Richard Lussi of Plains, Pa., always joked that he didn’t want to venture into the afterlife hungry. His family said he got his wish when he was buried with two cheesesteaks from his favorite spot — Pat’s King of Steaks in Philadelphia. Lussi, 76, died of heart complications Oct. 10. He had one additional request regarding the sandwiches: “No onions,” his grandson, Dominic, said he would say, “because they’ll come back to haunt me.” (AP)

Drunken-driving fines in Norway are based on the defendant’s income, and the Oslo City Court said the penalty could have been as high as 40 million kroner, the equivalent of $4.9 million. (AP)

Thanksgiving travel forecast

MACHIPONGO, VA.

Va. man found safe after raft blew off course

GETTY IMAGES

GETTY IMAGES

THE WASHINGTON POST

Whether by car, plane, train or bus, more Americans are expected to travel this Thanksgiving holiday than in previous years, jamming airports, roads and rails. AAA estimates that 50.9 million Americans will travel between Wednesday and Sunday, including 1.2 million travelers from the Washington region alone. Airlines for America, a trade group that represents some of the nation’s largest air carriers, predicts that between Nov. 17 and Nov. 28, more than 28.5 million people will fly on U.S. airlines. AAA says drivers will be paying the highest Thanksgiving gas prices since 2014, but those who fly will pay the lowest holiday airfares since 2013. Here are some tips for making it through this busy travel period. LORI ARATANI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

By air

By car

By rail

If you’re headed to Reagan National Airport, keep in mind that parking can fill up quickly during the holiday season. One way you can guarantee a space is to use the airport’s advance reservation system. Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport is offering 60 minutes of free parking in its hourly garage to make it easier to drop off or meet passengers. If you don’t want to drive, remember that all three airports are accessible via public transportation. Also, be sure to check with your airline before heading out to get the status of your flight. Most airlines have apps that make it easier to check flight status, as well as to check in. Airport officials recommend that you arrive at the airport at least two hours before domestic flights.

Record numbers of travelers also mean the possibility of record gridlock. AAA and global transportation analytics company INRIX recommend that motorists avoid hitting the roads between 4:45 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, when travel times could be double what they normally are. The team at Google Maps also recommends that you avoid travel in the late afternoon Wednesday, opting for Thanksgiving morning instead. To avoid the worst traffic on your way home, start your trip back early Saturday or Sunday morning, they advise. The best day and time to leave the Washington region is thought to be 6 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, and the best time to return home is 6 a.m. Sunday. Apps like Waze can also help you navigate the holiday rush.

Last year, more than 750,000 people traveled via Amtrak during the Thanksgiving period, and a similar count is expected this year. Amtrak officials urge travelers to download the railroad system’s app to help smooth their travel experience. Amtrak set a ridership record in fiscal 2017, with 31.7 million passenger trips — an increase of 1.5 percent over the previous year. In addition, Amtrak this month unveiled refurbished train interiors on its Northeast and Midwest routes. The blue cloth seats that have been a mainstay in the fleet since the 1990s are being replaced with gray faux-leather coverings. The new seats have lumbar support. The changes are being implemented and Amtrak hopes to have them completed by the spring or summer.

The Coast Guard says 49-yearold Wesley Schoonmaker launched his raft Saturday morning near Willoughby Spit in Norfolk and was immediately blown off course. Trial starts today in inauguration protest

THE DISTRICT

Man gets 30-year term for killing D.C. actress

Group of 6 defendants are first to be tried for allegedly inciting a riot

4

JAHI CHIKWENDIU (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT This will be no ordinary trial, set to begin today before Judge Lynn Leibovitz in D.C. Superior Court. It is unusual not only for the abundance of young activists who showed up to watch jury selection — earnestly scribbling notes in support of the accused — but because the six defendants are the first to be called to be accountable for a fiery, glass-shattering civil disturbance on President Trump’s Inauguration Day. Many more trials stemming from the rioting could lie ahead. The protesters called their Jan. 20 demonstration “Disrupt J20.” By the hundreds that morning, clad in dark clothing, their faces hidden, they marched in downtown D.C. They came in waves, smashing windows, painting graffiti, toppling newspaper boxes and setting mostly small fires — except for a blaze that consumed a limousine. Now prosecutors plan to have their say. The defendants face felony charges of inciting a riot and destruction of property, with each offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison. As for others arrested in the mayhem that day, the U.S. attorney’s office said it intends to put more than 150 additional defendants on trial in

groups of about a half-dozen, a process that could stretch into the middle of next year. To the government, the case is strictly about a breach of law and order, an alleged instance of organized, premeditated property destruction. But activists in the courtroom called it a stifling of free speech and a Draconian effort by authorities to enforce collective responsibility. “The repression of dissent against Trump has been rife in this case,” the defendants’ supporters said in a statement. The group’s spokesman noted that the four women and two men on trial are not alleged to have personally caused any damage. Instead, they are accused of taking part in a demonstration that they knew was organized for the purpose of wreaking havoc in the

city, including costly vandalism. “This case could have many implications for the future,” the statement said, “as the prosecution is attempting to establish a conspiracy based on clothing, chanting, and the same sort of organizing that goes into any march or protest.” In the days before the inauguration, authorities said, undercover D.C. police officers infiltrated meetings of Disrupt J20 members at which the rioting was planned. During and after the disturbance, more than 200 people involved in the protest were arrested, police said. The U.S. attorney’s office said 20 defendants pleaded guilty to reduced charges in deals with the government and another 20 cases were dismissed. PAUL DUGGAN AND KEITH L. Alexandria quietly moves Lee portrait The city of Alexandria has quietly removed a portrait of Confederate General Robert E. Lee that hung on the wall of the city council chambers for 54 years, relocating it to the Lyceum, a local history museum. Mayor Allison Silberberg called the museum “a more appropriate place” for the large painting of Lee, who was born in Alexandria. Like a similar portrait of George Washington, it was taken off the wall last summer as crews repaired the City Hall roof, then cleaned and repainted the room. But when it was time to rehang the art, the Lee portrait was replaced by a 1798 map of the city. The Washington painting was returned to the wall. “I don’t think any of us got a single email or call about it,” said city manager Mark Jinks. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The number of candidates who have filed to run as Republicans in Montgomery County in next year’s county council and county executive races. Meanwhile, more than three dozen Democrats have filed to run in a year in which the county executive is not seeking re-election, and heavy turnover is expected on the county council. Montgomery County is generally regarded as a liberal bastion, and Republicans acknowledge that they can’t break the Democrats’ stranglehold without a strong slate of candidates. It’s been 15 years since the last Republican was elected to the county council. (AP/TWP)

Dems opt for state-run primary in 10th District Democrats will hold a state-run primary next year in their race to unseat Republican Barbara Comstock from a Northern Virginia congressional district. The 10th Congressional District is widely considered vulnerable after this month’s elections. The 10th District Congressional Committee voted Saturday to hold a state-run primary, rather than a convention or “firehouse primary,” to nominate a candidate for the 2018 race. Nine Democrats, including state Senator Jennifer Wexton, have already announced plans to run for the seat. (AP) ANNAPOLIS

The shooter and the rest of the group then fled the area in a small blue car. City police said they believe Bosley and the shooter knew each other. Secret Service apprehends White House fence jumper

Judge won’t order counting of 55 late absentee ballots

A 21-year-old man was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and assaulting a police officer Thursday Hickman after he was stopped by Metro Transit Police officers who caught him squeezing through fare gates at the Minnesota Avenue station. Alontae Markell Hickman of Southeast was also charged with fare evasion. Police said Hickman reached for a handgun and threw it onto the train tracks at the station. The gun was discovered to have one round in the chamber, police said. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The U.S. Secret Service said an individual was taken into custody after attempting to jump a security barrier on the Pennsylvania Avenue side of the White House. President Donald Trump was inside the White House during the Sunday morning incident. The Secret Service tweeted at about 8 a.m. Sunday that someone tried to jump a row of metal bike racks that are being used to create a second row of fencing outside the executive mansion. Those racks were installed in response to a series of fencejumping incidents in recent years, including by a man who made it into the White House in 2014. (AP)

A federal judge has refused to order that 55 absentee ballots be counted in the election of a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Judge Claude Hilton said Friday that while the ballots that arrived the day after the Nov. 7 election were late, he saw no evidence of improprieties. The election in Stafford County has Republican Bob Thomas ahead of Democrat Joshua Cole by 82 votes. Cole’s campaign argued in a lawsuit that the ballots were late because of post office problems and should be counted. The Virginia House Democratic Caucus said the ruling was disappointing and the caucus is assessing its options. (AP/TWP)

An aerial photo shows the site where 210,000 gallons of oil leaked from TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone pipeline.

POLITICS

Leak won’t affect expansion Nebraska regulators to announce plans for proposed Keystone XL ENVIRONMENT The discovery of a 210,000-gallon oil leak from the Keystone pipeline would seem to be poor timing four days before regulators in Nebraska decide whether to allow a major expansion of the system, but officials say state law does not allow pipeline safety to be a factor in their decision. The Nebraska Public Service Commission is scheduled to rule today on whether a Keystone XL expansion pipeline proposed by TransCanada Corp. can cross the state. The commission’s decision is the last major regulatory hurdle for a project that has faced numerous local, state and federal reviews and lawsuits since it was announced in 2008. Keystone operator TransCanada Corp. shut down the existing

pipeline Thursday and was testing to determine the cause of the spill on agricultural land in Marshall County, S.D., near the North Dakota border. State and company officials said the spill was not a threat to waterways or drinking water, but critics were quick to use the leak as an example of what they see as the risks to the environment. The Nebraska vote today will be on a proposed route for Keystone XL, a massive expansion that also would be operated by TransCanada. The new pipeline would carry an estimated 830,000 barrels of oil a day from the oil sands areas of Canada through Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska, where it would connect with the existing Keystone pipeline. The decision will hinge on testimony and documents generated from public hearings over the summer and from more than 500,000 public comments, Nebraska Public Service

Spill cleanup underway TransCanada Corp. says it has sent additional crews and equipment to the site of a 210,000-gallon oil spill in South Dakota from its Keystone pipeline, but the company did not elaborate on the cause. The company says additional equipment and workers continue to be dispatched to the site. About 150 people are currently at the site. (AP)

Commission spokeswoman Deb Collins said. The five-member Nebraska Public Service Commission is forbidden by law from factoring pipeline safety or the risk of spills into its decision because pipeline safety is a federal responsibility. The simplest choice is a yesor-no vote on TransCanada’s “preferred route” through a dozen Nebraska counties. But the commission could include major caveats that would add years to

the project’s timetable. Commissioners could tweak TransCanada’s proposed route, or pick one of the company’s “alternative” routes. If the commission denies the request outright, state law gives TransCanada a 60-day window to revise and resubmit its proposal for another review. The Keystone XL proposal has faced intense opposition in Nebraska from a coalition of environmental groups, Native American tribes and some landowners who don’t want the pipeline running through their property. Opponents of Keystone XL are incensed that the leak won’t be considered. “There is a reason TransCanada and the big oil lobby did not want this information on the record,” said Jane Kleeb, director of the Bold Alliance, a coalition of groups that have opposed the Keystone XL for nearly a decade. The Democrat will succeed term-limited fellow Democrat Mitch Landrieu as the city celebrates its 300th anniversary next year. Complete returns showed Cantrell with 60 percent of the vote. Citing security, Turkish officials have banned all events by lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex rights groups in the country’s capital, in a move LGBT organizations call illegal and discriminatory. The ban took effect Saturday for an “indefinite” period and applies to all LGBT film screenings, theaters, panels and exhibitions. The Ankara governor’s office announced Sunday that the events may cause animosity between different groups and endanger “health and morality.” Two Ankara-based LGBT associations slammed the “arbitrary” ban, saying it violates domestic and international laws. Search continues for lost submarine ARGENTINA Argentina’s Navy could not confirm Sunday if seven brief satellite calls received a day prior were from a lost submarine with 44 crew members on board. “We do not have clear evidence that [the calls] have come from that unit,” said Adm. Gabriel Gonzalez, chief of the Mar del Plata Naval Base. “We are analyzing more closely to reliably determine that they were not calls coming from the submarine.”

Gonzalez said the Navy has intensified its aerial search off the country’s southern Atlantic coast after adverse weather conditions spurred waves up to 26 feet and made a maritime search difficult. Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said the low-frequency satellite signals received Saturday lasted a “few seconds,” but had not connected with a base, partly due to inclement weather. The communication attempts were originally thought to indicate that the crew was trying to re-establish contact. On Sunday, search units were largely relying on information gathered from a British polar exploration vessel, the HMS

Since the allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced, leading Washington Republicans — though not President Donald Trump — have abandoned Moore. Yet at home, polls have shown a tightening race. “He comes up here to the church and he’s quoting scripture and he relates to us,” said Larry Gibbs, who attended the proMoore rally where Allison spoke. He was removed from the bench twice for violating state judicial ethics — once for ignoring a federal court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the state’s judicial building and again over opposing gay marriage after the U.S. Supreme Court effectively legalized it. FRANCE France, a country synonymous with love, has been stumbling as it addresses the issue of sexual harassment and violence against women since allegations emerged against Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein. “France is a country of men who love women,” said Guillaume Bigot, who has written about the Weinstein fallout in France. “Seduction is a profound part of our national identity. ... The culture of the ‘French lover’ and the ‘French kiss’ is in danger because of political correctness.” Many women in France reject his viewpoint. Before the hashtag #MeToo went viral, a cruder French version — #balancetonporc (“squeal on your pig”) — prompted a deluge of anonymous accounts from women denouncing alleged abusers with unprecedented openness. Although the accused include a former French government minister, the former president of the Young Socialists party, a former TV news editor and the founder of a startup school, most have denied the allegations and no powerful figures in France have lost their jobs or their reputations. Such perceived apathy has triggered an outcry from French feminists. “Often in France, we hide behind the idea of gallantry for men,” said prominent feminist Caroline de Haas. “But this is constructed to make us hide the violence and think it is seduction.” THOMAS ADAMSON (AP)

Lebanon’s embattled premier says he will return to Lebanon, but confirms resignation

HARARE, ZIMBABWE Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe on Sunday defied calls to quit immediately, saying he will preside over a ruling party congress in December in an announcement that could trigger impeachment proceedings in the parliament this week as well as protests demanding his ouster. In a televised address, 93-yearold Mugabe acknowledged what he said were “a whole range of concerns” of Zimbabweans about the chaotic state of the government and the economy, but stopped short of what many

Mugabe was removed from his post. Mugabe made no reference to the party moves against him, instead saying he would play a

leading role in a party congress planned for Dec. 12-17. “The congress is due in a few weeks from now,” Mugabe said. “I will preside over its processes, which must not be prepossessed by any acts calculated to undermine it or compromise the outcomes in the eyes of the public.” The military took over the country on Tuesday, troubled by Mugabe’s firing of his longtime deputy and the positioning of unpopular first lady Grace Mugabe to succeed him. He is confined to his private home by the military, the ruling party has fired him from his leadership post and huge crowds poured into the streets of Harare, the capital, on Saturday to demand that he leave office. The Central Committee of the ruling ZANU-PF party voted to dismiss Mugabe as party leader at a meeting earlier Sunday and said impeachment proceedings would begin if he doesn’t resign as the country’s president by noon today. ALABAMA Alabama’s Christian conservatives see Roy Moore as their champion. He has battled federal judges and castigated liberals, big government, gun control, Muslims, homosexuality and anything else that doesn’t fit the evangelical mold. The Republican Senate candidate has long stood with them, and now, as he faces accusations of sexual impropriety including the molestation of a 14-year-old girl, they are standing with him. That steadfastness is shocking to many outside Alabama who wonder how any voter who claims to be Christian can stand with a man accused of such acts. The answer is both complicated and deeply rooted in the DNA of a state that prides itself on bucking norms. The state’s motto — “We dare defend our rights” — is an upfront acknowledgement of a fighting spirit that has put Alabamians at odds with the rest of the nation for generations. Introducing Moore during a “God Save America” rally at a south Alabama church last week, pastor Mike Allison said his support would not waver because Moore never has. “He has staunchly defended the Constitution of the United States, he has stood for the word of God … he is against the

BEIJING | A block of low-income rental apartments lies in ruins Sunday after a fire killed 19 people and injured eight in Xinjian Village in the district of Daxing in suburban Beijing, Chinese authorities said. Officials launched an investigation into the cause of Saturday night’s blaze, which lasted three hours, and also demolished other buildings and forced the evacuation of hundreds from nearby apartments.

KFAR SABA, ISRAEL Eliahu Pietruszka shuffled his 102-year-old body through the lobby of his retirement home toward a stranger he had never met and collapsed into him in a teary embrace. Days earlier, the Holocaust survivor who fled Poland and thought his entire family had perished learned that a younger brother had also survived, and his brother’s son, 66-year-old Alexandre, was flying in from Russia to see him in Israel, where he migrated in 1949. The meeting was made possible by Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial’s online database of Holocaust victims, a genealogy tool that has reunited hundreds of long-lost relatives. But given the dwindling number of survivors and their advanced ages, Thursday’s event seemed to be among the last of its kind. “It makes me so happy that at least one remnant remains from my brother, and that is his son,” Pietruszka said. Pietruszka fled Warsaw in 1939 as World War II erupted, heading to the Soviet Union and leaving behind his parents and brothers Volf and Zelig, who were nine years younger. His parents and Zelig were killed in a death camp, but Volf escaped. He was sent to a Siberian work camp, where Pietruszka assumed he had died. Volf, it turned out, had survived and settled in Russia, before his death in 2011. Alexandre, his only child, still lives there. ARON HELLER (AP)

BEFORE DEFENSIVE SHORTCOMINGS CAUGHT UP WITH THEM IN NEW ORLEANS, the Redskins displayed

the grit and guts that have come close to making them a good team. But in the final six minutes Sunday against the Saints, Drew Brees led two touchdown drives plus a two-point conversion to

force overtime and deal Washington a 34-31 defeat. Brees finished with 385 yards passing and two touchdowns — including one that set up a tying two-point conversion with 1:05 remaining — to drop the Redskins to 4-6. Kirk Cousins threw for 322 yards and three touchdowns, and Samaje Perine ran for 117 yards and a score, but Washington’s defense gave up 535 yards. LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

WORST THIRD DOWN: After the Saints trimmed the deficit to eight with 2:53 remaining, they burned their final two timeouts after Samaje Perine runs of 6 and 3 yards. Needing 1 more yard to secure a clock-draining first down, Perine was leveled by Manti Te’o for a 1-yard loss. That forced Washington to punt after the two-minute warning. BEST PICK THAT DIDN’T COUNT:

Kendall Fuller appeared to have his second game-clinching interception of the season on the Saints’ final drive, but he was flagged for illegal

JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

WORST GUT PUNCH: After blowing a 31-16 lead in the final six minutes of regulation, the Redskins won the toss before overtime and received the ball. Washington went three-and-out before New Orleans handed off to Mark Ingram, who gained 51 yards on two carries to set up Wil Lutz’s winning field goal.

and the two-point conversion. He needed four plays over 42 seconds to find Alvin Kamara for a juggling 18-yard TD. Kamara scored the twopoint conversion to tie the game.

WORST DECISION: Kirk Cousins completed three straight passes to Jamison Crowder to put the Redskins in field goal range with 31 seconds left. Facing a blitz on first-and-10 from the Saints’ 34-yard line and not wanting to take a sack, Cousins threw the ball out of bounds from within the pocket with no receiver in the area. That drew a 10-yard penalty for intentional grounding. A sack on the next play ended regulation. WORST SIGHT: Midway through the third quarter, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins rolled up on Chris Thompson’s right ankle as the running back attempted to block for Cousins. Thompson covered his face with a towel as he was carted off the field. Coach Jay Gruden said Thompson would need surgery for a fractured fibula. SCOTT ALLEN (TWP)

THE TAKEAWAY

Jay Gruden has to keep gambling During Sunday’s game in New Orleans — before a series of oddities turned a 15-point fourthquarter advantage into a gut-wrenching overtime collapse — Jay Gruden went for broke and won. Knowing that a win in the Superdome could resuscitate his team’s place in the wild-card chase, the Redskins’ coach disregarded conventional NFL decision-making in favor of risks that yielded rewards. He called a pass on fourth-and-6 that led to a go-ahead Samaje Perine touchdown in the second quarter. He ran a fake punt that led to a Ryan Grant TD catch to go up by two scores in the fourth. With an injury-stricken team that likely needs to finish at least 5-1 to stay relevant, Gruden’s gambles have just begun. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Wall sits out loss to rest sore knee

COLLLEGE FOOTBALL CHRIS GRAYTHEN (GETTY IMAGES)

RAPTORS 100, WIZARDS 91 Wizards point guard John Wall missed Sunday’s loss in Toronto because of a sore left knee that he recently had drained. It was the second game Wall has missed this season, both in Toronto. Washington entered the final quarter trailing by just three, but then its offense stalled: Through most of the final five minutes, the Wizards scored five points while Toronto put the game away from the arc. Raptors shooting guard DeMar DeRozan scored a game-high 33 points and drilled a 3-pointer over the outstretched hands of Otto Porter Jr. Then with 1:15 remaining, backup guard Fred Van Fleet drilled a 3 to open an eight-point lead. Bradley Beal scored 27 on 11 of 23 shots, while Tim Frazier, who replaced Wall in the lineup, finished with six points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Community activist Kwame Rose is profiled in HBO’s documentary “Baltimore Rising.”

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

HBO PHOTOS

8 p.m. today on PBS

Frustration and fatigue Like the activism it chronicles, ‘Baltimore Rising’ struggles to discover real progress TELEVISION Halfway through Sonja Sohn’s fascinating yet noticeably scattered documentary “Baltimore Rising” (8 p.m. today on HBO), a viewer realizes how unfair it is to expect any director to deliver a linear, organized film about the chaos that surrounds injustice. If community organizers and protesters have a hard time harnessing their anger and finding narrative satisfaction in despair, then how can anyone else? Sohn, known for her role as Detective Kima Greggs in “The Wire,” brings her cameras to the center of action after the riots that followed the April 2015 death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, a Baltimore man arrested by police and transported to jail in a ride so rough it left him in a coma with profound neck and spinal injuries.

As the state prosecutes (unsuccessfully, it turned out) the officers it charged with murder and other offenses in relation to Gray’s death, “Baltimore Rising” follows activists — from beginners like high school senior Makayla Gilliam-Price to seasoned organizers like 28-year-old Dayvon Love, of a group called Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle — who want their outrage to become a catalyst for change. There are plenty of personal stories here to absorb: Kwame Rose, who gained notoriety for lecturing Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera about how the media cover civil unrest, keeps getting arrested at protests for what appear to be legal, if exuberant, expressions of free speech. Sohn also follows Dawnyell Taylor, an African-American

Detective Dawnyell Taylor led the probe into Freddie Gray’s death.

police detective assigned to lead the investigation into Gray’s death. Taylor cheers with relief when her colleagues are acquitted or have their charges dropped. “Baltimore Rising” lets such contradictions speak for themselves, as a depressing theme of status quo emerges and the communal energy stirred up by Gray’s death begins to dissipate.

The city’s issues run deeper than one police-related death and reflect decades of poverty, drugs and racism. The “Rising” in the title seldom presents itself. Though she is young and idealistic, activist Gilliam-Price begins to sense fatigue. Participating in yet another trialrelated march, she says: “I feel like there’s no concrete strategy attached to [protesting]. Like, the visual is there and people are being engaged in a political process, but that process isn’t being used to do anything greater than just this — people standing on a street corner.” It can’t help but suggest an idea for a stronger film that might have come from Sohn’s effort: the physical and mental toll of living in a constant state of oppression.

Bill Murray, Amy Schumer Jimmy Kimmel and others gathered at a Kennedy Center ceremony last month to honor late-night legend David Letterman.

Malcolm Young, a guitarist whose chords provided the power source for AC/DC, died Saturday at age 64 of complications from dementia. Young founded AC/DC with his brother Angus in Australia in 1973. With their stripped-down sound of thundering guitars and drums, and screaming lyrics about hard living, lust and the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, AC/DC practically came to define rafter-shaking hard rock. BET

Robin Thede hits on the fun stuff and hard stuff on “The Rundown.”

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

Rockin’ Robin: TV gets a much-needed voice in ‘Rundown’ Nobody can say she’s a shrinking violet. Last week, Robin Thede, host of “The Rundown With Robin Thede,” tweeted: “I can say this honestly: @TheRundownBET is an INCREDIBLE television show. Don’t watch because I’m the only black woman hosting a late night show (or do). Watch because I’m doing it FOR US.” Thede, formerly the head writer for “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore,” is indeed the only black female late-night host right now, following in the footsteps of Mo’Nique and Wanda Sykes. But is her show, which

launched this fall (11 p.m. Thursdays on BET), really “INCREDIBLE”? On “The Rundown,” Thede skewers the news using TV clips and tweets. She reports pieces from the field on current issues. She also acts in skits. Sure, it’s uneven, like all the late-night shows. But at her best, Thede brings a sharp wit and the special perspective of an African-American woman. In a trailer for the fake biopic “On the Edge of Glory,” a competitor in a double Dutch competition is too traumatized to compete because her edges “got snatched” at a Beyonce concert. Her mentor, “White Coach,” helps her realize that edges don’t matter. She floats

$96M

over the ropes while reading a copy of Alex Haley’s “Roots.” Thede also tackles hairier issues. “Climate change doesn’t even crack the Top Ten Black Worries list,” Thede quips, showing a made-up list. Climate change ranks far below racism and just below “who made the potato salad.” In a segment titled “Game of Homes,” urban specialists explain how African-Americans were displaced in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina — and then real estate developers came in to gentrify the neighborhoods. Now in Miami, where some beachfront property is only 3 feet above sea level, developers are targeting the Little Haiti neighborhood, set on “land so high it’d fail a drug test.” They say the current residents will benefit by development. Or will they just be pushed out? As Thede puts it, “the white walkers are coming in search of land.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

“Gabby Douglas is young to be a public figure, and I hope she gets the chance to learn from this. But ... if a woman wears a fishnet bodystocking and downs a handle of vodka, the only thing she’s ‘asking for’ is a hangover.” @LAURENDUCA, after gymnast Gabby

Douglas responded to a tweet by her Olympic teammate Aly Raisman against victim-shaming. In a since-deleted tweet, Douglas wrote that it is a woman’s responsibility to “dress modestly and be classy.” After pushback, she said she didn’t word her reply correctly.

“HOLY HELL. This ‘Come Back Barack’ music video with Chance the Rapper on ‘SNL.’ Haven’t wanted to laugh and cry at the same time like that in a long time.” @SHANNON_DON, tweeting about the “Saturday Night Live”

music video “Come Back Barack,” featuring host Chance the Rapper and cast members Kenan Thompson and Chris Redd in a nod to Boyz II Men. The R&B breakup song expresses what it’s like to miss former President Obama. “The only change I want is you,” they sing. @sharminated tweeted, “I need ‘SNL’ to put this [song] on iTunes I’ll actually buy it.”

“If you want a fully immersive ‘postmodern design hellscape’ themed dining experience I highly recommend dinner at The Cheesecake Factory.” @MAXKRIEGERVG, the first tweet in a thread that went viral over the weekend, eviscerating the design and interior decoration of The Cheesecake Factory. @MaxKriegerVG called out the chain for its “ostentatiously gaudy and consistently cheap” decor, describing it as an “aesthetic chaos that feels like a mix between a Fry’s Electronics, an overgrown Panera, and a laser tag arena.”

In an interview with ESPN, LaVar cast doubt on how much Trump helped get UCLA player LiAngelo out of jail in China for a shoplifting incident. Trump bit back.
