The English town of Doncaster conducted a series of Twitter polls to name its new “gritters” — vehicles that plow snow and spread road salt. The winners were David Plowie and Gritsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Anti-Slip Machiney. They joined a fleet of named vehicles in the town that already included The Subzero Hero, Gritney Spears and Usain Salt, UPI reported Monday. The town had asked people to avoid Gritty McGritface. Meet today’s lucky turkeys THANKSGIVING What makes a good presidential turkey? Showmanship. A readiness to strut his stuff and gobble on command, with enough restraint to stay on a table for the big photo op. Today, a Minnesota turkey farmer and 4-H kids who raised the turkey will go to the White House for an official pardon from President Trump. It’s the 70th anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey tradition, although formal pardons didn’t happen until 1989, during the administration of President George H.W. Bush. Carl Wittenburg, of Alexandria, Minn., has the honor of taking the presidential turkeys to Washington. The chairman of the National Turkey Federation, he raises more than 100,000 turkeys annually for Northern Pride Cooperative in Wyndmere, N.D. The presidential flock was raised on a smaller farm near Alexandria. Five 4-H members have helped Wittenburg prepare the star bird

and an understudy who would step in if there’s a last-minute problem. The birds will be around 47 and 37 pounds, respectively, by pardoning time. Both hatched in June, and they were selected from a flock of about 20. In choosing the birds, the team looked for showmanship and character with an absence of stage fright, Wittenburg said. They wanted turkeys that would strut and gobble for the cameras and the president yet remain calm on the table.
Turkey time Minnesota is the top turkeyproducing state, with 450 farmers raising about 46 million turkeys this year. North Carolina is No. 2. The U.S. Department of Agriculture projects that U.S. farmers will raise nearly 245 million turkeys this year. The National Turkey Federation estimates that Americans will eat about 46 million for Thanksgiving and 22 million at Christmas. Most turkeys are destined to become deli meat, sausage and other products. (AP)
To prepare, the turkeys must get used to people. Teaching them to behave is the key, said Katie Kent, 18. The birds are hand-fed grub worms as bribes. “We’re getting them used to being on that table and getting them to gobble and strut o n c om m a nd ,” s a id K o d i Bundermann, 17. Strutting for a turkey is a male behavior that means fanning out his tail feathers and puffing out his body feathers, Wittenburg said. Gobbling also is a male behavior; females click or cluck. It’s hard to get turkeys to strut on command, he said, but they’ll gobble nine times out of 10. The birds were officially named Drumstick and Wishbone on Monday, and the White House opened a Twitter poll on which one Trump should pardon. They stayed at a hotel near the White House for the run-up to the big show. A flock-mate was pardoned by Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton on Friday. The presidential birds will finish out their lives in leisure at Virginia Tech, joining the 2016 winners, Tater and Tot, at Gobbler’s Rest in Blacksburg, Va. With luck, they might live another year or more. STEVE KARNOWSKI (AP)

Virginia’s Roem attends AMAs with Lovato Two weeks ago, the Virginia state delegate race made national headlines when Danica Roem became one of the country’s first openly transgender elected officials. Roem’s election also made waves in Hollywood when pop star Demi Lovato brought the delegate-elect from Prince William County as her date to the American Music Awards on Sunday night. Lovato, who said she was “just completely inspired” by Roem’s story, attended the AMAs to sing “Sorry Not Sorry,” a song directed at the people who bullied her in school. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Officials: Some voters received wrong ballot Va. Board of Elections puts off certifying two close House races
RHODES SCHOLARS EVELYN HOCKSTEIN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
VIRGINIA Virginia election officials say dozens of voters were wrongly assigned ballots in a Fredericksburg-area district that could determine party control in the House of Delegates. The State Board of Elections voted to temporarily put off certifying two House district elections Monday over concerns that voters in the 28th District were given ballots for the neighboring 88th district instead. Control of the state House may hinge on the outcome of the 28th district, where Republican Bob Thomas leads Democrat Joshua Cole by 82 votes. Department of Elections Commissioner Edgardo Cortes said that his staff had identified 83 voters from the 28th District who were wrongly listed and that there could be more. Cortes said Fredericksburg’s former registrar may have made a “pretty significant error” in recent years and wrongly assigned voters in split precincts, which serve multiple districts. That registrar, Juanita Pitchford, recently died, complicating efforts to find out what happened. “There’s a pretty significant question here about what took

Early agenda Campaign finance and public records bills are among the first to be filed for the upcoming Virginia legislative session in January. Among the measures Democrats discussed is one that would ban the personal use of campaign finance funds. place that does impact the accuracy of that final result,” Cortes said. Republican Party of Virginia Executive Director John Findlay
accused election officials of using trumped-up concerns to try to nullify a GOP victory. “This is a thinly veiled attempt to overturn the results of the election,” Findlay said. Democrats nearly wiped out Republicans’ overwhelming majority on Election Day in the House, with a handful of races that will decide control remaining too close to call. If the current vote totals hold, Republicans are set to control the House 51-49. Lawyers for the House Democratic Caucus sent a letter to the elections board Monday indicating they were planning legal action over the wrongly assigned voters. James Alcorn, chairman of the elections board, said he wanted the courts to “have that conversation” before certifying the election results. ALAN SUDERMAN (AP)

McAuliffe adds new rules for rallies at Lee statue Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s administration has enacted rules for political rallies at Richmond’s Robert E. Lee statue that limit crowd size and ban guns. McAuliffe announced the emergency regulations Monday. They were recommended by a state task force formed in response to a deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville earlier this year. The regulations create a new permitting process for groups planning to rally at the Lee statue and cut the maximum crowd size from 5,000 to 500. Guns would be banned at permitted events. THE DISTRICT During the opening minutes of the trial of six people charged with rioting during President Trump’s inauguration, a D.C. prosecutor described the scene as storefronts were smashed and a limo set afire. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Kerkhoff told jurors about a café owner whose shop windows were shattered by rocks, forcing her to close her business for days. And she described how a Starbucks employee and customers took cover as that shop’s windows were smashed, sending shards of glass across the floors. each playing a role in the violence and destruction moving together through this city,” Kerkhoff said. Prosecutors alleged a group called Disrupt J20 helped plan protests that pulled in participants from across the country who converged on the District. But defense attorneys argued authorities indiscriminately and illegally arrested hundreds of peaceful demonstrators, wrongfully lumping them together with individuals who participated in the unlawful violence. In all, prosecutors charged 212 people in connection with the riots. So far, 20 people have pleaded guilty while prosecutors dropped cases against another 20. Browning was accompanied by her boyfriend, who was dressed as President Trump. Trump publicly feuded with Wilson last month. Sheriff J.D. Keystone XL pipeline gets Nebraska approval
POLITICS
ENVIRONMENT Nebraska regulators Monday approved a Keystone XL oil pipeline route through the state, breathing new life into the longdelayed $8 billion project, although the chosen pathway is not the one preferred by the company that hopes to build it and could mean more time is needed to study the changes. The Nebraska Public Service Commission’s vote also is likely to face court challenges and may even require another federal analysis of the route, if the project’s opponents get their way. “This decision opens up a whole new bag of issues that we can raise,” said Ken Winston, an attorney representing environmental groups that oppose the project. Environmental activists, American Indian tribes and some landowners have opposed the project since it was proposed by TransCanada Corp. in 2008. It would carry oil from Canada through Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska to meet the existing Keystone pipeline, where it could extend as far as the U.S. Gulf Coast. Business groups support the project as a way to create jobs and reduce the risk of shipping the oil by trains that can derail. The Obama administration rejected the project in 2015

because of concerns about carbon pollution. President Trump reversed that decision in March. The route approved 3-2 by the Nebraska commission would be 5 miles longer than the one TransCanada preferred and would require an additional pumping station. Commissioners who voted for it said the alternative route would affect less rangeland for endangered species. TransC anada CEO Russ Girling said Monday that the company would study “how the decision would impact the cost and schedule of the project.” TransCanada said that it would announce in late November or early December whether
it planned to proceed with the pipeline and would take into account the Nebraska decision as well as whether it has lined up enough contracts to ship oil. The company submitted three proposed routes to the commission. The route preferred by the company would have taken a more direct diagonal north-tosouth path across the state, and a third route was rejected because it would have crossed the environmentally fragile Sandhills area. Keystone XL would expand the existing Keystone pipeline network, which runs through North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri and Illinois. GRANT SCHULTE (AP)

Pregnant women might increase their risk of a stillbirth if they sleep on their backs during the third trimester, a new study has found. The research, published Monday in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, compared the sleeping practices of more than 1,000 women. nation+world BUSINESS The Justice Department is suing AT&T to stop its $85 billion purchase of Time Warner, setting the stage for an epic legal battle with the telecom giant. The government claims that consumer cable bills will rise if the merger goes through, saying the deal would “substantially lessen competition, resulting in higher prices and less innovation for millions of Americans.” AT&T would be able to charge rival distributors such as cable companies “hundreds of millions of dollars more per year”
for Time Warner’s networks, the Department of Justice charged. Those payments are ultimately passed down to consumers through their cable bills. ‘Brands that support us’ What should companies do to thwart neo-Nazis from aligning with their products? Manson, leader of murderous cult, dies at 83 AP, THE WASHINGTON POST AND AND GETTY IMAGES
BUSINESS The neo-Nazis were hungry. They had spent the day in a Charlottesville, Va., courthouse testifying at the preliminary hearing for a white nationalist jailed for pepper-spraying counter-protesters during August’s deadly Unite the Right rally. Now, after the long drive home to Alexandria, they craved pizza. “We were going to order from the local place where we get pizza all the time, but we said no, Papa John’s is the official pizza of the alt-right now,” said Eli Mosley, the 26-year-old leader of the white separatist group Identity Evropa. “We’re just supporting the brands that support us.” That show of support — unsolicited and unwanted by Papa John’s — exhibits an emerging danger to major American brands negotiating the racial politics that have cleaved the country. Papa John’s, a major sponsor of the NFL, found itself in the unwelcome embrace of neo-Nazi groups following its chief executive’s Nov. 1 call with investors, in which he blamed disappointing pizza sales on football players’ protests against racism and police brutality. After the call, a neo-Nazi website hailed Papa John’s as “Sieg Heil Pizza,” with a photo of a pie whose pepperonis were arranged into a swastika. It didn’t matter that the company immediately condemned racism and all hate groups. “We do not want these individuals or groups to buy our pizza,” a statement from Papa John’s said. “They can signal all they want, but we know,” said Mosley, praising Papa John’s chief executive John Schnatter’s statements. statements disavowing white supremacy, typically followed by silence, in hopes the controversy will blow over without long-lasting damage to their image and sales. Brand strategists are advising companies accustomed to staying out of the political fray to proactively weigh in with bold statements about race — as Nike and Ben & Jerry’s have done — to thwart attempts by hate groups to adopt brands as their own. More brands are also building up their crisis management teams in preparation for the next racial flare-up, said Tiffany R. Warren, senior vice president and chief diversity officer at Omnicom Group, a global marketing and corporate communications holding company. “That’s the new reality,” she said. “It’s not just nice to have. It’s the way of doing business now.” Some companies were bystanders when they were swept up
CEOs backing Trump Some companies got unwanted admiration from neo-Nazis after their executives voiced support for President Trump or his policies. Images of angry young white men parading through the University of Virginia campus holding the flaming torches turned the product once evocative of backyard barbecues and luaus into a symbol of white supremacy. There is no telling the impact these endorsements have had on companies’ sales or on the movement’s recruitment efforts. But experts expect the co-opting of brands to continue. Matthew Heimbach, the chairman of the Traditionalist Worker Party, a white nationalist group, said he will keep having Papa John’s delivered to his local chapter meetings in Paoli, Ind. “Condemn us all you want, but we will continue to buy your pizza to support your struggle against the politically correct agenda,” Heimbach said. “We have to prove that we are a reliable economic, social and political bloc within American politics.” TRACY JAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
1934-2017 Charles Manson, the hippie cult leader who became the hypnotic-eyed face of evil across America after masterminding the gruesome murders of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six others in Los Angeles during the summer of 1969, died Sunday night after nearly a halfcentury in prison. He was 83. Manson died of natural causes at a California hospital while serving a life sentence. A petty criminal who had been in and out of jail since childhood, Manson surrounded himself in the 1960s with runaways and other lost souls and then sent his disciples to butcher some of L.A.’s rich and famous in what prosecutors said was a bid to trigger a race war. The Manson Family, as his followers were called, slaughtered five of its victims on Aug. 9, 1969, at Tate’s home: the actress, who was 8½ months pregnant; coffee heiress Abigail Folger; celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring; Polish movie director Voytek Frykowski; and Steven Parent, a friend of the estate’s caretaker. The next night, a wealthy grocer and his wife, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, were stabbed to death in their home across town. The slayings horrified the world and, together with the deadly violence that erupted later in 1969 during a Rolling Stones concert at California’s Altamont Speedway, seemed to mark the death of the era of peace and love. nation+world Trump says sanctions on rogue nation will be raised to ‘highest level’ NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump on Monday announced that his administration has redesignated North Korea as a state sponsor of terror, a move aimed at increasing pressure on the rogue nation nearly a decade after the George W. Bush administration removed it from the list. Trump said the move is “a very critical step” that “should’ve happened a long time ago.” He cited as acts of terrorism the assassination by North Korea of dictator Kim Jong Un’s halfbrother, as well as the treatment of University of Virginia student

Otto Warmbier, who died in June days after he was released in a coma by the North after spending 17 months in captivity. Trump vowed that the aspiring nuclear power soon will face further penalties that will amount to the “highest level of sanctions by the time it’s finished.” Iran, Sudan and Syria also are on the list of state sponsors of terror. According to the State Department, sanctions for nations on the list include “restrictions on U.S. foreign assistance; a ban on defense exports and sales … and miscellaneous financial and other restrictions.” Last month, a bipartisan group of House members wrote to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, urging him to add North Korea

to the list, citing the deaths of Warmbier and Kim Jong Nam. The North spent 10 years on that list before being removed in
2008 by the Bush administration for meeting nuclear inspection requirements. Pyongyang later violated the agreement. Michael Green, who served as senior Asia director at the National Security Council under Bush from 2001-2005, said the removal of the North from the terror-sponsor list was “very controversial” and turned out to be a “crappy deal.” He added that the Japanese government had lobbied the Bush administration not to remove the North in 2008 until Pyongyang brought resolution to Tokyo’s claims that the North had kidnapped at least 17 Japanese citizens in the 1970s. The cases were never resolved.

MEDIA Eight women have told The Washington Post TV host Charlie Rose made unwanted sexual advances toward them, including lewd phone calls, walking around naked, or groping their breasts, buttocks or genital areas. The women were employees or aspired to work for Rose at the “Charlie Rose” show from the late 1990s to as recently as 2011. They ranged in age from 21 to 37 at the time of the alleged encounters. Rose, 75, whose show airs on PBS, also co-hosts “CBS This Morning” and is a correspondent for “60 Minutes.” CBS News suspended Rose after the allegations were made and PBS is halting production and distribution of his show. In a statement, Rose apologized for his behavior but said he does not believe all of the allegations are accurate. “I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken,” he said. Five described Rose putting his hand on their legs or their upper thigh. Two said that while they were working for Rose at his residences or traveling with him on business, he walked naked in front of them. One said he groped her buttocks. In interviews with former employees, six said they saw what they called harassment, eight said they were uncomfortable with Rose’s treatment of female employees, and 10 said they did not see anything concerning. IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR TNA H O ENROLLEES
JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)
No turkeys served: Giants will spoil holiday at FedEx It all feels too predictable. The Redskins should beat a bad Giants team at a half-empty FedEx Field on Thanksgiving night. Yet you can bet that Washington will find a way to lose. Instead of Dallas, Washington’s traditional Thanksgiving foe, it’s New York’s turn to shovel dirt on Washington’s postseason chances. The Redskins (4-6) are literally limping into their final six games against five opponents with losing records, including two games against the Giants, who moved to 2-8 with a surprise win over the Chiefs on Sunday. With each loss, it seems another Redskins playmaker is lost for the season.
This week, Washington had just a few days to replace running back Chris Thompson, who had scored a team-high six TDs before he suffered a broken leg in an overtime loss at New Orleans on Sunday. Rookie Samaje Perine is now the senior rusher because Robert Kelley and Thompson suffered season-ending injuries in back-to-back weeks. While Perine ran for 117 yards against the Saints, Thompson’s absence makes it more likely the running game will turn into an afterthought. Meanwhile, the Redskins’ defensive players won’t improve just because safety D.J. Swearinger is swearing at them to work harder. The unit couldn’t protect a 15-point lead with six minutes left in regulation as the Saints
marched down the field in double time. New Orleans needed two plays in overtime to set up the winning field goal. Washington’s defense is in constant retreat. Still, conventional wisdom says Washington should stymie the pathetic Giants. The only person headed out of New York faster than quarterback Eli Manning in the offseason will be coach Ben McAdoo. But the Giants always seem motivated to face the Redskins. Remember last season when the Giants had nothing to play for but eliminated Washington from playoff contention? There’s nothing Giants owner John Mara loves more than carving up Dan Snyder’s club. The Redskins owner is an ally of Dallas owner Jerry Jones, but Mara is Snyder’s enemy. Mara chaired the NFL committee that in 2012 imposed salary cap sanctions on the Redskins and Cowboys for moves during the uncapped 2010 season. That drama heated up the Redskins-Giants feud to its most contentious level since Washington kicked a last-second field goal in its 72-41 win in 1966.
Broncos fire offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, replace him with QB coach Bill Musgrave
Grounding call in doubt? An NFL source suggested to The Washington Post on Monday that a key intentional grounding call made against Redskins QB Kirk Cousins on Sunday was erroneous. The source pointed out that the grounding rule requires that the passer be “facing an imminent loss of yardage because of pressure from the defense, a strong suggestion the NFL believes that was not the case in this instance. The call pushed the Redskins out of field-goal range on their final drive of regulation in an overtime loss at New Orleans. (TWP)
3 Ohio State great In 1995, Glenn caught 64 passes for 1,411 yards, led the nation with 17 TD catches — still a Buckeyes record — was an All-American and won the Fred Biletnikoff Award.
2 Immediate impact The Patriots drafted him at No. 7 overall in 1996, and he started 15 games as a rookie, leading the AFC champions in receptions (90) and yards (1,132) with six TD catches.
1 Second act
Maybe the Redskins would win Thursday if they were the away team. Their home and away records are identical (23), but they seem to play with more inspiration on the road. In their 21st season playing in Landover, Md., the Redskins are 81-83-1 in the regular season at FedEx Field. Washington’s season is on the edge yet again, and it seems inevitable that the Giants will push them off one more time.

Officials may not find a coach to replace Bruce Arena until after the 2018 World Cup is over.
U.S. soccer is in no rush to hire coach SOCCER The U.S. Soccer Federation is not planning to hire a coach for the men’s national team before the organization’s presidential election in February, multiple people familiar with the situation said. With no major competitions in the near future, it might wait until the pool of potential candidates grows after the 2018 World Cup ends in mid-July. The job has been vacant since Bruce Arena stepped down last month in the wake of the failed qualifying campaign. His assistants oversaw last week’s friendly at Portugal and likely would return for a training camp and friendly against Bosnia in January. The federation also could use coaches from the junior teams. One source said an appointment before the election is “highly unlikely. Others said the federation hasn’t even decided how it will identify and hire a coach. The federation has not interviewed anyone for the job or created a formal list of candidates. USSF President Sunil Gulati has led past searches. He has been in power since 2006, but a growing chorus of critics has called on him to resign. The federation could change its hiring approach by forming a search committee, appointing a general manager of sorts or inviting outside voices to contribute to the effort. MLB Bryce Harper’s contract expires after the 2018 season. So do Daniel Murphy’s and Gio Gonzalez’s. The list of Nationals staples who soon will be free agents is long and varied. But the one with perhaps the most potential to change the course of the team’s future is probably president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo, whose contract is set to expire Oct. 31. Both Rizzo and the team — which is known to avoid long-term commitments with anyone other than players — said they haven’t discussed an extension yet. A few weeks ago, principal owner Ted Lerner said he and
to say so, verbally and monetarily. The Lerners picked up Rizzo’s two-year option in the middle of the 2016 season. The Washington Post has reported that the deal pays $2.5 million for each of the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Rizzo should command a raise in his next deal. He turned the Nationals from a 100-loss team to one with four division titles. However, the team has yet to win a playoff series. Rizzo has never said anything publicly about feeling restricted by ownership, but the Lerners s have appeared to undermine him m more than once. For example, he e spent half the 2017 season ada-mant that manager Dusty Baker r would be given an extension, only y to have to explain why Baker was s let go following a division series s loss to the Cubs. HEALTH ADVICE
America the bountiful
Eating locally, seasonably and sustainably is now woven into our mainstream definition of healthy. When you eat that way, you are probably getting fresh food, reducing your carbon footprint and enjoying a variety of edibles based on their seasonality. You are also connecting in a meaningful way to your community and ecosystem. Few appreciate this more than Sean Sherman, co-author of the new cookbook “The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen.” His mission is to educate people about North American indigenous ingredients and to help people see their health benefits. Here are a handful of ingredients that are uniquely American — some of the foods that sustained people on these lands for generations and that are still widely available today. ELLIE KRIEGER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Meat-free proteins You don’t need meat for your protein fix. Beans, eggs, nuts, yogurt and even broccoli contain plenty of protein. Here’s a roundup of meat-free alternatives. CASEY SEIDENBERG (TWP)
Nuts and seeds (4-10 grams protein per 1-ounce serving): walnuts, cashews, pistachios, sunflower seeds, almond butter, hemp, chia, flax seeds Beans and legumes (7-10 grams protein per half-cup): black beans, white beans, lentils, chickpeas, hummus, green peas Grains (5-8 grams protein per cup): quinoa, brown rice, oats, millet, barley Soy (9-16 grams protein per ½ cup): tofu, edamame, tempeh
1
Cranberries
The cranberry’s tartness, brilliant hue and nutritional benefits are part of the tapestry of Native American cuisine. Cranberries grow on a low, vining perennial plant in bogs in the cooler areas of the Northern Hemisphere and are harvested in the fall when they are crimson red. Besides being turned into sauces and eaten plain, cranberries have been used by indigenous people to make what could be considered the original energy bar — a food called pemmican or wasna that is a mixture of dried meat or fish, berries, rendered fat and seasonings. The fruit is rich in health-protective antioxidants and a type of polyphenols that may help prevent urinary tract infections. It is also a source of vitamin C, manganese and fiber.
2
Maple syrup
The native people of northeastern North America were the first known to tap the maple tree to harvest its sap and produce maple syrup and maple sugar. Other trees, like birch, can also be tapped, but maple yields the most copious and concentrated sap. Maple syrup not only has a distinctive, sweet caramel flavor, but it also provides a small but significant amount of minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and zinc, and is an excellent source of riboflavin and manganese. Still, maple syrup is an added sweetener, and it is expensive, so use it sparingly and as a replacement for more highly refined sugars in cereals, sauces, dressings and baked goods. It also happens to be delicious in coffee.
3
Wild rice
Wild rice is not technically a true rice; it is the seed of an aquatic grass native to the Americas. It is nutty, chewy and, like all seeds, especially rich in protein and minerals. In his book, Sherman details the sacred nature of wild rice for indigenous people: “It is the one traditional food served at all the important ceremonies, weddings, funerals, and births for many tribes that have harvested it for centuries.” It is traditionally served in a multitude of ways, such as simmering it in soups or brewing it into healing teas. Try it instead of white rice in a chicken-and-rice soup, on its own or mixed with another grain as a base for a grain bowl, or in a pilaf. A delicious pilaf could be made combining ingredients mentioned here — wild rice and dried cranberries in a maple-sweetened vinaigrette.

Bison
European settlers of the American West called the bovines that roamed the Great Plains buffalo. But the animals, which have roamed North America for thousands of years, are bison, distant relatives of the buffalo. Nowadays, you can find the meat sold by either name in grocery stores and on restaurant menus. It has a rich, beefy taste but is very lean, with many cuts having less fat and fewer calories than skinless chicken breast.. Because it’s so lean, it’s important not to overcook the steaks, whereas bison stew meat is best cooked low and slow in a braise. In his book, Sherman quotes Native American writer Joseph Marshall: “The bison is symbolic of the relationship we have to the earth and to each other. This animal has kept us alive for generations, providing us with food, clothing, medicine and tools.”
Fruits and veggies: avocado (4 grams protein per cup), dark leafy greens (about 5 grams protein per cup), broccoli (4 grams protein per cup) Raw cacao nibs: 4 grams of protein plus antioxidants, vitamins and minerals per 1-ounce serving Dairy and eggs (6-9 grams of protein per serving): milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs

Ahem … I was one of those women
Q. While in college, I waited tables at one of those restaurants that involved my not wearing much clothing and needing to look a certain way. I now live near one of those restaurants and it occasionally is a topic of conversation among my friends and co-workers, often very belittling about the women. I don’t feel it’s my responsibility to have to tell them they are insulting me, but I also don’t want to hear it anymore. STOP THE JUDGMENT Ah, this is easy, because you don’t have to have been a server at a place to have an issue with its servers being belittled. (I know, that’s hard to believe in this strange “I have daughters” time, where people’s empathy seems to apply only to situations that they could directly visualize involving their own family.) So,
let yourself free, and object to these comments as a human, not as a former server. You’ve got a range of options for tone, from “Come on now, it’s a job like any other. We don’t know these women” to “Seems strange to target the staff but not the customers” to just, “Huh. I don’t like hearing that stuff — let’s give it a rest.”
aggressive to a co-worker I don’t like, and I’m being eaten up by guilt. I lied about the circumstances of a task she had to do for someone else, so she missed a deadline, got in (minor) trouble with our boss and turned against this other person. It was not playing fair, but I can’t see myself apologizing to this person because she would find a way to get back at me. REGRETS IN VA Guilt eating us up can be a useful tool for finding our path. Here, it’s keeping you in touch with your values and the person you want to be. Apologizing may not feel idyllic, and it may even come back to bite you. But I think you see the big picture here: You deliberately did something dishonest that had a negative effect on someone else and may continue to affect her via her reputation. Of course, offices can be soups of long-simmering passiveaggression and scheming, so it’s not like I’m sending the cops — but it’s very clear that your actions didn’t align with who you are, so a corrective course is necessary. Bonus points if you tell the people involved that it wasn’t your coworker’s fault. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. “FarmHer” is one of many agriculture-based programs on RFD-TV.
RFD-TV courts forgotten viewers The network targeted Middle America long before Trump’s victory TELEVISION When Verizon Fios decided in January 2016 to remove RFDTV from its lineup, the channel’s founder, Patrick Gottsch, wasn’t surprised hundreds of thousands of fans wrote in with impassioned letters. The family-owned network, which focuses on agriculture and the rural lifestyle, is still available in 52 million homes, but Gottsch believes other networks are ignoring the rural audience. That group has caused a great deal of soul-searching over the last year, after President Trump’s victory, aided by rural voters in states such as Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin, stunned the entertainment world. Gottsch, who says the network’s mission is to “reconnect city with country,” was not at all shocked when Trump won. He attended both the Democratic and the Republican national conventions, and urged both parties to focus on rural issues. Hillary Clinton’s campaign declined to advertise on RFD-TV; Trump’s camp spent $150,000 on ads on the channel just before he won.
“There’s been this new focus on ‘What did we miss?’ by the urban media,” Gottsch says. As other networks ordered pilots about red-state shows or brainstormed about rural TV ideas beyond “Duck Dynasty,” RFD-TV doubled down on programming that it already knows its viewers love. In the morning, shows such as “Ag Day” and “Market Day Report” focus on the weather and markets for agricultural purposes. Daytime and evening feature equine-focused shows (“Best of America by Horseback”); music (“Mollie B Polka Party”); and variety series (“The Marty Stuart Show,” “Larry’s Country Diner”). RFDTV also recently debuted “FarmHer,” which focuses on women in agriculture. As the past year has shown, RFD-TV has found new energy. One recent point of pride was last fall, when RFD-TV was included in AT&T’s DirecTV Now line-up. “The coolest emails I get now are from people that are watching ‘Hee Haw’ with their 10-yearold or 14-year-old sons and daughters,” Gottsch says. “They say, ‘It’s family viewing again.’ … A whole new group of folks are discovering this programming.” EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Camera operator dies on set of BBC/Netflix drama
Russell Simmons accused of sexual assault by model
Mary J. Blige and JAY-Z are the leading nominees with five apiece for January’s NAACP Image Awards, the group announced Monday. Blige’s nominations are for songs and videos off her album “Strength of a Woman,” while JAY-Z was nominated for his “4:44” album and songs on it, as well as a nod for entertainer of the year. Bruno Mars, Issa Rae, Kendrick Lamar and SZA are tied for the second-most nominations, with four apiece. (AP)
British camera operator Mark Milsome died on the set of the BBC/Netflix miniseries “The Forgiving Earth” in Ghana over the weekend, while filming a nighttime stunt sequence. An investigation is underway, according to his agent. Milsome, 54, worked on TV series including “Sherlock” and “Game of Thrones” and films “Saving Private Ryan” and “Quantum of Solace.” The BBC and Netflix released statements expressing their condolences. (AP)
Model Keri Claussen Khalighi accused Def Jam Records mogul Russell Simmons of sexual assault in 1991 when she was 17 years old. In a report Sunday in the Los Angeles Times, Khalighi said Simmons coerced her to perform a sex act and penetrated her without her consent. She said film producer and director Brett Ratner was also present. Simmons, now 60, denied the allegations, saying everything that occurred between himself and Khalighi was consensual. (AP)

30 NOVEMBER 6:30 PM
A team effort for Hill and McGraw The pair finds harmony on their duet album ‘The Rest of Our Life’ MUSIC After 21 years of marriage, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill seem invincible at a new peak in their careers. Not only do the Grammy-winning power couple have a new Showtime documentary, “Tim & Faith: Soul2Soul,” out now, but on Friday they also released their first duets album, “The Rest of Our Life,” featuring songs written by hitmakers including Ed Sheeran, Meghan Trainor and Lori McKenna. Though they have had countless duets on their own respective albums, this was the first time McGraw and Hill literally looked into each other’s eyes as they were recording. “We were side by side in the vocal booth together,” McGraw says. That physical closeness helped McGraw push himself vocally, especially on songs like the title track, which was written by Sheeran. Initially, McGraw wasn’t sure he could handle its range, but he nails an impressive falsetto with Hill backing him up. “He had to tighten a couple of things,” Hill says, smiling. Months after their first single

came out, “Speak to a Girl” — a song written by three men about how to respect women — a cascade of sexual harassment and abuse scandals have dominated the headlines. Hill says the song was important for them even before such allegations came out. “It’s difficult to teach our children to act a certain way and to be a certain way if we’re not doing that ourselves, so I think it came at an important time,” Hill says. “I think as a man, it’s time for us to look at ourselves in the mirror as well,” McGraw says. “Gosh, I know I haven’t been a gentleman my whole life. This is a good paradigm shift in our world for people to examine themselves and move forward.” KRISTIN M. HALL (AP)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You must look closely at the road beneath your feet today, as you can’t afford to be tripped up by something you don’t notice. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You can move faster in certain directions than usual, but you must move slowly in the direction you are being beckoned. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have in your head all the right reasons for doing a certain something — but you can’t seem to make them a reality. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your reasoning differs from that of many who are facing you across a current battleground. Why not listen? PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) The attention you receive today may be misinterpreted by someone who feels that you’re doing little to deserve your current accolades.
MONDAY’S SOLUTION
MONDAY’S SOLUTION
ARIES (March 21-April 19) It’s a good time to get down to business and to bring to the fore some issues that have been buried for too long. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) An opportunity is presented to you today that will require you to alter many of your current methods if you’re going to take advantage of it.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Things are going very much according to plan — except for one detail that will not fall into place. It’s time to call in an expert.
TODAY: Winds, even at only 10 mph or so, combine with mostly sunny skies to give temperatures a nice boost. Most of us see highs into the upper 50s to near 60. Showers seem like a decent bet to develop over Southern Maryland during the evening, with a chance of some showers making it into the immediate metro area overnight.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) An experimental approach allows you the freedom to maneuver as necessary when new circumstances arise. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may be working yourself into a frenzy over something that you simply cannot control. It may be time for a big life change.
