Police in Kingsport, Tenn., say a half-naked woman fell twice through a restaurant’s ceiling and landed in its kitchen. Harley Morton, 26, was arrested Tuesday on charges including trespassing and disorderly conduct. A police report says a Cook Out employee called 911 when the naked bottom half of a woman dropped through the ceiling. Police say she may have gotten in via an A/C unit. Morton fell through again while an officer was on the roof. (AP)
Police say a baggage handler told them he was drunk when he fell asleep in a cargo hold and flew from Kansas City to Chicago. The plane left Kansas City on Saturday with the handler in a heated and pressurized cargo hold. He was found when the flight landed about an hour later at Chicago’s O’Hare airport. The handler told police he was intoxicated and had fallen asleep. No charges were filed, and he was sent back to Kansas City. (AP)

Teens dig up piece of history
Dominic Anderson, left, and Jared Phillips found the 6,000-year-old ax. GEORGE WASHINGTON’S MOUNT VERNON
MOUNT VERNON, VA. About 6,000 years ago, a precious stone ax that had been skillfully carved and shaped by Native Americans was lost on a ridge overlooking the Potomac River in Virginia. The ax, about 7 inches long, had been hewed and smoothed and was narrowed at one end where a wooden handle was attached. Its loss must have been keenly felt. Six millennia later, on Oct. 12, 2018, Dominic Anderson and Jared Phillips, high school seniors from Archbishop Hoban High School, in Akron, Ohio, were on an archaeological dig at George Washington’s estate at Mount Vernon, when a stone that looked like a big potato turned up in their sifting screen. Not sure what it was, they asked the Mount Vernon archaeologists working nearby. It was the lost ax. Officials at Mount Vernon announced details of the find Wednesday. They said it was a major discovery that helps take the story of the site far beyond

its place as the home of the first president. It “provides a window onto the lives of individuals who lived here nearly 6,000 years ago,” said Sean Devlin, Mount Vernon’s
curator of archaeological collections. “Artifacts such as this are a vital resource for helping us learn about the diverse communities who shaped this landscape throughout its long history.” Devlin said the ax was dated through knowledge of when such tools came into use, by comparing it to other tools from the period, and by dating the methods of its construction. It is believed to be the first such artifact found at Mount Vernon in recent years. The makers of the ax were probably people who migrated by boat up and down the Potomac River seasonally and may
not have lived in fixed villages, Devlin said. The ax would have been a key possession during their travels. “When you spend the effort to make tools like this ax, you would have probably carried it with you,” he said. “You wouldn’t just make something like this off the cuff … and used it once or twice and chucked it. … This is something people invested time in. It definitely isn’t something that was just sort of pitched by the side, just by happenstance.” The ax was probably used for cutting or carving wood, he said. It probably was not a weapon. The group of students who found the ax were helping to map out the dimensions of what is believed to be a cemetery for Mount Vernon’s enslaved African-Americans and their descendants. They have come to Mount Vernon to do archaeology work for six years. Joe Downer, Mount Vernon’s archaeological field research manager, said he was taken aback when he first saw the group’s find. “I looked at it, and I held it for a minute, and I was like, ‘Well, that might be one of the coolest things we found out here.’ ” MICHAEL E. The VirginianPilot reported Wednesday that Foster Shane Gaines is accused of using a contraband cellphone to recruit underage prostitutes and advertise their services online. Court documents also allege that the 41-year-old arranged for more than 10 pounds of methamphetamine to be shipped to Virginia’s Hampton Roads region. VIRGINIA In a Northern Virginia swing district that is one of the most watched in this midterm election, one-quarter of the electorate can’t really say what they think of state Sen. Jennifer Wexton. But in most polls, the Democrat is comfortably ahead of Rep. Barbara Comstock, the two-term Republican who is ubiquitous. That phenomenon says plenty about this particular moment in this particular suburban district across the river from Washington, heavy with college-educated, affluent voters and growing immigrant communities. Voters in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District say they want to vote for a Democrat — any Democrat — as a check on President Trump. Johannah MacBain, a 38-yearold public school teacher, couldn’t remember if she had voted for Comstock in 2016, but she said Trump’s election has propelled her to vote for Wexton. Asked why, she said, “If I’m going to be really honest here, [it’s] that she’s not Barbara Comstock.” But if anyone can withstand a blue wave, it’s Comstock, her supporters say. She has stayed closely connected to community groups throughout her sprawling district and is a tenacious campaigner. Hillary Clinton swept her district in 2016 by 10 points. But Comstock survived — and outperformed Trump by 16. “She is going to win again. Because she’s Barbara Comstock. She has her own brand. She’s tough,” said John Fredericks, a conservative radio host and Trump loyalist. Wexton has run a cautious campaign, trying to avoid any

fumbles that could jeopardize Democrats’ chances to flip a district that has been in Republican hands for nearly 40 years. A lack of a bold message may be why one out of every four voters said they didn’t have an opinion of her as recently as early October. “She’s competent, she’s experienced, she’s not going to cause any unforced errors,” said former Democratic congressman Jim Moran, who recently hosted a fundraiser for her. Wexton’s campaign boils down to this: Comstock has voted with Trump 98 percent of the time. Republicans want to destroy your health care. Only Democrats can enact gun control. Her ads call the congresswoman “Barbara Trumpstock.” Comstock says she is running as an independent who breaks with Trump when necessary, cares about federal employees and worked to combat sexual harassment. that people should be embracing not resisting,” she said on Fredericks’ radio show. The sprawling district contains the affluent, neatly manicured communities of McLean and Ashburn and the liberal enclaves in parts of Loudoun County as well as red, rural stretches of the Shenandoah Valley. John Fabris, a 69-year-old retiree from Ashburn, considers himself a fiscal conservative and voted for Romney in 2012, but Trump’s election made him rethink his 2014 and 2016 votes for Comstock. “How he gets away with the things he gets away with is beyond me,” he said, before calling voters on behalf of Wexton. “He’s an embarrassment.” “I don’t know that I’m antiComstock, but she supports him,” he said, referring to Trump. “That in and of itself is enough for me to go the other way.” JENNA PORTNOY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Police investigating the mysterious deaths of two Saudi Arabian sisters whose bound bodies washed up on New York City’s waterfront on Oct. 24 say it appears they were alive when they went into the water. COLLEGE PARK, MD. The University of Maryland president’s announcement Wednesday evening that the school had cut ties Loh with its football coach not only removed a divisive figure from the school, but led to a growing call for Wallace Loh to rescind his own announced intention to retire. “President Wallace Loh took the appropriate action yesterday and did what the Board of Regents did not do, Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, the House minority whip, said in a statement Thursday. “I urge Dr. Loh to reconsider his announced retirement and continue in his role as President of University of Maryland, College Park, a role which has resulted in significant progress for the University. Loh’s decision to part ways with football coach DJ Durkin directly defies the recommendation made by the University System of Maryland’s Board of Regents on Tuesday afternoon. The board’s chairman had announced that after a commission investigated a player’s death, the culture of the football program and the athletic department, the football coach would return to the sideline.

Too high a price to pay? METRO Prompted in part by a disturbing recent study finding that nearly everyone being cited for fare evasion by Metro is AfricanAmerican, D.C. City Council members are considering reducing the penalty for those who try to ride without paying. Council members backing the bill, such as Charles Allen, DWard 8, are also concerned that treating fare evasion as a criminal offense is overly harsh. In theory, offenders could be left with criminal records, making it difficult to find a job or a get a place to live — over a $2-something fare, he said. “I want the consequences of fare evasion to match the action itself,” Allen said recently. But Metro worries that weakening the penalties for fare evasion will just lead to more people trying to ride for free. “It is very safe to assume, that without fear of any meaningful penalty, [fare evasion] would increase significantly,” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said via email. Under the bill, fare evasion would no longer be treated as a criminal offense, but a civil infraction punishable by a fine, like littering. Instead of facing up to 10 days in jail, a fine of up to $300 and a potential criminal record, as is the case now, fare evaders would face a maximum $50 fine. The bill passed the council’s Judiciary and Public Safety committee unanimously on Oct. 4, and is expected to come to a full council vote by the end of the year. One question, though, is whether fare evaders would skip out on paying the fine as well as the fare. Without the threat of jail,
Jumping turnstiles to enter Metro could result in a $300 fine and 10 days in jail. Is that too harsh?
75 percent of fines for civil infractions go into default, Deputy Mayor Kevin Donahue wrote in testimony to the council last year, raising concerns about the bill. The city’s treasury department does try to collect, said spokesman David Umansky. The city will not renew the driver’s licenses of people who owe fines, even if it’s for offenses that do not involve driving, like littering. Unpaid fines can be taken out of any city tax refunds. And the city can also garnish wages. Allen acknowledged Donahue’s concerns. “There may be issues to work through with citations and how it’s implemented,” he said. “But it’s not a reason to keep criminalizing fare evasion.” Heightening concerns further
Stopping gate jumpers There are other things Metro could do to reduce fare evasion — including some that it is already doing. For example, the swinging emergency gates next to the fare gates until recently did not secure. So in addition to doubling up to get through the fare gates, or climbing over them, fare evaders could just go through the swinging gate. In June 2017, Metro tested securing the swinging gates at Gallery Place and Fort Totten stations. After finding that it reduced the number of people going through them, Metro has secured the gates at 44 other stations at a cost of $65,000 per station. Metro will be securing the gates at 37 other stations over the next year. K.M.
MICHAEL ROBINSON CHAVEZ (THE WASHINGTON POST)
D.C. council eyes milder penalty for fare evasion, citing possible racial bias
is that Metro has been cracking down on fare evaders. Citations and arrests for not paying fares have risen almost fivefold from 3,662 in 2014 to 15,348 last year. Through September of this year, Metro reports 9,840 enforcement actions for fare evasion. That’s down from the 11,974 at the same point last year, but still on pace to quadruple the number from 2014. Even more concerning is a September report by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, based on data obtained from Metro through public disclosure requests. It found that transit police stopped 30,000 people for fare evasion between January 2016 and Feb. 5, 2018. Ninety-one percent of the people given citations were African-American. Additionally, a disproportionate percentage of citations were issued in stations heavily used by young people of color, the report said. Though boardings at Gallery Place account for only 3.5 percent of all weekday boardings, according to Metro figures, the report said 15 percent of citations were given out at the station. The Anacostia station accounts for only 1 percent of all weekday boardings, but 14 percent of fare evasion citations. In an interview last week, Metro transit police chief Ron Pavlik denied police are emphasizing catching fare evaders at stations used by large numbers of minorities. He also said police are not targeting minorities. Unlike traffic stops, where there have been reports of police targeting drivers of color, he said, transit police can only stop people they actually see not paying a fare. Other ideas for enforcement, like randomly asking riders for proof they paid, have even more potential for racial targeting, he said. KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

Hate booming online Racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric is rampant, and efforts to quash it face numerous challenges
Sources: Saudi called Khashoggi dangerous in call
GENE J. PUSKAR (AP)
TECHNOLOGY A website popular with racists that was used by the man charged in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre was shut down within hours of the slaughter, but it hardly mattered: AntiSemites and racists who use such sites just moved to other online forums. On Wednesday, four days after 11 people were killed in the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history, anonymous posters on another website popular with white supremacists, Stormfront, claimed the bloodshed at Tree of Life synagogue was an elaborate hoax. The site’s operator, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, said traffic has increased about 45 percent since the shooting. The anti-Semitic rhetoric was just as bad on a similar site, The Daily Stormer, where a headline said: “Just go, Jews. You’re not welcome.” Trying to stop the online vitriol that critics say fuels realworld bloodshed is a constant battle for groups that monitor hate, and victories are hard to come by. Shut down one platform like Gab, where the shooting suspect posted a message shortly before the attack, and another one remains or a new one opens. The problem dates back to the dawn of the internet, when users connected their computers to each other by dialing telephone numbers. A report issued by the New York-based Anti-Defamation League in 1985 found there were two online “networks of hate” in the United States, both run by neo-Nazis who spread anti-Semitic, racist propaganda. Today, the vastness of the

online world is a big part of the problem, said Oren Segal, director of the ADL’s Center for Extremism. “It’s really difficult to put an actual number on it, but I would say this: There are thousands of hate sites and there are dozens and dozens of platforms in which hate exists,” Segal said. A new study by the VOX-Pol Network of Excellence, composed of academic researchers who study online extremism, said the exact number of far-right adherents on just one platform, Twitter, is impossible to determine. But at least 100,000 people and automated accounts are aligned with radicals commonly referred to as the “alt-right,” the study found, and the true number is probably more than twice that. An ADL report released a day before the shooting said extremists had increased anti-Semitic harassment against Jewish journalists, political candidates and

were involved. Purging hateful content from the internet is a challenge. The Constitution’s guarantee of free speech provides a roadblock to banning hate speech in the United States, according to the First Amendment Center. “Political speech receives the greatest protection under the First Amendment, and discrimination against viewpoints runs counter to free-speech principles. Much hate speech qualifies as political, even if misguided,” said an essay by center scholar David L. Hudson Jr. and Mahad Ghani, a fellow with the center. Some advocate other tactics for curbing hate. One proposal would use a report card to grade how sites are quelling hate speech. Segal said: “The commitment to eradicating hate from platforms is not always matched by the ability to do so because there is just so much content out there.” JAY REEVES (AP)
NATIONAL SECURITY Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman described slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi as a dangerous Islamist days after his disappearance in a phone call with President Trump’s son-inlaw Jared Kushner and national security adviser John Bolton, according to people familiar with the discussion. In the call, which occurred before the kingdom publicly acknowledged killing Khashoggi, the crown prince urged Kushner and Bolton to preserve the U.S.-Saudi alliance and said the journalist was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a group long opposed by Bolton and other senior Trump officials. The attempt to criticize Khashoggi in private stands in contrast to the Saudi government’s later statements decrying the journalist’s death as a “terrible tragedy.” In a statement released to The Washington Post, Khashoggi’s family called the characterization of the columnist as a dangerous Islamist inaccurate. “Jamal Khashoggi was not a dangerous person in any way possible. To claim otherwise would be ridiculous,” the family said. A person familiar with the discussion said Bolton did not signal he endorsed the crown prince’s characterization. A Saudi official on Wednesday denied the crown prince made the allegations. JOHN HUDSON, SOUAD MEKHENNET AND CAROL D. LEONNIG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

U.S. and Turkish troops on Thursday began jointly patrolling areas around the northern Syrian town of Manbij, part of a road map for easing tensions between the two NATO allies, Turkey’s defense minister announced. Ankara and Washington agreed on a road map in June amid Turkish demands for the withdrawal of the U.S.-backed Kurdish militia that freed Manbij from the Islamic State group in 2016. for Yemen truce U.S. proposal to cease hostilities is welcomed by rebels as ‘positive’
YEMEN New U.S. calls for a cease-fire in Yemen have raised the prospect of ending a disastrous civil war that has caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, but previous rounds of talks have failed and thus far neither side shows any sign of backing down. Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for a “cessation of hostilitiesâ€? and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the truce should happen within 30 days and lead to U.N.led talks. Their remarks signify a shift in the position of the U.S., which has backed the Saudi-led coalition in its 3½-year war with Houthi rebels aligned with Iran. But the Saudi-led coalition is unlikely to accept the current battle lines for long, since they leave the Houthis in control of much of the country, including the capital, Sanaa, and the major port city of Hodeida. The two U.S. allies leading the coalition — Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — have yet to comment on the proposal. The rebels on Thursday said the calls for a truce were “positive,â€?

while urging a halt to the Saudi-led air campaign, which has caused the bulk of civilian casualties. The coalition has waged war on the Houthis since March 2015 in an effort to restore Yemen’s internationally recognized government, whose authority has been largely confined to the southern city of Aden since the rebels seized Sanaa and much of northern Yemen in 2014. The war, which has killed an estimated 10,000 people, is widely seen as a proxy battle pitting Saudi Arabia and the UAE against Iran. U.N. envoys have hosted several rounds of peace talks with no success. The Saudi-backed government has demanded the Houthis withdraw from Sanaa and other areas, which the rebels have refused to do. Trump to restrict asylum Plan to block migrants from entering U.S. likely to face legal backlash
Critics hammer Trump video as fearmongering
SPENCER PLATT (GETTY IMAGES)
IMMIGRATION President Trump said Thursday that he intends to take executive action next week to end the “abuse” of the U.S. asylum system, a plan that could include “massive tent cities” at the southern border aimed at holding migrants indefinitely and making it more difficult for them to remain in the country. But Trump offered few other details during remarks at the White House, where he reiterated unsubstantiated claims he has made in recent weeks that a caravan of migrants from Central America, traveling north through Mexico by foot, represents a national security threat. He painted the group, which includes many families with children, as dangerous and akin to an “invasion.” The president’s remarks came just days before Tuesday’s midterm elections, the latest bid by Trump to make immigration the top campaign issue. The president offered no legal rationale for his plan, and he brushed off questions about the legality of some of the methods he suggested could be employed, such as detaining families indefinitely or refusing migrants an immigration court hearing. Such moves would likely trigger legal challenges from civil rights groups. In a sign that the administration

is moving to carry out Trump’s orders, the Department of Homeland Security has asked the Pentagon to provide up to 8,000 family detention beds at two sites, an official said Thursday. The president and his allies have expressed confidence that Trump’s hard-line immigration message will motivate his conservative base as Republicans try to maintain control of Congress. Democrats have accused the president of fanning public fears over a group of migrant families that has dwindled and remains 800 miles from the United States. Trump’s promise of an executive order comes after he authorized the deployment of more than 7,000 troops to assist in security operations at the border, the
largest peacetime deployment of active-duty troops to the border in nearly a century. Asked if the military would use lethal force, Trump suggested that the troops would be compelled to respond to any violent confrontations. “I hope there won’t be that,” he said. “Anybody throwing stones, rocks . . . we will consider that a firearm.” Trump administration attorneys have struggled in recent weeks to make the president’s demands comport with U.S. laws. Under the Refugee Act of 1980, migrants who present themselves at U.S. ports of entry or reach American soil and state a fear of persecution in their home country are entitled to a “credible fear” screening. That review is
typically done by a U.S. asylum officer to determine whether the applicant should be referred to an immigration judge. If approved, applicants are released in the U.S. while waiting for a hearing. Analysts also cast doubt on the legality of draft plans that would issue blanket denials of asylum to large groups of immigrants. “He can’t by executive fiat repeal an act of Congress or a constitutional amendment,” said Deborah Anker, an immigration expert at Harvard Law School. He has to ask for new legislation.” Trump said the migrants are not “legitimate” asylum seekers, arguing the law should not accommodate people fleeing poverty. His words are clear: He’s killed cops and he’s “gonna kill more cops soon.” The man in the video, Luis Bracamontes, was twice deported and was convicted this year of murdering two law enforcement officers. His image is the centerpiece of a video tweeted out by President Trump ahead of the midterm elections. The video was immediately denounced by some Democrats and Republicans as racist. The video, which Trump tweeted late Wednesday, alleges without evidence that Democrats were responsible for allowing Bracamontes into the U.S. The ad was reminiscent of the infamous “Willie Horton” ad used against Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis in 1988. Horton, who was black, raped a woman while out of prison on a furlough. The White House and the Trump campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment as to who made or paid for the video or if any tax dollars were used. Al Cardenas, former head of the American Conservative Union, tweeted at Trump: “You are a despicable divider; the worse social poison to afflict our country in decades. nation+world Thousands protest the tech giant’s handling of misconduct allegations BUSINESS Carrying signs that included a mocking use of the company’s original “Don’t be evil” motto, thousands of Google employees around the world briefly walked off the job Thursday to protest what they said was the tech giant’s mishandling of sexual misconduct allegations against executives. Highly paid engineers and other workers staged walkouts of about an hour, reflecting rising #MeToo-era frustration among women over misconduct in heavily male Silicon Valley.
“Time is up on sexual harassment!” organizer Vicki Tardif Holland shouted at a gathering of about 300 people in Cambridge, Mass. “Time is up on systemic racism. Time is up on abuses of power. Enough is enough!” About 1,000 Google workers in San Francisco swarmed into a plaza in front of the historic Ferry Building, chanting, “Women’s rights are workers’ rights!” The protests unfolded a week after The New York Times detailed allegations of sexual misconduct about the creator of Google’s Android software, Andy Rubin. The newspaper said Rubin received a $90 million severance package in 2014 after Google concluded the accusations were credible. Rubin has denied the

allegations. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company had fired 48 employees, including 13 senior
managers, for sexual harassment in recent years without giving any of them severance packages. In an unsigned statement, the Google protesters called for an end to forced arbitration in harassment and discrimination cases, a practice that requires employees to give up their right to sue and often includes confidentiality agreements. They also demanded more aggressive steps for gender pay equity and more inclusive hiring practices to reduce the high concentration of white and Asian men in the industry’s programming jobs. In a statement, Pichai said the company is reviewing all the “constructive ideas” from employees to improve policies and practices. MICHAEL LIEDTKE (AP)

NATIONAL SECURITY The Justice Department on Thursday unveiled a broad new initiative to combat what it says is mounting criminal economic activity by China, announcing the plan as U.S. officials charged three Chinese individuals and a Chinese company with tradesecret theft. Thursday’s actions follow a series of moves meant to put Beijing on notice. The Trump administration has prioritized countering threats to U.S. national and economic security as China seeks to supplant the United States as the world’s dominant economic power. The administration has imposed tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods, and since September federal prosecutors have brought charges in three intellectual property theft cases allegedly involving Chinese spies and hackers. “Chinese economic espionage against the United States has been increasing — and it has been increasing rapidly,” said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “Enough is enough. We’re not going to take it anymore.” Under the initiative, Sessions said, the department will aggressively pursue trade-secret theft cases, and develop a strategy to identify researchers and defense industry employees who’ve been “co-opted” by Chinese agents to transfer technology to China, Sessions said. THREE POINTERS
Defensive obstacles
RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
The driving force behind the glory days of the Redskins wasn’t great quarterbacks, the Fun Bunch receivers or a wild man of a running back nicknamed Riggo. Oh, they were important pieces, but it was the linemen who were the biggest reason for their success. The Redskins have finally gone back to their oldschool formula and once again lead the NFC East. After Dan Snyder bought the team in 1999, the lines were neglected for a decade because the owner liked to draft marquee skill-position players. Finally, Washington chose left tackle Trent Williams fourth overall in 2010 and guard Brandon Scherff fifth overall in 2015, and both became Pro Bowlers. Along with 2014 third-round right tackle Morgan Moses, they help form the team’s best offensive line since the Hogs led the Redskins to three Super Bowl title seasons from 1982 to 1991. Now Washington is being
6
rewarded for spending its last two first-rounders on defensive end Jonathan Allen and defensive tackle Daron Payne. The “Alabama Wall” and defensive end Matt Ioannidis have played like the famed 1980s trio of Dexter Manley, Charles Mann and Dave Butz. Throw in a dominant running back in Adrian Peterson — who reminds fans of John Riggins in his second act as a 30-something back — and it feels a little like the good old days. It’s no coincidence that Washington is 5-2 after investing in linemen and lucking out by signing Peterson in August after second-round rookie Derrius Guice suffered a season-ending injury. Guice looked special, and give the Redskins credit for taking a chance on Peterson this late in his career. This is how winning is done — by pounding the rock and succeeding in the trenches. Even pass-first coach Jay Gruden is suddenly shifting his offense as his new quarterback Alex Smith struggles.

Success on lines: Redskins thrive with old formula
Jonathan Allen
Washington has 210 running plays versus 228 passes, the narrowest margin of Gruden’s five-year tenure. The defensive renaissance is particularly impressive. The Redskins have shut down three of the NFL’s top running backs during their three-game winning streak, holding each to fewer than 40 yards on the ground. Dallas’ Ezekiel Elliott, second in the NFL in rushing, had 33 yards on 15 carries; the Giants’ Saquon Barkley had 38 yards on 13 carries; and Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey had 20 yards on eight carries. Ioannidis is even playing Mann’s old role of racking up sacks while opponents focus
on supposedly more dangerous pass-rushers. Teams worried more about Manley — and deservedly so given he’s the Redskins’ career sack leader with 91 (plus six more as a rookie before the NFL started keeping records). But the often overlooked Mann is second with 82. Ioannidis leads the 2018 Redskins with 5½ sacks. Maybe Washington will get forced or tempted into a passing shootout Sunday against Atlanta. But as long as their lines dominate this season, so will the Redskins.
3 Shift in mindset The Redskins’ focus the past few weeks has been to shut down star running backs. But with the third fewest carries in the NFL, the Falcons don’t rely on their ground game.
2 Red zone oddity Julio Jones is second in the league in receiving (812 yards) but has zero TDs. In the red zone, the Redskins need to watch Calvin Ridley (6 TDs) and Mohamed Sanu (3 TDs).
1 Pressure Ryan Matt Ryan has been sacked 16 times in four losses and just four times in three wins. Like most quarterbacks, it’s paramount to make sure he’s uncomfortable in the pocket.

REDSKINS’ BALL SECURITY
The number of giveaways this season for the Redskins (two interceptions, four fumbles). The only team with fewer turnovers is the Falcons, whom Washington faces Sunday (1 p.m., Fox). The Redskins are tied for third in the league with a plus-7 turnover margin, with safety D.J. Swearinger recording an NFL-high four interceptions. Through eight games, Swearinger — who also has two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, a sack and 32 tackles — has the highest grade of any safety in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, recording a 90.9 out of to 100 scale. WIZARDS VS. THUNDER | 8 P.M. FRIDAY, ESPN/NBCSW
NFL Week 9 preview
Howard set to make Wizards debut Friday Without starting center, Washington struggled to rebound and defend
The NFL’s leading rusher (800 yards) has clearly been the fantasy football MVP, racking up at least 20 fantasy points in each game. But he faces his toughest test Sunday against the Saints’ top-ranked run defense.
Dwight Howard has missed the first seven games of the Wizards’ season, in which the team went 1-6.

Bills QB Nathan Peterman Vs. Bears, 1 p.m. Sunday

and he understands that it’s a long season as well as anybody on our team. The Wizards (1-6) have longed for a starting-caliber center through their rough start to the season. Specifically, they could have used a former three-time Defensive Player of the Year, five-time rebounding leader and master at the screen and roll. As the team lost four of five games on the recent Western Conference road trip, Howard remained in Washington to get into game shape. Watching televised games from afar, Howard noticed the team’s deficiencies. “It’s a collective effort. I just think we all have to be on the same page on defense,” Howard said. “You got to communicate
and we got to get the 50-50 plays. I think on the road, we didn’t do a good job in getting those balls that we should’ve gotten. Those rebounds that as a team we need. … We started out a little slow but I expect us to pick it up.” Though Howard has not played in a game since last April, his rebounding could impact the Wizards immediately. Through seven games, Washington has allowed the second-highest average in opponent offensive rebounding (13.9 per game) and that number could balloon with Thunder center Steven Adams on the court. Entering Thursday’s matchup in Charlotte, Adams ranked second in the NBA in offensive rebounding (5.0 per game). CANDACE BUCKNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

WIZARDS Hip-hop beats blasted Thursday afternoon throughout the MedStar Wizards Performance Center, the selection of the last player on the practice court. Tupac was Dwight Howard’s preference, as the legendary rapper provided the musical accompaniment to the most interesting development of the Wizards’ young season. “Should be,” Howard said, playing coy when asked about making his season debut Friday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder. “I’ve been talking to Coach [Scott Brooks] about it. He say he doesn’t know if he’s going to play me yet.” Howard, who has spent over a month rehabilitating from a sore buttock, stopped the bit and smiled broadly. “Nah, I’m just kidding. Yeah!” With this confirmation, the Dwight Howard era in Washington can officially begin. “Definitely his toughness, his experience,” Brooks said about Howard helps the team. “He’s a very good player. He’s just another guy that can lead. He’s been through a lot of seasons, a lot of ups and downs,

MARYLAND Several Maryland football players voiced strong support Wednesday night for the university’s decision to reverse course and part ways with coach DJ Durkin. “Don’t let anyone tell you your voice doesn’t matter!” offensive lineman Ellis McKennie tweeted. “Pressure busts pipes doesn’t it?” linebacker Tre Watson posted on Twitter. Receiver Michael Cornwell quoted the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in a tweet: “True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it’s the presence of justice.” One day after the school reinstated Durkin from administrative leave, it parted ways with him amid backlash from lawmakers, students and some members of the team. Durkin, the Terrapins’ coach since 2016, had been under scrutiny since 19-year-old offensive lineman Jordan McNair died in June as a result of heatstroke suffered at a team workout. On Wednesday evening, offensive lineman Johnny Jordan, who was one of McNair’s roommates, told reporters that he thought Durkin’s firing was the “right decision” for the program. Linebacker Bruce Miller posted that “Justice for our brother was served.” Some other players tweeted messages of team unity. Team members were informed of the decision after Wednesday’s

Wide receiver DJ Turner criticized the timing of the decisions in a tweet saying how that “makes it hard for me to believe that the best interest of the team was in mind at all throughout this whole process.” Durkin’s reinstatement came just before the players began practice Tuesday. “It’s funny how we have all this ‘support’ now, but I haven’t seen the stadium full since I got to the University of Maryland!” Turner wrote in another tweet. “Please keep all the fake love, we’re good! VIRGINIA The number jumped off the stat sheet: 484 rushing yards. That’s what Pittsburgh (4-4, 3-1 ACC) amassed in a wild 54-45 win over Duke a week ago, and what No. 25 Virginia (6-2, 4-1) will be trying to prevent when the Cavaliers host the Panthers on Friday night (7:30, ESPN2). The Cavaliers have allowed just 113 rushing yards per game this season and have held each of their past two opponents, Duke and North Carolina, to fewer than 70 yards. “We’re just trying to keep teams under 3.5 yards per rush, and I think we’ve been really dominant with the run game recently and we’re going to keep building off of it,” safety Joey Blount, above, said. The Panthers have won the past three meetings in the series, but none of those games had the stakes that are up for grabs this time. Virginia sits atop the ACC’s Coastal Division standings, but is tied with Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech (3-1) in the loss column with games to play against both. Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi knows running the ball will be more challenging this week. “They’re a top 20 defense,” he said. “Our offense will have to be consistent with what they did last week, try to do it again, go backto-back, back-to-back playing really good. Our defense has to make a step up, try to stop an explosive offense and a confident offense.” HANK KURZ JR. (AP)

‘Viper Club’
We’re still trying to figure out if this is Rami Malek or just an actual stock photo of Freddie Mercury.
20TH CENTURY FOX
R, 109 min.
An odd kind of magic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a laughably formulaic biopic. It’s also wildly entertaining. FILM REVIEW We can stipulate a few things about “Bohemian Rhapsody.” We can stipulate that, in many ways, it’s not a very good movie. As a trite, often laughably cliched biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, an enterprise that should have been as daring and flamboyantly theatrical as its subject winds up being Wikified, distortingly compressed and unforgivably conventional. And yet. We can also stipulate that, despite the myriad shortcomings of its parts, the sum of “Bohemian Rhapsody” winds up being giddily entertaining, first as an exercise in so-bad-it’s-funny kitsch, and ultimately as something far more meaningful and thrilling.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” is that cinematic unicorn: the bad movie that works, even when it shouldn’t. As a tour through Mercury’s rise and tragic end (he died from AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991), “Bohemian Rhapsody” hits all the expected notes: We meet young Freddie (Rami Malek) when he’s making pilgrimages to a local club to hear his favorite band, Smile. When that group’s lead singer quits, Freddie holds an impromptu audition in the parking lot, wowing guitarist Brian May (Gwilym Lee) and drummer Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy). Renamed Queen, the band becomes hugely popular throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Meanwhile, Freddie proposes to the love of his life, Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton),
‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (R, 134 min.) DIRECTOR: Bryan Singer STARS: Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Ben Hardy, Joseph Mazzello IN A NUTSHELL: The rise of Freddie Mercury and Queen is tracked, culminating in the band’s iconic 1985 performance at Live Aid.
even though deep down, they both know he’s gay. As Freddie’s fame grows, so do his conflicts. These bullet points are dramatized with a metronomic sense of duty in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was directed by Bryan Singer until he was fired from the production, at which point
Dexter Fletcher stepped in. If anyone doubted that cinema is an actor’s medium, “Bohemian Rhapsody” arrives as proof: Malek delivers a thoroughly inhabited performance, which winds up transcending the regrettably thin material. “Bohemian Rhapsody” ends with one of the most memorable finales in recent memory, when the filmmakers restage Queen’s appearance at Live Aid in 1985. It’s a bravura passage, in which Malek’s physical presence fuses seamlessly with Freddie’s slightly ragged voice. As he gains strength, so does the scene and, by extension, the movie, which take on weight and emotion and an inescapable, infectious joy. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Gladiator’ dragged into the sequel arena
Ridley Scott is moving forward with a sequel to his hit film “Gladiator,” Deadline reported Thursday. After Russell Crowe’s Maximus died in the original, the sequel reportedly will focus on Lucius, the nephew of the villainous emperor played by Joaquin Phoenix in the 2000 film. Scott plans to direct the sequel, with a script penned by Peter Craig, who co-wrote the final two “Hunger Games” movies. (EXPRESS)
Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson confirmed for “Hitman’s Bodyguard” sequel
Showtime orders “Penny Dreadful” sequel series
In “Viper Club,” Susan Sarandon plays a desperate mother whose journalist son (Julian Morris) has been captured by Syrian terrorists. The film has all the right ingredients, but good intentions only go so far, especially when they mask tawdry melodrama. Even the best movies push emotional buttons, but his one is so manipulative you can hear the gears grinding — until they lock up. ALAN ZILBERMAN (TWP)
‘On Her Shoulders’ Unrated, 95 min.
The story of Nadia Murad — who escaped captivity by the Islamic State, going on to receive the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize — has been well publicized. The powerful documentary “On Her Shoulders” doesn’t rehash her suffering. Instead, director Alexandria Bombach chronicles Murad’s more recent life, revealing her to be a compelling subject. Mixed company: Kindness and fury tangle in ‘Suspiria’ The notes I jotted down while watching “Suspiria” are one sentence long. That sentence is simply, “What the actual f---?” I mean it as a compliment. “Suspiria” shares a title and not much else with its 1977 predecessor (director Luca Guadagnino says this is an “homage” to Dario Argento’s original, rather than a remake). Dancer Susie (Dakota Johnson) joins the Markos Dance Academy in 1977. The Berlin-based modern dance company is supervised by Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton, so you know stuff is going to get weird). A dancer accuses Blanc and the other women in charge of the company of being witches and soon after is trapped in a
mirrored room and manipulated by an unseen force into a literally bone-crunching dance. Some of the company members have preternaturally powerful abilities, some have painfully vivid nightmares, and their house is decorated in a style that can only be called Early Demonic Creepy. The entire movie is centered around women’s power: how we get it, what we do with it and the consequences that result. Dance companies have always been competitive — “Center Stage” taught us that, if nothing else — but “Suspiria” takes it to a new, bloodily violent, supernatural level. The “what the f---?”-ness is integral to the message of the movie. Things have to not make sense, because the movie takes place in a world
Kobe Bryant’s Granity Studios to release series of young adult books
we cannot imagine: one where a group of women has access to unrestricted power. And not only the supernatural type, but the kind that comes from occupying a women-only space. There are no men in the company, and the only significant male character is played by a woman in heavy disguise. It’s not uncommon for a movie about women’s power to take place in some sort of supernatural space. That makes sense — a movie in which the women in charge are witches or demons or devils removes us from the actual world, where our power is curtailed. Placing female characters in a situation where the limits of female power don’t exist allows for a deeper examination of what it would be like if we were in charge in the real world. And
‘Suspiria’ (R, 152 min.) DIRECTOR: Luca Guadagnino STARS: Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Chloe Grace Moretz IN A NUTSHELL: The artistic director of a dance company in Berlin and a young American new to the troupe get caught up in a bloody nightmare.
things would be a lot easier for us, starting with the fact that we could eat bananas in public without feeling weird and we wouldn’t think we have to sneak our tampon through the office on the way to the bathroom to change it (and a lot fewer men would think “ewww” when they hear the word “tampon”). People too often assume that a world with more women in power would automatically be a better, more peaceful one. Women’s strength, we’re told, comes from kindness and nurturing, and “Suspiria” shows that. Within the walls of the dance academy, women are cared for and femininity in its many forms is celebrated. But “Suspiria” is also about how women’s power can (and often does) come from blood and rage and violence — three things women know plenty about. Feminine power in “Suspiria” is neither inherently cuddly and kind, nor a wrath-filled bringer of doom; it’s somehow both and neither at the same time. It’s always walking a line between nurture and anger — in short, it’s just like a woman. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby
Deadline: Ewan McGregor cast as villain in “Birds of Prey”
FILM REVIEW In its broadest parameters, Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” hews only loosely to its source materials: German writer E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 fantasy story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” and the two-act ballet that is based on it. Otherwise, the film — a mix of live action and CGI — is, for better and for worse, pure Disney. What that means is a visual spectacle that is imaginative, dazzling and — more often than not — charming. And the story is harnessed to a screenplay that pads out the slender fable at its heart with an at times needlessly busy narrative. Centered on a girl named Clara (Mackenzie Foy), the film opens at a Christmas Eve party. When Clara wanders off in search of her present from the toymaker Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman), she ends up in an alternate universe and meets a nutcracker who has turned into a soldier (Jayden FoworaKnight). He introduces Clara to four regents (Keira Knightley, Richard E. Grant, Eugenio Derbez and Helen Mirren) who find themselves in conflict. Mirren’s character is presented as the villain, but all is not as it seems. “Nutcracker’s” plot may not always hum with the clockwork precision of one of Drosselmeyer’s mechanical toys, but like a music box, it nevertheless plays a sweet tune. SUMMARY: In this romantic comedy with a title that REALLY needs a question mark, Rebel Wilson plays Natalie, a woman who hates romantic comedies. So of course it’s comedic when she hits her head and wakes up in one, and it’s romantic when she meets Blake (Liam Hemsworth). Oh, the irony!
SUMMARY: Will Smith voices superspy Lance Sterling, who spends most of the trailer doing superspy things in a superspy way. Then he gets turned into a bird. No, seriously. We are not making this up. He’s all karate-chopping people and evading explosions and doing it all in a tuxedo and then POW! HE’S A BIRD! Whatever you say, movie. K.P.K.

“That itself is a lie.” @SCOTTMONTY, tweeting after President Trump said, “When I can, I tell the truth” during an interview with ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl. When Karl reminded the president that he had said during the 2016 campaign that he would “never lie to” the American people, and asked him if he believed he’d “always” been truthful, Trump responded with, “Well, I try.” Twitter users and critics of the president weren’t convinced by his answer.
“I hope the Satanic Temple are at least thoughtful enough to include spoiler alerts within their lawsuit.” @CKGDREW, joking about the news that The Satanic Temple is accusing Netflix of copyright infringement related to TST’s statue of Baphomet, the goat deity with roots in paganism and the Knights Templar. A similar statue appears in Netflix’s show “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” Lucien Greaves, founder of TST, said legal action would be taken, even though depictions of Baphomet predate The Satanic Temple.
“The gay couple who had been together for 50+ years. But they were still afraid to hold hands in public for fear that they would be physically attacked.” @ASHARON004, tweeting about some

“Justin Timberlake is still talking about Britney in 2018? Get a life, man.” @DANDELIONMARIAH, reacting to reports about Justin Timberlake’s new book, “Hindsight: & All the Things I Can’t See in Front of Me.” The singer discusses his 2002 breakup with Britney Spears, revealing that he wrote “Cry Me a River” — long rumored to be about Spears — in two hours. Spears fans weren’t happy that Timberlake mentioned her, given that they broke up 16 years ago.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Your involvement in a certain event or activity may not be as immersive as you had anticipated, but you can be more objective this way. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Distance must not be allowed to stand between you and a friend who is helping you pull off something of a “miracle.” Stay in touch.

can get ahead of the game today by spending a little more time early on laying the groundwork. All else springs forth from that.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
