Maine resident remembers to vote, forgets false teeth
A Vermont trick-or-treater may have picked up more than candy on Halloween. A woman who lives in South Burlington called police to report that she accidentally dropped her yellow gold and diamond eternity wedding band into a trick-or-treater’s bag. She’s checking social media for reports of a found ring, and police are asking parents to check their children’s candy bags if they visited the woman’s neighborhood. (AP)
An 800-pound heifer made a big splash when it fell into a covered swimming pool last week at a house in Newton, N.C. Animal control officers were summoned and found the bovine staring from the pool. Homeowner Burt Thornburg said he thought he had seen something fall into the pool, so he ripped off the cover and found the cow, which apparently got lost while grazing. Officers lassoed the horns and pulled the cow to safety. (AP)
A city clerk in Portland, Maine, was looking for the owner of a set of dentures left behind in a polling booth last week. An election clerk found the teeth in an auditorium that serves as a polling place in Portland. The lost dentures were stowed in a plastic bag in the city clerk’s office in City Hall, a few steps from the polling place. Residents voted on City Council races, a school rebuilding project and other issues. (AP)

31 marathons over 31 days REGION Marine Corps veteran Rob Jones wanted to change the narrative of the broken-down, wounded veteran struggling to transition to civilian life. So for the past 31 days, he kept running. Jones, who had both legs amputated after being wounded by a land mine while serving in Afghanistan, ran the distance of 31 marathons over 31 days in 31 different cities. On Saturday afternoon, with his back aching and legs sore, the 32-year-old Vienna resident finished his month of marathons near the steps leading up to the Lincoln Memorial on a frigid Veterans Day. The crowd of several dozen supporters showered him with cheers as he crossed the tape. Jones then kissed his wife, Pam, smiled and took a few moments to let the accomplishment soak in. All month, people followed Jones wherever he went, like Tom Hanks in the film “Forrest Gump.” He started his journey in London, where Pam is originally

There were always runners waiting for him, regardless of the city or weather. On Saturday, the temperature dipped below freezing for most the day, but there were never fewer than 20 runners who joined Jones on the mile-plus loops surrounding the Reflecting Pool. “The support has been incredible,” said Jones, who was

“I decided I would create this story of a veteran that was wounded and thrived from it. I think I accomplished that mission.” ROB JONES, a Marine Corps veteran who finished the equivalent of 31 marathons in 31 days on Saturday
honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 2011. “It’s such a great compliment to have all these people come out and hear my story and deem it worthy of their time on the weekend, on a holiday, and come out and support me.” Both of Jones’ legs were amputated after he was wounded in Afghanistan in 2010. He has since become a Paralympic bronze medalist in rowing, biked 5,180 miles across the country and devoted his life to raising money for veterans’ charities. He estimates that his latest challenge has raised between $125,000 and $130,000. His goal is to eventually raise $1 million. But the trip also had painful lows. On Tuesday, Jones slipped on a Nashville bridge and badly injured his back. Jones said that the back injury will force him to take a break from running for a little bit. “I hate seeing him in pain, but I also know that if this was easy, he would be frustrated because he wants it to be hard,” his wife said. “He wants to be an example of making something hard so that you can challenge yourself to be a better person.” KELYN SOONG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Park service wants to limit sports on Mall The National Park Service said Thursday that it wants to permanently close the grounds of the Washington Monument to recreational activities and increase reservation fees for use of its 28 athletic fields on the Mall and in Rock Creek Park. The monument grounds were closed earlier this year for turf restoration, and the park service is proposing for that closure to continue after the project is finished, a spokesman said. The rate for reserving the other fields would increase to $70 per twohour block. (TWP)

LaHood: Metro needs dedicated funding TRANSPORTATION The long-awaited report on Metro by former U.S. transportation secretary Ray LaHood urges the region’s three jurisdictions and the federal government to provide the agency with permanent, dedicated funding, but it sidesteps the politically charged question of what kind of tax or other mechanism should be adopted for that purpose. The study also calls for replacing Metro’s entire, 16-member board with a five-member “reform board” for three years. LaHood has aired the proposal previously, but the report says explicitly a new board is needed to make “tough decisions” such as cutting pension benefits and reducing bus service. The 24-page report, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post in advance of its release later this month, was commissioned in March by

Report by ex-secretary of transportation offers no source of new funds
Former transportation secretary Ray LaHood calls for replacing Metro’s 16-member board.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe. The study provides a foundation for the next phase of an intense debate in the region over how to restructure Metro’s governance and meet its funding needs. The study is the most comprehensive independent analysis of Metro’s structure and finances in years. It finds that Metro suffers financial pressures partly because it provides about
20 percent more service per rider than other large transit agencies. It urges raising bus fares from a base level of $2 to $2.10, which is closer to the average of $2.16 among peer agencies. It also calls for a major overhaul of bus routes to “offer service that matches actual demand.” The combined savings could be $38 million a year. Comparable reductions in rail service could be necessary as well, the study says, if rail ridership fails to rebound as Metro hopes. The report endorses the leadership of Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld, who is about to complete his second year in the position. “Wiedefeld has not shied away from taking on the problems that have plagued [Metro] for years,” it says. It praises him for closing lines temporarily to ensure safety, for terminating low-performing employees and for reducing service to manage costs. “He is the right person for the job at hand,” LaHood says in the report. Charlottesville swayed voters, advocates find VIRGINIA Unease over violent white nationalist rallies in Charlottesville this summer and President Trump’s response loomed in the minds of many Virginia voters during Tuesday’s elections in which Democrats made significant gains, according to progressive advocacy groups and voter interviews. The governor’s race was one of Virginia’s most racially charged in recent memory, and voters were peppered with ads that referenced the August violence. A political organization that mounted a months-long black voter outreach campaign surveyed minority voters, and most said they saw their vote as a way to push back against white supremacy. And in Charlottesville itself, which saw an increased voter turnout, one of the most vocal critics of the local government’s

response to the rallies won a City Council seat. “I think folks really decided that it was important to send a message that the divisiveness is not something that Virginia stands for, and we really want to be an inclusive and welcoming state,” said Tram Nguyen, co-executive director of New
Virginia Majority, a progressive group that worked on voter outreach in communities of color. However, John Whitbeck, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, said Democrats “had a message that we were a bunch of racists, and they just hammered it and hammered it and hammered it.” It will take months of talking with voters and elected officials to have a better understanding of what happened, he said. The Rev. Seth Wispelwey, who was among the clergy facing down the white nationalists during the Aug. 12 protests, said people “had their consciences scandalized by this summer in Virginia.” He noted that in the House, a slew of conservative white men were replaced by “candidates who represent precisely who the white supremacists seek to dehumanize.” SARAH RANKIN (AP)

7.2 magnitude quake jolts Iran-Iraq border At least 67 are dead, 500 injured in tremor felt across Middle East MIDDLE EAST A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the region along the border between Iran and Iraq on Sunday, killing at least 61 people and injuring 300 in Iran, an Iranian official said. Iranian state TV said Iraqi officials had reported at least six deaths inside Iraq, along with more than 50 people injured in Sulaymaniyah province and about 150 in Khanaquin city. No reports were immediately available from Iraq’s government. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at
9:18 p.m. local time, was centered 19 miles outside the eastern Iraqi city of Halabja, southeast of Sulaymaniyah, a city in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq. The Islamic Republic of Iran News Network quoted the head of the country’s emergency medical services, Pirhossein Koulivand, as saying at least 61 had been killed and 300 injured on Iran’s side of the border. Koulivand earlier told a local television station that the earthquake knocked out electricity in Iran’s western cities of Mehran and Ilam. He also said 35 rescue teams were providing assistance. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in a phone call with the Interior Ministry, emphasized

the need for maximum effort from officials. Social media was abuzz Sunday night with posts of people evacuating their homes, particularly in Iran’s Kermanshah and Ghasr-e Shirin, and in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq. Some posts appeared to show extensive damage to some homes and buildings. The semi-official Iranian ILNA news agency said at least 14 provinces in Iran had been affected by the earthquake. Officials said schools in Kermanshah and Ilam provinces would be closed Monday because of the tremor. The tremor was felt as far as Kuwait, Israel, Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, news agencies in those countries reported. (AP/EXPRESS)

nation+world POLITICS Alabama Republican Roy Moore is trying to raise money for his U.S. Senate race on allegations he had a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl when he was in his early 30s. Moore wrote in his fundraising pitch that “the vicious and sleazy attacks against me are growing more vicious by the minute.” He told supporters that he’s counting on them to stand with him by “chipping in a donation,” Moore will face Democrat Doug Jones in a special election Dec. 12. The Washington Post reported last week that the 70 -yearold Moore had relationships
with teenage girls, including a 14-year-old, while he was in his early 30s. Moore has vehemently denied the allegations. On Sunday, Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., urged Moore to drop out of the race, adding to the party’s growing disavowal of the controversial judge in a pivotal election. Toomey said Moore’s explanations have been inadequate so far and that Republicans should consider current Sen. Luther Strange as a write-in candidate to run against Moore. “You know, this is a terrible situation, nearly 40-year-old allegation, we’ll probably never know for sure exactly what happened,”
Several Republican senators have urged Roy Moore to drop out of the U.S. Senate race in Alabama.
Toomey said. “But from my point of view, I think the accusations have more credibility than the denial. I think it would be best

Gunman’s anger ran deep Former wife says Kelley threatened to kill her; a colleague feared him NEW BRAUNFELS, TEXAS The former wife of the man responsible for killing 26 people in a Texas church last Sunday before killing himself said he had threatened to kill her, once putting a gun to her head and asking her whether she wanted to die. The comments, the first public statements by gunman Devin Kelley’s first wife, Tessa Brennaman, add to the growing portrait of Kelley as an unstable young man whose life was marked by anger and the potential for violence. In an interview with “Inside Edition” published in part on
the CBS website, Brennaman, 25, described her ex-husband as someone with “a lot of demons or hatred inside of him” and said he once threatened her for getting a speeding ticket. “He had a gun in his holster right here and he took that gun out and he put it to my temple and he said, ‘Do you want to die, do you want to die?’ ” she said. Kelley, 26, was convicted of domestic abuse of Brennaman and her son while Kelley was in the Air Force in 2012. Brennaman and Kelley divorced after the incident, for which he was court-martialed and sentenced to a year of confinement. The domestic violence charges should have prevented him from being able to buy the guns he
used in the shooting, the Air Force said, but the information wasn’t relayed to federal authorities. Kelley Other information about Kelley’s turbulent life has emerged in recent days. Records released by the New Braunfels Independent School District show that Kelley racked up a lengthy disciplinary record in high school, including seven suspensions for falsifying records, insubordination, profanity and a drug-related offense. Kelley joined the Air Force after high school, but his problems grew. Jessika Edwards, a former Air Force staff sergeant who worked
with him at a base in New Mexico, told CNN that he was constantly getting into trouble. She said Kelley’s behavior caused her to worry about his potential for violence. Edwards also said he displayed a fascination with mass murders. “He would make jokes about wanting to kill somebody,” she said. She said Kelley told her he bought dogs from Craigslist so he could practice shooting them. And he expressed envy for Dylann Roof, who killed nine people at a South Carolina church in 2015. “He would say he wished he had the nerve to do it, but all he would be able to do is kill animals,” Edwards told CNN. MIDDLE EAST Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, above, said Sunday he will return to his country “within days” amid a political crisis that erupted after his sudden resignation on Nov. 4 in Saudi Arabia. In a live interview shown on Future TV, Hariri said he had resigned to protect Lebanon from imminent danger, although he didn’t specify who was threatening the country. He said he will return to submit his resignation and seek a settlement with his rivals in the coalition government, the militant group Hezbollah. But Hariri said withdrawing his resignation would be conditional on the Iranian-backed Hezbollah committing to remaining neutral on regional conflicts. Hariri looked tired and sad in the interview from Saudi Arabia. He held back tears as he said that he resigned to cause a “positive shock” and draw attention to the danger of siding with Iran in regional conflicts. Iran is Saudi Arabia’s arch foe. Seeking to show he was not being detained by the Saudis, Hariri said: “I am free.” He said his resignation was his own decision, dismissing reports he was forced into it. He also said he is looking into security arrangements before returning to Lebanon. Many have suspected Hariri was placed under house arrest as part of a Saudi plan to unravel the coalition government he formed last year with Hezbollah. SARAH EL DEEB (AP)

Russia at center of Asia trip POLITICS President Trump’s lengthy Asia trip wound down as it began, with a visit meant to be centered on trade and North Korea overshadowed by questions about Russia. Trump was in the Philippines, the final stop of his trip, on Monday, poised to hold formal talks with President Rodrigo Duterte, who has overseen a bloody drug war that has featured extrajudicial killings and fears of vigilante justice. But Trump remains dogged by things he has said, and has not said, about Russia. Trump tried to have it both ways Sunday on the issue of Russian interference in last year’s presidential race, saying he believes both the U.S. intelligence agencies when they say Russia meddled and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s sincerity in claiming that his country did not. “I believe that he feels that he and Russia did not meddle in the election,” Trump said of Putin at a news conference in Hanoi with Vietnam’s president. “As to whether I believe it, I’m with our agencies. As currently led by fine people, I believe very much in our intelligence agencies.” U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia meddled in the 2016 election to help Trump defeat Hillary Clinton. Ex-U.S. intel official says Putin is playing Trump by appealing to his ego
Trump campaign aides so far has led to indictments against Trump’s former campaign chairman and another top aide for crimes unrelated to the campaign, and a guilty plea from a Trump foreign policy adviser. On Saturday, Trump lashed out at former heads of the U.S. intelligence agencies, claiming there are plenty of reasons to be suspicious of their findings and dismissing them as “political hacks.” Two top former U.S. intelligence officials said Sunday that Trump is being “played” by Putin. “By not confronting the issue directly and not acknowledging to Putin that we know you’re responsible for this, I think he’s giving Putin a pass,” former CIA
Director John Brennan said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I think it demonstrates to Mr. Putin that Donald Trump can be played by foreign leaders who are going to appeal to his ego and try to play upon his insecurities, which is very, very worrisome from a national security standpoint.” Appearing on the same program, former director of national intelligence James Clapper said he agrees with that assessment. “He seems very susceptible to rolling out the red carpet and honor guards and all the trappings and pomp and circumstance that come with the office, and I think that appeals to him, and I think it plays to his insecurities,” Clapper said. Trump told reporters Saturday
that Putin had again vehemently denied the allegations. The two spoke during an economic conference in Danang, Vietnam. Trump danced around questions about whether he believed Putin but stressed Putin’s denials. “Every time he sees me, he says: ‘I didn’t do that.’ And I believe — I really believe — that when he tells me that, he means it,” Trump said. In Hanoi on Sunday, Trump pointed to sanctions the U.S. has imposed on Russia as punishment for election meddling. “They were sanctioned at a very high level, and that took place very recently,” he said. “It’s now time to get back to healing a world that is shattered and broken.” (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

HEALTH Women are less likely than men to get CPR from a bystander and more likely to die, a new study suggests, and researchers think reluctance to touch a woman’s chest might be one reason. Only 39 percent of women suffering cardiac arrest in a public place were given CPR versus 45 percent of men, and men were 23 percent more likely to survive, the study found. It involved nearly 20,000 cases around the country and is the first to examine gender differences in receiving heart help from the public versus professional responders. “It can be kind of daunting thinking about pushing hard and fast on the center of a woman’s chest,” and some people may fear they are hurting her, said Audrey Blewer, a University of Pennsylvania researcher who led the study. Rescuers also may worry about moving a woman’s clothing to get better access, or touching breasts to do CPR, but doing it properly “shouldn’t entail that,” said another study leader, Penn’s Dr. Benjamin Abella. “You put your hands on the sternum, which is the middle of the chest. In theory, you’re touching in between the breasts.” More than 350,000 Americans each year suffer a cardiac arrest in settings other than a hospital. About 90 percent of them die, but CPR can double or triple survival odds. MARILYNN MARCHIONE (AP)

WITH THE VIKINGS’ TOP-FOUR DEFENSE AWAITING, the Redskins’ starting offensive line was in full
force Sunday for the first time in three weeks, sloughing off shoulder, knee and ankle injuries in hopes of pulling off a second consecutive upset. But with the defense giving up big play after big
play, the offensive line’s gritty effort was in vain. A loss at FedEx Field dropped Washington to 4-5 ahead of a visit to the NFC South leading Saints (7-2) next Sunday. After letting an early lead turn into an 18-point deficit, the Redskins clawed back. Kirk Cousins threw for 327 yards and ran for two TDs but couldn’t conjure the late-game heroics that lifted his team in Seattle. LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST) WORST REUNION: Kai Forbath drilled a 53-yard field goal, which tied his season long, with 7:45 left to give the Vikings a 38-27 lead. Forbath was cut by the Redskins after Week 1 in 2015 because he didn’t have the leg strength to put the ball through the end zone on kickoffs. He never made a kick longer than 50 yards in over three years with Washington.

WORST DEFENSE: Keenum carved up the Redskins in the first half, and Adam Thielen was his favorite target. Thielen had three catches for 62 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown grab, on a 71-yard drive that gave Minnesota a 21-17 lead less

WORST THROW: After Thielen’s score, Cousins overthrew Jamison Crowder on the first play of Washington’s possession. Mackensie Alexander intercepted it deep in Redskins territory. Three plays later, Keenum found tight end David Morgan wide open in the end zone for his first career touchdown to push the lead to 28-17 at the break. BEST CATCH: Promoted from the practice squad Saturday, Maurice Harris capped Washington’s opening drive with a 36-yard, one-handed TD grab that was ruled incomplete but then reversed. THE TAKEAWAY
Keenum wins QB duel with Cousins Case Keenum, who came to Minnesota this offseason as a backup on his third NFL team, needed just three quarters to outplay Kirk Cousins on Sunday. Washington’s QB stands to make $22 million more than Keenum this season, but he neither made the individual plays nor received the assistance that his counterpart did in the Redskins’ loss. Two fourth-quarter picks by D.J. Swearinger were the only blemishes for Keenum, who was 21of-29 for 304 yards and threw all of his careerhigh four touchdown passes in the first 33 minutes. At one point, he pump-faked Josh Norman away from Adam Thielen in the end zone. Cousins threw a pick, sailed a potential TD pass past Josh Doctson and saw two would-be scoring grabs dislodged from his receivers. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Tennessee fired coach Butch Jones on Sunday with two games left in the regular season. The Volunteers (4-6) were ranked 25th in the AP preseason poll but are winless in the SEC. “We are not where we need to be competitively,” athletic director John Currie said Sunday. Currie said that defensive line coach Brady Hoke will serve as interim coach. Tennessee lost five of its past six games, including a 50-17 defeat to Missouri on Saturday. Jones went 34-27 overall and 14-24 in the SEC over five seasons. He led the Vols to bowl victories each of the last three years. Baby talk can save your job
People want companies to be ‘just’
Workplace protocol is sometimes tough to navigate when pregnancy comes up WORKPLACES There were plenty of things Jaime Bernstein talked about while interviewing for her job as senior matchmaker at Three Day Rule’s D.C. office. Her résumé. Her vision for the position. But one thing she didn’t discuss? The fact that she was pregnant. “I had made a conscious decision that I was not going to disclose that,” says Bernstein, 34. “Them knowing that I was pregnant before deciding to hire me wouldn’t give me any kind of benefit.” It wasn’t until she had an offer letter in hand from the dating service that she revealed her good news. “I was nervous, but I got a lot of support,” she says. “I was glad I didn’t disclose it, even though I don’t think it would have changed the outcome.” While pregnancy leads to lots of exciting changes, it also brings up important questions for women in the workplace. When and how should you tell your boss? How much maternity leave should you take? Will you be back to business as usual after the baby? Knowing where you stand is important before beginning any office conversations. Do
you want to move from full- to part-time work? Do you want the ability to work from home or take flex time? And what do you want to adjust about your job after having the baby? “Really think about what you want,” says Melissa S. Fireman, co-founder and CEO of career management firm Washington Career Services. “The clearer you are, the easier it is to present whichever scenarios you want to happen.” Many women wait until after the first trimester to tell their boss, but there is no exact “right” time. “If women want to wait until 20 weeks because it makes them feel more comfortable, they’re not letting their employer down in doing so,” says Allyson Downey, co-founder of baby gear review website weeSpring and the author of “Here’s the Plan: Your Practical, Tactical Guide to Advancing Your Career During Pregnancy and Parenthood.” Still, be careful about sharing your secret with any co-workers before letting your boss know. Pregnancy discrimination is still an issue women contend with (see sidebar), and if your boss gets wind that you’re pregnant, it can lead to some gray areas.

“The clearer you are, the easier it is to present whichever scenarios you want to happen.” MELISSA S. FIREMAN, CEO of Washington Career Services, saying you should figure out exactly what you want before you tell your boss you’re pregnant
“If you weren’t on record as having told them that you’re pregnant, someone inclined to discriminate against pregnant women could fire you but then later claim they had no idea [that you were pregnant],” says Tom Spiggle, founder of Arlingtonbased Spiggle Law Firm, which specializes in employee rights
cases, and the author of “You’re Pregnant? You’re Fired!: Protecting Mothers, Fathers and Other Caregivers in the Workplace.” You don’t have to make an overly formal announcement. Fireman recommends sharing the news after a positive review or conclusion of a big project. “Employers want to keep talent,” she says. “So if you’ve just completed a $5 million project, they’re going to be nervous about losing you, but want to try to keep you.” Downey suggests giving employers time to digest the news. Then follow up a few weeks later to discuss specifics. “Go into the second meeting with really concrete details of how much time you plan to take off, who can cover for you in your absence, and the types of things you’re going to do CONTINUED ON PAGE 18
According to a survey of 10,000 Americans released Thursday by the nonprofit Just Capital, 85 percent of respondents said they would pay more for a product with “just” business practices, while 79 percent said they would take a pay cut to work at such a firm. The report offers guidance to companies about what business practices are important to American consumers. The survey found that respondents ranked worker issues their highest priority (23 percent) in evaluating companies, while another 10 percent rated job creation most important, making the workforce the main factor Americans use to appraise a company. Worker issues were followed by companies’ treatment of customers (19 percent), the quality of their products (17 percent), their impact on the environment (13 percent) and their interactions with their local communities (11 percent). you’re covered under the Family and Medical Leave Act, which entitles eligible employees to unpaid leave for certain family and medical reasons, including maternity leave. Get familiar with your employee handbook, and go into human resources meetings with a list of questions. Deciding how much leave to

If you want to ask for flex time or the ability to work from home after the baby is born, the right approach can increase your chances of success. “The No. 1 way to get flexibility at your job is to be really good at your job,” says Downey. “Walk into the room with solutions, not problems.” If staying home with the baby proves to be the right decision for you, keeping at least a toe in your chosen career can make a future return to work much easier. “Even if you’re working 10 to 15 hours a week doing accounting or recruiting, people will know your skills are active and up to date,” says Fireman. “And if you’re a real talent, people will want you back.” BETH LUBERECKI (FOR EXPRESS)
Are you dealing with discrimination? An employer is not allowed to treat you differently because you’re pregnant. What Tom Spiggle calls “improper stereotypes” can be a form of pregnancy discrimination. “You’re pregnant, therefore you will be forgetful or not come to work on time,” he says as an example of one of these stereotypes. “Or, ‘We’re not going to give you that promotion that requires a lot of travel, because we know someone having a new baby doesn’t want to do that.’” If you think you’re being discriminated against, keep a record of what’s happening. The size and location of your company impact which federal and state laws apply to pregnancy discrimination and accommodations. “It’s sad that it is so complicated, but it is,” Spiggle says. He says websites such as abetterbalance.org and worklifelaw.org can help pregnant employees figure out their legal rights. The next step is to find an employment law attorney with experience in pregnancy discrimination. For that, you can use mwela.org, the local affiliate of the National Employment Lawyers Association. Her business started with a cheesy idea Name: Alice Bergen Phillips Position: Mobile cheesemonger Salary: $40,000-$50,000
JASON HORNICK (FOR EXPRESS)
What she does When Alice Bergen Phillips tells people what she does for a living, the most common reaction is, “That’s a job?” Her response? “I made it a job.” The tenacious Chicago native is the founder of Cheesemonster D.C., a private, mobile cheesemonger based in Alexandria that aims to bring cheese to the
people. That mission takes shape in various forms: Phillips leads classes on the history, geography and basics of pairing cheese, and she hosts a near-monthly cheese party (be still, our hearts!) at local restaurants, where guests sample and discuss a range of types. But the bread and butter — er, bread and cheese? — of her company are the beyond-elaborate cheese boards and bigger, more sprawled-out grazing tables she makes for private events. Phillips starts with the same ingredients that amateurs would
use to build a cheese board — mixed nuts, crudités, dried fruit — except she arranges them in a mesmerizing manner. Using different shapes, textures, heights and colors, she builds a swirling, undulating, edible work of fine art that you’re encouraged to touch. “I want my boards to have a cornucopia effect — if you take a few grapes it’s not going to ruin the whole thing,” says Phillips. “Nothing makes me sadder than when I come back after an event for my equipment and no one has CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

touched [a cheese board] because they don’t want to ruin it.” During busy seasons, Phillips estimates that she builds up to three boards a week. She’s been approached to consult with restaurants that want to develop a cheese program or need an on-site monger, but — much like the cheese — she prefers to stand alone. “I don’t want to say the word bossy, but I’m always more comfortable being in charge of something,” Phillips says. Plus, her current role allows her to engage with customers about the products, which she enjoys as a self-proclaimed cheese nerd. Oftentimes when she provides a board for a party, Phillips
will stick around to answer any questions and lead guests on a dairy-filled journey.
How she got the job Phillips graduated with a degree in political science and got an internship at a national security think tank in D.C. Though she found the work important and fulfilling, she longed to be at her side job as a barista. At the coffee shop, she leaned how to taste in a more professional manner, educating herself about the origins of different beans and the best way to enhance their natural flavors. “I was more comfortable talking to customers and introducing people to new items and being a little more gregarious than I was sitting in my cubicle,” Phillips says. The shop’s cheesemonger left shortly after Phillips came on board and she stepped up to the challenge. The chef taught her basic plating principles and instilled in her the importance of making food look good. When she and her husband moved back to D.C., she got a managerial job at Baked & Wired, which taught her how to run a business. Then, Via Umbria — an Italian restaurant in Georgetown — put out a call for a cheesemonger and Phillips got the job. It required her to cater private events, where her gorgeous cheese boards blew people away. Word of mouth spread like hot brie on a cracker

How you can get the job
Phillips says she wants her elaborate cheese boards to have a “cornucopia effect,” meaning they’re works of art that you’re encouraged to feast on.
and requests for private jobs started rolling in. In March of last year, she left Via Umbria to form Cheesemonster D.C.
Who would want this job Obviously, the lactose intolerant need not apply. Those with
a strong interest in food and a curiously for where it came from will thrive in this line of work. Phillips spends a great deal of time getting to know her cheese suppliers and researching her products so she’s prepared to answer any questions.
“One of the reason my business works is because it’s not just a beautiful display. I can provide them with answers if they have questions [about the products],” she says. Because this type of job is front-facing, it’s important to have good customer service.
“Cheese, wine and coffee are things that can take a snobbish route, and it’s my job to make it accessible,” Phillips says. “If you show up and you’re a jerk about it, no one is going to want to work with you.” The job also requires some artistic sensibility,
Starting a business like this takes retail experience — preferably in specialty food — where you can gain customer service and managerial experience. The District is home to a number of specialty food shops, including Dean & DeLuca, Glen’s Garden Market and Salt & Sundry. If you’re interested in cheese specifically, start sampling different varieties on your own and developing a palate. Phillips also suggests joining the Mid Atlantic Cheese Coalition, which is made up of professionals and chefs who meet quarterly and geek out about cheese. “The cheese industry is awesome,” Phillips says. Comic calls out Apu’s stereotype TELEVISION “Thank you, come again!” That phrase, made famous by “The Simpsons,” has haunted Hari Kondabolu for nearly 30 years. The Brooklyn-based standup comedian and child of Indian immigrants can’t even recall the first time he heard the jeer hurled his way. “When it happens so regularly,” he says, “it’s like asking me, ‘Can you remember specific times you took the subway?’” In the hit Fox show’s sea of yellow-skinned Springfielders, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the Indian-born convenience store clerk, stood out for his brown skin. (And probably for the Ganesha statue gracing his KwikE-Mart counter.) But mostly, Apu imprinted himself on the viewer’s psyche with his accent, a clucking singsong that made “Thank you, come again!” a meme before memes existed.
At first, it didn’t seem so nefarious to Kondabolu. The TV shows of the era didn’t “look anything like where I grew up,” he says. “So being able to see an Indian face, even if it was a cartoon, that’s all I wanted: to exist.” But now, Kondabolu is examining whether the chattering cartoon immigrant did more harm than good as a representation of Indian-Americans. He’s taking on the shopkeeper in “The Problem With Apu,” debuting Nov. 19 on TruTV. The hour-long documentary includes interviews with actors and comics of South Asian heritage, who discuss the character and how their lives have been affected by the stereotypes of South Asians in pop culture. Kondabolu, who also is an executive producer of the film, talks with Kal Penn of “Harold and Kumar” fame; “Master of None” star Aziz Ansari; and actress Whoopi Goldberg, who maintains a collection of racist depictions of African-Americans from a not-so-distant past and begins to see Apu’s place in it.

‘Future Man’
In “The Problem With Apu,” Hari Kondabolu enlists Whoopi Goldberg to discuss the impact of stereotypical images in pop culture.
A product of its time “The Problem With Apu” director Michael Melamedoff says Apu came “to life in the guise of a stereotype.” “The Simpsons” arrived in 1989, just after Long Duk Dong in “Sixteen Candles,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “Big Trouble in Little China.” “Was this kind of race-baiting humor more acceptable in American culture then?” he asks. “One-hundred percent.” L.R.
Kondabolu is keenly aware that taking on Apu is akin to dragging “The Simpsons” behemoth itself. And that the millions of Americans who have glowing memories of Bart and Co. will bristle at the
idea that they may have laughed at something racist. But he wants viewers to see how insidious such characterizations can be and how they thrive. “You start to feel embarrassed to be an Indian,” he says. “Because there’s only one representation.” Kondabolu says his goal isn’t to shame the show or demand Apu’s erasure. “It’s already been 30 years, and the impact has already been made,” he says. “For me it’s about getting more diverse roles. It’s about writing rooms being more diverse, people actually sharing their own stories as opposed to other people sharing it for them.” LAVANYA RAMANATHAN
This new comedy, directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, stars “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson as a janitor/gamer who is tasked with traveling back in time to prevent the extinction of humanity.

Maria Bamford, right, plays a version of herself in “Lady Dynamite.”

Judd Apatow once wrote that Maria Bamford is “the funniest being in the world.” Your reaction may well be … who!? Bamford is a stand-up comedian who stars in Netflix’s “Lady Dynamite,” which rolled out Season 2 last week. She has a high-on-helium voice and eyes that look sincere yet startled. As in almost every sitcom starring a comedian, Bamford plays a version of herself: a woman who has struggled with mental illness, including, in her words, “a year and a half of hospitalizations.” Her issues include obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder and suicidal thoughts. In Season 2, Bamford is trying to restart her show biz career and build her first healthy relationship with a man. Absurdity does ensure. This includes flashbacks styled as a show-within-a-show called “Duluth” (Bamford’s real-life Minnesota hometown), set in 1987 and done in the earnest
style of a back-to-school special — but with a twisted soul. Her dad fires a shotgun into a cake her mom made for an auction to benefit abused women. “You want some marriage advice?” he asks Maria. “Never show your true feelings.” Clearly, Bamford needs advice. Who better to ask than Apatow, who makes a cameo. “I have a saying,” he tells her. “Embrace it to erase it.” He hated needlepoint, he explains. Then someone gave him a needlepoint pillow, and he didn’t “mind it anymore.” And if you embrace the show in all its weirdness, you’ll get Bamford’s very original perspective on what it’s like to live with mental illness: downs, ups, despair, longing for normalcy, moments of absurdity. And you’ll get to see what makes Judd Apatow laugh. Sample bit: Bamford gets out of a shower and wrings water from her hair into a glass because, as she explains, “we’re in a drought.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse
Scott R. Brunton, a former male model, claimed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Friday that “Star Trek” actor George Takei groped him in 1981, when Brunton was 23 and Takei was in his 40s. Takei denied the accusation in a Facebook post. Former “ER” actor Anthony Edwards wrote in a Medium post that he was molested by producer Gary Goddard, his former manager and mentor. Goddard’s rep denied the claim. Writer Jessica Teich alleged in a Vulture report on Friday that Richard Dreyfuss had harassed her over two to three years while she was working on a show he was producing, and once exposed himself to her. Ellen Page wrote Friday on Facebook that Brett Ratner, who directed her in “X-Men: The Last Stand,” sexually harassed her and publicly outed her as gay when she was 18. Ratner already faced several claims of misconduct. FX and Netflix have cut ties with Louis C.K., who admitted claims of sexual misconduct made by five women were true. The distributor of his newest movie, “I Love You, Daddy,” also said it won’t be releasing the film.

AN EVENING WITH PAUL WATSON: SOLVING AN ARCTIC MYSTERY Tuesday, November 14, 6:30 PM
Baird Auditorium, Ground Floor, National Museum of Natural History 10th St. and Constitution Ave. N.W. Washington, DC 20013
“Tiffany Haddish doing the nay nay in an Alexander McQueen gown hosting ‘SNL’ is what I call progress.” @HARRYSHUMJR, tweeting about actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish hosting “Saturday Night Live.” It was the first time a black female comedian who was not a cast member hosted the show. Haddish shared a “Tiff tip” for men on how to not commit sexual assault: Don’t take out your “thingthing” if a woman has her clothes on. She also joked about re-wearing the Alexander McQueen gown that she bought for the premiere of “Girls Trip.” “I feel like I should be able to wear what I want, when I want, however many times I want, as long as I Febreze it,” Haddish said.
“The #MeAt14 thread ... is powerful indeed. Fourteen-year-olds are children, not dating material for 30-somethingyear-old men.” @JOYANNREID, tweeting about the hashtag #MeAt14, started by writer Lizz Winstead, in which women shared photos of what they looked like and what they cared about at age 14, to give context to allegations that Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore sexually assaulted a 14-year-old.

The National Museum of Natural History invites you to attend an evening with Pulitzer prize-winning photographer and best-selling author Paul Watson. Watson’s new book, Ice Ghosts weaves together the spellbinding true story of the greatest cold case in Arctic history. Watson will present the detective story of Western science, indigenous beliefs, and the irrepressible spirit of exploration which lead to the epic discovery of the 1845 Franklin Expedition— whose two ships, the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror, and their crew of 129 were lost to the Arctic ice while in search of a Northwest Passage. A conversation with Kirk Johnson, Sant Director of the National Museum of Natural History, will follow. After the program, see Inuit objects and engage with volunteers to learn more about the Arctic, Inuit culture, and the museum’s exhibit Narwhal: Revealing an Arctic Legend. Ice Ghosts will also be available after the program for purchase and signing.
Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History This program is made possible by the generous support of David M. Rubenstein and is part of the An Evening With... signature series featuring thought leaders in conversation with paleontologist and Sant Director of the National Museum of Natural History, Kirk Johnson.
“[This is a] vinyl LP soundtrack to a TV show about cassette tapes [that] you can only watch using the internet.” @MZNEWMAN, tweeting about how 20 years ago, he never would have predicted the weird media mashup that is the a vinyl version of the soundtrack to the Netflix show “13 Reasons Why.”
“You may be saving lives, but don’t park your van in a stupid place and block my drive.”
“Bill Walton is a national treasure. He just apologized on behalf of the entire human race.”
A NOTE that was left on an ambulance in West Midlands, England. The emergency services tweeted a picture of the spiteful note, and added that the patient they had was in critical condition. “Sometimes we just don’t know what to say,” the tweet said. It was hashtagged: #PatientsComeFirst.
@ZEISENDRATH, tweeting after Bill
Walton gave an eccentric apology “on behalf of the human race” for the “travesty” of three UCLA players shoplifting in China. Walton, a Hall of Famer who played for UCLA in the ’70s, made those comments during ESPN’s broadcast of the UCLA-Georgia Tech game Friday night in Shanghai.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You receive news today that has you wondering about possibilities to come. Are things looking up? SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) How you interpret what you hear today makes all the difference. Before trying to sell another on your ideas, try them out yourself. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Though you have strong opinions today, you’ll want to offer them gently so that you don’t take anyone by surprise. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your approach and your attitude are actually more important today than the things you are trying to accomplish. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You can push your plans forward at a faster pace today without endangering yourself or others.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You are quite perceptive today when it comes to other people’s methods and motives. You don’t have to adopt them, however. Stick to the plan. TODAY: Light showers remain possible through the morning. But we should be dry by afternoon with increasing sun as high pressure noses its way back into the region. Look for highs right around 50 degrees. Skies continue to clear out through the evening and overnight and trend mostly clear by dawn.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You are facing certain realities that will limit your behavior today and in the future. Some of these are economic. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) A business arrangement must remain just that, and not become something more complicated because you’ve involved one or more personal issues.

Another game of Let’s Inspect Taylor’s Words
‘Two can play that game!’ — The Weeknd The Weeknd was spotted out last week with Yovanna Ventura, Justin Bieber’s former girlfriend. Us Weekly reported the two were holding hands at French Montana’s birthday party on Nov. 9. “He was parading her around,” one source said. “He was trying to make it obvious that he was with someone.” The Weeknd recently split from Selena Gomez, who is now reportedly back together with former flame Bieber.
Taylor Swift included supplemental written works in Target’s special-edition bundle of her new album, “Reputation.” One of them is a poem that seems to address her months-long break from the spotlight last year. Titled “Why She Disappeared,” it speaks of “fair-weather friends” who “blew away” when she “crashed”; when she “rose,” she was “wary of phone calls and promises/ Charmers, dandies and get-love-quick-schemes.” Swift also penned a prologue to the album, which begins and ends with the same message: “We think we know someone, but the truth is that we only know the version of them they have chosen to show us.” (EXPRESS)

Magazine turns apology into full-on whodunit
Hilary Duff’s neighbors were “aghast” at the wild 30th birthday party Duff threw at her Beverly Hills home, Page Six reported. Sources said a car belonging to her boyfriend, Ely Sandvik, was parked backward the next morning with a broken window after bumping the caterer’s truck. A source said the bash “disrupted the neighborhood,” but Duff’s rep said neighbors were invited. (EXPRESS)
British magazine Grazia U.K. has apologized to Lupita Nyong’o after the actress accused it of altering her hair on its cover “to fit a more Eurocentric notion” of beauty. The Oscar winner tweeted before-and-after shots, saying Grazia “edited out and smoothed” her hair. Grazia issued an apology Friday, saying it had not altered the images or asked the photographer to do so, but “is committed to representing diversity.” (AP)

Mariah Carey is reportedly paying her boyfriend and backup dancer, Bryan Tanaka, to manage her full-time after Carey recently parted ways with her manager. A source told Page Six that Tanaka isn’t fit “to run her career,” and added, “This is a full-on Britneyand-Kevin Federline situation. Bryan is a backup dancer, and knows nothing about managing an iconic artist.” (EXPRESS)
