A crowd releases lanterns into the air this weekend to celebrate the Yee Peng Festival, also known as the festival of lights, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The annual event is part of the festival of lights in northern Thailand to show respect to Buddha.

For the record: A horse is not technically a designated driver

State police in New York charged a woman with stealing $250 worth of baked goods from an order of nuns known for their cheesecake. The theft was last month at the Nuns of New Skete monastery in White Creek, on the Vermont border. The nuns sell their cheesecakes and pastries on the honor system at a monastery gift shop. Surveillance video showed a 48-year-old woman taking the goodies without leaving any cash. (AP)

An 81-year-old resident of Bretten, Germany, alerted police last week to what he thought was a World War II bomb in his garden. Officers rushed over — and found a big zucchini. Police said it “really did look very like a bomb” but was an 11-pound, 16-inch zucchini. Police believe someone threw it over a hedge and into the garden. Unexploded wartime bombs are unearthed frequently during construction work in Germany. (AP)

A woman riding a horse down a busy Florida highway was arrested and charged last week with driving drunk. Polk County Sheriff’s officials said someone called 911 about a woman who appeared confused and possibly in danger. When deputies arrived they found Donna Byrne, 53, riding her horse in the road. Officers said breath samples indicated that her blood-alcohol level was .161 — twice Florida’s legal limit of .08. (AP)

page three Activists revise their pitch for ‘healing’ work on the National Mall

CULTURE The activists had wanted to place a 45-foot-tall statue of a nude woman on prime land on the Mall. They said it would be a symbol of feminine strength and power, a sign that women should never feel ashamed in their bodies. But the National Park Service last month rejected a permit for such a large and heavy structure on land near the Washington Monument, scuttling the project. Now, activists have a new plan. They want to erect a 26-foot-tall scaffold covered on two sides by 26-foot-tall digitized portraits of a nude woman. The Park Service hasn’t finalized the permit for the structure,

but Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the agency, said it is in the final stages of issuing it. The structure would be part of a three-day “Catharsis on the Mall” festival, starting Friday, that has been dubbed the “Burning Man” of Washington. “It’s about making women feel safe. You can feel safe and be nude,” said Natalie White, a spokeswoman for the event. “It’s a healing image and it’s about making women feel safe in their environments.” White said that after the Park Service rejected the group’s initial permit application, women behind Catharsis decided they still wanted to promote a message of female empowerment. Twenty-seven women submitted nude photos of themselves to an artist. In each photo, the woman had one hand over her heart, the other on her stomach.

Nude art takes new form

Activists hope to display this 26-foot-tall image this weekend at a festival on the National Mall.

An artist then combined and manipulated the images to form a single image of a nude woman. The front and back of that digitized woman will be displayed on two sides of the scaffold, White said. The festival also will have a tent where women can take photos of themselves that will be projected and morphed onto the image of the woman on the scaffold. White said activists are making the best of the situation while still fighting to bring the original 45-foot statue to the Mall. They argue the Park Service’s rejection of its permit was an infringement on their First Amendment rights and say they are considering filing a lawsuit. “We will not be silenced just because the National Park Service wants to take away our statue,” White said. Candidates make final push VIRGINIA The candidates in Virginia’s high-stakes, closely watched race for governor are in a final sprint before Election Day. Republican Ed Gillespie and Democrat Ralph Northam crisscrossed Virginia on Saturday and Sunday trying to rally supporters while allied groups and political parties on both sides touted unprecedented get-outthe-vote efforts. Virginia is one of only two states electing a new governor this year, and the contest Tuesday is viewed by many as an early referendum on President Trump’s political popularity. Northam, a pediatric neurologist and the state’s lieutenant governor, spent Saturday in voter-rich Northern Virginia, where Democrats have run up huge leads in recent statewide elections. He attended rallies with union members, immigrant groups and others where he sought to use anti-Trump energy as a motivating factor. “Do you all remember how

National Democrats, still stinging from last year’s presidential race, are hoping a strong showing by Northam will help motivate the party ahead of the 2018 midterm elections. Some Republicans said they felt Trump’s victory has energized their party in a lasting way that will help Gillespie. “People realize they can have a voice and can make a difference in an election,” said John Ancellotti, a retired Coast Guard captain and federal agent who attended a Gillespie rally Sunday. Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon said Saturday that Gillespie’s tack to the right will help him “pull this out,” according to the pro-Trump website Breitbart News. Gillespie did not mention the president during Sunday rallies in Williamsburg and Virginia Beach, instead focusing his message on his plan to boost the state’s economy. He also told supporters that Democrats were “panicked” because the Republican ticket had the momentum in the campaign’s final days. “We no longer just have momentum — we have the lead,” Gillespie said. Baltimore police officers found Tony Anthony Mason Jr., 40, with gunshot wounds early Saturday morning. He died of his injuries at a hospital. The Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. said Mason, a sergeant, was a 17-year veteran of the force. Public information officer Sean Hickman referred all further inquiries to Baltimore police. local SEVERNA PARK, MD. A prank born of tradition went awry for the Severna Park High field hockey team, and the consequences will cost the secondranked Falcons their spot in the Maryland 4A state semifinals. Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent George Arlotto ruled Friday that Severna Park, the Maryland 4A East region champions, must forfeit its place in the state semifinals following the suspension of all 24 players and three coaches. Severna Park was set to face Churchill today.

Severna Park administrators investigated a string of incidents that occurred late Wednesday night and into early Thursday morning, according to a news release from the school district. Falcons players traditionally throw toilet paper on coach Ann Andrews’s house if they win the region championship, a lighthearted prank that Andrews said she looks forward to every season because it’s a sign of the team’s success. Severna Park is a perennial field hockey power. But Wednesday night, during a team sleepover, players hit

Although the prank may have gone too far, the coach said the players did not act with any malice. “They are amazing women,” she said. “They got out of hand and made some bad decisions. That doesn’t make them bad people. They’re upset they forfeited the game, but they’re more sad they let some people down.” JACOB BOGAGE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trump talks tough in Asia President addresses N. Korea, says he and Putin are likely to meet TOKYO President Trump donned a military-style bomber jacket shortly after arriving Sunday in Japan and projected confidence that the United States will confront threats in Asia, telling hundreds of U.S. troops that they will have his administration’s support “to fight, to overpower and to always, always, always win.” Trump’s tough talk in a speech to U.S. and Japanese military personnel at Yokota Air Base, shortly after Air Force One touched down, aimed to set a tone for his five-nation tour, during which the president said he is likely to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The president told reporters during his flight here that he wants “Putin’s help on North Korea” as the administration attempts to consolidate support for its strategy to pressure Pyongyang over its nuclear weapons program. “History has proven over and over that the road of the tyrant is a steady march towards poverty, suffering and servitude,” Trump told the troops, perhaps referring obliquely to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, whose name he did not mention. Noting that he has proposed a bigger military budget, Trump surveyed the troops in an air base hangar and declared: “We’ve got a lot of stuff coming; use it well.” On the plane, Trump told reporters that he plans to decide “very soon” whether to relabel North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. The North spent 10 years on that list before being removed in 2008 by the George W. Bush administration for meeting nuclear inspection requirements. Pyongyang later violated

But Trump also offered encouragement for North Korean citizens, calling them “great people.” “They’re industrious, they’re warm, much warmer than the world really knows and understands,” he told reporters on the plane. “They’re great people and I hope it all works out for everybody. And it would be a wonderful thing if it could work for those great people, and for everybody.” And he seemed unconcerned about the prospect that North Korea might use his trip to the region to demonstrate its military might by firing a missile. “We’ll soon find out,” he said. “Good luck!” After speaking at the air base, Trump spent the day with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, playing nine holes of golf, though a White House official said they did not keep score. At the golf course, Abe took pains to ensure Trump felt comfortable: He presented Trump with white

‘Bleak’ look at NK nukes A ground invasion of North Korea is the only way to locate and destroy, with complete certainty, all components of leader Kim Jong Un’s nuclear weapons program, according to a Pentagon official. First lady Melania Trump, who is accompanying her husband on the trip, will join the president for a morning meeting with Japanese Emperor Akihito and then take part in a separate slate of events. Trump confirmed that he expects to meet with Putin, probably on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Da Nang, Vietnam, later in the trip. The meeting would come as special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia has heated up. Last week, Mueller indicted three people in Trump’s orbit — two senior campaign aides and one lower-level, unpaid volunteer — as part of his ongoing investigation. Carnage in a tiny town Gunman opens fire during church service in Texas, leaving at least 26 people dead Leaks show Wilbur Ross hid ties to Russia

NICK WAGNER (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN VIA AP)

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, TEXAS A man opened fire inside a church in a small South Texas community Sunday, killing 26 people and wounding about 20 others in the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history, Gov. Greg Abbott said. Officials didn’t identify the attacker during a news conference Sunday night, but two other officials — one a U.S. official and one in law enforcement — who were briefed on the investigation identified him as Devin Kelley. They spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the investigation. The U.S. official said Kelley lived in a San Antonio suburb and doesn’t appear to be linked to an organized terrorist group. The official said investigators are looking at social media posts Kelley may have made in the days before Sunday’s attack, including one that appeared to show an AR-15 semiautomatic weapon. Authorities said a civilian with a gun confronted the attacker and chased him away. The gunman was later found dead in his vehicle. It was unclear if it was from a self-inflicted wound or an injury from the civilian. A Department of Public Safety official said at a Sunday night news conference that investigators weren’t ready to discuss a motive for the attack. He said the dead ranged in age from 5 to 72 years old. Twenty-three were found dead in the church, two were found outside and one died after being taken to a hospital. Federal law enforcement swarmed the small community 30 miles southeast of San Antonio after the attack to offer assistance, including ATF investigators and members of the FBI’s

evidence collection team. The wounded were taken to hospitals. Video on KSAT television showed first responders taking a stretcher from the church to a waiting AirLife helicopter. Eight victims were taken by medical helicopter to the Brooke Army Medical Center, the military hospital said. Megan Posey, a spokeswoman for Connally Memorial Medical Center, which is in Floresville and about 10 miles from the church, said “multiple” victims were being treated for gunshot wounds. She declined to give a specific number but said it was less than a dozen. Alena Berlanga, a Floresville resident who was monitoring the chaos on a police scanner and in Facebook community groups, said everyone knows everyone in the sparsely populated county. Sutherland Springs has only a few hundred residents. “This is horrific for our tiny

Pastor’s daughter killed Among those killed was the 14-yearold daughter of the church’s pastor, Frank Pomeroy, and his wife, Sherri. Sherri Pomeroy wrote in a text message to the Associated Press that she and her husband were out of town in two different states when the attack occurred. “We lost our 14 year old daughter today and many friends,” she wrote. “Neither of us have made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation. little tight-knit town,” Berlanga said. “Everybody’s going to be affected and everybody knows someone who’s affected.” Regina Rodriguez arrived at the church a couple of hours after the shooting and walked up to the police barricade. She hugged a person she was with. She had been at an amusement

park with her children when she heard of the shooting. She said her father, 51-year-old Richard Rodriguez, attends the church every Sunday, and she hadn’t been able to reach him. She said she feared the worst. President Trump tweeted from Japan, where he is on an Asian trip, that he was monitoring the situation. Gov. Abbott called the shooting an “evil act,” and promised “more details” soon from the state’s Department of Public Safety. The church is a white, woodframed building with a doubledoor at the entrance and a Texas flag on a pole out front. A morning worship service was scheduled at the church for 11 a.m. The first news reports of the shooting started around noon. The church has posted videos of its Sunday services on a YouTube channel, raising the possibility that the shooting was captured on video. JIM VERTUNO (AP)

NATIONAL SECURITY Newly leaked documents show that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, President Trump’s point man on trade and manufacturing policy, has a stake in a company that does business with a gas producer partly owned by the son-in-law of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a fact Ross failed to disclose when being confirmed for his position. According to records obtained by the International Consortium of Journalists (ICIJ), Ross is an investor in Navigator Holdings, a shipping giant that counts Russian gas and petrochemical producer Sibur among its major customers. Putin’s son-in-law Kirill Shamalov once owned more than 20 percent of the company, but now holds a smaller stake. Commerce Department spokesman James Rockas said Ross “never met” Shamalov and has supported the Trump administration’s sanctions against Russia, according to the report. He added that Ross has withdrawn from matters related to shipping vessels and has met the “highest ethical standards.” The details are likely to add to questions about ties between Russia and the Trump administration. It wasn’t clear how many partners Ross might have or what the profit-sharing deal might be. ICIJ reported that Ross and other investors own four Cayman Island entities that own 31.5 percent of Navigator, worth around $176 million. BERNARD CONDON (AP)

Former DNC chair hits Clinton campaign, but says nominee won fairly POLITICS Former Democratic National Committee interim chair Donna Brazile said Sunday that despite a joint fundraising agreement between the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s campaign, there was “no evidence” that the 2016 presidential primaries were rigged.

The comments came as Brazile details the fundraising agreement in her new book, “Hacks,” writing that it was “a cancer” that disadvantaged Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., because it gave Clinton’s campaign a measure of influence over some DNC operations in exchange for helping the party raise money. Still, asked Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” whether the primaries were rigged in favor of Clinton, Brazile said, “I found

4 million votes,” Tom Perez, who took over as DNC chair after last year’s election, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Nevertheless, he said, “We have to earn the trust of the voters, and during the process of the Democratic primary, we fell short of that, undeniably.” In her ABC interview, Brazile also explained her secret deliberations about whether to initiate a complicated DNC process to replace Clinton as the nominee after her near-fainting spell on Sept. 11, 2016. Brazile writes in her book that she had settled on Vice President Joe Biden as the best replacement and had serious doubts during that period about the direction of Clinton’s campaign but did not initiate

the process. As party chair, she did not have the power to unilaterally replace the nominee. “I was under tremendous pressure after Secretary Clinton fainted to have a ‘Plan B,’ ” Brazile said on ABC. “I didn’t want a Plan B. … I supported Hillary, and I wanted her to win. But we were under pressure.” Brazile’s book is a savage memoir of her experiences with Clinton’s campaign, which she describes as mismanaged and lacking in passion. On Saturday night, after The Washington Post reported on some of Brazile’s allegations, more than 100 Clinton staffers signed a letter disputing the former party chair’s account. The fight between Spain and Catalonia’s separatists reached a Belgian judge Sunday after the region’s deposed leader and four former ministers surrendered in Brussels to face possible extradition to Madrid for allegedly plotting a rebellion. Hours after ex-Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont and the others turned themselves in, Puigdemont’s party put him forward as its leader for an upcoming regional election called by the Spanish government. A Belgian judge has until today to decide whether to jail them or let them stay free in Belgium while the extradition process runs its course. (AP)

The scandal surrounding Britain’s political class deepened Sunday with more allegations of sexual harassment. First Secretary of State Damian Green, a senior Cabinet figure who is in effect Prime Minister Theresa May’s deputy, denied a report that police had found “extreme” pornography on his computer during a probe nine years ago for alleged inappropriate advances on a woman. In addition to Green and ex-Defense Secretary Michael Fallon, who stepped down last week after reports of lewd behavior, a rising number of legislators from the Conservative and Labour parties face similar claims. Saudi prince orders high-profile arrests Dozens of VIPs are held in what some see as an anti-corruption sweep

FAYEZ NURELDINE (AFP/GETTY IMAAGE)

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA Saudi Arabia’s heir to the throne is overseeing an unprecedented wave of arrests of dozens of the country’s most powerful princes, military officers, businessmen and government ministers — some of them potential rivals or critics of the crown prince, whose purported anti-corruption sweep sent shock across the kingdom Sunday as he further consolidated power by eliminating rivals or critics in the event his father, King Salman, abdicates the throne. Among those taken into custody overnight Saturday were billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, one of the world’s richest men with extensive holdings in Western companies, as well as two of the late King Abdullah’s sons. The arrest of senior princes upends a tradition among the ruling Al Saud family to keep their disagreements private in an effort to show strength and unity in the face of Saudi Arabia’s many tribes and factions. It also sends a message that the 32-year-old crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, has the full backing of King Salman, to carry out sweeping anti-corruption

Mohammed bin Salman was recently appointed head of a new anti-corruption committee.

reforms targeting senior royals and their business associates, who have long been seen as operating beyond the law. Reports suggested those detained were being held at the Ritz Carlton in Riyadh, which only days earlier hosted a major investment conference that the crown prince attended with global business titans. A Saudi official told The Associated Press that other five-star hotels across the capital were also being used to hold some of those arrested. A Saudi government official with close ties to security forces said 11 princes and 38 others were being questioned. The surprise arrests were hailed by pro-government media

outlets as the clearest sign yet that Prince Mohammed is keeping his promise to reform the country as it moves to shift its economy from dependence on oil and liberalize some aspects of the ultraconservative society. The kingdom’s top council of clerics issued a statement saying it is an Islamic duty to fight corruption — essentially giving religious backing to the arrests. The Saudi government said the arrests are part of a wider effort to increase transparency and accountability — key reforms needed to attract greater international investments and appease a public that has for decades complained of rampant corruption.

Truck bomb kills scores fleeing fighting against IS

Republicans are poised to begin debating details of their tax plan this week, but House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., signaled Sunday that party leaders are still mulling whether to use the proposal to end a central element of the Affordable Care Act. Ryan signaled that a repeal of the health law’s individual mandate is still up for discussion. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A spokesman for U.S.-backed local forces in Syria said more than a hundred people have been killed in a truck bomb blast in eastern Syria. Mustafa Bali of the Syrian Democratic Forces said the victims were refugees from the war against the Islamic State group in the region. The Redskins’ Kirk Cousins, right, celebrates Rob Kelley’s go-ahead touchdown. It came one play after Cousins found Josh Doctson for a 38-yard completion.

Last-minute thrill 17

14

IN THE ANNALS OF IMPROBABLE VICTORIES, Washington’s upset in Seattle warrants special status.

Fueled by a fierce defensive effort and abetted by a penalty-prone opponent, the injury-depleted Redskins outplayed and out-toughed the Seahawks for a 17-14 victory Sunday that snapped a

two-game losing streak and silenced a raucous crowd at CenturyLink Field. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (297 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs) shook off an uncharacteristically sloppy three quarters to put Seattle ahead with 1:34 remaining. But QB Kirk Cousins and Josh Doctson took major steps toward silencing their critics on a successful last-minute drive. LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST) BEST REDEMPTION: Trailing 14-10 with 1:34 to play, the Redskins mounted a four-play touchdown drive that might have saved their season. After an incomplete pass on first down, Kirk Cousins hooked up with Brian Quick for a 31-yard completion. On the next play, Josh Doctson made an incredible diving catch for 38 yards at the Seattle 1. Doctson’s heroics set up a Rob Kelley touchdown run on the next play, which gave Washington an improbable lead with 59 seconds left. BEST DRAMA: The Redskins almost left the Seahawks too much time. Seattle drove to the Washington 38-yard line with 15 seconds left, but Russell Wilson was sacked for an 8-yard loss, making a field goal impossible and leaving only four seconds. A Hail Mary by Wilson bounced off a pair of hands in the

back of the end zone before it fell harmlessly incomplete. WORST INEVITABILITY: Seattle’s offense, which scored 41 points in a home win last week and looked completely out of sorts for three

quarters Sunday, finally got into the end zone early in the fourth quarter. Wilson’s 10-yard pass to Luke Willson capped a six-play, 66-yard drive that pulled Seattle to within 10-8. Later, a penalty for a block in the back helped Seattle force a punt, and Wilson

BEST TWO-POINT TRY: When the Seahawks cut the lead to 10-8, they went for two points and the tie. But D.J. Swearinger intercepted Wilson at the goal line, returned the ball past midfield and lateraled to Josh Norman, who lateraled it back before Swearinger was tackled. BEST DRIVE: After Blair Walsh attempted the second of his three missed field goals, Cousins led a 13-play drive that included a thirddown catch by Terrelle Pryor Sr. Kelley capped it with a 1-yard TD run to give the Redskins a 7-2 lead. THE TAKEAWAY

Flukes help Redskins steal a win Richard Sherman looked distraught. On the first play of the second quarter, Seattle’s Pro Bowl cornerback sat on the turf with his legs splayed, shaking his head and looking for the ball after dropping a sure interception. Considering the injuryravaged state of the Redskins’ offensive line, the close nature of the game Sunday was remarkable. Sherman dropped a pick. Blair Walsh, above, missed three field goals. The Seahawks outgained the Redskins 437 yards to 244 but scored just 14 points. Dwight Freeney’s fumble recovery for a touchdown was reversed. Washington did what it couldn’t a month ago in Kansas City: steal a victory on the road from a top contender. At 4-4, the Redskins are back in the wild-card race. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Marcus Mariota threw for 218 yards and two TDs at home to lead the Titans to their third straight win. Safety Kevin Byard intercepted two passes, giving the second-year pro five picks over his past two games, and Tenessee (5-3) sacked Joe Flacco twice. Baltimore (4-5) has lost three of four going into its bye. Flacco threw two TD passes in the final 8:56, but Justin Tucker’s onside kick didn’t travel 10 yards and was recovered by the Titans. (AP)

Drew Brees completed 22 of 27 passes (81.2 percent) for 263 yards and two TDs as the Saints pushed their winning streak to six. Alvin Kamara scored on a 33-yard catch and a 6-yard run for New Orleans (6-2). Jaydon Mickens returned a punt 63 yards for a TD to help the Jaguars win their first home game since last December. Blake Bortles threw for 259 yards and a touchdown in another efficient performance, and Marqise Lee had his first TD reception of the season for Jacksonville (5-3). Cincinnati (3-5) converted just one of eight third downs. Bengals receiver A.J. Green and Jaguars corner Jaylen Ramsey were ejected for fighting. (AP)

Carolina (6-3) ran for 201 yards at home, including a career-high 66 yards and a TD by rookie Christian McCaffrey. Devin Funchess had five catches for 86 yards in his first game as Carolina’s No. 1 receiver after the team traded Kelvin Benjamin to Buffalo. Matt Ryan threw for 313 yards, two TDs and a pick for Atlanta (4-4). (AP)

The Texans struggled at home without rookie QB Deshaun Watson, who tore his ACL in practice last week, and the Colts (3-6) snapped a three-game skid with Jacoby Brissett (308 yards, 2 TDs) continuing to fill in for Andrew Luck. Tom Savage threw for 219 yards with a TD to DeAndre Hopkins and a lost fumble for the Texans (3-5). Lamarr Houston scored for Houston on a 34-yard fumble return after Eddie Pleasant sacked Brissett. Two-goal night shows third-line winger isn’t just a grinder anymore NHL Nearly four years to the day of Tom Wilson’s first NHL goal, he skated onto the ice in Boston as Saturday’s “first star,” an honor he earned after he scored two goals in a regular-season game for the first time in his career. In the Capitals’ 3-2 victory over the Bruins, Wilson helped Washington notch a second straight win, something the

team hadn’t done in a month. The Capitals will go for three straight tonight at home against the Coyotes (7, NBCSWA). While Wilson, 23, has shown flashes like Saturday night’s outburst, the next step for him is to score more consistently, especially as Washington’s forward depth has thinned because of offseason turnover and injuries. Wilson scoring his first two goals of the season in one game continued an impressive stretch for a third line that’s been on the ice for five even-strength goals in the past two contests.

MICHAEL DWYER (AP)

Caps count on Wilson to score more

Tom Wilson entered a 3-2 win over the Bruins without a goal this season and left Boston with two.

Former NFL defensive end Greg Hardy wins first MMA fight in 32 seconds

Since being drafted 16th overall in 2012, Wilson has never scored more than seven goals in a season, often limited to a fourthline, grinding defensive role or positioned to be an enforcer. But Wilson is set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season, so this could be a revealing year for his development. Though Washington’s management and coaches have often said they see offensive upside in the physical forward, this is the year the team is counting on him to show it. These female-driven dramas are all about survival, not triumph

TELEVISION The air is electric with courageous women striking back at the awful acts of powerful men. Disgrace is being dragged out into the harsh light of day and, in very short order, we’ve seen showbizzy names inducted into a newly built Hall of Shame. And there’s more to come, no doubt. Grace Marks, the antiheroic murderess at the center of Netflix’s quietly compelling six-episode miniseries “Alias Grace,” out now, could have benefited from the current enlightenment on workplace harassment. Unfortunately, Grace (played by Sarah Gadon) is stuck in an Ontario prison in the late 1850s. But the men in Grace’s life have all been predatory beasts in one way or another. As an immigrant whose abusive father sends her off to find employment as a servant, Grace soon learns about harsh class dynamics and womanly despair. When she ends up working under the head housekeeper (Anna Paquin) for a wealthy widower (Paul Gross), Grace finds out the housekeeper is the widower’s mistress and therefore feels entitled to treat the help like dirt.

Soon enough, Grace is conspiring with a stableman (Kerr Logan) to murder them both. “Alias Grace” is another adaptation of a Margaret Atwood novel (along with Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”), and, as it happens, the series is produced and written by Sarah Polley, one of many women who stepped forward to recall their bad encounters with film mogul Harvey Weinstein. It’s hard not to think about that while noticing the methodical way that “Alias Grace” takes its story beyond the “did she or didn’t she?” ambiguity of the double murders and instead becomes a thoughtful exploration of gender as a stacked deck. “Alias Grace” dares to suggest that Grace is the product of a culture that uses and disregards women — especially poor, working-class women. In contrast, the second season of Starz’s psychosexual anthology drama “The Girlfriend Experience” (which debuted Sunday) approaches gender and abuse from a whole other perspective, with disturbing yet obsessive results. Produced by Steven Soderbergh and based on his 2009 film, “The Girlfriend Experience” explores the world of highly paid escorts who offer their clients the illusion of attentive companionship. This season’s 14 episodes is divided into two stories. The first is a political tragedy set

“The Girlfriend Experience”

They’re in it together “Alias Grace” actress Sarah Gadon feels empowered by working on a show led by a team of impressive women, including writer-producer Sarah Polley and director Mary Harron. “When I watch the show, it’s a real exploration on female subjectivity that gets me really excited,” she says. “That’s the power of women making images, opening up this discourse and this dialogue about how women are seen.” (AP)

in D.C., where an escort named Anna Gardner (Louisa Krause) approaches a steely operative at a conservative super PAC, Erica Myles (Anna Friel), with video evidence of a male rival’s abusive treatment of prostitutes. Asked why she’s offering the video for sale, Anna replies: “Because he’s

Netflix fires Kevin Spacey from “House of Cards” and cuts future ties following sexual abuse allegations

a misogynist and a … pig. He gets what he deserves.” Eventually, Anna enters an intense and ultimately abusive relationship with Erica, while maintaining her usual work with other clients. The second story shifts gears almost too wildly, exchanging the show’s studied monochromes for a “Breaking Bad”-like desert palette, where Carmen Ejogo plays a former escort in New Mexico who has turned federal witness against her criminal sugar-daddy. Like “Alias Grace,” “The Girlfriend Experience” is a reminder that a feminist story need not be a positive or even noble one. The typical requirements for triumph and comeuppance don’t always apply; the more useful themes here are about survival and perseverance. “Nevertheless she persisted,” to put it in 2017 terms.

THE CW

Welcome to “Riverdale,” where everything is dark and full of teen angst.

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

Graphic content: This is not your old comic’s ‘Riverdale’ “Riverdale” is killing it in the ratings this fall, and also killing it quite literally. There’s a serial killer called the Black Hood who’s terrorizing the town where Archie Andrews of comic book fame lives, and kids from the nice North Side (Archie’s neighborhood) and scruffy South Side are eager to brawl. So Archie buys a gun to protect himself. Clearly, this is not the Archie you might remember from the comics of your misspent youth — that bland guy with carrot-colored hair and a tictac-toe grid at the temples who dithered about whether to date rich Veronica or not-so-rich

Betty and whose best friend was Jughead, with a famous ability to consume mass quantities of hamburgers. The CW series (8 p.m. Wednesdays) is definitely a different spin. Not only is there murder and mayhem, but the elderly teacher Miss Grundy is now a hot young music teacher who hooked up with Archie (in what would be classified as statutory rape due to his age of about 15) and then was strangled to death by the Black Hood, who used the very cello bowstring that Archie gave her. This fall’s premiere drew 2.3 million viewers (twice as many as viewed the Season 1 finale). The first season’s addition to Netflix is credited for drawing in a bevy of youthful viewers.

$121M

The show itself is an entertaining mashup. It wittily references its comic book ancestor (Betty rocks the world’s most iconic ponytail and last season Jughead finally ate a hamburger). It’s got dark and shadowy atmospherics a la “Twin Peaks” (seriously, does anyone in Riverdale own a lightbulb?). And there’s plenty of suspense as the teens track down the killer with “Homeland”-like intensity. Then there’s the dating game. Right now, Archie is with Veronica and her omnipresent pearl necklace, and Betty and Jughead are a thing — although he’s crushing on classmate Toni Topaz. So the show is a bit of a soap opera. Yet no one can say “Riverdale” is not highbrow. By which I mean that Archie, portrayed by K.J. Apa, has the most impressive eyebrows in televisiondom. As Apa put it on Twitter: “My eyebrows are the verandas of my face.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse.

BOX OFFICE HAUL

The box office take of Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” in its opening weekend. The robust debut cements the breakthrough of director Taika Waititi, who shepherded the film to Marvel’s best reviews since 2008’s “Iron Man.” The weekend’s other nationwide release, “A Bad Mom’s Christmas,” took second place with $17 million. (AP) CBS All Access reportedly rebooting “The Twilight Zone” with “Get Out” writer-director Jordan Peele

“Vin Scully is an old white man. The odds were at least 50/50 that he felt this way.” @BASEBALL_JENN, tweeting about longtime Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully

saying that he will “never watch another NFL game” because of the national anthem protests. Scully, 90, was speaking Saturday in Pasadena, Calif., when he said that he is “so disappointed” in the NFL protests. Scully said that because of his respect for the military, he will no longer watch the NFL. That response was met with cheers from the audience. “Add Vin Scully to the list of people who are choosing [of their own] volition to ignore the fact that the #NFL isn’t protesting the military,” @NFL_DovKleiman tweeted.

People on social media have been discussing the perennial question of whether an artist’s body of work can be separated from his or her morals. “Their art is who they are and their abuse is even more so,” @queennoreeen tweeted.

“Did Larry David really just use his platform on SNL to turn a comment about the Weinstein scandal into a holocaust joke? Yes. Yes he did.” @HERMAJESTYSOPHA, reacting

to Larry David’s “Saturday Night Live” monologue in which he did a bit about how there are “no good opening lines in a concentration camp.” David, who is Jewish, was criticized for making the joke.

“Heads up, the new all glass iPhone X breaks if you drop it. Also, regular glass breaks if you drop it.” @JONACUFF, tweeting about reports on social media from people who say they already have dropped and cracked their iPhone X. CNET dropped an iPhone X to test its performance and the phone cracked on the first drop. “Here’s an idea, treat it like it costs $1,000,” @NoFunJim tweeted.

Sean “Diddy” Combs revealed in a Twitter video Saturday — his 48th birthday — that he is changing his name once more. “I’ve been praying on this. … I’m just not who I [was] before,” he said. ”I’m something different. So my new name is Love, aka Brother Love. I will not be answering to Puffy, Diddy, Puffy Daddy or any of my other monikers, but Love or Brother Love, OK.” (EXPRESS)
