. “We approach every game the same,” Elliott said. “We want to go in there and run the ball. They stack the box and make it tough for us to run, but that’s just how it has been.” LIZ CLARKE

Josh Norman is nursing a rib fracture but may be able to return just in time to cover Dez Bryant, who had 174 yards receiving in two games against the Redskins last year.

2 Inside pressure Matt Ioannidis is now a force on the defensive line for the Redskins, but it will be tough to get a push on Zack Martin, graded as the NFL’s No. 2 guard by Pro Football Focus.

1 Protecting Cousins Cowboys defensive end Demarcus Lawrence ranks second in the league with 9.5 sacks and will be teeing off on an injury-ravaged Redskins offensive line.

Marshawn Lynch will be serving a one-game suspension for shoving an official when the Raiders play in Buffalo on Sunday, but the running back has been staying in shape thanks to help from his high school. Lynch posted video on Instagram from a practice at Oakland Technical, where the 31-year-old donned a helmet and pads to run plays against teenagers. At one point, it took five high schoolers to take down Lynch. (TWP) Warriors host Wizards on Friday (10:30 p.m., NBCSWA)

Watson’s rookie tour reaches toughest stop Houston QB will face No. 1 scoring defense in boisterous Seattle

at Lions, 8:30 p.m. Sunday, NBC

Everything’s coming up JuJu this week. Fans helped him recover a stolen bicycle after a plea on social media, and his participation in Pittsburgh’s offense figures to increase with Martavis Bryant’s disciplinary benching.

Deshaun Watson is the first rookie in NFL history with three straight games of three or more TD passes.

TALL TASK

CB Morris Claiborne, Jets vs. Falcons, 1 p.m. Sunday

The frustrated Falcons have lost three straight and scored just seven points against the Patriots last week. Claiborne has to keep up with All-Pro receiver Julio Jones, who is the key to reigniting Atlanta’s offense.

WILD CARD

Wentz was last year when we played him,” Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman said. “He doesn’t always make the greatest decisions because he’s a rookie. … But he’s poised. He doesn’t get rattled easily. The moment is not too big for him.” Watson is on pace for one of the best rookie seasons by a quarterback, especially considering he didn’t start the opener. His 15 TD passes — tied with Tom Brady and Alex Smith for second-most in the NFL behind Wentz (17) — are the most by a rookie in his team’s first six games of a season. He’s the first rookie in league history with three straight games of three or more TD passes. Twelve of his touchdown

passes have come in the past three games, in which he has posted a 118.3 passer rating and tossed just two interceptions. What Watson has accomplished is special. Doing it against a defense of Seattle’s caliber is a significant next step. Seattle has a pretty good quarterback of its own, one with many of the same attributes as Watson. It’s no wonder that Russell Wilson is regularly included in the clips Houston coach Bill O’Brien shows his quarterbacks. Wilson threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s 24-7 win over the Giants. He has 10 touchdown passes and three interceptions in the past four games. TIM BOOTH (AP)

NFL Deshaun Watson was brilliant against New England. He handled Tennessee and Cleveland, and threw five touchdown passes against Kansas City. The rookie has done all the Texans could ask of him through the first five starts of his career. For his next act, Watson will be asked to solve the NFL’s best scoring defense (15.7 points per game) that features some of the best defensive backs of this generation at CenturyLink Field, one of the loudest, most hostile road venues in the league. “You play music [in practice] and try to create noise, but you really can’t prep yourself for it,” Watson said. The biggest test thus far in Watson’s rookie season arrives Sunday when the Texans (3-3) travel to Seattle (4-2). After a shaky start, the Seahawks have won three straight — two on the road — and now get four of the next six games at home with road trips to Arizona and San Francisco. The Seahawks respect Watson, but they’re prepared to introduce him to one of the league’s premier defenses. “He’s poised. It’s like (Carson)

WORLD SERIES GAME 3 | DODGERS AT ASTROS, 8:09 P.M. FRIDAY, FOX

Roberts justified in defeat

Manager put Dodgers in position to win even with early hook for Hill

Marwin Gonzalez’s ninth-inning homer off Kenley Jansen helped the Astros tie the World Series 1-1.

3:30 p.m. Saturday, Fox

Both teams are undefeated in conference play, so whoever wins has the inside track to make the Big Ten championship, and possibly the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 2 last year when Penn State scored a 24-21 upset.

ANALYSIS In a baseball postseason that has been more or less a massacre for managers, with three of them let go at the end of their teams’ playoff runs, it was perhaps inevitable that the entirety of the Dodgers’ failures against the Astros in Game 2 of the World Series would be pinned to the chest of manager Dave Roberts. Houston’s 7-6 win took 11 innings. It was a wild and manylayered affair that saw a playoff record eight home runs hit, with five of them coming in extra innings. But, according to experts in the broadcast booth, the Twittersphere and living rooms across Los Angeles, it boiled down to Roberts pulling starting pitcher Rich Hill too soon and generally committing enough acts of ignorance that warrant his joining his recently fired brethren — Dusty Baker in Washington, John Farrell in Boston and Joe Girardi in New York — among the ranks of the unemployed. But that analysis overlooks one fact: Roberts had Kenley Jansen on the mound with a one-run lead in the ninth inning. Anything that happened after that — and so many things happened, beginning with the homer Jansen surrendered to Marwin Gonzalez — was at some level out of his hands. Getting a lead to Jansen, the

Don’t miss these 3 games this weekend

best closer on the planet, is Roberts’ chief goal in every postseason game. They were 98-0 this season when leading after eight. But sometimes, baseball happens. Sometimes the pitch that is the single most-unhittable in baseball, Jansen’s cut fastball, goes where it isn’t supposed to, over the heart of the plate, and it is then propelled a very long way. The repercussions of Wednesday’s events will be felt for the rest of the series — starting with Game 3 in Houston on Friday night. Jansen has lost a bit of his air of invincibility. The Astros gained an immeasurable dose of confidence as they head home, where they’re 6-0 in these playoffs, and send

“The bottom line is I’ll take Kenley any day of the week with a one-run lead going into the ninth inning.” MANAGER DAVE ROBERTS, talking about decisions to burn through his bullpen and rely on Kenley Jansen

Lance McCullers Jr. to the mound against Yu Darvish. Consider that in Game 2, Roberts pulled his starter after just four innings and 60 pitches, largely because the Dodgers’

front office believes it’s bad to let a pitcher face an opposing lineup for a third time. In a sense, it was a decision made over Roberts’ head. And then came a flurry of bullpen moves — five different pitchers in a span of eight hitters at one point. Each move, taken on its own, seemed defensible in the moment, but viewed in whole, it appeared highly aggressive. But before you convince yourself Roberts blew a big one, remember the bare truth of Game 2: Jansen was on the mound in the ninth inning with a one-run lead. If managing in the postseason is a high-wire act, Roberts was already safely on the other side.

The Wolfpack carry a six-game winning streak into their first visit to South Bend, Ind. Junior tailback Nyheim Hines, below, has run for 352 yards in his past three games. Notre Dame blew out then-No. 11 USC 49-14 last week.

Yankees won’t retain Girardi

Matt Damon has really been working on his shocked face.

These picket fences aren’t so perfect

FILM REVIEW An uneasy, tonally awkward testament to the sourball heart of the American Dream, George Clooney’s “Suburbicon” — partly written by the Coen brothers — can’t be described as a home run. But as an artifact of its era, it bristles with genuine discernment and rage that cannot be denied. As “Suburbicon” opens, the audience views the Edenic title community, a model of postwar prosperity and promise that serves as a “melting pot” of diversity — meaning white families from New York, Ohio and even Mississippi. The Dick-andJane vibe comes to a screeching halt when the postman stops by the Meyers home, only to discover that the African-American woman who answers the door isn’t their maid, but Mrs. Meyers herself.

Impassioned meetings, petitions and bursts of vigilante violence ensue, while the Meyerses’ neighbors, the Lodges, face their own threats. While young Nicky Lodge (Noah Jupe) embarks on a friendship with Andy Meyers (Tony Espinosa), his parents, Gardner and Rose (Matt Damon and Julianne Moore), become embroiled in a bizarre crime. With its “Mad Man”-era aesthetic and Alexandre Desplat’s marvelous orchestral score, “Suburbicon” exerts a seductive, fetishistic pull, made all the more delicious by the fact that Moore is cast in a “Vertigo”-like double role. Clooney’s allegorical point — that the performative wholesomeness of the Lodge household is just as bogus as the self-proclaimed virtue of the racists terrorizing the black family next door — is an astute one. But the movie’s aim falters at crucial junctures. When meeting with reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, Clooney noted that

he re-cut “Suburbicon” after the 2016 presidential election — but long before this summer’s racist march in Charlottesville — fired by his own ire and sense of betrayal, and his sense that the film needed to be angrier, less silly. “Suburbicon” nonetheless can’t

navigate the tricky tonal shifts without feeling disjointed and divided against itself. Simultaneously, Mr. and Mrs. Meyers (Leith M. Burke and Karimah Westbrook) turn out to be strangely marginal to a film that begins to suffer from the very thing it abhors. If “Suburbicon’s” intentions are noble in focusing on white pathology, it does so at the narrative expense of African-American characters. This isn’t to say that a bitter truth can’t be found in the midst of “Suburbicon’s” carnage. Clooney has made a film just as confounding, disturbing, messed up and infuriating as the era it reflects — for better and for worse. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Ryan Murphy’s ‘Pose’ sets record for trans series leads

“Pose,” a new FX series from “American Horror Story” and “Feud” showrunner Ryan Murphy, has cast five transgender actors as leads — the most trans actors ever cast in series-regular roles for a scripted show. FX announced Thursday that MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross will co-star in “Pose,” which follows life in 1980s New York. ”Thank You for Your Service,” an observant drama about returning soldiers, conveys the feelings of guilt and shame — to say nothing of post-traumatic stress — that often pervade their lives. If the film does justice to veterans — and it does — it’s not because it offers the possibility of healing, but something more important: an acknowledgment of, and empathy for, their experience. ‘Wonderstruck’ PG, 117 min.

The parallel stories in Todd Haynes’ “Wonderstruck” follow two deaf runaways 50 years apart. One story is a black-and-white silent film; the other channels the bright colors of the 1970s. Though the film’s arc lacks some momentum, a mystery propels the drama toward a visually gorgeous finale — and a sense of balance as the two narratives finally meet. STEPHANIE MERRY (TWP)

A surgeon and a mysterious teen cross paths in “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” Or DO they?! (They do.)

‘All I See Is You’ remains murky up to the end

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Strange danger: Is the ‘Lobster’ guy caught in a trap? “The Lobster” was one of my favorite movies of 2016. I loved the inventive idea (single people check into a resort where they’re turned into the animal of their choice if they don’t find a soul mate), the humor, the sweetness at its core. I also recommended it to about four people total, because it is messed UP. The work of Greek writerdirector Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Lobster,” “Dogtooth”) is polarizing, and his latest, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” is no exception. The hallmarks of Lanthimos’ style are very much present: There is an element of the magical that is never

explained, the actors deliver most of their lines in an entirely flat voice, and an overwhelming sense of dread pervades even the most mundane scenes. You could argue for an eternity about whether Lanthimos’ films are brilliant or terrible, but the one thing that’s certain is they’re not for everyone. In “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” a man (Colin Farrell, who, as in “The Lobster,” really excels in weirdness) is terrorized by a teenage boy (Barry Keoghan, a study in slackjawed terror). The less said about the plot the better, as the movie spins from revenge story to supernatural thriller to the most dementedly hilarious brother-and-sister fight in recent cinematic history. “The

Deadline: Gabrielle Union to star in “Bad Boys” spinoff TV series

Killing of a Sacred Deer” is like a visceral, disturbing fairy tale — only here, instead of biting a magic apple, one character chomps a chunk out of his own arm and then yells, “IT’S A METAPHOR.” Like I said, not for everyone. I don’t know if Lanthimos is a great filmmaker. I don’t think he’s a terrible one, but I worry that his cinematic style will become a parody of itself. Of course, there are plenty of directors who have their signature touches; it’s just that some of them use them as accessories to decorate and enhance their films (Alfred Hitchcock and his icy blondes, Amy Heckerling and her soundtracks), while some attempt to build a

‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ (R, 116 min.) DIRECTOR: Yorgos Lanthimos STARS: Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan, Alicia Silverstone IN A NUTSHELL: A fatherless teen insinuates himself into the idyllic suburban life of a renowned surgeon and his ophthalmologist wife.

body of work defined by those touches (Zack Snyder with his grim lighting and DEAFENING SOUNDTRACKS, Robert Zemeckis and his “look what I can do!” long shots). This is Lanthimos’ second English-language film, and both feature relatively big stars at the center — Rachel Weisz in “The Lobster,” Nicole Kidman in “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and Farrell in both. The films strike many of the same chords, with scenes that had me peeking through my fingers while simultaneously laughing and muttering, “What the HELL?!” I’m glad to see Lanthimos enjoying success, and I’m not saying he should abandon his realm of hilarious horror or “go mainstream.” I want him to embrace his style, but also to expand on it — to get even sharper at illuminating the absurdity of the world, at finding the moments of salvation in a time of despair, at making his audience gasp-laugh. He has his style; the question is whether it will become his straightjacket. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

FILM REVIEW The thriller-ish premise of “All I See Is You” sounds familiar enough: A woman, blind since a childhood accident that killed her parents, undergoes surgery to restore sight in one eye, only to discover that her seemingly devoted husband is ... well, what exactly? This and more secrets remain unclear, even up to the film’s end. Blake Lively plays Gina, who, as the film opens, is living with her adoring husband, James (Jason Clarke), in Bangkok. Director Marc Forster juices up the mysterious atmosphere from the get-go, shooting with a blurry, impressionist evocation of blindness. Once Gina regains her sight, her relationship with James immediately starts to deteriorate. Clearly, there was something unhealthy about their relationship all along: a power imbalance that has uncomfortably shifted now. But Forster’s Hitchcockian camera keeps drawing our attention to the eyedrops Gina’s doctor prescribed. Somehow Gina, who’s still drifting from her husband, is going blind again. Whether it’s because of tainted drops — and who is doing the tainting and why — is an enigma, albeit not much of one. Despite its visual style and competent performances, “All I See is You” is unable to keep us guessing — or make us care — long enough to work up true suspense. EXPECTED RELEASE: Feb. 2

SUMMARY: A famed dressmaker (Daniel Day-Lewis) gets into a messed-up relationship with a model/ muse (Vicky Krieps) in the new film from Paul Thomas Anderson. Set in 1950s London, the film is full of cobbled streets, full skirts and the eternal truth that Daniel Day-Lewis can wear the heck out of some clothes. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Starting in 1884, Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) — as in the Winchester rifle — begins to build an insane mansion as an equally insane attempt to appease the ghosts of the people killed by her family’s guns. The NRA argues it is too soon to discuss the issue. K.P.K.

“Having a secretary of state curl up in the fetal position is not a comforting thought.”

Tony is always there to meet us with a smile and kind greeting. He truly brightens our day. Nice job, Tony!

@BUDDYSTONE, tweeting in response to a video clip of Secretary

of State Rex Tillerson while he was on a visit to Geneva on Thursday. While touring a nearby park, Tillerson stopped to look at a statue and quipped, “Some days I feel like I need to do that. Curl up in a ball.” It was a pretty candid admission from a secretary of state. @LoveBGees responded: “Most of America feels the same!” And @CahnEmily tweeted: “This is the most relatable and also the most awkward thing Rex Tillerson has ever said.”

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Make sure that anything that engages you for more time than expected is something of your choosing. Don’t let yourself be distracted. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) The difference between the genuine and the artificial will appear to you in stark relief today as you face a troubling situation. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) What you have to offer is worth more — and to more people — than what someone else has relied on for quite some time. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll want to have certain issues illuminated in new ways today — and you must lead the way. Others will follow if you carry the light.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

How many ways can you make the simplest statement mean different things? Today, what you say will enjoy a variety of interpretations.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

ARIES (March 21-April 19) What you do today to keep your emotions in check can be a learning situation for someone in your care. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Are you ready to take advantage of a situation someone else has created for you? You’ll be unprepared only if you haven’t paid attention. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ve come a long way, but there is still a long way for you to go. Take a close look at the path previously taken by someone you admire.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Food drama comes with no snacks After reports that Bobby Flay had quit his recurring role on “Iron Chef Showdown,” the chef has cleared the air. Flay reportedly wore a shirt that said, “This is my last Iron Chef battle ever” to an episode taping. He told People magazine that the shirt was a joke, and that he still would return to the series if asked. “In hindsight, it was probably not the best decision because it’s just creating confusion,” he said. Someone explained to Kit what sexism means In a new interview with The Guardian, Kit Harington walked back his 2016 comments that he has faced sexism in Hollywood. “I think what I meant was, being objectified,” he said. “Do I think my position is the same as a woman’s in society? No. They’re very different things, and I should have separated them. I was wrong.” (EXPRESS)

ARE THEY DATING?

Everyone’s least favorite news cycle is back! Exes Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are back in touch following Gomez’s kidney transplant this summer. “Selena is simply trying to make peace with Justin after her illness,” a source said, adding that the two singers occasionally run into each other at their church. A second source told the publication: “They realized it was time to grow past their history and move on.” (EXPRESS)

“[My husband] was like, ‘We should name it Dick with a silent ‘H.’ It’s just awful.”

Us Weekly reported that Iggy Azalea and New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. are dating. “They hook up, but are still hooking up with other people,” a source said. Rumors about the pair have swirled since May, when they were photographed with friends at a Los Angeles bowling alley. When asked about the rumors at the time, Azalea told TMZ, “I literally don’t even know Odell Beckham.” Azalea this summer released two singles from her long-delayed album “Digital Distortion,” and Beckham is sitting out the rest of the NFL season due to an ankle injury.
