Just one write-in vote will win an election for a county post in western Michigan. Christopher Johnston lost the August primary for a seat on Montcalm County Board of Commissioners. Ron Braman’s victory meant he would run unopposed in the Nov. 6 election. But Braman died on Oct. 24. Johnston met the deadline to sign up as a write-in candidate, and no one else did. So he only needs a single vote, even his own, to win on Tuesday. (AP)

Leaving Martha’s Table THE DISTRICT Patty Stonesifer, president and CEO of Martha’s Table, was leading a tour of the nonprofit last year when she noticed a child crying in the hallway. “Rather than speeding on to where we were going, Patty picks up the child, and the child calms down,” recalled Johnnetta Cole, who sits on the organization’s board. “She’s a force of nature, but what really inspired me and others about her is how incredibly approachable she is.” For her colleagues, the image of the high-powered executive interrupting her work to comfort someone small encapsulates Stonesifer, 62, who announced Friday that she will be retiring from Martha’s Table. The news comes nearly six years after she turned heads by taking the helm of the D.C. food pantry and family services organization. Her decision to head the small local charity surprised the Washington nonprofit community because her career until then had been so turbocharged. One of the

thrift shop. In the past three years, the organization has created 53 “Joyful Food Markets” — free monthly pop-ups at schools in Wards 7 and 8 aimed at providing fresh produce in areas seen as food deserts. Stonesifer’s tenure culminated this summer in a move from the 14th Street NW space Martha’s Table had occupied since 1980 to a $20 million, state-of-the-art facility near downtown Anacostia. The new headquarters houses a school and a vegetable and herb garden, and has retractable walls and a sweeping view of the District. It is also closer to the homes of many who need Martha’s Table the most. Lindsay Morton, who oversees the markets and counts Stonesifer as a mentor, said Stonesifer’s down-to-earth nature was the right fit for the organization. “Martha’s Table has been able to be in existence for so long because of its mom-and-pop feeling,” she said. Until Friday, Stonesifer had told just a few people she was leaving. “She told me yesterday, and I cried,” Morton said. “We cried together.” TARA BAHRAMPOUR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Polar bear half sisters debut at zoo Two young polar bears, Amelia Gray and Neva, made their public debut Thursday at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. The bears came to the zoo in early October from Ohio’s Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. They underwent a mandatory quarantine as they acclimated to their new home. Zookeepers described Neva as “very independent and curious,” and Amelia Gray as “spunky and a bit particular.” Both are playful. The bears, both of whom are almost 2 years old, are half sisters. NoVa favored for Amazon
ARLINGTON COUNTY Amazon.com has held advanced discussions about the possibility of opening its highly sought-after second headquarters in Crystal City, including how quickly it would move employees there, which buildings it would occupy and how an announcement about the move would be made to the public, according to people close to the process. The discussions were more detailed than those the company has had regarding other locations in Northern Virginia and some other cities nationally, adding to speculation that the site in Arlington County is a frontrunner to land the online retail giant’s second North American headquarters and its 50,000 jobs. The company is so close to making its choice that Crystal City’s top real estate developer, JBG Smith, has pulled some of its buildings off the leasing market and officials in the area have discussed how to make an announcement to the public this month, following the midterm elections, according to public and private-sector officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because Amazon has asked that the selection process remain confidential. The company may be having similar discussions with other finalists. “There’s a lot of activity,” one individual close to the process

said. The person added that people “seem really positive, and they seem pretty confident. … What we don’t know, maybe there are two or three other sites, and they’re doing the same thing. That’s what’s scary to people around here.” At a conference in New York on Thursday, Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos told the crowd: “Ultimately, the decision will be made with intuition after gathering and studying a lot of data — for a decision like that, as far as I know, the best way to make it is you collect as much data as you can, you immerse yourself in that data but then you make the decision with your heart.” (Bezos owns The
Site speculation Two people close to the process said that if Crystal City was selected, Amazon was likely to move an initial group of several hundred employees into 1851 S. Bell St. or 1770 Crystal Drive, two dated office buildings that have been targeted for redevelopment but could be readied for occupancy by their owner, JBG Smith, in nine months or less. The bid also includes sites in Potomac Yard, in Alexandria. (TWP)
Washington Post and Express.) Spokesmen for Amazon and JBG Smith declined to comment. Alexandria Mayor Allison Silberberg declined to discuss
whether advanced talks were taking place, but she said, “We think we’ve put forward a very competitive option, and we’re certainly honored to be considered.” Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, asked on WTOP Radio on Wednesday about speculation that Crystal City was the front-runner, said: “A lot of us are anxiously awaiting a decision, an announcement from Amazon. … A lot of [Virginia] resources are being expended right now, and I think for good reason.” A spokesman for Northam declined to comment further on Friday. But after publication of this story, Mike Grella, director of economic development for Amazon, posted on Twitter: “Memo to the genius leaking info about Crystal City, VA as #HQ2 selection. You’re not doing Crystal City, VA any favors. And stop treating the NDA you signed like a used napkin,” he said in reference to the nondisclosure agreements that Amazon required finalists to sign. Betting sites give Northern Virginia the most likely odds of landing the project, and stock analysts have sweetened their view of JBG Smith — owner of most of Crystal City — as Amazon’s announcement has approached. Analysts at Stifel Nicolaus recently upgraded the company from “Sell” to “Hold” and say just the possibility that Amazon chooses Crystal City has added four or five dollars to the company’s stock price. City could let 16-year-olds vote in local, federal races The D.C. Council is preparing to vote on a bill to lower the voting age to 16 for all elections, both local and federal. WTOP-FM reports the bill won 3-0 approval in the Judiciary and Public Safety committee Thursday and will get a final vote before the full council this month. The U.S. Constitution guarantees citizens 18 and older the right to vote, but scholars have said it doesn’t prevent a state, or in this case, the nation’s capital, from setting a lower age. Council member Charles Allen said his bill will “enfranchise [D.C.’s] young people and bring their voices into the political process.” (AP) BALTIMORE

including that he had once been banned from FSU’s campus and had been arrested twice for Beierle grabbing women. The charges were ultimately dropped. Beierle appeared to post a series of videos on YouTube in 2014 in which he called women “whores” if they dated black men, said many black women were “disgusting” and described himself as a misogynist. A Tallahassee police spokesman would not confirm or deny the videos were Beierle’s. However, the man in the videos looks like Beierle and biographical details mentioned in the videos

In one video, the man said promiscuous women deserved to be crucified and suggested laying land mines to keep people from crossing into the U.S. from Mexico. In another, the man who appeared to be Beierle likened his adolescent self to Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old who killed six students and wounded more than a dozen others near the University of California, Santa Barbara, before killing himself in 2014. Militias make way to border IMMIGRATION Gun-carrying civilian groups and border vigilantes have heard a call to arms in President Trump’s warnings about threats to American security posed by caravans of Central American migrants moving through Mexico. They’re packing coolers and tents, oiling rifles and tuning up aerial drones, with plans to form caravans of their own and trail American troops to the border. “We’ll observe and report, and offer aid in any way we can,” said Shannon McGauley, a bail bondsman in the Dallas suburbs who is president of the Texas Minutemen. McGauley said he was preparing to head for the Rio Grande in the coming days. McGauley and others have been roused by the president’s call to restore order and defend the country against what Trump has called “an invasion,” as thousands of Central American migrants advance slowly through Mexico toward the U.S. border. Trump has insisted that “unknown Middle Easterners,” “tough fighters” and large numbers of criminals are traveling among the women, children and families heading north on foot. The Texas Minutemen have 100 volunteers en route to the Rio Grande who want to help stop the migrants, with more on the way. “I can’t put a number on it,” McGauley said. “My phone’s been

ringing nonstop for the last seven days. You got other militias, and husbands and wives, people coming from Oregon, Indiana. We’ve even got two from Canada.” Asked whether his group planned to deploy with weapons, McGauley laughed. “This is Texas, man,” he said. The prospect of armed vigilantes showing up beside thousands of U.S. troops is considered serious enough that military planners have issued warnings to Army commanders. According to military planning documents obtained by Newsweek, the military is concerned about “unregulated militia members self-deploying to the border in alleged support” of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
“They would be trigger-happy. If they shot someone, they might just say the person they shot was reaching for a gun.” LUCY KRUSE, a 96-year-old South Texas resident, on incoming militias
The assessment estimates that 200 militia members could show up. “They operate under the guise of citizen patrols,” the report said, while warning of “incidents of unregulated militias stealing National Guard equipment during deployments.”
Manuel Padilla Jr., the top Border Patrol official in the agency’s Rio Grande Valley sector, said he has not issued any instructions to agents in the field or to landowners whose properties are adjacent to the river. But he plans to meet with community members this week, he said, to address their concerns. McGauley said that in addition to weapons and camping gear, his group will have night-vision goggles and aerial drones with thermal sensing equipment. He emphasized that the group would report any suspicious activity to authorities and would heed any instructions from Border Patrol agents or military personnel. Michael Vickers, who lives an hour north of the border, said that he will not let militia members from outside the area onto his property and that he doubts landowners would trust outsiders. “They are a bunch of guys with a big mouth,” said Vickers, a Republican who heads the 300-strong Texas Border Volunteers. The group doesn’t call itself a militia, although it patrols ranchland to intercept migrants who hike through the brush. His group is in a “holding pattern,” he said, adding that they would help keep landowners’ properties from being vandalized if Border Patrol doesn’t. Lucy Kruse, 96, is more reluctant: “I will not let militia on my land. They’re civilians stepping into a situation where the Border Patrol is supposed to be in control.” MARY LEE GRANT AND NICK MIROFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Utah mayor killed in attack in Afghanistan Brent Taylor, the mayor of North Ogden, Utah, and a father of seven, was killed in action Saturday while serving a 12-month deployment in Afghanistan as a member of the Army National Guard, officials confirmed. The 39-year-old was killed in an apparent insider attack after a member of the Afghan security forces opened fire at a base in Kabul where foreign troops provide training to Afghan forces. The attack wounded another U.S. service member. News of Taylor’s death brought shock and grief to the Utah community where he had served as mayor since 2013. “I hate this. I’m struggling for words,” Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox posted Saturday. “I love Mayor Taylor, his amazing wife Jennie and his 7 sweet kids. Utah weeps for them today. This war has once again cost us the best blood of a generation.” In January, Taylor told his constituents via Facebook Live that he had been called to help train Afghan commando units after President Trump had ordered an increase in U.S. troops in Afghanistan. “There are three great loyalties that have guided my life and everything in it: God, family and country,” Taylor said then. “I have given my life to serve all three of these loyalties whenever and however I can.” AMY B WANG

Hit-and-run kills 3 Girl Scouts, 1 adult Pickup truck struck troop members during road trash collection
LAKE HALLIE, WIS. A western Wisconsin community on Sunday was grieving the deaths of three Girl Scouts and an adult who were collecting trash along a rural highway when police say a pickup truck veered off the road and hit them before speeding away. Authorities have not released the names of the girls and the woman who were struck by the truck Saturday in Lake Hallie, including the name of a fourth girl who survived but was in critical condition at a hospital in Rochester, Minn. The girls were members of Troop 3055 and were fourth-grade students at Halmstad Elementary School in adjoining Chippewa Falls, which is about 90 miles east of Minneapolis. “Our hearts are broken for the girls and families of the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes,” CEO Sylvia Acevedo of Girl Scouts of the USA said in a statement Sunday. “The Girl Scout Movement everywhere stands with our sister Girl Scouts in Wisconsin to grieve and comfort one another in the wake of this terrible tragedy.” Lake Hallie police Sgt. Storms, floods kill at least 12 people; 2 still missing
Three Girl Scouts and one adult were killed Saturday when a Ford pickup truck veered into the roadside ditch where they were cleaning up trash.
Sokup said the pickup, a black Ford F-150, crossed a lane and veered into a roadside ditch, striking the victims. Other members of the troop were picking up trash from the opposite shoulder. The 21-year-old driver, Colten Treu of Chippewa Falls, sped off but later surrendered and will be charged with four counts of homicide, Sokup said. It was unclear Sunday if Treu had an attorney who could speak for him. Police misspelled Treu’s first name as “Colton” in initial news releases. Sokup said it was not immediately known if there were other factors that might have led the driver to leave the road. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported
that the crash happened before a hill and there were no blind spots, and Sokup said it was “not an unsafe area.” But Cecily Spallees, a personal care attendant at a group home near the crash site, told the newspaper that drivers regularly speed on that stretch of road, which quickly changes from a 55-mph to a 35-mph zone. “I’m always telling one of my residents that he shouldn’t walk this strip at night,” Spallees said. “It’s not safe.” Troop 3055’s regional council, the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, expressed its condolences on Facebook and said a vigil would be held Sunday evening at the girls’ school. Democrats field more women and minorities, while the GOP runs mostly white men
Economy may be the GOP’s ’18 trump card
African-Americans plummeted. Republicans set out to attract more votes from minorities and particularly Latinos after their election losses in 2012, but Trump turned that political strategy on its head in 2016, showing they could win by pulling white voters away from Democrats. Now the president’s coalition is being put to the test. After conducting a poll of 72 competitive House districts, the Cook Political Report and LSU Manship School said this year’s election “feels like 2010, in reverse.” Almost half of Americans, 49 percent “feel frustrated” about Trump’s presidency. That’s the same share who said they felt frustrated about President Barack Obama during that year’s midterm elections, when Democrats lost the majority in a wave election fueled by conservative newcomers eager to confront the White House.
ANALYSIS Heading into Tuesday’s midterm elections, Democrats retain their advantage in the battle for the House, but Republicans could be buoyed by increasingly positive assessments of the economy and by President Trump’s harsh focus on immigration, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News national poll. The poll finds that registered voters prefer Democratic candidates for the House over Republican candidates by 50 percent to 43 percent. That marks a slight decline from last month, when Democrats led on the generic congressional ballot by 11 points. The Post-ABC News poll also showed the most optimistic attitude about the economy in nearly two decades, with 65 percent of all Americans rating the state of the economy as good or excellent and 34 percent offering a negative assessment. The last time optimism ranked so high was in January 2001. The president’s recent focus on immigration appears to have raised the importance of the issue in the minds of his party’s voters. Since a Post-ABC News poll three weeks ago, the share of Republicans saying immigration is “one of the most important issues” in their vote has grown from 14 percent to 21 percent. The share of Democrats saying immigration is a top issue has dropped from 23 percent to 11 percent. DAN BALZ AND SCOTT

MIDTERMS Perhaps nowhere is the choice facing voters Tuesday more vividly on display than in the battle for control of the U.S. House. Democrats are fielding more women and minority candidates than ever, while Republicans are trying to hold their majority with mostly white men. The disparity highlights a trend that has been amplified under President Trump, with the two parties increasingly polarized along gender and racial lines as much as by issues. Democrats have nominated more than 180 female candidates for the House, a new record. But while voters could send more than 100 of them to victory, Republicans could have fewer women in their ranks next year due to retirements and tough races, according to election analysts. Overall, nearly 9 in 10 House Republicans will likely be white men when the new Congress convenes in January. The racial divide is even starker. House Republicans now count just over a dozen minority members, a number that’s not expected to change much after the election. The lack of minorities comes into sharp visual focus when House Republicans gather in a large group, as they did last December when they celebrated the passage of tax cuts with Trump at the White House. Meanwhile, African-American, Latino and Asian-American lawmakers make up almost half the House Democratic caucus. And for the first time, less than half the Democratic candidates for the House are white men, and the Democrats are poised to send the first Native American and Muslim women to the House. It’s what the Reflective
Democracy Campaign calls a “historic shift.” After Tuesday’s election, it’s likely that 87 percent of Republicans in the House will be white men, compared to just 37 percent of Democrats, said David Wasserman, who analyzes races for the Cook Political Report. Marc Hetherington, a professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said the trend began long before this year’s election. “There’s a relatively easy explanation — the Republican Party over the past 20 years has become the party of white men,” he said. At the same time, “Democrats have come to be seen as the party of minorities.” Democrats need a net gain of 23 seats to win back the House in the election on Tuesday. Enthusiasm has seemed to be on their side, especially in fundraising, but it’s unclear if that energy will be enough to win districts
Trump’s focus on Senate President Trump appeared to distance himself from the fate of House Republican candidates Sunday as he devotes his final two days before Tuesday’s midterm elections to helping Senate and gubernatorial candidates. Speaking to reporters as he left the White House en route to get-out-the-vote rallies in Georgia and Tennessee on Sunday, Trump said: “I think we’re going to do well in the House. But, as you know, my primary focus has been on the Senate, and I think we’re doing really well in the Senate.” (AP)
that swung to Trump in 2016 or have traditionally favored Republicans. The diversity gap between the parties has been growing since the civil rights battles of the 1960s, when white voters shifted toward Republicans and the party’s support from

Julio Jones dives into the end zone Sunday for a 35-yard TD in the fourth quarter.
Bruised and battered
FALCONS 38, REDSKINS 14 As harbingers go, this was quite a start for the Redskins. After a 4-yard run on the opening play of the game, the host’s initial possession featured a holding penalty, a sack for a loss of 9 yards, an injured left knee for left guard Shawn Lauvao — who was taken to the locker room in a wheelchair — and a three-and-out punt. Nothing really went right for the mistake-prone Redskins on Sunday in a 38-14 loss to Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and the Atlanta Falcons that ended the threegame winning streak that put Washington atop the NFC East. “It was a bad game, but it was one game,” Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said. “We can’t let that happen again.” The Redskins’ defense that came in ranked No. 2 in the NFL against the run and No. 4 overall turned in a real clunker. Atlanta gained 154 yards on the ground, averaging 6.4 per carry. Worth noting: The Falcons last ran for more than 100 in Week 2.

Matt Ioannidis, center, reacts after the Redskins’ poor defensive showing.
“Caught us with our pants down and hit us in the mouth,” Redskins cornerback Josh Norman said. There were several other issues for the Redskins. At one point in the second quarter, Atlanta was outgaining Washington 22941. The Falcons were 8-for-8 on third-down conversions before halftime. Washington finished
with 10 penalties for 147 yards. Atlanta (4-4) began the third quarter with an eight-play drive that finished with Ryan’s third of four TD passes for the afternoon — a 10-yarder to running back Tevin Coleman — that boosted its advantage to 28-7. Washington then punted after its possession was derailed by

penalties: one for taunting on receiver Josh Doctson, another for unsportsmanlike conduct on right tackle Morgan Moses, and a holding call on right guard Brandon Scherff (who soon exited with a hurt left shoulder, joining starters Shawn Lauvao and left tackle Trent Williams, who had thumb surgery last week, on the sideline). Atlanta put together TD drives that covered 86, 81 and 75 yards in the first half, then another 75-yarder to begin the second. A Redskins secondary that added starting safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in a trade-deadline deal Tuesday gave up first-half TD passes by Ryan of 39 yards to Coleman and 40 yards to Calvin Ridley. The Redskins have thrived on offense with 33-year-old running back Adrian Peterson carrying the load. But he ran only nine times for a measly 17 yards through the opening two quarters. “Got to be better,” safety D.J. Swearinger said. “Got to be disciplined.” HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)

THE TAKEAWAY
‘Strengths’ of Redskins get exposed To win five of their first seven games, the Redskins controlled the clock, won in the trenches and took away the run. On Sunday, they struggled in nearly every aspect that could be credited for their early success. Washington entered the game against the Falcons with the second-ranked run defense, but Tevin Coleman, above, and Ito Smith combined for 148 yards. Meanwhile, Redskins RB Adrian Peterson, who came in with the fifth most rushing yards in the league, finished with 17 yards on nine carries. Washington, which had been one of the least penalized teams in the league, also committed 10 penalties for 147 yards Sunday. The Redskins also had the third-highest time of possession in the NFL before Sunday, when they had the ball for nearly six fewer minutes than the Falcons. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

Patrick Mahomes passed for 375 yards, threw three TD passes — two to Travis Kelce — as Kansas City’s impossible-to-handle offense kept rolling over the Browns, who played their first game since coach Hue Jackson’s firing. Kareem Hunt had two scoring runs and one receiving for the Chiefs (8-1). Cleveland (2-6-1) lost its fourth straight, but it looked better under interim coach Gregg Williams than with Jackson, fired on Monday after going 3-36-1 in twoplus seasons. (AP)
Saints running back Alvin Kamara racked up 116 total yards and scored three TDs in Sunday’s win over the Rams.

Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdown passes, ran for a score and put up an unexpected left-footed punt to help the Steelers beat the Ravens on Sunday. James Conner rushed for 107 yards and caught a touchdown pass for the Steelers (5-2-1), who have won four straight since falling to the Ravens at home on Sept. 30. The Ravens (4-5) scored only one touchdown in their third straight defeat, managing two field goals in the first half while falling behind 14-6. (AP)

Danielle Hunter had 3½ of Minnesota’s franchise-record 10 sacks and a fourth-quarter fumble return for a touchdown, making for a miserable afternoon for Matthew Stafford and the Lions. Hunter, the fourth-year defensive end, also was credited with nine tackles as the Vikings (5-3-1) limited the Lions to 214 total yards. As season ends, United looks to use resurgence as building block for ’19 D.C. UNITED Nick DeLeon sat in the Audi Field locker room Thursday night, hunched over in silence. An hour earlier, the D.C. United veteran scored on a volley deep into extra time of an Eastern Conference knockout match against the Columbus Crew. But that
heart-racing moment only lead to heartbreak: With the teams tied 2-2 after 120 minutes, it was DeLeon who skied the decisive shot in the penalty kick tiebreaker as Columbus moved on to the conference semifinals. It was an unceremonious end to United’s season after the team surged from last pace when Audi Field opened in mid-July to the fourth seed in the East. “It was a hell of a run,” United coach Ben Olsen said. “Don’t let

Wayne Rooney to return for England farewell in friendly vs. U.S. in London on Nov. 15
A sellout crowd of 20,600 took in Audi Field’s first playoff game. “We’re getting these fans that wouldn’t have come to games before, and they come to one game and I think they’re hooked,”
defender Steve Birnbaum said. Come the 2019 MLS season, which kicks off in March, United will carry renewed expectations. English star Wayne Rooney, whose 12 goals and seven assists in 20 games put him on the MLS MVP shortlist, will be around for his first full season. While Rooney is 33, attacking partner Luciano Acosta (10 goals and 17 assists) is just 24 years old. Key cogs such as Paul Arriola, Yamil Asad, Russell Canouse and Chris Durkin are also under 25. “We had no right to make the playoffs,” Rooney said. “To do that, we’ve brought belief back to the fans, we’ve brought belief back to the team — and we have to build on that now.” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

In “Homecoming,” Julia Roberts plays a counselor for soldiers re-entering normal life.
MUST-SEE THIS WEEK
1
Making the most of your screen time TV REVIEW It’s difficult, at first, to get in the right mood for “Homecoming,” an artfully absorbing government-conspiracy drama starring Julia Roberts and directed by “Mr. Robot’s” visionary creator Sam Esmail. The problem isn’t TV show gridlock; it’s that real life already happens to be depressingly full of false flags, dirty schemes and crackpot theories. “Homecoming” doesn’t feel like an escape from all that, but setting it aside to enjoy in some saner moment could be an unnecessarily long wait. In one sense, “Homecoming” is every bit as creepy and demoralizing as the times we live in; as a disciplined work of fiction, however, it seems safely removed from the headlines. Think of the Amazon series as one more reminder that we used to store the crazier ideas in the realm of make-believe. (Disclosure: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the owner of Express.)

Julia Roberts stars in the dark and concise drama ‘Homecoming’
The series is based on a podcast fictional series created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, who’ve helped Esmail refashion their audio-based narrative into a terrific, tightly strung tale of deceit and memory, in which a government contractor secretly tests a drug meant to erase the traumatic memories of soldiers, so that the veterans can be recycled back into battle while saving millions on mental health care. Roberts gives an impeccably Julia Roberts-esque performance as Heidi Bergman, a novice psychologist hired to oversee counseling at a facility benignly branded as Homecoming, a Tampa-based rehabilitation center where soldiers partake in programs designed to ease their re-entry into everyday life. Esmail makes great use of “Homecoming’s” vibe of paranoia and corporate wrongdoing, along with other techniques that made “Mr. Robot” such a trip. A parallel narrative, set four years ahead in 2022, indicates that something went wrong at Homecoming, with a Department of Defense investigator (Shea Whigham) now probing the situation.
‘Room 104’
Shea Whigham’s Department of Defense investigator tries to get to the bottom of a dark mystery.
A viewer can distinguish one timeline from the other by the vertically cropped frame of the future scenes and the fact that
Heidi now works as a waitress and lives with her mother (Sissy Spacek). In both timelines, Bobby Cannavale gives a fine performance as “Homecoming’s” villain, Colin Belfast, an opportunistic corporate striver who sold Homecoming’s true objective by browbeating Heidi and her co-workers into carrying it out. It’s worth emphasizing that “Homecoming” is a half-hour drama (a five-hour sit for the whole binge), which not only saves precious time for viewers but also, in Esmail’s hands, suggests all sorts of new ways to open, close and pace each chapter. Could this be the answer to peak-TV stress disorder? It bears studying. HANK STUEVER

A show hailed as England’s most popular BBC drama since “Downton Abbey” is now on Netflix. “Bodyguard,” which drew 11 million viewers for its September finale in the U.K., is about cop and security specialist David Budd (Richard Madden). In the first of six episodes, which all dropped Oct. 24, Budd and
his two kids are on a train to London. He’s on high alert, wondering why a train security officer looks so worried. Budd learns there’s an alert about a suicide bomber — and that a seemingly suspicious man went into a train restroom and hasn’t come out. The man emerges and seems harmless, but Budd checks out the W.C. — and finds the man’s wife, clad in a suicide bomb vest. The negotiations are taut and

Because it’s brilliantly done, with superbly restrained acting and an irresistibly suspenseful plot, pivoting around the age-old questions of who can you trust — and what twists will happen next? What if reality TV isn’t conducive to true love? “The Bachelorette’s” Kaitlyn Bristowe and Shawn Booth have broken up, the couple told People on Friday. The pair got engaged in 2015 on the Season 11 finale of the reality show. “After three incredible years, we have decided to go our separate ways,” a statement said. “We’re very much committed to remaining friends.” (EXPRESS)
Publicist forgets to lock all accounts Alec Baldwin has denied that he punched anyone over a parking spot and says an assault allegation is being reported “for the purposes of clickbait entertainment.” The actor was arrested Friday and charged with assault and harassment after allegedly hitting another man in the face during a dispute over a parking spot in New York City. Rather than use his own account, Baldwin tweeted from the account of the Hilaria and Alec Baldwin Foundation that “the assertion that I punched anyone over a parking spot is false. I wanted to go on the record stating as much.” (AP)

Justin BIeber and fiancee Hailey Baldwin have couples tattoos, with Bieber’s ink located on his face, according to Page Six. “He’s doing a good job of laying low,” celebrity tattoo artist Keith McCurdy told Page Six. “It’s really thin and delicate. … I don’t want to give away what it is until press gets ahold of it.” McCurdy added that the tattoo features “little words” next to Bieber’s eyebrow.
