He thought he was trying the only bottle of Macallan 1878 Scotch still in circulation when he bought a shot at a Swiss hotel. But experts later raised doubts about its authenticity. The manager of the Hotel Waldhaus am See in St. Moritz later flew to Asia to deliver Zhang’s refund. (EXPRESS)
A Tokyo marketing company is giving a nice perk to its employees who don’t smoke: an extra six days of vacation. Piala executive Hirotaka Matsushima said Thursday that the company began offering the extra vacation to its 120 staff members in September. “It’s pretty popular,” Matsushima said. He said the policy aims to compensate nonsmokers — about two-thirds of the staff — for the time their colleagues use for smoke breaks. (AP)

Great white ‘pings’ off Delmarva coast DELMARVA COAST A 12-foot great white shark has been tracked near the Delmarva coast. The shark, weighing 1,668 pounds, is named Miss Costa, after a sunglass company that supports Ocearch, a nonprofit that tracks and researches sharks. Miss Costa was tagged by the research group in September 2016 off the Nantucket, Mass., coast. On Wednesday, the Ocearch crew detected a “ping” from tracking equipment on her off the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. A “ping” happens when a shark’s dorsal fin breaks the water’s surface, which allows tracking and satellite equipment to get information about its location. Miss Costa is one of the first sharks to “ping” off the Delmarva coast since the summer, experts said.

Ocearch catches great white sharks, takes samples for research, and releases them. It shares its shark-tracking data online in real time. People interested in the sharks can check their data and where the sharks have been. Some of the sharks have “pinged” within a few miles of popular beaches in Maryland and Virginia. A few have their own Twitter accounts and get nicknames after Ocearch’s sponsors. For example, Miss Costa’s
Twitter bio, @MissCostaShark, reads: “Love fishing, ocean life, and to #KickPlastic!” Mary Lee is one of Ocearch’s most popular great white sharks. Sanctuary cities take center stage in Va.

VIRGINIA Days before Virginia’s tight gubernatorial election Tuesday, Democratic nominee Ralph Northam is still facing questions about his stance on “sanctuary cities” — localities that decline to enforce federal immigration laws. Never mind that Virginia has no sanctuary cities. Or that there is no evidence that they lead to increased crime or gang activity. Republicans have seized on the issue as a way of portraying Northam as soft on crime. And Northam is not alone. In tight elections from New York to New Mexico, Republicans are using sanctuary cities to attack Democrats as enabling Latino gang violence. Democrats, who have criticized the Trump administration for deporting undocumented immigrants with no criminal records, are struggling to explain their positions. In Virginia, Northam has repeatedly walked into a trap set by Republicans. In January, President Trump threatened to cut off federal funds to sanctuary cities. In February, the GOP-controlled state senate forced Northam, the lieutenant governor, to break a tie on a bill that would have banned sanctuary cities in Virginia. The Senate Majority Leader

Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie, left, has tried to portray his Democratic opponent Ralph Northam as soft on crime.
Thomas K. Norment, R-James City, initially voted against the ban — an odd move for the GOP leader to break from his party — but it set up a tie forcing Northam to go on record on a contentious issue. Ed Gillespie, who in June became the Republican nominee for governor, said that he would have approved the ban. That vote, as Democrats expected, became the focus of millions of dollars in attack ads accusing Northam of leaving Virginians vulnerable to MS-13 gang violence. In TV ads, Northam said that he has favored tougher laws against gangs; in debates, Northam called the February bill a “political trick.” But on Wednesday, he went further, telling Norfolk station
WAVY that he could sign a similar bill, but only if a Virginia city actually declared sanctuary status. “I’ve always been opposed to sanctuary cities,” Northam said. Republicans, who believe that the attacks were helping Gillespie close a polling gap, pounded on Northam for changing his position. So did some progressives, who accused the Democrat of flaking on a tough, moral issue. “ I w a nt to ele c t R a lph Northam, but parroting Gillespie’s hateful xenophobia is despicable,” said Ezra Levin, a co-founder of the grassroots Indivisible network of progressive groups, in a tweet. “Find your spine, Ralph.” DAVID WEIGEL AND LAURA VOZZELLA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The request for a hearing by the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit follows a decision last month by a three-judge panel that said the 40-foot-tall cross maintained with taxpayer funds “excessively entangles the government in religion” in violation of the First Amendment. “This is a case of exceptional importance that threatens memorials nationwide. Larry Hogan is also among the monument’s defenders and called the ruling “an affront to all veterans” that “should not be allowed to stand.” The issue for the Richmondbased court was whether the memorial, known as the Peace Cross, is a secular tribute to local men who died in World War I or an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion that must be removed from public property. It may take a while to get used to the loss of the home button TECHNOLOGY The iPhone X arriving in stores Friday isn’t just a new design. It’s a new relationship. Compared to your current phone, the 10thanniversary iPhone is missing a key element: the home button. The whole front is just screen. You have to learn new gestures to operate it. Instead of scanning a finger to unlock it, now you stop and look at it for a second like you’re taking a selfie. This phone recognizes you. Is the $1,000 iPhone X for you? It’s no slam dunk. The zaniest new features, like the face unlock, mostly function as billed. Its slimmed-down big screen feels easier to hold than previous iPhones and its battery lasts two blissful extra hours. But this year, Apple’s also selling the cheaper iPhone 8 and 7 with nearly as much horsepower and a design — complete with trusty home button — you already know. If you buy an X (pronounced “ten”), think of it as having a blind date with your most important gadget. Navigating it can be just as confusing as figuring out when to hold hands. Your thumb will often end up in the wrong place.

The iPhone X (pronounced “ten”) arrives in stores Friday and will carry a $1,000 price tag.
Aside from expected improvements in the camera and processor, the X moves the iPhone forward by removing parts that get in between you and the message you want to send. In Silicon Valley, they call these barriers the “chrome”: menus and buttons that are the interface between you and information. The X tries to make the iPhone the world’s smartest screen. Not only can it recognize you by face, but with a phalanx of sensors buried in the notch at the top of its screen, it can even know if you’re smiling. It hears you when you call out (to Siri), and tries to take you right to what you seek. It could be worthwhile; just be patient for a while with that new FaceID. GEOFFREY A. FOWLER

Is tax plan for middle class? ANALYSIS House Republicans have stressed that the tax plan they unveiled Thursday is tailored to benefit America’s middle class. Just how much it would remains uncertain based on the details that have been provided so far. What is clear is that many of the benefits for the middle class could dwindle over time, even while companies and wealthy individuals could enjoy lasting tax advantages. The plan, which would add $1.5 trillion to the nation’s debt over the next decade, promises tax savings next year of $1,182 for a typical household of four with gross income of $59,000, leaving their tax bill at $400. “We are focused on increasing paychecks in a major way,” said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, the Republican chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. But the proposal’s conflicting provisions and phase-outs of certain benefits suggest that taxes could rise for some middle-class earners over time. And for many, the income gains being touted by President Trump are unlikely to materialize. Trump has frequently said that this would be the biggest tax cut in U.S. history. But outside analyses show that that’s not the case. T he ta x pla n’s pr i ma r y

Wealthy appear to be primary beneficiaries of the GOP proposal
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan unveils the GOP’s tax overhaul Thursday.
Mortgage deductions Americans can now deduct interest payments made on their first $1 million worth of home loans. Under the new bill, for new mortgages, they would only be able to deduct interest payments made on their first $500,000 worth of home loans. This change could have a large impact on high-cost areas, such as San Francisco, New York and Washington, D.C. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
beneficiaries would be wealthier Americans, who would enjoy lower tax rates (despite the elimination of some breaks), a repeal of the so-called alternative minimum tax and the termination of
the estate tax. “With the details they’ve presented to us so far, it looks like the tax cut benefits the wealthy and major corporations,” said Martin Sullivan, chief economist at Tax Analysts and a former staff economist at the Treasury Department. “In fact, if you have a large family, given the facts that we have now … you would pay more in taxes.” Here’s why: A married couple making less than $90,000 would be taxed at a 12 percent rate, instead of the current 15 percent. The size of their standard deduction would nearly double to $24,000. But that same couple would lose persona l exemptions
— deductions that largely benefit families with multiple children. The child tax credit would rise to $1,600 from $1,000 — short of the $2,000 that Sullivan said would be needed to make many families whole. The tax plan would also repeal the deduction of substantial medical costs, including what families might spend on nursing home care. And it would cap the deduction of state and local taxes. It also would use a less generous measure of inflation, so that more middle-class taxpayers would creep into a higher bracket over several years. All told, nearly 70 percent of the tax cuts over 10 years would go to businesses, according to an analysis by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. The rest of the tax cuts appear to favor the wealthy. The promise made to the middle class by Trump and Republicans is that lower taxes would fuel faster economic growth, which, in turn, would cause incomes to rise. Kevin Hassett, chair of Trump’s White House Council of Economic Advisers, estimates that lowering the corporate tax rate to 20 percent from 35 percent would lead to an average income gain of $4,000 a year. But most mainstream economists have disputed that claim. Kent Smetters, faculty director of the Penn Wharton Budget Model, estimates that the income growth after a decade would range between $500 to $1,500. JOSH BOAK (AP)

nation+world President weighs in on NYC truck attack as investigation continues NEW YORK CITY President Trump’s tweets calling for the death penalty for the man charged in the New York truck rampage on Halloween could give defense attorneys grounds to argue that Trump has poisoned the minds of potential jurors. But some legal experts doubt that argument will slow the case. Trump said on Twitter that 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov “SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!” in the attack that left eight people dead. In another tweet, Trump said prosecutors “Should move fast.

Cohen said the yet-to-be-assigned judge will question prospective jurors to ensure they can be fair despite anything they might have heard or read. Aasia Bibi fought her parents bitterly over an arranged marriage to a relative. When her parents would not relent, according to Pakistani authorities, the 21-year-old woman tried to slip poison into her new husband’s milk and inadvertently killed 17 of his family members in the process. Bibi, who is charged with murder, appeared in court Tuesday in the northeastern city of Muzaffargarh, the Associated Press and ITV reported. Desperate to get out of the arrangement, Bibi went to her boyfriend, Shahid Lashari, who gave her a “poisonous substance,” local police chief Sohail Habib Tajak told the AP. Last week, Tajak said, Bibi mixed the poison in milk and gave it to her husband, but he refused to drink it. At some point after — and it’s not exactly clear how — Bibi’s mother-in-law used the tainted milk to make lassi, a yogurtbased drink popular in South Asia. When she served it to 27 members of her extended family, all lost consciousness and were hospitalized. Bibi and Lashari were arrested on murder charges shortly afterward. Seventeen of the family members have reportedly died over the past several days, including one young girl, and the other 10 are still in the hospital. DEREK HAWKINS

nation+world NATIONAL SECURITY The CIA’s release of documents seized during the 2011 raid that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden appears to bolster U.S. claims that Iran supported the extremist network leading up to the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks. U.S. intelligence officials and prosecutors have long said Iran formed loose ties to the terrorist organization from 1991 on, something noted in a 19-page alQaeda report in Arabic that was included in the release of about 47,000 documents by the CIA. For its part, Iran has long
denied any involvement with al-Qaeda. However, the report included in the CIA document dump shows how bin Laden, a Sunni extremist from Iran’s archrival, Saudi Arabia, could look across the Muslim world’s religious divide to partner with the Mideast’s Shiite power to target his ultimate enemy, the U.S. “Anyone who wants to strike America, Iran is ready to support him and help him with their frank and clear rhetoric,” the report reads. The material also included video of bin Laden’s son Hamza,

CULTURE In the three weeks since the string of allegations against Harvey Weinstein began, an ongoing domino effect has tumbled through not just Hollywood but at least a dozen other industries. It’s open season on open secrets. Nearly every day has brought new allegations of sexual harassment, assault or misconduct, and subsequent firings, dismissals or the distancing of men in various stations of power, from highly regarded media pundits to celebrity chefs. “There is no turning back,” Asia Argento tweeted Wednesday. “All predators will go down.” Argento, the Italian filmmaker and actress who has said Weinstein raped her, declared that shortly after allegations of sexual harassment were leveled by six women against filmmaker Brett Ratner. (Weinstein has denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex, while Ratner has denied each allegation against him.) What’s unfolding, women’s rights advocates say, is a rolling reckoning that’s gaining steam with every new revelation of sexual harassment. What began with just a handful of women standing up against one of Hollywood’s most pugnacious power players has turned into a movement of its own. In the three weeks since the first allegations were leveled against Weinstein, there have been at least 20 prominent men who have been forced to defend or apologize for past actions. Sari Kamin was one of 38 women who came forward to The Los Angeles Times to say that the director James Toback sexually harassed her by luring her with the possibility of a film role. Toback has denied the claims but within days the number of
alleged victims climbed past 300. “Listening to women come out from the Harvey Weinstein fallout, that certainly empowered me,” Kamin said. “It brought back a lot of painful memories and kind of unlocked something. It made me think: Well, if they can come forward, maybe so can I.” An air of “who’s next?” has settled over not just Hollywood, but elsewhere, too. NBC News terminated Mark Halperin’s contract amid allegations that
he sexually harassed a dozen women while at ABC News. John Besh, a New Orleans celebrity chef, stepped down from the company he founded after more than two dozen allegations of sexual harassment. Two executives at Fidelity Investments were forced out for sexual harassment. It has been a head-spinning few weeks that some believe is adding up to a landmark moment for a pervasive and underreported problem. Up to 85 percent of women say that they have
CNN: Jared Kushner’s team turned over documents to special counsel in Russia probe
been sexually harassed at work, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, but only a fraction of those cases are reported. In the wake of the Weinstein saga, millions of women have posted “me too” on social media, sharing their individual stories of sexual assault and harassment. “I’m sensing a cultural shift,” said Fatima Goss Graves, president of the National Women’s Law Center. “In an issue that has usually been met with widespread disbelief and shaming, people have been able to really tell their stories of harassment and violence without shaming, without discounting and disbelief. And that’s really empowering. I don’t think you can just put that back into a box.” Some, however, are concerned that the Weinstein saga is unfairly tarring men with the same brush of scandal — that those who might be considered merely lecherous are being conflated with predators. “As we grapple with these issues, we desperately need nuance,” Cathy Young, a contributing editor at Reason, wrote in an op-ed for The Los Angeles Times. “Let’s distinguish between abuse, minor bad behavior and innocent miscommunication. And let’s not demonize men or patronize women.” Yet others see this domino effect as a long-overdue culmination in the decades-long fight for gender equality. “Women speaking out about sexual harassment reminds me of one of the core reasons we came together for the march,” said Teresa Shook, one of the organizers of January’s Women’s March. “ ‘Hear our voice’ was a unifying mantra for ‘we will not be silent anymore.’ ” JAKE COYLE (AP)
Hidden chamber found in Egypt’s Great Pyramid ARCHAEOLOGY Scientists say they’ve found a hidden chamber in Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza, in what would be the first such discovery in the structure since the 19th century and one likely to spark a new surge of interest in the pharaohs. In an article published in the journal Nature on Thursday, an international team said the 30-meter void deep within the pyramid is situated above the structure’s Grand Gallery, and has a similar cross-section. The purpose of the space is unclear, and it’s not yet known whether it was built with a function in mind or if it’s merely a gap in the pyramid’s architecture. Some experts say such empty spaces have been known for years. “This is a premier,” said Mehdi Tayoubi, a co-founder of the ScanPyramids project. “It could be composed of one or several structures … maybe it could be another Grand Gallery. It could be a chamber, it could be a lot of things.” The scientists made the discovery using cosmic-ray imaging, recording the behavior of subatomic particles called muons that penetrate the rock like X-rays, only deeper. Chances of the space containing treasure or burial chambers are almost nil, said Aidan Dodson, an Egyptologist at the University of Bristol, but the discovery helps shed light on building techniques. Mystery men up front Wave of injuries forces Redskins to play relative unknowns on the offensive line NFL As the Redskins scattered across three practice fields to begin individual drills Wednesday, coach Jay Gruden watched as offensive line coach Bill Callahan instructed his linemen near one of the end zones. With four of Washington’s five starting offensive linemen on a separate field rehabbing their injuries, Gruden stopped and blurted, “Who the hell are these masked men over here?” After a wave of injuries required an infusion of new faces, it’s a valid question. There are 12 offensive linemen on the 53-man roster, including three signed in the last week. Six of them are hurt to some degree, including all five starters.
Only one starter, right tackle Morga n Moses, practiced Wednesday, while Trent Williams, Brandon Scherff, Shawn Lauvao and Spencer Long did not participate. Washington’s offensive line has been a stable unit since 2015, but the Redskins could start their third offensive line combination in as many weeks Sunday in Seattle. “I think we have to go with the guys that are practicing right now,” Gruden said. “We have to prepare them to get ready to play. Anybody of these guys who did not participate, if they get ready, it’d be a bonus.” Rookies Chase Roullier and Tyler Catalina made their first career starts at center and right guard against Dallas last
Preparing for noise Further complicating a patchwork offensive line that could feature four backups in starting roles: simply communicating at CenturyLink Field, widely known as one of the loudest venues in the NFL. week, and they would likely start again if Long (knees) and Scherff (knee) can’t play. Scherff returned to practice in a limited capacity Thursday, and Gruden said “things are looking up” for the Pro Bowl right guard. Williams will likely miss his
second consecutive game because of a right knee injury, so T.J. Clemmings, who was claimed off waivers before the season opener, would be in line to start at left tackle if Ty Nsekhe doesn’t return from a core muscle injury that sidelined him for four games. Lauvao suffered a stinger Sunday that could keep him out. Arie Kouandjio, who was cut by Washington before the season and signed off the Ravens practice squad Saturday, filled in at left guard and will probably do so again if Lauvao doesn’t play. Washington’s offensive line allowed four sacks and nine QB hits in last week’s loss to Dallas. It blocked for a run game that gained just 49 yards.
It’s been a wild week in the NFL with trades at the deadline, more injuries and the beginning of a notable suspension. As a result, these three players will step into the spotlight. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Martinez takes aim at a title Nationals new manager sets World Series goal in introduction to town
Astros’ victory is a win for all analytics brains JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)
MLB Rookie manager Dave Martinez certainly knows his audience. Whether his words were intended for the man seated to his left in the Nationals Park clubhouse — general manager Mike Rizzo — the ownership group watching from the front row or fans watching Thursday’s introductory news conference, Martinez kept sounding the same note. “This team doesn’t lack much. It really doesn’t. I think we’ve just got to get over the fact that we’re not here just to win a playoff game,” Martinez said. “We’re here to win the World Series.” Heady stuff for a franchise that has collected four NL East crowns in the past six years but never won a single postseason series — not to mention for a man who never has been a manager. Rizzo used the term “co-manager” when describing Martinez’s work over the past decade as a bench coach for Joe Maddon with the Cubs and the Rays. “The only thing ‘first time’ about Davey [is that] he’s never had the title ‘manager,’ ” Rizzo said. “... But he’s really done most of the job that a manager has to
At his first news conference as an MLB manager, Dave Martinez listed communication and collaboration as strengths.
do. He’s very prepared for it and I think it’s going to be a comfortable transition for him.” Martinez, 53, replaces Dusty Baker, who wasn’t invited back after two division titles and two one-run Game 5 losses at home. Asked to describe the trait that suits him best for his new duties, Martinez listed “positive energy” and a “hands-on” approach. “I love talking to players, I love conversations with players.

UConn tops preseason poll for record-tying 12th time
The Nationals announced Thursday that their mutual option with Adam Lind — $5 million for 2018 — was declined, though it was not immediately clear who declined it. Lind joins Jayson Werth, Howie Kendrick, Jose Lobaton, and Stephen Drew as key bench pieces who now have the chance to sign elsewhere. Relievers Brandon Kintzler, Matt Albers, Joe Blanton, and Oliver Perez are also notable free agents. (TWP)
Connecticut matched Tennessee on Wednesday for the most alltime appearances at No. 1 in the AP preseason women’s basketball poll. A unanimous pick, the Huskies topped the rankings for a 12th time. UConn returns four starters and opens its season on Nov. 12 against No. 10 Stanford. The Huskies went on to win the national title in seven of the years they were preseason No. 1. Maryland is ranked 15th. (AP)
Nationals hire hitting coach Kevin Long away from Mets
It’s my strong suit,” he said. “I [will]collaborate a lot with front office, Mike, ownership to get it right.” Martinez interviewed when the Nats hired Matt Williams — another rookie manager — after the 2013 season. But Rizzo said Martinez, who got a three-year contract with an option for a fourth, was different this time. “Four years ago,” Rizzo said, “a lot of it was about the process
of ‘Joe and myself, Joe and myself.’ And this was about how he does things.” Martinez is Washington’s sixth manager in the past decade. So when Rizzo, whose own contract ends after next season, was asked about the hiring process that led to Martinez, a joke was in order. “Well, we’re good at it. We know what we’re doing,” the GM said. “We’ve had a lot of practice at it.” HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)

MLB Someday in the future, the ascension of the Astros may be remembered as the moment the analytics movement conquered baseball for good. With its march to a World Series title, Houston validated one of the most extreme tank-jobs ever — a four-year stretch from 2011-14 in which they traded veterans, shed payroll and lost an average of 104 games. They hoarded high draft picks to form the youthful core of the 2017 champs: Carlos Correa, Lance McCullers Jr. and Alex Bregman, as well as the trade chips that brought them ace Justin Verlander this August. Others, such as World Series MVP George Springer and likely AL MVP Jose Altuve, pre-date the tanking era. Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow holds degrees in engineering from Penn and business administration from Northwestern. His first hire was Sig Mejdal, a former engineer for NASA and Lockheed Martin who took on the job title of Astros’ “director of decision sciences.” Manager A.J. Hinch served as the perfect bridge between the front office and the players. A Stanford grad with a degree in psychology, the 43-year-old is the perfect modern manager: young, warm, smart, open to new ideas and free of the ego and experience that might make a more old-school manger bristle at the intrusion of the front office in on-field decisions. Is Miami’s record fool’s gold? Undefeated Hurricanes have taken advantage of a soft schedule so far

COLLEGE FOOTBALL Of course an oversized gold chain has come to represent the resurgence of Miami football. The 10-karat gold rope is three feet long and adorned with an oversized charm in the shape and colors of the “U” logo of the Hurricanes. The “Turnover Chain” is making frequent appearances on the Miami sideline this season. An assistant coach places it on a player after he intercepts a pass or forces a fumble. Then that player flaunts the bling and implores fans to join the celebration. During Saturday’s 24-19 win at North Carolina, Miami supporters proudly displayed homemade chains following each of the Hurricanes’ four takeaways. It’s all so unapologetically “The U.” “Yeah, that’s Miami, you know. We’re trendsetters,” junior safety Jaquan Johnson said after leading the Hurricanes with 10 solo tackles against the Tar Heels. “With that chain, everybody wants to be in Miami.” The bravado associated with the Hurricanes’ most prosperous stretch during the 1980s and early ’90s is taking root again thanks to a 7-0 start. The next step in reclaiming the dominance of that era is contending for a national championship.
Miami has regained its swagger ahead of Saturday’s game vs. Virginia Tech.
The Hurricanes were ranked 10th in the first College Football Playoff poll released Tuesday, lowest among undefeated Power Five schools because of a weak schedule and difficulty dispatching those inferior opponents. Miami has won its last four games by a combined 18 points. Only one of those opponents, Georgia Tech, owns a winning record in the ACC. “I’ve done it too long to apologize for winning,” said Mark Richt, in his second season as the Hurricanes’ coach after 15 seasons at Georgia. COLLEGE FOOTBALL The noise about a playoff bid and the Heisman Trophy is getting louder around No. 3 Notre Dame as it prepares for Saturday’s visit from Wake Forest (3:30, NBC). Coach Brian Kelly and his staff are trying to tone down the hoopla surrounding the Fighting Irish (7-1), who have six impressive victories since losing by a point to No. 1 Georgia. Junior running back Josh Adams, fifth in the nation in rushing with 1,169 yards, has emerged as a contender for the Heisman and other postseason awards. “We’ve made them aware of the fact that there will be more noise as you continue to win,” Kelly said after Adams rushed for 202 yards, including a 77-yard TD, in a 35-14 win over N.C. State. “Our process is to refocus on what’s important now, ... our preparation.” After the Demon Deacons, the Irish play at No. 10 Miami, host Navy and close the regular season at No. 21 Stanford. Including Wake Forest, Notre Dame’s remaining opponents have a combined winning percentage of .767 (23-7). The Irish made the top four of the first College Football Playoff Rankings, but linebacker Nyles Morgan said he missed the Tuesday night show. “Guys feel kind of like how I felt; outside looking in, it’s all hype,” he said. “Heisman, playoffs, yada, yada, yada. I’m serious — we’re really just focused on beating Wake Forest.” JOHN FINERAN (AP)
longest active run in major college football and the school’s longest winning streak in 15 years. A triumph Saturday night at home against No. 13 Virginia Tech (7-1, 3-1) combined with Georgia Tech beating Virginia would deliver Miami its first ACC Coastal division title. The Hurricanes are still waiting for the offense to catch up with a defense that ranks 20th in FBS in points allowed (18.7 per game) and is tied for 24th in total takeaways with 16. “That seems to be the story of the year, and it’s something that’s unacceptable, honestly,” wide receiver Braxton Berrios said of the Hurricanes’ narrow wins. “We’ve got to start firing on all cylinders soon, or it’s really going to catch up to us.” GENE WANG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Foggy Bottom L
ocated in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., Foggy Bottom has become one of the most highly sought-after neighborhoods to live in within the District. Home to George Washington University, the Kennedy Center, and steps from the White House, it’s no surprise that this area is so popular. You’ll also find streets lined with beautiful row houses and great apartments like The 925 Apartments. After living in Foggy Bottom for the past year, here’s my perspective on why it’s definitely worth all the hype:
Restaurants With over 50 restaurants in Foggy Bottom, you will never run out of options. A local favorite is South Block, where you can get fresh smoothies and delicious acai bowls on a hot day. Another local classic is Penn Grill, a build-your-own-stir fry bar to which both students and office workers flock for lunch and dinner. Don’t forget to stop
by the GW Deli for a great egg and cheese bagel. Crepeaway is a popular dining spot where you can get sweet and savory crepes, and what’s more: the restaurant stays open until 4am on the weekends and becomes a dance club! Finally, the constant line out the door seems to cement the Founding Farmers restaurant as the true Foggy Bottom favorite.
Transportation The Foggy Bottom GWU Metro Station makes all of DC easily accessible to the residents of Foggy Bottom. The Blue, Silver, and Orange lines all make stops here, along with many buses. Don’t forget to stop by the FRESHFARM Farmers’ Market right outside the Metro every Wednesday from 3-7pm for some fresh fruits, veggies, and great food. Public transportation not your schtick? DC is super bike-friendly, and you can pick up an affordable bicycle at shops like the familyowned District Hardware and Bike. Foggy Bottom also has easy access to the George

Culture Nestled in the NW quadrant of DC, Foggy Bottom is surrounded by both historical and cultural DC landmarks. Foggy Bottom is steps away from the National Monuments, which never seem to get old. Be sure to visit the monuments with your friends late at night to experience the Mall with fewer tourists. Looking for a fun activity? Take the free shuttle from the George Washington Memorial Hospital over to the Kennedy Center for their free concert at 6pm every night. Residents also enjoy strolling through Georgetown on the weekends for some shopping. It is easy to have an exciting night life with a location close to many clubs and bars. Some of the most popular are in nearby Dupont Circle and on U Street. Within Foggy Bottom you can find many federal government offices, including the State

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
Hilarity ensues: ‘Ragnarok’ has fun breaking the rules When I was an utterly pretentious grad student, the phrase “I’m a genre theorist” was said more than once. By me. I know. I’m sorry. What I say now that I’m a more normal, functioning adult is that I’m always interested in how we categorize movies. I’m even more interested in movies that bend the rules, if not subvert them entirely. Two of my favorite films are “The Searchers” and “Fargo.” The former is a Western with either a sympathetic black hat or a problematic white (supremacist) hat at its center, while the latter is a crime procedural about a cop with the steely determination of the Terminator who is also a
pregnant woman dusted with a heavy coat of Minnesota Nice. I’m a genre theorist (gag), so I spent most of “Thor: Ragnarok” wondering what kind of movie I was watching. Actually, I spent most of it cracking up because the movie is wonderfully campy and utterly hilarious. But during the times I could catch my breath, I thought about it. Usually superhero franchises progress like so: The first movie is about the hero filling the role laid out for him or her. The second is about what happens when he or she feels the role is too big or small. The third is about how much more merchandise the studio feels it can sell ... disguised as a story about the hero growing into his power and personality. Thanks to Thor’s appearances
in the various Avengers movies, we’ve seen him do all that, so instead we get an ensemble comedy that just happens to have a bunch of people with superpowers at its center. We also get a kindly Kiwi rock monster (voiced by director Taika Waititi) that steals every scene he’s in. Which is new. A major rule of the modern superhero genre — particularly the Marvel films — is there has to be an Issue at the center of the movie and a Meaning at its end. I don’t have a problem with that; comics and superheroes have always been a lens through which we can look at ourselves. That said, comics and superheroes are also meant to be fun. “Ragnarok” is built on a foundation of joy and wonder and wit (Tom Hiddleston’s
‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (PG-13, 130 min.) DIRECTOR: Taika Waititi STARS: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett IN A NUTSHELL: Imprisoned without his mighty hammer, Thor must find a way back to Asgard to stop the destruction of his home world.

Loki in particular is finally having some fun, which is nice because he’s the GOD OF MISCHIEF, which is different than being a bad guy). The movie is silly, but not stupid. It uses physical comedy without the joke ever being “lol that guy fell down” and uses verbal comedy to expand and deepen relationships we thought we already knew. One running joke gives a more meaningful glimpse into Thor and Loki’s childhood than we ever got with any anguished scream of “YOU WERE MY BROTHER.” So no, “Thor: Ragnarok” doesn’t follow the rules of superhero movies. No angst, no Issue, not even a hint of romantic tension or damsel in distress (Thor and girlfriend Jane Foster have ended their relationship thanks to a “mutual dumping,” says the God of Thunder). Instead, it celebrates the fun and fantasy that gave birth to comics in the first place. Waititi tossed the rulebook out the window and two hours of fantastic fun came flying back. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby
In “The Square,” a curator (Claes Bang) at a swank museum in Stockholm is sent down a rabbit hole of revenge and consequences after he’s robbed. With its cool style and mordant humor, “The Square” may be one of the most timely films of the season. But, while the film attempts to puncture the pretensions of the modern art world, it never adds up to more than its very attractive parts. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘Novitiate’ R, 123 min.
“Novitiate” tells the tale of a young nun in training (Margaret Qualley) at the convent of a religious order in 1964. But when our heroine falls for another novice nun, she begins to question not just her religious convictions but her sense of self. “Novitiate,” in other words, isn’t about a woman entering the cloister, but one coming out, as it were, a chrysalis. Ready for the mother lode? The ‘Bad Moms’ sequel adds more moms — and more of the same
Reiner’s ‘LBJ’ paints only a partial portrait
STX ENTERTAINMENT
FILM REVIEW A little more than a year after “Bad Moms” became the surprise hit of summer 2016, the inspirationally lax trio of mothers is back for another, more seasonally focused round in “A Bad Moms Christmas.” That was a fast turnaround — and it shows with a good idea and a stellar cast lost inside a sloppy script that mostly retreads last year’s laughs. Writer-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have returned, along with stars Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell, playing put-upon parents sent to the brink by the demands of holiday decorating, gift wrapping and gingerbread house making. To add an extra layer of pressure this year, the mothers of Kiki (Bell), Amy (Kunis) and Carla (Hahn) are visiting for the holidays. This is an ideal chance for the sequel to explore new territory; the complexity of mother-daughter dynamics could supply ample material for a movie, especially because each pairing is different. Amy’s mom, Ruth (Christine Baranski), is a snooty perfectionist who’s never satisfied, and Kiki’s mother, Sandy (Cheryl Hines), is so obsessed with her daughter that a restraining order might be necessary. Then there’s Isis (Susan Sarandon), who pops out of the passenger seat of an 18-wheeler in front of Carla’s

house and immediately lights up a joint. She hasn’t been heard from in three years — since the last time she needed money — but now she’s back to dote on her family for Christmas. The push and pull between these mothers and daughters is neither as insightful nor as amusing as it could have been. Really, it’s just an excuse for the three original moms to revisit their arcs from the first time around, when they were tearing their hair out in frustration until they reached their breaking point — causing major mayhem inside of a grocery store. (This time the nearly shot-for-shot re-creation unfolds in a shopping mall, and the novelty has worn off.) The movie also tries to mine laughs

‘A Bad Moms Christmas’ (R, 104 min.)
DIRECTORS: Jon Lucas, Scott Moore STARS: Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn IN A NUTSHELL: The three rebellious women from 2016’s “Bad Moms” get even more nuts when their own moms come visit for the holidays.
from the incongruity of hearing well-heeled older folks drop expletives, which seems pretty ho-hum at this point. The sequel never quite captures the disarming hilarity of the original, with one notable exception. When single mom Carla, a professional bikini waxer, has to tend to the most tender areas
of a male stripper (Justin Hartley of “This Is Us” fame) — and ends up falling in love — the results are snort-out-loud funny. The wacky romance that follows is a big upgrade from the lackluster flirtation at the heart of the first movie. The beauty of “Bad Moms” was that it catered to an audience that Hollywood often leaves behind, and its success only highlighted the viability of women-centric stories. The good news is movie studios are apparently getting the message — except that they’re rushing out uninspired facsimiles. Maybe they should take a lesson from the movie itself: Stressed out moms deserve better. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
RATINGS
The estimated number of people who watched the Season 2 premiere of “Stranger Things” on a TV set in its debut weekend on Netflix, according to Nielsen, which said last month that it would begin reporting streaming platforms’ viewership. The company also said in its report that the nine-part second season, which arrived Oct. 27, averaged 4 million viewers per episode that weekend. Approximately 361,000 people binged the entire season within the first 24 hours of its release. (EXPRESS) “Counterpart,” a new Starz thriller series starring J.K. Simmons, to debut Jan. 21
FILM REVIEW No actor seems to have as much fun bringing to life the cagey and colorful Lyndon Baines Johnson as Woody Harrelson in “LBJ.” It’s a kick to watch his blustery good ol’ boy threaten to take a hatchet to one underling’s male member after the aide fails to deliver an exact vote count on a bill, and later, as he indulges in a leisurely open-door bathroom break during a meeting with two advisers. Yet director Rob Reiner keeps the movie surrounding these shenanigans reined in. The film presents a mostly linear account of how Johnson unexpectedly found himself seated in the Oval Office after President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 assassination. As “LBJ” tells it, Kennedy brought sex appeal to the 1960 Democratic ticket, while Johnson provided experience in the trenches. Together, this odd couple fought to deliver a progressive agenda that initially pivoted around what would become the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But, suddenly, LBJ had to fly solo and steady a grieving nation. Given the recent sharpening of racial tensions and violence, it’s easy to see why a Hollywood liberal like Reiner would focus on that part of LBJ’s legacy — rather than, say, his escalation of the Vietnam War, which would prove to be his downfall. The story seems to suggest this political alliance was the start of a mighty partnership that ended too soon. SUSAN WLOSZCZYNA (TWP)

SUMMARY: Margot Robbie is the picture of grace, elegance and style, so the only thing to do is perm up her hair and slap a lot of glitter on her. Based on the true story of figure skater Tonya Harding, the movie goes beyond the knee-whacking scandal she’s most known for and into her family life, personal demons and mommy issues. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: When modern science finds a way to shrink humans to 5 inches tall, a couple (Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig) take a leap of faith to go live in a small-scale world. Well, that‘s until Wiig backs out after Damon’s already downsized, leaving him to fend for his itty-bitty self. But Jason Sudeikis is there, so you know all is fine. BRYANNA CAPPADONA (EXPRESS)

that predicted that the Houston Astros would win the World Series in 2017. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Call us when it’s an ‘I Heart JB’ shirt Following nearly a week of public outings together, exes Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez made their most public show of reconciliation Wednesday when Gomez attended Bieber’s hockey game in Los Angeles. According to several tabloids, Gomez appeared to be wearing Bieber’s Red Devils jersey as the two emerged from the arena. Bieber and Gomez, who dated on and off from 2010 to 2014, had gone bicycling in L.A. earlier that day. Sources told E!
